Boxer Dog House Training Overview Housebreaking your Boxer does not need to be a struggle of wits or will power between you and your dog. How do you properly house train a Boxer? By following 2 main rules: 1. Use a method that prevents your Boxer from eliminating inside the home. Provide and offer an area to relieve themselves that is both easily accessible and available when they need it. Keeping these 2 training rules in mind, housebreaking your Boxer can be done without stress or frustration. Rule 1 The goal is for your Boxer to not eliminate inside the house but how do you accomplish this? It is really easier than you might think. There are 2 basic methods. Watch them like a hawk - If you are lucky enough to be able to stay home with your Boxer until he or she is house trained, you can use the Umbilical Cord Training Method. If you are away during the day, default to this method any time that you are home and it can be reasonably incorporated. You will simply put a leash on your Boxer and tether the other end to you. You may connect it to your belt loop or around your wrist. The important element is that your Boxer will never be more than 6 feet away from you. With this method, you will take your Boxer puppy outside every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old and so on. The less a pup is allowed an opportunity to have an "accident" inside, the more successful the house training will be done. And we must remember that essentially there are no accidents. When nature calls, a puppy will urinate or eliminate where they are at that moment. Bladder and bowel muscles are not at full strength and the Boxer has little control in regard to holding needs. Therefore, it is the owner's job to make sure that their Boxer is outside in the bathroom area, at the time that the body calls for it. The other method is confinement by crating and is not recommended. For times that you cannot be right with your Boxer puppy , it is best to have him in a gated off area. If the room that you choose has carpeting, it is recommended to obtain a piece of linoleum, that will not be installed, it will simply be placed down. It's a good idea to keep the gate open when you are home, allowing your Boxer to check things out and even play, should he choose. It will allow him to get used to the area for times when you are not home. Do keep in mind that without full control over holding his needs, he must still be taken out at the times mentioned above. When you are not home, pee pads or paper can be placed down; however do not expect your puppy to learn 2 methods of housebreaking. The beneficial element is that it will be confined to one space easy to clean up and as the Boxer grows, he will be able to hold his needs for longer periods of time, with the end result being able to hold on for the 8 hours or so that owners are away for work. Rule 2 You must clearly show your Boxer where you expect him to go to the bathroom. If there are any doubts in your dog's mind about where he is supposed to eliminate this will make for one confused dog. And, it will most likely lead to that dog just giving up and going inside the home. Choose a spot that works well in all weather. What looks like a great location on a warm spring day may not work so great when your older, trained Boxer has to hike thorough a foot of snow to reach it in the winter. The area should be roughly 8 feet in diameter and used for nothing else but bathroom needs. If you want to play with your Boxer or do some outdoor command training , do this after he goes to the bathroom and in a separate location at least 15 feet from the bathroom area. The location that you choose as the main spot for your Boxer to use as a bathroom is vital. A dog will become very confused if you show them a new area each time you bring them outside. Just having the yard or "somewhere outside" is not specific enough and will impede progress. The 1 complaint that owners have in regard to housebreaking their puppy is that he or she urinates or eliminates right after coming back into the house. While this may just be a matter of the dog's body not having the need while outside, most of the time it is because an owner did not give the dog an opportunity to do so. Puppies need to sniff around - stand in the center of the chosen area - and with your Boxer on a 6 foot lead, allow him to sniff away any where within that diameter. As they are sniffing, their body is readying to push out a bowel movement and an owner must allow for enough time to go by for this to happen. The mistake occurs when an owner heads back in with their Boxer, only minutes before the dog is ready and that is when the dog eliminates seemingly right after entering back inside. As digested food moved through the intestinal tract, the puppy clenched bowel muscles in anticipation of being taken out. A pup needs 15 to 20 minutes to find just the "perfect" spot and to relax enough to do the deed. How to Begin Using the above Umbilical Cord Training Method Each time your puppy makes a motion that implies that they are about to eliminate, you must bring your dog outside to a designated area. In some cases, you may need to pick up your puppy and run to that spot - expect to do this several times, as even finishing in the designated bathroom area is preferred to not at all. Still give praise even if he only finished up there. Don't scold for what's been done inside, as again, the dog went to the bathroom in the area he was in at the time. Taken outside enough will stop this from happening - and don't worry, as your Boxer matures, he will be able to hold on for about 1 hour extra, for each month that he ages. As soon as your Boxer is done with their business, give tons of praise. A puppy has no idea that he did something right, unless it is conveyed to him via words and at times, additionally a treat. You do not need to give your dog a treat each time they "perform" good; but you should shower your Boxer with pats and tons of happy and excited words. Act as if your dog just did the best possible action in the world! A dog aims to please their owner; if you make your Boxer feel as if he did something extraordinarily wonderful, he or she will be prone to do it again. This does not need to be done forever. Once a dog performs enough repetitions of a certain action, it becomes habit. However, an occasional "good dog! Block off certain rooms that are not in use and use a gate to keep your Boxer on the level of the home where you are. If "allowed" to have accidents, they will continue to believe that they can go urinate or eliminate inside of the home. Even if you yell "NO! Be sure that it is large enough for the pup to: play, sleep, eat and go to the bathroom. Crating does not work when a dog is left home alone. Canines do not care to go to the bathroom in a confined space, but if left with no other choice, they will.Bring your Boxer out about 20 minutes before you leave. Bring him out as soon as you arrive back home. Don't scold for any messes that occurred while you were gone, it makes no sense to reprimand a dog for a natural bodily function. Leaving Your Boxer Outside There are several reasons why a Boxer of any age should not be sent out into the yard without supervision. The Boxer is among the top dog breeds that are stolen. Where are they taken from? Their own yards. A fence may keep other dogs out, but it will not keep out a thief intent on jumping over the fence to take your helpless puppy. Until a Boxer is old enough to scare off a thief, do not leave your puppy outside. In addition, outside elements such as the hot sun can quickly overheat a dog causing heat exhaustion, which ultimately leads to death if treatment is not given in enough time. Your Boxer puppy should be taken out many times during the day, given that he or she sleeps through the night: When they first wake up After each meal times a day Before bedtime A general guideline in house training a dog is that a 2 month old Boxer puppy can hold its needs for 2 hours, a 3 month old for 3 hours and so on. The maximum time that any dog should ever be expected to hold their needs is 8 hours and this is for a full grown adult canine. Taking steps to help your Boxer sleep through the night can also help to some extent. Keeping in mind that meals must be spaced apart from exercise to help prevent bloat , a good bout of cardio about 2 hours before bed may help a pup sleep better through the night. Dog treats Dog crate Boxers are energetic and highly intelligent dogs. They strive for attention and love to please their owners. Although Boxers are quick learners, they tend to be stubborn when they do not want to do something. It is important to train Boxer puppies at an early age, as they can become hard to train and control. One of this first things you should do when you get your Boxer puppy home is to potty train it. Begin potty training when the Boxer puppies are at least 7 weeks old as they are now able to walk and learn. Make sure to start training as soon as possible. If you start potty training when the puppies are over 12 weeks of age, it will be more difficult for them to learn. They will have developed bad habits that will be hard to break. Choose a location in your yard where the Boxer puppy will go to the bathroom each time he goes outside. Always take the puppy to this one location when it is time to go potty. Do not confuse the puppy by taking him to a new location each time. Use the leash to lead the puppy to the location that you had chosen in Step 2. Stay in this area until the puppy has gone potty. Reward the puppy in this manner every time he has finished going to the bathroom. Create a consistent routine. Take the Boxer puppy outside to use the bathroom at the same times everyday. Putting the Boxer puppy on a regular feeding schedule will help you predict when the puppy needs to go potty. Repeat this process until the Boxer puppy is no longer going to the bathroom in the house. If you have a fenced-in yard, the puppy should be able to go to the bathroom on his own without a leash. This can take several weeks or more to accomplish. Tips It is important that you stay consistent with your training. Apply these steps in the exact same manner each time. Your puppy will learn much faster because puppies learn by repetition. If you do or say something different each time you take your puppy out to potty, you will confuse him. Watch for signs from your puppy that he needs to go to the bathroom. If your puppy is sniffing around, circling, whimpering or scratching at the door, he probably needs to go out. It is recommended that you purchase a dog crate if you cannot supervise your Boxer at all times. Make sure you purchase a large enough crate to accommodate your Boxer. You will need to crate train your puppy to ensure that he will not go to the bathroom throughout your home. This does nothing to help your puppy learn faster. Punishing will only make the puppy afraid of you. Instead, ignore your puppy when he has an accident and clean the mess up right away. Be patient and keep rewarding your Boxer puppy whenever he goes to the bathroom outside. Add New Question Question I've had my boxer pup for about 3 weeks. She's still going pee and poop in the house, even though I've been taking her out frequently. Have I failed already? She graduated from the University of Glasgow in with a degree in veterinary medicine and surgery. She has worked at the same animal clinic in her hometown for over 20 years. Veterinarian Expert Answer No, not at all. Each puppy is an individual and some understand what's expected quickly, others take more time. Just be sure to watch her like a hawk when she's indoors, and at the first sign of sniffing to toilet pop her straight out. Don't leave her unattended indoors, but use a crate for those times when you can't be with her. Also, take her out often, but stay with her so you're there to make a big fuss when she does go toilet outside. We're glad this was helpful. Thank you for your feedback. Veterinarian Expert Answer Boxers are extremely boisterous and playful by nature, so this sounds entirely normal if unwelcome behavior. Get your son to practice "Sit" and "Look" commands every day at home. When he brings the dog to visit, have him exercise the Boxer well first to burn off excess energy. When the Boxer goes to dive bomb the Lab, distract him by squeaking a favorite toy, then have him Sit and Look at you to break his attention away from the Lab. Avoid merely shouting at the Boxer to stop, as this is rewarding the behavior rather than preventing it. To this end, consider a longline in the house so you can control him without shouting. Always check your equipment to make sure it is in good order and not liable to snap or break. Training works best when you dedicate a couple of short sessions 10 to 15 minutes twice a day to it. Try to train at times when the dog is not tired, but also not bursting with pent-up energy. Karen Pryor. Publisher: Ringpress Books Consider expending your Boxer's energy before training sessions by allowing him 20 to 30 minutes of high-intensity physical activity. This will enable him to better focus on training. Try to train the dog in a place where there are few distractions, so that your Boxer puppy can focus his attention on you. This means avoiding places with other animals or people. Always begin training in your home or yard and build up to environments with more distractions e. Your commands need to be simple, short, clear and consistent. Don't lecture your dog; they're not human so they don't process language in the same way. Phrases like "I've told you not to do that" or "Please stop chewing on the table" will not work as they are too complicated. John Bradshaw. Publisher: Penguin Experts believe that a given dog registers the first part of the word as the most important, so longer commands such as "Sit Fido if you want a treat" are liable to confuse him. Just say the word "Sit" instead. In general, shouting at any dog is ineffective. This is especially true for Boxers who are hyper breed by nature. Use a firm but pleasant and upbeat voice when instructing your dog; don't yell or lose control. Dogs are very intuitive and will be able to sense your frustration and may react in kind. The tone of voice matters, especially since, again, dogs don't process language in the same way that humans do. So how you say something may mean as much if not more than what you say. Publisher: Penguin Boxers are playful by nature, and a light, breezy tone will not suffice; he will think you are just playing with him if you are not firm enough. Try using hand gestures at the same time as you issue verbal commands. For example, raise your hand at the same time as saying "Sit". Dog behaviorists believe that dogs look for multiple clues as to what we want them to do, which includes the command word, tone of voice, and body language. Admonishing a Boxer puppy too long after the incident is ineffective. If you need to admonish or correct your dog, it needs to be done during or within a few seconds of the act. Dogs will have forgotten the event within seconds of its occurrence, so it's key to address the behavior immediately in order to facilitate the retraining process. Boxers are notoriously stubborn and steadfast, so you may have to correct your puppy numerous times. Always be consistent in your commands and desires of the dog. This helps your dog to understand what is expected. Don't forget to enforce training when you are out and about, so that your dog doesn't just thinking that "Sit" and "Stay" are things he has to do in the yard or house. By enforcing commands in public places it helps your Boxers to understand he must obey under all circumstances. Leave no room for doubt about what is acceptable behavior for your Boxer puppy. If he is not allowed on the furniture, be consistent. Boxers won't understand the concept of "sometimes"; they are either permitted to lie on the couch or they are not. If you live with other people, make sure that everyone in the house is on board with the training program. Using different words for the same action will confuse the dog, disrupt the training already done, and ultimately delay progress. The Boxer is a loyal, intelligent, affectionate and eager to please dog. Making them easy to train with the right consistency and approach. I have more detailed tips on this routine coming up in the next sections. Consistency and routine all roll up into what I like to call the proactive potty training approach. By keeping one step ahead of your puppy and getting them outside to potty, before they begin to circle the living room, you will save yourself a lot of clean ups. Boxers , and most dogs for that matter, are easy to house train when you keep these 3 ideas in mind. To reliably potty train a Boxer it will take as long as 6 months. Some dogs can be potty trained a little earlier, some a little more time is required. When your Boxer puppy is able to go without any accidents consistently for weeks, you are pretty much done potty training. Patience and practice will be needed throughout this process. You can set yourself up for success perfectly, but accidents will still happen. Clean up the mess, and try again next time. Yelling, screaming, hitting, or rubbing their nose in it is very ineffective. It would be the same as doing this to a baby that poops in their diaper. Not only is it not effective, it can create behavioral issues such as fear and anxiety in your dog. Just clean up the mess and move on. Remember that if you puppy has an accident in the house this is your fault, and not your Boxer puppy. Next time try to be more consistent and proactive in your approach to potty training. There will be plenty of opportunities for redemption. Your Boxer needs to know that what they did at that exact moment makes you very happy, and they get a treat or affection in return. Be patient this could take a few minutes. Once your Boxer puppy has done their business immediately reward them and shower them in praise. The goal here is to set your excitement at the beginning as neutral. Then get super excited and pleased the moment they finish going potty. Consistent positive reinforcement like this will quickly connect with your puppy and make potty training a fun experience for them. You are going to need to show them the ropes and control your environment to make house training easy. Having a designated spot in your yard is a good start, but controlling the environment in the home is important. Tip 4 Pick Your Potty Spots If you have a backyard, or have access to a grass area outside your home somewhere, use this as your training area. Bring your Boxer puppy to this same area each time you bring them outside so they can make the connection that this is where they relieve themselves. When you are in the home with your puppy it is important to control the environment. You may live in a large or small home, and each area of your place is a potential potty spot, until your puppy learns otherwise. Slowly allow access to these different areas of the home once they learn the previous room was a no potty area. Getting yourself a puppy play pen to give them room to play and be comfortable is a great way to control your environment and not have them sneak off to another room to do their business. It is always ideal to have your Boxer puppy go potty outside on grass when house training. This can be tricky at times for those of you that live in say a high rise apartment building. There are better alternatives however. Puppy pads, besides being bad for the environment, are also an unnatural texture for your puppy to learn to go potty on. Simulated grass, or actual grass as your alternative to potty pads in these situations is a much better way to show your puppy where to potty. I lived on the 10th floor of an apartment when I got my Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy. Naturally covers up the smells, earth friendly, and lasts for weeks, unlike one time use puppy pads. This product is such a brilliant idea. This will not only teach your puppy that grass is the spot to potty, but is just so much nicer to have in your home or on your balcony compared to those stinky, ugly, and sometimes messy potty pads. Check out Doggie Lawn as a great potty pad alternative. These tips alone saved me countless clean ups in the home once I learned them. Had I known a few of them before getting my Staffy , I may not have even needed the balcony potty pads. By being proactive in their house training, you can make this learning even easier for them. Getting your Boxer puppy out to potty every couple hours is a good step, but an even better system is to get them out any time they: Wake up in the morning. Wake up from a nap. Finish eating or drinking. Start to sniff around the room. Whine or whimper near the door Come out of their crate. Following these 7 simple routines saved me so many clean ups. These also teach your Boxer that once these activities are completed, that they will have a chance to go outside. Buying you a few extra minutes to get them outside. Having the routine and understanding that you will get them outside after naps, playtime, meal time, etc… will show your Boxer puppy a solid potty training structure. This kind of proactive potty training approach is hands down your best tool. I would highly recommend that your crate train your Boxer. This can not only assist in making your house training easy for your Boxer, but is a great way to give your dog a relaxing and comfortable place to be when you are away from home. This is instinctual behavior for even puppies. By crate training your Boxer puppy this can give you an opportunity to control your environment and prevent accidents in the home. Just be sure to be proactive and bring your Boxer puppy outside as soon as you let them out of the crate. Getting the proper size crate is important in potty training as well. You want your Boxer puppy to have enough space to stand up and turn around, but not so much space that they can take several steps in a row. Too big of a crate will give them a corner to pee in, and too small of a crate is just not good for the dog to move. As your dog goes from puppy to adult they will need more space, and instead of buying new crates over and over you can use the iCrate divider panel. The iCrate is one of the top selling and highest rated dog crates on Amazon. A very affordable and high quality crate that will last you the lifetime of your Boxer. Check it out over on Amazon. For example a 2 month old Boxer puppy can stay in a crate for 2 hours, and so on. Puppy or Adult. If you can come home from work on your lunch break to let your dog out for a stretch, a potty break and some play for 30 minutes that is great. Rover will send you updates via the app on when your dog was picked up, dropped off, where they went, whether they did their business, and other fun personalized notes. Rover has a network of professionals in both United States and Canadian cities available. Check them out at Rover. A Boxer puppy should poop anywhere between times a day. Sometimes more depending on their level of activity and the amount of fiber and type of food they are eating. As long as it is a solid healthy stool. If you notice that your puppy is having loose, inconsistent stool or diarrhea throughout the day then something could be wrong. When your dog has had inconsistent runny stool, or there is blood and diarrhea for more than hours, it is time to bring them to the vet for a look over. A professional will be able to better assess what is making your puppy not feel well. Adult Boxer dogs will poop as many times as times a day. This is slightly less than a Boxer puppy. So long as they are having consistent, firm stool you should be just fine. If you notice blood, runny and inconsistent poop for more than hours then consult with your vet. When I first notice my Staffy has inconsistent poops I will feed her some natural pumpkin and 9 times out of 10 that helps firm things up. But always check with your vet if you are concerned. Adult dogs will need to relieve themselves 3 — 5 times a day. This can depend on their activity level and the amount of water they have consumed. Puppies have much smaller bladders and will need to go pee far more often. Between 5 — 8 times a day is fairly common for young puppies. When you find that your dog is being far more frequently, and perhaps having accidents in the home after being potty trained, or just outside, it could be signs of a UTI. Final Thoughts Boxers are easy to house train when you follow these simple 10 tips. The consistency, routine, proactive approach and a little bit of patience will get you and your Boxer puppy to your potty training goals. These first few months may seem like they will never end, but trust me they do. Taking the time to follow set up your Boxer puppy up for success, and moving passed accidents with a calm and positive attitude will make all the difference. Recent Posts. Their energy and happiness is just great. To help them with their high energy needs you should take them on really long daily walks and runs. You can do this in mild weather versus hot weather though as they are quite heat sensitive. Taking your boxer puppy out on a walk is the first step to potty training a boxer puppy as they will learn that there are certain times of the day that they can go out for a walk and relieve of themselves in the outdoors, versus just anywhere in the indoors. Boxer puppies can be really stubborn, sensitive, and proud so you have to handle them with care. The most important way of leading this puppy is to be upbeat, loving, and persuasive. Boxers are great no only as loving and cheery companions but also as watch dogs. They will alert you with their barking when something is unusual. They are very protective, and very territorial. This makes them great guard dogs as well. Boxers are great dogs for those who want a medium sized dog, for those who want a dog who they have to groom only minimally, for those who want playful and happy dogs, and for those who want a dog who is loyal, steadfast, reliable, and protective of you. For those dog owners who cannot handle the high energy and the stubborn characteristics, as well as the rowdiness and exuberance, perhaps this type of dog is not the one for you. These boxers are so loyal that they are very obedient to the right trainer and the right type of training. Boxers have above average intelligence compared to other breeds. They have a special guardian role when children and their masters are concerned. Tips on Housebreaking a Boxer Puppy When you are house training a boxer puppy, remember that your boxer puppy is mostly likely stubborn. Especially if they are still really young, newborn, or are an 8 week old boxer puppy. For up to 8 weeks, these puppies can be really stubborn, energetic, and at first harder to train. Later on, the 6 month old boxer puppy for example gets a lot easier to train. Consequently, at 8 weeks is generally one of the best times to start breaking in your boxer puppy in the household for potty training. Make sure not to struggle with your puppy for power, but instead, go along with their puppy ways, and their puppy behaviors. The main goals are to make sure that your boxer puppy does not eliminate and relieve of himself inside the home. The second goal is to provide an area for them to relieve of themselves that is accessible and available as needed. The next goal is to take them out on regular walks to get out their bouncy needs for physical activity while at the same time as giving them the opportunities and the appropriate places to relieve of themselves. Next, make sure that when you are housebreaking a boxer, to watch them closely, and all of the time to observe their routines, patterns, and behaviors. Soon you will basically be able to remind them enough times not to go in the house until they are completely house trained. If you really need to at first, you can have a leash on the puppy all of the time so that it is always next to you in order to train it. As long as the puppy is next to you for most of the day, it will be easier to ensure that it does not get into the habit of eliminating indoors. Another way to train the puppy is to take it outdoors often enough so that it gets a chance to go. For example, if they are only 8 weeks old, make sure that when you are potty training boxer puppies so young that they are taken outdoors every 2 hours. When they are a bit older, like at six months, they can go out only every 6 hours or as needed. This gives these puppies plenty of time to eliminate outdoors in an appropriate setting. Soon they will learn that outdoors time is potty time! This is the optimal situation, plus it gives them time to play outdoors and we know that the boxer puppy loves to play outdoors in mild weather conditions. When you are first learning how to potty train a boxer puppy, you can take them out whenever they wake up from a nap. This includes before breakfast, and before bedtime. You should also get in the habit of taking them out after every meal. When you notice your puppy squatting or lifting a leg, do use this opportunity to move the puppy outdoors before they eliminate. The less time you give the puppy and the less opportunities you give the puppy to eliminate indoors, the less they will do so, until they are only used to eliminating outdoors from then on. They are not able to control or hold in their elimination patterns and so you do need to go easy on them a little bit. At first, it will be the pet owners impetus to make sure that the Boxer puppy is at the right time in the right place for eliminating. This is why we for the most part recommend that you bring them out on walks as much as possible while they are young, including after meals specifically. As your Boxer puppy grows up from 8 weeks to 6 months and beyond, your puppy will be able to hold in his elimination patterns for much longer periods of time. At this point you can raise your expectations for not eliminating indoors and waiting until outdoors. Also, an older puppy will likely have stronger muscles of bowel and bladder and therefore be able to hold it in for longer periods of time that way as well. With an older Boxer, you will be able to communicate with him or her more clearly and show what your expectations are. You will also have the luxury of being able to expect that your Boxer puppy not eliminate while you are away at work, in doors, but wait until you are at home. This is one great thing about these really determined willful dogs. You really need to be on your puppy from early on though in the potty training regimen so that they respect you, understand your guidelines, and meet your expectations for potty training. As they get older, use their intelligence and above average smarts to your advantage. Show them and communicate clearly with them to show them where you expect them to go to the bathroom. A dog might get confused quite easily if you constantly give them mixed messages about what you want them to do. Eventually the puppy will just give up on trying to please you and just eliminate anywhere they see fit. Make sure the area that you want them to go in is actually 8 feet or greater in diameter. This will keep the communication clearer. Always bring them to the same consistent place outdoors when you do your training with them. This is essential for communication purposes with your Boxer puppy, especially when they are younger. Sometimes this is because they did not have enough time to stay outdoors and finish what they started. Sometimes the puppy may not have had the drive to go outside, but then tried to. This is not the Boxer puppies fault, but it is because of the fact that they do not yet have good control over their bowel and bladder functions. At first, your puppy may need to sniff around to be sure that they are comfortable with the area you have chosen for their elimination. They may also just be exploratory, wanting to learn all about that area. It is important to allow them time to sniff around and for their thoughts to reach the bowel and bladder functions. Once your puppy is relaxed, they will move their digested food through their intestinal tract in order to eliminate. A newborn pup takes minutes to find the right spot. After that they need about 10 minutes to do the deed. When you are first training, keep a close eye for symptoms and signs that they need to eliminate, then bring them to the spot you would like them to eliminate right away. By watching their signs and symptoms you will be able to anticipate their elimination needs much faster. Sometimes if they have just started indoors, you can still pick them up to show them that they should not finish indoors, or pull them on their leash. This is still very important for the trainer to do. Another important point is not to get mad at your puppy for doing it wrongly at first. It really will take a while before they will be able to. Still give praise even if he only finished up there. As soon as your Boxer is done with their business, give tons of praise. A puppy has no idea that he did something right, unless it is conveyed to him via words and at times, additionally a treat. Act as if your dog just did the best possible action in the world! When you show that your puppy has done something so wonderful, they will try to keep doing it again and again and again. You want to keep giving them positive reinforcement until they have the behaviour as a long term habit. The reason why you want to avoid accidents in the home as much as possible, is because even if you give them negative attention from making mistakes in the home, they will still see this attention as valuable and important. This will not help the process of potty training at all. Make sure to gate off areas where you do cannot monitor the puppy at least until they get bigger and have a better sense of control of their bowel and bladder functions, as well as until they learn the potty training regimen well. Another great tip is to make sure to allow the puppy to go outdoors to eliminate before you leave the home, and to do this again once you come back. Try not to give negative attention for mistakes that your Boxer puppy might make along the way, or while you are away from the home. If you feel safe in your neighbourhood you can actually also take your Boxer puppy outdoors in a fenced off area. Make sure your puppy is not in the scolding hot sun, and also make sure your puppy is old enough to be able to handle the outdoors or any animals that might be passing by your yard so that it is safe for your puppy. Finally, when you are housebreaking your puppy make sure that you pay attention to when you are feeding your puppy water. After you feed your Boxer puppy water, make sure that you give it a chance to relieve itself of their drink about 15 to 20 minutes afterwards. This small and simple tip will really make a difference. With all of these tips in mind, you should be able to easily get to know and potty train your newborn and newly purchased puppy. Most of these tips have been tried, tested, and true. They will always want to please you, and your new puppy ownership experience will be incredibly rewarding. There is information that details several effective methods of puppy potty training techniques for Boxers How to Potty Train a Boxer Puppy Tips to easily housebreak your Boxer puppy So, you just brought a new Boxer puppy home and you need tips on potty training. Well, you have come to the right place! First off, Boxers are highly intelligent dogs that are known for being exceptionally clean in their living environments. This spells out to Boxers are one of the easier dog breeds to potty train. In fact, most Boxer owners will tell you that it only takes about one to two weeks with consistency and the right training. Others have even gone as far as to say they are cat-like in their cleanliness. At any rate, given consistency and the proper training, you will have your Boxer puppy potty trained in no time. The first thing to remember is that all dogs learn best through positive reinforcement. Many times owners simply want to scold their dogs for bad behavior, but forget to praise them for good behavior. Just remember to take an approach closest to what you hope to accomplish. In other words, if you hope to gain positive changes in your dog, then go about correcting the behavior with positive encouragement. Given that, make sure you take your Boxer puppy to the same door and area of the yard each time you expect the puppy to do its business. The puppy will be intelligent enough to realize that is the gateway to the potty area. So, this does not mean that you will not have to keep an eye on your puppy, because you will! In fact, all puppies are equivalent to two year old children. In other words, it is your responsibility to keep an eye on your puppy each time he or she is out of the crate. When it comes to potty training, each time the puppy goes to the bathroom outside tell him or her how good they are and even reward them with a treat. This will make the dog want to use the restroom outside for the sheer enjoyment of positive attention from you. It really helps to talk to your dog; if you get the dog used to hearing the same phrases over and over for certain actions, the dog will soon begin to associate the phrases with the actions. Crate training a dog can be a great way to help them feel comfortable and safe in your home. But there are a few things you should keep in mind if you want to be successful using a consistent routine. Ensuring you follow the tips listed below will make for an easier time training your pup. Choose the right size crate. Your pup should be able to stand up and turn around inside comfortably. Put the crate in a quiet, out-of-the-way place. Placing a blanket over the crate will help make it more comfortable as they will be in a den like environment. Make the crate inviting. Put a soft blanket or pillow inside and give your pup some of his favorite toys to play with. Get your pup used to the crate gradually. Start by putting him in there for short periods of time and gradually increase the time he spends in there. Great ways to do this are to leave for a few minutes at a time at first, and then extend your trips out of the house by half-hour increments. Never use the crate as punishment. Your pup should always associate the crate with positive experiences. Be patient. It takes time for pups to learn that the crate is a safe, comfortable place. With patience and consistency, your pup will be crate-trained in no time! Boxer Puppy Potty Training Tips Accidents happen, but with a little patience and perseverance, you can potty train your boxer puppy in no time. The key is to be consistent with your commands and rewards, and to have a little patience. Here are some tips to get you started: Start with short training sessions and potty breaks. Trying to potty train your puppy all at once is likely to overwhelm them. Start with short minute sessions a few times a day. Use the same command each time. Consistency is key to training in any command you might try to teach them. Reward good behavior. If your puppy does their business outside, be sure to give them plenty of praise and a treat. This will help them associate going potty with something positive. Watch for warning signs. Take them outside right away so they can relieve themselves in the right spot. You can avoid this by attaching them to your hip with a leash so you can keep a better eye on them. Establish a routine. Accidents happen. Instead, clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner to remove the scent, and then take him outside immediately so he can finish his business in the right place. Do not rub their nose in the accident. This will do nothing but make them more anxious about the entire process. Be consistent. With these potty training tips, you can have your pup house-trained in no time. Be consistent with commands and rewards, and stay patient—accidents happen! Starting with using positive reinforcement, such as treats or praise, whenever your pup enters their crate will help to create a good association. You can then leave them in the crate for short periods of time with each training session, gradually increasing the time they are in there. This will help them get used to being in there for longer periods of time during the day, or even at night. Doing so will unnecessarily stress them out and cause more issues than you started with. If you need to leave them there for longer periods of time, provide them with plenty of toys and chewies to keep them occupied or this may cause destructive behavior. Leave the crate open for your pup to go in and out of as they please. This will teach them the crate is a safe space where they can retreat should they feel overwhelmed. As mentioned, placing a blanket over the crate will create a den and cause denning, one of the natural instincts where your pup will only sleep in their crate and come out to relieve themselves. This will cause your pup to associate being in there with negative things and make the training process that much harder. If they have an accident in the crate , simply clean it up and move on. Remember, accidents happen. No matter how well you think you have things under control, there will always be times when your pup has an accident. The key is to not get frustrated and to keep working with them, take them out for bathroom breaks often, and always stay positive. Related: Why is my pup digging in his crate? Potty Training Without a Crate While crate training is more effective, some people do not want to use a crate or cannot use a crate. For those people, here are the basic rules for potty training without using a crate. Remember to be patient and consistent with your dog, as it may take them longer to learn where they should go potty without crate training. When potty training a dog without a crate, you need to take them out for frequent bathroom breaks. Using a baby gate to confine them to a small room works just as well as a crate. You need to take your dog out frequently, especially after they eat or drink. Puppies usually have to go potty every few hours, so prepare to take them out often. Always praise your dog when they go potty in the right spot to give the act a positive association. This will only make your puppy afraid. Just clean it up and try again next time. It is possible to start potty training an 8 week old puppy, but it will take longer since they are still learning. However, some pups may take longer if they are resistant to training or if their owners are not consistent with the potty training regimen. Meal time with a regular feeding schedule is especially important to use for training purposes. This will improve the older they get and with basic commands in place. How long does it take to potty train a Boxer puppy? It can take several weeks to a few months to toilet train a Boxer puppy. It depends on how quickly they learn and how often they have accidents. If your pup is having trouble learning, or seems to have trouble holding it, it may be something your vet should check as there could be an underlying health issue. How do I stop my Boxer from soiling in the house? If your Boxer is peeing in the house, the best thing to do is to give them plenty of times during the day to relieve themselves. You may also need to confine them to a smaller area. They should be able to stand up and turn around in the crate. If they potty in the house, ensure you clean it properly and do not punish them for having an accident. This will only cause undesirable behaviors and it will take longer to train them. Having an intelligent and high-energy breed such as the boxer can make training challenging if not done right. What are the signs that my boxer needs to go potty? Some signs that your boxer needs to go potty are sniffing around, circling, or barking. Sniffing around is the biggest sign you should look out for. If you see any of these signs, take them outside right away to avoid an accident. Conclusion Anyone who has potty trained a puppy knows it can be a bit of a challenge. Housebreaking takes time, patience, and a lot of trips outside. Well, never fear! It is possible to potty train a boxer puppy without locking them up in a small space. If you are seeking boxer puppies for sale or adoption, please visit our Breeders page. At the bottom half of this page is specific breed information about the temperament and traits of a boxer. If this breed is available in a teacup, toy or miniature size it will be mentioned below. The boxer is exemplary in its combination of stylish elegance with strength and agility. It is square-proportioned with good substance and musculature. Its stride is free and ground-covering, with proud carriage. Its head is distinctive, with a broad, blunt muzzle and alert expression. Its coat is short and shiny. It is perfectly suited to serve as a working watchdog. The boxer is playful, exuberant, inquisitive, attentive, demonstrative, devoted and outgoing; it is a perfect companion for an active family. It can be stubborn, but it is sensitive and responsive to commands. It may be aggressive toward strange dogs, but it is generally good with other household dogs and pets. The boxer needs daily mental and physical exertion. It likes to run, but its exercise needs can also be met with a good jog or a long walk on leash. It does not do well in hot weather and is generally unsuited to living outdoors. It does best when allowed to divide its time between a house and yard. Some snore. Its coat needs only occasional brushing to remove dead hair. The boxer derives from two central European breeds of dog that no longer exist: the larger Danziger bullenbaiser and the smaller Brabenter bullenbaiser. Bullenbaiser means "bull biter," and these dogs were used to grab large game wild boars, deer and small bears after it was at bay, hanging onto it until the hunter arrived to kill it. This required a strong but agile dog with a broad powerful jaw and a recessed nose to enable the dog to breathe while its jaws were clamped onto an animal. Similar attributes were required of dogs used in bull-baiting, a popular sport in many European countries. In England, the bulldog was the favored breed for the sport, whereas in Germany large mastiff-type dogs were used. Around the s, German hunters began a concerted effort to create a new breed, crossing their bullenbaisers with mastiff-type dogs for size, terriers for tenacity and, finally, bulldogs. The result was a tough agile dog with a streamlined body and strong grip. When bull-baiting was outlawed, the dogs were mostly used as butcher's dogs in Germany, controlling cattle in slaughter yards. By , an entirely new breed, the boxer, had been established. Although the exact origin of the name boxer is obscure, it may have been derived from the German boxl, as they were called in the slaughterhouses. The boxer was one of the first breeds to be employed as a police and military dog in Germany. By , the breed had become established as a general utility dog, a family pet and even a show dog. The AKC recognized the breed soon after, but only in the s did the breed begin its steady rise to the top of the popularity charts, eventually peaking as the fourth-most popular breed in America.

Another American breeder John Lucero played a pivotal role in developing this breed, calling his dogs American Bandog Mastiff. Temperament This intelligent, confident, docile and loyal breed has the ability in indentifying suspicious human behavior, thereby emerging as great protection dogs, loving and protecting the family till the end. If socialized, they get along with cats and other dogs. Generally good to children, they might become their self-appointed baby sitter. Not being good to visitors when the owner is not at home, they may also howl constantly in his absence. Care Exercise With proper physical and mental exercise, they do not become lazy and destructive. Thought they live well in apartments, a home with a large fence yard is ideal. They also enjoy their daily walks with their owners. Grooming Brushing their short coat regularly with a firm bristle brush, will help removing dead hair and dandruff, whereas rubbing with a clean cloth after brushing will help in retaining the gloss. Frequent bathing is harmful for the skin, but trimming their nails and keeping their eyes and ears clean helps in preventing infection. If they have wrinkles, it should be cleaned with a wet cloth or baby wipes and dried with corn starch or baby powder. This breed has a tendency to drool, so their mouth should be wiped after meals. Health Problems Like all other cross breeds they also may acquire the ailments of their parents. Other health problems include eye diseases, hip and elbow dysplasia, epilepsy, autoimmune thyroiditis, different types of cancer and skin problems. Having a deep chest, it can suffer from gastric dilatation volvulus or bloat. Training This mighty, easy-to-train breed needs a firm, assertive trainer who can control their dominant nature. Socialization along with obedience training is needed to be given since its puppy days to make it disciplined and well-behaved. Feeding They should be given good quality dog food and artificial supplements are to be avoided. Clean drinking water should be always available as they often feel thirsty. Because of their drooling tendency, their bowl should be washed and water changed, as they do not drink the soiled water. Interesting facts The term Bandog or Bandogge originated in Middle England around to , talking about a kind of mastiff dog that was chained in the day and freed at night to guard. They are good therapy dogs. However, these dogs are so adorable as puppies that many people often adopt them without giving it the proper amount of thought. The food costs are exorbitant, though, and you should expect a whopper of a vet bill every now and then. They can also be prone to behavioral issues if not properly trained and socialized. Just keep in mind that your home will get smaller after you bring one into it. You better know how to swim, because these dogs drool. When you combine two breeds that are already known for having overactive salivary glands, you get a mix that can flood your entire house. It may sound adorable and it often is. They have no idea how big they are. However, they generally weigh well over pounds. Also, they have no idea where their feet are at any time, and they will definitely step on you. They love being the center of attention. They constantly crave affection — and at their size, they have no problems getting it. They make up for it by being incredibly sweet, though. Masti-Bulls are fun-loving and affectionate, but they can quickly get serious if they perceive a threat. They will not hesitate to protect their families, making them great guard dogs and equally good babysitters. Despite their agreeable nature, they have sad-looking faces, especially their solemn eyes. Are These Dogs Good for Families? However, that protectiveness can sometimes be an issue, especially if your kids have friends over who like to roughhouse. Also, these dogs have no idea how big they are. If they get rambunctious, they can easily step on or bowl over a small child. You need to teach them to be aware of their surroundings; you also need to teach your kid how to act around the dog. They have formidable barks that broadcast just how big they are; there are few criminals brave enough to risk entering a house with one of these monsters inside. However, both parent breeds were originally bred as fighting animals, and there may be residual violence left in their DNA. Also, be careful about resource guarding with these dogs. They may get along great with other animals — until somebody gets too close to the food bowl, a favorite toy, or even you. Avoid anything with animal by-products. Portion control is important with larger breeds, as many of them will eat until they run out of food. A brisk walk, lasting minutes, is often all they need. They love to play, and they can spend hours pulling you around the house with a rope toy. Be careful not to overdo any exercise regimen you put them on. That means avoiding activities like agility training or anything that involves running and jumping especially on hard surfaces. Swimming is great for them, though. Introduce them to new people and places, and build up their confidence. You need to pay special attention to their ears too. Other than that, their grooming needs are fairly basic. Brush their teeth every day , bathe them every few months, and trim their nails as needed. Unfortunately, the breed is prone to a variety of health issues, both large and small. Minor Conditions. Frightened or startled When they are not socialized If you think that your American Masti-Bull is displaying aggression, it is important to seek professional help from a certified trainer or behaviorist. A twice-weekly brushing with a natural bristle brush will help remove dead hairs and prevent matting. They typically shed moderately, so regular brushing will help keep the shedding under control. An occasional bath with a mild dog shampoo will help keep the coat clean and healthy. Beyond regular brushing and bathing, the American Masti-Bull requires minimal grooming. Their short, smooth coat is easy to care for, and they are not prone to excessive shedding or matting. As a result, they are an ideal breed for busy families or individuals who do not have the time or inclination to groom a high-maintenance breed. Nails should be trimmed regularly using a canine-specific nail trimmer. Overgrown nails can cause pain and difficulty walking. Ear cleaning is also important, as American Masti-Bulls are prone to ear infections. Clean the ears weekly with a cotton ball soaked in a gentle, dog-safe cleanser. Never insert anything into the ear canal itself. Teeth should be brushed regularly using a canine-specific toothpaste. American Masti-Bulls are prone to dental problems, so regular brushing will help keep the teeth and gums healthy. Regular grooming will help your American Masti-Bull stay healthy and comfortable. American Masti-Bull — Drooling Levels The American Bulldog Mastiff is known for its heavy drooling, which can be quite irritating to their face and neck. For this reason, it is important to wipe down their face and neck daily with a damp cloth. This will help to remove any build-up of saliva and prevent irritation. The American Masti-Bull is a loyal and protective breed that makes a great family pet. They are known for their gentle and loving nature, and they thrive on human interaction. They are patient with children and other pets, and they will quickly become a cherished member of the family. For this reason, it is important to socialize them early on and to provide them with plenty of positive reinforcement. They are loyal and protective of their family, and they will quickly become attached to their human companions. They are also quick to sound the alarm if they sense something amiss, which makes them an excellent watchdog. While they are not the largest of dogs, their courage and tenacity more than make up for their size. They will stand up to much larger opponents if they feel that their family is in danger. If you are looking for a guard dog that will become a loyal and loving family member, the American Masti-Bull is an excellent choice! However, like all breeds, the American Masti-Bull is susceptible to certain health conditions. Some of the most common health issues seen in American Masti-Bulls include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and cherry eye. Hip dysplasia is a condition that affects the hip joints and can cause pain and lameness. Elbow dysplasia is a similar condition that affects the elbow joints. Both conditions are believed to be genetic in nature and can be exacerbated by improper care or nutrition. Cherry eye is a condition that causes the third eyelid to become swollen and protrude from the eye. While cherry eye is not typically painful, it can cause long-term damage to the eye if left untreated. Proper care and nutrition are essential for all dogs, but they are especially important for American Masti-Bulls. This breed is prone to dental problems, so regular brushing and dental checkups are a must. However, they do have some specific nutritional requirements that need to be met in order for them to stay healthy and active. Puppies: Puppies of this breed need food that is high in protein and fat in order to support their rapid growth. The focus should also be on food that is easy to digest, since their digestive systems are still developing. This is to maintain their muscular bodies and active lifestyles. However, they also need easily digestible food since they tend to have sensitive stomachs. Senior Dogs: As senior dogs, American Masti-Bulls need food that is easy to digest and high in antioxidants to help keep their immune systems strong. They also need food that is low in calories to help them maintain a healthy weight. In addition to high-quality food, American Masti-Bulls may also benefit from a food supplement. This is especially true if they are not getting all of the nutrients they need from their food. Some good food supplements for American Masti-Bulls are omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine, and chondroitin. Table scraps should not be given to American Masti-Bulls as they can easily become obese. This is a health hazard for them since they are already prone to joint problems. Overall, American Masti-Bulls need a food that is high in protein and fat, easy to digest, and rich in antioxidants. A food supplement may also be necessary to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need. Treats should be given in moderation to avoid weight gain. American Masti-Bull — Are they friendly with other dogs? When it comes to other dogs, the American Bulldog Mastiff can be both friendly and aloof. They may get along well with some dogs but be standoffish with others. Due to their size, they may be best suited to being the only dog in the household. However, with proper socialization from an early age, they can learn to get along with other dogs. American Masti-Bulls are usually not aggressive towards other dogs, but they may become territorial if they feel threatened or if their family is threatened. Small dogs may view American Masti-Bulls as a threat, so it is important to introduce them slowly and under supervision. If you have another dog in the house, make sure to monitor their interactions carefully. This cross breed may also try to dominate other dogs, so it is important to be consistent with training and discipline. Overall, American Masti-Bulls can be friendly with most other dogs if they are properly socialized from an early age. These dogs are great with children of all ages and make wonderful family pets. If you are looking for a breed of dog that is good with kids, the American Masti-Bull is an excellent choice. Very young children or the elderly might find a large American Masti-Bull to be overwhelming. If you have small children or the elderly living in your home, it is important to supervise their interactions with this breed of dog. Otherwise, the American Masti-Bull makes an excellent companion for kids and families. Excessive barking can be a sign of underlying behavioral issues that need to be addressed. This makes them an ideal choice for many families, as they can be comfortable in both hot and cold climates. In hot weather, their coat will thin out, helping to keep them cool. In relation to hot weather, the American Masti-Bull is more tolerant to heat than most other breeds of dog. They can handle being in hot weather for longer periods of time and are less likely to overheat. Overall, the American Masti-Bull is a breed that is known for its tolerance to both hot and cold weather. This makes them an ideal choice for many families, irrespective of the climate that they live in. American Masti-Bull — Life Expectancy The American Masti-Bull is a loyal and loving companion, but like all dog breeds, they are susceptible to certain health problems. On average, they have a life expectancy of 10 years, but this can be shortened by health problems such as hip dysplasia and heart disease. By catching these problems early, you can get treatment for your Masti-Bull that can help extend their life. While this mixed breed is not yet recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC , it is growing in popularity as a family pet and working dog. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. She is a chocolate merle with an impressive pedigree! The babies are nursing with the new mom, but one puppy is clearly different from the rest. A male pup with a pistachio green hue can be seen atop the pile, with the owner zooming in to give viewers a closer look. A stock photo shows golden retriever puppies. A TikTok video of nursing golden retrievers reveals that one of them is colored green, a rare occurrence. They may sound made-up, but green golden retrievers are real, although the reason they exist is pretty gross. The green coloring is caused by biliverdin, a chemical that creates bile, according to Rover. When a dog is pregnant, the hormones can cause changes in her bodily functions. This can include her poo, which can turn green because of extra biliverdin. When puppies are born, they usually pass their "meconium"—aka their first poo—within 48 hours. Occasionally, they do this while still inside the womb. If the mom dog has high levels of biliverdin and the developing puppy passes the meconium early, this can lead to high levels of bile in the birth sac. If the puppy has light-colored fur, the pigment of the bile can stain its coat, turning the animal green. This process isn't harmful to the dog, just extremely uncommon. The phenomenon is not unique to golden retrievers and can occur with any breed if the pup has light-toned fur. Such cream Golden Retrievers are frequently being touted as being healthier, of having better temperament, of having stronger longevity and the implicit suggestion is that they therefore are more valuable than the more golden-colored Golden Retrievers bred in North America. Due to these common marketing ploys the average puppy buyer sometimes mistakes such light-colored Golden Retrievers for being a separate breed. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is only one Golden Retriever breed, governed by the breed standard endorsed by various recognized Kennel Clubs around the world. The Golden Retriever Club of America would like to emphasize to breeders and puppy buyers alike that the cream color has always been part of the full spectrum of colors found in our breed. Feathering may be lighter than rest of coat. With the exception of graying or whitening of face or body due to age, any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, should be penalized according to its extent. Allowable light shadings are not to be confused with white markings. Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity. Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair is a serious fault. The photo below furthermore illustrates the common shades of cream and gold found on this continent and all of these particular dogs are bred right here in North America. This broad range of color is not only commonly found around the world, but both light and dark shades can also occur in the very same Golden Retriever litter, with full siblings varying in color from very light cream to a rich gold. Some breeders favor different styles of Golden Retrievers and some may even have a personal preference for a lighter or a darker golden, but good breeders never focus exclusively on a specific color, since this would unnecessarily narrow the gene pool and may cause genetic predispositions towards hereditary health issues to become magnified over time. Good Golden Retrievers of differing styles should, however, all possess strong breed type. They should be readily recognized as Golden Retrievers, whether they are a rich gold or a pale cream. All Golden Retrievers across the world are descended from this original Scottish stock. You can also find very dark colored Golden Retrievers overseas, just as you can find very pale cream North American bred Goldens. It is our position that a breeding program which focuses mainly on color should be viewed with some skepticism. If claims are being made that the light creams are more valuable or healthier than darker colored Golden Retrievers, then the buyer should be aware that such statements are blatantly incorrect. We instead urge all new puppy owners to carefully review all recommended health clearances and ask the appropriate questions about longevity in the pedigree of any puppy. It is never the color of a Golden Retriever that determines its temperament and working ability or its health and potential longevity. Instead the quality of a Golden Retriever will be determined by the care the individual breeder has taken, by adhering to the standard when breeding, as well as by doing careful pedigree research and screening for soundness in mind and body. Consider contributing to The Golden Retriever Foundation. More Information. Besides English Cream Golden Retriever, this breed also goes by Platinum Retriever, rare white European retriever, exquisite platinum imported golden retriever, and also simply White Retriever or White Golden Retriever. Although there is just one golden retriever breed, there are slight differences, except for the coat color, between the English and American retriever types. However, the pale platinum coat is the trait that made English creams sought-after and popular. The English cream golden retriever and golden retriever are the same dog breed. The truth is that golden retrievers come in a variety of different shades and colors. The American golden retrievers have darker coats than their European counterparts. However, all goldens come from the same original bloodline and are all, in fact, the same breed. Originally bred in the 19th century, the golden retriever hails from Scotland where it was used as a gundog to retrieve shot waterfowl. An unknown yellow-colored retriever dog and now extinct Tweed water spaniel were used to create the first-ever litter of golden retrievers. But make no mistake, all subtypes of golden retrievers are descendants of the same Scottish bloodline. The biggest difference between the American and English variations is the coat color. American goldens can range in color from golden to deep red, while English creams have a pale platinum coat. While both variations have the same standard, English cream golden retrievers have a stockier build and a slightly larger head. They also have thicker and stronger necks, slightly wider muzzles, and a stronger jaw. Their eyes are also rounder and closer together, and the ears are at the same level as the eyes Overall, the English cream retriever has a stockier and more robust appearance when compared to its American counterpart. But although all goldens are the same breed, there are clear differences in temperaments between the American and English variations. Platinum retrievers are generally calmer and more sensible than American goldens. Think of a platinum retriever as a slightly calmer version of an American golden. Highly intelligent and eager to please, the platinum golden is easy to train and excels in obedience and agility. Amiable and affectionate, this breed likes to spend time with its people and is an amazing family dog and a great companion. Due to their trusting nature, they are poor watchdogs and are more likely to greet an intruder with a wagging tail than alert you of any suspicious activity. Despite their size, platinum golden retrievers need to live indoors with their human family so they can be included in all family activities. A fenced backyard is a must if you want to keep your goldie happy and properly exercised. Health The English cream retriever is generally a healthy dog. However, like all other purebred breeds, they are prone to certain health issues. You might have heard that platinum retrievers are healthier than their dark-coated counterparts. However, there is a study that shows cancer risk in European-bred Goldens to be lower than in North American Goldens: Interestingly, cancer risk in European-bred Goldens appears to be significantly lower. A study put the mortality figure at .Although much higher than average, the incidence is substantially lower than that found in North American Goldens. The most common health problems seen in English cream golden retrievers are: Hip And Elbow Dysplasia Hip and elbow dysplasia are hereditary conditions that are commonly seen in large breed dogs. Both of these conditions become worse with age and can be extremely painful for a dog if not treated. Progressive Retinal Atrophy Progressive retinal atrophy is an eye condition that causes a slow deterioration of the retina. In the first stages of this disease, dogs start to lose night vision and, as the disease progresses, they become completely blind. The good news is that most dogs adapt to complete or partial vision loss as long as their living space remains the same. Heart Problems English cream retrievers are affected by several heart problems, including dilated cardiomyopathy and subvalvular aortic stenosis. Dilated cardiomyopathy causes the heart to become enlarged and weak, and usually ends with congestive heart failure. On the other hand, subvalvular aortic stenosis is caused by the narrow connection between the aorta and the left ventricle and can be treated if diagnosed in time. Bloat Bloat is a life-threatening condition that affects many large breed dogs and is commonly seen in deep-chested breeds like goldens. Dogs who eat only one or two larger meals per day, exercise shortly after eating, or eat too fast are at the highest risk of developing bloat. The most common symptoms of bloat include drooling, lethargy, restlessness, and a rapid heartbeat. If you notice any of these symptoms or suspect your dog has bloat, call your vet right away. When not treated in time, this condition can be fatal. Exercise Needs While generally, they are calmer than their American cousins, the English cream retrievers still need a lot of exercise. As a working dog breed, your platinum golden retriever will need at least an hour of high-intensity exercise every day. Otherwise, your dog will become bored and restless and might decide to release all that pent-up energy by damaging your house and belongings. Besides regular exercise sessions, you should also spend at least 15 minutes every day playing with your dog. As a highly intelligent dog breed, your cream retriever will need a lot of different toys to stay entertained and mentally stimulated. Games such as fetch, tug-of-war, and flyball will keep your dog occupied and help him stay in good shape. Platinum golden retrievers are active dogs and as such are best suited for active families who like to spend time outdoors and can meet their high exercise needs. Training Highly intelligent and eager to please, the English cream retriever is very easy to train. They excel at obedience training and will learn commands quickly when properly motivated. Due to their calm nature and trainability, platinum retrievers are a great choice for novice owners. Although they are naturally friendly, start socializing your goldie from a young age, as you would any other dog. Try to expose your puppy to as many different people, places, sounds, and situations as soon as you bring him home. This way, you will help grow into a well-mannered and balanced dog. Nutrition The English cream retriever needs to eat high-quality kibble that contains all the necessary nutrients, vitamins, and minerals. Since they are the same breed, the platinum golden retriever can eat the same food as a golden retriever. You should make sure the food you are feeding contains the right balance of proteins, fats, carbs, fiber, and omega fatty acids. Since all dogs are individuals, the amount of food your dog will need will depend on his age, size, activity level, and overall health. An English cream retriever puppy will need to eat high-quality puppy food for large breeds that are formulated to support growth and development. Dog foods for large breed puppies are specially designed to prevent rapid bone growth, thus minimizing the risks of bone disorders such as elbow and hip dysplasia. Pay special note to the amount of food your cream retriever is eating, and try to offer three or more smaller meals throughout the day. This way, you will prevent overfeeding and also reduce the risk of bloat. However, platinum dogs are highly popular and there is always a higher demand for puppies with a paler coat. The English cream has a medium-length, silky, water-resistant double coat that sheds moderately all year round. This breed also goes through a heavy shed twice a year — in the spring and fall. When it comes to bathing, you can bathe your English cream once in a couple of months or more often if he gets very dirty. English Cream Golden Retrievers As Pets The English creams are excellent pets and make amazing companions to people of all ages and families with small children. Affectionate, gentle, and fun-loving, these dogs get along with everyone and like to be involved in all family activities. Please note, although they like children and are exceptionally gentle, English creams are large dogs. They can easily knock a small child in the heat of a play session accidentally. To avoid accidents of this sort, never leave young children unsupervised with your dog. Furthermore, show your children how to interact with your dog and play with him nicely. No matter how socialized and well-behaved your dog and your kids are, they should never be left unsupervised. This age always seems like the awkward not quite a puppy not quite an adult phase. What a difference two months make. Also, what a difference the lighting makes in this pic. At 10 months old he looks pretty much like the adult version of himself. Can you tell Charlie likes going to the dog beach? Yep, Goldens are mouthy dogs. Yep, Goldens can get into all kinds of mischief. Keep your eye on them. Here are just a handful from our English Cream Golden Retriever puppy archive: We pulled the puppies around the neighborhood in the wagon before they were vaccinated. We wanted them to experience some of the sights and sounds outside the house while also keeping them safe. They were about 6 weeks old in this pic. Until our puppies go to their forever homes at about 8 weeks old they spend a good amount of time in the whelping box. Our English Creams pups were about 7 weeks old in this pic. Yep, we had a litter of Christmas puppies and gathered them together for a festive photo. We used the Carlson Portable Pet Pen as an outdoor play area for our puppies so they can experience a different environment at a young age. The platinum retriever, also known as the English cream golden retriever and rare white European retriever, is a pale-coated variety of golden retriever. While some breeders advertise platinum retrievers as a rare breed, these dogs are the same breed as regular American goldens. While similar, these two types of golden retrievers are slightly different. Platinum retrievers have a pale coat, stockier built, bigger head, and rounder eyes. They are also calmer than American golden retrievers, but no less playful or fun-loving. There are three different types of golden retrievers — American, Canadian, and English golden retrievers. Although there is only one golden retriever breed, each one of these three subtypes has its own breed standard. The platinum retrievers that are bred according to the United Kennel Club breed standard are still fairly rare and can be expensive. Conclusion Platinum golden retrievers, also known as the English cream golden retrievers, are highly intelligent, affectionate, and easily trainable companion dogs. Playful and friendly, the English cream makes a great family dog and gets along with people of all ages. So, have you decided to get an English Cream Golden Retriever? Phantom Parchment These dogs are also found with different coat textures. In some cases, a Labradoodle may have a combination of these types. There are hair-coated labradoodles, fleece-coated labradoodles, and wool-coated labradoodles. On top of all that, there are also different Labradoodle sizes. There are standard-sized, medium-sized, and miniature-sized Labradoodles. A standard-sized male Labradoodle will have a height of between 22 and 24 inches. A female of the same size type will usually be between 21 and 23 inches in height. Both males and females tend to weigh between 50 and 65 pounds. Both male and female medium-sized Labradoodles weigh between 30 and 45 pounds. Be aware that no matter what size Labradoodle you have, there may be quite a bit of variation. Additionally, Labradoodle breeders and owners notice how much difference there can be in Labradoodle faces. In some cases, the faces of two Labradoodles can be strikingly different, even if they are different breeds. With all these realities, it would be impossible for the AKC to accept and treat the Labradoodle as a purebred dog. For one thing, what standards would they use for judging the dog and evaluating its quality? There are many different kinds of Labradoodle, and their value and quality depend on how they suit and please their human companions. What are Purebred Dogs? A mixed breed Labradoodle sits on a couch next to a purebred Pomeranian. There are onerous requirements that must be satisfied in order for a dog to be considered purebred and registered with the AKC. Its father also known as the sire and mother also known as the dam must both be recognized as purebred dogs by the AKC. They must also be the same breed. So, for example, a purebred Poodle must have a purebred mother dam and father sire. To be registered with the AKC, the father and mother will also need confirmed family trees also known as pedigrees. This must be documented in detail, with nothing missing. Purebred dogs are valued for how they offer predictable characteristics. For example, the purchaser of a purebred dog can be assured that the dog will have specific physical attributes and the breed-appropriate temperament. The American Kennel Club is essential for maintaining purebred dog breed lines. Owners of purebred dogs will also find the Find a Groomer section useful. This organization has branches all over the country, and these focus on a variety of different things. There are training clubs, performance clubs, national clubs for each breed, confirmation clubs, agility clubs, and obedience clubs. In fact, this program is open to every mixed-breed dog. There are numerous advantages to taking part in this program. There are obedience and agility events, as well as the AKC Rally. Your Labradoodle will have to be neutered or spayed when it becomes an adult if you want to register it in the AKC Canine Partners Program. There are surprisingly large numbers of mixed-breed dogs, including Labradoodles, waiting to be rehomed in shelters. We should limit breeding as much as possible in most circumstances. A spayed or neutered purebred dog can still be registered, though. A proud French Bulldog Mom watches over her puppies! Should You Buy a Labradoodle? After all, puppies in this designer breed can be expensive. If you have your heart set on a purebred dog with completely predictable characteristics that you can register with the AKC, get that kind of dog. Do your research and find the breed that best suits you. If, however, you want a loving family dog that is wildly popular for a reason, the Labradoodle may be the perfect pooch for you. We have had several different breeds over the years and all of them have brought us joy. After my daughter, at age 3 she's now 20 , was diagnosed with severe allergies, we were forced to find a new home for our German Shepherd. That left an empty spot in our lives. A difficult pregnancy and a premature baby put our search on hold for a while. When things settled down, we resumed our search. We were drawn again and again to the Standard Poodle. Their size was perfect. Big enough to handle whatever the kids might throw at them, but not too big to be in the house all the time. Their intelligence and trainability were also exciting for us. The Standard Poodle is one of the most versatile breeds in existence. We would love to help your family find the companion and friend that we have found with our dogs! Our Poodles are members of our family! They are interacted with daily from the moment of birth. This results in very well socialized puppies that adjust to their new homes quickly and confidently. Take some time to browse the site and feel free to contact us with any questions that you may have. We look forward to making your family part of the Hometown Poodles family! More Information. With this profound movement of the love of all things Labra doodle, the purity and purpose of what Labradoodles were originally bred for has become convoluted with many types of doodles. The Labradoodle breed itself is be coming a confusing mixture of levels of breeds, types of infusions into the blood lines, etc. Australian Labradoodles are produced when multiple generations of the original Australian bloodlines, Rutland Manor and Teagan Park are bred together. These two kennels began breeding these dogs to create a hypo-allergenic, low to non-shedding dog. These dogs are bred to be highly trainable dog for the purpose of being taught to be guide dogs or therapy dogs for people with allergies. It was a pleasure working with you guys through the process. From the initial meeting to the weekly picture updates to picking out and taking home our puppy. She is a people magnet. Everyone wants to see her and pet her because she is so gorgeous! And fluffy! We lover her curly coat! She is extremely smart…when she wants something and is definitely still in the hyper puppy stage! Her forbidden love is socks and she will do just about anything for a piece of cheese. The most important thing is that we love her so much. She brings so much joy to our family! We can love all over her…pet her…kiss her…and she wags her tail and licks us. She is a good girl! Still a hyper puppy that tries to get into everything, but a really good girl! My dog Pepper is a wonderful addition to my family! Beautiful dogs! They are beautiful and healthy. Our first one is almost 5 years old and we have a 2 month old. Lindy breeds them in a very clean home. She is extremely loving to these newborns and is open to all of our questions. She even follows up to see how they are doing. I would not buy from anyone else. Our 2 labradoodles get plenty of compliments. We have added 2 beautiful members to our family. I waited almost a year for mine and he has been life changing. They are truly amazing, healthy, loyal, and smart dogs! I have trained him and he is now a service dog and has been the greatest companion to me as well. Lindy always responded and kept me in the loop during the entire process. Before I met her I had a nightmare situation with a breeder that was a scam so was very skeptical but she made me feel at ease about everything. Thank you for everything Lindy! Nathan Kirton I ended up finding a puppy from someone else that fit my timeline better. The communication I had with her Lindy was amazing. She was super helpful, and gave me so much information about what I could expect. Thanks for being super helpful Lindy! We waited over a year and it was so worth it! Lindy was instrumental in our family getting the dog of our dreams. She was extremely helpful in asking and answering questions to ensure we got a right match for our family. She took into consideration all of my preferential factors such as the gender, coat color, personality, etc. The cherry on top was upon pick up at 8 weeks Teddy was healthy, socialized, potty trained, and vaccinated. Lindy pours love onto these dogs and puppies and treats her clients with tremendous respect. The puppies are happy and safely kept in an immaculate environment until sent home and I love that each family is celebrated with a photo to commemorate the occasion. Definitely worth the WAIT! Chuck Hahn Best dog ever!!! Worth the wait. He came home perfect! Testimonials Happy Faces Your happiness is our happiness, your success, our success. We take great pride in each and every home we complete with our dogs. We did tons of research. We wanted a dog that did not shed, was hypoallergenic, and had a good temperament. Those dogs are hard to find! We finally came across a very special Australian Labradoodle. We found our Rosie through my best friend who knew the owner of Australian Labradoodles of Texas. Her temperment is what we were really drawn to. She is so calm, obedient, and really wants to please you. She rings a bell when she needs to go outside and walks right next to you on her leash! We feel so lucky that we get to call her ours! To say that Miles has changed our lives for the better would be an extreme understatement! From the moment we set our eyes on him in your videos, we knew he was special, and he has shown us that a million times over. He is a sweet and affectionate dog who loves his family fiercely, acting protective when he needs to, yet demonstrates such a docile and gentle temperament to other people, especially small children who love to pet and squeeze his fluffiness. I had no intention of adding another dog to the mix! After several weeks, I finally pulled the trigger and we brought him home! Charley Brown was the perfect addition to our family and I would recommend these pups to anyone looking for a good family dog. All of our puppies come with Socialization.

It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict.

So, how do we spot this? Unfortunately, this condition can lead to arthritis in the future — so, we suggest screening your Labrador for this. It has an above average protein content than the minimum recommended for your dog, coming in at 31 percent protein at dry weight. The protein it has comes mostly from chicken by-product meal which is considered somewhat low quality and consists of whatever is left after chickens are slaughtered. However, it does NOT — as you might read elsewhere — consist of anything from feet to beaks. According to dogfoodadvisor. After chicken by-product meal, the second ingredient in this food is brewers rice. The fourth ingredient is corn gluten meal which is a residue left over once most of the useful, starchy carbohydrates have been washed out of it. The third to 5th ingredients are wholesome whole grains that provide high energy from complex carbohydrates that are easy to digest. These are far better than corn and most other sources of carbs found in cheaper foods that are hard for a puppy to get any nutrition from. We recommend feeding a Labrador puppy dry kibble for the first months before changing to an adult food type. But to remain healthy, owners should know what to feed them. Dog owners should feed a Labrador puppy dry food kibble , wet food, or fresh human food, depending on their budget and lifestyle. There are many options for food for dogs, and it can become challenging to determine which one is the best option for the dog. We have found the best options and listed them below. They help us with our daily tasks, are always there when we need them, and bring great joy to our lives. But, it is essential to ensure that our dog gets the best nutrition possible. They have a lot of energy and need to be fed accordingly. This includes the number of calories, food type, and the number of meals per day. We will explain all of these factors to help understand what to feed these precious animals. A Labrador puppy needs high-quality protein in their diet, so they should not be fed just any type of food. This is why we recommend three food options: dry food or kibble, fresh food or human food, or wet food. We prefer using dry food or kibble in most cases, but it is beneficial to start with wet food for young puppies and transition to dry food after a few weeks. Feeding a puppy human food is possible, but it can be more expensive and requires extra work to stick to a cleaner diet at this age. We have found it to be a healthier and more convenient option for our pets. It is also a good alternative to wet food which can be difficult to store and prepare. The benefits of dry dog food are that it offers the pup a balanced diet that doesn't need refrigeration. It also offers convenience because we can buy it in bulk and store it in the pantry or freezer until needed. Dry dog food is also less expensive than wet food, which is another benefit for pet owners. Fresh Food Human Food Feeding a Labrador puppy a diet of fresh, real human food is one of the best things to do for their health and well-being. It will not only make them happy and content, but it will also keep them healthy. This eliminates the guessing game; they are only fed real, natural foods with no unknown ingredients. However, it will become expensive and require regular cooking and preparation. Wet Food Wet food is recommended for Labrador puppies when they are first born and for the first weeks while they grow. It can be either raw or cooked. Wet food is a good source of water and minerals, which are important in the early days of their life to help them grow strong bones and teeth. It should be given to a puppy as soon as it comes out of its mother's womb, but it must not be given before it starts eating solid foods because it will cause diarrhea. Once they get more mature, moving to kibbles is best. It is known for its low level of grain and carbohydrate content and high protein content. Once they reach the week mark, there are better options to help the puppy continue to develop and grow. This food also helps with digestion and weight management. It also promotes proper bone growth with antioxidants and necessary nutrients like vitamin E. The kibble is also shaped strategically to help puppies who chew fast while helping with jaw growth. Overall, this is the best food option for a Labrador puppy. It is designed for all life stages, from puppies to seniors, and we love the benefits it provides to younger labs. It also contains omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, which are important for healthy skin and the dog's coat. They are large, strong, intelligent dogs that need a lot of attention, exercise, and food. These dogs can be picky eaters and usually need a lot of calories because of their size. This is especially true for puppies so they can grow properly and remain healthy due to their increased risk of health issues. Food Type Labrador puppies' most popular dog foods are kibbles and canned wet food. Kibbles are the best option for a puppy because they are easy to chew and digest. Canned food is a good option for pups who have difficulty chewing or digesting dry food and would benefit from a little moisture in their diet. The food type also depends on the owner. Dry food or kibbles are faster to prepare, while serving human food to a lab puppy requires extensive prep time. Nutritional Value When it comes to nutritional value, we want dog food that has high-quality protein and carbohydrates. This will help the puppy grow strong and healthy. This is why we need to take into account the nutritional value, quality of ingredients, and taste. It should be made with all-natural ingredients that are sourced from human-grade materials such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A brand should have all the essential nutrients for a pup but still, be low in toxic elements and preservatives too. Dietary Restrictions Lastly, consider the dietary restrictions of the Labrador puppy before choosing a dog food option. This includes any allergies or health concerns for the dog and shopping for something that suits them best. For example, lab puppies must reach a certain carbohydrate and protein number daily. Labradors are also known to have allergies, especially young ones, so planning around this is crucial. A puppy should be fed at least three times a day, with a meal size that is appropriate for its body weight. They should also be given small daily snacks to keep them satisfied and happy, including treats to help with training. We feed our puppies the best that we can. We want to give them all the nutrients and vitamins they need. We also want to make sure that they are getting a balanced diet. The most important thing when feeding a Labrador puppy is that they get enough calories from their food every day. In the first weeks, the puppy should eat four smaller daily meals. Once the lab reaches three months, this can be changed to three meals per day. And after months, we recommend two meals per day. The key is not to change the calories much when the meals change but to simply modify the size of each meal to fit the total daily food amount. Feeding a Labrador puppy is not rocket science, but there are some things everybody should know about what to feed them and when to feed them. We have covered this basis, but changes need to be made as they age. This leads to a common question about changing food to fit the needs of a grown adult Labrador. The dog's age will determine how quickly they grow and how much energy they need. Lab puppies can stick with kibbles for up to 12 months. Active, eager to please and easy to train — with the waggiest of tails and smiliest of doggy faces — when it comes to being a good-natured family pet, Labrador Retrievers tick all the boxes. How trendy is your dog? The breed has certainly come a long way from its hard-working Canadian roots — in 16th century Newfoundland, the ancestors of the Labrador Retrievers we know and love today were used to help fishermen retrieve nets and lost lines and pull carts loaded with fish. Labs will try their hardest to beg, steal or borrow just about any kind of food , even if it will do them absolutely no good at all. Sensitive puppy food is suitable for feeding Labrador puppies from 6 weeks to 12 months old. Shop sensitive puppy food. A recent scientific study has shown that a gene alteration specifically found in Labs indicates greater food-motivated behaviour than in other breeds. Researchers discovered that this variation occurs more frequently in Labradors chosen as assistance dogs and might explain why these canines seem more trainable with food rewards. When searching for the best diet for Labradors, look for recipes that are made from premium ingredients such as lamb , turkey and salmon to ensure excellent quality and superior taste. When introducing a new food to your dog, you should do it gradually to avoid upsetting their digestion. Mix in the new food with the old over a period of 7 to 10 days until the new food completely replaces the old diet. How often should you feed a Labrador Retriever and how much? Puppies, with their small stomachs need three or four small meals a day, while adult dogs generally have two meals a day. Sometimes, elderly dogs benefit from three or four smaller meals. If you feed treats for training or when out on walks, this should also be taken into account. Remember that treats should be just that — something special, fed occasionally, in small amounts. Feeding frenzy? While some dogs like to savour every mouthful of their food, you might find that when feeding your Labrador puppy or adult dog, that they scoff down their dinner in seconds, which is really not good for them. Eating food too fast can cause digestive upsets, some of which can be very serious, requiring immediate veterinary attention. By switching the food you are feeding them to something more nutritionally beneficial you may be able to change your Lab's eating behaviour and allow them to slow down. What foods are dangerous to Labrador Retrievers? Here are some of the main foods that are dangerous for dogs and should be avoided in a Labrador diet. If you suspect your Lab has eaten any of the following, consult your vet immediately. Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death. Chocolate, coffee, tea Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system. Fat trimmings Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract. Grapes and raisins Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. Gravy If made from meat juices, it can contain high levels of fat, which can cause pancreatitis. Large amounts of liver Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones. Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle. Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhoea. Mouldy or spoiled food Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhoea and can also affect other organs. Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death. Onions and garlic raw, cooked, or powder Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anaemia. Garlic is less toxic than onions. Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock. Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin a B vitamin. This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain salmonella. Raw fish Can result in a thiamine a B vitamin deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly. Excessive salt If eaten in large quantities, it may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus. Table scraps in large amounts Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced and if excessively fed can lead to obesity. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed. Xylitol This artificial sweetener sneaks its way into all sorts of foods — from peanut butter to jellies and jams and is highly toxic to canines. After a dog consumes a significant amount of xylitol, there is a massive release of insulin from the pancreas. This, in turn, results in a dangerously low blood sugar level and symptoms such as weakness, trembling, seizures, collapse, and even death. Is a Labrador Retriever the right breed for you? Best Puppy Food for Labs The best Labrador puppy food provides a diet that is nutritious, healthy, and tasty. So, what is the best puppy food for your Lab? Puppy kibble or dried food is the most popular option. Kibble is complete and can give a perfectly balanced diet. Puppy kibble and tinned dog meat combined is another common choice among puppy parents. Feeding your Labrador puppy on home cooked food or on a totally raw diet is also possible. Raw puppy food is growing in popularity, and there are pros and cons to raw feeding your puppy. People often feel very strongly that one way of feeding is better than another, and you can always find evidence to support your view. Dog breeders, veterinarians and even nutritionists have their own strong views. The dire consequences they list for not listening to them can have puppy owners very worried. The truth is that there is no good quality evidence showing that kibble is better for the long term health of your dog, or that raw feeding is better. This specialised care is usually left to trained breeders or veterinarians, who are knowledgeable in caring for pups with no mother to nurse from. If you have recently brought a Labrador puppy into your family, they are most likely older than 8 weeks, and so have started to eat solid foods. You can do this by mixing some dry food with specially formulated puppy milk to form a soft mixture. You can feed your puppy this mixture three to four times a day. Over time, you can reduce the amount of milk you include in this mixture, until they are at the point where they are happily eating dry foods. Read on to learn how much you should feed a Labrador puppy as they get older. In their four months living with you, and once they are weaned off milk, Labradors are likely to reach almost half their adult weight. They will reach their full adult weight by the time they are 6 to 7 months old. With this rapid growth can come some risks. Labradors can be susceptible to bone growth disorders, like hip dysplasia and joint abnormalities that can start in puppyhood. Once your Lab puppy hits 6 months, their growth begins to slow down. Once puppyhood is over, you can move to feeding your lab twice a day instead of 3 or 4 times. Labs are still very active in their adolescent years, and so should be fed with this in mind. The transition from puppy food to adult food should happen at around 15 months. This is because, being a breed who grows very quickly, you want to ensure that you are feeding them according to their large breed needs. You need to take special care when considering what you should feed your Labrador puppy, as they require different nutrients compared to their adult counterparts. It is also dangerous for a puppy to overeat. Labradors are large breeds, which means they need plenty of nutrients and calories as they grow to ensure they go from being active puppies to healthy adult dogs. Labrador puppies need to eat food that is high in proteins and fats. Carbohydrates are also essential for supporting your active pup. Aside from nutritionally complete dry puppy food, Labrador puppies can benefit from the extra protein that raw meat can provide them with, such as lean beef, turkey, chicken, or fish. The amount of food you give your Labrador is determined by their weight, energy levels, and age. For most adult Labradors, around 1, to 2, calories per day from high quality food sources is ideal. Female Labradors, who tend to be around 5 to 10 kilos lighter than males, may need less food, as will less active dogs. Dogs who need less food, whether they are less active or simply older, will usually still need around 1, to 1, calories per day. You may want to alter the amount of food you are feeding your Labrador based on how calorically dense their food is. Adult Labradors should be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Their daily allotment of food should be split evenly between these two meals. For most dogs, it is recommended that you exercise your dog before meal times to assist with potty training. However, some dogs may benefit from exercise after eating: especially high energy Labs with a lot of energy to burn off. You should also try to give your Labrador a high quality food that is specially designed for large breeds, especially if they are very active. For example, less active senior dogs will need to eat less food as they will not be burning calories as quickly as a lively little puppy will. Senior dogs may benefit from a higher fibre and lower calorie diet. Your dog may also develop chronic or short term medical conditions that require specially formulated food. For example, Labradors can be particularly susceptible to obesity. As a breed, they tend to be one of the most commonly obese dogs in Australia. This is due to several factors, including a genetic predisposition to unhealthy weight gain and a famously large appetite. However, plenty of Labs suffering from obesity are simply overfed and not getting enough exercise. Choosing a low carb diet is crucial to preventing obesity in your Labrador. If you are unsure about what you should feed your Labrador, you should always consult your vet. They will be able to determine if your dog is suffering from any chronic health issues, and they will be able to create a nutritional plan to help keep your dog healthy and happy for many years to come. Wet food for Labradors is often high in protein and fat, and is better at keeping your dog hydrated than other food sources. Chewing on dry food can be especially good for teething Labrador puppies. A raw diet can be a good option for your Labrador as you have more control over the kinds of food and amount of nutrients your pup is consuming. For this reason, raw diets require a lot more work on your part as an owner. Whatever you decide to feed your Labrador, all dogs need a similar ratio of nutrients in their diets. Different dog breeds will need different kinds of nutrient support as they go through the various stages of their life. It can also be easy to overestimate the amount of food your Labrador needs to stay fit and healthy — especially if they are skilled at begging! You need to make sure that your dog is eating the right amount of food for their breed, their size, and activity level. You should also avoid foods that, while delicious for humans, can be harmful or toxic for dogs. Foods like onions, nuts, alcohol, cooked bones, and artificial sweeteners are commonly included in dinners meant for humans, but can cause serious health issues for your Labrador. No matter how old your Lab is, it is important to keep to a consistent feeding schedule. A feeding schedule can help you keep track of any changes in behaviour around food that might signal illness or physiological stress.
