Once you have a Boxer, that's it. You're in love and he's won your heart over. He makes life so fun, he's so darn amusing and you can't imagine life without him. It makes perfect sense to add another to your family… You are familiar with the breed and you know what to expect. While two may mean a bit more work, it certainly means twice the love. Sure, the Boxer looks all tough and strong, but inside he's a big child. And that child does not want to be home all alone in your home while you're at work. One of the most common reasons for having more than one Boxer dog is to offer a close companion to the established one. This is not uncommon if a Boxer has Separation Anxiety problems. In some cases, a Boxer may have depression after losing a canine companion or if a human family member has left the house, etc. As long as steps are taken to ensure that they get along well more ahead this usually works out quite well. Homes with two Boxers are often happy homes and the dogs are truly best friends. While this page mainly focuses on the fun and hiccups of having two Boxers, a Boxer can get along well other breeds, including those outside of his size classification. There are some that can do great just about any other breed at all. Reasons to Delay Adding another Boxer There are a few things to keep in mind before adding another dog to the home and some steps to take to help make the transition a smooth one. In a case like this, we would recommend spending some time working with him on socialization skills either in class or simply by introducing him to other dogs in the park. This way, an otherwise isolated dog can have the chance to prove that he does well with other dogs. It is the canine way more ahead on how to help them with this. But in order for this to happen, both dogs and certainly the one that is already established in the house needs to know that the human s are the true leaders. How to Keep Both Boxers Happy There is typically a transition time in which the dogs will have to get used to having the other permanently there. While they may have gotten along nicely when meeting, now that they are in the same house, they will be feeling each other out and needing to get a few things straight. Who's the Leader - The most important element touched on above is that while the human must be seen as the one true leader, among the two Boxer dogs, there will also be a leader. One Boxer will be more dominate than the other. It may make sense at first to assume that the established one will be in charge. However this is not always the case. Also, some assume that the male - no matter his age - will take dominance over the female; this is also not always true. In most cases, the Boxer that was there first - and especially if he is older - will be the one. Most dogs will figure this out on their own. There may be a transitional time when one tries to take a toy and the Boxer that really wants to be in charge will put the other in his place with nudging or a snap in the air. Only intervene if it appears it will endanger one of them. With most, there will be a bruised ego and nothing more. Separate Spaces for Twins - Once the issue of hierarchy is complete this usually happens within just a week or two , you will now have two dogs that are inseparable. It could be when a female is in heat and is feeling a bit moody… or an older dog may do well with a younger Boxer until he reaches a point of just needing a break. For this reason, have two separate dog beds or other comfortable area for either puppy or dog to retreat to if they wish. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are without a doubt some of the friendliest little dogs in the world. They are charismatic, fun and loyal. They also have a fairly good average lifespan of 11 years. However, there are a couple of big, scary health problems associated with large numbers of this breed, so be very careful and do a lot of research if you are thinking of bringing one into your home. Health problems impacting a vast quantity of these little dogs include mitral valve disease , a heart problem which causes early death, and syringomyelia. This is a neurological problem caused by the size and shape of their skulls, not allowing their brain and brain stem to be properly accommodated. Due to their size, they are not really recommended for homes with young children or frail adults. Bernese Mountain Dogs are very large, growing up to 28 inches tall and weigh up to pounds. They also have a long coat, which requires a lot of grooming to keep in a good condition. Unfortunately like many extra large breeds, Bernese Mountain Dogs do not have very long life expectancies, averaging around 8 years long. When looking at longevity size is a big factor, and giant breed dogs regardless of whether they are mix bred or not will have shorter lifespans. You could therefore expect to see your puppy potential live fewer years than the average purebred Lab. They are utterly beautiful dogs, and if well managed can make wonderful companions. Labmaraner The Weimaraner is a beautiful dog, and an intelligent one too. Like all members of the gun dog group he has been bred with co-operative working in mind. Although he tends to be slightly less people focussed in general than your average Lab. This means that they are not as obsessed with greeting everyone when you take them for a walk. However, they can also be a little harder to engage in the training process and in some cases be even more driven than a Labrador. Like Labs, Weimaraners can also be prone to separation anxiety when left alone for long periods. Labradoodle Labradoodles are the most popular Labrador Retriever designer dog breed at the moment. A Labradoodle will not necessarily be a non-shedding dog, and may require some extreme grooming or very regular visits to the poodle parlour in order to not become matted. Pitbull Lab Mix The Pitbull Lab mix should be a great family dog, full of energy, with a short, easy care coat. Rottador or Labrottie Rottweilers crossed with Labradors are known as Labrotties. Or Rottadors. And they can be incredibly beautiful and dedicated companions to their families. Rottweilers can be up to around 27 inches tall, with big heads, deep chests and well muscled bodies. They are powerful dogs and need commitment to positive training from day one from their families in order to understand how to behave in their homes. Rottweiler temperament is also quite different to that of your average Labrador Retriever. There is no way of knowing which of his parents your Labrottie will take after. Rottweilers are a guarding breed. Extremely loyal to their family, but known to be wary of strangers and unpredictable around children if improperly socialised and managed. Your Labrottie puppy must be very well socialised, just as you would with a pure guarding breed dog. Make sure he has regular positive contact with people of every age, and is familiar with things like beards, hats and unusual items of clothing. Springador Springer Spaniels crossed with Labs are often referred to as Springadors. They can make fabulous pets or working dogs, but can have the extremes of both breeds. They are not for the inexperienced or inactive owner. Springers are very lively dogs with an incredibly high prey and hunting drive. They benefit from positive reinforcement training from an early age. In general Springers have great temperaments. However, there are some working lines which have nervous aggression problems and fixations on light chasing. Make sure that you meet the Springer parent to ensure that they are confident and not agitated. English Springer Spaniels tend to be smaller and lighter than Labs, with a longer coat. Springadors often have shorter coats, and can look a lot like a slightly shaggy black Lab with a few white markings. Lab Mix Temperament When you buy a mixed breed dog, their temperament will be a product of their varying lineage. They could end up with any mixture of the two lines temperaments, or something completely different. Make sure to meet both parents to ensure that they are confident, friendly characters. If your Labrador is a known cross, then you can make an educated guess that he could be anywhere between the average sizes for those breeds. However, it not always the case. And with a Labrador mixed with unknown other dogs, then they really could be any size at all. The Labrador element to their genetics does not limit their growth. Lab Mix Health Mix breed dogs can still be susceptible to the diseases carried by their parents. Especially if those diseases are common in both breeds. A little bit of brushing can go a long way. It removes loose hair, and helps to re-affirm the bond between you and your dog, as they enjoy the attention and can even find the grooming to be relaxing. Bathing your dog should be kept to a minimum as the shampoos and warm water can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions. Instead take your dog for swims or use lukewarm water to rinse off their coats. If they are just dirty with dust and mud, use lukewarm water or a running hose to wash away the dirt. Alternatively encourage them to swim in a body of water such as a river or at the beach while under your supervision. As a precautionary measure you can get a life jacket for your labradoodle. When you do need to give them a proper bath, use a mild oatmeal or coconut based dog shampoo. It will strip away some of the oils from their coat, but these types of shampoos will help to keep the skin moisturized. Over bathing can lead to skin irritations that can be itchy and uncomfortable. Dogs do not need to have baths as much as humans need to. The hair of the lower legs is kept slightly longer and is blended in with the rest of the body. The face and ears are trimmed short, giving your doodle a puppy-like appearance. This haircut is a lot like a teddy bear cut. The difference is that the teddy bear cut usually refers to doodles with a curly coat, and the puppy coat usually refers to dogs with a smooth coat.
