Such cream Golden Retrievers are frequently being touted as being healthier, of having better temperament, of having stronger longevity and the implicit suggestion is that they therefore are more valuable than the more golden-colored Golden Retrievers bred in North America. Due to these common marketing ploys the average puppy buyer sometimes mistakes such light-colored Golden Retrievers for being a separate breed. Nothing could be further from the truth. There is only one Golden Retriever breed, governed by the breed standard endorsed by various recognized Kennel Clubs around the world. Feathering may be lighter than rest of coat. With the exception of graying or whitening of face or body due to age, any white marking, other than a few white hairs on the chest, should be penalized according to its extent. Allowable light shadings are not to be confused with white markings. Predominant body color which is either extremely pale or extremely dark is undesirable. Some latitude should be given to the light puppy whose coloring shows promise of deepening with maturity. Any noticeable area of black or other off-color hair is a serious fault. MANY breeders of imported Golden Retrievers have now adopted a practice of getting FCI health testing done on puppies and dogs under a year of age by unscrupulous breeders overseas. These tests are done before hips and elbows are developed and before possible hip dysplasia will show up. How We Raise Our Puppies There are always three experienced adults working full time raising our puppies a husband, wife, and adult daughter. If we should have more than two litters that overlap, our other adult daughter will also help. When puppies are here, they are our priority. Everything else in our lives takes a back seat to the puppies so we can work full time around the clock doing puppy work. Our home is large enough for all puppies to be raised inside our home. We have five doggy doors to five different puppy play yards where puppies over 5 weeks freely live coming in and out of our home. We have almost a dozen fenced areas, and a total of nine acres fenced for our dogs and puppies. By far, most that try to earn it fail. Tara and Karen earned the required points in less than a year and a half including time off for Tara to whelp and raise a litter of puppies and for Karen to raise and train dozens of other puppies. There were less than 70 dogs to earn it nationwide in .Karen has also recently won Combined High in Trial on the last day of the Southeastern regional competition. There are eleven regions in the U. The regional competitions are where the best competitors in the country compete to earn invitations to the National Obedience Competition the NOC. The NOC is the most prestigious obedience event in the country. Each region hosts only one regional competition a year and the NOC happens only once a year as well. Karen is one of very few trainers in the competitive obedience world who uses exclusively positive reinforcement training. Puppies are smart, and if every time they cry you let them out, they will continue to cry. Instead, positively reinforce their good behavior. If you positively reinforce their good behavior, puppies can learn to quit crying in the crate in just a few short days although some do take longer than that. In the wild, when puppies find themselves alone, they cry to let other members of the pack know where they are. So crying in the crate is natural. The shortcut to teaching her this is to actually not leave her at night, but put her crate in your room. What we did with our dog was instead of putting the crate in our room, we slept out in the living room where the crate was for the first three nights we brought him home. To help your pup realize that the crate is safe, put a toy or two in there with her, play games involving the crate, and feed her in the crate. If your puppy is not getting enough exercise and burning off that crazy puppy energy, her reaction when you put her in the crate might be to cry and whine. Putting a puppy, especially a very young puppy, full of energy in a crate is setting them up for failure. Solution Go play! Games of tug and fetch, and training to mentally tire out your pup, are great ways to burn off some of that puppy energy. Playing with toys is another great way to wear them out. Does your puppy have a nice, comfy bed? Is there enough room in the crate? If your puppy is uncomfortable in his crate, then he might let you know by crying. Solution Check to make sure they have a comfortable bed with enough room. That means that your puppy is starting to be potty trained. Has she gone in the past hour? Did she just drink a lot? Did she just eat? Did she just play or chew a lot? All of these activities could cause your pup to have to go potty. Make sure not to put your puppy in the crate with a full bladder. This will set them up for failure in your crate training efforts, and cause the process to be slow. Solution Take them out to potty! Hey, nobody likes to be bored. Usually, a bored puppy is a bad puppy. Solution Tire them out or keep them entertained. You achieve both of those by giving them fun, exciting toys to play with, taking them out for walks, or playing with them before putting them in the crate. Play with all of his limbs and joints, and if he yelps when you come to a certain part of his body, that may be why he is crying. Another giveaway may be a limp.
