How to Train a 7-Month-Old Labrador As your Lab progresses to seven months old, a lot of the previous training needs to be kept consistent as you gradually teach him to comprehend more commands. Maybe there is a trespasser, and you want your dog to scare them away. You will need to continue training your dog to hold things or release them on command, but you can also proceed to add distance and even more background distractions. Ironically, you need to teach him to bark on command before learning to be silent on cue. Over this month, he will learn to associate the respective commands with barking and silence. This is quite tricky, but your Lab will eventually get there if you practice and stay consistent. The eighth month is ideal for training your Lab to go to different places upon hearing the command word. Either way, do not overload him with place commands, and stick to no more than two per month. Your 1-year-old Labrador only learns to comprehend more at the same pace as he has since the 6-month mark. You should also audit previously taught commands and see any weak associations you can reinforce. If you never introduce your Pug to a cat and then suddenly bring one home, they will likely not get along very well. Instead, it is important for your Pug to be allowed around cats as a puppy. This will allow them to learn how to act around cats when they are very impressionable. Friendly cats who are around dogs often are the best option, as they provide your canine with a positive experience. However, socialization is important if you truly want them to get along with cats. This is probably one of the better breeds for homes with cats simply due to their small size and low prey drive. You introduce cats to Pugs just like any other canine. You want to start slow, even if your dog has been around cats before. Here is a short breakdown of how to introduce your Pug to a cat: Confine your cat to a room. The cat should have everything they need in this room, as they should stay in it exclusively for at least a week. This is important to ensure that they are comfortable in their new home before the dog is involved. Plus, it also gives you time to slowly introduce your dog to them. Use smell. Everything is new and fun for your pug, but for your resident cat, this can be traumatic. Offer plenty of reassurance and one-on-one play, feeding and grooming time. Visit the Vet for Assistance Cats can react very quietly to stress, but it can take an extreme toll on their health. Check in with your vet before you bring home your new pug. Get a baseline established with bloodwork and a urinalysis. Ask your vet about calming medications, food and other options you can try to help your kitty adapt to the changes in your household. Once you bring home your pug, watch your kitty closely for changes in their eating, drinking and litter box habits. Often going outside the box can be an indication they have a urinary infection or are experiencing stress. Your vet can help you troubleshoot the situation and help everyone feel better. Never punish any pet for an accident! Make Cat and Dog Introductions a Positive Experience When you introduce your pug and kitty, make sure your pug is tired. Take her on plenty of walkies, and perhaps even a trip to the dog park, before she spends time with your kitty. Have your pug on a leash, and under your control at all times. Offer plenty of tasty treats, calm words and pets to make it a positive experience. Never leave them alone unattended and never force your pets to spend time together. If either pet shows signs of stress, or if your pug is getting too close for comfort, end the meet and greet. Keep introductions short and sweet so no one feels overwhelmed. Create a Calm Environment for Your Cat Use a calming plug-in like the Feliway multi-cat , which releases pheromones to help soothe your kitty. This is a homeopathic medication that is safe for animals but check with your vet first, of course. If your pug is particularly lively, you may want to try a Thundershirt to help calm them, or try one for your cat. Avoid loud noises, major changes in routine and other disruptions for your cat. Remember, that cats love routine and calm. We currently have three pugs and four cats. The pugs hangout downstairs and everyone is just fine. Everyone is living their best independent lives. Your pug may even chase your new kitty. He thinks this is the best playmate ever but your new cat is traumatized this often happens if you bring home an older, less-playful cat! OR it can work in reverse--your new kitten wants to play play play and your senior pug just wants to be left alone. How can you help everyone get along? Well, first, follow the introduction rules above, for both pets. Treat your resident pet like the special friend they are. Offer lots of playtime and plenty of snackies. Introducing a new kitten to a resident pug is easier than the reverse, but there are a few issues to watch. BUT not only is this extremely gross, but it can lead to parasites and illness. This means you have to be extremely diligent about scooping, especially if your kitten is just learning the ropes of how to use the potty box. You may wish to try a covered litter box , which can keep pugs away from poo snacks until you can scoop. Kitten Claws are Sharp and Pug Eyes are Vulnerable This is one of the most frightening aspects of introducing your pug and kitten. Unfortunately, eye problems are a fact of pug health. Cats paws are essentially snipped off at the bone imagine your fingers being cut off below the first knuckle. This can lead to ongoing health issues for your cat, including arthritis and litter box issues because it hurts to scratch. Keep cats claws trimmed up regularly. One wonderful solution to the cat claw dilemma is a product called Soft Paws. When you are away from home, you should always offer your cat plenty of spots where they can retreat if they need to get away from your pug. Make sure they can navigate safely to their food and water dish, sleep area, play area, and litter box without braving their way through pug territory. Baby gates offer a great solution to partition off areas of your home and keep your pug from chasing down the cat. Keep your dog safely in their kennel at night to give everyone a break from the chase. Offer your cat a high cat tree where they can hang out with lots of hiding nooks and play spaces. If your pug seems to have a lot of energy, especially when it comes to the cat, see if you can find positive ways to help them burn off steam. Take them for walks, introduce them to playmates at the dog park, play dates or doggie daycare. Better yet channel those pug smarts by enrolling in a manners class. Teach your pug basic behaviors and commands. Pugs might be goofballs, but they love to please! They take orders very well, and can be trained as therapy pets to visit the elderly or those with special needs. Give the cat a break and teach your pug some new tricks. Cats and dogs can certainly live together. There are so many homeless pets in the world looking for a loving spot to call their own. Many local rescues and Humane Societies offer classes and seminars to help you deal with behavior challenges. Believe it or not--cats and dogs can learn to get along!

It is registered as yellow and that is fine according to the rules. However, in purebred Labs neither white nor silver are recognized as allowed colours. White may be a term used to describe a very light yellow. Even good, reputable breeders may use the term as that is what the public may know, but hopefully they explain this to you. These will be registered as yellow. Silver is a dilute of chocolate. As charcoal is a dilute of black and champagne is a dilute of yellow. I believe there are tips on this site on how to determine this. Unless a dog ended up in rescue with it's papers there is no way for you to be assured of it's breeding. It can happen, my own rescue ESS had her papers. A rescue dog, regardless of lineage, is just as deserving of a good home as any well bred, pure bred dog. Plus, Labradors are still, I think, the most popular breed in the U. Unfortunately this might mean they are also the most poorly bred by BYB and that might be the case with a rescue dog. Sorry to say. If it is important to be as sure as you can of certain behaviours and traits, be as sure as you can of good health in some areas and be positive the dog will not have some health issues that genetic testing can proof against then go for a well bred pure bred. The Lab was a working dog used during hunting pursuits and the hunting fraternity heavily favored the Black Labrador over all other colors. And so red labs were relatively uncommon. But in a reversal of the trend today, in the early days of the breed the more common shades of yellow that existed were dark yellow to fox red. The lighter shades of yellow and cream that we think of as normal today, were actually quite rare. In fact, the first ever registered yellow was a dark golden color. However, through the mid to late s, lighter shades of yellow and cream became more fashionable and breeders sought to selectively breed for these colors. This is mostly my opinion and not concrete fact, but the two theories I have on why the lighter colors of Yellow Labradors became more common are: Firstly, during the early years of the breed the darker yellows and reds were more common. So when a pale cream or very light yellow was born, it seemed more exotic, rarer and hence more desirable. So breeders started to selectively breed for these colors and hence less and less reds were born. Secondly, since the middle s, a famous brand of British toilet paper, Andrex has used a pale Yellow Labrador in their television adverts. Their adverts went on to be shown in over countries for over 35 years. Most colors centered on a cream to light golden color. The dark yellows and reds fell out of fashion. But in the last 10 or 15 years, the range of available shades in the Yellow Labrador have once again widened. They stood out among the crowd and so they were more desired. This caused breeders to try to match the demand and selectively breed for lighter colors. Due to a lack of popularity of the dark red coat colors, it all but disappeared. But this new-found rarity in turn made the darker red Labs more desirable. So now there are many breeders who are selectively breeding to try to obtain litters of reds to meet the demand of people who want the rarer color. Things have turned full circle. Controversy Around The Red And Darker Yellow Shades Being uncommon in comparison to the black, paler yellow and chocolate shades does make some people question the red Labradors pedigree. They question whether in fact they are a pure bred Labrador or not? However, unlike the so-called Silver Labrador Retriever that is surrounded by accusations of outcrossing Labradors with Weimaraners to introduce the diluted coat color to the breed, no such controversy surrounds the darker colors of Yellow and Red Labradors. They are a genuine, pure bred Labrador, with a history going back to the earliest days of the breed. Another controversy is the fact that Fox Red Labrador breeders charge a far higher price than breeders do for the more traditional colors of the breed. They advertise their dogs as being a rare breed and charge a premium. There is some truth in this, but this controversy also follows many other breeds and colors of dogs. Are Breeders of Reds Irresponsible? There is some evidence to support this in a very few small cases, but there are some highly responsible breeders too and I think the good do outnumber the bad. Many people have asked if different colored Labs have different temperaments. Is the Fox Red Lab temperament different from the other Lab colors? In our experience, no a Fox Red lab has the same loving, friendly temperament as black, yellow, and chocolate Labs. Fox red Labrador breeders Labs come in three colors, yellow, chocolate and black. As well as some pale, dilute forms of those colors. The red fox Lab, or fox red Lab, is a dark coated variety of the yellow Labrador Retriever. Breeders are selecting darker red Labrador Retrievers to breed from as they become more popular companions than paler yellow Labs. Sometimes known as the ruby Labrador or fox red Lab, these are smart, energetic dogs are best suited to active owners. Yet at one time, almost all Labradors were black. This was partly due to nature, and partly due to a little human interference. Chocolate and yellow Labs were both harder to breed for and less desirable. Horrifically, yellow or brown puppies were often culled at birth! Yet all three colors of Labrador Retriever, black, chocolate and yellow including the red shade , share the same origins or history. Bred to be hunting companions, with bags of intelligence and a friendly disposition. In recent years, these rarer colors are becoming more popular. Which leads to more people selectively breeding for them. And therefore more dogs being born with these coats. Red Fox English Lab vs American Lab The trend in Labrador coat colors swung to paler and paler colors in the s, and remained that way for decades. Especially among the dog showing community. Fortunately a pool of dark yellow or fox red Labs remained popular in the working sporting dog community. Possibly because a pale yellow dog, being far too easy for wildfowl to spot, is not an ideal hunting companion. American Labs are slimmer built, with less stocky heads and chests. They have a stronger prey drive, are a little less forward and playful. Even today you are unlikely to find a Red Labrador with a show background. Any dog advertised as an English fox red Labrador will probably have a pedigree that is a mix of American and English dogs. It is largely from this pool of working retrievers that we now have the stunning fox red Labrador Retrievers that we see today. And because they are often the American Lab type rather than English Lab type, they are often taller and more athletic in appearance than the paler yellow Labs. And if you live in the USA, you may have to do plenty of detective work to find one at all. You may have more luck looking for an American Lab type, from working lines. They are very intelligent and trainable, with loyal, loving personalities. Although they have the usual Lab friendliness, they can also be a little more nervous and wary of strangers and slightly high strung. Lots of socialization and plenty of attention will keep these dogs happy. Coupled with lots of exercise, and both mental and physical activities to keep them busy. Presumably because breeders are selecting for the popular deeper coat color in order to increase puppy sales. There is a lot of pressure on breeders to produce certain colors. But a responsible breeder should not choose parents purely on the basis of color. Especially when there are not large numbers of fox reds to choose from. You may be tempted to skip this — but give it a go — it might be easier than you think! Think of a Labrador as a basically black dog. Black is the default color. The black coat is caused by a pair of genes called the B genes Your dog inherits one from his mother and one from his father — in a pair — like this: BB B genes come in big or little versions. So a black dog could have a pair that look like this instead: Bb Little b carries the code necessary to make a brown coat instead of a black one. BUT, big B is dominant and switches off little b. So little b only gets a say, if two of them get together like this: bb, and when that happens, you get a chocolate Lab! This is done by two little e genes. They also come in a pair like this: ee And when they get together they have the amazing power to completely block the genes that cause black and brown coats. A lab with two little ee genes cannot have a brown or a black coat and so the coat color now defaults to yellow. Now we are getting closer to our fox red color. E genes can also be big like this: EE or mixed like this: Ee, but when that happens the big E switches off the little e, and takes away its power. Yellow vs Red Fox Lab Coats A red Lab is a variation of yellow, and every red dog has those two essential little e genes that switch off black and brown. But then it starts to get a little bit more complicated. It centers on a pigment called pheomelanin. And it is controlled by two different sets of genes. The A gene controls the production of the red color. And the C gene controls whether or not it is fully expressed or diluted. This is what makes things a little more complicated. In fact, I am still over-simplifying it a bit. Otherwise the B gene will override them. And you are back to black or brown. Fox Red Lab Breeders Your first step when bringing any Labrador into your life should be to make sure that this is the right time for you to do this. The next step is to find a reputable breeder of Labradors. Finding a nice fox red stud dog and making a list of all his recent matings is often a starting point. You are most unlikely to find a good breeder who only breeds fox reds. This is because color is not the top priority for a responsible breeder. And remember, in most yellow litters there will be a range of shades. Puppies may darken as they grow, or they may not. No breeder can guarantee you the final color of your puppy. Make sure that both parents have good hips, elbows and a clear eye test, as well as a PRA clear certificate. Then your pup will have the best chance of growing up healthy. Red Fox Lab Puppy Prices When it first starts to trend, a fashionably colored dog may be more expensive, and this is still happening to some extent with reds. My advice is to be wary of paying an unusually high price for a red lab puppy. It could indicate that you have found an unscrupulous breeder who may be cutting corners on health or other important matters. The reason I say this is because many respectable breeders will look down on selling puppies of different colors for different prices. In fact paying the same price irrespective of color could mean you have a better breeder, and a healthier pup! This shade gets increasingly darker over the first few weeks. By three weeks old they are starting to look much more like the Labrador you know and love. By the time you take them home at 8 weeks old they will have that lovely fox red shade. Not all the puppies in a litter will be the same shade, even if both of their parents are fox red themselves. Just like any other Labrador, it will be important to dedicate their first few weeks in your home to getting them settled. Starting to work on important things like potty training and setting food habits. They really benefit from positive reinforcement training. Using rewards to help encourage them to behave in a way that will help them to fit nicely into your family. Start off with no more than a few minutes of formal exercise a day when they are small puppies. And work up to any big walks or runs very gradually over time so as not to accidentally hurt them. Did you turn up here hoping to learn about red fox Labs, only to find us referring to them as fox red instead? There are no consistencies in the way fox red Lab is spelled. Whether fox red is one word or two. Or whether the fox or the red comes first. Of course, we know fox red is much more special than that. At least it means you can spell it any way you like! I tend to say fox red Labrador, you can say redfox or red fox Labrador if it makes you happy. Ultimately they are all just gorgeous Labradors, with a darker shade to their yellow coat. Fox Red Labradors are a rare-colored version of the Labrador Retriever. Despite this, they can be registered as purebred Yellow Labrador Retrievers , as the darker-colored coat is not considered to be a disqualifying factor. Due to their unique and certainly eye-catching color, the Fox Red Labrador continues to grow in popularity. Labrador Retrievers are known for being exceptionally sweet and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds. These dogs yearn to be a part of a family, and fit right in when joining one. In fact, Labs are considered one of the kid-friendly dog breeds. Well-socialized Fox Red Labradors tend to get along well with children, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. After all, every person they meet is a potential friend that they can play with. Labrador Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Despite their energy, Fox Red Labradors can adapt to most settings. As long as this dog breed has a chance to get in daily walks, go outside to run and play, and they get plenty of attention, they are content. They are not overly affected by cold weather, but they have a dense double coat. Fox Red Retrievers are also happiest when in the presence of people and they love to be with their families whenever possible. They also have a lot of energy and get bored easily. Potential health concerns to be aware of in Fox Red Labrador Retrievers can include hereditary myopathy, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , progressive retinal atrophy, heart disease, and cataracts. There is also a condition with a genetic link that can occur in young adult Labradors called exercise-induced collapse EIC. Carriers can be identified by DNA tests. Good breeding practices can reduce the risk of potential health issues and make a big difference in the health of Fox Red Lab puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents and about any health tests or clearances. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an EIC DNA test, and an ophthalmologist evaluation at a minimum. As a large, deep-chested dog breed, the Fox Red Labrador Retriever is at a higher risk of bloat. Bloat in dogs can be dangerous and can become fatal if the stomach flips gastric torsion. Labrador Retrievers are one of the smartest dog breeds and are highly trainable. Although they can become stubborn at times, they are eager to please and pick up on training quickly overall. Their energy and intelligence mean they can lose focus in training and get bored easily. However, training that is kept clear, consistent, and focused on positive rewards usually keeps them focused and responding well. Any color variant of the Labrador Retriever is ideal for beginner dog owners. Fox Red Labrador Retrievers have a short, dense double coat that is water-resistant. They shed year-round and more heavily as the seasons change. Brushing their coat a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding is usually enough to keep their coat healthy and looking great. Bathing is on an occasional, as-needed basis. Because their coat tends to protect them from the cold and they are one of the dog breeds that tend to love water , your Fox Red Lab may try to go for a swim regardless of the season. If they are an avid swimmer or tend to get into a lot of things, you may need to bathe them more often. It is highly recommended to give them a bath or at least rinse them off thoroughly after going swimming with your dog. Their nails should be trimmed once or twice monthly. This will help prevent ear infections. Proper dental care for dogs is essential for preventing the tartar buildup that lends to dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. Brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day is a good start. You can also supplement your dental care efforts with dental hygiene chews, a special dental care diet, and more. Like other Labs, Fox Red Labrador Retrievers are high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for this dog. However, they will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Often, they are just happy to be spending time with you. Labs tend to have an extended puppyhood until they are around years old. They will mellow out a little, but also tend to maintain a puppy-like exuberance even in their senior years. Once they are done growing and your vet has cleared them for more activities, you can try a lot of different things. Labs are athletic and versatile dogs. They are one of the sturdy dog breeds for outdoor adventures and tend to enjoy a variety of activities. They tend to excel in swimming, running, obstacle courses, and several dog sports. Fully-grown Fox Red Labrador Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Fox Red Labs generally live for years on average. Ever seen a fox red lab? They are not common but when I saw my first one I fell in love! Here is a little history on the fox reds. The fox red coat color is NOT a new shade or a separate color in the Labrador breed. The American Kennel Club Labrador breed standard states: "Yellow—Yellows may range in color from fox-red to light cream, with variations in shading on the ears, back, and underparts of the dog". Fox red or dark yellow were the original shade of yellow in Labrador Retrievers. This coat color dates back to the early 's. This dark color was the common color until after World War II. The lighter Labradors became more popular because they were rare at the time and therefore the deep fox red color was almost lost. Fox red labs new found rarity has made them very desirable and has put them in popular demand. I searched the country for quality fox reds with Champion lines to add to our family. I didn't realize what a difficult task this would be. There are few fox red lab breeders out there compared to the numerous others that breed the more common yellow shades. Picks are given in the order that the deposits are received, and if the particular pick is not available, then the client is given their choice of what remains, or waiting for the next litter to arrive. Deposits will be refundable until the time that the puppies are born. We ask that each family complete the puppy questionnaire, receive a response to the questionnaire and discuss options prior to sending a puppy deposit. Deposits can be made by mailing a personal check, cashiers check, or money order along with the completed puppy deposit form. The puppies are going through constant changes and at 7 weeks you will have a better pictures of what they are like. At 7 weeks of age we will do the last set of photos and do videos of the puppies. I contact each client in order of deposits received, and work with each client to match them with the puppy that fits best with their family from my observations of personality and their observations of pictures and video clips. All picks are usually made over days depending on how many puppies there are. If someone is last pick, and I feel the puppy personality is not a good match for the family I will give them the choice of getting their deposit back or carrying the deposit over to another litter. We allow our puppies to go home at 8 weeks. We will deliver within a reasonable distance, and we also offer delivery to Grapevine, TX for our Texas families. We are also now offering delivery to the Boston area on a frequent basis. Delivery fee is determined by the distance traveled and the number of clients serviced by the delivery. Puppies are dewormed at 2 weeks, 3 weeks, 4 weeks, 6 weeks, and 8 weeks. At 6 weeks, the puppies are given their first shots. PIctures are taken on a bi-weekly basis. We begin monitoring personality at 4 weeks of age. All puppies go to the vet for a health check prior to leaving us. All puppies are microchipped. Puppies come with a puppy packet that includes: A written guarantee for 26 months on hips and 18 months on eyes AKC paperwork Information on registering the microchip A ziploc bag of puppy food and feeding information A toy that has been played with by the puppy and its littermates.
