Crates can also be used in such a way as to create problems or at least make them worse. Excessive crating for long periods of time is difficult for dogs to tolerate. Their very instinct compels them to choose a place other than their "bedroom" for eliminating. Leaving a dog in a crate for a long period of time will only increase their restlessness as their discomfort finds outlet. Dogs that will ultimately eliminate in the crate can be remarkably challenging to housetrain. It's also been said that crates should not be used for punishment. This is accurate but requires some understanding of a consequence versus a punishment. By simply crating a dog to end an undesirable behavior for example, a dog fight you are able to communicate safety, security and the fact that its time to chill, in one fairly easy motion. Common fears amongst dogs include loud noises and water, and they are usually born out of bad past experiences or trauma. An anxious dog may engage in repetitive behaviors such as lip-licking, and long-term anxiety can cause stomach upsets and weight loss. Fear triggers can usually be treated with positive association training and or managed with anti-anxiety aids like supplements and thunder vests. It can cause distress, excessive whining, howling, and barking, as well as destructive behaviors towards themselves and the home. In extreme cases, it can also cause aggression. To combat and prevent separation anxiety, you should do a combination of separation training and positive association training with your Doodle. You can do this by leaving them alone for a small amount of time, and gradually building up the length of time that you spend apart. Never make a big deal when you say goodbye, but always make a fuss of them when you return. For example, do something you would normally do before leaving the house, such as grabbing your keys, and then, instead of leaving, remain in the house. Old age can also make dogs aggressive and confused , as they feel vulnerable and insecure, so they may growl or snap more easily at other dogs to warn them off. The easiest way to remedy this is to keep your dog on a lead around other dogs to keep them close to you and make them feel safe or take them to less busy locations for their daily walks. Let approaching owners know that your dog would rather not interact with unfamiliar dogs if they seem boisterous, and reassure your dog by rewarding them whenever they have a nice interaction. The tendency to be anxious or nervous can be hereditary to some extend. Fasting Fasting is always the first point of call for an upset tummy that results in either diarrhoea or vomiting. It is not recommended to give your pug small amounts of food after vomiting to see how they go, even if you feel they may be hungry. Fasting is important as it allows for the digestive tract and stomach to have a break and heal. From the time they first vomit or have diarrhoea, you should fast them for around hours before considering introducing liquid or small amounts of food. Fasting means no water or food to ensure their digestive system has a good break. Note: Watch for dehydration during the fasting period and provide small sips of water when needed. Do not fast puppies as they require much more regular sources of nutrition as they are growing. Bone Broth Bone broth is a good way to introduce some nutrients back into your pug after fasting. It is gentle on the stomach, flavoursome for your pug and will provide some great nutrition to your pug as their digestive system recovers from being unwell. Start with a small bowl of warm bone broth and monitor how they handle the bone broth. If they have been vomiting and can keep the bone broth down after fasting then you can start introducing small amounts of food. Turkey is another protein that is gentle on the stomach and much less likely to be an allergy problem. Pumpkin instead of rice is great as it is full of fibre and beta-carotene which converts to vitamin A. Whether it is part of a bland diet or added for extra fibre, pumpkin is great for your pug to help settle their stomach, ease diarrhoea and constipation. Pumpkin should always be cooked before feeding. Canned pumpkin is good to as long as it is plain and not sweetened or pie pumpkin. Slippery Elm Bark Slippery elm is an extraordinary herb that soothes the digestive and respiratory systems. It also has lubricating effects and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it perfect for helping with constipation, diarrhoea and even coughing. Slippery elm is available from health food stores and comes in powder, capsules or syrup form. For easy administering, powder is an easy option. Just mix into some water, food or even yoghurt. Mix into some water, food or even yoghurt. Adding a probiotic to their meals will help to restore the good bacteria and get them back to good health. You can add a probiotic supplement, fermented veggies, raw goats milk and our favourite, kefir. You can include natural prebiotics such as garlic, banana, apple, asparagus and dandelion. A combination of probiotics can be given for variety. Dosage varies between each probiotic. Supplements: follow instructions on the bottle. If you ever suspect there is something more going on besides a tummy bug or there are other symptoms besides just diarrhoea, constipation or vomiting, it is definitely a trip to the vet for a check up. Be sure to thoroughly clean your yard, removing all poo to minimize the number of parasitic worms living in the soil and environment. Otherwise, your puppy can reinfect herself from her own poop.
