I especially love using this toy for puppies who are just getting the hang of playing fetch. For puppies, picking up on how to play fetch can be tough. Balls that squeak or make noise when thrown help to make the game more exciting and help encourage young pups to chase whatever is making that high pitched sound! Leashes, Harnesses, and Collars Collars, leashes, and harnesses are important tools to help socialize your puppy. Getting your puppy used to wearing a leash, harness, and collar is an important step towards socializing them. So even though your Labrador puppy will outgrow his harness and collar quickly, I still suggest investing in these items. Here are five of my favorite leash, harness, and collar products for Labrador Retriever puppies. As I mentioned above, puppies are especially fragile so steer clear of attaching a leash to their collar and try to help them adjust to wearing a harness that is comfortable. What I like about this harness is that it is adjustable so you can use it a bit longer as your puppy grows. Best of all it is the perfect length five feet for puppy training and is a leash your Lab puppy can take with him into adulthood. It is built like a standard leash, but it offers you control over how far away your puppy can get. This is excellent for puppy parents who live in busy neighborhoods or who are working with a puppy who likes to wander. Large breed puppies like Labrador Retrievers require crates that grow with them. This is why I love crates that come with dividers so that they can grow with your Lab puppy. I also recommend playpens, as Labrador puppies are notorious for being very active and energetic. Lab puppies are also incredibly curious and tend to chew a lot in their first few months, which is why indoor dog gates will also be an important part of puppy proofing your home. Take a look at some of my favorite puppy-proofing products below. Nobody likes cleaning up potty accidents. Of course, no one wants a big, bulky pen that takes up half of their home either! I also love that the pen is big enough for puppies to grow into and allows them to learn how to explore a space larger than their crate while keeping them and your home safe from their curiosity. And since crate training is such an important part of puppyhood and actually helps your puppy adjust to being alone and feeling secure, we recommend investing in a good, high quality crate you can use for years. It has two separate doors for entrance and exit and it comes with a divider so it can be adjusted to the size of your dog as he grows. Just remember to leave your pup inside his crate with a KONG and some bedding so he is comfortable, and remember that puppies who are younger than six months old should not stay in their crates for longer than four hours. For those of you who plan to leave your puppy out and about while you are gone and after he is trained, of course , then a crate that folds may be your best bet. I do like the way these gates look and the simplicity of them, however, they are not always the most secure and may not stand up to a strong and curious puppy. These gates are also not ideal for leaving puppies unsupervised as they can sometimes find ways to knock them down. Grooming your Labrador puppy early on not only helps to socialize him and prepare him for a life of vet visits, groomer visits, and physical contact with people, but it also helps to keep him clean and healthy. Like babies, puppies are more sensitive to certain products and require products that are specifically designed to be gentle on their sensitive skin and fur. Be selective of the shampoos, dog brushes , and other grooming products you pick for your Labrador puppy and make sure you always use high-quality products. However, their popularity also means there are a lot of irresponsible breeders and puppy mills out there. Always ensure you are buying from a reputable breeder. Appearance The English Lab is considered a medium to large dog breed. They stand between .Male Labradors are normally heavier than female Labradors. They also have a medium length, thick tail which was originally used for propelling them through the water like a rudder. Coat The English Lab has a single coat which is short, stiff and dense. It is weather resistant, which comes from their heritage as working dogs. These dogs shed a lot and are therefore not the breed for those with allergies. Grooming can help, but we will go into more detail about that later on. Color The most common coat colors for the English Labrador Retriever are black, chocolate and yellow, all of which are accepted by the AKC in the breed standard. They can also be a silver color, but Silver Labradors are quite uncommon. Your Labrador should never be bi or tri-colored and should be one solid color. Temperament Labrador dogs are known for being one of the most gentle dogs and one of the least-aggressive dogs. These pups are friendly and have one of the sweetest natures! They are also adaptable and sociable, which is what makes the Labrador breed so popular. Because they are so good-natured, they can make great playmates for children and are very loyal to their family. They have been known to come to their owners rescue and are fearless. English Labs are quite active dogs and are best suited to an active family. They love their people and can get on very well with other animals in the home too. They do need training and socialization, as do all dogs, but their intelligence makes this extremely easy! Providing you can give them lots of love and attention, the English Lab is an excellent dog to have in the home and is even ideal as a first pet or for those with no experience with dogs. Lifespan English Labradors have an average life expectancy of between 10 and 12 years. Known Health Issues Labradors are known for being a healthy dog, but they can suffer from two main health problems. The first is elbow dysplasia and hip dysplasia, which is a result of abnormal development in their hip or elbow joints. It can result in pain, discomfort, lameness and an altered gait. Depending on severity, it can be managed with medication and therapy, but surgery is often an option. The other main health problem a Labrador can suffer from is patella luxation. It is often treated successfully through surgery. The most common causes of death within the Labrador breed are cancer, cardiac issues and old age. They can also be prone to epilepsy, although this can be treated with medication. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parents and will not breed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the English Lab and how they differ from the American Labrador Retriever, it is time to take a look at what living with one of these dogs on a day to day basis is really like. Fortunately, the Labrador is a very easy breed to take care of and is often recommended for first time dog owners. Below we will cover their food and diet, their exercise requirements and their grooming needs. They are known to eat anything that is in sight and they can reach, so watch out! Labradors are known to be prone to obesity, so it is very important that you do not give them too many treats, watch the amount you are feeding them and make sure they get enough exercise. You should give your dog dry kibble once they reach 8 to 9 months old. As a puppy, they should have four meals a day, which can be reduced to two once they reach adulthood. Most Labradors weighing around 60 pounds should eat around 4 to 5 cups of high quality dog food each day. Always remember to check the back of the dog food packet so you know how much of a specific food to feed your pup. As a medium to large breed that loves food, the English Lab can be prone to bloat. You must know the symptoms for it because it can be fatal. You can put their food in a puzzle feeder to slow them down. Of course, socialization is important to ensure they can tolerate each other, but there should not be an issue here. Training Labradors are known for being one of the easiest breeds of dogs to train thanks to their intelligence. It can take a little time and patience because they are excitable and energetic when they are young, but it should not be too hard. The most important thing to remember is that you should begin training your English Lab as soon as you get home. You should teach them things such as housetraining, heeling and sitting and responding to their age. It is important to start the training young because they will be more receptive and less likely to develop bad habits. Although you can train an older dog, it will be more difficult to get them out of the bad habits they may have already picked up. Any Labrador will respond well to treats, praises and other positive reinforcements. You should avoid using aversive training methods like punishment. It is widely known that these methods can actually create and worsen behavioral issues in dogs. Socializing Early and continued socialization is important for your English Lab. Grooming The Labrador sheds a lot and needs regular grooming! You will need to brush their coat twice a week to reduce shedding and remove any loose hairs, but this should be increased to daily brushing during seasonal coat blow outs. You also need to trim their nails often to avoid overgrowth and check their ears regularly for infection. You should also check their eyes often too. It is best to bathe your dog only when they need it, as these pups can have quite sensitive skin. Ensure that their coat is completely dry after bathing too, so they do develop any skin irritation. Try to brush their teeth everyday to avoid dental decay or disease. You can always use dental chews if this is easier! The bloodlines of the English Lab and the American Labrador is what sets them apart. The English Lab is said to be bred from show bloodlines, while the American Labrador is said to be bred from working bloodlines. Aside from this difference, the only other real difference is that the English Lab is slightly smaller than the American and can also be known to be a little lazier! However, in every other aspect, these dogs are the same breed. How much does an English Lab cost? You should be able to find a breeder easily thanks to their popularity, but you must watch out for irresponsible breeders and puppy mills. The breeder should always be able to give you health clearances for both parent breeds and you should see the puppies with their mother before you buy. If you do not want to buy your English Lab, you can always adopt. Unfortunately, due to their popularity these dogs are also popular in shelters. Check your local rescue center as you may find a pup who is looking for their forever home! They're an easy breed to train , low-allergen, and low-odor, so they fit in well with most homes and families. Though their low-shedding curly coats have the benefit of being nearly hypoallergenic , they do require lots of care and grooming. If you have the time and resources to dedicate to these peaceful pups, they make loving and loyal companions. Miniatures fall into the middle of the pack; standard poodles are the largest and toy poodles are the smallest. Some breed enthusiasts argue that there are actually five poodle classes, though the Klein or medium poodle and the teacup poodle have yet to be recognized by the AKC. Like their standard and toy-size cousins, miniature poodles have athletic, muscly bodies thanks to their origins as water retrieval dogs for duck hunters. Like their breed siblings, mini poodles have curly coats, lively faces, and dark eyes. While the elaborate continental hairdo, with its curling pom-poms carefully shaped and clipped around the joints and chest, is popular with show poodles, most miniature poodle owners prefer the low-key sporting clip, a short, one-length cut that looks a bit less like a topiary. No problem. The miniature poodle comes in an array of hues, including black, white, apricot, grey, silver, and brown. The breed tends to shed only minimally, so you won't need to stock up on lint rollers with a mini poodle around. And, while no dog is truly hypoallergenic , poodles of all sizes can be a good fit for people with allergies. Even when they're given a simple one-length-all-over sporting clip, miniature poodles require regular grooming appointments—or an owner who is seriously skilled with clippers. Miniature poodles are active, athletic dogs who need plenty of daily exercise and long daily strolls. They're up for adventure and love to stay busy, so it won't be hard to keep them moving. Miniature poodles love to swim , and swimming can be an excellent workout for these curly cuties. Minis also love playing fetch and can burn off some of their abundant energy chasing after balls and sticks in the backyard. These tiny athletes also excel in obedience training and agility. Because of this, I would recommend starting by teaching them to jump up on something elevated, like a low chair, couch or bed," Silverman says. Bonk recommends keeping training upbeat, fun, and not repetitive. Encouraging your pup with lots of praise and consistency will get your eager-to-please mini in his zone. Thanks to their people-pleasing nature, miniature poodles are typically easy to potty train. Just make sure they have a healthy diet of high-quality dog food and plenty of fresh, clean water available. Your veterinarian should be able to recommend a food with the right nutrients for your dog's age and nutritional needs.
