I searched other breeders and liked that Walnut Valley allowed you to get some of your deposit refunded in case life situations changed and also let you pick your puppy unlike other places. If you are not ready you maintain your place on the waitlist which is also helpful. Jason is the main contact and he is fantastic and a good communicator. The website shows where you are on the wait list and has lots of other helpful links. Once puppy pick day arrived Jason provided videos and answered all my questions promptly. They also provide a helpful scoring system to try to match the personality of the puppy into your household. The transport went smoothly. My dog is just beautiful—amazing, adorable and smart. They also continue to support you after your adoption with a 2 year genetic health guarantee. My puppy has a little umbilical hernia which they told me about before I picked him and they will cover the cost of repairing—my vet was very impressed with that. It shows they stand by the health of their puppies. There is a Facebook page for the Walnut Valley Family who adopt their puppies and it really feels like a family you are lucky to adopt into! A reliable recall come is part of your basic obedience training. When they come to you, reward them with a happy voice and a good boy. You may want to step a few feet backward while calling him. Click and treat — push the clicker and give them their delicious reward from your treat bag or pocket. You must mark and reward them in less than 2 seconds following the behavior, which is either looking away or making eye contact with you in this case. Remember: The reward must come from a different place other than the treat in your hand. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Now, keep repeating the leave it training, as described above in step 1, until your GSD starts to leave the food with the hand alone faster. This might take a while if you have a new German Shepherd puppy or an older GSD that is not used to training or impulse control. Your dog will begin to anticipate that they have to look away to get the treat! After several repetitions, your dog might not even approach your hand to sniff or paw at it anymore.
