Degenerative myelopathy DM is a chronic spinal cord condition characterized by progressive deterioration of the spinal cord. What are the symptoms of degenerative myelopathy? Degenerative myelopathy typically occurs in dogs older than 5 to 6 years of age, and manifests as weakness in one or both hind limbs that slowly progresses to paralysis of both hind limbs over several months. In time, dogs will eventually become paralyzed in the front limbs and develop fecal and urinary incontinence. The condition is not painful. How is it diagnosed? Degenerative myelopathy DM can only definitively be diagnosed by identifying classic microscopic changes in the spinal cord on autopsy. DM is strongly suspected in dogs where all other causes for neurologic disease are ruled out. The diagnosis of DM is made with a combination of history, neurologic examination, radiology, and genetic testing. Dogs will have a history of slowly progressive, non-painful weakness and ataxia wobbly gait coupled with muscle atrophy reduction in muscle mass. X-Rays and MRI are typically done to look for other causes of progressive weakness, including cancer and chronic intervertebral disc disease. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis usually shows an increase in protein. It is not uncommon for dogs with degenerative myelopathy to also have chronic disc disease, and deciding whether the gait abnormality is due to compression from chronic disc disease or potential degenerative myelopathy can be difficult in some dogs. Recently, DM has been associated with a genetic mutation in the superoxide dismutase gene, which acts as an anti-oxidant. There is currently a genetic test available through the University of Missouri to identify carriers of this genetic mutation. Dogs that carry the mutation may potentially have the disease; however, it is important to understand that having the mutation does not equal having DM. The mutation is very prevalent in certain breeds i. It is unlikely that dogs that do not have the genetic mutation will have DM. The genetics of DM is very complicated may differ amongst different breeds of dogs. How is degenerative myelopathy treated? Unfortunately, there is no proven effective treatment for degenerative myelopathy. The only treatment that has shown any benefit is regular physical therapy to potentially delay the progression of neurologic signs. Various supplements, stem cell therapy, and diets have been suggested but have never been scientifically proven to be effective. What is the prognosis? Degenerative myelopathy progresses at different rates in each animal, but as there is no effective treatment prognosis is guarded. Many owners opt to purchase hind limb carts to allow their dogs to be mobile when unable to use the hind limbs. Continence is usually retained until the end stages of the disease. When a dog inherits two copies of the mutated SOD1 gene from its parents, cells that send and receive brain signals begin to break down, which results in Degenerative Myelopathy symptoms. When the disease was first identified, it was believed to exclusively affect German Shepherd dogs. However, it is now understood that any breed can be affected, although some breeds are more prone to the condition than others. It has been known for several years that the Bernese have this additional marker, or risk factor, that is generally restricted to the breed. This is not to say that this marker is the sole cause of Degenerative Myelopathy in that breed, or that the SOD1-A mutation is irrelevant as a risk factor in the breed. Using a simple swab from the inner cheek of your dog, we will ascertain whether or not your dog carries the genetic mutation that is likely to develop into the condition. We will also inform you whether or not your dog is a carrier of the mutation, which allows you to make an informed choice as to whether or not to breed from the dog. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Mandy went everywhere with us. We lived on acres along the Calapooia River where the children would explore with Mandy at their side. Our 2 boys were passionate about the outdoors and loved to hunt and wanted a specific dog to train. It wasnt hard to convince their mom, but took a little longer to convince me. But convince me they did. They chose a male and of course named him 'Big Red'. The boys did an amazing job training the 3 dogs. We had the 4 dogs and plenty time and attention to offer them with the energy and passion from the 4 children. Cody and Mandy had their first litter of puppies in .The puppies were all healthy and delightful. The experience was just as my wife remebered as a child and she was happy that our children were able to enjoy the same experience. It was rewarding to place the puppies in wonderful homes. The pleasure and excitment the families portrayed as they picked up their puppy was addicting. The friendships we gained were rich. Ginger, trained by Josiah, was the cleverest dog we ever had. We were planning to breed Ginger with Cody. In the summer of Ginger came into heat so we would put Ginger and Cody in seperate kennels, on a cement slab, when we went to town. We were waiting for her to be in midcycle to breed her. I came home at dusk, one night, and let her out and she immediatly disappeard. We ran for a flashlight and found her in Big Red's Kennel. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. Through our hard won experience we are able to consistently breed Golden Irishes to our own very high standards. Along with exercise, they need mental stimulation. They are easily trained and love to please their owners. If you enjoy your alone time, this is not the breed for you, but if you love to have a furry best friend always by your side then you should consider a Golden. Goldens love to spend time with their humans and are always eager to do anything with you. Wherever you go, they will follow, even to the bathroom. We have a collection of tennis balls in the backyard that Ellie has found throughout our neighbourhood and on our walking trail. Goldens are extroverts and very social. They enjoy meeting new people and making friends with everyone they meet. They need and crave human companionship, this is not the type of dog that you can leave home alone for long periods of time. If left alone too long, they will get bored and destructive, and become depressed. A Golden Retriever will have no problem with walking up to a stranger to say hi and get petted. They will make it seem like they never get any attention at home. They are definitely not shy. Personally, I have met and gotten to know so many people because of my dog Ellie. Never being bored may sound like a good thing, but at times you will pray for boring. Goldens have a way of easily getting themselves into trouble and keeping you on your toes. You may find yourself chasing them around the house for those clean socks they stole out of the laundry, or stopping them from eating food off of your plate, or trying to stop them from digging in the backyard. No matter what, they will always find a way to make you laugh. My Ellie tries to outsmart us, and oftentimes she does. For instance when we go walking she knows that she gets a treat every time she pees, something that we did since she was a puppy and she has tried to do a fake pee in order to get a treat. My dog will eat anything and everything. As a dog owner, this is very frustrating. When you are out walking your dog, and your dog will eat anything off the ground and it is almost always bad for them. So many times my dog has eaten something questionable, and no matter what you do it happens so fast. Goldens love food, and you really have to watch what they eat, as they can easily become overweight. They will sit and stare at you while you are eating, hoping that you will give them something, or that something will fall on the floor for them. It is hard not to give in to their sad puppy dog eyes, but keeping them at an ideal weight will keep them healthier and they will live longer. They Need Regular Grooming In order to keep a Golden looking their best, they need to be groomed regularly. Brushing should be done on a daily basis to prevent any mats and tangles, and to keep the coat looking clean and healthy. Brushing regularly will also help to reduce some of the shedding. Bathing should be done regularly as well to keep a Golden clean and smelling good. Goldens have floppy ears which can be prone to ear infections, so ears should be cleaned regularly, and nails trimmed as well. It is never recommended to shave a Golden , but their coat can be trimmed to keep them looking neat. The grooming requirements of a Golden Retriever may be more demanding than that of other dogs, but it is not difficult and can easily be done by the owner at home. Collar, Harness, Or Both? Lab puppies start tiny but grow up extremely fast. Every pup grows up at its own tempo. If it has started to get too constricting at that point — either loosen it up if possible or get a new collar. If you get a collar with a lot of resizing leeway, it can last you a few months. This is very easy to judge if you just stick a couple of fingers under the collar. The risk of keeping an overly loose collar on your dog should be clear — the dog will be able to back out of the collar. Many others, however, including a lot of labs, love to back out of their collars whenever possible. Adult Labrador Neck Size So, what size collar will your lab puppy end up wearing when it grows up? If your puppy is smaller than average it may grow into a smaller-than-average adult lab or it may just be a slow grower. Different Types Of Dog Collars For Labs The main non-cosmetic differences between dog collars are in the materials and the fastening mechanism. Plus, they always allow for multiple different size settings. As for materials, these are the basics: Metal — a lot of people love metal, especially for mid-sized to large breeds like Labradors. Leather — this is the classic choice for dog collars. Its main drawback is that it can get stinky over time. This is especially true if your dog loves to swim and Labrador retrievers are a water dog breed. Fabric collars can come in a lot of different designs and compositions. Some of the more colorful ones are especially fun for puppies. Synthetic polyurethane-type materials — these intuitively put off some people but are an excellent choice. Training collars used to be very popular at one point for both puppies and adult dogs. These collars take many different forms — they can be pronged, pinching, and electro-shock collars. Their idea is simple — teach your dog not to pull on its leash with the negative reinforcements of the collar. Dog harnesses today are viewed as a better and safer alternative to training collars. These are used mostly for training and for adult dogs, however. You should start using those as soon as your pup is big enough. Flat Or Round Collar? Personally, I think a classic flat style of collar looks best on the classic looking Labrador. So I recommend flat leather or Nylon webbing collars, with ID attached and a quick-release fastening for everyday use. These collars are designed to force open during a struggle if your Labrador should ever get their collar snagged and are a real life saver in these situations. English Labradors are larger than American Labradors, males are larger than females, genetics play a part and some labs carry more weight than others. But you need to know what width of collar best suits a Labrador, and then measure their neck to know the correct size. The width of a collar has a direct relationship to the amount of pressure the collar puts on your Labradors neck. But of course, a wider collar is heavier and can be uncomfortably rigid so you have to strike a balance. Also, very wide collars can look a bit silly on all but the very largest of dogs. My recommendation? A good 1. As a general rule of thumb, this means you want to measure the circumference of your Labs neck with a measuring tape and then add 2 inches. For example:You measure your Labradors neck to be 18 inches. Add 2 inches for a correct fit making the collar you need 20 inches. So for our example, we want to buy a collar with 20 inches in the center of what the collar says it fits. We should buy for instance, a collar to fit necks from 18 to 22 inches as 20 is in the middle and gives room for adjustment each way. This creates a scenario where pulling causes a punishment and will decrease the behavior over time. Using them incorrectly and especially if ill-fitting, these collars can cause considerable harm and are considered by nearly all to be inhumane and should be avoided. However, there are some old-school, traditional trainers who swear by them in extreme cases, for strong and stubborn hard pullers when all other training avenues have failed. Having said that though, like most people, we do not condone them, believe they are inhumane and will not promote their use on this site. This collar can be very dangerous to use with the potential to cause permanent damage to your Labrador if used incorrectly. So extreme caution and education is needed before anybody ever considers using this collar. However, like the prong collar, we do not condone them and believe they should never be used and will not be promoted here. How to Use Training Collars If anybody does ever decide to use a prong or choke collar, please have a professional trainer show you how first. The idea is definitely not to asphyxiate the dog into submission! Luckily there are now many methods to train a Labrador to walk nicely beside you without the use of such collars. Therefore I will rarely discuss their use on this site and certainly do not recommend their purchase or use. No exceptions please, always remove these collars when not training! There are also slip leads, harnesses, and halters to consider that are more suitable for use in specific situations. These are often used by working dog owners who want to avoid a traditional collar as they can be a choking hazard on a dog that spends time running through undergrowth. The harnesses I would recommend are front clipped no pull solution dog harnesses that are a good choice for those with Labs that are determined pullers. This contrasts with a back clip harness where a dog can really put his whole weight and strength into pulling, such as the harnesses you see on a husky! Head Halters A halter for a dog looks much like a halter for a horse and has the same use. With a halter, when you or your Labrador pulls on the leash their head is pulled downwards or off to the side. This makes it very hard for the dog to pull forward as this would cause their head to be pulled even further down or to the side. This results in the dog stopping and over time teaches them that pulling only leads to stopping so they soon learn not to pull. So a halter is a useful training aid for walking a Labrador that pulls obsessively. But paths, fields and parks are mostly unlit and this is a dangerous situation for your Labrador to be in. Wearing a high visibility or even LED collar eliminates this danger and allows everybody to see where your Labrador is in the dark. During this check, also make sure the collar is adjusted to fit well as your dogs weight and coat thickness may fluctuate between seasons. A Few Final Tips! Bacteria can grow under a sweaty damp collar, taking it off regularly will help decrease this and the associated, very unwanted smell! I actually recommend the purchase of 3 different collars for 3 different uses. For everyday use, I recommend a flat collar with a quick release or buckle fastener, made from leather or synthetic fibers. For when you take your lab out swimming or hiking, I recommend a quick release collar no belt style buckle or rope slip-lead, removing the possibility of a collar snagging and becoming a choke risk. Finally, I recommend a high visibility collar for wearing in the dark, so you and others can more easily see your dog which can help prevent accidents on dark country roads and paths, whilst helping you not to lose sight of him and worry all the time. If you find it difficult to keep your dog still, just get someone to dip their fingers in some butter and let the dog lick it off while you take his measurements! Collars for adult Labs are usually about an inch wide — this allows enough space for a small ID plaque if desired. What Size Collar for a Lab Puppy? If you buy a puppy collar two or three inches longer than this it will last him a few weeks. Puppy collars are usually narrower than adult collars, half an inch is fine. Buying a Harness The breadth of choice in body harnesses for dogs has burgeoned in the last couple of years as people discover how great they are. A body harness is an excellent way to restrain a young dog that has not been taught to walk to heel. It has several advantages over a collar. It is almost impossible for the dog to slip out of. And most importantly, a puppy that wears a harness is not learning to lean into or pull, on his collar. She can be an only-pet, but has also done with in small play groups with submissive, younger males and females. She cannot be placed with other dominant dogs, and has a small-prey drive, so no cats. She can sometimes be kennel reactive when she is crated and hassled by another dog that she doesn't like in her current foster home [dominant temperament male]. Posie is typically a gentle girl with her handlers in boarding, with a soft mouth for treats, and an affectionate, cuddly personality. Posie does have a high small prey drive, and cannot be around either small dogs or cats. She does struggle with some issues of selective reactivity, and would prefer to be in an only pet home. If he knows you he will want your attention and he will bug you until you give it to him. He wants to be a lap dog as well. Colby is a happy boy, he just wants to enjoy his home and all the thing he loves, food, his ball, his Buffalo horns, and hanging with his people. Because he is tentative with new people and dogs, he would not be a good candidate for dog parks, doggy day care, Home Depot visits or camping. Colby needs a home with no cats, but he has been in a household with a small dog and did very well. Sponsor Meet Toshi-in memory Toshi is one of the greatest dogs I have ever had the pleasure to have in my home. She loved everybody and was especially gentle with even a one year old. She was an outside dog but very quickly learned all the perks of becoming an inside dog. Toshi is dead today because during her time as an outside dog her owners did not feel it necessary to provide her with heartworm prevevtative. By the time she came to us her heartworm disease was so far advanced she never would have survived the treatment. We didn't know how bad it was until the day her organs started to fail. We had to make the heartbreaking decision that day to put her to sleep. She was still her sweet self, eating treats and giving everyone kisses even though she had to be in pain. What a waste of a life. Her heart full of worms in now on display at our vet's office to show people what can happen if they choose not to treat their dog with preventative.
