As my website states, I am not like other breeders in many ways. First, I want to explain how the average Labrador breeder raises their pups the first few weeks of their life. They expect these tiny pups without their senses fully developed to find their way to a nipple without being smothered. I understand that this is what dogs do in the wild, but this is also why many puppies die in the wild. .Then, on top of that they hope that each of the pups will get enough milk on it's own to make it through the 1st week of life. They expect the Lab mom to do all the work, so they don't have to lose a wink of sleep. This is all very sad to say but it's true. I, on the other hand, care about each individual pup's life, I care that each and every one of them survive so that they can live a full and happy life. So, I make sure that each individual pup is given outstanding care. How do I do this? I began with hand raising each one of my pups the first 3 weeks of its life. What do I mean by hand raise my pup? It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. I am up now about to give my pups their 3 am feeding. Hope this helps you all understand what is put into each litter. If you had first deposit in for a male pup you will have first choice of all the males available. If you have second deposit in, you will have the next appointment to choose from the males that are left and so forth. This order of reserving pups would also apply to the females as well. We honor all reservations on a puppy by not selling the puppy to anyone else. So if you are interested in a litter and don't want to make a reservation until "you see the litter". An appointment can be made to view the left-over puppies when they are 10 weeks old, and no sooner. No appointments will be allowed at a younger age, except for the families that made a prior reservation. We will not allow our baby puppies to be exposed to potential life threatening viruses from people that are just "shopping". We wait until all puppies that have been reserved are safely home, before we show any left-over puppies. Any left-over pups will be at least 10 weeks of age before any viewings are allowed, to insure they have at least had 2 sets of shots in. Thankfully this is not a common occurrence but I like to have some home remedies on hand should any of them occur so a vet visit is not required every single time. Fasting Fasting is always the first point of call for an upset tummy that results in either diarrhoea or vomiting. It is not recommended to give your pug small amounts of food after vomiting to see how they go, even if you feel they may be hungry. Fasting is important as it allows for the digestive tract and stomach to have a break and heal. From the time they first vomit or have diarrhoea, you should fast them for around hours before considering introducing liquid or small amounts of food. Fasting means no water or food to ensure their digestive system has a good break. Note: Watch for dehydration during the fasting period and provide small sips of water when needed. Do not fast puppies as they require much more regular sources of nutrition as they are growing. Bone Broth Bone broth is a good way to introduce some nutrients back into your pug after fasting. It is gentle on the stomach, flavoursome for your pug and will provide some great nutrition to your pug as their digestive system recovers from being unwell. Start with a small bowl of warm bone broth and monitor how they handle the bone broth. If they have been vomiting and can keep the bone broth down after fasting then you can start introducing small amounts of food. Turkey is another protein that is gentle on the stomach and much less likely to be an allergy problem. Pumpkin instead of rice is great as it is full of fibre and beta-carotene which converts to vitamin A. Whether it is part of a bland diet or added for extra fibre, pumpkin is great for your pug to help settle their stomach, ease diarrhoea and constipation. Pumpkin should always be cooked before feeding. Canned pumpkin is good to as long as it is plain and not sweetened or pie pumpkin. Slippery Elm Bark Slippery elm is an extraordinary herb that soothes the digestive and respiratory systems. It also has lubricating effects and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it perfect for helping with constipation, diarrhoea and even coughing. Slippery elm is available from health food stores and comes in powder, capsules or syrup form. For easy administering, powder is an easy option. Just mix into some water, food or even yoghurt. Mix into some water, food or even yoghurt. Adding a probiotic to their meals will help to restore the good bacteria and get them back to good health. You can add a probiotic supplement, fermented veggies, raw goats milk and our favourite, kefir. You can include natural prebiotics such as garlic, banana, apple, asparagus and dandelion. A combination of probiotics can be given for variety. Dosage varies between each probiotic. Supplements: follow instructions on the bottle. If you ever suspect there is something more going on besides a tummy bug or there are other symptoms besides just diarrhoea, constipation or vomiting, it is definitely a trip to the vet for a check up. Shih-poos come in a wide variety of colors, such as all black, all white, cream, sable, and any mix and combination thereof. Shih-Poos are playful and energetic dogs. They love to chase after balls, play with squeaky toys, or drag stuffed animals around the house with them. Generally, the Shih-Poo makes a great playmate for older, respectful children but won't tolerate harsh handling or hair pulling. Because the Shih-Poo is a crossbreed, some are accepting and affectionate toward strangers while others are reserved or shy around them. They love to cuddle with their owners and expect to sleep in bed with them at night. Although energetic, the Shih-Poo doesn't require a lot of vigorous exercise. Short but brisk walks in the morning and evening are all that is necessary to keep this spunky little guy fit. He will happily run around the home playing with a ball or other toys. Romping and playing in a grassy backyard with children or racing around a dog park with his canine pals is also appreciated by the Shih-Poo. The Shihpoo coat is always delightfully soft and can be either straight or a bit curly though never quite as curly as a Toy Poodle. Shihpoos can be any color, including black, black and white, gold and white, gold and black, brindle. Temperament Mari May Shihpoo dogs are very intelligent, warm natured, extremely loving, affectionate and easy to train. Their parents are non-terrier types which gives the Shihpoo a gentle, self-content, non nervous personality. They love people especially children! Mari May Shihpoos make excellent lap dogs. Delightful, very amusing and extremely clever, our Shihpoos are energetic, affectionate, playful and alert. Shihpoos make great companions and family pets. A Shihpoo dog is usually a cross between a Shihtzu and a Toy Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a Shihpoo is to look up both breeds and know that you can have a mix of any of the characteristics or traits. Height and Weight This widely depends on the size of the parents, and even grandparents. Mari-May Shih-poos are the result of the careful selection of both parents after a complete evaluation of health and temperament. Our Shih-poo parents are always small usually between 6 and 8 pounds. Our pups can range anywhere between 6 and 13 pounds and we do occasionally have very tiny tea-cup and Imperial sizes, under 6 pounds. Health Concerns Unknown as no research as been preformed on this mix, however mix breeds tend to be healthier than pure breeds, as the breeding lines are wider spread and there is limited opportunity for inbreeding. At Mari-May Kennels, there are no inbreeding practices. Our extensive experience indicates that Shih-poos in our breeding lines are vigorous in health and long lived. Exercise Shih-poos enjoy a daily walk, and love play sessions off the leash. Life Expectancy About 15 years or more. A natural, whole foods diet greatly extends the life of a Shih-poo. Grooming Shih-poos should be brushed weekly and clipped every 6 to 12 weeks. Keep theiur nails trimmed. Trim hair around bottom and eyes as needed. Shih-poos do not shed and they make a good choice for allergy sufferers.
