Open 7 Days Choosing a Healthier Puppy The reality is that veterinarians generally have vastly different criteria than breeders for choosing a healthy puppy. Breeders adhere to standards that are for the show ring, not health, whereas veterinarians are more interested in health. So with this in mind, What do you need to know to choose the healthiest pup you can? We suggest you follow these guidelines: 1. Look at the parents as well as the pup, but you gain more from the parents. Choose as wide nostrils as possible. Choose the longest noses you can find yes we agree shorter noses are cuter, but that comes with a price. That price is a sadder pup through life and far higher veterinary costs. So please be acutely aware of this when choosing your pup. Choose longer necks and narrower chests. Cambridge studies are showing that this is a better predictor of less breathing concerns than even long noses. In our opinion the classic stocky dog that many breeders prefer are the worst for health concerns including back problems. See a more detailed explanation below. If possible, watch and play with the parents for 15 minutes. How noisy are they? How much do they need to stop and rest? Behaviour: Ensure parents and pup are friendly and happy, and that you can open their mouths and play with them. It is irrelevant what your breeder tells you about breathing concerns as they pretty much all say their dogs have never had any breathing concerns! There is no testing, standard or certificates for breathing concerns so you need to follow the above guidelines. Shorter, wider necks, narrow nostrils and shorter noses all mean a much higher chance of breathing concerns. Longer noses, longer necks, wider nostrils and narrower chests are less chance of more severe concerns. There are some back scoring systems in place that your breeder may or may not have engaged in. Our concern is the current systems which are employed are grossly inadequate, passing healthy backs that potentially still have severe and significant problems. A grade 3 is a severe deformed vertebrae that has a high chance of causing pain or a prolapsed disc. A grade 2 is a moderately deformed one and a grade 1 a mildly deformed one. An overall score of 15 has been considered a pass, and reasonable to breed from. Potentially, such a score may entail 5 shocking grade 3 vertebrae if no other deformed ones exist , or 10 moderately deformed ones. Ask for the x-rays for both parents and pup if they have been done, and get your own brachycephalic vet to look at them and interpret any score that it comes with. At the very least, ask the exact score, how many of each type of vertebrae and where in the spine they are. There are different areas that carry different risks. In our opinion the standard is severely inadequate for breeding which is allowing this problem to continue. DNA Testing This one worries us the most. DNA testing is done for a number of extremely rare conditions that are almost nonexistent anyway, and none of them test for hemivertebrae or breathing concerns , allergies, hip dysplasia , cherry eyes , or any of the encephalitis seizure problems these breeds can suffer. The breed was quite popular among lace workers in the city of Nottingham and when many lace workers emigrated to France for better opportunities, they naturally brought their little bulldogs with them. The French Bulldog thrived in France and Europe. Average Life Span When considering a dog, please realise that you are taking it on for its lifetime. The average life span is 11 to 14 years. Temperament Frenchies are alert, intelligent, stubborn, inquisitive, loyal, lovable clowns. Vivacious and deeply affectionate. General Breed Description The French Bulldog is an active breed in general, but some can be couch potatoes. They do not require a lot of exercise, particularly as puppies, only short walks and never on hot days. As long as they have adequate shallow water they can wallow in, they are happy. Best in homes with a backyard. They prefer human company to other dogs, but live happily with another dogs. They can be very possessive about their humans, food, toys, etc. They are a natural bob tailed breed. Coat and Care requirement An easy coated breed that should be regularly bathed and brushed. Particular attention must be taken with ears, nose rolls and tail folds. During summer on hot days, your French Bulldog will enjoy his time inside near the airconditioner rather than outside. Size Weight: Males .Health All breeds have individual health issues. When speaking to breeders in is recommended you enquire about breed health and what health testing the breeder does. The French Bulldog is generally a healthy breed, however health conditions do occur occasionally. As a brachycephalic short nosed breed, they may be susceptible to breathing issues BOAS , spinal deformities and also heart issues may affect this breed. These issues can be vet checked. Suitability They are an ideal pet for all owners and are great with families. As with all dogs, young children and pets should always be supervised when together. French Bulldogs are usually good with other dogs and cats if they are socialised well as a puppy. Owners must be aware of possible heat stress during hot weather. In Conclusion Now you know a little more about this breed. If you have decided this is the dog for you and wish to investigate further, please contact the Breed Club or Dogs Victoria. They will be able to give you information about available puppies and also suggest dog events where you can see the breed and speak to breeders. In this way you will gain a better perspective of the breed and its needs. With any breed of dog, it is important to research and determine suitability for your lifestyle before committing to a puppy which will be a part of your family for many years to come. Whilst many breeds are recommended for families, it is imperative that when children are with dogs they are supervised at all times. Basic obedience training is a vital part of dog ownership. Dogs Victoria is about the responsible ownership of all dogs and in particular the preservation of pure breeds. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T.
However, you only need to stimulate the puppy if it is eating and not with the mother. Keep the puppy warm and continue rubbing it to help it breathe and move. This should be continued until the puppy is under veterinary supervision. For a puppy with anasarca to have a chance of survival, it needs to be treated by a veterinarian. If your dog gave birth at home, then you need to take the puppy to a veterinary office right away. If your normal veterinary office is closed when the mother dog gives birth, then you should take the affected puppy to the closest 24 veterinary emergency clinic. As soon as a puppy is born with anasarca it should begin treatment to stand any chance of survival. Treatment usually includes giving the puppy a diuretic to reduce the amount of fluid the puppy is retaining. If the condition is mild, the puppies can go on to live normal lives. Even with prompt treatment, however, a puppy with a severe case of anasarca has a very slim chance of survival. If the puppy has a severe case of anasarca, it has a very low chance of survive. If this is the case with your puppy, then you should focus on making sure it is comfortable and pain free instead of focusing on recovery. If it doesn't, then your veterinarian will have some suggestions about how to stop the puppies' suffering. This could include keeping it warm and giving it medication to alleviate any pain. In some cases, this could mean compassionate euthanasia. Prepare yourself that the outcome may be death. In many cases of anasarca, the puppy is still born or dies quickly after birth. Have you ever heard of Bulldog Water Puppies? Dog lovers rarely talk about water puppies despite being common. This is a potentially fatal condition that is commonly found in short-nosed dog breeds such as Bulldogs , French Bulldogs , Boston Terrier , Pugs , and more but it has also been seen in other dog breeds such a Labrador Retrievers and Yorkshire Terriers. Water Puppy Syndrome can affect only one or two puppies, or even the entire litter. These puppies are born suffering from Edema —an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in different organs, cavities or body tissues. Water puppies can be 2 to 4 times larger than normal pups in the litter. Sadly, most of them immediately pass away or are stillborn. Water Puppies who are born alive may be categorized as mild, medium or severely affected. Puppies born with Water Puppy Syndrome are also found to be suffering from a combination of vertebral column defects and other abnormalities like cleft palates. What causes Bulldog Water Puppies? In fact, pregnant dogs need plenty of water because the amniotic fluid changes constantly. Signs your Bulldog is going to have Water Puppies There is no surefire way to tell if your Bulldog is going to have water puppies. But here are some signs to watch out for: Drinking unusually larger amounts of water, Shiny-looking something like onion-skin teats and surrounding tissue, Nipple-discharge early in pregnancy. An ultrasound is thought to be a better tool to detect these Water Puppies. Do Bulldog Water Puppies live long? Survival rates in Bulldog Water Puppies are very low. Sometimes, veterinarians recommend putting the puppy down. But some Bulldog breeders report that mild to medium Bulldog Water Puppies who survived the first two to three days grew up to be normal puppies. However, most of these survivors have underlying health problems like cleft palates. A Bulldog breeder also told Bulldog Guide that a couple of Bulldog Water Puppies he took care of had one odd thing in common. One of the surviving Anasarca puppies Toto took care of. He is now 3 years old. The report written by Dr. Constanza Bini et al. But after performing a C-section on the 55th day of pregnancy, they found out that two of the Bulldog puppies have different degrees of subcutaneous edema. Unfortunately, the first and biggest puppy they took out was dead. The second puppy, a male Bulldog, was suffering from mild Anasarca and fortunately survived after performing a series of treatments. The third Bulldog was a normal and healthy pup. Despite managing to live, Bulldog Water Puppy survivors are recommended to be neutered or spayed and spared from breeding. How to help Bulldog Water Puppies? There is no sure way to treat and save an Anasarca from death. But veterinarians have been performing a series of procedures to help Anasarca or Water puppies. Water Puppies must be given treatment as soon as possible. Then, stimulate his genitalia to encourage him to urinate. Bini have been using Lasix, a brand name of the chemical furosemide. This chemical is a diuretic-saluretic, which slows down the re-absorption of sodium. Furosemide must be given immediately intravenously or intramuscularly to the puppy after birth. The administration of Furosemide can be done again every 30 to 45 minutes. But never do this more than three times as it can cause dehydration. Stimulating the pups to pee is also important and must be done every two to three minutes. The vet can also use elastic bandages gently wrapped around the pups to help push out fluid. Mildly-affected Water Puppies can take 1 to 2 hours to breathe normally while moderately-affected water pups take longer — about one and a half hours to four hours — to breathe normally. Severely affected water puppies are very difficult to save and they drown from the fluids and die just within 30 minutes after birth. Severely-affected Water Puppies are known to split in half the abdomen just from handling. How to prevent your Bulldog from having water babies Since the real cause of this condition is still not known, there is no surefire way to prevent it. However, veterinarians and experts recommend the following: Feed a pregnant Bulldog low-salt diet, Reduce — if not remove — anything that can cause potential trauma, Administer autogenous minute virus vaccine if minute virus is suspected. How to Participate in Anasarca Research Bulldog owners and breeders are encouraged to participate in genetic research to identify and determine a marker for Anasarca. The researchers of the study are requesting DNA samples from affected puppies and parents who produced Anasarca or Water Puppies. This research is being conducted at the University of Illinois. If you wish to be involved with the study, you may contact Dr. Michael at mwhughes usc. Leave a Reply: Leave a comment below and share your thoughts. Donate to Support this Research Program Area Abstract Dystocia is one of the most significant reproductive health concerns for dog owners and breeders. While there can be many causes of dystocia, the occurrence of so-called "water" or "walrus" puppies is one of the more common reasons within particular breeds. Water puppies suffer from the abnormal accumulation of body fluids, called anasarca, resulting in a generalized swelling of the body. Normal delivery through the birth canal then becomes difficult or even impossible, oftentimes requiring intervention by caesarean section. Water puppies are generally stillborn or die shortly after birth. While anasarca affects many dog breeds, it appears to be more frequent in the brachycephalic breeds including the Bulldog, French bulldog, Pug, Boston terrier and others. Due to the known genetic relationship between these breeds and the recurrence of anasarca puppies in specific matings, it is strongly believed that there is a significant genetic risk factor associated with this problem. Modern genetic tools and techniques have greatly improved the ability to identify specific variations in DNA which may be responsible for such traits. Thus, in an effort initiated by the Bulldog Club of America and Bulldog Club of America Charitable Health Fund, samples from newborn puppies with anasarca, their parents, and non-affected puppies have been collected, and will be utilized to analyze for a genetic basis of anasarca in an effort to develop a DNA-based test that can be used to screen for and reduce the incidence of this devastating disease. Publication s Hekman, J. S Research. Water Walrus Puppies Anasarca puppies Page 3 "My pup was a singleton , born to my girl who had had a litter the previous year, a litter of 6 normal healthy English Cocker Spaniel pups. This time we used the son of the boy we used last year. This was only his second litter too. His first a healthy litter of 8 pups. Sadly the pup was severely affected, as the pictures show. First and foremost, I would like to thank you for all of the valuable information I found on your website. While re-reading your posted information I came across the section on Water Puppies, and after being told that an x-ray showed that my female was carrying one puppy that appeared to be twice as large as the others, and what I thought to be a strange shiny look to her breast and nipple area, I began to worry. I contacted my daughter who will be a Dr. She explained that the occurrence of "Water Puppies" is rare and that I need not worry as pups of the same litter are often many different sizes. Maybe it was a coincidence that I came upon your site and all of the information you provided on "what to do when things go wrong".In June my female Labrador delivered three healthy pups followed by a "Water Puppy" which was very large and she was having great difficulty pushing her out. I followed the advice and " feathered " her cervix to see if it would help her labor progress, and it was almost instantly helpful. The fourth puppy water puppy was born dead, her skin was so swollen that it was split about her belly and across her face, it also appeared that she may have also had a clef palate. The fifth pup was born healthy with no complications. My own veterinarian had never heard of this before, and neither had my brother-in-law who is also a vet. I have included a picture that I took of the "Water Puppy" four hours after birth so you may share it with your readers. The swelling had decreased considerably and absorbed into the white towel that I had wrapped her in. This is a French Bulldog male puppy. He was delivered via c-section and lived about 30 minutes. I believe, according to the Dr. Never in my long-time practice have I seen anything like this. The mother dog did not have any unusual signs of any kind during pregnancy. Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery Male French Bulldog water puppy that lived about 30 minutes after delivery I bred my French Bulldog two years ago and she too had a water pup. She only had two puppies, one was perfectly fine and the other was a water puppy. Since we were already planning a C-section birth, we already knew there was a water puppy. The vet and his staff worked feverishly to revive this pup. Miraculously, the puppy made it and actually started to nurse. However, we noticed right away he could not keep the milk down. Every time it nursed, milk would come back up out of his nose and mouth. The vet took an X-ray and unfortunately found a really terrible birth defect; the esophagus was not connected to the stomach so the milk had nowhere to go but back out. My heart just sank knowing what a fighter this puppy was to be able to come out of that first ordeal of being a water puppy and now we had to put him down humanely so he would not starve to death. I too was put off from breeding after this as I got so attached to this puppy in such a short amount of time. Thank you again to everyone who shared their stories as I am still so sad from that event but know I'm certainly not alone. However, take heart, the other puppy is doing so well that he's even being shown and has won some ribbons to date! Pregnant dams need lots of water, as the amniotic fluid is constantly changing. Water babies are like babies that become anemic low blood in utero. They get severely edematous. This is usually due to parvovirus or an immune response blood group incompatibility. Image of a newborn water puppy— MistyTrails plays "midwoof" to many local breeders. Water Puppy Syndrome Edema:an abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in various organs, cavities, or tissues of the body. We can learn a bit from "people" medicine—water babies hydrops usually occurs from lack of red blood cells in the baby as a result of an infection or immune reaction. It can affect only one pup in a litter or the entire litter. Water puppies are impossible to deliver naturally, as they are huge, swollen, waterlogged puppies. A C-section is a must, as these puppies are generally two to four times the size of their littermates. These pups range from mild, medium to severely affected. If your dam is pushing on a single puppy, has contractions for two hours without puppy presentation into the birth canal, especially after delivering one or two normal pups, you should seek veterinary assistance, as the remaining pups can die along with the dam. This is a Medical Emergency! There are many opinions on why these water pups develop; some say it is congenital or environmental, some say diet, trauma to the dam, or even a virus. The condition is also occasionally seen in other dog breeds. An x-ray does not always show the larger size of these puppies, as the weight is mostly fluid. An ultrasound is thought to detect these puppies. Water pups are usually born alive, limp and weak, and they look like someone blew them up like a balloon. The dam was supplying the needed oxygen and nutrition through the placenta and cord, but soon after birth the medium to severely affected pup will suffocate by the pressure of the fluid. Some people report the mildly affected pups that survive the first two to three days turned out to be normal pups. Others say there were other underlying problems and their water pups died within the first week. The choice to try and save or to let the pup go without suffering will be between you and your vet, how much experience you have behind you, and if you are willing to put in the time PLUS be prepared for heartache. Trying to save these pups at this time is considered experimental. The cause and treatment of this condition are unknown at this time. Treatment: Treatment needs to be given right away for a mildly affected pup. Elevate the head and extend the neck for a more clear airway. To encourage urination, run one or two fingers over the genitalia. Some veterinarians have recently had great success using Lasix in saving water puppies. Lasix is the brand name of the chemical furosemide. Furosemide is a diuretic-saluretic, which inhibits the re-absorption of sodium salt. The drug is administered intravenously immediately after birth of the water puppy. Administer furosemide Lasix. Caution: more than three could cause dehydration. Keep the pups warm and stimulate urination as described above every —two to three minutes. Elastic bandages have also been used to push out fluid not too tight. Mildly affected pups can take one to two hours to breathe normally. Moderately affected pups take 90 minutes to four hours to breathe normally. Medium to severely affected pups are difficult to save; they usually drown within 30 minutes. Severely bloated pups have been known to split open at the abdomen just from handling. Autopsies have shown that the organs are saturated in fluid and the life sustaining organs cannot function, causing the pups to drown. Theories: An inuterine reaction to sodium, or an inability to process proteins. Hypothyrodism, as well as an inability of the lymphmatic system to drain effectively due to the anatomy. None of these ideas have ever been proven. Water puppies are often seen associated with a combination of vertebral column defects and often have further abnormalities, particularly cleft palates. Some Findings on Causes still not proven Congenital anasarca congenital generalized subcutaneous edema. The etiology of congenital anasarca is not well defined prenatal cardiovascular anomaly A traumatic origin with disruption of the placenta as a fetus suffering from anasarca is usually the sole occupant of a uterine horn filled with a large amount of hemorrhagic fluid. Could be caused by a virus, it has been attributed to the after-effects of the mother's oronasal infection with the minute virus during the last trimester of pregnancy associated with myocarditis. In the latter case, elasticity of the fetus' skin allows extravasation of transudate that is compensated for by the immediate supply of fluid via the umbilical cord. These puppies usually die within less than 36 hours. Prevention Low-salt diet. Reduce potential trauma isolate pregnant dams Autogenous minute virus vaccine in the case of suspicion of minute virus anarsarca en-zootic within the same breeding facility According to doctors, human babies can be born with this too. Human version: Fetal hydrops the cause is not yet known, but there are many theories In humans, edema is considered a congenital syndrome that happens in utero, and doctors figure it is most often caused by a virus slap cheek virus, and a human parvo-type virus B or it can be caused by a liver malfunction. In the U. Figures from Thailand suggest an estimated incidence of one case per , pregnancies. It is not a labor-induced issue, it happens prenatally for unknown reasons. There are photos of dwarf looking puppies that may fall into this category. If you suspect your dam may deliver water puppies consult your vet. Courtesy of MistyTrails Havanese.

Please feel free to contact us for any inquries. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. I wanted to reach out and send some photos of Gus who is now a little over a year old. He has gotten into Dock Diving in the last few months and has earned his Dock Senior title. Thank you for a great dog! When I tell you that he did it with no effort, I'm not exaggerating. He did it all on his own! I think he would have passed the test when I received him in July. I think you and your staff should be very proud of the training you provide your puppies! Please thank everyone who worked with Dwayne. In two weeks, he will become a therapy dog with Easter Seals of Alabama. Jen was so helpful, knowledgeable, and professional throughout the whole adoption process. She communicated regularly with us, providing so many updates and videos along the way. We are so fortunate for her and her staff! Thank you Jen and Eagleridge Golden Retrievers!! Jen was always super responsive, knowledgeable and able to answer our many questions. We have had Kevin for about a month and a half now we got him in September and he is settling in perfectly. Interaction between puppies Appropriate puppy behavior is an indication that puppies have been permitted to remain with the mother dog and each other long enough to get some socialization pre-training under their belts. Puppy socialization and early development Puppies go through two fear periods as they grow up. The first period is from 8 to 11 weeks and the second period is from 6 to 14 months. Puppies that are properly fed, handled and socialized will demonstrate basic self-confidence and a playful nature when you bring them home. This will help them successfully weather the fear periods, especially the first one that begins about the time they come home with you. I know I did when my wife persuaded us to go and see our own dog for the first time. Of the four of them, this one little fella scampered over to me and immediately started chewing on my knuckles. That when I fell in love with him. It was a really simple decision in which one we wanted to take home. As you know, we went on to name him Claude. But, given hindsight, there are some questions I would have asked the breeder before deciding to buy him. And there are also some things I should have looked for too. It was our first ever dog though, so hindsight is a wonderful thing. However, there are unscrupulous breeders and there are certain health and physical problems view all Frenchie health conditions and concerns you should check for before you get too excited. It also includes some questions to ask a breeder when buying a French Bulldog puppy. Choose a male puppy if you want a more energetic dog: or a female if you want a more relaxed dog. There are subtle behavioural differences in the two genders which you can read in this blog post where I discuss the differences between male and female Frenchies. Make sure your breeder is knowledgeable: on breeding and cares for the puppies. I would always do online research into the breeder before I would even visit them. Be wary of what seems to be an abnormally low price: this can be a sign of an unhealthy puppy. Red eye can be a signal of a health problem. Ask the breeder how many litters the mother has had: a French Bulldog should only really have 1 litter a year , preferably only one every couple of years. Any more than that is a warning sign that she is being over-bred, and health issues could be present. Ask if the puppy has been checked by a vet: and has had the relevant vaccinations. If not, walk away as this should be handled by the breeder before the puppies go on sale. It can give you some insight into what type of dog your Frenchie puppy is going to grow into. If the breeder refuses to let you see the mother, then walk away as this is a huge warning sign. Ask if the parents have had health checks: as this can give you insight into any potential health problems further down the line. Conditions to look out for include hip problems, cataracts, cherry eye , deafness, and soft palate issues. Ask how old the parents are: if the mother is less than 3 years old, any genetic health conditions might not yet have manifested themselves. Ask how often the puppies have been handled: the more the young pups have been handled by humans frequently it will be far easier to get him used to all the excitement in store when you get him home. Ask to speak to a previous client: the best breeders will be more than happy to let you talk with people who have previously bought a Frenchie puppy from them. Ask for a hearing test: whilst this might not always be possible, it is a concern. White Frenchies in particular can develop hearing loss at birth due to a congenital issue. You can read more about this my recent French Bulldog hearing loss blog post. Cheap and rude breeders are an absolute no-no. When buying your Frenchie, you need a caring breeder that gladly answers your questions and shows you the parents and tell you about their history and problems. If you are dealing with a breeder who is just looking to make a quick buck and not telling you what you should know then walk away. How to best buy a healthy French bulldog puppy There are several factors you should consider before buying a French Bulldog who is hopefully going to live a healthy life. Sadly Frenchies can have some severe health issues in their bloodlines which you should look out for when purchasing your puppy. Health issues can include:. This popularity attracts them to inexperienced and unscrupulous breeders. So how do you know the difference between a responsible and irresponsible breeder? Many French Bulldogs participate in Agility and do equally well at Obedience. There are concerns with dogs sold as French Bulldogs who have off-standard colours and coats that are sold for large amounts, for example black and tan, merle and lilac. This hybrid is known for being highly unpredictable when it comes to distinguishing character traits. Even with a litter of puppies, you can expect each puppy to look different from one another. To get an in-depth understanding of possibilities, we need to look at the parents. If a Toy Poodle is the parent, the offspring is sometimes referred to as a Toy Doxiepoo. This dog is most noted for high intelligence, easy trainability, and a friendly temperament. It does well as a family dog, especially around children. Poodles excel in dog competitions. They are quick to learn commands and obey on a whim. This also makes them well-behaved, low-maintenance pets. The Poodle is famous for its luxurious coat of tight-knit curls. This type of coat is low-shedding and touted as hypoallergenic. I mean, a curly-coated Poodle mixed with a short-legged Dachshund? The Dachshund is a hunting breed, which explains their love for chasing down tennis balls they were used to hunt small critters. Though loving and affectionate, the Dachshund has a stubborn streak. This can make training a bit of a challenge. They are also known to bark a lot, but training can break this habit in a heartbeat. The Dachshund coat comes in numerous colors and textures, which plays a big role in how much a Doxiepoo will shed. Dachshunds exhibit short, long or wired hair. Expect low to moderate shedding, depending on the type of coat. Also, this breed is not hypoallergenic. What does a Doxipoo look like? You, as the dog owner, must be open and have no expectations. Keeping the Poodle and Dachshund in mind, the size of Doxiepoo can be small to medium, growing anywhere from 17 to 23 in 43 to 58 cm and weighing from 10 to 30 lbs 4 to 13 kg. The coat colors of a Daxiedoodle can be any combination of black, gray, white, brown or tan. This video starring Doxiepoo puppies showcases just how varied a litter can be. Is the Doxipoo hypoallergenic? Shedding is low to moderate, depending on the long or short hair it may inherit from the Dachshund. As for Doxiepoo grooming, daily brushing will ensure minimum shedding. If a breeder guarantees that a litter of Doxiepoo puppies is hypoallergenic- this is a big red flag. No one can ensure the traits of a hybrid! Doxipoo temperament and behavior You can rest assured that the Doxiepoo is a good family dog. These crossbreeds are well-behaved and loving, though sometimes they do tend to love a bit too much. The Doxiepoo wants to be the only fur baby in your life, and it has been known to not take well to other pets in the household. They are also prone to incessant barking. If you welcome a mini guard that will alert you to any outside danger, the Doxiepoo will not fail you. Doxiepoo training: easy or challenging? The Dachshund Poodle mix can go two ways with training. The Poodle is as quick and reliable as a dog can get, but a Dachshund is a stubborn fellow indeed. The key is to start them young. Early socialization will help Doxipoo pups accept other pets. Exposure to other dogs at the dog park can help with this. Consistent obedience training emphasis on consistent will make the Dachshund Poodle mix obedient, confident, and calm. Maintaining a patient and positive attitude whilst training is also important. Praise your Doxiepoo and reward her with treats. Never yell or use excessive force. Keeping your Dachshund Poodle mix fit The best way to combat disease is by making sure your Doxiepoo gets 60 minutes of exercise per day. Also, this breed is quite hyperactive and needs to burn energy to keep from chewing up your favorite shoes or digging up the petunias. Take your little furball for a walk around the block or to the dog park for some socialization and playtime. Feeding a Doxipoo This breed has a voracious appetite and struggles with obesity. Keep it light on the treats and control the menu each day- never let your dog overeat. A good rule of thumb is to feed your Dachshund Poodle mix 1. Divide this amount into 3 meals. How much are Doxiepoo puppies? Why such a wide range? When it comes to designer dogs, especially one as mixed as the Doxipoo, you want to be informed about your decision. Ethical breeders will tell you that they cannot guarantee how a litter of puppies will turn out, but they can tell you about the puppies parents. They will be happy to meet you at the breeding facility and show you around. Also, ask for testimonials. Reputable Doxiepoo breeders will be able to show their worth by telling you about past transactions with happy customers. They guarantee that the puppy will act or look a certain way. You ask to visit where the puppies grew up, but the breeder refuses. Dachshund Poodle mixes end up at rescue centers this way. They are friendly, intelligent, people-oriented and are loyal to their families. The Doxie is comfortable to be around children and pets, but supervision is recommended. Though, these dogs often pick up the bad traits of its parents, like the stubborn behavior of the Dachshund. The Doxiepoo is mischievous and funny that would love to dig and play around or get cuddled. They would often develop excessive barking behaviors, which might at times be obnoxious, but adds to its quality of being a good watchdog. Care Exercise These little dogs do not need heavy exercise schedules because of their little size. Only a fair amount of exercise and play session keeps them fit. Take your doxie out for a walk every day, since they stay happy walking and running outdoors. Grooming Shedding mainly depends on the nature of the coat your pet doxie was born. General grooming is essential for the dog, though. Brush their coat few times a week, or even daily, to avoid matting and retain the natural sheen. But if you decide to keep it long, grooming them occasional by professional hands is recommended. For curlier poodle-like coats, clip them once in every 1 to 2 months. Health Problems Crossbreed dogs are generally healthy, and so is the doxiepoo. The only health concern might be genetically transmitted or hereditary diseases. Skin and nasal allergies can also be a concern to your doxiepoo. Those with longer or denser hair types might be even more susceptible to these conditions. Training By virtue of its inherited intelligence, training your doxiepoo is not at all tough. They would pick up training very quickly, though, at times might display obstinate behavior. This can easily be resolved by means of rewards and positive reinforcements. Begin your obedience training at its puppy-age and allowing them socialize frequently. This should keep a check on possible behavioral issues like barking habits and stubbornness, as they grow up. Insist on a raw meat diet. At that, a chicken meal can be the first choice, especially for the pups. There is also liver, lamb meal, salmon meal, and other mineral-enriched dog foods that we generally serve to the dogs of its size, with the same health history. If you feed your dog with dry kibble, be sure they are of high quality. Interesting Facts The doxiepoo breed is popular in the Southern states. Doxiepoo has been immortalized in a kitschy pin on web site eBay. Since they differ so much from each other by appearance, identifying a doxiepoo puppy is tough. While this mixed breed can have famously endless combinations of traits, they are known for being affectionate, intelligent, and playful. The list of names the Doxiepoo is known by is as long as the parent Dachshund: Doodle, Dachdoodle, Doxiedoodle, Doxiepoodle, Dachshunddoodle, and Dachshundpoo. This is one of the most unpredictable pairings among mixed breeds, even within a single litter. This means they often end up in shelters. However, with such winning traits, they are wonderfully adoptable dogs. They do well with children, but they do best in single-pet homes. Doxiepoos are energetic but adapt well to both apartments and houses , provided they are given enough exercise time. See below for all Doxiepoo facts and mixed dog breed characteristics! Contrary to popular belief, the suitability of dogs who adapt well to apartment living goes beyond its size. Apartment dwellers have a myriad of dog breeds to choose from as potential companions, with various factors to consider. Some large breeds can adapt well to apartment living and have lower activity levels. Others may require more space and possess higher energy levels. On the other hand, certain small dog breeds with abundant energy can still find contentment with indoor playtime or brisk walks. However, when selecting a dog that adapts well apartments, it is essential to prioritize your neighbors. This makes them less suitable for apartment living. Therefore, desirable qualities in an apartment dog encompass being quiet, low-energy, and displaying polite behavior towards other residents. Apartment dwellers have a wealth of dog breeds to choose from as potential furry companions. While some larger breeds can adapt well to apartment living, with lower, others may require more space and have higher energy levels, making them less suitable for smaller apartments. Conversely, certain small dog breeds with higher energy levels can still thrive in apartments, finding contentment through indoor playtime or brisk walks. By considering these factors, you can find a dog that will adapt well to apartment living and create a harmonious living environment for everyone involved. Doxiepoos are intelligent, self-confident, and spirited little pups. Little is known about how the mixed breed came to be, but dachshund and poodle mixes have become a favorite thanks to their cute appearance and affectionate personalities. Doxiepoos have moderate energy levels and a high need for mental stimulation, and these mixed breed dogs are big barkers that aren't afraid to sound the alarm, says Jennifer Gregory, vice president of Doxie by Proxy Rescue. Appearance The doxiepoo is not a pure breed and, with no breed standard for how these mixed breed dogs should look, there are an infinite number of factors influencing their appearance. Depending on the traits inherited from his parent breed, your doxiepoo can be short and long like a dachshund but covered in curly poodle hair. Or, he might have longer legs and a more petite build like his poodle parent with the straight hair and long noses that define dachshunds. He can also come in a range of colors, including black, brown, grey, cream, white, and numerous color patterns. Though no dog is completely hypoallergenic , poodles' curly, low-shedding hair is often well-suited for people who tend to be sneezy around dogs. A doxiepoo's size can also be hard to pin down. Poodles can be toy , miniature , and standard sizes while dachshunds are either miniature or standard. Doxiepoos are a cross between either dachshund variety and a toy or miniature poodle. This means full-grown doxiepoos can stand anywhere between 5—15 inches tall and weigh 5—30 pounds. Both dachshunds and poodles are known for being self-confident, playful, affectionate with their families, and good with other dogs. Gregory often describes doxiepoos as, " small dogs with big dog personalities. A lot. Doxiepoos tend to be big barkers , too, and want to sound the alarm every time the doorbell rings, a squirrel runs past, and the mail is delivered, which makes most ill-suited to apartment living. Courtesy of dox-atlas. He'll love spending time with his family and will happily accept the role of lap dog. Even strangers can quickly win over a doxiepoo, making fast friends with the pint-sized pooches—especially if treats are involved. Living Needs As small dogs, doxiepoos don't need wide open spaces to thrive. With regular walks or backyard playtime, the breed can live happily in cities, suburbs, or rural areas—but think twice before bringing a doxiepoo into an apartment or townhouse. Not only may their frequent barking rack up noise complaints from the neighbors, doxiepoos with short legs and long, dachshund-like backs may struggle climbing up the stairs, especially as they get older. Doxiepoos can get along well with family members of all ages, but Gregory recommends homes with older children or no children for small breed dogs—they can be more easily injured if a child drops them or trips over them. But if you teach your kids how to properly interact with pets , a doxiepoo could be the perfect buddy for your family. Both dachshunds and poodles are known to get along well with other dogs, but their historic hunting instincts could cause them to see other small animals as something to chase. Introductions to cats and other small animals should be done slowly, with caution and supervision. Care Most doxiepoos require minimal grooming; all it takes is regular brushing and the occasional bath to keep most doxiepoo coats looking their best. But Gregory says those who inherit a coat similar to their poodle parent, or those who have wiry hair or long locks, will need extra grooming and an occasional trip to a professional to prevent matting. Regardless of their coat type, doxiepoos need regular nail trims , ear cleanings , and routine dental care. Doxiepoos hail from athletic stock; poodles and dachshunds were both bred to hunt. The poodle is known as a "duck dog" in France because the breed started out as a retrieving water dog, and the dachshund was bred to burrow into holes in search of badgers. Doxiepoos aren't known as great hunting dogs, but they often retain the energy levels of their athletic working ancestors. Courtesy of the. Choose activities that challenge their intelligent poodle side and appeal to their independent dachshund natures. Training with treats is always a hit! Poodles are super smart and dachshunds are known for being curious—traits that could get doxiepoos into trouble. Regular physical and mental stimulation hello, puzzle toys will help your doxiepoo burn off some energy and alleviate boredom. Health Doxiepoos have a long lifespan , living anywhere between 10—18 years. While mixed breed dogs are generally believed to have fewer health issues than purebred dogs, doxiepoos are prone to some of the same health problems as their parent breeds. Dachshunds, with their long backs, are prone to the disease and doxiepoos that share a similar stature might be affected, too. IVDD causes severe pain, impairs movement, and, in severe cases, can lead to partial paralysis. Medication can be used to treat IVDD, but surgery may also be required. Gregory suggests helping doxiepoos maintain a healthy weight and prohibiting them from jumping on or off the furniture to minimize the risk of back injuries and IVDD. Small breeds like the dachshund and poodle are also at higher risk of luxating patella , a condition triggered when the kneecap patella moves out of its normal location luxates and makes it hard for dogs to put weight on the affected leg. While it's often not painful, more severe causes can cause chronic dislocation, which puts doxiepoos at higher risk of other injuries such as torn cruciate ligaments. History While not much is known about how doxiepoos came to be, their parent breeds both have long and strikingly similar histories. Both dachshunds and poodles hail from Germany, and both were bred as hunting dogs. Dachshunds were bred with long, lean bodies that allowed them to burrow into holes in pursuit of badgers. Poodles, on the other hand, had the waterproof coats and strong swimming abilities needed to retrieve ducks from the water. The dachshund and poodle mix first appeared around , and their playful natures, small stature, and sometimes-hypoallergenic coats have made them a beloved designer breed. Fun Facts You might sometimes hear doxiepoos called by a different name: "doxiedoodles. Doxiepoos aren't the only popular poodle mixes out there. There's also the adorable Yorkie-poo , shih-poo , Cavapoo , and so many others. For a daily dose of doxiepoo cuteness, follow Nutella , Teddie , and Atlas on Instagram. Was this page helpful? They are delicate, and can display watchdog instincts. They might be quite noisy to share a home with and have some health issues you need to consider. The Doxiepoo is a relatively recent cross, growing in popularity. Twenty years ago this mix would be very rare and hard to find, but today they are more prevalent. To learn more about the background of the Doxiepoo, we need to get to know their parent breeds. The Dachshund originated in Germany and can be traced back at least years. This is due to the fact they were bred specifically to hunt badgers, with their low-to-the-ground bodies and long back proving to be perfect for navigating badger dens. Once introduced into America, this breed found immediate love and popularity among the masses. The Poodle was used as water retrievers. A useful companion to duck hunters because of their incredible swimming ability and intelligence. The Toy Poodle variation was first bred in America in the 20th century, to serve as a city-dwelling companion. Doxiepoo Appearance The first generation Doxiepoo will have short legs. In generations after that they could either have long or short legs, depending on which parent they take after. They are likely to have an elongated body, narrow muzzle and floppy ears. The Dachshund sits on short stout legs, leaving them low to the ground. They have a long body, large floppy ears, and a very keen nose. Their coat can come in three main variations—short and smooth, long, or rough and wiry. The Poodle, on the other hand, stands on much taller legs and is higher up off the ground. They are graceful, elegant dogs with short floppy ears. The coat of the Poodle is iconic. It is curly, dense, and naturally corded. It can either be kept long or regularly clipped to a short trim. They will fall anywhere from 10 to 22 inches and 4 to 32lbs depending on the type of parents used. Coats, Colors, Grooming and Shedding There can be a lot of different coat variations in Doxiepoos, due to the many variations naturally present in the Dachshund. Dachshund dogs have short, long or wirehaired varieties. The Doxiepoo could have a curly, corded coat like the Poodle, or they could take after the characteristics of the Dachshund coat, whichever variation that may be. However, the odds are the your Doxiepoo will have a medium length, wavy coat. Grooming requirements depends on what kind of coat the Doxiepoo has inherited. If your dog takes after the Poodle, it may be fairly high maintenance. Daily thorough brushing will be necessary or clipping the hair to a shorter trim to make it more manageable. On the other hand, if they take after a Dachshund coat, weekly brushing may suffice. Are Doxiepoos Hypoallergenic? The Doxiepoo might be a low shedding dog, if their coat is very curly like their Toy Poodle parents is. However, they produce allergen carrying saliva and dander, like any dog breed. This means that there is always the potential for a dog allergy to be triggered in an allergic owner, regardless of coat type. Doxiepoo Behavior and Temperament The Doxiepoo is a curious, intelligent dog. However, they can be stubborn and independent too. They have a tendency to be wary around people they do not know, which can result in tension or perhaps even aggression towards strangers if they are not socialized properly from a young age. However, they do make good watch dogs because of this. If they take after the Dachshund they may prove to be guarded around strangers. They might have more of a stubborn, independent nature than if they take after the Poodle. The Doxiepoo is likely to be very intelligent due to having two intelligent parent breeds, though how easy to train they are can vary. Doxiepoo Exercise The Doxiepoo should have similar exercise requirements to its parents. Despite their small stature, both the Dachshund and the Poodle are active dogs that require a good amount of daily exercise. A moderate length walk for each dog twice a day suits them nicely. Training Doxiepoo dogs take well to positive, reward-based training. However, the Dachshund sometimes proves to be more of a handful to train than the eager Poodles have a sometimes stubborn and easily distracted nature. Depending on if the Doxiepoo takes after the Dachshund in temperament, you may find them to be more of a challenge to train. It may require a lot of patience. High value rewards and lots of positivity are the way forward. Socialisation is also very important, as the guarded nature of the Dachshund can sometimes present itself in the Doxiepoo as aggression to strangers or other dogs. Designer Dog Health Advocates of pedigree dogs express concerns about the health of these mixed breeds and suggest many of these dogs come from inexperienced greedy breeders hoping to capitalize on a fad. However, a study performed in analyzed over 27 dogs of both purebred and crossbred backgrounds and found that purebred dogs were more at risk of certain genetic disorders. According to another study that took place in , Mixed breeds also seem to live 1. Dachshund and Toy Poodle Health Unfortunately, both parent breeds are known to suffer from some health issues that could present themselves in your Doxiepoo. The Dachshund has a type of dwarfism known as achondroplasia. Intervertebral disc disease is a serious issue that can stem from achondroplasia. In severe cases, this can lead to paralysis. Both the Dachshund and the Poodle are known to suffer from a patellar luxation. This is where the kneecap can slide out of place and become dislocated, causing sudden lameness. Another health risk that is prevalent in both breeds is hip dysplasia. This is where the dogs hip joint does not develop correctly, causing painful arthritis. Poodles are known to suffer from many eye problems. Cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy PRA , lens sclerosis, and corneal degeneration are all potential issues. These conditions can cause vision loss and in severe cases lead to blindness. The Dachshund is also at risk of developing some of these conditions but to a lesser degree. Doxiepoo Health A Doxiepoo can be at risk of these issues, especially for conditions that are prevalent in both breeds such as patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. This may lead to a significantly higher risk of serious issues like intervertebral disc disease. Not allowing them to jump on and off furniture, or run up and down stairs can help reduce damage. It is incredibly important you check the health of the parent breeds before purchasing a Doxiepoo puppy. Feeding Your Doxiepoo Doxiepoos should be fed high-quality dog food. However, caution must be taken to never overfeed them. Are Doxiepoos Good Pets? The Doxiepoo is a friendly and loyal dog and will quickly become attached to members of the family provided they have been raised well. They would do best within a medium-sized family where they are able to fulfill their daily exercise requirements. This is doubly important if the Doxiepoo has inherited the Dachshunds long back and short legs, as the exercise can strengthen their potentially weak back. They are able to get along with other family dogs provided they have been socialized with them since early life.

We are a small kennel, located in the gold country of Northern California, a short drive from beautiful San Francisco and Lake Tahoe. We breed and and raise red standard poodle puppies. Our focus is on health and companionship, with the goal to improve the breed, but also to breed sweet pups with temperaments calm enough and suitable for service and therapy dog certification. Our puppies are born in our home, in their own personal puppy room, which by the way is right off our great room and kitchen, in the heart of our home and we are there for the entire whelping process. When the puppies are old enough, they are exposed to any and all sights, smells and sounds that are needed to properly socialize a puppy. One of our goals is for each and every puppy to meet at least 50 different people before they even go to their forever homes. Plus our research has brought us to the realization that over vaccination and early spay and neuter could be shortening the lives of our beloved canines. Therefore we encourage a minimal vaccine protocol and do not encourage spay and neuter until after our beautiful puppies are fully grown. We hope you enjoy exploring our web pages and drop downs that follow, and as you can tell, we are transparent in every aspect of our raising and socialization of these precious puppies. Through pictures, videos, and our 'closed-private' FB group where we post at least one video each and every day of every litters life here at our poodle plantation , and personal visits you can fully see each and every aspect of our breeding program. Now how many breeders can say that. Before there were no red standard poodles. Yes there were reds in the miniature and toy varieties but not the standard size. In the standards there were Apricots. I feel Janet made the greatest impact on the red standard poodles as we know them today. Following are a few kennels that have made a mark on the red standard poodle. Palmares Kennel. Janet Blannin who was Key in the development of the Red color in the standard poodle size passed away .Although the Palmares name lives on. Shangri-la kennel. Ilse Kong passed away in October of .Majestic kennel. Joan Mistkowski started with Shangri-la reds. She passed away in , her daughter took over the kennel and she too passed away in Minarets poodles. Ester Underkofler still breeds, shows, and titles her poodles in among other things agility and obedience proving that standards are more than pretty faces. Leatherstocking kennel. Barbara and Stratfod Deitch were successful in breeding top show quality standard poodles as well as therapy dogs. At this time there are many breeders trying to breed the ever beautiful deep red standard poodles that are conformationally sound enough to show, sweet enough to be therapy dogs, and smart enough to be hunters. I would like to think that my small kennel will do all that and more. COM bottom of page. Puppies expected Spring , we are very excited to produce quality puppies. Our Story The very first Poodle in my life was in .This was a white boy named "Pierre". After Pierre, there were several Toy Poodle girls in the family over the years to .In , Brian and I married. No kids, but much discussion of bringing a large, silver male Standard Poodle into our family came about. Brian has had Brittanys since and always thought a Standard Poodle would be a great upland game bird hunting partner for his Brittanys. It was very impressive. After alot of research and planning, bringing in our first standard poodle Gi Gi in and the many poodles that have followed, the kennel name, Marquis Diamond came to be. This name came to us as a result of many of our dogs that had "Diamond" in their registered names and the favorite cut in the precious stone for us is the MARQUIS cut. It just worked out that the full name, "Marquis Diamond" for our Standard Poodles was the right fit. Our poodles and brittanys have full access to our home, our grounds and all areas on our property. Our puppies are born in our den on the first floor of our home and for the first 4 - 6 weeks are raised with us in our house and fully interact with us in our everyday lives. By 6 weeks of age, they are ready to move to their puppy play area in our basement which is adjacent to our grooming room. Our outside puppy play area that is set up with astro turf is the next step for them by 7 weeks of age, they go to the outside play area, weather permiting, a few hours each day. We live on 10 fenced acres and when there are no visitors expected, our adult dogs are allowed free access on our grounds, house and play areas. Over the last 13 years, bringing us to early , we have many accomplishments with our dogs that can be reviewed by going thru the various pages on our website. We breed, raise and show standard poodles in various colors such as Silver, White, Blue and Black. We have bred pups in Red and on a small scale, Apricot and Brown as well. Many of our performance accomplishments have been with our puppy families as our event commitment with our dogs has been in the conformation venue. We also hunt upland game with our poodles, along side our brittanys. Our standard poodle foundation was established with the Pinafore linage in the colors Silver, White and Black. Pinafore standard poodles is the hard work and commitment of Penny Harney, established in .Penny now resides in McKenzie TN and is still active in the Standard poodle breed and all things that follow. We maintain a close working relationship with Penny and she remains our mentor and biggest contributor for our current line of standard poodles at Marquis Diamond. Our History Standard Poodles and Brittanys are the breeds of dogs we currently share our lives with at Marquis Diamond. Brian is the Brittany fanatic and his first Brittany was "Countess Suzette". Brian received Susie as a gift from his Uncle Jim after Brian lost his beloved Fox Terrier, Trixie, in due to a tragic hunting accident. Susie lived to be 16 years old and was Brian's hunting partner until she was .Our family's first poodle came to us in December of , and we named him Pierre. Pierre lived to be 12 and was followed by many toy poodles over the years. We have many fond memories of Pierre. Pierre was responsible for the passion we feel for the Poodle that has brought us current to our place in life at Marquis Diamond Standards. May are some of my earlier photos with the first love of my life, Pierre. I was 6 years old, and my Mom took these pictures of me and Pierre. The center picture is of Mom, Grandma, Pierre, and Leroy, the cat in .Pierre was a white miniature poodle, and he travelled all over the country with us and lived a long, healthy, and happy life as our first family dog. It was to be, a new pup. Although I wanted a silver Standard Poodle puppy, I fell in love with this blue girl and that continued my passion for the Standard Poodle. Gi Gi has never had puppies, has done some agility and hunt retrieves, but mostly is my shadow and our mascot at Suzy's Pampered Pet's, greeting all those that come. Gi Gi is our "heart" dog and the love of our lives. She is our best friend. Gi Gi is over 12 years old and still going strong. This is Gi Gi at the Hunt Club. Not sure if she is pointing or going to retrieve? Our 1 goal for our offspring is to strive for good health, even disposition and pray for beauty. We do not feel feeding RAW fits into everyones lifestyle but we strongly recommend reading more about it on our RAW food page to learn our process. Their results are also published and copies of the testing with their performance pictures are prepared and placed in their information file that accompanies them to their forever homes. We respect individuals that are seeking a poodle pup for conformation exhibition purposes and at times, we have offered pups for this venue on private treaty; however, that is not our main goal for our offspring in which we place. We remain available to offer referals to other breeders for a purchase of an AKC conformation show prospect. Our puppies are not placed with breeders soley for reproduction purposes. We strongly believe in the Standard Poodle being the Total Dog and on our Working Dog page and Now Showing page, have many examples of the accomplishments of our standard poodles. This breed can be anything one wishes for them and as such, we can say, standard poodles are the "Total Dog". Training and development of your standard poodle puppy are paramount for acheiving that total dog outcome. We do not offer a prospective companion or performance family something in a puppy which we cannot guarentee. We have been active with the standard poodle breed for many years with our companion dogs, performance prospects and most current, as AKC Breeders of Merit. We do not and CANNOT promise our offspring will be anything more than what we describe them to be at the time we offer our pups for placement. Mother nature is a brutal force to contend with and couple that with all that the elements that are present in a breeding program, there are many factors that are to be considered when meeting a group of puppies that are offered for placement. Our years of experience and continuous ongoing training, research, and trying harder each year we breed our standard poodles, we have created a line of dogs that have brought us great pride, some very impressive titles, and many of our puppy families wonderful, lifetime companionship with their Marquis Diamond Standard Poodle. We have personal and professional references upon request. Please take a moment to look over our website pages and read our information. We are both Service Retired from the State of California completing our career paths. We are now home with our dogs each and every day, rarely leaving together at the same time. Our lifes work is now with our passion for the Standard Poodle and all of them that share our home and our lives. We are able to ship our puppies via commercial airlines, we can accomodate private charter, at times we travel to meet pup families on the road and as always, all are welcome in our home. This is our Boy that started it all for us in the American Kennel Club. We had alot of firsts with our Boulie. Boulie finished in 5 weekends as an AKC champ. It was a proud accomplishment for all of us. Boulie is now retired and our resident SR Champ, doing whatever He wants to do. Performance Poodles of Colour. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments.
