The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.

Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Nevada? Check out our available English Bulldog Puppies page. At times, we have available puppies but almost always have a waiting list as well. A quick look at our available puppies is the starting point to begin the process. Send us an email or give us call .If approved to adopt one of our puppies you are welcome to place a deposit to hold until your puppy is ready to go home. Greetings from the Wysongs! Through years of research and development, Bruiser Bulldogs is leading a new movement away from the overdone, wrinkled bulldog that has been long plagued by health problems. By embracing a healthier, more athletic look they are able to ensure that each and every English Bulldog Puppy for sale by Bruiser Bulldogs is supported by a platform of health tested, clean genetics. Mitch and Erica believe it is their responsibility to provide emotional and mental support for the lifetime of each and every English Bulldog puppy they produce. To ensure the success of every adoption, Bruiser Bulldogs will always be committed to helping Bruiser Bulldog adopters care for their English Bulldogs to the best of their ability. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T.

Lifespan Sociability The size of the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever tells you a lot of what you can expect from this pooch. He is big, very big. That means you must have the space to give him enough exercise. It also means that he is more expensive to own because of your higher food costs. That makes owning this pup more of a financial commitment than a smaller dog. The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever brings a lot of the best qualities of the parent breeds together in an adorable package. The Bullmastiff in him tames the high energy of the Golden. Despite his size, this dog is quite friendly, albeit a bit aloof with strangers. Gamekeepers on estates and the Bullmastiff share a common goal. Poaching was—and still is—a significant problem for managing wildlife populations. Gamekeepers in England had an ace in the hole. The Bullmastiff proved a formidable guard dog to discourage this illegal activity. Selective breeding helped develop a dog that could handle the job. The Golden Retriever has its roots in Scotland. The UK connection is evident with the origins of the Golden Retriever. While the Bullmastiff claimed England, this pup got its start in Scotland. Lord Tweedmouth , aka Dudley Marjoribanks, refined the selective breeding to create the ideal dog for life among the aristocracy. A myth, later debunked, had the Golden Retriever joining the circus. The history of many breeds often includes a mix of fact and fiction. There is a connection to this country, but it was with the greatest show on Earth. The origins of the two canine lines had different paths, even though similarities exist. He is an affectionate and loyal companion to everyone in the family. He is intelligent, but there is also the independence of the Bullmastiff. That pup also has a relatively high propensity toward barking that you must control early. The Golden Retriever also tends to nip as a puppy, which requires equal attention. Are These Dogs Good for Families? His friendly, happy-go-lucky personality will make him a welcome addition to your home. He will do best with older children because of his large size. The concern again goes back to the size of the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever. This pup has a moderate prey drive that a fleeing cat may trigger into action. Bringing a pet into your home is a serious responsibility, especially with a pooch this big and strong. However, that only scratches the surface of this lovable pooch. That will certainly add up over time. The formulation of these products is more in line with the metabolism of these canines. Surprisingly, both parent breeds of the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever are prone to gaining weight. Therefore, you should monitor his intake and activity level to adjust how much you give accordingly. An obese pet has a reduced quality of life and often a shorter lifespan due to other health impacts. We suggest daily walks to keep him mentally stimulated and to reinforce those socialization skills. This pooch takes his play seriously, so be ready for it. The intelligence of the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever is a plus for learning new commands. Despite his size, this pup has a sensitive side. Stick with positive reinforcement and avoid harsh reprimands. This pooch is eager to please and willing to do it. Treats make an excellent training aid for this food-motivated pet. Both shed seasonally. You can control how much you must vacuum with frequent brushing. It can encourage puppy mills and overbreeding. It also increases the risk of congenital issues. The main concerns for the Golden Bullmastiff Retriever are in joint and skeletal system development. We strongly urge you only to get a pup that has received the recommended health screenings before you fall in love and buy a pet. Minor Conditions. Learn more about this mixed breed in this article. The Bullmastiff, a Bullmastiff, is large and considered a giant. The Golden Bullmastiff Retriever hybrid is a large dog that can guard and protect the family. The hybrid has some wonderful traits from both parent breeds. This giant dog breed is gentle. Both parent breeds are derived from the mids. While they are intelligent, the breed is known for being stubborn, as both parent breeds tend to have this stubborn streak. Training should be done with positive reinforcement, as the French Bullhuahua will often become obstinate if a harsh correction is used. This breed needs rules in their home right from the start since their small stature often makes them prone to small dog syndrome. Treating the Chihuahua French Bulldog as anything except a dog can lead to this dog ruling the roost, and it can lead to problems such as aggression and separation anxiety. Start early with your French Bullhuahua puppy and ensure the dog is properly socialized from a young age to avoid aggression problems. In addition, keep training fun and short, with only 10 to 15 minutes of training being done at one time. With consistency and positive reinforcement, the Chihuahua French Bulldog can be a well-trained breed…however, make sure you approach training with plenty of patience. French Bullhuahua Exercise It may be surprising, but the French Bullhuahua is a fairly active dog and does wonderful in an active household. However, the exercise needs of the Chihuahua French Bulldog can suit any type of lifestyle since the small size of the breed means they need very little room to burn their energy. On average, 30 minutes of play is enough to meet the exercise needs of your French Bulldog Chihuahua. This can be through a walk, playing in a secure backyard, or playing fetch down the hallway inside. The breed is quite adventurous, so it is important to keep them on a leash when they are not in a secure area. In addition, be careful about visiting places with a lot of dogs. French Bullhuahuas are not usually shy and will often approach larger dogs, which could lead to accidents due to their small size. While the French Bullhuahua is not prone to bloat, smaller meals will prevent gorging, which can cause other health problems and diarrhea for the dog. Always make sure that your Chihuahua French Bulldog has access to fresh water. In addition to their regular meals, the breed enjoys treats such as fruits, vegetables, dog biscuits, and meat; however, make sure all treats are included in the daily calories to avoid obesity in your pup since the breed is prone to weight gain. French Bulldog Chihuahua Mix Puppies There is nothing cuter than a French Bullhuahua puppy with its goofy ears ranging from folded to standing upright and large eyes. They are often very sweet puppies filled with short playfulness that makes many people laugh. The breed can be quite clown-like as puppies and should be bright-eyed and solid puppies. French Bullhuahua puppies are a breed that needs a lot of patience. They can be quite stubborn, but with consistency, the breed will learn rules and commands. They may be a bit slow to housetrain and often do better when they are housetrained to puppy pads first. It is important to start training as soon as the puppy comes home. In addition to their stubbornness, care should be taken with puppy-proofing stairs and drops in your home. French Bullhuahua puppies can be prone to several bone and spine diseases, and allowing them to jump up or down from places can lead to long-term health problems, sometimes debilitating ones, later in life. They tend to be more of a one-person dog and are not suited for families with young children unless they are raised with the children. On average, the French Bullhuahua should be in homes with children over .The French Bullhuahua can be a stubborn breed and, without proper socialization, can have aggression problems. For these reasons, they are not recommended for first-time dog owners. French Bullhuahuas have medium-to-high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. French Bullhuahua dogs prefer to be mostly around adults or older kids who know how to play gently. Early socialization, however, can help them get along with other pets just fine. French Bullhuahuas can be a bit stubborn and take to house-training slowly, but for a consistent owner, their loyalty and desire to please will help training go a bit more smoothly. French Bullhuahua History The French Bullhuahua mixed dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders started intentionally mixing Chihuahuas and French Bulldogs in the s, likely in North America. Breeders wanted to mix the two adorable parent breeds to help minimize the breathing problems of the French Bulldog with their brachycephalic short and smushed faces. They continued to create French Bullhuahuas as demand for the mixed breed pups climbed. Even though the French Bullhuahua mixed breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up rescues in your area, or check with breed specific French Bulldog or Chihuahua rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed breed dogs and find homes for them. French Bullhuahua Size As the French Bullhuahua is a relatively new breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between Chihuahua and French Bulldog parents, you can expect French Bullhuahuas to be on the small side. Most weigh in at ten to 30 pounds and stand anywhere from six to twelve inches from the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger than average. French Bullhuahua Personality If there was ever a spunky mixed breed dog, it is the French Bullhuahua. As smaller dogs, French Bullhuahuas feel the need to protect their humans and tend to be a bit yappy. This lap dog loves to let their humans know about door knocks or unexpected noises from the TV. These dogs do best with early training to curb any unwanted barking habits. They can be a bit stubborn and take to house-training slowly, but for a consistent owner, their loyalty and desire to please will help training go a bit more smoothly. As small pups, French Bullhuahuas tend to latch on to one family member most of all, though they can get along with others in the house. French Bullhuahuas may be best suited to a one-person home or smaller families, as they demand quite a bit of attention. French Bullhuahua Health The French Bullhuahua mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Chihuahua and French Bulldog also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems the French Bullhuahua suffers from include: Intervertebral Disc Hip Dysplasia. Lifespan Sociability As with many cross-bred pups, part of the price of French Bullhuahua puppies will be determined by the pedigree of the parents, albeit being considerably less than purebred puppies would be. One essential factor to keep in mind before purchasing one of these puppies is the extra cost of medical fees. Expect to pay just as much, if not more, to get the shots, papers, and other specialized medical treatments typical to the health of the French Bullhuahua. They are prone to inherit the common health issues of the parent breeds. French Bullhuahuas are a great choice for families who are looking to spend a lot of time with a playful and loving dog. They do have a stubborn side to their personality which can make training a bit complex. The mix of the two parents was originally to minimize breathing problems. French Bulldogs have brachycephalic faces, meaning they are shorter and smushed. Although they were bred to have this cosmetic trait, it can cause abnormal health problems due to restricted breathing. Breeders began to mix these two breeds to keep the cute, small traits that many dog lovers adored, while mitigating respiratory problems. The Chihuahua has a typical dog face, and breeding the two helped elongate the snout of the Bulldogs. Then, people started to fall in love with the specific crossbred, and the demand for the French Bullhuahua increased and became a designer breed. Christopher Columbus found the Chihuahua when he landed in the Americas. We know that both of these dog breeds have long histories. Many of the dog breeds common today originated in Europe and early America. Chihuahuas were found by Christopher Columbus when he landed in the Americas, initially believing that they were almost hairless, mute dogs. Hernan Cortes wrote about the dogs, noting that the Aztecs would raise them and proceed to sell the pups as food. They grew to be prized ratters in Mexico over the years and have currently become a dog associated with the rich in Western culture. Both of the parental breeds have become common dogs for celebrities to own. French Bulldogs and Chihuahuas have become a typical pet owned by celebrities. French Bulldogs may be an even more prolific Hollywood pet. These are dogs who know how to be spoiled! Rather, an owner should be ready to work on these traits when they begin to train their pups. They can be quite lovable dogs, typically picking one person whom they feel attached to and shower with love. Although people often think of smaller dogs as excessive barkers , these dogs usually only bark when there are new people around or if they are in a playful mood. They are generally delighted dogs, which makes them suitable as companions for singles who are only moderately active or for older people. They have even been known to work with patients suffering from depression and anxiety, helping relieve the symptoms with their perky attitudes. They can be overprotective of their families. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They tend to have short tempers, and although they are not aggressive, they are easily irritated by poking and prodding. If you do choose to adopt one of these dogs into a family with young children, the children should be coached not to irk the dog. These dogs should be socialized consistently with dogs of all sizes and ages from an early age. Doing this may still not be enough to keep the dog from getting excited around other strange animals, but it often helps quite a bit, especially if the other dog or cat lives in the home. They only need 1. Instead, set the food out twice , once in the morning and once in the evening. They only need to be walked about 5 miles each week, though the intervals of exercise should last for at least 30 minutes each time. Since these are intelligent dogs, they should be exercised physically and mentally. Give them chew toys or small puzzles with food rewards , or play interactive games with them. This takes care of their activity requirements and keeps them from being bored. To help socialize the pups and give them an exercise outlet, take them to a dog park. Just make sure that they will not be aggressive with other dogs beforehand. Doing this frequently keeps them accustomed to being around other animals and behaving well. The potential difficulty while training is why they are not a great fit for first-time dog owners. Anyone training these dogs will need a firm hand, consistency, and a great deal of patience. Any sort of aggression or irritation displayed during training sessions backfires with the French Bullhuahua, potentially causing it to become aggressive or uninterested. Maintaining their coat only takes a minimal amount of effort. It can quickly be done with a slicker brush that functions to glide over the coat, taking out any loose fur and dirt. If they are dirty, use pet-safe wet wipes to clean them. As with all dogs, general maintenance is important. Your pup may struggle with dental issues because of the shorter faces of the French Bulldog, which causes their teeth to crowd. Keep the nails clipped down as well, generally doing this every several weeks. They are still generally healthy dogs, but it is worth it to keep regular veterinary appointments. These should help you keep a close eye out for more severe conditions that may develop in this breed. Minor Conditions. Brindle, tan, brown, black, white, cream, merle Suitable for Experienced dog owners, apartment living, singles Temperament Playful, intelligent, reserved with strangers, stubborn While they can be great family dogs, they may be best suited for singles or small families, as they tend to attach to one particular human. Keep reading to learn more about French Bullhuahuas so that you can decide whether or not these dogs are a good fit for you and your family. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. If a dog is being sold for much less or much more than you expect to pay, it is worth asking why. These pups tend to be cautious around new people or strangers. They will suit you well if you are not new to owning a dog and can make a wonderful apartment companion. Still, you will want to make sure to start training your French Bullhuahua right away to nip any unwanted behavior in the bud. Are These Dogs Good for Families? This is because these dogs will play favorites, choosing one member of the household to bond more closely with. They do not appreciate a lot of commotion and are generally reserved with new people. If you do have kids, especially if they are very young, make sure to teach them how to properly interact with a dog; your French Bullhuahua may snap at them if they are too rough. Keep in mind that the earlier you introduce your dog to your children, the more likely they are to get along. Similarly, the French Bullhuahua needs plenty of socialization to get along with other pets. They can be territorial and overprotective animals, but the more opportunities your pet has to meet and get to know other animals from an early age, the better. These dogs are more prone to weight gain than other breeds, so we recommend sticking to specific mealtimes rather than allowing your pet to freely eat. Talk to your vet about what type and how much food is appropriate for your specific dog. You should plan to take your dog out walking for a minimum of 30 minutes each day. Your French Bullhuahua will also benefit from opportunities to run around in the backyard or at the dog park. As long as your pet gets adequate exercise, having a yard is not a requirement; these dogs are certainly adaptable to living in an apartment or another small space. This inherent stubbornness can make training your dog quite a challenge. As a result, these dogs are likely best suited for experienced dog owners who are familiar with dog training. You may want to set aside some time and money to bring your dog to a professional trainer. It is very important that your French Bullhuahua get the socialization and training it needs from an early age to avoid unwanted behaviors. If you plan to train your dog yourself, try to stay consistent and calm with your pet. It will respond much better to positive reinforcement than harsher methods of training. You should expect to brush your dog up to three times weekly to maintain a healthy coat and help prevent shedding. However, you should plan to clean its ears about once a week and trim its nails once every few weeks. Below, we have listed some serious and minor conditions you should look out for. Minor Conditions. It is also known as a French Bullhuahua. The French Bulldog Chihuahua mix is likely to have a winning personality. But prospective owners should be aware that the physical features of their parents can combine to pose a lifetime of health risks. With that said, we can look to the history of each parent breed to learn more about the origins of the French Bullhuahua. First, the Chihuahua! The Chihuahua The iconic Chihuahua has a somewhat controversial origin story, with many conflicting opinions about where the dog came from. The common theory is that the breed originated in Mexico. This is logical, given that the breed is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua. And it is true that what we know of today as the Chihuahua did come to us from Mexico. Pictures and carvings of breeds resembling Chihuahuas have been found decorating artifacts from lost societies all over the world. Either way, the breed is ancient. Despite its name, the Frenchie actually originated in England. It was bred primarily to be a lapdog, and a compact, city-compatible companion dog. Its origins date back to the mids. Today, both the French Bulldog and the Chihuahua are quite popular. Both breeds are prized for their adorable and unique looks, their loving personalities, and their petite size. The mix itself is fairly new, but the history and legend of both parent breeds goes back hundreds of years. The Chihuahua has an ancient history, that may be older than Mexico itself! Depictions of the Techichi breed, the predecessor of the modern Chihuahua, have been found in records of the ancient Toltecs of what is now Mexico. The French Bulldog is currently the 4 most popular breed in America, and it too claims some very famous owners. Do you know any fun facts about the French Bullhuahua? Leave a comment below! They reach a typical maximum height of about 12 inches. They typically possess a stocky, muscular body and the signature bat-ears that made Frenchies famous. Their heads are large for their bodies, adding to the cute-but-funny look. Coats are typically short to mid-length, and common colors are black, brown, tan, cream, white or a mix of colors. You will find that some Bulldog Chihuahua mixes look more like Frenchies, and some more like Chihuahuas. This is the nature of crossbred dogs, as there will always be some unpredictability. French Bulldog Chihuahua Mix Temperament The temperament of this mix will also be a blend of the temperaments of each parent breed. Generally speaking, the French Bullhuahua temperament is playful, loving, and a bit sassy. They love to spend time with their owners, and will usually bond closely to their favorite person. They have a moderate energy level. While they like to play, they are also quite content lounging about in your lap, getting plenty of attention and love! Chihuahua French Bulldog mixes are usually somewhat reserved around strangers, at least at first. Socialization from a young age is important. Bad Habits At times, this mix can become territorial and even aggressive. While this mix is loving and affectionate, they can also have a definite stubborn streak. At times this can make them difficult to train. Since undesirable behavior is easier to tolerate from tiny puppies, some owners let it pass rather than invest time and energy in shaping good habits. In other cases, new owners scoop their puppy out of new situations rather than engineering rewarding introductions. These dogs miss out on important socialization opportunities, and grow up nervous of strange people, dogs and environments. Chihuahuas in particular tend to yap and growl if they feel nervous or threatened. Dogs shoulds start their training from a very young age for best results. Positive reinforcement training is typically most effective. For some tips and tricks, see our Chihuahua training guide , crate training guide, and our general dog training guides. Socialization is very important with this breed, as they can be somewhat reserved and not very outgoing. To minimize aggression and shyness, make sure your dog gets plenty of exposure to other animals, strangers, children , etc. For exercise, this is a moderate-energy breed. They love to play, and go on frequent, shorter walks. They will also benefit from frequent trips to the dog park to play with other pups! The French Bulldog in this mix can mean that your pup might have some breathing or overheating issues. This is due to their Brachycephalic facial structure, which unfortunately can cause some serious health concerns! Be sure to watch for warning signs of serious breathing problems, particularly when your dog has been playing hard. Chihuahua Health First, the Chihuahua. The Chihuahua suffers from some health problems common to small dogs. Dental problems are quite common, as many Chihuahuas are born with dental deformities — or their teeth simply outgrow their small mouths. Joint problems, such as patellar luxation, are common. Epilepsy and low blood sugar are also possible. Blood sugar can usually be managed successfully by feeding your dog smaller, more frequent meals — but speak to your vet if you have concerns. With all that said, the Chihuahua is relatively healthy compared to many small breeds. It has an expected lifespan of years. Unfortunately, Frenchies suffer from a wide range of health problems, mostly due to the shape of their faces and snouts. The French Bulldog has a brachycephalic facial structure , which contributes to several health concerns. The structure of their faces affects their ability to breath, as well as their ability to cool themselves off by panting. Because of this, many Frenchies overheat easily, have trouble breathing, snore frequently, etc. Not all French Bulldogs have too much issue, but a large portion do. They also have many problems related to their size. Back problems, hip dysplasia, oversized heads, etc. In fact, French Bulldogs are almost entirely born by surgical cesarean section, simply because the puppies heads are too large to give birth naturally. The Chihuahua can also suffer during the birthing process. Lastly, keep in mind that due to the small size of this crossbreed, accidental poisoning is a concern. The Chihuahua French Bulldog mix can be made ill or even killed by relatively small amounts of chocolate, chewing gum, and other ingredients toxic to dogs. So, both breeds — and particularly the French Bulldog — face some very serious health concerns that should make you think twice about the breed. Some of these health concerns are improved by crossbreeding the two breeds, while others are not. We urge readers to think twice about this breed — and any other dog that frequently suffers from chronic health problems due to their breeding. In terms of their temperament, the Chihuahua French Bulldog mix can make for a good family pet. They are usually friendly, enjoy spending time with their family, and are a good fit for apartments and small homes, due to their size. That said, any potential owner should be very aware of all the potential health problems that these pups might face. Be sure to consider whether you are prepared to deal with a potential lifetime of health concerns! The Chihuahua is a bit more healthy, but can still face a lot of trouble. The mix of the two comes with significant risks for health concerns. If you have a moral issue with breeders continuing to breed dogs with significant health concerns, you can always adopt a pup. This way, you still get to enjoy the company of the breed, without having to support the ongoing breeding of disabled dogs. Rescuing a French Bulldog Chihuahua Mix We always encourage readers to rescue dogs from shelters, wherever possible. And of course, you should call your local shelters to see if they have anything for you! Watch for signs of mistreatment and aggression — and be prepared to be extra patient with your new pup! These places do not follow breeding standards, and often do not treat their animals very well! A good breeder should conduct health tests on their breeding stock, and have many years of experience. For more information, check out our puppy search guide! But, there are resources out there to help you — like our detailed puppy training guides Also, there are two additional things to keep in mind with this breed: They need to be socialized early and often, as they can be a bit shy with or even aggressive towards other dogs You need to be very careful with them physically, due to their small size and brittle bones You should also take your pup to the vet frequently, to ensure any health concerns are addressed early on.

To get attention Howling due to a trigger Most of the time, their howling is simply harmless communication that ends as quickly as it begins. You might notice it when the fire department drives by with sirens blaring, or a certain commercial comes on the television, or during part of a particular song. This howl can be fun and is comical to watch. They seem to enjoy their howling time and then move onto their normal dog business. Howling at other dogs or wildlife If their howling becomes more frequent, it is usually due to the neighborhood dogs howling or even nearby wildlife making animal sounds. This type of howling is usually easy to identify because there is an entire chorus of dogs howling at the same time. The dog may be relaxed or tense depending on what is going on or if they are howling in an attempt to alert their owner. Howling to get attention Dogs might also howl to get attention. This usually happens when they are separated from their owners in another room, crate, outside, or even at another location, such as the vet or while boarding. Howl as a form of begging The begging howl is less common but it can happen in a way similar to a begging bark. In this case, the dog is also howling to get attention and beg for what it wants, such as a toy or treat. Never give the begging dog the treat or attention while they howl unless you want it to become a habit. Howling due to separation anxiety Sadly, German shepherds will sometimes howl when they have separation anxiety. This howling happens when their owners are away from home and can go on for hours. German shepherds with separation anxiety usually exhibit accompanying behaviors such as destructive chewing, pacing, panting, inappropriate elimination, stress, depression, escaping, and more. Separation anxiety is a serious problem that needs to be addressed for the health and wellbeing of the dog. If a dog begins to howl for no apparent reason, especially when accompanied with a behavior change, it could be a signal that they need medical attention. Some signs to watch for include change in appetite, change in bowl habits, licking one area of the body, alienating themselves, becoming needier, avoidance of touch, change in gait, holding the ears back, panting, vomiting, fever, and hiding are all big signals that the dog is in some sort of distress and needs to be examined by a vet. Unleashing their inner wolf Most of the time howling is just a German shepherd channeling their inner wolf and letting some of their ancient lineage out. They enjoy howling and it can be entertaining to listen to them yowl. Howling is a totally normal dog behavior that many breeds enjoy, some more than others. In some cases, howling can be a signal that something more serious is going on. It could be an alert or a sign of distress. In these cases, their body language and the entire situation that is going on at the time must be looked at to determine why they are howling to determine if they need some sort of help. We hope you found this article interesting. As always, please feel free to pass it on to your friends. The amount that they howl depends on the individual dog. Likewise, you can teach them to start as well. So why do German Shepherds howl so much? There are a few reasons why they are getting in touch with their inner wolf. Take a quick glance at some of the most common causes of howling to figure out what has brought on this vocal performance. Howling is a Part of Who They Are Every dog on the planet is descended from wolves, and we all know that wolves how. Making noise is something that comes naturally to them. Image Credit: nori jaafer, Pixabay 2. German Shepherd Boredom Dogs bark and cry, so why do we become so concerned when they start to howl? The German Shepherd breed is usually extremely active. Howling from boredom could also be combined with other naughty behavior like chewing on things. Wolves also do this in the wild for their pack mates to help them find their way back into their territory. Signaling a Warning As herding dogs, this breed made lots of noise to scare off predators and criminals that came onto their land. Demanding Attention Is there a better way to get your attention than making a bunch of noise? If you respond to howling, the dog quickly learns to get your attention this way. This is a behavior that is normally picked up when they are small puppies. Howling from pain is usually easy to distinguish between howling from happiness. Dogs in pain will howl because they need our assistance. Image Credit: GoranH, Pixabay 8. German Shepherd Happiness Some dogs howl just because they are happy. Take comfort in knowing your pup is expressing their joy in such a vocal way. Sirens sound very similar to a dog howling, and your German Shepherd is simply replying to the outside noise. It may not sound similar to you, but dogs are capable of picking up much higher frequencies than we are. German Shepherds are usually on guard at this time, and if they are howling, it is probably because they are trying to signal that something is going on outside. Thankfully, there are a few things you can do to stop this behavior. Instead of scolding them, ignore them completely and remain persistent. Doing so lets them know that remaining quiet is the best way to get affection. Image Credit: Happy monkey, Shutterstock 2. Spend More Time with Them If your dog is demanding attention, it might help to be more genuine about your one-on-one time. Go outside and spend an hour playing with them. Give them lots of pats, hugs, and kisses. Counterconditioning Counterconditioning is a practice that tricks your dog into changing the way that they feel while they behave a certain way. For example, dogs that howl whenever someone walks by the house can be counter conditioned by giving them a treat as soon as they spot a person and before they start howling. The dog starts to associate a person walking by with a good feeling, which then makes them less likely to howl. Some breeds are more likely to howl than others. If it truly bothers you, you might think about getting a dog that is less likely to make a lot of noise. However, if you already have a noisy dog, there are ways that you can train them to stop.

Bring home a new addition to your family Bring home a new addition to your family Goldendoodles are a wonderful choice for families as they are a crossbreed of two of the smartest dog breeds, Golden Retrievers and Poodles. They are highly trainable, intelligent, and well-suited for families. They are affectionate, playful, and loyal, making them easy to care for and love. Additionally, Goldendoodles are hypoallergenic, making them a great option for people with allergies. They are created by breeding a purebred Golden Retriever with a purebred Poodle. The new Goldendoodle mix is a friendly, intelligent, and affectionate dog. F1B Goldendoodles are created by breeding a first-generation Goldendoodle with a purebred Poodle. Because F1B Goldendoodles have a higher percentage of Poodle genetics, they are often even more hypoallergenic and non-shedding than first-generation Goldendoodles. They also tend to have more predictable traits and can exhibit more of the desirable characteristics of Poodles, such as intelligence, trainability, and affectionate personalities. F1B Goldendoodles are popular pets for families, especially those with allergies or who are looking for a low-shedding dog. They are typically friendly, affectionate, and intelligent, and require regular grooming and exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Physical Characteristics of Goldendoodles Goldendoodles can have a range of physical characteristics, as their appearance can vary depending on factors such as the size and coat type of the Poodle parent and the Golden Retriever parent. However, here are some common physical characteristics of Goldendoodles: Goldendoodles Color: Most Goldendoodles are white, cream, chocolate or black, although other colors are also possible. As a medium to large breed, Labrador Retrievers need at least one year to reach their full size. A general rule of thumb suggests your Lab should be at or close to its full size by their first birthday. However, bigger-boned Lab puppies can keep growing and filling out their chest up to 18 months old. How big should a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever be? The average Lab weight at six months old is about 40 to 55 pounds for males or 30 to 35 pounds for females. Please keep in mind that these numbers are averages, and every puppy will grow at a slightly different rate. How much bigger will my Labrador Retriever get? There are three ways to predict the size of a Labrador Retriever at maturity: Age. Labrador Retrievers typically reach their full height and weight around their first birthday. Larger Labs may need up to 18 months to fill out their chest, but any weight gain after 12 months should be minimal overall. If your Lab is less than a year old, they are likely still growing and putting on muscle to reach their adult size. Paw Size. If their paws look oversized next to their legs and body, then they are probably still growing, as this is a classic puppy feature. Lastly, if you purchased your Lab through a breeder, you can contact them for a more exact height and weight estimate. What is the size of a full-grown Labrador Retriever? A full-grown Labrador Retriever weighs between 65 and 80 pounds and stands about .The average weight of a full-grown female Labrador Retriever should be about 55 to 70 pounds, standing at .Make sure to consult with your veterinarian to ensure that your Lab is maintaining a healthy weight for its body size. The Labrador Retriever growth rate should be indicative of its athletic body and muscular build. Did you know. ? Their webbed paws made them strong swimmers, along with their otter tail, which acts like a powerful rudder when retrieving ducks. English nobles spotted the dogs and brought them home across the Atlantic, where breeders continued to refine the breed into its own variation. Between their friendly demeanor, adaptability, and outgoing disposition, they make ideal family members. As cherished members of our families, Labs deserve the best care. Unfortunately, like many other purebred dogs, Labrador Retrievers are more susceptible to various health issues. Some of the most common examples include:. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Built for sport, the Lab is muscular and athletic. They have a short, easy-care coat, friendly demeanor, keen intelligence, and plenty of energy. Devotion to this breed runs deep; Labs are loving, people-oriented dogs who live to serve their families, and owners and fans sometimes liken their Labs to angels. The breed originated on the island of Newfoundland, off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Canada. Originally called the St. Today, most Labs skip the hard labor and spend their days being pampered and loved by their people. However, some Labs still serve as indispensable working dogs. They also excel as a search and rescue dog or as a retriever for hunters, thanks to their athletic build, strong nose, and courageous nature. And Labs have also become the breed to beat at dog sports such as agility and obedience competitions, especially obedience. In fact, owners say their sweet, helpful Lab is likely to greet an intruder and happily show them where the goods are stashed. One role has remained constant: wonderful companion and friend. Labrador Retriever Highlights Friendly and outgoing. Labrador Retrievers are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities. They are good with people of all ages and other animals. Intelligent and trainable. Labrador Retrievers are intelligent dogs that are easy to train. They are often used as working dogs, such as guide dogs, search and rescue dogs, and therapy dogs. Overall, the Labrador Retriever is a versatile and popular dog breed that makes a great family pet. They are friendly, intelligent, and trainable, and they have a low grooming requirement. If you are considering getting a Labrador Retriever, be sure to do your research to find a reputable breeder. Labrador Retrievers are wonderful dogs, but they require a lot of time and attention. They are not a good choice for people who are not active or who do not have a lot of time to spend with their pets. Originally called St. Although their heritage is unknown, many believe the St. The second Earl of Malmesbury was one of the first, and had St. The third Earl of Malmesbury was the first person to refer to the dogs as Labradors. In Newfoundland, the breed disappeared because of government restrictions and tax laws. Families were allowed to keep no more than one dog, and owning a female was highly taxed, so girl puppies were culled from litters. In England, however, the breed survived, and the Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a distinct breed in .They also top the list in Canada and England. Today, Labs work in drug and explosive detection, search and rescue, therapy, assistance to those with disabilities, and as retrievers for hunters. They also excel in all forms of dog competitions: show, field, agility, and obedience. Labrador Retriever Size Males stand .Females stand .Aside from a winning personality, they have the intelligence and eagerness to please that make them easy to train. Training is definitely necessary because this breed has a lot of energy and exuberance. The working heritage of the Lab means they are active. This breed needs activity, both physical and mental, to keep them happy. There is some variation in the activity level of Labs: some are rowdy, others are more laid back. All thrive on activity. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : This is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem or medication to control the pain. Osteochondrosis Dissecans OCD : This orthopedic condition, caused by improper growth of cartilage in the joints, usually occurs in the elbows, but it has been seen in the shoulders, as well. It causes a painful stiffening of the joint, to the point that the dog is unable to bend his elbow. It can be detected in dogs as early as four to nine months of age. Cataracts : As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow over time. Cataracts can usually be surgically removed with good results. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose their daytime vision, as well. Many dogs adapt to limited or complete vision loss very well, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Epilepsy : Labs can suffer from epilepsy, which causes mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Puppies are born with TVD, which is a malformation of the tricuspid valve on the right side of the heart. It can be mild or severe; some dogs live with no symptoms, others die. TVD is detected by ultrasound. Research is ongoing to learn how widespread it is in the breed, as well as treatment. Myopathy : Myopathy affects the muscles and nervous system. The first signs are seen early, as young as six weeks and often by seven months of age. A puppy with myopathy is tired, stiff when he walks and trots. He may collapse after exercise. In time, the muscles atrophy and the dog can barely stand or walk. There is no treatment, but rest and keeping the dog warm seems to reduce symptoms. Dogs with myopathy should not be bred because it is considered a heritable disease. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid themselves of the excess air in their stomach, and blood flow to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is drooling excessively, and retching without throwing up. Theyalso may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Acute Moist Dermatitis: Acute moist dermatitis is a skin condition in which the skin red and inflamed. It is caused by a bacterial infection. The more common name of this health concern is hot spots. Treatment includes clipping the hair, bathing in medicated shampoo, and antibiotics. Cold Tail : Cold tail is a benign, though painful condition common to Labs and other retrievers. The dog may bite at the tail. It is thought to be a problem with the muscles between the vertebrae in the tail. Weekly checking and cleaning if necessary helps prevent infection. Labrador Retriever Care The lovable Lab needs to be around their family, and is definitely not a backyard dog. Labs show some variation in their activity levels, but all of them need activity, both physical and mental. Daily minute walks, a romp at the dog park, or a game of fetch, are a few ways to help your Lab burn off energy. However, a puppy should not be taken for too long walks and should play for a few minutes at a time. It is up to you to end play and training sessions. Without training, a rambunctious Lab puppy will soon grow to be a very large, rowdy dog. Luckily, Labs take to training well; in fact, they often excel in obedience competitions. Start with puppy kindergarten , which not only teaches your pup good canine manners, but helps them learn how to be comfortable around other dogs and people. Look for a class that uses positive training methods that reward the dog for getting it right, rather than punishing them for getting it wrong. Normal play on grass is fine, as is puppy agility, with its one-inch jumps. Labrador Retriever Feeding Recommended daily amount: 2. Vocality level 4 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament Few breeds so richly deserve their popularity as does the Labrador Retriever. When trained, the breed is obedient and amiable and tolerates the antics of children, other dogs, and other pets. The Lab is a calm house dog, playful yard dog, and intense field dog, all on the same day. Labs are eager to please, enjoys learning, and excel in obedience. It is a powerful breed that loves to swim and retrieve. Labradors need daily physical and mental challenges to keep occupied. A bored Lab can get into trouble! Upkeep Labradors are active and sociable dogs. They need daily exercise, preferably in the form of retrieving and swimming. Owners with swimming pools either must fence them out or be prepared to share the pool with dogs. The Lab coat sheds water easily. Weekly brushing is needed to remove dead hair. Health Major concerns: CHD, elbow dysplasia, OCD, obesity, patellar luxation Minor concerns: cataract, CPRA, hot spots, retinal dysplasia, hypothyroidism Occasionally seen: diabetes, entropion, distichiasis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse Suggested tests: hip, elbow, eye, exercise-induced collapse DNA , centronuclear myopathy , knee Life span: 10—12 years History The original Labradors were all-purpose water dogs originating in Newfoundland, not Labrador. Not only did the breed not originate in Labrador, but it also was not originally called the Labrador Retriever. These dogs—medium-sized black dogs with close hair—not only retrieved game but also retrieved fish, pulled small fishing boats through icy water and helped the fisherman in any task involving swimming. Eventually, the breed died out in Newfoundland in large part because of a heavy dog tax. However, a core of Labradors had been taken to England in the early s, and it is from these dogs, along with crosses to other retrievers, that the breed continued. It was also in England that the breed earned its reputation as an extraordinary retriever of upland game. Initially, black labs were favored over yellow or chocolate colors. By the early s, the other colors had become more accepted. The popularity of this breed has grown steadily until the Labrador Retriever became the most popular breed in America in and remains so today. Related Content. This was devastating news for my husband and I, but we knew we would continue loving and providing him with the best life possible. After several discussions, my husband and I decided that finding Hank a brother would be the perfect solution. The hunt was on, we knew we wanted another breed that was mixed with poodle. Not only because it eliminates shedding, but also because of their intelligence and faithfulness to their family. Although my husband and I had only ever had smaller breeds, we decided it was time for a change and began researching larger breeds. In the Summer of , I discovered a local family, the Bells, were going to have a litter of Bernedoodles. We had never heard of this breed. While researching the Bernedoodle, we discovered everything we were looking for; intelligent, affectionate, gentle, and loyal. I reached out to the Bells and told them my husband and I were interested in purchasing one, and asked if we could look at the litter. At Mid Missouri Bernedoodle the Bell family was extremely welcoming and invited us to come as long and as often as we wanted. The litter was just as precious in-person as they were in the pictures that were sent to us, but my eyes immediately fell in love with a little black puppy with four white paws. After our visit we went back home to discuss a little further, but we quickly realized that this puppy would be the perfect addition to our family. We brought Harold home and he immediately developed a bond with his brother, Hank. Harold quickly surpassed Hank in weight and overall size, but that has never affected their relationship. Harold is very sweet and observant, and notices when Hank needs a break from playing. Harold enjoys cuddling, long walks, other animals, and humans of all ages. He is very affectionate and protective, as he finds comfort in knowing where you are at all times. We are extremely grateful for all the help that the Bell family provided us while making this decision, and we could not be happier with our purchase. Haley Gilmore. Do you have any other pets? We have done this with every litter and right away the puppies choose to potty outside instead of where they sleep and play. lilac french bulldog puppies for sale uk - Also known as the Bull Pug, this medium-sized dog has a stocky and muscular build that is brought about by crossbreeding. Oftentimes, it is referred to as a miniature Bulldog because it is the spitting image of its parent. Note that this is just a nickname. This Pug Bulldog mix is the offspring of two popular dog breeds. You may be familiar with the English Bulldog and Pug because they are unique in terms of their physical appearance. English Bulldog History You probably know the English Bulldog as it is quite remarkable because of its wrinkled face. This medium-sized Mastiff-type dog traces its roots back to England, as its name suggests. Originally bred for bull-baiting in the s, the naturally nice English Bulldog was forced to be aggressive to fit this extreme sport. In bull-baiting, a dog is pitted against a bull inside a ring. After the ban of this sport in , breeders changed their attitude towards this breed and started to care for English Bulldogs so they may be good canine companions. Fast forward to the present, the English Bulldog is now known as a sweet and dependable dog great for families and children. Gone is its former aggressive reputation. Pug History The Pug is just as remarkable as the English Bulldog because of its similarly wrinkled face and sociable and charming temperament. Known as the pampered pets of Chinese rulers, the Pug breed was brought to Europe in the sixteenth century. This breed was equally treasured by nobles throughout the Western continent. It was popularly bred with one goal: to be a companion dog. To date, it is still a popular companion dog as it was centuries before. One thing is for sure, though. Putting together its two parent breeds was intentional, thus making it a designer breed. The English Bulldog and Pug were so popular that breeders wanted to have the characteristics of both breeds in one canine. The result of this crossbreeding is a playful companion dog with a wrinkled face which is known as the Pug English Bulldog mix. Some breeders and dog owners also wanted to have an English Bulldog that is smaller in size. One way for breeders to develop smaller versions of purebred dogs is to mix them with a smaller breed. Other examples of this crossbreeding practice are the miniature Rottweiler and the miniature Collie. Many names have been given to this hybrid like the mini Bulldog and Bull Pug and they are recognized by canine organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and Designer Breed Registry. As I mentioned earlier, the English Bulldog Pug mix is sometimes called a mini Bulldog and one look at this pup will tell you why. Most Bull Pugs come with a round head, broad shoulders, and a muscular and stocky body like that of their parents. In terms of its face, it has the signature wrinkles of both parents, a medium muzzle, and eyes that are black and shaped like almonds. It falls under the brachycephalic breed group which means that because of its skull, it will have a flat face and squished nose. This mix may even come with an underbite! The English Bulldog is medium-sized, typically 14 to 15 inches in height, while the Pug is around 10 to 13 inches. Putting these two together will give an offspring smaller than a regular Bulldog but bigger than a Pug. Your English Bulldog Pug mix may grow as tall as 10 to 14 inches and as heavy as 20 to 45 pounds. It does not need much space to move around. For as long as you take it on walks, it is good to go. These are coat color traits they inherit from their parents. A litter of five to seven can have a mix of these coat types. Fawn is light tannish yellow that may manifest in a wide range of shades. Dogs with this coat color may have a light shade like pale tan, dark shade like deep deer-red, or other shades in between. There are crossbreeds with fawn coats that have black areas around their muzzles like that of Pugs. There are also Pug English Bulldog mixes that have black coats. Mixed dogs with black coats typically have a solid black color throughout the body. The usual patches of piebald Bull Pugs are white with a red or fawn backdrop. There are dog owners who use the term piebald to refer to two-toned or bi-colored coats. The crossbreed that inherits this coat from the English Bulldog parent has a colored base with a striped pattern that resembles tiger stripes. Usually, brindle coats come in color groups like black and fawn, white and red, and other combinations. Both parent breeds of the English Bulldog Pug mix are great for families, making their crossbreed offspring a perfect family dog. Playful, affectionate, and sweet best describe the English Bulldog Pug mix as it enjoys being in the company of its loved ones. If you are a dog owner of this crossbreed, expect to have a loyal companion who loves having you around. In fact, it can go on without getting any attention from you for a certain period of time. If you have a laidback and sedentary lifestyle, this pup is for you because it does not move around so much. While it can get playful and energetic especially during playtime, this dog also enjoys chilling on the couch with its fur parents. Take a look at this video of a Bull Pug playing calmly with a bug: English Bull Dog Pug mix playing with Bug When it comes to children, this mix is also a good choice. Its English Bulldog parent has a reputation for being aggressive. However, this is just a misconception due to its bull-baiting history. The truth is that the English Bulldog is sweet-natured and gets along with kids. The Pug breed is also sociable which makes their mixed pup good with the little ones. Aside from kids, the English Bulldog Pug mix also enjoys mingling with other dogs. To ensure that your dog will be as friendly, start introducing other people and dogs even at a young age. Early socialization can help them turn into nice-mannered dogs. This pup may need a little bit of time for adjustment, though, when meeting strangers. Its parent breeds handle stranger dogs and humans differently. The English Bulldog may be wary of strangers and exercises caution when being approached. Quite the contrary, the Pug is friendly, sometimes to an extreme level. How your pup will react will depend on its training and the inherited temperament. Your crossbreed pup may get more temperament traits from either of its parents, but rest assured, you will get a pleasant-tempered pup that is a perfect addition to your family. English Bulldog Pug Mix Lifespan and Health Issues As fur parents, we all want our beloved pooches to live healthy lives and spend more years with us so we should be well-aware of the health risks that come with their breed. Several health issues concern the English Bulldog and Pug which their crossbred offspring might inherit. Most conditions are related to the respiratory system, bones and joints, and skin. The result is a pain in the limbs which may cause your dog to start limping. Patellar Luxation: Another orthopedic issue, patellar luxation concerns the patella or kneecap. Dogs with patellar luxation experience discomfort in their knees and in some cases, loss of function. This is because during knee-flexing, the patella rides outside the femoral groove. Brachycephaly Airway Obstructive Syndrome: The Brachycephaly Airway Obstructive Syndrome is a common health problem in brachycephalic or short-nosed dogs. Both parents of this mix have this flattened skull so they are prone to this. Symptoms include difficulty in breathing, vomiting, and loud snoring. Pug Dog Encephalitis: The neurological disease called Pug Dog Encephalitis happens when brain tissues are inflamed causing pups to experience seizures, behavioral changes, disorientation, and more. This usually hits Pugs that are two to three years of age but may also occur as early as six months or as late as seven years old. No known cause has been found for this kind of encephalitis. Cherry Eye: Dogs have a third eyelid called the nictitating membrane. Diabetes: Diabetes is a common problem in dogs, but there are more incidents in Pugs. Because diabetic dogs are unable to regulate sugars in their bodies, they need insulin shots to help them do so. Canine Atopy: Getting allergies is common to Pugs and in some cases, they have a hypersensitivity reaction when exposed to allergens called canine atopy. Affected areas are usually the paws, abdomen, face, ears, chest, armpits, and flanks. Basic needs for canines are food, shelter, grooming, and training. However, these needs vary from one breed to another. What the Chihuahua needs may not exactly be the same as what your English Bulldog Pug mix needs. Knowing what your pup needs allows you to give it the best care possible. Feeding and Diet To ensure that you have a healthy pup, only give good quality dry dog food to your Pug Bulldog mix. On a daily basis, this crossbreed needs about calories to be served in two split meals. You may also consider giving homemade food. Cooked vegetables like spinach, carrots, asparagus, and sweet potatoes are good for your crossbreed dog. You may also give fruits like bananas, apples, and mangoes. Always remember to remove pits and seeds before serving. Besides giving your English Bulldog Pug mix the right kind of food, you should also monitor its food intake. Both parents are prone to obesity. While a chubby pup looks very cute, it is not healthy and may lead to many problems and complications. If you are starting to notice that your pup is getting underweight or overweight, consult your vet to get a diet recommendation. Cleaning and Grooming Short coats can be seen in both the English Bulldog and Pug and the same for their crossbreed pup. Use a soft brush to keep the coat beautiful and healthy and to avoid hurting your dog. Aside from its coat, you should also pay attention to the wrinkles on its face and body. Bacteria may start to build up when left unclean so be sure to wipe and bathe when necessary. This is also to avoid infections and allergies which they may be prone to. On top of that, regularly trim the nails and clean the eyes and ears. Brushing is also important and should be added to your grooming routine. Doing all these will help prevent infections and keep your dog healthy and happy. Training and Exercise English Bulldog Pug mixes are laidback and chill. If you do not enjoy too much physical activity, this crossbreed is for you because its exercise needs are not too high. A minute walk is already enough for this mixed breed plus enough playtime and bonding. Early morning and evening are said to be the best time for walks and exercise. Remember that both parent breeds are brachycephalic which means their offspring will be too. They cannot handle heat well and are prone to overheating. When walking, ensure that you have drinking water ready. In terms of trainability, this mix can learn tricks and commands. However, you need to have patience during training as it can get a little too stubborn. This is probably a trait inherited from its parents. Be firm when you train your pup but also not too strict. Have fun and consider training as bonding time. Do you know that the secret to successful training is positive reinforcement? Dogs listen and obey more when they are rewarded for good behavior. Prepare those treats for your training time! There may also be more expensive ones especially when you buy from a reputable breeder. Factors that may affect cost include size, health, breeder reputation, and lineage. There are also mixes from champion bloodlines but prepare to shell more. When choosing a breeder to buy a mixed pup from, consider a lot of things such as the affiliation of your breeder. Puppy mills are everywhere and they have poor practices and little care for their dogs, thus, low prices. Avoid them as much as possible. Caring for a pup entails other expenses aside from the cost of the dog itself. Prepare for one-time costs such as a leash, harness or collar, bed, toys, and the like. You also have regular expenses such as food, treats, and grooming items. For new pups, you have to spend for neutering or spaying, vaccinations, and deworming. However, they are also not highly common so you have to check the availability of this crossbreed: Greenfield Puppies — Fur parents have been trusting Greenfield Puppies since .They connect reputable breeders with interested soon-to-be owners and carry both purebred and mixed puppies. Both crossbreeds share some physical characteristics and low exercise requirements. Puggle: A mix of the Pug and Beagle, the Puggle is a smart crossbreed that likes playing. It is also good for families because it gets along well with kids. Unlike the Bull Pug, the Puggle does not enjoy staying put and is highly active and energetic. Poxer: The Poxer is the offspring of a Pug and a Boxer. This medium-sized designed breed is charming and lively. Fit for those with active lifestyles, this crossbreed loves physical activities. Both parent breeds of this mix are brachycephalic which also makes this dog one. Since a mix can take on any combination of traits from their parents, you want to make sure you ask the breeder about the other parent breed in the mix. Should an English Bulldog Mix take after their Bulldog parent, they will be sweet-natured, affectionate, and playful dogs that love being with their families. English Bulldogs are companion breeds that are known for being sweethearts. As long as they are socialized properly, they tend to be excellent with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although watchful, they are even agreeable to strangers once they have been introduced. If the other parent breed has a similar temperament, then you should be able to expect the same from an English Bulldog Mix. You still want to talk to the breeder about the other parent as they are likely to introduce their own quirks. Meeting the mother in person can give you an idea of her temperament and the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. Although the breeder should have started some training and socialization, it is your responsibility to continue training and socializing a puppy once you get them home to ensure they grow into a well-rounded, well-behaved dog. Although English Bulldogs adapt to most living situations, they are sensitive to hot and cold, and are particularly sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. This makes them a moderately adaptable dog breed. The other parent breed could introduce some traits that affect adaptability so you do want to ask the breeder about them. A mix could inherit conditions common to neither of their parent breeds, one of them, or even both of them. From the English Bulldog, potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Bulldog Mix include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Entropion, and Cherry Eye. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to prevent passing issues to puppies, so make sure you are asking about the health history of both of the parents. Although English Bulldogs can be stubborn, they are generally eager to please and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to be a good fit for owners of all experience levels and respond well to consistent training that is focused on positive reward and praise. If the other parent breed is also highly trainable, then you should be able to expect the same from an English Bulldog Mix. The other parent breed could also introduce the potential for an English Bulldog Mix that is more difficult to train. Mixed-breed dogs can inherit a coat that is a carbon copy of one of their parents or they can end up with a coat that is truly a mix of both. Should an English Bulldog Mix end up with a Bulldog coat, they will shed moderately year-round, require brushing a couple of times a week, and the occasional bath. If they have face wrinkles, you will need to make sure they are clean and dry regularly to prevent skin irritation. Cutting nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Ear checks on a weekly basis with careful ear cleanings as needed helps prevent ear infections. Daily brushing or use of an enzyme toothpaste is ideal dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. English Bulldogs tend to be lower-energy breeds that only require daily walks and some playtime to be happy. But, they will be energetic when they play and might be up for more activity if you are. The other parent breed can affect this. If they are a low-energy breed, then you can expect an English Bulldog Mix to be the same. If the other parent breed requires more daily activity, then you will need to be prepared for that potential range in an English Bulldog Mix puppy. Because they may still be a brachycephalic dog breed, they can overheat, so you want to be careful of overexertion. There are many safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs to help your English Bulldog Mix get the exercise they need. Fully-grown English Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. An English Bulldog generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed could affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in an English Bulldog Mix. Featured English Bulldog Mix Article.
