It is still hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that my baby is three. It seems like just yesterday that John Davis was born , yet I blinked and some how I have a three year old. Celebrate big and sweet while they still let us. Well, fast forward to this year and add in the busyness of having a toddler and a baby and I found myself a month out from his birthday with absolutely no plans of what I was going to do. While browsing around in search of ideas I came across these adorable invitations from Dixie Design and fell in love! It was right up my alley with all of the blue and white, puppies, and of course, gingham! I spread out all of the food on our kitchen island on a classic white linen tablecloth. Our kitchen opens up to our family room and breakfast nook which makes for easy entertaining. I created an inexpensive table runner with blue gingham fabric from Hobby Lobby by simply cutting the edges with pinking shears to prevent fraying. I do this for almost every party because it is so easy and inexpensive to buy a few yards of fabric. The adorable cake, which also served as the centerpiece, was made by one of our neighbors. She does not have a business, but if you are local you can send me a message and I will pass along her name. She is simply the best and oh so affordable! Her cakes are absolutely beautiful but they taste even better than they look. Not to mention it was so convenient going only a few houses down to pick up the cake the morning of the party. I use them for just about everything and switch out the ribbon on top accordingly. I wrapped up the utensils in polka dot napkins from Party City and tied them with a blue ribbon. I used these matching polka dot plates and napkins , and served the cake with these coordinating dessert plates and dessert napkins. Taking a little extra time to tie your utensils is not only easy and practical it makes it so easy for guests to grab them and go! What is it about a kids table that is so sweet? I made the banner by simply cutting triangles out of craft paper and hot gluing them onto a white ribbon. Old fashioned party hats make a cute table accessory and the kids loved wearing them too. Can you spy my sweet little birthday boy in the background? I saw them and just had to have them! I had originally planned to put them in the party favor bags, but when I saw how cute they were I decided to set them out on the tables instead. They were so reasonably priced at just ten dollars for two dozen and they were the perfect finishing touch for the table. I ran into Hobby Lobby the day before the party procrastinator looking for small white metal buckets to put them in. Of course it was the day before the party and of course my local Hobby Lobby had every color bucket imaginable except for white. Why does it always work that way?! With no time to waste I threw these metal buckets in the buggy and was out spray painting them white in our backyard the night before the party. I stuck some floral foam from the DollarTree down in each bucket and topped them with white paper shreds also from the DollarTree. And obviously I just had to tie a blue ribbon around each lollipop stick. I used this cookie cutter to cut them into the dog shape. Once you have prepared your sandwiches, put them in between two damp paper towels and place them inside an airtight ziplock back. When you are ready to set your sandwiches out on your serving tray, place the damp paper towels on top of your sandwiches until your guests arrive. This will keep your bread nice and soft and prevent it from drying out before the party starts. These little dog shaped sandwiches were so simple, but everyone went crazy over them! Even I have to say they were so cute! Also on the menu: puppy chow. I made a HUGE batch of this even doubled the recipe and it was gone in no time. Note to self: next time, quadruple the recipe! Also on the menu: pimento cheese and crackers. This Palmetto pimento cheese is to die for. We bought two big tubs from Costco and every single bit of it was gone. This is another one of those things that is very inexpensive and very easy to do, but adds so much. We also had chicken fingers and honey mustard dipping sauce, a veggie tray with ranch dressing, a fruit tray, and chicken salad and croissants. All of the fruit and veggies came from Costco. I cut them up and placed them on white serving trays the night before the party. They were ready to go and all I had to do was pull them out of the fridge the morning of the party. I had originally planned on making a big batch of chicken salad what was I thinking?! For drinks we had water, tea and apple juice boxes for the children. Snips and Snails and Puppy Dog Tails Party Favors One of my favorite things to do for a party is put together cute party favor bags for the children, and these puppy dog bags did not disappoint! I started with a plain white craft bag from Hobby Lobby. I cut out the shapes for the ears, eyes, nose and hat from cardstock and used a hot glue gun to glue each piece onto the bag. I tied the top together with raffia which makes the perfect finishing touch! I set them out on our entryway table so that guests could see them when they entered and grab one to go when they left. I love the Little Golden Books because they are so classic. I made a printable tag for the book and for the puppy chow and tied them on with raffia to coordinate with the bags. I used this scalloped circle punch to cut them out. While I was cutting out the shapes for the party favor bags, I also made a puppy dog garland banner for the mantel. This puppy dog banner just may have been my favorite thing from the entire party! I love the way the baby blue stands out against all of the white! Another thing I decided the day before the party? That we needed a door hanger for the party! Then I got to painting with white craft paint and used a blue paint pen for the lettering. One of my other favorite things from the party was the giant dog wearing a party hat and holding balloons in his mouth. He greeted guests outside as they walked up to the front door. I used our jigsaw to cut out the shape and attached it to stakes to stick down into the ground. A few days before the party I had to run into Target to grab a few things. Obviously I cannot go into Target without checking out all the cuteness in the dollar spot. Lo and behold they had this cute little wooden snail! Obviously it was just meant to be : I painted him green and he looked so cute next to the dog. Happy 3rd Birthday John Davis! How cute does my sweet boy look in his puppy dog birthday shirt? How lucky am I to be able to call up Mother and place an order for custom clothing?? Fletcher was ready for a nap before the party even started and Mr. Fletcher slept through almost the entire party, which actually worked out well because we were able to give John Davis our full attention. And he definitely enjoyed that piece of cake! Who needs utensils when you can eat icing with your hands? Love these rare pictures of just me and my big boy! And my little boy, too! These pictures of our little family might just be some of my favorites of all time. But they so perfectly depict our lives right now: fast and furious with two energetic boys, but more full of love and joy than I could ever describe! And look at my beautiful Mama. But thats okay because she loves him and spoils him like only a Grandmother should. See these firemen boots? They are the only shoes John Davis will wear right now. I tried to snap a few pictures of just John Davis before the party, but most of them are just a big blur of movement. I know he is mine, but that little face still takes my breath away. I love these sweet pictures of John Davis with his cousin Riley. How cute are they together?! His mama and I were inseparable as cousins growing up and I hope Riley and John Davis are the exact same way. And would you just look at my Grandmother and how beautiful she is? We sure do love our Mamaw. It truly means the world to have us all together for special days like these. Candid Hubby… he loves birthday parties ; And my two beautiful and sweet Aunts! Now here we are together holding our own real-life baby dolls! Just as the party was about over Fletcher finally woke up from his nap and came down to say hi to everyone. Look at that sweet sleepy face. The kids barely stopped the entire afternoon and they had so much fun playing in the bounce house. It came highly recommended from my sister in law who has the same one for her kids. It has held up great over time, and even though her kids are older now they still love to play on it. John Davis especially loves the slide and he must have gone down it at least times. Another bonus? The kiddos get ALL of their energy out! I love this picture of Daddy and John Davis. These were my best attempt at getting a picture of John Davis and Fletcher together. Photographing a toddler and a baby together is a challenge like no other! These sweet boys were worn out as the party was over. We had such a great time just sitting around and spending time with our family for the rest of the afternoon. I happened to look over and snap this picture of two sleepy boys holding hands watching TV together before they crashed for the night. And since Fletcher was finally awake, I had to take the opportunity to get a few pictures of him with the puppy dog and the snail. A pee pad is a disposable, leak proof pad that is scented to attract your dog and encourage going potty on them. We highly discourage using pee pads because in the long run it is confusing to your dog. If you spend time teaching your puppy to NOT go potty inside your home and then flip-flop and begin letting them go inside your home on a pee pad, your dog will be confused. Besides, eventually you must retrain them to going outside, so the best policy is to never start letting inside be an option. Step 2: Establish a routine and schedule for your puppy Establishing a routine is the single most important step for housebreaking. The more consistent you are, the faster your puppy will learn to go outside for potty. This time will increase rapidly over the next few weeks, but that first week is going to take a lot of time and energy on your part to consistently let your puppy out on a schedule. To make being consistent easier, consider this: Set a timer When housebreaking puppies, we find that setting a timer is helpful. An hour flies by and you hardly realize it. For the first few days at least, set a timer and let your puppy out hourly, especially if your puppy is not in a crate. We will discuss that more in a bit. Timing is everything There are other times when you need to let your puppy outside. Immediately after eating or drinking your puppy should go outside. Eating and drinking will trigger a need to go potty, so to avoid accidents, take your puppy out every time they eat or drink. And if they drink a lot of water, you may have to take them out several times before they are back on schedule. Anything you can do to make going potty a routine will help your dog learn and associate that going outside is where I need to go to go potty. Use a command I know this sounds crazy but using a command can help your dog form an association between the command and going potty. At first this is meaningless to the puppy. And you cannot discipline your puppy for a potty accident in the house that you never saw happen. The solution for this is never let your puppy go unsupervised. This can be exhausting, that is why we suggest using a crate to help. The stern words must be said during the accident or immediately after to have any effect. Using a crate to house train your puppy First, while your puppy may not love his crate right away, if properly introduced and used consistently, Labs usually come to love their crates. When using a crate to housetrain your puppy, you first want to make sure that you have a very small crate. One that is just a little bigger than your puppy. This is particularly important because you do not want your puppy to be able to move around much in the crate. If they can move around, they can and often will go potty in the crate. So, start with a very small crate and get bigger crates as the puppy grows. Whatever you choose to use to block off the larger area, make sure that it is not something your puppy can chew on or ingest. You will still need to find a way to gradually increase the area that the puppy has access to, so I just find the multiple crate solution easier. But the praise must be well-timed. You should give the praise while your puppy is going potty outside or immediately after. Timing is very important! Lots of people get upset when the dog goes inside but fail to praise when the dog does the right thing. Not all dogs are the same. Some puppies will whine just before they go potty in the house, or whine at the door when they need to go. Some will hide somewhere you cannot see them and do their business there. However, I was talking to a colleague of mine who has experience working with hundreds of puppies. So, the answer to the question of can an 8-week old puppy be potty trained is yes, but it very rarely happens. In order for them to be fully potty trained by 8 weeks old, they would have to be trained by their previous caretakers. Our most recent puppy, a black Labrador Retriever named Elsa came home to us when she was exactly 8 weeks old. Her breeder started potty training her by teaching her to do her business on a piece of artificial turf. When she came home to us at 8 weeks old Elsa still had accidents in the house. Even though she understood the place to go potty I think at 8 weeks old she lacked the bladder control to hold it. First of all, most week old puppies lack the bladder control to hold their potty. It would be difficult to potty train a puppy in 7 days, but not impossible. When we brought home Raven she was just over 1 year old and she was not potty trained. We were able to potty train her in less than 7 days. However, she was older and could control her bladder, we had potty trained many puppies before her and understood how to potty train a puppy. Finally, I think her previous caretaker may have started her training before she came to our home. Since we crate train all of our puppies our answer to this question is the same as our original answer. Of course, our answer is not without a little insight. I suspect new puppy owners who use their crate properly to potty train their puppies are accident-free sooner than those who do not use a crate. The key to potty training is to prevent your puppy from having accidents in the house. The crate is a great tool to help prevent accidents in the house. A properly crate-trained puppy will not pee or poop in the crate. Therefore when you go to bed at night you should not have to worry about accidents in the house. During the day when you need a puppy break, you can crate your pup and not worry about accidents during your puppy break. General Appearance The American Bulldog is a powerful, athletic short-coated dog, strongly muscled, and well boned. The body is just slightly longer than tall. The head is large and broad, with a wide muzzle. Ears are small to medium in size, high set, and may be drop, semi-prick, rose, or cropped. The tail may be docked or natural. The American Bulldog comes in solid colors, white with colored patches, and brindle. Gender differences are well expressed in this breed, with males typically larger and more muscular than females. Honorable scars resulting from field work are not to be penalized. The American Bulldog should be evaluated as a working dog, and exaggerations or faults should be penalized in proportion to how much they interfere with the dogs ability to work. Characteristics The essential characteristics of the American Bulldog are those which enable it to work as a hog and cattle catching dog, and a protector of personal property. These tasks require a powerful, agile, confident dog with a large head and powerful jaws. The American Bulldog is a gentle, loving family companion who is fearless enough to face an angry bull or a human intruder. Note: It is common for young American Bulldogs to be somewhat standoffish with strangers, and judges should not penalize this. By the time the dog is around 18 months of age, however, the breeds normal confidence asserts itself. Disqualifications: Viciousness or extreme shyness; cowardice. Head The head is large and broad, giving the impression of great power. When viewed from the side, the skull and muzzle are parallel to one another and joined by a well-defined stop. The stop is very deep and abrupt, almost at a right angle with the muzzle. Despite the depth of the stop, the forehead is wider than it is high. Viewed from the top, the skull is square. There is a deep median furrow that diminishes in depth from the stop to the occiput. Cheek muscles are prominent. In bully dogs, the skull is generally box-shaped to rounded, with a more definitive stop, and more wrinkles than the standard type, which has a skull that is box or wedge shaped. Serious Fault: An excessively narrow skull, in any type. The length of the muzzle in the bully type dogs is 25 to 35 percent of the overall length of the head. In the standard dogs, it is 30 to 40 percent of the overall length of the head. The jaws are well muscled, displaying great strength. Lips are moderately thick, but not pendulous. Black pigment on the lips is preferred. The chin is well defined, and must neither overlap the upper lip nor be covered by it. Serious Fault: An excessively narrow muzzle in any type. Disqualification: Any dog that exhibits difficulty breathing while in the ring. In the standard type, a reverse scissors bite is preferred, a scissors bite or a moderate under bite up to inch is acceptable. An even bite is allowable but not preferred. An extreme undershot bite is considered faulty to the degree that the bite interferes with the dogs ability to work. Teeth are not visible when the mouth is closed. Worn teeth or broken teeth are acceptable. Disqualification: Overshot. Wry jaw. NOSE The nose is large, with wide, open nostrils. Black color is preferred, but shades of red or brown are acceptable. Lack of pigment is a cosmetic fault. EYES Eyes are medium in size, round to almond in shape, and set well apart. All colors are acceptable, but dark brown is preferred. Haw is not visible. Black eye rims are preferred. Faults: Very visible haws. Disqualifications: Crossed eyes. Eyes that do not match in color. EARS Ears may be cropped, but natural ears are preferred. Natural ears are small to medium in size, high set, and may be drop, semi-prick, or rose. Drop ears: The ears are set high, level with the upper line of the skull, accentuating the skulls width. At the base, the ear is just slightly raised in front and then hangs along the cheek. The tip is slightly rounded. When pulled toward the eye, the ear should not extend past the outside corner of the eye. Semi-prick ears: Same as drop ears except that only the tips of the ears drop forward. Rose ears: Rose ears are small and set high on the skull. Fault: Hound ears. Neck The neck is where the American Bulldog exerts power to bring down livestock. The neck must be long enough to exert leverage, but short enough to exert power. The neck is muscular and, at its widest point, is nearly as broad as the head, with a slight arch at the crest, and tapering slightly from shoulders to the head. A slight dewlap is acceptable. Faults: Neck too short and thick; thin or weak neck. Forequarters The shoulders are strong and well muscled. The shoulder blade is well laid back and forms, with the upper arm, an apparent degree angle. The tips of the shoulder blades are set about 2 to 3 finger-widths apart. The elbows are set on a plane parallel to the body, neither close to the body nor turned out. Viewed from the front, the forelegs are perpendicular to the ground or may, especially in a dog with a very broad chest, incline slightly inward. The pasterns are short, powerful, and slightly sloping when viewed in profile. Viewed from the front, the pasterns are straight. Body The chest is deep and moderately wide, with ample room for heart and lungs. The ribs are well sprung from the spine and then flatten to form a deep body, extending at least to the elbows or lower in adult dogs. The topline inclines very slightly downward from well-developed withers to a broad, muscular back. The loin is short, broad, and slightly arched, blending into a slightly sloping croup. The flank is moderately tucked up and firm. Serious Faults: Swayback; sloping topline. Hindquarters The hindquarters are well muscled and broad. The width and angulation of the hindquarters is in balance with the width and angulation of the forequarters. The lower thighs are muscular and short. Viewed from the side, the rear pasterns are well let down and perpendicular to the ground. Viewed from the rear, the rear pasterns are straight and parallel to one another. Serious Faults: Narrow or weak hindquarters. Faults: Cowhocks; open hocks. Feet The feet are round, medium in size, well arched, and tight. Fault: Splayed feet. The seriousness of this fault is based on the amount of splay in the feet. Tail The American Bulldog may have a natural or a docked tail, but the natural tail is preferred. The natural tail is very thick at the base, set low, and tapers to a point. It should reach to the hock joint. A pump handle tail is preferred, but any tail carriage from upright, when the dog is excited, to relaxed between the hocks is acceptable. Serious Faults: Tail curled over the back; corkscrew tail; kinked tail, tail that ends in a complete curl; upright tail when the dog is relaxed. Coat The coat is short, close, and varies from soft to stiff to the touch. It is one inch or less in length. Disqualifications: Longer than one inch, any feathering, or a wavy coat. Color Any color, color pattern, or combination of colors is acceptable, except for solid black, solid blue, merle, and tricolor. A full black mask is also unacceptable. Some dark brindle coats may appear black unless examined in very bright light. A buckskin color pattern, where the base of the hair is fawn and the tips are black, may also appear solid black. A judge should not disqualify an American Bulldog for black color unless the dog has been examined in sunlight or other equally bright light. Disqualifications: Solid black or blue with no white markings; tricolor; merle; full black mask. Height and Weight The American Bulldog must be sufficiently powerful and agile to chase, catch, and bring down free-ranging livestock. Dogs capable of doing this come in a rather wide range of height and weight. Standards are leaner and more athletic in appearance. Bullys are thicker and more powerful in appearance. Males are typically larger with heavier bone and more muscle than females. Both sexes, however, should have a well-balanced overall appearance and all dogs should be well conditioned, neither over nor under weight.
