She was rescued from a high kill shelter, so that is partially why there is little info about her. But they do know that she is super sweet and gets along with the dogs and kids she has met at the shelter. It is not known if she has ever met a cat. Dora knows a few commands and walks well on a leash. But it is unknown if she is house trained, or crate trained. Therefore, it would be best to provide a refresher course. Before she can begin to spend time in a crate, she will need to have an established bathroom routine always after eating, playing, sleeping, and before bedtime. She will also need plenty of exercise and lots of attention. Having established a bathroom routine, been given lots of attention and exercise, Dora will be ready to be introduced to her new crate which must be a cozy, warm, and positive place. In the beginning she will explore it and use it for short periods of time. Eventually, the time can be increased based on her comfortableness with this second home. She may be able to handle up to 4 hours over time. Daily walks and hikes will be a good opportunity to reinforce leash skills as well as socialization skills. It will be a new world to her with all the new sights, smells, sounds, and people along her walk. She will also appreciate free time in a secure back yard or maybe at a local dog park. Keeping her mind active with activities that provide physical and mental stimulation will prevent boredom. Beware of Bernedoodle Adoption Scams Always do your research and thoroughly investigate any Bernedoodle adoption organization before accepting a puppy or offering payment of any kind. There are two main red flags you want to lookout for when searching for a Bernedoodle to adopt…scammers and deceptive marketing from breeders. Scammers will attempt to act as a rescue organization or charity while asking you for donations, adoption fees, or application fees. In addition to outright scammers there are breeders who attempt to be deceptive with their marketing to confuse and trick people into thinking they are rescuing a Bernedoodle puppy rather than buying one. What is the Process of Rescuing a Bernedoodle? Usually their adoption process is laid out in detail on their website. Some rescues have you submit a general application that they review each time a new Bernedoodles arrives at their shelter. Other rescues ask you to keep an eye on their website, Facebook, or Petfinder profile to be alerted when new Bernedoodles are in need of a home. At that point you would then apply. One thing that all good rescues have in common is that their application process is fairly extensive and in-depth. This helps increase the odds that the rescue Bernedoodles will only have to go through this stressful experience once. Some steps that may be involved are background checks, calling personal references, calling veterinarian and groomer references, a phone interview, and a home visit. Should You Adopt a Bernedoodle? This is why the application process is extremely important to ensure a successful experience for both dog and owner. You save money on puppy vaccinations and spaying or neutering. All rescue Bernedoodles will come with these veterinary appointments taken care of already. While this helps avoid as many upsetting surprises, you can never be too prepared for the large veterinary expenses that come with accidents and illnesses. Cons Due to their personality and history, many rescue dogs have specific adoption requirements like a fenced back yard, no children, no cats, or a multi-dog house. It may take longer for you to find the right dog for your family and the process is a lot more work. The family went through personal problems or issues leading to their incapability to take care of the dog. The primary owner might have died and no family members want to take the dog in. The owners no longer want to put in the effort for their grooming needs. Their financial situation may have forced them to let go of their pooch as they can no longer shoulder its expenses. To provide you with a reference, provided below is a breakdown of where the Bernedoodle adoption fee goes: Expenses. You see, the Bernedoodle is an amazing dog. Adopting a dog is a wonderful thing to do. There is no doubt that the idea of saving the life of a dog and giving them a second chance leads to a special bond between the two of you. Also, the love you will receive in return from this dog is also going to be something rather special. Why a Rescue Dog? As we said earlier, you are providing the dog with another opportunity to have a life. These dogs that are rescued are all wanting to enjoy the feeling of being loved, and to give that love back in return. But here is an important point. A puppy is a lot more work. You need to train them and care for them more than you would do with an adult dog as they already understand life and do their own thing. Adopting an adult dog is also less stressful when compared to training a puppy. Do you have the time to dedicate to training a puppy? If not, then adopting an adult dog from a rescue organization is certainly the better way to go about things. The key here is just accepting that the rescue dog will want to give out a whole lot of love to you. That in itself is a good reason to adopt. Why a Bernedoodle? The truth is that we do have a multitude of reasons as to why adopting a Bernedoodle is such a good idea. One of the key things is in how they are as a dog. They are pretty chilled and laid-back. They have a great temperament, and that marks them out as being perfect for a family. You will also have no problem in having them around children. The Bernedoodle can be full of life and energy at times, but they just want to love you and to be loved back. In a short period of time, they will become part of the family. Also, your Bernedoodle is the type of dog that loves to learn things. They will enjoy spending time with you when it comes to learning new tricks, and they always want to make you feel happy with them. This is all very positive, but that causes its own problems. A Bernedoodle may not always appear in the list of dogs available for adoption from rescue organizations. That means you must be patient. In addition, you may want to contact a number of organizations. In doing so, you will increase your chances of being able to successfully adopt one. But then, you do need to know where to look in New Jersey when it comes to adopting a Bernedoodle, so that is where we will help. Oodles of Doodles Rescue Based in Jackson, Oodles of Doodles Rescue is a non-profit organization that specializes in helping people to adopt different dogs that all fall under the Doodles breed. Of course, that means they will have a number of Bernedoodle dogs available throughout the year, so they are an excellent resource. This organization tends to use foster parents, and that is how you will often end up meeting your new Bernedoodle. However, you do need to go through their adoption process first, and that is something that does take some time. As is common with adopting a rescue dog, they will make sure you are the perfect fit for the dog. Keep in mind that looking after the dog is their primary concern. If they do not believe you are the right fit, then you will be required to wait until another Bernedoodle comes along. In the meantime, complete their application process and then get ready to meet your new dog. For instance, you can expect the adoption fee for a Mini Bernedoodle rescue dog to be slightly higher than Standard-sized dogs. In addition, younger puppies tend to be more expensive than adult and senior dogs. Most Bernedoodles live between 12 to 18 years without major health complications, so you can expect them to be a significant part of your life for several years. It Can Take Time for Your Bernedoodle to Get Along with Your Other Pets Bernedoodles for adoption might have an unknown background, so it might be difficult to tell if they can get along with other dogs, cats, or other pets in their new homes. Before applying to adopt a dog, be sure to ask the rescue if the dog is good around other animals. If your new dog is good around other pets, consider introducing them to each other in neutral territory. Keep their interactions brief, but gradually increase their time together and reward your pets if they express positive reactions to each other. This process can take longer for some dogs, so you should remain patient and monitor them whenever possible. Yearly and monthly pet budgets can differ from owner to owner, but you can expect to spend thousands of dollars a year to keep your Bernedoodle happy and healthy. However, the organization sees hundreds of volunteer workers dedicating their time at the shelter. Why Should You Adopt from a Rescue? There are many wonderful reasons new owners should adopt a Bernedoodle from a rescue. Statistics show that every year, an estimated 1 million dogs get euthanized. The number of dogs euthanized drops significantly when people adopt from rescues and shelters rather than puppy mills. The National Humane Education Society explains that puppy mills are factory-style breeding facilities that substantially harm puppies and dogs. The conditions are notoriously bad and the mills do not provide proper healthcare. This leads to ill puppies and dogs that often have issues with behavior. Puppies in mills come from adult female dogs that live in cages and spend their lives breeding without a home. When a dog gets too old and can no longer breed, puppy mills will kill or abandon the dog. Benefits for You When you adopt from a rescue, you will receive a Bernedoodle that has been well-taken care of and usually already trained. In addition, adopting from a rescue is usually much cheaper than other options. They also are wonderful, lifelong sources of dog owner tips and information. More often than not, dogs that are adopted from rescues have already had their vaccines, have been fixed, and are overall healthier because they receive adequate care. For you, this means less work and trips to the vet. You can also remind others of your good deed when discussing your dog with your friends! You must know if you will be able to handle the responsibilities associated with taking care of an animal. Consider the following areas and tips while researching Bernedoodle rescues. Know the Bernedoodle Breed Needs Every dog breed manifests different personalities and needs. When it comes to Bernedoodles, they need a lot of food, exercise, and grooming. Keep in mind that their size ranges from 40 to 90 pounds, and their height ranges inches. Most Bernedoodles will not shed that much because of their breed mix. However, they will still need to be brushed several times a week to maintain a healthy-looking coat. Their nails will need trimming once every 3 to 4 weeks. Bernedoodles do well with children and active young families. They also live decently long for a dog with an average life span of years. These dogs can be incredibly energetic and need an owner willing to be active with them. When young, Bernedoodles can be boisterous, playful, and sometimes headstrong. Relatively easy to train, the Bernedoodle does well with an owner willing to keep up with them. Usually, Bernedoodles will be quite eager to please during training. Remove all wires, shoes, and anything that your puppy may damage, chew, or that risk injury. Regardless of age, make sure that you have a collar, leash, bed, food, water, and everything necessary to make sure your dog is comfortable. Do not forget to give your puppy some new toys as a welcome home gift, and start training your Bernedoodle from day one. Do your research on each type of food before giving it to your dog. Each dog food type comes with health risks and benefits. Kibble, also called dry dog food, is the least expensive and easiest to store. Canned food is wet food and easy to store since it has a long shelf life. However, wet food is expensive and does not provide many health benefits for your dog. If you want to give your Bernedoodle dog food, make sure that you check the nutritional label to see how balanced the food is. Sometimes, canned dog food holds too much water or proteins that may not be healthy for your pup. Semi-moist foods unfortunately have a lot of preservatives, colorings, and flavors that are not healthy for your puppy. Most dogs enjoy this food type on special occasions. Food prepared by owners usually offers the most nutritional value. As always, talk to your vet about the best diet for your dog. Be Aware of Separation Anxiety Dogs and puppies are like children and need lots of attention. However, they need to be able to handle themselves on their own. At the same time, all dogs deserve an owner who does not leave them constantly. When dogs have separation anxiety, behavioral problems form. They may chew, whine, or urinate inside your home. At first, every dog will have some separation anxiety, and Bernedoodles as a breed are particularly prone to developing separation anxiety when left alone for long periods. To combat and prevent separation anxiety in your Bernedoodle, start by talking to your dog in a soft voice while leaving or returning. Then, establish a routine or action that you do every time you leave that lets your dog know that you will be back home shortly. Many other techniques for addressing separation anxiety in dogs exist that you can investigate. The vet will be able to prescribe medication for your dog that can ease anxiety. You should also discuss heartworm tests and other tests that your pup may need depending on the age and breed. When you visit the veterinarian, make sure to ask them about any other treatments or tests that may be recommended for your pup. Your vet can also give you advice about the best diet for your French Bulldog and the type of food that should be fed. If your pup is having difficulty understanding certain commands, go back and break them down into smaller parts. There are lots of dog trainers out there who can provide guidance and advice on how to get your pup to understand commands. Introduction Are you considering buying a French Bulldog in the Philippines? These lovable and popular pups can come with a hefty price tag, but understanding factors that affect the cost and where to find a reputable breeder can help you get the pup of your dreams without breaking the bank. Read on for all the scoop! What is a French Bulldog? A French Bulldog is a small, stocky and playful breed of dogs that originated in France. They have short legs and big bat-like ears, and are usually brown, black or white in color. Frenchies are incredibly loyal and affectionate, and make great family pets. They are also very adaptable and can live in almost any environment, whether it be an apartment or a house. French Bulldogs are relatively low-maintenance and are generally healthy dogs, although they do require regular grooming and exercise. French Bulldogs are also fairly easy to train and tend to be very social, so they make great additions to any family. They may require a bit more attention than other breeds, but given the right amount of love and care, a Frenchie can be a wonderful pet for years to come. French Bulldogs have become increasingly popular in recent years, and as demand for these furry friends has grown, so too has their price tag. French Bulldogs can cost anywhere from a couple of thousand to several thousand dollars, depending on their age, quality, and other factors. One of the main reasons why these dogs cost so much is that they are extremely in-demand, meaning that breeders are able to set higher prices for them. Breeding French Bulldogs can be quite expensive and labor-intensive, and as a result, breeders need to factor this cost into their price for the pup. Aside from the cost of the actual pup, there are other things to consider when buying a French Bulldog. Potential owners should budget for vet bills, grooming, food, and other supplies such as toys and treats. All in all, buying a French Bulldog can be an expensive endeavor. With the right research and dedication, potential owners can find the pup of their dreams while staying within their budget. Factors like pedigree, age, and any special needs the pup might have can affect the cost. The most important factor is the breed or lineage of the dog. French Bulldogs with a higher pedigree or lineage will cost more. Other factors that can affect the cost include age, size, health, temperament, and color. A puppy will cost more than an adult dog, and different colors can also affect the price. Size can also affect the price. The bigger the dog, the more it will cost. Average Prices for French Bulldogs in the Philippines When shopping for a French Bulldog in the Philippines, you want to make sure that the cost is something you can realistically afford. Prices can vary depending on the breed, age, and other factors. Puppies tend to be more expensive, while older French Bulldogs can be found for cheaper. You should also keep in mind that there may be additional costs associated with owning a French Bulldog — such as veterinary bills, food, and grooming. Do your research to find a reputable breeder and make sure to ask lots of questions. The best way to find a French Bulldog in the Philippines is to look for a reputable breeder. You can also look for classified ads or visit pet shops or kennels. Other Important Costs to Consider When considering the cost of a French Bulldog in the Philippines, there are several other expenses to factor in. Plan on budgeting for pet insurance as well. This can help cover unexpected medical needs and keep your furry companion in good health. These can help your pup get used to their new home, help them learn basic commands, and help you become a better pet parent. Training and socialization classes are essential for all dogs, especially those with a strong-willed personality, such as French Bulldogs. Investing in these classes can help you have a happy and healthy pup for years to come. Where to Buy a French Bulldog in the Philippines When considering where to purchase a French Bulldog in the Philippines, the first thing to do is research the breeders and their reputations. Look for breeders who are knowledgeable about the breed and have a good track record. It is important to visit the breeder before purchasing the puppy, to ensure that the environment is clean, safe and suitable for the French Bulldog. The next step is to check the health of the puppy. Ask the breeder for vaccination and deworming records and make sure the puppy is healthy and fit. Ask for a written contract from the breeder. Be sure to read all documents carefully and make sure all promises are recorded in writing before paying for the French Bulldog. What to Look for in a Breeder When selecting a breeder for your French Bulldog, it is important to ensure you pick one with a good reputation for health and quality. Look for one that is open about the health and pedigree of their puppies, and has references from past customers. Ask for documents like pedigree certificates, and meet the breeder in person to get a good feel for the way they keep their puppies. When visiting the breeder, check the environment where the puppies are kept and inspect their general health. PCCI , and adheres to their code of ethics. Reputable breeders will know how to answer your questions, and will always be more than happy to provide you with all the information you need. Any breeder worth their salt will be willing to provide a money-back guarantee. A good breeder should offer support and assistance if you have any problems or questions relating to your puppy. Ask around for recommendations from fellow French Bulldog owners, and read online reviews. Ask about their experience and knowledge, the health and genetics of their French Bulldog puppies, and their breeding practices. Be sure to meet the puppies and their parent before making a final decision. Finding a reputable breeder is a key step in ensuring you get a healthy, happy pup. Be sure to take your time and do your due diligence to make sure you have the best shot of finding the perfect French Bulldog for you. Good luck! Conclusion When buying a French Bulldog in the Philippines, research is key. If possible, visit the breeder and meet the pup in person. These costs can add up quickly, so make sure you are prepared to cover them. Consider the cost of food, toys, bedding, and any additional supplies you may need. By driftwoodgoldens 1 Comment History of Driftwood Goldens: In , Sherry Thomas Linker, purchased a male Golden from a top kennel Malagold Kennels that was known for their strong health background, and beautiful heads. Many people requested to use Charmer as a stud because of his impressive accomplishments and outstanding looks. Charmer and Flirt produced beautiful puppies together and to this day the Driftwood line comes from these two Goldens. Driftwood Goldens are known for their gentle temperaments and beautiful heads on both males and females. They also have strong healthy genetics and all dogs that are bred at Driftwood must pass their hips, elbows, eyes, and heart. He excelled in both the obedience and conformation rings. Jewel went to the Rainbow Bridge in .In , Sherry was concentrating more on training dogs, and decided to give the Driftwood name to two close friends, Sheri Hoogendyk and Linda Miville. Linda Miville lives in Vicksburg, MI, in the country on 4. Sheri Hoogendyk lives in Kalamazoo, MI with her husband. We have since become good friends and have helped each other raise puppies until they go into their forever homes. We are dedicated hobby breeders and usually have 1 litter per year per girl. We only breed our girls to improve the Golden Retriever breed, according to the standard. For more information, please see our puppy pages. Search for:. He came from Topbrass kennels. I could not have asked for a better dog, friend or loyal partner, Riley was truly the best. He lived to be 2 months shy of his 16th birthday. He was truly the Champion of my heart. It was not until though that we became serious about showing in the breed ring and the goal of developing our own kennel. It was at this point that Kokopelli Goldens was established. Kokopelli has been a sacred figure to Native Americans in the Southwestern United States for thousands of years. He has long been a symbol of fertility that brought good fortune and well-being to the people, assuring success in hunting, planting and growing crops, and human conception. It is believed that he would warm the earth by playing his flute and singing songs, in turn melting the winter snow and creating rain to ensure a good harvest for the coming season. Kokopelli is characterized by his dancing pose, a hunchback and flute. His whimsical nature, charitable deeds, and vital spirit give him a prominent position in Native American mysticism. We feel he has brought and will continue to bring , good fortune to us here at Kokopelli Goldens. In , I made a trip to Snowshoe Kennels in Minnesota to pick up our then 8 week old puppy. Secret went on to become my first Champion and was owner handled to all of her points by myself. I knew in my heart that this was my passion and I was hooked. Since Secret I have finished several other Goldens to their championships and have pointed many others. The girl behind our breeding program was Gangway's Low Rider aka "Chassis. Chassis's dad Am. We are thrilled that we are expecting Chassis's great-grandchildren in October .I will be forever grateful to Beckie for this special girl. As hobby breeders, we breed no more than two - three litters per year. We breed for sound health and temperament first and foremost. We spend countless hours researching pedigrees and strive for the best in each and every breeding that we do. The future of our Golden Retriever breed, along with our future puppy owners are depending on the decisions that we make today.

The boxador dog is a crossbreed developed by mixing a purebred boxer and a purebred Labrador retriever. Although both parent breeds are officially recognized by the AKC, the boxer Lab mix has the status of a designer breed. Boxadors have several different names and are also known as laboxers, boxerlabs, and boxerdors. While some boxerlabs take more after one parent than the other, others are a perfect blend of both parent breeds. Generally speaking, most inherit a boxer-like frame but are sizably built like their Labrador retriever parents. Although their appearance is unpredictable, there are a few traits you can expect to see when it comes to size, coat, and color. Size Being a cross between a Labrador retriever and a boxer, boxerlabs tend to be medium to large size dogs. Most are between 23 and 25 inches high at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 50 to pounds when fully grown. And males tend to be larger than females. Color The Labrador retriever comes in three colors — yellow, chocolate , and black. On the other hand, the boxer also comes in three different colors — white, fawn, and brindle. Keeping this in mind, it comes as no surprise that the Lab boxer mix can come in many different coat colors. The most commonly seen colors in this mix are brown, black, brindle, and white. Coat While a Lab has a short, double water-resistant coat, the boxer is a short-haired breed with a smooth and silky single coat. Most laboxers inherit the short, silky, and smooth coat of their boxer parents; however, some can have a denser coat of a Labrador. Since your boxerlab will inherit character traits from both its parent breeds, you should meet both the Lab and the boxer parents. Since both boxers and Labrador retrievers are friendly, playful, loving, and devoted companions, chances are that their mix will be too. Although boxer Labs can act as either of their parent breeds, they are generally extremely playful and energetic. Depending on how much your mix takes after its boxer parent, they might act goofy and cheerful most of the time. Boxerlabs form strong bonds with their people and do best in large families that have the time and energy to interact and play with them several times during the day. People-oriented and loving, this mix craves companionship and tends to develop separation anxiety when left alone a lot. If they are forced to stay home alone while you are at work, boxerlabs can easily become bored and destructive. Activity Level As an offspring of two very energetic working breeds, the laboxer is a very active dog with high exercise needs. Being such an active and athletic dog, your mix will need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day in addition to two walks. Activities such as running, hiking, swimming, or agility are all great ways to keep your pooch exercised and in excellent shape. Since boxerlabs love to play, games such as fetch, flyball, Frisbee, hide and seek, and tug-of-war are ideal ways to interact with your pooch and keep them entertained and exercised at the same time. Having a securely fenced backyard can be a big bonus when owning this mix. This way, you can keep your laboxer exercised and in great shape without leaving the comforts of your home. This mix craves companionship and is happiest when involved in all family activities. But, besides love and affection, you should also pay attention to: Exercise As mentioned previously, the lab boxer mix needs at least 30 minutes of vigorous activity every day. In addition to two regular daily walks, you should take your dog for a run, hike, or swim to burn excess energy and stay in good shape. Fun-loving, playful, and goofy, this mix loves games and will enjoy having a variety of interactive dog toys that will stimulate their curious mind. Games such as fetch or hide and seek are also a form of exercise that will also keep your pooch entertained and mentally stimulated. Intellectual Stimulation In addition to being highly energetic, laboxers are also intelligent dogs that can easily become bored without mental stimulation. If left to their own devices without interactive toys, your mix will chew and rifle through your belongings just to have some fun. And when you are at home, interact and play with your pooch as much as you can to stave off boredom and encourage good behavior. Companionship True to their parent breeds, boxadors are outgoing, people-loving, and easy-going dogs that form strong bonds with their owners and families. Bred to be loving companions, laboxers are delighted when they are involved in all family activities and are best suited for large families. This mix craves affection and company and can easily develop separation anxiety and other behavioral problems if left at home alone a lot. Ideally, a boxador dog should live in a large family where they will have company at all times. Grooming Most boxerlabs have short glossy coats that are easy to keep clean and are a fairly low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Brushing your pooch once or twice a week is enough to remove loose hair and dander and keep their coat clean. In addition to regular brushing, you will also need to bathe your dog once every two months or as needed. Diet An ideal diet for a Lab boxer mix should be formulated for medium to large-sized breeds with high energy. Make sure the food you are feeding to your pooch is rich in protein and reinforced with all essential vitamins and minerals. Like their Labrador retriever parents, this mix has a tendency to gain weight easily and can become obese in no time. To prevent weight gain and all health problems associated with it, feed your dog two times a day and stick to a regular feeding schedule. Known Health Problems The boxerlab is considered a healthy breed, but they are predisposed to some of the same health problems that boxers and Labrador retrievers face. The most common health issues seen in this designer breed are: Hip and elbow dysplasia: Both boxers and Labrador retrievers are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so boxerlabs can develop it too. Allergies: Like people, dogs can develop food or environmental allergies. Itching is the most common symptom associated with allergies. However, some dogs also exhibit respiratory problems and might cough, sneeze, wheeze, or have a runny discharge from their eyes or nose. Hypothyroidism: This is a relatively common endocrine problem in dogs caused by an underactive thyroid gland. Dogs suffering from hypothyroidism usually experience symptoms of lethargy, weight gain, and changes to the skin and coat. Life Expectancy The Labrador boxer mix has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. But, when cared for properly and taken to regular veterinary check ups, this mix can live longer. Highly intelligent and eager to please, most laboxers are fairly easy to house train, and learn basic obedience. Boxerlabs, like all other dogs, react the best to positive reinforcement training techniques and reward-based training. The idea behind this approach is to reward good behavior using treats or praise and to ignore bad behavior. This type of training has been proven to give the best results and is highly effective even if you are dealing with an extremely willful dog. Besides training, laboxers can also benefit from early socialization and should be exposed to many different people, situations, sounds, and sights from a young age. Early socialization can help your laboxer puppy get used to other people and pets and grow into a friendly and well-rounded dog. Who Should Own A Boxador? Bred to be a loyal and devoted companion, the Lab boxer mix is best suited for active people and families with children. This friendly mix craves companionship and is best suited for large homes and families who can spend time and play with their dog every day. Buying A Boxer Lab Mix Puppy Spend some time researching reputable Lab boxer mix breeders before you decide to welcome a laboxer puppy into your home. Since this is a fairly new designer breed, be prepared to spend more time researching and tracking down a reputable breeder. Once you locate a breeder you like, schedule an appointment to meet the puppies and the mother and to inspect the facilities they are kept in. If by any chance the breeder refuses to show you the conditions the puppies are kept in, walk away and look for another breeder. A reputable breeder will be more than happy to answer all of your questions and will also be able to provide health certificates for both parents and all puppies. However, you may end up paying more, depending on the breeder, your location, lineage, and gender. Remember to always use positive reinforcement to make good behavior stick! Boxadors are no couch potatoes. A Boxer Lab mix needs regular physical activity since one of its parents the Labrador has a gene mutation that leads to obesity. Some owners walk their Boxadors thrice a day, but a 30 to minute walk twice a day is good enough. Keep them happy by providing them plenty of space to run around and play with you or on their own. This crossbreed can get depressed if you leave it alone for long periods and it will make sure everyone knows about its frustration by whining or howling. They want to make you happy. Boxadors are a playful bunch and would do anything to please their humans. TLC goes a long way! Think you can manage its high energy level and training needs? This hybrid has a fairly manageable coat, but this Boxer Lab mix is not hypoallergenic, as it sheds a moderate amount of fur. The fur usually comes off during spring and autumn, so, during these seasons, you have to brush their coat every day. Even after the shedding season, maintain that glossy hair by brushing it once a week. Brushing their pearly whites once or twice a week. Cleaning their ears two times a month. Checking the fur under their eyes at least twice a week. Trimming those pretty nails twice a month or when needed. The proper diet Just like Labradors, the Boxador loves to eat! The Lab Boxer mix has a lifespan of 12 to 15 years, after all. These are some of the health issues the Boxer Lab mix may be prone to: Hypothyroidism. Chopped carrots or celery make great little healthy treats. Your vet can help you develop a care routine. Boxadors love to eat and will rapidly gain weight if they are allowed to free feed. Pick a high quality dog food and stick to a feeding schedule; two feedings per day could be ideal to keep this pooch happy. They also need an exercise schedule. A 30 minute hike, walk, or game of fetch, plus an hour of active running around a yard will help burn off pent up energy. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. Keeping them clean and dry is the best way to avoid doctor visits. If your dog develops a pungent aroma or is scratching their ears excessively, they may have an ear infection and will require a vet exam. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth a minimum of three times a week. Clean your dogs eyes as you would your own. Boxador Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed specific rescue for Boxadors because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Boxer or Labrador Retriever breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Your Boxer mixed with a Lab will have very short hair that is very easy to groom and maintain. But if your dog has dominant Lab genes then expect a lot of shedding. Lab Boxer suffers from seasonal shedding, and its coat may be kept in check using regular grooming and the right kind of dog shampoo and grooming products. Imagine you could come home to a lovable, dedicated, companion for life! If you knew what to look for when buying a German Shepherd puppy, you could find your next best friend. Before you buy your new best friend, read this information so you know what to look for in buying a healthy, quality German Shepherd puppy. I group them into major categories. Will you show him in conformation? Do you want to work with him in Schutzhund or herding? Or do you want a confident and alert companion? Know exactly what you want from your puppy. These dogs are the least costly since they have a trait that prevents them from winning in conformation competitions. These flaws rarely matter to most pet owners. And many minor faults like flat withers or slightly smaller offset ears will probably go unnoticed by most owners. The vast majority of GSDs are family pets. These dogs make great pets as long as they have sound temperaments! They breed some dogs for certain traits that are highly desirable but considered a fault. For example, long-coat or plush-coat GSDs. Show-quality dogs have good temperament and health. You usually buy them for their breed standard qualities that make them able to compete in confirmation or show events. A show-quality dog may cost significantly more if they have the traits desirable to win at a show. This group comes from Championship show lines with a long history of winning. If you plan on showing your Shepherd this is the quality you want. Beware of any breeder who claims they only raise competition-quality dogs. Even the best breeders produce many pet-quality dogs and if a breeder says they only breed perfect dogs, this is a red flag to not buy from them. The GSD is a herding breed, and the working-quality dogs excel at working trials such as scent competitions and Schutzhund. Other work includes climbing and jumping competitions or searching and tracking. They need mental stimulation to keep them occupied and take a lot of time to handle properly. These dogs are better with experienced handlers since you use them for high drive working and competition. They require hours and years of training and preparation for you to have total control during competition. We base this decision on preference. With the correct upbringing and training, both sexes are loyal companions and good with children. They may grow into more dominant dogs, so a confident handler is more desirable. Males may hike their back legs to mark their territory. This can occur on any object — chairs, walls, couches or even your leg. I suggest an extra bout of socialization during this stage, especially with other well-behaved dogs. So they may be better for the first-time owner. Unspayed females come into season every 6 months, so they must receive monitoring and watch to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Their season time can vary from as little as every 4 months to every 9 months. They can attract males to your property and on walks that will harass them if not spayed. Certain breeders and organizations will deal only in a certain coat length and color. The standard coat length is a short coat with double layers. Guard hairs on the top cover a softer underlayer of hair that provides warmth and protection. But there are many coat lengths available depending on your liking. Look online at the different GSD coat lengths to get an idea of what type of fur you want your dog to have. The longer the fur the more grooming involved. The color you choose is a matter of individual taste. Keep in mind the color of many Shepherds alters from their puppyhood to around 2 years of age. Your dog may become lighter or darker. Of course, you have already read a lot of books with advice on how to choose the right puppy of a German Shepherd, east European, as well as a Newfoundland, Rottweiler, Spaniel, or Spitz puppy. You understand what is the fundamental difference between these breeds and why a Retriever puppy will never become a VIP bodyguard, and a black terrier will hardly ever pass for a draft husky. Why Opting For a German Shepherd Puppy Is a Good Choice The German Shepherd is prone to learning from a very young to deep old age, while many other breeds cannot boast of this, even if their appearance is more perfect than that of a German Shepherd. The most well-known characteristics that a German Shepherd owns are: pronounced protective and guarding instinct; the ability to make independent decisions, and active actions, and at the same time be completely submissive to the owner; sociability, playfulness, and curiosity; lack of aggression signs towards others and deep affection for the owner; a willingness to happily take on tasks, learn, and remain completely fearless when faced with unfamiliar surroundings or unforeseen difficulties; In addition, the Shepherd dog is calmly confident and features strong nerves, combativeness, and assertiveness which are the main qualities of a good service dog. Perhaps, due to this set of breed characteristics, few larger and more ferocious breeds can compete with a GS, both for guarding the house and as a personal protector. It is not recommended to take puppies under 4 weeks old from their mother. This applies not only to GSs but other breeds. At the age of one month, the baby has already been given all the necessary vaccinations. However, only a person who can devote a lot of time to raising a puppy can afford to take a Shepherd at such a young age. In addition to 6 meals a day, and socialization, the new owner will need to complete 1, different tasks, which require, above all, a lot of time. If there is no time, it is worth finding a puppy aged 4 to 6 months. And it is advisable to take such a teenager from a nursery that focuses on breeding German Shepherds and not all the breeds at once. It happens that a puppy stays in the nursery because the money deposit was given for it but, for some reason, people could not pick up the reserved puppy. If the grown-up German Shepherd puppy constantly lived in an aviary and was deprived of close contact with people and the outside world, owners who have not previously dealt with this breed should not choose such a youngster. These young dogs are for experienced cinologysts. Lack of socialization can be corrected but it cannot be fully eliminated. Testing for the Puppy and Its Future Owner You may already know how to choose a purebred German Shepherd by external signs under the age of 3 months. Simple tests will help you choose a puppy with the desired character. Visit the breeder at a predetermined time when the puppies do not sleep or, conversely, are not hungry. You are taking a future friend for life, and enthusiastic emotions with such a choice are inappropriate. When buying a new friend, inspect the litter meticulously. Pay attention to the following: eyes do not water; traces of diarrhea under the tails are not observed; wet noses are without purulent crusts; legs are straight and strong; fur is clean, reminding of the plush; on the skin under the coat, there are no signs of peeling and scabs; all puppies are active and well-fed; the body is elastic and strong to the touch; the puppy has a pleasant dog smell; the mother is not exhausted; bowls and bedding are clean; there is enough heat and light. Of course, the owner of the dog mother has already taken her to the next room. Those who paid attention to the unusual sound are yours. Throw carefully, of course a tennis ball at the puppies. Those who were not afraid and did not try to escape are yours. Those who, having scouted the situation, did not begin to whine , pressing themselves onto the floor, but hurried towards the bedding are yours. Pay attention to those who have shown interest in a new object. The best are those who took and dragged it. Keys and money are the dirtiest household items. This testing method was used 20 years ago. Today, it is dangerous for the health of puppies! Invite those who dragged the rubber duck to pull a piece of fabric. If the baby dog willingly starts the fight, not letting the cloth go when you pull it towards you, they are good boys or girls. Turn the puppy you like on its back and hold it with an open palm for a few seconds. A clear alpha leader is easy to identify by its non-calming behavior for seconds, and even trying to bite you in this position. It may not be your choice! You will get too many problems associated with the puppy, or it will never be possible to completely subdue it. The puppy that squealed, pulled back its paw, and did not lose its interest in you is yours. The one who barks trying to drive brothers and sisters away from the bowl is not for you. The one who gives up its place at the feeder is also not yours. Yours is the one who, regardless of the obstacles, has taken its place and calmly devours food, without moving from its point, snapping, and running around the bowl. Now, you have at best 2 or 3 puppies left in front of you. You need to select the fat-footed one who will try to get out through the opening without panic and squealing. The tests are simple, but they will allow you to select a good puppy and raise a real working German Shepherd from it without unnecessary costs and nerves. Talk to the breeder. Such puppies are sold at a more reasonable price, but the puppy card for them is mandatory to be filled out as well. If you are given puppies for free, in the absence of their mother, there is a reason to seriously consider whether it is a Shepherd dog at all, even if their mother has pedigree documents. This is not a dog of one owner! The versatility and flexibility of this breed are proven by the fact that GSs accept a new family and a new environment without any problems. The main thing for it is to have its own business — to serve a human! Of course, parting with the former owner seriously affects the condition of the dog, but it will not have a destructive effect on its psyche. And the sooner you engage the German Shepherd in work, the more chances you will have to become a new God for it. If the German Shepherd was properly brought up and grew up surrounded by people, it has working characteristics in good conditions, and the reputation of its previous owner is beyond all questions, such a dog will be quite useful to your family. Finding out the previous story and background of an adult GS why it is refused, what the complaints about its behavior are, and other prompting questions is a must! The reason may be the saddest and most trivial — the previous owner died, and relatives are not able to either support or care for the dog. David W. I admire German Shepherds. They are magnificent dogs! I have been dealing with dogs, namely German Shepherds, throughout my life. I have been working part-time as a dog trainer and instructor for about 5 years, dealing mainly with German Shepherds. So I know a bit about these animals. Therefore, I decided to share my knowledge and experience about this fantastic breed. If you need help with advice and care tips or want to know more about German Shepherd dogs, welcome to this blog. Do further research into these local German Shepherd breed clubs in your area. Whether you get information from their websites or contact them directly for help, local breed clubs are a great way to get the names of reputable breeders in your area. Veterinarians come into contact with a lot of different types of animal care-givers, from breeders to shelters to individual owners. Because they know so much about animal issues in the community, it's a good idea to talk to a few vets in your area for ethical breeder recommendations. Also consider speaking to other German Shepherd owners, dog groomers, or dog trainers. If you visit a breed show, talk to owners and trainers about who they've had good or bad experiences with. A good breeder won't have a variety of breeds available for adoption. Look for a breeder who specializes only in German Shepherds. Your best option is to find a breeder who has years of experience with the German Shepherd breed. They should be able to answer your questions about development, temperament, and training easily and without hesitation. A key marker of a good breeder is the amount of effort they put into early socialization. Puppies need to be taught from an early age to live harmoniously with humans. If a breeder keeps litters isolated away from the home, the puppies will not be used to the sights and sounds of a normal household, and won't be used to human interaction. This can become a problem by the time they are old enough to be adopted. Make sure the puppies spend at least some time in the breeders' home with them. The more time they spend with humans, the more you can trust the breeder. An ethical breeder will never try to breed a female who hasn't reached sexual maturity — about 2 years of age. Mothers should also be given enough time to recover from pregnancies and being separated from their litters as they get adopted. Females should be healthy and alert. Never adopt a puppy from a breeder who breeds a young or unhealthy female, or who doesn't give mothers time to recover before breeding them again. Puppies should never be sold or separated from their mothers before 8 weeks of age. The breeder should have begun the puppies' vaccination and deworming processes before adopting them out. Make sure that's happened, and ask about any health problems the vet may have reported in these early checkups. Ask if the breeders have their dogs tested for the Degenerative Myelopathy DM gene. This can determine whether a common inherited disease in German Shepherds is present in the litter's bloodline. Dogs with DM suffer from progressive paralysis, particularly in the hind legs. Note that being AKC-registered does not mean that you are getting a healthy animal. It means that the owner paid money to the AKC to register the dog. While experts recommend against breeding animals with known genetic problems, an OFA certification will give you proof. Be aware, though, that there's no guarantee of health in any animal. There's always a chance that two dogs free of known genetic diseases can still produce a puppy with genetic problems. The breeder should be evaluating you as a potential owner, just as you're evaluating him or her as a breeder. No good breeder will just hand over a puppy without being sure that the new owners will be able to provide it with a good, healthy life. Ask the breeder what they look for in a good owner, and whether they've ever turned potential owners away. The breeder should be able to answer these questions without even having to think about it. You might also ask the breeder for references so you can contact other families who have dogs from previous litters. A reputable breeder should ask questions about your dog background and experience, your lifestyle, and your family to guide you in making the best decision. As difficult as it may be, a good breeder will be willing to turn you away if they think you're a bad fit for their particular puppies. For example, if the litter has particularly inactive parents, the puppies may not be a good fit for your highly active lifestyle. If you get turned away, ask if the breeder can point you to other options and litters so you can expand your search. Also ask if they have any unborn litters coming up that may be a better fit for you. Be patient and don't get discouraged. With enough patience and legwork, you'll find the right puppy. Don't lie to a breeder just to get a puppy, though. Trust the breeder's decision-making process. You don't want to end up with a dog who doesn't fit your needs. Avoid any breeder who offers to cut you a "deal," who has unclean or smelly kennels, or who acts suspiciously in any way. Trust your instincts. A breeder who's in it just for the money has the wrong motivation, and likely isn't interested in the welfare of their dogs. Make sure the dogs are not crowded into cages. They should have plenty of room to stumble around and explore their surroundings. Part of the time, puppies should be kept in the home to expose them to household environments. There should be adequate food and water for all animals on the premises. Kennels should be cleaned daily. Although it may be that a dog had an accident just before you arrived, be suspicious of a kennel that looks like it hasn't been cleaned recently. If a breeder doesn't have a return policy, it suggests they don't really care what happens to their dogs once they leave their property. That's not a good sign! Also find out what kind of documentation you would get with your puppy. Would you get registration papers and pedigree papers? Negotiate for what you want if it's not included in the contract. Be very wary of a breeder who will not discuss the chance that a puppy may need to be returned. Does the contract require you to take the puppy for a vet visit within a set time? Does it cover hereditary issues for life? For only a certain period of time? What does the breeder agree to offer? Trade for another puppy when one is available? Are there restrictions on the activities you can do with your dog that will invalidate the contract or guarantee? Are you purchasing a show prospect puppy or a pet quality animal? Does the breeder have strong feelings or even bans about the vaccinations, foods or supplements for your puppy? Are these opinions based on solid science? Discover the online program that more than 57, dog owners have used to rapidly transform their dog into a well-behaved, obedient furry friend. Below I'll list a few tips to help you choose your own GSD puppy by considering the following things, in no particular order: 1 Carefully look at the puppy's parents, all the littermates and any other relatives onsite - It's really important to make sure that both parents are friendly, healthy and active. One important thing to keep in mind, many nursing bitches can be a little "down" and maybe even undernourished when feeding a large litter of puppies, however she should still be friendly and curious about you. Another important tip: make sure both parents have been OFA certified. Chances are very high that you may regret bringing home a sickly puppy later. Overall, young German shepherd puppies should be playful, clean and odor-free, full bodied but not too chunky and have bright clear eyes, a clean nose, clean anus and a full hair coat no mats or bald patches. All puppies of any kind need their mothers very early on. They need them to nurse and they also need them as teachers to model behaviors for the puppy that they will need to know later on in life. It is also important to make sure that the puppies have gotten all their first vaccinations and wormings. Overall, the best time to get a German Shepherd puppy is basically sometime between eight to twelve weeks of age. If you find a GSD puppy that you want and is older than twelve to fourteen weeks just make sure that it has been received a lot of socialization with people and other "critters". The overall setup of the kennel area should be that of a well kept area for all the dogs and puppies. Never buy a puppy from a breeder that keeps their animals in dirty, filthy or nasty conditions. If you sincerely feel as if something is not right with the breeder, the breeders objective in selling the puppies, the surroundings or the puppy itself, step back. Give yourself time to really think about the entire situation. You never want to get a puppy of any kind on impulse! When you bring that new GSD puppy home, you want to be confident in the fact that the entire process of choosing a German Shepherd Puppy has been as stress free as possible and that you have just made the best choice for both you and your new GSD puppy because this is a new relationship that can last, easily, eight years or more. They had little pictures of cats on them. Then I took one out and he ran around in circles. This guide will help you learn how to select the best German Shepherd puppy to add to your family. Is a German Shepherd right for me? This is the first question you should ask yourself before you even consider bringing home a new German Shepherd puppy. You need to evaluate your personal and family lifestyle by asking yourself the following questions: Where do you live? German Shepherds are often on the restricted breed list for apartments. Do you spend much of your time at home, or do you have an active work and social life? Are you willing to spend more time at home on the weekends and evenings during puppyhood, even if it means missing social events? Do you love traveling a lot? If so, will you take your puppy with you? If not, do you have someone or someplace you trust to watch your dog when you travel? Is your whole family excited about the idea of a new German Shepherd puppy? Are you already active or willing to become more active? Do you have time in your schedule to devote to training? Knowing the answers to those questions will help get you a couple of steps closer to deciding whether or not a German Shepherd is the right choice for you. Important things to know about German Shepherds: German Shepherd dogs are sometimes affectionately known as German shedders. German Shepherds shed all year long , however, they blow their coats twice a year during which time they will shed exponentially more. When considering getting this breed, you should be comfortable having a dog that sheds. Trimming their nails , cleaning their ears, brushing their teeth, and brushing their coat regularly is sufficient. Of course, during the shedding seasons more frequent brushing will be needed. German Shepherds were originally developed for herding sheep. Accordingly, they have the desire to work and respond best to proper training from a young age, and an active lifestyle. German Shepherds are known to be clingy, so be prepared to have a shadow following you around the house and maybe even in the restroom. German Shepherds are good with kids and are great family dogs. However, they need proper socialization and training at a young age so they can learn how to behave around both kids and adults. German Shepherds require a lot of mental stimulation and have high energy levels, especially as a puppy. As much as I love Allie, she was more than a handful as a puppy. I have seen instances where people underestimate the time, energy, and training a German Shepherd puppy requires and get overwhelmed after bringing their puppy home. These people end up giving up their puppies. It breaks my heart to know these awesome dogs are given up because of a lack of knowledge when selecting a breed of dog. Although they are a handful if you are willing to put in the effort they are in my opinion one of the best breeds of dog to own. German Shepherds are too smart for their own good. They learn things scary fast and sometimes get themselves into trouble because of how smart they are. They learn your routine and habits, and they also learn when and how they can get away with mischief. German Shepherds are incredibly loyal and become very connected to their owners and family. German Shepherds are typically loving and affectionate. From the second I met Allie she greeted me with a wet tongue to the face. That is still her favorite greeting she will kiss anyone that will allow her to get close enough. German Shepherds need training. They need to know that you are the leader and in charge. If not, they will quickly take over the role of being in charge and that is where problems arise. A bored, untrained, not active German Shepherd can become one of the stories you sometimes hear on the news about a GSD being aggressive. In most of those cases, the problem was with the owners and not the dog breed as a whole. Adoption or Breeder? First, you need to decide if you are going to adopt a German Shepherd puppy or buy one from a breeder. Here are some of the benefits of adopting: Rescue puppies are often already sociable, at least partially trained, and loving dogs. Therefore, you will save a lot of time on house training your new puppy. Older puppies or dogs are likely to be calmer than a younger puppy. You are saving the life of a dog that might not have otherwise found a home. The cost of adopting is typically much cheaper than buying a puppy from a breeder. If you decide to get a German Shepherd puppy from a breeder, here are a few things that can help you identify a good, ethical German Shepherd breeder: Ethical breeders care about the health and wellbeing of the puppy and are not just in the business for money. Ethical breeders always make sure that only healthy dogs breed together and follow a strict breeding program where they ensure that breeding and puppy spaces are clean. They should also have papers showing the age of the parent and the family tree of the puppy. Ethical breeders will happily show you around their entire setup; they should have nothing to hide. Ethical breeders will happily answer as many questions as you have to ask. You want to select one that will be compatible with you and your family. Consider the following when picking a puppy from the litter: Choose a puppy that is sociable around you and other puppies. Pick a puppy that walks confidently with its head high and tail up and wagging. Choose a puppy that has clear eyes, ears , and teeth, walks evenly, and appears clean. Basically, choose a puppy that looks healthy. Look at the personalities of the puppies. Choose a welcoming puppy that wants to greet you as opposed to one that retreats or appears shy. Ask to interact with each puppy one by one after seeing them with their littermates. That way you can get a better sense of how the puppy responds to you without distractions. If possible, visit the litter at least three times before making a final decision, this will allow you to determine the personalities of each of those little fluff balls, and see which would best fit into your family. How old should a German Shepherd puppy be when you take it home? Any puppy should be at least 8 weeks old before being separated from their mother. By this timeline, their sensory organs will have also developed fully which will help you to spot any deformities or medical issues. Be wary of any breeder that will allow you to take your puppy home before 8 weeks old. How do you puppy proof for German Shepherds? German Shepherds are naturally active and tend to explore the world with their mouths, especially during their adolescent period. So, before you can bring your new puppy home, there are a few things you can do to puppy-proof your house: Get rid of any poisonous plants or put them out of reach of your new puppy. Cover electrical cords with cable wraps or PVC pipes. Buy a new laundry basket that has a lid, no holes, and is tall. Make sure both your kitchen and bathroom trash cans have lids. Your new puppy will dig around for anything to bite, like chicken bones, diapers, used hygienic products, or even a disposable razor. If possible, you should buy new trash cans that only open when a button is pressed. Store all the chemicals in secured cabinets or even better on high shelves. German Shepherd puppies have strong teeth and can open plastic containers by biting through even the toughest of plastic! Put away any small items or toys that are small enough for your puppy to swallow. Think of small kid toys like Legos or dollhouse furniture that could be dangerous for a curious puppy. Find a safe spot for your shoes. Whether in a closed closet or in the laundry room behind a closed door. I remember losing a pair of brand-new shoes because I forgot to put them away and Allie thought chewing them was a fun idea. Bringing home a new German Shepherd puppy The period of bringing a new German Shepherd puppy home and introducing them to your home and family takes time and above all, patience. If possible, plan to take off work for at least a few days after bringing your puppy home. I picked up Allie on a Saturday, and then took most of the following week off to spend time getting her adjusted to her new home. Remember, your new puppy has been taken from the only family it knew, and you are now their new family. That first week home was a good week of bonding with Allie. It helped her feel comfortable with her new life and allowed me to really get to know my new beautiful energy filled puppy. The best tip for a smooth transition when bringing your German Shepherd puppy home is to begin crate training and potty training as soon as possible. As a breed prone to separation anxiety , you want to give your GSD a zone to feel safe, comfortable, and content to be on their own. While the initial steps of crate training can be time-consuming, it can make the difference between a dog that is a joy to own, and one that can never be left on their own — so, be the dog parent your pooch deserves and put the time in! New German Shepherd puppy checklist and things to buy It is important that your new puppy feels welcomed into their new home. Some items are ok to be left with your puppy, and other items are more dangerous or will be destroyed. This checklist will help you to know what to buy when getting a puppy. New German Shepherd Puppy Checklist. Final thoughts Where do I start? The first thing that you have to do before you can pick out the best puppy, is to pick out the best breeder. This may come easily, as you may already have a breeder in mind that you trust and who has a good reputation. But chances are that you will have to do your research. And there is also a good chance that you may need to travel some distance to the right breeder. Even if the breeder is several states away, consider making the trip. Getting a new GSD puppy is a significant life commitment. The effort and time that you invest now in going about this properly will pay off for years to come. Here are some important things to look for in a breeder once you locate one that you are interested in pursuing. Call the breeder and have a conversation The first thing to do is call the breeder and have a conversation. A quality German Shepherd breeder will actually require this. They will not permit someone to just show up and purchase one of their dogs and take it home. They will ask you questions such as: Why do you want a GSD puppy? This will aid them in helping you choose. Where do you live, in an apartment or in a home? They will want to ensure that the puppy will not be in a cramped space. Do you have a yard, and is it fenced-in? They will want to make sure that the puppy will have adequate room to exercise as it grows. Do you have children in your home? They will want to make sure that you understand the importance of socialization and training to keep your family safe. Do you have other pets in your home? They will want to make sure that you know how to properly introduce the puppy to other animals, and whether any other pets you have may actually be a danger to the puppy. What type of work do you do, does it require you to be away from home for long periods of time? Because GSDs do not do well alone, they will want to make sure that you have adequate time to devote to your dog. Are you financially prepared to take on a GSD? While this may be a bit of a personal question, it is important to know that you are financially able to care for a GSD. They are expensive to care for, and it is fair for a breeder to ask this question. If a breeder does not ask you some form of these questions, then perhaps think twice. It may be an indication that they are more interested in profit than raising a quality puppy that they care will go to a quality home. Questions for you to ask the breeder: How many different types of dogs do you raise? Can you provide me with a pedigree of all of your puppies? A pedigree is essentially a family tree for your puppy. A good breeder should have a detailed pedigree for any dog they sell. Beware of any breeder that wants to charge for this or says that they will provide it at a later date. Do you have references? They should provide you with several without thinking twice. All reputable breeders will offer this guarantee in the form of a written contract. Do you breed your females more than once a year? Female GSDs should not be bred more than one time per year. This allows for adequate recovery time and maintains good health. Can you provide me with a detailed medical history for your puppies? Health screenings are essential for puppies, and a reputable breeder should be able to provide proof of these. Can you explain any potential health issues for GSD which may come up later in life? A knowledgable breeder should be able to clearly explain conditions like hip dysplasia and other health issues more common in GSDs than other dogs. If the answer to any of these questions comes up as unsatisfactory, move on. It is simply not worth the risk of pursuing the breeder any further. Unfortunately, there are far too many unethical breeders who take a lot of shortcuts which results in dogs prone to both health and behavioral issues. Why is this? You should never take home a puppy that is less than 8 weeks old. More than half of the states in the U. And out of those states, only 3 permit a puppy to be offered for sale under the age of 8 weeks. The reason for these laws is primarily so that puppies are properly weaned from their mothers and able to eat on their own. In addition to weaning, puppies need to be initially socialized by their mothers as well as their siblings. So a puppy will be taught that these things are bad during these 8 weeks. If you remove a puppy from the litter too early, they may not learn these lessons and develop behavioral problems as they get older. Much like a spoiled child that never learns, often times the source of an ill-behaved puppy can be traced to a lack of discipline at a young age. So to ensure that you have a healthy puppy, that is also sold in accordance with state laws and regulations, understand that it must be 8 weeks old see link above for exceptions — regardless of state law exceptions, waiting 8 weeks is good practice. Decide whether you want to male or female You may have a personal preference for either a female or a male German Shepherd puppy. It is important however to not necessarily just go with your gut on this one. Take a moment and understand some general differences between the two genders. I will explore this issue more in-depth in another post, but here are some important general points to consider. Territorial: Males are naturally more territorial than females. This may give them more of a tendency to wander off in an effort to broaden their territory. Very possessive: Male GSDs are generally more possessive than females. They may be possessive over food and bones, toys, and you! Dominance: Male German Shepherds tend to be more dominant than females. This may result in more of a proclivity towards aggressive bullying behaviors to make sure that it is understood that they are the boss. Dominance requires training to keep it in check. Singular bonding: Male GSDs tend to bond more closely with one person rather than a group of people like a family. Territorial: Females are therefore more welcoming and less territorial than males. They are also less likely to wander off as they have no desire to expand their territory. Dominance: Females display less dominant behaviors than males. Non-singular bonding: Females are more likely to bond with a number of people in a family rather than an individual person. So, how do I choose between the two? This question comes down to the purpose for which you want a German Shepherd. If you are looking for a dog to have trained in protection and are looking primarily for a four-legged security system for your home, then a male is a good choice. However, if your primary interest is to just have a family pet that socializes well with others, then a female is probably right for you. Testing the puppy There is no better way to determine whether or not a specific puppy is the right one for you than to actually get hands-on and doing some investigating. However, even before you begin any interactions with a puppy, make sure that you are testing the correct one. Never try and force any interaction, begin with puppies that are naturally drawn to you. Just like with people, you cannot force a match and expect fruitful results. So be patient and make sure at very least that the puppy is not aversive toward you before you being. The tests: Clap your hands: Does it run away or does it come? A more timid dog may, however, be apprehensive to approach. Make eye contact: When the puppy is looked at, does it stare back at you? If the puppy looks directly at you, it is showing confidence. Vocally call the puppy over to you: Does it come to you right away? If it does how not, however, this could show a behavioral issue or hearing problem, or it could be an indication of another illness as well. Pet the puppy: How does it respond to your touch? However, if it meets your touches with biting or growling, then this is likely an indication of an uneven or bad temperament. It will not just grow out of this, it will have to be trained out of it. Bring a ball with you to test with the puppy: Roll the ball and see what the puppy does. Does it follow it and then bring it to you? Or does it take it away for itself. A more dominant puppy will just take the ball and keep it for itself, reluctant to give it back to you. On the other hand, a more independent puppy may show no interest at all. And one that is submissive may actually be frightened. If you are looking for a very sociable puppy, look for the one that brings the ball right back to you to play some more. The puppy that brings it right back is also an ideal candidate for training in retrieving and other exercises. An even-tempered puppy will show interest in and play with the toy, but it will also allow you to participate and take the toy back without showing you any aggression. Roll the puppy over: Once the puppy comes over to you, gently roll it onto its back and hold it in place. Do not be forceful but be firm. See how the puppy reacts. Is it resisting, or is it just relaxing? A puppy with a more dominant personality will take the path of most resistance, and it may growl or attempt to bite at you. And the even-tempered puppy is the one that may resist for a short time but then submit to what you are doing. Pick up the puppy: Physically pick up the puppy by gently holding it underneath its chest with an open hand. Lift it up high, even above the height of your head and hold it there. What does the puppy do? Does it struggle, or does it stay relaxed? A puppy that struggles may be fearful or dominant. On the other hand, a puppy that stays absolutely relaxed is displaying confidence in itself and trust in you. Hold on to a paw and press it gently: This is somewhat similar to holding it on its back. If there is a response to be had, it will happen immediately. Resistance or pulling the paw away may show dominance and temperament towards aggression. The even-tempered puppy will be you curious as to what you are doing. It may investigate a little and might even lick you. Make an unexpected noise: Whether it is banging a pot and pan together or just yelling, create an unexpected noise. See what the puppy does, does it show fear, interest, or aggression? A fearful puppy may run away or even whimper. While an aggressive-tempered puppy may actually growl and try to bite you. An even-tempered puppy will simply look surprised, and may even want to investigate a little bit further. Meet the parents A lot of breeders will have both the father sire and the mother bitch of the puppies on site. However, some of them will only have the mother because sometimes the father is on loan as a stud from a different breeder. But the mother for sure should be on site, and you should get an idea of what she is like. In the case of my last German Shepherd, I was able to meet both parents. His mother was very kind and sociable and eager to be petted. While on the other hand, his father was clearly dominant, and not a dog to be messed with. Because of my prior experience and knowledge, my GSD turned out exactly as I thought he would — fairly sociable yet wildly protective of me. This was all right because I knew what to expect and I was able to train my dog properly to take the edge off of some of his more dominance behaviors. However, my choice was an informed decision based on years of experience. If you are new to owning a German Shepherd, this may not be an ideal combination. I would recommend for a new German Shepherd owner to consider making sure that both parents are more docile, and possibly even lean towards acquiring a female for your first German Shepherd. Visit the puppy on more than one occasion Just like people, puppies have their on days and their off days. You will not be able to get a very accurate picture of how your puppy will be on one short visit. In fact, with my last dog, I visited him at least 4 times and stayed for at least 30 minutes with him each time prior to taking him home. A good breeder will have no issue with you doing this, and in fact, will prefer it. They want their dogs to be well-matched with their new owners, so this is common practice. The puppy should become accustomed to the people it will soon be spending its entire life with. So the more familiarity that you build now in this phase, the easier that puppy will transition to home life with you and your family. All of these steps are positive reinforcement for your new puppy and will build familiarity and a bond even before you arrive home. Also, bring a small blanket or clothing item and ask the breeder to leave it with the puppy. This will allow your puppy to become familiar with the scent of you and your home. Making for a better transition. So by default, this knowledge enables the breeder to be very good at placing the proper puppies with the proper personalities. Remember to stay focused and not lose sight of your primary objective, which is to select the right puppy for you and your family. If you take the time and care to do your research and ask the right questions, you will come together with the right puppy for you. But remember, this is just the beginning of a major life commitment. So take this step of choosing the right GSD puppy seriously, and you will have laid the foundation for a loving and rewarding relationship for years to come. One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a German Shepherd puppy is what their personality and temperament are like. German Shepherds are just like people. They each have their own personalities, and some are able to get along with other dogs better than others. In fact, how your German Shepherd puppy interacts with other dogs and people will mostly come down to their individual personality. This will mean that your German Shepherd puppy will need less training, and a lot of your interactions with one another will come more naturally. The best puppy for your home may not be the biggest, prettiest dog in the litter! How to get started Before you can worry about choosing the best German Shepherd puppy for your home, you will need to find a breeder. You will need to opt for a German Shepherd breeder who has a good reputation. So you will need to do your research to find the right breeder for your needs. You may even need to travel a fair way to find the perfect breeder. Even if your German Shepherd breeder is located several states away, it will be worth the trip. If you put in the right amount of time and effort now, it should pay dividends throughout the next few years. Here are a few handy tips to help you find the right breeder to buy a German Shepherd puppy from. Talk to your German Shepherd breeder One of the first things you should do is to give the German Shepherd breeder a call. You may be surprised to learn that quality breeders will actually require this to ensure that the puppy is going to a good home. They may not be as interested in the health of the puppy and their new home as they should be, and are more concerned about making a profit from their dogs. The breeder will want to ensure that you have the right space to accommodate your German Shepherd puppy. Have you got any kids? Training your new puppy and giving them the right amount of socialization will be essential for keeping your family safe. Do you have a fenced outdoor space? Your puppy will need to have a good amount of room so they can run around and play. They will need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. Why do you want a German Shepherd? The breeder will want to know what purpose you want a German Shepherd puppy for. It could be as a pet, for added protection, or to show competitively. Do you have any other pets? This will be an important factor as you will need to know how to introduce your new puppy to other animals. It will also be crucial to know if you have any other pets which could pose a danger to the puppy. What do you do for a living? If you have to work away for long periods of time so that your puppy is left alone for large portions of the day, the breeder will want to know this. Can you afford the financial responsibility of this puppy? Dogs are a financial commitment. This may seem like too much of a personal question, however, it will be important to establish that you can properly care for your new dog. Questions you can ask your breeder There are far too many unethical breeders around. Some irresponsible breeders will take shortcuts when it comes to breeding, which will leave you with dogs who have behavioral and health issues. Do you raise other breeds of dog? This can show you whether they have been bred from healthy dogs. Have you got any references? A good quality breeder should be able to give you these easily enough. Have you got a pedigree for the puppies? This is essentially a family tree of the puppies. A good quality breeder should be able to produce the proper lineage of your new puppy when asked. If the breeder attempts to charge you for this, or says they will give it to you another time, be very wary. Every breeder worth their salt will give you this guarantee as a written contract. How often do you breed your females in a single year? This will allow them to properly recover from giving birth, and help to maintain great health. Have you got a detailed medical history for the puppies? A reputable breeder should be able to give you proof of any health screenings that their puppies have had. This is essential for healthy dogs. Could you explain to me if German Shepherds have any health issues they may suffer from as adults? Puppies should never be taken home if they are less than 8 weeks old. In fact, more than half of the states in America have laws to prevent this from happening. There are several laws which dictate how old a puppy needs to be before it can be adopted or sold. There are only 3 which actually allow puppies to be sold under 8 weeks old: D. These laws are in place for a reason. This is to ensure that all puppies have been properly weaned from their mothers and that they are able to eat without help. Puppies will also need to have been properly socialized before they can leave their mothers. Their mothers and siblings can help to socialize the puppy properly. Most of the behavioral problems in adult dogs can be traced back to this lack of discipline and not having been socialized properly. To make sure that you have a healthy puppy, you will need to choose a puppy that is being sold in accordance with the laws of their state. This will mean buying a puppy that is at least 8 weeks old, if not older. Even if you happen to find a puppy in D. Male or female puppy Perhaps you already have a preference for the gender of your puppy. You will need to understand that the two genders actually have distinct differences. Here are a few things for you to consider to help you make a fully informed choice. Female German Shepherds 1. Physical appearance Typically, female German Shepherds will be much smaller than males. They will also have a less muscular stature. Dominance A female dog will display less behavioral dominance than a male dog will. Family bonding Female German Shepherds are more likely to bond with the whole family rather than a single individual. Territorial A female German Shepherd will be much less territorial than a male dog will be. Male German Shepherds Male dogs will tend to be much larger than females. They are also more muscular. Dominance Males will display a lot more dominance than females. Single person bonding A male German Shepherd is more likely to bond very closely with a single person instead of a whole family. Territorial A male German Shepherd is more likely to be territorial. This means they could be more likely to wander off in an attempt to expand their home turf. Possessive These males tend to be on the more possessive side than their female counterparts. This could be over their food, their favorite toys, or even you. It will be important to give them correct training to teach them not to be aggressive towards you. They should be able to socialize better with others, too. But the best way to find out if your prospective puppy will be the right fit for your home is to do some proactive investigating. This can also be a great indicator of their future behavior, too. You should never force the interaction. If the puppy is reluctant to come near you and interact with you, then you will be better off choosing a different pup. Tests for your German shepherd puppy 1. Eye contact When you look directly at your puppy, does it look back at you? If your puppy stares back at you, this is showing confidence. If your puppy avoids eye contact then it may be anxious, scared, or have a vision issue. Clapping your hands This can indicate how social your puppy is. If it comes towards you and tries to interact with you, this is a great sign. This shows that the dog is eager to socialize with people. Call out to the puppy Do they come towards you at the sound of your voice? This is a fantastic sign. Pet the dog It will be important to note how the puppy interacts with your physical touch. If the puppy is affectionate and loving, this will be another great sign. If they bite or growl at you, this will likely be an indication of a bad temperament. The dog will have to be trained out of this. Play ball Bring a ball with you when you meet your puppy. Roll this towards the dog and see how the puppy interacts with it. Does the puppy follow the ball? Bring it back to you? Or does the dog keep the ball for itself? Puppies that are more dominant will keep the ball for themselves. They will also be reluctant to give the toy back to you. A more submissive puppy is likely to be frightened of the ball coming towards them. A more independent dog will likely show very little interest, if they show any at all. Puppies with an even temperament will show some interest in the ball, will play with it, but will also be willing for you to play a part of the game without showing any aggression. Searching for a more sociable dog? Keep an eye out for the puppy that brings the ball right back to you and asks you to play more. This puppy will be a fantastic candidate for training as well as other exercises. Roll the puppy When the puppy has come over to you, you can try to gently roll them onto their back, then hold them in place. Watch how the puppy reacts to you. Do they relax under your touch, or do they resist you? A dominant puppy will be more likely to resist you. It could even try to bite you or growl at you. An even-tempered puppy will resist at first, but will submit to you after a short time. Pick up your puppy You can physically pick up the puppy by gently holding it under its chest with an open hand. Lift the puppy up, and see what it does. Does the puppy stay relaxed or does it struggle? A struggling dog is likely to be dominant or scared. A puppy that stays perfectly relaxed is showing that it trusts you and that it is confident. This is a similar test to holding the puppy on its back. Chances are the puppy will react immediately. Any resistance or trying to pull their paw away from you could be a sign of an aggressive temperament or dominance. A puppy that accepts your actions will show a more submissive temperament. They could even lick you! Create an unexpected noise This could just be a sudden shout or banging some pots and pans. The important factor will be watching how the puppy reacts to a sudden noise. Do they show interest? Are they scared? Aggressive puppies could try and bite you and growl at you. Visit the puppy parents Most breeders will have both puppy parents in the same place. Some of them may only have the mother with the puppies because the father was on loan from a stud or a different breeder. Either way, the mother of your puppy should be with them when you pay the dogs a visit. If one of the parents appears aggressive, this could show you that you need to do some more training with your new puppy. A dog that displays more dominant tendencies will need proper training to take the edge off these behaviors. Choosing a female German Shepherd will also be a good choice. Puppies will have their off days, just like humans do. It will be important to visit your new puppy a few times and spend at least 30 minutes with them so that you can see what they will be like. They will likely prefer it to someone who only pays their puppy one visit before collecting them! This is a good indicator that the breeder wants their dogs to be matched with the right owners. If there are other people in your household who will be living with the German shepherd puppy, such as kids or a partner, you will need to bring them along, too. Your new puppy will need to get accustomed to the people it will be spending time with. It will be much easier to transition your puppy to living in your home. You should also bring some treats along for your new puppy each time you visit. These are all positive reinforcements that can allow your new puppy to get used to you and encourage them to bond with you. It will also be a good idea to bring something with you that you can leave behind for the puppy. This could be a new toy or a blanket that smells like you. This will allow the puppy to get used to your smell, which can also make the transition easier. They will also be very well acquainted with the mother of the puppies and have knowledge of the father. So your breeder should be able to help you choose the right puppy for your needs, and match the right personality to you. In summary So there you have it! Choosing the right German Shepherd puppy for your needs is certainly more challenging than it first appears. The most important goal is to choose the right dog that will fit in well with you and your family. As long as you do the proper research beforehand, you should be able to find the right dog for your home. Remember to ask the right questions when you find your breeder to make sure that they are a good person to buy a dog from. Be sure to visit your new puppy several times before you bring them home. As long as you take this responsibility seriously, you will have laid the perfect foundation for a fruitful relationship with your new puppy. May not even be aware of the breed standard. White Labradoodles, a delightful mix of Labrador and Poodle, have surged in popularity as designer dogs, making them one of the most common mixed breed dogs. Known for their pleasing aesthetics and temperament, these fluffy companions often stand out with their uniquely colored coats. What's intriguing is the white Labradoodle coat, a genetic trait that's a subject of curiosity and myth. This comprehensive guide delves into everything you need to know about this breed, from debunking misconceptions about albinism and deafness to understanding the science behind their white coat color. We'll explore how Australian Labradoodles differ from the common Labradoodle and discuss how to find a healthy white Labradoodle puppy. In addition, we will cover the topic of white Labradoodle health and genetics and compare the white Labradoodle temperament with that of the black and golden Labradoodle. If you're considering getting a white Labradoodle, this article will provide essential insights to help you make an informed decision. What is a White Labradoodle? A White Labradoodle is a specific color variation of the Labradoodle breed, characterized by its distinctive white coat. The coat color of a Labradoodle is determined by the genes inherited from its parent breeds the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle. While Labradoodles can come in various colors, including black, brown, cream, and apricot, the white coat is particularly special due to its rarity and unique aesthetic appeal. Breeding for a white Labradoodle involves carefully selecting and pairing parent dogs with desired coat colors. Reputable breeders specializing in producing white Labradoodles pay close attention to color and other important traits such as temperament and health. This ensures that the resulting puppies have the desired white coat and possess the desirable characteristics associated with both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. Obtaining a white Labradoodle from a reputable breeder can be exciting for those seeking this specific coat color. It is essential to do thorough research on potential breeders to ensure they prioritize responsible breeding practices and their dogs' well-being. Working with a reputable breeder with experience producing white Labradoodles can increase their chances of obtaining a healthy puppy with an exquisite white coat that truly stands out. Are white Labradoodles rare? White Labradoodles are not commonly found, as they are considered to be a rare breed. While Labradoodles themselves are a popular choice among dog lovers due to their hypoallergenic coats and friendly nature, the white variation is particularly sought after. The scarcity of white Labradoodles can be attributed to several factors. One reason is that the gene responsible for the white coat color is recessive, meaning both parents must carry this gene to express it in their offspring. This genetic combination is less common than other coat colors, making white Labradoodles more elusive. It's important to note that white Labradoodles should not be confused with albino dogs. Albino animals lack pigment in their skin, hair, and eyes due to a genetic condition that prevents melanin production. On the other hand, white Labradoodles have a normal amount of pigment but possess a specific gene variant that results in their unique coat color. Suppose someone desires a white Labradoodle as their pet companion. In that case, it is crucial to seek out reputable breeders who prioritize responsible breeding practices and do not exploit the rarity of this color variation for profit. By doing so, individuals can ensure they are acquiring a healthy and well-cared-for dog while supporting ethical breeding standards within the Labradoodle community. The Origin and Genetics of the White Labradoodle The enigmatic origins of the rare white Labradoodle can be explored by examining the intricate genetic factors that contribute to this captivating coat color. While Labradoodles are a crossbreed between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles, white fur in these dogs is not as common as other colors such as black or chocolate. The white coat color in Labradoodles is believed to result from a combination of genetics and selective breeding. Labradoodle puppies inherit their coat color from both parent breeds, each contributing specific genes that determine the outcome. In some cases, Labradoodles may carry a gene for coat color dilution, resulting in lighter shades such as cream or white. There is also the possibility of albino dogs within the Labradoodle lineage, although albino Labradoodles are extremely rare. Albino dogs lack pigment in their skin, hair follicles, and eyes due to a genetic mutation that affects melanin production. Understanding the genetics behind the white Labradoodle's coat color adds depth to our appreciation of this unique trait. It highlights how breeding practices and inherent genetic variations have shaped the appearance of these beloved companion animals. Through further research and exploration into the complex world of canine genetics, we can continue unraveling the mysteries surrounding this enchanting breed. Additionally, it has been observed that white Labradoodle puppies can exhibit a slightly different energy level and playfulness compared to their non-white counterparts. However, it is important to note that these observations are anecdotal and not supported by scientific research. It is essential for potential owners of Labradoodles. Health Considerations for White Labradoodles The personality and temperament of Labradoodles, including the white variety, have been extensively studied and documented. While there is a general understanding of Labradoodle traits, such as their intelligence, friendliness, and adaptability, it remains unclear whether coat color influences a dog's temperament. However, when it comes to white Labradoodles specifically, some unique behavioral traits have been observed. Moving on to health considerations for white Labradoodles, it is important to explore whether there are any specific health issues associated with this color variation. While coat color does not directly determine a dog's overall health, certain genetic factors may be more prevalent in white Labradoodles. Owners and breeders must be aware of these potential health risks to ensure the well-being and longevity of these special dogs. Some specific health issues that may be more commonly seen in white Labradoodles include: Skin sensitivity: White Labradoodles tend to have more sensitive skin than other colors due to a higher likelihood of pink or light pigmentation. This can make them prone to sunburns or skin irritations if proper precautions are not taken. Hearing problems: Reports suggest that some white Labradoodles may be more susceptible to hearing impairments than their counterparts with darker coats. Regular ear check-ups and appropriate care can help prevent or manage such issues. Responsible breeding practices are essential to ensure the well-being and longevity of a white Labradoodle. Breeders should prioritize genetic diversity and avoid linebreeding or inbreeding which can increase the risk of inherited diseases. Additionally, regular veterinary check-ups, proper nutrition tailored to the dog's needs, regular exercise, and mental stimulation through training or interactive play sessions should all be part of an owner's commitment to maintaining their white Labradoodle's optimal health. While coat color does not directly influence a dog's temperament, some unique behavioral traits have been observed in white Labradoodles. When it comes to health considerations, although no specific health issues are exclusive to white Labradoodles, certain genetic factors may be more prevalent in this color variation. Grooming is essential to maintaining the appearance and health of a white Labradoodle's coat. Regular brushing helps prevent matting and tangling of their curly fur while reducing shedding. Bathing should be done as needed, using mild shampoos that are suitable for their sensitive skin. Additionally, it is important to regularly check their ears for any signs of infection or wax buildup. Diet plays a crucial role in keeping a white Labradoodle healthy and energized. Additionally, socializing white Labradoodles with various people and animals in different environments can help them become well-rounded and confident individuals. Establishing consistent rules and boundaries and providing mental and physical stimulation through activities and exercises is important. Investing time and effort in early training and socialization can greatly contribute to a well-behaved and happy white Labradoodle. Reputable breeders will have proper documentation on the puppy's lineage and health clearances for the Labrador Retriever and Poodle parent breeds and provide information on how they socialize their puppies. Labradoodles are beautiful and popular dogs. There are more than 15 different coat colors possible for a Labradoodle! So read on and find out if the white Labradoodle is the dog for you. What is a White Labradoodle? This term refers to when two breeds combine to accentuate the best traits in both breeds. The Labradoodle stemmed from the need for an allergy-friendly guide dog. Labrador Retrievers, on the other hand, make perfect guide dogs. But their fur sheds and holds dander that aggravates allergies. That makes it difficult for anyone who has allergies in their household. In the s, breeders combined Poodles and Labrador Retrievers to solve this problem. This resulted in the Labradoodle that we know today, and are still popular as guide dogs and therapy dogs. But that is unlikely, as albinism is very rare in both pets and people. All color found on dogs comes from two different pigments. As dogs grow, cells called melanocytes add these two melanins to their hair. There is still pigmentation in the nose and they eyes, but none in the fur. Pigmentation in the eyes and nose is what officially qualifies white Labradoodles according to the ALAA. This pigmentation also sets white Labradoodles apart from dogs with albinism. Albinism is the complete lack of pigmentation. White Poodles get their color or lack of it from the S gene. Labradors do not carry the S gene. Although very occasionally they might have small areas of the white trim in their coat. So, white Labradoodles always inherit their color from their Poodle parent. White Labradoodle Temperament It can be difficult to pinpoint the personality of a mixed breed dog. Both breeds are known as family-friendly dogs. Labradoodles can be high-energy and friendly. How friendly they are will depend on whether they take after the Poodle or Labrador parent more. Poodles seem to be a bit more aloof, whereas Labradors are often extremely friendly. You can help temperament with proper socialization, adequate exercise and lots of attention. White Labradoodle Health Every breed of dog will have their own health risks. Many issues that could arise are genetic. DNA tests are available for this gene, and it takes two faulty genes to pass the disorder along. Good breeders will have their dogs tested to avoid breeding two carriers together. Sebaceous Adenitis Sebaceous glands can become inflamed, affecting skin and hair follicle lubrication. This results in itchy skin, scaling, hair loss and even infection. At present, there is no DNA test. But you should talk to your breeder about whether they have seen it in the lineage. Epilepsy Poodles can suffer from idiopathic epilepsy, which is inherited. Here are some of the health concerns that they share. Some cases are mild, requiring only proper diet and exercise to maintain. Whereas, other cases are more severe, and may even need surgery to help. Bloat Sometimes with large dogs, their stomachs can grow too large with gas and rotate. This hinders their ability to release the gas. And also restricts blood supply. If this happens, it is life-threatening and an emergency vet visit is necessary. Progressive Retinal Atrophy This is a genetic disease that almost always leads to blindness. Luckily, a DNA test can identify this. Good breeders should be able to provide proof of testing for the parents. But one study suggests that it depends on the disease more than the pedigree. Labrador Health Issues The only major concern outside what Labradors share with Poodles is their risk of cancer. While Labradors are not the highest at-risk breed for cancer, the issue is still there. But with early detection, it could be manageable. If a dog lacks these melanocytes, it will also lack the proper hearing cells. This will result in a high chance of congenital deafness. This makes your White Labradoodle more susceptible to poor eyesight than other colors. Their white coat also means they likely have sensitive skin. Their time in the sun should be closely monitored. Labradors are shedding dogs, so your Labradoodle may leave lots of hair around. Their fur is thick, coarse and double-layered. They have a water-resistant outer layer and an insulating undercoat. They have a single layer coat. It could have the thick, curly wool-like fur of a Poodle. They may also have loose or no curls, with a lot more shedding. Labradoodle Coat Care You will need to brush your Labradoodle once or twice weekly. This may even mean daily brushing. They will need regular clipping to keep the coat from matting. A fine-tooth comb, brush, and detangling spray will help you care for them. White Labradoodle Coat Care As with most things, white means even more maintenance. White fur may mean your dog has sensitive skin. Choose a gentle shampoo, and keep full baths to a minimum. If your white Labradoodle gets dirty, wait until the dirt is dry and brush it out. You can also use cleaning cloths to remove stains. Pay special attention to areas prone to staining: around the eyes and mouth. Selecting a Reputable Breeder Lastly, regardless of coat color or breed, you should always look for a reputable breeder. Good breeders work towards the betterment of the species and the breed. They take important qualities such as health, temperament and more into account. These breeders are looking for quick money. So they take advantage of the popularity of designer breeds like Labradoodles. They do this by over-breeding dogs. That means the temperament of a Labradoodle from a backyard breeder can vary wildly. Properly bred Labradoodles are a little easier to predict. A white Labradoodle puppy may not be the most low maintenance dog that you can find. But there is a reason that this breed is so loved. White Labradoodle Genetics The two most common ways white Labradoodles get their fur color is through the spotting gene, or albinism. Cream or chalk can look close to white under some types of lighting but will always have more warmth than a pure white. When it comes to Labradoodle coat genetics, there are two main color pigments: eumelanin and phaeomelanin. Eumelanin in its purest form is basic black and phaeomelanin in its purest form is basic red. Other genes can interact with these pigments to transform basic black or red into other colors along each color spectrum. One of these genes that can create a white coat is known as the S gene. It is a dominant gene, so a Labradoodle puppy only needs to inherit it from one parent in order to show a white coat. Poodles carry the S gene, but Labradors do not. Dilute Gene Sometimes, Labradoodles can appear white if they have the dilute gene over a yellow coat. The dilute gene, as its name suggests, will dilute the pigment in a normal coat color, making it paler. Some examples include the champagne Labrador, which is quite controversial for some people! Labradoodles with dilute coats may look white. But, they may also be at higher risk of certain health problems, like alopecia. Premature Greying Gene Poodles also carry the greying G gene. Like the S gene, the G gene is dominant. So, puppies only need to inherit it from one parent to express it. If a Labradoodle puppy inherits this gene, the pigment in their coat may begin to fade, or turn grey early in life. Depending on their original coat color, premature greying could cause the affected hairs to appear white. Albino Labradoodles Albino dogs have absolutely no pigment anywhere on their skin or fur. They are incapable of producing it. Albinism is incredibly rare. A dog can look albino in every way and still not be an albino dog. Sometimes, an extreme form of coat color dilution can also cause an albino appearing dog. Some breeds such as the Doberman can also have an albino mutation that causes only parts of their body to be true albino. Albino Labradoodles often have pink paws, nose, lips, and skin around their eyes. Their eyes themselves may also have a pink or red tinge. You can get your dog tested for the albino gene if you suspect they may be albino. White Fur from Health Problems The final way that Labradoodles can get white fur is from certain health issues. Two major issues that can cause white fur are vitiligo and stress. Vitiligo Vitiligo is a relatively rare skin disease that causes pigment loss. Vitiligo in dogs often starts in young adulthood. It usually shows up first on the face and then spreads to other areas of the body. If one parent dog is a yellow Labrador Retriever, there may be a slightly higher risk of Labradoodle puppies inheriting the gene for vitiligo. Systemic Stress or Anxiety Labradoodles are clever, social, and active dogs. But, this means they can be prone to anxiety and stress. Underlying stress is unlikely to cause widespread uniform coat color change. White Labradoodle Temperament As long as your Labradoodle gets their white coloring from a genetic cause, such as the spotting gene, their temperament will be the same as any other Doodle. They will be clever, friendly, energetic, and affectionate. Choose a reputable breeder in order to get Labradoodle puppies with the best possible temperament. You can also ask to meet the parent dogs bred, to get an idea of how your puppy will grow up to be. Are White Labradoodles Healthy? For instance, dogs with albinism will need extra care when out in the sun. They are at higher risk of issues like sunburn, which can also increase their risk of tumors or skin cancer. Albino dogs can also experience vision problems, due to their sensitive eyes. Studies have suggested that white dogs can have a higher risk of deafness and hearing-related health problems. And, as we mentioned earlier, white Doodles with the dilute gene can suffer from alopecia. Other than this, a white Labradoodle will be prone to the same health problems as its parent breeds. Luckily, choosing a puppy from a reputable breeder can help to minimise health issues later in life. Stay away from puppy mills and backyard breeders. Your breeder can use these test results to create statistical models, and better predict coat color inheritance in litters. Some breeders may just choose to put you on a waiting list and let you know when a white Doodle comes up. But, chalk and cream can actually occur on a color spectrum, with some variants appearing lighter or darker. Remember that the Poodle is the only Labradoodle parent with a white coat color as a standard, show approved color. So, you can also try to choose breeders that are using white Poodles for their Labradoodle puppies. Above all, make sure they health test the parent dogs, and show you clean health certificates. Do You Have a White Labradoodle? The white Labradoodle is a less common coat color, but one that many people love. We would love to hear about them! References and Resources Chapelle, J. The characteristics that the Labradoodle inherits are through the dominant genes or a cross between certain characters of the parent breed. When it comes to the color of the coat, there are two pigments that play a key role — phaeomelanin and eumelanin. Eumelanin is responsible for the black color and pheomelanin is responsible for the red color. When these two pigment genes interact with other pigment genes, it changes these basic black and red colors into different shades. One of these other genes is the S gene, also called the spotting gene or the self gene. The S gene is a dominant gene, so even if the puppy inherits it from one parent, it will still develop a snowy white coat. And since Labradors do not have an S gene, if the Labradoodle puppy is white, that means it inherited the color from its Poodle parent. A white coat is essentially the result of a lack of melanin or pigment in the Labradoodle. However, white Labradoodles still have pigment in their nose and eyes, which is what distinguishes them from a dog with albinism. Most of the time a cross between a light-colored Labrador Retriever with a white, cream , or yellow coat and a lighter-colored Poodle with a white, silver, apricot, or gray coat results in a white-colored Labradoodle. Albinism Albinism is a genetic condition that affects pigment production. A dog with albinism will have absolutely no pigment production and thus no color or white color on their skin and fur. Albino Labradoodles will have a pink nose, paws, and lips. Even the skin surrounding the eyes is pink. If you suspect the white coat of your dog is because of the albino gene, you can get your genetically tested. However, albinism is quite rare. So, if your Labradoodle has a white coat, it is most likely due to the S gene and not albinism. Alternatively, a dog may appear to be albino because of significant coat color dilution, and some breeds only have parts of their bodies affected by the albino gene such as the Doberman. Dilute Gene There are often instances where a Labradoodle may appear white, but it is not. This happens due to the presence of dilute genes. The dilute gene will dilute a pigment and make the color paler, especially with lighter colors. So, a yellow, cream, or apricot coat combined with a dilute gene will appear white. One example of a dilute gene is the Champagne Labrador. Labradoodles with the dilute gene may have beautiful coat colors, but it also makes them more prone to health conditions like alopecia. The G gene is dominant, so inheriting it from either of its parent breeds is enough for the expression of the gene. This may result in graying or whitening in the case of light-colored coats of the coats. Thus, a light-colored Labradoodle with the G gene may develop a white coat early in life. Health Problems Apart from genetics, there are other factors that can determine the coat color of your dog. Here are the two major health concerns that can cause your Labradoodle to have a white coat. Vitiligo Vitiligo is a skin disease that can affect many dog breeds. It is typically hereditary and affects the pigment in the skin. The disease starts at an early age, just after puppyhood. The dog starts losing color from the face first, followed by loss of color in other areas of the body. There is a higher risk of a Labradoodle inheriting this disease if the Labrador Retriever parent has a yellow coat. Systemic Stress or Anxiety While Labradoodles are highly intelligent and social animals, like all other dog breeds, they are also prone to stress and anxiety. And although stress is unlikely to cause a change in coat color, it can impact the health and shine of the coat. Are White Labradoodles Healthy? Usually, there is no correlation between the coat color of a dog and its health. A running white Labradoodle For white Labradoodles, whether their white coat is genetically inherited or is the result of a health condition will determine their overall health. One of the most common genetic health problems of white dogs is albinism, which also includes several complications. Albino dogs thus need extra care and protection. If your white Labrador has albinism, he will not be able to tolerate the hot rays of the sun and will have to be protected. These tumors can remain benign or develop into cancerous cells. The absence of pigment in the eyes also makes their eyes more sensitive. Studies have also shown that albino dogs are at a higher risk of developing deafness and other hearing-related health problems. White Labradoodles may also develop partial or complete deafness because of lack of pigmentation, but this is quite rare. Labradoodles, and any other dog breed, with a darker shade of coat are known to lose their colors because of genetic or health-related issues. Labradoodle hair regrows fairly quickly, give it 8 weeks and you will be back to fluffy. With dogs with darker coats, there is always the risk of the puppy developing a lighter shade as it grows up. However, dogs with lighter coats are not susceptible to such changes. The temperament of a Labradoodle will be a reflection of how the puppy is raised, socialized, and treated and not the color of his coat. F3 Labradoodle [Complete Guide] with Photos Since it is a crossbreed, the characteristics of the parent breeds also play a very important role in the temperament of the dog. Apart from a few quirks inherited from the parent breeds, Labradoodles are generally affectionate, lovely, and friendly. They usually do not display aggressive tendencies and are friendly and warm to strangers, children, and other dogs. It thus becomes very important to choose a good responsible and ethical breeder to get your pet from. Meeting the parent dogs gives you further insight into the temperament that the puppy may develop. Training A White Labradoodle Labradoodles are an enthusiastic, playful, and energetic dog breed. They are eager to please their humans and smother them with love and affection. However, it is important to start training Labradoodles from an early age to ensure the development of positive characteristics. A white Labradoodle with tongue out after rigorous training! Exercise and training are a must for any dog, and especially for highly energetic dog breeds like the Labradoodle. Early socialization and positive reinforcement are some of the best ways to train a Labradoodle puppy to ensure good behavior and a balanced temperament. Most Labradoodles need to be groomed every weeks. Usually, this is enough to keep the tangles and knots away and preserve the natural shine and gloss of their coats. Dog grooming tools for your dog. However, with a white coat, the grooming requirement changes. The white wavy and curly coat will require regular bathing and brushing, more often than other colored coats. This is also because the white coat is more easily stained and even a small patch of mud will look very unpleasant. Other than that, hair clipping every weeks is also a must. You should also consider taking your dog to a professional groomer every few months. Owning any dog comes with its set of responsibilities and expenses, and owning a Labradoodle is no different. White Labradoodles also have certain specific health concerns that you will need to be prepared to handle. If you are someone who stays away from home too often, owning a white Labradoodle may not be a good decision for you. Many breeders provide Labradoodle puppies but not all follow ethical breeding practices. Make sure you avoid puppy mills and backyard breeders at all costs; they are in it only for monetary gains and breed for quantity and not quality. A panting white Labradoodle rests after an intense play at the park! When buying a white Labradoodle from a breeder , research the breeder properly. Make sure they follow ethical breeding practices, are registered with a Labradoodle organization, and are experienced with the breed. Some of the Labradoodle organizations to look for are: Australian Labradoodle Association of America Worldwide Australian Labradoodle Association Australian Labradoodle Club of America These organizations make sure the breeders follow ethical breeding practices and that the parent dogs used in the breeding programs are of sound health. You can ask the breeder for genetic coat testing of the parent dogs to determine the possibility of having a white-colored puppy. And remember that the S gene comes from the Poodle parent. So, there is a higher chance of a white Labradoodle if the Poodle parent had a white coat rather than the Labrador Retriever parent. However, even with genetic testing, there is still no guarantee of a white Labradoodle. But, you can have your name on the wishlist of breeders so that whenever a white Labradoodle comes along, you will be contacted. Conclusion White Labradoodles are rare but an absolute joy to have around. However, like any other dog, owning a white Labradoodle is a big responsibility. Payments Labrdadoodles require trimming about four times a year. This coat usually requires trimming two to three times a year. All allergy and asthma friendly labradoodles have a coat change from puppy to adult usually between months of age. During their coat change it is recommended that you groom them daily. The coat change can last anywhere from a week to several weeks. This is usually the time when owners decide that their beautiful furry doodle needs a shorter look. Not all Labradoodles are Allergy and Asthma friendly. They have had an extremely high success rate so far! We do recommend that if you have the opportunity to meet one of these wonderful dogs in person that you should check to see if you have any reactions before you make your decision in purchasing your new puppy. We recommend that any family or person who suffers from dog related allergies or asthma should look into a Wool coated Labradoodle as they have the highest success rate. Not all breeders are experienced in selecting coat types so make sure that you find a breeder who not only knows the look but also the correct texture of the coat type you are looking for. Because the breed is still in the development stages we are still are seeing some variations within the three coat types themselves. Also your fleece coats while over all are softer than your wool coats in texture they still have some texture variation within the fleece coat type. The Australian Labradoodle requires varying degrees of grooming depending on their coat type. A light trimming might be required with scissors but usually not. This coat usually requires trimming one-two times a year. The Micro Fine Fleece Supper soft and fine texture in wavy or spiraling coat is an allergy and asthma friendly coat, if kept well groomed. This coat also requires trimming about three-four times a year. The Cotton Wool Super dense curly-straight coat with a softer texture than the original wool or loose wool coats This coat is reminiscent of a giant cotton ball when groomed out and is so dense that it almost keeps it self standing straight up. White Labradoodle Temperament White Labradoodles have a lively and friendly temperament. They are a great addition to families as they are very gentle and get along well with children. White Labradoodles are often described as being outgoing, playful, curious and eager to please. They are a very intelligent breed and respond very well to training from an early age. As they are a mixed breed dog, their temperament can be more like a Poodle or more like a Labrador Retriever. At the end of the day, coat color does not impact upon temperament. There is no evidence that a white coated Labradoodle would have a different personality or temperament from Labradoodles with other coat colors. There are many factors that affect the lifespan of a White Labradoodle including size, gender, generation and whether they are desexed or intact. These variables mean they can have shorter or longer lifespans than the average. The American Bulldog is a descendant of a generic bulldog type of dog breed brought into the region that is now the Southern United States by working-class immigrants many years ago. These were all-around working dogs used by small farmers and ranchers for several tasks around the farm. They were often found working as catch dogs, stock dogs, and overall farm guardians. When feral pigs were introduced to the New World, they had no natural predators and the population quickly grew out of control. In addition to their farm duties, the settlers found the bulldog-type dog to be the best solution they had for dealing with it. So, the bulldog continued to thrive, especially in the South. Johnson and Alan Scott that we have what we know today as the American Bulldog. Modern American Bulldogs can still be found working as all-around utility dogs, farm dogs, catch dogs, cattle drovers, and more. They can also be found competing in dog sports, working as a guardian, police, or military dog, and are also popular as a family pet. This dog breed is a sweetheart with a gentle, fun-loving nature. The American Bulldog is affectionate and adores their families. They also love children and tend to be good with other animals. American Bulldogs can have a high prey drive, so you will want to make sure you introduce and socialize them properly with other small animals in the household. Due to their protective nature, they can be aloof towards strangers and strange dogs, especially when they are younger. Early socialization can help them be more comfortable navigating their guardian instincts. Overall, this dog breed tends to be confident, social, and are most at ease and relaxed when they are with the people they love. American Bulldogs are an emotional dog breed and thrives on human attention and affection, so they tend to bond strongly with their owners and may come across as clingy sometimes. They will also often convince themselves that they are lap dogs regardless of their size, so make sure you are ready for a lot of love and cuddles with your American Bulldog, drool and all! The American Bulldog is a moderately adaptable dog breed. They are strong, high-energy working dogs that love being around their favorite humans. This makes them better suited to larger homes with space for them to run. They are not generally a good fit for apartment living, but they can adapt as long as they get more than enough exercise and attention. Because they do tend to bond strongly with their owners and want to be near them, they do not tend to do well with long periods of time alone. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold, but can adapt to well to most climates. There are some health issues that can be found in specific genetic lines and are not common to the breed overall, but these can be ruled out with genetic tests. Some potential health conditions to be aware of in general with the American Bulldog include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid disorders, kidney disorders, bone cancer, and eye-related issues like ectropion, entropion, and cherry eye. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help allay potential concerns. American Bulldogs are highly trainable and eager to please, so they are a good fit for owners of any experience level, including first-time dog owners. They can have a stubborn streak, so a first-time dog owner may want to consider enrolling in puppy training classes. As with any dog breed, early and ongoing training and socialization are important for your American Bulldog puppy to grow into a well-rounded, and a well-behaved, dog. This dog breed has a short coat that is generally smooth. Common coat colors are white and predominately white with patches of brindle, black, or red. More coat color patterns are emerging and becoming more common like all shades of brindle, fawn, brown, red, and more. The American Bulldog is relatively low maintenance and easy to groom and they are light to moderate shedders. They only require a bath as needed. But, you will need to be prepared to deal with some extra drool! Floppy ears tend to trap moisture and dirt, which can lead to ear infections. The ideal dental care for dogs is using an enzyme toothpaste or brushing their teeth every day. Dental hygiene chews or treats, a specially-formulated dental care diet, and more can be used to supplement your dental care efforts. The American Bulldog is an athletic and high-energy dog breed. They love daily walks and plenty of playtime outside. They may even enjoy plenty of other activities with you like swimming, hiking , and more. With their working dog background, this dog breed does need a job to do in order to stay happy and healthy. They also tend to be a good candidate for dog sports like obedience, weight pulling, the Iron Dog competition, and more. Managing allergies with Golden Retrievers begins with awareness of known allergens and preventive measures. Allergens like pollen, smoke, and certain pet dander can affect allergic responses, so aim to keep the air inside and outside the home as clean as possible. Avoiding areas that contain heavy pollen or smoke can help. Regularly vacuum and dust to rid the home of allergens. Allergic reactions to pet dander in Golden Retrievers can also be reduced by brushing and grooming the animal regularly. Bathe your pet to remove dander and dust. For optimal health and wellbeing, Golden Retrievers need a complete and balanced diet to meet their nutritional needs. It is important to choose an age-appropriate formula that is free from by-products, fillers, and low-quality carbohydrates. Your Golden Retriever should be fed a diet of high-quality, non-allergenic proteins, such as fish, eggs, turkey, lamb, and chicken. The diet also should include slow-release carbohydrates, such as oats, brown rice, potatoes, and sweet potatoes. Preparing for a new Golden Retriever should begin before you even bring your pup home! You should also research where you can find quality medical care and buy a few months' worth of preventative health products prior to bringing your pup home. Make sure you plan out your route beforehand to ensure you have access to shaded areas and a source of water. Additionally, you should determine what is the optimal running distance and speed for your pup. Both over-exertion and under-exertion can lead to physical fatigue or injury, so it's important to find a comfortable balance. Depending on the climate in your area, avoid running in excessively hot temperatures, as this can be dangerous for your pup. Do Golden Retrievers in South Pasadena make good family dogs?
