They just have a special ability to know their owner's emotional needs. They are intuitive, smart, athletic, easy to train love bugs! Australian labradoodles have been very carefully genetically tested to give you the best dog possible. American labradoodles are crosses between poodle and labrador and their backcrosses. Coats and conformation are not stable. First generations are likely to shed. They can have the personality of a poodle, lab or both. When the lines are carefully chosen their temperament can be just as wonderful as an Australian Labradoodle. All Labradoodles are NOT non-shedding or hypoallergenic. It is very important that you do your homework and know what it is you are looking for and what you are getting. Ask about the parent's testing, their pedigree, their temperaments. As a breeder, it takes a great deal of time, patience, and money to raise healthy, happy labradoodles with wonderful temperaments which is then passed down to the puppies that will go on to be your much loved family pet. General Appearance: The Australian Labradoodle will have an athletic and graceful, yet, compact body. They should not appear heavy or overly fine. A distinctive feature of this breed is their coat, which is non-shedding and easy to manage. Movement: Trotting gait is effortless, smooth, powerful, and coordinated in mature dogs. Sound free movement and a light gait are vital. The sizes are measured to the withers top of the shoulder blades. Soundness is very important. Weight range tends to be 15 to 25 pounds. Medium 17" TO 20": The "Ideal" size for a medium female is 17 to 19 inches and for a male 19 to 20 inches. Weight range tends to be 30 to 45 pounds. Standard: 21" TO 24": The "Ideal" size for a standard female is 21 to 23 inches and for a male 22 to 24 inches. Weight range tends to be 50 to 65 pounds. The low to non-shedding is a big plus and adds to the allergy-free factor. All the Labradoodles we breed and offer for sale will have beautiful coats. The following are the three kinds of coats all Labradoodles have: COATS: Coat types are also still very sporadic with many dogs showing a combination of multiple types. Both the Fleece and the Wool coat should naturally grow in "staples" and be of a soft texture. Both the "Ideal" Fleece and Wool coats spin successfully. It comes in many styles, straight open fleece, wavy fleece, to spiral fleece. This coat is easy to maintain, but must be brushed in order to remain mat-free. There should be no body odor with this coat and very little to NO shedding. WOOL: These coats are denser to the feel more like a sheep's wool. The sprung wool coat is not preferred. To keep the wool coat long and flowing will require more maintenance. If this coat is kept short, it is very easy to maintain, but also requires regular grooming to avoids matting. There is no body odor with this coat. HAIR: Hair textures shed and are unwanted. There will be some shedding with this coat, although it could be minor shedding. This is not a coat for anyone with allergies or asthma. Black noses will have black lips and dark eyes. Frontline for Puppies — 3 pack 8 weeks and older, 23 — 44lbs Like Advantix, I still get fleas on my dog with Frontline. That said, I will continue using it as it does help. You need a prescription to get this and it is very expensive. You may not need to go through such great lengths if you live in a suburban area. Most people use this as an alternative to Advantix or Frontline; I use it in addition to those topical treatments. Treating the Yard Treating the yard is just as important as treating the inside of your house and your dog. The products below WILL kill the fleas in your yard. If you do not kill the fleas in your yard, they WILL get back on the dog, even if you have an indoor dog that only goes outside to go potty. The fleas will be waiting in the grass and will leap right onto their fur. There could be better products, but i have been using these two for years now and they keep fleas and ticks off of my yard. They are literally a lifesaver. Conquer Insecticide This bottle on Amazon will last you a few years. Now we are getting to the good stuff. I use this to treat the yard. A friend came down with Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever as well. I quit screwing around and went with the chemicals. This was honestly a very last resort for me. Last spring I sprayed my yard with this in combination with Archer IGR below and it lasted the entire year. I repeat: This is one of those cases where you DO need to follow instructions. This is used in combination with Conquer above. What is an IGR, you ask? IGRs prevent an insect from reaching maturity. This helps with infestations because immature insects cannot reproduce. Be sure to read the instructions on this thoroughly. This is heavy duty stuff and if you use it wrong you will regret it. When used with Conquer, insects will die and not come back for many many months. To crid your home of fleas you will need to vacuum along every corner of your home; this means getting where the floor meets the wall underneath the couch. Clean under the couch cushions. But, do use the product carefully and do follow the instructions properly. Cypermethrin is the active ingredient here and people on Amazon say they use this to kill everything from red ants to scorpions. You can use the above IGR in your home, but I am personally afraid to. That said, Tekko works and is really high tech stuff, and the only IGR out there with two ingredients to kill flea babies: Pyriproxyfen is a juvenile hormone analog, while novaluron is a novel chitin synthesis inhibitor. An IGR in combination with an insecticide works wonders. Understanding the flea life cycle You are at war with the fleas and you must know your enemy. They are playful and loyal. Although Boxers were originally bred as working dogs, they make the perfect family pet. Boxers are different from each other but one trait that all Boxers have in common is their playfulness. Boxers, whether they're puppies or ones in their senior years, possess a youthful exuberance that is unmatched by any other breed of dog. Boxers have the natural ability to make their masters smile and fill a household with fun and laughter. Natural Born Entertainers Ask Boxer owners about what they think would be the most fitting profession or job for Boxer dogs and they'd likely tell you that Boxers make the perfect clowns. Boxers are natural entertainers wiggling, wagging and doing their funny antics. If you've ever been around a Boxer, you'll find it very hard to keep yourself from grinning. Put a Boxer in a room with someone in a bad mood and it will waste no time showing off its tricks to make a person laugh. One of the more familiar tricks Boxers are known for is kidney beaning, a dance they do whenever they are excited. No owner could resist smiling whenever he comes home after a hard day's work and sees his Boxer doing this dance. It isn't a bark although it is similar. Boxers are natural entertainers even when they are running. Don't be surprised to see a Boxer twist, jump and even do summersaults while it is out on a walk. However, Boxers aren't for everyone. If you're looking for a dog that will lie quietly at the foot of your bed or sleep most of the day, a Boxer is not the dog for you. Boxers are very energetic and they need plenty of attention. If a Boxer doesn't get adequate exercise every day, it can turn to doing destructive things or find ways to entertain itself like chewing on shoes. Boxers need to be walked or jogged twice a day at the minimum. In addition, they need mental stimulation. This cross means that Australian Shepherd Mix puppies can have the traits of an Australian Shepherd, the other dog breed in the cross, or any combination of both of the parent breeds. On the Australian Shepherd side, you have a loving, loyal, dedicated, and high-energy working dog that also makes a great pet for an active family. This, in addition to meeting the puppy and the mother dog in-person, will give you a good idea of what to expect in your puppy. If the Australian Shepherd Mix takes after the Australian Shepherd, they will be a highly intelligent and highly active dog that loves to be doing things with their families. Although Australian Shepherds are high-energy working dogs with herding instincts built-in, they tend to get along well with children and are highly protective of their families, which makes them good watchdogs and guard dogs. They can be wary and suspicious of strangers and other dogs, but with socialization early and often, they can take on a more open and friendly nature. Asking the breeder about the other parent breed in the cross will give you a better idea of what temperament to expect in your Australian Shepherd Mix puppy. Puppies raised in the same litter will often learn how to behave from their mother, so meeting the mother dog in-person will also give you a good idea of what sort of temperament your puppy might have. Depending on the other dog breed in the cross, the Australian Shepherd Mix is likely to be highly adaptable. An Australian Shepherd can adapt to large homes with plenty of space to run as well as smaller apartments, as long as they are given plenty of exercise and attention. They also do well in both cold and warm climates. This could change a bit depending on the other parent breed, but asking the breeder about the parents is a good way to determine what to expect. The Australian Shepherd is a relatively healthy dog breed, but there are some potential health issues to be aware of. These include deafness, allergies, cancer, hypothyroidism, epilepsy , and sensitivity to certain drugs. Talking with the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parent breeds, any breed-specific issues with the other parent breed, and asking to see any health clearances can help allay several potential health concerns. Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent, tend to be sensitive to their owners, and are innately eager to please. If the Australian Shepherd Mix takes after their Australian Shepherd parent, they will be a good fit for an owner of any experience level. The grooming level to expect in an Australian Shepherd Mix will depend heavily on the parent breeds in the cross. An Australian Shepherd does shed year-round with two heavier seasonal shedding sessions and will require regular brushing to maintain a healthy coat. If kept groomed, they only need to be bathed when they are dirty, which keeps their bathing needs low maintenance. You will want to ask the breeder about the other dog breed in the mix to get a better idea of what coat types you could expect. If the Australian Shepherd Mix has ears that flop over, they will be more prone to ear infections as their ears are more likely to trap moisture, dirt, and debris. You may just need to check floppy ears more often. Dental disease is one of the most common, and most preventable, health issues in dogs. Good dental care for your dog could include one or a mix of brushing their teeth daily, using enzyme toothpaste, dental chews, and more. Because the Australian Shepherd has such a high energy level, you need to be prepared for an Australian Shepherd Mix to require a lot of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Not only do Australian Shepherds need a job to do, but they also need to run and play a lot to expend energy. This could vary in an Australian Shepherd Mix depending on the other breed in the cross, but you will need to be prepared for the possibility of a high-energy working dog. An Australian Shepherd usually stands 18 — 23 inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between 35 and 70 pounds. The size of an Australian Shepherd Mix can be greatly affected by the other parent breed in the cross. Asking the breeder about the other parent breed and meeting the mother dog can give you a good idea of what size to expect in your Australian Shepherd Mix puppy. Australian Shepherds generally live for 12 — 15 years. Although the other parent breed of an Australian Shepherd Mix can affect the average life expectancy slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span from them. We are obsessed with her my kids love her and she has the best personality we tell every one we know about your puppies and how loving and helpful you were with us after penny died. We have never had an Australian shepherd before but as soon as we met our puppy we fell in love with her and the breed. She bonded completely to me very quickly. I have taught her several tricks both verbally and by hand signals. She is extremely smart. She had a very calm and sweet disposition from the day I picked her up. She loves to swim. She rarely needs a shower, If so I just rinse her with water. Dirt doesn't seem to stick on her, she always looks clean and doesn't seem to shed. Her hair is really soft. I live in Arkansas and so by chance was driving through the McVay's area, in the sticks and called to ask if I could stop by and show her off as when I bought her they asked me to text some pictures if I could from time to time, I figured the real thing would be better. I viewed their kennel where they kept their Aussies and also they have a huge field for them to run in. It was a very well kept place and the McVay's are just good people, who love their dogs. They had quite an impressive mix of colors and very beautiful dogs. Now that Bree has bonded to me I take her out around people and dogs to socalize her. Very loving do. We are calling him Ryder. Even though we have had him for only a few days he has been super friendly and very playful towards anyone he meets. She is so good with our girls. She sleeps with my 2 year old every night. Thank you for a wonderful puppy. She is adjusting already and we were impressed by her temperament and good habits. Thank you so much for everything!!! Australian shepherds sometimes called Aussie shepherds are fantastic-looking four-footers who often turn heads wherever they go. Fluffy, friendly, and full of energy, these ready-to-rock Rovers are a pretty popular breed they ranked 15th in the U. The Aussie was born and bred to herd livestock, and this strong work ethic has most certainly stayed intact over time. These are certainly not couch potato pooches! A few other key facts to understand about Australian shepherds include: Size: Aussie shepherds are medium-sized dogs, who generally stand about 18 to 23 inches at the shoulder and weigh about 35 to 75 pounds males are larger than females in most cases. However, their fluffy coats make them look a bit bigger than they are. Coat: These pups have moderately long double coats, that are usually a bit wavy. They come in several colors, including black, blue merle, red, and red merle. Health Problems: Aussie shepherds are generally healthy dogs, but they are susceptible to hip and elbow dysplasia. They also suffer from things like epilepsy and a variety of different eye problems. Intelligence: Despite being pretty goofy, Australian shepherds are very intelligent dogs. They will grow bored easily, so keep training sessions fun! Friendliness: Australian shepherds are probably best described as moderately friendly four-footers. Some of these beauties are simply unbelievable! Augi Australian Shepherd x Pembroke Welsh Corgi A post shared by Unleashed New London unleashednewlondon As both the Australian shepherd and the Welsh corgi are workaholics, the Augi will love being kept busy, making him the ideal farm dog breed. You just need to provide him with plenty of outlets for his inexhaustible energy to prevent him from getting into mischief and developing behavioral problems. These pups are full of life and happy to keep you company for hours on end. Aussie Pitbulls may be somewhat wary of strangers, but they bond closely with their family members. As long as you have plenty of treats, these pups will happily learn just about any trick with their natural intelligence. This, it is thought, can help make these cuties some of the best dogs for people with allergies. The result? A super-sweet, incredibly beautiful pooch with a karat ticker. While these pups can be a bit reserved around new faces, they are happy to show their goofy and loving personalities to anyone in their inner circles. Note that these big buddies can weigh up to pounds and may not be a good fit for homes with small children due to their boundless energy levels. Baussie Australian Shepherd x Boston Terrier A post shared by The Gibsons Dogrunner thegibsonsdogrunner The Baussie is another highly energetic four-footer, though he often remains a good bit smaller than some of the other Aussie mixes you may see. This can make him a really good city dog , for owners who live in urban areas. Otherwise, you may find that these modest-sized mutts may drive you crazy! These small sweeties bond closely to one or two special humans and are sure to shower you with affection on a daily basis. Despite their size, these pups are surprisingly active and need plenty of playtime to feel their best. This Australian Shepherd mix may be reserved around strangers and other dogs, so early socialization is key. Created by combining two of the highest-energy hounds in the world, these little guys and gals are only happy when provided with a ton of opportunities to exercise. These intelligent pups excel in obedience training and will keep you entertained with their endless enthusiasm. Coming from two active pet parents, the German Aussie Shepherd mix is unsurprisingly needs plenty of daily exercise. And in addition to their often-blue eyes, these doggos will usually bear long-and-luxurious coats, which are as great for snuggling as they are for appreciating aesthetically. These hardworking hounds would appreciate a home where they have plenty of room to run around and expend their energy. Both parent breeds have strong herding instincts, so these marvelous mutts might not be a great fit for homes with small children. But boxers are famous for being some of the best dogs for babies in the world. Gentle, patient, and protective, boxers are simply the perfect four-footers for many young two-footers. These wonderful companions have high energy levels and will appreciate plenty of space to play and exercise. These dogs are known for acting as permanent puppies that might not have full awareness of their surroundings— so early training is essential, especially in homes with smaller children. Well, the Shepnees may be exactly what you need! One part Aussie shepherd and one part great Pyrenees, these fur-covered floofs have super long-and-thick coats, which many owners simply love. Notably, the Shepnees is often slightly calmer than some of the other commonly seen Aussie mixes. Though striking, these dogs are super sweet and will provide plenty of pooch kisses to their loved ones. Australian Shepherd Doberman pups can be somewhat headstrong though sensitive and need pet parents that can provide consistent and positive reinforcement training. Chow Shepherd Australian Shepherd x Chow A post shared by Lisa lisabeingherself Another fantastically furry four-footer, the Chow-Shepherd often looks a lot bigger than he actually is, thanks to his long coat. Australian Eskimo dogs inherit smarts from both pet parents, so training should be a breeze with these pups. These bold best buddies would prefer to reign as the sole dog in the house. Unfortunately, these mutts are heavy shedders, but they are so worth a little vacuuming! Cute, care-free, and slightly comedic, these little canines are sure to keep you entertained as he goes about his day. Do note that beagles are one of the breeds with the best sense of smell , so your Sheagle is going to follow his nose .Aussiekitas might not be the cuddliest of canines, but they present plenty of loyalty to their loved ones. These smart and independent pups need an experienced owner who can provide consistent, positive training sessions. Aussiekitas should serve as the sole pooch in the house. Well, you may want to consider a Dachsherd. They may be a bit small, but thanks to their Australian shepherd parent, these mixed-breed pooches are certainly ready to rock! These gentle giants excel with kids and are happy to play and curl up on the couch. Berner Aussies can be a little aloof around strangers and other dogs, so early socialization is essential. Thankfully, these dogs are eager to please, so training should be super simple. This is pretty understandable, given the fact that Dalmatians were actually bred to run alongside horse-drawn carriages for miles and miles at at time! But on the flip side, there are a ton of situations in which these dogs are awesome! For example, they make one of the best dog breeds for agility activities , given their combination of energy, work-ethic, and athleticism. So, if you want a four-footed friend for fun and games, the Dalshep may be a great choice! As a result, this marvelous mix is a well-balanced canine companion that makes an excellent addition to most families. Aussie Pugs will bond with everyone in the family and are happy to play with both kids and adults. Sponsor Meet Sky We first met Sky in the fall of , a beautiful pup of just six months who'd been found running as a stray with her brother. This comment from a volunteer at the time sums up the Sky we remember: "She is just an all around happy girl. She plays hard-to-get for about three seconds then dissolves into cuddles. She just can't help herself! She arrived at our shelter in October and by Thanksgiving was home with her forever family. Or so we thought. Then the couple had their first baby. They reported that Sky had been wonderful with their new daughter, until she started becoming more mobile. During the baby's first month of crawling around, Sky grew increasingly uneasy. No trainer was consulted. The family reports that Sky est. She absolutely believes she is a lapdog despite her 60 lb frame. She loves being outside, will spend hours in the yard fenced yard a MUST! We can attest firsthand to Sky's sweet, snuggly nature :O But this lovable shepherd girl needs more than just affection. It was immediately evident upon her return to our shelter that Sky was not accustomed to being walked. Many walks with many patient volunteers later, her leash manners are much improved. She has also gotten better at passing other dogs calmly. While Sky was fine with the other resident dog in her former home and previously attended doggy daycare, the family reported that she had--under their care--become increasingly choosy about her doggy friends. She may be happiest being the only pet. She has spent time in foster care, so we can provide lots of firsthand information about house manners, etc. Sky needs a dog-savvy family to help her build confidence and feel safe again. For keeps this time. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A six-month-old male Golden Retriever will weigh between 35 to 45 pounds, while their female counterpart will weigh around 30 to 35 pounds at the same age. As for their height, most Golden Retrievers will still need another three to six months to reach their adult height. How much bigger will my Golden Retriever get? There are a few ways you can estimate how much bigger your Golden Retriever will get. If they are less than a year old, they still need more time to reach their full adult size. Many Golden Retrievers can take up to two years to completely fill out, though their weight at one year old is usually close to their full adult weight. A puppy is rarely larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you a general idea of their maximum weight. If their paws still look large or oversized next to their body and legs, they are probably still filling out and have some growing left to do, as this is a classic sign of adolescence in canines. What is the size of a full-grown Golden Retriever? As adults, Golden Retrievers will appear overall symmetrical and have a powerful body hidden beneath beautiful, golden fur. Golden Retrievers are stunning, sunny dogs that easily steal our hearts. Unfortunately, as a purebred dog breed, they are more susceptible to genetic diseases, which can compromise their lifespan and quality of life. However, many genetic disorders can be treated or prevented with regular veterinary care. Remember that prevention is almost always easier and less expensive than treatment. Your veterinarian may recommend a large-breed growth food to your Golden Retriever puppy to support their growth rate which can help prevent or decrease the severity of hip dysplasia in adulthood. According to the Veterinary Centers of America , Golden Retrievers are also more prone to gaining excess weight. Golden Retrievers are also susceptible to various genetic health disorders, such as oral tumors and aortic stenosis. Aortic stenosis is most commonly found in large, purebred dogs, including Golden Retrievers, and occurs when the aortic valves to the heart narrow. Aortic stenosis causes the body to struggle to pump blood through the valve, creating additional stress on the body. If untreated, aortic stenosis can lead to muscle failure and even fatality. However, veterinarians can treat many genetic diseases like aortic stenosis and oral tumors through surgery and medication. Even with proper prevention and wellness care, necessary veterinary visits can be expensive, with many treatments costing thousands of dollars. At this stage, nipping bad behaviors in the bud is more important than imprinting positive ones. Instead, just redirect them to positive behavior and reward them accordingly. By this point, your puppy should have already been given their distemper and parvovirus vaccinations. By this point, they should be fully housetrained or close to it. Your dog will be likely to gnaw and bite on anything they can get their chompers on—including you. Stay calm and redirect their attention to appropriate objects like chew toys. Your Golden should be fully accustomed to their new kibble at this point, and you should feed them three to four times per day. A 3-month-old dog should also get a DHHP booster, which protects them from parvo, distemper, parainfluenza, and adenovirus. You can play with your pup as much as you like, but take care not to put too much stress on their joints. Avoid a bunch of running and jumping, especially on hard surfaces. Your dog can transition from four meals per day down to three at this point, but the meals should probably be larger. This can cause digestive issues until your dog gets accustomed to it, so be prepared to clean up a few messes. Training should continue, although your primary focus will likely be convincing your pup to chew on something besides your shoes. Your dog will need another DHPP booster at this point, as well as a rabies vaccination. Other optional vaccines include Bordetella, Lyme disease, coronavirus, and leptospirosis. This could cause a brief burst of intense biting and chewing, so power through it. Make sure your pup has plenty of chew toys available to them. Stairs in particular should be avoided. Your pup is likely to start asserting itself at this stage and may start to mature sexually if not spayed or neutered. There are no vaccinations required at this point. Everyone knows how much fun it is to raise teenagers, right? This can lead to undesirable behaviors like aggressiveness, increased tendency to roam, and destructiveness. As a result, you may think that your dog is too skinny, but resist the urge to increase their rations. While most breeds have a puppy coat that they eventually grow out of, Goldens do not. Instead, their puppy coat becomes their undercoat, so you may notice your dog becoming increasingly fuzzy. The teenage rebelliousness should be wearing off by this point, and your dog is ready to begin training in earnest. You should still be feeding them twice daily, and they should stay on puppy kibble for at least another 6 months. Goldens reach their full height between 9 and 12 months old. Females tend to get there faster, but males will be taller in the end. You may also need to cut back on the amount that you feed them. It depends on the individual dog, but females generally reach maturity first. Spaying or neutering your dog has its pros and cons. The pros are fairly obvious: less marking, reduced misbehavior, and zero chance of getting an unexpected litter of puppies. Spaying and neutering can also protect against certain cancers. You may want to wait until your dog is at least 12 months old before getting them fixed. This also leaves the window open longer in which they can suffer skeletal damage, though, so be careful about how active you allow them to be. However, stunted growth and growing too quickly can cause serious health problems, so you should check with your vet to make sure your dog is growing on schedule. Stunted growth is usually caused by malnourishment or a medical problem. You should have your pup tested for parasites like hookworm or ringworm, and consider switching them to a higher-quality, calorie-dense food. If left untreated, malnourishment can lead to weak bones, muscles, and immune system. As you might expect, growing too quickly is often caused by feeding your dog too much. American and British Goldens are similar. However, American Goldens tend to be less stocky and muscular, instead having a leaner appearance. They may weigh a bit less as well. They tend to be taller as well, often standing an inch or two higher than their counterparts. Conclusion Golden Retrievers make excellent pets, and we understand how hard it is to resist the temptation to bring a puppy home. If you do, though, you should understand what to expect from your new dog. Steady growth is what you want to see, without too many peaks or valleys. This sets your dog up for a long, healthy lifespan. Every dog develops at their own pace, so as long as you feed your pup an appropriate amount of high-quality puppy kibble and get them vaccinated regularly, you should be fine. See also:. By Tom Massey Mar 02, Adopting a golden retriever is one of the best decisions you can make. These loving dogs are constantly praised for their gentle and calm, yet playful nature, making them perfect dogs for all walks of life and types of families. So when you do finally bring your Golden Retriever puppy home, you want to do everything you can to give them a long and healthy life for years to come. This is a wide range, so keep in mind that the weight of your Retriever will vary depending on genetic factors and sex. For example, female Golden Retrievers will weigh closer to 55 pounds while Golden Retriever males are heavier and will weigh closer to 75 pounds. Females also typically reach their full size by their first birthday, while males may continue growing through their second year. You can usually tell the size males and females will be based on what their parents look like, which is why Snowy Pines encourages meeting the parents or browsing through their photos and biographies online. Then, calculate 1. What to Expect: This age is crucial for mother-puppy bonding since he will depend on his mother for food, cleaning, and socialization. Image Source Weeks months Golden Retriever Male Weight: Between 8 to 12 weeks, your male puppy will average between 10 to 22 pounds. Golden Retriever Female Weight: Although females will grow to be smaller than males, they are typically around the same weight at this age group. The puppies become very playful, curious, and discover their voices little by little. Introductory training like house training is essential. Socialization is also important, which is why Snowy Pines ensures that all puppies stay with their littermates until adoption. For female puppies, 6 months is a little over the halfway point to their full-size, and males are essentially smaller versions of their adult bodies. Remember, at this age, you can multiply by two to determine their adult weight! What to Expect: Socialization is still crucial at this age, and more intense training can also begin. The puppy should also be kept in happy and safe environments, as any exposure to something fearful at this age may impact him long-term. This is entirely normal: Think of your puppy as a teenager who is going through adolescence and waiting for the rest of his body to catch up. They may get territorial and challenge you and other pets for dominance. Most Golden Retrievers will be fully grown by 24 months old, although this varies. Golden Retriever Female Weight: In most cases, females are finished growing before 16 to 24 months. Whatever their nature is like at the to month mark is likely what it will be throughout their adult life. They are loyal, friendly, and calm, making them the perfect companion for small and large families alike. However, Goldens are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases that are common in bigger breeds that are typically caused by overfeeding, stunted or accelerated growth, and genetic issues. One of the most common diseases that goldens experience is Osteochondritis dissecans OCD. OCD is a developmental disease that affects large-breed dogs because of the accelerated growth they experience. It is an inflammatory condition that causes abnormal cartilage development on the end of a bone in the joint. This can lead to joint problems like arthritis and hip dysplasia which commonly appears in the elbow, hip, and knee. Image Source The good news is that, although larger breeds like golden retrievers are prone to joint issues like this, you may be able to help prevent it through proper practice. OCD is a specific disease that is more common in dogs that receive too much energy and calcium in their diets. Other common factors are genetics, rapid growth, and hormonal factors. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and all that extra weight can leave your puppy with skeletal abnormalities that put too much weight on joints. Another way to avoid accidentally stunted or accelerated growth is to ensure your golden retriever puppy is getting fed appropriately and receiving the right amount of calories. Image Source Months Between 2 and 4 months old, your puppy should eat 4 times per day with 2 ounces per meal. This will add up to 7 to 9 ounces per day, depending on how much he willingly eats. Keep him on puppy food through his first year before switching to young adult food. They must receive regular exercise every day. However, this depends on their age. As previously covered, the more your puppy grows, the more susceptible to common diseases like joint problems. Breeders with years of experience, like the team at Snowy Pines, work hard to keep pure bloodlines so that all of the parents and their litters are as healthy as they can be, which helps guarantee a lifetime full of happiness without any issue. Share on. Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. And have fun! Not all goldens will grow to the same size and at the same rate. The size of the parents is always a good indicator of whether your dog will be above or below average in size. However, while natural variation is nothing to worry about, stunted growth or accelerated growth is. If a golden retriever puppy is malnourished or suffering from an unidentified medical condition usually hookworm or ringworm , their natural growth can be compromised. This can lead to serious medical issues in later life, as it can leave them with weak bones, weak muscles, and a weak immune system, as well as a tendency to develop both skin and digestive issues. Growing too quickly, largely as a result of overfeeding, can also pose a major health risk. As well as leading to obesity, carrying too much weight at the development stage can leave your golden retriever with skeletal abnormalities, hip dysplasia, and osteochondrosis , a condition that affects the joints. With these tips, you will help fight off those genetic health disorders as well. Appropriate Diet Start off by speaking to your vet for guidance on foods to use for the different life stages. At the very least, you will need a nutritionally complete and balanced diet made for large breeds. Good food will help your pup gain the right amount of weight, look healthy, and have enough energy. Proper exercise will build their muscle and bone strength, prevent obesity, increase their agility, stop destructive behavior, and help them release pent-up energy. Vaccines will help to prevent infectious diseases such as hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies, and distemper, all of which could affect the growth and overall health of your puppy. This will be a plus for her overall health. It would also be great to have your vet do routine health checks on your puppy. This way, no issue will go unnoticed, and treatment can be administered early for better outcomes. A shiny coat and bright eyes are a plus. Alternatively, if you notice rapid weight gain or loss, unusual bumps and lumps on their skin, digestive issues, changes in behavior, and visual or hearing complications, take your dog to the vet right away. Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers, especially females, grow pretty quickly. Males could take up to 18 months to achieve the same milestone. However, both will still need an additional year to fill out the chest fully. Adult height, on the other hand, will be reached between 9 and 12 months. As always, females will get there a bit faster than males. You can get a rough idea of how big your golden retriever will grow by first studying the parents. Take note of the size that both of the parents and previous litters have had. Rarely will a puppy grow larger than its parents, so the measurements you gather will give you a better idea of how tall and heavy your golden retriever will get. Full-grown, healthy, male golden retrievers have a height of between 22 and 24 inches while the females are 20 to 22 inches tall. In terms of height and body structure, the Canadian golden retriever has no rival. Spaying and neutering specifically affect the development of bones and also ligament and tendon strength. In fact, some studies report higher incidences of cranial cruciate ligament tears and hip dysplasia among golden retrievers that went through this procedure. Therefore, consult your vet when deciding if and when to spay or neuter your dog. The weight of your golden retriever is a good indication of their healthy development. While male and female Goldens will have different weights and show goldens tend to be heavier than working goldens, overall, they should be hitting the weights listed in the growth and weight chart above. If your dog is not hitting these milestones, consult your vet about malnutrition, possibly caused by worms, and excessive golden retriever growth, which is often the result of overfeeding. If you feel like your pooch is missing any of them, again, it is time to consult your vet. In general, good nutrition and a loving home is a recipe for a happy and healthy golden retriever. If you want to know more about your golden retriever, you can do a DNA test, too. You can choose one of the tests below:.

She has such a pleasant personality and loves to cuddle! My dog is the best dog I have ever owned and I have owned some truly amazing dogs. He is the sweetest well mannered dog in the world. We love him so much! Thank you! I am daily astounded by the gift that you gave me. Not only is he the best companion and a wonderful dog, everyone at Crossfield was so gracious and caring as I worked through recovery. She is friendly, playful, smart, outgoing, and of course beautiful. We have already noticed how much getting a puppy from an excellent breeder vs. This is where we got our first Golden doodle. Your commitment to breeding well tempered and beautiful dogs really shows. She has done so well with her potty and crate training and has slept through the night every night in her crate since we brought her home Saturday, which just a few whimpers here and there. She also will just walk into her crate during the day to nap and take time for herself. She immediately adjusted to her new home the second she walked through our doors and myself, my husband and my kids completely adore her. Also, I am happy to report that my son, has had no issues whatsoever with regard to his allergies and he has done nothing but love up on Oakley since Saturday. We know all of this is large in part to the time you took to match up her parents and the care that Jenny gave to all of the puppies while she had them in her home. I can't thank you all enough! Oakley is truly an amazing puppy and the perfect addition to our family! She has molded into our family as if she was always here with us! In the couple of days that we have had her she has filled our lives with so much joy and laughter. She is just that cute and funny! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for giving us such a great puppy and we are thankful for our trainer Val who did so much magic with Daytona Mae and worked with her to perfect her! We are truly grateful for everything and will surely recommend you and Crossfield to our friends and family! Complete strangers stop to take pictures and often ask if she's real. We have referred you to more people than I can remember. We are so grateful you connected us with her. It has really transformed our pup in the best way possible. It depends. When we receive an email question about puppy availability, we direct any contact to fill-out an application to get on our calendar for a call-back time. An available puppy now may be sold in 30 minutes, so we never give updates via email about puppy availability. Our lists fill up quickly! Usually, we have a very limited number of puppies that are available before they are 8 weeks. You can check out our litters by visiting our Litter page. However, if you want to speak with someone about availability, we invite you to fill out an application and schedule a call with one of our Client Representatives. You can also check our website for any planned litters. Each size tab breaks-out to available pairs, and each pairing provides you with the estimated time the litter will be born and the reservation list. We sell puppies everyday and keep a master list in our office. Lastly, our online lists are updated frequently, but the best way to check availability is to fill out an online application and respond to us about scheduling a phone call. What is the process for getting on a reservation list for a puppy? We will contact you about scheduling a call, and go from there. The first half of our lists are full well in advance of 6 months in most cases. If you have a size, color or gender preference, we recommend you begin as early as you can. When are puppies from our litter expected? The first thing to consider: Has the pair had a successful breeding? Each female has a cycle that we have to wait on. We cannot start any sort of official clock until breeding has occurred. Once breeding occurs, we notify everyone on the reservation list within a week with projected dates for puppy arrival, 6 week picks, 8 week going home, and Trained going home. Many times, the season affects these cycles, so we may be breeding several females over a space of a couple of weeks, depending on swings and shifts in the weather. As you can see from the timing above, we can only provide you with a week planning guide. We track everything, so we know when to project, but our projections are usually based on a season or a one-to-three-month window i. Once a girl has a litter, we will project when her next season will be, but we are only basing that on what she has done in the past. We are often asked about planning for vacation during the season your puppies are expected. We wish we could provide you with more certainty, but if we have not had a breeding, we cannot give you anything more than our informed projections. We recommend planning vacations according to the to week guide. Has your girl bred yet? If she has NOT, you have at least 4 months to get a vacation in before you must think about bringing home a puppy. While you are waiting, check out our current litters. If she has, the clock is ticking! Do you have any trained doodles available? Trained reservations are made by clients many, many months in advance. Clients reserve a puppy, and then select to add training on. You may read about training reservations on our website. To reserve a puppy that you may have trained, please begin our process by filling out our application. We raise high-quality Mini Labradoodles as well as a few other breeds. Below are some Mini Labradoodle pups that have been adopted. Hi, my name is Bristol. I am a 3 year old, lb female yellow lab mix. Totally a coincidence but I am as fast as the cars at Bristol Motor Speedway. My favorite thing to do is play fetch and I will play for as long as you are able to throw the ball and ALWAYS bring the ball back to you. I was rescued by Critter Cavalry from an Arkansas shelter and so very thankful to be in Tennessee. I have the best foster home with two foster brothers who are twice my size and I love to wrestle with them. I have more confidence when I have other dogs to show me how to be a dog. I am a little slow to warm up to new people and do not need an extremely active home with a lot of different people coming and going. Once I get to know you after a few days I will never leave your side! I am very well behaved inside the house, I am crate trained, house-trained, quiet, and would make the perfect work from home buddy - I have been keeping my foster mom company by napping next to her desk all day. I would do great in a home with adults only or a family with older children. A canine companion would be great but I'm also willing to take all the attention for myself if I'm the only dog. BUT did I mention the ball. I warm up to women first, but after a few days, men are ok too. I just did not have a very good beginning to my short life. If you are patient and looking for a great companion, then you have found her in me. I am spayed and current on all my shots.

If you want something quicker check out the hot dog stand in front of the Tiny Diner or the Dunkin Donuts just up the road off of .I worked several years as a veterinarian technician assistant in a very active animal hospital. Over the years I learned so much and gained a lot of experience that has helped me excel as a breeder. While I was attending college, I ended up meeting my husband. He also shared my passion in dogs. She was my dream come true and truly encouraged me to be the breeder I am today. I fell in love with a dark female puppy from the litter. Over time and seeing so many families pleased with our puppies we wanted to grow. We felt that a large property was a must for our dogs to exercise and play. We ended up selling our first home and purchasing the house where we reside now. Technically our mailing address is in Greenville however we are in fact in South Westerlo within the hills of Albany county. Both of our families are from the area, so the transition was very supportive and the location is very easy to travel from or to the New York State Thruway or from Interstate I.Soon after our move we have spent so much time with creating the best environment and care for our dogs. Throughout the year we get visited by the state and AKC to verify our dogs are in the best care possible. Everything was thought of during this build. The building consists of two floors. Fans are optional throughout the entire interior. We have additional propane heaters that will work with no electricity. The floors have built in drainage and are covered in grippy flecked epoxy. Our dogs have constant access to water and have comfortable Kuranda beds to lay on. We have designated areas for our older puppies after mom is done nursing them. These areas consist of very nice over-sized play areas. The walls are made out of washable white plastic, and we use g-flooring with fresh wood chips for the bedding. The puppies have plenty of toys and their own Kuranda bed s that they love to lay on or hide below it. Our outside run area consists of a fully covered roof, so our dogs are protected from the elements, with lighting and fans. The play area has over feet of beautiful black chain link fencing. The large play area also offers a doggy playground area where they have plenty of toys to tug and pull on. About our Dogs: We strive to provide the best and healthiest lines of Golden Retrievers. We spend endless hours in search and communication with multiple breeders from all over the United States. Checking pedigrees and clearances prior to committing with a new line. We have made some amazing relationships with some of the best breeders, all of which share the same common goal of breeding healthy AKC Golden Retrievers. We raise and train all of our puppies within our home. We work with commands, potty training, and socialization on many different platforms and various environments. Early on we are verifying their personality and traits are conclusive with a possible prospect for future breeding. As time goes on, we decide if they are a good candidate or not for breeding. If they are a good candidate additional health testing is scheduled per their age. We conduct several medical tests to verify healthy lines prior to breeding. The health tests set us apart from most breeders that claim their dogs are healthy per a veterinarian check or that claim that they conduct DNA genetic health testing but nothing else. One of the first health tests that we conduct and one of the most important tests on all our dogs, is DNA genetic testing. We have used Animal Genetics in the past but have been shifting towards using Embark. This test allows us to verify we have the best pairing of parents prior to breeding and that we are not passing on bad genes that could be avoidable issues in the future. After our dogs turn 1, they proceed to get OFA testing of their eyes and heart. A specialist either looks at their eyes or heart to verify they have no health conditions that could be passed to their offspring. If we are lucky enough that our young golden passes, we will move forward to the next health testing stage. The next health test that we typically conduct once our young golden is 1. While they are sedated to have these x-rays we usually also have Penn Hip testing done. Also, per our vet the Penn Hip is a better test to know the overall health of the hips as they test the elasticity and movement rather then judging based on an image. Last health test we do is done at the age of 2 years old. As the dogs age their bones calcify, a dog with failing elbow or hips younger then 2 could very well change to passing once they turn 2. Under each dog there is a link from K9 data. Unfortunately K9 data will not allow preliminary testing information in the link which is the OFA elbow and hip test results if the dog is under 2 years of age when the test is conducted. However we do list the preliminary test results under each dog. Once we have the official results K9 data will be updated to reflect their latest test results. We are constantly conducting health tests and updating K9 data as well as the webpage. Lots of factors could play into why a dog could fail their OFA elbows or hip tests. It may not necessarily be genetic but instead could be from the environment that they are raised in. Limiting their jumping heights is extremely important. Simply slipping on ice can cause unforeseen affects to their overall development. It is also highly recommended for additional joint supplements as they grow, we prefer the use of NuVet supplements see link on website tab for further information on NuVet products. Lack of vitamin C in their food is another considered attribute to not having passing scores. All of these factors are highly overseen during the raising of our potential breeding dogs. Unfortunately, sometimes our dogs do not pass all of their tests. We sometimes keep them, but we also have found amazing homes for them. We are even more particular in their home placement as we know their personalities and what would be the best fit. They will be spayed prior or be contracted to be spayed soon after being placed in their new homes. We are very focused on ensuring we know our breeding stock through both their individual health and their genealogy testing. Our dogs and puppies get a lot of socializing. Daily they are engaged with our other dogs, our young sons, our friends, and other family members. They all get a ton of love and attention. This ensures they keep up on their house manners and it also makes it incredibly easier when pregnant moms deliver within our home. Our dogs are not kept outdoors like you might see with other breeders. We also have them go into large fenced in play areas where they play in large groups with each other. We do not show our dogs or conduct any competitions with them. When I am not raising my children, I am constantly spending time with my dogs or interacting with potential customers. My husband works many hours in his law enforcement career to dedicate any additional time in competitions, trials, or shows. Once he retires and the children are older, we may pursue that however it is not our current focus. Some of the lighter goldens that we have also known as English Creams do have championship titles in their bloodlines as does our darker red field goldens. Any of our puppies with proper training could and would be amazing for shows or hunting trials as its in their bloodline. About our Puppies: I usually make the determination of puppies after 30 days of a breeding. I have my own ultrasound machine and can get a good determination of how many puppies are present. It does not give me an exact count. Only way to really narrow down the number of puppies is by an x-ray, around the day mark. I do not conduct my own x-rays and that would require a visit to the animal hospital. To reduce stress on mom and the puppies we do not do x-rays. I get a final count upon delivery keeping mom where she is most comfortable. Delivery of puppies take place in my home around the days after being bred, unless an emergency C-section requires otherwise. Typically, all our puppies are delivered naturally. Someone is always with the mother for the entire delivery. It is very strenuous but has the best outcome for both mom and pups. When all the puppies are born, we will post pictures on the Facebook page. We will then reach out to anyone on our waiting list. If by chance, there are any extra puppies we will make an announcement on Facebook after exhausting our wait list. Sometimes people back out and puppies do come up available at various times. During the initial few days into the few weeks mom and puppies are spending a lot of quality time together. We are keeping a close attention that everyone is gaining weight and seem to be progressing. The pups are handled daily by us. After about 2 weeks eyes and ears will begin to open. The fourth week they are starting to find their legs and moving around exploring. The fifth week if all are doing well, I begin the weaning process where mom is nursing less and less as I introduce kibble to their diet. We begin the deworming process and also begin the first vaccine. We do not travel with the puppies to an animal hospital. I feel it could be stressful for the puppies and creates an opportunity for the puppies to be exposed to other pet sicknesses. I have a traveling vet come and conduct full physicals on all of the puppies. You will receive a copy of her report in the puppy folder upon pickup date. We have outside play areas and toys for them to interact with. They will also be played with by children and handled by adults. They will have several toys to interact with. Obstacles will be in there play pens to learn jumping and crawling. Process Purchasing a Puppy: If you decide that you would like to move forward with getting a puppy, we recommend that you first look at the females and the males that we have. Sometimes the males could change if multiple females come into heat at the same time. We also have an additional tab where you can view planned future breeding so you can have a better idea of potential pairings. Next, I would like to have a phone interview so we can find out more about yourself and the home that a puppy of mine would be going to. In our discussion I would like to know which mother you were leaning towards and whether you prefer a male or female puppy. I can go over all additional questions that you may have including total costs. If both parties are fully satisfied, I will move forward with sending you over the contract. I sell all my puppies with limited AKC registration. Under certain circumstances I will offer full AKC registration for an additional charge. If you are wondering what the difference is between limited and full registration. Limited registration means you can never breed a puppy from me and it will be expected upon proper age that the dog is spayed. Full registration is only for breeders that want to purchase a puppy with intentions of breeding. I am not against giving another breeder full registration however it must be discussed prior, and all requirements must be met that I have. I do require the final payment to be in cash upon pickup of the puppy, so there no issues of bounced checks or issues with sending monies from one bank institution to another. No exceptions. I typically only reserve the first 3 females and the first 3 males as there are no guarantees of how many puppies are born. I go in order of when I am contacted. For an example if you contacted me in May for a female, and John Doe contacted me in January for a female from the same mother then John Doe will get first pick and you would get second pick. It seems to be the fairest method I have come across and will be moving forward with that process unless I discover a better way. I also reserve the right to have first pick so I can sustain my future breeding line as it dictates. I do not allow visitation to the puppies until they are ready for pickup. It also increases the chances for the puppies to get sick and potentially all die from a condition call parvo, as they are not full vaccinated. I have scheduled meetings with individuals that would like to meet me and the adult dogs fully vaccinated prior to making a commitment but not when I have current litters. I would recommend if you want to see the puppies earlier to log into Facebook and follow my page on there. I conduct live videos where you can see all the puppies. After a few weeks old we begin to collar them so you can tell them apart better. I do not place or pick certain pups for certain homes. Some people may not like that due to a puppies drive or behavior. I personally feel training is key to your dogs behavior. You have to spend time with this puppy and be consistent. Goldens just want to please you, but they will test you to learn their place in the household. If you lack experience in training dogs, I do recommend you work with a trainer and read literature so you can achieve the most success with your puppy. You will get an hour to choose your puppy. Please be mindful as I will have others scheduled after your hour of time is completed. I will need some of that time to go over paperwork that is required through the state to complete. I have no problems if you want to bring a trainer or conduct your own tests to see if one puppy might be a better fit based on their opinion. Please be respectful of my property and do not go adventuring around wherever you may like without me being present. Once you pick your puppy and all paperwork has been completed, you will be provided with vet records of your puppy and the vaccines that were previously given. At this time, I do not microchip any puppies. I personally feel the best time to microchip a puppy is when they are sedated which I recommend during the spay. We do require that you schedule an appointment with your vet within 14 days of the pickup date. You may want to schedule this prior to arrival as animal hospitals have been extremely busy. We will have gift bag for you. There will be some surprises in there for your pup, including enough puppy food for the next several days so you can either remain on it or gradually change the food to one of your liking. We highly recommend slowly changing the food over time if you decide to change it as they have extremely sensitive stomachs at this age. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. For more about the true price of a golden retriever puppy, you can read our full price breakdown here. Location Information for New York Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. What type of Golden Retrievers are sold in New York? We have some good news! Ready to make your Golden Retriever dreams come true? Take a look at our convenient list of available puppies. How do I know which breeders to trust in New York? Our independent network of trusted breeders have already been pre-screened and verified, so that you can focus on what really matters: choosing your dream puppy. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. You must consider important elements like social and living conditions when choosing a Golden Retriever breeder. The way your Golden Retriever is raised will have a significant impact on their lives. Evaluate the conditions of the breeder and the treatment of every puppy. The type of dog breeder you choose is important, so consider different factors like the acreage, reputation, and pedigree. Considering how your New York dog breeder raised them is very important to their health and learning curve. If they raise your golden retriever in a positive environment, they should have an obedient and loving personality. As you select your puppy, consider the appearance, age, size, and gender. For instance, the gender of the Golden Retriever has a large impact on its personality. Choose a puppy compatible with your personality. Golden Retrievers can be outrageously disobedient without early training and socialization from their breeders. Without training from breeders, your puppy will certainly require professional training later in life to receive the required discipline that a Golden Retriever needs. Training in puppyhood can instill obedience in your dog, preparing them for a bright future of good behavior. want to buy a labrador puppy - Currently, GSDs have eleven dog kennel club-accepted coat colors. Pure white, solid blue, merle and brindle are coat colors that some regard as faults and sadly, are slowly coming to extinction. This article will focus on Brindle-Colored German Shepherds , how the color was achieved, its history, where they can be found and why do we have fewer sightings of this coat color pattern. What is a Brindle Colored German Shepherd? Brindle is a coat color pattern in German Shepherds that looks like stripes on their fur or coat, along their legs. Though the pattern is similar to tiger stripes, it appears to be more subtle and has irregular shapes and streaks of color. The color markings are usually darker or slightly lighter than the base coat. It is commonly seen as a black stripe on a reddish brown or tan base coat. Brindle Colored German Shepherds have four different brindle color patterns depending on their dominant and recessive genes. It has the most solid brindle color amongst the four types of brindle color. After careful observation and analysis, it was found out that two of his sons were brindle colored. It might be strange to some as to how he got two brindle colored sons. In genetics, brindle is one of the three variants of the dominant black gene. Brindle is a separate mutation that allows the agouti gene such as sable, tan points, recessive black and tricolor to come out. However, the result causes brindling or streaks of the agouti color. This explains why brindle colored GSDs have the dominant black gene. They are very active and need a lot of exercises, just like standard GSDs. Healthwise, they can have inherited diseases and other health issues, too. And just like other GSDs, they can be straight backs or sloped-backs. Their intelligence is equal to other colored GSDs. Therefore, with proper training, diet, and care, these Brindle Colored GSDs are set to become great working dogs and loving family pets. Since brindle is considered as a washed-out color, Brindle Colored GSDs are disallowed from being included in the conformation rings. Looking for a Brindle Colored German Shepherd is like looking for a needle in a haystack. One needs to understand the history of the GSDs in order to fully grasp the development of this dog breed and how some colors like brindle, was severely affected. For some unknown reasons, liver, white, brindle and blue merle were chosen to be eradicated. In an attempt to breed a GSD similar looking dog, the Dutch Shepherd was created and standardly having brindle colored only to be distinguished apart from GSDs. Nowadays, Brindle German Shepherd can be found in rescue centers or shelters. Some are also left by breeders who messed up a breeding program and ended up producing a Brindle GSD with health or physical issues. So, interested adoption applicants should be ready to embrace everything and must not expect too much. Looking for an ethical breeder is also a good option for one to have a healthy Brindle Colored German Shepherd puppy. How much does a Brindle Colored German Shepherd cost? The cost for Brindle Colored GSD will always depend on the breeder and the demand for this color pattern. This can go higher if the Brindle Colored German Shepherd puppy has papers proving its pedigree, line, breeding history, and working title. Conclusion Brindle might not be recognized as one of the standard GSD color variations, but this should not hinder breeders from continuing to nurture German Shepherds having this unique color pattern. Is the Brindle German Shepherd dog the lost pattern? The answer will be yes and no. Yes, it will soon become a lost color pattern if GSD breeders and enthusiasts will not do something to promote its beauty and continue breeding them not only for their rare color but also to breed them ethically. Training and proper care is crucial for GSDs whatever coat color they have. Peter My name is Peter and I am a dog lover. I have two German Shepherd dogs, one of which is called Biscuit because his coat is very light with brown patches. My wife and I moved from the UK to Ohio where we now live with our two daughters. We love squash on weekends and following the English Premier League closely! Previous Article. Lifespan Sociability As the name implies, German Shepherds are herding dogs. German Shepherds are eager learners but can be a little stubborn, which some owners may find challenging. Socialization is essential for these pups because they have a powerful jaw and a heritage guarding livestock and people. Improperly socialized German Shepherds may be suspicious of people and animals alike. Brindle Coating Has Distinct Genetic Markers In genetics, color patterns can be a bit more finicky to determine than simply colors. The brindle pattern is marked in genetics by a specific mutation of the dominant black coloring gene. This variation of the dominant gene allows for the recessive coloring gene to show through on the fur and results in the brindle patterning. A post shared by Totem totem. Of these, at least two were observed to have the brindle genetic mutation! This means that brindle coloring was documented early on in the German Shepherd family tree. The S. The reasoning is not stated but seems to be cosmetic rather than for health reasons. According to the S. V, white, liver, brindle, and blue merle colorings were all chosen for eradication. There Are Four Types of Brindle Coating The brindle pattern is distinct, with irregular streaks of darker or lighter color through the base color. The four patterns of brindle coating are black brindle, brindle-tan, brindle-sable, and brindle- gray. Black brindle, or reverse brindle, appears to have light stripes on a dark coa. Brindle-tan dogs have a lighter coat with darker streaks. Brindle-sable dogs have a darker coat color on the head and back only. Brindle-gray dogs may only have Brindle points on the feet and face. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are considered serious faults. A post shared by Our Sweet Fur Babies tajiasangelsgsdlegacydobermans 6. The pattern was explicitly chosen to distinguish the breed from the German Shepherd Dog. Conclusion The German Shepherd is one of the most distinct and beloved dog breeds. There seems to be no reason that the brindle patterning could not receive similar recognition. This brindle term is also known as tiger stripes. There are times where two dogs with a brindle coat can look different. The markings or stripes are usually darker than the undercoat of the coat. You may see a black streak on a tan or reddish base coat. The Brindle German Shepherd will always be a great curiosity among traditional German Shepherd breeders. Four types of the brindle color As mentioned above, four types of brindle color depend on the recessive and dominant genes. This disparity in brindle colors arises from a change in the base coat color gene. Gray brindle German Shepherd The brindle German Shepherd with a gray or silver base color can appear with very subtle or even absent pattern markings. Brindle-Sable German Shepherd The sable brindle German Shepherd has a brown or sable base color that looks like a more solid brindle. They may have darker fur on the back and head. It can have a coat that can range from black, tan to blue, from isabella to liver with brindle markings. Black Brindle German Shepherd This black brindle German Shepherd typically have recessive genes that can appear solid black, blue, liver, or Isabel. A black brindle German Shepherd appears to have light stripes on a dark coat base. You may notice that 2 of the base colors arise from generic alterations of the eumelanin black gene. Simultaneously, 2 of the base colors come from genetic modifications from the red pheomelanin gene. According to certain German Shepherd breeders, the first name certified as a German Shepherd was Horand Von Grafrath, previously known as Hektor Linkshrein, and he had 33 children. After extensive analysis and observations, they discovered that 2 of his sons had a brindle color. Producing a brindle coat pattern requires complex genetic processes. It is more difficult to breed a dog with this brindle color and more difficult for people who consider brindle to be not a standard color than breed a dog with a basic or standard color such as red or black. There are two types of central color genes that all canines inherit: pheomelanin and eumelanin. Pheomelanin controls primary red and red tones that can range from pale ivory, liver, brown to a burnished reddish. Pheomelanin is only responsible for controlling the color of the coat. Eumelanin is in charge of controlling basic black and any color in that spectrum. It can be seen as pale blue, silver, and even absolute black. Eumelanin is also responsible for controlling the eyes, nose, and skin color. Brindle-colored German Shepherd puppies are no different than other German Shepherds. They require many exercises and are very energetic dogs. They can inherit certain diseases or health problems as in the other standard GSDs in health. They can have the sword inclined or straight, and they are very intelligent dogs like the German Shepherds of other accepted or standard colors. If you train them properly, care for them, and feed them the correct diet, you can have GSD brindle dogs that are ideal for work, intelligent, and very affectionate for the whole family. Unfortunately, some clubs are not very fond of this type of brindle color because they consider it a failure. They regard brindle coat color as a faded color. In this way, you can understand the development of this breed and why colors like the brindle are seriously affected. They did this because they were normalizing the GSD breed. Looking for a GSD brindle can be difficult because colors like white, liver, blue blackbird, and brindle are the chosen eradication. To create a dog that bore a similar resemblance to the German Shepherd, the Dutch Shepherd was bred and came standard with a brindle color. These are now available to German Shepherds at shelters or rescue centers. Many breeders also leave them because they ruined a breeding presentation and produced an SD Brindle with health problems or physical health problems. People who want to adopt Brindle German Shepherds should accept everything regarding this coat color. You should look for a breeder who is ethical so that you can find healthy tabby German Shepherds. It can be time-consuming and generally expensive work, but it will be in your best interest to have a coat color that is thought to be extinct. A brindle German shepherd is expensive, but it will depend on the breeder and the demand for this color. You may also like:. Apart from those, specific colors are either unregistered or are considered a coat pattern. One such coat pattern is brindle, a coat pattern best described as striped or marbled. This pattern is similar to the stripes on a tiger but is more subtle with irregular streaks of color and shapes. Brindle German Shepherds are so rare that there is no singular standard to their actual physical appearance. However, the most commonly seen coat has blacker markings on a reddish-brown or tan base coat. Their dominant and recessive gene pool decides four different brindle color patterns. They are among the rarest types of German Shepherds and belong to the dominant black gene series. Some people even claim that they are now entirely extinct, which is not the case. It is unclear where the first brindle German Shepherd originated. Horand sired many pups, and very few pictures black and white exist of them. Most experts who have analyzed those photographs believe that at least two of the pups had the brindle color pattern. This makes the brindle coat color pattern one of the originating patterns of the German Shepherd breed. But how did Horand Von Grafrath, formerly known as Hektor Linksrhein, birth two brindle-colored pups? From a genetics perspective, brindle is one of the three variants of the dominant black gene. It is also a separate mutation that allows the agouti gene to appear, such as sable , tan points, recessive black, and tricolor. The result causes the agouti color to form streaks or brindling, which explains the presence of a dominant black gene in brindle-colored dogs. We can trace this color pattern back to Europe when specific colors and color patterns like blue , liver, white , and merle German Shepherds were imported to America. These colors were; blue, liver, white, and the patterns — brindle and blue merle. A brindle GSD is not very different from its counterparts except for its color. Just like other types of German Shepherds , they require lots of physical and mental stimulation. They can be straight-back or sloped back, depending upon their breeding. Male brindle German Shepherds are usually 24 to 26 inches tall and weigh about 66 to 88 pounds. Females weigh approximately 48 to 70 pounds and are 22 to 24 inches in height. Their typical life span is like that of other German Shepherd varieties — between 10 to 13 years. They are also highly intelligent like other varieties, and you can quickly train them. Brindle German Shepherds also suffer from specific inheritable health concerns just like all the other types. Brindle German Shepherds possess a specific coat pattern of alternating strips of color different from the base color. The exact pattern on each dog depends upon his genetics and is thus variable. Two brindle German Shepherds can even have completely different coat patterns. Below are the brindle German Shepherd color patterns: Black Brindle Brindle Sable Brindle Gray A black brindle German Shepherd is also known as a reverse brindle and possesses recessive genes of solid black, liver, light buff, or blue. They have lighter colored stripes on a darker base coat. Brindle-tan German Shepherd Dogs have brindle-colored markings on usually black, blue, isabella, or liver-colored coats. Brindle-sable German Shepherds possess the richest brindle color amongst the four types and typically have a darker coat color only on their head and back. Brindle-gray German Shepherds, in contrast, have brindle markings that appear either only as brindle points or do not appear at all. Despite these genetic variations, their coat color is a hot topic for debate and controversies. Some will say that brindle is a non-standard color for German Shepherds and partly due to the close association between brindle coloration and Pit Bulls. Others believe that the brindle gene is genetically unstable. Thus this color pattern is always going to be rare amongst mainstream breeders. They were inserted into the standard because lighter dogs were easier targets in times of war. Finding brindle German Shepherds is quite a task. German Shepherd history books show that many originating breed colors were eliminated by the German Shepherd Dog Club also known as SV in the standardization process of this breed. Liver, white, brindle, and blue merle colors were chosen to be eradicated because as dogs of war, darker colors and patterns were less of a target. The German Shepherd Dog Club considered the brindle color pattern to be unsuitable in wartime Europe, and thus breeders made no efforts in the following years to increase the numbers. Today, brindle GSDs can be abandoned in rescue shelters or centers by owners interested in mainstream German Shepherd colors. A few are also left by unethical breeders who misbreed and end up with brindle shepherds with health or temperamental issues. Intentional breeding is very rare as they have been sidelined over the years. Many see this color pattern as a genetic mutation that makes it even harder for breeders to produce brindle dogs. The brindle gene is one of the three variants of the dominant black gene the other two are dominant black and non-solid black. Specifics of this gene are mostly a mystery, but it is speculated to result from a spontaneous mutation. Looking for a brindle German Shepherd is not an easy task, and interested individuals are most likely to return empty-handed. A better option is finding an ethical breeder that breeds healthy brindle-colored German Shepherd puppies. But since they are scarce to find, their price can be much higher than anticipated. Similarly, a brindle puppy with papers proving its pedigree, line, breeding history, and running title will have a much higher price. It is evident that prices mainly depend upon breeders. Because of their high demand and low availability, some unscrupulous breeders often breed and raise brindle pups inadequately to make money quickly. This takes a toll on their health and makes them prone to illnesses. The official coat colors listed in the German Shepherd official AKC breeding standard are black , black and tan, black and cream, black and red, black and silver , blue, white, liver, grey, and sable. However, the German Shepherd Dog Club of America who has control over the written standard within the AKC , does not want to list colors and patterns separately. Exotic patterns such as brindle are frowned upon by many breeders and some dog clubs, which reduces their popularity. However, a few ethical breeders focus their breeding programs on the development of such rare coat-color patterned dogs. You can find such breeders, but you may have to pay whatever price they charge. If you are looking to take a brindle German Shepherd in as a pet, adopting is a good option as adoption fees are much lower. Brindle German Shepherds are good family dogs. They get along with children and other pets and are incredibly intelligent and thus highly trainable. They also make good guard dogs as they innately have protective instincts. Their temperament traits are the same as all other GSD types. These dogs are highly versatile and have an uncanny ability to learn new tricks. Their easy-going temperament makes them easier to train than other breeds. They are eager to learn and, if socialized and trained correctly, make great companions. They are somewhat aloof to strangers, and some may even be fearful of new people or other dogs or animals. You can prevent this by socializing them early to become familiar with new people and smells and sounds. A lack of socialization can make them aggressive and view other animals and people as threats, leading to destructive behavior. In contrast, they grow up to be calm and well-balanced and behaved dogs when trained well. Since they require appropriate mental and physical stimulation, you can quickly devise exercises or training routines that you both can follow, such as jogging, running at the beach, hiking in the woods, fetching a ball, or playing certain sports. Exercising along with your dog develops a friendly bond of trust with him. Brindle GSDs are very loyal dogs, and once this bond is established, it can never be severed. Apart from being good family pets , German Shepherds are also great for agility training, lure coursing, flyball, tracking competitions, Schutzhund training, and search-and-rescue work. The brindle German Shepherd is also known as a mouthy breed because they use their mouths due to their herding heritage. Therefore, it is normal for them to chew on anything that fits in their mouth. But you do not have to allow it as you can train them to channel their instincts appropriately and safely. They are also very social and would be the happiest when with family. These loving and affectionate creatures will put their own lives at risk to protect their loved ones. Some people believe that their coat color correlates with bad temperament, thereby making them unfit for families. The Center for Animal Genetics says that their color is a genetic factor determined by color pattern genes and does not impact their obedience, intelligence, or even working ability. They possess traits and a temperament comparable to other standard colored German Shepherds. Pros of Brindle German Shepherds Unique Appearance: Brindle German Shepherds have a unique and majestic appearance that makes them stand out from other types. They have a wolf-like appearance and are relatively sturdy and well-built with a proportioned body, making them visually appealing. They also possess a double coat, a bushy tail, and erect ears, making them look intimidating yet cuddly. Versatile Dogs: Brindle German Shepherds are versatile dogs with incredible intelligence, loyalty, and bravery and are among the top obedience competitors. They can be trained through consistent reinforcement-based training and mentally and physically stimulating exercises to excel at various activities. They possess an incredible cognitive, physical, and emotional capacity and are great at police work, therapy, scent detection, agility, and service work. The German Shepherd breed ranks third in intelligence globally. Very Protective: Brindle German Shepherds have an alert nature and are incredibly loyal to their guardians, and make great protective dogs. The behavior of dogs usually depends on the education and environment they are subjected to. Consequently, you can train them to be friendly and fierce. Highly Active and Energetic: These dogs thrive on regular exercise and possess medium to high energy drive. Not giving them enough mental and physical stimulation can adversely affect their health and behavior. If you are not an active person, they are not the right fit for you. But if you lead an active lifestyle, they can be your best companion and even motivate you to exercise or burn those extra calories. If you develop a strong bond with them, they can quickly become your best friend and would love you no matter what. They may look intimidating on the outside but are deeply caring dogs on the inside and would always put you first. Cons of Brindle German Shepherds Have Heritable Health Concerns: The Orthopaedic Foundation for Animals reports that all German Shepherds are prone to several heritable health concerns, such as hip and elbow dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, and von Willebrand disease, to name but a few. Since they are not bred according to specific breeding standards, it is widespread for these dogs to develop such conditions. It is essential to make sure that your dog has health-tested parents before adopting. Their rarity adds to their price as well. Finding healthy brindle dogs in shelters and rescue centers can be even more challenging than looking for serious breeders. There is nothing in the breed standard that disqualifies their exotic coat color pattern from being show dogs. The confusion lies in that no brindles have yet entered the show ring as it is presumed by many owners that they will be marked down by the judges. Can Become Greedy: Although they have well-balanced behavior, they can still overeat and even become somewhat gluttonous. Their eating habits need to be monitored carefully to manage their weight. You may also need to eradicate bad eating habits to prevent them from becoming fussy eaters. You should also portion their daily food intake into two or three meals to prevent bloat GDV. However, they should not be adopted simply for their aesthetic appeal or their rarity. You should only get a pup if you treat it like a family member and companion and raise it according to their needs. Related Posts You May Like:. Breed Info The tan and black-saddle coat is what the German Shepherd is most recognized for. But not many realize that they come in many other coat colors—some more common than others. There are uncommon colors like silver and blue. Even more rare are others, including the brindle German Shepherd. A brindle German Shepherd has a coat that is best described as tiger-striped or marbled. Theoretically, the base color could be tan, black, or sable. Even more rarely, it could be silver, blue, or liver. For all dogs, coat coloring is determined by two pigments called eumelanin and phaeomelanin. By default, eumelanin appears as black but can be modified by certain genes to become blue or liver. On the other hand, phaeomelanin controls the color red. However, the brindling or striped patten will only appear if the dog carries the K locus. This is related to the A locus, which is responsible for the sable GSD coat. The only way to breed the brindle coloring in purebred GSDs is to have at least one brindle parent. Even so, a brindle puppy is not guaranteed. This is because the brindle allele Kbr is recessive to the dominant black allele Kb. So, not only should one of the parents be brindle but also the other parent should at least carry the recessive Kbr allele. Brindle German Shepherds are now incredibly rare. GSD enthusiasts believe that the brindle coat was common among the working dogs that the breed founder, Max von Stephanitz, developed. Some believe that it was purposely bred out of the GSD gene pool as a means to distinguish it from similar dogs like the Dutch Shepherd , which is most commonly brindle. This makes it even rarer than colors produced by genetic abnormalities. In fact, enthusiasts of the breed say they are already extinct. According to the Aringsburg Kennel , no brindle GSD has been registered with a kennel club since .Their brindle coloring should not affect any other physical attributes and would definitely have no effect on their health or temperament. Knowing this, a brindle German Shepherd would definitely be a rare-looking companion. However, the requirements for its care and rearing would be the same. They would need high-quality food, regular grooming, early socialization , plenty of exercise , and tons of opportunities for mental stimulation. Are Brindle German Shepherds Purebred? Brindle German Shepherds that were produced by two purebred parents are technically purebred. Despite not being recognized by the AKC, a brindle GSD that can be proven to be purebred would definitely cost much more than a typical puppy of the same breed. Its rareness will definitely contribute to its value. However, enthusiasts of the breed believe in reviving this variation if only to ensure that the breed stays true to its history. Another unusual GSD variation is the blonde German Shepherd , which breeders do not yet know for sure how to reproduce. Finding a puppy The German Shepherd is an intelligent, athletic, and brave dog breed. These dogs are common as loyal, affectionate family pets, and as working dogs, particularly alongside the police and military. Many German Shepherds have black and tan coloring. But, is it possible to find a purebred brindle GSD? What is a Brindle German Shepherd? The German Shepherd breed harks back to the late s. They were bred by a man named Captain Max von Stephanitz, who aimed to create the ideal all-round herder. Over time, the breed developed, evolving from the original herding role to other working roles, such as a guard dog, and a military dog. Brindle refers to a color type, a pattern made up of alternating stripes of light and dark coloring. In fact, some of the earliest GSD ancestors had stripes! Can a German Shepherd be Brindle? According to the AKC breed standard, brindle is not an accepted color or pattern for the German Shepherd breed. In fact, one of the earliest German Shepherd ancestors, a dog named Horand von Grafrath, born in , had some brindling on his coat. But, many breeders will stay away from GSDs with this coloring, instead aiming to breed puppies that align with the official breed standards. What Causes Brindle Coloring? All dog coat colors come from two pigments: black eumelanin and red pheomelanin. The genes that cause brindle coloring are found at the K locus. But, the gene kbr is recessive to the genes that cause black coloring K. So, a dog must receive two copies of the gene to have stripes in their coat. So, some German Shepherds may have very small amounts of brindling, and others may have more extensive markings. Is a Brindle German Shepherd Rare? Brindle German Shepherds are not very common. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, as we already know, the genes that cause coloring are recessive. If a dog inherits only one copy of the gene, they will have black fur. They will only express as brindle if they receive a copy of the gene from each parent. Secondly, brindle is not an officially accepted German Shepherd color. So, many breeders will seek to avoid it in their breeding lines. Instead, they will usually stick to officially accepted colors, such as black and tan, grey, and even white. Are Brindle German Shepherds Friendly? When trained and socialized well from a young age, a German Shepherd can be a friendly, affectionate dog. However, they are also likely to be energetic, loyal, and highly intelligent. This can mean that they are easily bored, and need to make their own fun if not properly stimulated and exercised. On top of this, if not socialized well a GSD can show aggression and territorial behavior. This includes people wearing different clothing, people of different ages, in vehicles, in new environments, and so on. Good socialization before 12 weeks is a great way to reduce any aggression in the future. Are Brindle German Shepherds Purebred? DNA tests are a great way to find out if your German Shepherd is purebred. There are also resources like pedigree databases that you can look at. Purebred brindle German Shepherds are uncommon because this is not an official shade and is caused by recessive genes. Instead, it can be easier to find a mixed breed with this fur, such as a German Shepherd Pitbull mix. There are also similar purebred breeds whose breed standards include this pattern of coloring, such as the Dutch Shepherd. Are Brindle German Shepherds Healthy? The genes that cause brindle coloring are not yet linked to any health issues. These include: Musculoskeletal problems. Rare GSD coat colors include white, black, blue, and brindle. The pattern is somewhat equivalent of tiger stripes, although it is less obvious and has asymmetrical forms and splodges of color rather than symmetrical ones. In most cases, the color marks are either darker or a little bit lighter than the base coat. Irresponsible breeding of brindle GSDs can lead to low-quality puppies. So, before buying, ensure that the puppy is healthy and the breeder is of good reputation. But this option is not of good use because of the rarity of this breed. Still, you can try to find them by checking at the local shelters and rescue centers. If you are lucky, you can discover precisely what you are looking for. However, you should ensure that you are adequately prepared for any medical or physical concerns that may develop later on in the life of your dog due to overcrossing. The main reason behind GSD brindle patterns is the mutations in normal gene interactions. Usually, alterations or mutations in genes Kbr gene are responsible for brindle coat coloration in German Shepherd Dogs. Because Kbr is a recessive gene, it is only possible for puppies to have brindles in their coat if they inherit two copies of the gene. If a GSD gets the dominant black gene, which functions at the same locus as the brindle gene, the dog will not develop a brindle coat. Breeders have a more challenging time producing brindle German Shepherds since a genetic mutation causes this color pattern. As a result, finding brindle German Shepherds for sale might be challenging. The characteristics of brindle-colored German Shepherd puppies are almost identical to those of other GSDs. They are similar to normal German Shepherd Dogs in that they are pretty energetic and require a great deal of physical activity. They only differ in coat color and pattern. In terms of their health, they are susceptible to hereditary illnesses and other health problems. In addition, much like other types of GSDs, their backs can either be level or sloped. They are just as smart as any other colored German Shepherd Dog. Therefore, with the right kind of training, food, and care, these brindle-colored German Shepherd Dogs have the potential to become wonderful working dogs as well as affectionate companions for families. Sadly, some kennel groups do not strongly prefer washed-out colored German Shepherd Dogs and even consider it a flaw in the breed. There is a prohibition on brindle-colored German Shepherd Dogs competing in conformation events because of the perception that brindle is a color that has been washed out. Conclusion The fact that brindle is not considered to be one of the conventional color variants for GSDs should not discourage breeders from continuing to develop German Shepherds with this distinctive color pattern. Brindle GSDs are amazing dogs. Dog Pricing Welcome to Dog Pricing, your comprehensive source for all things canine!
