Hinks sought to breed an all-white dog and correct some of the physical deficiencies he perceived in the original breed. Unfortunately, breeders were uncovering some health problems attributable to breeding only for all-white dogs, so Ted Lyon began introducing color in the early 20th century. From that time on, reputable breeders have bred the Bull to be exclusively a happy if energetic family companion. So, this is a German sucker. The other names it goes by are the Pudelhund or the Caniche. What this is referring to is the Standard Poodle. They were initially bred for collecting waterfowl for hunters. They are known for being extremely intelligent as well as very good swimmers. Their funky haircuts came about to make them more buoyant in the water. While there are three sizes of Poodle they are not individual breeds just small Poodles bred to get small Papillon Poodles. They are hypo-allergenic so are good for families with allergies and are highly intelligent and eager to please which means they are good at training and learning. They are loyal and good natured dogs but highly energetic so need a lot of stimulation and exercise. Their coat can be one single color or a mix of colors. Coat Type The Poodle has a curly, long coat [9] www. It can get out of hand quickly if not properly taken care of. The Staffy has a pretty low-maintenance short coat that only sheds minimally. However, their mostly self-cleaning hair coat does leave them more prone to ticks and fleas. The combination of the two should give a medium-length coat that will require some attention. Temperament Staffypoos love people above all else. They tend to be stubborn and impulsive, but they want nothing more than to spend time with their people. If you are upset, Staffypoos will stop at nothing to make you feel better in any way that they can. They are a bright and exuberant breed who will make funny noises to get your attention or throw tantrums if they do not get their way. Oh, the joys of a stubborn and intelligent dog. Training Though stubborn, Staffypoos do very well with training and prove to be good students for a good trainer. To properly train, you must be the one to set the rules and boundaries for them to follow while still being flexible. As athletic dogs, they need a considerable amount of exercise and love to go on walks, runs, swims, and hikes. Are Staffypoos aggressive? The history of the Staffy has ensured that they are not the types of dogs to choose passiveness over action. If provoked, they will likely not back down unless taught otherwise [10] sbtca. However, the mix with the Poodle should lessen this aggression. This does not mean, though, that the majority of all Staffordshire Bull Terriers are aggressive. If properly bred, trained, and socialized, any dog can overcome streaks of aggression. It is just worth noting that half of their genes stem from a tenacious and impulsive breed that needs to be taught how to react to the unexpected [11] sbtca. Are Staffypoos good with young children? Staffypoos love people in general, but they have a soft spot in their hearts for children. Of course, correct training, supervision, and socialization are a must for those expected to spend time around children [12] sbtca. However, you would be hard-pressed to find a dog or any living thing that loves children more than a well-trained and well-bred Staffypoo. Health The Staffypoo is prone to the diseases that are found in their parents. Luckily, their risk is decreased since they are a mixed breed. Standard Poodles are at risk for gastric dilatation, epilepsy, eye disorders, and a few other issues [14] www. The most common issues found amongst Staffies are with their eyes and their joints [15] sbtca. It is also encouraged that you get your dog evaluated by an ophthalmologist, tested for hereditary cataracts, and tested for L2HGA [16] www. Cataracts and dysplasia of the hip or elbow seem to be the biggest health threats to Staffypoos [17] www. As with all dogs, they should be regularly taken to the vet for routine check-ups and vaccines. Be sure to keep an eye out! Life Expectancy The average healthy Staffordshire Bull Terrier-Poodle mix will live anywhere from 12 to 18 years of age. There is a lot of debat wether Bulldogs with non standard colors are more likely to have breed specific health problems However in my research, I could find a lot of peoples opinions but I could not find any scientific research or statistics on this subject So the next question would be: Are non standard colors more prone to health problems or are bad breeders more likely to breed non standard colors for financial reasons? In the Netherlands, we rarely see non standard colored Bulldogs, in fact, we never had one in the rescue, so I cannot judge from my own experience But here is some helpful input from our members: Jane Grace: I follow several bulldog rescues and they report seeing more health issues with non-standard coloured dogs than the regular coloured ones. They see more occurrences of cleft palates, spina bifida and hydrocephalus. The non standard colours are very sought after here in the US, unfortunately they come at a cost to the dogs by way of health. Sandra Williams: I have a Merle English and a Merle french and have had no health issues at all Andrea Phillips: We are also seeing more heart and spine defects withing color dogs. Or from breeder that has not been in business for long. Some just recently start for the money. Stephanie Fox: Many not all breeders who breed for color do so simply to make money with the color fad. They do not breed for the health of the dog. Do not encourage these people by buying faddish colors. Instead, do your research and find an ethical breeder near you, go visit the facilities and ask questions. The only concern that we have is that our dog came with Kennel Cough. An unnecessary expense that our breeder, Morgan, should have taken care of before we received our puppy. I also told her I was looking for a certain head shape and she was super willing and responsive about the sires. I emailed twice and called twice over the span of 2 months with no response. I was not pushy or unkind, In fact I led each communication with grace acknowledging that she must be busy, and still no response. This made me think about why she might be concealing information about her female bulldogs. I began to feel very uncomfortable about this business and putting a deposit down on a breed that is known for genetic health issues without any information on one of the parents. I know Morgan reads these reviews, so perhaps she will provide an explanation about the female bulldogs she breeds on here, as I was not able to receive an answer myself. I got her back in from Morgan and her helper, I'm forgetting his name, and they were both great. I had made an appointment to come check out the puppies and they let me sit with them for a couple hours before making a decision so I didn't feel rushed and definitely made the right choice. She is about 42 pounds and looks much smaller than most other bullies. Ming did have a lot of health problems her first year but I was prepared for this since everything I read on bulldogs said this was a high probability. It was life changing for Ming Ming who suffered from pneumonia a few times in her first year. She had to go to the ER a twice and a lot of the vets didn't know how to stop this from happening until I found out about that surgery. Everything went smoothly from purchase to delivery. This is an unethical business that does not represent itself in a straightforward way that plays fast and loose with their dogs' wellbeing. In we were naive and wide-eyed optimists and all too desperate to find a bulldog to join our family. We didn't ask hard questions and we came to regret it. Looking back, there were so many things that should have raised red flags. She told us that she was a breeder, and yet when we arrived she shifted the story to say that she was in the process of setting up as a breeder, and converting her space. On the phone she never made it clear that the puppies she had were from out of state, we came to find out ours was from Missouri, bred by a woman whose name we found had multiple liens against her for bad business practices. If you are wondering why I'm writing this review after so many years it's because I have had mixed feelings. Winston the bulldog is a constant joy, and I regret nothing even though he needed multiple surgeries in the months after we bought him because of a congenital hernia that every vet we saw said demonstrated that the breeder had been irresponsible. Even after thousands of dollars in vet bills, I do not regret choosing Winston, but what I regret and wish I could change is ever having supported this unethical business. We knew about the midwest birthing facility and even had someone in the 'biz' check them out. Would highly recommend them for sure. Especially if you want a medium to smaller EB. She is full of energy, personality, and fun! She is our first English Bulldog but definitely won't be the last as long as Morgan is the breeder. Luna has only needed her well visits to the vet and spaying. Do not hesitate to work with Morgan and Sugarplum Bulldogs to find a wonderful pup! Though I had never seen the breeding facilities myself and cannot speak on the quality of such, I can tell you that this is one extremely healthy, happy bulldog! Having been home two weeks now he has received an exceptional bill of health after a new puppy inspection with my veterinarian that I have been going to for over a decade, is fully crate trained, and getting consistently better potty training. That being said, I wanted to write this review in-depth because this is the first dog I have ever bought from a breeder and I had major apprehension doing so without visiting the facilities and whatnot first, but my experience has been very good start to end and I based on such I would highly recommend Sugarplum Bulldog thanks to the quality of the little guy who's now a part of my family. I can't speak for others' experiences, but I hope this and the attached images help to clear up some of the posts that made me initially question Sugarplum Bulldogs, as I am an actual owner of one and am speaking only on my experiences as such. We got our first four years ago, and our second just last week. Although our newer addition was a little sick when she arrived, Morgan was very responsive and took care of everything. Years ago, when we were looking for our first bulldog, I unknowingly talked to a couple of sellers who turned out to be selling on behalf of what I assume were puppy mills. They were high pressure selling and not very knowledgeable about the puppies except for the basics. Thankfully we found Sugarplum Bulldogs! We even already used the same vet. So when we brought our puppy in for his first vet check-up, they immediately asked if he is a Sugarplum because they know her dogs! When we were ready to get a 2nd one, there was no question we would contact Morgan! I know it is scary to get a pet sight unseen, but I would encourage anyone to talk to Morgan. She knows so much about her dogs and the breed — she is so helpful! And if there are any issues, my experience has been that she is very honest and will make it right. She was very patient with all my questions as this was my first time purchasing a bulldog. She even offered to answer my questions if I didn't purchase a pet from her. Sugar Plum works with a puppy mill in Missouri where the animal welfare laws are not strict. The dogs are then transported to VA to a nice, clean farm. You don't see the dogs that are bread and what is going on behind the scenes. We bought a puppy that had a heart murmur. We brought the puppy back and were given another puppy. She had 4 surgeries to get her to be okay before her first birthday. Our sweet baby passed away two weeks ago at the young age of four. We kept in touch with the lady who adopted her brother. He died a few weeks ago from cancer. Our friends, who we mistakenly referred to Sugar Plum, have two dogs from there. One has had two CCL repairs and the other, also 4-years-old, was just diagnosed with stage 3 cancer. Prognosis is not good. Bullies should not require surgery after surgery to make them okay and only live to be 4. Please, don't put yourself through the heartache we are going through. I made the mistake and purchased a puppy and he died 3 weeks after he was delivered to our home. His name was Bodhi and we loved him very much. .My family and I were devastated after loosing our puppy Bodhi. The night Bodhi died he was playing with his toys in the kitchen and during this time he was gasping for air. The doctors sedated him and put him on a ventilator. X ray showed no object blocking his air way. I am not a animal doctor but I believe my puppy was sickly from the day he was delivered to our home, not to mention Morgan owner of Sugerplum had my puppy delivered to us at 7 weeks old which is a direct violation of the breeding laws. I called Morgan the night my puppy died and told her what happen. Morgan did not care and she had no sympathy whatsoever. Way to go Morgan hope your happy. Who would ever think your puppy would die after 3 weeks of having him. .To everyone do not buy a puppy from Sugerplum find a local breeder who loves there animals and are not in it for the money. I absolutely love my sweet fur baby, but I would never buy from them again nor reccomend them. I am sorry my answer is brief, I am traveling. Please do not buy from the pet store, this will only support the puppy mill industry. A good breeder will let you visit their home and see the mother or the father or both parents. Their breeding bulldogs should be seen as members of the family, not kept apart from the family. They will ask you to sign a contract that requires spay or neuter if the dog is not show quality. They will give a 1 year minimum health guarantee for congenital defects. The mother and the father will be registered in AKC or CKC or equivalent, and the litter of puppies will also be registered. They will give you the name of their vet and permit you to call them and you should. They should ask you questions about your family and your home, especially whether you own or rent, if your landlord allows pets, if you have air conditioning, if you have time to spend with the dog they are family dogs, not outside dogs, and do not do well without human contact , and if you have money for future health issues like cherry eye, skin allergies, elongated palate surgery, torn ACL, etc. Not all dogs have these, but there is a pretty good chance your dog may have at least 1 ailment that affects bulldogs specifically. My breeder also gave me a list of bulldog maintenance items to have, baby wipes everyday , chlorhexidine, ear drops, benedryl, canned pumpkin, baby shampoo, a dog crate, stainless steel food and water bowls. They are gorgeous and loving creatures but they are like a baby that we don't leave alone. They usually eat high quality dog food, my lola is on raw food, which really helps with skin allergies and overall health. And, Jonathan actually arrived early here in Auburn Maine!
