Caramel is a popular Labradoodle coat color that refers to the color of caramel candy. Of course, not all caramels look the same. Some are dark and some are light. The same is true of caramel Labradoodles! Labradoodle breeders and breed experts report that caramel Doodles have brown nose leather and coat shades that range from very light to very dark. A Labradoodle described as caramel may very well be the traditional golden brown, but you may also see dogs described as ice, cream, or red caramel. The caramel color group is distinct from other Labradoodle color groups like chocolate and apricot, even though variations in shade can make them look somewhat similar. Labradoodles can also be partially caramel in color. Most Labrador fans know that there are 3 official coat colors for the breed. A Lab can be solid yellow, black, or chocolate. Labradoodle breeders will tell you that nose leather color is key to coat color. The other Labradoodle nose color is black. Labradoodles labelled as caramel will always have brown noses, not black ones. If you see a brownish Labradoodle with a black nose, it will be either red, apricot, or cream, depending on the shade. A caramel Labradoodle can have a solid coat with that classic caramel candy color, but there are also plenty of variations in caramel coloring as well as coat markings to choose from. This lightning is not unique to Labradoodles. Coat color changes, like color itself, are also due to genetics. There is a gene that is often called the progressive greying gene or the Poodle fading gene that causes coat color to lighten in Poodles. This greying gene can be inherited in some Labradoodles. There is also a different gene that causes dilute pale coat color in dogs, but the color will be light at the start and will not fade gradually. Avoid getting your puppy from a pet store or online ad, as many of these dogs come from commercial breeding operations known as puppy mills. The eyes are generally a brown shade. Parchment: Born a milky chocolate color and turning a smoky cream color when grown up. The nose pigment color is rose or brown. Caramel: Slightly darker than a cream Labradoodle, close to the color of caramel candy. These pups have rose colored nose pigment with a hint of honey along with hazel or amber eyes. Apricot: Born with a lighter color coat, similar to the caramel colored Labradoodle, that darkens over time. Their nose pigment color is typically black. Apricot Cream: With apricot colored ears, these Labradoodles have a lightly shaded coat. The color is usually warm cream with black nose pigment. Red: The rarest color of Labradoodle coat shades, these pups have a black nose pigment. They are also the hardest to breed. Cream: When born, these Labradoodles are slightly darker. Later they turn to a warm cream color. The nose pigment is black or rose colored. Raven Black: Born in a black coat, these Labradoodles have black nose pigment with shiny eyes. The entire strand of fur on a golden Labradoodle should be the same color. Golden Labradoodles often fade as they grow. These dogs are neither common or rare. So, they are more likely to get a fleece or wool coat. Choosing an f1b puppy is a great way to increase your chances of bringing home a fluffy Labradoodle. Australian Labradoodle Coat Types The Australian Labradoodle mix contains influence from up to 6 different purebred dogs, rather than just the Poodle and Lab. According to the Australian Labradoodle Association, this breed variety is available in fleece or wool varieties. Are Fluffy Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? These types of Labradoodle can be low shedding. The wool coat type is actually the lowest shedding coat type available on this mix. The tight curls in the coat also tend to catch any shedding fur. However, neither of these fur types are hypoallergenic. Coats can be low shedding and still trigger your allergies! And this is because the allergens that trigger allergy symptoms are mostly found in canine dander and saliva. Curly coats will still catch most shedding dander, and saliva-covered hairs. But, you might find yourself reacting to other things your dog licks or chews — like soft toys or bedding. Many studies have suggested that the best way to minimise allergy symptoms lies in a good cleaning regime. Wash soft toys and bedding regularly. Wool Labradoodles have the most Poodle-like coat — so their needs will be very similar to the purebred Poodle. They will likely need to be groomed at least once a day to remove tangles. Some owners like to use a slicker brush for this. But, you might prefer using a comb to get through really stubborn mats. A fleece coat Labradoodle will have loose waves rather than tight curls. So, knots and tangles in their coat may be a little less common. But, they will still need to be brushed at least twice a week. This may need to be more frequent if your Doodle is on the curlier side. A slicker brush is another great tool for this coat type. But, for more advice, speak to a professional dog groomer near you! Many Labradoodles, especially f1 Labradoodles, will grow up to look like Labs. They might not be as fluffy as you imagined they would be! I believe this is an evolutionary feature that developed from decades or centuries of Labradors being used in the colder climates as fishing dogs where they were trained to help fishermen retrieve fishing nets and fish that had escaped from nets. Their coats have a slightly dry and yet oily consistency. Labradors love the water and they even have webbed toes. The webbed toe can also work as a kind of snowshoe in colder climates by stopping snow building up between their toes. Which is a really cool evolutionary feature of this breed. Their teeth and bite are delicate and they can carry stuff in their teeth, even eggs, without damaging them. They are known for a perfect, regular, and scissor bite and their upper teeth are closely overlapping their bottom teeth and are set square to their jaws. I have read stories of Labradors rescuing drowning infants and toddlers by dragging them to safety, which is pretty awesome. Labradors shed — a lot — in some climates Labradors will shed hair twice a year and possibly even more frequently in hotter climates. The double interwoven coat combined with a warmer climate will mean you will have a lot of dog hair around your home. That said, the data suggest that Labradors are pretty flexible whichever climate you live in. They clearly demonstrate their ability to survive the cold Canadian winters, including swimming in the ocean. But if you do, they will likely shed more hair. The solution to this is regularly bathing your Labrador and brushing. Your Labrador will likely love swimming and after this kind of activity, I would recommend you give your best friend a good bath to avoid having lots of muddy footprints around the house. Underneath the guard coat is the undercoat, which is typically softer than the slightly wiry guard coat. So, your Labrador already has a built-in mechanism to manage their coat and they must not be shaved — there is absolutely no need for it. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security.
