Signs of viral, bacterial infections or cancer can include change in sleeping patterns along with some of the following: Bathroom accidents inside the house Change or loss of appetite Not playing as frequently. By Dr. Rania Gollakner on Feb. One of the first things your puppy needs to learn is a sleep schedule. Depending on the breed of dog, their age, and their activity during the day, puppies sleep a lot —anywhere from hours per day. As puppies get older, they alternate between sleeping and bursts of energy. Where Should a Puppy Sleep at Night? Your puppy needs to have their own sleeping space. A properly sized crate is useful for sleep training, and your pet will soon learn that this is where to go for a quiet and safe place to rest. Bonus: Teaching your dog to sleep in the crate also helps with potty training. The crate should be a comfortable and warm place. For at least the first few weeks, it should be placed in your bedroom where you sleep. Remember that your puppy is in a new home, away from his mom and siblings, and those first few nights will be scary! A scared puppy will have trouble falling asleep. How to Prepare a Puppy for Bed Creating a routine will help your puppy know what will happen next and what behavior you expect. Make sure your puppy has eaten his last meal of the day at least three hours before bedtime. This gives him enough time to digest and use the bathroom before bed. Take a walk and have a final, gentle playtime about an hour before bed. Once you put your puppy in the crate to sleep, you should either go to sleep or pretend to go to sleep. If you are still up, active, and making noise, your puppy will want to join you. Creating a cozy and comfortable bed will also prepare your puppy for sleep. If possible, put a blanket or something with your scent in the crate with him. If that is not possible, a soft, warm blanket will still offer some comfort. Choose a dog bed for the crate that has raised sides so your puppy will feel cradled and protected. There are also toys designed to mimic another dog, such as the Snuggle Puppy , that can be a soothing toy for your puppy to cuddle. As always, use your best judgment when choosing items to put in the crate with your puppy; you do not want to put anything in the crate that could be a choking hazard. If your puppy just went to the bathroom but is still crying, comfort him by gently and quietly reassuring him with your voice, or quietly sitting by the crate until he falls asleep. Do not interact with your puppy in a way that gets him excited or playful. You also do not want to let him out of the crate in response to his crying. And remember: Even though you do not want to indulge his crying when he just wants attention, never punish your puppy for crying at night. When puppies are young, they need to go to the bathroom every hours. If your puppy cries during the night; is awake or unsettled; and it has been at least a few hours since he last went to the bathroom, then assume he needs to go again. Quietly take your puppy out without interacting much or playing with him. As soon as your puppy goes to the bathroom, immediately go back inside and quietly go back to bed. Leaving the crate to use the restroom should be all business—not a fun field trip. Some puppies can sleep through the night by 12 weeks old, but it could take longer for them to hold their bladders for hours through the night. Learn to Be a Morning Person Like babies, puppies will sleep when they need to sleep and wake up when they need food, water, playtime, or to go potty. Let your puppy sleep undisturbed as much as possible so they get the sleep they need. Eventually, your pet will learn your sleep routine and wake up in the morning when you do. But remember: Puppies need to go potty more frequently than adult dogs, so sleeping in might be challenging until your puppy is older. Because puppies are like babies, they will have moments of energy and being awake—and then suddenly they will be sleepy and need a nap. If your household is constantly full of noise and activity and your puppy struggles with napping during the day, consider putting your puppy in a quiet place to nap. Like a baby, your puppy may need someone to be nearby until they fall asleep. With love, patience, and a schedule, your puppy will be on their way to a great sleeping routine. She practiced companion.Help us make PetMD better Was this article helpful? We are new to the forum and relatively new bulldog owners. We adopted a 4 year old male English bully named Zeus in April. He came with no vet records or history -- apparently his previous owner just dumped him at the rescue, along with his mother and sister, and drove away! Although he's still adjusting a bit, he seems to really love us and we are totally in love with him. He's quite healthy overall, outside of a little skin infection recently he's on antibiotics. The main problem we are having is at night. He used to sleep with his mom and sister, so we imagine this is contributing to the issue. We decided not to let him sleep in our bed and bought him a doggie bed which we put right next to ours. He in no way is isolated or goes to bed alone, we put him to bed every night when we go up to bed. He's our little shadow. Some nights that's fine, but most nights he wakes up multiple times -- generally right smack in the middle of the night! We'll get a 3am wake-up a 5am wake-up and, finally, the 7am when its all over. Not so much worried about the 7am but sometimes you wanna sleep in on the weekends, ya know? He gets walked 3 times a day and has consistent access to our backyard. We pick up his water around and head to bed before midnight Sometimes when he wakes up he needs to go out to pee or poop, but often he's seemingly just attempting to get into bed. We usually take him out back, just incase he needs the bathroom bc we've also been battling an old habit of his - peeing on his bed. The whole process can take 45 minutes or more and lately he has refused to settle back down into his bed and go to sleep. In desperation one of us has slept on the couch with him around 5am even though we're giving him positive reinforcement that way. When he's on the couch with one of us he's as happy as he can be and sleeps forever. Any advice for some sleepy bulldog owners on how we might help him sleep through the night? We're willing to try most things, but really want to keep him out of our bed given his love for peeing on bedding and a desire to keep some mild boundary with him, haha. Evening Puppy Exercise Spend a good 10—20 minutes playing with your pup outside or inside a couple of times during the evening. Play a game of tug or get them interested in chasing a flirt pole. Not only will this tire them out, but it will also give them some important physical exercise. Evening Brain Games and Training Use the commercials during your evening television shows to practice some basic training cues with your puppy. Not only does this work their brains and take the edge off, but it builds your relationship with your puppy and promotes a solid training foundation. A puppy's attention span is pretty short, so keep training sessions short and sweet and spread them out throughout the day. Ditch the regular food bowl and use a puzzle feeder for your puppy's evening meal. Below are some of my favorite food puzzles and interactive feeders. They're fun for dogs and tricky enough to engage their brains, yet not so difficult that a dog will become frustrated and give up. I recommend starting with the West Paw Toppl featured below for your puppy's first interactive feeder , as the opening is wider than a Kong toy — making it easier to de-stuff and for you to stuff and then clean afterward! As your puppy is successful with easier stuffed toys, they can move up to more difficult puzzles! You can see my puppy Fozzie Bear going to town on his Toppl toy during crate acclimation in this video: West Paw Toppl Interactive Feeder Available at: Available at: Difflife Snuffle Mat This snuffle mat provides a variety of hiding spots for dry food or treats, encouraging your dog to use their nose to find their meal and helping to slow down eating. The repetitive nature of these things is self-soothing to your puppy much how activities like knitting are for us. The snuffle mat I recommended above is a great way to work their nose indoors, or you can scatter their food in the grass of your yard for them to sniff out. Freeze your puppy's meal in their Toppl to make it last longer or use a licking mat smeared with a tiny bit of peanut butter or wet food for a good lick session. Hyper Pet IQ Treat Lick Mat Spread a bit of your dog's wet food, peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, or low-fat greek yogurt on this mat to provide a soothing enrichment activity. Take your puppy out for a bathroom break as late as possible — ideally, the last person to bed should also take your pup to their potty spot. This helps empty them out, decreasing the chance of them needing to go in the middle of the night. Keep this last potty break calm and boring. You don't want your sleepy puppy finding their second wind! On this note, consider your puppy's evening mealtime. You don't want to feed your puppy too late in the evening that they need to go 2 in the middle of the night. However, if you feed them too early, they may be hungry at bedtime and that can make them restless. One way to prevent late-night hunger is to use food puzzles with small "snack-sized" portions of food as their pre-bedtime enrichment. When it comes to leaving water in your puppy's crate, I always recommend free access to water at all times. Water is a "primary resource" — meaning your puppy needs it to survive. And there are some medical conditions that require access to drinking water at all times. But, if your puppy is waking up continually during the night because they need to urinate, speak with your veterinarian to first rule out medical reasons such as a urinary tract infection and then discuss with them whether restricting access to water before and during the night is a good choice for your puppy. Keeping a puppy potty log can really help you determine your puppy's natural potty schedule, which can help you adjust feeding times to increase longer sleep time at night. Download our free potty log template. PRO TIP: It can be helpful to set an alarm for yourself during the night to wake up and take your puppy for a quick potty break. It's all about being proactive — with an alarm, your puppy won't wake up feeling like they're ready to burst and start whining or crying in their crate. As they mature, your alarm can be set later and later as they can physically hold it longer. For more tips on potty training, check out "How to Potty Train a Puppy. The transition from sleeping in close proximity skin-to-skin.The reviews and photos people have submitted for this product are absolutely heartwarming, you really should check them out. I like to believe that he found having a familiar scent paired with the heartbeat sound and heat pack very comforting as he learned to sleep in his crate. He certainly loved to cuddle with it, and even after he transitioned to sleeping outside of the crate once he was old enough, he still carried the Snuggle Puppy around to use as a pillow, as you can see in the inset photo. The Snuggle Puppy can last for years. Even when your dog doesn't need it at night, just take out the batteries and heating pack and your dog will still carry it around! Another important feature of the Snuggle Puppy is that it's washable just don't forget to remove the batteries first! Another Preventive Vet staff review: "Mary Berry was having a difficult time sleeping alone in her crate — our guess was that she was missing her mom and littermates. She slept so soundly with the Snuggle Puppy, we would bring it with us when visiting friends so she had a comfortable piece of home to rest with. I highly recommend the Snuggle Puppy to help your new puppy sleep through the night! If your dog's idea of "snuggling" this toy involves mouthing, chewing, or disemboweling, be sure to take the toy away from them. Batteries are very dangerous for dogs if they are swallowed. Soothing Scents for Your Puppy Using dog-appeasing pheromones also called DAP can help your puppy feel secure and calm, as these mimic the pheromones their mother emits during nursing. Pheromones work for many puppies, but not all. But there's no downside to trying it out with your pup, so it's something I regularly recommend. The Adaptil pheromone diffuser covers a large space and lasts for 30 days before needing a refill. You might even try a spritz from an Adaptil spray on bedding shortly before placing your puppy in their crate. Just one or two spritzes are all you need! Adaptil Pheromone Diffuser. Just about every breed sleeps for at least 12 hours a night, but bulldogs may need a bit longer. The amount of sleep a bulldog needs depends highly on age, but there are some key underlying genetic factors. Reason 1: All Dogs Need A Lot Of Sleep Different species of animals sleep an incredibly diverse amount of time per day, with bats sleeping as much as 20 hours a day and giraffes sleeping as little as 2! Even so, the amount that dogs sleep per day is still considered to be quite a bit compared to similar species. Unlike dogs, wolves are nocturnal and sleep only hours a day. In the process of domestication, dogs developed a diurnal sleeping pattern to match their human counterparts. Like us, all dogs sleep roughly 8 hours a night. Daily naps, on the other hand, are irregular and split throughout the day. One theory for all these extra naps is that dogs get less REM sleep during each sleep cycle. REM rapid eye movement sleep is one of two major types of basic sleep for you and your dog. It might seem unintuitive, but the deepest part of sleep is actually when we are the most active! This is the phase where dogs dream and the part that makes them feel rested in the morning. Truthfully, a good chunk of the time we think they are asleep bulldogs are simply lounging around. Some may consider their bulldogs lazy, but taking it easy is simply in their blood. English Bulldogs originated in the 13th century after pugs and mastiffs were crossed to create a breed for fighting bulls. Thankfully, bull-baiting was outlawed in England in the s, leading to bulldogs nearly becoming an extinct breed while other bully breeds grew in popularity. Devoted lovers of the sturdy breed began selecting dogs with gentle and sweet natures for the explicit purpose of making the bulldog a family pet. Bulldogs still retain their brave nature from their fighting days which can sometimes if you need a guard dog but have instead been bred for a sluggish yet sweet temperament for nearly two centuries. Accordingly, Bulldogs have been placed in the non-sporting group by the American Kennel Club and are biologically predisposed to be less active than their working counterparts. For as adorable and distinctive as their faces make them, bulldogs have a host of health issues because of it. The broad, short-snouted head shape that bulldogs have is referred to as brachycephalic. These types of dogs have difficulty with heat regulation and proper breathing, so even moderate amounts of exercise wear them out and even put them at risk for heat-related illness. Thier big head can also make it difficult to find a properly sized collar , too! As goofy and fun-loving as they are, bulldogs usually need to end playtime with a nice nap to cool off and get proper airflow. Reason 4: Young Bulldogs Need Extra Sleep To Grow Since puppies are famous for being playful and energetic, you may be wondering how on Earth they sleep hours a day. But anyone who has been around a bulldog puppy knows that they can go from running around the room to snoring at the drop of a hat- no matter what the time! According to veterinarian Jeff Warber in an interview with Yahoo! News , puppies experience rapid muscular, mental, and physical growth. This makes play and exercise important for the healthy development of a young bulldog in every way, which wears them out quickly. With all the food that they eat and the growing that they do, bulldog puppies need quite a bit of shut-eye throughout the day! Reason 5: Older Dogs Need More Sleep In its later years, a bulldog will likely sleep more as part of the aging process. Senior dogs may sleep hours a day, and even hours a day is considered normal. Even perfectly healthy elderly dogs will become significantly less active throughout the day. Bulldogs are unfortunately susceptible to sleep disorders— namely, sleep apnea. Of course, there are a few more common causes to consider before jumping to the conclusion that your dog has this issue. Reason 1: An Irregular Sleep Schedule Although your dog might not be able to read your watch, it still has a biological clock! Like most mammals, dogs have a circadian rhythm that acts as a hour timer to regulate sleep. In wild dogs, this pattern would be synchronized with the natural light pattern of the rising and setting sun. Domestic dogs may not share the same sleep patterns as humans, but we often sleep at the same time. This is fine when we have regular sleep, but life events or unexpected changes may require us to wake and sleep at odd times. All of us have to adjust our sleep-schedules every now and then, but frequent changes can be problematic for both you and your bulldog. Reason 2: Sickness A sleepy bulldog is by no means guaranteed to be sick, but lethargy is a common sign of a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Extreme tiredness is often an early sign of parvovirus or other infections. In these cases, it is often paired with other symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, abnormal appetite and sudden weight-loss. Metabolic disorders can also cause tiredness and present with a variety of symptoms. These include changes in appetite, changes in weight, and excessive thirst. There are plenty of other possible medical causes for tiredness in your pup , including anemia, poisoning, and even canine depression. Narrowing down the cause from dozens of potential health issues requires the aid of a vet for proper identification and treatment. As cute and funny as snoring can be every now and again, it can indicate sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening disorder. Sleep apnea is when a dog frequently stops breathing in their sleep and is jolted awake throughout the night. This is as scary as it is dangerous for your pup. Due to their easily obstructed airways, sleep apnea in bulldogs is so common that they are often used as models for it in studies. That said, sleep apnea is preventable in every breed. In humans and dogs alike, the biggest predictors for sleep apnea are obesity and old age. Keeping your bulldog fit can go a long way in saving its health and its sleep. Along with many others, narcolepsy, insomnia, and REM behavior disorders are all conditions your dog could face. Defined simply as a disorder that can make falling and staying asleep difficult, insomnia is a multifaceted condition. Underlying causes such as arthritis pain , nighttime incontinence, and stress are often culprits, but insomnia can be a diagnosis in and of itself. Insomnia often develops in senior dogs and can be the result of diseases such as early Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If your dog is showing signs of insomnia, a vet visit for proper diagnosis is in order. Reason 5: Neurological Conditions Poor sleep may be the result of two major neurological conditions— narcolepsy and REM sleep disorder. As opposed to sleep apnea, narcolepsy is most commonly observed in puppies. Narcolepsy is a genetic disorder that results in abnormal neurological patterns and low production of hypocretin, a hormone responsible for alertness. A narcoleptic dog will fall asleep seemingly out of nowhere, especially when excited. Often, narcolepsy is paired with another disorder known as cataplexy, which is the temporary paralysis of your dog. Narcolepsy is an incurable and life-long condition, but is neither dangerous nor uncomfortable for your pup in most circumstances. Even so, if you suspect your dog has narcolepsy, you should speak to your veterinarian for further information. REM behavior disorders have a less understood cause than narcolepsy and can develop at any age. All dogs let out a sleep-woof or twitch at times, but REM sleep disorders are visibly more extreme than this and far more likely to disrupt sleep. Below is an example of a dog with a REM movement disorder. If you were constantly running in your sleep, you would be exhausted too! REM sleep disorders may not be entirely curable, but prescribed medicine from your vet such as clonazepam can do wonders in reducing symptoms. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to help your dog get enough shut-eye. Set a Schedule Dogs may have adjusted their sleep schedules to match ours somewhat, but at the end of the day there are some key differences between the sleep of us and our canine friends. Dogs have polyphasic sleep, meaning their sleep is split up throughout the day. Usually, the best way to do this for everyone involved is for you to have a set bedtime as well. Humans have a pretty elastic sleep cycle. Giving your dog a comfortable environment before it goes to sleep is important to ensure quality of sleep and avoid interruptions. Environmental cues such as location or events can easily shape biological functions for our canine friends. Giving your bulldog a designated bed and area to sleep in may help signal to your dog that sleep time has begun. For bulldogs, overheating is an uncomfortable and disruptive possibility. Keeping them in a cool but not cold! One way to ensure they sleep at the correct temperature is to get them a specific bed. An elevated bed such as this or a dog bed with cooling gel like this can help keep your pup cool throughout the night. When their environment is dark, a dog produces melatonin to promote sleep. Keeping the room dark before and during sleep is always a good idea. Despite previous theories, this cohabitation rarely disturbed sleep and was therapeutic and psychologically healthy for both parties involved. As a brachycephalic breed, bulldogs are prone to snoring in their sleep , and can certainly slobber quite a bit. Not to mention their moderate shedding can decorate your sheets in an unwanted layer of fur. Thankfully, a protective bed cover for pets, like this great waterproof cover , can help keep your bed clean if you want your pooch to snooze with you. That said, the choice to let your dog sleep with you or not is entirely yours! As long as you can handle the snoring, sleeping with your bulldog in the room may help you both sleep better. Unfortunately, b ulldogs are also prone to heat exhaustion and breathing difficulties , so vigorous exercise is a no-go. Light to moderate exercise with plenty of water and a cool environment can not only keep your bulldog healthy but also improve its sleep! A fully exercised bulldog is a worn-out bulldog, so catching some healthy Zs and getting REM sleep is easy after a workout. Conclusion Dogs sleep a lot throughout the day due to their polyphasic sleeping patterns. Frequent naps throughout the day are to be expected with any dog, and bulldogs are particularly prone to spending much of the day napping. Of course, if your dog is acting strangely or sleeping more out of nowhere, contacting your vet is a good idea. But as long as your bulldog seems happy and healthy, let a sleeping dog lie! By: Author Jennifer Seegmiller Whether you are a first-time Bulldog owner or a long-time lover of this energetic and intelligent breed you may wonder what is normal for sleeping patterns and behaviors for your Bulldog. I did some research and reached out to other Dachshund owners and this is what I found out. Adult Bulldogs will sleep on average hours a day. Bulldog puppies will sleep hours a day in a 24 hour period. How much your Bulldog sleeps depends a lot on their personalities. Bulldogs also tend to develop sleep habits similar to their owners. If you are fit and active, your Bulldog will be also. If you are relaxed and laid-back, chances are your Bulldog will be similar to you. Continue reading to find out. Newborns generally nurse every 2 hours but even while doing so they will have their eyes shut and look as though they are eating in their sleep. As they grow, they will slowly start to spend more time awake. Around 3 weeks old they will have around hours of active time a day broken up into small spurts of energy and exploring their world. Bulldog Puppy Sleep Patterns Puppies are quickly growing and changing. They need plenty of sleep to fuel and recharge their growing bodies. From months old, Bulldog puppies will generally sleep around hours in a hour period. This includes sleeping at night and daytime naps. Your puppy will sleep in longer stretches at night but will still need to get up to relieve its small bladder and stretch. He may even have a burst of energy and seem like he wants to play. With some patience and guidance, your puppy can learn to sleep through the night by 4 months old, maybe even sooner. Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. Older puppies from around months old will sleep about hours throughout a 24 hour period. At this point, they should be more active and inquisitive during the day and will be better about sleeping through the night in hour stretches. They will also take multiple naps during the day, as well as times of rest when they appear to be just lying around, but somewhat alert as well as high energy awake time when they will want to play and train. Bulldog puppies will generally sleep through the night by about 4 months old, but it can range from 8 or 9 weeks old all the way through 6 months old. Some puppies may also go through a sleep regression when going through a growth spurt or teething. Towards the end of this article, we will discuss those in the heading sleep problems and solutions. Fun Fact: Senior dogs, as well as puppies, tend to twitch more in their sleep! This is due to a part of their brain called the Pons which regulates muscles and keeps them still while they sleep. Adult Bulldog Sleep Patterns Your adult Bulldogs will normally sleep around hours in a hr period, but more as he ages. In this study, researchers found that older and middle-aged dogs slept more during the day than young adult dogs. This was because they took more naps, not because their naps were longer. They tend to run out of energy and need to rest more often than the younger group. Older and middle-aged dogs also slept more at night than younger dogs because they had long stretches of sleep at night waking up later and woke up fewer times during the night. A big factor was how active and attentive the owners were. Bulldogs typically have a little less energy than other dog breeds. This means they may sleep more often than your other dogs if they have pet brothers and sisters. Some owners I talked to did say that their Bulldogs tend to sleep more when left home alone for long amounts of time, like when their owner is at work. This is most likely because there is no one there to engage them with play or give them a reason to get up and move around. So, as you can see their sleep schedule greatly depend on the kinds of habits you develop for your dog. Senior Bulldogs Sleep Patterns Your Bulldog is considered a senior sometime between 7 and 10 years old. At this time, you will probably start to see your dog slowly increasing the amount of time it is resting and sleeping. Senior Bulldogs will sleep hrs a day on average as they get to be years old and older, they could be sleeping up to 18 hrs a day. At an older age, your Bulldog sleep patterns may change as well. For older Bulldogs, these could be signs of more serious issues such as dementia, arthritis, hypothyroidism, or other conditions associated with older age. Your Bulldog may be waking up more at night because its bladder is getting older and they need to use the potty more often. You can try and help with this by taking them out right before bed and limiting their water intake just before bed as well. Many factors could contribute to your Bulldog sleeping a lot. Puppies and senior dogs sleep more than adult Bulldogs. Stress, anxiety, boredom, diet, or disease can all be factors for why your dog is sleeping more than usual. In most cases, it is normal for dogs to sleep 12 or more hours a day. If you are concerned about your Bulldogs sleeping patterns it is always a good idea to talk to your vet. Lethargy or a lack of energy and enthusiasm can be a sign that your dog is being affected by something more than just laziness or a bit tired. If this describes your dog, then definitely consult with your vet. Many diseases and age-related problems can come with a change in sleeping patterns. Some dogs will sleep more in the wintertime because the days are shorter and colder. You can read this article I wrote to learn more about that. Do Dogs Hibernate? Winter Weather Questions Answered If you think your dog is sleeping a lot because of boredom you can always make an effort to have more playtime and exercise sessions with your dog. You could hire a dog walker we have a neighborhood teen that loves to walk dogs for a very reasonable rate! Or join a fun program you can work on together like this popular brain training for dogs course! Because Bulldogs have such a flat face and short nose common to the brachycephalic breed their tongue has less space inside their mouth. Their tongue may hang out while sleeping because it is hot and they are trying to keep cool, or they may be completely relaxed. For the most part, it is completely normal for your French or English Bulldog to sleep with its tongue hanging out. If your dog struggles to keep its tongue in its mouth it could be suffering from something called Hanging Tongue Syndrome. Sleep Problems and Solutions for Bulldog Puppies and Adults If you are struggling with getting your Bulldog to settle down and sleep at night you are not alone. Things that may be making this challenging can range from crying or whining at night, waking up in the middle of the night, struggling to settle down, or waking up too early in the morning. Some dogs will start to sleep well through the night then a few weeks or months later start to wake up again. This is called a sleep regression and can be normal. Like human babies when puppies are teething or going through growth spurts it could cause them to wake up at night or have difficulties sleeping. This routine can include using the restroom, bringing the noise level down, dimming the light, creating a relaxing and calm atmosphere. Give them plenty of exercise: Even though your dog may be pretty chill Bulldogs need plenty of stimulation and exercise each day. At least an hour a day for exercise should be set aside for your dog. The best time for a good exercise session is about 2 hours before bedtime. Try to include high cardio exercise as well and engaging brain activities so that your Bulldog will be both physically tired as well as mentally tired. If your dog sleeps in his own bed, or in a crate, having something that smells like you and a small stuffed animal to snuggle with can help him feel more safe and secure. This is especially true for puppies. Try changing meal times or limiting food and water: Take up their water after a certain time of the evening. If your Bulldog seems to need a bathroom break in the middle of the night all the time you can try changing his meal time to be a few hours earlier so he will get the poop out before bed or a few hours later so he can hold it until tomorrow. Either way, you may want to slowly adjust the time of his meals to see if that will help with the late-night bathroom breaks. If early morning waking is a problem, try figuring out what it is that may be waking them up? Is the sun coming up? Try adding some darkening curtains. Are there noises such as birds or early morning traffic? Try adding some white noise by using a noise machine like this one from Amazon. Amazon affiliate link. All it takes is some investigative work to try and figure out what may be causing the problem. If nothing seems to be working, your dog has changed his sleep patterns suddenly, he seems very lethargic and low on energy all the time, or he has other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his stool, or other concerns then you should take him to the vet immediately to get checked out. If you have a puppy and all its needs are met and it is still crying just remember it is common for it to whine and cry especially for the first week or so that you have him in your home. You can try a soothing stuffy like this one from Amazon affiliate link. An older dog who is new to your home may experience this as well. If you must check on him make sure that the lights stay dim, and you are as un-intrusive as you can be. If you are working with your puppy to sleep in their own bed or crate, make sure to not give in and then expect smooth sailing after that. You need to start the expectations as you mean to go forward. Bulldog Snoring and Sleep Apnea Light snoring in your Bulldog is usually not something to worry about, but heavy snoring may be a bigger problem. Heavy snoring may indicate sleep problems which makes it difficult for your dog to breathe and can, if left untreated lead to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Sleep apnea can be dangerous for your Bulldog, but there are some things you can do to help prevent your dog from snoring. Make sure your dog maintains a healthy weight. Overweight dogs are more at risk for snoring. Keep your dogs bed washed and clean. This will help prevent build up of allergens. Get your dog an orthopedic bed with a side affiliate link on it so you can prop your dog up. Teach him to sleep that way. Make sure the room is not hot and stuffy. A tooth infection can lead to an abscess that limits air flow. Get help from your vet. Being under the covers provides your Bulldog with a place that feels safe and secure like a small den. In general, it is safe for your Bulldog to sleep under the covers or under a blanket, but special care should be taken to make sure that he always has an escape route. Keeping their face un-covered can help. Where Should My Bulldog Sleep? Can Bulldogs Sleep Alone? Your dog can sleep alone but being the social cuddly breed they are would much prefer to sleep with or near you. They are a very loyal and social breed and feel much more comfortable being near their owner or another friend while sleeping. Sleeping near others helps them to feel part of a pack which will help them feel more secure and loved as well as bonded to their family. Can Bulldogs Sleep Outside? It is not recommended that Bulldogs sleep outside. Bulldogs thrive on relationships and being close to their owners, sleeping outdoors can be lonely and dangerous for this social breed. Their coats are also not thick enough to keep them very warm in cold temperatures. Sleeping outdoors can be dangerous as Bulldogs are too small to fight off predators. Do Bulldogs Like to Sleep with You? Bulldogs generally love to be close to their owners. They are very affectionate and cuddly and if allowed can enjoy sleeping in your bed next to you or in the same room as you at night. They tend to thrive on connection and will also likely follow you around the house during the day. There are a lot of great benefits you could get by letting your Bulldog sleep with you. Here are some listed below. Eases stress and anxiety.
This mix results in an intelligent, loving, and outgoing dog who enjoys being around people. They enjoy the company of both humans and other animals. They are generally good with children, although they may become overly excited if not properly socialized from an early age. Overall, Bichpoos make wonderful pets for families and individuals alike. The Bichpoo breed tends to have the best traits of both parent breeds. This makes them easy to train for tricks and obedience. They are also low-shedding, making them a good choice for people with allergies. These pups enjoy spending time with their owner and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. They make great companions for family life or individuals who are looking for an affectionate furry friend. Bichpoo Puppies Health Considerations Though generally very healthy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around 12 to 14 years — our Bichpoos for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Bichpoo puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. While these conditions can be costly to treat, the good news is that they can often be effectively managed with proper care. Finding a Bichpoo puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. The coat is hypoallergenic and does not shed, making the Bichpoo an ideal choice for people with allergies. Although the coat does not require much maintenance, it is important to brush it regularly to prevent mats and tangles from forming. In addition, the coat should be trimmed every few months to keep it looking its best. Meet Bichpoo Puppies for Sale. It is considered a designer dog breed. The mix originated in Australia and started appearing in the late s. The goal was to breed a low or non-shedding dog that was sturdy and active with a temperament for families with children. The Bich-Poo is charming, affectionate, highly intelligent, and eager to please. They tend to get along well with other pets and with children, which makes them a great fit for families. Bich-Poos are also alert watchdogs. They can be prone to excessive barking, but training and socialization as a puppy can curb this tendency. Although they will alert you as a watchdog, they are more interested in making friends, so will not make a good guard dog. Bich-Poos are highly adaptable. They do well in apartments or larger homes as long as they get enough exercise and fit right in with families with children, other pets, or both. They do well in most climates and, as with most dog breeds, caution should be taken with extreme heat or cold. With this first generation cross, many of the health issues associated with the parent breeds are often not a concern. However, there is always the potential for inherited issues. Some of the potential breed-related health concerns are allergies, patella luxation, and progressive retinal atrophy. Because they are a small dog breed, they are also prone to breaks and fractures if dropped. This designer dog breed tends to be highly intelligent. That, paired with their eagerness to please their owner, makes them quick learners and fairly easy to train. They tend to be a good fit for owners of any experience level. Novice owners may want to enroll in obedience and training classes to ensure training and socialization is going as it should. A professional trainer can also help you put a plan in place to eliminate any potential issues with separation anxiety or the nipping that can become a common fear or anxiety response in small dogs. A Bich-Poo will often have a soft and curly coat. If their coat takes on Poodle properties, then it will be low-shedding and hypoallergenic. Common coat colors are typically light, like white or apricot, but can appear in other colors like tan, brown, black, or gray. Professional grooming every six to eight weeks is also a good idea for a healthy coat. You will also want to trim their nails monthly and clean their eyes and ears regularly. Although small, these dogs are robust and energetic. They tend to have bouts of high energy and require regular exercise throughout the day. Although they are active dogs, moderate levels of exercise will be enough to tire them out. Regular exercise, like daily walks and active playtime, will help immensely when your pup gets a sudden spike of energy and starts racing. Some of their energy bursts can seem endless, but, due to their smaller size, they do tend to tire quickly, so these bouts of energy will likely be on the shorter side. After that, your Bich-Poo will likely be ready for a nap and some cuddles. Keeping your dog well-exercised and engaged is key. A bored dog is one that can become restless and start to whine, chew, or bark. This designer dog breed usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and can weigh between pounds. A Bichpoo will generally live between years. Featured Bich-poo Article.

Learn More Labrador Retriever is a quite famous breed, topping the list of great family dogs due to their friendly and social personality. Now, what colors come to your mind when you think of the Labradors? Black, yellow, and chocolate. Silver Labrador Retriever is a beautiful color variation of traditional Labradors; because of the presence of a dilute gene. Their distinct coat color has caught the attention of many; however, not without some controversy. About the Breed Silver Labrador Retrievers are one of the rarest shades of labradors. They are a hyperactive breed with a compelling sporting nature. They respond well to training, enjoy exploring nature with you, love playing water sports, and are fond of the fetch game, making them perfect for active families. These beautiful dogs are well-known for befriending every creature they see without any degree of communication. They love being the center of attention and thrive on social interaction. A little clingy at times, but they deserve all that for their service just existing. Their agreeable personality and intelligence make them one of the most charming breeds. However, according to the breed standard set by Labrador Retriever Club, true labradors are yellow, black, and chocolate in color. Many breeders believe that the other colors are due to cross-breeding Labradors with Weimaraners. They were created in Newfoundland and were first introduced by the European to Britain settlers via the ships trading between Canada and Poole. Labs were initially bred for duck retrieving, assisting in fishing adventures, and as a hunting dog. But with time, their popularity grew more as household pets, and to this date, especially in the western world. They first started appearing, according to some sources, in , while others believe it was in the s. Now, it is clear that their distinct coat colors are due to the presence of the recessive dilute gene pair that has recently appeared in the Labrador gene pool. The source of that dilute gene is what makes their exact origin vague. This is why the profile of Silver Labs remains controversial for the most part. Silver Labrador Facts Silver Labradors have blue eyes as puppies. They are more prone to developing skin problems such as Color Dilution Alopecia than other Labradors. They are outgoing and social. They are intelligent and highly trainable Silver Labrador Appearance Just look at Silver Labrador slaying in this picture, like he was born to model. Silver Labs undoubtedly possess the most distinct silverish gray color that leaves an impact on the observer. Their eyes are a beautiful shade of yellow, on which a relatively small black pupil looks striking. They have long floppy ears that rest flat on the sides. Their nose, which is always in search of something to eat or sniffing butts , tends to be brown in color. These rare gray labradors have this indescribable charm that keeps winning people over. Owners tend to be drawn to their wide skulls and muscular build. The average height range for almost all grown Silver Labs is between .WeightThe male Silver Lab tends to have a slightly bulkier build in contrast to the female Lab. On average, the weight of a fully-grown Silver Labrador falls between 55 to 80 pounds. The weight range is 45 to 70 pounds in the case of female Labs. CoatSilver Lab has a double coat to protect them against harsh cold weather. Theirinner coatis denser and thicker as compared to their outer coat, which is thinand short. Their coat is overall smooth and shiny and feels euphoric to pet. Yellow and black are the most common coat shades in Labrador Retrievers, and silver and chocolate are the least common. Silver Lab Puppies A Silver Labrador puppy is one of the most aesthetically pleasing sights to the eyes in the world. The sparkly blue eyes and the smoky grey shade make a striking contrast. As time progresses, they tend to darken. Their eyes turn yellow after the Silver pups cross the age of 6 to 8 months. Silver Labrador Temperament and Personality Talking about Silver Lab temperament, just like other Labrador Retrievers, they too have friendly, affectionate, caring personalities. They are a very intelligent breed that makes the best companion to their human family. This high-spirited breed matures physically but remains child-like at heart, lifting the mood around the house by being jolly, goofy, jumpy, and adored by absolutely everyone. The Silver Labrador retriever has an easy-going personality, which means they enjoy every activity with you. They just want to feel your touch, no matter what you do. It is because of their attachment to their owners, which is why they are prone to exhibiting signs of separation anxiety when left alone on their own for too long. Moreover, it is a social breed that thrives on attention and being around people. These sweet creatures are the best friends of kids. Silver Labs are patient and gentle toward children; they can be their playmates for hours without getting tired. One of the best qualities of These dogs is they get along really well with other dogs and pets. On the contrary, they get excited at the sight of another human, hang out with them and try to impress them with how cool they are they actually are. They also tend to chewupon objects due to anxiety. The Silver Lab is an active breed, just like the black and yellow labs. In order to keep them away from destructive behaviors, they need to stay stimulated mentally and physically. They can be a little prone to nipping, so they do require a lot of your attention. Plus, if you enjoy outdoor adventures like hiking, then Silver Lab will prove to be an extraordinary companion to you. Due to being double-coated, they shed a fair amount of hair, especially the Silver Labrador, because of skin problems. Grooming Requirements Brushing As we mentioned above, labs shed quite a bit. And by this, we mean you will be able to collect an adequate amount of hair from all over the house, especially during peak season. Using coconut oil at least once a month can keep their coat neat, shiny, and soft. Gently massage the oil for about five minutes and then clean it with a towel. Bathing Bathing your Labrador Retriever once a month is adequate. Use lukewarm water and mild shampoo; it will keep their skin maintained. However, if you start noticing scratching of nails against the floor while running, walking, or jumping around, trim their nails immediately. Ear Cleaning Their adorable floppy ears need to be checked and cleaned frequently to prevent any potential infection. Always include ear cleaning in their grooming session. Health Complications in Silver Labrador Every breed is likely to face minor or major health complications. And we have listed all the possible health conditions your Labrador Breed could suffer from. When getting a Silver Labrador, always look for a reputable breeder. Life Expectancy Silver Labrador dogs typically have a lifespan between 10 to 14 years. It can vary from dog to dog based on health issues, environment, and other factors. It occurs due to the presence of a recessive gene. In this condition, your dog suffers from skin problems, including hair loss or thinning in the form of patches, itchiness, scaliness, or flaky skin. Vets give treatments to tackle secondary skin infections. Avoid using brushes with harsh bristles. The deficiency of type II muscle fibers causes muscle weakness, resulting in symptoms like stunted growth, trouble swallowing, stiff arched back, shrunken muscles, and low tolerance to exercise. They progressively get worse and are the most prominent in 5 months old puppy. Sadly, most puppies with CNM are subjected to euthanization due to their inability to function normally in life. No dog owner should ever have to go through this painful experience. This developmental issue in both joints causes difficulty or friction in climbing stairs, jumping, running, and even walking. Exercise Induced Collapse Labradors and their unending love for playing and exercise is not something hidden; their energy drive is high. EIC refers to the recessive autosomal inherited trait. Your Labrador Retriever, despite feeling weak, will still try to be active. Then after five to ten minutes, they collapse. Extreme exercise sessions are to be avoided in dogs with this condition. This results in excessive discharge from ears, inflammation, itching, foul odor, and head shaking. Otitis Externais one of the most common ear infections in Silver Labradors, characterized by ear canal inflammation. Ear infections are unpleasant and painful and cause discomfort for your dogs. Consult a local veterinarian right away if you notice any of the above symptoms. Over Eating Labrador Retrievers are quite popular for being foodies. Some scientists associate it with a genetic mutation. Sometimes, overeating might also indicate an underlying serious health issue like hypothyroidism. Silver Labrador Diet and Nutrition Your high-energy Labrador Retriever needs a high-quality, nutritious, and protein-rich diet to function healthily. The amount of dog food you feed them may vary a little with their size and weight. For example, your Silver Lab of 50 pounds will need about 2 and a half cups of good quality dog food daily. The calorie requirement for an pound Silver Labrador is a little higher; they will need about 3 and a half cups of dog food to fulfill their 1, calorie requirement each day. Consider getting dog food that has adequate calcium for better joint development. And remember, it is always best to divide the meals into 3 to 4 intervals for better digestion. These greedy creatures tend to unleash their inner ever-hungry beast at the sight of food, which causes bloating. In order to keep them physically and mentally stimulated, 60 minutes of exercise every day is essential. And if your Lab is super active, make it 1. Labs love playing fetch, running, going on fast-paced walking, and being goofy. Thus, their exercise session can include any activity; just make sure they get enough exercise every day! Dedicate one hour of your time daily to your dog, and give them all your attention and love. Apart from playing and exercising, you can keep them busy by getting them interactive and stimulating toys. Those toys also help them in providing comfort when you leave them alone for a while. They are a highly intelligent breed and can be easily trained. They are a welcome addition to most families. Positive reinforcements work well with them; their love for food makes it easier to lure them into doing literally anything you want. All you need is a favorite treat, toy, or any complimentary food, and boom; your Lab becomes the most obedient boy in the world. As puppies, they are easier to control and manage, while the adult Labs are larger in size and can be a little stubborn. Conclusion Altogether, Silver Labrador dogs have all lovable characteristics, just like the traditional Labrador. They are outgoing, energetic, sweet, intelligent, and loyal furry friends. Their friendliness towards kids, strangers and other pets makes them great dogs for families. You might face a little difficulty finding reputable silver labrador breeders when getting a Silver Labrador. Follow your heart and go for it! Related Guide:. This hunting breed has a water-resistant or water-repellent coat that is slightly dry and oily. Unlike many short-haired breeds, Labs are outdoor dogs. They are usually able to keep warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Silver Labrador Retrievers have short, straight coats that shed seasonally. They have a double coat — with thick, dense hair — which helps keep them warm during winter months. Their heavy coats also offer additional insulation when swimming — a favorite pastime of Labradors, Silver Labs included. With a low-maintenance coat, the Silver Labrador Retriever only needs brushed once or twice a week. Meet Silver Lab Puppies for Sale. Loving companions, with the outgoing, friendly personalities Silver Labrador Puppies for Sale NC Silver labs were first created by a breeder in the early 80s and were officially recognized as a subset of the chocolate lab breed by the AKC in .While some think the unusual color comes from outside the breed, these dogs are verified by the AKC as percent Labrador retriever. Male labs grow to an average of .Our silver labrador puppies are bred as loving companions, with the outgoing, friendly personalities that have long made labs one of the most popular family dogs. These rare purebred, pedigreed pups are registered with the American Kennel Club. The Silver Labradors are registered as chocolates. Like other lab variations, silver labradors need lots of exercise. Get ready to play endless games of catch and take long walks around your neighborhood, where your pet is sure to make friends with other dogs and humans alike. These dogs respond well to training and easily adapt to new environments. They also tend to be great with children, although younger labs can be quite boisterous and may be excitable around those younger than 5. Our Other Labrador Retriever Colors Silver, chocolate, yellow, and black Labradors available for sale Black Labrador Puppies Black labs are sometimes considered the original Labrador puppies, brought to Newfoundland in the s. Because black is the dominant color gene for these dogs, they are more common than yellow, silver and chocolate labs. We offer an impressive selection of purebred chocolate labrador puppies for sale. This chocolate color comes from a gene variation on the classic black lab. Their golden hue occurs when both parents carry the gene for yellow fur rather than the dominant gene for black. Our love for dogs have been growing for over 30 years, with never having just one. Labrador Litters. How the dilute gene works Labrador coat color is controlled by a set of genes. You can read about the way B genes and E genes influence coat color in this article on Labrador color inheritance. However, the silver color is controlled by a different gene, the D gene. The D gene acts as a type of switch. Some would like to see silver labradors banned In simple terms, genes come in pairs. Big D produces full strength coat color. Little d produces a dilute color. This means that a Labrador needs two copies of the dilute gene in order to have dilute fur. Only the third combination would produce a silver coat. Unless little d is paired with another little d, it will have no effect. In some breeds of dog, all individuals have two little d genes. Weimaraners, for example. And the recent appearance of the double little d gene in chocolate Labradors is what has enabled the silver Lab to appear on the scene. Where do silver Labs come from? Reports of silver Labradors seem to have first appeared in the United States in the s. Culo Silver Labs was one of the early kennels to produce this new silver color. You may be interested to read this report of an interview with the owner Dean Crist giving his account of the history of the silver Lab. Exactly how this new color came to be is a question that many people are asking, and arguing about. People want to know where silver Labradors came from and how they were created. In particular, they want to know how the double dd gene got into the purebred Labrador. How did the dilute gene get into Labradors? There are a number of options that can explain the appearance of a new gene in a purebred dog mixed breeding spontaneous mutation hidden genes The first and most obvious explanation is that at some point, an outcross occurred, between a Labrador and a breed of dog that carries the dilute gene. A Weimaraner for example 1 Mixed breeding Many people believe that the first silver Labs were crossbreeds. Not only is this theory plausible, there are clear motives for dog breeders to create a new color variation in an existing breed. I will let you be the judge, as there is no evidence at this time, one way or the other. However, it is interesting to note that Silver Labradors can be traced back to two breeders. An update to her original article, however, also notes that she previously claimed that Weimaraners were also bred in those same kennels, but found out that that fact was in doubt. Those in favor of the Weimaraner outcross theory often claim silvers have a houndy look about them. To be fair, this is true of many field-bred Labradors of any color. And most silver Labradors today look pretty much the same as any other Labrador Retriever — apart from the fact that they are silver. The cross-breeding theory has been a very popular one. But recently it has lost some credibility due to genetic testing of silver Labs which has failed to show a link to Weimaraners. This is another way that a rare or unusual characteristic can appear in a family of dogs that were previously unaffected by it. Partly because the other two explanations are both so plausible. For a mutation to be identical to a gene that already exists for an unusual coat color in another breed would be something of a coincidence. Many people feel that the spontaneous appearance of this dd dilution gene in the Labrador Retriever gene pool is, to say the least, unlikely. However, it cannot be entirely ruled out. This explanation for the appearance of the silver Labrador in the s is perhaps the most valid alternative to the cross breeding theory. We know that some genes are dominant over others. And can mask or hide them. We call the masked or hidden genes recessive. Many diseases are caused by recessive genes and only appear when the unfortunate individual inherits two copies Genes carrying rare diseases can remain hidden for decades, only to appear when closely related dogs are mated together. This happens more frequently when gene pools are small, as they are in our pedigree dog populations. Colors can be dominant or recessive too The B color gene that determines whether or not a Lab is basically black or brown, and favors black dogs. Brown is recessive and a Lab needs two copies of the little b brown gene to have a brown coat. Brown labradors only became common when breeders deliberately set about mating them to one another. Some people argue that the rare dilute gene has also been present in Labradors all along, and that it only appeared, as rare diseases sometimes do, when two closely related dogs were bred. The first Labradors were not registered by the AKC until .Before then there would have been regular outcrossing with other similar breeds. Including the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, a breed that does have the dilute gene. So it is entirely plausible that the little d gene passed from Chesapeakes into one or two Labs before the Labrador pedigree registers were closed and remained hidden in the breed only to reappear in the s when the demand for Chocolates was beginning to rise. Silver Lab temperament and training Whatever the origins of the silver Lab, the silver Labradors we see today are very much Labrador in both temperament and conformation. Training a silver Lab puppy is a huge amount of fun. It takes a little time and patience as Labs can be rather bitey when small and rather bouncy as they grow into teenagers. I had indeed receved more information about Amigo, the puppy I was interested in. The email asked me to answer the following questions about my lifestyle and how it would affect the dog. I received another email describing how the delivery processed worked. We set up a delivery time and I provided her with my home address. All of this took place on Saturday, April 11, , through texting. I asked if I could have a current picture of Amigo and if I could have a vet update. I am quite aware of the complaint. However all what is explained is true but you also have to understand that I have been in this business for over 9 years. I have had situation's where fraudsters contacted my and follow up the process just like she did, just to take documents of my current papers and vet records to use them to carry out fraudulent activities. I was also out of town to deliver one of my pugs to his new home since it was 5 hours drive. I always expect my buyers to ask for al documents and prove of existence before signing the contract. It is clearly stated in my contact and in my email to explain how delivery process works that you fully understand the process before providing your information's for contract agreement to be prepared. If a buyers reads and understand the process, then sign the contract and when I provide information's for buyer to make payment and you start asking more and more question's, I will not respond because you just would have done that before signing contract and requesting for address to make payment. Also I did told her to always read and understand all process before signing and after signing the contract, all you need to do is respect terms in the contract and not to keep asking question's when I have buyers requesting to make instant payment for the pet you are asking. Also I searched for pet stores in her area and asked her to head to one of them and purchase a pet from there since she will be asking all sort of lerm questions after contract signing and receiving address for payment. She should never contact me again to purchase from me because I only sell to serious buyers. However, I am disappointed and frustrated that Brayan at Pug Puppy Ranch feels it necessary to place blame on me as the customer when all I was trying to do was ask questions; whether or not I asked them before or after I signed a contract seems arbitrary to me. I appreciate the Revdex. Email: sheeran earthlink. They also need proper socialization to live happily among humans and other animals. The only thing to do is ask! About Golden Retriever Dog Breeds History- Regarding the past of the golden retriver, there was a widespread belief that Russian circus dogs were crossed with Scottish and English retriever breeds and this led to their development. This idea lasted until the s when the contemporary notes of Lord Tweed Mouth, the creator of the breed, were discovered which revealed that he had crossed the yellow retriever he owned with a representative of a Spaniel breed living in Scotland at that time the Tweed Water Spaniel. This breed was bred to be a hunting dog. Their primary task was to collect the shot birds mainly in wet marshy areas. They are less and less used for hunting purposes. Instead, they have become one of the most popular family dogs in Anglo-Saxon areas. Appearance — Golden retrievers are medium to large size dogs and are characterised by their unique appearance. It has a broad head with large expressive dark brown eyes and hanging floppy ears. Their coat is only available in golden colour hence they are named golden retrievers. Personality- The golden retriever is an extremely kind, friendly, maximally human-focused dog breed. The Sullivan child dwells in every golden retriever without the slightest sign of malice or aggression towards other dogs or humans and not only in connection with their owners. A truly positive thinker. The hallmark of their personality is their willingness to comply. They do and learn almost everything in order to make their masters happy and satisfied. If we were talking about students and not dogs, perhaps in a positive sense they would be geeks to characterise their character and behaviour. Life Span and Size- The average weight of an adult Golden retriever can range between 25 to 35 kg and they can grow between 51 to 61 cm in height. Compared to the size of the golden retriever, they are a surprisingly long-living dog breed with a typical lifespan of 13 to 15 years. But it is not uncommon for individuals to be 17 to 18 years old as well, which is really a curiosity. Trainability- Due to their desire to observe, golden retrievers can be easily and quickly trained for tasks that suit their characters. This lovely, calm dog comes out most with a trainer like his own personality. They are matched by understanding, friendly and positive training methods. Hardness and roughness are very far from this breed and not expedient. They are passionate about their owners, enthusiastic and committed, they melt away from positive feedback. Activity- Due to their hunter past they are very active, love to move, come and go, fool around, run with their owners, fetch the ball and of course, they love swimming and water. This dog needs to be moved and run regularly otherwise they will not be happy without enough activities they can turn inwards. Food is the biggest motivator for a Golden Retriever, whether you want to train them or get them to behave nicely in your house. However, these habits can be managed and the food craze of Golden Retrievers can be managed if you train them at a young age. Dealing With All The Shedding! Before you bring a Golden Retriever puppy home, it is important to note that they are heavy shedders. There is no escaping from the hair they will shed all over your house, pretty much throughout the year. Their thick double coats tend to shed a lot, especially before and after winters when they blow their coats. While you cannot control the heavy shedding, you can manage it by grooming your Golden Retriever pup regularly and keeping your house clean. While they are athletic and energetic, they lack the instincts of guard dogs. You cannot expect a Golden Retriever to scare off intruders and safeguard your house. They are too playful, goofy, and innocent to be guard dogs! This often leads to separation anxiety if you fail to give them enough attention. Never make the mistake of keeping your pet tied outside your house or making them feel neglected by not attending to them for too long. Although they do not demand constant attention, they have an inherent desire to be loved and wanted by their pet parents. They need their daily dose of exercise to burn the calories they consume throughout the day. A Golden Retriever will never say no to food. It is your responsibility as a pet parent to monitor their diet and keep them healthy. Retrievers tend to get stubborn over time, especially when it comes to getting things they love. Of course, you should always get a professional opinion from a vet if you have any concerns at all that your Frenchie could be overweight. Visual checks and indicators As well as being able to feel their ribs, you should also be able to look at them to check if they are a healthy weight. If they are in the ideal weight ranges for their gender and size, a Frenchie will have a thin layer of fat over their ribs, these being noticeable as they move. You should also be able to see and feel their spine when they bend and curl themselves into a sleeping position. Another way to check your Frenchie is a healthy weight is to look at them from above. If they are not carrying extra pounds, they tend to look like an hourglass shape, with a visible waistline that is smaller than their chest — you can see what that looks like with our Frenchie Claude in the photo below. Sometimes a quick visual check from above is all you need to do. As I mentioned earlier, their appearance can vary a lot. They get tired and overexerted easily Frenchies will often become breathless after heavy activity, but when overweight this will be noticeable after just a tiny amount of activity. Overweight Frenchies will start panting or having to stop after a very short walk. One of the most visible indicators that your Frenchie needs to lose weight is if they are unable to climb up steps and stairs like they did before. They are unable to groom and scratch themselves Whilst Frenchies cannot clean certain areas of their body , they can still lick and scratch themselves. If you notice your dog is unable to scratch and groom himself like he used to, it could be because the flexibility has been replaced with weight gain fat. How can I get my French Bulldog to lose weight? If you are concerned that your fat French Bulldog puppy is overweight or that your adult Frenchie is no longer at a healthy weight anymore, then here are some tips on what to do. Feed them lighter dog food And by that, I mean dog food with less calories, higher in fiber, and more protein. By doing so your Frenchie will burn the calories off faster and will lose weight quicker as a result. Vets say that dogs should not eat anything more than 25 calories for every pound they weigh. The average male Frenchie weighs around 25 pounds, meaning your dog may only need calories a day. You should always read the guidelines written on commercial dog food packaging, and if in doubt please read my guide to how much Frenchies should eat to stay healthy. But please do this on advice of your vet. You might be surprised at how many extra calories your overweight French Bulldog takes on from picking up scraps in the kitchen or dropped from the table. I try to walk Claude twice a day if I can, each time taking up around 30 minutes. I think this is probably why my Frenchie is very trim and muscular, rather than being a fatty. Weigh your Frenchie regularly If you have got a fat French Bulldog who needs to go on a diet to lose weight, then you should have a target in mind. The weight target is something your vet can advise on. Once you have that target weight in mind, I recommend regular weighing sessions, probably every couple of days. This will help you to keep them on target. Weighing a fat Frenchie is actually quite easy. Weigh yourself on the scales first, then pick your dog up and weigh yourself again. The difference in weight is what your overweight Frenchie comes in at. Neutering which can lead to less energy. Bloating and water retention due to illness. Canine medication. Excellent nutrition is important in order to have a healthy and happy dog. There are many varieties of food out there; wet, dry, freeze dried, raw, or cooked. Regardless of what food you decide on, they do need to be on a high-quality and nutritionally balanced dog food. What are the signs of high-quality dog food? The food should contain lean meat-based protein sources such as chicken , turkey , pork and beef. Feeding Your French Bulldog at Different Life Stages Once your puppy is fully grown, generally, between months of age they will progress on adult dog food. As young puppies, they have a huge requirement for calories and high-quality ingredients to promote puppy growth. Puppies grow rapidly during the first six months of their life and they continue growing more after this period. Without proper nutrition, they might be stunted and underweight. Check out our other article to learn how to switch puppy to two meals per day! Once your puppy is fully grown, generally, between months of age they will progress to adult dog food. This food will provide the nutrients and calories required to maintain an adult weight. Very active dogs will need more calories while sedentary dogs will need less. Dogs that have been neutered will have slightly different nutritional requirements than other adult dogs. They generally need fewer calories to prevent weight gain which can happen in the months after neutering surgery. This can be achieved by feeding a diet with relatively low carbohydrates and high-quality lean protein. Senior dogs require highly digestible foods and a good source of omega fatty acids for potentially stiff joints. They might require varying levels of protein depending on their kidney function and body condition. Good quality nutrition will keep your dog at optimal body condition and health. Feeding stage-of-life specific recipes allows your dog to have the optimal nutrients for the life stage they are in. However, regardless of small differences, most dogs will loosely follow the growth chart below. Age of French Bulldog. Home » Blog » Fat French Bulldog? Maintaining a healthy weight for your Frenchie is crucial for their overall well-being and quality of life. Angelica, French Bulldog puppy at TomKings Puppies She is not overweight The ideal weight for a French Bulldog typically ranges from 16 to 28 pounds, with males weighing slightly more than females. One of the easiest ways to determine if your Frenchie is at a healthy weight is to perform a visual and physical examination. A healthy French Bulldog should have a defined waistline, and a visible ribcage, and be able to move comfortably without excessive panting or fatigue. On the other hand, an overweight Frenchie may have a rounded abdomen, no waistline, and appear sluggish or tired. Overfeeding Frenchies have a small body frame and a slower metabolism, which means they require fewer calories than larger breeds. Feeding your Frenchie too much food, or giving them too many treats, can lead to weight gain. Lack of exercise French Bulldogs are known for being couch potatoes, but they still need regular exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Sirius, Fluffy French Bulldog puppy at TomKings Puppies He is not overweight Consider home-cooked dog food Another tip for helping your French Bulldog lose weight is to consider home-cooked dog food instead of store-bought dog food. This can be especially beneficial if your Frenchie has specific dietary needs or food sensitivities. Additionally, many store-bought dog foods can be high in calories and may not be the best option for weight loss. Daily Walks Daily walks are an essential part of helping your French Bulldog lose weight and maintain a healthy weight. If your Frenchie is not used to regular exercise, start with shorter walks and gradually increase the duration and intensity over time. This will help prevent injury and make the walks more enjoyable for your Frenchie. Alex, Fluffy French Bulldog puppy at TomKings Puppies He is not overweight Avoid walking your Frenchie during the hottest part of the day , as they can quickly become overheated. Early morning or late evening walks are ideal, as the temperatures are cooler and there are fewer distractions. To keep your Frenchie engaged and motivated during walks, consider bringing along toys or treats. Playing fetch or other games can also help them burn more calories and build muscle. Bully breeds are usually bulky, with robust heads and sizable quantities of loose skin spread all over their bodies. If you look at the ideal weight of your French bulldog it depends mostly on their age and sex. A female French bulldog can weigh around 16 to 24 pounds and male Frenchie can weigh around 20 to 28 pounds. Is Your French Bulldog Overweight? In a normal anatomical view the chest of the French bulldog should be wider than their abdomen and if it is not than your Frenchie is overweight. You should be able to see their waist and legs yet still feel their spine and rib cage. They Are Unable To Groom Themselves While it is true that some French bulldogs cannot reach certain spots on their bodies in order to clean themselves, but they can still scratch themselves. But if they are a bit tubby! They Got Tired Easily Frenchies will often pant or start to breathe heavily after heavy exertion, but if your pup is overweight, the fatigue will set in quicker and be noticeable after a walk of just a few blocks. If you see these signs it means your Frenchie is overweight. Your dog needs healthy protein, fat and vitamins. The right diet plays an important role in keeping your pet — even just a little chubby — a good shape. There are two ways you can go about this. Feed Right Amount Puppies often get fed too much food. Dogs should only consume around 25 calories every time they weigh a pound. That means you should adjust the amount of dry food you give your puppy as he or she grows up so that their weight remains on track! Make sure that you feed your dog a healthy mix of protein-rich foods, vegetables without dressing and fruits once or twice a day. Exercise French Bulldogs are what some people would generally consider the typical couch potato-type dog, but this is quite a generalization. You should at least be taking your French bulldog for a 30 minute walk around the block and of course you can always play with him inside too. Generally speaking, a healthy weight for a male French Bulldog ranges from 20 to 28 pounds, whereas a healthy weight for a female French Bulldog can range from 16 to 24 pounds. Is my French Bulldog overweight: Having your French Bulldog weighed by your veterinarian is the best way to tell if they are overweight. In that case, your vet can determine if your dog is overweight. Scores typically range from one to nine, with one representing underweight and nine extremely overweight. Body composition targets usually fall between four and five. Use the following calculator to see if your French Bulldog is overweight. In the United States, more than half of all dogs are overweight or obese, according to the Pet Obesity Project. Being an overweight french bulldog puts your dog at a greater risk of arthritis and reduces lifespan. Obesity, however, has been associated with many other conditions in dogs, including cancer, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. Your French Bulldog may become overweight French Bulldog because of many factors — such as being overfed, not getting enough exercise, or being ill. For dogs to clean themselves, they must be able to reach all parts of the body. You should not jump to the conclusion that your French Bulldog is obese. Although the ribs are not prominent, there is not much visible fat on the sides. Again, some Frenchies cannot reach those parts of their bodies because of their different body types. Your Frenchie must look like this as closely as possible. DIET Although it may seem obvious, what you feed your French Bulldog and the portion size of each meal drastically affect its weight. A study has shown that dogs eating kibble are 1. Furthermore, a few small meals throughout the day can help maintain a healthy weight, and more than one large meal per day. Depression in dogs can show itself by becoming inactive and withdrawn and changing their eating and sleeping habits. Dogs who exercise less than four hours a week are six times more likely to be obese than dogs who exercise over seven hours a week. For example, a joint injury could deter them from exercising, or thyroid disease or metabolic disorder could result in being underweight or obese. It is also important to talk to your veterinarian about your Frenchies ideal weight, whether there is, in fact, a weight issue, and if an underlying health problem could be to blame. To treat obesity in dogs, weight loss must be achieved, followed by a lifetime commitment to maintaining a healthy weight. Weight loss occurs when caloric intake decreases and exercise increases, like in humans. As protein and fiber stimulate metabolism and increase satiety, foods high in protein and low in fat promote weight loss. Limiting treats and table scraps is important. It is good to feed green beans and other vegetables instead of treats. Exercise is just as important as diet to reach and maintain a healthy body weight. You can get canned and kibble dog foods formulated for weight loss and maintenance from commercial and prescription sources. It is not recommended to eat homemade diets because they often fall short of daily vitamin and mineral requirements. You can walk your dog on a leash for thirty minutes daily you can do this in ten-minute intervals , play outdoor games, train on a treadmill, or swim. Dog daycares can provide exercise and playtime for your pet two to three times a week. Most pet stores sell bowls that require your dog to work for each piece of food if it eats too fast. Treat balls that dispense treats only when your dog rolls them around are another good tool. To avoid upsetting the digestive system, dietary changes must be made gradually. After purchasing a new food, feed half the newly purchased food with half the old food for seven days unless your veterinarian advises otherwise. Once this period is over, you may feed the food exclusively. Weighting pets is free at most veterinary clinics, and no appointment is needed. As weight changes, exercise and diet protocol adjustments may need to be made. You should follow the weight management protocol carefully to prevent your French Bulldog from gaining weight. Ensure that dietary changes are explained to family and friends to prevent your Frenchie from consuming table scraps. Once your Frenchie has reached a healthy weight, a maintenance diet and exercise schedule should be followed for the rest of their life. Conclusion Suppose their eating habits are not checked or maintained properly. In that case, French Bulldogs are prone to rapidly gaining weight if they are not properly fed. Diet and exercise are the keys to losing weight, whether in a human or your French Bulldog.

Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? Related Content. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things.
