If you have an adult Pug, you may decide to switch foods due to an intolerance to certain ingredients some dogs do best with certain proteins like beef as opposed to chicken or vice-versa or maybe you realized that your Pug was not on the brand and you want to make a change. No matter the circumstances, if at all possible, it is best to change to a new brand of dog food in a gradual way because a quick switch can disrupt the digestive system. The goal should be a incremental change over the course of 3 weeks. Although certain health issues that Pugs may experience are congenital and beyond our control, others can be influenced by environmental and lifestyle factors, such as diet. Some of the most common health issues faced by Pugs include the following: Food allergies. Certain ingredients in their food can cause allergies in Pugs. Food allergies in Pugs may present as dry, itchy skin, ears, or paws. However, unlike allergies, food intolerances do not involve the immune system but can lead to vomiting or diarrhea. We highly recommend conducting an at-home dog food allergy test like the 5Strands kit. This particular kit can test for up to ingredients and determine which ones may cause food intolerance in your dog. Once you receive the results, you can use the list to avoid dog food formulas that contain potential allergens. Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS. Due to their compressed noses and flat faces, Pugs are prone to breathing difficulties and an inability to cool down easily. Eye problems. Pugs are at risk for various eye health issues, such as distichiasis, cataracts, dry eye, entropion, corneal ulcers, progressive retinal atrophy, and more. Ear infections. Pugs have narrow ear canals and deep skin folds around their face, making it easier for debris and bacteria to accumulate, leading to ear infections. Skin infections. Skin fold dermatitis is common in breeds with wrinkled skin, such as Pugs. Luxating patella. Pugs are susceptible to luxating patella, where the kneecap moves out of its normal position. Mast cell tumors MCTs , a type of skin cancer, are common in middle- to senior-aged Pugs, with cancer being the leading cause of death for the breed. Pugs are prone to obesity, which can exacerbate other health issues. Pugs are also susceptible to diabetes. Pugs are prone to obesity, leading to numerous health issues and decreased activity levels. A proper diet and sufficient exercise are crucial to keeping your Pug at a healthy weight. Overfeeding or providing nutrient-poor food can contribute to weight gain, which may result in a Pug becoming less active and more lethargic. More active Pugs require more calories and nutrients to sustain their energy levels, whereas less active Pugs require fewer calories to prevent weight gain. Pug Puppies. Require a diet that is higher in calories and protein to support their growth and development. They also need a balanced calcium and phosphorus diet for healthy bone growth. Feeding high-quality puppy food formulated explicitly for bulldog puppies can help ensure they receive the necessary nutrients during this crucial stage. Adult Pugs. Require a diet that is lower in calories and protein to maintain their weight and prevent obesity. They also need a balanced diet of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins to support their overall health and energy needs. Senior Pugs. Senior dogs may require a diet lower in calories and fat to maintain a healthy weight and higher fiber to support digestive health. Senior dog foods often contain joint supplements to help mobility and joint health. Avoid common allergens. Pug often develops food allergies or intolerances, so it may be helpful if your dog food is free from common allergens, such as corn, wheat, chicken, and beef. Pugs can have sensitive digestive systems. Look for a dog food that adds probiotics to its formula. Dog probiotics support a healthy digestive system and immune system. Pugs can be prone to digestive issues, so look for dog food that is minimally processed, such as fresh dog food or homemade dog food for Pugs. Lower-quality kibble may contain fillers, artificial preservatives, and other ingredients that can be harder to digest and may cause digestive upset in some dogs. Easy-to-eat kibble size and shape. Brachycephalic breeds like Pugs have shortened skulls that can cause breathing and eating difficulties. Opt for dog food with a small, flat, or round kibble shape that is easy for Pugs to pick up and chew. Balanced Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. Omega fatty acids can help support healthy skin and coat, reducing the risk of skin infections around the face and ears. They also help with skin inflammation and support healthy and shiny dog coats. Foods rich in antioxidants such as beta-carotene, lutein, and vitamins A, C, and E can help protect the eyes from oxidative damage. These nutrients are found in many fruits and vegetables. Low-glycemic carbohydrates. To help manage obesity and diabetes, choose dog food containing low glycemic carbohydrates, such as sweet potatoes or legumes, which release energy slowly and help maintain stable blood sugar levels. Low-calorie content. Joint support supplements. Look for dog foods containing joint support supplements such as glucosamine, chondroitin, and MSM, which can help maintain joint health and reduce the risk of a luxating patella. Chapter 2: The Reviews. How much and often to feed The best food for Pug puppies is easy to swallow, but still provides them with a complete diet. Because while this adorable dog is partially popular for that cute little face, their flattened features make finding the right food a little trickier. Chewing and Swallowing Pugs are brachycephalic , which means that they have been bred for their wider muzzles. This flat face makes it tricky to breathe, even more so while they are trying to eat. Pugs are also prone to retained deciduous teeth. Again, making chow down more of a chore. Nutrition Matters Pug puppies have different nutritional requirements to adults. They need more fat and more protein, along with additional amino acids and minerals. They should also have more omega-3 fatty acids such as DHA for brain and eye development. Feeding growing puppies the right balanced commercial diet can help keep them healthy. What is the Best Food for Pug Puppies? It also showed that temperature may play a role in their needed energy requirements. Basically, your dog has individual needs that must be balanced against each other when it comes to health and growth. But Pugs are one of the breeds that may be able to benefit from specialist dog foods. This is because of their conformational and health issues, and their low energy level. Bespoke meals may be able to address their obesity issues and come in sizes that are easier for their teeth to pick up. You should feed a puppy four times a day, until about 6 months of age. Then you are able to reduce to three or two times if you like. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own. Final thoughts The most important thing is to choose a food specifically formulated for Pug puppies with high-quality ingredients to meet their unique nutritional needs. Choosing the best food for your Pug puppy will give them the foundation for a happy and healthy life. From pet nutrition books to online articles, a wealth of information is available on this topic. These resources will give you a deeper understanding of the nutritional needs of your Pug puppy and help you make informed decisions about the best food options for their growth and development. Kibble, cans and specialty foods Proper Nutrition Since puppies need energy to grow big and strong, their food is higher in calories and packed with more nutrients. This includes more fat, protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids. So always choose a food that is labelled for puppies. Since a Pug is a small toy breed , they will grow very quickly and reach adulthood much faster than larger breeds. Toy dog breeds actually need more calories per pound than larger breeds due to their higher metabolic rates. The structure of their flat muzzle and facial folds , while appealing to look at, unfortunately causes a number of serious health problems. This causes soft tissue to block the airways, making breathing very difficult. Their jaws and teeth can also cause them problems. Remember, slimmer is better. How Often To Feed Your Pug Puppy I always recommend feeding puppies small meals at scheduled times several hours apart, and then decreasing the frequency as they get older. For puppies under six months go with something like 7am, 12noon, 3pm then 6pm. As they grow you can reduce this routine to three or even two times a day, but there is no harm continuing with multiple feedings as long as you dividing their daily rations evenly. Kibble vs Canned Food Dried puppy kibble is affordable, easy to store and transport, and readily available. Serving is as simple as opening the package and pouring it into the bowl. Canned or wet food will sometimes offer more meat protein and fewer carbohydrates than kibble does, but you will usually pay more as well. Wet food is also associated with an increase in periodontal diseases , which is not ideal for a dog already prone to these issues. Specialty Pug Puppy Foods The introduction of breed-specific formulas to the market has made it even more confusing. However, there are some Pug puppy formulations that address some of their health issues that might be worth considering. Some kibble is designed in a shape and texture that makes it easier for short-nosed puppies to pick up and chew easily.
Silver beige White Apricot - This and red were two of the last colors recorded for this breed; so they are the newest and quite interesting. An apricot can produce a red. Some apricot Poodles are so light that they appear to be cream, however you will notice a red tint to the hair. A true apricot poodle will have some points or black spots on their skin. Liver points are acceptable but not preferred in the U. All blue Poodles are born black and then "clear" lighten as the pup grows. This often happens within the first year but this change can take place as late as 2 years in some cases. For this reason, many blue Poodles are registered as black. The outer coat of a blue poodle is usually as dark as that of a black, but hairs at the root is a mix of colors. The amount of each color depends on the age of the dog. In middle-aged dogs, medium brown predominates. True blue Poodles will have black points and dark brown eyes. Brown - A brown Poodle is a deep, dark color and in no way can be confused with Cafe Au lait which is much lighter. Pure brown Poodles must have liver points and dark amber eyes. Brown is created by the bb gene, as opposed to the BB gene of black Poodles, and therefore will have no black pigment anywhere on the body, including the eyes and nose. Cafe Au lait - This is a shiny light tan color and some confused this with silver beige. It is not uncommon for the pup to be born brown and 'clear' to this color. A Cafe Au lait should have liver points and dark amber eyes. Black - A true black Poodle is a deep ink black. The dog's coat will have zero blue or silver tinting and not have any white or silver guard hairs. The face when shaved will be deep black, as well. A true black will not "clear" or "fade". Blacks will have black points and dark brown eyes. See More: Black Poodles. Silver Beige - This is a diluted brown, therefore a true silver beige Poodle is born brown. By 6 weeks, silver beige will appear on the face and paws with a full coat change by the age of 2 years. The dog will have liver points and dark amber eyes. Red - This only became an official color in and now many breeders in Canada have come together to form the Apricot Red Poodle Club. A true red will have black points. Read about the fascinating history of reds here: Red Poodles. Silver - A true silver Poodle is born black and "clears" by the age of 2. However, you will know a true silver by the age of 6 weeks, when the face and paws "clear" and the rest of the coat will follow in suit over the next year or two. Silvers will have black points and dark brown eyes. This color is a diluted gray, caused by the silver allele V gene. White - Most white Poodles are a pure, snow white. However, some breeders will dub a white tinted with apricot or beige as being white. A bit of black spotting is acceptable on a white, however there should never be any ticking in the white. The ticking gene is a totally separate gene that makes the coat appear dirty. Gray - While a Poodle can be born gray and stay gray, it is also not uncommon for a black Poodle to turn gray at the age of years old. Cream - These Poodles will have black points; you'll know that a Poodle is cream and not Silver Beige or Cafe au Lait if his nose is black. It is the Cch gene which causes an otherwise brown Poodle to be cream. Color Changes When a Poodle puppy is a solid, one must understand that many variables can affect what will become the adult coat. When a pup keeps the same color coat, this is known as "holding". However, many Poodles 'clear'. To clear means when the coat fades or lightens to another color. A lightening of the coat does not necessarily occur evenly all over the coat, rather Poodle color will often hold more on the dog's ears and the thicker guard hairs. Cafe Au lait Poodles are born dark brown and change to cafe around the age of 2 yrs Blue Poodles are born black and change over by the age of 2 years Sliver Poodles are born black and change over by the age of 2 years Apricots are often born a dark shade that lightens by the age of 2 years Many owners can become confused as their Poodle takes on a completely different color as they grow. For example, a blue Poodle puppy could be misinterpreted as black, although a reputable breeder should be able to know the difference. If that puppy has parents with parti in the bloodline, as the coat clears during the first 2 years, other colors may appear and the once black looking puppy who was actually a blue parti becomes a parti with a wide array of possible colors. Fixing a Dull or Yellowing Coat It is common for a Poodle's coat to dull, become brassy or yellow as the dog matures. Sunlight, air pollution and constant bombardment of minuscule debris are at work here, in addition to the natural aging process cycling out a duller color than a Poodle once had. At all times, each hair strand is in 1 of the 3 phases: Growth, rest or release. Therefore, it is a gradual process.Owners may not notice a difference in the richness, depth and shine of the coat until the process has been going on for a while and enough hairs have grown in faded or dulled to make a drastic difference. The key to fixing and maintaining a beautiful color on a Poodle is to use a color enhancing shampoo. There are some great ones manufactured specifically for canines. In addition, while in general one does not want to use a human product on a puppy or dog, as long as the PH balance is correct, it most certainly can be used with excellent results. When a black, blue, or brown dog has the mutation in this gene, they gradually fade in color as they grow. Not all black, blue, or brown poodles have the mutation, but some do. You will begin to see the change in color starting at a months of age and it is usually complete by the time the dog is mature. In some dogs there may be small changes throughout the life of the dog. Skin Color Skin color can change as well. The most common reason for a Poodle to have a change of color on the skin is exposure to sunlight and this most commonly happens on the belly. It is not uncommon for a pink belly to have darker spots appear. An owner should be concerned if those darker spots are raised above the skin and should have the dog's veterinarian take a look at any raised, dark areas. There is no such color. These puppies are creams with incorrect pigment and incorrect eye color. This is usually a result of browns that have a heavy background of cream. This is why it is so important to never breed browns to cream, red or apricot. Please, before buying a poodle, do your research. You should never be charged more money for an exotic color or a color that is a fault. On this page we will discuss these colors and try to show the difference between them. A glistening, startling white. There are at least two kinds of white, white 1 and white 2. The only visible difference between the two is that white 2 is more likely to have pink skin rather than a bluish black or silver skin. The eyes are jet black, so dark that one hardly can distinguish the iris from the pupil. Eyerims, nose, and toenails are black. The skin is bluish black or silver, a solid color. Common Faults: Such dogs may have a pink skin or a pink skin mottled with black or blue spots. This is a very minor fault and only should be counted by the judge if a white dog of equal quality with a black or silver skin is in the ring, or against a colored dog, equally good, with perfect coloring. It should not disturb the breeder. Such dogs may have white toenails. The same conclusion applies to this as to the skin color above. Such dogs may have a partially pink eyerim or one whole pink eyerim, or a pink spot on the nose or on the lips, with or without pink eyerims. These are major show faults which the breeder must not ignore, and such dogs should be bred only to a strain carrying very strong black pigment. Such dogs may have brown eyes rather than the so-called "dead black. Such dogs may have a small spot of completely black hair, a show fault if the spot is discovered or is in plain sight. The famous Champion Broadrun Cherry had such a spot back of his wide, well feathered ear. No effort was made to disguise it, and no judge ever observed it. We ourselves only discovered it when washing the dog. At any rate, the breeder can overlook such a fault. Question: Will white bred to white produce white? Answer: Not always. Again, we cannot be sure of the number of genes responsible for white or how they are paired, but if we go by the theory that white is inherited in a similar manner to brown, we can see why a black or other colored puppy appears in a litter from time to time from white parents. That is, the parents of such a litter are each a different kind of white and when bred together their recessive genes which would normally block other colors cannot act. Therefore black puppies can appear. There are probably other genes that we do not know about involved in these crosses. It is these and the introduction of other color crosses which produce the mottled skin. Question: Will breeding black to white improve the white type? Answer: Only if there is no other means available and the white is truly inferior in type. As a rule the whites have better coats, better bone, and equally good temperaments. Some of the continental whites are slightly round in the skull and heavy in muzzle. Still, I have seen plenty of blacks like this, too. Question: What is the best color other than white to breed to white for type? Answer: Black. Question: In breeding white to black to improve type, how can one return safely to white? Answer: Breed the hybrid offspring of the black and white union to a white-bred white of the same kind of white as the original white. Question: Will breeding a white and a black produce gray? Question: Does breeding white to white finally produce albinos? Answer: No, not unless one "downgrades" one's breeding. For instance, breeding a dog with inferior pigment to another relative with poor pigment is downgrading color pigment. One should never use albinos themselves for breeding. Question: Suppose an albino has perfect type? Answer: No matter, do not use it. With time, patience, and intelligence one can acquire an equally good type in a sound and healthy animal. Deafness and weak eyes frequently accompany albinism. Question: Are there any colors which should not be bred to white? Answer: Whenever white is bred to another color, a risk is taken. Remember that the white color is caused by two recessive blocking genes in combination with other genes. When white is bred to another color which does not carry these recessive blocking genes, any color which these may have blocked in the white may come out. For example, if a white which carries black that is masked by the blocking genes is bred to a brown, very likely the puppies will all be bad blacks. If such a white is bred to gray the color of your gray is not likely to appear in the puppies. If you are lucky, you may get a blue, but most likely you will get poorly colored blacks or grays. This is provided that the silver carries none of the white genes. In that case you may get a white. Question: Is white popular in the show ring and with the public? Answer: It is the best color of all, in my opinion, for show purposes. The dazzling purity of white arouses sympathy and admiration, and the color contrast of the black eyes and nose is truly beautiful and dramatic. It is very hard for any color to defeat a good white. On the other hand, white puppies do not sell as well as the darker colored ones. People feel that they will get dirty too easily and be hard to keep as house pets. Question: Are there many white lines and top winning dogs from these lines? Answer: There certainly are, in all three varieties. The great winning whites are too numerous to mention. All three of these dogs produced many Best in Show winners. All three are behind a great many winners in their varieties. Both Duc and Promise are behind the excellent white Standard line established by Alekai, which includes many famed winners see Alekai Kennel story. Koeppel's Champion J. Indeed, white Poodles have brought many honors to the breed. WHITNEY University of Nebraska Well-groomed white Poodles, with the contrasting colors of their jet-black noses and white coats have been popular in some of the European countries for a long time and are beginning to be favorites in some sections of this country. There are two kinds: the ivory-whites with a few apricot-colored hairs in their coats, indicating that they would have been apricots if they had not been white; and the snow-whites or ice-whites with a few black hairs in their coats, indicating that they would have been black dogs if they had not been white. Their white color is caused by the activity of a pair of recessive genes, the extremely white piebald genes which prevent the formation of pigment in the hairs. Spotting Many amateur Poodle breeders consider themselves fortunate in having selected solid-colored breeding stocks with which to start their kennels. They even may boast of their solid-colored puppies but, after a while, one of their puppies may be born with small white spots on its chest. Its appearance seems a mystery and immediate resolutions are made to destroy it with the hope that there will be no more born like it. Such hopes are seldom realized! The white spots are the result of the activities of recessive genes which have been in the stock in an inactive state, perhaps for many generations, until in the present mating, when two of them have been inherited by the puppy, one from each parent, forming a pair which at once begin to prevent the formation of pigment in the hair of small areas on the chest. The other puppies in the litter were lucky in not receiving a pair of these genes, but probably received one which they may pass on to their offspring for making white spots in later generations. Some of the dogs in other breeds, as Fox Terriers, Collies, Pointers, Cocker Spaniels and others, have larger white areas or spots in their coats due to another pair of recessive, depigmenting genes. In the white Bull Terrier the white area is so large as to nearly cover the whole coat sometimes it does , leaving only a black spot of color on the head or ear. A third pair of recessive, depigmenting genes, the extremely white piebald genes, cause the large white area to further increase in size so as to actually cover the entire dog, but leaving a few traces of the original coat color in a few of the hairs, as in many of the white dogs of other breeds. The nose, eyes, lips and footpads are not affected but retain their original black color. Ivory-white Poodles The white Poodles having traces of apricot colors easily may be identified by placing either the dog or a generous sample of its hair against a white background of paper or cloth. The ivory tints will be evident at once. There is considerable variation in the extent and depth of the apricot coloring in the coats. Sometimes it may be a conspicuous biscuit colormg on the ears or even throughout the entire coat, but in others the traces are practically unnotice- able to an ordinary observer. Some people state that there also may be pink tints in the coats of some dogs. In many coats the apricot hairs may be readily seen in direct sunlight or by using a reading glass or in microscopic prepara- tions of hair samples. Snow-white Poodles The white Poodles having traces of black hair easily may be identified as ivory-whites by placing them against a white background. No ivory tints will be seen but their coats will be a cold-white color. Some dogs, however have more traces of black in their coats than others, and may appear slightly grayish in places or throughout their entire coats. An examination of the coats in strong sunlight usually will show a few black hairs, or by using a hand lens, or by observing prepared samples of the hair under a microscope. Puppies As the genes for white are recessive, a pair of white Poodles always produce white puppies, which may appear whiter than their parents, owing to more enclosed minute air globules in their hairs than in adult dogs. When the puppies mature, very few of their new, small fur hairs contain air globules, resulting in a diminishing of the intense whiteness in their adult coats. A pair of ivory-whites will produce ivory-white puppies. A mating of an ivory-white, with an apricot-colored dog will produce all apricot-colored puppies in various shades of apricot, which are likely to fade readily in the sunlight. A pair of snow-white dogs may produce either snow-white or ivory-white puppies, depending on whether or not they carry apricot genes in their underlying black color. The submerged black and apricot in the white dogs may carry as many recessive-color genes as any ordinary black or apricot dog. No one can predict with any assurance, what the colors of puppies will be when one parent is white and the other one colored, except in the mating of an ivory- white and an apricot. Two white dogs mated to colored ones have been reported to have produced not only black, apricot and white but also brown and silver puppies. Blue and the undesirable black-and-tan genes may be carried by apricots and blacks, so no one should be surprised to see these colors appear from the matings of some of the whites with colored dogs. As all the genes for the various kinds of white spotting are recessive, a single one of these genes may be carried in a dormant state for many genera- tions in solid-colored Poodles. But when it meets another similar gene in a puppy, white areas are developed in the coat. It was reported some years ago, that after 19 successive generations of black breeding, a pure white extreme white piebald puppy was born in a litter of black puppies. At that time it seemed unexplainable, but with the present knowledge of the laws of in- heritance, such a sudden appearance of a white puppy is no longer mysterious. From: This is the Poodle — Lester H. It is dazzling. It stands out especially when the group and best in show awardsare done at dusk. But since every fault stands out so clearly the white showdog must be much better than a black. Whites have improved so tremendously in the past few years that they area very popular color again with the public, in fact the Toys than any otherfor a medium priced tiny pet. Pale creams with their jet black noses anddeep eye rims and appealing little faces are also eagerly loved. Actually the color "white" in poodles covers as wide a range as any othercolor. Granted a white may vary from the white of fresh snow to a cream sopale it appears to be white. The great difference in whites occurs not really in the color of the mature dogs coat as in the color of the pigment. There are whites with black noses and dark skins, whites with brown noses, whites with pink skins and whites with spotted noses or black noses and spotted skins and finally whites with dark and fading noses. Now the public does not usually expect a jet black nose at six wks. Many lines of whites are, as puppies, buff colored all over. Some misinformed people call these apricots. Most turn creamy white at maturity. Now a breeder insists on a black nose at six wks. There is very little difference on the mature coat color of a stark white to a pale cream but there may be a much wider variety in the pigment by which Imean nose color, eye rim color and skin color. The Poodle Standard in color reads in part: "White poodles have black noses, eye rims and lips. Black or self colored toenails and very dark eyes. I have seen best in show white miniatures with spotted skin and many with faded noses and these have become champions. However, most breeders will agree that a dark skinned snow white with jet black non--fading pigment is the ultimate aim. Bred together they breed true. However, for practical purposes the almost black skinned light creams which appear white are also excellentas seldom does the pigment fade and they almost always have dark skinfurthermore they can usually be bred to off nosed whites for all black nosed puppies. Personally I would far rather have an ecur or milky colored white with great pigment than a stark white with fading nose or a half pink eye rim. The faint difference of coat is so little compared to the total effect. Variations of whites at 6 wks. Coat color varies a. Skin color varies a. Note spots on stomach. Remains spotted throughout life. Nose pigment varies a. Jet deep blackshould not fade. Will fade at maturity. Some people like pink skinned white with black noses and others prefer dark skinned white with black noses. Either is correct. White bred to white usually produces white. In my experience it always breeds true. Only the all over dark skinned whites with no skin color-break may be bred to color. Pink skinned and especially spotted skinned whites are dangerous as the spots may become spotted hair instead of only the skin. Unless you really know your line it is safer to stay within your color. But when you have a white irrespective of what colors it came from you can on my experience, safely breed it to another white irrespective of it's color background. When you have your litter of tiny black nosed stark white puppies with their little fat purple stomachs I can assure you there is nothing so beautiful. You will never get tired of just looking at them. To get pigment in your puppies, chose a black skinned, black nosed sire either white or light cream 3. Do not breed a spotted skinned white to a darker colored dog. Use ordinary corn starch as a cleansing agent. Keep on white paper or towels. There are, however, two very different types of whites and they are often difficult to distinguish between at maturity. These are the true whites ice whites or paper whites and the cream whites which are so light faded as to appear totally white. The two terms "white" and "cream" should not be used loosely and incorrectly as they so often are. It can be seen that they are absolutely different colors, though both recessive-the first the total absence of color, the other the furthest dilution of brown. Professor David D. Whitney's summary and conclusion after extensive examination of hair samples of a number of white breeds, including white Poodles, stated "The Poodles with icy white coats belong to the black hair type, those with warmer tones in their white coats belong to the yellow hair type. Corroborated by microscopic examinations and breeding reports. Thus, scientific data confirms the experience of practical breeders. It is, of course, obvious that white dogs of colored breeding that carry even a tiny amount of color even in a few hairs of their coat are not genetically white, and undoubtedly carry cream and possibly apricot genes as well. The late Commander T. Norman Hinton wrote in the English Our Dogs of considerable work done by him and other British breeders on this subject. His finding was that many white Poodles that look white are in reality faded creams and not genetically pure white at all. He believed, after a great many years of breeding whites exclusively, that the puppy that is whelped cream and later turns white is simply a faded cream and should be considered cream throughout life. The fact that the color bred whites usually offered far superior genetic background for type as in the cases of Ch. Snow Boy of Fircot and Ch. Summercourt Square Dancer of Fircot made them popular at stud. In addition to superior type, the cream whites usually have dark skin pigment, black points and non-patterned skin. The cream whites, primarily through Square Dancer and his great influence, have dominated the Miniature show ring for years. The glistening ice white Standards as best exemplified by the earlier Alekais are seen less frequently due to black crosses at Alekai and elsewhere. Cream or cream whites are often beautiful animals with excellent pigment. Acadia Command Performance, Best in Show at Westminster in , was a beautiful example of a faded cream. The point being made is that there are two different types of whites and breeders should be aware of this fact. Fortunately, two whites or faded whites , irrespective of their back- grounds, will produce a whole litter of whites or faded whites with no mismarking problems. By Mackey J. Not just tan, more yellow in tone and a lighter color than the lightest tan. The eyes are deep, soft brown; the jet black eye should not appear in a cream, being unbecoming to this color. Eyerims, nose, lips, and toenails are a very dark brown or black. The skin is blue and sometimes a tawny pink; it , should not be spotted. Common Faults: Such dogs may have white toenails. This is a very minor fault and should not worry the breeder. Such dogs may have liver nose and eyerims. This, too, is a very minor fault and should not worry the breeder. Such dogs may have lemon colored or pale tan ears. This is a fault in the ring but need not disturb the breeder. Such dogs may appear streaked in color, such as lemon or pale tan streaks up the back. This is a show fault but need not disturb the breeder. Such dogs may have light brown eyes, almost yellow in tone. This is a fault in the ring, and the I breeder should hesitate before using such a dog. Light eyes are hard to overcome, particularly in light-colored dogs. Such dogs may fade to almost a pure white and have, nevertheless, brown rather than black eyes and brown rather than black noses. They often do, and this is just unfortunate in the ring, as it destroys their chances. It need not disturb the breeder unless he, too, has considered the dog as a white. The difference between a true white and a faded cream is as follows: The true white has no lemon or pale tan in the coat. There is no "streakiness" in the coat of a true white, while there is in a faded cream. Question: Is cream a true color? Aryswer: Yes. It is not just a dirty white. The puppies are born cream, sometimes darker than the adult. Question: Could one establish a cream line? Answer: We think one could, but it would be difficult because creams seldom reproduce the same shade as themselves. They usually tend toward white. We do not know of a cream line. Question: What is the best color to preserve cream? Answer: Another cream related on the cream, not white, side of the pedigree. Question: What is the best color to breed away from creams? Answer: White. Question: What colors are not advisable to breed with creams? Answer: Black, blue, brown, cafe-au-lait, gray, and apricot, in that order. Question: Have there ever been any great show winning creams? Answer: Indeed there have been, both here and in England. Champion Braevel Biscuit was another. Question: Is cream a popular color in the show ring and with the public? Answer: Not particularly, as this color all too often is considered a poor white. The color is not as dramatic as the pure white. The public often considers a cream a poor white, thus cream puppies do not sell too well, By Mrs Hoyt — The Book of the Poodle The color of good, rich Jersey cream. AKC removed this color from the poodle color choices years ago. Champagne is now encompassed into the cream category now. Cream standard pup at 6 weeks Cream miniature puppy.

The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. I have a full guide on English cream Goldendoodles here that you should definitely check out to learn more about them. Apricot People love teddy bears; it is a fact that has been existent since the beginning of teddy bears. Their gorgeous coat can also get lighter with time. Red The red Goldendoodle, like the apricot Goldendoodle, is one of the most popular coat colors for Goldendoodles. Red Goldendoodles resemble teddy bears too. They are adorable. If you want your Goldendoodle to have symmetrical black and white on their coat, your chance is even lower. It is not guaranteed that your Goldendoodle will have the exact amount of black and white in their coat. The reason that they are so rare is that the parti gene will not necessarily pass through. I bet you are curious about the colors and patterns of a Goldendoodle too. Check out what I discovered. Can a Goldendoodle be black and white? While there are many colors of a Goldendoodle, black and white is less common and even more rare if perfect symmetry is desired. Goldendoodles come in a wide range of colors from their hybrid background that consists of two distinct purebred dogs. The black and white Goldendoodle can be called a tuxedo Goldendoodle for the tuxedo Parti pattern their fur color has. It looks like the dog is wearing a tuxedo. This color can be harder to come by. This coloring can be hard to produce because it requires that one of the pure breed parents be bred with a Parti colored Poodle. They can also be known as abstract or mismarks to identify the irregularity of their coloring. There is no guarantee that the coloring will pass through to the puppies with the black and white color. Those individuals looking for a black and white Goldendoodle can rest assured it is possible. With a reputable breeder that is knowledgeable and skilled, the likelihood that a black and white doodle can be produced is favorable. Goldendoodles come in a wide variety of colors and patterns with black and white together being just one of them. The Goldendoodle is a crossbred dog that comes from two distinct purebred dog breeds. With that being said, they carry with them the possibility of many color variations from their parentage. With a wide range of colors to choose from, an incredible array of patterns can also be created. The black and white Goldendoodle being one of them. The black and white coloring of a Goldendoodle is less common than perhaps the other golden or cream colors. While it is possible to get a dog with this coloring, it is a bit harder to produce. The type of breeding that is required can make the coloring unpredictable. Due to this unpredictability, it can cause the litter to vary. If the coloring does come through, it can vary from dog to dog, having one black and white dog that only has a white paw. Another dog of that same litter might have a different pattern, and yet another may have white spots on a mostly black coat. When it comes to genetics and breeding, the more or less you want something in the next generation, the more prominent or weak it has to be in the parents. Do all Goldendoodle breeders attempt to achieve black and white coloring for their clients? Each breeder will be unique in what they will and will not breed. Any reputable breeder will follow a set of standards that protect the health of the Goldendoodle breed and the puppies themselves, regardless of color or pattern. In the end, the health of the puppies and the safety of breeding for each animal must be considered. That being said, many breeders will attempt to produce a black and white Goldendoodle. However, many hope that most clients will understand that there is the possibility of variances in coloring. Many breeders, like their clients, can believe it exciting to achieve a particular appearance on a Goldendoodle. In the end, however, they realize and hope their clients will understand that the black and white color of a Goldendoodle is secondary. While adopting a black and white Goldendoodle in a family may be hoped for, other qualities like temperament, shedding, and health are more important. What other colors are available besides the black and white Goldendoodle? There are numerous colors and patterns for a Goldendoodle besides black and white. One of the purebred parents produces a dog with a golden coloring, which can come in light, medium, or dark. The other purebred parent has the possibility of several different colors. Beyond that, there are also unique colorings in each of the two purebred dog parents that are possible, including the black and white and patterns, including the previously mentioned Parti patterns. With this large number of colors, a breeder can create a wide variety of color possibilities in the Goldendoodle dog breed. Not all breeders are the same so potential pet patents need to research well before choosing a breeder for the best outcome regardless of color. If the black and white Goldendoodle coloring is unpredictable and rare, are they also more expensive? Yes, a Goldendoodle of black and white or other patterns can be more expensive. Many factors however, determine the price of a Goldendoodle. The mixed colored dogs of Parti and other patterns will generally cost more. The location of the breeder and client can factor into pricing as well as the breeder. Their experience, years of breeding, and knowledge play a part in how costly their puppies will be. A good reputation as a breeder may warrant a pricier puppy, but health and character should have no limits. Most people looking at a Goldendoodle, regardless of their coloring, want their dog to be healthy, strong, pleasant, and happy. Other factors that determine to price for a Goldendoodle, regardless of whether they are black and white, include their size and the supply and demand. Smaller Goldendoodles may come with a smaller price. Larger Goldendoodles can come with a bigger price tag. Age, whether they are a rescue, adopted or purchased from a breeder, and health of the dog, litter size and timing can all factor into the price. Whether the dog is golden, brown, and black or black and white will play into the final price tag. Does the coloring of a black and white Goldendoodle affect their health due to their genetics? Yes, it is possible for coloring to potentially be related to health issues but not in a direct way. This is true of the Merle black and white color pattern of a Goldendoodle. The Merle color pattern, which is produced by a particular gene, can cause health issues. These issues can include an increased risk of blindness, deafness, and certain forms of cancer. Finding a skilled, knowledgeable, and the experienced breeder can prevent these issues from cropping up in Goldendoodle puppies. Knowledge of parental background and safe breeding practices must be used. Will the black and white coloring of the Goldendoodle affect personality and temperament? Yes and no. The black and white coloring of Goldendoodle should not affect their temperament. It can be a factor in their personality. Their breeding determines this unique part of the Goldendoodle. Who they are genetically, the character of their purebred parents will determine the outcome. Personality also is determined by genetics but is individual to the dog and can, of course, be affected by outside sources, including environment and lifestyle. This can be similar to how a person might feel wearing a suit and tie versus wearing a Hawaiian shirt and khakis. Is it possible to change the personality by the color they wear, yes? Does it always alter the personality, no. Does the generation affect how much black and white a Goldendoodle can have? Yes, the generation of the Goldendoodle can affect coloring as it does everything else about the dog. Certain qualities can be watered down, absent, or increased with each generation. Final Thoughts While a black and white Goldendoodle might be less common than other colors, all Goldendoodles share that adorable cuteness and wonderful companionable personality. When deciding to welcome a Goldendoodle into a family, choosing the color might seem like the most important part. Health, character, and connection, however, should be the final deciding factors! Goldendoodles typically reach their full size by the time they are one year old. However, their coat may continue to grow and change in color until they are two or three years old. Are Black and White Goldendoodles Rare? Black and white Goldendoodles are not particularly rare, but they are certainly unique. As with all hybrid breeds, the color of their coat is determined by a combination of genetic factors that cannot be known until they reach adulthood. Coat Fading: What Causes It? Goldendoodles often have their white fur fade to a cream or apricot color as they age. Coat fading occurs when the pigment-producing cells in the white coat die off over time, resulting in a lighter shade of fur. With proper care and nutrition, however, this fading process can be slowed down somewhat. Black is another common coat color for Goldendoodles. A black Goldendoodle full grown may look quite different than a white Goldendoodle, but can still be just as beautiful. Black and white Goldendoodles are also becoming increasingly popular for their unique look. Many reputable breeders offer these dogs, although they may be more difficult to find than other colors. You can also check your local animal shelters or look for adoption postings on social media sites like Facebook and Instagram. In some cases, it may even be possible to meet a Black and White Goldendoodle in person! For instance, a white Goldendoodle full grown may require more grooming than one that is still a puppy since their white coats can be prone to matting and tangles. On the other hand, if you are interested in finding a black and white Goldendoodle instead, there are several things to keep in mind. Firstly, you should know that the white patches on black and white Goldendoodles typically appear as they mature into adulthood. Ultimately, whichever type of Goldendoodle you choose — white, black and white or otherwise — make sure you do your research first! Good luck! The cost of black and white Goldendoodles varies depending on the breeder and quality of the pup. While this may seem expensive at first glance, consider that these dogs are usually worth much more since they are hypoallergenic and low shedding — two features that many pet owners look for when choosing a new pet! You will have a loyal companion who is sure to bring you joy for many years to come. The Bottom Line In conclusion, yes a Goldendoodle can be black and white! They can often be confused with a cream Goldendoodle or a tan Goldendoodle. The apricot Poodle color was the last one accepted by the American Kennel Club in .Some breeders believe the color came about as a rare combination of brown, blue, and silver genes. Since the American Kennel Club accepts the Brown Poodle as an official breed, you can be sure of coming across many brown Goldendoodles at the dog park. The brown Goldendoodle coloring mostly comes from the Poodle dominant genes. However, it often carries a gene color of silver and black. Therefore, you can breed two different brown Goldendoodles and get different colored Goldendoodles since two recessive genes mask the black coloring. If you breed two brown Goldendoodles, you get a parti, sable, or phantom Goldendoodle, depending on the K, A, and S locus. Therefore, you may not get the same color when you breed two colors together. Red Goldendoodles The red Goldendoodles are also among the most sought-after coat colors. This is because their coat resembles that of a teddy bear. They have a red mahogany color that is the brightest of all the coat colors. However, it is regularly conceived by mixing a normal-colored Golden Retriever and a darker-colored poodle. Black Goldendoodles This is one of the unique Goldendoodle varieties. They are just as playful and intelligent as the other color varieties. A black Goldendoodle is a genetic diversity factor of a recessive gene that can be found in either the Poodle or Golden Retriever. To get a black Goldendoodle, both the Poodle and Golden Retriever will need to carry the recessive black gene. Therefore, black is rare compared to red Goldendoodles or apricot Goldendoodles. Cream Goldendoodle Some people confuse the cream Goldendoodle with a Labradoodle or white Goldendoodle because of the light-colored coat. The cream is an official color accepted by the American Kennel Club for Poodles. If you look at the phantom Goldendoodles, merle Goldendoodles, or parti Goldendoodles, you will notice that the cream color is commonly used for breeding a multi-color coat. They are usually unique because their physical attributes can vary from one dog to another. Some may have lighter toenails, lighter shades of eyes, and light brown noses. Many cream Goldendoodles usually have pinkish skin underneath their coat. The cream color has the largest variation of physical attributes. It is hard to spot two cream Goldendoodles with the same features. Their secondary color can be any color, although the common ones are tan and apricot. Recessive genes create these colors. It is extremely rare to get a parti Goldendoodle that is not a multi-generation Goldendoodle with more Poodle genetics. To create a parti-color Goldendoodle, you must breed rare recessive genes with other rare recessive ones. It is difficult to predict the color of a parti Goldendoodle without an extensive DNA test. They have specific features, such as a white nose, a white chest, and a streak of white on the head. They are sometimes referred to as the Tuxedo Goldendoodles because of their colorings. To get a black and white Goldendoodle, you need to breed a parti Poodle and a Golden Retriever and hope the genes pass through. Therefore, they are extremely rare. They can also occur from breeding a Goldendoodle with another Goldendoodle, although this is very rare. Their color is the opposite of the parti Goldendoodles. Merle combinations are dominant genes that override a solid color. If you want a merle Goldendoodle, one of the parents should be merle-colored and mask the recessive genes. You should never breed together two merle-colored Goldendoodles because of the dominant genes. If you breed them together, your merle Goldendoodle puppy can be deaf, blind, or have other deformities. They are born a dark brown or a solid black as a puppy. As they age, the solid color will fade as the coat grows. Eventually, they mature into a lighter cream or a tan Goldendoodle with black stripes. Phantom Goldendoodles Phantom is a rare color for Goldendoodles. Unlike parti Goldendoodles, phantom Goldendoodles have two colors in specific locations of the pet. The coloring location is similar to that of a Manchester or a Yorkie. Phantom Goldendoodles have a primary color that covers most parts of the body. These dogs are mostly black and tan, although the results may vary. There are several black, red, and silver mixtures for phantom Goldendoodles. Since puppies are often born with markings, it is easy to tell if your puppy will be a phantom Goldendoodle. While their coat is extremely rare, they have the same temperament and traits as other color varieties. Grey Goldendoodle The grey Goldendoodle is similar to a silver Poodle. They are initially dark black at birth but turn grey at 2 years when their hair clears. After two years, they will look like rustic silver and no longer black. You can also get a grey-colored doodle by creating an Aussiedoodle, a mixed designer breed between a Golden Retriever and an Australian Shephard. Tan Goldendoodle Tan Goldendoodles are a combination of the cream Goldendoodle and the apricot Goldendoodle. They usually have shades of white and apricot in their fur. Their attributes are from the standard Golden Retriever. Conclusion While black and white Goldendoodles are less common than other varieties, all Goldendoodles share that wonderful companionable personality and adorable cuteness. If you plan to add a Goldendoodle puppy to your family, purchase from a breeder that will offer your desired coat color. You will also need to consider other things like connection, character, and health. Sharing is caring! Can Goldendoodles be black and white, or can you get them only in golden shades? Quick Answer Goldendoodles could be black and white but are extremely rare for unexpected genetic combinations. As Goldendoodles are a mixed breed, they receive genes from both breeds, Golden Retrievers and Poodle, and the gene of black color is recessive in this breed. Thus, it can happen, but the possibility is quite low. But, it will be great to know that Goldendoodles have plenty of other colors in varying coat patterns. So, it is not over; this breed has many other qualities that make this dog special. Can Goldendoodles be Black and White? Goldendoodle could be black and white but are extremely rare. There are up to 32 Goldendoodle coat colors in a curly, wavy, or straight pattern. The reason for this extensive color variation is their origin, as Goldendoodle is a mixed breed. Golden Retriever and Poodle are both pure breed dogs, and their combination resulted in Golden doodle. So, they have the qualities of both dog parents. As per the American kennel club , the Golden Retriever has colors such as dark golden, light golden, or golden. At the same time, the Poodle has standard colors including apricot, brown, blue, cream, gray, and silver. So, the coat color and other characteristics are inherited and give Golden doodles in a huge variety of colors, including black and white. Similarly, the reason for the black coat in Goldendoodle is the involvement of genetics. Black Golden doodles are rare because of a recessive gene found in Golden Retrievers or Poodle. To get a black and white Goldendoodle, you need to breed Golden Retriever with Parti Poodle, hoping that desired genes pass through to give extremely rare black and white Goldendoodle. If you also love them and want to raise them, take a quick round of facts about Goldendoodle to understand the basic idea of their habits and characteristics. Little to No Allergy Problem Goldendoodle is known as a hypoallergenic dog breed. As allergy is related to dander that is shedding dead skin cells or flakes of skin on his fur, the Goldendoodles have thickly curled hair with little to no chance of shedding, so the chance of releasing dander in the air is low. When there is no danger in the air, you will be safe from allergies. So, if you cannot keep a dog due to an allergy, Goldendoodle could be your best partner. Family Dogs Normally, dog owners are concerned about kids at dog places as they can hurt them anytime. But the good news is Goldendoodles are perfect family dogs because they are extremely friendly and are naturally inclined to be careful with infants and toddlers. They also prove patient companions for children as they grow up. Plus, they become fast friends with children, cats, and other dog breeds, and there will be no aggressive fights among your pet family. Love Water One of the major issues of many dogs is they are afraid of water and cannot accompany them at pool parties. But Goldendoodles are exceptional. They have a special affiliation with water and love swimming, whether in the lake, at the beach, or in your backyard swimming pool. Take Goldendoodle on water rides and enjoy your summer! Goldendoodles vary in Size If you are looking for a dog for your kids or are not ready to own a big dog, Goldendoodle would be ideal for you. These are mini Doodles and the cutest of all. Easy to Train and Groom Dog training and grooming is one of the most important parts of pet parenting, as you cannot live comfortably with dogs without training them. Some dogs are quite aggressive, and they hardly follow your instructions. But on the contrary, Goldendoodles are easy to train and groom. They keep following your advice and become the best dogs. Similarly, they have less shedding and require less grooming. Just brush them every few days with a slicker to remove loose hair and bath when needed. When your pup gets shaggy, have them clipped every 8 weeks. Remember, Goldendoodles are susceptible to ear infections because of the thick fur around their ears. So, keep inspecting their ears or cleaning once a week will also reduce the chance of infections. Obedient and intelligent Golden Retriever and Poodle are two of the top five most intelligent dog breeds , and so are the Goldendoodles. They are very responsive, intelligent, and smart. This smartness and obedience also help in their training. But you should know obedient dogs become bored easily. Thus toys that provide mental stimulation or activities are necessary to keep them busy. Fun-loving and Playful Dog Breed Goldendoodles are companion dogs, and they are full fun-loving. Instead, they have fun with their pet family. They can only sit in the dog apartment with an enriched environment with toys and plenty of playful items. Similarly, you can engage them in parks with games like: Flyball. Black and White Goldendoodles do not shed much at all. They only drop a few strands of hairs here and there throughout the year. That is why they are classified as non to low shedders. Harmony History It all started with Samoyeds Way back when I was in elementary school, my family purchased our first show dog. Cotton was the beginning of my mother's Trailblazer Samoyeds. Fifty years later, Judy Mears is still well respected in the Samoyed community. Mom taught me a lot about dogs, but most importantly how to be an ethical person who gives back to the dog show community in every way she is able. Over the years Trailblazer has had top winning and top producing Samoyeds - teaching me how to be a humble winner who is proud of her dogs. There have been more than 30 Trailblazer litters - teaching me about pedigrees, genetics, birthing, death and that there will always be a lot of things out of the control of the breeder, but we can alway learn. Mostly what growing up with Samoyeds, taught me is all of life is about the relationship you build with dogs and with people, but in the end it is all about the dogs. His name was Jeffrey. He was for a minute, but he was a great companion his whole life. He was a very nice poodle we purchase from a local Denver breeder in .Davin finished as a puppy primarily handled by me. Davin was specialed for a short time by Kathy Adams and Betty Brown. Mandie had six puppies - a big litter for a mini. We were, and still are, very proud of this first litter. Derby produced Ch Midnight King Mowgli. In , Mandie bred to Davin produced another littler. Two puppies had phantom markings and two puppies with color dilution alopecia CDA. In a nutshell, the puppies are born with gray hair which starts falling out and becoming thin and scraggly in just a few weeks. These four puppies and their two black litter mates grew into healthy well loved pets, but did give us pause for concern. Debby and Ch Clarion Camelot Quevro produced an amazing litter of healthy puppies with outstanding structure and friendly, outgoing temperaments. The bad news was three of the four were phantoms. But it came time to either stop breeding and enjoy our wonderful pet Poodles or to come up with a new game plan. Luckily God answers prayers. Davin had already gone to live with the person who owned his son, Derby, but Derby had come to live with us for me to show. Debby was the first to find the perfect home, but over the next year Mandie and Derby also found wonderful homes. Mandie has since come back home because of the death of her person, but believe me when I say these three dogs found their perfect people. Through our interactions with Ann Kennedy and her daughter Katherine Kennedy Vigil, we already knew we wanted to start over with a Clarion bitch. In , just after finishing her championship at the Poodle Club of America National Specialty, Ch Clarion Arcadia came to our house and became the foundation of our line of Poodles. Arcadia produced three litters of puppies. All have been outstanding. She is retired from breeding and enjoying Rally training with her grand puppies. TJ finished his Champion and Grand Championship very quickly. He has gone on to do some performance work, which he loves. His next adventure is to be a therapy dog. TJ was bred to three different bitches. As of April , he produced four champions and has two other pointed puppies. He also has one puppy with performance titles and three others in training. See TJ's page for pictures of his puppies. We have decided to retire TJ. He has produced some excellent puppies, but both his son, Prince and his nephew, Loki have more to offer our breeding program at this time. These three beauties have been the foundation of what is currently "Harmony Poodles". We have high hopes for the puppies out of these girls as well as the future generations of Harmony Poodles. Arcadia with her daughter Polly and granddaughter, Eleanor. Handled by Kathy Adam. When they came to us it was obvious they had never been handled at least not nicely by humans. They were both completely feral and would spend all of their time hiding. Howie 13 lbs has made wonderful progress with his foster mom. He gets excited to see her, will come up to her and allow her to pick him up and ask to be petted. He is still very fearful of her walking towards him and not allowing him to come to her and of fast movements but we are very happy with his progress. Keep in mind when he goes to a new home he will need lots of time before he trusts someone like he trusts his foster mom but we know he has it in him. He has made very small steps in progress but it has been minimal. He is going to take a much longer time to open up and in all honesty may never be a completely normal dog. Neither boy is potty trained. Jace cannot be free in a yard as you will never be able to get him back inside and neither boy likes a leash so potty training at the moment is a little impossible. They will need to go to a home that has a social dog to help them learn. We understand that it is going to take an extra special and patient home for them. Someone that has the time and patience to work with them and allow them to open up on their time. If you think you are their special, perfect home then please submit an application at www. Please buy and shop responsibly, or adopt a dog in need. Are they doing OFA clearances on hips, elbows, eyes, and heart at 2 years of age? Do they recommend not to spay until 2 years of age to ensure hormones help growth plates close properly? Are they showing their dogs in some type of AKC sanctioned event? Conformation, hunt tests, agility, fun sports such as dock diving, etc? This shows the breeder is dedicated to the dog, not the check from breeding. Does the dog have AKC titles? From Canine Good Citizen, to Trick Dog, to Championship Conformation titles — you want your breeder to be helping make the breed better. They should be in every generation, not 3 generations ago. Does it destroy toys, does it eat the wall, do they have to be crated, do they counter surf, are they walked on a simple slip leash or a harness? Nothing against doodles, but ensure your breeder is doing proper health testing and x-rays. You as a buyer need to know that down the line this could lead to health problems and vet bills that could have been avoided. Just because your dog is registered does not make it well bred. You want your breeder dedicated to the breed and only whelping puppies that meet this minimum criteria for well bred dogs. We pride ourselves on having a very select, well-planned breeding program, producing top quality Labrador Retriever puppies that you will be proud to own, and love to live with. All of the dogs in our breeding program come from excellent pedigrees, with Champion bloodlines. However, we feel that the most important job our Lab puppies have is bringing years of joy and companionship to their humans. Summerland Labradors was established in , and through selective breeding we strive to not only improve our own breeding program with every litter being better than the last, but our goal is to better the breed as a whole. Our objective is to produce a Labrador Retriever that excels in all aspects of life and conforms to the highest standards of the American Kennel Club. Health and soundness is of great importance in our breeding program, therefore all of our adult Labradors have had their hips and elbows cleared through the OFA, have their hearts cleared, are PRA and EIC tested, and have their eyes cleared through a Veterinary Ophthalmologist before they are considered for breeding. Generally, we only have litters a year, so we will occasionally have Labrador Puppies available as outstanding family companions. Our Lab puppies are lovingly raised in our home under the watchful care of our whole family; they are well socialized around children, different textures, surfaces and noises to ensure that you get the sweetest addition to your family. When you are ready for an incredible addition to your family, we encourage you to Contact Us to be notified of our next available litter, as our Lab puppies are often sold before they are born.
