Too often, unsuspecting people buy puppies from puppy mills, or sometimes neighbors who breed their dog to make a little money or simply because they have a dog "with papers. A German Shepherd Dog who has genetic health problems due to poor breeding practices or who develops significant behavior problems due to a lack of early socialization can cost thousands of dollars to treat—and result in grief and heartache as well. The last place on earth that I would look for a German Shepherd Puppy is in a pet store. Any breeder that is forced to sell his puppies to a pet store has no credibility. This only indicates he has no reputation as a breeder and nowhere else to sell his dogs. The majority of the dogs that end up in pet stores come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are a legitimate despicable business in many states and countries. You are definitely at the right site to begin with. Always do your Homework! Update 11th November: Ricki is now in a new home in Spain. Here he is in his new home. He has become very attached to the lady in the house but is taking his time with the partner. Update 27th September: We believe we have now found a new home for Ricki although he can't come over to the UK until February .His potential new owners are planning to visit Ricki in Malaga in October. More updates and photos as we get them. This is about Ricki the German Shepherd who has been kept all his life, 6 long years in a cage attached to a mule shed. He's never had a walk. He seems healthy but has only 8 x 6 feet space and goes round in circles. He probably has worms. His cage is full of poo and he gets left water and dry biscuits once a month or so in big buckets. Rats keep him barking at night. He is guarding nothing. The old local peasant who chucks in the biscuits never even talks to the dog said his nephew who owns him moved away and doesn't want him. He has left the cage unlocked for anyone to take him. Ricki is very gentle. It is hoped that Ricki will be freed before the end of May. There is a lady in Spain who has agreed to take him and get him prepared for adoption, either in Spain or England. The rescue have agreed to take him here in the UK so we need to raise the money to help pay for his care for the next 6 months whilst he gets the relevant vaccinations to enable him to come to the UK without being put into quarantine - we couldn't subject him to another 6 months of imprisonment. Please help us get Ricki to the UK and give him a few decent years to try and make up for the misery he has endured for the last 6 years. This was before Where is Ricki now? He is OK but will be assessed by a vet. We will continue to bring you updates as we hear more news. Update 1st July Ricki is settled in a foster home in Spain where he has made good friends with another dog, they chase each other around and have great fun. He never goes away from the house and loves the car and will jump straight in the boot when it's opened. He looks a bit patchy because he is losing his thick winter coat now. Ricki has received his heart worm tablet and we hope soon that he can begin his vaccination program to get him back over to the UK. Update 15th July Ricky has now been microchipped, had his rabies jab and now has a passport which means he should be OK to travel to the UK in February. He is very healthy, getting fitter and has lost a bit of weight because of all the exercise he is getting. He loves cats and the car. What a welcome sight - an empty cage! Thankfully this cage is now just full of empty crates. Sorry but we have had to edit the photos slightly to protect his rescuers and ensure the safety of Ricki in his new environment. Free at Last What a handsome laddie - lets hope he can be helped to forget his dreadful past. Ricki and friends - you can't beat a good scratch. Ricki and Sacha This horse poo tastes yummy!! Willy is titled to the IGP 2 level, has received the V excellent show rated and has the highest hip and elbow certification awarded. Willy is a powerhouse with elegant proportions. He is a mountain of energy and brings all his high drives to his work SOLD DOB: July 12, Hans is the spirited pup who has a perpetual smile on his face, sneaks in for a love and licks your face. He is absolutely fearless, loves everyone and going everywhere with you. He is an outgoing puppy full of expression. His coloring and markings are similar to his mother, Iduna. He has good balanced drives. He will make a great family companion and has the potential to be a competitive working dog. Curious and uninhibited with a touch of sweet. Harl has eyes that will melt your heart and see into your soul. He is sweet, sensitive and intuitive. Having a rough day? He'll lean in and curl up with you for a good snuggle to make the world a better place. In my opinion, he is the complete package of bloodlines, genetics, structure, temperament, conformation and pigment. From a young age, we've watch him develop, grow exhibit the natural drives we desire in our GSD's. He loves to play, exhibiting a strong prey drive with the flirt pole. He also has a great off switch. To date, he has no interest in the broom, mop or vacuum! I appreciate his analytically approach to life. He sits back and comfortably takes in new situations, absorbing the environment before diving it. Harl shows this same level of thought and intention in his obedience training. Harl loves to play with our adult dogs, socializing with his mom, dad and our "surrogate" grandma's. He naturally poses in his "show stance", has good bone, a deep chest, sound structure and shows free flowing movement with good reach. We are excited to see Harl reach his full potential with his fur-ever family and the social and obedience foundation we have instilled. All puppies have completed their veterinary wellness exam and are current on vaccinations and deworming. We are currently working on puppy culture exercises, socialization activities, problem solving activities and drive building exercises. But, did you know that they are so special that they even have their own club? Grief, a white shepherd, was one of the dogs he often used to perfect his idea of the best working dog, according to the White German Shepherd Annual, submitted by Aimee Harder. Since Grief was white and Horand was related to him, Horand carried the white gene. Horand went on to sire white puppies, as well as colored pups with the white recessive gene. Max von Stephanitz was the first president. Horand was the first entry in the new SV stud book and one of the foundation dogs of the German Shepherd breed. Yes, white German shepherds are pure bred German shepherds. This gene masks or hides the real color pattern of the dog. A white German shepherd can be any color and pattern found in the breed including black, black and tan, black and red, black and silver, black and cream, blue, liver, sable, saddled and bi-colored. The white gene only masks or hides the coat color, it does not cause health problems or damage the genetic make-up of a dog, unless there are health problems already in the line-then it does nothing to protect a dog from bad genetics. White German shepherds are often confused with the gorgeous Swiss shepherd or thought to be mixed with another white breed to create their white coat, which is not true. How do we Get White German Shepherds? When breeding colored German shepherds, the only way the white recessive gene can be seen in puppies is if both parents carry it. However, they will carry the white gene. If the offspring are bred to a white German shepherd, some may have a white coat. White German shepherds bred to white German shepherds will always produce white offspring. White German shepherds are not albino shepherds. They have black noses and dark eyes and may have dark nails, paw pads, and darkness around their mouths while albinos lack all pigment. Especially a human being who is congenitally deficient in pigment and usually has a milky or translucent skin, white or colorless hair, and eyes with pink or blue iris and deep-red pupil. Yes, the white German shepherd may be registered with the American Kennel Club as long as both parents are registered. However, this disqualification only pertains to AKC conformation competition. The white German shepherd can still participate in AKC performance events, such as obedience trials, tracking trials, temperament tests, herding events, and any events sponsored by AKC for German Shepherd Dogs. Strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified. The breed standard is the same for white or colored German shepherds. Their temperament is also no different than any other German shepherd and they come in all personality types. They are just as trainable as any other German shepherd and can excel as working dogs, in sports, competition, and make great family pets. They are equally active, intelligent, loving, protective, and companionable as any of their colored counterparts. It is well balanced, with harmonious development of the forequarter and hindquarter. The dog is longer than tall, deep-bodied, and presents an outline of smooth curves rather than angles. It looks substantial and not spindly, giving the impression, both at rest and in motion, of muscular fitness and nimbleness without any look of clumsiness or soft living. The ideal dog is stamped with a look of quality and nobility — difficult to define, but unmistakable when present. Secondary sex characteristics are strongly marked, and every animal gives a definite impression of masculinity or femininity, according to its sex. It lacks the physical deformities bred into western show lines of German Shepherds and has become one of Russia's most popular dog types. It was developed in the s and s to correct behavioural and conformational issues that have been bred into modern German Shepherds, and was bred for its large size, length of back, temperament and soundness of hips. White-coated German Shepherds were once banned from registration in their native Germany, but in the United States and Canada the coloration gained a following and a breed club was formed specifically for white German Shepherds, calling their variety the White Shepherd. The variety is recognised as a separate breed by the United Kennel Club. It descends from the American White Shepherds; the first stud dog of what was to become the breed was an American dog born in and imported to Switzerland. They are especially well known for their police work, being used for tracking criminals, patrolling troubled areas and detection and holding of suspects. Additionally, thousands of German Shepherds have been used by the military. These military working dogs MWD are usually trained for scout duty, and they are used to warn soldiers to the presence of enemies or of booby traps or other hazards. They were used in World War II as messenger dogs, rescue dogs and personal guard dogs. These include search and rescue, cadaver searching , narcotics detection, explosives detection , accelerant detection and mine detection dog, among others. They are suited for these lines of work because of their keen sense of smell and their ability to work regardless of distractions. When formal guide dog training began in Switzerland in the s under the leadership of Dorothy Eustis , all of the dogs trained were German Shepherd females. These results suggested that Labrador Retrievers were more suited to guide dog work while German Shepherds were more suited to police work. They are expected to patrol the boundaries to keep sheep from trespassing and damaging the crops. In Germany and other places these skills are tested in utility dog trials also known as Herdengebrauchshund HGH herding utility dog trials. He is regarded to be the dog who has captured the most drugs in Mexican police and military history. You may improve this section , discuss the issue on the talk page , or create a new section, as appropriate. By this number had grown to over .Returning soldiers spoke highly of the breed and animal actors Rin Tin Tin and Strongheart popularised the breed further. Her offspring had defects as the result of poor breeding, which caused the breed to decline in popularity during the late s. As of [update] , the German Shepherd is the second most popular breed in the US. Degenerative myelopathy , a neurological disease, occurs with enough regularity specifically in the breed to suggest that the breed is predisposed to it. A very inexpensive DNA saliva test is now available to screen for degenerative myelopathy. The test screens for the mutated gene that has been seen in dogs with degenerative myelopathy. The test is only recommended for predisposed breeds, but can be performed on DNA samples from any dog, collected through swabbing the inside of the animal's cheek with a sterile cotton swab. Prospective German Shepherd buyers can now request the test from the breeder or buy from a breeder who is known to test their dogs. Skeletal health and supplementation[ edit ] Musculoskeletal disorders are debilitating conditions that are often associated with genetic makeup, malnutrition, and stress-related events. Canine hip dysplasia CHD is an orthopaedic condition resulting from abnormal development of the hip joint and surrounding tissue causing the instability and partial dislocation of the hip joint, resulting in pain, inflammation , lameness, and potentially osteoarthritis of the joint. Both have stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. A German Shepherd named Inspector Rex is the star of an Austrian Police procedural drama program of the same name, which won many awards, where German Shepherd Rex assists the Vienna Kriminalpolizei homicide unit. It became one of the staple productions of Hungarian television history, making German Shepherds the most popular dog breed in the country ever since. Why did you decide to breed all black shepherds? The reason in a nutshell, was a dog named Paska. I had the privilege of owning my first all black German Shepherd while I was in college. I got Baron my freshman year in in St. After talking with numerous people all over the world and making numerous trips to kennels all over, I met Vincent Tran. Our common passion was an incredible all black German Shepherd working dog named Paska vom Salztalblick that had died a few years earlier. Vincent became a good friend quickly and he began sharing his experience traveling all over Europe and Germany, living and spending weeks with the top breeders in all of Europe including a lot of that time in Germany, studying their methods first hand and what he learned while importing the best dogs available. I purchased some of the top dogs from Vincent including Unkas and Beniti. And so began my breeding line, exclusively based on Paska vom Salztalblick and reproducing with almost carbon copy like accuracy using the most respected scientific method consisting of Mendalian genetics, replicas of quite possibly the best all black German Shepherd dog that has ever lived. V Paska vom Salztalblick We specialize in duplicating one of the best all black German Shepherds of all time, the world famous stud dog V Paska vom Salztalblick. In order to try to duplicate any dog, or horse or cow for that matter, one needs to strategically line breed using a 2 — 3 line breeding technique. Paska was on the cover of German Shepherd magazine a number of times and arguably, was the best all black german shepherd of all time. In fact, Paska vom Salztalblick is still considered to the most recognized and most coveted all black German Sheprhed among experts in the German Shepherd working dog lines who is internationally recognized as now being the gold standard that everyone is trying to achieve. Paska was a poven producer of temperament, drive and strong working ability. We try to use both parents who have shown very high working scores and both are proven producers of great health, hips and elbows with multi-generational excellence behind them. High withers, firm back with slightly short croup, good front and rear, good chest proportions, correct front, straight gait, powerful ground-covering gait. .TSB pronounced: The dog releases on command. In protection work, he shows a great dominance and yet a huge obedience and committed, hard full grips. Most of his progeny show an excellent conformation along with an outstanding working ability, focus and willingness to work. He has been used by several famous kennels for repeat crosses. .To get the best puppies possible obvously. To get the variance, we use different grand daughters with different sons from different lineages meaning Paska is the grand father of our females, and is the father of the males, but the mothers are different top dogs throughout the world. One reason for black dogs to rarely be excellent in conformation is due to the fact that black dogs, by definition are carrying recessive genes…thus the chance to have more flaws. To be a black dog, the dog has to have the recessive black gene from each parent, ie, both genes from both parents have to be the black gene. This actually explains why most black dogs do not meet the necessary standard to be the top in breed survery. It can also be postulated that because black is a recessive gene, it tends to carry more of the inferior characteristics that are not wanted in German Shepherds. But there is a huge advantage as well IF you can get the best black dogs with the perfect characteristics. There is just something different about them. To get a V rated, KK1 all black German Shepherd dog is relatively rare due to the above mentioned reasons in the paragraph above. And as a result, we are consistently getting carbon copies of Paska using these top dogs. And nobody is exclusively doing this in North America! Yes, that was my friend, Vincent. He did the first 2 breedings on 2 incredible dogs and I was so impressed with the puppies, I bought both the Sire and Dam. Spend less or spend more …we challenge you to beat our breedings! There is nothing better than when you put science together with genetics to yield an incredibly superior dog. Please note that we are exclusively breeding all black dogs. We may occasionally have bi-colored shepherd see pictures of Enno as an example of what a bi-colored looks like but it is rare, depending on the breeding. We do expect a few bi-colored German Shepherds in our upcoming litter with Enno and Nara see upcoming litters. We only have solid black german shepherds for sale and all our black German Shepherd lines are the best available anywhere in the world. Most of what we have are black german shepherd puppies for sale. However, we also sometimes have various aged, older black German Shepherd puppies for sale and some young adults occasionally for sale as well. These dogs are available either as is, or with additional training in obedience or both obedience and protection. Occasionally, we may even have a fully titled black german shepherd for sale available. We take this as a tremendous compliment because we do take great pride in our breeding program and are grateful that the quality of our dogs we are producing has now been internationally recognized. This breed of dogs of great strength, intelligence, training ability and very obedient which were raised at first for grazing, is currently the favourite one for carrying out rescue works, guide or police dogs. Ana Pellicer, acting mayor and councilwoman of Sports, who has presented with the president of the SECPA Delegation of Valencia, Rafael Arenillas the event, has been very satisfied with the election of Benidorm for the celebration of this exhibition because it demonstrates that "in our city there's room for everything" and that the facilities of Guillermo Amor "enjoys tremendous health". The councilwoman has invited all citizens to visit the exhibition because animal lovers will spend "a very pleasant time". For his part, Rafael Arenillas has explained that German shepherds with long hair and short hair will be qualified by an Italian judge. They will do it by categories: from 4 to 6 months, from 6 to 9, from 9 to 12 and then very young and young. Arenillas has confirmed the participation of German shepherds "practically of the whole national geography". In this type of meetings usually between 80 and German shepherds compete. They have to go for at least two or three: "one is the one who guides him" and the other two who call him "being able to make a good presentation". The president of the autonomic delegation of the society has ended remembering "the great hobby that exists in the whole national territory" to this breed, what guarantees the maximum influx of public in the sport city. Taking advantage of the exhibition, members of the Society of Animals and Plants 'La Marina Baixa' in Benidorm will distribute information about its services among the attendees and promote the adoption of pets from its shelter. Sound in mind and body, strong, functional, intelligent, trainable, courageous, and resilient. Protein When selecting what to feed your American Bulldog, choose a diet with high-quality animal-based protein sources, such as beef, chicken, turkey, lamb, duck, eggs, and fish. As such, protein impacts canine health in many ways, including: Providing consistent energy Forms new skin, hair, nails, and other tissue. Keeps the immune system healthy. Makes hormones, enzymes, and antibodies. Properly balanced fats are essential for optimal health, and also provide energy. Dietary fat we generally refer to as a triglyceride. There are two types of triglyceride, saturated and unsaturated fat. In balance, they promote a healthy coat, skin, eyes, nervous system, control hormones, fuel brain and learning, and reduce inflammation. Carbohydrates, such as vegetables and some fruits, provide fibre, prebiotics food for beneficial bacteria , and antioxidants that are lacking in meat alone. Dogs are carnivores, but they can benefit from some vegetation in their diets for optimal health. Natural vitamins and minerals A raw food diet aims to replicate what dogs evolved to eat in the wild. They love to play, and they really love to eat. Therefore, the best dog food for bulldogs should consist of plenty of high-quality proteins, enough carbohydrates to fuel their bodies, and fats for normal joint function and overall health. But just like us, dogs are individuals. So choosing a food specifically for their individual needs can be a little more complicated. For one, there are hundreds of different brands with different nutritional values that most of us would find confusing. And secondly, since each bulldog is different, they all have different weights, ages, activity levels, and preferences. Adding to the confusion, bulldogs can have sensitivities to certain ingredients and can be allergic to others. So to make the task easier, we have prepared a special guide for American Bulldog owners so they can identify which dog food will best suit their unique pup. Macro-nutrients or macros consist of three major groups of food; proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. We already have an idea about the number of macros we should feed bulldogs, but here are some details that you need to know: Proteins For an American Bulldog, proteins are the most important macro. Proteins consist of amino acids that help in repairing muscle tissue and provide lots of energy so your dog stays active. More than that, proteins also aid in the release of hormones and enzymes and help in strengthening the immune system, amongst other things. Because bulldogs have a muscular body, your dog food must provide enough protein to maintain their physical structure. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are necessary for providing energy to your bulldog. The two most common sources of carbohydrates in dog foods are grains brown rice, oatmeal, barley and vegetables potatoes, peas. Although carbohydrates are important too, you should generally opt for a dog food that has lower carbohydrate content. Fats Fats are important as they make dog food tastier and thus more appealing to your dog. But more than that, fats are essential for the healthy functioning of nerves, body cells, and joints. Fats also provide almost twice as much energy as proteins and carbs. Daily Caloric Intake for Bulldogs The question of how many calories a bulldog should eat is rather confusing. The reason for this is because bulldogs can vary drastically from one another, and thus will have completely different calorie requirements. Bulldogs can weigh anywhere between 60 to pounds on average, and their activity levels can vary widely as well. They might be a puppy, or an adult, or even a senior. Also, they can be either male or female and might be spayed or neutered. All of these factors play a huge role in determining the right amount of calories your bulldog should consume without being under or overfed. However, there still is a standard measure of how much calories your bulldog should consume. Some smaller bulldogs might even be satisfied with fewer than calories, while some heavier and more active ones would require as much as calories a day to stay lean and healthy. But like we said before, it all depends on the individual dog. These can give you a good estimate as to how much you should be feeding them. Thus feeding them with the right frequency can help make sure they remain healthy and fit. Puppies are generally more energetic but have smaller stomachs, and thus need regular feeding to stay active. For bulldogs between the ages of 4 to 6 months, the frequency should be reduced to three portions a day. And once your bulldog is older than six months, you can follow the adult feeding regime which is feeding them two portions a day. Common Health Issues in American Bulldogs Although bulldogs are a healthy breed, they are prone to developing health issues at any life stage. Early identification of these issues can protect your dog from more severe problems later on by making the necessary changes in their diet and lifestyle. Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, and Joint Problems Hip and Elbow dysplasia is a degenerative health condition in which the hip or elbow joints fail to develop properly, leading to pain and even arthritis later in life. Joint problems are also more common in bulldogs due to their larger body size compared to their short legs. Although hip and elbow dysplasia is genetic and incurable, recognizing them earlier on can prevent them from worsening with age. Feeding them proper food along with exercise and physical therapy can save your bulldog a lot of pain and discomfort in their golden years. Obesity Obesity is a particularly serious issue with bulldogs. Because these dogs love to eat, they can easily be overfed. Obesity worsens joint and hip conditions as well as leading to many other health problems. Place your thumbs on their back where their spine is, and wrap your fingers along their midsection so that your hand is wrapped around their body and then try to feel their ribs. Foods You Should Avoid Feeding Your Bulldog Just like any other pet, there are certain foods you should refrain from feeding your bulldog as well. Some of these foods can cause stomach issues, while others are toxic for bulldogs. Onion and Garlic: Both of these are extremely dangerous as they can cause anemia in bulldogs. If fed in large amounts, they can cause organ damage or failure. Chocolates: Although chocolate seems like a pretty harmless food, it is severely toxic to dogs. Fruits with pits: Most fruits that have pits in them contain cyanide. In large amounts, this can cause seizures, vomiting and an irregular heartbeat. Some pits also pose a choking hazard to bulldogs. Macadamia Nuts: These nuts contain compounds that can cause vomiting, inflammation, and joint pain in dogs. Food Allergies and Sensitivities in American Bulldogs Just like other dogs, American Bulldogs can be allergic or sensitive to certain ingredients too. Here are some of the more common allergies and sensitivities found in American Bulldogs: Grains: This is a very common sensitivity and allergy found in bulldogs. Soy: Soy is another ingredient that can cause rashes and itching in bulldogs. Beef: Although beef allergy only affects a minority of bulldogs, you should take it seriously. There are plenty of other dog foods with proteins like lamb, chicken, and turkey, which you can choose instead. The content on this blog is not a substitute for veterinary guidance. Chinese origins[ edit ] Pugs were brought from China to Europe in the sixteenth century. The pet pugs were highly valued by Chinese Emperors, and the royal dogs were kept in luxury and guarded by soldiers. In Tibet , Buddhist monks kept pugs as pets in their monasteries. Pugs were painted by Goya in Spain, and in Italy they rode up front on private carriages, dressed in jackets and pantaloons that matched those of the coachman. They were used by the military to track animals and people, and were also employed as guard dogs. His self-portrait , which is now in London's Tate Gallery , includes his pug, Trump. Every carriage I meet here has a Pug in it. Many responded to the breed's image of anti-functionalism and diminutive size during this period. The modern pug's appearance probably changed after when a new wave of pugs were imported directly from China. These pugs had shorter legs and the modern-style pug nose. The British aristocrat Lady Brassey is credited with making black pugs fashionable after she brought some back from China in .Hogarth's painting from the 18th century depicts the originally longer muzzle, as well as the picture in a edition of Brehms Tierleben. Since there has been a trend in some countries to breed "retro pugs". Following the deaths of pugs and other brachycephalic breeds, several airlines either banned their transport in cargo or enacted seasonal restrictions. Pugs have elongated palates. When excited, they are prone to " reverse sneezing " which causes them to quickly and seemingly laboriously gasp and snort. The veterinary name for this is pharyngeal gag reflex and it is caused by fluid or debris getting caught under the palate and irritating the throat or limiting breathing. Reverse sneezing episodes are usually not harmful, and massaging the dog's throat or covering its nose in order to make it breathe through its mouth can often shorten a sneezing fit. In serious cases, it makes breathing even more difficult and puts added pressure on the larynx. If this happens, one should inquire with their veterinarian whether or not surgery is needed to open the nostrils. If the prolapse happens on a regular basis, the pug might require surgery. This condition is caused when parasitic mites, that are often present in a dog's skin without causing symptoms, are allowed to do damage because their host has a weakened immune system. It is a problem for many young pugs, although not usually a major one, and is easily treatable, but some are especially susceptible and present with a systemic form of the condition. The condition occurs when two parts of a spinal vertebra do not fuse properly while a young pug is still growing, resulting in an irregularly shaped spinal cavity which can put pressure on the spinal cord. Pug photo, ca .Note its small head and long legs. A pug by Carl Reichert. The pug that was predominantly featured in the commercials was Cheeka. A few other adverts also appeared in the following months, inspired by the idea of a dog following a boy. This is an old breed, thought to originate all the way back to around BC. Ancient Chinese people owned flat faced dogs that according to writings were very similar to the dog that we know of today. They were most likely this breed's direct ancestors. They did have a very short coat, in fact the name for these specifically short haired dogs was lo chiang sze and later became lo-sze. Due to its ancestry, this breed is often referred to by its nickname of the Chinese Pug. Stepping ahead in history, In , this breed became the official canine of Dutch royalty. They were considered to be very special, often brought along to important events such as royal ceremonies. This breed remained popular as time went on, Napoleon and his wife owned one in .They were brought to American after the time of the Civil War. The breed was perfected and now the Pug as we know him today is popular all over the world. There are rumors that still persist today that during the 's, there were long haired variations to be found. However, there are no records of any photographs. NOTE: Updated information: We may have found several long haired Pugs despite the evidence that he can't exist, more ahead. During all of these time periods, there were no offspring that had long coats, at least none that were purebred. And the Search Continues. As we search for what type of dog may be considered a very rare, long haired versions of our beloved Pug, we have found a couple of things that may be what is causing this potential phenomenon and persistent rumors that such a canine exists: Two different physical traits may be confused with a long coat: Pug with a very long, uncurled tail; not a long-haired Pug, but may be one reason for the term. Thickness of the Fur- This breed does have short hair, however its density can vary. Most have 2 layers of hair, an undercoat and an overcoat. Both are short and thick and tend to shed quite a bit. Some may have a thicker top coat than others and this can sometimes lead to the dog having what is known as a more wooly coat.Tails - Another element that may bring one to think about long haired Pugs is that some have much longer hairs on the tail than the rest of the body. As you can see on this dog above, the hairs on the tail are longer than the rest of the coat. However, with purebreds, this never extends to the back or any other area. Cross Breeds The photo that you see to the right is not a purebred, though at first glace one may think it is a long haired Pug. What you are seeing is a mixed dog. She is half Pug and half Pomeranian. We are not sure why anyone would want to mix those 2 purebreds, however this is the end result. The Pom has a famously thick double coat, the outer layer is long and creates an appearance of a "ball of fluff".That breed is famous for its coat. Therefore, when bred together with a Pug, the offspring can be similar to this dog that you see here. The face is flat, the ears look about right, the body is short and stocky. How Another Breed in the Bloodline can Cause a Pug to Have a Long Coat When a puppy is born, it carries traits not only from its parents, but can also show traits going back, normally 5 generations, and sometimes more. Therefore, when 2 Pugs are bred and the resulting litter produces a puppy with long hair, one may automatically jump to the conclusion that they have produced the much sought after and mysterious long haired Pug. However, if any of the dogs withing those 5 generations back were not purebred Pugs and just 1 of them was a breed with a long coat, this can jump generations and cause the puppy to have that characteristic. Without carefully planned breeding, it is possible for a dog that looks exactly like a purebred to have a longer coat. But it will be there due to a deviation from purebred breeding somewhere down the line, most often within the last 5 generations. There is also the possibility that 2 dogs, a Pug and another with a long coat are bred together and the resulting litter holds some puppies that have much more of the Pug appearance that that of the other dog. That puppy may then be sold as a Pug, when it is indeed not a purebred. If registered with the CKC Continental Kennel Club or other canine registry other than those that have strict guidelines, papers may misleadingly back up the claims of being purebred. Is he living proof of an actual long haired purebred Pug dog? Let's look into this further.Dyanne last name withheld for privacy reasons , the owner of this Pug had seen what appeared to be a long-haired Pug at a farmer's market that was adorable. That dog's owner stated the dog was a purebred, though did not mention where he was obtained from. But this made her wish for that type of dog. A few month later, in search of a Pug, Dyanne contacted 2 breeders. When one of the breeder's had a litter and told Dyanne that some of the pups had curiously longer coats than normal, that sealed the deal! She went over and choose the one that she wanted. While looking over the litter, she did notice that the ones with longer coats appeared to be slightly larger than the short coated puppies. It is said that he came from a litter of 7 puppies, 3 of which had long coats. When he and the other pups with longer fur were born, the breeder was surprised and contacted the owner of the stud dog. She was told that the stud dog's grandmother had a long coat. Very interesting is the fact that this dog is registered with the AKC as a purebred. Here is a screenshot of the AKC registration with personal information blocked out. So, what we can say for a fact is that this dog - clearly with longer fur than a standard Pug should have - is registered as a purebred. However, we must mention the following is possible: 1 All AKC breeders are on the honor system regarding the parents of a puppy. In other words, if a breeder owns 2 purebreds and the purebred dam accidentally mates with a stray dog, a breeder technically can tell the AKC that the purebred sire is the father and without DNA testing - which is voluntary on the breeder's behalf - the AKC will trust the breeder. If so, the gene for the long hair jumped many generations. Since the great-grandmother of this Pug is said to have had long hair, perhaps that dog's grandparent was a different breed or something to this effect. Do, however, note that a 4th or 5th generation mixed dog can be extremely close to being a purebred. Once again, and it is .And in this example, a 5th generation dog that had long hair but looked like a Pug would be .What about DNA testing for this long haired Pug? You didn't think this would all be cleared up so easily, did you? We must remember that Velvet is almost 15 years old. His owner tells us that many years ago, he had a health condition in which knowing if he had any other breed in his bloodline was important. Due to that, DNA testing was indeed done. Over the years, that document has been misplaced. There was never a reason for his owner to pay to have it done again, so there is - alas - no documented DNA proof. Let's look at some photos of 'Velvet the long haired Pug' at several different ages, including as a puppy: As you can see, this is one cute dog! Is he purebred? And that somewhere, deep in the bloodline there was a long coated dog mixed in. Since this dog's great-grandmother was a purebred Pug with a long coat, that means that one of her ancestors - perhaps 3, 4 or more generations back from her was of another breed. When you talk about another breed mixed in that far back, the dog in question is - by most assumptions - a purebred for all intents and purposes. More about this remarkable long coated Pug: He loves healthy snacks for Pugs including carrots and apples and lightly snores when he sleeps. When he was younger, he loved to take long hikes with his owner. He even used to jump into water at the beach, though he doesn't have the best swimming skills. He's also very crafty. He is now in his golden years, enjoying his life with his loving owner whom we want to thank for sharing her story and these amazing photos of what may be evidence of a true, long haired Pug. He is owned by Mette, who lives in Denmark. When he was born, both he and his sister had fur that was a bit fluffier than the other pups in the litter. As he's grown, he's transitioned into a long haired Pug. The sire and dam have had several litters; this was the only one that produced any long haired dogs. Though the litter was not registered, both parents appeared to be purebred, as did the other shorter haired puppies. Mette tells us that he is a typical Pug in every other way; he is very loving, trusting and faithful. All rights reserved. A Husky and a Golden Retriever make a strong, outward-oriented dog. They are great for running on tough terrain, hiking, skiing, and other canine activities. Many people like the surprise factor. It can be exciting not knowing what your Goberian pup will look like when he's older. A Golden Retriever Husky puppy is a dangerously adorable thing. Let's face it! This is why this mix has caught the attention of dog breeders and potential buyers. The combination of Husky and Golden Retriever is often a perfect blend of the two breeds. It has the drive and desire for adventure of the Husky mixed with its friendliness and gentleness. He is often compared to a Golden Retriever who drank an energy drink. However, this comparison is only hypothetical. They love cuddles and can be gentle while playing. Although they can sometimes be protective of their family members, they are generally good with new people and strangers. Husky and Retrievercross dogs get their defensive side from their Husky parents, but it's often contained and only shows up when they feel threatened. The Goberian Golden Retriever Siberian Husky Mix can be rebellious at times and take things in their own direction, just like purebred Huskies and other Husky mixes. The stubbornness of the Goberian is a characteristic that comes with the territory. Although they can be adorable, they should be supervised by an owner to ensure they don't hurt themselves. Since the Husky and Golden Retriever can roam freely, they may need some dog training or house training before they can be trusted off-leash. These books are perfect for dog training! The Goberian dog is the perfect dog for an adventurous and loving family, able to keep up with their dog's energy level and open to new experiences. Child Compatibility The Golden Husky-Golden Husky mix has proven to be an excellent choice for families with children. He is known to have the gentle and loving manners of the Goldens. It's a great way to get your kids away from the TV and other electronics. It also allows you to teach them early that all dogs, regardless of design, should be walked every day. You never know; they might believe you if you tell them their furry friend is a Golden Retriever mixed breed wolf. Many of these mixes are more wolf-like. However, this does not necessarily apply to everyone. Some grow up looking like fluffy teddy bears. Siberian Husky and Golden Retriever mixed breed dogs should not be left alone with children under three. Accidents can happen even with the most affectionate mixed-breed dogs. Up to inches tall Between lbs Up to inches tall Between lbs Coat This Husky Mix has a double coat that is medium in length. Regular grooming can help with shedding, although we will go into more detail about that later on. Color The Goberian has a golden coat that is mostly taken from their Golden Retriever parent. However, it can also be different shades of gold or even to dark and white tinted colors, which can resemble the Husky more closely. Temperament The Goberian is a friendly, loving and outgoing dog that loves to be around people. This pup took the most desirable traits from both parents and is still affectionate and family orientated like the Golden Retriever, but is also very outgoing and playful like the Husky. Due to the fact that they are so active, they love to be around people and will thrive in an environment where they can exercise a lot. They make great playmates for children, but also love to spend time cuddling with their owners. Unfortunately, they can be prone to separation anxiety and do not like to be left alone. This is something to keep in mind if you are out for hours at a time. The Husky is quite a protective breed and often the Goberian can inherit this. They are not aggressive at all, but will feel they have dominance over strangers. Lifespan The average life expectancy of the Goberian is between 10 and 15 years. Known Health Issues Crossbreeding dogs often helps to eliminate health problems that the parent breeds are predisposed to. We have laid these out below. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. This can be passed down from both the Golden Retriever and Husky parents. Cataracts — you might suspect your dog has cataracts if they are constantly bumping into furniture. Fortunately, cataracts can be cured with surgery. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any severe issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we know all about the traits and characteristics of the Golden Retriever Husky Mix, it is time to take a look at what daily life with one of these dogs is actually like. We will cover their food and diet, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. Food And Diet As an active breed, the Goberian requires quite a lot of food. They need around 1, calories per day, which equates to around two to three cups of food, and should be split into two meals a day. Of course, you should always check the back of the dog food packet to confirm how much you should be feeding them of a certain food based on their exact weight. Ensure you feed your Goberian high quality kibble. Due to their exercise needs, they also require a lot of protein to keep their muscles lean. You can also buy a food that is formulated specially for large breeds. Take a look at the food we recommend below. As the Goberian is an active dog, they need a lot of protein in their diet. With chicken as the number one ingredient, this food is easy to digest and helps to promote nutrient absorption. Even better, this food is manufactured in the US so you can be sure it is safe for your pooch to eat. Exercise The Goberian dog is a very active breed with high exercise needs. You will need to make sure you can dedicate at least an hour of your day to walking this pup, although more would be preferable. They love to accompany you on hikes and walks and would benefit from a family who is constantly out exercising. If you overexercise them before this, then it can lead to health issues. They are an intelligent breed that like to be kept busy and entertained. An extremely active breed, they will thrive in an active household where they can accompany the whole family while you are out exercising. This breed loves children and makes an excellent playmate, loving to play games and engaging with humans. However, you should be careful when young children play with the Goberian — often these dogs can get frustrated. Due to their loving and affectionate nature, this hybrid dog fits well into many different types of home. This can be fixed with socialization, but you must make sure you give them toys to play with to keep them mentally stimulated while you are not at home. This will help to alleviate boredom and stop unwanted behaviors. Goberians are quite big animals with high energy and therefore need space to run around. These dogs are not suited to apartment living and benefit from a large backyard. If they do not have enough space, they may start to exhibit destructive behaviors. It is also worth noting that you and your family must be able to dedicate time to this dog for exercising every day, otherwise they will have a lot of built up energy and become very frustrated! Training The Goberian is not a difficult breed to train, but it does take time and patience from you. Because of their Husky parent, the Goberian can be a little cheeky and mischievous in training, so you must persevere. This is why training is so important — the older they get without training, the more mischievous they will get! All dogs respond well the positive reinforcement training, such as reward based training. This includes verbal praise and treats. You should never get angry at your Goberian because they will not understand and it will make them not want to learn. Socializing Socialization is important for any dog breed. You must be able to show your pup that there is nothing to be afraid of, so socialization should start at a young age. You should introduce them to new sights, sounds, places, smells, people and animals in a safe and controlled environment. This way, they will grow up to be a much more well-rounded and friendly dog. Grooming Due to their thick coat, you may think that the Goberian sheds a lot. However, they actually do not shed as much as their Husky parent and only require weekly grooming to keep their coat neat and not tangled or matted. Luckily, Goberians do not require much grooming and will only need a bath once a month, particularly when they are dirty. You can take them to the groomers if this is easier. The groomers will also be able to help you trim their nails, which should be done when necessary. This will prevent dental decay and disease. You can always use dental sticks if needed. Goberian Breed Traits. Confidence Protectiveness Husky Golden Retrievers are inclined to enjoy their alone time. They are not prone to having separation anxiety. However, it is not recommended to leave them alone for too long. You could find them trying to escape the house. Because of their nature, it is advisable to have this pet when you have a large backyard. This mixed puppy is known to be friendly and gentle to the family members. They usually get along with all the members and are affectionate to children too. They can be fans of cuddling. Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppies can be excellent watchdogs. With proper training and sufficient bonding with their owners, they are obedient and alert to suspicious people. They are quite protective of the family members when there is a threatening situation. Husky Mixed with Golden Retriever pups tends to have independent thinking. This trait comes from their Husky origin. At times, they may come off as obnoxious and act on their volition. They may be disobedient to your commands. When dealing with this behavior, it is crucial to remember that you need patience in caring for them. This mixed breed dog has a strong prey drive. They tend to chase smaller creatures. Be sure to keep an eye on other small animals such as cats and squirrels. Backyard Breeders Rescue Shelters Professional Breeders If you will spend money, I highly advise buying from professional breeders among these options. These people take good care of the dogs and prevent inbreeding to guarantee minimal health problems. Reliable breeders can provide you with results of genetic testing for the parent dogs and offspring, as well as records of vaccination and other pertinent documents. They also provide health clearances for the parent dogs. However, before buying from professional breeders, you can also consider visiting your local shelters to check if there is an available Golden Retriever Husky puppy and if you can adopt it. There are also rescue-centers that are breed-specific and non-profit. However, it is remarkable that the mixed breed of Golden Retriever and Husky do not shed much, and it is considered part of the low shedders. Aside from the aesthetic purpose of grooming, there are a lot more reasons to accomplish this activity. Developing a more intimate relationship Maintaining the cleanliness and physical health Bringing out the natural oil on the coat Avoid issues like bug infestations Checking anomalies and possible health problems Here is a list of the tools and equipment you will need for grooming this pup: Slicker Brush Cotton Ball Nail Clipper A regular grooming routine is essential in keeping the shiny and healthy coat of your Husky Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A fundamental step in the grooming routine is regular brushing using a slicker brush. Other steps include giving a bath, trimming the nails, and cleaning its ears. The use of a slicker brush over a pin brush is advisable due to its purpose of untangling mats or knots in the fur. Also, it helps in removing debris and loose hair. It can run through the thick layers of the double coat and facilitate effective grooming. Another advantage of this brush is its massaging quality since it has long pins. Massaging the skin of your pup will stimulate the production of essential oils for moisturizing the coat. Also, this will increase the blood circulation and promote health for the dog. This activity should be done at least once a week to decrease the amount of shedding and avoid matting of fur. In brushing the whole coat, you need to brush places of matting and thicker fur more diligently. If your dog has a collar, remove it when brushing the coat, and do not leave out the neck area unkempt. Cutting matted fur should only be done when you cannot brush out the mat. The next step is bathing your pup, especially when it is smelly and dirty. Some people proceed to trim the coat of the puppy before bathing it. It is your discretion if you will follow the steps to the dot. After lathering with shampoo and then rinsing the coat, you can opt to blow-dry the coat. The frequency of bathing will also depend on your decision, based on the smell and sanitary condition of the Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. After the bath, you will proceed to brush the coat again. Then, you will initiate the trimming process. In trimming, you should avoid trimming the entire coat. The double coat of your puppy functions as an insulation against the fluctuating weather. It also traps warm air on a cold day and cool air on a hot day. Usually, groomers use clippers for this process. However, you may opt to use thinning shears for cutting parts of the coat. You need to trim the fuzzy hair growth around the edges cleanly. You will trim the fur between the toes next. For cracked dog pads, you can apply Vaseline as a regimen. In trimming the legs, you will cut the unkempt fur to achieve symmetry and balance. The fur on the front of the legs is shorter than that on the back. The hair on the back of the legs should flare out slightly behind the dog. Similar with the legs, trimming the chest and neck should aim to remove the unkempt fur. It should be noted that you will move the thinning shears with the direction of hair growth. After the neck and chest areas, you will trim the fur around the ears. This step will help fend off parasites. Lastly, you will trim the tail. For this step, you will trim the length by tapering the tail, starting from the base to the tip. Part of the grooming process is checking for wax buildup in the ears and signs of an ear infection. You can clean their ears with a cotton ball and a dog-specific ear solution. You should never use a cotton swab for their ears. You can also use a cotton ball with mineral oil or microfiber cloth with mineral oil to remove debris from the eyes. The frequency of this activity depends on the rate of its toenail growth. Long names may break, and cause irregular gait and infection. If you do not have this much time in your hands, you should schedule appointments with trustworthy groomers around your neighborhood. Husky Mixed with Golden Retriever Puppies Health Problems Most of the Husky mixed with Golden Retriever dogs are free of fatal and congenital diseases, primarily because of their enlarged gene pool. Their average life span is 10 to 13 years. One condition you need to prevent is heat stroke. Since this breed has a dense and double coat, they do not tolerate heat as much as they tolerate cold weather. You should protect your puppy from overexposure to the sun and keep it well hydrated. Even if there is a reduced risk for the usual health conditions from the parent breeds, it is important to know the possible diseases your puppy may acquire, especially when it gets older. One these health problems is a cataract, an opacity of the eye lens. When your dog acquires this disease, its eyes will appear cloudy. One of the possible health problems is hip or elbow dysplasia. This is an inheritable disease wherein the thighbone does not attach properly with the hip joint. Elbow dysplasia involves joint laxity due to different growth rates of the bones of the elbow. Vaccinations are weapons against fatal diseases. There is a generally accepted guideline of puppy vaccination. Some of the recommended vaccinations are measles, rabies, and DHPP which is the combination of vaccines for distemper, adenovirus, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus. By knowing the possible serious health issues of this mixed pup, you can be more watchful when your pup manifests some warning signs related to these possible conditions. Golden Retriever Mixed with Husky Food Requirements The following factors determine the amount of food you will give to your Golden Retriever mixed with Husky puppy: Age—choose a chow that is age-appropriate; our essential guides to the best puppy food brands and the best senior dry dog food will help you find the right one! Size—depending on the size, some pups will thrive on the best dry dog food for small dogs whereas others will be better off with the best large breed dry dog food Metabolism Level of activity The kind of food recommended for this mixed breed is dry food, preferably one of the brands featured in our best dry dog food guide. Commonly, medium to large dogs is given three to four cups of nutritious dog food, divided into two meals. Just like with human food, there are brands you should avoid at any cost. For your convenience, we singled out some of the worst dry dog food brands. Meanwhile, Golden Retrievers have a big appetite and are at risk for obesity. This classification means that you should provide them with lots of mental and physical stimulation. The duration of physical activity would be enough to maintain its weight and protect them from lifestyle diseases. I recommend walking, running, playing with Frisbee or tennis ball for your Golden Retriever Crossed with Husky puppy. If the Golden Retriever Husky mix puppy does not get enough physical and mental stimulation, it may exhibit behavioral problems. These problems include inappropriate barking, chewing, and causing property destruction. This breed is intelligent and fast learners. However, their independent side may antagonize your directions if training started late. An effective way to facilitate the training is by initially having short training sessions. To avoid possible destructive behavior that can be traced to their Husky origin, you should employ obedience training and leash training. You need to assert yourself as the leader by having consistency and clarity. A reliable way to do this task is making the puppy wait for its food. This act will establish your role as the provider and keeper of all the resources, such as the treats, food, toys, and other assets. During training, it is possible to encounter mischief and fluctuations in concentration. A way to prevent this situation is keeping the sessions short. However, you should be cautious and never leave your child and the dog alone. This action could aggravate and provoke the pet. Aside from the appropriate training for the dog, you should teach your child to avoid disturbing or playing with the pup when it is eating or sleeping. Golden Retriever mixed with Husky pups are affectionate to families. They have an innate loyal character, and they enjoy being around people. This trait is probably attributable to its Golden Retriever parent.

Since the Labrador could grow to a hefty size, its yearly upkeep still falls within the expected price range of other big dogs. Always take your puppy to regular vet checkups, even if it looks like the very picture of health. Though these things are not high on the priority list, consider them nice-to-haves once the budget allows. Besides, we all want the best for our four-legged friends, and that alone is reason enough for most of us! Boarding Kennels: This service is a lifesaver for owners who have to travel for days or weeks at a time and cannot bring their dog along with them. Professional Grooming: As we said earlier, Labrador Retrievers shed a lot, so an afternoon at the groomer will help keep your pooch looking clean and tidy. You can put off spending on these things until the budget allows. However, give some serious thought to investing in an emergency fund, as this would take a big worry off your mind in case of any unexpected trips to the vet. Though it is tempting to buy a dog from pet stores or backyard breeders because of their low puppy prices, getting Lab puppies from a reputable source is still a more responsible and ethical choice. Here is a list of responsible breeders where you can find Labrador puppies for sale: Rhumbline Retrievers — This New York-based kennel has been breeding quality Labrador Retriever puppies since , and a good number of their dogs have participated in agility, obedience, and hunting tests at the national level. Money-Saving Tips for Labrador Retriever Owners We all want to give our dog the best life possible, and if we can do that without breaking the bank, then even better! The trick is finding the right balance on which expenses to let go of and which ones to keep. To help you achieve this, here are some money-saving tips for Labrador Retriever owners: DIY dog food and treats. Not only is this a more practical option, but this is also healthier for your dog. Practice your grooming skills. Watch a good tutorial and practice your skills on your pooch. Invest in high-quality supplies. You may want to scrimp on supplies such as food and water bowls, but investing in high-quality and durable essentials will save you more money in the long run. Training Labrador Retrievers is a fairly easy task, even for novice dog owners. A lot of great tutorials can be found on the internet, and being the intelligent dogs that they are, they will learn all their tricks in no time! Like pet insurance, regular vet visits will save you from procedures and medications that could cost thousands of dollars later. Pet quality pups are affordable and budget-friendly to most people who are looking for an intelligent and well-tempered canine companion. However, like most dogs, their lifetime cost would still require you to spend considerable money. As such, think long and hard about the commitment and financial implications of taking in a dog. These canines make great family pets, even for those looking for their first dog. So, if your budget is enough to shoulder the price and long-term costs of the Labrador Retriever, then it might just be the pooch for you! Tell us in the comment box below! My passion for animals started at a very young age as I grow up on a farm with several horses, cows, cats, chickens, and dogs on our property. Leave a Comment. The costs will be a bit higher at first while you get your dog the shots it requires and pay for the frequent visits to the vet. We also recommend getting your dog spayed or neutered unless you are a professional breeder, and it might even be required as part of your contract if you purchase from a breeder. Once your dog is an adult, it will not require as many vet visits and will only need booster shots every few years, so the average monthly costs will be much lower. Experts recommend getting all of the shots, but your dog is only legally required to get the rabies shot. We recommend purchasing a high-quality brand with real meat like chicken, turkey, or salmon listed as the first ingredient. The protein in meat will help build muscle and provide the energy your dog needs to stay healthy. High protein diets will also help your dog stay full longer, and it will be less likely to come looking for food. Foods with corn as the top ingredient are mostly empty calories that will leave your pet feeling hungry and looking for more food, potentially causing it to become obese. During the shedding seasons of spring and fall, you will likely need to increase the brushing to several times a week to help keep the fur off your furniture and floor. Professional grooming can also help with teeth brushing and nail clipping. This medication can also help prevent heartworm. Spot Pet Insurance offers customizable plans that you can adapt to your breed's specific needs. Many people forgo pet insurance, but it can be a great way to protect yourself from a huge expense while making sure your Labrador Retriever has the best healthcare possible. Accidents and serious illnesses can occur at any time, and many procedures can cost thousands of dollars which makes the price of insurance more than worth it, especially if you get it while your dog is still a puppy. It can chew up stuffed animals quickly, so they can get expensive, but there are plenty of options for a chewing dog, like the Lab. Another option is to purchase a subscription to a monthly service like the Bark Box that sends your dog new toys and activities for as long as you keep up your subscription. A full-grown dog only requires food and flea and tick medication to stay healthy, a few toys to play with, and treats here and there. Additional Costs to Factor In If you like to go on long vacations, you might need to factor in the additional costs of traveling with a dog. Many rental cars do not allow pets or will charge you extra, and the same is true for hotels. Owning a Labrador Retriever on a Budget Your Labrador Retriever will be relatively inexpensive once you get the medical things out of the way. A high-quality food may seem more expensive, but it will help keep your dog full so that it will eat less. Image Credit: Pixel-Shot, Shutterstock Saving Money on Labrador Retriever Care The best way to save money on healthcare when raising your Labrador Retriever is to keep it a healthy weight by following portion recommendations on the food you serve and by helping them get enough exercise. Obesity can lead to heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues that can shorten the lifespan of your pet. After the initial cost of the puppy , you will need to pay a few hundred dollars to get it spayed or neutered and get the shots it needs. After that, you will only need to provide food and shelter with the occasional booster shot. We hope you have enjoyed reading over this guide, and that it has helped answer your questions. If we have helped you create a budget that allows you to get one of these amazing pets, please share this guide on how much it costs to own a Labrador Retriever on social media. Featured Image Credit: scott, Pixabay Contents. How Much Does a Labrador Cost? And, this is just the upfront cost of the puppy. This includes the cost of food, veterinary bills, grooming, bedding, and so on. Labrador puppy costs depend on a few factors. Quality of the breeder Quality of the parent dogs Type of Labrador eg. For instance, puppy prices tend to be higher before Christmas, so buy a puppy in the spring, instead. Originally, black Labs were favored above other colors. Brown and yellow Labs were extremely uncommon, and were not at all desirable. Over time, this opinion changed and brown and yellow Labs became more accepted. Shooting communities still tend to prefer the black Lab, but yellow Labs are very common in other working roles, like as therapy dogs and guide dogs. On the whole, each official Labrador color will cost a similar amount. But, yellow and brown Labs may cost slightly more than black Labs, since the genes that cause their coloring are recessive and therefore are less common. Non-Standard Colors Labrador costs can be hugely increased or reduced by non standard colors or patterns. For instance, dilute shades or mismarks. Dilute coloring is recessive and highly controversial in the Labrador community. The genes that cause these shades will dilute pigmentation, turning black Labs into charcoal Labs, chocolate Labs into silver Labs, and yellow Labs into champagne Labs. Some believe this color results from cross-breeding. But, others believe the recessive genes simply remained hidden over generations, like original yellow and chocolate coloring. Dilute colors are not accepted in the official breed standard. So, many breeders will not adjust their price, and may even lower it for unexpected dilute puppies. The same is the case with mismarks. Mismarks can include white patches and spots, brindling, and even tan markings. Extensive mismarks will disqualify a Lab from show. Show type Labs are bred to fit the Labrador breed standard. They are usually slightly stockier and less active than field types. Field types are more often bred for their working ability than for any specific appearance. Labradors cost more when they are bred to show standards. Field Labs tend to be cheaper than Labradors bred for show. But, you should consider which type is best for you, rather than just going for the cheapest Labrador you can find. Field type Labs can be much more energetic and active than show types. First time owners may find the English Lab slightly easier to raise and train! Conversely, Labrador costs can be highest with field trial champion bred dogs that are likely to win awards. Labrador Costs From Breeders vs Shelters Labrador puppies from reputable breeders will cost more than dogs from a rescue center. Whilst Labs from breeders can cost thousands of dollars, Labradors from rescue centers can only be a few hundred dollars. A major difference between Labs from a breeder and Labs from a rescue center is the history of the dogs. Puppies from a breeder will stay with their mom and siblings until 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks, puppies can go to their new home. Rescue center dogs can have unknown histories, or even histories that involve abuse. Labs from rescue centers are usually older, and have often lived with other families. However, many Labs are given up for non-behavioral reasons. They can be just as wonderful pets as puppies from a breeder. And, many dogs from rescue centers will have basic training, including house training, obedience, and potentially recall. Why Are Breeders So Expensive? Reputable breeders tend to cost more than any other puppy source. Breeders have to spend a lot when breeding a litter, and all of this will lower their profit margins. Labrador breeding costs include: Health testing and certificates. Are they good family dogs? Labrador Dog Price — The Costs Involved Buying a Labrador is not just a question of the purchase price of a Lab puppy, though of course that is important. There are other costs involved, both financial, emotional and in terms of time and effort. So we need to look at those too. You may be wondering whether you will have the time for a dog, and if you have the space and energy for a large and lively breed? But this page will take you back to the fundamental considerations, to help you to make the right choice for you and your family. Do you have time for a dog? Can you afford a dog? What about your lifestyle? Will a dog fit in with your family? Is a Labrador the right dog for you? These questions all apply regardless of the type of Labrador you are looking for. The needs of a black Lab, yellow Lab or chocolate Lab are all the same in these respects. The same goes for an English or American Labrador too. Dogs need space, both indoors and outside. Even small breeds need room to stretch their legs and run about. And Labradors as fairly large and lively dogs need quite a lot of space. This means you need a decent sized backyard if you plan on buying a Labrador puppy. Somewhere that your Lab dog can run around, play and enjoy training sessions with you. Labradors can be quite silly during adolescence, bouncing and cavorting in the home. Their tails are long and thick, easily knocking any fragile decorations you might have from shelves. If you have lots of ornaments then you will need to move them to higher shelves to avoid them getting damaged. You will also need to move anything that could be easily damaged by chewing. With small puppies this will be very often indeed. Perhaps every 15 to 20 minutes during their first few days with you. If you live in a flat, or do not have a garden, this will be difficult for you. These are helpful but do take up a lot of space. Although this will take up a lot of space indoors, it can work very well for larger apartments with no easy outside access. Ideally however you do need to have a garden, and a part of the garden which your dog can use as a bathroom, along with a good system for clearing up after him hygienically. Space is key for a Lab dog! The right space for a Labrador includes large clear rooms in the house, with no breakable or fragile objects within his grasp. And ideally access to a garden where they can easily be let out to the bathroom and have room to play. Keeping a single Labrador permanently outside however is not usually a good idea, even with adequate shelter and security. Labs are very sociable dogs and prone to separation anxiety if they lack company. This means your dog may be both sad and noisy. It is always sad to hear from new puppy owners that are struggling to juggle the needs of a puppy with their need to work. These articles will help you to deal with this common issue. Even with a visit at lunch time. An older dog may cope with being left for up to four hours in row on a regular basis, but puppies need more attention than this. Contented Labradors are fairly quiet dogs and unlikely to disturb your neighbors. Nor are they very good guard dogs. However, lonely dogs bark and wreck things. If you work all day, can you afford to pay someone to come in and let him out to stretch his legs and empty himself? Or do you have a relative or friend that would be prepared to do this on a regular basis. Bear in mind that this is quite a lot to ask of anyone in the long term. The biggest long term time commitment in owning a dog is in the form of training and exercise. Training Takes Time All dogs need training in order that they can rub along in human society without being a complete nuisance. This means a regular daily commitment of ten to twenty minutes from you, in addition to your regular interaction with the dog. Training cannot be saved up for the weekend, your dog will have forgotten most of what he learnt the weekend before, and he does not have the attention span to concentrate on you for an hour and a half. You can find out more about training your Labrador puppy here. Staying Fit Exercise is required on a regular basis, for some breeds of dog this means at least an hour a day of walking or jogging to keep your dog fit and healthy. You can find out more about the exercise requirements of a Labrador puppy here. Whilst your dog will not come to any harm if you miss a day occasionally, a daily routine is often the best way to ensure that you build this important habit. Can You Afford A Dog? Dogs can be quite expensive to run. You need to consider not only how much a Labrador will cost you to buy, but also how much it will cost you to keep. How much do Labradors cost from breeders? The price of a Labrador puppy will vary from breeder to breeder, and from place to place. Perhaps you know a friend that has a litter of puppies and they are going to let you have one for free. However, the purchase price of a dog is almost irrelevant. It is such a small part of the final cost. The cost of keeping a Labrador The reality is, you are also going to need to fork out a chunk of your wages each week on keeping your pooch happy and healthy. Obviously you will have taken the cost of a good brand of Labrador puppy food into consideration. It is a good idea to budget for veterinary insurance too. Not because it is unreasonably priced, but simply because it is now so advanced. You can fix a lot of problems these days. We can do open heart surgery, mend complex fractures, treat cancer with radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pretty much anything you can treat in a human, you can now treat in a dog. And the catch? It costs. The more comprehensive your insurance package the more it will cost. Watch out for very cheap deals, as they may not provide continuing cover for long term ailments. You will also need to vaccinate your dog against common canine illness , and this will probably need to be done each year too. Especially if you are wanting to occasionally leave them in boarding kennels when you go away, as they require up to date vaccination certificates. Labrador Puppy Costs There will be a few other one-off costs such as a puppy crate and puppy play pen for your home for when your dog is young, another for your car if you have one. Then there are bowls, bedding, collar, leash etc. But you may be able to borrow a crate or get one second hand. Here are some of the items you will need for your new Labrador puppy, and reviews on the best options for Labradors:. Temperament: Friendly, stubborn and playful. Pugs are known for their wrinkly squished face, curled tail and sturdy body. Shih Tzus tend to look very different. They are often shorter, with wide bodies and longer fur. They also possess a squished face, but it is not wrinkly like that of the Pug. Expect your mix to have a sturdy body with long legs, and the smushed face of a Shih Tzu. Their tail can be either curly or straight, but tends to curve over their backs. Coat and Colors The Pug Shih Tzu mix comes in a range of different colors, including black, white, fawn, brindle and brown. Brown and brindle tend to be the most common, and white markings are very common with these dogs. Their coat is long and will need regular trimming as it does continue to grow. It is straight in texture and soft to the touch — this means that it is prone to tangling, so daily brushing is a must for this breed. Height and Weight These dogs tend to be on the sturdier side, weighing between pounds and ranging in height from inches. However just like most mixed breeds, their size can vary and can occasionally be out of these ranges. Known for their love of children, these dogs make a great choice for families with young kids. Pug Shih Tzu mixes are perfect for apartment living. They do not tolerate the heat very well. Both parent breeds are ancient breeds that are over years old. Shih Tzus are known for being confident and hard headed, whilst Pugs are known for their easy going, good natured temperament. As a result the Pug Shih Tzu mix is known for having a well balanced temperament and gets along well with everyone and everything. They little dogs just love to play especially with you , so make sure that you set aside time each day to play games with them. Also make sure to provide plenty of toys for them — tugs, squeaky toys and balls tend to be some of their favorites. A quick walk around the block with some play time in the backyard or even inside is enough for this dog. More than anything the Pug Shih Tzu mix is a couch potato and just wants to cuddle with you on the couch. They love to be with their owners so much they suffer from separation anxiety. So if you are going to be away for long hours, having someone stop by to take them for a walk can help to curb the anxiety. One of the downsides is this breed can be very headstrong which can make training difficult more on this later. The good news though is they are not big barkers. They will bark to alert to someone at the door or something out of place, but other than that they tend to be very quiet. This makes them a great option for apartment living. The Pug Shih Tzu mix makes an amazing family dog. They love to play with children and get very excited, just make sure they play gently! They do not require a lot of physical or mental stimulation and do well in most homes. This breed is also excellent for first time dog owners, or even families with children. The biggest care commitment with this dog is their grooming and maintenance. Exercise Requirements A short walk around the block with a few minutes of play at home is plenty for this breed. In general the Pug Shih Tzu mix is a fairly lazy breed, so you do not have to put a lot of running or walking time into them. If you are looking for a hiking companion, this is not the dog for you. This breed should always be walked on leash or in a fenced-in area. These dogs have a tendency to wander and are not very good with recalls, so keeping them on a leash is best for their safety. Number of Walks Per Day: 1. Total Exercise Needed Per Day: 30 minutes. Grooming and Shedding The most intensive part of caring for a Pug-Zu is the grooming. Although the Shih Tzu is considered hypoallergenic, this trait does not always carry over into the Shih Tzu Pug mix. Daily brushing is needed to prevent their coat from tangles. Your dog will need to visit the groomer about every six weeks for a trim. Keep baths to a minimum as this can dry their skin out. Small dogs are also prone to dental issues, so make sure their teeth are brushed one to two times a week. Another thing that you will need to do is clean out their ears weekly to avoid infection. With little planning ahead you could get reimbursed for every vet bill from now on! Feeding and Diet This mix should be fed kibble specifically designed for small dogs — they do not need anything super high in protein. As a puppy it is best to feed them three times a day. Once fully grown switching to two meals a day will work. Remember these dogs are prone to obesity, so make sure not to free fed them or give them lots of of snacks. These dogs can live anywhere from years old. How to Train a Pug Shih Tzu Mix While training this dog you should remember that these dogs are highly food motivated. So using a combination of positive reinforcement and rewarding good behavior is the best method of dog training for them. However these mixes are known for being very stubborn and sometimes hard-headed, so repetition and patience is needed. The best way to avoid this stubbornness is to only train in small bursts of about ten to fifteen minutes — this keeps your dog from getting too exhausted. It is important to lay down rules with them from an early age to make sure that they are well behaved when they are older. Socialization is extremely important as a puppy to ensure they become a well-rounded adult. In general they are known for being very well behaved with children, other dogs and pets. They love strangers so do not expect them to ever be a good watch dog. Fortunately this little dog does not need a lot of mental stimulation. Just some basic obedience training is needed to make sure that your dog listens as they grow older. You can also come up with fun games to play with them. These dogs love almost any game that you can come up with — fetch, tug, you name it, these playful dogs will love it. You can switch to an adult formula when she is 6 or 7 months old. It is best to feed her 1 cup of kibble 3 times a day as a puppy, and then reduce her feelings to 1 cup twice a day feelings when she switches to adult food. She is a little young for treats, but when you are training her to go potty, or wanting to teach her things, I find the best treat is a piece of her own kibble. When she is a little older maybe around 12 weeks, you can give her an occasional treat, we stay away from the store bought treats with lots of additives, or preservative, and you want to stay away from the chicken jerky treats and other treats from China, and milkbones, they have had a lot of recalls on these products, and they have caused many illnesses and deaths due to kidney failure in dogs. We give our guys Wellness soft chews, and the Wellness yogurt and fruit cookies, Fruitables, , and their own kibble. We also give our guys supplements such as we add 1 Tbsp. The flaxseeds also have a significant amount of omega -3 fatty acids. Thus, very helpful in maintaining the thick, glossy coat of your bulldog. The question, however, is should they eat them? The problem is that some treats are loaded with salt, fat, fillers, artificial ingredients, coloring, and, sadly, even more. If, however, you feed them low-quality treats all the time, they will start to suffer from various health problems, including obesity, joint problems, tummy problems, diabetes, and several more. Below are a few ingredients you should avoid when choosing a treat for your English Bulldog. Do your best to avoid treats with these ingredients. Salt Like sugar, salt often goes by other names on the ingredient list, like sodium chloride, iodized salt, and sea salt. Yes, some salt is needed, but not much. Like humans, too much salt can cause various health problems in dogs. Dairy Dairy products, while generally healthy, are also a common cause of food sensitivity. If your English Bully has problems with sensitivity, avoid treats with any dairy in them like cheese and milk. Corn Unfortunately, corn is a cheap meat replacement found in many dogs treat recipes. First, grains can provide some needed nutrients. Also, peas are often used in place of grains, and peas have been linked to diet-associated canine heart disease DCM. Calories Calories are great when your English Bulldog needs some quick energy. Long-term chews usually have the highest calorie count, so give them sparingly to your English Bulldog. What To Look for in Dog Treats for Your English Bulldog Just as there are ingredients you should avoid, there are several you should look for in a good dog treat for your English Bulldog. They include:. Bulldogs, as a sedentary breed, are prone to weight gain. They are also prone to food allergies or intolerance, as well as sensitive stomachs and flatulence! To put it frankly, providing the optimum nutrition for your Bulldog might be difficult. Bulldog Eating Behavior Bulldogs will eat almost anything you put in front of them, but choosing the correct food sources is just as crucial. One of the most crucial aspects of dog training is motivation. People employ several reinforcer methods to produce motivation. Many pet owners, in particular, utilize food because it is simple and convenient. Throughout this article, we will show you the best healthy treats for English bulldogs. Nutrient and Vitamin Requirements Once you have an English bulldog on your home, you will discover that they adore eating. Bananas, lamb, salmon, and beef are the ideal foods sources for your English bulldog. Bulldogs require a minimum of 22 percent protein during development phases and 18 percent protein as adults. When compared to other breeds, English Bulldogs require a lot of protein. And if you have previously or presently own a different breed particularly a smaller one , you may be used to an entirely different sort of diet. Bulldogs require more protein than smaller breeds, but as a general guideline, ensuring your Bulldog takes 1 gram of protein for every pound of bodyweight will guarantee he consumes enough to maintain his lean mass. Best Types of Treats for Bulldogs. When looking for what are good snacks for bulldogs, look for products that do not have a high calorie content. Balancing Treats with Regular Food. Healthy treats are an excellent tool for effectively training your dog. Training your dog is an excellent way to strengthen your relationship with them, keep them cognitively and physically active, and demonstrate to your friends that your dog genuinely listens to you. For example, if your dog requires calories per day, treats should account for no more than 50 calories, with the other coming from their regular meal. Final Recommendations. To summarize, bulldogs enjoy eating flavorful food all day, but you need to keep an eye on what you use to train your dog as well as what they should eat as normal food. Before you begin tossing treats, you must first determine how many calories or kcal your dog need every day. Your veterinarian should be able to supply you with a more accurate number, but this calculator by Pet Nutrition Alliance will give you a sense of what this number may look like. Finally, enjoy watching your baby devour some of the best treats for English Bulldogs shown on this list and continue on your journey to train your dog to become their best version.
