The Labradoodle is one of the most popular doodles and makes a great addition to any family. My Labradoodle Max is a bundle of joy and excitement. It is essential to teach your doodle restraint without breaking its spirit. Easier said than done, I agree, but this is a breed that is easy to train. The bonus- they are intelligent and eager to please. The Labradoodle is a boisterous pet and requires some daily physical activity to help it expend energy. Walking is a great way to build its strength and help it socialize with other animals and people. It can calm an over excited Labradoodle and even help stop a Labradoodle that likes to chase your cat. Exercising your Labradoodle is part and parcel of taking good care of it. Remember that this is a breed with boundless energy. So, the more you exercise them, the less likely they are to be bored or destructive Your Labradoodle should be made to follow a schedule from the beginning. Labradoodle puppies are very energetic and need minutes of activity daily. This will, to some extent, help in exerting their energy. For a LabradoodleYou can combine minutes of walk with 10 minutes of a fun game of catch twice a day to help burn up their pent up energy. A daily walk is also an excellent way to bond with your pup. Remember to consider the age of your pet while deciding on an exercise routine. Compared to a puppy, a young adult will need more vigorous exercise. An older dog may not have the stamina for long excursions. Ten minutes of walk or a quick game of fetch should be more than enough for such older dogs. Anything more will tire them. In other words, if not a planned exercise schedule, ensure that they have plenty of time for physical activity throughout the day like running around the yard with the kids, swimming, playing fetch, etc. As with humans, your Labradoodle will also show signs of a sedentary lifestyle: The most obvious is an increase in weight, especially if it has been coupled with a poor diet. An overweight pet is at the risk of several conditions that can affect its health, including joint problems, back problems, and heart and lungs issues. If your dog is overweight , you may have to consult a vet for appropriate exercises to help it lose weight. Lack of exercise will also make your pet restless since it is unable to exhaust the pent-up energy. Barking continuously for no reason or destroying things around the house are signs of restlessness brought on by lack of exercise. If muscles are not exercised enough, they lose their strength, leading to stiffness and movement difficulty. Dogs with low physical activity have been known to suffer from diabetes. Other factors, like diet and energy levels, also play a part. You can, however, follow some general guidelines: Puppies between 10 weeks to 5 months can safely do a minute light walking. Puppies are not very strong yet, so make sure there is no strain on their legs. The walk is to get them used to it and build up their stamina. Bigger puppies between 4 and 8 months could do up to 30 minutes of daily walking and intermittent sprinting, followed by a few minutes of rest. Between 8 and 12 months, your pup has developed more endurance and stamina and can walk for up to minute once daily. You may follow it up with a short walk towards the end of the day or before bedtime. Adults Labradoodles are those between 12 to 18 months and are fully grown. They are strong enough and will enjoy at least an hour of medium-paced walking each day. Some may prefer a bit more or a bit less, but that should not cause worry. Older dogs will typically have less energy than they had when they were younger. But it is still important to keep them physically active daily. These can be shorter strolls or a walk on the beach or in a park. Not only will it keep them fit, but it will also help relieve any age-related stiffness. After they are trained, the walks can be off the leash. Labradoodles are very sociable and enjoy meeting with other dogs and humans as well. A ball or frisbee can be an excellent outdoor toy to train your Labradoodle to stay fit and focused. Keep their walking routine interesting. Change your route every other week if possible to allow your pet to experience new scenes and unique scents. Instead, early mornings or late evenings after sunset are good times to walk your pet, especially during hot summers. It also pays to keep a bottle of water handy for your pet. Hypothermia can happen to pets too. Play indoor games when it is freezing outside. Keep your doodles warm and make sure they are well fed since winters tend to make them hungry, just like it does to us, humans. The walk can wait for a few days until your pet is back on its feet again. Play a fast game of fetch. This can be done in your backyard or open ground. A quick game of ball in the garden will also help give it an oxygen boost. Playing indoor dog games and activities. This is perfect for slightly grown-up puppies. They will enjoy chasing a ball down the hall and bringing it back to you for more. A puzzle toy filled with his favorite dog food is an excellent option for any size or breed. This game can be scheduled during his snack time. Make sure that the puppy does not choke on its chow. In times of excitement, a dog can choke in its food! You can freeze a stuffed Kong for example and it will distract and exercise your Labradoodle for a surprising amount of time! Quick training sessions with a series of sit-downs, stays, or whatever else your pet has learned can challenge its thinking, reinforce good behavior, and its instructions following capacity. You can also try teaching them something new. This is a very intelligent breed. If your Labradoodle loves to follow you around, walk all over the house and let them follow you. Do it a few times, and you will see that your pet now knows where you are going next. You can also play hide and seek while doing this. Hide some treats throughout the house while playing hide-and-seek, and let your dog find them. This helps them discover and learn new things. This is essentially housework or scent training. Try a simple nosework game like the muffin tin game for dogs. If your dog understands instructions, have him go and find your kids or spouse. Swimming is an excellent exercise for all, and dogs are no exception to this. Socializing with other dogs can also benefit your doodle mentally and physically. Furnishings for Labradoodles roughly translates to… a moustache! Young pups should not be made to perform stunts, too, since it can impair their joints and cause serious issues. Puppies are also used to frequently change their walking pace, sprinting one minute, trotting the next, and then standing still looking around. If your pup is forced to maintain a steady pace for a long time, it can damage ligaments and immature joints. Playing outdoors for a short while or short walks on a leash will provide your puppy with a safe amount of exercise. Making them do the same mechanical movement for extended periods will also cause boredom and dislike for that activity. Humans may be creatures of habit, but dogs are not. This will prevent it from running into oncoming traffic, which may end up having disastrous results. It is always better to err on the side of caution where your pets are concerned. Similarly, be that protective shield against any other dog trying to threaten him. To Summarize Where the oodle dog is concerned, the more the activity, the happier the dog! Labradoodles make lovable companions. They love playing and spending time with the humans in the family. This is why they quickly become an integral part of the family. How often should you walk a Labradoodle? At least once per day and minutes depending on age and other activity. This is a breed that is also great with kids- loving and gentle. Your local veterinarian is your best resource when determining the proper exercise regimen for your specific dog. So many health problems in Labradoodles have obesity as a cause or contributing factor such as cancer, kidney disease, arthritis, and heart disease. Behavioral issues like jumping, barking, and destructive behavior are often made worse by lack of physical activity. Labradoodles tend to be an easy breed for trainability. Keep in mind, sometimes too much of a good thing can be bad. Until your dog reaches their full height and weight, their joints are still developing. Too much exercise or too vigorous of activities can mean life-long bone and joint problems for your Labradoodle. Getting your Labradoodle the proper amount of exercise for their size and age may decrease their risk of many health issues, but there are no guarantees! Puppies are curious, energetic, and love to play. However, their joints and bones are still just beginning to develop. Vigorous or extended periods of physical activity can permanently damage their development. One thing puppies and older dogs both have in common is that they require lots of rest throughout the day for their bodies to recover. Larger dog breeds, such as the Standard Labradoodle, tend to need more physical activity than their smaller counterparts. On the other hand, smaller dogs like the Teacup, Toy, or Mini Labradoodle sizes may need less exercise as adults, but they finish developing quicker. A Teacup Labradoodle, for example, may be done growing as early as months in age. At that point, more strenuous activities like jogging and hiking can be incorporated in addition to longer exercise sessions! Have a question to ask a veterinarian? Click here to be connected via live chat to a real, verified veterinarian! As always, keep watch for signs of injury, heat exhaustion, or fatigue no matter how old your dog is. Be on the lookout for signs like excessive panting , drooling, or laying down. Personality While Labradoodles tend to be an active breed in general, each dog has a unique and individual personality. Some dogs are naturally couch potatoes while others are born to be athletes! Genetics play a role in this and as a result which generation of Labradoodle your dog can make a difference. In general, the closer in DNA your puppy is to a Labrador Retriever, the more high-energy they will be. That being said, you should expect and be prepared for a Labradoodle of ANY generation to be high-energy. Labradoodles that are over-exercised may show physical symptoms like sickness, limping, or avoiding going outside. While walking, they may pant excessively and choose to lie down instead of continuing. On the other side of the coin, if your Labradoodle is being destructive or unusually naughty, more exercise may be a good way to calm them down. Exercise combined with mental stimulation does wonders for obedience training! Still unsure about how much exercise your Labradoodle puppy should be getting? However, they grow quickly to their full size so they can ramp up their physical activity early on. When you bring home your Toy Labradoodle puppy at around 8 weeks, start them off with 10 minute play sessions or short potty-break walks times per day. Each month older they get, you can add 5 additional minutes to their daily exercise sessions. Still have them occur times per day as needed. When they reach a full year old, they can start their adult exercise requirements of minute sessions, once or twice every day. For example, two 45 minute walks would be great. An hour walk and a 15 minute game of fetch in the backyard would do as well! When they reach their golden years, scale back the exercise a little to minute sessions once or twice per day. Mini Labradoodle Puppy Exercise Requirements Mini Labradoodles still can have a lot of energy despite their small statures! For the first 3 months, exercise your Miniature Labradoodle in 10 minute sessions times per day. When they reach 4 months in age, you can add 5 minutes to their maximum session time. When they reach their first birthday, you can ramp up their exercise to minute sessions occurring once or twice per day. At 18 months in age, a Mini Labradoodle is likely full-grown and you can increase their exercise to the adult level of minute sessions, one or two times each day. At years old when they start to slow down a bit, ease up their exercise routine to minute sessions, once or twice a day. Remember, getting plenty of rest is key for the health and happiness of older dogs. Standard Labradoodle Puppy Exercise Requirements Standard Labradoodles are large, active dogs and need a lot of exercise. However, due to their growing joints, they need to be eased into this exercise very slowly. Have multiple, short timeframes for walks or play each day to use up their puppy energy! From months in age, 20 minute exercise sessions are appropriate times per day. From months old, increase that to 25 minutes, once or twice a day. When your Standard Labradoodle reaches 18 months in age, they can have minute exercise sessions once or twice a day. Plan for around hours once or twice a day. Combine walking with other activities and games for best results! As your Standard Labradoodles ages and becomes a senior, reduce their exercise to minute sessions, times per day. Remember, the lifespan of a Standard Labradoodle is shorter than the Toy and Mini versions of this breed. While walking is by far the most common way to exercise your puppy, there are so many more options to consider! What type of exercise your Labradoodle puppy partakes in is just as important as how long they spend doing it. Opt for lifting or carrying your pup when possible. Keep your games of fetch low-impact. Long Hikes — Hikes are normally fairly lengthy. Safe Exercise Ideas for Labradoodle Puppies Play Dates with Other Puppies — This not only provides a great opportunity for physical activity, but socialization as well! Here are a handful of creative ways to sneak in some fun physical and mental activity for your pup! Snuffle Mat or Ball Instead of feeding your Labradoodle out of a bowl, try using a snuffle mat or ball on some days! This makes them use their sense of smell and creativity to find it and get to it! It may not seem like it uses a lot of energy, but mental stimulation can be just as tiring as physical activity! There are lots of wonderful snuffle toy options available on Amazon and Etsy. However, if you prefer to make one yourself, we have a simple DIY snuffle ball tutorial here! Hide and Seek This is an easy, fun game for both you and your dog! Start with some easy locations and watch your pup search until they find you. Once they understand the game, start hiding in harder spots to give them a challenge! Tug of War This is a time-tested game that most dogs naturally love! It also does a great job of helping them reach their Labradoodle exercise needs! They also do an amazing job of incorporating obedience training concepts that will make your dog naturally better-behaved. How Far Can a Labradoodle Walk? When your Labradoodle reaches their adult weight and height, they can walk miles comfortably as long as their stamina is built up. Particularly as a puppy, it can be a real balancing act getting them enough exercise while not overdoing it. More About Labradoodles…. Energetic and playful, a Labradoodle does require a fair amount of walks and exercise every day. Labradoodles need at least two hours of exercise each day to burn off the excess energy these dogs are known for having, and you can split up the two hours into two or three separate walks. If you have to regularly leave your Labradoodle home alone for a period of time because of work commitments, always aim to schedule the first walk before you set off for work. Several factors will determine the time needed to walk a Doodle. If you and your Labradoodle live in an apartment , for instance, the lack of space and no regular access to the outdoors would mean three walks a day would be necessary. Dogs need exercise to help support cardiovascular fitness, stronger muscles, bones, and decreased stress and overall well-being. Routine Like any dog, Labradoodles like routine. As mentioned earlier, if you do have to go out in the morning, take him before you leave. Try to get a brisk walk in in the afternoon when you arrive home from work, and a simple toilet trip on the night before bed should be enough to keep your Labradoodle happy and content. When you arrive back home from taking your dog for a walk, leave it thirty minutes before you feed him. Exercising your Labradoodle before or straight after eating a meal could cause your dog to bloat. Mix it Up Taking your Labradoodle to the same place every day for his walks will soon become boring for both you and your pooch. Try to vary the walks once or twice a week. If you are restricted to only a few places, try to take a different route to break up the monotony. Remember to take a ball, a favorite stick, or even a frisbee. But is the opposite also the case? When humans first started breeding dogs they were used for work every day. They could be anything from guard dogs to hunting or tracking dogs. But no matter what they did there was one thing they had in common, dogs had a purpose with their lives, and they were proud to be able to do the tasks they were meant for. Most dogs no longer have the tasks that they used to, and what this means is that the typical working dogs no longer have their instincts and behavior stimulated naturally. These days the vast majority are regular family dogs where all they have to do each day is eat and sleep. Of course, a lot of dog owners do a good job of stimulating their dogs physically, but mental training is often overlooked. Many dog owners have the mistaken idea that as long as a dog gets its food, sleep, and physical exercise, they will get a happy and satisfied dog. Mental Stimulation But dogs are intelligent animals. A Labradoodle is one of the smartest dogs , and they have a need for mental stimulation that is equal to their need for physical exercise. Without the adequate amount of mental training, you will most likely never succeed in getting a happy and satisfied dog, but will most likely end up with serious behavior problems. Let me show you an example of why lack of mental stimulation could be a big problem. If you frequently take your dog for long walks or hiking adventures, the dog will get its physical demands met pretty easily, and quite well. But if you fail to challenge its mind, your labradoodle will end up feeling bored. Try to compare it to the needs of a human. We all need a certain amount of physical exercise to keep going, but most certainly we also need to be stimulated mentally. We do that by either reading a book, watching a movie, solving a puzzle or just by surrounding ourselves with other humans. What would happen if somebody told you to just go for a walk instead of watching a good movie? Or to go hiking instead of having a nice dinner with great food and wine? We need socialization and mental stimulation before we would call ourselves truly happy. And that is the same thing when it comes to our dogs. And it is really easy to combine mental training with physical training, and here is how you can do that. Try mixing up the afternoon walk with different fetch games, or some hide-and-seek. All these things help stimulate your labradoodle both physically and mentally. Hurried walks Try bringing your dog to a busy area like the local supermarket or the parking lot of the nearest mall. Try spending minutes there before returning back home. During this time your dog will receive plenty of new impressions from smelling, hearing, and seeing lots of new and interesting things. There might also be a pet store of some kind in your area where you could bring your dog. Bring your dog with you If you have to go for a short drive to fill up your car on gas or going to buy that winning lottery ticket, why not bring your dog? For a human, a minute drive might seem boring and something you just have to get done with, but for a dog, this is a way to experience a world of new sounds and smells. Try taking your dog out of the car and onto the parking lot, and allow it to go number one somewhere around there. This also allows your labradoodle to leave a few interesting new smells for the next dog that might feel like stopping by. Labradoodle Exercise Needs So even though a Labradoodle has reasonably high exercise needs , following the advice above should give you some tips on how you can do it. And at the same time, I can almost guarantee that you will also end up as a healthier and happier person. Just like your Labradoodle. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. Here are some benefits that daily exercise does for your doodle and you: Strengthens respiratory and circulatory systems Helps get oxygen to create new cells Wards of obesity Keeps muscles tones and joints flexible Helps digest Whether you live in an apartment or on a farm, start regular exercise and feeding patterns early at an early age, so your dog gets used and adapts to his and your daily routine. Daily exercise helps to keep your Labradoodle healthy, happy, and free from disease. Labradoodles generally require medium exercise. But there is no one-rules-fit-all solution. The amount of activity or exercise that each dog will need varies tremendously. It depends on several factors, including size , temperament, energy level, your living condition, whether you keep him with other dogs, and importantly what he is used to. According to the Vets, you should take your labradoodle out for at least one decent walk every day. Even better if you can take him out two or three times daily. A miniature Labradoodle will need at least 30 mins of exercise every day, while a large one will need at least an hour or more. Labradoodles are not lazy by nature. It will be an advantage if you have a fenced garden or yard so your doodle can burn off some energy between walks. You should not get a Labradoodle or any dog if you cannot commit at least one walk every day with your dog. Dogs like routine, but remember, there are strict guidelines to stick to with puppies. It is important not to over-exercise them, particularly with large breeds and crossbreeds like the standard Labradoodles. While their bones and joints are developing, they cannot tolerate a great deal of stress. So, playing Frisbee or fetch for hours with adolescents or puppies is not a good option. You will end up with a dog with health issues and a pile of veterinary bills. Establish a Routine Establishing a routine at an early age is a good idea. Try to get your dog used to exercise at the same time every day that fits in with your daily routine. For example, take the dog out after his morning feed , then perhaps a long walk in the afternoon or when you come home from work and a short toilet trip the last thing at night. Daily exercise could mean a walk around the block, jogging on the bike path, playing fetch the ball, or swimming. Labradoodles love all these activities. Swimming is an excellent way for dogs to exercise in the summertime. A lot of Vets suggest a small water tank not only for remedial therapy but also for canine recreation. Your Labradoodle will dash in and out of the water all day if you let him. Just remember that swimming is a lot more strenuous and tiring for dogs than walking, so do not over-stretch him. Whatever the routine you decide on, your dog should be getting out on a walk at least once a day, and you should stick to it. If you begin by taking your Doodle out three times a day and then suddenly stop, then he will become restless and start to seek attention only because he has been used to having more exercise. Same way, do not take your dog on day-long hikes unless you trained him for it. The dog will probably struggle. Medium and larger Labradoodles may make suitable hiking or jogging companions, but they will need to build up gradually to that amount of exercise. These activities are not ideal for puppies. Exercise for Older Dogs Older dogs also need exercise to keep their body, joints, and systems functioning properly. They will need a less strenuous exercise than younger dogs but still enough to keep them active, alert, and healthy. Physical and Mental Stimulation Labradoodle need sufficient exercise for their physical well-being as well as their mental well-being. They are very intelligent dogs, and without adequate exercise, they can become bored and restless. It can result in behavioral and attention-seeking problems, and some of them may become destructive. Before, experts used to recommend training dogs when they are one year old, but that has changed now. You can start training your Labradoodle from the day you bring him home, even as early as eight weeks. Boredom through lack of exercise or stimulation leads to bad behavior. This is one of the reasons why some Labradoodles end up in rescue centers, through no fault of their own. On the other hand, a Labradoodle that gets plenty of exercise is a happy Doodle and a wonderful companion. It does vary depending on whether you have a Miniature, Medium or Standard Labradoodle, and their energy levels. Labradoodle puppies have different temperaments, and some will be livelier and need more exercise than others. Puppies require much less exercise than fully-grown dogs. If you over-exercise a growing puppy, then you can overtire and may even damage his developing joints. This can cause early arthritis and other issues. The golden rule is to start slowly and build it up. The worst danger is a combination of over-exercise and overweight when the puppy is growing. Increase the walking time slowly as he gets used to the exercise. It will gradually build up his muscles and stamina. Once he becomes adult and fully grown, he can go out for much longer. Puppies have enquiring minds. Make sure that your puppy can exercise every day in a safe and secure area. As I mentioned earlier, your labradoodle can get used to an exercise routine. If you overstimulate and regularly exercise him as a puppy, then he will think this is the norm. The Key is to start a routine that you can follow. Note Do not take your puppy outside until his vaccination is complete, and it is safe to do so. Start with short walks on the leash every day. An excellent guideline is five minutes of exercise x per month of age up to twice a day until the puppy is fully grown. Exercise Tips Never exercise your dog on a full stomach. It can cause bloat, particularly in large dogs. You should not take your dog for exercise within an hour before or after eating. Do not throw a ball or a toy repeatedly for a puppy, as he may run to fetch it to please you. He thinks it is a good game, but he may become overtired and damage his joints, pull a muscle or strain his heart. Most Labradoodles love swimming. Swimming is an exhausting exercise for a dog. It can be great fun for him to fetch a ball or stick, stop the activity after a while. Repeatedly retrieving from water may cause him to overstretch himself. If you over-exercise your dog, it can place a strain on his heart just like humans. The best way to train him to retrieve while he is young. Give him praise or a treat when he brings the ball or toy back to your feet. No related posts. Labradoodles are a popular crossbreed between Labrador Retrievers and Poodles. Labradoodles are moderately active dogs that require regular exercise to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. They generally need about 1 to 2 hours of exercise per day to meet their needs, this depends on their fitness and their size due to the variation in labradoodle sizes. This exercise should include activities that allow them to burn off energy, such as walks, runs, interactive play sessions, and time to explore safely in a securely fenced area. For Labradoodle puppies, exercise should be tailored to their age and physical development. It's important to provide age-appropriate activities and avoid excessive high-impact exercises that could strain their growing joints. Short, controlled play sessions and gentle walks are suitable for young Labradoodle puppies. As Labradoodles mature into adults, they can handle longer and more challenging exercise routines. Engaging them in mentally stimulating activities, such as puzzle toys or obedience training, can also help keep their intelligent minds occupied. Labradoodles may have a low-shedding or non-shedding coat, making them potentially suitable for individuals with allergies. Grooming needs may vary depending on the type of coat your Labradoodle inherits. Regular brushing, at least 2 to 3 times per week, is essential to prevent matting and to remove loose hair. Professional grooming every 6 to 8 weeks can help maintain the coat's appearance and manage its length. Like any dog, regular tooth brushing with a dog-specific toothpaste twice daily is ideal. Every dog, including the Labradoodle, needs a minimum amount of exercise. It is just as important to not over-exercise your dog or make him perform the wrong exercises. Typically, a Labradoodle needs an average of 60 minutes of exercise per day. In this guide, I can help you determine how much exercise your Labradoodle needs according to its age and weight and what kind of exercises work best for them. As a dog lover myself, I consider it very important that canine pets get the right amount of exercise that can help them maintain optimal health. I have owned several breeds of dog since I was a child and have gotten excellent insight into how much exercise a dog needs. Age The biggest factor that influences how much exercise your Labradoodle needs is age. Puppies are balls of energy and want to spend all their time playing. However, since their bones and joints are still developing, it is not a great idea for them to perform aggressive exercise or exercise for longer periods of time as that can impact their physical development. As a responsible pet parent, you need to help them set limits and guide them in the right direction. On the other hand, senior labrador dogs need much less exercise than younger dogs since they develop mobility issues and have much less energy. Size What size your Labradoodle is also plays a big role in how much exercise they need. Standard Labradoodles will naturally need more exercise than their smaller versions like the teacup and mini Labradoodle. Toy, teacup, and mini Labradoodle will need less exercise, even as adults but they will achieve their full size earlier at around 7 to 12 months. Your vet can help determine when your pooch has stopped growing and whether it is OK to integrate more vigorous exercise like hiking into their workout regimen. No matter how old your pooch is, though, you need to keep a lookout for signs of injury or exhaustion, like panting, drooling, or lying down. Personality Like humans, Labradoodles also have unique personalities. Some are balls of energy, while others just love to spend their time lying around. Genetics also play a big part in how active your dog is. If your pooch is closer in DNA to a labrador retriever, it will have more energy. However, most Labradoodles of any generation have high energy. As a pet parent, you will need to learn about the unique personality of your puppy and figure out the exercise needs that best suit them. If your Labradoodle is excessively energetic and is always getting underfoot or causing disasters in your home, this can be a sign that he needs more exercise to release the pent-up energy. Labradoodles are highly energetic dogs that require a good amount of exercise to keep them healthy and happy. Typically, a Labradoodle needs anywhere between 30 minutes to 2 hours of physical activity each day or an average of one hour, about one to two times a day. An adult Labradoodle can exercise for 1 to 2 hours for one to two times a day. The exact time varies according to the type of Labradoodle you have. If you have a mini Labradoodle, it may require 45 to 90 minutes of exercise once or twice a day. For a standard-sized Labradoodle, an exercise of 60 to minutes once or twice a day is sufficient for it to remain healthy. Labradoodle puppies should, of course, be exercised less than fully grown adults. You can calculate how much exercise a puppy needs by multiplying its age by five minutes. When you bring home an 8 week old Labradoodle puppy, you should start them off with 10 minutes of play sessions or very short walks one to three times a day. Typically, a three-month-old Labradoodle puppy will need 15 to 30 minutes of exercise. A four-month-old Labradoodle puppy will need 20 to 40 minutes of exercise, a 5-month-old Labradoodle puppy will need 25 to 40 minutes of exercise, and a 6-month-old Labradoodle puppy needs 30 to 60 minutes of exercise. Keep in mind that too much exercise can also be bad for your puppy since their joints, muscles, and bones are still growing. Therefore, walks in the park, dog toys, and some free playtime are good ways to help your Labradoodle puppy work out. Once your furbaby reaches 8 years of age, they will have entered their golden years. As your dog ages, he will slow down. After the age of 7, your dog will not have as much energy as he had when he was younger. He might also start to develop problems with mobility and other health issues. That is why you need to slow down and reduce their exercise requirement. If you are taking out your dog for a walk and you notice some changes in his walking pattern, it is a good idea to let your pooch set the pace. This way, when they start to slow down, you will know when it is time to go home. If you have taken good care of your Labradoodle in his younger years, it will be able to do 30 to 60 minutes of moderate activity per day. For senior dogs, low-impact exercises like walks in the park and swimming are the best kinds of activities. This can lead to a variety of health issues like heart disease, diabetes, high cholesterol, kidney disease, arthritis, and cancer. In addition, lack of physical activities will also result in behavioral issues like destructive behavior, excessive barking, scratching at doors or furniture, too much jumping, or more. Too much exercise is also not in the best interest of your Labradoodle, particularly if he is a puppy or reached his senior years. Many owners also wonder how much and what types of exercise they should be doing with their Labradoodle. We created this exercise guide to help owners understand the proper amounts of activity to keep their pups healthy and happy. The exercise levels and different activities appropriate for dogs change as they grow and develop. Recommended Exercise Time — How long should you exercise your pup? We give rough guidelines on how long Labradoodles should exercise. How much is too much? At this stage, they will want to explore their new living environment. Be sure to puppy-proof the main area they will be spending their time in and remove anything that might be dangerous to them. It is important to monitor their activity with kids, people, and any other household pets. It will decrease the chances of your beloved pooch becoming overly anxious or simply overwhelmed. The puppy should be in a safe environment at all times. This is where crate training can make a huge difference. It not only allows you to keep your puppy safe, but it can expedite housebreaking tremendously. See which crate I use with my own dogs and highly recommend in this article. Recommended Exercise Time It is crucial to follow some common-sense exercise time recommendations for an 8 week old Labradoodle puppy. Keep intensive exercise sessions short at 10 minutes or so. Some terrific age-appropriate exercises and game ideas for young puppies include: Slow and easy walks for short distances on a leash. Free play in the backyard for a minutes. Short indoor walks through the house. Relaxed play with some of their smaller toys may start introducing fetch by rolling a ball. Cuddles and one-on-one interaction. You can take a look at toys we recommend here. What To Avoid You want to be careful not to overwork your pup. Here are some examples of exercises or activities that would be too much for a puppy: Expecting your pup to keep up with you when running or jogging. Having your puppy play with young kids for longer than a few minutes. Having your pup climb lots of stairs or run up steep hills. This is when the dog begins to develop their tiny ligaments, tendons, and other small body structures. At around 14 weeks up to approximately 26 weeks of age, your bouncy Labradoodle puppy is continuing to develop their skeleton and joints. This development is so important, and dog owners might notice that their pup appears more tired than usual during these initial growth spurts. It is crucial to ensure that your puppy is getting the proper nutrition and proper rest to aid in their normal growth process. Recommended Exercise Time Like other dog breeds, there are recommended exercise time limits for 3-month-old Labradoodle puppies. At this stage of their young lives, Labradoodles can usually handle up to 15 minutes of more vigorous exercise levels two to three times per day. Your puppy should be settling into a normal daily routine, and new activities should be initiated every so often to keep these curious and energetic puppies from getting bored with their lifestyles. This dog breed is obtained by blending Labradors with Poodles. The resulting Labradoodle puppy typically inherits the higher intelligence levels that these breeds are known for. This pack of toys makes it easy to keep your puppy interested. They were favorites of my dog when he was a puppy, and he still enjoys them today. No products found. Initiating more activities into their daily routine also helps to keep their minds sharp and focused. Dog owners should be sure to monitor any new activity, game, or exercise to help prevent their puppy from overexerting themselves. New activities should be introduced slowly. These can be increased as your puppy masters the task without any adverse reactions. This comes from their hunter and retriever ancestors. Gradually, hide it out of sight, then direct your dog to find it. Other appropriate Labradoodle activities include teaching your pup tricks that build on their backgrounds. Are they easy to train? Find the answer here. Playing fetch with a ball, Frisbee, stick, or other objects is something that your dog might find simple to do. Advanced Tricks — Shake, roll over, or even dance. Start easy by making noises to give them clues. Tug-of-War — Be sure to keep it gentle and stop if your pup starts to use their teeth. Encourage Water Games — Most Labradoodles love to swim, so exposing them to water early can be a fun way to keep them fit. Just be careful not to get water in their ears. Nose-Work Games — Hide some of her favorite treats and encourage using her nose to find them. Make sure they are current on their shots and friendly! What To Avoid At 3 months of age, your favorite puppy is still young and growing fast. Like people, your dog will need the right amount of sleep and relaxation time following these harder activities. There are many exercise options that should be avoided or put off until a later date. Extended periods of running or jogging. Lots of jumping up and down from things like the bed and couch when playing. Back-to-back sessions of exercise without proper time for rest and hydration. It is appropriate to increase their daily level of exercise on a daily or regular basis, but it should be kept in check with what the puppy is able to safely perform. This should be implemented 2 times a day for safer results. Dog owners should always keep in mind that their puppy is still undergoing a lot of growth during this first year, and activities should be added as the dog matures and masters the beginning tasks. Water Activities — Explore more water activities , like dock diving, swimming, fetch balls from water. Visit Dog Parks — Great for additional socialization. Introduce Agility — Build a simple dog agility course in the backyard. Advance Learning — Teach your pup how to find colors or identify their toys by name. Hikes — Explore the environment more and take them on hikes or even camping. In fact, your dog prefers to use his intelligent brain to try and solve all of those challenges that their favorite people in their life often give them. While your pup might be beginning to look like a full-grown adult, in reality, their bodies are still growing with many important body systems still in development. Recommended Exercise Time The owners of Labradoodles still need to carefully shield their loyal pets from overexertion due to too much or too intense physical exercise. At this stage, your dog should be pretty good about self-moderating their exercise. At months, 30 minutes of exercise two to three times daily should be good. When owners do not include plenty of mental stimulation for their pet each day, Labradoodles become bored swiftly. The danger here is that these ever-resourceful dogs will gladly find something within their reach to keep their minds occupied resulting in chewed table legs or shredded pillows. Here are some extra activity ideas to work in: Increase the complexity in some of their nose-work and hide and seek games. Change the route you take on your walks to make things more interesting for them. Change the pace of your walks. Add to your outdoor agility course or enroll them in agility classes. Teach them how to bark on command. However, your dog will still likely gain weight for approximately 6 more months. Of course, Mini-Labradoodle breeds will have smaller sizes respectively than their larger counterparts. A routine of 30 minutes of exercise two to three times daily should be continued. As they age, you may need to cut back on certain physical activities that involve lots of jumping and excessive running. Here are some things to look out for: Stiffness when they walk. Hesitation for normal movements, like standing or running. Generally seems overly tired or fatigued. Weight loss. Not urinating enough a sign of dehydration. Tries to avoid normal activities. Increase in destructive behaviors, such as chewing, biting, excessive barking, digging, or scratching. Weight gain. Common Exercise-Related Injuries in Labradoodles While Labradoodles from reputable breeders are typically healthy, there are some inherited health conditions and exercise-induced injuries owners should be aware of. Labradoodles can experience injuries due to overexertion and too intensive exercise sessions. These include muscle sprains, tears or stiffness, joint damage, tendon or ligament injuries and painful muscle spasms, as overworked muscles break down and secrete toxins into the bloodstream. Exercise Cautions Important exercise cautions for Labradoodles include waiting at least 1 hour after eating before playing or exercising. Owners should also wait 30 minutes following a walk or exercise session before feeding their dog. These measures help to prevent gastrointestinal issues like bloating from occurring. Related Questions: When can a puppy jump? Twelve months is around the time their growth plates have fully closed. If they jump excessively before then, especially from bigger heights, long-term damage can be caused. Is jumping bad for a puppy? Labradoodle puppies that jump too early can do long-term damage to themselves. Any jumping before that age risks long-term damage. Common jump-related injuries include hip and other joint problems along with torn tendons. How soon after a dog eats can they play? Wait at least an hour after eating before letting your dog play to avoid gastric distress and bloating. Additionally, wait approximately 30 minutes after physical exercise before feeding your dog. Labradoodles are friendly, smart, and make wonderful family pets. This physical exercise guide for Labradoodles can help owners keep their dog safe and healthy during exercise sessions. It is truly a must-have for all owners and anyone considering this awesome breed. Well, even if your Labradoodle puppy seems active and hyper , the truth is that they actually need to sleep for a lot of the day at this young age. Puppies need plenty of good, quality sleep to help their brains and bodies develop. So, ensuring your Doodle gets enough sleep is just as important as ensuring they get enough exercise. On average, Labradoodle puppies should be getting around 18 to 20 hours of sleep a day. So, you only have 4 — 6 hours left for your puppy to play, exercise, learn, and eat. The Dangers of Over-Exercising Labradoodle Puppies As well as the need for lots of sleep, too much exercise can result in bone and joint damage, or can hinder development and growth. Labradoodles come from two large and hard working breeds. But, they are also prone to certain joint issues, including hip and elbow dysplasia, and arthritis. Routine exercise can include walking, running, or even an energetic game of fetch in the backyard. But, throughout the day, your puppy will also get exercise from following you around the house, training sessions, playing inside, and playing with other doggy playmates. Many puppies also have a burst of energy at least once a day when they race madly around for a few minutes. This is often referred to as the zoomies. Like all puppies, your Labradoodle explores the world with his mouth and nose. When he first comes home with you, everything he experiences is going to be new. And, exploring his or her new home will take a lot of energy in those first couple of weeks! So, you might find that formal exercise is the least of your worries in the first week or two. The best type of exercise for Labradoodle puppies will depend on their age, and on protecting their joints. Why Age Matters Most Labradoodle puppies will be fully vaccinated by 12 weeks. But for some, it may be a little later. If your Doodle comes home with you at 8 weeks, this means you have an entire month where exercising outside is unsafe. Putting your pup on the ground outside where other animals can go can put your Labradoodle puppy at risk of diseases like parvovirus, canine distemper, and leptospirosis. As they get older, you can not only go outside with your puppy, but also increase the amount of time you spend exercising them. So, a short walk could turn into a lovely long hike or swim once your puppy is over 6 months old. Protecting Their Joints The other factor that influences the best type of exercise for your Labradoodle puppy is the need to protect their joints. Whilst puppies are young, their joints will be at their most vulnerable, still undergoing a period of development. But, the type of exercise you let your puppy do can also have an impact. For instance, one study recommends that puppies under 3 months of age should not be allowed to use stairs, as this can potentially increase their risk of hip dysplasia. So, whilst your Doodle is still very young, calmer forms of exercise are going to be best, particularly things that can be done on flat surfaces. Why is Exercise so Important for a Labradoodle Puppy? All puppies and dogs need a certain amount of routine exercise, and the Labradoodle is no exception. In fact, Labradoodles will need more exercise and mental stimulation than some other, less active breeds or mixes. Exercise is important because puppies are active, playful, and curious. If they are bored, they can become destructive and get into trouble. Proper exercise will help to reduce problematic behaviors like chewing, potty training accidents, and hyperactivity. Remember, keeping your puppy well rested is just as important as meeting their exercise needs. Exercise Can Improve Health On top of the benefits of exercise listed above, proper exercise will also help to keep your Labradoodle puppy physically healthy. Exercise will help to: Regulate their weight Strengthen bones and joints Aid in overall healthy development Best of all, consistent Labradoodle puppy exercise routines go hand-in-hand with training and socialization. Exercising Your Labradoodle Puppy Without Going on a Walk There are plenty of ways you can give your Labradoodle puppy exercise without taking them on a walk. In fact, since very young Labradoodle puppies need around 30 minutes of exercise a day, you can achieve this by just investing in a few good toys. Here are some fun game ideas to try out with your Labradoodle puppy: Play fetch in the backyard Create obstacle courses in your lounge avoid steps if under 3 months Play tug in the house Play hide and seek with some smelly treats Teach your puppy some new tricks Labradoodles are very intelligent and will enjoy learning and exploring. So, when exercising your Labradoodle puppy, work to implement structure and rules. Walk or exercise your Labradoodle around the same time each day, even if the exercises or games are different. But, avoid anything that clearly scares your puppy. Remember that the world around him is new, and every experience can have a major impact on his well being as an adult dog. Along with some added mental stimulation, this will make future walks much easier and more enjoyable. Even if your puppy is waiting on vaccines, you can still begin leash training at home. Gently encourage your Labradoodle to love the leash and harness by introducing it gradually. Pair it with some tasty treats and lots of praise. Once your puppy is happy with getting the harness and leash on and off, practice taking a few steps in the home and backyard. Remember, your puppy is a puppy, and all of these behaviors are normal! The best way to help him learn as quickly as possible is to keep walking sessions short, fun, and game-like. You can even start on the basics of heel with a training course. Have you already mastered polite leash walking, or is that something you and your Doodle are still working on? Related Articles. Learn more here or other smaller breeds. You can always check with your breeder and vet, but as tracheal collapse can happen in miniature poodles, for miniature Labradoodles this is a preferred collar type. A loose leash walk is the ability to walk your dog at your pace without him pulling you along. The dog is accustomed to staying near you and letting you take the lead. This takes some training and practice. There are a few ways to train a dog to do this. Among them are working with no leash and rewarding them for staying nearby. Other methods include gently encouraging them to stay at your pace with the leash. For example, if they pull forward you can stop, cheerfully call them, and take a few steps back. It will not happen immediately in most cases. In the end, she will naturally follow you along and at your pace. They typically love the water and are natural swimmers. As a retriever breed, a nice game of fetch is always a good idea! Remember that each puppy is an individual. Regardless of his size, parents, and breed, each puppy will have his own personality. How long do Labradoodles live? Some studies have shown that mixed-breed dogs have a greater life expectancy than pure breeds. Your Doodle might surpass either of its parents in age. Smaller Poodles tend to live longer and Poodle mixes from a small Poodle may do likewise. So again, talk to your breeder, and see what the lineage of your puppy is. How healthy are her parents; how old were her grandparents? You can have at least a good idea of what you might expect from that information. A trip to your vet can confirm her health and of course, get her any needed shots. Ideally, your Labradoodle will have a lifespan of 12 years or more! Providing your dog a safe and nurturing home can only help her. Proper nutrition, care, socialization, and exercise will all help your Doodle live a long, happy life. Hungry for more? On top of that, there are still some basic rules you can follow. And we will walk you through things you will need to consider in this article. Every pet is unique and the goal is to find the best diet for the individual pet. Is real food good for German Shepherd puppies? Real food contains whole ingredients that are cooked to aid in digestion. Whole real foods are a great option for adult GSDs, it might be best to keep the puppy food dry or wet. The American College of Veterinary Nutrition does not recommend feeding dogs less than one year old a homemade diet as they can be lacking in calcium and phosphorous, which can have serious implications down the line for GSDs. Best homemade food for German Shepherd puppies If you insist on feeding your GSD puppy a homemade diet, the best way to go about it is to get recipes specifically formulated for them by a veterinary nutritionist. This is very important to prevent issues like hip dysplasia and other joint and bone issues as an adult GSD. A typical homemade food recipe: Chicken. The main downside is that while Royal Canin is the most expensive kibble on our list, it also contains several grains and byproduct ingredients. We were hoping that the price meant higher quality ingredients, but Royal Canin seems to have abandoned whole foods for vitamin and mineral additives. Pros Designed specifically for German Shepherd puppies Smaller-sized kibbles for puppy teeth Protein blend to support digestion Balanced minerals for healthy bone growth Vitamin and antioxidant blend to support young immune systems Cons Some grains and byproduct ingredients 5. Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy Food Check Price on Amazon Blue Buffalo is a well-respected brand of dog food, and their reputation for quality is due in large part to their commitment to whole food ingredients. We love how much of the vitamins and minerals provided by this kibble come from whole foods like chicken, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Blue Buffalo does not go the quick and easy route of adding these nutrients later in the process, unlike other brands, and the finished product speaks for itself. However, German Shepherd puppies have notoriously finicky digestive systems. While being grain-free is helpful in that respect, this blend does not contain any other special formulations to support a healthy GI tract. It is extremely healthy, but also on the expensive side — so you may gamble and lose if your puppy has trouble digesting this kibble. Pros Designed for large breed puppies The first ingredient is deboned chicken Grain-free, no byproduct ingredients Vitamins and minerals are mainly provided by whole foods and complete proteins Support for bone growth, immune system, joints, and cognitive functioning Cons No modification to support a sensitive digestion 6. This chicken and brown rice puppy blend contains no byproduct ingredients, multiple lean animal proteins, and only the highest quality grains. However, this food is moderately expensive and does not specifically cater to dogs with sensitive digestive systems. Better to try a grain-free brand first and keep this option as a backup. The ingredients are all high quality, but the variety of foods in this blend leaves something to be desired. Considering that it is made almost entirely from protein, grains, and beans this brand is rather expensive. There are no whole vegetables or fruits, so many of the vitamins and minerals are provided by additives. Added vitamins are not only harder to absorb than those from whole foods, but cheaper. What gives? Most importantly, the beans may be hard for a German Shepherd puppy to digest and lead to a variety of gastrointestinal upset. While the lamb could be a nice change for your pup, we recommend testing this kibble out in small amounts to gauge suitability for your dog. Pros Designed for large breed puppies The first ingredient is deboned lamb, second is chicken meal Only high-quality, whole grains Whole foods supply joint support Cons Few whole fruits and vegetables Contains beans and peas which may upset digestion 8. But upon closer consideration, you will see why this food is not a great choice for German Shepherd puppies. Though it has good proteins, this is another brand that gets almost none of its nutrients from whole fruits or vegetables. Pros Designed for large breed puppies First ingredient is chicken meal No artificial colors or preservatives Balanced minerals to support bone growth Cons The second, third, and fourth ingredients are all grain Very few whole fruits and vegetables 9. Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food Check Price on Amazon The Eukanuba Large Breed puppy food is another excellent example of a food that, while technically complete and balanced, does not have the healthful ingredients to make all those nutrients available to your dog. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Officially, there is only a single type of Boxer dog recognized by major kennel clubs. However, fanciers and breeders have set the distinctions between Boxer dogs bred in different countries. The differences between the types of Boxer dogs in each region are heavily dependent on preferences. Breeders from each location have been cultivating specific characteristics or traits that they want the breed to exhibit. International kennel organizations also contributed to their variation as they prioritize the characteristics of a certain region over the other. Among the three types of Boxers, this is the second variant that has been merited as a standard in by The Kennel Club KC , one of the oldest canine organizations in the world. This substantiates why the UK standard leans more to the characteristic of this Boxer type. One of the defining characteristics of UK Boxers is their small feet, high knuckles, and slender legs which give them a more elegant look. It is considered to be the smallest and slimmest among the three. Nonetheless, the masculine physique which is the core trait of Boxers is still evident. Its slender body also provides more room for agility and precision in moving. It is also expected for UK Boxers to be biddable, calm, fearless, and self-assured. Oddly enough, the standard for this type of Boxer was only established after the two other Boxer types were standardized. Among the three, the German Boxer remains to be the more robust and largest type in terms of muscle mass and bone structure. Their physique has a more defined masculine figure with longer and stronger legs. These traditional Boxer features are probably retained through time since most German Boxers are still bred for their natural talents in herding and hunting. Another key characteristic of German Boxers is that they have a shorter snout compared to American Boxers but wider than the UK Boxers. According to most Boxer breeders, German Boxers are calmer and easier to train compared to the other types of Boxers. The traits and characteristics of the American Boxer were officially acknowledged in by the American Kennel Club. The most defining trait of this Boxer type lies in its coat. An American Boxer has a smooth, tight, and shiny coat that has no wrinkles. With this unique trait, it would be easy to distinguish an American Boxer among other variants. Boxer fanciers claim that American Boxers have a more elegant and balanced look. The reason could be because most American Boxers are bred to be show dogs or champions of conformation events. When it comes to temperament and behavior, the American Boxers are said to be playful yet constrained, patient, and stoic towards family members — especially with children. Also, they are said to be the most energetic Boxer among all types. If you have been searching about Boxers, you might have also heard about black Boxers although there are none in reality. Let me explain to you in this section the different coat colors and markings that Boxer dogs have. Fawn Boxer Dog Fawn coat color can exhibit a range of hues, including shades of yellow, tan, red, and mahogany. It is one of the two standard coat colors recognized by kennel clubs and possibly the most iconic. Too much white on the coat is considered a fault. The common markings for fawn Boxers are white flash and a black mask. The black mask refers to a black muzzle that can also be seen on German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois. Brindle Boxer Dog Brindle is not a color but a pattern. This is characterized by the presence of streaks of irregular and darker color against the light color background of the coat. For Boxers, the background is usually a color ranging from fawn to deep red. The appearance of the brindle coat will vary depending on the thickness and thinness of the color strips. Some may look like almost solid fawns while some may have more defined patterns in their body. Depending on the shade of the brindle, a Boxer dog may be called a light brindle, golden brindle, fawn brindle, red brindle, or mahogany brindle. The concentration of brindle patterns in Boxers can also be classified into three: tiger brindle, reverse brindle, and seal brindle. The streaks of irregular darker hair patterns are spread across a light background. On the other hand, reverse brindle dogs have strips of irregular lighter color against a darker color background. They differ from a seal brindle Boxer who sports a heavy concentration of dark streaks on their coat. However, for the record, there is no such thing as black Boxer dogs in reality. Purebred Boxer dogs do not carry the black color gene so it is impossible for them to have a black base. Boxers can only either be fawn to mahogany , brindle, or white. The black Boxer dogs that are advertised are brindle in nature. Remember the seal brindle that I mentioned earlier? When the streaks of the darker color patterns are too tight that they seal or shut the light background off, the coat appears to be solid black. In other words, the black coloration is nothing but an illusion. Worst, due to the hoaxes about white Boxers, they were even culled back then. Contrary to popular belief, white Boxers are not albino. Albinism occurs when a dog lacks pigmentation on its body. However, that is not the case for white Boxers. Similar to seal, the white coat for Boxers is produced due to an unusual patterning in the body. In short, they just have large white patches. White Boxers are either fawn or brindle with a large area covered with white markings. Boxers with this coat color typically do not have other markings in their body including a black mask. Those with patches of other colors in their body patches on the eyes, black mask, ears, back are called Check Boxers and are considered to be particolored. Boxers that have more than a third of white color in their coat or are all white are disqualified on conformation shows. The good news is that the AKC now recognizes the white coat color but is still considered to be non-standard. White Boxers are allowed to have limited AKC registration but are prohibited from being used on breeding. Knowing the type of Boxer you have would be easy if you bought from a reputable breeder. However, if circumstances do not allow the aforementioned ways, you can also try observing the unique characteristics of each type of Boxer. As discussed earlier, English or UK Boxers have long, slender legs which give them an elegant look. One of their defining characteristics is their high knuckles and small feet. If your dog sports this appearance, it is probably a UK Boxer. If your dog is large compared to other Boxers you see, there is a high tendency that it is a German Boxer. This type of Boxer is the biggest among the three. It has a dense bone and a larger and more masculine frame compared to the UK and American Boxer. Spotting if your Boxer is an American type would be easy. The defining trait of an American Boxer is its slick, smooth, shiny, tight coat. In terms of temperament, it would be hard to distinguish the three types of Boxers as they exhibit similar behaviors: confidence, patient, calm, and watchful. However, the German Boxer is said to be the calmest Boxer among the three. The American Boxer on the other hand is the most energetic type. If your Boxer sports extraordinary demeanor and composure unlike other Boxers, there is a great possibility that it is a German Boxer. Subsequently, if it acts like a bomb of energy, it is probably an American Boxer. Although all of the types of Boxers can join dog shows, some are more favored by specific kennel clubs. Conformation shows usually set guidelines following the standards provided by these organizations. Thus, Boxers that perfectly adhere to the standards are more favored than the others. If you want to join Boxer shows, the first thing you need to do is to identify the type of Boxer you own as well as the kennel club that sponsors the event. The prices of the three different types of Boxers have no significant differences. Boxer dogs with champion blood are more expensive than ordinary purebred Boxers. When it comes to coat color, the most expensive Boxer puppy would be the one with a seal brindle. As discussed earlier, a Boxer with this coat creates an illusion of a solid black color. Due to their rarity, Boxer dogs with seal brindle color are highly valued and priced. Places to Find Different Types of Boxer Dogs for Sale and Adoption In buying a Boxer dog, you should only transact with reputable breeders and avoid buying from backyard breeders and puppy mills. A professional Boxer breeder only aims to enhance and further the characteristics of the breed. Here are the places where you can find reputable and professional Boxer breeders. This online marketplace is regulated by the AKC itself so you have the assurance that all of the Boxer puppies sold are bred ethically and professionally. Most of the advertised Boxers in this marketplace came from the bloodlines of American Boxers. They have a acre facility dedicated to breeding German and UK Boxer dogs. This breeder is interested in breeding German Boxers that is why all of the dogs in their facility have German pedigrees. Unfortunately, a great number of Boxer dogs also end up in rescue centers. If you are eyeing to adopt one, here are the places where you can apply: American Boxer Club Rescue Directory — The parent organization of Boxer clubs in America has a complete list of the numerous Boxer rescue organizations across the country. There are dedicated shelters for each state and region of the US. Adopt-a-Pet — This is an online pet database that is dedicated to rehoming Boxer dogs. There are hundreds of Boxers posted on their sites every day that are available for adoption. It is affiliated with over 12, pet shelters across the US and Canada. All types of Boxer dogs English, German, and American are pretty common. In fact, kennel clubs do not consider these types as exactly legit. The terms American, UK, and German Boxer dogs are mostly used by breeders residing in a certain location. The boat only tips in terms of coat color. Contrary to popular belief that white is the rarest color for Boxers, seal brindle Boxers are the real gems. The tight patterns of a dark streak of hairs give an illusion of solid black coat color. Due to their rarity, they are also considered to be more expensive compared to other colors. What Is a European Boxer Dog? A European Boxer dog is another term used to refer to German Boxers. They are more masculine and have larger body frames. To be fair, all Boxer dogs are equally good. However, there are unique traits evident to each type of Boxer dog. The physique of a German Boxer dog is more robust than the other types, giving it an impression of a more reliable guardian. On the other hand, the unique features of American Boxer shiny tight coat and UK Boxer high knuckles and slender feet give them a more elegant look. If you are after a sport or a working dog, German Boxers would be preferable. On the other hand, if you would like to join conformation events, the American or UK Boxer will be your go-to. In addition, you should also consider your region as judges favor a certain type of Boxer depending on their origin. For the behavior and temperament, all three are lively yet calm, easily trained, and self-composed. However, breeders and owners testify that American Boxers are more energetic compared to the other types of Boxers. Your preference and lifestyle will be your criteria in choosing which Boxer matches you. Aside from their slight differences in size and appearance, they are all Boxer dogs that exhibit elegance and vigor. Their temperament and behavior will heavily depend on the environment they are raised in and the training they received. In terms of Boxer types according to coat colors, you should carefully weigh your options and refer to what the standard says. If you aspire to enter show events, you should not choose a Boxer puppy that is white or has white patches that cover more than a third of its body as such traits are considered faults. You should take note that a Boxer is not a dog for beginners. It is a breed that requires proper training and attention. My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. They're most known for: Friendly Easy going Health Issues Because these dogs have only been bred for a few years, there has been no study on whether there are any specific health issues being produced from these crosses. In order to get a better idea of which health problems a puppy might face, you must research the parent breeds involved, and take a look at health issues that are common to them. The average reported lifespan of these dogs is between 12 to 15 years. Boxers can be prone to cardiomyopathy , bloat, hip dysplasia , and hypothyroidism , among other possible health threats. Pugs can be prone to obesity, breathing problems , eye problems, and skin problems. Boston Terriers are prone to eye problems , heart problems, epilepsy, and skin problems. The breeding procedures used to create this mix are extremely controversial. Many " miniature " dogs have been heavily inbred, so it's not uncommon for them to develop genetic disorders or become ill at a young age, even from a reputable breeder. The miniature Boxer is also a high-energy breed that requires a hands-on owner. They aren't meant for owners with sedentary lifestyles or those who reside in apartments. Because the miniature Boxer sheds, it may not be suitable for those looking for a hypoallergenic dog breed. If you understand the cons, there are many pros to this breed. Since they are smaller than Boxers, they are less expensive to feed and easier to care for. They require slightly less exercise than the original breed and can do well in smaller spaces, even if they aren't ideal apartment dogs. This mix is family-friendly, intelligent, eager to please, and easy to train. Also, they're relatively affordable to purchase as puppies. Finding Miniature Boxer Puppies for Sale When looking for a breeder of miniature Boxers, make sure you do your due diligence. Before you decide to do business, take the time to investigate the breeder fully to make sure you'll receive exactly what you're paying for. There are many unscrupulous breeders producing designer dogs, and you want to make sure the breeder can provide a health guarantee. The breeder should demonstrate that they are breeding to create dogs with excellent health and temperament. Because these dogs are not recognized by the top registry organizations and are not bred in large numbers, you may have to search for them online as well as locally through sites such as Craigslist to see if you can locate a breeder. Cost of a Miniature Boxer Puppy Because these dogs are not popular yet, they can be relatively expensive. Dog Clubs The miniature Boxer is not a recognized breed, but it may become one as some point in the future. If you'd like to register your pet with a dog club, both the American Canine Hybrid Club and the Certified Pet Registry take registrations for various crosses that produce this type of dog. Spend Time With These Dogs Before you bring one of these pups home, spend some time at several breeders' kennels so you can get to know the dogs in person. This is the surest way to find out if a Miniature Boxer will fit your lifestyle, as well as which particular cross you prefer. Getting a puppy is a commitment for the life of the dog, so be sure about your choice. Yes, I do believe they like one another. It only took a few days for Allie to accept Bruno into her pack. How do I know she has accepted him? Because Allie started pushing her food around , elling Bruno not to eat—a sure sign that she accepts the little puppy into her pack. He is deaf so we have to watch him if we let him out of the fence, because it wouldn't do any good to holler for him, since he cannot hear us. He also has blue eyes , which I think is very rare, because most Boxers that I see only have one blue eye , and he has 2 blue eyes. He likes to sleep, play, eat , he likes to be in the house because his hair is thin and short. He also likes to play with my Australian Shepherd Dixie. He always has to sleep in the bed with me. He has to either be leaning on you, sitting on your foot , or lying on you when you are in the bed. He absolutely HATES getting a bath , but he likes it when he gets out and you put the towel over his whole body and start rubbing him all over. His bad habits are: chewing up my little sisters toys , barking when he can't see or find you. He gets a lot of exercise during the day, because we have an acre fenced in where they can run as much as they like. He's the biggest clown I know and snores like you wouldn't believe, but we love him dearly. Shaggy the Boxer in his crate with a cone on his head after being neutered. My name is Bear, by the way. Now go on.Notice the ears are not cropped and the tail is not docked. It is illegal to do so in a lot of European countries. This genetic disorder that has traveled over the years. Blue eyed boxer puppies can be found having brown eye patches which is a desirable trait and makes the boxer dog appear to be friendlier. One fact about faun boxer with blue eyes and white boxer with blue eyes is that, these dogs can inherit blue eyes even if their parents have black or dark brown eyes. This recessive gene is known to be found in every boxer puppy and has different reasons to show up. As a puppy grows up, it is born with a differing blue eye color. Over the few weeks they tend to mature and the color is gradually changed. Boxer dogs which have larger white and lighter patches on the body are known to have blue eyes. One of the types is the Brindle boxer with blue eyes. This breed has a shiny short hair fur coat, with patches around the eye. The personality trait of these is super happy, and fun loving pets. These are found in a standard way on the muzzle, near the tummy and back. This faun shade varies from light to gold and dark. The blue eyes are a natural gene, whereas the white shades are found on the paws, ankles, chest, and muzzle. The white patch is called a check pattern. With a wide variety of boxer breed types, you get to explore the different shades of this breed. The white boxer is a healthy and that of a brindle or faun boxer. It is a complete myth to think that the white boxer dogs are an Albino production. They are as normal as any boxer breed and usually are born with blue colored eyes. Breeds The link has been copied! However, the Border Collie Golden Retriever mix has a lot to offer as a pet. It can always be a little interesting to see what you get when mixing two dog breeds. Border Collies are mostly black and white, though there can be other colors. Goldens vary in color from light yellow to deep gold or red. The cross, sometimes called the Coltriever can be any color ranging from black and white to yellow, golden, brown, deep chocolate, or red. The best way to understand a designer dog breed a mix of two purebreds is to take a closer look at its parent breeds. As you might expect, they were used extensively for herding sheep over generations in this area. Eventually, they developed into excellent working dogs known for their intelligence, energy, and obedience. In fact, Border Collies have topped the list when it comes to ranking the smartest dog breeds. Border Collies are medium to large size dogs standing inches at the shoulder and weighing about pounds. They were made to work and require a job or at least lots of exercise and mental stimulation to be calm and happy. The Loving Golden Retriever The Golden Retriever has long been popular as a family dog in addition to being used for various jobs. Their affectionate personalities and loving attitude toward everyone they encounter are downright endearing. Interestingly, Golden Retrievers were originally developed for work. They are also from Scotland and are the result of the work of Lord Dudley Marjorbanks. He worked to produce an intelligent, hard-working dog from the extinct Tweed Water Spaniel and the Yellow Retriever. Golden Retrievers are pretty big, usually standing between inches tall and weighing up to 75 pounds. They are typically golden in color, but the shade can range from quite pale to a deep gold or red hue. However, the Golden Collie tends to be a larger dog, standing between inches and weighing pounds. Surprisingly for such a large dog, Coltrievers can handle living in small homes or even apartments — with proper exercise, of course. As descendants of the highly energetic Border Collie, these guys will go nuts if they are cooped up for too long! Goldens are famous for their easy-going, loving personalities. They are loyal, develop strong bonds with their families, and make wonderful playmates for children. As with any dog, it is important to meet their needs for mental stimulation and physical exercise. Because of their smarts, they may need more mental stimulation than other breeds but there are a lot of activities that count. Playing with the kids, puzzle games , fetch, swimming, jogging, hiking , and so much more make these pups super happy! The last section gives you a big hint — yes, Golden Border Retrievers make excellent family dogs. Because they need so much attention, it can be hard for a single person or even a couple who work outside the home to provide enough interaction for the dog. But you put a whole family in the house and that Golden Border Retriever is in heaven! They will happily play with your kids and will be gentle and loving. They will always let you know when a stranger is coming to visit! Everybody wants a well-behaved dog and it takes time and patience to achieve that. However, some dogs are easier to train than others. For busy families that may not have tons of time to dedicate to dog training, easy trainability is a big plus. Well, the Golden Border Retriever is a great choice. They can get themselves into trouble if they are bored, so plenty of mental stimulation and exercise is a must — or your furniture could pay the price. If you like the idea of a dog that can learn lots of cool and unusual tricks, this is a great dog to pick. They are also great dogs for competing in agility and other canine sports. Outside the home, Golden Border Retrievers are fantastic for use in a variety of jobs. Their smarts and obedience make them easy to use for herding, retrieving, and everything in between. But one thing is certain, they have a lot of hair and will shed frequently. Because these dogs are certainly not it. To keep their coats somewhat under control, expect to brush their hair at least once a week. Baths only need to happen about once or twice a month. Be careful not to bathe too frequently or their skin can dry out. And make sure to keep those floppy ears clean and dry to help avoid ear infections. Just as with humans, it depends on their age, size, activity level, and other factors. Adjust accordingly if you notice they are getting thinner or putting on more weight. For exercise, remember these guys are quite the energetic pups! It is best to provide your pup with at least 90 minutes of vigorous exercise daily. Though if your schedule allows, these pups will happily go strong for minutes a day and still race you to the front door! Health Concerns for the Golden Retriever and Border Collie Unfortunately, all dogs can get sick, regardless of their breed. That may be somewhat true for the breed as a whole, but individual dogs could also be susceptible to the health problems of both their parent breeds. For Coltrievers, this means they can be plagued by the health problems of both the Border Collie and the Golden Retriever. Both dog breeds are susceptible to bloat and allergies. Elbow and hip dysplasia are also common and may be passed on to their designer dog offspring. Border Collies can pass on progressive retinal atrophy and collie eye anomaly. Both of these conditions can cause loss of eyesight if not treated. Deafness and epilepsy are also common issues. Golden Retrievers contribute heart problems, other eye conditions like pigmentary uveitis, and, unfortunately, cancer. All in all, Golden Border Retrievers are generally healthy dogs and can be expected to live a long life with proper care. The average life expectancy of the crossbreed is around years. Breeders love the idea of mixing their intelligence and obedience with the looks or other characteristics of different dog breeds. Thus, there are quite a few options for Border Collie crossbreeds to choose from. The Border Aussie is very similar to the Border Collie in smarts and personality. Plus, this dog is smarter than the average toddler, so watch out and get ready to teach him lots of tricks! The Border Collie Chihuahua mix is a designer dog breed that has become quite famous in the last few years. That's because these dogs are smart, playful, and active. They also make great pets for people who live in small apartments or homes. The Border Collie German Shepherd mix , also known as the Shollie, is a unique and intelligent breed that combines the workaholic nature of the Border Collie with the protective instincts of the German Shepherd. These dogs are known for their loyalty, intelligence, and versatility, and they excel in a wide range of activities, from herding to search and rescue. A Bordoodle is a great option. With the right mix, the Poodle contributes a slightly curly, low-shed coat. The Golden Border Collie makes a fabulous companion for the right family. They can be content in an apartment or small home, but only if you have the time and energy to exercise them daily. They need to run at the local dog park, go on a hike, explore new areas, or participate in agility or other canine sports to get enough exercise. For this reason, they can be a better option if you have a house with a sizeable yard or live on a farm. If you have kids, these are great dogs to consider. They make loving and playful companions and your dog and the kids will help tire each other out. They may try to herd people around, which can be intimating for small children, but gentle correction usually takes care of that quite easily. These guys crave attention and love companionship so they will get lonely and anxious on their own for more than 6 hours every day. They are friendly and loving, even with strangers, so you can have guests over without worrying about your dog being suspicious or aloof. All in all, the Golden Border Retriever is a wonderful companion dog for active families. Find more helpful articles on pet-parenting at the Off Leash blog at TryFi. The basic grooming processes needed are: Brushing their furs weekly with a solid bristle brush to prevent them from shedding their coats too much; Cleaning their ears weekly to prevent ear infections; Bathing of one to two times a month; and Having their nails trimmed once they get too long. For first time owners who do not have experience with grooming dogs, this can be difficult because this breed requires high-maintenance grooming. You should see a veterinarian first to ask the grooming practices necessary for your dog. You need to follow the practices always. Excessive shedding is possible, so bath should be given at most twice a month. Their skins can also dry out if bathing is done irregularly. When bathing your dog, use a shampoo specialized for their furs to keep the quality. This mix is also prone to ear infections. Prevention is better than cure, so every week cleaning of the ear should be done. Their ears are one of the essential parts of their body. They cannot carry out their daily activities if their ears are in bad condition. Also, you must also trim their nails if they got too long to avoid future injuries from scratches. There are times that they even scratch their skins, so you must always monitor their nails. Golden Border Retriever Health Problems If the parents of the mixes have disorders, the chances are high that the offspring can inherit the disorder. However, there are cases in which the puppies are healthy even if one of the parents is diagnosed with a disease. It is better to check the pedigree of the crossbreed to verify if it is free from a severe illness. In biology, there is an incident known as hybrid vigor; it means that the offspring is better than its parents in several aspects such as physical characteristics and health. When you adopt a Golden Retriever Border Collie crossbreed, these are the following disorders that can attack your puppy: Skin Allergies Heart Diseases Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Because this breed shed too much, they are vulnerable to skin allergies. Once grooming is not taken care of, allergies can follow. Aside from the allergies that the shedding will bring you, your dog can also be affected by excessive removals of coats. Even though they are medium-sized dogs, bloating is also common to them. When the food matrix is not followed correctly, obesity can happen; it is a prerequisite to severe disorders. The excess weight of your dog can result in heart problems. As mentioned, this breed is highly intelligent, one of the mental diseases that this breed can develop is the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD which can be similar to humans. It will be a nuisance not just for your dog, but to you also. If they have their check-ups regularly, most of these mixes live up to 15 years. Make sure to prioritize their health. Border Collie Mixed with Golden Retriever Food Requirements Researches have proven that the amount of food intake in an individual dog is varying. The nutritional requirement of each dog is dependent on factors like weight, height, and the activities done by your dog. In the case of Border Collie mixed with Golden Retriever puppies, there is also no suggested food servings. For this breed, table foods or the foods consumed by humans cannot be fed to them. They are sensitive regarding the food they are eating. The dog food that you must give to the puppies should contain the necessary amount of vitamins and minerals for their growth. Puppies can be fed thrice in a day. As they grow, their needs for food is decreasing. To prevent obesity in dogs, a meal given twice in a day is recommended. Make a schedule on when to feed them so that they will be used to it; make sure to follow it regularly. In feeding your dogs, make sure to check the suggested amount of servings in the pack of the dog food that you bought. Monitoring the feeding habit of your dogs is essential. Their optimum performance will be achieved if they are given the right amount of food. There are also diets designed for highly skilled dogs. You should consult a veterinarian if you are planning a diet for your dog. Make sure to match their food matrix with their activities. If you want to give your pooch a happy and healthy life, start with nutrition. Avoid food that could be harmful to their health, such as the worst dry dog food. In case you brought a puppy to your home and the little munchkin is just getting used to regular food, take a look at the list of the best puppy food brands. Older dogs should also eat healthy food which is suggested in the best senior dry dog list. Your puppies come from two different parents, which makes them more likely to grow to love dry dog food for small dogs or best large breed dry dog food. They require long hours of exercise. An average of 90 minutes a day is recommended. The hours needed for their exercise is comparably longer to the number of minutes required by some breeds. The reason for this is their highly active lifestyle. Without exercise, the level of their energy can be difficult to match. Even if you are not supervising them, they can exercise on their own. Allocate a place in your home where they can play around. They will eventually stop exercising once they get tired because these dogs know their limits. If you have a backyard at your home, it is the perfect spot for your dog to exercise. Let it run around your yard. With that simple activity, risks of developing serious heart conditions can be reduced. Besides, extra calories can also be burned; therefore, they can be less prone to obesity. As discussed, Golden Collie can make a great exercise companion. You can have them join you in your exercise routines such as: Jogging. Lifespan Sociability Given how well-known its parent breeds are, you may think that you already understand everything about Golden Border Retrievers—and you might be right. If you value your lawn or garden, this dog may not be right for you. They love everyone and everything, although they may be a bit shy around strangers. Are These Dogs Good for Families? In fact, you may need to enlist the entire family in tuckering these dogs out, as meeting their exercise requirements may be overwhelming for a single person. Having multiple family members who can take turns throwing a ball or a stick definitely comes in handy. Golden Border Retrievers are generally welcoming to strangers, although socialization helps in this regard. Also, they have strong herding instincts, so while they may not chase or attack your cat or other small pet, they may try to push it around a little bit. Here are a few things you should know about the breed before you bring one home. That usually means kibble with plenty of protein in it, preferably from a variety of lean meats. Protein burns more slowly than carbs do, so your pup will have plenty of energy to stay active all day long. The primary ingredients to watch out for in a kibble are cheap fillers like corn, wheat, and soy. These are packed with empty calories and can cause digestive issues in some dogs. Instead, look for high-quality fruits and veggies. These dogs fail to see the appeal of an afternoon spent in front of the television. They need exercise—a great deal of it. These brainy pups love to be challenged, so obedience training, agility work, and puzzles are all likely to go over well with one of these pooches. Their big brains can quickly figure out what you want them to do, and they love to make you happy. As noted above, these dogs have destructive tendencies that need to be curbed, and they need proper socialization if you expect them to have good manners in public. You can teach these dogs to do just about anything. They respond well to positive reinforcement while punishing them is likely to backfire. Praise and affection are generally all you need to use as rewards, so be careful about handing out treats. You can quickly overload these dogs with cookies if you give them one every time they do something right. Their other grooming needs are fairly typical. They need their teeth brushed several times a week, their nails trimmed as needed, and their body bathed a couple of times a year. Be careful not to bathe them too often, though, as that can strip their coats of essential oils and dry out their skin. Below are a few of the issues that may come up if you bring one of these dogs home. Minor Conditions. Bloat Ear infections The best way to avoid these issues from arising is to get your golden collie mix from a reputable breeder. Gollies are considered to be generally healthy and have an average life expectancy of 10 to 15 years. Feeding A Collie Golden Retriever Mix Diet plays a huge role in the life of every dog and is very important for the overall well-being and health of your mix. An adult Golden Collie mix should eat dog food designed for large breed dogs with high energy and have two evenly-spaced meals a day. Since this mix can easily become bloated, you should stick with a consistent feeding schedule and avoid free-feeding your dog. When it comes to puppies, opt for a high-quality puppy food for large breed dogs and feed your mix four times a day until they reach adulthood. Once you bring your new puppy home, continue feeding the same brand of dog food the breeder was using and wait at least a month to transition your pooch to a different formula. They are moderate to heavy shedders, so be prepared to be engulfed in dog hair, particularly during the shedding season. To stay on top of all of that loose hair and remove dirt and dander, you will have to brush your Gollie mix three times a week. During the shedding season, you should brush your dog daily or every other day, depending on how much loose hair he or she is leaving all over your house. When it comes to bathing, you should bathe your Gollie only when necessary, or roughly every couple of months. If you notice anything unusual like redness or swelling, take your dog to the vet as soon as you can to avoid the occurrence of painful ear infections. After learning more about this delightful crossbreed, you might still be wondering whether a golden collie is the right dog for you. Ask yourself the following questions to help decide. Where Do You Live? Golden border retrievers are relatively large dogs, and they also have lots of energy. To be at their happiest and healthiest, these dogs need enough space to gallop around and play on a regular basis. They will do best if they have a bit of outside space to call their own. Also, are there dog parks near you where your dog can get their daily exercise? Living within walking distance of an off-leash dog park is ideal when you have a Gollie. These dogs not only make great companions, but they also need a lot of companionship. If they are left alone for extended periods of time, they are likely to develop depression and anxiety. Not only is this bad for them, but it can also be bad for you, as their restlessness tends to manifest as destructive behavior. If you are going to need to leave your pup home alone for more than six hours at a time on a regular basis, you might need to consider a different breed. One of the things that stands out most about collie golden dogs is how much energy they have. In order to manage their excess energy, they need anywhere from 90 to minutes of exercise per day! They will need to be able to run off-leash and play fetch. Is this consistent with your lifestyle? Do you and your family have the time and energy to give this dog the exercise that they need? Are you up for weekend hiking adventures and swims? Are You Experienced With Dogs? With that said, however, these playful pups also need a firm hand to guide them. How Old Is Your Family? If you have kids in the house as well, you might want to consider the age of your kids. Not only do these dogs tend to have the urge to herd younger children, but their energy and playfulness can be overwhelming for younger family members. Plus, you might not want to be running around caring after both a toddler and a hyperactive collie Golden. They fit in much better with older children who can share in the responsibility of looking after them. Exactly how much you can expect to pay for a collie Golden pup always depends on the supply and demand in your area. How big do Gollies get? Golden border retrievers can grow to be quite large, typically measuring up to 26 inches tall and weighing up to 75 pounds, but they can also be significantly smaller. To get an idea of how big a pup is likely to be as an adult, look at their parents. Remember that the female is always the largest of the two to prevent complications at birth. You can expect female pups to be roughly the same size as the smaller of their parents, while males usually take after the larger parent. However, there are always surprises with mixed-breed dogs. The Verdict On Gollies When you mix a border collie and a golden retriever, you get a friendly and intelligent Gollie that is incredibly eager to please. Golden collies are extremely high energy dogs. They need lots of exercise, lots of mental stimulation, and lots of love. It is a serious long-term commitment to adopt one of these dogs into your life. If you spend extended hours in the office and prefer to spend the weekend on the couch, you might find that you are not a good match for them. Still, while these dogs are certainly a lot of work, they are more than worth the effort. There are few dogs that are more loving and affectionate. The bond that you will form will be transformational, and you might wonder how you managed before they came into your life. Three to four times a day 4 — 5 months 6 months and above Two times a day Pregnant or breastfeeding French Bulldogs may eat up to three times a day within eight hours. Meanwhile, puppies require more frequent feedings than adult dogs due to their rapid metabolism. In general, a French Bulldog puppy should be fed three times daily between two and six months. Once the French Bulldog puppy reaches the age of six months, the feeding frequency can be reduced to two meals each day. As developing puppies, your Frenchie requires a consistent daily feeding plan. The feeding plan should incorporate at least three measured meals per day. Its dinner schedule is vital, as it allows ample time to digest the food and go pee or potty before bedtime. Between 14 and 18 weeks, you can begin accustoming your French Bulldog puppy to two meals each day. If your veterinarian advises you to keep your French Bulldog on a three-meals-a-day diet, this must be properly followed. Senior dogs can be fed on the same schedule when given three meals a day. Since elderly dogs do not move as much, they may develop too much weight. Consequently, you should ensure that the food contains fewer calories, more fiber, and an appropriate balance of fat and protein. Your veterinarian should have a recommended amount of treats you should give your dog. Again, it will vary according to its weight and level of activity. If you must frequently use treats for training, use tiny bits or give them a licking mat. Best Dog Foods for French Bulldog A feeding guide for Frenchie dog lovers would be incomplete without the information on the best dog food for their furry companion. There are numerous food options available for French Bulldogs. The best pet food varies from one Frenchie to another. Perhaps your French Bulldog is a fussy eater or suffers from food allergies. It is feasible to provide a balanced diet for your French Bulldogs if you use the best store-bought or homemade dog food that contains all the nutrition needed by your dog and as prescribed by your veterinarian. The list below shows the best dog food options you can provide your French Bulldog: Dry Food: Dry dog food is commercially available kibble. This can be an excellent alternative for French Bulldogs with sensitive stomachs. French Bulldog puppies require high-quality dry food that is high in animal protein to aid in growth and muscular development. Wet Food: Wet food is contained in a can; it is primarily composed of water and is considered highly mushy food. However, wet food expires more quickly than dry food, making it the least practical alternative. Home-Cooked Diet: A home-cooked, protein-rich diet like a chicken meal is excellent for French Bulldogs. Unlike ordinary kibble, it contains no additives or preservatives. It supports healthy digestion and may help avoid various problems related to a bad diet, including obesity, dry skin and coat, pancreatitis, diabetes, and a low immune system. French Bulldogs are prone to developing a variety of joint and back issues. Along with other joint problems, they may develop luxating patella or hip dysplasia. Both glucosamine and chondroitin are critical components of a high-quality French Bulldog dog diet. These essential vitamins assist your French in developing the connective tissue necessary for healthy joints and spine support. Omega-3 fatty acids can assist your Frenchie to keep muscle mass and strength by reducing inflammation and soreness. Also, this can promote healthy skin by preventing itchy and flaky skin. Whether wet and dry food, raw food, or a homemade diet, each dog food offers several benefits and drawbacks. Consult a veterinarian before deciding to know exactly what food option suits your Frenchie. Any French Bulldog owner will attest that vomiting is far more common in this breed than in other dogs. While it cannot be totally prevented, you should know what human foods are toxic to French Bulldogs. Some of the foods to avoid are not only bad for Frenchie; many of them can be fatal. They may result in poisoning and, in the worst-case scenario, death. This section enumerates some of the most dangerous foods for French Bulldogs. I will discuss why these foods are poisonous and when you should contact a veterinarian. The first and most prevalent is chocolate. It contains a toxin called theobromine , which can cause a variety of health problems when consumed in large amounts. This can cause irregular heartbeats, seizures, and sudden death. Garlic and onions should also never be included in the diet of your Frenchie puppy or adult dog. Even a trace of these vegetables can result in anemia and red blood cell failure in your pup. Poisoning symptoms include lethargy, fatigue, vomiting, rapid breathing, and an increased heart rate. However, remember that you may not immediately notice poisoning symptoms because the toxic consequences may take a few days to manifest. Additionally, grapes are one of the most toxic foods for your Frenchie. A dog that has consumed grapes may exhibit stomach bloating and diarrhea. They need to be taken to a veterinarian immediately. In severe cases, gastric lavage is the best course of action. Candy, artificial sweeteners, corn on the cob, roasted bones, avocado, raisins, almonds, cherry, peach, plum, coconut oil, mustard seeds, alcohol, coffee, blue cheese, and tomatoes are also regarded to be unsafe for French Bulldogs. Furthermore, there are certain foods that you should avoid giving your Pitbull owing to the negative side effects they may cause. While they are not considered dangerous, they can cause nausea, diarrhea, and weight gain. Numerous dogs wind up at veterinarian clinics due to improper food intake. While prevention is always the best course of action, it is critical to understand emergency care and medication expenses. Read our article on French Bulldog costs to learn more about the medical expenditures associated with a French Bulldog. These adjustments should ideally take place over 5 to 7 days. Consult a veterinarian in this scenario, especially if you intend to switch to a raw or homemade diet. Feeding an Overweight French Bulldog French Bulldogs can quickly gain weight, resulting in various health problems. Thus, dog owners need to notice when their Frenchie gets overweight to assist the dog in maintaining a healthy weight and living a healthy life. Average adult French Bulldogs should have a body weight between 19 and 29 pounds for males, while 18 to 28 pounds for females. The most common indications that your Frenchie is overweight include lack of muscle definition and difficulty breathing during brief exercises. In terms of visual indicators, a Frenchie within their healthy weight will have a thin layer of fat covering their ribs. Meanwhile, those with excess fat have noticeable deposits in the chest and stomach area. Also, you should be able to see and feel their spine as they bend and curl into a sleeping position. Furthermore, Frenchies have an hourglass form, with a visible waistline that is smaller than their chest when they are not overweight. Regardless of these symptoms, it is always advisable to seek confirmation from a professional veterinarian. Feeding an obese Frenchie means maintaining a consistent food plan throughout the day to aid in weight loss. Additionally, this stops your dog from eating more than it requires. Apart from planned feeding times, serving the correct meal proportions is essential. If your Frenchie is overweight, owners should focus on how much food is offered to them. Reducing their daily kibble intake by half a cup can help them significantly reduce weight. Moreover, you should offer them foods with fewer calories, more fiber, and more protein. As a result, your Frenchie will burn more calories and lose weight more quickly. It is preferable to give your dog treats that contain only one ingredient, are low in calories, and contain no added sugar, such as sweet potato and blueberry bites. Alternatively, you can treat your dog with items that are already in your refrigerator, such as tiny portions of sweet potatoes, apples, and bananas. Regularly weigh your dog, monitor how many calories they intake, and establish a target body weight for them. Also, pain can make a Frenchie nervous and unable to eat, so keep an eye out for evident signs of injury. Another common reason for your French Bulldog not to eat is discomfort in the mouth caused by dental issues. Furthermore, gastrointestinal conditions, certain medicines, vaccination, overfeeding, or other serious health problems can cause a French Bulldog not to eat. As a result, you must keep an eye on your Frenchie and contact your veterinarian if the condition persists for weeks. Do French Bulldogs Eat a Lot? French Bulldogs are opportunistic feeders by nature. Thus, they will continue to eat as long as you provide pet food. They may begin to require more than is necessary to fulfill their appetite due to this behavior. Also, when a French Bulldog is agitated, it may begin to overeat. The most effective strategy to combat stress-related overeating is to thrive in a calm environment. At times, your dog may become bored and eat more than usual to keep itself occupied somehow. Thus, you must keep a watch on any of these factors. Can French Bulldogs Eat Bones? Dogs should not consume cooked bones of any kind. The bones may splinter, resulting in deadly shards that might cause injury due to choking hazards. Thus, if you wish to offer your Frenchie a bone, vets recommend raw meat bones, preferably from farm-raised chicken. These are best given after a meal to prevent them from eating too much. Remove it after around ten minutes and store it in the refrigerator to keep it fresh for tomorrow. To avoid bacterial contamination, it is recommended to discard it after a few days and keep it separate from other raw meat and food. Can French Bulldogs Be Vegetarians? Each Frenchie is one-of-a-kind. Simply because your French Bulldog likes veggies does not mean it can go full-on vegetarian. Also, bear in mind that many veggies are dangerous and toxic to your French Bulldog. Certain vegetables are acceptable to be fed to a French Bulldog, but only in small portions. Final Thoughts French Bulldogs are, without a doubt, playful, intelligent, and compassionate dogs. On the other hand, Frenchies are greedy eaters, and food serves as their primary motivator. Thus, a critical component of owning this breed is understanding how much, how frequently, and what food to feed a French Bulldog. You can supply dry food, wet food, raw food diets, or a homemade diet for your pet. Since Frenchie pups and adults may have food sensitivities, providing or making the best dog food for their age and nutritional requirements is critical. By doing so, you can help your Frenchie prevent undesirable health problems. This can help guarantee that your Frenchie receives the safest and healthiest diet as much as possible. How much your French Bulldog should eat depends on their size when they are at a healthy weight and how energetic they are. That means that you won't feed your French Bulldog as much as you would feed more energetic small dogs of the same healthy weight, such as a Jack Russell Terrier. Of course, if you have an unusually energetic French Bulldog, you may need to feed them more. However, a number of factors go into this formula: Fixed vs. An intact French Bulldog requires slightly more calories than one that is fixed. Underweight vs. An underweight French Bulldog needs more than a healthy French Bulldog, whereas an overweight Frenchie needs less food. Activity level. Very active Frenchies need more calories every day than those that tend to be couch potatoes. French bulldog puppies need more calories than older dogs. A puppy that is under four months needs considerably more, while a puppy that is four months to an adult needs slightly more. How many cups of food should I feed my French Bulldog? Just how many cups of food your French Bulldog actually needs depends on how many calories are in the food. Because French Bulldogs have a fairly low body weight and low energy level, it is best to choose a food without many calories per cup. Lower than calories per cup is a good idea. This way, your 22 pound French Bulldog will be able to eat at least a cup of food a day. Any less than that, and your French Bulldog may still feel hungry even when they have had as many calories per pound as they are supposed to. How to stretch out French Bulldog feeding? Most French Bulldogs have a seemingly natural hunger that is almost insatiable. Here are a few tips to help keep your Frenchie satisfied: Divide meals up. Your French Bulldog is much more likely to be satisfied if they get multiple meals a day. About half a cup twice a day will be a more satisfying eating routine than one cup in the morning or evening. Three meals is even better for most French Bulldogs. Include healthy treats. A few treats can really impact your dog's overall calorie consumption if you are using high-calorie commercially available treats. However, by giving your French Bulldog green beans and other low-calorie vegetables, you can fill their bellies without exceeding their calorie limitations. Provide food for training treats. Choose dry dog food. Dry dog food will seem to go much further than raw food or wet food. Give your French Bulldog a healthy amount of food It can be very tempting to give your French Bulldog as much food as they want. After all, this breed is a master of the mournful puppy eyes. However, feeding your dog too much can result in serious consequences for their health, so it is very important to stick to the rules and only give your French Bulldog as much as they should have. Remember that healthy and filling treats like green beans are a great way to round out their diet. Bake the cookies for minutes depending on the size and thickness. Let your Frenchie enjoy a healthy balanced homemade treat once cooled down. This question will depend on many variables. Age of your Frenchie , amount of daily activity and how often you feed your dog. Some people have extremely busy schedule and can only feed once daily while others have more time to feed smaller portions throughout the day. Off course we recommend feeding minimum twice daily smaller portions rather than one big meal a day which can cause health issues in the long term. You want to develop healthy habits early on. It is recommended to feed your French Bulldog puppy three small meals when they are under six months of age. By months you can move to two meals daily as your Frenchie matures and ready to conquer the world! For an adult French Bulldog with normal weight of 25 lbs baseline we would recommend calories per day. This is based on our golden rule which is approximately 23 calories per pound of body weight per day. We came up with this formula after speaking to many breeders and French Bulldog vets and experts. This formula can be your guideline at how much your Frenchie should eat per day. As mentioned prior ideally the calories should be divided to smaller portions throughout the day. This is probably true based on dogs that are in the same weight range but different breeds and highly active. French Bulldogs are unlike any other breed. They are not hyper highly active dogs and that should be taken into consideration when calculating the perfect amount your Frenchie needs to eat per day. If you have any reservations in regards to the specific amount always consult with your veterinarian hopefully specializes in Frenchies or your breeder about these numbers. If you want a more accurate calculation based on weight and activity level check our Frenchie Dog Food Per Day Calculator. Why can't I leave food for my Frenchie out all the time? Their natural hunger is a normal characteristic the French Bulldog breed, however, you should be extra mindful to not overfeed your Frenchie. Why does my French Bulldog eat so fast? Frenchies love their food so much they scurf it down. Eating so fast can cause some discomfort, vomiting, gas and is a hazard of choking. In certain breeds like the French Bulldog Gastric Dilatation Volvulus can occur due to fast eating and their large chest. This condition is life threatening with serious irreversible damage or worse, death. We will cover this topic in a future Pawsletter however, what we can say right now is that there is no home remedy. For the reasons above it is recommended to slow down your Frenchie from eating fast. How can I slow down my Frenchie from eating so fast? The following are methods to slow your French Bulldog down while eating: Ball method - placing a ball on top of their food is one affordable and easy fix. Off course the ball should be brand new, clean and designated for feeding only. You should ensure you have a ball that is natural and safe without chimicals or harsh dye. Your Frenchie will be moving the ball around with his or her nose digging for food and this action alone slows them down. Moving from bowl to bowl will slow down the feeding. Slow feeder - It is highly recommended to use a slow feeder and this is probably the best method of slowing down your dog's feeding. What is the best Frenchie food bowl? A bowl is not just a bowl. Your Frenchie bowl is one of the most important essential products in their life since he or she will eat and drink out if it multiple times a day. Buying the wrong bowl could put your French Bulldog at risk. Just to give you an idea in , Petco issued a recall for stainless steel bowls that were radioactive. We recommend looking at these features and finding whats right for your French Bulldog: Elevated eating - to prevent neck injury and digestion issues we recommend elevating the feeding bowls. You can buy those made specifically elavated or you can do it yourself. Note: make sure the elevation is appropriate for your French Bulldog's height. Material - majority of dog bowls are made from plastic, ceramic, or stainless steel. Plastic- dog trainers, vets and researchers agree that plastic is the worst option you can buy. Certain plastic bowls contain traces of hormones, and if ingested by your Frenchie, could lead to a number of possible health issues. Dogs that eat from plastic bowls will often time develop acne and irritation around the muzzle and chin due to the bacteria that develops on the plastic over time and is impossible to clean. Your vet's first recommendation would be to never feed your dog from a plastic bowl. Sadly, lead exists in today's ceramic bowls as well. If you choose to get a ceramic bowl for your Frenchie please please make sure it has been made with lead-free glaze. Stainless steel - Pet experts agree that stainless steel is the best option for your dog's food bowl. There are different grades of stainless steel and some manufacturers make lesser grades of stainless steel to reduce their costs in order to offer a cheaper product for the consumer. While the cheap price may be tempting to you it is best to invest in a higher grade quality bowl for your Frenchie. If the grade of the bowl is not listed it will usually mean this is an inferior quality. Avoid any bowls that contain warnings like "not dishwasher safe" or "pet use only". A quality dog bowl would be safe for use by a human. If the bowl is not good enough for you to use it is not good enough for your Frenchie either. To conclude we recommend looking for a bowl from a reputable company that is health conscious, cares about dogs and performs regular tests for possible contaminants. Always research and question quality. Never settle for less because our dogs deserve only the best. We write our informative Pawsletters due to questions we get daily. How many cups of food should I feed my French Bulldog? Before you look at the French Bulldog feeding chart below, you might want the quick answer to how many cups of food to feed your French Bulldog. As a general rule of thumb, you should feed a French Bulldog puppy aged 8 to 12 weeks around 1 and a half cups of food a day, in 3 separate meals. As your Frenchie gets older, the number of cups of food you should feed them will change. You can see the cup amounts and frequencies in the French Bulldog feeding chart graphic below. This is exactly what we fed Claude as he was growing up. They range a specific French bulldog puppy food, and on the packaging you will see a version of the chart above, including how best to feed your own puppy. Handy Hint: To stop your Frenchie from bloating and possibly choking you should use a suitable feeding bowl. Here are the best French Bulldog food bowls that vets recommend. When you take your puppy to his new home, he should already be used to eating puppy food. As I mentioned earlier, you should be feeding your French bulldog puppy 3 times a day. They need that regularity as they are growing and burning a lot of calories. You know how energetic they are! How much you feed them at each mealtime will typically be half a cup of their dry puppy food. Across the day, that will equate 1. However, their weight and health will then determine how much you feed them as they get older. Calories matter, but are hard to count As French bulldogs get older, you should try to feed them according to their weight. For every pound, they should be fed between 25 and 30 calories. However, for the rest of this French bulldog puppy feeding guide, I am just going to talk in cups. Puppy weight How can weigh your puppy at the vets or, and this is can be a more interesting and fun way if your puppy already knows how to sit, have them sit on a scale at home. It will not be as accurate as a scale at the vet, but it could be a cheap and fun experience for you and your pet. Because of this, your puppy may be a little stubborn about eating dry and wet food if they were only just recently weaned. Here is where the math gets a little more detailed, but not too complicated. When they are between 8 to 12 weeks old, the puppy should be fed about 1. This food should be high in calories since they need extra nutrients that they are no longer getting from their mother. This kind of follows the main rule when it comes to spreading out the meals to 3 times a day. But for younger pups, many owners will split the 1. Because feeding them 0. Once they are between 6 and 9 months old, they should be used to their eating routine. That is when the main rule is applied because by then, the pup will be maturing into its adult size and should weigh between 20 and 25 pounds. What about older dogs? Also, if you are wondering how much they should be fed once they start hitting their senior years, they should be fed a little less as long only if they are not as active. Make sure you still stretch out the meals to 3 to 4 times like when they were puppies because it is not uncommon for their stomachs to weaken with old age. Overweight or underweight? French bulldog puppies usually weight between 8. Once they reach 6 to 9 months, they are just at or are closer to reaching their adult weight, .If the puppy is underweight, then add very small increments to each meal every day until they are no longer underweight. It is important to not add too much food because of the possibility of them getting a twisted stomach. If the puppy is overweight, you can either slightly reduce the size of their meal until they lose weight, or you can give them more exercise. Many people prefer the later since it helps the pup to get stronger and adds more bonding time. The same methods apply to grown French bulldogs as well. Handy Hint: Read this guide which explains how to check if you have a fat French Bulldog who needs to lose weight, with tips on how to get the pounds down. If the dog does not appear to be gaining weight when they are underweight or vice versa if they are overweight, you might want to take them to the vet since it could be a sign that something is affecting their health. Health conditions Since not every animal is the same, ask your vet the next time your pup has a check-up what a French bulldog of their size and age should weigh. Health factors like diabetes yes, dogs can have diabetes , can make your pup need a more strict diet or feeding routine. Here are some different diets and feeding routines. Raw food vs. Many dog lovers say that there are too many preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and protein in dry and wet food. While the raw food diet can be more natural, especially if it is organic, you also have to make sure your pup would be getting more foods with vitamins and minerals mixed in with the raw food that your pup would need. Raw food diets can be more expensive, require more storage room for the meats and veggies, and take longer to prepare. However, you would be personally ensuring that your little French bulldog pup is getting their full daily nutrition without harmful by-products and additives. Is there a good dry food diet? Possibly the biggest questions out of all of them: is there any good dry dog food out there and how do I find them? The answer is yes, there can be some healthy dry dog food products, but it takes some time to look for. The key is to look for dog food that does not contain any preservatives, fillers, wheat, corn, and too much protein. Fillers basically do not provide any nutritional value and can even harm your dog since most of the ingredients they use as fillers are common allergies for dogs that can cause skin conditions, bowel issues, and more. Wheat and corn are included since they are also a popular allergen for dogs. Too much protein is even more dangerous for them since it can put more pressure on the organs, throw off nutritional balance, increase the likelihood of diabetes, and can harm dogs that already have diabetes. Another two meat choices would be duck and turkey, but these are a little less common to find, especially if you are looking for a French bulldog specific dog food. Your dog eats his food too quickly Another common problem is how do you control how fast your French bulldog puppy eats. French bulldogs love to eat their food and eat it fast, which is one of the primary causes of GDV. Frenchies will stop eating for a number of reasons, some more serious that others. Conclusion So there you have it, your guide to how much you should feed your French bulldog puppy. Everything in this feeding schedule and the French bulldog feeding chart you see is based on personal experience. Once in the morning, and once in the early evening. Keep a regular feeding routine, and your Frenchies will stay as healthy as ours has! How often should I feed my French Bulldog puppy? Home » How often should I feed my French Bulldog puppy? Your puppy has been on unlimited food all of the time. If on the smaller side 5lbs , we recommend four times per day. If a little bit stouter, you can start with three times a day. We recommend giving them as much as they want at each setting while they are growing babies. As they age and grow you can take it down to times per day. Two feedings per day seems to be the amount of times most people end up feeding their Frenchies. When you place your puppy on a feeding schedule it helps with the potty training as well. After eating, take them outside to potty. Make sure to tell your little one how good he is for doing his duty outside. Basically you just fill the water up to the level of the dogfood. If they continue to turn their nose up at the kibble, try adding a bit of canned dogfood to the kibble. Puppies are like humans. Some overeat when stressed and some undereat. Changing to a new home is an environmental stressor even though we are sure your Frenchie is enjoying being the center of your world. Each Frenchie is different and each human family is different. Do your best at scheduling for you and your Frenchie to live your best lives. We do not claim to be veterinarians. French Bulldogs can easily become overweight or underweight , especially the lazy ones. Some french bulldogs are hyperactive while others are couch potatoes. It is also critical that you maintain a consistent feeding schedule and never slack off on feeding your French Bulldog. Even more important than that is feeding your Frenchie the proper amount of food daily. Young Frenchies have high caloric and nutrient needs. French Bulldogs aged anywhere from weeks of age need a total of 1. Spreading out the meals minimizes the peaks of energy your French Bulldog will experience due to dramatic rises and decreases in blood sugar levels between meals. Feeding only twice daily can sometimes lead to gastric dilatation volvulus. By this stage, your French Bulldog is ready to get into an eating routine that they will continue on for the rest of their happy, little chubby lives, barring no serious medical ailments later on in life. From around 6 months to 1 year of age, you can start feeding your French Bulldog a very high quality adult doggy food. It is important to maintain a strict routine for your French Bulldog. You can always supplement a few treats in between. Wink wink. A half a cup at a time will make sure your Frenchie is pleasantly tubby and happy. Some days, it seems like a French Bulldog can never get enough food. This seemingly natural hunger is relative to the breed and you should be weary of overfeeding your French Bulldog. Monitor your Frenchie as she eats and make sure she only eats her own food, especially if you feed your French Bulldog near other pets. Note that non-neutered males may grow into the low 30lb range. Always consult a vet. Ideally, 2. This sort of consult is always quick and cheap sometimes free and you owe it to your companion to get the opinion of an expert veterinarian. Overweight Frenchies can suffer from some very severe health problems, including heart disease just like humans , labored breathing, and lack of physical exercise. Never take a French Bulldog out to play in sweltering heat, they can die. Generally, older French Bulldogs will require slightly less food than their young counterparts. However, do not restrict food from your French Bulldog if they appear to be underweight or hungry. A reader pointed out in the comments below that these calculations would put french bulldogs in the 40lbs range somewhere around calories per day. This is obviously an outlier situation and no french bulldog needs that many calories. This means feeding your french bulldog less food as they age. If they look thinner than usual, you can move up by 5 calories per pound of weight until you find a magic number. No french bulldog is identical and our suggestions are based on average weights computed to a mean average calorie intake suggestion. Read: I use this calculator and a pad of paper. See this guide in order to determine the appropriate weight for your Frenchie. Subject: How much should I feed my French Bulldog?

If you click and purchase, we may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. Most importantly, Goldendoodles do not come cheap , so we urge you to not fall for breeders who claim to sell their Goldendoodle puppies at a much lower price than other breeders. Reputable breeders spend a lot of time, money, and energy to produce healthy new litters. The growing popularity of this adorable hybrid breed has attracted countless puppy mills and Doodle scammers. Although puppy mills might tempt you with prices way below average and the immediate availability of dogs, you should avoid them at all costs. More often than not, puppy mills often use unhealthy parent dogs to produce new litters, while keeping both parents and puppies in horrific conditions. The dogs are often malnourished, kept in dirty environments, or even tortured. Naturally, your goal should be to not support any unethical breeders. As we briefly mentioned, ethical breeders take great pride in producing healthy litters from healthy parent dogs. One of the factors responsible for the high price of adopting a Goldendoodle puppy is that genetic and health testing does come at a certain cost. But why is it so important? Genetic testing ensures that the parent dogs do not have any defective genes , which might be carried onto the puppies. Another thing you should check is whether a breeder offers a health guarantee for their puppies. Most commonly, reputable breeders offer a two-year health guarantee, which covers all genetic health conditions that the parents have been tested for. You might also want to do some additional research on Good Dog , which focuses on reputable breeders in the US. These organizations closely check if the breeder is meeting their highest standards of health and genetic testing. However, not all breeders are affiliated or certified by the organizations we mentioned above. On the other hand, if a breeder claims to do health and genetic testing with or without any certifications and affiliations, always ask to see proof. Look for online reviews on forums and dedicated online communities, like here at Doodle Doods. Check with your friends and neighbors to see if any of them have past experience with certain breeders. Additionally, reputable breeders do not have anything to hide, and most of them will gladly put you in touch with their past customers. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. A first Generation F1 Goldendoodle is half golden retriever, half poodle. Deeper generations involve crossing a Goldendoodle back to the parent breed. An F1B Goldendoodle consists of a Goldendoodle crossed with a poodle. These are generally hypoallergenic and non-shedding. Goldendoodles are gentle and affectionate dogs with an easy-going temperament. They are extremely intelligent, friendly, and easy to train. According to the Goldendoodle Association of North America, they rank in the top 5 most intelligent dogs. The golden retriever ranks 4 and Poodle 2 on most intelligent dog list. They are also very social. Hypoallergenic and Low to Non-Shedding. Hypoallergenic means, below-average allergy causing symptoms. Some people are allergic to pet dander. Pet dander consists of specks of skin that are released from dogs that shed. This can cause allergies in some people. Symptoms would include, a runny nose, sneezing, coughing, itchy eyes, and skin irritation on humans. Because Goldendoodles are a mixed breed, the poodle genes limit any dander that would normally be released from a golden retriever. History Where are German Shepherd Dogs from? Perhaps never in the history of any breed has such concerted effort been put into improving a dog, mostly due to the formation in of the Verein fur Deutsche Scharferhunde SV, an organization in Germany devoted to overseeing the breeding of the German Shepherd. Breeders sought to develop not only a herding dog but also one that could excel at jobs requiring courage, athleticism, and intelligence. During World War I, they were the obvious choice for a war sentry. The Wolfdog was later dropped as it caused many people to fear the dogs. How big do German Shepherd Dogs get? The double-coat, with a thick undercoat that sheds twice annually, loses hair continuously but can be maintained with regular brushing one or two times weekly. What are the German Shepherd Dog colors? Black, tan, solid black and solid sable. How long do German Shepherd Dogs live? Lifespan: 10—12 years What are some German Shepherd Dogs facts and information? The German Shepherd held the number one spot in American popularity for many years. Although presently it has dropped from the top spot, the German Shepherd remains as one of the most versatile dogs ever created, serving as a police dog, war dog, guide dog, search-and-rescue dog, narcotics- or explosives-detecting dog, show dog, pet—and even shepherd. Vet visits, injections and health checks are all too often in the early stages and, following all that, the final decision you have to make is whether or not to have your Labradoodle spayed or neutered. Spayed or Neutered? The procedure usually involves cutting a small incision in the abdomen. Whilst recommendations vary, vets typically suggest that you should have your Labradoodle spayed or neutered between the ages of four and nine months. This is thought to have long-term health benefits, as well as helping to prevent behavioural traits, such as marking and aggression. Whilst some recommend spaying before first heat as young as five months , others suggest that this can increase the risk of mammary tumours. We would always recommend consulting your vet for a personalised opinion. There are rumours that spaying or neutering changes the personality of your pet. However, experts have said that this is not at all true. There are many reasons why you should have your Labradoodle spayed or neutered, not least of all because it will likely improve their quality of life and stop you from worrying about a litter of puppies. Spaying is proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer and uterine infections, and neutering similarly prevents testicular cancer. So, if you want to prevent these major Labradoodle killers, neutering and spaying is a sure fire way. Neutering your male Labradoodle will also ensure that he is on his best behaviour at all times. Neutering prevents aggressive and territorial behaviours, and also means that he wont be spending his entire walk hunting for a partner. So, if you want to prevent these embarrassments, get your Labradoodle neutered early on! See also Is Your Labradoodle Bored? Millions of animals are euthanised every year because there are simply not enough willing owners to cater for endless litters of puppies. Having this done will prevent unwanted litters and ultimately save the lives of millions of baby Labradoodle that would end up in shelters. Remember… No, the procedure is not painful. Female Labradoodles can reproduce as young as four months old, and male Labradoodles can as of six months. In a study , researchers found that neutered Retrievers are twice as likely to develop any joint diseases, and it showed it is worse for neutered Goldendoodles. These golden beauties were found to be four times as likely to have hip dysplasia or any other type of joint disease. The study shows that the longer you wait to neuter or spay your dog, the less likely your dog is to develop any problems with their joints. The Limitations of These Studies There is obviously always the possibility of bias or errors in every study ever made. The studies may or may not answer the question about the best age to neuter a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle. This can also be said for the study done on German Shepherds. In addition to the limitations on how comparable the different breeds are, it is also important to be on guard for any the potential bias in the studies. What can we learn from these studies about the best age to neuter a Labradoodle? What makes these studies quite reliable, is that the number of studies that are discovering the same results are increasing every year, and thereby giving more credibility to the findings. Likewise, the fact that several breeds including Labradoodles and Goldendoodles are finding similar results, allows us to start generalizing when talking about different breeds. This shows that this might be a general canine issue rather than just an issue with some specific breed. All these studies tell us what the most likely outcome is when talking about lots of different dogs. My Monty when we got him In your specific dog, it is not possible to get a specific and guaranteed answer as there are deviations in every study ever made. And perhaps your dog is one of those deviations. I am not such a person. I believe that any person should, after examining all these studies, put off neutering or spaying a dog until they are at least one year old. The best age to neuter a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle is as late as you can but wait at least one year. Final Summary Regarding Females If you wait with spaying a female there are some risks involved. But if treated properly in time, it is thankfully curable. If you have a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle as a service dog, then neutering your Doodle will avoid the inconvenience of cycles twice a year. This is something to really consider if you rely on your dog for everyday routines such as a guiding service or using it for working situations like hunt trials and so on. But as we established earlier, if you neuter your dog too early it can leave her susceptible to a wide variety of cancers and also some orthopedic disorders. Dog Food: Every dog needs to eat correctly, and finding the best food for your dog can be challenging, as the market is absolutely flooded with products. Labradoodles come in three sizes—Miniature, Medium, and Standard. It really depends on the individual dog, so have a chat with your vet to ascertain the best time for your Labradoodle to be neutered. There is quite an array of information and opinions as to when is the best time to neuter, so we checked out various veterinarian websites, academic institutions, and associations to see what they had to say on the matter. In fact, many experts today, including Dr. As American Humane explains, most puppies can be neutered from 8 weeks of age, and this was backed up by various veterinary websites. The study concluded that early neutering is most beneficial for humane organizations and those who want to breed responsibly. Can Adult Dogs Be Neutered? Absolutely, as long as your vet has deemed your dog healthy enough to undergo the procedure. Most rescue organizations and shelters allow dogs to be adopted on the condition that the new owner gets that dog neutered within a certain timeframe or, in some cases, even before the dog is adopted. This is to help reduce the risk of adopters using their adopted dogs for breeding and potentially contributing to the problem of overpopulation and increased shelter intake. Learn more » The Labradoodle , a crossbreed of a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, has become increasingly popular due to their friendly and affectionate nature, low-shedding coat, and intelligence. However, as with any breed, there are important considerations when spaying or neutering your Labradoodle, and many people might wonder about the best time to perform this procedure. The short answer is when the dog is 4—9 months old, but keep reading as we discuss other options and the benefits and drawbacks of the procedure to help you be better informed. The optimal timing for neutering male Labradoodles can be a bit more flexible. While most experts recommend neutering or spaying around 6 months, some evidence suggests that waiting until they are fully mature can help reduce the risk of health issues like hip dysplasia. However, waiting too long can also increase the risk of certain health issues, such as prostate problems. One of the most significant when it comes to spaying your female Labradoodle is the prevention of unwanted pregnancies and the total elimination of heat cycles, which can be messy and stressful for you and your dog. Spaying can also reduce the risk of reproductive health issues like uterine infections and breast tumors. For male Labradoodles, neutering can help reduce the risk of certain health issues, such as testicular cancer and prostate problems. Neutered males may also be less likely to exhibit behaviors like marking and aggression. The Potential Drawbacks of Spaying or Neutering Your Labradoodle Complications While there are benefits to spaying or neutering your Labradoodle, there are also potential drawbacks. When a dog undergoes anesthesia and surgery, there is a risk of complications like infection, bleeding, and adverse reactions to the anesthesia. While these risks are relatively low, you must consider them before spaying or neutering your Labradoodle. Behavioral Changes While neutering can help reduce certain negative behaviors in male Labradoodles, such as marking and aggression, it can also lead to decreased energy levels and an increased likelihood of weight gain. Similarly, spaying a female dog can lead to increased appetite and reduced activity levels. Most experts consider spaying and neutering to be safe. However, any surgery and anesthesia carry risks, including infection, bleeding, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. No, spaying or neutering your Labradoodle will make them unable to reproduce. If you want to breed your Labradoodle, you should not spay or neuter them. Some evidence suggests that waiting to spay or neuter can lead to better overall health outcomes for Labradoodles. Waiting until they are fully mature around 1—2 years can allow their bodies to develop fully, which might reduce the risk of certain health issues. After the procedure, your Labradoodle may experience discomfort and decreased energy levels. Your Labradoodle may also need to wear an Elizabethan collar a. The cost of spaying or neutering a Labradoodle can vary depending on your location and chosen veterinarian. Generally, spaying is more expensive than neutering because it is a more complicated surgery. Some clinics offer low-cost spay-and-neuter programs, though, and financial assistance may be available for pet owners who cannot afford the procedure. Conclusion Most experts recommend spaying or neutering your pet when they are 4—9 months old or more specifically, before the female has her first heat cycle. That said, some people argue that it is better to wait until your pet is an adult in order to let their body fully develop. If this is the case, constant monitoring and physical separation of males from females during their first heat cycles is imperative to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Drawbacks of the procedure include complications from surgery, such as infection, bleeding, adverse reactions to anesthesia, and behavioral changes. By Kern Campbell New puppies can be very exciting. There are many things that you will need to consider, such as the food you are going to feed, training, and when you are going to have your Labradoodle spayed or neutered. Are you trying to figure out the best age to spay or neuter your Labradoodle? This can all depend on many different factors. A male Labradoodle should be spayed between 6 and 12 months of age. Female Labradoodles that will be less than 45 pounds as adults should be spayed at around 4 to 6 months of age. Your vet can also discuss all the pros and cons of spaying and neutering your Labradoodle early vs. Neutering is often used to remove the testicles in your male Labradoodle, but technically, it means to make your dog gender neutral so it can be used for a male or female. The most common age your vet will recommend spaying or neutering your Labradoodle is when they are around 6 months old. There are many different factors that will influence when you should spay and neuter your Labradoodle. Large to giant breed dogs will mature later in their life, and some people will want to wait until the dog is a few months older so that they are fully mature before spaying and neutering them. They recommend a different age for different size dogs. Smaller dogs under 45 pounds : Your vet will advise that you should spay your Labradoodle before their first heat cycle. Most dogs will have their first heat cycle anywhere between 5 and 10 months. Your vet will advise that your female dog be spayed prior to their first cycle to help reduce their risk of having mammary cancer. Larger Dogs Over 50lbs : Some vets may advise larger Labradoodle to wait until they are 5 to 15 months old. It may also decrease the chance that your dog develops urinary incontinence. These are all common problems seen in older larger breed Labradoodles. When Should I have my male dog neutered? Your vet is able to do this procedure at any age as long as the testicles are present, most vets will recommend that you have your male Labradoodle neutered between 6 to 12 months. Smaller dogs tend to mature faster and are usually neutered around 6 months, while large breed dogs tend to take longer to become fully mature, and you will want to wait until your Labradoodle is around 12 to 18 months of age before neutering them. If your dog does start to show aggressive or unwanted mating behaviors, you can have them neutered sooner to help stop these unwanted behaviors. Why should you spay your Labradoodle? There are many benefits to having your Labradoodle spayed. These are the most common reasons that you would want to consider spaying your Labradoodle. Overpopulation: By spaying your Labradoodle, you are helping decrease the number of unwanted litters and dogs in shelters. Mammary cancer: By spaying your Labradoodle early, you will decrease the chance of mammary cancer. This occurs very commonly in older intact female Labradoodles. This disease can cause your dogs to become very sick and possibly need emergency surgery to treat the infection. Sometimes, this can even be fatal. Stop unwanted guests: By spaying your Labradoodle, you will cut down on the number of unwanted male dogs unexpectedly entering your backyard attempting to mate with your Labradoodle. A male dog will smell the pheromone released by your female dog up to a mile away. If the male is intact, they will find a way to get over and fence to mate with your female dog. Before spaying your Labradoodle, your veterinarian should have a complete health checkup. This ensures that there are no underlying conditions that would cause your Labradoodle not to have a successful surgery. Why would you want your Male Labradoodle to be neutered? Most people neuter their Labradoodle to prevent them from getting a female dog pregnant. There are many other reasons that you may want your dog neutered. Decrease Unwanted pet Population The most common reason people have their Labradoodle neutered is to help prevent the overpopulation of dogs. There are many pets who end up in a shelter. By having your Labradoodle neutered, you can help decrease this population. A single male Labradoodle can mate with many female dogs each day, leading to many offspring. Prevent aggressive Behaviors Dog fights are often between unneutered male dogs, or the dog who instigated the fight will often not be neutered. These extra testosterone hormones can cause your dog to show aggressive behaviors. Having your dog neutered, will cause a large decline in testosterone hormones, thus decreasing their drive to fight other dogs. Prevent looking for a Girlfriend Unneutered male Labradoodles tend to look for a girlfriend. They will try anything possible to escape their yard. Many can even climb very tall fences. This can cause your Labradoodle to become lost or even hit by a car. Neutering your Labradoodle can help keep them at home more and out of trouble. Prevent any health issues. Many Labradoodles can develop health conditions from not being neutered. Common health issues seen in an intact male are testicular cancer and prostate issues. These can develop as your dog gets older. Having your Labradoodle neutered will eliminate the chance of testicular cancer and decrease the formation of any prostate disease. Prevent unwanted behaviors Marking their territory and humping things is a behavior that can be hard to break. Once your Labradoodle starts these behaviors, it can be almost impossible to get them to stop. Having your dog neutered will help decrease or eliminate them for doing these behaviors. It is best to have them neutered before they start, as sometimes, once they start these behaviors, it is hard to correct. These are: Some vet offices will let you take your dog home the same day as surgery is done, others want to keep the Labradoodle dog overnight. Keep your Labradoodle inside for 2 weeks after surgery. Only let them go outside to potty and on a very short walk while on a leash. Keep your Labradoodle calm and quiet and not allow them to run and jump around. Make sure that your Labradoodle cannot lick at their incision. You may have to put a cone of shame on your dog to help prevent them from getting to their incision. Inspect their incision each day and let your vet know as soon as you notice any problems, smells, or discharge. Do not bath your Labradoodle for 10 to 14 days after surgery Notify your vet immediately if your Labradoodle is lethargic, not wanting to eat, vomiting, or having diarrhea or loose stool. Make sure that your Labradoodle receives any pain medications and antibiotics that your vet has prescribed to them after the procedure. The pain medication may only be needed for a day or two, but some dogs will need pain medication for a few days while they recover. An easy way to tell if your Labradoodle is painful is to monitor their activity. If your Labradoodle is not active, they are probably painful Just because your Labradoodle feels great and wants to be active, they should still be calm and quiet for 14 days after surgery. Is surgery risky? No surgery is without risk. Your veterinarian will examine your Labradoodle before surgery. Your Labradoodle will be placed under general anesthesia and will be monitored with monitoring equipment for the whole surgery. Many veterinary surgeries have a whole team of people working on your Labradoodle not just your vet. This starts from before surgery to recovery to being discharged from the hospital. Your vet will ask that you not feed your Labradoodle after 10 pm the night before. This helps prevent your Labradoodle from vomiting during their surgery from the anesthesia. Make sure that you follow these pre-op instructions and anything else that your vet requires for your Labradoodle to have a successful surgery. The cost of spaying or neutering your Labradoodle will all depend on where you live. Vets in a bigger city will charge a little more than a vet in the country. Many other factors may affect the cost. Most veterinarians recommend pre-operative bloodwork be run on your Labradoodle before surgery. This will check liver and kidney function before surgery. They will also give your Labradoodle pre and post-op pain medications. These are all added expenses to the cost of surgery. Vets highly recommend that you have pre-op bloodwork done even in very young Labradoodle. Your Labradoodle could have been born with a congenital disability that could cause severe to fatal results if not caught before surgery. While it is not very common, it does happen. Some dogs develop a little slower and may not handle anesthesia as well. For Labradoodle with a liver or kidney defect, or if their lab values are not in the proper range, your vet will choose a different type of anesthesia. If these organs are not functioning properly or not fully, then it is best to use an anesthetic drug metabolized by their lungs or not perform the procedure at all. There are also added costs for overweight Labradoodles, currently pregnant dogs, or dogs going through their heat cycle. This is because it takes a little more time and is much more labor-intensive, especially if your vet is also trying to perform a c-section and save these baby puppy lives. There are low-cost clinics that can do the procedure at a discounted rate. These clinics often receive grants and funds from the state to help offset the cost of the procedure. This is one reason that they do not have to charge as much for the procedure as a regular veterinary clinic. Low-cost clinics may also have minimal monitoring equipment and usually do not do surgery on large breeds or overweight patients. Final Thoughts There are many different pros and cons when you choose to spay and neuter your Labradoodle. Your vet can help you determine the best time for your pet. Many vets will recommend that you spay your dog between 5 and 15 months of age. Delaying the spay can lead to mammary cancer, pyometra, or other health issues. However, there is renewed interest in the question of age-appropriate spay and neuter of puppies, in view numerous scientific studies that found significant health implications related to this common procedure. As a guide, months for puppies that will weigh under 45 lbs when adults and between months of age for puppies that will weigh over 45 lbs when adults. Larger dogs take longer to grow, and the age difference is mainly to do with the growth cycle. Are there risks and benefits to spaying and neutering? Some of these include fear of anesthesia, anesthesia complication and financial constraints. Some benefits include a decreases in the risk of mammary and testicular cancers, uterine infections, prevents pet overpopulation, and prevents undesirable behaviors. Risks and benefits of early spaying and neutering Risks: University of California, Davis, performed a study on golden retrievers in that suggested while early sterilization prevented many diseases, it may have increased the risk of other problems cranial cruciate ligament rupture, hemangiosarcoma, mast cell tumors, lymphosarcoma, and orthopedic issues. Despite these findings, the study stressed that more studies on the link between sterilization age and the onset of certain diseases are needed to help understand the implications. Benefits: According to Dr. J Am Vet Med Assoc ;.Risks and benefits of late spaying and neutering Risks: Unwanted pregnancies, financial obligations and ethical dilemmas regarding the newborn puppies. Many people simply either do not know that their female dog is pregnant or the dog experiences complications that lead to costly medical interventions. Some people are also not equipped to deal with newborn puppies and the many demands that come with raising socialized and healthy puppies. These puppies can die from either inadequate care or diseases. Other adverse effects of late sterilization include obesity, stunted growth, joint dysplasia, and musculoskeletal disorders, to name a few. Despite many scientific studies and guidelines, it remains a complex question that encompass many factors that each pet owner needs to carefully consider. Very fun toy for him at 14 months old! It popped open to early and it didnt dance. But child was still delighted with toy. I had given one to another grandchild too and was told he loved it. They never said if it was defective. But i saw this one myself and saw it was. I love the movement of the puppy, it doesn't just pop up, but it also dances!!! Super cute and a wonderful unique baby gift!!! My granddaughter 8 months and great niece 10 months absolutely love them - great toy and unique. Puppy didn't pop out consistently. Could hear the lid click as if it was going to open, but didn't.
