Prevalence: Common Pugs are members of the toy group despite their solid appearance. They range in height from 10 to 11 inches and in weight from 14 to 18 pounds six to eight kilograms. They are square dogs with substantial limbs. Pugs are the sturdiest dogs of the toy group, befitting their mastiff heritage. Pugs are known for their large, round heads, with the shortened muzzles and extensive forehead wrinkles. The vertical wrinkle on the forehead is said to resemble the Chinese character for "prince" and thus known as the "prince mark. The tail curls tightly over the hip. They have a short, but very dense double coat. Colors can range from apricot to fawn, silver and black. All but the black dogs have a dark mask and ears with a trace of darkening down the back. The ears feel like black velvet. Personality: Pugs are not the lively socialites that some of the toy breeds are. They are a bit more serious, with a dry sense of humor. The breed motto is "multum in parvo," meaning a lot in a little, with plenty of dog in a small package. Pugs can be stubborn but normally want to please. These are fairly laid-back dogs, not usually given to extensive barking, digging or chewing. Pugs tend to get along well with other dogs and are sturdy enough to get along with children. They enjoy company and can be quite affectionate. True to their grouping, they are good companion dogs. Living With: Pugs are extremely easy to keep and have a serious tendency to become obese unless their diet and exercise are watched carefully. With the short muzzle, they do not do well in hot, humid weather and must be observed carefully for heatstroke. Pugs do tend to snore, again a result of the short muzzle. The prominent eyes are easily injured and care must be taken to keep them moist. Pugs are fairly robust and often live to 14 or 15 years of age. Pugs do best with some daily exercise to help with their weight problems. Despite their heroic alarm years ago, they are not usually great watchdogs, preferring instead to greet newcomers with a wagging tail. Pugs should be socialized to keep that outgoing temperament, and they do well with other pets. Grooming is important, both for the shedding from the dense coat and to keep facial wrinkles clean. A quick daily grooming, even a swipe with a hound mitt, usually suffices for the coat and a gentle wiping with a wet cloth for the face. History: While the pug is often associated with Holland, the breed originated in China, probably bred down from one of the local mastiff-type dogs. The little dogs with the round heads and expressive facial wrinkles were then transported to Holland via trading ships of the Dutch East India Company. In , a pug sounded the alarm that saved Prince William from the approaching Spanish soldiers, and the breed forever after was tied to the royal House of Orange. Napoleon's wife had a pet pug, and the duke and duchess of Windsor had a pug as a royal companion. Victorian England took on pugs as the latest rage in canine fashion and many pugs can be spotted in paintings of that era. The word "pug" may come from the Latin "pugnus" for fist, possibly describing the round face and head. The name does not fit the breed's temperament, because these are not really guard dogs, but designed first and foremost as companion dogs. Related Pet Care Articles. A bit goofy and rambunctious, pugs have also earned a reputation as a canine class clown. Pugs are ideal house dogs thanks to their stable temperament and loving disposition. Although you'll need a quality vacuum, as they shed profusely! Playful but not requiring lots of activity, pugs are content to do whatever their owner wants to do, whether that be watching a movie or going for a walk around the block. Very intelligent, and at times willful, pugs are happy and affectionate pups who remain very loyal to their owners. As a brachycephalic breed, that adorable smooshy face can also be the source of common health problems for pugs, which potential owners will want to understand before they choose to become pug parents. Pugs come in two standard colors with a few tonal variations: fawn with a black mask or all black. The fawn or tan coat color can range from a warm apricot to a cool and rarely seen silver. Their heads feature their signature short, flat, black muzzle covered with deep wrinkles. Their prominent eyes dominate their comical, wrinkly face and showcase a range of emotions, from surprise and happiness to curiosity. They sport moles on their cheeks, called "beauty spots" and a clearly defined "thumb mark" on their forehead. Their short coat is actually a double coat, and they shed like crazy, especially during the summer months. According to the AKC standard , the perfect pug tail has a double curl. Temperament A pug's favorite place to be is right by your side. Bred to be companions, they are completely content snuggling up on your lap and lounging the day away and aren't afraid to hop right into bed with you. But be forewarned: Pugs wheeze, snort, and snore so you may want to invest in some ear plugs. They will be quite unhappy—and will let you know it—if you don't shower them with affection or if you leave them alone for long periods of time. You shouldn't expect a pug to hunt, guard, or retrieve. A pug will have nothing to do with such activities. A funny little dog, pugs often find ways to create their own silly entertainment—but please for their sake pay attention to the show they are putting on—while maintaining a dignified manner when necessary. While they are a toy breed, pugs are a bit tougher than other similar-sized pups and are up for playtime. Avoid disappointment and make sure the kids know pugs aren't likely to play fetch or chase a soccer ball though. Pugs are pretty amenable to getting along with anyone, including other dogs, cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pugs also make great companions for those living in apartments and older individuals because they don't require too much indoor space for activity. We're not necessarily saying pugs are lazy, but they are known to sleep up to 14 hours per day! They also don't bark much because breathing is a bit difficult for them. Their breathing challenges combined with their short legs make them poor swimmers, too. Although they'd likely benefit from a dip in the pool on hot summer days, as they don't tolerate heat—or the cold—well. So be diligent in helping manage their intake—limit their treats and don't feed them table scraps no matter how cute and pleading their stare may be—because their small stature makes them likely to gain weight quickly. You should also encourage exercise, although they don't need much in a day. They find creative ways to burn off energy on their own. Bathing about once monthly and regular brushing with a medium-bristle brush, a rubber grooming mitt, or a hound glove help manage significant pug shedding. And those sweet facial wrinkles need extra attention because they are a breeding ground for infection if they are damp and dirty. Dry your pug's wrinkles thoroughly after bathing and wipe them out in between baths—a dry cotton ball will do the trick. Pugs also need their nails trimmed regularly, as they don't naturally wear by spending lots of time outdoors. Regular teeth brushing is a must as pugs are susceptible to gum disease. Training can be a challenge, Nichols says. Remember their ultimate goal is simply to spend time with you. If those surgeries are not done, expect a lifelong loud snoring dog. These are symptoms of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome BOAS , which can also cause saliva disorders, sleep issues, and difficulties with regurgitation. Pugs can face a fair amount of other health issues, including back problems, epilepsy, allergies, hemi-vertebrae or misshapen vertebrae , hip dysplasia , patellar luxation, and nerve degeneration later in life. A variety of skin conditions may affect pugs, including yeast infections, staph infections, or demodectic mange. While their big, dark eyes are adorable, they are especially vulnerable. Pugs sometimes face corneal ulcers, proptosis , and dry eye, among other ailments. Skin conditions such as walking dandruff—caused by a small mite—need to be treated by your veterinarian. Pug parents also need to watch that their pugs maintain a healthy weight; obesity can exacerbate their breathing problems. A study released in comparing the health of pugs to other dogs found "many critical health-related welfare challenges to overcome for pugs. Conversely, according to the study, pugs had significantly reduced adjusted odds of having heart murmur or lipoma tumors. One affliction unique to pugs is Pug Dog Encephalitis , afatal inflammatory brain disease. There is no known cause or test for it unfortunately. It causes a pug to seize, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. Research is ongoing. History Pugs are an ancient breed—perhaps the oldest dog breed, in fact—that originated in China. Going back some 2, years, flat-faced, or short-nosed toy dogs like the pug were popular with Chinese emperors and lived lavish lives because of it, the AKC says. They were only given to those outside the Far East as gifts. But in the s and early s, Dutch traders arrived in Europe with the breed and thanks to popularity with royal households they quickly gained popularity across Europe. Their long history reveals a number of different names for the breed including lo-sze Chinese , mopsi Finnish , doguillo Spanish , and mophonds Dutch , among others. The name pug is supposedly derived from the Latin word "pugnus"—which means "fist"—to reflect the fact that a pug's face looks like a clenched fist, the AKC writes. Pugs were also very popular during the Victorian era, featured on postcards, in paintings, and as figurines. For years they remained largely pets of the aristocracy. Queen Victoria had many pugs and bred them , and Marie Antoinette also had a pug named Mops. They were standardized as a breed in the early s. Upon taking over the Chinese Imperial Palace in , the English discovered several pugs and began breeding them back in England to improve the breed. It wasn't until after the Civil War that pugs came to the United States. The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Initially very popular, pug ownership and breeding waned until the s when the, the Pug Dog Club of America was created and recognized by the AKC. Fun Facts One legend says the pug became the mascot of Holland's royal House of Orange after a pug barked a warning to save the life of the Prince of Orange before an attack by Spanish troops, the AKC writes. They are average barkers not too quiet, not too much and make fairly good watchdogs. The biggest challenge to Pug care is probably their health needs, which are high. Grooming Guess what—Pugs shed! Black Pugs might shed a bit less than fawn-colored pups, but both shed year-round and not just in the fall and spring as with other breeds. Be sure to clean those wrinkles and skin folds every day with mild wipes to remove dander and accumulations; this will help prevent irritation and infections. If you see redness or swelling or smell an odor your pup may have an ear infection. Your vet can prescribe medication to clear it up. A bath about every month is also a good idea. Be sure to dry those delicious folds completely! Pugs need their nails trimmed every two to three weeks. Get the how-to here. If nails are left too long on older dogs, it can make it painful to walk. And be sure to talk with your vet for advice regarding dental health and the use of dental chews. Have your vet professionally clean their teeth every year. Regular dental care will help prevent serious issues later in their life. Pugs are people pleasers, so they want to do a good job for you. They are in the best position to help you pick the right food for your dog based on their individual needs. Exercise All dogs need appropriate exercise, and your Pug is no exception. Since Pugs are a brachycephalic breed flat-faced with a short nose , some may have a compromised airway caused by the extreme facial characteristics in their nostrils, palate, larynx and trachea. Instead, aim for shorter exercise sessions, broken up throughout the day. Pugs have pretty low energy levels, and their exercise needs are also fairly low; they typically need less than an hour of exercise every day. While some Pugs do enjoy doggy sports like agility, a short walk or fun indoor playtime will be plenty. Ideal Environment Pugs are wonderfully adaptable to many types of home settings and will be happy wherever you live. No problem for Pugs. Small homes? Big homes with room to roam? You bet! Country homes with huge backyards? Your Pug will love that too, although they may not need a yard of that size to be happy. Pugs are usually open to meeting strangers, even though they may bark to let you know your guests are here. Pugs really do prefer the indoors. Back to Top Pug Health Toy dog breeds tend to have longer lifespans than large dog breeds, and the Pug is no exception. Pug life expectancy is about 13 to 15 years. However, there are a few health issues you should be aware of, so you can help your pet stay healthy throughout their life. Eye Issues: Since Pugs have such prominent eyes, they are more prone to eye issues. Treatment usually consists of medicated eye drops. Weight reduction, physical therapy and surgery are options for treatment. Patellar Luxation: This is the condition where the knee slides out of the joint. In milder cases, pain medication and weight management are treatment options. Surgery is often needed in more severe cases. Pug Dog Encephalitis: This is an inflammatory brain disease and is fatal. Within a matter of weeks, a dog will experience seizures, circling, blindness, then coma and death. At this time, there is no known treatment for the disease, nor are experts sure how they get it. Skin Issues: Keeping your Pug clean helps minimize skin issues. In particular, the skin folds require special attention to avoid irritation and infections. Ear Infections: Those floppy ears are cute, but they may harbor infections. Check their ears every day and gently wipe away any debris. Signs of infection include redness, swelling or a bad odor. Your vet can prescribe medicated ear solutions to get rid of an infection. Allergies: Pugs can be affected by skin allergies. These can be caused by something in the food they eat or their environment pollen, mold, etc. Thankfully, your vet can treat allergies with either dietary changes or medications, depending on the cause. Back to Top Pug History The history of the Pug dates back thousands of years and spans multiple continents. But their not so humble origins began as the beloved companions of Chinese emperors , and they were highly prized and valued for centuries. Some Pugs even had their own guards! By around the s, Pugs began to travel abroad, and they arrived in Europe, where they became quite popular with royalty in Holland. Over in England, Queen Victoria was said to be especially fond of the breed; she shared her home with as many as 38 Pugs. They may be small dogs, but they pack a lot of personality into their small size! The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in , but the popularity of the Pug breed in America declined somewhat around the turn of the 20th century. Today, the Pug enjoys steady popularity, currently ranking 28th of the most popular dog breeds in the US. You can also reach out to Pug rescue organizations to adopt a Pug or keep an eye out for the breed at your local animal shelter. Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. Socialization helps ensure that your Pug puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling him in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking him to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbors will also help him polish his social skills. Health clearances prove that a dog has been tested for and cleared of a particular condition. You can confirm health clearances by checking the OFA web site offa. Cheyletiella Dermatitis Walking Dandruff : This is a skin condition that is caused by a small mite. If you see heavy dandruff, especially down the middle of the back, contact your vet. The mites that cause this condition are contagious, which means all pets in the household need to treated. A diagnosis of PDE can only be made by testing the brain tissue of the dog after it dies. PDE usually affects young dogs, causing them to seizure, circle, become blind, then fall into a coma and die. This can happen in a few days or weeks. They are prone to a condition called idiopathic epilepsy : seizures for no known reason. If your Pug has seizures, take him to your vet to determine what treatment is appropriate. Nerve Degeneration : Older Pugs that drag their rear, stagger, have trouble jumping up or down, or become incontinent may be suffering from nerve degeneration. Since their front legs often remain strong, some owners buy carts to help their Pugs get around, and the veterinarian might be able to prescribe medication to help alleviate symptoms. If your Pug squints or the eyes look red and tear excessively, contact your vet immediately. Corneal ulcers usually respond well to medication, but if left untreated, can cause blindness or even rupture the eye. Dry Eye : Keratoconjunctivitis sicca and pigmentary keratitis are two conditions seen in Pugs. They can occur at the same time, or individually. Your vet can perform tests to determine if this is the cause, which can be controlled with medication and special care. Pigmentary keratits is a condition that causes black spots on the cornea, especially in the corner near the nose. If the pigment covers the eye, it can cause blindness. Your vet can prescribe medication that will help keep the eyes moist and dissolve the pigment. Both of these eye conditions require life-long therapy and care. Eye Problems : Because their large eyes bulge, Pugs are prone to a variety of eye problems, including proptosis the eyeball is dislodged from the eye socket and the eyelid clamps behind it ; distichiasis an abnormal growth of eyelashes on the margin of the eye, resulting in the eyelashes rubbing against the eye ; progressive retinal atrophy a degenerative disease of the retinal visual cells that leads to blindness ; and entropion the eyelid, usually the lower lid, rolls inward, causing the hair on the lid to rub on the eye and irritate it. Allergies : Some Pugs suffer from a variety of allergies , ranging from contact to food allergies. If your Pug is licking at his paws or rubbing his face a great deal, suspect allergy and have him checked by your vet. Demodectic Mange : Also called demodicosis, all dogs carry a little passenger called a demodex mite. The mother dog passes this mite to her pups in their first few days of life. If your Pug has a weakened or compromised immune system, however, it can develop demodectic mange. Demodectic mange can be localized or generalized. In the localized form, patches of red, scaly, skin with hair loss appears on the head, neck and forelegs. Even so, you should take your dog to the vet because it can turn into the generalized form of demodectic mange. Generalized demodectic mange covers the entire body and affects older puppies and young adult dogs. The dog develops patchy skin, bald spots, and skin infections all over the body. The American Academy of Veterinary Dermatology recommends neutering or spaying all dogs that develop generalized demodectic mange because there is a genetic link. Staph Infection : Staph bacteria is commonly found on skin, but some dogs will develop pimples and infected hair follicles if their immune systems are stressed. The lesions can look like hives where there is hair; on areas without hair, the lesions can look like ringworm. You should contact your vet for appropriate treatment. Yeast Infection : If your Pug smells bad, is itchy and has blackened, thickened skin, he may have a yeast infection. It commonly affects the armpits, feet, groin, neck, and inside the ears. Your vet can prescribe medications to clear this up. Hemi-vertebrae : Short-nosed breeds, such as Pugs, Bulldogs and French Bulldogs, can have misshaped vertebrae. Sometimes, only a few of the vertebrae are affected and the dog is able to live a normal life. Others will stagger and display an uncoordinated, weak gait between 4 and 6 months of age. Some dogs get progressively worse and may even become paralyzed. The cause of the condition is unknown. Surgery can help. Hip Dysplasia : This malady affects small breeds as well as large breeds, including Pugs. Many factors, including genetics, environment and diet, are thought to contribute to this deformity of the hip joint. Affected Pugs are usually able to lead normal, healthy lives with proper veterinary attention. Legg-Perthes Disease : This is another disease involving the hip joint. Many toy breeds are prone to this condition. When your Pug has Legg-Perthes, the blood supply to the head of the femur the large rear leg bone is decreased, and the head of the femur that connects to the pelvis begins to disintegrate. Usually, the first signs of Legg-Perthes, limping and atrophy of the leg muscle, occur when puppies are 4 to 6 months old. The scar tissue that results from the surgery creates a false joint and the puppy is usually pain free. Patellar Luxation : The patella is the kneecap. Luxation means dislocation of an anatomical part as a bone at a joint. Patellar luxation is when the knee joint often of a hind leg slides in and out of place, causing pain. This can be crippling, but many dogs lead relatively normal lives with this condition. Vaccination Sensitivity : There are reports of Pugs suffering from sensitivity to routine vaccinations. Usually, symptoms include hives, facial swelling, soreness and lethargy. A dog that is sensitive to vaccines can develop complications or die, though this is rare. Watch your Pug carefully for a few hours after being vaccinated and call the vet if you notice anything unusual. Pug Care Though playful and rambunctious, the Pug is a low-maintenance companion, making it ideal for older owners. Because they are a small, quiet breed and are relatively inactive when indoors, they are a good choice for apartment dwellers as well. Light sleepers may also want to invest in a pair of ear plugs — Pugs are prone to snore. How much your adult dog eats depends on his size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. These dogs love to eat, eat, eat. This, combined with their small stature, puts them at risk for obesity. As a Pug owner, you must show great restraint. Do not indulge him with food. Feed appropriate portions , limit treats and encourage exercise. For more on feeding your Pug, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Pugs are typically fawn-colored or black. The fawn color can have different tints, such as apricot or silver, and all Pugs have a short, flat, black muzzle. Pugs shed like crazy, especially in summer. The wise Pug owner accepts this, and adjusts her wardrobe accordingly, wearing light-colored clothing that better hides hair. Following that, regular brushing and bathing helps keep the coat in good condition and shedding to a minimum. A monthly bath is sufficient, though some owners bathe their Pugs more frequently. These folds are hotbeds for infection if allowed to become damp or dirty. The wrinkles must be dried thoroughly after bathing, and wiped out in-between baths. Some owners simply use a dry cotton ball; others use commercial baby wipes to wipe out the folds. Because they protrude, the eyes are vulnerable to injury and irritation from soaps and chemicals. Like many small breeds, the Pug can be susceptible to gum disease. Regular brushing with a small, soft toothbrush and doggie toothpaste helps prevent this. Handle his paws frequently — dogs are touchy about their feet — and look inside his mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Though small, the Pug is not delicate like some toy breeds, so he is a good breed choice for families with children. However, children who want an active pet to retrieve balls or play soccer will be disappointed with a Pug. Adults should always supervise interactions between children and pets. Properly trained and socialized , the Pug enjoys the companionship of dogs , and can be trusted with cats, rabbits, and other animals. Pug Rescue Groups Pugs are often purchased without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. There are many Pugs in need of adoption and or fostering. There are a number of rescues that we have not listed. Pug Dog Behavior Overview Every dog is an individual and will have his or her own quirks and character traits. And when it comes to lovable behaviors and even temperament, the Pug places high on the list. This section will discuss what you can expect with the Pug dog and tips for owners to deal with some of the more, well, let's just say, "interesting" aspects of this breed. Most owners will agree that the Pug knows what he wants. And he'll use a few different techniques to see if his owner will cave in. For the right owner, this is not necessarily a bad thing. In many cases, what the dog wants is attention. Can who can blame him! This is not an independent breed. Zeke Photo courtesy of owner Virginia Vaughn Zeke Photo courtesy of owner Virginia Vaughn Throughout generations, the Pug was bred to be a very valued companion and for quite a while this breed was kept by royalty. Pugs were even dressed up in clothing mostly ruffled shirts and pantaloons to sit at the front of horse-drawn carriages. He was put on display and revered. Statues were built and artists spent time paining portraits of this unique breed. Being a brachycephalic breed, the Pug was never extensively used for hunting and was only briefly used as a guard dog. Throughout history and up until today, Pugs have been and are indoor companion dogs. They crave the company of their humans. What will a Pug do? It's not uncommon for his to plant his feet down and refuse to go outside with you.He may try and make you work for it a bit. If you are both resting on the sofa, he's sprawled half across your body and you want to get up to get a drink, your Pug may groan a bit and make you roll him off. Most of his behaviors will be amusing, if you have a good sense of humor and if you are the type of owner who wants a dog with tons of personality. Hard to Train? Pugs are no harder to train than any other dog and most do excellent with both housebreaking and commands. It is important to note that any type of training is not accomplished in a day or even in a week. The 2 elements that will help you train your Pug will be ones that compliment and play off of his personality. You'll need to work a bit to keep him focused and you'll need to follow proper guidelines in regard to praise and reward. In some aspects, a Pug dog does better than some other breeds simply because his desire to please his human and his love of tasty treats makes for a motivated dog. There may be some quirks that make certain elements in need of extra attention. The Pug's easy going temperament and somewhat clingy personality can cause the dog to suffer with Separation Anxiety having a difficult time staying calm when left home alone. Taking time to prepare a really good indoor environment can help quite a bit. Adding isolation to the problem of feeling panicked when left alone only compounds matters. For this reason most Pugs do well with a good sized indoor gated off area that is set up in a main room of the house. The living room or kitchen are good choices. There should be space for toys and chews , a water dispenser, a food bowl, a comfortable sleeping area and a spot with newspaper or pee pads for bathroom needs. You can read more about this in the House Training section Begging Pugs do tend to have begging behaviors. If an owner gives in to this during the first year of puppy-hood, it can set up a foundation of begging behavior down the road. It is really difficult to not give in to those "puppy dog eyes" however, setting up rules and guidelines, with feeding in particular, lends to better health. While some "human" foods are perfectly fine for a canine to consume, it is the manner in which a dog is given that food that will either reinforce or discourage the begging. While home cooking for this breed is highly recommended, any food given off of an owner's plate is not a good idea. Once a dog is given any morsel, he will repeat the begging behavior again. A dog metaphorically thinks, "If I begged and received, surely all I need to do is keep up this behavior and I'm sure to eventually receive a treat again! Once this is learned, a Pug will obey commands, listen to the word "No" and show better manners. Meals should be scheduled, and a Pug should be commanded to sit before his bowl is placed down. Treats and snacks should be reserved for training and once a Pug is fully trained, snacks can be reserved for reinforcing good behavior. Note: If a Pug always seems hungry without good reason, reassess the quality of meals and snacks. Worms and other health issues can cause increased appetite, so bring this to the attention of the vet if you cannot resolve this. Chewing Chewing is usually a behavior that is triggered by something as opposed to being an inbred trait or part of a dog's personality. Teething certainly brings strong urges to chew and boredom or anxiety also causes a dog to chew. For teething, offering ice cubes either plain or flavored can help to sooth sore gums. Chilling teething toys in the freezer can also help. Be sure to choose sturdy ones with different textures that promote good dental hygiene and healthy teeth. During this brief phase that all puppies go through, keeping personal items out of reach can prevent the destruction of shoes, pocketbooks, wallets, etc. Keeping a close eye on a teething puppy allows an owner to quickly stop undesirable behavior: Clap your hands to get the pup's attention, take away any object that is not a toy and offer a good chew toy instead, offering praise as the puppy mouths it. Temperament with Other Dogs The Pug generally gets along well with other dogs. Some can be skittish of larger dogs and some will engage full force to be the life of the party. It is rare for a Pug dog to be overly dominant to any other animal and his friendly nature may make him vulnerable to large, more aggressive canines. When out at dog parks or if visiting friends who have pets, it is always a good idea to keep watch. Puppies, in particular, are very inquisitive, sometimes charging ahead into a situation in which they are not prepared. The Pug is by no means shy or submissive to all other dogs, it is more a matter of this breed being a bit more curious and friendly as opposed to what may be other somewhat serious dogs. With Children This breed usually gets along very well with kids of all ages. In a household with younger children who may tend to get rowdy and noisy, it can be helpful to have an area set up in advance, that a Pug dog can retreat to if he is feeling overwhelmed. Often, this can just be a dog bed or other resting area, set back a bit in a quiet corner of a main room. Even though the puppy or dog may want to take a break, he will still want to be able to see and hear his humans, therefore placing him in a separate room is usually not a good idea. Tank St. Bernard and Pugsly 20 weeks old Photo courtesy of the Caywood Family Mimicking One of the best personalty traits of the Pug dog breed is his tendency to mimic his owners. Always aiming to please, a Pug will tend to be more laid back or more outgoing, depending on his owner's nature and habits. This is a learned behavior and it can change over time. This breed is very adaptable, as long as his basic needs are met and he is in a healthy environment. Energy Levels Puppies will be more independent, exploring to find out the answer to "what is this? It is normal for Pug puppies to scamper around, sliding on floors and sniffing at just about everything. It is also normal for pups to mouth objects, since that is one of their main methods of exploration and learning. For this reason, homes should be periodically "puppy proofed", removing any and all small objects off the floor and placed out of reach. An adult will be more relaxed, often content to sit beside or on his owner in front of the TV. One or two 15 to 20 minute walks per day will help to keep this dog healthy. They tend to pick up cues from their humans and then follow along, so an owner should take the initiative to take breaks and never push the dog to go beyond what he can handle Sensitivity This breed is sensitive to his environment and to those around him. In regard to environment, not only does he physically react to temperature he may shiver in a cold house and have trouble breathing in a hot, humid house and how comfortable or not his living quarters are, he also does best in low-key, positive atmosphere. In regard to the interaction he has with his owners, Pugs are rather sensitive to harsh words and tone of voice. How you discipline your Pug will have lasting consequences in both how well he listens and how he reacts to you. If a Pug his yelled at, he can emotionally back away and it can take quite some time for his hurt feelings to mend. Pugs should be rewarded for good behavior, not punished for misdeeds. Without tons of non-judgmental love, this breed can become emotionally withdrawn. While it is recommended to speak in a confident, firm voice when training, be sure to show enthusiasm for things done right and respectful correction for misbehavior. Just about every resource lists one of the Pug dog's traits as being "comical", but what does this mean? Sometimes, the dog is just being a dog, but his appearance can make normal behaviors seem amusing. Other times, it is a matter of a Pug wanting attention. In this regard, command and trick training is often successful, since a Pug will crave those "good boys" or "good girls", a happy pat and a yummy treat. One element to keep in mind, is that even though this breed is known as a "joker", he is not always turned "on" and cannot be the entertainer all of the time. Just like any other pet, a Pug needs downtime to rest and relax. Punk 7 months old Photo courtesy of owner: Miranda Kuney Noises Many, but not all, do exhibit some rather amusing noises. If you are seeking a quiet dog, the Pug may not be the best choice. The most common noises are: burps, flatulence, snorts and snores. Most of this is expected and normal, however if your dog has a sudden or severe increase in breathing related noises, a veterinarian checkup is recommended. Since snores can be quite loud, some owners find it helpful to obtain a white noise machine which can muffle out night time snores. As a Whole This is a well-rounded breed, good in just about any sized household and most certainly a close canine companion that is loyal and extremely friendly. Pugs love to play, learn and be part of the family. Good with other pets, including cats, the Pug is a true family dog. Sometimes wary of strangers, if an owner has regular visitors to the home, they will be accepted over time as long as the Pug does not feel excluded. Most have a very deep bond with their owners, wanting to sleep in their human's bed. Since this is the largest of all toy sized breeds, an adult can take up a good amount of room and may snore in his owner's ear, but will be much happier than if left in another room. This breed does best when the following is offered: A well rounded, healthy diet of wholesome foods A good selection of interactive toys Treated with affection, respect and tolerance A warm, comfortable place to sleep that encourages a feeling of safety and security Plenty of interaction with family members, not having any prolonged periods of isolation Kept inside, except when outside with owners during non-severe weather conditions to exercise and play Brought for regular check-ups with an experienced and reputable veterinarian preferably with previous or current Pug patients , including dental care This is a perfect dog to have for singles or a family who can offer an inside environment with daily outside bursts of activity. Please remember that this breed is not an outside dog. A Pug should never be left outdoors, unattended, for any amount of time. If you are a sucker for a cute face with wrinkles , a dog that shows emotions and an affectionate companion this breed is for you. All rights reserved. Check out our dog feeding guidelines for more information. Proper nutrition along with care can contribute to a Pug lifespan reaching 15 years. Grooming Pugs The Pug grooming process is fairly easy as their coat is low maintenance, requiring a quick brush once a week. However, the wrinkles over the dog's nose will need to be cleaned daily, and the ears and eyes will also need to be checked every day. They should be taught to walk on a lead and harness — as well as learn a reliable recall — not that they generally wander far from their beloved owners! Are Pugs Good Family Dogs? Pugs make great family dogs and are ideal for those with children. Although they should avoid boisterous games, as their eyes can be prone to injury, and their breathing restrictions prohibit too much running around, especially in the heat. While many dogs are traditionally thought of as being good with children, all dogs and children need to be taught to get on with and respect each other, and be safe together. Even so, dogs and young children should never be left alone together and adults should supervise all interactions between them. He proved so popular that the character was expanded in the sequel made in , by which time Mashu was seven years old and needed make up to cover his grey hairs! They are one of the most irresponsibly bred and puppy-farmed breeds, leading to a huge increase in health problems. Not everyone loves Pugs however. While Josephine, wife of Napoleon, adored her Pug called Fortune, and insisted they slept in her bed, her husband was not so enamoured. He hated all dogs from then on and was convinced they brought him bad luck. The German word for Pug is Mops. A group of Pugs is called a grumble. FAQs Can a Pug be left alone? Do Pugs bark a lot? Dog treats Dog crate Boxers are energetic and highly intelligent dogs. They strive for attention and love to please their owners. Although Boxers are quick learners, they tend to be stubborn when they do not want to do something. It is important to train Boxer puppies at an early age, as they can become hard to train and control. One of this first things you should do when you get your Boxer puppy home is to potty train it. Begin potty training when the Boxer puppies are at least 7 weeks old as they are now able to walk and learn. Make sure to start training as soon as possible. If you start potty training when the puppies are over 12 weeks of age, it will be more difficult for them to learn. They will have developed bad habits that will be hard to break. Choose a location in your yard where the Boxer puppy will go to the bathroom each time he goes outside. Always take the puppy to this one location when it is time to go potty. Do not confuse the puppy by taking him to a new location each time. Use the leash to lead the puppy to the location that you had chosen in Step 2. Stay in this area until the puppy has gone potty. Reward the puppy in this manner every time he has finished going to the bathroom. Create a consistent routine. Take the Boxer puppy outside to use the bathroom at the same times everyday. Putting the Boxer puppy on a regular feeding schedule will help you predict when the puppy needs to go potty. Repeat this process until the Boxer puppy is no longer going to the bathroom in the house. If you have a fenced-in yard, the puppy should be able to go to the bathroom on his own without a leash. This can take several weeks or more to accomplish. Tips It is important that you stay consistent with your training. Apply these steps in the exact same manner each time. Your puppy will learn much faster because puppies learn by repetition. If you do or say something different each time you take your puppy out to potty, you will confuse him. Watch for signs from your puppy that he needs to go to the bathroom. If your puppy is sniffing around, circling, whimpering or scratching at the door, he probably needs to go out. It is recommended that you purchase a dog crate if you cannot supervise your Boxer at all times. Make sure you purchase a large enough crate to accommodate your Boxer. You will need to crate train your puppy to ensure that he will not go to the bathroom throughout your home. This does nothing to help your puppy learn faster. Punishing will only make the puppy afraid of you. Instead, ignore your puppy when he has an accident and clean the mess up right away. Be patient and keep rewarding your Boxer puppy whenever he goes to the bathroom outside. Boxer Dog House Training Overview Housebreaking your Boxer does not need to be a struggle of wits or will power between you and your dog. How do you properly house train a Boxer? By following 2 main rules: 1. Use a method that prevents your Boxer from eliminating inside the home. Provide and offer an area to relieve themselves that is both easily accessible and available when they need it. Keeping these 2 training rules in mind, housebreaking your Boxer can be done without stress or frustration. Rule 1 The goal is for your Boxer to not eliminate inside the house but how do you accomplish this? It is really easier than you might think. There are 2 basic methods. Watch them like a hawk - If you are lucky enough to be able to stay home with your Boxer until he or she is house trained, you can use the Umbilical Cord Training Method. If you are away during the day, default to this method any time that you are home and it can be reasonably incorporated. You will simply put a leash on your Boxer and tether the other end to you. You may connect it to your belt loop or around your wrist. The important element is that your Boxer will never be more than 6 feet away from you. With this method, you will take your Boxer puppy outside every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old and so on. The less a pup is allowed an opportunity to have an "accident" inside, the more successful the house training will be done. And we must remember that essentially there are no accidents. When nature calls, a puppy will urinate or eliminate where they are at that moment. Bladder and bowel muscles are not at full strength and the Boxer has little control in regard to holding needs. Therefore, it is the owner's job to make sure that their Boxer is outside in the bathroom area, at the time that the body calls for it. The other method is confinement by crating and is not recommended. For times that you cannot be right with your Boxer puppy , it is best to have him in a gated off area. If the room that you choose has carpeting, it is recommended to obtain a piece of linoleum, that will not be installed, it will simply be placed down. It's a good idea to keep the gate open when you are home, allowing your Boxer to check things out and even play, should he choose. It will allow him to get used to the area for times when you are not home. Do keep in mind that without full control over holding his needs, he must still be taken out at the times mentioned above. When you are not home, pee pads or paper can be placed down; however do not expect your puppy to learn 2 methods of housebreaking. The beneficial element is that it will be confined to one space easy to clean up and as the Boxer grows, he will be able to hold his needs for longer periods of time, with the end result being able to hold on for the 8 hours or so that owners are away for work. Rule 2 You must clearly show your Boxer where you expect him to go to the bathroom. If there are any doubts in your dog's mind about where he is supposed to eliminate this will make for one confused dog. And, it will most likely lead to that dog just giving up and going inside the home. Choose a spot that works well in all weather. What looks like a great location on a warm spring day may not work so great when your older, trained Boxer has to hike thorough a foot of snow to reach it in the winter. The area should be roughly 8 feet in diameter and used for nothing else but bathroom needs. If you want to play with your Boxer or do some outdoor command training , do this after he goes to the bathroom and in a separate location at least 15 feet from the bathroom area. The location that you choose as the main spot for your Boxer to use as a bathroom is vital. A dog will become very confused if you show them a new area each time you bring them outside. Just having the yard or "somewhere outside" is not specific enough and will impede progress. The 1 complaint that owners have in regard to housebreaking their puppy is that he or she urinates or eliminates right after coming back into the house. While this may just be a matter of the dog's body not having the need while outside, most of the time it is because an owner did not give the dog an opportunity to do so. Puppies need to sniff around - stand in the center of the chosen area - and with your Boxer on a 6 foot lead, allow him to sniff away any where within that diameter. As they are sniffing, their body is readying to push out a bowel movement and an owner must allow for enough time to go by for this to happen. The mistake occurs when an owner heads back in with their Boxer, only minutes before the dog is ready and that is when the dog eliminates seemingly right after entering back inside. As digested food moved through the intestinal tract, the puppy clenched bowel muscles in anticipation of being taken out. A pup needs 15 to 20 minutes to find just the "perfect" spot and to relax enough to do the deed. How to Begin Using the above Umbilical Cord Training Method Each time your puppy makes a motion that implies that they are about to eliminate, you must bring your dog outside to a designated area. In some cases, you may need to pick up your puppy and run to that spot - expect to do this several times, as even finishing in the designated bathroom area is preferred to not at all. Still give praise even if he only finished up there. Don't scold for what's been done inside, as again, the dog went to the bathroom in the area he was in at the time. Taken outside enough will stop this from happening - and don't worry, as your Boxer matures, he will be able to hold on for about 1 hour extra, for each month that he ages. As soon as your Boxer is done with their business, give tons of praise. A puppy has no idea that he did something right, unless it is conveyed to him via words and at times, additionally a treat. You do not need to give your dog a treat each time they "perform" good; but you should shower your Boxer with pats and tons of happy and excited words. Act as if your dog just did the best possible action in the world! A dog aims to please their owner; if you make your Boxer feel as if he did something extraordinarily wonderful, he or she will be prone to do it again. This does not need to be done forever. Once a dog performs enough repetitions of a certain action, it becomes habit. However, an occasional "good dog! Block off certain rooms that are not in use and use a gate to keep your Boxer on the level of the home where you are. If "allowed" to have accidents, they will continue to believe that they can go urinate or eliminate inside of the home. Even if you yell "NO! Be sure that it is large enough for the pup to: play, sleep, eat and go to the bathroom. Crating does not work when a dog is left home alone. Canines do not care to go to the bathroom in a confined space, but if left with no other choice, they will.Bring your Boxer out about 20 minutes before you leave. Bring him out as soon as you arrive back home. Don't scold for any messes that occurred while you were gone, it makes no sense to reprimand a dog for a natural bodily function. Leaving Your Boxer Outside There are several reasons why a Boxer of any age should not be sent out into the yard without supervision. The Boxer is among the top dog breeds that are stolen. Where are they taken from? Their own yards. A fence may keep other dogs out, but it will not keep out a thief intent on jumping over the fence to take your helpless puppy. Until a Boxer is old enough to scare off a thief, do not leave your puppy outside. In addition, outside elements such as the hot sun can quickly overheat a dog causing heat exhaustion, which ultimately leads to death if treatment is not given in enough time. Your Boxer puppy should be taken out many times during the day, given that he or she sleeps through the night: When they first wake up After each meal times a day Before bedtime A general guideline in house training a dog is that a 2 month old Boxer puppy can hold its needs for 2 hours, a 3 month old for 3 hours and so on. The maximum time that any dog should ever be expected to hold their needs is 8 hours and this is for a full grown adult canine. Taking steps to help your Boxer sleep through the night can also help to some extent. Keeping in mind that meals must be spaced apart from exercise to help prevent bloat , a good bout of cardio about 2 hours before bed may help a pup sleep better through the night.
Rottweilers In general, teacup and toy dogs, as well as short-muzzle breeds also known as brachycephalic breeds are more prone to cherry eye. Most affected dogs will have their first cherry eye appear under two years old, although the condition can occur in one or both eyes at any age. The condition is not contagious to people or other animals. Symptoms of cherry eye in dogs The main symptom of cherry eye in dogs is the swollen and protruding third eyelid resembling a cherry pit. In some cases, the eye itself will seem red, itchy, or swollen. Dogs with cherry eye may produce a thick mucus discharge from the eye. Other conditions, such as a foreign body, eye infections, or trauma to the eye, can also cause similar symptoms. Dogs with cherry eye may give themselves corneal scratches if their eye is itchy and they are scratching their face with their paws or objects around the house. Treatment for cherry eye in dogs Cherry eye is usually cured with surgery. However, in more severe cases where the dog has had the condition for a long time or the tear gland is no longer functional, or when the surgical replacement procedure described above has been done previously and has failed, the gland might need to be removed. The chances for full recovery are highest if the procedure is performed as soon as the condition occurs before the gland becomes enlarged or inflamed. If left untreated, cherry eye can cause eye infections and chronic dry eye also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca or KCS. However, the cost to treat cherry eye in dogs will depend on multiple factors, including how severely the eye is affected, the type of procedure, and the doctor performing it. Personal factors can also contribute to the cost of surgery. For instance, larger dogs require more anesthesia, which often results in an increase in price. If the condition has affected both eyes, the price will be higher. Pro Tip: Pet insurance can help cover the costs of medication and surgery for cherry eye. Recovery and prognosis After the surgery, your pet will need to wear a cone, also known as an Elizabethan collar or e-collar, to prevent them from rubbing their eye and disrupting the stitches. Vets usually also prescribe eye drops or medicated eye ointments, as well as oral antibiotics to keep the eye moist, prevent infections, and ensure that the eye heals properly. If the tear gland is surgically removed or if surgical treatment is not an option, your dog will likely need to use eye drops to keep the eye moist and healthy for the rest of their life. When it comes to recovery after surgery, the prognosis is very good. There might be inflammation for a week or two before the eye regains its normal appearance. Allow your dog to rest for a few days after the procedure and avoid swimming or bathing for about two weeks. It should be noted that dogs who are genetically predisposed to cherry eye are more likely to have a relapse. However, it is possible to prevent additional problems associated with this condition such as infections and dry eye by keeping the eye moist with adequate eye drops and treating any eye issues that may appear at the earliest opportunity. Key Takeaways Cherry eye, i. The condition can affect any dog but is especially common in toy and teacup breeds, as well as dogs with short muzzles. The list of breeds prone to cherry eye includes Pugs, Bulldogs, Bulldogs, Rottweilers, etc. Most dogs with cherry eye require surgery in order to put the gland back in place. Be sure to get in touch with your veterinarian as soon as possible if you think your four-legged friend has any eye problems, including cherry eye. Do you want to find the best pet insurance? Shop All Cat Food Believe it or not, all dogs possess a third eyelid at the inner corner of their eye. Also called the nictitans or nictitating membrane , as noted by the Merck Veterinary Manual , it serves as a kind of windshield wiper to help keep the cornea moist and free of debris. Cherry eye occurs when that third eyelid becomes displaced. If this applies to your pup, you'll want to know how to treat cherry eye in dogs. Let's take a closer look at this condition and what causes cherry eye in dogs. What Is a Cherry Eye? A "cherry eye" is what veterinarians also refer to as a prolapsed gland of the third eyelid. Every third eyelid contains a gland that resides in the deeper part of the membrane, anchored by a supporting flap of cartilage and hidden under the lower lid. Its job is to manufacture lubricating tears that provide moisture, along with other substances useful for the maintenance of a healthy cornea the clear structure that covers and protects the eye. The third eyelid's gland can become dislodged prolapsed from its normal location and consequently protrude into the inner corner of the eye. Instead of the typically flat, triangular structure observed in the corner of the eye, a small, bulbous, pink structure can be readily seen — hence the term "cherry eye. The cherry eye is distinctly bulbous and typically pink the color of a dog's mucous membranes. Another clue is that cherry eye is usually seen in young, growing dogs and seldom in adults. Causes of Cherry Eye in Dogs What causes cherry eye in dogs? What would make this normally hidden structure pop out of its spot? Is it the shape of the eye that's at fault or failure of the supporting structures? The answer isn't necessarily so simple, and several factors may be involved. The truth is that vets don't know exactly what causes cherry eye in dogs. However, we do know that cherry eye is a hereditary trait. This is why we assume that a variety of genes determining eye and eyelid conformation are likely involved. Though dogs of any breed can develop this eye condition, bulldogs, Boston terriers , pugs , shih tzus and other brachycephalic breeds short-headed, flat-nosed dogs are predisposed. In these dogs, the conformation of the eye, in which the eye's orbit is shallow and the eye protrudes in a "bug-eyed" manner, seems to be a factor in the development of this condition. How Cherry Eye Can Affect Dogs If untreated, dogs with cherry eye typically develop swelling and dryness of the exposed mucous membranes, which can become abraded, especially if a displaced gland of the third eyelid proves irritating to the dog and it usually does. The subsequent rubbing or pawing at the eye leads not just to further inflammation of cherry eye but also to conjunctivitis and even corneal injury, which can ultimately result in eye damage and vision loss. Another problem with cherry eyes is their tendency to cause damage to the tear gland itself. Once displaced, circulation is impeded and the gland fails to function properly. Dry eye requires lifelong medication and, what's more, is usually irreversible. How to Treat Cherry Eye Cherry eye is considered a highly treatable condition. The first step for treatment involves the careful replacement of the gland in its normal position along with anti-inflammatory medication to relieve swelling and discomfort. Definitive treatment often requires surgery. Visiting a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist is strongly recommended in this case. The surgical approach to cherry eye requires a careful incision into the eyelid margin over the gland, replacing the gland deeper into the orbit, then suturing the incision closed. An Elizabethan collar and medication will be required postoperatively. Dogs who manage to rub their eyes in spite of a collar may need sedatives, home crating or hospitalization so that they can properly heal. Follow-up surgery may be required depending on how your dog's eye heals. There's a great deal written about cherry eye prevention, especially for breeds predisposed to it. Although some vets suggest that routine use of artificial tears can keep the gland from becoming irritated and therefore keep it from becoming dislodged, there is no research to suggest this route of prevention is successful. The most effective approach to prevention requires breeders to consistently spay and neuter all dogs who develop cherry eye, thereby limiting the possibility of this genetic trait in any future offspring. If you still have questions about what causes cherry eye in dogs, talk to your local vet to learn more and determine the best way to prevent it. Contributor Bio Dr. Patty Khuly is an award-winning veterinarian known for her independent thinking, her spirited pet advocacy, her passion for the veterinary profession, and her famously irreverent pet health writing. Mastiffs Terriers In general, breeds with shorter muzzles many of whom have brachycephalic syndrome as well as toy breeds and teacup dogs tend to be more likely to experience cherry eye than their longer-nosed, full-sized counterparts. And young dogs—puppies under a year old—are most susceptible as well. Early cherry eye in dogs is fairly easy to spot, Vygantas says. This bulge is typically in the corner nearest the nose and similar in shape and color to a cherry pit, hence the nickname. The condition can occur in one or both eyes. The good news is early-stage cherry eye in dogs isn't painful. In fact, your pup probably won't even know something is wrong. But over time, it can make your dog prone to dry eye and infections , so it shouldn't be ignored. The tear gland in that third eyelid is responsible for about 33 to 66 percent of your dog's overall tear production. When prolapse occurs, the tear duct doesn't function normally. For healthy eyes and overall comfort, it's critical that this gland is preserved and reattached to its proper place. If you suspect your dog has cherry eye, it's important to see your vet as soon as possible. While not a medical emergency, the condition can cause health concerns over time. Left untreated, cherry eye can result in damage to the tear duct and cause chronic dry eye. The gland may also become more swollen over time and restrict blood flow. As swelling makes your dog more uncomfortable, he'll be tempted to scratch or paw at the eye, increasing the likelihood of damage and infection. At your initial vet visit, your veterinarian might prescribe dog-safe eye drops for cherry eye to reduce inflammation. These drops can also provide much-needed moisture for comfort and eye health. But eye drops are not a cure for cherry eye. Usually, the vet-recommended treatment for cherry eye in dogs is surgery to preserve the eyelid. Your vet should be able to preserve and correctly reposition the tear gland with a simple procedure. While it might be tempting to try and avoid surgery, when it comes to cherry eye, ointment and topical treatments won't address the root problem and your pup will likely need surgery later anyway. According to Vygantas, once the gland is out of position, it's unlikely to resolve itself without surgery. Still, even minor surgery can be stress-inducing as a pet owner. But rest assured: cherry eye surgery recovery is typically short and sweet. In fact, most pups are back to normal within a couple of weeks. In the meantime, your pup will have a follow-up appointment or two with her vet to check the surgical site. She'll also need to wear an e-collar aka the cone of shame during recovery to keep her eye safe from scratching, pawing, and infection. Cherry eye is not life-threatening, and the vast majority of dogs go on to live full lives with healthy eyes. If you're wondering if you should get a dog who has cherry eye—either from a rescue or a breeder—there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First, it's important to remember cherry eye is not contagious, so it poses no risk to you or other pets. However, surgical treatment of cherry eye can be expensive. Costs range from several hundred to thousands of dollars depending on the breed, your location, and your veterinarian's rates for surgical procedures. And, since as many as 45 percent of dogs that experience cherry eye in one eye will eventually have it in the other, you could very well end up doubling your expenses. The good news is, the simple cherry eye surgery should solve the problem for good. The most common complication of this surgery is the breakdown of the suture line and subsequent re-prolapse of the gland," Vygantas explains. If the suture does fail, another surgery is likely necessary. Still, Vygantas stresses that the condition is not an indicator of poor health or of other underlying conditions. If your pup has cherry eye, there's no reason she can't enjoy a long, happy, healthy life post-treatment. Is it Possible to Prevent Cherry Eye? Unfortunately, there's no way to keep your dog from developing cherry eye. But there are ways to give your pup the best chance at good health. Feed her a good diet and provide lots of exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure she stays up-to-date on all preventative care and vaccinations , and reach out to your vet if you have any concerns about your pup's eye health. All of this to confirm that, in fact, the English bulldog breed is the one for you and your family. What is cherry eye in Bulldogs? Basically, this third eyelid is a gland that comes out of place and dispositioned. As a result, you will notice a red or pink swollen mass. Unfortunately for those of us who love the breed, this is a common condition in English bulldogs as well as other brachiocephalic breeds. And it does not have anything to do with the quality of the puppy, bloodlines, or breeding practices. The cherry eye may look ugly on your English bulldog puppy. However, it is important for you to know that it does not cause any pain or discomfort to your bulldog puppy. Veterinarians and bulldog owners usually share two main common practices for this issue. Through this technique, the surgeon pushes the gland of the puppy back into place and secured with stitches. The second option is also a small surgery where they easily remove the gland that popped out of place. You may find controversy among the two different practices. This is because, in many cases, the gland will pop out again after the surgery. Not only resulting in extra discomfort for your puppy. It also results in making you lose what you have already paid the animal clinic. Some others will tell you that removing the gland is not such a good idea. We at WB English bulldogs have reached out to experienced veterinarians about their opinion on this. On most cases, they will rather take the second option. This is where the surgeon removes the gland to avoid any future complications. This is a minor surgery, but it is important that the veterinarian performing it has enough knowledge. Can you recommend a veterinarian? We will be happy to provide you with veterinarian recommendation with reasonable fees. For those of you out of state, we do recommend doing your research on honest and reputable veterinarians. Or veterinarian clinics familiar and knowledgeable about the English bulldog breed. It is important to find a business who will not only care for your pet, but also provide you with fair pricing. Share this post.

Baron and Brandi have lived in a home prior to MOGS, but were mainly outdoor dogs, so need an owner who can be patient and teach them good indoor dog manners. Baron is somewhat more shy and requires measured intros to both people and other dogs. Once Alma knows and trusts a person, she is super-loving, attention-seeking, and wants to be with them every minute that she can. She is very food motivated, really smart, and wants to please [most of the time ]. She is working on basic obedience, but like a true GSD, can be stubborn. She is housebroken, crate-trained and can be left unsupervised for brief periods of time in the home, as long as her person is home as well. Alma is a true alpha, dominant female with other dogs, and can sometimes be very intense. She can be an only-pet, but has also done with in small play groups with submissive, younger males and females. She cannot be placed with other dominant dogs, and has a small-prey drive, so no cats. She can sometimes be kennel reactive when she is crated and hassled by another dog that she doesn't like in her current foster home [dominant temperament male]. Posie is typically a gentle girl with her handlers in boarding, with a soft mouth for treats, and an affectionate, cuddly personality. Posie does have a high small prey drive, and cannot be around either small dogs or cats. She does struggle with some issues of selective reactivity, and would prefer to be in an only pet home. If he knows you he will want your attention and he will bug you until you give it to him. He wants to be a lap dog as well. Colby is a happy boy, he just wants to enjoy his home and all the thing he loves, food, his ball, his Buffalo horns, and hanging with his people. Because he is tentative with new people and dogs, he would not be a good candidate for dog parks, doggy day care, Home Depot visits or camping. Colby needs a home with no cats, but he has been in a household with a small dog and did very well. The goal is to show your dog that all people and pets should be engaged with calmly and respectfully. This is a very dominant breed and so you should take the time to socialize it early to avoid that behavior as much as possible. Socialization will help the dog develop an even temper. This is an important part of raising an American Bulldog. Without socialization, your new dog may be suspicious of all new people and animals, which can lead to unwanted behaviors, such as biting. You can socialize your dog by taking it to public areas and allowing it to have positive experiences with new people and pets. If at a dog park, slowly introduce your dog to the other dogs and people around you while still on the leash. If your dog seems to be friendly, comfortable, and welcomes the interaction, praise it for its good behavior and gradually allow more interaction off-leash and in larger areas. If visiting a breeder to pick out a pup, there are some specific things to look for that can indicate socialization has already begun. Observe how the puppy interacts with its littermates as well as its parents. A shy, withdrawn, or overly cautious pup is probably not well socialized and has not been exposed to a lot of different situations. Remember that when you get a dog you want to avoid bad breeding situations, for example puppy mills. Not only do unethical breeders have inhumane conditions for their dogs and usually inbreed them, but they do not do the early training and socializing of their dogs that is imperative to raising a well-adjusted dog. Each dog will develop their social skills at their own speed, so go as slow as needed. As your dog becomes more socialized and comfortable with new things, you will see that it develops an overall better temperament. Don't forget to introduce cats, children, and anything else that you want your dog to be familiar and comfortable with as well. Take your introductions slow! When introducing your dog to a cat, don't let the animals see each other right off the bat. Keep them in separate rooms and allow them to smell each other under the closed door. After they get used to each other's smell, let them see each other from a distance. Over several days let them get closer to each other on a regular basis, all while keeping a hold of both. Also, know that in some areas there are legal liabilities related to owning this particular breed. There have also been cases of homeowner insurance policies being denied and the breed is actually banned from ownership in some areas. Research the situation in your area before committing to this breed. American Bulldogs are a very intelligent, strong-willed, and frequently stubborn breed. This can make them a challenge to train, especially for first-time dog owners. They will need to know that you are the dominant one in the relationship and training them will require a lot of dedication and patience. It will be beneficial for you and your new pup to train with voice commands as well as hand signals. The upside to training with both of these commands is that if you are in a situation where your dog can't hear you, they can still see what you are asking them to do and can react accordingly. Giving your dog treats or praise when it does something right will help reinforce the behavior. Positive reinforcement goes a long way with this breed, as they enjoy pleasing their owners. Since this breed loves attention from the people that they are bonded with, ignoring your dog when they exhibit bad behavior will work better than other disciplinary measures. When trained and socialized well, American Bulldogs have the tools they need to judge a situation and decide when everything is OK or when they may need to act on their natural guarding instincts. During any sort of training, if you feel overwhelmed or your dog doesn't seem to be learning at a reasonable pace, consult a professional. They will be able to answer any questions or concerns you may be having about the process or techniques that you are using. Before you get an American bulldog, consider how to care for one. Your routine should work with your schedule, but also consider that American bulldogs will need to be active. The routine should include plenty of time to let your dog run around. Provide Regular Exercise As mentioned, American Bulldogs are very active dogs, so they need time to get out their energy. A great way to do this is to take your dog on a long walk each day. You can play with the dog, or you can let them be on their own. There are plenty of exercise toys that are tough enough for bulldogs as well. If your friend has a dog, they can bring the dog to help with socialization. And if not, you can take your dog to a dog park or enroll in a socialization or training class. Give your dog time to interact with other dogs and people, even if you live alone. Then, you can make sure your dog will do well if you pass someone on a walk. Stock Up on Toys If you have to leave your dog for a long time, such as for work, you should have plenty of toys. Some toys to get for your dog include: Ropes Balls Anything your dog can chew on That way, your dog can entertain themselves through the day. The space can be in your backyard, but you should also have room in your home. Give your dog a special spot for their food and water so that they can get to it easily. You may also want to choose a spot without anything valuable. But you should still brush the dog at least once a week to keep their shedding under control. And when you brush your dog, take special care with their wrinkles. That way, you can keep bacteria from building up in those areas. Like the wrinkles in their skin, their ears can have bacteria buildup, which can lead to infections. It also gives you an excuse to see if there are any signs of a problem. If so, you can take your dog to the vet to resolve the issue. Here is our step by step guide on cleaning their ears. Give Regular Baths Another monthly task to help care for an American Bulldog is to give the dog a bath. However, baths are necessary for keeping bacteria from building up on your dog. Trim Their Claws Before or after bathing your dog, you should take the time to trim their claws. That way, you can keep the claws from getting too long. Then, your dog can continue to play and be happy and healthy. These dogs need to eat a lot of protein to support their muscular build and athletic life. This goes for all bulldogs. For tips on how to know how much protein, carbohydrates and fats to feed your American bulldog, read on guide on what to feed a bulldog. Look for food with meat protein as the main ingredient, and consider getting food with omega-3 fatty acids. Keep the carbs low to help your dog maintain a healthy weight. American Bulldogs can develop allergies, so check on those before trying a new food. Visit the Vet Regular vet visits are also helpful in caring for an American Bulldog. You should take your dog to the vet at least once per year, but you can visit more if your dog has problems. The vet can check for symptoms and run tests to detect certain conditions. American Bulldogs are at risk of hip or elbow dysplasia, allergies, and other disorders. Going to the vet each year can help you identify and treat any problems before they become severe. When going through a breeder , ask for a health guarantee to make sure the dog is currently healthy, as well as the mother and the stud. But you can use this information to create a plan of action to help care for your American Bulldog. But there are special considerations, such as allergies or other health issues. Post Views: .If you neglect your American bulldog or fail to give your dog the proper attention and support its needs, this will affect its behavior and even make them more aggressive. Take a look at these tips for taking care of your lovely pet. Provide proper diet American bulldogs are the kind of breed that do not really need special diets, but they are the ones who need the proper amount of food to grow healthy. The best advice is to provide your dog with the right amount of food by watching the weight of the animal and feeding it once a day or every other day, adding some snacks to the food. It should always have access to freshwater, since it is the one that keeps the animal hydrated. When considering food for your bulldog, the best food for this breed is the ones that give the dog the most energy, meaning that the food used should be made of the best ingredients providing the animal with the most nutrients possible. If you are in doubt about the food you are buying, check the labels carefully to make sure that there is no added artificial flavor or harmful preservatives. They are very active, energetic, and high-energy dogs that require a lot of mental stimulation as well as physical exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Providing the right amount of exercise is the most important factor in ensuring that you are properly caring for your American bulldog. The best way to provide the right amount of exercise is to take the dog for a walk every day of the week. On the days you do not go for a walk, play with the dog in the yard or the house. If they have been properly exercised when they are puppies, American bulldogs can be less energetic when they get older and may only need an hour or two of exercise per day instead of the full amount. Another thing that you must do if you want your American bulldog to be well-socialized is to make sure that the people who handle it are friendly and gentle. This means not allowing friends and family members who may be hostile towards dogs into your house and also not allowing just anyone to interact with your American Bulldog. Still, you should use a leash whenever it is outside because there are people who may try to antagonize your dog if they know that it is leashed. If your bulldog bites someone while on a leash, this would be considered self-defense by law. Most American Bulldogs also love the company of other dogs. If you live in a neighborhood where there are a lot of people and their dogs around, then letting your dog run free without a leash is probably not such a bad idea. Of course, this does depend on how well your dog can control its impulses and respond to your commands. For the American bulldog, there are a few health checks that pet owners should regularly do. The first of these is checking for ear infections. Also, check for ticks and fleas, as well as scratching or irritability that can indicate parasites. Another health check to run on your bulldog is making sure they have a healthy weight. Overweight Bulldogs are more likely to suffer from several different diseases such as diabetes and arthritis. Make sure to weigh them regularly and adjust their diet accordingly. In conclusion, it is important to properly take care of an American bulldog if you want them to be healthy and happy. The most important part of this is making sure that they are exercised sufficiently and socialized with the right people and dogs. This also includes running regular health checks on them to make sure that they are safe and healthy. Related Reading. They can keep going for ages, require plenty of exercise and can be very strong. However, being aware of it is important so you can limit the amount that you lose. A good thing to do is to invest in some chew toys that the puppy can specifically use to chew on, mitigating the risk of having your other possessions chewed on. These toys should be non toxic and you must make sure that the puppy will not choke on it. Otherwise it can be very simple. Make sure your puppy gets plenty of exercise We already mentioned that American Bulldogs need a lot of exercise. When the pup is really young he will probably get enough exercise anyway for his size. A short walk should tire him out. However, when the puppy gets older more walks will be needed. Further, all exercise should be monitored and supervised. It allows you to have a good look at him and for him to get used to you. Check the skin, coat, eyes, ears, teeth and tail. The nails may need trimming from time to time. This is an easy thing to learn how to do. The breeder who sold you the dog should be able to advise on how much and how often to feed the puppy. You should continue with the type of food that your puppy has had before gradually weaning it on to the food that you want to give it. Avoid any uncooked meat. It is vital in the early stages that your puppy does not eat anything bad. This could affect its development. Avoid bones at an early stage as they could splinter and hurt your puppy. Healthcare Most American Bulldogs will live long and happy lives as long as their owner looks after them well. Your vet will be able to advise you when it comes to getting the right vaccinations and how often you should get boosters for these. As with people general good healthcare, exercise and good food will prevent illness. Related Articles. They are a medium-sized dog; they are stout and strong and muscular. Exercise Because bulldogs are medium-sized dogs, they can be comfortable living in a house and even an apartment, with little room to roam inside, however, they will require exercise outside of the home on a regular basis. Playing games with bulldogs also helps to keep their minds sharp and active. Dog parks are perfect places for your bulldog to play. He will benefit by getting exercise as well as socializing with other dogs and people. Bulldogs tend to especially love children, so by socializing your puppy to kids of all ages starting from puppyhood, you will be nurturing that natural, sweet nature in them that they have for children. Once they bond with children in the home, they tend to be protective of them in, which is a plus, for many bulldog owners. Groom your bulldog Bulldogs do not require a whole lot of grooming, but they do shed some. Unlike other breeds that need regular baths, bulldogs do not, unless dirty. Chaffing or dirt that can be cleaned out with a damp rag. Your bulldog should get regular dental care. Getting regular, annual physicals by your vet can help ensure your bulldog is in good health as well monitor your pet for any changes that may be happening as he gets older. Regular vet checks is one way to help prevent health conditions from starting or becoming a bigger issue. Plenty of chew toys Most all dogs need to chew; it is their nature. Chewing serves several purposes: when your bulldog is a puppy, chew toys and bones help your pup get through his teething stage. Like human babies, they need to be able to chew to deal with pain and discomfort, as well as it helps loose baby teeth to fall out. When a dog feels nervous or anxious, or bored, they will be more tempted to pick up a shoe or chew on a piece of furniture if they do not have plenty of their own toys to chew on. Create a space just for them Dogs want to feel secure and comfortable. If they do not have their own space they can go to, to rest, sleep, or escape from a storm or noises, they become anxious and nervous. Your bulldog should have his own designated, comfortable space he knows he can retreat to anytime he wants or needs to. Give him a comfortable dog bed that is just his size where he can find toys nearby, maybe a blanket that is all his, he can curl up with. If you crate your bulldog, make it comfortable for him inside so that he knows he can go in freely to rest and retreat whenever he wants. The American Bulldog was first bred as a powerful and athletic all-purpose working dog, used to catch hogs and cattle. They are typically gentle and loving family companions, but may not tolerate other dogs, especially those of the same sex. They require early training and socialization and have a high energy level. American Bulldogs are generally healthy with an average lifespan of years. That is why we have summarized the health concerns we will be discussing with you over the life of your Bulldog. By knowing about health concerns specific to American Bulldogs, we can tailor a preventive health plan to watch for and hopefully prevent some predictable risks. That does not mean your dog will have these problems; it just means that she is more at risk than other dogs. We will describe the most common issues seen in American Bulldogs to give you an idea of what may come up in her future. This guide contains general health information important to all canines as well as the most important genetic predispositions for American Bulldogs. At the end of the article, we have also included a description of what you can do at home to keep your AmBull looking and feeling her best. And unfortunately, your American Bulldog is more likely than other dogs to have problems with her teeth. It starts with tartar build-up on the teeth and progresses to infection of the gums and roots of the teeth. Infections American Bulldogs are susceptible to bacterial and viral infections — the same ones that all dogs can get — such as parvo, rabies, and distemper. Many of these infections are preventable through vaccination , which we will recommend based on the diseases we see in our area, her age, and other factors. Obesity Obesity can be a significant health problem in American Bulldogs. It is a serious disease that may cause or worsen joint problems, metabolic and digestive disorders, back pain and heart disease. Instead, give her a hug, brush her fur or teeth, play a game with her, or perhaps take her for a walk. Everything from fleas and ticks to ear mites can infest her skin and ears. Hookworms, roundworms, heartworms , and whipworms can get into her system in a number of ways: drinking unclean water, walking on contaminated soil, or being bitten by an infected mosquito. Some of these parasites can be transmitted to you or a family member and are a serious concern for everyone. Spay or Neuter One of the best things you can do for your Bulldog is to have her spayed neutered for males. In females, this means we surgically remove the ovaries and usually the uterus, and in males, it means we surgically remove the testicles. Spaying or neutering decreases the likelihood of certain types of cancers and eliminates the possibility of your pet becoming pregnant or fathering unwanted puppies. Performing this surgery also gives us a chance, while your pet is under anesthesia, to identify and address some of the diseases your dog is likely to develop. For example, if your pet needs hip X-rays or a puppy tooth extracted, this would be a good time. This is convenient for you and easy for your friend. Routine blood testing prior to surgery also helps us to identify and take precautions for common problems that increase anesthetic or surgical risk. Genetic Predispositions for American Bulldogs Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Both hips and elbows are at risk for dysplasia, an inherited disease that causes the joints to develop improperly and results in arthritis. You may notice that he begins to show lameness in his legs or has difficulty getting up from lying down. We can treat the arthritis—the sooner the better—to minimize discomfort and pain. Surgery is sometimes a good option in severe and life-limiting cases. Keep in mind that overweight dogs may develop arthritis years earlier than those of normal weight, causing undue pain and suffering! Clinical signs usually appear in younger dogs, between around one to three years of age. In the early stages, rear leg weakness and imbalance can occur. It can progress to weakness involving all four legs, and some dogs also lose vision. There is currently no effective treatment for this disease, but a genetic test is available. Dogs carrying the mutation should not be used for breeding since it is readily passed to future generations. Signs can include dry skin and coat, hair loss, susceptibility to other skin diseases, weight gain, fearfulness, aggression, or other behavioral changes. Treatment is usually simple: replacement hormones given in the form of a pill. Ichthyosis Dry, flaky, itchy skin is a common problem for many dogs, but AmBulls, in particular, are prone to a severe flaking skin condition called ichthyosis. Named for the large dry flakes that resemble fish scales, this problem usually arises very early in life, with most affected puppies born with abnormal skin. Several palliative treatment options like special shampoos and fish oils give variable levels of relief, but there is no definitive cure for this inherited disease. There is a genetic test available for many breeds that can determine whether he is clear, a carrier, or affected. This is important information if you are planning to use your friend for breeding, as it is not recommended to breed dogs who are affected or carriers; the goal is to prevent this debilitating disease in future generations. Eyelid Abnormality Entropion is a condition where the eyelid rolls inward, causing the eyelashes to rub against the cornea surface of the eyeball. This is an extremely irritating and painful condition that can ultimately lead to blindness. It can happen in any dog breed; however, your Bulldog is especially at risk for this heritable disorder. Surgical correction is usually successful if performed early. Bladder or Kidney Stones There are a few different types of stones that can form in the kidney or in the bladder, and American Bulldogs are more likely to develop them than other breeds. Call us immediately! Taking Care of Your American Bulldog at Home Much of what you can do to keep your dog happy and healthy is common sense, just like it is for people. Be sure to adhere to the schedule of examinations and vaccinations that we recommend for her. Another very important step in caring for your pet is signing up for pet health insurance. There will certainly be medical tests and procedures she will need throughout her life and pet health insurance will help you cover those costs. Routine Care, Diet, and Exercise Build her routine care into your schedule to help your AmBull live longer, stay healthier, and be happier during her lifetime. We cannot overemphasize the importance of a proper diet and exercise routine. Supervise your pet as you would a toddler. Keep doors closed, pick up after yourself, and block off rooms as necessary. Very easy to groom, her short coat requires only occassional brushing. Clean her nasal folds at least weekly. Clean her ears weekly, even as a puppy. She has a high prey drive, so she needs to be leash walked and a sturdy fence is a must. American Bulldogs love to be with their family and they are adaptable to many living situations as long as they are given adequate exercise. Feed a high-quality diet appropriate for her age. What to Watch For Any abnormal symptom could be a sign of serious disease, or it could just be a minor or temporary problem. The important thing is to be able to tell when to seek veterinary help, and how urgently. Many diseases cause dogs to have a characteristic combination of symptoms, which together can be a clear signal that your American Bulldog needs help. Office Calls Give us a call at for an appointment if you notice any of these types of signs: Change in appetite or water consumption Tartar build-up, bad breath, red gums, or broken teeth Itchy skin scratching, chewing or licking , hair loss Lethargy, mental dullness, or excessive sleeping Fearfulness, aggression, or other behavioral changes Dull coat, hair loss, sluggish, weight gain Dry, scaly, sometimes itchy hairless patches on face or paws Emergencies Seek medical care immediately if you notice any of these types of signs: Scratching or shaking the head, tender ears, or ear discharge Inability or straining to urinate; discolored urine Cloudiness, redness, itching, or any other abnormality involving the eyes General reluctance to run or play Loud breathing, tires easily at exercise. Low History of the American Bulldog English bulldogs were originally used for bull baiting in 17th century England, a gruesome sport involving dogs fighting bulls. The practice has since been eliminated, and bulldogs dazzled their way into the lives of families across England even becoming a national symbol. English bulldogs were brought to North America to use their strength and determination as farm dogs. Farmers bred them with other working dogs to get the best all-around breed for their specific jobs. Their intelligence, loyalty, and agility made them helpful for both herding and hunting. Thanks to two determined breeders, John D. Johnson and Alan Scott, these dogs were repopulated and went on to become the popular companions they are today. As the breed developed, American bulldogs were known as friendly pets that were a must for families across North America. Their intimidating looks and strength made them a great breed to represent competitive sports teams. Bulldog baseball mascot, May .In the grooming department, these short-haired dogs don't require much aside from basic care. Exercise American bulldogs do best with at least an hour of exercise per day, which owners can provide through daily walks or playing in the yard. Along with helping your dog maintain its health and a suitable weight, exercise is a great way to keep this breed mentally stimulated. Without enough exercise, American bulldogs are prone to find their own entertainment—which can lead to destructive behaviors like chewing on furniture or getting into off-limits items at home. This breed is best suited for active families that enjoy plenty of playtime with their dogs. Your American bulldog will be happy to join you on walks, runs, hikes, and games like fetch or tug-of-war. These dogs typically enjoy grooming, and weekly brushing will significantly help owners manage shedding. Though their coat is relatively low-maintenance, American bulldogs are known to have issues with excess drool. Their slobber is natural; just be sure to keep any wrinkles free from excess moisture to avoid bacteria buildup or infections. Like other dogs, American bulldogs require regular baths, nail trimming, and ear cleaning. Their nails should be trimmed every few weeks to avoid overgrowth and pain, while ears should be cleaned as needed to prevent infections. Training Consistent training is a must for this breed. American bulldogs are naturally protective sometimes to a fault , but they do love to learn. Training your dog in basic obedience can begin as early as six to eight weeks of age, and socialization is necessary once puppies have received the necessary vaccines to be safe in public. American bulldogs can need a helping hand when it comes to acceptable behavior around strangers and other animals. This will help your dog become a friendly companion and avoid unnecessary aggression. Since these dogs do best with love and attention from their owners, they also respond very well to positive reinforcement methods. Offer treats, affection, and playtime as rewards for desired behavior. Training should be consistent and ongoing throughout the dog's life. Responsible breeders will test prospective parent dogs before breeding to avoid passing these problems down to puppies. The following are conditions to be aware of with this breed: Elbow and Hip Dysplasia : Common in large dog breeds, dysplasia is caused by a malformation in the dog's joints as they age. Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis: This hereditary disorder affects your dog's central nervous system. Genetic tests can determine whether this disease is present in specific bloodlines. Allergies : American bulldogs can develop allergies caused by an overactive immune system. While many puppies grow out of it, these symptoms are manageable in older dogs. Your veterinarian may recommend a food allergy test if symptoms like redness, itchy skin, or licking paws are present. Avoid overfeeding to prevent unnecessary weight gain , which can cause joint issues. Your veterinarian may also recommend omega-3 fatty acids for joint health. Along with maintaining the proper nutrients, it's important to be aware of any food allergies your dog may have if they struggle with red, itchy skin. Talk to your veterinarian to determine a suitable diet and portion sizes for your dog based on their age, weight, activity level, and specific medical needs. Allergy tests provide the most definitive results, but owners can also slowly switch between different protein options to find the best results. Where to Adopt or Buy an American Bulldog American bulldogs are a popular breed in many regions of the United States, so finding this breed shouldn't be a major challenge for prospective adopters. Check your local shelters to meet American bulldogs in need of forever homes in your area, or reach out to breed-specific rescues to meet a variety of dogs. If you're set on starting with a puppy, it's essential to research responsible breeders before adopting. Always ask for a health guarantee and the litter's family medical history. The right breeder should also allow you to meet the litter's parents and see the conditions in which their dogs are kept. To start your search, check out these resources for breed-specific rescues, the national breed club, and the AKC:.

The beagle Lab mix dog is a designer breed, developed by crossing a purebred Labrador retriever and a purebred beagle. This mix goes by several names, including beagador, labbe, labbe retriever, and labeagle. While both parent breeds are officially recognized by the American Kennel Club, the beagador is considered a designer dog breed. While some Labrador beagle mix dogs are a perfect blend of their parent breeds, others take more after one parent than the other. Keeping that in mind, there are a few things you can expect to see in your mix in terms of size and coat. Size As an offspring of a beagle and Labrador retriever, your Lab beagle mix will likely be a medium-sized dog. Most labbe retrievers are between 19 and 24 inches high at withers and weigh between 30 and 80 pounds when fully grown. Color There are three officially recognized Labrador colors — yellow , black, and chocolate. However, the beagle has 25 possible color combinations and can come in a variety of colors, including tan, brown, white, lemon, blue, black, red, fawn, bluetick, and redtick. Like all other double-coated breeds, your labeagle is going to shed moderately all year round and lose even more hair during the shedding season. Beagle Lab Dog Character There is no way of guessing the exact personality and temperament of any mixed-breed dog, including the beagle Lab dog. People-loving and affectionate, this mix makes a great family dog and gets along nicely with children who know how to play and interact with a dog. Before you welcome a beagle and Lab mix into your home, know that these dogs are very social creatures that crave attention and companionship. When not provided with the affection and attention they need, labbes can develop behavioral problems and turn to digging and howling. Beagadors need up to one hour of vigorous exercise every day, and they generally enjoy all sorts of activities. Jogging, hiking, swimming, and cycling are just a few of many things you can do with your dog to keep them exercised. A word of caution though — make sure you are using a leash while out and about with your mix. Beagles are scent hounds, and your mix will likely inherit a strong urge to sniff and chase after new scents. These dogs thrive and are the happiest when included in all family activities. If you have a fenced backyard, let your dog out to run, play, and sniff new scents for as long as they want to. Intellectual Stimulation Besides being highly energetic, labbe retrievers are also very smart and can get bored without proper mental stimulation. And when they are bored, lebbes are also destructive and will resort to chewing, digging, and howling just to have some fun. Companionship Beagadors are social and people-loving dogs that like to be involved in all family activities. They are best suited for larger families or homes that are never empty, meaning your dog will rarely, if ever, stay home alone. They crave attention and companionship and can easily develop behavioral issues when left alone at home. Grooming The beagle Labrador mix is a low-maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. When it comes to bathing, bathe your beagador once every two months or as needed using a mild dog shampoo. Diet The ideal diet for the Labrador beagle mix should be formulated for medium-sized dogs with high energy. Please note, like their parent breeds, beagadors tend to overeat and can easily pack on the extra pounds and become obese. The Labrador beagle mix is generally healthy, but they can inherit the same health problems that are seen in their parent breeds. These include: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia: This condition is commonly seen in Labs and is characterized by malformation of the hip and elbow joints. Both of these conditions are extremely painful for the dog and can lead to arthritis, mobility issues, and lameness. Epilepsy: This is a neurological condition and the most common cause of seizures in dogs. Epilepsy is an inherited disorder that is commonly seen in beagles. Cherry Eye: This is another condition that is more often diagnosed in beagles than Labs. Life Expectancy The Lab beagle mix has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. However, with proper care and regular veterinary checkups, beagadors can live longer and reach senior years completely healthy. Training a beagador might go either way, depending on which parent your pup takes more after. Most Labrador beagle mix dogs are highly intelligent and eager-to-please, just like their Lab parents. To keep your pooch interested in learning and training, use positive reinforcement, and always give your dog a reward when they follow your command. Reward-based training has been proven as the most effective training method and will give results even if your mix is too headstrong for its own good. Besides training, you should also start socializing your mix from an early age. Start exposing your beagador to different people, situations, places, and scents after they receive all the necessary vaccines. This way, your dog will get used to interacting with other people and animals from a young age and grow up into a friendly and outgoing dog. The Lab beagle mix makes a great pet and companion to active people and families with children. But, if you are active, spend most of your time outdoors, and have a fenced backyard the beagador might just be the perfect dog for you! As always, talk with the breeder first and schedule an appointment to meet the puppy and the mother. They will also be able to provide health certificates for the puppies and the parents that show their dogs are completely healthy. The exact price of the puppy will depend on the breeder, your location, lineage, and supply and demand. History Of The Breeds Beagle The beagle is a small breed of scent hound, primarily developed to track and hunt small game, mostly rabbits and hare. While beagles are still used by hunters as scent hounds, they also make wonderful family pets and companions. Labrador Retriever The Labrador retriever originated in Newfoundland, where it was originally used by fishermen to retrieve fish. The breed was later brought to England where it was developed into a hard worker and companion we know today. Eager-to-please, friendly, loyal, and kind are just a few of many traits that make Labradors universally loved and extremely popular. Labrador retrievers make amazing family companions and pets and are also used as search and rescue dogs and service dogs. Lab beagle mixes make wonderful family pets to active people or families with children. They are social, playful, and energetic dogs that like to be involved in all family activities and spend time with their owners. Keep in mind that beagadors can easily become bored and destructive if not properly exercised. How much do beagadors cost? Keep in mind that this is the average cost and you might end up spending more depending on the breeder, your location, and supply and demand for Labrador beagle mix puppies. Do beagadors like swimming? Depending on which parent breed it takes after more, your Lab beagle mix might enjoy swimming. If your beagador is anything like their Labrador retriever parent, they will love to swim in the water. Conclusion The increasingly popular beagle Lab mix makes a great companion and family pet to active people and families with children. Medium in size, easy to groom, and generally healthy, beagadors are suited for novice and experienced owners alike. Before you welcome a Labrador beagle mix into your home, make sure you can: Keep your dog exercised and mentally stimulated Have a fenced backyard for your mix to play in Have enough free time to interact and play with your beagador every day Do you have a Beagle Lab Mix? A Beagador puppy should grow into a medium-sized, chunky adult although there can be some variation. At the opposite end of the spectrum are the show type Labs - big, chunky dogs that carry far more weight. These Labs can top the scales at a hefty 80 lbs 36 kg at adulthood, while also reaching a not too shabby .In contrast, if you have ever seen a pack of Beagles you will understand that they are far more uniform in size. This medium-sized hound reaches an adult weight of around lbs kg , with a maximum height of 15 inches 38 cm. Your best bet is to look at the parents, especially the Lab side of the equation. As a rough estimate, they are likely to range from between inches tall 61 cm with a weight range of lbs 11 - 20 kg ; making them a medium-sized dog. Despite this, remember that there are no guarantees when producing a cross and there can often be a wide variation between a single litter of puppies! When buying a puppy, ensure that both parents have still been health tested. Major problems for the Labrador and Beagle include hip dysplasia and degenerative eye conditions ; both of which are hereditary. This means that the problem can be passed down from the parents to the puppies. The American Kennel Club provides a list of health checks that breeders should adhere to, ask the breeder to see the relevant paperwork before you buy. It is easy to get carried away when faced with a litter of adorable puppies, but problems such as hip dysplasia can cause your little bundle of fluff a world of pain when they mature and could result in them needing surgery. At the end of the day, always ensure your little Labbe puppy has been bred not just for looks, but also health and temperament too. How easy will a Beagle Lab mix be to train? The Labbeagle is a mix of two very different types of dog. On the one hand, you have the Labrador; a powerful, agile gundog that was historically bred to spend the whole day out in the field retrieving game shot by his owner. They are used to being exceptionally obedient , responding to commands in an instant. In contrast to this is the Beagle who needed to be capable of independent working, using their exceptional sense of smell to track prey and hunt it down with little input from people. With such variation between the two parents, your Labbe puppies personality can be a little unpredictable! You may have a pup that enjoys learning and in some respects is easy to train. Yet be prepared that you might also have a puppy that develops selective deafness should something more exciting come along! A Labbe puppy and adult can often have a mind of their own, something a new owner should be prepared for. Of course, this situation can be mitigated by ensuring your puppy attends training classes as soon as their vaccines have been completed. Not only will they learn to respond to commands amid distractions, but it also provides a safe environment for them to socialize with other dogs. Otherwise, you could find they take you hunting for the day! They can be incredibly vocal! Cats especially will soon make a break for it and if your Beagador decides to give chase, not only could they hurt the cat but they could also hurt themselves if they run into a road. Their coat might be short, but be prepared for them to shed lots of hair Both the Beagle and Labrador have short, no-nonsense coats suitable for an active working dog. However, do not be deceived by this. Although short, your Beagle Lab is likely to shed lots of hair, particularly when the seasons change. Not only will this help keep your home cleaner but it can also help cut down on the hoovering! Both breeds have been bred to work well with people, and this easygoing nature ensures that as long as the children are well behaved, your dog will be too. Cuddle time is a winner with this mix, and they are also exceptionally loyal. Of course, it is important to remember that this temperament will come from you puppies parents too, so again make sure you meet them before you buy. If this sounds like your sort of dog, do not get a Labbeagle! This breed has a strong working instinct gained from both its parents, resulting in a dog that needs not only physical exercise but mental stimulation too. If these needs are not met, the result can be a noisy, destructive dog capable of doing some serious furniture damage when you are away from home. Try to avoid leaving your Beagle Lab mix for more than a few hours at a time. I would aim for two decent walks a day one hour each ; this is the bare minimum that they should receive. This will ensure that they can stretch their legs, meet other doggy friends and have a good sniff around to work that fantastic nose of theirs. This regular exercise will also ensure that they avoid becoming overweight. By ensuring they have plenty of free running time, you will keep off the pounds. An obese dog is not only at risk from weight-related diseases such as diabetes and arthritis, but ultimately they will have a shorter lifespan too. Conclusion If your idea of a dream dog is a loving sofa companion that will also enjoy spending several hours each day galavanting around the countryside with you, then a Labrador-Beagle mix could be the dog for you. Just remember to put in the hours with the training in the early days, and you will be rewarded with a well-mannered pet in the long run. Own a Labbe already? Thinking of getting one? Let us know in the comments below! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. They are an absolute joy to hang around with, and their funny behavior will often make everyone laugh. With proper training, they get along well with people and can live peacefully with other animals. The Labbe Retrievers get easily bored when they are left alone too long. This might encourage them to look for ways of amusing themselves, inducing unwanted activities like digging and howling. These playful pets tend to grab things with their mouths just for fun. To keep them from doing this, they should be trained at a young age, preferably when weeks old. Being naturally inquisitive, the Lab and Beagle mix dogs like to sniff and inspect things around. An interesting smell might urge them to wander off. They also exhibit a fair amount of confidence and fearlessness when confronting with an intruder. Thus, they can also be used for watching and guarding. Care Exercise To work off its excess energy, a matured Beagador needs daily activities. It enjoys going for leashed walks with its owner. Since it is prone to obesity, do not allow it to become lazy. Jogging and brisk running across a well-fenced yard will keep it physically fit and active. It can also be kept busy by playing games of fetch. This will remove its loose hairs and stimulate new hair growth. Do not bathe it frequently unless it is extremely smelly and dirty. Make sure that you check its dropped ears every two weeks for infections. If it does not wear its nails down naturally, trim them times a month. When it comes to its dental care, use a vet recommended toothpaste to brush its teeth twice or thrice a week. Health Problems Beagadors may suffer from the health conditions that are common in its parent breeds including bone disorders like hip dysplasia and patellar luxation; eye disease such as Progressive Retinal Atrophy, glaucoma, and cataracts; and bacterial infections of the skin and ears. Training The Labeagles will require an expert hand to help them learn all the basic etiquette of living in a family. Start socialization and house-training early. When training the puppies, always stick to positive reinforcement techniques. You can use a tasty treat to handle an unruly or rambunctious pet. Feeding If they get the opportunity, these food-loving dogs can eat all day. Dry kibble is an essential dietary component, but you should keep the daily amount between 1. The breed is a people pleaser that is why it will do anything for the people it loves, making it easier to train. Although there are times that the breed can be a little stubborn and hard to teach. First time trainers might have a hard time teaching the dogs some tricks. Here are some tips by which you can effectively train your dog: Crate Training. It can be a way to keep your new dog safe and prevent them from excessive chewing. It also helps with their potty training and is a great way to manage the safety and well-being of the puppies. Remember that the crates should be large enough for the adult dog to stand, sit, and stretch out. Obedience Training. This is one of the most essential and necessary trainings for any dog. The obedience training comes from the five core commands which are the come, sit, stay, heel, and down. Most beagle mixes are sweet-tempered and get along well with different dogs and cats. Socialisation is essential to train your dog to become outgoing and confident. Remember that like every breed, the beagle lab mix must undergo training in its early stages. Positive reinforcement is also considered effective and impactful in training. Beagle mixed with Labrador and Families There are a few things to consider before buying this hybrid. Both its parent breeds are energetic and intelligent, so they might need additional room to grow and play, especially if it inherits the size of its Labrador Retriever parent. There will also be a time that you will need to invest much money and time in positive reinforcement. The natural curiosity and inquisitiveness of its parent breeds may result in the hybrid excessively wandering off, so you might need to invest in an excellent fenced-in yard. Beagle Lab hybrids are also great as a family pet for people who have kids of all ages. The hybrid tends to be loyal and patient to its family and can get along well even with the other dogs and house pets. If you find that these factors are enough, then maybe a Lab Beagle cross is the right puppy for you and your family. Breeders often breed these two dogs in the hopes of getting Beagador puppies with black fur, or mostly black fur. A Beagador with a black Lab parent is a medium to large dog. They are intelligent, loving, and full of energy. These mixed breed dogs best suit homes that are very active, and where they are not left alone. Are you getting ready to bring one home? Or are you just wondering if this breed will suit your family? What is a Black Lab Beagle Mix? A black Lab Beagle mix is the same as any other Beagador dog. But its Labrador parent will have a black coat. These dogs are first generation mixes. So, they have two purebred parents. This also means that puppies are much less predictable, as they could inherit any mix of traits from their two parents. So, a black Lab Beagle mix could be almost exactly like their Labrador parent, almost entirely like their Beagle parent, or a perfect mix of the two. This unpredictability applies to all of their traits. Including their appearance, personality, and more. There are two pigments that form the base of all dog coat colors. These are eumelanin black and pheomelanin red. Other genes will interact with these base pigments to produce different fur colors. But, black is a dominant shade in dog fur color genetics. So, getting black puppies is common if you breed a black Lab with a Beagle. Black Lab Beagle mix puppies may have other colors in their coat too. Such as a black base with a white chest, or white markings on their legs. So, bear this in mind before choosing a puppy based on their coloring and markings alone. They may be able to reserve a black puppy for you if there are only one or two in a litter. But, luckily, since these two parent breeds are quite similar, we can make a few assumptions. A Beagador with a black Lab parent will be intelligent, very people-oriented, and very energetic. This mix comes from two working breeds, so it will have plenty of endurance, strength, and all round energy. Black Lab Beagle mix dogs are happiest in homes where they get plenty of exercise. But, they are also intelligent, so they will also need lots of mental stimulation. Beagadors that do get left alone can develop separation anxiety. Are They Aggressive? The Labrador is known for being one of the friendliest dogs out there. Many people also find Beagles very people-oriented. But, one study into canine aggression found that Beagles scored higher than average for aggression towards owners. Plus, Beagles were originally hunting dogs. So, they may show aggression towards other pets, including chasing and tracking them, which can be stressful for other animals in your home. But, if not raised properly, any dog can show signs of fear and aggression. Practice a strong recall, and keep your Beagador on the leash when around small animals outside that it may chase. And, consider other animals in your home before bringing a Beagador into the family. Although they often get along well with other similarly sized dogs, a Beagador may chase cats or other small animals. Black Lab Beagle Mix Health and Care There are a number of potential health issues that a Beagador puppy could inherit from its two purebred parents. Owners should learn about these issues so they can spot symptoms early if they are ever an issue. Plus, choose a reputable breeder that health tests their dogs to minimise the chance of your puppy inheriting any of these problems. Some common health issues black Lab Beagle mix dogs face include: Hip dysplasia. Finding a healthy puppy. Where Do The Come From? The Beagle Lab mix has a strong working history on both sides of the family. The Lab originated in Northwest Newfoundland, Canada. Once upon a time, the Labrador was actually known as St. In modern times, the Lab is bred as a doting family pet. In addition, Labs are known as excellent guide dogs for the blind. Their intelligence and loyalty make them great service animals to their human companions. Just like the Lab, Beagles were bred primarily for hunting. Beagles are also known for a keen sense of smell and their signature bark, which comes in handy when leading hunters to a fallen game. Temperament and Behavior of the Beagle Lab Mix As with any first-generation crossbreed, the outcome in terms of things like temperament can be unpredictable. Crossbred dogs can inherit behavioral traits from either purebred parent. Taking a closer look at the parents of your potential Beagle Lab mix puppy can give you some insight into the possible temperament your dog could inherit. In general, Labs are widely known as intelligent dogs, eager to please and easy to train. They are excellent family dogs and do well with children and other pets. But Labs like to chew! As such, they require an abundance of toys and bones to reduce the chances of damaged furniture and flooring. Labs are also high-energy dogs requiring regular exercise and love nothing more than being part of fun family activities. Beagles are known to be playful, affectionate, and highly energetic, meaning they crave constant activity and need a sufficient amount of exercise. Beagles are also known to love the outdoors. Since they are easy to train, Beagles do well in homes with children, just like the Lab. However, they are quite vocal and known for their boisterous bark! Defining Characteristics of the Beagle Lab Mix As with temperament, the Beagle Lab mix can inherit a wide range of physical traits from both parents. Features like coat color, weight, and height have to be left to chance and will depend on which parent the mix takes after. The Lab comes in three standard colors: black, yellow, and chocolate. The Beagle has 25 possible color combinations, with ten colors making up those combinations—tan, white, brown, lemon, red, blue, black, bluetick, redtick, and fawn. The full-grown Labrador will be 22 to 25 inches and weigh about 55 to 80 pounds. An adult Beagle is typically 13 to 15 inches tall and weighs about 20 to 30 pounds. In general, a full grown Beagle Lab Mix will be a medium sized dog that about 19 to 24 inches and 25 to 45 pounds. Again, size, height, and weight can vary depending on the purebred parents. Grooming Your Lab Beagle Mix For the most part, the Beagle Lab cross is easy to care for and only requires bathing a few times a month. Both the Lab and the Beagle have similar weather-resistant coats that shed seasonally. So, the Beagle Lab mix is going to require weekly grooming and brushing to help keep its coat shiny and healthy. Training and Exercising Your Beagle Lab Mix Since the temperament of the Beagle and Lab are quite similar, a Lab Beagle Mix puppy is expected to be an intelligent, highly energetic, and incredibly loyal crossbreed. Like his parents, the Lab Beagle Mix will be eager to please and easy to train. This can include daily walks on public trails or paths, hanging out in parks, and switching up scenery to get your dog used to new faces, sounds, and smells. Labrador Beagle Mixes are known to suffer separation anxiety and may exhibit destructive behavior when left alone too long. If they become bored, the Beagle Lab Mix will sometimes bark, or even howl. Consistent exercise and a variety of toys will help keep your Beagle Lab Mix calm and entertained while you are away. As with all breeds, some health problems are passed down from generation to generation, and the purebred Lab is no exception. Labs are known to suffer loose knee joints, elbow and hip dysplasia, ruptured ligaments in their hind legs, eye disease, heart disease, epilepsy, cancer, and chronic allergies. Labs are also more prone than the average dog to gastrointestinal problems and bloating. Early health screening of your Beagle Lab mix can help to avoid or prepare for future problems. Choose healthy brands of food that provide proper nutrition depending on the age and weight of your Beagle Lab mix. Doing this can help reduce the chance your Beagle Lab mix will suffer from obesity. The Beagle Lab Mix will do best with an owner who lives an active lifestyle and enjoys being outdoors. Lab Beagle Crosses makes excellent family dogs. Finding a Labrador Beagle Mix Puppy Finding a new puppy from a reputable, responsible source can sometimes be tricky. So do plenty of research before you decide where to get your Beagle Lab Mix. Most reputable breeders should be able to provide certificates regarding the health of its parents and prove they have been screened and cleared of certain health issues. Be sure to ask about temperament issues and health concerns with parent dogs when looking to adopt any crossbreed. If you are unsure about rescuing from a local shelter or purchasing a dog from a breeder you find online, you could try attending a local dog show. Networking at events like this can help point you in the right direction. You can also find a local AKC , which can help you locate the right breeder. Shelters often carry all types of crossbreeds, and one of the many advantages of a rescue dog is the price! Although most shelters incur fees, they are often a fraction of what some breeders will charge. Most shelters will cover the initial vet fees, to ensure the dog is adoption-worthy and ready for a new home. We recommend researching reputable shelters in your area to find out the specifics on pricing. Glaucoma, cherry eye, progressive retinal atrophy Joints: Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, luxating patella Other Hypothyroidism, hereditary myopathy, Exercise Induced Collapse Epilepsy Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder that is known to occur in the Beagle parent of this mix. This issue can cause seizures in affected dogs. Beagles that are known to suffer from epilepsy should not be used to create Beagador puppies. Glaucoma Canine glaucoma actually refers to an entire group of eye conditions that affect the optic nerve. Dogs with this problem may lose their vision entirely over time. Others may experience pain and redness around their eyes to accompany this vision loss. Cherry Eye Cherry eye is another canine eye disorder that is often seen in the Beagle parent. You may notice redness and excessive itching or rubbing in dogs with cherry eye. Progressive Retinal Atrophy This is another eye disorder, often seen in the Labrador parent of the Beagador. Over time, dogs with PRA will lose their sight completely. Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Hip and elbow dysplasia are a joint disorder commonly seen in the Labrador Retriever. This can lead to pain and trouble moving and walking. But, luckily health tests are available for this issue, so dogs with high risk can be avoided when breeding Beagadors. Luxating Patella Luxating Patella is also known as a dislocated kneecap. If your dog has this problem, their kneecap will slide or move out of its normal place. This can cause problems walking and pain. Hypothyroidism Dogs with hypothyroidism will have an underactive thyroid gland, slowing down their metabolism. Signs of this can include weight gain, lethargy, dull hair, and getting easily cold. This problem is treatable, but not curable. Hereditary Myopathy Hereditary myopathy is also known as muscle weakness. It is a genetic issue that can be found in the Labrador Retriever breed. A DNA test is available to identify carriers and aid in planned breeding to avoid passing the disease on. Be careful of overexercising and overexciting Beagle Lab mixes, especially if they are known to suffer with this issue. General Health of Cross Breeds As long as this mix is bred by a reputable, experienced breeder, they will usually have great health. Discuss any unusual or suspicious findings with your vet. Labrador Retrievers and Beagles are prone to excessive weight gain. This will increase the chance of elbow or hip dysplasia and hypothyroidism. The Beagle Lab mix will have a short, dense, double coat. It may be water repellant, like a Lab. If so, you may notice a strong smell when your dog gets wet. This is due to the oily covering on his fur that repels water. Once he is dry, the smell should dissipate. Coat Care The Beagador will always have a short, dense, double coat. It may be soft like a Beagle, or water repellant like a Labrador. A Beagador will need regular brushing to maintain a healthy coat. Regular brushing will also reduce shedding. Be sure to give him some extra attention during the warmer months, when shedding is at its peak. This breed is known to shed a lot. It will likely not be suitable for people who suffer from allergies. Based on the average lifespans of the parent breeds, the expected lifespan of a Beagle Lab mix is years. Although this is by no means a fixed length. Choosing a puppy from a reputable breeder, following the tips above, and attending regular veterinary checks will help to increase this lifespan. They need a high level of training to contain their high spirited nature. But they will provide hours of fun and loving companionship for adults and children alike. A well trained Beagador will be happy to accompany the family on outdoor adventures, hikes in the woods, or a visit to the lake. Beagle Lab mixes are pack animals that need to be with their family. They will not tolerate being alone for long. A family that is often away from home would not be a good fit for this social pooch. You may want to consider opening your heart to one of these great dogs. Rescuing a dog is a great option for people who are less particular about the exact breed or characteristics of their Beagle Lab mix puppy. Rescue organizations are also a great option if you want to adopt an adult dog. This is a good choice if you prefer specific personality traits or are looking for a dog who already has some training. Finding a Rescue Center Currently, breed centers that specialize in Beagadors are not common. To find a Beagle Lab mix available for rescue, look in rescue centers in your local area. You can also look in rescue centers that are dedicated to the Labrador and Beagle parent breeds. Many of these places will take in mixed breeds as long as one of their parents is their chosen breed. As the name indicates, a Beagador is created by crossing a purebred Beagle and a purebred Labrador. Ultimate Cane Corso Golden Retrieve. These highly energetic and oft-mischievous dogs are sure to keep you and your family entertained for hours! Before bringing home a Beagle and Black Lab Mix, you must learn all that you can about them. It may be that the first Beagador was created unintentionally. However, the popularity of the Black Beagador is on the rise since these dogs combine the traits of two of the finest and most popular American dog breeds. No wonder breeders are now intentionally creating Beagador puppies for sale. Let us study the characteristics of the parent dog breeds of the Beagle and Black Lab Mix, so we can understand the offspring better. Beagle Beagles are a British dog breed that was originally created to hunt in packs. These small-to-medium-sized dogs come in two sizes — under 13 inches and inches weighing less than 20 lb. Beagles are known for their keen sense of smell. It is due to this gift that they are used extensively as police dogs, drug sniffer dogs, and search and rescue dogs. Beagles are also known for their unique bark. The bark of a Beagle is more of a high-pitched howl known as baying. Naturally, they need firm training to curb their excessive barking! Beagles are also social, friendly, and loving dogs that need plenty of daily physical and mental stimulation. Without these, they easily get bored and even destructive. You can read more about the origin of beagle here. They are known for their solid black coats, which are a result of a dominant black gene that suppresses all other colors. Black labradors measure about 21 inches at withers and weigh around lb. Just like the Beagles, Black Labs were bred for hunting. They could hunt on land and in water. Today, Labrador Retrievers are used as search and rescue dogs as well as police dogs. They are smart, easy to train, and highly affectionate dogs. That is also why there are no set standards for the breed. You can expect your Beagador puppy to weigh between 30 and 60 pounds kg and measure about 13 to 22 inches cm at the withers. Naturally, some dogs may be smaller or larger than this range. It all depends on complex canine genetics. Coat Type and Coat Colors The muscular Beagador has a short, smooth, double coat that they shed seasonally. They can come in a variety of colors depending on the colors of the parent breeds. Beagles are available in several colors like tri-color black-tan-white , as well as lemon, red, blue, white, brown, etc. Black Labs, as their name indicates, are only available in solid Black coats. On mixing the two breeds, you could get a Beagador in solid black color or a combination of black, brown, tan, lemon, white, fawn, red, etc. Your Beagador could even acquire tri-coloring like the Beagle parent. Grooming Needs Most Beagadors develop a short, dense, double coat like the parent dogs. You may want to brush your pet weekly using a slicker brush or a comb. You can even use a pet grooming glove to rub your pet down. This will remove all the loose hair. Your Beagador will also need monthly baths to prevent doggy odor. In general, Beagadors are friendly, affectionate, and extremely loyal dogs. They are also energetic and need a lot of daily physical activity to burn off that energy. Since both parent dogs are incredibly intelligent, your smart Beagador will need mental stimulation to keep them from getting bored. You could consider enrolling your pet in agility courses or arranging some obstacles for your pet to maneuver at home. Training your Beagle and Black Lab is one of the first things to do. Without training, your Beagador can get bossy and could misbehave. Thankfully, training these eager-to-please dogs is relatively easy, and with consistent efforts, you will see results soon. Your Beagle and Black Lab mix is also independent, curious, and alert. They always want to explore their surroundings and investigate new sights, sounds, and smells. They are also affectionate dogs and usually hate being left alone for prolonged periods. Many Beagadors are known to suffer from separation anxiety. Top breeders usually charge more as they also provide you with vet records and records of health tests and genetic tests conducted on the parent dogs. Alternatively, you could go for home-cooked meals made with brown rice, meat, and vegetables. Raw or BARF diet is also another option. Always consult your vet when selecting a diet for your Beagador to ensure optimum and balanced nutrition. Most Beagadors live for years. Both parent dog breeds are intelligent, loyal, alert, energetic, and curious dogs. Therefore, the Beagador is also highly likely to be an interesting, smart, and highly trainable dog. I am a parent of two adorable beagles and I share everything I learn about them, along with lots of tips, tricks, and advice.
Fun: Educational: I bought this toy a month before Christmas because I had read that it needed to be programmed and I wanted to do it in advance so it would work correctly when it was opened. I thought you could play the names in the store. This is not true. I spelled the name and pronon-unced it. I called customer service to find out if the name coud be added and downloaded. This is definitely a weak point, because that is part of the advertised appeal of the toy. It only belongs to one name. I rate this as good. It also knows its own name, chosen by my daughter, which fortunately was on the list of names. Now for the other features. Does it grow? Yes, it grows every day, then it shrinks back down to the original size. My children were delighted by this feature. The dog is not a plush toy. It is hard plastic covered with a loose stretchy fabric. I chose the retriever because the brown color looked like it would hide dirt more than the poodle, which is white. The tail looks like it could break if it fell from a height, but after six weeks the toy is still in good shape. It has grown and shrunk at least twice. Week batteries apparently slow down the growth. It is still on the same batteries after six weeks which I rate as good. The songs it sings are catchy and my girls sing along. It wags its tail and looks cute. I rate all of these as good features. This add-a-name feature is only available for the Elmo and Dora dolls. This is really a big mistake on the part of Mattel. If it also had some other customizable sentences this would be aa real winner. As it is, my six and nine year-old daughters like it. It also teaches a small child responsibility because it is their personal pet, their own dog and baby to take care of. The size of this toy dog is .As the child shows this toy puppy the love, attention and TLC that all animals really want and need, the puppy will grow into a bigger dog in four days. Its body, legs, ears and tail will grow, little by little, each day, as the child interacts with it daily, playing its programmed games. Two games include singing songs and playing a barking game. The puppy can be taught to know its name, child's name, friend's name, and personal things about the child, such as the child's birthday. This cute little puppy comes in white poodle or yellow golden retriever, and has a CD-ROM with it in order to program it to interact with your child. This interactive dog is an educational toy teaching values and responsibility. This puppy also comes with a tape measure so the child can measure it daily and watch it grow, as well as a little brush, bone, puppy growing chart, and a puppy ownership certificate with the child's name and the puppy's name that the child personally names it. As soon as the puppy grows to its full size, it can be returned to puppy size again for more entertainment, love, bonding and sharing. A happy customer who recently bought this product for her three-year-old daughter states, "I purchased this puppy through Amazon for my daughter's Christmas present this year. She loves the puppy that she has named 'Bubbles', and has played with it every day since she got it. As the puppy grows over the four days it says more and more, and interacts with its owner. We thought at first that we had a faulty puppy, as it only 'grew' on the first day and not on the other days, but reading-up on the internet we found that if you replace the 'demo' batteries it comes with, then it functions correctly. We love this toy. It is also perfect for an only child who needs a playmate. It will keep your toddler busy for hours, bonding and sharing, like a small child and its new best friend, and treating it like a real dog, as the child lugs the cute little toy around. It is a perfect training mechanism for a real dog, some day, as the child grows up and matures to be able to take care of a real animal. Puppy Grows Is on the must-have list for every toddler this Christmas! Related Articles.

Socialization Our retrievers are raised in our home. From birth, they are handled by multiple adults and young children many times throughout the day. Our retrievers have been exposed to many different people, animals, flooring, ground types, sounds and smells. They are exposed to the many different activities that take place in a household with multiple children and many visitors. This is all done in an effort to provide the retrievers with well rounded experiences to help prepare them for your home. As in most newer scientific movements, there are both proponents and detractors. We feel that there are significantly more benefits to the puppy, than any possible downside. According to Dr. Carmen Battagltia, and researchers for the US Military, there is a small window of a newborn puppies life that, if a specific regimen of stimulation exercises, are performed on the puppy, for a specific amount of time, the puppy will benefit in the following ways: Improved cardio vascular performance heart rate Stronger heart beats Stronger adrenal glands More tolerance to stress Greater resistance to disease. In tests of learning, stimulated pups were found to be more active and were more exploratory than their non- stimulated littermates over which they were dominant in competitive situations. Medical Our retriever pups are microchipped shortly after birth. They are then, checked and vaccinated by a vet, and wormed three times. They will continue to remain on a vaccination schedule as long as they are in our care. Additionally, they are on a schedule of Heartgard and Nexgard. Training Litter training begins with our retrievers when they are just three weeks old. They graduate to utilizing a doggy-door to relieve themselves outside at approximately five to six weeks old. This is the initial stages of potty training your retriever. Approximately four weeks of additional positive training placed on your puppy. Our retrievers are able to demonstrate several actions prior to going to their new home. They are trained to demonstrate an Automatic Sit for being a friendly greeter. Our puppies are all super adorable and all have great attitudes. Choosing your future puppy won't be easy with this batch. To help you, we will gladly provide you with some extra pics or videos, and if you have any questions, just ask. Both of these puppies have been delivered to their forever homes and have adapted very well.
