Working on control As Bubba matures, we need to work on more control. Bubba must learn to control herself in different situations. We continue to work on these control situations, but we are now adding more opportunities to exhibit control. This is challenging for a puppy her age, she wants to bolt out of the crate, but she must exhibit control and wait for the release command. Obedience training your week-old puppy We continue to work on obedience training using a chain collar and heeling stick. Bubba is learning to walk at our side, but it is far from perfect. She is also sitting on command, with occasional reminders from the heeling stick. I continue to work on strengthening her SIT. I can currently walk away from Bubba steps, and she will remain seated, but she makes lots of mistakes. I move my body while I stand a couple feet from her, and command SIT at the same time. It is very hard for puppies to understand that they must remain seated and still when someone else is moving. But it will all come. It just takes a lot of repetition and enforcement. I will slowly extend the distance between Bubba and myself. A stronger SIT will also take some maturity. As Bubba gets older the obedience will get easier for her to understand and to complete the necessary commands. But I will also make the training more difficult by adding distractions. It is not easy, and I did resort to treat training as I bid time to teach with the electronic collar. The treat training has helped a lot but has also resulted in some bad behaviors. Bubba is now jumping on me more because she anticipates a treat from my pocket. I have been firm and consistent in correcting the jumping, but it is most definitely a result of the treat training. In addition, Bubba thinks she should get a treat for doing things she has been doing for weeks without a treat. I will continue with the treats for the HERE command for the next few weeks, and then I will start weaning her off them. Introducing your Labrador puppy to hunting elements Bubba is almost done her introduction to hunting elements except for gunfire. Gunfire must be done slowly, with the noise getting incrementally closer to Bubba over time. We have already started this introduction, but it will be several months or more before we move the gunfire right next to her. Introducing your puppy decoys in water Swimming is something Bubba loves to do, so this week we added water marks with decoys in the water. We give her the time to check out the decoys with no correction and when she finally picks up the bumper, we praise her with a Good Dog. A few marks through decoys will be enough to teach Bubba that the decoys are not the thing she should be retrieving. I will continue this training for Bubba for the next couple weeks and then will stop since she will be teething, and I do not want to cause her any pain while doing this training. Increased distance for assistant marks Assistant marks are vital for teaching Bubba to mark watch where the bird fell so she can run to the correct area. We make sure she gets marks every day, but we limit the number of marks she gets to three. The reason we do this is because with young pups you want to build their retrieving desire. Desire is built not by giving your puppy unlimited retrieves. It is built by limiting the number of retrieves the puppy gets at any one time. My husband likes to compare it to a Thanksgiving dinner. If you sit down and eat a huge plate full of food, you are not going to be hungry a few hours later. But if you only get a little piece of turkey for your meal and then are told that is all there is, you will be very hungry the next time you are offered food. If you have a dog struggling with desire, you want to limit the retrieves. Sometimes to only one per day, or one every other day. Bubba is not struggling with desire at all, so we stick to three retrieves per day. Final thoughts on training for your week-old Labrador puppy Your puppy is probably advancing well in training at this point. You should see some marked improvement in her obedience and behavior. Set some reasonable boundaries and enforce them. Work on obedience on a regular basis, even if only for 5 minutes a day. If you do, you will see your dog grow in leaps and bounds. He walks great on a loose chain, and he sits in this position until release by another command. He does well in the down command but is still a bit stubborn. I also have been training him to stay in a particular spot until released and he is doing very well with that. Overall is making very good progress. It's hard to remember life before we had her. She adjusted very nicely to her new home. She and our cat were getting along and the cat was very interested in her, dare I say he really enjoyed her. Two weeks after we got Rylee the cat took ill and had to be put down. Our family was incredibly sad, and I think Rylee understood that something bad happened. Having Rylee in our lives and home cushioned the blow for all of us and she helped us heal. As they say, timing is everything and she is just what we needed. We've had Rylee for two months now, and in that time she has learned so much. Without jinxing myself, I'll say that she house trained within a few weeks. Sure, she thought the rug was a great place to pee and poop when she first got here, but she quickly learned that outside was even better. Alyssa trained her to use the poochie bells in just a few days and now she rings them when she has to go out. We even put a second set of bells in our family room and she learned to use them if we are all sitting in there. She graduated from Puppy Kindergarten this week and begins basic training next week. She has learned to sit, down, down stay, high five, shake hands, spin, roll over, fetch, come, and is working off leash to heel, stay, and come when called. She learns so fast and is really fun to train and play with. I've been taking here with me everywhere and she melts hearts wherever she goes. She loves the car, kids, adults, other dogs, even the vet and groomer. People can't get enough of her! We are working with her to not jump up on people when someone comes to pet her. The obvious joy and love the dog expresses for our kids every time they come home is so beautiful to watch. Today Besa is 14 and we still call her puppy. As so many dogs have, she has truly enjoyed the pandemic and spends every day sleeping in a bed in the office both my wife and I work from. In general, Besa is still in excellent health but is not immune from aging. She has some bladder leakage when she sleeps and has had a heart murmur for many years. We feel so incredibly blessed to have her as part of our lives and will treasure every day we get to spend with her. I'll add yet another thank you to the mountain of them you have received. His biggest issues are: digging in the yard and finding and tearing apart socks he seems to have a foot fetish. He also has trouble seeing through that furry face, but I bought some thinning scissors and this is now improved. He has the softest most luxurious coat imaginable. Pearl has been such a blessing and in some ways, she is like my guardian angel. I feel so fortunate in that Pearl from an incredibly early age began alerting me and it was I that took a while to catch on what she was doing. Long before Pearl ever started her official training, and basically from the day I brought her home, I would have her lay on my chest with her nose near my mouth. She would nap that way, and we would cuddle that way. So, if I was wearing an article of clothing when I had a bloodsugar issue, I would use that article as my scenting tool. She learned skills and behaviors associated with service dog duties and along with the trainer, we came up with ways to add the skills that Pearl seemed to intuitively have to new skills and put it all together. I feel like none of this would not be if I would have not had Pearl and you come into my life. Pearl is more than just a service dog, more than a companion animal…. Oh Rochelle, I wish you could see her. She is not only beautiful, she has a calm sweetness to her that just makes you melt. I took her with me to California a couple of weeks ago. When I got there, my dad was laying down in bed. After we came in and gave a hug to mom, I took her off leash and she went immediately back to their bedroom where dad was laying. She looked at me and I nodded and she jumped right in bed with him and quickly laid down next to him with her head on his chest. My mom said it was the first time that dad smiled and laughed for days. For the rest of the week that we were there, Pearl rotated from dad to I, checking in with both of us often. We are moving forward with therapy training. The evaluation for Ozzie will be about a week later. I hope we can make it through the first time. We are working hard. But there is also play in the agility class, which he really seems to enjoy. Loves the jumps but is not crazy about the tunnel or chute. He also sees his doggie friends on a regular basis.
