The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Here are 10 of the best Golden Retriever breeders residing in Nebraska. These are reputable breeders that produce high-quality Golden Retriever puppies for numerous families in the state. Their puppies are bred to be field masters and hunting companions as well as awesome family dogs to be around kids. The puppies get to socialize and interact with every element of the family and environment including people, other pets, textures, new sights, and also new sounds. They get to partake in waterfowl and upland hunting events. Their breeding line can be traced back to master hunting AKC registered dogs and they have achieved this through extensive research and careful selection. The chosen sires and dams all come with impressive pedigrees, They are well-rounded in temperament and health. They undergo genetic health testing through Embark and they have their overall needed health certifications for functioning hips, elbows, eyes, and hearts. The puppies all come with written health guarantees and are properly inspected and examined by a licensed professional. A good dog breeder is registered in a breeders association and breeds according to the rules and guidelines of the respective breed association. In addition to participating in beauty and performance shows at dog shows, this also includes health checks on their breeding dogs. These papers show which ancestors were involved in the development of the puppy and whether inbreeding was carried out. What makes a serious dog breed? A reputable breeder is dedicated to their breed and usually only breeds this one breed. The prices that dog breeders charge for their puppies mostly flow back into dog breeding. A profit is hardly achieved with good and species-appropriate husbandry. How do I recognize a reputable breeder? First, make sure that the dog breed leaves a clean and well-groomed impression. The following points can also help you buy puppies from a reputable dog breeder: Do all animals look lively and healthy? Do the puppies grow up in the family instead of having to live in a kennel outside? Are the parent animals on-site? Are you allowed to visit the puppies several times? Is the breeder interested in your living conditions? Would they like to know as precisely as possible where their puppies will live? Does the dog breeder take special measures to give their puppies a good start in life? For example, do the puppies get to know car journeys and train journeys? Are they used to other pets and children? Does the breeder grant themself a right of repurchase in the event that the buyer wants to give their dog back? These points are indicators of a reputable breeder. In addition, you should make sure that the puppies are not over-vaccinated and dewormed before buying. Worming treatments in particular can cause permanent damage in puppies that cannot be justified by a potential benefit. If the dog breeder is critical of your questions, that is also a good sign. Golden Retriever Breed Overview Golden Retrievers are attractive dogs with an energetic temperament and soulful gaze with expressive dark eyes. Due to their balanced psyche and benevolent disposition, they have gained a reputation as ideal family companions, and their ineradicable passion for water and craving for retrieval make them indispensable for hunting. Golden Retrievers are medium-sized, well-proportioned dogs. Although their exterior is regulated by a single standard, there is a division into 3 types in the breed: English. Dogs of this type are easily recognizable by their wide skull, powerful legs, and very light, almost white coat. Dogs of this type are distinguished by an elegant constitution and graceful posture. Tall, thin dogs of rich dark color. To choose the right pet, you should study the breed standard. Then it will become clear what the perfect Golden Labrador looks like. Of course, the puppies are still too small, so it is rather difficult to assess their conformation. When choosing, first of all, pay attention to the following signs: The Coat. Labradors have dense and coarse guard hair without waves and feathers, a thick and soft undercoat. The AKC standard allows only 3 colors: cream, golden, dark golden, and light golden. A small white spot on the chest is not considered a fault. Expression of the muzzle. It depends to a certain extent on the eyes. In golden Labradors, they are brown or hazel, expressing intelligence and good nature. The eyes should not be cloudy or heavy. In puppies under 12 weeks of age, the iris is blue. The lighter the shade, the lighter the eyes of an adult animal will be. Body type. The back is short and straight, without dips or bulges. Puppies that are overly light, weak, gaunt, or overweight should not be chosen. A characteristic feature of the breed is a thick tail at the base and tapering to the tip, reminiscent of the tail of an otter. During swimming, the tail plays the role of a rudder. During a game, the puppies cheerfully lift it, but never bend or throws it on its back. Labradors are prone to hip dysplasia. For instance, you may want to get the essential things for your puppies like grooming tools, food, and shelter. Caring For a Golden Retriever Puppy Golden Retriever puppies from good breeders do not leave for new homes until they are 2 months old. Therefore, in the early days, pets really need the attention and care of their owners. To avoid digestive problems, puppies should first be fed what they ate at the breeder. And it is better to introduce all new products gradually and in small quantities. At 2 months, golden retrievers should receive food times a day, and when they reach 1 year they are transferred to double feeding. Until the golden puppy has received all the vaccinations, it cannot be taken out for walks. Therefore, before the end of the post-vaccination quarantine in the house, it is better to remove the carpets and cover the floor with disposable floor pads. That said, their color gives luxury and both humans and even dogs have recognized their visual appeal. Pomeranians may suffer from certain health conditions and diseases but not all of them. Some of the conditions are commonly diagnosed even to other dog breeds. But if you want to have this breed, consider looking out for these common health issues that they may face. Hip Dysplasia, epilepsy, allergies typically food or skin allergies , dental problems. Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever The strongest similarity among the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Golden Retriever is they both originally raised as a hunting dor and retriever dog usually retrieving waterfowls. This breed is also affectionate and highly adaptable which can be placed in an apartment unit. Another highly active dog that needs a lot of physical activities. They are highly active and do well with a great deal of activity. Fun Fact: Great Pyrenees fossils have been found and dated between B. Flat-Coated Retriever Image credit: Pixabay You will notice quite a few similar characteristics of the Flat-coated Retriever that resemble those of the Golden Retriever. Conclusion There are many dogs similar to Golden Retrievers when it comes to their friendly and intelligent nature. These eight may not look exactly like the Golden nor act the same, but they exhibit a few of the great qualities that we love about the Golden. The source of their popularity is no mystery. After all, Golden Retrievers are loyal, intelligent, and eager to please, all of which are desirable characteristics wrapped up in a single adorable package. If people are more interested in Golden Retriever-like dogs for whatever reason, they should know they have plenty of options. Beagle Beagles have excellent noses even by dog standards. That makes sense because they started as scent hounds specializing in hares and rabbits. Nowadays, Beagles are more popular as pets. However, some remain hunting dogs, while others have found new roles as detection dogs. The AKC says Beagles are particularly well-suited for the latter because they are small, unintimidating dogs, which is beneficial when working around people scared of dogs. Of course, Beagles have other upsides that make them well-suited for working as detection dogs. They are intelligent but easy to train. Furthermore, Beagles are good-natured, even-tempered creatures that are neither aggressive nor timid. Meanwhile, these dogs are also well-suited for being pets because they get along well with children, cats, and dogs. Exceptions exist, but exceptions are exceptions. Please note that Beagles are pack animals. That means they are prone to suffering from separation anxiety when they are on their own for too long. Physical movement is also necessary for preventing inactivity-induced weight gain in these dogs. For example, they have webbed feet. Similarly, they have water-resistant coats. With that said, these dogs are supposed to come in either brown, sedge, or deadgrass. Interested individuals can use that to distinguish them from their counterparts, though this is far from being a perfect method because there is still some color overlap between these retrievers. Moving on, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers came into existence in Maryland. They descend from a pair of St. Over time, dog breeders in Maryland and the surrounding region developed Chesapeake Bay Retrievers into working dogs of remarkable ability. The same characteristics that made them capable assistants to fishers and hunters enabled them to transition smoothly to being companions. Cocker Spaniel People use Cocker Spaniel to refer to two dog breeds. One is the American Cocker Spaniel. The other is the English Cocker Spaniel. As a result, people need to know the context to avoid mistaking one of these two dog breeds for the other. Chances are good interested individuals can guess the two dog breeds are close relatives. Over time, the two dog breeds have diverged, not least because people used one to hunt Eurasian woodcocks and the other to hunt American woodcocks. For instance, the latter tend to have a narrower head plus a narrower chest. Regardless, Cocker Spaniels have earned a fine reputation for being lively yet easy-going animals. They are also much smaller than Golden Retrievers. As a result, Cocker Spaniels are a good alternative for people concerned about their dogs being too big for their homes. However, they might be related to Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. That is because Flat-Coated Retrievers might be descendants of St. John Water Dogs. If true, that would make them distant cousins to Chesapeake Bay Retrievers. Besides this, these dogs are also descendants of Newfoundland dogs, Collies, and Setters. Appearance-wise, Flat-Coated Retrievers look like Golden Retrievers, which makes sense because the two are also related. Still, it is easy to distinguish them from their more popular counterparts in most cases. After all, the most common colors for Flat-Coated Retrievers are black, liver, and yellow. The last is seen in a negative light. Showsight says yellow Flat-Coated Retrievers are not allowed to compete in conformation, which reveals much about official attitudes while saying little. Personality-wise, Flat-Coated Retrievers are confident, outgoing dogs. Their energy means interested individuals need to provide them with plenty of physical movement and mental stimulation. Otherwise, Flat-Coated Retrievers will entertain themselves on their own, which tends to mean bad things for their surroundings. Goldendoodle Sometimes, people want a dog with the best characteristics from not one but two dog breeds. As a result, they seek out designer dogs, which are just mixed-breed dogs descended from those two dog breeds. Generally speaking, designer dogs are first-generation mixed-breed dogs. The lack of universal standards means interested individuals can find multi-generation mixed-breed dogs. That is useful if they are looking for a designer dog closer to one side of its ancestry than the other. Naturally, dog breeders use popular dog breeds for creating designer dogs more than their unpopular counterparts. Due to that, there are dozens and dozens of Golden Retriever-descended designer dogs. One of the best-known is the Goldendoodle , which makes sense because dog breeders created it using the popular Golden Retriever and the popular Poodle. Still, Golden Retrievers and Poodles share a lot of personality traits. That means Goldendoodles tend to be intelligent, obedient, and good-natured dogs that enjoy human company. Put together, these characteristics make them great family dogs. Irish Setter Like retrievers, setters are also gun dogs. Regardless, setters tend to have many of the same upsides as retrievers. Irish Setters stand as proof of that. For those curious, Irish Setters are good at taking instructions because of their intelligence and their obedience. Furthermore, they are affectionate towards humans, so much so that this characteristic is included in their breed standards. They might be too boisterous for the former. As for small animals, they are hunting dogs with hunting instincts, meaning they might go after those small animals. Still, socialization can work wonders. Energetic dogs need exercise. Similarly, intelligent dogs need stimulation. Irish Setters are energetic and intelligent, meaning they need both of these things. Without one or both of these things, well, bored dogs are also destructive dogs. On top of these, interested individuals should know Irish Setters are highly sociable animals. Separation anxiety is a common consequence. Kuvasz The Kuvasz looks a bit like the Golden Retriever. However, that is rather misleading because it is nowhere near as friendly as the latter. The two dog breeds do different things even if some of their modern responsibilities overlap. Historical nomads were often pastoralists because that enabled them to bring much of their food production with them. As such, chances are good the Hungarians had both livestock and livestock guardians when they settled in the Pannonian Basin. The Kuvasz descends from these dogs, though its roots might reach even further back because of preexisting dogs in the region breeding with Hungarian dogs. In any case, Dogtime says the Kuvasz is a challenging dog. First, it is intelligent but independent because its job as a livestock guardian required the ability to make decisions without human oversight. As a result, interested individuals need to know how to take charge. Second, it takes its role as a livestock guardian very seriously. For instance, there is a real risk that it will interpret children roughhousing as an attack, meaning its owner should always be present in such situations to prevent any potential complications. Bored dogs are often destructive dogs. A bored Kuvasz can be even more problematic than most dogs in this regard because it is so formidable. Labrador Retriever Labrador Retrievers trace their roots to Newfoundland in the s. By that point, the British had already broken Labrador off of Lower Canada before transferring it to Newfoundland, so it was included in the latter. Unsurprisingly, the ancestors of Labrador Retrievers were water dogs. Yes, there is more to Newfoundland than fishing. Even so, there can be no doubt the place focused on fishing before the collapse of its once-rich fisheries in the late 20th century. That change happened when ships introduced the ancestors of Labrador Retrievers to the United Kingdom where the British nobility started breeding them with British hunting dogs. The result is one of the most versatile and popular dog breeds on the planet. For instance, The Labrador Retriever has been the most popular dog breed in the United States for more than three decades, which is a record-breaking run. These dogs are smart enough and obedient enough to make good gundogs. Those same characteristics also make them well-suited for other roles such as pets, guide dogs, and therapy dogs. Instead, they tend to be Golden Retriever-like dogs that are smaller than actual Golden Retrievers. The most common way to produce them is by breeding Golden Retrievers with smaller dog breeds such as Miniature Poodles. As a result, these dogs tend to be similar to their namesakes. Interested individuals should still be careful when seeking out a Miniature Golden Retriever. They need to know exactly what they are getting because the lack of universal standards means the name Miniature Golden Retriever is more a marketing term than anything else. Moreover, they need to check whether they can trust the dog breed or not. Fortunately, The Spruce Pets and other sources can provide them with questions to ask and other methods to gauge their chosen candidates, thus making the task that much more manageable. For context, Nova Scotia sits southwest of Newfoundland, which in turn, sits southeast of Labrador. Despite this, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever stands out by being the smallest of the retrievers, though it is sometimes confused for a Miniature Golden Retriever. Other than that, it is notable because of its role in the hunt. In short, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever is supposed to draw the curiosity of waterfowl through its shenanigans while its master waits nearby. When the prey animals approach, the hunter calls the dog back, scares the waterfowl into flying up, and then takes a shot. If successful, the dog then retrieves the prey animal, thus explaining its name as a tolling retriever. These dogs are similar to Golden Retrievers in many respects. That said, they are more cautious around strangers. Even so, exposing these dogs to new stimuli is critical. Partly, that is because they crave mental stimulation as much as they crave physical movement. However, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers also need socialization to prevent them from going after cats and other smaller animals. Henry Steinman Henry is an animal lover, pure and simple. Golden Retriever owners would be quick to tell you that no other dog breed compares to their beloved Goldens. There are, however, other breeds who bear a slight resemblance to the beautiful Golden Retriever, and who are, without doubt, equally as special in their own way. What dogs look like Golden Retrievers? Being familiar with breeds routinely mistaken for a Golden Retriever will prevent you from making an embarrassing mistake. Appearance The Golden Retriever is a well-balanced, sturdy dog with a deep chest and strong, muscular body. The head is broad with a straight muzzle that is in direct proportion to the head size. The eyes should be round and brown, though dark brown is preferred. The ears are silky to the touch and hang down close to the cheeks. The face is exceptionally friendly in appearance and gives the impression of a smiling, happy dog. The long, thick, golden double coat truly sets this breed apart. Featuring moderate feathering on the ears, neck, underbody, and front legs and heavier feathering on the back legs, chest, and tail, the coat is dense and protective. The gracefully plumed tail is perhaps the most striking feature. The Golden Retriever is, in part, named for the deep gold coloration of the coat. Interestingly, several degrees of color saturation are common. Golden Retrievers are classified as being golden, light golden, or dark golden. Various shades within each group are acceptable. For more detailed information on Golden Retriever colors, be sure to read our guide to the different types of Golden Retrievers. Size Males weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and are, on average, between 23 and 24 inches tall at the shoulder. Female Golden Retrievers are slightly smaller and weigh approximately 55 to 65 pounds. They are graceful in movement, athletic, and energetic. Goldens are known to retain a puppy-like demeanor well into adulthood and easily charm all new acquaintances. Their gentle, easy-going, happy-go-lucky temperament is truly a hallmark of this eager-to-please, loyal breed. Breed enthusiasts are adamant that there is not another breed that rivals their beloved Goldens. Similarities Both Goldens and Irish Setters have kind faces, graceful bodies of similar build, and gorgeous, luxurious long coats with feathering on the legs, chest, ears, belly, and tail. Both breeds have a sweet, kind nature, are easy to train, and, as members of the sporting group, are superb gundogs. Differences Irish setters are chestnut or mahogany in color, are much darker than Golden Retrievers, and have a thinner coat. The ears are much longer and set lower on the head. Irish Setters are larger, standing at 25 to 27 inches tall and weighing between 60 and 70 pounds. Feathering is present but to a much lesser degree. Similarities Goldens and Labs are both retrieving breeds and are very similar in terms of body structure, size, temperament, and facial expression. They both tend to have large, dark eyes and rather prominent eyebrows which make the eyes and face particularly expressive. Both breeds are admired for their loyalty and friendly, people-pleasing temperaments. Differences Labs are usually slightly larger, come in three separate colors, and tend to be more active. The most notable difference is, of course, the coat length. Love Labs? Check out some of our other articles on Labs. Great Pyrenees Often described as majestic in appearance, the Great Pyrenees was originally bred to guard and defend flocks in the cold climate of the Pyrenees Mountains. Similarities The Great Pyrenees is similar to the Golden Retriever in that he too is a large dog with an incredibly thick, fluffy coat and gorgeous plumed tail. Differences The Great Pyrenees is much larger at 25 to 30 inches tall and weighing well above 85 pounds. Great Pyrenees are sturdier, stockier, and immensely strong. While both breeds are gentle and calm, the Great Pyrenees possesses a deeply rooted guarding instinct that is not found in Goldens. Similarities The medium-length, coppery coat bears a strong resemblance to that of a Golden. Tollers, as they are affectionately called, are similar in body type to Golden Retrievers with comparable facial features and ears of similar shape and carriage. Differences The Toller is quite a bit smaller than a Golden at only 35 to 50 pounds and 17 to 21 inches tall. White markings on the head, chest, feet, and tip of tail are usually present, and the eyes are almond-shaped rather than round. Kuvasz Another breed that might be mistaken for a very light-colored Golden Retriever is the Kuvasz, a flock guardian from Tibet. Similarities Kuvasz and Golden Retrievers both have a thick and luxurious coat that may or may not contain slight waves along the back, feathering on the legs, and a wonderfully plumed tail. They are both strong, agile, well proportioned, and have intelligent, kind faces with dark eyes. Differences The two major differences are size and coat. The Kuvasz tips the scales at 70 to pounds and has an average height of 28 inches. Their coats are pure white no exceptions and the skin has heavy gray or black pigmentation. Honorable Mentions Cocker Spaniels, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, and Curly-Coated Retrievers may also be confused with a Golden, but we felt that these breeds have enough striking features to easily be differentiated from the Golden Retriever. Because they are a cross between two dog breeds, the Goberian can have any mix of characteristics from the parent breeds. They may take on more traits of one parent or have a combination of both. Goberians are a relatively new designer dog breed that tends to be friendly, affectionate, and gentle. Because they are a mixed dog breed, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club. They tend to have a gentle and loyal nature. Goberians tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can get along with other pets in the house, but may need to be introduced and socialized for it if they inherit the Siberian Husky prey drive. The Goberian is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their energy, they are best suited for larger homes with a securely fenced-in yard where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living if they get enough exercise and attention. They tend to prefer cooler climates, but they do well in just about any climate. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Despite the occasional independent streak, a Goberian thrives on affection and loves to be near their families. Plus, they tend to be easily bored, so they do not tend to do well with long periods of alone time. As with any hybrid dog breed, a Goberian can inherit all, a mix, or none of the potential health problems common to the parent breeds. Talking to the breeder about the genetic history of both of the parents and asking to see any health clearances can help ease potential concerns you may have. In general, the Goberian is intelligent and learns quickly, but the overall trainability of them will vary. They can be moderately easy to train or more difficult depending on the mix of characteristics from the two parent breeds. If the Goberian puppy takes more after their Golden Retriever parent, they will be easier to train and eager to please you. However, if they take after their Siberian Husky parent, they will be more difficult to train as they will be more stubborn and independent. Regardless, you will want to plan for puppy training classes, especially if you are a first-time dog owner. Plus, the classes offer opportunities for early socialization, which is also important. Because the Goberian is a mixed dog breed, their coat can come in a variety of coat colors. Their coat tends to be long and dense and may be straight or slightly wavy. They can range from light to moderate shedding year-round and may have two heavier shedding sessions as the seasons change. Bathing is an occasional requirement as needed and many Goberians only need a bath every months. Trimming nails on a monthly basis is usually sufficient. You want to make sure their ears are not trapping moisture, dirt, or debris that could lead to an ear infection. Thankfully, you can help prevent dental disease in your dog by implementing a good dental care plan. You can also supplement your efforts with vet-approved dental hygiene treats and chews, and even a specially-formulated dental care diet. The Goberian is a high-energy dog breed. They require a lot of daily exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. In addition to daily walks and some playtime, your Goberian is likely to enjoy running with you, going on a hike , and maybe even swimming. A fully-grown Goberian usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Goberian generally lives years. Goberian Puppies for Sale Thanks for visiting our Goberian page! Aggression is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. A professional will be able to assess the situation and help you come up with a plan to address the aggression. Other Considerations To Keep In Mind With proper training and socialization, your Goldendoodle will learn to control their biting behavior and will be a well-mannered companion for years to come. However, the key is to start early and be consistent with your training. If you allow your dog to mouth and nip sometimes but not others, they will be confused about what is acceptable behavior. In addition to that, dogs are much more likely to pick up on good habits if you teach them from a young age. Finally, be patient! Like all dogs, Goldendoodles need time to learn what is expected of them. With a little time and effort, you can help your Goldendoodle learn to keep their teeth to themselves. Of course, it also includes lots of tutorials and resources on how to tackle excessive Goldendoodle puppy biting. Do not scream or hit your dog, as this will only make them more likely to bite again in the future. This will help your dog understand that biting is not an acceptable behavior. If your Goldendoodle continues to bite, you may need to seek professional help. When Do Goldendoodles Stop Biting? So, when do Goldendoodles stop biting? This is a common question among Doodle owners, and unfortunately, there is no single answer. One of the most common questions new Goldendoodle owners ask is when their puppy will outgrow the biting phase. Typically, Goldendoodles grow out of their biting phase once they get all of their adult teeth. Until your pup has grown into all of its adult teeth, there are a few things you can do to help discourage your pup from nipping. For starters, never play rough games with your Goldendoodle that involve hitting or wrestling. These games only encourage them to bite. You can also provide them with plenty of chew toys to help satisfy their need to gnaw. Early socialization is also vital, as this will teach your puppy how to appropriately interact with you, other people, and other pets. With a little time and effort, your Goldendoodle will learn to control their biting impulses and become a well-mannered companion. If your Goldendoodle is older than a year old and still biting, there may be an underlying issue, such as anxiety or boredom. The good news is that you can easily fix the boredom issue by giving your pup plenty of attention, playtime, and exercise. With the help of a professional, you can develop a training plan that will help your Goldendoodle learn to curb their biting impulses. Goldendoodle Biting: Final Thoughts Goldendoodles are wonderful, loving companions. However, like all dogs, they need to be properly trained and socialized in order to become well-mannered members of the family. While Goldendoodles are generally friendly dogs, they can sometimes bite due to excitement, boredom, stress, or fear. If your Goldendoodle is biting, there are a few things you can do to discourage this behavior, including providing chew toys, increasing mental and physical stimulation, and desensitizing them to their triggers. If the problem persists, seek professional help from a certified trainer or behaviorist. With some patience and training, you should be able to stop your Goldendoodle from biting for good. Frozen veggies and fruit Exploring Their Surroundings Dogs have an acute sense of smell. Their heightened scent receptors drive them to explore things around them, including household items and even your fingers. Moyen Goldendoodles are smaller than Standard Goldendoodles, and larger than Miniatures. Curiosity is a healthy habit for Goldendoodles, but biting should not be part of the process. However, if your new best friend is doing damage while exploring its surroundings, you must puppy-proof your home until they learn proper manners. Playing Dogs will instinctively bite and nip when they play with littermates as puppies. If this behavior is left unaddressed, mature dogs will continue to bite during playtime. Playful biting is not always harmful, but it can be if it gets out of control as your Goldendoodle matures. A Goldendoodle getting a belly rub from his owner. The Resolution When Goldendoodles bite during playtime, you must correct the behavior immediately. Give your pet a stern no command, and offer them an alternative to biting and chewing. Some dogs respond well when owners stop playing with them after biting and leave the room. This breed is intelligent and will quickly learn that biting is not welcome. Boredom Goldendoodles are smart dogs requiring adequate mental stimulation and physical exercise. If your pet is not receiving enough engagement throughout the day, it will become bored and chew or bite. Some animals may even bite at your hands and feet to get your attention when bored. Goldendoodle with fresh haircut on a white background. Although boredom can be prevalent in the first couple years of your Goldendoodles life, it can still be a concern for some mature dogs. In addition, try offering your pet toys to help stimulate their mind, like treat puzzles and snuffle mats. These products will provide the mental exercise they need and keep them from being bored at home. Unfortunately, some dog breeds, like the Goldendoodle, are prone to separation anxiety. Goldendoodle puppy is not feeling well. This hybrid dog enjoys the company of its humans and can show anxious traits if you leave them home alone all day. The Resolution If your Goldendoodle is biting you before you leave or when you return, they may have anxiety issues. Proper kennel training and routine exercise with mental stimulation can help calm your pet down when you need to leave them alone for an extended time. Lack of Training Goldendoodle puppies are adorable, and many dog owners will let some typical puppy behaviors, like biting, slide. A boy trains a Goldendoodle at the park. This hybrid dog breed is extremely energetic and needs proper training to follow your commands. The Resolution For Goldendoodle biting that happens due to a lack of training, you can still turn it around, even with adult dogs. This crossbreed is extremely intelligent and loves to please its owners. Always remember to use a stern no command when they bite, offer alternatives, and reward them when they act appropriately. Soon, your Goldendoodle will have the proper training and better manners you want in a pet. Scared or Fearful Some Goldendoodles bite when they are scared or fearful of something. For example, if your pet is afraid of loud noises or certain people, they may lash out by biting. Behaved Goldendoodle carried by her owner. This fearful behavior can get out of control and inflict harm to people or animals without proper coaching as your dog matures. The Resolution Dogs who feel safe are less likely to bite when a frightening situation occurs. Owners of Goldendoodles that bite can use various methods to help eliminate this behavior, depending on the reason for their fright. Some ways to help your pet are: Scared of thunderstorms — use a thunder jacket. Frightened about meeting new people or animals — use slow, short introductions. Afraid of loud noises — offer a crate as a safe space with treats and positive attention. Therefore, a dog who suddenly bites its owner may have underlying health issues. Animals will do this to scare people away from handling them where it hurts the most. If your Goldendoodle bites when you try to pet it or handle it, it could be dealing with pain from an illness or significant injury. The Resolution If you have ruled out other causes for your Goldendoodle biting behaviors, the next step is heading to your local veterinarian. You want to ensure your pet does not have a health condition that is causing them pain. Your vet may conduct x-rays or other diagnostic tests to rule out physical fractures or serious illnesses that may produce pain for your dog. Final Thoughts Of course, everyone loves a well-behaved Goldendoodle, but sometimes your pet needs a little extra training and support to learn good manners. Once you can pinpoint the reason for the behavior, you can use these successful methods to keep it from happening. You may need professional help from a trainer or veterinarian, but once your Goldendoodle knows how to behave, you will have a terrific and loyal friend. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Goldendoodle puppy teeth can be painful, and puppies tend to explore the world by putting things in their mouths. Goldendoodle puppies usually stop biting when they are months old when their adult teeth have grown. Goldendoodles are bred to retrieve things, and their mouthy tendencies need bite inhibition training. Bite inhibition training should involve the same method that puppies learn with their littermates. It involves a loud squeal, stopping the play, and ignoring the puppy for up to a minute. Play dates with other puppies can also help teach bite inhibition. Giving puppies frozen fruits, teething toys, bully sticks, and engaging them with chew toys can help deter biting related to teething. Having new teeth pushing through your gums is uncomfortable, and chewing on things can help reduce that discomfort. Tasting things is also another way that puppies explore the world. Without hands or opposable thumbs, their mouth is the best way to determine the texture and firmness of an object. Additionally, Goldendoodles are the product of two breeds that were bred to retrieve things from the water. Golden Retrievers and Poodles were both bred to collect birds that hunters had shot. That means a tendency to hold items in their mouth was actually bred into them. Goldendoodles tend to be inherently mouthy, so you will have to teach your puppy to have better bite inhibition reducing how much force they bite down with during play. The younger your puppy was when you brought them home, the more difficulty your Goldendoodle may have with bite inhibition. Teaching Bite Inhibition When left with their littermates long enough, puppies learn that biting a playmate too hard causes the fun to stop. To teach your puppy bite inhibition, you have to do what their littermates would have done. Anything else — yelling, bopping the puppy on the nose, continuing to play — reinforces the biting behavior. So next time your Goldendoodle puppy bites you, think like a puppy yourself. Squeal, stop, and ignore. Play Dates Playing with other puppies is also an excellent way for your Goldendoodle puppy to learn bite inhibition. When they bite another puppy too hard, that puppy will let them know. Make sure all puppies are up to date on their age-appropriate vaccinations before letting them play together. More Ways to Stop Biting Not all biting is related to a lack of bite inhibition. Teething is a significant factor that causes puppies to want to bite and chew on anything possible. Provide plenty of chew toys in different textures and shapes. Teething oil or gel can help soothe sore gums. Play tug of war with your puppy gently. Fill a Puppy Kong with peanut butter, then throw it in the freezer. The cold will soothe their gums while they chew on the rubber, and working on getting out the peanut butter keeps their brain engaged. Give your Goldendoodle bully sticks to chew on while you are around to supervise. Bully sticks are a healthy alternative to dangerous rawhide, but puppies may swallow large pieces if left unsupervised. You need to use different techniques to manage this type of biting compared to teething or play biting. Continue doing whatever it was you were doing before the puppy started to bite you. Continue brushing your puppy while they struggle. Try to get the puppy to bite the brush rather than your hands, but still try to keep brushing. Once your puppy stops fighting and biting, reward them with praise and a treat. If you stop brushing your puppy every time they bite you, your Goldendoodle learns that biting makes bad things stop. Play provides crucial bonding between a Goldendoodle and their people. The goal is to teach them to play nicely, not to discourage playing with you at all. These things are likely to encourage your puppy to bite your hands and feet. Hitting a puppy for playful mouthing can make them bite harder. It can trigger your puppy to play even more aggressively. It can also make your puppy fear you or create real aggression. Avoid all punishments that might hurt or scare your puppy. That encourages your puppy to jump after the hand or foot and resembles play. If your puppy likes to bite your feet when you walk, you can try spraying your feet with a bite-deterrent spray like this one. Eventually, they should learn to turn that urge to bite toward their toys instead of your skin or clothing. Encourage non-contact forms of play like fetch and tug of war. Rough play with your hands tends to entice your puppy to bite. Luckily, though, there are many things you can do to discourage various types of puppy biting. With a little bit of time and consistent training, puppy bites should be a thing of the past by the time your Goldendoodle is 7 to 8 months old. Do Goldendoodles Chew Furniture? Often though, this joyful time is marred by painful nips and bandaged hands. A biting phase is all too common in puppies, but it should not be what defines your relationship. How do I get my Goldendoodle puppy to stop biting? Provide the puppy with a variety of teething aids to help soothe sore gums. Consistent bite inhibition training will teach your puppy that biting people is unacceptable, as will refusing to interact with or give attention to an actively biting puppy. Most of all, remember to be patient as your puppy gets through this frustrating and painful time. When they bite, divert their attention with a chew toy. If biting continues, walk away and ignore. Eliminate the guesswork and pick up your copy today! Unfortunately, gnawing on fingers and toes is completely normal puppy behavior. All puppies, not just Goldendoodles, go through a biting stage, but thankfully, it does not last very long. So, what causes the urge to bite and chew on everything in sight, including your poor fingers and toes? While there is likely no pain when the puppy teeth are lost, there is probably a lot of discomfort as the adult teeth push through the surface of the gums. Puppies often seek relief by chewing on anything and everything within reach, including you. Exploring Puppies explore much of the world around them with their mouths. They learn about different tastes, textures, and sizes by putting items in their mouth. They discover which items are fun to chew on slippers — delightful! Puppies naturally learn bite inhibition controlling the intensity of their bites from their littermates and their mother. This is one reason why a puppy should stay with the breeder as long as possible. When a puppy bites too hard while playing with a sibling, the other pup will yelp and stop playing. The puppy quickly learns that the fun ceases when he bites too hard. If he makes the same mistake with his mother, the puppy will receive a firm correction from her, and he will likely not do it again. Seeking Attention Puppies love all types of attention. Some quickly learn that biting leads to attention, even though it is often negative and in the form of discipline. This is called unintentional negative reinforcement. Genetic Makeup Both the Golden Retriever and the Poodle, used to create the beloved Goldendoodle, were bred to be outstanding water dogs, skilled at retrieving waterfowl. You can learn more about the beautiful Golden Retriever here. The desire to have things in their mouths was intentionally bred into them. This trait is also commonly seen in Goldendoodles, particularly puppies. As is the case with most retrieving breeds, the intense need to chew and carry things in their mouth sometimes equates to excessive mouthiness in young puppies who are still learning what is acceptable and what is not. Providing your Goldendoodle with sufficient daily exercise is a key component in eliminating unwanted behaviors, like biting. How much is recommended? Check out this article. For most puppies, the biting begins to taper off as teething come to an end, usually around 7 — 8 months of age. By this age, almost all of the permanent teeth have erupted, and the chewing, biting, and nipping urges greatly diminish. By the time your puppy has finished teething, more maturity should be evident as he nears adulthood. When do Goldendoodles typically stop growing and transition to adulthood? Find the answer here. Are Weimaraners Good Family Dogs? Is the Silver Labrador a Result of Inbreeding? Yes, he is. The Silver Labrador is very uncommon back in the day. Thus, breeders needed to breed their dogs with their close relatives to produce Silver Lab puppies. Whilst this practice of breeding Silver Labs is done to preserve these dogs, it can cause health problems within the breed. However, the inbreeding waned as the population of Silver Labradors grew. But reputable Silver Lab breeders do not condemn this breeding practice. According to research, Silver Labradors have 7 distinct bloodlines. This means they have a varied gene pool. Hence, the possible development of health problems due to inbreeding has lower chances of occurring in the past. According to breed standards, Labs should have brown- or hazel-coloured eyes. On the other hand, Silver Labradors are born with blue eyes. When a Silver Lab puppy reaches 8 months to 1 year old, his blue eye colour will gradually change to light yellow. But in rare cases, some eyes of Silver Labrador puppies stay blue. Others may also possess light green eyes instead of light yellow. Is the Silver Labrador Friendly and Trainable? The Silver Lab temperament is similar to the traditional Labrador Retriever. He is an extremely friendly family pet. The Silver Labrador is the life of the party, and his cheerfulness is infectious. The Silver Lab strives to keep his human companions happy by performing silly antics or cuddling with them. With proper socialisation at a young age , they will learn how to play and interact with children and other animals. The Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular dog breeds for its friendly personality and high intelligence. Silver Labs possess the smarts too. Silver Labs can quickly learn commands as they are eager to please their owners. By keeping training sessions short and rewarding them with praises and treats , they will do their best to carry out whatever you ask of them. Silver Labs are high-energy family dogs. They need at least 1 hour of physical and mental exercise. They are originally bred for hunting and retrieving, just like their cousins, the Golden Retrievers. Jogging, playing fetch, agility training , and obstacle course are great activities to try out with him. Consider taking the Silver Labrador out for a swim once in a while, as the breed is a natural swimmer and has an innate fondness for water. The Silver Labradors have straight and thick weather-resistant double coats. It protects them from harsh weather and insulates their bodies. With that said, Silver Labs should don doggy coats and booties if the temperature drops below 20 degrees Fahrenheit -6 Celsius. They should also be kept in an air-conditioned or cool area if the heat rises above 90 degrees Fahrenheit 32 Celsius. The Silver Labrador sheds most of the time moderately. However, it becomes heavy around spring and fall. Arm yourself with a vacuum cleaner to remove any loose or dead hair that comes off when brushing. Bathing the Silver Lab should be done sparsely , preferably once a month or as needed. Tooth brushing is advised to be done daily. Ear cleaning and nail trimming can be done once a week. The Silver Lab is a medium-sized dog. An adult Silver Lab will need around 1,—2, calories per day. He should be given around 3 cups of high-quality dog food every day. What Is the Lifespan of the Silver Labrador? The life expectancy of the Silver Labrador ranges from 10 to 12 years. With proper care and love, he can outlive these ages. Thus, it is important to provide Silver Labs with a stress-free home, adequate exercise, balanced meals, regular grooming, and human interaction. Do Silver Labs have health issues? Yes, they have. Colour dilution alopecia is a prevalent concern in many Silver Labrador owners. It is a hair-loss condition that occurs in dogs that possess the colour dilution gene. This can be treated through antibiotics. Another common health issue in Silver Labrador is hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Both are bone and joint problems that cause excruciating pain and lameness. These conditions are not life-threatening and can be cured through medication or surgery. Yes, Silver Labradors are rare in most countries as it is considered a new colour variation in the Labrador Retriever breed. Silver Labs may have become quite common in the United States, but they are still difficult to find compared to black, brown, or yellow Labrador Retrievers. Be sure to buy only from a reputable Silver Lab breeder. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. Yellow Labradors come in a surprisingly wide range of shades, from almost white, through cream and butterscotch right up to a relatively dark red, also called fox red. But traditionally, Black Labradors have always been a uniform black and Chocolate Labradors range from a medium to dark brown. However, recently there has become another color of Labrador passionately recognized by a select few breeders, yet passionately disputed and rejected by the majority of breeders in the world. There is now…arguably…a Silver Labrador Retriever. How is Labrador Coat Color Determined? Fortunately, out of the innumerable genes that make up a dog, there are only a few we must concern ourselves with to understand how a Labradors coat color is determined. You can read in good detail the basics of labrador coat color, and inheritance in litters, in the following article at the Oak Hill Kennels website: The genetics of color in Labradors. You can see this in an easy to read diagram, along with the possible litters that would result from the 81 possible mating combinations, in this informative article from labbies. And no matter the subsequent breeding, a dilute will not be found in the litter. And if mated with a DD lab, no dilutes will be in the litter. If mated with a Dd carrier, dilute labs could appear in the litter. Until perhaps the s, the silver-colored lab was completely unseen or if it was then it was probably culled at birth. However, as told by Jack Vanderwyk over at LabradorNet. So where did the silver Labrador come from? You see, a great number of kennels kept very detailed records of their breeding programs and the color of puppies they found in litters. Almost everybody strived for the blacks of the breed, but there is mention in these books of various colors such as yellows, chocolates, vitiligos, brindles, black and tans…but never is there mention of a silver, gray or dilute color dog. They seem to have appeared from nowhere! And yet 4 decades later in the s, all of a sudden, silver Labradors were being advertised for sale in gun dog magazine. For these facts, many people believe that the dilute d gene was introduced into the Labrador breed long after the standards were set. And so many believe the Silver Labrador Retriever simply cannot be a pure bred Labrador! Do They Contain Weimaraner Genes? The major belief is that the dilute d gene was introduced into the breed by cross breeding with Weimaraners. This breed always carries the dilute d gene and have the distinctive silver, gray or dilute color. A Labrador has the look, temperament and disposition of a Labrador and not a Spaniel or a Mastiff simply because the breeding lines are kept pure. The very idea of a breed standard is to set out a blueprint for the breed that all must adhere to. The very essence of the Labrador breed is only maintained by the strict attention to the pedigree and blood lines of Labradors by dedicated and responsible breeders. If people started to introduce genes just to change the color of a breed then this whole system would break down. There would be no pure breeds, just cross breeds or mongrels. It will be interesting to keep an eye on this story as it unveils in the coming years. The American Kennel Club allows registration of silver Labradors as chocolate. This is mainly because most silvers not all as explained later are a diluted chocolate color. The controversy surrounding the origins of the color, with the possibility of Weimaraner genes having been introduced angers them. But breeders of the Silver Labrador argue that it is a pure bred Labrador. In many cases, the ancestry can be traced back through a few generations of pedigree dogs and the silvers litter mates are registered as pedigree, so the silvers should be able to as well. They are not a recognized color, but if they come from registered parents, you can also register the puppy. Fears Of In-Breeding In The Silver Labrador Gene Pool Due to Silver Labradors having been very rare in the early days of their history, the breeders had no choice but to breed their dogs with very close relatives to attempt producing silver litters. The gene pool was so small, they simply had no choice. Inbreeding though can cause a wealth of problems when it comes to the health of such dogs, as it can in any small gene pool. However, a study by LabradorNet on the Silver Labrador retriever population revealed that since , the population now has a relatively decent and varied gene pool. That said though, fears still abound that the inbreeding of the past has damaged the health of these dogs. Certainly caution should be exercised when sourcing a silver lab, by checking the ancestry and health of its parents before buying. But this should be done by all prospective owners before buying any puppy. Reaching nowhere near the numbers of the traditional colors, they are nonetheless far easier to find than they were perhaps 15 years ago. Indeed, a Google search will show many fan pages and breeding kennels dedicated to the Silver Labrador. The prices charged for a silver compared to the blacks, yellows and chocolates only adds to the anger of the traditional colors breeders, causing even more controversy and dislike toward the Silver Labrador breeders. What Are Your Thoughts? Do you think the Silver Labrador should be recognized as a color of its own? Are the higher prices justifiable? After all, they are in comparison to other colors fairly rare, especially in the UK. Let us know your thoughts on the controversy surrounding the Silver Labrador Retriever in the comments section below. Are you still yearning for more information about Labrador Retrievers? german shepherd puppy not listening - We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. It is, therefore, no surprise that some breeders are starting to mix the two. Considering whether a German Shepherd Lab Mix is right for you? Read on for everything you need to know about this amazing mixed-breed dog. Lab German Shepherd Mix Overview Size — 22 to 25 inches tall and 50 to 80 pounds Coat — Medium length, double coat, color varies Shedding — Yes Temperament — Intelligent, active, and loyal, but can be wary of strangers Trainable — Highly, but prone to destructive behavior when bored Activity — Highly active needs two hours of activity per day Best For — Families and people with active lifestyles and lots of time to spend with them What is a German Shepherd Lab Mix? As these dogs are roughly the same size, the mother can be of either breed as long as she is larger than the father, to ensure against any difficulty in the birthing process. Sheprador Appearance As is the case for most mix-breed dogs, it is a bit of a gamble what you will get when these two come together. They might have the pointed ears of a German Shepherd or the floppy ears of a Labrador. There is nothing to do but wait and see. But luckily, both German Shepherds and Labradors are attractive dogs, so however they turn out they should be handsome. That said, we can make a few generalizations about the appearance of Shepradors. Size As both German Shepherds and Labradors are medium- to large-sized dogs, you can expect their mixed offspring to be the same. German Shepherds are the larger of the two and are usually between 50 and 90 pounds and 22 to 26 inches tall. Labradors are only a little bit smaller, at 50 to 80 pounds and 22 to 25 inches tall. So expect your German Shepherd Lab Mix to stand between 22 and 25 inches tall and weigh 50 to 80 pounds. You can narrow this range down a bit by looking at the size of the parents. Color The color of these gorgeous mixed-breed dogs is also highly variable, and you might end up with a pooch of a solid coat color, like Labs, or striking mixed coloring, like German Shepherds. A lot of this depends on the color of the Labrador parent, whether they are yellow, black, or chocolate. As a general rule, the darker the lab parent, the darker the coat of the pup. But you also get white German Shepherd Dogs, which can result in striking white Shepradors. Coat When it comes to coat length, you should expect in most cases that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will have a shorter coat, like that of a Labrador. This seems to be a dominant gene, and the vast majority of German Shepherd Lab Mixes end up with this type of coat. The dog will certainly have a double coat, as this is a feature of both breeds. The undercoat will be soft and fluffy, and the guard coat rough. This does mean that they shed—a lot. This is not the type of dog to have at home if anyone in the household suffers from allergies. Shepherd Lab Mix Puppy Lab German Shepherd Mix Character While temperament is again unpredictable with mix-breeds, both German Shepherds and Labradors are intelligent, active, and loyal dogs, so you can expect their offspring to share these traits. German Shepherds are very intelligent and have a natural protective instinct. They have a tendency to guard whatever they consider to be theirs. Labradors were originally bred as gun dogs, to retrieve the wild game of hunters. As such, they are very obedient and tend to be pleasers, and they like nothing more than spending time with their humans. As both breeds are intelligent and highly trainable, you can expect these characteristics to appear in a Sheprador. However, whether they will be a guard dog that can be aggressive with strangers, or a pleaser that is great with children, you will have to wait and see. While dogs are a mix of nature and nurture, if you want to take a Lab German Shepherd mix into a family home, or if you are a first-time dog owner, you will want to be careful about which individual dog you choose. Activity Levels However their personality turns out, you are going to have a dog with a lot of energy. These larger dogs that are used to working need around two hours of exercise each day. Their intelligence also means they get bored easily, and when they do get bored, they can have a tendency toward destructive behavior, which means digging and chewing. They do best with active owners with whom they can go walking, hiking, and running. Whether these dogs will like swimming is a coin toss. While Labradors love the water, German Shepherds are a bit more wary. But their size and adventurous nature mean they can be trained to love the water. So you have a good chance that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will be a swimmer. These dogs are loyal and love being around their humans. You will find them at their happiest and healthiest when you make them part of the family and shower them with love. Exercise Ideally, your Sheprador will need around two hours of exercise per day. This might be more than just a long walk, as their high energy levels mean they will like to run as well. They will enjoy tackling tough trails with you at their side, and the retriever nature of Labradors also means this breed is likely to enjoy a good game of fetch. Bear in mind that these dogs will need this level of exercise rain or shine, or they will become frustrated and start engaging in destructive behavior. This is not only bad for them in general, but can put excess pressure on their hips, which are also prone to issues. Intellectual Stimulation German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs are invariably highly intelligent, which makes them easy to train but also means they get bored very easily. When they do get bored, they are smart enough to find trouble, and you may come home to quite the scene. These dogs need to spend time with people to occupy their minds, and they also benefit from intellectually stimulating games. But expect them to make short work of these challenges, as they are chewers. You will be getting them new games quite often. Companionship Labradors need a lot of companionship, and this is a trait their offspring with German Shepherds are likely to share. Not only will they get bored and start acting up, but they can become depressed. Grooming Both German Shepherds and Labradors are shedders, so you can be sure their Sheprador offspring will be as well. This is just a fact of life with Shepradors. They will need to be brushed at least twice a week, and as often as once a day during the shedding seasons fall and spring. As well as brushing, invest in a good quality vacuum cleaner that has special functionality to help you pick up dog hair. These dogs are also likely to enjoy jumping up on the couch for a snuggle and a snooze. Invest in coverings and be sure your swanky vacuum cleaner has an attachment for upholstery. Their coat is not the only part of their grooming to attend to. You need to clean their teeth three times a week, with a brush or with dental treats. Finally, trim their nails every three months. This is both for their health and the health of your home, as their nails can damage your floors. For a big dog like this, it can be a good idea to take them to the vet to get their nails clipped. But if you feel confident to do this at home, check out our list of the best nail clippers. Diet German Shepherd Lab Mixes are big dogs that have lots of energy, but they also have a tendency toward obesity, which means they have to get their energy from good sources. This means high-quality protein and fats over carbohydrates. Preferably this means meals made from quality meats rather than meals or byproducts. When looking at the ingredient list, look for named meats at the first ingredient. Lab German Shepherd Mixes also benefit from novel proteins in their diet, as they can be prone to allergies. Dogs tend to develop allergies to the meats they eat the most, which often means beef and chicken. When they are puppies, Shepradors should be fed three times a day, and this should be cut down to two times a day from about four months of age. As a rule, dogs need 25 to 30 calories per pound of their weight per day, though you should watch their individual weight and energy level to see if you need to adjust their meals up or down. You can also check the label on your dog food to get a rough estimate of how much you should be feeding your Sheprador. Of course the amount will also vary depending on how often you exercise your dog. Known Health Problems While there is no limit to the number of health problems that a dog of any breed can develop, or they might not develop any at all, some dog breeds are more prone to some conditions than others. German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs have the potential to develop the health problems that are common in goth German Shepherds and Labradors. These include: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia — This is a condition where the hip and elbow joints do not develop normally and that can cause extreme pain and arthritis in later life. For more information check out our list of Glucosamine for Dogs. Progressive Retinal Atrophy — This is a group of degenerative diseases that affect the eyes and can lead to blindness. Shepradors are also prone to eat whatever is put in front of them, so you need to be conscious of what you are feeding them. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus — Poor diet can lead the stomach to dilate and expand, in turn leading to a twisting of the stomach that is life-threatening. It can block the flow of blood to the abdomen, leading to rupture of the stomach walls, and put pressure on the diaphragm thereby inhibiting the lungs. Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy — This is a condition that affects the spinal cord and leads to progressive weakness of the hind limbs, and eventually paralysis. Panosteitis — This is an inflammation of the outer surface of the long bones in the legs, resulting in a shifting lameness and making bones more susceptible to breaks. Allergies — Dogs can be born with allergies or develop them over time. Dogs often develop allergies if they eat the same foods consistently. Underactive Thyroid — The thyroid manages hormones, and an underactive thyroid is unable to secrete the required hormones. This can result in weight gain, lethargy, and cold intolerance. At this time, their energy levels will drop and they will need some changes in their diet and exercise. GSD Lab Mix Puppy But no matter how well trained they are, if they are left to get bored for too long, they can engage in some pretty destructive behavior, such as digging and chewing everything in sight. You have been forewarned. The highly assertive nature of German Shepherds means they do not respond well to domination training. They are likely to revolt when subjected to punishment. The best way to train a Labrador German Shepherd Mix is through positive reinforcement. Labradors are pleasers that love to make their humans happy. This means their offspring are also likely to feel the same way. So they will respond rapidly to training based on rewards for positive behavior. Deal with this behavior early, with specific training for dealing with children and strangers. They are very active and need lots of attention, so they need to be in households that support this. But they do great with adults and kids, so they can be a great family pet. Remember that German Shepherd Labrador Mixes need around two hours of exercise every day, so they need someone who can commit to that level of activity. But at the same time, it means they are the type of dog you can take on all of your adventures if you like hiking and trailing. They also need attention and stimulation throughout the day. If anyone in the house suffers with pet hair allergies, this is another reason Labrador German Shepherd Mixes are not the right dog for you, as they shed a lot. Consider something like a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle instead. Also, ask for medical records of the parents, to see what health conditions the pup might be prone to in the future. If you decide to adopt a mature dog, spend a bit of time with them to see what their temperament is like. History of the Breeds German Shepherd German Shepherds originated in Germany in the late 19th century as a sheep herding dog. But, because they are very intelligent, trainable, obedient, and strong, they have since moved into many different working roles including police, military, search and rescue, and disability assistance. German Shepherds can have a reputation for being aggressive, but they are more alert and wary than aggressive. They can have a tendency to become overprotective of family and territory. But if socialized and trained properly, this tendency should be highly manageable. German Shepherds are the second-most popular dog in the United States and the seventh-most popular dog in the United Kingdom. Labrador Labradors, also known as Labrador Retrievers, were initially used in Newfoundland as fishing dogs to retrieve fish that had gotten away. Because they are incredibly friendly but also intelligent and therefore easy to train, today Labradors are favored as disability assistance dogs, often helping individuals with blindness, ptsd, mobility issues and autism. Labradors are the most popular dog breed in the United States. They are intelligent and therefore easy to train, and loving and loyal, so they will quickly feel like part of the family. However, they do need a lot of exercise and attention, so adopting a Sheprador into your family is a commitment. German Shepherds have a reputation for being aggressive, but it is not really deserved. They are natural watchdogs and reserved around strangers, but they are not aggressive dogs that are likely to attack. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which means easy to control. Beagles, Poodles, Boxers, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels are all extremely friendly dogs as well, many specifically bred to be companions. They do best with active people or families who are full of people to love them. Like all dogs, they will do their best when they are cared for properly. This means training them appropriately, exercising them, keeping them mentally stimulated, and feeding them well. But these loyal pooches will repay your care and commitment with a lot of love and affection. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. For a list of all the supplies we get for our new service dog puppies check out our New Puppy Checklist on the PuppyInTraining. Your growing dog should maintain a healthy weight because extra weight can be an additional weight on its spine. The ideal dog nutrition will also depend on any nutritional needs of your dog. If you are training your dog, never give treats as a reward. This encourages obesity and will only cause more problems for your dog. Lab German Shepherd Mix Training The Lab crossed with a German Shepherd is a brilliant dog, but it may need more than simple traditional training techniques to train this dog. The following tricks will help you make your dog obey you in no time. The Clicker Technique Learn how to train your dog using a clicker. Press this, and you will hear an audible click, a sound that dog loves very much. The clicker may be used in all kinds of tricks, but the most common is for positive reinforcement. Just click the clicker when your dog can follow the trick and then click again if you want to repeat the behavior. Invest in a good clicker which is available in most pet stores online. This can contribute to obesity and other health problems related to being overweight. Reward good behavior by patting your dog, playing with him or giving him a good scratch. Tell your dog what a good dog he is and combines this with a lot of pats as reinforcement. Every dog takes his time so you must be patient. His bed should at the same place where he found it the first time while his food bowls should also be in the same area. Consistency is the key to training dogs important stuff. Also, consider talking to everyone at home regarding your rules and commands to reinforce consistency in training your dog. Train Your Dog In A Familiar Environment Dogs like the Lab are easily distracted; therefore you must train your pup in a quiet and familiar environment first before you take him out for further training. Start inside a quiet room with only you and him. You can train him outdoors once he is less distracted to noise and the presence of other pets and people. You may also opt for professional training for your Lab German Shepherd mix dog if you want your pup to grow up and become a service dog or police dog. German Shepherd Lab Mix and Families Lab German Shepherds can be great family dogs because these dogs love to be with their masters and to please them every way they can. These are patient with children and will never roughhouse or bite. They can even tolerate toddlers and very intense games like dress up and role play games. Lab German Shepherd mix dogs will love to be with other pets and even other dogs. They are not domineering and will never cause a fight. The Lab German Shepherd mix may become anti-social and may become aggressive with people or other dogs when they are not introduced to people and other pets early on. Your dog should be trained first and exposed to other dogs and people to prevent this untoward behavior. German Shepherd Lab mix puppies German Shepherd Lab mix dogs are a combination of energetic friendliness and natural protection. As well trained adults they have the potential to make great herding, hunting, retrieving, therapy, service or pet dogs. German Shepherd Lab mixes are affectionate with their family, but need plenty of exercise, shed heavily, and can be destructive if left alone for long periods. That is, they have one parent of each pedigree. So there is huge variation in how they look, and no standard appearance. Some have the telltale muzzle and tall ears of the German Shepherd, others more resemble a Labrador. The color of their coat will depend on the coloring of their parents. For example, a black Lab German Shepherd mix is likely to have a dark coat, and a German Shepherd yellow Lab mix is likely to have a mid-toned coat. There are even arresting-looking white German Shepherd Lab crosses. An ultra-warm undercoat and a coarse outer coat to protect them from the elements as they work outdoors. This is because the gene for long coats is recessive and very unusual among Labs. Gathering up their lost hair will be a never-ending task! A good vacuum cleaner is essential. This might be reason enough to choose a different crossbreed if you have a busy family or someone with allergies in the home. German Shepherds are large dogs. They stand 22 — 26 inches tall at their shoulder blades, and weigh 49 — 88 pounds. Meanwhile, Labs are a medium sized breed, 22 — 25 inches tall at their shoulders, and 55 — 80 pounds on the scales. A Labrador German shepherd mix could be as petite as their smallest parent or as big as their largest parent. Your German Shepherd Lab mix could weigh anything from 55 pounds to 80 pounds. As usual, the lower end of the range is typically made up of female dogs, and the top end is dominated by the boys. They love to interact with people, show their affection, and get on well with children. Also, the German Shepherd is confident, courageous and smart. They are loyal and full of life. Furthermore, Labradors and German Shepherds are both fast learners and eager to please. German Shepherds in particular need productive ways to channel their intelligence, or they will get into mischief to stave off boredom. Your German Shepherd Lab mix could inherit any combination of the traits of their parents, which is why meeting both parents before committing to bringing home a puppy is so important. Socialization Socialization is the process of making a dog comfortable with other animals, people, places and activities. Even for breeds that are known to be friendly and easy-going, like Labradors, socialization is very important. German Shepherd Lab mixes are likely to inherit a love of people and company from both sides of their family tree. But socializing them properly as puppies will be vital to give them the confidence they need in meeting new people. German Shepherds, despite their great loyalty to their family, can be wary of strangers. So thorough socialization from puppyhood is essential, even for a mix. For instance, Socialization can involve having new people call over to the house regularly so your pup gets used to new faces and voices. It can also involve introducing your puppy to new dogs, cats, children and other animals so that they do not become fearful or territorial. A young dog in good health could require even more. They will also need human company for much of the day, and training to keep those big brains from getting bored. They are working dogs at heart. Highly motivated to learn and impress you with their ability to follow instructions. Like with any dog, training them is an ongoing commitment that lasts a lifetime. But with your ultra smart dog it should be a satisfying and rewarding one. German Shepherd and Labrador Health Magnification of health problems in pedigree dog breeds has become a well-documented problem. Labrador Health One of the biggest health problems facing Labradors today is hip and elbow dysplasia — looseness in the joints that eventually leads to painful arthritis. Another is progressive retinal atrophy, a gradual failure of the retina at the back of their eyes that can ultimately leave them blind. Also, Labs are also notoriously greedy, and prone to obesity if their penchant for snacking is indulged too often. Another less serious but common issue in Labs is ear infections. These are easily treated but may require veterinary care and frequent inspections. In addition, they are more than usually prone to: Gastrointestinal diseases. Shedding is a must in German shepherd lab mix puppies so brushing is extremely important during the shed season. You may also bathe them once in 2 months keeping in mind the weather condition in your hometown. Cutting nails can be good but you can choose to trim them as it would not be a good idea to cut nails thoroughly. These include the type of food that your dog is used to eating, the ingredients in the food, and the size of the dog. German Shepherds are bred as working dogs, so they are typically used to eating food that is high in protein and low in carbs so does labrador. A diet that is high in protein and low in carbs is a good fit for a German Shepherd lab mix as well. One thing to keep in mind is the size of the food. The German Shepherd lab mix is a large dog, so a diet that is too small or too heavy might not work for them. Small meals can make your dog lazy and heavy meals can lead to bloating. A balanced diet is a key to keeping your dog happy and healthy. You can also make proportions of a heavy meal that can be given multiple times a day. Experts consider feeding your dog a fresh meal is way healthier than giving them a processed meal. If you are still confused then you can consult your vet because he will prescribe food according to the size and health of your dog. Fun Facts: This dog is extremely energetic and active. He will not let you rest once you start playing with them. If he takes after the Labrador side, he will chew everything that comes his way So better keep your favorite stuff hidden from him. Constant dominance-based training does not work with GSD lab mix dogs. While training them you must think out of the box and present some creative methods of training. This dog can be your best guard dog, the reason is that both the parents are excellent guard dogs and loyal to their homes. In the United States, Labrador is the number one favorite and famous dog while the German shepherd is the second number. Breeders decided to take advantage of it and crossed these two breeds. Both German Shepherd and Labrador shed heavily due to their double coat, Therefore their pup will also have heavy shedding during the season. However, there are some things that should be considered before getting one. Knowledge is power and it will be a good time for you to get the best dog to have the best time in life. The German shepherd lab mix is the ultimate family dog, so before adopting one, make sure you have time to spend with this energetic breed. Because Labrador loves to be around its human, so does its mixed puppy. They will be at their best if you keep them happy by showing love and affection and keeping close. They might go bananas if you do not spend enough time with them, and they may also show destructive behavior such as starting to dig or chewing things around. This can also increase anxiety levels and make your dog depressed. They love kids and are great companions. They are good with other pets in the house if you introduce them in the right way. Keep other pets away from this dog. If you see their aggressive behavior, They might not like them sometimes. They get bored too easily due to which they need constant mental stimulation. Keeping the German shepherd lab mix clean, and timely walks and activities can improve the overall health of the dog. Brush them often as their shedding is high. German Shepherd Lab Mix Exercise: As mentioned above this breed is restless and super active for which it is important to keep this dog tired. Exercising this dog is one of the vital factors. The German Shepherd is a super active dog with full energy. On the other hand, Labrador is also an energetic dog so we can predict their mixed pup will also have these traits. Regular walks to the park are essential. They can be your great companions for hiking, swimming or running. Most people are confused if a German Shepherd Labrador mix can swim? Of course, they can swim because of their Labrador lineage. There is one thing that you should keep in mind that you have to train them for swimming and introduce them to pools. Because they are easily bored, try to play different games. Games that have purpose and are effective for physical and mental stimulation. Before adopting a dog, always make sure you are doing justice to them in terms of weather. There are some dogs who are a good fit for summer and who do well in winter but if we talk about German shepherds and Labradors they both are not good for hot weather. As a matter of fact, they both love winter. You may notice German shepherds are super happy during the winter season and lazy during hot weather. The same goes for Labrador. German Shepherd Lab Mix is a double-coat dog who would love to open up during cold times of the year. They are extra playful and joyful under the snow. New owners have this confusion they might feel cold in the snow while in reality, it is the opposite, They enjoy the snow more than humans. This time is the best time when you can play with your dog and train different activities. They may also show you a high energy level and excitement while training and exercising. As we all know positive energy emits positivity, you will also feel fresh and energetic if you spend some playtime with your German Shepherd lab mix. Did you know they may get heat stroke if they are kept outside during the daytime in hot weather? There are cases where the owner kept the German Shepherd outside during hot weather and the heat results in heart failure in the dog. There are extreme cases as well. This is because the German Shepherd is a large dog with a double coat and cannot tolerate heat for a long time, and so does the German Shepherd lab mix. If you are in a country where the temperature goes high then better not to adopt a dog who has a double coat. Also, if there is mild Summer Heat in your hometown, You may take care of a German Shepherd lab mix pup by providing them with enough water all the time so they can stay hydrated. Do not leave them outside and keep them under the shade. This way you can protect your mixed breed from many problems caused by heat. Siren is just 11 months old and he is a super strong dog. Because Jessica knew he was going to be a big dog, she knew she needed a little help training Siren. Siren is 85 pounds in this picture. So, what problems did Jessica need help with? Jessica just needed to learn how to handle him around other dogs, because he got excited when they would go for walks. She was nervous about him becoming aggressive around other dogs. I see this a lot with new dog owners. Sometimes when a dog gets excited when they see other dogs, most people think their dog is aggressive. As long as your dog is not trying to kill another dog with deep growling and barking and lunging out at the end of the leash, baring its teeth trying to bite anything that moves. I find most of the time they just want to play. This was not how Siren was acting. He just started to pull on a leash when he saw another dog and wanted to play with other dogs. Jessica needed to learn how to stay calm and not get nervous. When a dog is being walked by its owner, and the owners get all tense up and nervous, your dog will sense that you are feeling this way, and more likely to get into conflict. You must remain calm when you are walking your dog. As a German Shepherd dog trainer, I see this behavior all the time. This behavior is so misunderstood in the dog training world today. Now, that Jessica had four weeks of group class training with other German Shepherds, she has learned how to stay calm without getting tense up and nervous. She got the confidence training she needed to have no worries anymore with her dog. Most of the time they were in the backyard and then they snuck outside the fence and become wandering the streets looking for food and water. Jackson was picked up on the streets of Miami Florida.
