And, by being prepared, I hope any new puppy jitters quickly become new puppy joys. Welcome to my first puppy blog! His expected weight as an adult is between 40 and 50 pounds. Before bringing Henry home I did months of research on puppies. I wanted to make sure I knew as much as possible. I grew-up with a shih-tzu and now my parents have a havenese. My parents used potty pads with both dogs and they were difficult to house train. I researched different breeds, breeders and also considered adoption. However, most of my research was focused on crate and house training. I am not a dog expert and have no education as a dog trainer, but I thought it would be helpful to share what has worked well for us. In our home we created a designated puppy room. For about his first two weeks home he rarely left this room. He has a tiny, weak bladder and is easily confused in his new home. You can create a puppy room or space anywhere in your home, I think it just helps to do-so close by to an exterior door. It is key that this area is very close to the puppy room. Fortunately, he went potty right away on that first day. We gave him lots of verbal praise then took him inside. Each time he comes inside we wipe his paws with a wipe because he does not have all of his vaccine boosters. I have spoke with a few veterinarians on this topic and suggest everyone do the same. Taking Henry outside to go potty was the right choice for us. When Henry entered his room his crate was setup with the door open. Inside we had a crate pad and the towel he sat on in the car during his ride home. I was a bit nervous about the crate situation because neither of my family dogs took a liking to their crate. We let him explore his new room for a bit and before we knew it, he walked into his crate on his own to lay down. From that moment on, he loved his crate! I originally planned to move his crate into our bedroom next to my side of the bed. Since Henry easily went in and out of his crate on his first day home we decided not to move his crate. I totally understand that this is not the case for every pup! When we took Henry home he was about 9lbs and he started with a 24 inch crate. As most sites suggest, he had enough room to turn around, but not enough room to play. Too much extra space in the crate may cause puppies to go potty on one side and sleep on the other. The crate should only be big enough for relaxing — not relaxing AND potty. Tip 4 Stick to a schedule. Day and night. We brought Henry home on a Sunday afternoon and I was able to stay home the following two days. Starting on the first night we set alarms to wake up every two hours to take Henry outside. I know that some sites suggest not waking your puppy up, but this is the method that we chose and it worked very well for Henry. We chose this method because we wanted him to understand that night time is for sleeping and going potty — not playing. By waking him up we felt were inconveniencing him, not the other way around. For the most part, he was always sleeping when we took him out until he woke up for good around 5am. We followed the 2 hour approach for about five days then increased to 3 hours. After about another five days we increased to 4 hours. He has never had an accident in his crate and can hold it for hours at night. Henry eventually started sleeping later util about 6 and am. For the first two weeks, we also wrote down every time Henry ate, drank and went potty. During the first two days, we peed 14 times before dinner. Patience is not my strongest venture. My husband on the other hand, has the patience of a saint. Brining home a puppy is without a doubt stressful and exhausting. The first few weeks are especially tough, but hang in there! I promise it gets better. Your little guy was taken from his mama and siblings then placed in whole new world. It is going to take some time for him to learn, but he will learn. During the first two weeks Henry went nuts for food and water. Here we are 5 weeks out and he plops his little butt down when we bring his food over. The calmer you are, the calmer he will be too. We put peanut butter in the Kong and give it to them in their crates; they love it! Nylabones - These are great when they are really teething, and even our older dogs like to chew on them. We have found the Dinosaur one to be a favorite for both Puppies and Adults! The Just for puppies ring bone dog teething chew toy is also a puppy favorite Chuckit - for playing ball. These are awesome! If you get a medium size, any tennis ball will fit! Just don't let your puppy have the tennis ball to chew on, it will wear down their teeth. Brush The Soft Slicker brush by Safari is great for puppies, as they get older and their coat gets longer the Chris Christianson slicker brush works great! Every now and then, a particularly feisty puppy will become more excited by this disciplinary action and need a more distinct disciplinary measure. This next action needs to be initiated quickly. This will be uncomfortable for your puppy. When behavior meets with uncomfortable consequences, the behavior will stop. With all this being said, the absolute best remedy is for you to arrange daily play dates with other puppies or young dogs. The bottom line is that your puppy needs to have active playtime each day. Jumping — Your puppy will jump on you to get your attention. This may seem innocent while your puppy is small, but Grandma may not appreciate being knocked over by the full grown untrained dog. Make sure you do not reward the puppy for the act of getting down as this will enforce the behavior of jumping up only to be told to get down for a reward. This is not a sign of aggression unless you allow this to go undisciplined over time. You need to actively discourage any and all growling directed at you. If your puppy growls at you when you get close to the food bowl, immediately remove the food bowl and feed the puppy out of your hand. Do not stop brushing until the puppy accepts this without growling. Each puppy needs to learn its place in the pecking order of a family. Obviously, they need to be the lowest on the totem pole. If allowed to be boss, growling is a normal thing for a puppy to exhibit when showing its dominance. Each family member must establish they are boss. This includes young children who are timid or fearful of the puppy. Remember that any behavior you allow as a puppy is then extremely difficult to curb later in life. If you do not wish to have your adult dog on the furniture, do not sit on the sofa holding your puppy. If you do not want your grown dog to grab your pant leg, etc. Leash Training — Training your Goldendoodle puppy to walk on a leash without pulling will take some time. Here is my must-have list for your goldendoodle puppy! We kept Clifton in here at night and when we would leave the house. This one fits perfectly with the crate. We used these to create a safe little area for Clifton once we stopped crate training him to be in. This clips right into the seat belt and on to any harness. This spray helps prevent your dog from chewing on things like your furniture, shoes, etc. You will be using this spray every time there is an accident in the house those first few weeks. We still use this spray 5 years later. Harness : We recently purchased this harness , and we LOVE this one and would recommend this to anyone with a pup as this harness is a little trickier to wiggle out of. Clifton has a medium he weighs about 30 pounds. Collar : We have a bunch of different collars that we switch between, but I love this cognac leather collar for every day. We have this one , and as soon as we switched to this, Clifton walked so much better and stopped pulling. Some of my current favorites are this modern set which is great because it includes a stand. Did You Feed the Dog? I love the smell of it. John Paul Pet Lavender Mint Detangling Spray : Doodles get matted super easily, so we add this detangling spray into our grooming routine to help with the matting. Andis Pet Steel Comb : If you can keep your furbaby mat-free this comb is great for combing him or her out. Safari Dematting Comb : You are going to need a de-matting comb to helpwith matting especially as your puppy gets older. It is the best thing we have bought, and we use it all the time. Start doing this when they are little. We love this little set that includes the toothpaste, brush and finger brush. Towel : We keep two of these pet towels in the bathroom where we give Clifton a bath. They are great at absorbing the water after a bath. We also pack these when we take him to the dog beach or Florida. Mushers Secret Paw Wax : If your pup lives in a cold climate, this is perfect for their dry, cracked paws that will come in winter. Shopping for toys was one of my favorite parts when I first started shopping for Clifton. My advice is not to buy too many toys at first like I did. Your puppy is going to destroy those cute, stuffed animals quickly. Grab a few because they make for some cute photos and toys around the house, but also stock up on things that will help when they need to chew. One thing to keep in mind when getting toys is to avoid any rope toys. Pups can eat the strings and have them wrap around their intestines — which is NOT good. So just skip them altogether. It is supposed to help transition them because it has a battery heartbeat and a pouch to make it warm. If you can, ask the breeder to rub it on his mom or the other puppies so it smells like them. In the first week you've probably already introduced your new little guy to the family, offered a tour around the new digs, made some key introductions with other housemates in their furrever home and maybe even said hello to a neighbor or two…but now what? Many new goldendoodle owners are often unprepared for what comes next and find that the honeymoon period is not always as glamorous as imagined. This is a HUGE transition both for you and for them! Many new owners will buy the best food money can buy or, more commonly, offer the same food the breeder has been using. It is very common for puppies to have a transitional period where eating is suppressed. Different factors can be at play here — homesickness, stress, or even intimidation by other household pets. We encourage you to be patient, supportive and just keep offering food — especially during those down times when things are quiet and pup is feeling settled. Eventually, your little guy will come around! This is the first night your pup has been away from littermates so he or she may spend a lot of time whining in the crate spare a tear for sibling bonding. This can last for several nights, but usually decreases with each passing night. At JLDD, we start all pups on crate training by the time they are just two weeks old. At JLDD we introduce a potty area at around three weeks old and encourage the pups to use puppy pads throughout their time with us. The smaller the area, the more likely your pup will be to use the puppy pad. In fact, confining them to just a room or two of your house at first is often a good idea in general to make things less overwhelming for them. Bonus points if your predesignated area is within direct eyeline to the outside door…that way your little guy can quickly get familiar with the way outside. Be prepared…young pups have to pee A LOT! This aspect of owning a new pup takes time and is sometimes a 2-steps forward, 1-step back process.At night, you can expect your pup to be able to go around hours at first without needing to potty…some of our bigger pups can go 8 hours from night one, but it just depends on the pup. Most will need a potty break at some point in the middle of the night for the first couple weeks—it can be tough, but fortunately they are usually able to stretch it out pretty quickly. To review, when raising a goldendoodle puppy, the best tools you can have in your belt are patience, a good sense of humor and consistency. Puppies thrive on schedules and predictable expectations, and lots of snuggles and chew toys! Doodles are very smart and learn fast, so you should see marked improved by the week, meaning that each progressive week is generally easier than the last. Avoid These When Your Frencie Is Constipated There is indeed a lot of misleading advice online regarding natural treatments for dog consti p ation. It is important to remember that you must always speak to your veterinarian before offering any remedy to your Frenchie. Enemas: Enemas must only be delivered by a veterinarian and therefore should not be given at home. The chance of harm or even contamination is significant, so professionals need to manage this procedure. Milk: Since so many dogs are lactose-intolerant, certain people say that dairy is a successful home cure for constipation by functioning as a laxative. Even milk can lead to diarrhea and is not recommended, as it can cause more health issues on its own. Laxatives: Your vet should be the only person to prescribe laxatives or stool softeners. If the constipation of your Frenchie is not resolved, then obstipation — the inability to expel the colon on their own may happen. In this situation, the bowel becomes filled with an unbearably large volume of feces. In the fruit category along with pumpkin , you can give him peaches, pears, and apples. Among vegetables, broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, carrots, and Kale will do the trick. Some dogs will launch into these edibles without fuss. Munch, however, likes his ground up. Add about 1 Tbs to his regular food per 25 pounds of weight. Since French Bulldogs rarely weigh over 28 pounds, one 1 Tbs daily is fine. Olive oil is a natural stool softener that works fairly quickly. Coconut oil soothes the digestive tract, having anti-inflammatory properties. Daily is the recommended dose for small dogs. Massaging A Constipated French Bulldog There are different approaches to massaging your Frenchie to help with constipation. Sit on the floor with Cookie laying on her back in your lap. Using small circular motions, massage the lower abdomen in both directions clockwise and counterclockwise for five minutes each. You can use the other hand on her chest for reassurance. Also, speak soft words of encouragement. Next use larger circular motions, again 5 minutes in each direction. Make sure to use a flat palm, not your fingers. Place her on her side. Apply pressure with both of your hands at the neckline, slowly stroking toward the tail. Repeat 20 times. Stop, and gently move them to the other side. This relaxes some of the muscles she uses to poop. You can alternatively use the stroking method when she is sitting. This time, place one hand on each side of her body at her neckline. As before, move slowly down to her tail. You can give your French Bulldog a laxative, but only one prescribed by your vet. This applies to stool softeners too. Never give human laxatives to your pooch. Minimally Much should poop once a day, but he may go as many as five times daily. The ones who poop more eat small, regular meals. When constipation goes unchecked it can become serious. Their bowel fills and fills with a large amount of feces. In turn, munch will seem lazy, vomit, refuse food, and continue straining without production. If it has been more than two days since Munch and Cookie took a healthy poop , call your vet and make an appointment. But, many more dogs are sent to shelters every year because of behavior problems that people can't seem to get under control. I've seen my fair share, having been training dogs to behave since .I have noticed that most people are very quick to blame the owner and circumstance for a dogs behavior and not the dogs predisposition to certain behavioral proclivities that don't mesh well in our society. Understanding the breed you buy is something some buyers do and some don't we can't police them, however, understanding and explaining the breed you breed is something breeders MUST both desirable and undesirable traits alike, this is of the utmost importance. I breed dogs using a simple motto, which is stated on the home page, "THIS is what we breed for," "THIS" standing for t emperament, health, intelligence and structure. I thought an acronym would resonate with people and perhaps become a motto for breeders all over. The breeding community, in this "show and tell" age of dogs has shifted, dangerously, I might add, to breeding dogs to a standard for looks instead of temperament. Most dogs shown don't have working titles and aren't required to obtain them to win show titles, like "Best in Show" and "Best in Breed. A lab that doesn't retrieve doesn't make for much of a Lab does it? But, for so many dogs a test of temperament is not placed as high as, how the dog looks, or the opinion of a judge. This is a dog world sin! If you disregard temperament for certain physical qualities 'qualities' is a strong word, because it implies some worth or usefulness or even put it second to physical qualities, you're are doing a disservice to dog owners but moreover you are doing a disservice to the dogs of that breed and that breed itself. You are creating an animal that is far removed from its genetic strengths and lowering their worth to an assessment of beauty, based on loose temperamental guidelines and a few judges opinions on its appearance and movement. In addition, to all that is above, some breeders and trainers have realized that titling a dog is a sure way to sell puppies. And it proves quite effective. But, while some titles and trails prove a dogs worth in certain aspects of life and competition, buyers do not get to see the process. There are more great trainers in the world now, than ever before. We have vast knowledge about the canine brain and techniques to get dogs to work in certain venues. But, it is a trainers job to cover up "holes" in the dogs genetic temperament for sake of passing tests and winning trails. Just because a dog is titled doesn't mean it is breed quality and the converse is also true. And just to pile it on, many great trainers can train terrible dogs to impressive titles. If those dogs are to be bred and produce puppies, the pups don't come out with the knowledge taught to the parents by the trainer s. They come out with only the genetic baseline for temperament. Which, includes all the holes the trainer covered up. Breeding temperamentally sound dogs is paramount to great breeding practices and keeps dogs from being placed in shelters and put down. The other part to keeping the shelter population down is how I do business with people and the dogs I breed and sell. My dogs, as stated in my contract, can NOT: Be bred, surrendered to a shelter, put down, contested over in a divorce or separation or change hands without either the dog becoming my property or given express written permission by me to do anything listed previous. This makes it harder for them to breathe, and you should be careful on hot days as they cannot pant as well to cool themselves down. Mobility issues — French Bulldogs are more likely to have neck or back issues as they are bred with short legs, meaning they may get back pain or a slipped disc. With all of these tips taken into account, you should know everything you need to take care of newborn French Bulldog puppies, and be ready to welcome your new four-legged friend into your home. Dehydration can either be a result of inadequate nourishment, too much heat, or sickness. It is strongly suggested that you use regular newborn or infant bottles and nipples. The ones available for purchase for cats, dogs, ferrets, etc. Bottle feeding is far more preferable. The sucking on a nipple, the handling and holding of the French Bulldog puppy is so very important to their overall development. There are lots of little ways to accomplish it. Priority should be to get the Frenchie puppy warmed up slowly. Newborn French Bulldog puppies cannot regulate their body temperature or body functions like urinating and stools. It is important that they are pottied at each feeding. They might not have a stool each time, but they will urinate. This is what the mother does when she licks them. After that, she will become a good mommy. Some might start off being good, then after a few days, or even a couple of weeks, not want to be bothered and might even be nasty to the puppies such as snapping and biting them. Always be careful and watch. If the mother will not clean the babies, you must be sure to do it. Using a kleenex, gently rub the area to stimulate their potty. Then be sure to clean them well. Rub gently underneath to make them urinate, and behind to make them defecate. This should be done following each feeding. Keeping the digestive tract functioning involves the simple rule: put something in, something comes out. If the elimination of waste stops, the puppy will cease feeding, and will quickly start to waste away. If the puppy becomes chilled, the digestive tract almost always shuts down. She displayed admirable maternal instinct and licked away the foetal membranes from all the puppies enabling them to breathe and stimulated them by licking their faces and bodies until the pups let out their first cries. The puppies were cleaned and stimulated further by rubbing gently with sterile absorbant cotton. Unlike most other breeds of dogs, Paris readily allowed us to handle and care for her pups, trusting us completely to keep them safe. On the first two nights, the puppies were allowed to remain with the mother however; we lost another pup as a result of crushing injury inflicted due to her lack of experience. It was then decided to undertake human intervention so as to ensure the safety of the remaining 7 puppies and avoid such accidents in the future. On the 4th night however, the mother managed to get into the basket housing her puppies, reached in with her mouth and carried out one puppy then took her to her bed. The puppy was licked thoroughly by the mother and was only discovered approximately 4 hours after the incident. By then the puppy was hypothermic and dehydrated. Due to severe dehydration and subsequent hypoglycaemia, she was very weak, unable to suckle milk and twitched in frequent intervals. Intensive care was initiated immediately and the puppy was separated from the rest, kept constantly warm at 39 degrees Celsius, fed artificial milk in intervals of 1 hour. However, not much improvement could be observed. After repeating the procedure thrice, she visibly regained strength and began suckling on the finger showing intent. I continued to feed her the milk replacer at 1 hour intervals and 0.
