Many factors can contribute to this condition, including age, breed, exercise habits, lifestyle changes, and environmental exposures. Bloat Bloat is a condition in which the stomach becomes full of too much food. This can lead to problems such as Hospice Dogs eating more than they should and German Shepherds being overweight and having health problems down the line. To prevent bloat, owners should keep their German Shepherds on a low-fat diet and ensure they are getting enough exercise. The condition is usually caused by age, injury, or genetics. It can cause pain and stiffness in the hip, shoulder, and other joints. In addition, it can lead to deformity in the hips and knees. Proper nutrition can help prevent these problems and improve overall health. In addition to providing the dog with the right food, keeping them warm and dry during winter, avoiding loud noises and other dangers while walking around at night, and having enough exercise are all important factors in keeping a dog healthy. The oatmeal powder may be used as a drying agent on the afflicted region by being ground into a fine powder and then mixed with water to form a paste. Epsom Salt Epsom salts are often used for aching muscles and joints, but they also have medicinal uses for wounds. They are extremely alert and sharp to notice the presence of an uninvited stranger. Once alert, your German Shepherd will immediately notify you and try dealing with the intruder itself, too. Their muscular build and intimidating barks can scare off potential trespassers, keeping you and your loved ones safe. They Are Athletic And Good-looking German Shepherds are not the kind of dogs who love laying around idle in your house. They are highly athletic and physically active. Their athletic build adds to their looks, giving them a bold and robust demeanor. The look of a fully-grown German Shepherd is comparable to a well-built soldier! This adds to their utility as police dogs and makes them excellent guard dogs. With a German Shepherd at home, you are bound to attract attention whenever you take your pet out for a walk. German Shepherds rank high on all these intelligence types. Their instinctive intelligence allows German Shepherds to perform activities they were bred for herding, chasing away smaller animals, etc. Their working and obedience intelligence make them easy to train by their human parents and guardians. Whether you are planning to take your pet on holiday or shift to a new house, you can expect your German Shepherd to be fully cooperative. This makes it easy for any pet owner to live with a German Shepherd, especially if it is their first pet. The breed carries a no-nonsense personality that is not too demanding and can adjust almost anywhere. They Are Gret With Kids And Families If their muscular build and intimidating looks make you feel as if they do not make German Shepherds good family dogs, you might want to think again! Bringing a German Shepherd home can be the best gift you can give your family! The breed is a great playmate for children and gels well with the elderly members of your family as well. While being monitored, you can leave your puppy with your children for hours and see both parties having the time of their lives! German Shepherds are also extremely affectionate and develop unconditional love and loyalty for every member of your family. They get their loyalty due to their history of being pack dogs. German Shepherds shower their owners with all the love they have once they start getting along with them. The breed is known to develop strong bonds with their owners and their family members, sticking around through thick and thin. Moreover, their high intelligence makes them reciprocate all the love, care, and affection they receive from you. Before reaching out to a dog breeder and making up your mind to parent a German Shepherd, make sure your budget allows you to purchase and maintain the dog for several years. German Shepherds are high-energy dogs who need a lot of exercise every day to burn their calories and stay fit. Ignoring their daily exercising needs can lead to unnecessary accumulation of unused energy, making them irritable and destructive. Moreover, the heavy diet of German Shepherds can make them obese in no time if you do not take them for regular walks. Apart from at least two minute walks every day, it is advisable to indulge your German Shepherd in physical activities all day long. If you already have a pet at home especially one that is smaller than a German Shepherd , you might want to think twice before bringing a German Shepherd puppy home. Its instinct might kick in at any time and the other pet may end up becoming the victim of the same if your pet is not on a leash. Moreover, make sure you keep your German Shepherd away from animals like cats, rabbits, hares, birds, etc. If you are allergic to dog hair, German Shepherd is definitely not the right pet option for you. Twice a year, you can expect your pet to blow its coat, filling your entire home with dog hair. The best way to control the hair in your house is to groom your German Shepherd regularly. They carry their natural instinct of darting toward and capturing prey if they see one. If not controlled, smaller animals around them will not be safe all the time. This prey drive can be controlled by training your German Shepherd from a young age. Make sure your pet gets extensive socialization and obedience training to curb its dangerous instinct and make it behave well when they see potential prey. Still, it is always advisable to keep your German Shepherd on a leash whenever you take it out for a walk. Being high-energy dogs, they require more food than most breeds. Before you bring a German Shepherd home, make sure you consult the breeder about the nutritional requirements and dietary needs of your new companion. Whether you feed your pet dry kibble or homemade food, it should contain the right amounts of protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and water. When it comes to feeding your German Shepherd, frequency also plays a major role. The number of meals you feed your pet varies according to its age. Here is the dietary routine you should follow while feeding your German Shepherd at different stages of its life: Below 2 Months While your German Shepherd puppy is younger than two months, you can free-feed it. At this age, you need not worry about the puppy getting obese by eating a lot of food. You can leave the food open for your puppy and have it eat at its convenience. Between 2 And 4 Months As your German Shepherd gets older, you can start feeding it more dry kibble and structure its diet. At this stage of its life, you can feed your pet around four to five meals every day. Between 4 And 6 Months As your puppy gets older, you can further reduce its diet to three meals per day. This is when you should start being mindful of the amount of food it consumes. Overeating at this age can lead to your German Shepherd getting overweight in no time. Over 6 Months Once your German Shepherd gets older than six months, you can start feeding it not more than two meals a day. You can always give it its favorite treats and snacks in between. Keep track of the amount of food your pet eats on a meal-to-meal basis to prevent obesity and other health complications. Major Health Problems For German Shepherds If you are looking for a German Shepherd in India, it is important to be aware of the health complications it can encounter in its lifespan. Get all details regarding potential allergies and health issues from the breeder before bringing your furry friend home. Here are some of the most common health problems encountered by German Shepherds: Hip Dysplasia Hip dysplasia is one of the most common heritable health issues faced by most dogs, including German Shepherds. Hip dysplasia leads to pain and lameness in your pet. Your German Shepherd may or may not exhibit clinical signs of the issue and can live a healthy life despite the complications. However, hip dysplasia increases the risk of arthritis in your pet as it gets older. Moreover, it is not advisable to breed German Shepherds with hip dysplasia further. This is one of the common problems that can be addressed in German Shepherd breeds, especially for larger dogs. The dogs start suffering from the malformation in the joint provided in the Hip region. It is a painful condition for them and it's quite difficult to get rid of. Elbow Dysplasia Elbow dysplasia is another heritable condition common in medium-to-large size dogs. Elbow dysplasia can be treated with surgery or medication. The progressive disease can make your German Shepherd forget where its hind legs are, making it difficult to walk. Gastric Dilation-volvulus This is a health complication wherein your German Shepherd suffers from a bloating condition. It is a life-threatening condition that is common in large and deep-chested breeds like German Shepherds. Gastric dilation-volvulus can occur when your pet eats a large meal, eats rapidly, drinks a lot of water, or starts exercising vigorously right after finishing its meal. The condition prevents your pet from getting rid of this air from its stomach by vomiting or belching, ultimately hampering the blood reaching its heart. In severe cases, its blood pressure drops and it goes into a shock. Common ways of identifying bloat are checking if your pet has a distended abdomen or if it starts retching and salivating excessively without vomiting. Under such circumstances, take it to a vet without any delay. The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. Training assistance will help you grow in experience and build a strong bond between you and your German Shepherd puppy, which is essential. Also, the GSD has a thirst for training and fulfillment. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. With their versatility and athleticism, you can try a lot of different activities when puppies finish growing and they are cleared for higher-impact things. A fully-grown German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs pounds. German Shepherds generally live for years on average. Corporal Duncan brought him back to the United States and Rin-Tin-Tin became one of the most famous dog actors in history. Featured German Shepherd Article.
On Feb. Stephanie and Greg Chabursky of Ottawa, Canada, welcomed the pooch into their home in , taking in the dog as a 6. Today, Bear is a bit bigger, over a year old, and a pivotal part of his pet parents' lives, so there was no question that the dog would be part of Stephanie and Greg's wedding. Bear was wearing his 'best dog' bandana and enjoyed everyone's company," Stephanie said. At the dinner, when the newlyweds decided to share their first dance, Bear decided that he should be part of the moment too. Anytime Greg and I hug at home, he jumps up on us, asking us to join our hug. This was no different during our first dance. He jumped up on Greg and asked to join us. Greg picked him up as per usual and put him right between us, and that's when Bear just cuddled in and enjoyed the dance," Stephanie said of the adorable moment. Understandably, millions of people loved watching our first dance with Bear as much as we did," the bride, a registered nurse at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, added. According to Stephanie, after his "calm and comfortable" first dance, Bear spent the rest of the wedding "being with all his closest friends," napping, dancing, and playing. Bear is set to be the ring bearer at this upcoming ceremony and "will most likely" join the couple's first dance again. Bear has plenty of his own to celebrate. The canine recently completed therapy dog training and will soon start visiting retirement homes, hospitals, universities, ambulance bays, fire stations, and more to soothe others and make them smile. And, when articles appear on their accomplishments, they turn into must-read events. The summary article also provided this comment: "People who see the Internet clip of Texas-born Carolyn Scott performing a song from "Grease" with her golden retriever Rookie are riveted to the screen. Thousands have sent her e-mails, many saying they cried with joy. After posting it to our site , Carolyn contacted us, later sending a video of her Grease performance. We had it rendered digitally, posted it to Youtube, and the rest is history as this clip continues to circulate the world, bringing joy to so many. There is a powerful message in the life-affirming joy and inner radiance that Carolyn and Rookie exude, as our film demonstrates the restorative miracles that can abound through the embodiment of the human-canine bond. However, it is important to understand that our documentary is NOT a story about canine freestyle. Rather, it is a courageous story of inner strength and survival, as Carolyn continues in a sense to dance for her life. Enduring her fears without relinquishing that important capacity to rejoice, she is buoyed by Rabbi Hillel's words, "I get up. I walk. I fall down. Meanwhile, I keep dancing. And, today, she suffers from the after effects of her initial polio and treatments, evidencing Post Polio Sequelae. This has resulted in Carolyn's no longer competing in the ring or providing freestyle workshops worldwide. Candidly told in Carolyn's own words, Gotta Dance is a frank, yet amazingly, inspiring tale. Poignant commentary is shared by esteemed veterinarians and authors, Dr. Allen Schoen, Dr. The film truly captures the journey of Carolyn Scott and her Golden Retriever Rookie, hand and paw together, moving from fear to freedom, and so inspiring the lives of all whom they have touched. It was an example of G-d's creation sharing love and companionship. I saw you on Good Morning America and, again, was brought to moist eyes at the incredible demonstration of love and dedication to each other. It all makes me love our animals even more! Rookie looks so happy. Watching the two of you just brings joyful tears to my eyes. Every time I watch it, I get tears in my eyes because I completely understand the bond that does exist between humans and their beloved animals. At that time, I was exposed to rehab, therapy, pet therapy, etc. Prior to the accident, I too used to love to dance. Due to the leg injury I sustained, I can't really dance any more. Perhaps this is why I find your routine SO moving! I found myself crying, but they were tears of pure joy! I grew up with a golden retriever and have very fond memories. The two of you warmed my heart. It's definitely pure gold. They produced a BIG effect that was way out of proportion to the cramped quarters. I even saw a couple of people in the audience wiping their eyes. That was nice; it made me feel less the idiot for sitting here sobbing over a tiny TV segment. The Westminster dogs were nice to look at and listen to, but Carolyn and Rookie were the highlight of the hour. I do wish it could have lasted a lot longer and gone into much more detail and demonstration. I guess I'm greedy when it comes to watching this team. While clearly applicable for canine freestylers, the intent is far more encompassing. The embodiment of The Bond, where the dance of human and canine is possible, is all about listening for the music, as we attempt to communicate and relate better together. That ability to truly dance with dogs is one we all strive for, and hopefully is aptly represented in this unique image. We presented Dr.

With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Recognizing the early signs of this progressive disease will help you get treatment for your dog so he has an active life filled with joy instead of pain or discomfort. An old Labrador Retriever is especially prone to developing this disease. Osteoarthritis, or Degenerative Joint Disease DJD , is a progressive inflammation of the joints caused by deterioration and breakdown in cartilage. Bloat is a serious condition that requires immediate emergency care. Dogs of all shapes and sizes can bloat, but some breeds are more susceptible than others. Unfortunately, Labradors are at the top of the list for susceptibility to this condition. The causes of bloat in Labs and other dogs are unknown, but there is likely a genetic element. A general rule of thumb suggests your Lab should be at or close to its full size by their first birthday. However, bigger-boned Lab puppies can keep growing and filling out their chest up to 18 months old. How big should a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever be? The average Lab weight at six months old is about 40 to 55 pounds for males or 30 to 35 pounds for females. Please keep in mind that these numbers are averages, and every puppy will grow at a slightly different rate. How much bigger will my Labrador Retriever get? There are three ways to predict the size of a Labrador Retriever at maturity: Age. Labrador Retrievers typically reach their full height and weight around their first birthday. Larger Labs may need up to 18 months to fill out their chest, but any weight gain after 12 months should be minimal overall. If your Lab is less than a year old, they are likely still growing and putting on muscle to reach their adult size. Paw Size. Your puppy will be growing very fast when you first bring them home. But that growth rate slows down quite quickly. So when do dogs stop growing for good? And how will you know when your puppy has reached their adult size? Labrador Puppy Growth Chart We have a fascinating and long running thread on our forum, where members enter the weights of their puppies at different ages. The Labrador growth chart below shows the data we have collected, in a Labrador weight chart by age. Labrador dog weight chart by age and breed Each dot represents a snapshot in time of an individual puppy. You can find his or her age in weeks along the bottom of the chart and his weight in pounds up the left hand side. You can see how all the dots taken together follow a pattern, but there is still a considerable range of puppy weights at each age. When Do Dogs Stop Growing? But what about a two year old Lab, or a one year old? Well, in broad terms, dogs stop growing sometime between one and two years old. But it varies between breeds. Most dogs are fully grown by their first birthday. In general small breeds reach their adult height several months before large breeds do. Yet dog size varies greatly among individuals, even within the same breed. Larger dogs are often slower to mature than little dogs, and carry on growing for longer. Small dogs are sometimes fully grown by the time they are 9 months old. Whereas giant breeds can take up to three years to reach full size. Adult size, temperament, and coat type are all likely to affect energy requirements, and affect the rate a puppy grows. In fact even breeds which end up similar in size can grow at very different rates. There is very little scientific research — but a lot of anecdotal evidence — about when Lab puppies stop growing. In , a UK study following 37 Lab puppies through to adulthood revealed that all of them had reached their adult weight by their first birthday. But more recently, a much larger lifestyle study of over 4, UK Labradors found that their weight continued to increase between one and four years old. When Do Labs Stop Growing? The Labrador puppy growth chart finishes when the dog reaches adulthood. General wisdom from breeders, vets, and experiences Labrador owners is that Labs stop growing during their second year. In fact, he will be quite close to his final adult Labrador height at around nine months of age. Does color change the Labrador puppy growth chart? When is a chocolate Lab full grown? Is it the same time that a full grown black Labrador or yellow Lab? So your average chocolate Lab will be adult sizes at the same time as the average yellow or black Lab. How Quickly Do Labradors Grow? Our Labrador puppy growth chart shows that all Labrador puppies follow the same breed specific pattern of growth spurts and slower growth, even though the actual numbers on the scale will vary from individual to individual. The most rapid period of growth will take place in the first month or so after you bring him home. In , a study of Labrador puppies in Norway found that Labrador weight gain is most rapid at 89 days old in females, and 95 days old in males. So around the week mark. And Labradors usually reach half of their adult weight by the time they are 18 or 19 weeks old. How much do Labs grow after 6 months? Another trend you can see in our Labrador puppy growth chart is that Lab puppies gain weight much less rapidly after their 6 month birthday. Once your Lab has hit this milestone you can expect them to gain a little height, and probably continue to fill out for up to a year or so. In other words, the point when you Lab stops getting any taller. It is estimated that in the UK the average height at the shoulders of a male Lab is cm taller than the breed standard. Will my dog still grow after being neutered? Whether or not dogs should be routinely spayed or neutered is a subject which divides opinion. Labrador owners deciding whether and when to neuter usually end up with a lot of questions, few of which have straightforward answers. Many veterinary care providers and shelters advocate neutering at a young age, or even make it a requirement of the adoption contract. A study found that neutering before 37 weeks old is linked to very slightly more rapid growth, and neutering after 37 weeks leads to very slightly slower growth. How big do Labrador Retrievers get? As we all know, very few dogs fit the mathematical average — they are much more likely to occupy a range of normal sizes. But most of us like a more precise answer than that before we commit to sharing our home with a puppy. So, how big do Labs get? Labradors are remarkably variable in height and weight. The biggest male Labs can be almost twice the size of the smallest female ones. But you want me to give you some numbers, so here are some averages. Many adult female Labradors reach a weight of lbs and stand inches high at the shoulder. This will be the same whether they are a female chocolate Lab or a female black Labrador. Many adult male Labradors reach a weight of lbs and stand inches at the shoulder. But remember, your dog is probably not an average dog! Can you always predict size with a Labrador puppy growth chart? These Labrador height and weight numbers are very broad guidelines, and they may give you a rough idea of how big a pup will grow. How big your Labrador will get depends partly on his parents. Assuming that your puppy had healthy not overweight parents, their own weights will give you an idea of how big your Lab is likely to grow. But there are always surprises in any group or family of dogs! Has your puppy stalled on the Labrador puppy growth chart? It is possible that your puppy will weigh less than the average examples. Labrador puppy weight and size can vary widely depending on a number of different factors, many of which are normal and harmless. American Labrador puppy growth Labrador puppies from working stock are often less heavy than those bred for the show ring or pet homes. Dogs bred for hunting and field trials tend to be faster and lighter in build because they are expected to be agile and quick when working in the field. Small parents Size is also partly genetic. In other words, if your puppy had small parents he might well be on the small size for his age, throughout his life. Again, this is only a general guide. Even puppies from the same litter can vary quite considerably in size when plotted on a Labrador puppy growth chart. How much should my Labrador puppy weigh? But this kind of rule of thumb is of limited use, and there are problems with judging whether or not a puppy is thriving by his weight alone. Because it is so difficult to know exactly what size your puppy will be as an adult, no-one can really say what he should weigh today, or any other day. It may however give you an indication if your puppy is seriously under or overweight. It is rare for puppies to have any kind of growth disorder. Or for their families to starve them by mistake! But it is also normal to worry a little if your puppy seems on the small side. Is my puppy is too fat or too thin? The very best guide to whether a puppy is the right weight for him, is how he looks and feels. Not where he falls on an average Labrador puppy growth chart. Physically examining and observing your puppy will help you decide if they are doing ok in this respect. Just like older Labradors, puppies should not be too heavy. Most experts nowadays like to see a waist on even quite young puppies. Does it matter if my puppy is a bit plump? We all used to think that puppy fat was a good thing. When I was a child fat puppies were the norm. Perhaps this extra layer of fat was helpful in sustaining the puppy during illness before vaccinations were widely available for dogs? Nowadays, the thinking is that puppies should be slim. With a defined waist, just like an older dog. It causes their bones to grow too rapidly as well. And this may result in painful skeletal abnormalities in later life. Chubby Lab puppies might be plotted higher than average on the Labrador puppy growth chart, but if they are a shorter stature they could be following the line. You need to assess your pup by how they look and feel. Weighing your puppy If your puppy has been ill and is very thin, or if he has become rather overweight , you might consider weighing him in order to monitor his progress on a Labrador puppy growth chart of your own. If you can see his ribs, or feel them very easily just beneath his skin, your Labrador puppy is too thin. If in doubt, check with your veterinarian. You can show them your Labrador puppy growth chart too, so they have a good idea of how they are progressing. My dog weighs 35lbs at six months old. Is that OK? I mentioned above that an average Labrador might weigh around 50lbs at six months old. But there is huge variation around this figure. To illustrate how much very healthy puppies may vary, there are 6 month old Labs on our forum weighing 30lbs, and others weighing 60lbs! These are very different points on the same Labrador puppy growth chart, but could both be healthy animals. And the truth is, no-one can tell you exactly what your six month old pup should weigh, or indeed your Labrador of any age. What age does a puppy turn into a dog? When does a puppy no longer belong on a Labrador puppy growth chart but instead have reached their adult size? And when will your puppy be a fully grown up dog? There are three aspects to changing from puppy to dog: physical maturity and mental maturity. Sexual maturity in puppies People are often surprised to discover that puppies become sexually mature before they are full grown. These sexually mature pups still belong on the Labrador puppy growth chart, and will gain weight and height. Most Labradors are physically capable of breeding while still puppies. Though of course they should not be allowed to do so. Many female Labradors come into season for the first time between at between six and nine months old. Though some will be over a year old. And most male Labradors are ready and willing to mate well before their first birthday! Mental maturity in puppies Not only is your Labrador physically still a puppy when he or she reaches sexual maturity. He is also very much a puppy mentally and emotionally. In fact, many experts do not consider a Labrador to be fully grown up and mature until they are around two years old. In practice, there is no exact age at which you can definitely say your puppy is a grown up. Some puppies mature mentally and physically quicker than others. As a broad guide, you will often hear people use 18 months as the divide between Labrador puppy and adult dog. When do dogs stop growing? Most Labradors will have completed much of their growth by their first birthday and will stop growing completely before their second. Beyond this point there is no need to plot their weight on a Labrador puppy growth chart, but instead they should just be monitored physically. Weights vary greatly among individuals of this breed and puppy weight unless very extreme, is not a great guide to health. Enjoy your puppy for what he is, large Labrador or small. Just remember to check with your vet if you think he is unwell or not growing as he should. Is your Labrador puppy still growing? Do you think the runt of the litter is going to surprise you by reaching the upper end of the scale? Were your predictions at X months completely confounded? Save to Pinterest The Stages of Puppy Growth and Development Month by Month The following are the stages of puppy growth and development, starting at birth and ending when your dog reaches adulthood. The Neonatal Stage 0 to 2 weeks This is the newborn puppy growth stage that lasts until two weeks of age. At this developmental stage, puppies are blind and deaf. Expect puppies at this point to sleep almost constantly and their mother will take care of everything, keeping them warm, feeding them, and keeping them clean. The Transitional Stage 2 to 4 weeks At this puppy growth stage , they will start to open up their eyes and respond to sounds, light, and movement around them. You will also notice a puppy at this point starting to get more mobile, although they will still tend to crawl instead of walking. They do, however, have enough strength to stand up, but will stumble a lot. A puppy in this developmental stage will just be starting to recognize their siblings and mother. Lab puppies open their eyes at about two weeks old. By this time, Labrador puppies will have their eyes fully open and most will be at least partly open. Ears open at this point too and your puppy will begin to hear. Period of Awakening of Senses 3 to 4 weeks At this period , a puppy develops various senses rapidly. They start to get fully alert and aware of their environment and may recognize you and other humans that are frequently around. The Socialization Period 4 to 7 Weeks Once a puppy is around four weeks old, they start to learn the most important things in life-related to social development. They will learn to not bite all the time and how to interact with their siblings. Interactions with humans are especially important between five and seven weeks. This is also the time they will start to understand discipline thanks to their mother. She will start weaning her puppies and teaching them manners, like acknowledging she is in charge. As the owner, you can start introducing food to your puppy when they are around four weeks old. Start small and begin to give them more food as the mother continues to wean them. You should also continue handling the puppy every day. However, be sure not to separate them from their siblings or mother for over ten minutes each day, since this can lead to issues with training and socialization. Dogs who are separated too soon may also be nervous and more likely to bark and bite. During this period, let the mother dog take care of discipline; you should not correct the dog for mouthing or housebreaking mistakes until later in life. To help ease them through this process, avoid traumatic events, loud voices, or harsh discipline. You should also make sure your pooch has plenty of human contact during this stage. If you want, you can start leash training and even teach simple commands such as sit, down, stay and come. In terms of development, you will notice that your puppy can sleep through the whole night and starts to develop better control of its bowels and bladder. Most vets suggest that new outings should wait until they are fully vaccinated. We rub the Calmeroos Puppy Toy on littermates and mom to get their scent. When we get home the Calmeroos Puppy Toy helps our puppy feel comfortable and adjust more quickly to his new environment. Many puppies will go to their new homes at around 8 weeks old. We recently put together a blog post on our sister site detailing what you can expect from an 8-week-old puppy. The Juvenile Stage 3 to 4 Months At this point in development, a puppy can be compared to a juvenile. They will be more independent and may ignore the basic commands that they know very well. If this happens, firmly and gently reinforce the commands and other training. You may also notice your pup starting to test your authority by play biting or similar actions. You can also redirect your dog to a toy that they can bite. Either can end up teaching your pooch that it is okay to fight with you and challenge your authority. The Ranking Period 3 to 6 Months When your puppy is between four and six months old, you should expect them to be somewhat bratty, showing more willfulness and independence. They are more likely to test your limits and may try to show dominance over children or other family members. If they fail to listen to you or come when called, it can be dangerous as it puts them at risk of injury when in public. It can also hurt future responses to you, making them less likely to listen. This is also when your dog will be teething, so give them toys like frozen dog Kong toys to relieve pressure and pain. Chewing behaviors will also start growing at this point so look for some safe chew toys to keep your dog entertained. This is when hormonal changes start to occur and is the ideal time to spay or neuter your pup. UC Davis published a study comparing the long-term health effects of neutering in Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. Adolescence 6 to 18 Months After six months, your pup is already in the final stage of puppy development but is still young. This is a fun and exciting time for your pooch since they will be learning, full of energy, and exuberant. During this time, it is important to remember that even if your puppy now looks like a grown-up dog, they are still a puppy, at least in its mental capacity and emotional maturity. Work to slowly increase training and other activities. You can even work on advanced training such as agility or herding. Another option is to simply keep training them to ensure they interact in a non-aggressive and non-threatening way with other animals. It is also possible that your dog will go through another fearful period of time at some point after they reach six months. You can speed up the process with counter-conditioning and desensitization. It fits very well and is quite apt! Final Thoughts With the knowledge of how and when your new puppy will develop, you are better able to meet their needs. Provide socialization at the appropriate times and be sure to give your puppy plenty of social interactions with their siblings as well as humans and any other pets in your home. Your dog should reach maturity at some point between one and two years old with plenty of variation based on breed, Labradors are considered mature at between 2 and 2. The Australian Labradoodle is different from all other labradoodles In the mids, The Australian Guide Dog Association received an inquiry from a blind lady requesting a guide dog that would not cause her allergies to flare. To achieve a hypoallergenic dog they needed to breed their proven Labradors to a dog that was already non-shedding, hence the Standard Poodle. The resulting Labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition without ever having to go back to the parent breed of the Labrador or Poodle. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. We have also produced many therapy and service dogs in Atlanta and the surrounding areas. Our puppies are birthed in our home and raised in our acre farm in the suburbs of Atlanta. One look and an instant calm will probably wash over you. Stress simply melts away. Because Golden Retrievers are notoriously loyal and obedient. They can look silly with their big goofy grins. Or they can look stoic and wise beyond their years with their striking, deep brown eyes. CutenessOverload Everything they do is adorable Just watching your pup go from an adorable average of 10 pounds right when you get them at 8 weeks old to a sizable 70 pounds at the year mark is cuter than anything you can imagine. Or falling asleep in your lap. Or busting your pup discreetly chewing on your brand new pair of sneakers in their new closet lair is the cutest. There are too many cute things! Everything will be adorable and glee-inducing if done by a Golden Retriever pup — even the behaviors that, by all logic, should annoy you to no end. This is a good thing because a puppy this adorable is definitely going to be a popular one. Golden Retriever puppies make friends with kids , adults, and other animals while keeping their trademark smiles on their faces. They are so friendly, in fact, that they may not be the best bet when looking for guard dogs. A Golden will usually greet any stranger, including during a break-in, with a welcoming smile on their face. But they will love you best Again, the loyalty of a Golden Retriever pup cannot be stressed enough; it is strong. At the end of the day, your athletic, big-pawed, adventurous, silly, and loving Golden pup will only have eyes for you. Remember, you can find just about any breed of dog you are looking for at a shelter or rescue. Christina Donnelly is a small animal expert focusing on dogs and writer with over 12 years of experience in animal welfare. In fact, golden retrievers have snagged the third spot for most popular dogs in the United States for the last several years! These pooches are on the larger side females range between 55 and 70 pounds, while males weigh in between 65 and 75 pounds and require lots of exercise, which may make some families shy away. But don't let their size—or high energy—deter you. Golden retrievers are highly intelligent, easy to train compared to other breeds of dogs , and incredibly friendly. Whether you're already a golden puppy parent or considering adding one to the family, read on to learn some fun facts and see some seriously cute photos! One even surmises that goldens are descendants of Russian circus dogs! These alternate theories were debunked, however, when the personal records of Lord Tweedmouth of Inverness, Scotland were made public. Lord Tweedmouth was an avid waterfowl hunter who wanted to breed a dog with some serious bird retrieving skills. So, in , he bred a yellow retriever named Nous with a liver-colored Tweed Water Spaniel named Belle. The result? A pack of puppies with the exact hunting skills he was looking for, which he dubbed golden retrievers. Golden retrievers were later brought to North America—sometime during the s—where they became hugely popular for their beautiful looks and sweet personalities. Then, in , they were officially recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club. Continue to 2 of 9 below. They can range from a very light, snowy white, to a yellow-gold, to a dark, coppery red. No matter the color of their coat, however, it's important to never cut your golden retriever's hair—doing so can put her at risk of skin cancer, among other health issues. Their coats are made up of two layers—the long, silky, waterproof outercoat and soft, warming undercoat—and act as insulators against all types of weather. So, if you think to trim your golden's coat in the summer to keep it cool, think again! It'll be much cooler and its skin will be protected from the sun with its coat intact. Continue to 3 of 9 below. Bred to fetch waterfowl, golden retrievers love a good swim session but would be just as happy with long walks, games of fetch, or even agility games. Aim for about one hour of exercise each day, but keep your dog's age and activity levels in mind—you may have to adjust accordingly. Continue to 4 of 9 below. If taken to a rescue site, for example, they can quickly learn how to perform search and rescues to help those in need. In addition to their smarts, golden retrievers' downright sweet demeanors make them the perfect pick for therapy dogs. They can bring a lot of comforts—and joy—to people who have experienced traumatic events, are living in hospitals, or are stressed out during college exams. Continue to 5 of 9 below. Their love of food can cause health problems like obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease , so it's important to feed your golden the right amount of food for her weight, age, and activity level. Not sure how much is right for your dog? Talk to your vet about a healthy diet. And take it easy on the treats! It's true that goldens love to eat, but they like to carry non-food items in their mouths, too. Their mouthy nature makes everyday stuff such as sticks, shoes, or even the remote control a highly prized possession. Because golden retrievers have very gentle mouths, challenges such as the golden retriever egg challenge—in which a golden is tasked with holding an uncooked egg in its mouth without breaking it—have popped up all over the web. Continue to 6 of 9 below. Tons of major movies, such as the "Air Bud" series, "Homeward Bound," "A Dog's Purpose," and even thrillers such as "Poltergeist" and "Friday the 13th" have goldens in the credit roll. What's more? There are a few golden retrievers in presidential history, too. Presidents Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford had goldens during their presidencies. Golden retrievers are often considered the all-American dogs, so it makes sense, right? Continue to 7 of 9 below. Todd, the sweet golden pictured here, is one of those puppy heroes. During their hike, Paula nearly stepped on a rattlesnake—and when the snake lunged at her, Todd jumped in front of her to protect her. Although Todd was bitten on the nose and had severe swelling in his face, he's expected to make a full recovery. Because of his heroic deed, the internet has hailed Todd as a very, very good boy. And believe it or not, Todd has found a way to be an even better boy: He has a GoFundMe page to help other heroic doggies who have suffered from the same injuries. Continue to 8 of 9 below. Even in their senior years, it's not uncommon for older goldens to keep up with their puppy counterparts. Continue to 9 of 9 below. And for good reason! Not only are they adorable, but they prove goldens are some of the sweetest puppers around, too. I've photographed many families along with their beloved dog, often a Golden. I've had numerous Golden Retrievers in my training classes over the years, whether they be reds, English Cremes or the beautiful blonde that we so typically think of when we think of a Golden Retriever. Goldens hail from Scotland originally and are known as a hard-working breed, often employed as service animals and therapy dogs. They're also known for their voracious appetites, young-at-heart personalities and their penchant for carrying things in their mouths particularly when excited. Goldens are intelligent, athletic dogs, and are exceptional competitors in dog sports like obedience, agility, dock diving and more. Golden Retrievers gorgeous coats and perennially smiling face make them a dream to photograph, especially during their little butterball puppy stage. Doggy Daddy: Tucker I was recently contacted by the Creed family to take their family portraits and they requested that I take a few pet portraits of their very special family member, Tucker. It was only later when Moana's mom shared her Christmas mini session photo of Moana with them see below , that the Creeds asked if those were taken by Penny Whistle Photography. Brenda contacted me afterward to say "You just photographed Moana's daddy". Small world indeed and now I know where Moana gets her good looks! Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. labrador retriever puppies for sale indianapolis - Redirect Your Puppy to Appropriate Options If you find your puppy using their teeth on something inappropriate, such as the leg of a chair or your foot, redirect them to something that they are allowed to chew. They persistently want to nip your hands and clothes no matter what amazing stuff you show them. Or they keep going back to chomp the same corner of the coffee table despite your attempts to distract them with something else. This is where having good puppy management strategies comes into play. Puppy management refers to changing the environment to make unwanted behavior unlikely or impossible. This might mean putting your puppy in a playpen where they can only put their teeth on approved toys and chews. Perhaps you can put your puppy behind a baby gate so your pant leg is safe from their sharp little teeth. Puppy management is simple, yet critical to surviving a teething Golden Retriever puppy. Giving a teething puppy too much freedom is a recipe for disaster, so utilize puppy management whenever you need to. Your home and sanity will thank you! Remove Yourself From the Situation Playing with a teething puppy can be tricky. They want to interact with you, but their mouths are sore and painful, and it can be hard for them to not nip or chomp on your skin, clothes or hair. You can try walking away, though some puppies will get up and follow you so they can chomp you some more. Going onto the other side of a baby gate is a great way to show the puppy that they lose access to you if they get mouthy. If your puppy is tethered by their leash to something heavy, you can also get up and walk away if the biting gets to be too much. The tether keeps them from following their human chew toy. Remember that nipping and chewing are normal parts of puppy development. Punishing a puppy can sometimes make the biting even more intense, and it can also damage the trust between you and your puppy. This process is known as teething. The exact age at which a Golden Retriever starts teething can vary from one dog to another. On average, a Golden Retriever will begin to lose their baby teeth at around 6 months of age, as their adult teeth grow in. Some Goldens, however, can start losing their puppy teeth also called deciduous or milk teeth as early as 4 months of age or as late as 7 or even 8 months of age. What are the signs of teething? Where do the baby teeth go? How long does it take to grow new teeth? When do Golden Retriever puppies stop chewing on everything? This article may contain affiliate links and loyalgoldens may earn a commission if a purchase is made. Unlock your goldens natural intelligence and see just how quickly problem behaviors disappear. This is the best at home dog training I've ever used! Golden Retrievers have a well-known behavior of chewing almost anything and everything they come across. As a result, they are known as natural-born chewers. While chewing is a common habit in most dogs, Golden Retrievers chew more than the average dog breed. You may have already caught your puppy tearing away at your slippers or shoes, right? So why do these pups chew so much? It is a way of exploring the world testing new things out of curiosity. Dogs belong to the Canidae family that heavily rely on their teeth for tearing and chewing flesh. Adult Goldens chew a lot when they are bored or as a way of relieving excess energy and anxiety. Your Golden Retriever will insist on chewing on things throughout his entire life. Fortunately, as your Golden gets older you can direct that chewing behavior to only appropriate items like tennis balls and chew toys. What that means is that chewing is not solely part of the teething stage. This action is more of a habit. It could also be genetic, seeing as how Goldens were originally bred to be retrievers; hence they need to learn how to control their bite force in order to retrieve game without damaging it. One of the ways they do this is by chewing. So here are a few ideas on how to stop your Golden Retriever from chewing on anything harmful or inappropriate: Shouting: Shout at your pup when you catch him chewing the wrong object like slippers or shoes. Clapping your hands is another way to distract the pup from the bad behavior. Using a commanding voice: You can use firm commands to train your Golden Retriever to stop chewing on the wrong things. Your dog will notice the tone of your voice and immediately stop what they were chewing. Switching: Instead of just stopping your dog from chewing on the wrong things, introduce chew toys. They need to understand that these items are what they can freely chew on. For more effective training, give your Golden Retriever something appropriate to chew on when you take away something inappropriate. Exercise: Your Golden Retriever may be chewing things out of boredom and pent-up energy. You may also exercise him or run around in the yard to help him burn that excess energy. Remember, Golden Retrievers love to exercise and participate in outdoor fun activities. See this Golden Retriever puppy loose one of his baby teeth. Symptoms of Puppy Teething and How To Deal With It Now that you know your Golden Retriever will start losing his teeth between the ages of four and 8 months, you might be asking yourself about the signs of teething and what to do once you notice these signs. Here are some of the most common symptoms of teething: Loss of appetite: One common sign of teething across most Golden Retrievers is a loss of appetite. This should not worry you. Dry food is good for the development of strong gums and teeth. Swollen gums: Another indicator of a teething puppy is swollen gums. Gum bleeding: When your Golden Retriever is teething, you may notice blood on his toys and other chewing objects. This is a result of bleeding gums which is a normal occurrence during teething. So what do you do when you see these signs? First, rest assured that all these are normal happenings. It means your Golden Retriever puppy is growing just as he should. Consider toys with a lot of ridges and nubs on them. Have a variety of both soft and hard toys. Frozen objects and cow hooves are other good recommendations for chewing in pups during teething. Some people also give them to adult dogs. You may also put knots in a few clean washcloths and put them into the freezer. Once frozen, throw them to your Golden and watch as he chews. Discover how to train your Golden Retriever by playing games : 21 games to play with your Golden that will make them smarter and better behaved! A chew toy like the one pictured above Amazon is an excellent way to help your Golden with his painful teething issues. The nubs on the toy relieve the uncomfortable feeling in his teeth, and you can even freeze the toy to help with the pain of swollen gums. To lessen the teething pain further, you can try placing a few small pieces of ice cubes in his mouth. Not only can this help to ease the pain, it will prepare him for when you begin brushing his teeth later on. At some point you may notice some gaps in your Goldens mouth and realize that some of his baby teeth are missing. As a general rule, teething Golden Retrievers often lose their baby teeth while eating or chewing, causing them to swallow the teeth instead of them falling out onto the ground. A Golden Retriever swallowing their lost puppy teeth is no cause for alarm, as the baby teeth will harmlessly pass through their system. Your Golden Retriever will obviously not talk to let you know it has lost, or chewed and swallowed, a puppy tooth. Most dogs, Golden Retrievers included, will lose their baby teeth as they eat and swallow them together with food. Some may lose them during object or toy-chewing. Another thing to note about teething is that pups lose their baby teeth systematically. This starts with the incisors, then canine, also called fangs, and finally premolars. However, this is not a hard and fast rule when it comes to tooth loss. Molars come in with the new set of adult teeth. All dog breeds, including Golden Retrievers, will start developing baby teeth at weeks. A full set of 28 baby deciduous teeth will finally occur at around the sixth week. On average your Golden Retriever will have baby teeth for six months, then shed them for a new set of adult teeth. Adult teeth come in almost immediately after losing the baby teeth. Baby teeth come out as a result of pushing by the adult teeth coming in. The gaps are filled in very quickly by the adult teeth. In the end, your Golden Retriever will have 42 permanent teeth in his mouth, including molars. In some cases, you may notice a baby tooth that has refused to budge even after an adult tooth has fully grown behind it. If this happens, take your Golden Retriever to a vet for diagnosis. In general, a Golden Retriever puppy will want to chew on everything until they are through the teething phase at between 6 to 8 months of age. At this point, the chewing will lessen, but Golden Retrievers will continue to chew throughout their lives. By then they will have learned to only chew on appropriate items. Your Golden Retriever will lose his baby teeth between the age of 4 and 6 months, as his adult teeth are pushing through the gums. Sharp Puppy Teeth Puppies are known to have sharp, pointy baby teeth that can wreak havoc on not just your shoes but your hands, arms, and fingers too. Sharp teeth are important because their jaws are still weak. Puppy Socialization Puppies are initially unaware of how sharp their teeth are and how hard their bite can be. After that, your puppy will start learning how hard their bite can be, as their playmates will squeal and withdraw when bitten too hard. This helps your puppy understand that they need to be less rough with their biting when playing. Puppy Teething Teething is a process that starts when puppies are around two weeks old when the first baby teeth begin to come in. The process usually ends when all the adult teeth erupt around eight months. How to Survive Puppy Teething Offer plenty of safe chew toys. If not, they will find other things to bite, such as furniture. Appropriate chewing has several benefits: Helps relieve the pain and discomfort of teething Supports a healthy mental state by releasing important neurotransmitters Provides mental stimulation which is especially important with puppy energy Strengthens jaw muscles Here are some guidelines for choosing the correct chew toys: Find toys that are soft and flexible and bend easily. Choose long toys , so your precious fingers are far away from those razor-sharp puppy teeth especially if children are playing with the puppy. Long-lasting chews, such as a bully or collagen stick , should be encouraged. It is directly linked to their overall health. Therefore, start introducing them to dental care from a young age so they are comfortable with the process. This will get your puppy used to having her mouth felt and make it easier for you to brush her teeth and maintain a dental care regimen. Brush their teeth with dog toothpaste. I use this toothbrush and toothpaste by Bow Wow Labs. Bully sticks and collagen sticks are other healthy options for your dog that aids teeth cleaning, deliver nutrients, and keep them occupied by satisfying their urge to chew. I would highly recommend using a Bow Wow Buddy with bully and collagen sticks to prevent your dog from swallowing the last end of the stick, which can cause choking or intestinal blockage. Premolars, located in the back of the mouth, come in. Since teething can hurt, you may notice symptoms in your Golden Retriever while they are experiencing this stage. The first symptom is usually a loss of appetite because chewing is painful for them. They seem to chew everything in sight! Doing this helps relieve their pain. Having a mix of soft and hard toys for your dog to chew on can help their gums feel better during teething. Toys with ridges and nubs can help massage the gums that are irritated, itchy, and painful. Frozen toys are also great options. The cold will help relieve the pain as your puppy chews. Even ice cubes can be a welcome chew treat during teething. Remember that this is a natural process for them, and they are trying to find relief. By providing a variety of toys and redirecting them when they start to chew other things, you can keep them occupied and entertained. Since the baby tooth is so close to the adult tooth, it creates a small space for bacteria to start growing. This can lead to a nasty infection , and the tooth would have to be removed, anyway. A surgical dental procedure will be performed to extract the tooth, and the hole in the gum line may be stitched up with dissolvable sutures. This will keep any food or debris out of it. Image Credit: Krakenimages. Usually, baby teeth fall out while a dog is chewing something. If the teeth fall out while a dog is eating, they may then swallow the teeth without even realizing it. You may come across a lone baby dog tooth on your floor sometimes, but the teeth are typically swallowed and you may never see them at all. This is nothing to worry about. The teeth will eventually pass right through their digestive systems without causing any damage. Golden Retrievers lose their baby teeth between 3 and 4 months old, and the teething process begins. It will last until the dog is around 7 months old. If you notice that your dog has remaining baby teeth after their adult teeth have completely grown in, take them to see your vet for an assessment. The baby teeth may have to be surgically removed to prevent infections and dental issues down the road. Featured Image Credit: jiayun, Shutterstock Contents. Premolars, which are found in the back of the mouth, emerge. However, it may also be a difficult period for both puppies and their owners since it frequently brings with it a variety of common problems and worries. Excessive chewing Chewing is a natural habit in dogs, but teething can send that instinct into overdrive. Chewing can be a self-soothing action for teething puppies but can also endanger your belongings. Drooling Is a common problem that occurs during the development of puppy teeth. This is because teething can cause discomfort and irritation in the gums and teeth, resulting in increased saliva production and drooling. Drooling is a common and transitory side effect of teething; most puppies outgrow it when their adult teeth emerge. Discomfort Teething can be a painful and complicated procedure for puppies. Therefore discomfort is a common problem during puppy teeth development. Teething can be difficult for puppies and their owners, but there are ways to help your pet! Give your puppy appropriate chew toys , soft or moist foods, and a cold compress to relieve painful gums. Remember to shower them with love and care during this stressful period. You and your pet can work together to get through teething and emerge with healthy, happy adult teeth! It can be stressful for your dog, so ensuring they have a good and balanced diet is essential to their growth, immune system, and dental health. In addition, puppies require a lot of protein, calcium, and other nutrients to create strong bones and teeth. That is why it is essential to provide them with high-quality, nutrient-rich puppy food that fits their nutritional needs. If your dog struggles, try feeding them softer, wet foods and smaller meals more frequently. You can help set your puppy up for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums by providing the proper nourishment and care during teething. Ensure to provide them with love and attention throughout this time as well! Feeding your golden retriever the right foods and treats is crucial for preserving oral health and supporting good tooth development. Yummy wet food: Wet food is a tasty option for dogs with a softer texture or difficulty chewing dry kibble. Search for high-quality products that are manufactured with natural ingredients and are designed specifically for pups. Raw bones: For puppies who enjoy chewing, raw bones can be a fun and healthful treat! They can help promote strong teeth and gums and are also a good source of nutrition. Tasty Dental Chews: These delicious treats promote good tooth care and fresh breath. Just break them into small pieces and keep an eye on your pup as they munch. Remember to brush your teeth regularly and schedule frequent dental check-ups with your veterinarian! Golden retrievers are a popular breed known for their extroverted and friendly personalities. They are devoted and intelligent and make excellent family pets. They are, nevertheless, prone to dental problems, just like any other breed, if their teeth and gums are not correctly cared for. Dental problems in Golden Retrievers can cause many issues, including poor breath, gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease in dogs, is caused by bacteria in the mouth forming a sticky film called plaque. If plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar, which can cause gum irritation and infection, leading to gingivitis and periodontal disease. Dogs, like humans, can suffer from dental problems that cause discomfort and pain. Fortunately, there are solutions to avoid or manage these problems! Tartar buildup, gingivitis, and periodontal disease are common dental issues in dogs and can result in poor breath, tooth damage, and even tooth loss. Daily tooth brushing, regular vet check-ups, proper dental chews and toys, and eating healthy food are all part of maintaining good dental hygiene in dogs. Your veterinarian may offer treatments such as professional teeth cleaning, dental surgery, or medication to handle the problem. Is This Due To Genetics? Poor dental hygiene, sugary or carb diets and specific health conditions can all lead to dental issues in dogs. In addition, certain breeds, such as those with crowded teeth or a higher risk of certain dental conditions, may be more prone to dental difficulties due to genetics. Here are several ways to do it: Teeth Brushing Dogs, like humans, require regular dental hygiene. Brush their teeth once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste designed exclusively for dogs. Search for solutions that promote dental health and aid in removing plaque and tartar. For example, sugary and starchy foods can contribute to plaque and tartar development. Therefore a well-balanced diet rich in high-quality protein and healthy fats is recommended. You can help your dog have healthy teeth and gums by being aware of the most common dental problems in dogs and taking steps to prevent or manage them. Regular dental checkups, daily tooth brushing, and the provision of appropriate dental chews and toys are all essential components of good oral hygiene in dogs. If their teeth and gums are not properly cared for, both male and female Golden Retrievers are equally vulnerable to dental problems. The good news is that regular dental care, daily tooth brushing, regular dental check-ups with your veterinarian, and providing proper dental chews and toys can help prevent or treat dental problems. If you own a golden retriever , you may wonder if teething affects their appetite or weight. Yes, that is doable. However, when a puppy is teething, it could experience pain and discomfort in its mouth, making them less interested in food. This could result in a decrease in their appetite and weight loss. Your golden retriever may experience discomfort as their new teeth develop during teething, which can trigger changes in its biting behaviour. To alleviate the pain, they may chew on objects more frequently or avoid specific types of food that are difficult to chew.
