Chopped carrots or celery make great little healthy treats. Your vet can help you develop a care routine. Boxadors love to eat and will rapidly gain weight if they are allowed to free feed. Pick a high quality dog food and stick to a feeding schedule; two feedings per day could be ideal to keep this pooch happy. They also need an exercise schedule. A 30 minute hike, walk, or game of fetch, plus an hour of active running around a yard will help burn off pent up energy. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. Keeping them clean and dry is the best way to avoid doctor visits. If your dog develops a pungent aroma or is scratching their ears excessively, they may have an ear infection and will require a vet exam. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth a minimum of three times a week. Clean your dogs eyes as you would your own. You can use a cloth or your fingers to wipe away discharge or debris that collects in the corners. Boxador Feeding An ideal Boxador diet should be formulated for an active, medium- to large-sized breed. Limit their amount of treats, as well. The main colors of Boxadors are; black, brown, brindle, and white. Rarely solid, their coats typically have a blend of two or more colors. Luckily, their coats are very easy to groom. A good brushing per week will probably do. They may self groom and are considered a pretty clean dog. Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any tail pulling or biting on the part of either party. No dog should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Learn more about this pup by reading about their parent breeds, the Boxer and Labrador Retriever. Boxador Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed specific rescue for Boxadors because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Boxer or Labrador Retriever breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. There is a lot of talk about black Boxers dogs; some potential puppy buyers will actively seek out this colored puppy, but their searching is in vain. It may be hard to believe it when you see photos, but black boxers do not exist — the color gene responsible for black coat color does not exist within the breed. Brindle is a pattern of color, it is a striping effect. With most brindle Boxers, the dark stripes are clearly over a fawn background. However, with Boxer dogs that appear to have a black coat, this is due to super heavy reserve brindling. In fact, it can be so dark and so thick, that you cannot see any fawn beneath it. This gives the dog a very dark coat that does indeed appear to be black. Here, we'll go into the facts a bit more to talk about why black cannot exist with the breed and some myths are swirl about regarding this perceived coat color. Why Colors are Misinterpreted It is very easy to see a dog and immediately assume that he is a certain color, based on what your eyes are telling you. However, with some breeds, the Boxer included, you must take a second look. It is sometimes only when you realize how brindle can cause an effect of sorts, that makes a first impression of black, that it starts to make sense. In addition, some Boxers are given the term of black; however, in many cases, this is a shortened term that comes from longer 'black brindle'. The base color of all purebred Boxers is fawn. Brindles are actually fawn with a brindle marking. Those markings are made of a pattern for fur consisting of black striping which covers the fawn… Sometimes just a bit lightly brindled and sometimes a lot a heavily brindled dog. A black Boxer with white flash? Your eyes are playing tricks on you. This pup is super dark reverse brindle with white markings. Cassandra, 5 months old Photo couresty of Christopher Many wonder if perhaps there were black Boxers that were mostly bred out of the lines and that perhaps now and again a dog with a black coat shows up somewhere. However, if we look to the record keeping of the past century, we can see that this is not the case. In this year time period, a black Boxer appeared once, however there is a catch to this. In the Germany, in the late 's a Boxer was paired with a mixed dog that was part Bulldog and part Schnauzer. The resulting litter had puppies that had black coats. Since another breed was introduced into the bloodline, they were not purebreds. These dogs were not used for any further breeding and therefore did not have any influence on genetics going forward. Once in a while there will be a breeder that claims to have black Boxers and will point to this one incident long ago as evidence that black does indeed run in the bloodline. However, since those mixed dogs with black coats were never used for any sort of develop program this simply does not hold true. Another element that shows that this coloring does not exist in the Boxer line is the rule that the Munich Boxer Club created in .This group had stringent control over breeding and development of Boxers in Germany and set the guidelines for the standard, conformation and all elements regarding appearance including coloring. This group did not wish for any experimenting to be done that would introduce the color black and for this reason they made a clear rule that black Boxers would not be accepted. Some make the argument that programs may have ignored this ruling and still attempted to breed black Boxers. However it would have not been in their best interest to do so and additionally, any resulting dogs would have not been part of the Munich Boxer Club since they couldn't have been registered there. This means that any such hypothetical dogs could not have genetically been included in the Boxer's bloodline since they would have been barred from any programs that were developing and perfecting the breed. So, now that we know: This color does not exist in the line The only record of any black Boxer in the last century was a mixed dog and not a purebred Guidelines and strict rules of of the club in Munich that was the foundation of today's Boxers clearly excluded black Boxers. And it is also fair to say: The chance of there being some odd, rare gene mutation that brings black into the coat is extraordinarily rare; mathematically the odds are so low that this can be ruled out Black Boxer puppies cannot be born due to a hidden gene; this is because black is dominant over all other colors. It cannot be recessive, it always comes out over others Why are some people still adamant that this coloring exists? Diesel, at 2 years old Photo courtesy of Brittany Calvert This leads us to the conclusion of only two possibilities in this regard: A 'true' black Boxer simply cannot be a purebred. It is assumed that in this case, it would be done to sell the pups at a higher cost. Some elements to ponder.Their registration papers do not have that color code as an option. Therefore, even if someone verbally dubs a Boxer to have a black coat, the dog - if registered with a recognized club - would officially be another color; and that would most likely be brindle. Since the pup would be handed over to new owners with papers stating he was not black, how can they simultaneously claim to have black Boxer dogs? And this of course, is very unethical. In Summary Every being whether it is a mammal, like a dog, human, etc. These genes determine everything about the being, from skin color to the number legs to where the eyes are.Genes control coat color in dogs, too. In order for a dog to be black, that breed of dog must contain the gene for having a black coat. Boxer dogs do not have that gene. So, there cannot be any black Boxer dogs. It is genetically impossible. A Boxer that is black, or true black with brown points, for example, MUST be a mixed breed or a heavily brindled dog. What is a Boxer? You will recognize the Boxer by its tough, muscled exterior, wrinkled expression, and high energy antics. But, did you know that Boxers are sweet-tempered family dogs? They are protective and loyal and love to follow their owners everywhere. This affection pup will greet you with excited, slobbery kisses! Boxers are a medium to large purebred dog that comes from Germany. Boxers have smooth, short coats that are typically fawn, brindle, or white. Their faces often have a black mask with a few white markings. Boxers are energetic and need daily exercise, including fetch, games, and long walks. Boxer puppies take a few years to fully mature, so their puppy energy is endless for around three years. Remember to limit treats with Boxers and Boxer mixes, as this can cause obesity. Boxers are prone to health issues, including hip dysplasia, but oftentimes these health concerns are lessened with a crossbreed dog. Feeding your Boxer high-quality dog food, along with daily exercise, can help your pup reach a lifespan of years. Your Boxer mix will inherit many of the Boxer traits in addition to the other parent dog breed. The tri-mix is a result of crossing the Akita and the Welsh Corgi, then mixing it with the German Shepherd. With three parents, the outcome of the dog depends on the most outstanding genes. On this note, if you have the German Shepherd as half the parent and the other two as quarters, the dog can have unique features from one of the less dominant parents. Thankfully, the history of its parents is clear and can give us an overview of how the mix looks, behaves, and generally exists. Captain Max created it in the 19th century; he wanted a dog that could suit military and police work. This saw him make a dog that matched the looks, intelligence, and versatility he was looking for. During this time, the dog was used to deliver food and other necessities to German soldiers in the land mines and tanks. After the war, movies featuring German Shepherds brought them back into favor, and people started to keep them. American audiences got attracted to the dog, which saw a growth in numbers in the United States. The German Shepherd was recognized by the American Kennel Club in , becoming one of the oldest dogs to earn recognition. Akita History The Akita is a large-sized dog with its origin in the northern mountainous regions of Japan. The dog comes in two varieties, the Japanese strain, the Akita Inu, and the American strain, known as Akita. The Japanese Akita has a narrow palette of colors, while the American Akita comes in all dog colors. The Akita has a coat similar to that of the Siberian Husky, and this is why they are often confused as one. The Akita is one of the oldest native dogs in Japan. Its ancestors, the Matagi, included the wild boar, Sika deer, and the Asian black bear. This dog was used to track large game until hunters arrived to kill. Bernard, Great Danes, and Tosa Inu. This breeding created a fighting dog as the industry was taking off. The American Akita is a descendant of the Japanese Akita, which was not desired due to the markings it came with. Its popularity grew in America, attracting recognition by the American Kennel Club in .Today, the Akita is a sought-after dog not only for its cuddly body but also for its natural protective instincts. It is one of the two varieties of Corgi, descendants of the northern spitz-type dogs like the Siberian Husky. The Corgi is one of the most miniature dogs in the herding group. Since that time, Corgis have been associated with British royalty, but their numbers seem to decline due to popularity and demand. They were trained to herd sheep, horses, ducks, geese, and cattle, making it one of the oldest herding breeds. It has a long tail that is set high and has a well-muscled stature. Its muscular body brings out the confidence of the dog together with its alert look. The dog has upright ears and curious eyes, which can be attributed to the hunting and herding histories of the parents. Depending on the dominant genes, it will look more like one of the parents or as a mix of all three. Weight and Height The mix is an average of most medium and large dogs with smaller puppies in the litter growing to be more medium-sized than large sides. A German Shepherd can weigh between 75 and 95 lbs, an Akita can weigh between 70 and lbs, and a Corgi can weigh between 20 and 30 lbs. The mix, therefore, can weigh between 50 to lbs. A German Shepherd can grow as tall as 22 to 26 inches, an Akita can be as tall as 26 to 28 inches, and a Corgi can be as high s 10 to 12 inches. The mix, therefore, can grow as tall as 15 inches or thereabout. Coat Type and Color This tri-mix dog will come with a double coat and a soft, dense undercoat. The outer coat will be straight, loose, or standing away from the body. It has a ruffle around the neck, loose around the ears, and the coat is shorter on the legs. When it comes to color, the dog can come in variations of black, red, and brown with some white markings. It has attractive markings and lighter colors on the legs. German Shepherd Akita Corgi Mix Personality The mix has quite the personality; you can expect this from its variable genes. It has a working-dog history, so you can expect excellent hunting skills, alertness, curiosity, and protectiveness. The dog is quite confident, but it does not like being alone. It should not suffer too much from separation anxiety, but it always appreciates some company. Puppies need extra attention and interaction to thrive; therefore, they are suitable for people who can set aside time. The mix is sweet and cuddly but can be highly sensitive and territorial. It likes pleasing its human family and will always want to protect you from any kind of harm. Naturally, the dog is protective and can be a little aggressive towards strangers and new pets. With the parents having a working history, the mix can be unruly and aggressive if not trained. It is powerful and independent, and intimidating. It is therefore essential to teach them early and socialize them so they can relate well with people and other pets. Generally, the dog loves company and enjoys spending time with its human family. It is a great companion and will feed you as much love as you feet it. It is an action junkie, so it will enjoy exploring with you and engaging in competitive and challenging events. It is good with kids but needs early socialization to play with them safely. Due to its medium to large size, the mix is not apartment friendly unless you have a designated green area that allows dogs. Its territory-protecting nature makes it a great watch or guard dog. It will gladly give warning of intruders or any strange occurrence. It will protect your family while maintaining its loyal and affectionate self. How to Take Care of the German Shepherd Akita Corgi Mix This tri-mix dog is not challenging to care for, but there is a bare minimum that you must accord it to keep it happy and healthy. The dog needs regular exercise, a nutritious diet, consistent grooming, and early training. Exercise Needs The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix is a high-energy and highly active dog that thrives on working hard and exercising. It enjoys the outdoors and will be happy to run around the park, hike, or stroll around the neighborhood. If you have obstacle courses and sports in your area, you can enroll your dog in some to stimulate it physically. The dog needs at least an hour of exercise every day and physically-engaging activities a few times a week. Nutrition Needs Since the dog is a high-energy dog, it needs food that can cater to its energy needs and still meet its other nutritional requirements. It will require high fat and protein food to support its muscular body while providing enough energy to stay active. The food you choose for your dog needs glucosamine and chondroitin to support bone and joint health. For treats, it is best to stay away from store-bought treats as they might have hidden sugars. Stick to raw vegetable treats to manage a healthy weight. It seems challenging to maintain, but it is not, as long you brush it regularly. Brushing your mix for approximately 10 minutes daily is advisable to keep the coat in the best condition. On this note, you will need a powerful vacuum to remove the hair. And, the dog might shed its undercoat twice a year, making the shedding even more pronounced. It is therefore not hypoallergenic and might not be the best fit for people that suffer from pet allergies. The mix can do with one bath a month, but you can do more baths if needed. Check the ears for wax weekly and clean. Brush its teeth at least three times a week and check for any injuries from time to time. Training You might need help training this dog, as it can be challenging to guide during training. The tri-mix is intelligence, which, even though a good thing, impacts the training phase of the dog. The dog can be stubborn, and the low attention span does not help. It likes to be the boss, so you might need to break the training sessions into short, engaging ones to keep up. Alternatively, you can hire a trainer for socialization and obedience classes. The tri-mix can stay healthy and active for years with the proper diet, regular and consistent exercise, and health checks. The price varies from breeder to breeder and can go up with additional health tests. It is not ideal for novice owners, so the best approach to finding one would be to visit a few shelters and rescue kennels. It is a highly active dog; therefore, the perfect fit for a busy family. Lastly, it is cuddly and enjoys the company of its family, so you can be sure to get as much love as you accord it. Gifts for Dog Lovers Do you know someone who loves their dog more than anything? Our selection of gifts for dog lovers is sure to have something perfect for the special person in your life. Share this post:. This mixed breed is known for being loyal, protective, and intelligent. They are also known for being very friendly and good with children. The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix is an excellent family dog because they are so loyal and protective of their family. They are also very intelligent which makes them easy to train. These dogs are friendly and good with children, but they may be too big for small children. The German Shepherd: The German Shepherd is a very smart breed of dog that is protective and loyal to its family. They are also excellent guard dogs, but they need early socialization when they are puppies so they can become accustomed to different people, places, and things in the environment. The Corgi: The Corgi gets its name from its short little legs which are similar to a Welsh Corgis short legs because it is in the same family as the German Shepherd Akita mix breed. The Corgi tends to be stubborn at times, but they learn well by repetition. Their trainability shines through in training sessions. The Akita: The Akita has an independent personality that often clashes with other breeds in the same household. This may cause them to have behavior if there are multiple pets in the household. They are best with older children because they view small children as prey. The Akita is a very amazing guard dog because of its alert nature, loyalty, and protectiveness. The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix breed has the physical characteristics of each parent breed that can vary depending on whether they take after their German Shepherd or Corgi side more. These dogs will have a short to medium-length double coat that is long but thick which makes them weatherproofed for both hot and cold weather conditions. Appearance: The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix is a medium-sized dog and it has a height range of about 19 to 24 inches. These dogs have the physical features that you would expect from their parent breeds. They will look like larger versions of their parents, but they might actually be very different in appearance because this is a mixed breed. A German shepherd Akita Corgi mix will probably have the colorings and markings of both parents: white fur and black ears typically or brown fur and red ears Akitas or cream fur with black markings Corgis. They should be given a minimum of one hour of exercise per day. They can be trained using positive reinforcement methods and are generally easy to train. They are also very intelligent dogs that need to be kept busy mentally as well as physically. Since the German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix needs plenty of exercises, they should not be placed in homes with small children. They may accidentally knock over a child while playing and running around. These dogs enjoy being active outdoors and do their best when given plenty of space to run around. They will need their coat brushed every now and then to remove any dead hair or debris that has been collected on them. Just like other breeds this dog could start shedding at certain times so regular brushing should be done to remove the dead hair. The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix comes in a variety of different colors. German Shepherds are usually medium-sized dogs with large heads and chests while corgis are small dogs with big personalities so this mixed breed falls somewhere in between which makes it an average-sized dog. Grooming requirements for this dog depend on whether they have mostly German shepherd traits or mostly Corgi traits. If they have more German Shepherd traits then they will need to be brushed about twice a week and bathed when needed. If they have more Corgi traits then they will need to be brushed once a week and bathed about once every few months. Health Problems: A few health problems may occur in German shepherd Akita corgi mixes. Some of these include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and gastric torsion. Hip dysplasia is a condition that affects the hip joints. It can lead to pain and lameness in the affected dog. Elbow dysplasia is also a joint problem that can cause pain and lameness. Gastric torsion is a condition in which the stomach twists on its axis, leading to obstruction of the airway and potential death. All of these conditions may require surgery for correction. Dogs with hip or elbow dysplasia may also require lifelong and physical therapy. Dogs with gastric torsion may require surgery to correct the problem and may also require lifelong care. If you are considering adding a German shepherd Akita corgi mix to your family, it is important to be aware of these potential health problems and to discuss them with your veterinarian. By doing so, you can make an informed decision about whether this breed is right for you. However, some general things can be said about this mix. In addition, their love of pleasing their owners makes them one of the more obedient breeds out there. This is why they tend to do well in situations where families already have children or plan on having some in the future. These dogs will need plenty of exercise and socialization as they can become destructive if left alone for long periods of time. They will make great family pets but should not be left unsupervised around small animals as they may see them as prey. Overall, the German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix is a versatile dog that is likely to be friendly, affectionate, and protective. If buying a puppy, make sure to do as much research as possible before committing to purchasing one of these dogs. Nutrition Requirements: Though each dog is different, there are some general nutritional requirements that all dogs have in common. Dogs need a diet that is high in protein and low in carbohydrates. This is because their bodies are designed to digest and use proteins more efficiently than carbohydrates. Dogs also need a lot of essential fatty acids, which can be found in animal-based proteins and certain oils. When it comes to specific breeds, some dogs may have additional dietary needs. For example, German Shepherds often require a diet that is high in calcium to support their large bones and muscles. Akitas typically need a diet that is high in omega-3 fatty acids to help with joint health. And Corgis may require a diet that is higher in fiber to help with digestion. If you are looking to feed your German Shepherd Akita Corgi a balanced diet, it is best to consult with your veterinarian. He or she can help you create a diet that meets the specific needs of your dog. And remember, always provide your dog with plenty of fresh water to drink. Socialization: Most dog breeds are considered to be social animals, and as such, they thrive on companionship. But some dogs, like German Shepherds and Akita Corgi, mixes, take this one step further and become very attached to their families. These hybrids are known for being incredibly loyal and protective of their loved ones. Many owners of GSD Akita Corgi mix dogs report that their pets are very friendly and good with children. They also need lots of exercise so if you do not have the time or space to provide that, this may not be the right dog for you. Additionally, these dogs can be difficult to housebreak so patience will be needed. All in all, the German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix is a great breed of dog that makes an excellent family pet. They are loyal, protective, and intelligent which makes them versatile. Their high energy level means that they need lots of exercise, but this can be achieved with a long walk or run each day. It depends on the individual dog and what you are looking for in a pet. Some people may find German Shepherd Akita Corgi Mixes to be great dogs, while others may not be as pleased with the mix. This is a difficult question to answer as there is no one-size-fits-all answer. Some German Shepherd Akita Corgi mixes may be aggressive while others may not. That being said, there are some things you can do to help reduce the risk of your dog becoming aggressive. First, socialize with your dog early and often. This will help him learn how to interact appropriately with other people and animals. Second, provide plenty of exercise and enrichment activities. A tired dog is less likely to be aggressive than a dog who is bored and restless. Akita Corgi mixes are among the most popular designer dogs. They are often chosen as police dogs because of their size and strength. How big will a German shepherd Akita Corgi mix get? Males tend to weigh more than females do, so your pup could potentially be over 60 pounds full-grown! Dog ownership has gotten interesting these days. With the possibility of cross-breeding, picking out the right breed with desired characteristics is now a reality. Breeders have been experimenting with up to three breeds at once and a few success stories have come forth as a result. One of the most fascinating and precious tri-mix dog breeds is the German shepherd Akita Corgi mix. Just from the name, you already know this dog is a winner in the looks department. If you are looking for a cuddly, intelligent, and loyal bear for a dog, this great mix might just be for you. In this guide, you will learn a ton about owning a German shepherd Akita Corgi mix. Some of the things covered include physical characteristics, temperaments, grooming, training, feeding, health, and exercise requirements. Physical Characteristics This unique three-way mix is one of the most interesting dogs around. Expectedly, he has a little bit of everything from his folks. Size, weight, and height vary but if you get a large breed, best believe he got it from two of his parents, the German shepherd often measuring inches , an Akita measuring inches , and a Corgi measuring inches. This adorable dog looks like a little grizzly bear. With the exact frame and power, many people understandably have a problem telling if it is a real dog or not until they see the paws sticking out. Ideally, a Corgi weighs as much as 30 lb, a German shepherd, 95 lbs, and the Akita, up to lbs. This disparity reflects greatly on the end result. This goes for its size and height as well. The German shepherd is considered one of the most intelligent dogs around. This small herding dog is a force to reckon with. Plus, Akitas are thought to be humble and very loyal. When you bring these three breeds together, you will definitely end up with an intelligent and calm dog with a love for the outdoors. He will want to be on the move as much as possible. As for affection and loyalty, expect to get plenty of that. As long as his needs are met, he is one of the most moving and sweet dogs to own. His herding instincts always get the best of him. If you can play fetch or Frisbee, that would be great too. This is not a dog to own if you are a couch potato. A long walk to the park twice a day during weekdays and strenuous activities such as hiking and hill walking during the weekdays is in the works for you. On the positive side, he will keep you super fit and toned. Besides physical exercise, this dog requires mental stimulation as well. Squeaky toys and outdoor ball games will give him the best of both worlds. However, because this dog mixture is dependent on high activity levels, he needs to eat the right amount of food. Of course, beware of the looming danger of obesity but let him eat two balanced diets twice a day. Vets recommend a raw food diet with an occasional intake of fish oil. Glucosamine and Chondroitin supplements will also keep things like hip dysplasia at bay. He is a heavy shedder always leaving lots of hair on sofas and fabric. This means you have to brush his coat a number of times weekly to reduce shedding. A quality vacuum is also essential to keep your floors and surface fur-free. As for baths, moderation is the key. Too many baths are counterproductive as it can dry out his skin. Ideally, a couple of baths every month is sufficient. Needless to say, your dog will depend on you to trim his nails and lean his ears from time to time as well. Health Issues All dog breeds have a disposition to certain health complications. As a matter of fact, this breed has the potential to suffer more health problems than pure or two-cross breeds. Two of his big parents, Akita and German Shepherd are susceptible to hip dysplasia and bloat. This can be passed to the baby. Other common problems include back problems, eye issues, and allergies. Since it is difficult to predict the future of your fur baby health-wise, it is always a good idea to have him checked prior to taking him home. This is definitely costly but it will pay off huge in the end. Many breeders often hide this information so that they can make quick sales. Keep that in mind. Finally, a proper diet, proper exercise, and frequent pet visits will go a long way in keeping your mutt happy and healthy for a long time. Buying a Pet Training This is not the hardest dog to trains but not the easiest either. The different personalities and temperaments play out during training. If he gets most of his character from his German Shepherd parent, expect the training to be responsive. He will likely pick up new skills quite effectively and fast. Of course, this depends on your level of dominance and leadership. If you prove yourself to be a worthy leader, the dog will have an easy time obeying your commands. Corgis and Akitas are sweet and loving but they can be quite stubborn. Find a way to work through this by reminding him who is in charge. If you are not firm enough, he will have a field day taking advantage of this. Right from the beginning, establish your leadership as the Alpha and your dog will quickly give you the respect you deserve. Is a German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix for you? As his name suggests, the German Shepherd originated in Germany, where he was created in the nineteenth century primarily by Captain Max von Stephanitz, who wanted to develop a dog that could be used for military and police work. The result was a dog that encompassed striking good looks, intelligence and versatility. German Shepherds braved artillery fire, land mines and tanks to supply German soldiers in the trenches with deliveries of food and other necessities. American audiences loved them. For a time, the German Shepherd was the most popular breed in the United States. It is one of two breeds known as a Welsh Corgi. The other is the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and both descend from the line that is the northern spitz-type dog. An example of a spitz breed is the Siberian Husky. Another theory is that Pembrokes are descended from the Swedish Vallhunds, which were crossed with the local Welsh herding dogs. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is the younger of the two Akita Corgi breeds and is a separate and distinct breed from the Cardigan. The Corgi is one of the smallest dogs in the Herding Group. It is said that Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 during her reign and are her preferred breed. These dogs have been favored by British royalty for more than seventy years, but among British Commoners, have recently fallen into decline in terms of popularity and demand. The story goes that the Vikings and Flemish weavers brought the dogs with them as they traveled to settle in Wales. Going back as far as the 10th century, Akita Corgis were herding sheep, geese, ducks, horses, and cattle. They are known as one of the oldest herding breed of dogs. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are becoming more popular in the United States and rank 20th 24th in American Kennel Club registrations, as of .The Akita is a large dog breed that originated in the mountainous northern regions of Japan. There are two separate varieties of Akita: a Japanese strain, and an American strain, known as the "Akita" or "American Akita". The Japanese strain called the Akita Inu comes in a narrow palette of colors, with all other colors considered atypical of the breed, while the American strain known simply as the Akita comes in all dog colors. The Akita has a short double-coat similar to that of the Siberian Husky, but long-coated dogs can be found in many litters due to a recessive gene. The Akita is a powerful, independent and dominant breed. Japanese history describes the ancestors of the Akita, the Matagi dog as one of the oldest of the native dogs. The Matagi's quarry included wild boar, Sika deer, and Asian black bear. This early dog tracked large game, holding it at bay until hunters arrived to make the kill. Bernards, and the Tosa Inu. Unfortunately, this was done to create a fighting dog as that industry was taking off in the early 20th century. During World War II the Akita was also crossed with German Shepherd Dogs in an attempt to save them from the wartime government order for all non-military dogs to be culled. The ancestors of the American Akita were originally a variety of the Japanese Akita, a form that was not desired in Japan due to the markings, and which is not eligible for show competition. This very humble and loyal dog helped push the Akita into the international dog world. Professor Ueno lived near the Shibuya Train Station in a suburb of the city and commuted to work every day on the train. On May 25, , Professor Ueno suffered a fatal brain haemorrhage at work. He walked to and from the station each day for the next nine years. He returned home where the professor's relatives cared for him, but he never gave up the vigil at the station for his master. His behavior became world-renowned and in , a bronze statue was erected at the Shibuya train station in his honor. He died shortly after. This statue was melted down for munitions during the war, but a new one was commissioned after the war. Then, it mixes in the German Shepherd, the most accomplished canine in the world. In a typical mix, you have two purebred dogs as parents. Even if your mix is half German Shepherd, for example, it could be that some of the Akita or Corgi traits end up being dominant in your dog. With this ambitious mix, you are getting a surprise package and if you are buying a puppy, and hopefully you will welcome your journey of discovering what your dog will become. Appearance The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix is probably going to be medium-sized, longer than it is tall, with a long tail that is set high. It will likely be well-muscled and will carry itself confidently. It will probably have a gorgeous coat, upright ears and an intelligent, alert look. Its height will probably be around 15 inches 38 cm. Here are the breakdowns of the weights of the individual purebred parents: German Shepherd: 75 — 95 lbs 34 — 43 kg Akita: 70 — lbs .There will be very attractive markings and lighter colors on the legs. The nose is black and the eyes round, in various shades of brown, even blue. There is often a face mask and a saddle. Its outer coat will be straight, lying close to, or standing away from the body. There is often a ruffle around the neck, a feathering around the ears and the coat is usually shorter on the legs. Temperament This mix shares many temperamental traits. All have an ancestry of being working dogs. All of them will need to have jobs to do and will want to be part of a family that they will guard, protect and defend courageously if need be. All are suspicious of strangers. Does Not Like Being Alone This particular mix should not suffer too badly from separation anxiety, but family dogs of any age, and especially puppies, do not like being left alone beyond two to three hours. Unless they have been well exercised, they will look for things to do, which will result in destructive outcomes. The Shepherd, Corgi and Akita breeds feature in German, Welsh and Japanese folklore where all are depicted as particularly close to humans. Can Be Unruly or Aggressive If Untrained Your fluffy, adorable puppy has bloodlines from powerful, independent, intimidating dogs. The Corgi is known for its large and stubborn personality. Unless you socialize it early and train it consistently, constantly teaching it how to behave, you could end up with an aggressive dog. Akitas are banned in some countries. Preferred Climate Is Cold Your mix will likely be double-coated and will love being outside. This is an important point for you to consider, as a double coat means double the grooming. Companion or Suitability Factor The bloodlines suggest this mix will be a rewarding companion. The breeds all seek to be close to their humans. It will be happy as long as it has you in sight. If you are also an action junkie, you can meet its need for competitive and challenging events. Kid-Friendly with Caution As part of socialization, you should teach your puppy and children how to play together safely. The Corgi loves kids; the Shepherd will be protective and the Akita will be very wary until it realizes they are part of its family. Children under 8 should never be alone with dogs. Is Not Apartment Friendly Unless you live on the immediate border of a designated green area that allows dogs, an apartment will be difficult with such a dog. Your dog will probably be large and will definitely prefer to be occupied outside. A farm or house with extensive, fenced grounds is needed. It will give warning of an intruder. It will find, identify and decide if they are ill-intentioned and it will protect you and its territory. It will also attack on command. Also consider that this heavy shedding mix might make for a house that needs cleaned more often. If the Akita comes in strongly, it would be in its element in Search and Rescue work. The Corgi is known to be charming, playful and a bit of a clown and would excel in Emotional Support. All three parent breeds tend to be aloof, especially the Akita. That being said, there are many instances of the mix enjoying other pets. You will just have to guide how your dog responds. The Akita and Corgi have an innate sense of their place in the world, and that is with them being in charge. The German Shepherd has a more nuanced and intellectual attitude and is easier to mold. You can improve their intelligence score by the way you interact with them. Consider joining your local kennel club, attending their puppy socialization classes, and then moving onto basic obedience courses. You will enjoy a gratifying mutual bonding with your dog. Physical Needs The German Shepherd Akita Corgi mix is an extremely active dog that thrives on working hard and working out. Extreme canine sports and obstacle courses are great options that this dog is sure to love. You will need to keep it fueled up on a high-quality diet. It will need food with a high fat and protein content containing glucosamine and chondroitin. Use raw vegetable treats and avoid obesity. A lot will depend on how big your mix grows. Discuss dietary issues with your veterinarian at the first check-up. It will also need extra outdoor activities at least three times a week such as jogging, hiking, and canine sports. Its lifespan is 12 to 16 years. Grooming Your dog will probably have a luxurious, beautiful coat. Investigate a veterinarian recommended food supplement to keep it in good shape. Check the ears weekly and clean as needed. Brush its teeth three times a week. Always check an active dog for any injuries. You will probably have a high shedder and will need a powerful vacuum for all its hair. Bathe your mix only when needed. But boxers are not for everyone. They require a lot of exercise and do not do well when left alone most of the day, Wendy Morawski, a boxer breeder for 33 years, said in an interview. The boxer breed is also known for hereditary disorders, such as cancer and dilated cardiomyopathy, that can be passed to their progeny. As with any breed, the boxer's temperament can vary from dog to dog. Boxer aficionados have identified a few things to look for in selecting the right boxer for your family. Step 1 Take a trip to the library and read all you can about boxers. Visit your favorite social media websites and look for groups dedicated to the boxer dog. Engage in discussion and learn what other boxer owners feed, how they train, and what sex or color they prefer. Educate yourself about what you're getting into, then decide if the boxer is still your breed of choice. Step 2 Look for a responsible breeder who does health tests on the boxer parents before breeding and who has a history of long-lived boxers, Morawski suggests. Boxer breeders sell puppies as companion animals not intended for show for various reasons, such as markings or conformation. Step 3 Visit the breeder's home to ensure that the pups are raised in clean conditions. Expect the "third degree" when being interviewed as a prospective boxer parent, writes author and breeder Stephanie Abraham in her book "The Boxer. Step 4 Insist that the puppy have veterinary clearance as to its health, Morawski advises. A good breeder will have excellent knowledge of the pups offered for sale and will be honest about the litter's pedigree. Step 5 Select a lively, alert puppy who happily greets you and your family; however, if one puppy hangs back, don't dismiss it as not being well-adjusted. Dogs have a pecking order within the litter, and he may not be outgoing until he leaves the pack and gets adjusted to his new home. Step 6 Choose the gender and color you prefer, if you have a choice. Quality breeders usually take deposits or reservations on certain dogs, so you may have only one or two puppies to choose from. A boxer's coat is either fawn, brindle or white. White boxers are not allowed to be shown. Don't buy into the myth that white boxers are rare and that they are all deaf, Morawski says. Step 7 Consider rescuing a boxer dog. These can be fabulous dogs that are given up by their owners for various reasons, including divorce, a move, or never having trained the boxer to control behavioral issues such as fence-jumping or soiling in the house. Morawski, who has worked with numerous rescue organizations, says she has found rescued boxers to be responsive to training and affection. Buying A Boxer Puppy? You can find the breed standard, revised in , at the American Boxer Club website: www. The more common disappointments for pet purchasers come from commercial sources--especially pet shops that often buy puppies from the infamous "puppy mills" that take little notice of the quality or health they are producing. The pet store or dog broker will sell you a puppy with a breeder's name attached to the paperwork--but this puppy may easily have been born in a puppy mill. The reputable breeder, on the other hand, will not only be able to demonstrate the pedigree and registration papers, but will also show you either the sire or dam themselves, or pictures of the parent who may be owned elsewhere. Though the mere presence of "papers" does not guarantee good health, conformation, or temperament, you will most often find these attributes in the puppy who has been raised with loving care in the home or kennel of a conscientious hobby breeder. The serious breeder often strives to produce a potential "champion. Sometimes the distribution of white markings alone may make the difference between the so-called "pet" and show-potential puppy. The pet puppy will have benefited from the same proven bloodlines, nutrition, and medical care as its "champion" littermate. His breeder will have health tested the parents and done the best he can to insure good temperament, soundness, and longevity. Here is your best buy. Boxer magazines publish ads from breeders. The American Boxer Club web site www. Usually any time after weeks. Many states have regulations regarding minimum age. However, your individual circumstances must be considered. Do you have the time to spend with a very young puppy? Will someone be home to housebreak him? Would an exuberant 6-month old puppy overwhelm a tiny child? Or would he be better matched with a 6-year-old youngster? Remember too that the puppy under 3 months needs lots of time to rest. Don't forget that adult dogs, already trained, also make ideal pets. While much can be told at six to eight weeks about the puppy's eventual looks, if you are seeking a show prospect you might be better off waiting until the pup is six to eight months of age. At that time, be prepared to pay a higher price for all the additional time and effort that the breeder has spent raising the show potential Boxer. Male or Female? This choice is a matter of personal preference. Both males and females make admirable pets. Breeding is a serious committment of time, energy, and money, and not to be taken lightly. If breeding is not anticipated, it may be appropriate to spay or neuter your dog. This procedure is best done as your Boxer approaches adolescence. Please be aware that these surgeries should be discussed with your veterinarian as to safety of anesthesia and any long term effects other than sterilization. Spayed and neutered animals are not eligible to compete in the conformation ring but may be shown in performance events. Check this list! Tails should have been docked within a few days of birth. Optional removal of front dewclaws fifth toes is done at the same time. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws. Ear cropping is customary and appropriate but not required--it is a matter of personal preference. Uncropped ears are permitted under the breed standard. If cropped, this procedure is done under general anesthesia, usually between six and nine weeks of age. If the puppy is taken before cropping, the breeder usually makes arrangements. The breeder also advises regarding aftercare and taping if ears are not already standing. Sometimes this is a lengthy process. In the male, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. They should be in place by two to three months of age. A dog with undescended testicles may still make a fine pet, though he would be ineligible to compete in the conformation show ring. Consult your veterinarian for advice. Avoid the unusually quiet, inactive puppy, or the one that might shy away from you. This might mean a fault in temperament or even ill health. Papers the Seller Should Furnish: a. A three or four generation pedigree signed by the seller. There should be no extra charge for this. The pedigree preferably gives the color of the sire and dam, and the AKC registration numbers of each. The registration from the AKC, which is an official document identifying your puppy's individual registration number, sex, birth date, sire and dam, and name of the breeder s. There are two ways to register puppies for the first time: 1 Limited Registration If the puppy is not to be bred, and is being purchased only as a companion pet, the breeder may check off the Limited Registration option. This does register the puppy with the AKC. However, it does not allow any registration of offspring from the mature dog. The breeder and only the breeder can cancel the limited registration should the puppy at maturity be considered of breeding quality. Records the Breeder Should Furnish: a. Date and type of vaccines given. Depending on the type of vaccination program started, your veterinarian will advise you on following through. Vaccination protocols are evolving even among the medical professionals. Date and agent used for worming, if done. Do not worm your puppy without consulting your veterinarian. Avoid store-bought preparations which can be dangerous. Diet your puppy has been receiving. It is well to maintain the regimen begun by the breeder, especially while the puppy is adjusting to his new home. If changes are to be made. When he is an adult it will be wise to maintain your Boxer on two smaller meals a day. The area where the puppies are kept should be clean and light, with space for them to play. You should be able to meet the dam. In carefully-bred litters, more often than not, the sire does not live with the breeder. The dam should have a good temperament and look to be in good condition. Hard copy evidence of current health testing should be available for your perusal. The puppies should seem socialized and comfortable when you handle them. The puppies should have been seen by a veterinarian, and have had their first set of shorts by 8 weeks. Their tails should have been docked and front dewclaws removed within a few days of birth. Expect the breeder to ask you questions: about your home and family, the hours the dog will be left alone while you or the family will be away, and how the puppy will be raised. The breeder should be able to educate you about the breed, and to answer all your questions about raising a boxer puppy. He or she should furnish you with contact information, and willingly agree to be a resource throughout the life of the puppy. The breeder should not plan to place the puppies before they are weeks old. What to ask the breeder Is the breeder a member of a national or local boxer club? How long have they been breeding boxers? Do they show boxers? How many litters has the dam had? Four and preferably fewer litters is the maximum for a dam; she should have been bred no earlier than eighteen months and no later than six years. Although there certainly exist good breeders who are not, this title suggests that minimum standards of showing, health testing and record-keeping are practiced. Ask to see the pedigree of the puppies. Champions close up in the pedigree suggests that the breeder is breeding to animals whose conformation satisfies AKC criteria. Ask about the longevity in the puppies' line. Ask if the grandparents are alive and, if not, when they died and what the cause of death was. The more dogs that lived into double digits, and the fewer identical causes of death on both sides of the pedigree, the better chance your pup has to live a long life. Records the breeder should furnish Three or four generation pedigree signed by the breeder. Registration from the AKC; full if the breeder believes that the puppy is of sufficient quality potentially to be bred, and limited if it is not. Date and type of vaccinations; schedule for you to continue them. Date and agent used for worming. Diet the puppy has been receiving. Health testing and results of the sire and dam: ECHO Doppler a sonogram which can detect subaortic stenosis hour Holtor monitor which can detect abnormal heart function and diagnose cardiomyopathy Thyroid testing diagnose thyroid deficiency DM genetic test results White Boxers Currently, the American Boxer Club official standard for the Boxer does not include the white coat color as acceptable. That does not mean, however, that there is anything wrong with white pups. In fact, there is no genetic distinction between white Boxer puppies and their companion-grade fawn and brindle littermates other than the amount of expression of the gene for "flash". Occasionally, a white puppy will be deaf, but that is easily discernable by the time he or she is old enough to go to a new home. Why only through a reputable breeder? All dogs have a history of carrying certain genetic defects or disease common to their breed and Boxers are no exception to the rule. Some of the more common problems inherent in the boxer breed are Cardiomyopathy, Aortic Stenosis, Bloat, Cancer, Canine Hip Dysplasia and Histiocytic ulcerative Colitis inflammation of the colon. He will choose to breed only dogs from good bloodlines that have a healthy pedigree, free from these common problems, therefore greatly increasing the chances of producing a healthy dog. Stay away from pet stores! Some people are tempted to buy a puppy from a pet store. I caution you to stay away from these places as they purchase their dogs from puppy mills. These breeders have absolutely no interest in the boxer breed. They could care less about there bloodline or their health for that matter and are only in the business to make a lot of money. That little boxer puppy in the pet store window may pull at your heart strings, but the chances of these dogs being diagnosed in the future with one of the above mentioned defects or diseases is greatly increased when they are breed by one of these low life breeders. When you meet with the breeder there are a few things you should look for in helping you choose a puppy. The majority of boxers sold in the U. There are certain characteristics in a puppy that you need to look for to increase your chances of bringing home a boxer pup that will exhibit good behavior, have a great temperament, and be a great companion for you and your family. When you meet with the puppies for the first time look for one that is happy to see you and is not afraid to come to you. Avoid any pups that shy away from you or keep their distance. A puppy that is overly aggressive to its siblings will probably be a bit more difficult to train so you would want to rule these pups out also. This should narrow things down considerably. Now with the remaining group you want to hold them one by one in your hands. Look for the puppies that like being held by you and appear to be very calm in your hands. These puppies would most likely be your best choice. After all, the breeder has already spent 10 to 12 weeks with the puppies and could be very helpful in helping you make your final decision. When you think you have your winner just take a few minutes to examine the puppy. You want a pup that has a nice shiny coat as well as clear eyes no discharge or cloudiness and is free from fleas or ticks. Boxer color choices Boxer dogs basically come in 3 different types of coats; Fawn, which is tan to dark brown with white markings on the legs, face, chest and underside and they may have black markings on the face that looks similar to a mask. Brindle, which is similar to fawn with the addition of a black coat over the base tan or brown that, gives the boxer the appearance of being striped. White, or may be white with some small patches of fawn or brindle called checked. The reason the tail is docked is to prevent injury of the tail when they mature. Another common procedure performed on boxers is cropping of the ears. I personally prefer the un-cropped look and most breeders will give you the option of having this done. Male or Female? No offense to my female readers, but most of the experts believe that the male boxer makes for the more affectionate in the breed. This makes a lot of sense when you think of all the hormonal changes a female dog can go through. Another thing to keep in mind is if you are introducing your boxer into a home with another dog. Your dogs are more likely to get along if they are of the opposite sex. Just go with what you prefer. My boxer, Tori was a neutered female and lived in our home with another female and she was just as sweet as could be.

Help Save Pets Help Save Pets rescue was founded to rescue dogs from pounds and shelters that are healthy and desirable, full of life and are just in need of a forever family. Many pet pounds and shelters, especially in the rural areas, will have a plenty of dogs to home but less space to take care of them because of budget and other logistic issues. This will result in a lower adoption rate and a higher kill rate. To counter the issue, Meg Kremer founded the non-profit organization Help Save Pets to care for and rehome as many as 16, animals since .The chances of adopting a puppy is high as most shelters will not receive puppies under three months of age. The sad reality is they are the most significant demographic that is euthanized as the chances of them carrying diseases are pretty high. If you are looking to donate, know that the organization will invest every penny toward taking care of the animals in the shelter. A Labradoodle breed has been prevalent. They have this teddy-bear-like feature that makes everybody want to get their hands on it. Adopting a Labradoodle is more enriching than buying. You can also save money if you choose to adopt and rehome a Labradoodle than buy one. This is just one reason why it is better to adopt a dog than to buy one. Choosing A Good Labradoodle Rescue If you are planning to adopt a Labradoodle from Labradoodle rescue, there are some things that you might need to know in picking a good Labradoodle rescue. There are so many Labradoodle rescues globally, but not all of them are reputable and have quality. In finding good and quality rescue, here are some things that you can look for in a rescue. Of course, their main objective is to take care of the animals and make sure that they are healthy until they have been found in a new home. These criteria can be reflected through the status of their animals. You can look if the animals are well taken care of and if they are adequately groomed. If the organization is good, they will attend adoption events and even conduct their own. This is to allow awareness of the people. If the rescue cannot allow any more animals in their facility, they will not do it. A good rescue cares for the animals and not for the money. You can check if the staff are friendly and are accommodating by talking to them. They will be happy to assist you and answer your questions. Some people felt overwhelmed entering a dog rescue because they all want to adopt each dog in the facility. This guide is what you should look for when picking a Labradoodle rescue for you and your family. You can look for well-groomed dogs, good and healthy-looking hair, and a dog with so much energy. Pick a dog that is not aggressive. You want to pick a dog that is friendly and open with its possible new owner. Pick a friendly Labradoodle A friendly Labradoodle is easy to take care of. A shy dog will cost you more time and attention because they will not respond to you. You will have to coax them to be comfortable with you. Summary Choosing Labradoodle puppies in Labradoodle shelters is quite hard. You need to find a trusting Labradoodle rescue to find the perfect Labradoodle. The list will help you with your problem. The guide was provided on picking the excellent Labradoodle rescue and Labradoodle for you and your family. Other States. As a non-profit organization, every donation you make goes straight into supporting the rescue dogs to get a better life. Secondhand Mutts — Social Dogs Pick My favorite thing about Secondhand Mutts is that they ensure their dogs can socialize in a daycare environment without cages. Their adoptable dogs are fostered in real homes, so your adopted dog will already be familiar with living in a home and household items. On top of that, to prevent overpopulation, their dogs are spayed or neutered. Additionally, their dogs are fully vaccinated, groomed, and temperature-tested before adoption. Much like Dogs Unlimited Rescue, Secondhand Mutts tries to match the right dog to the most suitable house based on their personalities, needs, and more. Also, they keep the dogs socializing with each other without cages. Before going to the first place that claims to have Labradoodles up for adoption, there are a few factors that you have to consider. Adoption Fees Some adoption fees can be as low as a few dollars, and others can cost thousands. So, before settling on a resume shelter, check their website or call them and ask about the adoption fees or any additional fees you might have to pay. Serving Policy Some organizations operate in a first-come, first-served policy, while others try to match the perfect dog to the owner based on their personalities and needs. The Ohio Valley Labradoodles specializes in saving Labradoodles and finding them forever homes. In addition, they provide the dogs with utmost care and medical attention whenever needed. Heritage Manor is another organization that focuses on Australian Labradoodles. Lastly, The Sanctuary specializes in senior dogs because potential adopters often overlook them. So, if you want to give some love to a senior dog that needs a forever home, this is the place to go. Sharing is caring! Buying a dog from a breeder is going to be exponentially more expensive than adopting from a shelter. Adoption Duration From Application to Purchase Adopting from non-profit, volunteer-run rescues can take anywhere from a week to a month. They might do a phone interview and a house visit before you ever meet the dog. Since the dogs live with foster families, you have to wait until the foster has time to meet with you. If they approve, you can give them the final adoption contract and the adoption fee and take your new pet home. Give your dog the time and space to explore the house and familiarize themselves. Make sure you have the food they like, give them plenty of water, and have treats to reward their good behavior. This structure will help them feel more comfortable in your house. Breeder Mill Red Flags Do your research before buying from a breeder. Some people are just out to make a profit. They want to bring the dog to you instead of letting you see where the dog grew up. There is a great strength of character in the name Ravena. The name is also known to be associated with generosity, being kindhearted and well as having wisdom and compassion. That's a big name to live up to, but I'm ready to try my hardest! At around 4 months of age, I'm your typical full of life puppy that is ready to play, eat, play, sit for a moment while I contemplate what to explore next , take a nap and then play some more. I will need that daily exercise and playtime but with that in I should do fine in town with a yard, out in the country or anywhere in between. I get along marvelously with my siblings and the other foster pups here and would just love a home with a playful sibling. What better way to spend the day then tormenting, ooops did I say that out loud, I meant playing with them, chasing each other around the yard, playing tug with the toys. That's what dreams are made of!! I will be a nice medium size when I get fully growed up. Perfect for those outdoor adventures like strolls in the neighborhood or to the local coffee shop, hiking and camping trips, trips to the doggie park, river excursions or what ever you think up, I'm game to give it a try! And we'll have a blast doing it.But I'll also be that perfect size to cuddle on the couch. At my age I'm at that sponge stage, soaking up.I'd be a pawsome candidate for obedience classes and might even really enjoy some agility classes or learning to play some games with you like hike and seek. With my gorgeous good looks and happy loving life to the fullest attitude, I'll make a great family addition, I just need YOU! These siblings include Ravena, River, Renata and Rocco.

So use a consistent phrase and repeat it each time you take your dog out or place them on a pad. Not introducing your dog to the potty pad Yes, some dog pee pads, such as WizSmart, have an attractant that only your dog can smell, but they still need to be introduced to the pad in the beginning. It will take a few times for them to get familiar with the pad, so be patient and praise them when they get it right. Make sure you take them to the pad immediately after eating, every minutes after playing hard, and when they first wake up, and before they go into their crate at night. Puppy parents are no different. If you want to learn to potty train your puppy quickly, learn what cues they give off when they have to go. For a sleeping puppy in a crate, that means that a 3-month old puppy can probably hold it for about three hours maximum. That way if they need to stop every minutes to relieve themselves, they can. Remember to take your dog outside or put them on a pad immediately after eating or drinking. Slacking off on training when your dog seems to be house trained We get it. Things like weather, not feeling well, excitement holidays, new people in the house and just having an off day can mean your dog can relapse into puppyhood and have an accident indoors. For puppies, this means going potty. Every time your puppy does what you want them to, like hitting the center of the potty pad, or holding it until they get outside, praise them and give them a small treat. They may soil a puppy pad at the edge rather than relieve themselves. They may wander off and soil your carpet or wood flooring. They may go inside their crate. Spanking or hitting your pup, rubbing their nose in the mess, scolding or physically intimidating her will confuse and scare your dog. It might also make her afraid to eliminate near you when outside, especially on a leash! The dog lover, who has never had a pet dog before as her family was busy working, marvelled at the length of the dachshund. On Saturday, she got to pet the dachshund, three enthusiastic golden retrievers and two goldendoodles which had performed at the Singapore Christian Home. The showcase was part of a dog therapy session offered by the Redhot Dynomutts Sayang Squad, a group of mutts trained to work with the elderly in nursing homes and young people struggling with mental health issues. The Sayang Squad was started in by a group of pet owners who got to know one another through the obedience training classes their dogs attended. Three of them thought it would be meaningful for their dogs to perform tricks that they learnt in class and bring joy to the elderly. The dog trainer assessed that their dogs are suitable to be therapy animals because they like meeting people, obey basic commands and do not bark much, so they are unlikely to scare nursing home residents. Nine dogs from the group showed off their talents at the Singapore Christian Home on Saturday morning. When her owner sneezed, Arya the golden retriever, who has a good memory and a keen sense of smell, immediately brought a tissue box to her. Teddy the energetic goldendoodle, dressed in a bib resembling a suit, rocked a dance routine with his owner. Hugo the dachshund balanced a stack of 30 tiny treats on his nose, keeping perfectly still. Golden retriever Troy does not know any stunts, but his goofy energy made the audience laugh. His owner, Sayang Squad co-founder Betty Leow, said he loves to show off. Those at the Jurong Spring home get to speak to a parrot and interact with two parakeets and a quail — which remain in their cages — once or twice a month. Sadie the doodle gets cuddled by residents during a visit to Singapore Christian Home on June 17, .The performances and interaction sessions allow the participation of the frail elderly and those who have cognitive difficulties after a stroke. They are not judgmental and give unconditional love. I love to hold them. I hope they can come in a few more times. See our range This canine sport first appeared at Cruft's in , where it began as a small hurdle race for dogs. It was a hit with the dogs taking part, as well as their owners, and the sport became a runaway success — literally so, in the case of some mischievous and overexcited participants! But what actually is dog agility? In dog agility, your dog moves through an obstacle course with your guidance. Dogs run off lead, so your only controls are voice and body language, requiring some exceptional obedience training. Many people think agility is only for Border Collies and their super-fit owners but actually most DOGS can do agility with varying degrees of success and huge amounts of enjoyment. There are competitions for dogs of various sizes including mini agility, or you can just do it for fun and for the social opportunities it provides for you and your DOG. All that moving around will help keep both of you fit, and your training skills will improve every time you practise. You can find out more about dog agility and related nationwide events on The Dogs NZ Agility website. Try out flyball This is a far more energetic affair. This competitive team sport runs on a knockout basis. Flyball is an obstacle race involving two teams of four dogs. In the game, dogs from each team spring over a series of jumps usually four , run to a box, activate a catapult machine with their front paws, catch the ball that flies out and race all the way back to the start. In flyball there are lots of interesting techniques your dog can learn from you. As well as having to clear the hurdles, your dog needs to keep a smooth approach and land well to cover the maximum amount of distance in the least time possible. If your dog loves to catch balls and run at full speed off the lead, just imagine what they can do in a flyball race! This can be a good skill for your puppy to master and you can have a great time adding another string to your training bow even if you have no intention of competing. And who knows… you could get addicted! Speed and punctuality aren't important, but success is based on the way you and your dog work together. Dogs of all sizes and breeds can enjoy it and even compete at the highest levels, but it does need you to perfect your training and obedience skills as well as your dancing and coordination! The dog runs out in front following directional commands while wearing a comfortable padded harness attached to a waistband of the owner by a 2m bungee.

If they are less than a year old, they still need more time to reach their full adult size. Many Golden Retrievers can take up to two years to completely fill out, though their weight at one year old is usually close to their full adult weight. A puppy is rarely larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you a general idea of their maximum weight. If their paws still look large or oversized next to their body and legs, they are probably still filling out and have some growing left to do, as this is a classic sign of adolescence in canines. What is the size of a full-grown Golden Retriever? As adults, Golden Retrievers will appear overall symmetrical and have a powerful body hidden beneath beautiful, golden fur. Golden Retrievers are stunning, sunny dogs that easily steal our hearts. Unfortunately, as a purebred dog breed, they are more susceptible to genetic diseases, which can compromise their lifespan and quality of life. However, many genetic disorders can be treated or prevented with regular veterinary care. Remember that prevention is almost always easier and less expensive than treatment. Your veterinarian may recommend a large-breed growth food to your Golden Retriever puppy to support their growth rate which can help prevent or decrease the severity of hip dysplasia in adulthood. According to the Veterinary Centers of America , Golden Retrievers are also more prone to gaining excess weight. Golden Retrievers are also susceptible to various genetic health disorders, such as oral tumors and aortic stenosis. Aortic stenosis is most commonly found in large, purebred dogs, including Golden Retrievers, and occurs when the aortic valves to the heart narrow. Aortic stenosis causes the body to struggle to pump blood through the valve, creating additional stress on the body. If untreated, aortic stenosis can lead to muscle failure and even fatality. However, veterinarians can treat many genetic diseases like aortic stenosis and oral tumors through surgery and medication. Even with proper prevention and wellness care, necessary veterinary visits can be expensive, with many treatments costing thousands of dollars. Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. And have fun! When is a Golden Retriever Full Grown? Goldens are a large breed, and like other such breeds, Golden Retrievers grow until they reach their full height and weight. This process typically occurs between the ages of one to two years old, or 18 to 24 months; however, there is some variation in how fast each dog grows during this period due to both genetic factors and environmental ones, like diet or exercise level. Use our weight chart to help keep an eye on how your Golden puppy develops as she grows. Is Your Golden Retriever Healthy? Golden Retrievers are beautiful, friendly dogs that will steal your heart with their cute antics. That said, many disorders that adult Golden Retrievers have are treatable or preventable through regular vet care. Preventative care, along with a pet insurance policy, is an ideal combination to give your Golden a long, happy life. Some of the most common medical conditions that Golden Retrievers are susceptible to developing are: Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia Golden Retrievers are prone to develop hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia, which are common orthopedic issues seen in many other large dog breeds. The canine hip and elbow rotate smoothly within its socket joint, which holds them together with powerful ligaments. When these areas degrade due to wear and tear caused by poor alignment or injury, excessive stress and uneven bone wear are placed on the attached ligaments, leading to lameness, stiffness, arthritis, and pain. When your dog suffers from dysplasia, simple tasks like jumping into the car or climbing stairs can be difficult. A vet can assess the severity with imaging technology and prescribe relief for any present symptoms, allowing the dog to return to activities as usual. Skin allergies and conditions Golden Retrievers are at risk for various skin problems, including allergic reactions and parasites. They also require more care than other breeds to keep their coats clean due to the deep undercoat that insulates against cold weather. Keep an eye out for any allergies your pup might have towards certain items in their environment, as well as molds and dust, which could trigger reactions on contact-sensitive areas like ears or paws. This breed is also prone to various skin conditions, including granulomas a type of non-cancerous tumor , sebaceous cysts, and lipomas. Cancer The cancer rate among Golden Retrievers is sadly all too common. Golden Retrievers are also often diagnosed with other cancers, including lymphosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and mastocytoma. Heart disease and respiratory issues Golden Retrievers are at risk for various conditions that affect the heart, lungs, and circulation. This disease has severe effects, including death if not treated immediately. If you notice any signs like lethargy or weakness along with difficulty breathing, then see a veterinarian right away as your dog might be suffering from issues caused by SAS. Protect your Golden retriever puppy with pet insurance. You might not be able to control the genes passed down to your Golden Retriever puppy from generation to generation. What if your dog develops cancer or heart issues? The veterinary costs can add up pretty quickly without proper pet insurance coverage. A quality policy will cover a significant portion of all emergency procedures and medication costs. At this stage, nipping bad behaviors in the bud is more important than imprinting positive ones. Instead, just redirect them to positive behavior and reward them accordingly. By this point, your puppy should have already been given their distemper and parvovirus vaccinations. By this point, they should be fully housetrained or close to it. Your dog will be likely to gnaw and bite on anything they can get their chompers on—including you. Stay calm and redirect their attention to appropriate objects like chew toys. Your Golden should be fully accustomed to their new kibble at this point, and you should feed them three to four times per day. A 3-month-old dog should also get a DHHP booster, which protects them from parvo, distemper, parainfluenza, and adenovirus. You can play with your pup as much as you like, but take care not to put too much stress on their joints. Avoid a bunch of running and jumping, especially on hard surfaces. Your dog can transition from four meals per day down to three at this point, but the meals should probably be larger. This can cause digestive issues until your dog gets accustomed to it, so be prepared to clean up a few messes. Training should continue, although your primary focus will likely be convincing your pup to chew on something besides your shoes. Your dog will need another DHPP booster at this point, as well as a rabies vaccination. Other optional vaccines include Bordetella, Lyme disease, coronavirus, and leptospirosis. This could cause a brief burst of intense biting and chewing, so power through it. Make sure your pup has plenty of chew toys available to them. Stairs in particular should be avoided. Your pup is likely to start asserting itself at this stage and may start to mature sexually if not spayed or neutered. There are no vaccinations required at this point. Everyone knows how much fun it is to raise teenagers, right? This can lead to undesirable behaviors like aggressiveness, increased tendency to roam, and destructiveness. As a result, you may think that your dog is too skinny, but resist the urge to increase their rations. While most breeds have a puppy coat that they eventually grow out of, Goldens do not. Instead, their puppy coat becomes their undercoat, so you may notice your dog becoming increasingly fuzzy. The teenage rebelliousness should be wearing off by this point, and your dog is ready to begin training in earnest. You should still be feeding them twice daily, and they should stay on puppy kibble for at least another 6 months. Goldens reach their full height between 9 and 12 months old. Females tend to get there faster, but males will be taller in the end. You may also need to cut back on the amount that you feed them. It depends on the individual dog, but females generally reach maturity first. Spaying or neutering your dog has its pros and cons. The pros are fairly obvious: less marking, reduced misbehavior, and zero chance of getting an unexpected litter of puppies. Spaying and neutering can also protect against certain cancers. You may want to wait until your dog is at least 12 months old before getting them fixed. This also leaves the window open longer in which they can suffer skeletal damage, though, so be careful about how active you allow them to be. However, stunted growth and growing too quickly can cause serious health problems, so you should check with your vet to make sure your dog is growing on schedule. Stunted growth is usually caused by malnourishment or a medical problem. You should have your pup tested for parasites like hookworm or ringworm, and consider switching them to a higher-quality, calorie-dense food. If left untreated, malnourishment can lead to weak bones, muscles, and immune system. As you might expect, growing too quickly is often caused by feeding your dog too much. American and British Goldens are similar. However, American Goldens tend to be less stocky and muscular, instead having a leaner appearance. They may weigh a bit less as well. They tend to be taller as well, often standing an inch or two higher than their counterparts. Conclusion Golden Retrievers make excellent pets, and we understand how hard it is to resist the temptation to bring a puppy home. If you do, though, you should understand what to expect from your new dog. Steady growth is what you want to see, without too many peaks or valleys. This sets your dog up for a long, healthy lifespan. Every dog develops at their own pace, so as long as you feed your pup an appropriate amount of high-quality puppy kibble and get them vaccinated regularly, you should be fine. See also:. By Tom Massey Mar 02, Adopting a golden retriever is one of the best decisions you can make. These loving dogs are constantly praised for their gentle and calm, yet playful nature, making them perfect dogs for all walks of life and types of families. So when you do finally bring your Golden Retriever puppy home, you want to do everything you can to give them a long and healthy life for years to come. This is a wide range, so keep in mind that the weight of your Retriever will vary depending on genetic factors and sex. For example, female Golden Retrievers will weigh closer to 55 pounds while Golden Retriever males are heavier and will weigh closer to 75 pounds. Females also typically reach their full size by their first birthday, while males may continue growing through their second year. You can usually tell the size males and females will be based on what their parents look like, which is why Snowy Pines encourages meeting the parents or browsing through their photos and biographies online. Then, calculate 1. What to Expect: This age is crucial for mother-puppy bonding since he will depend on his mother for food, cleaning, and socialization. Image Source Weeks months Golden Retriever Male Weight: Between 8 to 12 weeks, your male puppy will average between 10 to 22 pounds. Golden Retriever Female Weight: Although females will grow to be smaller than males, they are typically around the same weight at this age group. The puppies become very playful, curious, and discover their voices little by little. Introductory training like house training is essential. Socialization is also important, which is why Snowy Pines ensures that all puppies stay with their littermates until adoption. For female puppies, 6 months is a little over the halfway point to their full-size, and males are essentially smaller versions of their adult bodies. Remember, at this age, you can multiply by two to determine their adult weight! What to Expect: Socialization is still crucial at this age, and more intense training can also begin. The puppy should also be kept in happy and safe environments, as any exposure to something fearful at this age may impact him long-term. This is entirely normal: Think of your puppy as a teenager who is going through adolescence and waiting for the rest of his body to catch up. They may get territorial and challenge you and other pets for dominance. Most Golden Retrievers will be fully grown by 24 months old, although this varies. Golden Retriever Female Weight: In most cases, females are finished growing before 16 to 24 months. Whatever their nature is like at the to month mark is likely what it will be throughout their adult life. They are loyal, friendly, and calm, making them the perfect companion for small and large families alike. However, Goldens are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases that are common in bigger breeds that are typically caused by overfeeding, stunted or accelerated growth, and genetic issues. One of the most common diseases that goldens experience is Osteochondritis dissecans OCD. OCD is a developmental disease that affects large-breed dogs because of the accelerated growth they experience. It is an inflammatory condition that causes abnormal cartilage development on the end of a bone in the joint. This can lead to joint problems like arthritis and hip dysplasia which commonly appears in the elbow, hip, and knee. Image Source The good news is that, although larger breeds like golden retrievers are prone to joint issues like this, you may be able to help prevent it through proper practice. OCD is a specific disease that is more common in dogs that receive too much energy and calcium in their diets. Other common factors are genetics, rapid growth, and hormonal factors. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and all that extra weight can leave your puppy with skeletal abnormalities that put too much weight on joints. Another way to avoid accidentally stunted or accelerated growth is to ensure your golden retriever puppy is getting fed appropriately and receiving the right amount of calories. Image Source Months Between 2 and 4 months old, your puppy should eat 4 times per day with 2 ounces per meal. This will add up to 7 to 9 ounces per day, depending on how much he willingly eats. Keep him on puppy food through his first year before switching to young adult food. They must receive regular exercise every day. However, this depends on their age. As previously covered, the more your puppy grows, the more susceptible to common diseases like joint problems. Breeders with years of experience, like the team at Snowy Pines, work hard to keep pure bloodlines so that all of the parents and their litters are as healthy as they can be, which helps guarantee a lifetime full of happiness without any issue. Share on. Not all goldens will grow to the same size and at the same rate. The size of the parents is always a good indicator of whether your dog will be above or below average in size. However, while natural variation is nothing to worry about, stunted growth or accelerated growth is. If a golden retriever puppy is malnourished or suffering from an unidentified medical condition usually hookworm or ringworm , their natural growth can be compromised. This can lead to serious medical issues in later life, as it can leave them with weak bones, weak muscles, and a weak immune system, as well as a tendency to develop both skin and digestive issues. Growing too quickly, largely as a result of overfeeding, can also pose a major health risk. As well as leading to obesity, carrying too much weight at the development stage can leave your golden retriever with skeletal abnormalities, hip dysplasia, and osteochondrosis , a condition that affects the joints. With these tips, you will help fight off those genetic health disorders as well. Appropriate Diet Start off by speaking to your vet for guidance on foods to use for the different life stages. At the very least, you will need a nutritionally complete and balanced diet made for large breeds. Good food will help your pup gain the right amount of weight, look healthy, and have enough energy. Proper exercise will build their muscle and bone strength, prevent obesity, increase their agility, stop destructive behavior, and help them release pent-up energy. Vaccines will help to prevent infectious diseases such as hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies, and distemper, all of which could affect the growth and overall health of your puppy. This will be a plus for her overall health. It would also be great to have your vet do routine health checks on your puppy. This way, no issue will go unnoticed, and treatment can be administered early for better outcomes. A shiny coat and bright eyes are a plus. Alternatively, if you notice rapid weight gain or loss, unusual bumps and lumps on their skin, digestive issues, changes in behavior, and visual or hearing complications, take your dog to the vet right away. Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers, especially females, grow pretty quickly. Males could take up to 18 months to achieve the same milestone. However, both will still need an additional year to fill out the chest fully. Adult height, on the other hand, will be reached between 9 and 12 months. As always, females will get there a bit faster than males. You can get a rough idea of how big your golden retriever will grow by first studying the parents. Take note of the size that both of the parents and previous litters have had. Rarely will a puppy grow larger than its parents, so the measurements you gather will give you a better idea of how tall and heavy your golden retriever will get. Full-grown, healthy, male golden retrievers have a height of between 22 and 24 inches while the females are 20 to 22 inches tall. In terms of height and body structure, the Canadian golden retriever has no rival. Spaying and neutering specifically affect the development of bones and also ligament and tendon strength. In fact, some studies report higher incidences of cranial cruciate ligament tears and hip dysplasia among golden retrievers that went through this procedure. Therefore, consult your vet when deciding if and when to spay or neuter your dog. The weight of your golden retriever is a good indication of their healthy development. While male and female Goldens will have different weights and show goldens tend to be heavier than working goldens, overall, they should be hitting the weights listed in the growth and weight chart above. If your dog is not hitting these milestones, consult your vet about malnutrition, possibly caused by worms, and excessive golden retriever growth, which is often the result of overfeeding. If you feel like your pooch is missing any of them, again, it is time to consult your vet. In general, good nutrition and a loving home is a recipe for a happy and healthy golden retriever. If you want to know more about your golden retriever, you can do a DNA test, too. You can choose one of the tests below:. That means Apache might have been a pounds at full size! He was a tall boy! Something I found interesting was how small Charlie was. Not so with Charlie. His dam was a 65 pound female. At 55 pounds you would think he was the runt but all of the puppies from his litter were on the smaller side. Raven was the dam and she was 65 pounds. The sire was on the larger side at 80 pounds. My guestimation was their golden puppy would grow to be pounds. Guess what? The last I heard their not so little puppy grew to be 82 pounds at just under 2 years old. In our experience Golden Retrievers are full grown at around 2 years old. Of course as your dog enters her senior years she will have less energy and exercise less. When the energy level drops you want to be sure you decrease the amount of food you feed because your dog will be burning fewer calories. Our Golden Retrievers have experienced rapid growth from around 3 months to 6 months old. My guess would be your Golden Retriever will be between 39 pounds and 53 pounds. One of our female Golden Retrievers weighed 41 pounds when she was 6 months old. Her full grown weight was 59 pounds. I already answered this question but I really want to drive the point home that males are larger than females. Especially if you look at my chart of personal experiences with Golden Retrievers. The largest male Golden was 90 pounds and the smallest was 45 pounds. While we all have our preference for male vs female dogs I believe one of the big differentiators is size. As we discussed here there is a lot of variation in size. The breed standard for a Goldens weight is between 55 — 75 pounds. However, you can see from our experience that the range can be much bigger with our Goldens ranging from 45 — 90 pounds. Hopefully, this article helps you figure out how big your Golden Retriever puppy will be. If you have a Golden Retriever of any age please tell us about him or her in the comment section below. A healthy weight for a golden retriever is… Golden retriever dogs are known for their friendly, outgoing personalities. But did you know that golden retrievers have a healthy weight range that greatly differs from other breeds of dog? This is because the weight of a golden retriever is dependent on many factors including: Breed and size: Golden retrievers weigh between 50 and 70 pounds when fully grown. Age: The rate at which your dog gains or loses weight will change as he ages. For example, puppies typically gain weight faster than adult dogs do because they need more calories to fuel their growth. If your golden retriever is showing signs of being overweight elderly dogs may start gaining fat around their face , consider reducing portions and adding more physical activity into his daily routine. So, when do golden retrievers grow fully up? It varies greatly from dog to dog, but 15 months is usually the maximum. Having dog insurance can provide peace of mind in case of unexpected vet bills, as it can help cover the cost of treatments and surgeries for common health concerns such as hip dysplasia and cancer. Additionally, some insurance plans offer coverage for preventative care, such as vaccinations and routine check-ups, which can help keep your Golden Retriever healthy and happy. Not to mention the heartache involved with dealing with a sick pup. Be wary of shady breeders All I know is that my worst nightmare is falling in love with my new Frenchie puppy only to come to find out he has a serious illness that the breeder failed to disclose to me. Consider Investing in Pet Insurance to save money If you are worried about the possibility of serious health issues , pet insurance is a great investment! French Bulldogs have been quickly rising in popularity — in fact, they just ranked 1 on the American Kennel Club rankings in .Why does everybody want a Frenchie?! I could go on all day. The French Bulldog can do it all Frenchies can lay on the couch all day with you or go out to explore the great outdoors! Frenchies are huge couch potatoes! Your Frenchie will be more than happy to travel where ever with you! However, that price can increase significantly, even into five figures, depending on the location and reputation of the breeder. Reproducing requires artificial insemination. These factors increase the investment for French bulldog breeders. The more investment a breeder makes into producing healthy high-quality dogs in good environments, the higher the price will be. The rarer the color is, such as blue, lilac or chocolate, the more you can expect to pay. Certain coat patterns, such as pied, merle or brindle, will also be more expensive. Female French bulldogs and those with blue eyes are pricier as well. Adopting through the French Bulldog Rescue Network is a more affordable way to acquire a new puppy or adult Frenchie. The French bulldog breed is exceptional with many rare characteristics that make them popular among dog owners. But there are also some challenges and things to watch out for. French Bulldog Size Fully grown French bulldogs average 12 inches tall. Adult females often weigh between 16 and 24 pounds, and males reach 20 to 24 pounds. Most French bulldogs will continue to gain weight until about 14 months old but stop gaining height between nine and 12 months. There are also mini Frenchies, also known as teacup French bulldogs. These are bred to be miniature versions of standard French bulldogs, weighing between five and 14 pounds. They typically shed in spring and fall, so you should increase coat brushing during that time to help reduce hair in your home. This can help you save on grooming costs. French Bulldog Appearance Along with breeds like English Bulldogs and pugs, French bulldogs are a brachycephalic breed, which means they have a shortened snout. Their faces are wrinkly and scrunched, giving them a distinct look, even as puppies. French Bulldog Colors French bulldogs come in many different coat colors. These include neutral colors — such as cream, gray, tan and black — as well as more rare colors like lilac, blue and chocolate. The rarer the color, the more expensive the price of a French bulldog will be. French Bulldog Temperament These pups are affectionate and playful, making them great companions. Training is recommended for French bulldogs since they can march to the beat of their own drum without guidance. Most Frenchies respond well to training, especially when treats are involved. Trainers believe French bulldogs understand commands but are moody and will respond as they feel like it. Frenchies are great family dogs, do well around other pets and prefer companionship. A companion will also allow you to leave them alone for longer periods of time without them getting frustrated. But, of course, another pet will come with its own costs. French Bulldog Activity Level Frenchies are not the best dog if you want a jogging companion. French Bulldog Life Expectancy French bulldogs have an average lifespan of 12 years if well taken care of. If they remain in great health, they can live as long as 15 years. Your veterinarian will periodically examine your Frenchie to ensure he or she is growing properly. Due to their flat faces and short necks, it can be difficult for French bulldogs to use standard feeding bowls. You can instead provide elevated dog food and water bowls to help your pet eat and drink more comfortably. Buying treats, toys or a comfortable dog bed can also help your Frenchie feel welcome in its new home. Check out our French Bulldog Puppies What is included in our prices? This could indicate the dog is coming from a puppy mill. You can read why you should avoid buying dogs from puppy mills here. But the popularity of the dog means there can be a lot of competition for the Frenchies that do need a home. There are a lot of factors that can influence price, and if you are looking for a show dog or a dog for breeding, you should expect to pay a lot more. Certain colors, which are desirable but genetically quite rare, can also push up the price. A brindle or black puppy will usually be at the lower end of the scale, but a breeder might ask a lot more for a platinum or blue fawn puppy. This is Micro, a perfect body specimen for a Frenchie. He also has a blue coat and orange eyes, which are quite rare in dogs. What About Mini Frenchies? Mini Frenchies, also known as Teacup Frenchies, are the same fantastic dog, but they are quite a bit smaller than usual. You can expect them to weigh just 5 to 14 pounds on average. Due to their smaller size, though, their bodies can be fragile, so it is important not to engage in rough play with them. These dogs are even harder to breed see below than standard French bulldogs, so they are also quite a bit more expensive. Why are they so expensive, then? One factor is high demand since they are a very desirable dog breed. But that is not the whole story, since Labs are also one of the most popular dog breeds. Health Problems One of the biggest factors is these dogs have a lot of health problems. Most of their health issues are related to their flat, brachycephalic faces similar to Pugs and American bulldogs , which makes them particularly prone to breathing issues and allergies. This unique facial structure can also affect the formation of their jaw, and the health of their eyes, and can even affect their healing from certain illnesses and injuries. On top of this, they can also be prone to hip dysplasia, kneecap shifts, and heat stress. Fortunately, breeders try to control these breed-specific issues. It is essential that responsible breeders do their best to control these conditions, which means DNA scanning, genetic testing, multiple trips to the vet, and paying extra close attention to the developing puppies. Of course, all of this comes with a cost. Breeding Problems The other big problem is that Frenchies are extremely hard to breed. As well as the operation itself is expensive, the mother and pups need extra care afterward. Plus, breeders need to give their mother dogs significantly longer to recuperate before they can think about breeding them again. On top of that, French bulldogs have small litters—usually just three puppies. It is very unusual for a Frenchie to have five or more puppies in a single litter. So, if you are looking for a French bulldog puppy, you can expect to be on a waiting list for several months before a puppy is available. As well as being expensive to buy, French bulldogs can be pretty costly to care for, again mostly because of their health problems. They will probably need regular trips to the vet, and insuring them can be expensive because they are known to have health issues. But what are some of the main costs that you can expect to incur when bringing home a new puppy? Supplies It can surprise pet parents just how many things you need to care for a new dog. For starters, your new pup will need a bed, toys, bowls, a collar, and a leash. A crate can also be a big expense if you choose to crate train. However, because crate training is not so common among French bulldogs, first-time owners might also want to consider some professional training classes. Food Food is one of the biggest neverending expenses for any dog. Puppy food is also a bit more expensive than adult food because of its high protein content. Ideally, your dog should be eating puppy food until they are about 9 months old. French bulldogs should be eating around 25 to 30 calories per pound of their body weight each day. You can read more about pet insurance for puppies here. They will usually only bark when there is something wrong, so it is worth paying attention when they do vocalize. This is one of the reasons why they make excellent apartment dogs. While French bulldogs are adorable, they are specifically bred for their appearance, and this has led to a lot of genetic issues that affect their health and can leave them in a lot of pain in their later years. Many people object to putting the health of an animal second to appearance and therefore object to buying French bulldogs and supporting the purebred breeding industry. In theory, if there was no demand for these dogs, this kind of exploitative breeding would stop. In practice, this is difficult to imagine, considering how popular the breed is. Can French bulldogs stay home alone? French bulldogs actually tolerate being left alone relatively well. However, all dogs need a lot of love and companionship, and no dog responds well to being left on their own for 10 hours a day five days a week. Dogs become members of the family, and if they are going to thrive, they need to be treated with that kind of attention. Are Frenchies hard to potty train? However, they are little dogs with small bladders. They also tend to gobble down their food, which means they can be prone to smelly gas expulsions. How much exercise does my Frenchie need? French bulldogs do well on just a 15 to minute vigorous walk each day. They are also quite playful, so they burn off energy just playing around as well. Are French bulldogs aggressive? Despite the reputation of bulldogs, Frenchies are not aggressive. They are friendly and get on well with people and other animals. However, all animals are a combination of nature and nurture, so they can learn aggressive habits if they are not properly cared for. Are Frenchies high maintenance? They can also be left alone without expecting too much trouble. On the other hand, their tendency towards breed-specific health issues does mean they need regular visits to the vet. They may need special medications for things like breathing issues, and in later life, they may need things like a special bed. The Verdict French bulldogs are excellent dogs. They are great little companions who will find it easy to live in your apartment with you, but they are also fun-loving and curious. While they are great dogs, they are also quite expensive. This is due to high demand and some pretty serious difficulties when it comes to breeding them. They have small litters, almost always delivered by c-section, and health screenings and vet visits are a big burden for breeders. If you want something special, such as a rare color, you should expect to pay a lot more. You can also expect them to be relatively expensive dogs to own because they do need regular and close contact with a good vet to maintain their health. At a glance, the French bulldog is: Highly intelligent and trainable Small, meaning it does well in fairly small apartments Expensive due to demand and how difficult they are to breed Prone to breed-specific health issues So, are they worth all this expense and trouble? We think they are. French bulldogs can be the ideal pet for first-time owners with limited space and time but a lot of love to give. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. Check out more of our favorites on our New Puppy Checklist. Post navigation. While litter box training does not replace a dog's need to run and play outdoors, it can keep your home cleaner with fewer accidents. The type of litter you purchase is extremely important, as a puppy may try to eat it. Choose a natural litter that does not clump to avoid an emergency visit to your veterinarian. With consistency and positive reinforcement, your puppy will be using the litter box on his own every day. Step 1 Choose a location in your home for your puppy's litter box training. If you have been using housebreaking pads or newspaper for your puppy, place the litter pan nearby. Choosing a tile or hardwood floor area is wise to make accidents easy to clean up. Step 2 Fill a disposable cookie sheet or pan with wood pellets or recycled paper litter. A cookie sheet is smaller and therefore easy for a little puppy to climb into and jump out. Wood pellets or litter made specifically for dogs is larger and more absorbent than traditional cat litter. Once it is soiled, it will break down to a sawdust consistency. Step 3 Place your puppy in the litter pan. Continue placing your puppy in the pan hourly. Each time you place him in the pan, give him a vocal cue such as "go on" or "potty. Your puppy may still have a few accidents, or not get his entire body into the box before attempting to use it. Do not punish him for accidents near the box. Instead, continue placing him in the box at regular intervals. Step 4 Replace the cookie pan or sheet with a litter box large enough to accommodate your growing puppy. Place the litter box in the same spot as the disposable pan for consistency, and show the new pan to your puppy. Tips If you notice your puppy begin to relieve himself outside of the pan, make a noise such as a clap or whistle to distract him, and place him in the litter pan. Valid for any purchase, today! Set up an exercise pen and cover the floor inside the area with newspapers or potty pads. Give your dog dog broth to drink in order to get lots of repetitions and begin work on this over the weekend. Crate your dog, and then every 30 minutes place him in the pen for 5 minutes set a timer. If he "goes". If he doesn't "go", then back in the crate for another 30 minutes. Continue to feed your dog broth. Once he is pottying on the smaller area of papers or pads, transfer the papers or pads into the final potty area or "litter box". If your dog is comfortable now using the potty area, the next step is to leave the exercise pen door open and after you take him out of his crate, encourage him to go in by himself to potty. You are almost there! Now you can remove the exercise pen and take your dog out of the crate and watch carefully so that you can encourage pottying in the potty area. Now, move the potty area to it's final place and work on getting your dog to use it in that location. Once your dog is going to the potty area and "going" with your guidance, you can remove the crate and simply supervise of course rewarding any breakthroughs. A Male Wrap might be a helpful preventative for your boy dogs at this stage. You may need to encourage your dog to go to his potty area from areas in the house that are farther away. If there are any accidents, you will want to increase your supervision and decrease the amount of freedom your dog has. You can decrease freedom by keeping your dog in a small area such as a crate, pen or indoor tether. Accidents are part of the process, but if you follow these basic house training guidelines, you can get the newest member of your family on the right track. To potty train your puppy, establish a routine Puppies do best on a regular schedule. The schedule teaches them that there are times to eat, times to play and times to do their business. Typically, a puppy can control their bladder one hour for every month of age. So if your puppy is 2 months old, they can hold it for about two hours. Take your puppy outside frequently—at least every two hours—and immediately after they wake up, during and after playing, and after eating or drinking. Pick a bathroom spot outside, and always take your puppy on a leash to that spot. While your puppy is relieving themselves, use a specific word or phrase that you can eventually use before they go to remind them what to do. Take them out for a longer walk or some playtime only after they have eliminated. Reward your puppy every time they eliminate outdoors. This step is vital, because rewarding your dog for going outdoors is the only way to teach what's expected of them. Put your puppy on a regular feeding schedule. What goes into a puppy on a schedule comes out of a puppy on a schedule. Depending on their age, puppies may need to be fed two or three times a day. Feeding your puppy at the same times each day will make it more likely that they'll eliminate at consistent times as well, making house training easier for both of you. Pick up your puppy's water dish about two and a half hours before bedtime to reduce the likelihood that they'll need to relieve themselves during the night. Most puppies can sleep for approximately seven hours without needing a bathroom break. If your puppy does wake you up in the night, don't make a big deal of it; otherwise, they will think it is time to play and won't want to go back to sleep. Turn on as few lights as possible, don't talk to or play with your puppy, take them out to the spot where they relieve themselves and then return them to bed. Top 10 pet tips Sign up to receive our exclusive e-book full of important information about caring for your pet, including training techniques and answers to frequently asked questions. Tether your puppy to you or a nearby piece of furniture with a six-foot leash if you are not actively training or playing. Watch for signs that your puppy needs to go out. Some signs are obvious, such as barking or scratching at the door, squatting, restlessness, sniffing around or circling. When you see these signs, immediately grab the leash and take them outside to their bathroom spot. If they eliminate, praise them and reward with a treat. Keep your puppy on leash in the yard. During the house training process, your yard should be treated like any other room in your house. Give your puppy some freedom in the house and yard only after they become reliably house trained. When you can't supervise, confine When you're unable to watch your puppy at all times, restrict them to an area small enough that they won't want to eliminate there. Browse Dog Crates on Amazon. You can use a portion of a bathroom or laundry room blocked off with baby gates. Or you may want to crate train your puppy. Be sure to learn how to use a crate humanely as a method of confinement. If your puppy has spent several hours in confinement, you'll need to take them directly to their bathroom spot as soon as you return. Mistakes happen Expect your puppy to have a few accidents in the house—it's a normal part of house training. Here's what to do when that happens: Without a lot of drama, immediately take them to their outside bathroom spot. Praise your pup and give a treat if they finish there. Don't punish your puppy for eliminating in the house. If you find a soiled area, just clean it up. Rubbing your puppy's nose in it, taking them to the spot and scolding them or any other punishment will only make them afraid of you or afraid to eliminate in your presence. Punishment will do more harm than good. Clean the soiled area thoroughly. Puppies are highly motivated to continue soiling in areas that smell like urine or feces. It's extremely important that you use these supervision and confinement procedures to minimize the number of accidents. Make plans for when you're away If you have to be away from home more than four or five hours a day, this may not be the best time for you to get a puppy. Instead, you may want to consider an older house-trained dog who can wait for your return. If you already have a puppy and must be away for long periods of time, you may need to: Arrange for someone, such as a responsible neighbor or a professional pet sitter, to take them for bathroom breaks. Alternatively, train them to eliminate in a specific place indoors. Be aware, however, that doing this can prolong the process of house training. Teaching your puppy to eliminate on newspaper may create a life-long surface preference, meaning that even as an adult they may eliminate on any newspaper lying around the living room. If you plan to paper-train, confine them to an area with enough room for a sleeping space, a playing space and a separate place to eliminate. In the designated elimination area, use either pet pee pads, newspapers cover the area with several layers of newspaper or a sod box. To make a sod box, place sod in a container such as a child's small, plastic swimming pool. You can also find dog litter products at a pet supply store. If you have to clean up an accident outside the designated elimination area, put the soiled rags or paper towels inside that area afterward to help your puppy recognize the scented area as the place where they are supposed to eliminate. We all know cats are typically the fur family members to use a litter box. But what about dogs? Are there any good arguments for litter box training your canine friend? A dog litter box? Or an artificial grass pad? So I rarely advise pet parents to skip this opportunity. That said, there are a few instances when using a dog litter box is preferable. Is it right for your dog? This is especially true if you have a small dog, or tiny tinkler as I call them, since they often have more difficulty holding their urine than bigger dogs. This leads to more accidents in the house and bigger frustrations, which puts a damper on your relationship. I wrote an entirely different article that goes into more detail about why your dog is peeing in the house. But if you live in an area that sees several feet of snow or is primarily paved and gets very hot, an indoor dog litter box might actually be safer for your pet. You or Your Dog Have Mobility Issues If you or your dog have mobility issues, dog litter box training might be a good idea. Some companies, like doggybathroom. All you need to do is change out the pads and keep the inside clean. This can be a good option for medium-sized dogs that raise their leg to pee. The downside is the cost. The pee pads are disposable and will need to be replaced frequently. If you want to use dog litter, the sides of the litter box should be low enough for your dog to easily step over but high enough to contain the litter. Now what about artificial grass pads? The initial investment for a grass pad like this one is minimal. Can Dogs Use Cat Litter? Yes, technically, dogs can use cat litter. However, cat litter can be harmful if ingested, which is a risk since our canine friends are known to eat strange things from time to time. Dog litter typically consists of larger, more absorbent pellets, which are safer if ingested. Some are also made with recycled material, like wood or paper. Pin me! Whether you choose a litter box or a grass pad, will your dog really use it? This is the million doggie bone question. Can pet parents actually get their pups to use a dog litter box? In many cases, the answer is yes, you can. Trying to contain a Bull Mastiff in a box while they do their business would be quite a feat! And large dogs tend to raise their leg to pee, so the sides of the dog litter box would have to be very high to avoid soaking surrounding objects. Step 1: Find the Right Spot When house training dogs, we usually bring them outside. Do this by getting a paper towel or pee pad containing a little of their urine and placing it where you want them to go. Step 3: Praise Them for Using the Right Spot Again, just as you would do if training a dog to go outside, be sure to give them lots of praise and some training treats when they do their business in the right spot. But with time, your dog will understand how to use their new pee spot. And of course, you want your home to be sanitary. Here at Parsons Place Stable, all our puppies are litter box trained. We start the puppies on newspaper around 3wks old, then by 4wks we offer a litter box or area with shavings or pellets, the puppies naturally figure out how to use it. In our whelping rooms the puppies have access to a doggy door, which goes out directly into a litter box. Dogs by natural instinct typically do not wish to eliminate themselves where they sleep, so the puppies go out the door and use the box. But, by the time the puppies are 8wks old, they have got it down almost perfectly! The main key to litter box training for puppies, is to keep their space very small. There should only be room for thier bed, food dishes and 1 or 2 litter boxes. As they get better their space is allowed to get larger. We recommend the puppies using a litter box after they go to their new homes. Puppies have no bladder control until after they are 16wks old. They typically need to go out to relieve themselves every hour. If you are like me.This is where the litter box training comes in really handy! If you can set up your puppies home space with a litter box, you will not have to worry as much about if they need to go potty. I have found no issues with housebreaking after using the litter boxes. We still take our puppies outside to potty as often as we can, this way they still get rewarded for using the bathroom outside. This is our whelping room. It is heated and cooled as needed. Each room has a doggy door that opens to the outside, for the mother to get a break from the puppies or as the puppies get older, a place for them to go potty. This is a view from the outside of the whelping room. These puppies are now old enough to go in and out and use the potty in their shavings. On many occasions, once the puppies are weaned we will move the puppies - to our new kennel. Here if the weather is bad outside, the puppies will learn to go only in thier litter box. This room is plenty large enough for the puppies to get lots of playtime outside of their kennel but not have to go outside in the cold. They also get TONS of visitors and attention from all our riding lesson families! Once you take your new puppy home, we recommend you set up something like this. In our home we use a 48" crate with a litter box and a dog bed. This way the puppy can still use the potty even if I can not get him outside. This not only keeps the bed clean, but gives your puppy something to lay on. As you see Pazley loves it up there! Keep the side height around or under 6 inches. If you have a very small puppy you may wish to cut a doorway into the box, as shown above in our crate. Please take your new puppy outside to potty as much as possible and reward them Greatly when they go!! Please feel free to call me with any questions!! Pin It Dogs have been living side by side with people since people were still nomadic. It seems equally unsurprising that studies have recently shown that dogs, on the whole, prefer women to men. Our modern lives have taken us out of caves, given us rabies vaccines, the 19th Amendment and introduced some new problems. Work hours are long. The night is dark. Weather can be inclement. Be that as it may, litter training works best for small breed dogs and puppies. The idea of a Great Dane using a litter box is comical but also a logistical nightmare if you think about it. The first option is the most obvious: a conventional litter box. A dog box is bigger than a cat box, has higher sides and no top. Most dog litter is made of recycled newspaper but there are also clay options. Next up is the pee pad holder. They have plastic undersides and are absorbent to soak up and contain any urine. They are designed for use during housebreaking and were meant to replace the tradition of puppies peeing on newspapers. The problem? Dogs love to shred them and scatter the bits through the house like gross confetti. I think my dog could figure it out. He loves puzzles. Plastic grate-style litter boxes will be the first one I try next time I have a puppy. When your puppy needs to use the loo they just hop up and do what they came to do. The solid waste stays on top of the grate so you can pick it up and do whatever you do with poop. Personally, I flush it. The urine goes down into the shallow box where it is absorbed by either a pee pad or litter, depending on the model. One of the more high-tech offerings is Fresh Patch, which made its debut on Shark Tank and is hydroponically grown grass in a box. Hydroponic means it was grown without dirt. No dirt means no digging. Your dog is supposed to pee and poop in it until the grass gives up the ghost and dies. Then you throw the whole biodegradable mess away. Dogs love it. It can get pricey depending on how often you replace the grass and the size of your dog. If you have one dog, the grass needs replaced every two to three weeks. The price is based on the size of the box, which is based on the size of your dog. Can you put a price on not stepping in a puddle? There are also synthetic grass options that you wash and reuse instead of tossing and replacing, which is more economical. Watch for signs the puppy needs to go, such as sniffing or beginning to squat. Puppies should be taken potty once an hour for the first week; then gradually increase the length of time between potty times. The puppy should also be taken potty 15 minutes after every meal until he starts taking himself. When this happens, praise your puppy like he just discovered gold in your backyard. A high-value treat helps, too. If your puppy has an accident, make sure you clean it with something designed to clean up pet urine, though, or this will be a recurring problem. Yelling at the puppy, rubbing his nose in the accident or hitting the puppy will do nothing but confuse him. The most important part is to be consistent and patient.
