While there are no guarantees, even if you have serious allergies to dander, you will do well with a curly-coated golden mountain doodle. Our Golden Irish puppies tend to be darker in color. How'd we start? Growing up my wife's family raised Pekingese. She loved their dogs and the litters of puppies that came and went. We wanted our children to have a family dog and to share the puppy experience with them and so we chose to raise Golden Retrievers. My family had a Golden Retriever growing up. My wife always dreamed of having a Golden Retriever or Irish Setter. We got our first Golden in and named her Mandy. We had 4 wonderful children ages 7 to 17 and our lovely dog Mandy. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. I was fascinated with the grace and freedom that contrasted the Irish Setter from more conventional setters in the story. He, rather, romanticized the hunt as a thing natural to the dog and foreign to the dogs human companion. Big Red knew what he was doing when he hunted. Big Red was the master hunter and Danny was his mere apprentice. Irish Setters can be strong willed. They are intensely loving and loyal but they do not have the level of automatic obedience seen in some breeds. They are majestic animals who do require some work during training to reach their potential. Unfortunately, because as the world has urbanized, the required space for an Irish Setter to shine has become rare, and this magnificent breed has seen declining popularity. Irish Setters are creatures of the open fields and the ubiquity of automobiles has ensured open fields are rare. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments. It also turns out that the grown dogs can be stunningly beautiful. We have improved our breeding over the years and no longer hesitantly advertise. If we can't fulfil our agreed timescales then of course we would let you know. Step 6 - Email Notification and photos We wait until the pups' eyes are open and the preliminary vet check is all clear. This is to avoid the situation when we have sent newborn photos and then something is wrong. We dont want to upset you, your children or us by exciting everyone too early in a puppy's development. Our mortality rate is extremely low, however occasionally, in all living animals there are congenital defects which may not be apparent until eyes open and motor functions develop. We aim to give 4 weeks notice of collection date if adopting at 8 weeks ie just after first vet check is all clear. We send email with photos or we call you. We then take more photos and send them at 6 weeks old after the second vet check. We then neuter at 7 weeks old if adoption is at 8 weeks. You must then give last vaccines at 10 weeks old to start external toilet training at 14 days after last vaccine so typically 12 weeks old when puppy first enters garden. Step 7 - Puppy Preparation Once your puppy is identified, we start diarising a collection date and start discussing puppy preparation with you. We are currently working on a puppy resource centre on the site, with help sheets to get you ready for adopting. All puppy goods we recommend are available for purchase at the time of adoption. Even if you prefer to source goods locally, then it may be worth seeing what we suggest before going too mad. We've tried and tested most canine goods and identified the strongest or best! Food can then be ordered online from us in the future, and it's couriered to your door, postage included. Step 8 - Which Puppy? However, sometimes there is more than one puppy in the litter which meets your criteria. In these cases, we send photos of the pups to families, usually around 6 weeks old, so you can express any immediate preference. We do this generally in order of when you've joined our waiting list. So if there were 3 chocolate males in the litter, then the earliest family to join would get a choice of 3; the next, a choice of 2. The third family on the list would have no choice. However, before this happens, we also try to ensure that we have taken into account personalities. So, if there was a family on the list which expressed preference for "lively" and we had a puppy which matched this personality profile - we would prioritise this match on personality before a choice on cuteness. It can be tricky occasionally balancing everyones' wishes. Despite this, in over a decade of breeding and helping families' select the right puppy, it has always worked out thus far. It is a stress point in the process but try to relax - often we frequently hear the comment "They are all lovely, I could take any of them home and be happy". In our experience, in a week you'll have forgotten about the others and simply adore the one you took home. Step 9 - Collection Day You will be sent directions to our home and we'll have agreed a time for collection. Often we have a few families collect on the same day, especially on weekends when the pups turn 8 weeks or 10 weeks old. So, if you are early, please call or text to ask if the family before you has finished. If you're running late, please contact us asap. We may be able to swap the order of families arriving. However, if you arrive outside your allocated time, then you may need to wait until the next family have left. They too will probably have travelled a far distance with excited children. We may ask that you rebook collection if you miss your time - this is because of our committment to other families and also to our 4 children. Please allow minutes for collection as we need to chat to you about grooming etc. We'll also go through what to expect for the first week as your puppy settles. Step 10 - Post Adoption Just after adoption, we organise your paperwork. We'll activate your Petplan Insurance, transfer your microchip and request to know your new name for your puppy. I have a shadow box where I display paw and nose molds that I took from Kit. Somehow, I wanted to include his puppy teeth, but in a way that would also keep the teeth from getting lost since they are so small. The mineral oil I used inside the bottle helps to magnify the teeth. I also included some little red beads and his name written on a piece of rice. Before sealing the bottle, I filled it with mineral oil. The clear oil helps to magnify the stuff inside the bottle, and it protects the fragile tooth from hitting the side of the bottle too hard if the display is jarred. I like this brand , but any type of glue should work. I just bought this at our local pharmacy. You only need a small amount. Glass Bottle: What bottle you use is up to you. You should be able to buy tiny glass bottles at your local craft store. I got mine off Amazon. Once you have all your supplies the rest is easy! Make sure your teeth are clean and dry, then put them and any addition items you want inside the bottle. Next add the mineral oil. An update — 6 years later! I figured an update was long overdue! I had to open it up, add more oil, and reseal the cork. I tried resealing it with a modeling clay, which is why you might notice some green spots on cork. The teeth inside seem to be holding up well!
