They worked around the clock to keep him alive, and at 8 weeks and only 2 lbs, they asked us to be his guardians. Lokai may have disabilities, but he doesn't know about them. He now weighs 19 lbs and is very healthy. He has had several surgeries and will be having more as he grows. We own three Bostons, and this dog is by far the healthiest and best bred dog. His nose isn't so smashed against his head, so he can tolerate heat and cold outside better than our other dogs. He is slim and agile, even at 19 lbs, and his tail is two inches long, as opposed to a screw tail. The vet said his body style is closer to the original breeds body style. This breeder works hard to improve the breed. They keep their dogs in the house with them, not outside alone in kennels. Their cleaning requirements for the puppies are phenomenal. I will not buy a dog from anyone else, Rachelle and Chey are like family. They are so good with their dogs and they also give great advice and are trying to help everyone. They truly have a big heart. One thing I love so much is that they are not into for money the dogs they breed are their family pets so everyone can enjoy them. I have 4 now and when I get a bigger house, I plan on getting more. They are truly beautiful people and I am so happy to be part of their WVB family. A purebred dog is one that has been bred over many generations to breed true. Meaning each puppy that is born looks and has the same temperament and characteristics as one another. In most cases a standard is written and breeders must follow this written standard. Only dogs which make the written standard are to be bred. Purebred dogs are beneficial in that, when you buy a purebred dog you know what you are getting. You know how big your puppy will grow and you know basically what type of temperament and care the dog will need. You know the dogs limits, whether it is capable of agility, hunting, search and rescue, police work, herding, flock guardian, or just simply a companion dog. You have a pretty good idea if the dog will be good with your kids, you know if they will have a tendency to wander or if they will stick close to home. You have a pretty good idea if they will like strangers, or if they will fear them. When one breeds purebred dogs great care must be taken to insure the lines to not become too thin. Even with all the best DNA testing available, genetic problems can occur. To give you a simple analogy, let's say there was a law passed that stated only people with red hair and green eyes with a high IQ could have children, with the end goal, everyone in the USA to be smart with red hair and green eyes. If this were to happen, as you can imagine, our gene pool would eventually become thin, and many genetic problems would occur. What's the difference between a designer dog and a mutt? Generally, a mutt is of uncertain ancestry. A designer dog has documented purebred ancestry, and one knows for sure what it is. So what's up with these hybrid, "designer" dogs? Are they healthier? Hybrid dogs can still have genetic problems because you are still crossing two first generation dogs, however the percentage of hybrid dogs with genetic problems is much lower than purebred dogs because the gene pool is mixed. Breeders who breed purebred to purebred creating a first generation hybrid believe in the heterosis effect and hybrid vigor. Vigor means, "Physical or mental strength, energy, or force. When you breed two different types of purebred dogs together you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. If you are stuck on a hybrid dog how do you know which one to choose? Read the temperament and care for both breeds in the cross and be prepared for any combination of the two. If my family was home a lot, I believe I would love getting to be the only dog. I don't think I would be a match for a family that has younger kids as I do startle easily. Fast movements do startle me, and I do get nervous when I don't understand what you want me to do. Given that I am a large and independent male, I don't like being led by my collar either. Using a leash or treats are much more appealing to me if you want me to go somewhere with you. I will need a calm and gentle family that understands that I am an independent boy and don't want to be "coddled". Now with that said, I LOVE attention and being with my people but I am not a dog you can just run up to and smother in kisses and hugs as quick movements spook me. I like gentle pets and loving. He likes to come up on the couch and cuddle sometimes, but he is not a super affectionate dog. He respects your space and isn't pushy about attention but melts into you when you do pet him. Happie flinches at fast movements and sometimes becomes easily nervous so he will need a calm and patient family. A home that has a lot of activity going on or is really noisy wouldn't be a good fit for him. He would do best with a more laid-back family with older kids that know to go slow and be gentle with him. He doesn't like being grabbed and led by the collar either, so his new family should use a leash if they want him to go somewhere with them. As mentioned above he does become nervous and unsure what to do when he doesn't know what you are asking of him. Happie is the one for you! Happie would do best in a quieter more laid-back home.
