Puppy Pad Potty Training Potty training with puppy pads involves covering the floor of the area that your puppy has access to with pads. The floor you need to choose must be easy to clean for this method, like wooden or linoleum. So a kitchen is usually ideal. Then, when your puppy is reliably toileting in this smaller area, you just pop a couple of pads outside the back door. Finally, you will remove them altogether. You must remove the pads gradually for the same reason that you must start off by covering your entire kitchen floor. To reduce the risk of your puppy having an accident on your floor itself! To him, the floor might seem just as suitable as a puppy pad. So, covering the entire floor at first will remove the risk of any accidents on your floor. Combining Crates and Puppy Pads The crate training puppy method requires getting up at 2am for at least a few days, as you will need to continue to offer regular potty breaks through the night. Many puppy parents find this understandably tough. It also means that you can barely remove your attention from the puppy at all during the day for the first few weeks. But, puppy parents are often human parents too. And, you may need to pop out of the house for a few minutes a couple of times a day as a minimum. A great way to deal with these situations is to set up your crate inside a puppy playpen. During the night and when you need to briefly pop out during the day, you leave the crate door open and line the puppy play pen with puppy pads. This means they can relieve themselves if they need to, without risking messing in their bed or on your floor. These timings are not set in stone, but are a good starting point for each stage. Some owners will find that they need to offer a pee break as often as every 20 minutes. Using potty pads only teaches your puppy that going potty on absorbent material is Ok. Not a great idea. Try to avoid accidents at all costs. This way, you will teach your dog to go to the bathroom on command. This can be very convenient if you are traveling or leaving the house. Stay away from the puppy until they are done with their business, keep other animals, children and any other distraction away from them. If you stop her from eating, she might dig on your couch or on her bedding. It will be lower than .Stage Two This is the main birthing process of your pug. The average period for a pug giving birth is 24 hours. There is thirty minutes to an hour gap between each pup coming out from the birth canal. This gives enough time for the mom to wipe clean her newborn puppies. Stage Three This is the last process when your pug gives birth to her new puppies. The placenta will also come out during this stage. What happens to your pregnant pug every week until giving birth? Pug breeding is not as easy as you think. How long are Pugs pregnant for? Like most dogs, Pugs are typically pregnant for between 53 to 63 days on average, although this can vary depending on the size of the Pug and her general health. However, it is important that you keep an eye on your Pug once she starts heading into the final week of the pregnancy for signs of imminent labour, including nesting behaviour. Puppies are usually fully formed at around day 58, meaning that labour can happen at any time. Labour in dogs occurs in three separate stages: Stage one: The uterus begins to contract, but there will be no outward sign of this. The mother will be restless, may lose her appetite as well as vomiting and panting. This lasts between 12 and 24 hours. Stage two: Lasting up to 24 hours, this is when the puppies will begin to be born. Typically, dogs give birth to a puppy between half an hour and an hour at a time, giving you and your dog enough time to clean the puppy, ensure its healthy and stimulate it to wake up and start moving. Stage three: Usually occurs around the same time as stage two, this is when the placenta appears. The placenta itself will be delivered shortly after the end of stage two, when all of the puppies have been born. How do you help your Pug give birth? Once this has occurred, labour will begin within the next 12 to 24 hours. If you have decided for a caesarean section or a vet hospital birth, this is when you should take your Pug to the veterinary surgery. However, if you have decided to help your dog give birth at home then you need to make sure that you have a whelping box prepared, as well as clean towels, heating pads, blankets and emergency medical supplies recommended by your vet such as gloves, sterile scissors and antiseptic solutions. If your Pug is showing signs of labour, including a greyish sack dropping from the vuvla, but no puppy emerges within the next hour then it is recommended that you call your vet who will be able to advise you. Also, if your Pug is showing contractions for more than two hours without any puppies being born, call your vet immediately. Normally your dog will chew through this herself, but if not then you will have to do so yourself with a pair of sterilised scissors. Cut or rather crush to reduce bleeding the cord around an inch above the belly of the puppy and tie off the end with dental floss and dip the end in an antiseptic solution. After each Pug puppy emerges the placenta will also be discarded, around fifteen minutes after the birth. This can be immediately discarded, although your dog may try and eat it. Once a Pug puppy is born and is breathing, place them in either the whelping box or in a lined laundry basket along with blankets and a heating pad. Once all the puppies have been born and you are sure that the labour is over, take your dog outside to urinate especially if the labour has taken several hours before returning to the whelping box and allowing her to start nursing her pups. Again, your vet will be able to offer advise over the phone if you are concerned about any of the puppies. Conclusion Pugs make for amazing pets, however due to their popularity increasing there as been a surge in unscrupulous breeders who use irresponsible practices. There is a reason that the AKC will not allow these dogs to represent the French Bulldog breed, so beware of those breeders as well. We require all of our new puppy families to pick up their puppy from us and either drive them to their forever home or they can be flown in the cabin with their owner, but they NEVER will go via cargo. We also will not sell to families outside of the US for the protection of our bloodlines. I only breed show quality dogs that have gone through rigorous genetic and health testings. I also study pedigree to make sure the Dam and Sire have compatible bloodlines prior to planning a litter. Since puppies develop and change drastically, it is for that reason that Frenchie Show breeders will hold a litter for at least weeks or longer prior to making their Show picks. My other advice is do NOT get puppy fever and just buy any dog you see on those online advertisements, newspaper ads, puppy find, pet stores etc. You could end up with a lifetime of problems just because one was immediately available. I waited 3 long years before I got my first Frenchie, but I had to be patient and be willing to say NO to a lot of puppies that I saw. Unfortunately this question can not be answered with a simple yes or no. The length of the muzzle of a French Bulldog is purely for esthetic purposes. The length of the muzzle is largely determined by supply and demand. Breeders usually only breed the type that the buyer is looking for. In the end they all would like to give their puppies a new home. But when a dog because of this physical appearance has a higher rate in abnormalities, it must be absolutely clear for all dog lovers that this can not be the goal. A short muzle on its own is not the cause of breathing difficulties. The origin of breathing problems starts deeper in the throat, not visible from the outside. Even muzzle length or size of the nostrils is not always conclusive. Nevertheless the selection must be made towards more open nostrils and a clear stated muzzle from a side angle of view, because it certainly has a relation to the rest of the abnormalities. When a CT scan is made of a French Bulldog, we can see that the amount of tissue in mouth and nose area is the same of that in a dog with a muzzle that is of normal length! All this tissue is compressed like an accordion, it has to go somewhere in the end… This results in a palate that is too long, teeth and jaws that are not adjusted properly to the short skull shape. The first symptom of trouble is making sound when breathing. Unfortunately that does not automatically mean that dogs with silent breathing can have no breathing difficulties. Some breeders tried to breed the slanting nose back to a distinct nose length and wide open nostrils. They immediately noticed the difference! Researchers encountered that when the muzzle length became shorter, the risk of BOAS became significantly larger. BOAS was only seen in dogs with a muzzle length wich was less than half of the length of the skull. Obesity and a thick, short neck also were factors in enlarging breathing difficulties. How long or short should the muzzle be? Anatomy plays a great role in this, it is important for other organs to fulle develop. In a short neck organs are compressed, which results in a shorter trachea. The neck takes care of balance in the head. The neck can only function properly when it is free in movement. It is common for French Bulldogs that they are not flexible at all, the neck can barely move. Head and neck almost become one. This dogs can not move freely, wich is obviously a burden. Breeders must ensure a fully opened trachea and a normal esophagus, sufficient widht in the throat cavities and in the larynx. The palate must be free of excrescent soft tissue. The tongue must not be too long and thick, and the nostrils must be open without tapering on the inside. Just looking at muzzle length does not mean the rest of the elements are correct. It is obvious that a snubbed nose with narrow nostrils and a short, wide neck should be avoided as much as possible. It is a difficult topic. It can be confusing, but it is definitely much debated. He has been aware of where you are and would stay pretty close. During this period that same cute little puppy will decide that he is ready to go solo and take off running quicker than lightening. During this time, teaching the puppy that he must stay close by or come when called is critical. The failure to do this will result in a dog that will not be reliable to come or to stay close by as an adult and very well could lead the dog into a life or death situation. What is going on at this stage of puppy development: The puppy will become more independent. A puppy that previously would never go very far, will venture off. The Puppy will ignore commands to stay close or come. How you handle refusal to come or stay will affect future reliability off leash. Puppy will be clever in attempts to run around loose. Never allow dog loose in an unconfined area. Yes this is redundant to the above, so it must be pretty important for us to say it twice. Being off leash outside of a confined area is reserved for who have been well trained. Enroll in a training class that utilizes positive training techniques. Make coming a very positive experience. Oh… and never allow your puppy to be off leash in an unconfined area. This often is a time when many families start to worry that maybe they made a bad decision in getting a dog. Remember: you get what you put into it. You take the time right now to teach good habits, you will have the dog you always dreamed of for many years. This work will payoff. What is going on at this stage of puppy development: The puppy will become a free and independent thinker. The puppy will continue to review the pack order. The puppy will be very energetic. The puppy will be exuberant and enthusiastic. They turn into clowns with teeth. They will delight in learning new and fun things. What you can do: Appreciate the humor of it all. Reaffirm the family pack order. Be realistic about expectations still very much a puppy in a big boy body Channel all that energy into positive learning experiences. Continue with training classes; explore options for additional training opportunities. This is normal, but you must help your dog figure out how to deal with his fears or concerns. It will also reduce the chances that the things he fears will not be permanently imprinted for life. What is going on at this stage of puppy development: The puppy that was so confident will suddenly become reluctant to new things. This period can be subtle. This period can come and go several times over this entire period. It may appear to be unprovoked or unrelated to any specific occurrence. Puppy can become frustrating to owners. You may notice this behavior more in males. What you can do: Avoid extremes in your response no anger or forcing or over comforting Be patient and understanding. We aware of surrounding and potential triggers. Work on desensitizing him with gradual introductions with rewards. Praise with grand rewards for his attempts. Your dog will take his clues from you, if you act frightened or concerned he will too. He will begin to fill out a bit and develop more muscle tone. But, mentally, the dog is still working out some last details of his life and what it means to him. He IS a member of a pack and now begins to find that his turf is worthy of monitoring and protecting. You do not want you dog to take over these responsibilities because in no time you too will be under the rule of the King Dog. Which can lead to aggressive behaviors, protective to the point of creating fear or actually harming someone or another animal as he protects. This is bad news, and often a reason a dog is taken out of the home or destroyed. What is going on: The dog may become more turf protective. Strangers may be greeted with barking. Barking at noises, birds, cars, butterflies, pretty much everything he believe worthy of attention. Playing with other dogs may escalate to fighting. Same sex confrontations of other dogs can occur. Once again, checking the pack order to see if he can move up. What you can do: Reinforce how to greet strangers into your home. Teach your dog to ignore dogs he cannot be nice to. Practice or reinforce dog manners utilizing no threatening dogs Learn to read your dog and other dogs. Circling, walking on toes, stiff tail wags, tense facial expressions — are the signs of aggressive behaviors Rally your family to review that the pack order is clear and very one is consistent with training and corrections. When your puppy is months, be aware that your puppy has needs for stimulation, companionship, and activity. They get bored quickly and never seem to be inactive. These moments will come and go, and fears and likes will change. Your teenage Labradoodle will love going for walks. Keep them on a leash and train them well.
