The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is here which is why it's important to take some time to reflect on disaster preparedness. As unlikely as it may seem, a disaster can strike at any moment. Whether it's a fire, tornado, hurricane, flood, or blizzard, it's critical to be prepared and have a plan in place. Unfortunately, pets are sometimes unintentionally left out of their owners' disaster preparedness plans which makes it difficult to know what to do with them during an emergency. Luckily, you can plan ahead for your pets using these tips: Listen to your veterinarian Make sure your pet wears a collar with up to date information on it, get them microchipped, and have them vaccinated. These recommendations will come in handy during a disaster and help you avoid any potential pitfalls, such as being unable to get into a shelter with an unvaccinated pet or losing them during an evacuation. If possible, take your pet's medical records with you and attach their rabies tag to their collar. Find out which shelters allow pets Do some research into where you can safely evacuate with your pet during a state of emergency before a disaster occurs. Your local police department can typically give you this information. If not, they'll likely be able to point you in the direction of someone who can. I thought I would never feel about another dog the way I felt about my Julie but it was not long before I fell in love with that sweet, sweet girl who was also with me for 13 years. Everyone loved Daisy, she would go up to people and do that lean into thing, a Golden thing, and they would just laugh and pet her. GRRAND was contacted by a shelter that feared bringing Athena and her pups into their shelter, because they were going to have to euthanize them all upon intake due of lack of space!! It took a village, but they are all safe, bathed and in foster homes! They all apparently lived in a barn stall, never leaving it, and standing on a ton of feces, which they were covered in when they arrived. Some of the pups are terrified, having lived in the barn stall, with no socialization, all their lives and are going to need families with a lot of patience! Kane known as Charles and Penelope are in the same foster home and here is what she has to say about them: "They are definitely more settled in now and some personality is starting to slowly show. Getting used to people is completely new for them and it shows, as you know. However, they both get excited, happy and eager when any of my dogs come around. Miss P or Charles have no issues with appetite, wrestling with each other, tolerate baths and the more exposure to odd things they have, I think they will turn into a very sweet and great dogs. Be in the lookout for the famous side eye he throws! He loves belly rubs and takes better to being held than his sister. Interested applicants should expect these puppies to be big, and you should be prepared for that sweet and independent Great Pyrenees personality… to know the Great Pyr breed is to love them, but they are not Goldens, and we suggest you do some research on this beautiful breed before applying! These puppies all will need a secure above ground fenced yard as Great Pyrs love to be in their yard to protect and patrol, and this happens best when they are in a secure space! GRRAND policies stipulate a few important things that may stop you from applying, and here are 2 big ones- A: GRRAND will NOT place a puppy under the age of 6 months with families with children under 6 yrs old B: Any applicant with children under the age of 16, will require a home with direct access to a securely fenced yard… meaning direct access to the yard from the home… so this means no apartments or condos. As with all puppies, they will need a home where someone is home most of the time as they need to be fed regularly, and let to go outside consistently and constantly ALL DAY LONG so potty training can be a breeze. They will be looking for a home with a fenced in yard and a family with LOTS of time and patience to socialize and work with a puppy so they can grow up to be good pups! It is a lot of fun, but it is a lot of work, and if you don't have the time, an active and non-stop playful puppy may not be for you! Families must understand there needs to be constant supervision as children of all ages need to learn to respect an animal and puppies, and need to be taught boundaries. Most Maltipoo litters were a product of breeding the first generation Poodle and Maltese, however, later on one Maltidoodle was crossed with the other also. What is a Tea Cup Maltipoo It is not a category of the Maltipoo but a tactic of breeders to produce tiny variants of the dogs to attract people. However, the AKC and other major kennel clubs are against such practices as such dogs could have a lot of health ailments. Maltipoos who have a weight lesser than 5 lbs once they have grown entirely fall under this group. Temperament and Personality Most Maltipoos would be seen inheriting the intelligence of the Poodle, besides displaying the fun loving, gentle and affectionate nature of both its parents. This trait of theirs could result in separation anxiety especially when left alone for prolonged periods, making them resort to destructive activities like self-harm. They are great alarm dogs like their Poodle parent, with a sense of alertness, barking constantly to warn their owners about all that is happening around them. However, these canines lack the aggression of the Maltese and do not fit the bill of a guard dog. Like the Miniature Poodle and Maltese, the Maltipoo is also not suited for homes with kids below the age of 6 because of their small and delicate nature. Moreover, these dogs might even be snappy like their Maltese parent especially when teased or bothered by the kids. They however, share a comfortable rapport with other canines and pets even if they are not raised with them. Care Exercise Though active and energetic, the Maltese Poodle mix would do well with a moderate amount of exercise, needing a brisk walk twice a day, coupled with sufficient playtime outside or even within the house. If their physical needs are met well, these small-sized dogs would perfectly adjust to apartment living. Grooming They shed less just like their parents, needing a little amount of grooming. Brush two to three times in a week using a pin or slicker brush, apt for their thick coat, helping to keep their hair soft and clean. If your Maltipoo has attained the curly coat of the Poodle, then it should be taken to a professional groomer in every four or six weeks. Their coat needs to be clipped one or two times in a year while the hair located on their head around their eyes and ears need frequent trimming to ensure cleanliness, besides preventing the formation of mats and tangles. Other hygiene needs include brushing their teeth twice or thrice a week, trimming the nails one or two times a month as well as cleaning its eyes to avoid tear stains and ears on a routine basis. Bathe your Maltipoo on a monthly or whenever its coat is soiled and dirty, using warm water and vet-approved dog shampoo. Health Problem Some of the health problems faced by the Maltidoodle include White Shaker Syndrome characterized by body tremors, uncoordinated gait, and rapid movement of the eyes , patellar luxation, epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, Legg Calve Perthes disease and portosystemic shunt abnormal blood flow between the body and liver. Training They are intelligent and smart, they could take to the Maltese in terms of stubbornness, hence needing to be handled with firmness. Crate training the Maltipoo puppies are a mandate to lessen their pangs of separation anxiety. Make the crate warm and comfortable by putting their choicest belongings. Do not force them in against their wishes and never use the crate as a mode of punishment. Note: While selecting a crate do not go for spacious and big ones as that could put your dog at a stress. A 19 inch crate size would be aptly suited for your Maltipoo. If you desire to put it in the crate since its puppy days then go for ones with dividers so that you can block a portion of it when it is a puppy and then eventually remove it as it grows up. Socialization training since their puppy days is a must, which should involve exposing the Maltipoo to a variety of situations, the good and the bad. In this way, these dogs would be able to have a control over their barking instincts and not yell at anything and everything they come across. Feeding Give them good quality dry dog food devoid of any artificial colorings or additives. You can also add homemade food but in measured amounts. Morkie vs. The Morkie is high at barking and even yappier than the Maltipoo. Yes, a genuinely black Maltipoo is exceptionally rare. While poodles commonly come in black , white, apricot, grey, red, or brown, the Maltese breed does not. Typically, Maltese are white. But a purebred Maltese is never black. That said, there are a few almost purebred Maltese that have blacks coats. However, most Maltipoo puppies have a black poodle parent and a white Maltese parent, which means they may not stay black. In part, this is because poodles have a progressive greying gene that causes their coats to lighten as they mature. As we mentioned, though, a truly black Maltipoo is exceptionally rare. Maltipoos, by definition, have at least one white-coated parent, which means that even if they appear completely black as a puppy, they may show other coat colors later on. So, if you adopted a black Maltipoo thinking it will stay black forever, you might be disappointed. Temperament And Care When it comes to care and temperament, black Maltipoos are just like any other color or Maltipoo. Coat Care Breeders breed Maltipoos to be hypoallergenic and hope to produce a poodle-like coat, which is closer to human hair than it is to fur. Sometimes, Maltipoo coats still trigger allergies because Maltese dogs do have fur, not hair. That said, Maltese are considered low or non-shedders. Regardless of whether your Maltipoo is furry or hairy, it will have a curly coat that needs brushing several times a week to prevent tangles and matting.
