Coat Generally, the Goldmation coat is straight, medium to long, and dense with some iconic spots inherited from the Dalmatian lineage. Therefore, expect your Goldmation to shed a lot, especially during the spring and autumn. You will need to brush your dog at least three times a week to prevent tangling and matting. Nose The nose is black as in the parent breeds. Photo credit: Pinterest Personality Goldmation is a very intelligent, loyal, and friendly dog. These dogs are perfect for active families with kids of all ages due to their energy, kindness, and willingness to play. Goldmation is also capable of protecting his owner. This is where his Dalmatian watchdog side comes into play. You will often see a Goldmation barking at strangers. Goldmations are intelligent dogs, that are willing to please their owners. Therefore, they are quick learners and easy to train. However, high intelligence and social nature also mean they need plenty of mental stimulants, interactions, and challenges to prevent boredom. A bored Goldmation will indulge in a wide variety of unwanted behaviors. The most notable and problematic are barking, howling, and destructive chewing. Health Problems Designer breeds will often be free of the health issues that often plague their purebred parents. However, there is always a possibility that a dog will inherit certain health issues from its parents. Generally, Goldmations are healthy dogs. However, they can inherit a susceptibility to cancers and heart issues from the Golden Retriever side. On the other hand, Dalmatians are prone to deafness, kidney stones , and thyroid issues. Both Goldens and Dalmatians are prone to joint issues such as elbow and hip dysplasia. Therefore, there is a high probability that their offspring will suffer from the same issues. Life Expectancy Researchers have shown that larger dog breeds have a shorter life span than smaller ones. Since Goldmations are large dogs, their life expectancy is on average between 10 and 12 years. Therefore, your Goldmation will need plenty of walks, exercise, and agility training to spend that energy and stay healthy. I'm passionate about building strong bonds with dogs and providing them with all the love and care they deserve. Designer dogs, however, became quite popular in the United States in the s. The golden retriever dalmatian is thought to be one of the first hybrids developed. These designer dogs come from a long lineage of popular established breeds — the Dalmatian and the Golden Retrieve. Golden Retrievers were bred in Scotland in the mids. Their main task was to retrieve downed game from water or land for their hunter-owners. They came to the United States via Canada in .Dalmatians got their name from Dalmatia, a region in Croatia. These dogs have existed in Asia, Africa, and other areas of Europe since ancient times. Throughout history, dalmatians have been guarding sheep, trained to hunt, and were retrievers, performers, and guard dogs running alongside coaches protecting the horses and passengers. Their appearance depends on genetics! However, we do know that this is one adorable breed. The Golden Retriever Dalmatian is a medium to large-sized dog with a well-proportioned body. They usually have a long snout, a somewhat curved tail, and droopy ears. The adult Goldmatian is generally between 19 to 23 inches tall and weighs between 55 to 70 pounds. Their eyes are usually brown or blue, and they have black noses. As mentioned above, it is hard to say precisely what the golden retriever dalmatian will look like. Some are a perfect blend of both parental breeds. This pattern may be clearly visible and distinct, or it can be faint and subtle with just a tinge of the spots on their lighter coat. You never know — up to genetics! But in any case, the Goldmatian is just one of the cutest, most adorable designer dogs you could ever want! This breed will do well with single pet parents or with families. The important thing is that their family is active. This breed is best suited for people with a home with a fenced-in yard for them to run around safely. This is a very active breed with tons of energy; they need lots of exercise to use up all that energy. Also note this designer dog has a high prey drive, and they have a tendency to chase small critters. Therefore, it is crucial to keep this dog on a leash when taking them out for a walk. They LOVE to be with their human family and even get along famously with other dogs in the household. They are fantastic family dogs and get along wonderfully with children of all ages. Goldmatians do not like to be alone. Since this dog is a part golden retriever, they love to be around people. Therefore, they might not be an excellent fit for a family if they will be left alone for long periods of time. Left alone for long periods can lead to destructive behavior, including chewing on things and excessive barking. I know first-hand about separation anxiety with Golden Retrieves. We have a golden mix, and we left him home for less than an hour to run an errand. We lived at the time in a two-bedroom apartment, and we crate-train our dog as a puppy. He was three years old at the time and no longer confined to a crate when we left our home. Who knew that while we were gone, a kid would pull the fire alarm, and the fire department would pull up just as we were returning to our apartment? The alarm was a constant high shriek sound right outside our apartment. Our golden mix was terrified. He chewed a HUGE hole in an oriental carpet my husband had brought back from India while on a business trip! Needless to say, my husband was furious. But who could be upset with our pet? Separation anxiety is real among goldens, and when they become scared, they become destructive. Lesson learned. However, you must put the time into crate training your Goldmatian puppy. And notice I said puppy — it would be next to impossible to retrain an older dog. This will be discussed further along in this article. Another option if you have your heart set on this breed and must leave the house for long periods of time is doggie daycare. Doggie daycare is also an excellent option for your pet to learn socialization skills and how to interact with other people and dogs. Both of the parental breeds of the golden retriever dalmatian are very intelligent, which could make training your Goldmatian challenging since they tend to be a tad bit stubborn. Be consistent with your training and reinforce that YOU are the alpha dog, and your Goldmatian should obey. Remember always to praise and reward when they follow your instructions. There is nothing more satisfying to these dogs than to please their owner. Both of their parental breeds are shedders, so there is no way around this. To keep their coats shiny and looking good, they should be brushed twice a week at a minimum. This will also help prevent tangles and matting from occurring, especially during the two main shedding seasons in spring and fall. In fact, you might feel as though your pet is shedding so much that they will go bald during these times. But have no fear; this is normal. What about bathing? This breed is known to be droolers, and they are very active. Because of their drooling, they can develop a doggy odor, and when this happens, you know it is time for a bath. Usually, baths are needed once amount. Only do this occasionally, as they can dry out their skin. To reduce the doggy odor caused by their excessive drooling, you might find it beneficial to put some towels or lightweight blankets on top of their bedding. Before these start to become smelly, you can toss them in the washer, and this will help keep your Goldmatian smelling fresher longer. Also, make sure you check their ears, nails, and teeth several times a month, preferably weekly. Their ears should be gently cleaned with a soft cloth once a week, which helps prevent the smelly yeast infection that droopy-eared dogs are prone to. You can time this cleaning to coincide with their regular brushing routine, and your pet will think they spent some time at the spa! This also makes a great bonding experience between you and your pet. Their teeth should be cleaned at least once a week. The Golden Retriever Dalmatian mix comes from two very bright parental dogs. Patience is definitely needed here, and you must understand you will never stop their barking; it is only natural to them. Your goal is to control their barking. As mentioned before, Goldmatians are extremely intelligent. One would guess that would mean they are easy to train, and usually, they are, especially since they love to please their owner. However, sometimes they can and do have a strong, stubborn manner. As with both of their parental breeds, the golden retriever dalmatian loves praise and is rewarded for listening and following commands. Therefore, it is essential with training to take a positive approach and give them tons of verbal encouragement, plus a few tasty yummy treats when they have learned and responded appropriately to your instructions. The key to practical training is to be consistent, firm, and fair. Remember, as stated before, socialization is also an essential part of training. Because these dogs are so agile and physically active, they love a physical challenge. They will do well with agility training and other dog sports. In addition, these activities will help tire your dog out. Because these dogs are so intelligent, they will also benefit from mental stimulation training. Here are some examples of mental training to do with your Goldmatian: Interactive Games: such as doggie board games where your dog must complete some obstacles to get a treat or puzzle games where your pet is encouraged to figure out how to get a treat out Hide and seek: tell your dog to sit and stay this is assuming they know these two commands already , and you go and hide and then count to ten and call your dog. Once they find you give them tons of praise and a treat. Playing fetch: this simple activity provides both physical and mental stimulation, and most dogs LOVE playing this game with their owners. Puzzle games: a simple one is a Kong. With a Kong, you fill it with a treat, and your pet must lick, sniff, and shake to dislodge the treat to eat it. And lastly, do not forget crate training. This is very important on so many levels for your dog, no matter their breed. Their crate should be their happy place, a place to sleep, a place to be safe. If you must leave your Goldmatian for extended periods of time, and they have been appropriately crate-trained, their crate becomes a safe place to be while you are away and will keep them safe and out of trouble. If you need to be away for an extended period of time, and your Goldmatian needs to be in their crate, throw in a safe toy like a Kong filled with all-natural peanut butter make sure it does not contain artificial sweeteners as these are deadly to your dog and play some calming pet music. Also remember to provide water. A dispenser that hangs on the side of the crate is an excellent way to keep them hydrated. Once you return, make sure to immediately let your pet out of the crate, praise them, and then take them for a nice long walk to use up their pent-up energy. When you are home, leave their crate door open, and let them wander in and out of their crate at will. The Goldmatian is a high-energy and intelligent breed that needs physical and mental stimulation daily. At a minimum, Goldmatians should get approximately 75 minutes a day of exercise, and at least half of that should be focused and intense. This breed is highly athletic, so you can do various things to meet this daily requirement. You can take them on multiple daily walks, take them running with you, hiking, or swimming. Take them to a dog park to interact with other dogs. Do agility training. If walking is your main go-to activity with them, change your routes and walk at least two miles daily with them. Provide a safe, enclosed backyard space for them to play and explore safely. Please do not leave them alone outside for long, though, or their inquisitive nature might get them into too much trouble! It would be best if you still look for genetic disorders that are more common for Golden Retrievers and Dalmatians. Some minor conditions to be aware of include: Eye Entropion. The breed is a beloved pet in some areas, while others rarely have any around. It is essential to try and find a high-quality breeder who treats their dogs well. It is best to ask for a tour around their facility to ensure that they are the kind of breeder whom you want to support the adoption. They should be willing to show you around any area in which they allow their dogs. Ask to see the veterinary records for the dogs too. It will help you be more prepared as your pup grows older and you can keep an eye out for potential inherited diseases. The goal being to create a smaller-sized pup to the Dalmatian, with less shedding capacity. Major Marjoribanks was searching for a dog as a companion and a guardian of his luxury mansion. However, there is little available precise history concerning this initial crossbreeding. However, Golden Retrievers are crossbred routinely today because of their beautiful golden coats and wonderful even temperament! The History of the Dalmatian The history of the Dalmatian stretches back to the Dalmatia region of Croatia, and are thought to be the result of crossbreeding between various types of Pointers, and a spotted Great Dane — hence the rather large height of the Dalmatian, and the thin, spindly legs. Historically, the Dalmatian has been a guard dog of British aristocrats and has been used as a working dog on aristocratic estates, along with use in the battlefields of World War One and has only in the last century become a family pet worldwide. Dalmatians are a relatively popular pet in the United States, though perhaps less so than in Europe — for reasons that are likely to do with the importation of dogs, rather than the desirability of the Dalmatians. Dalmatians make terrific family pets, though they have a history of being guard dogs and are very protective. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. As English Bulldog Breeders, how do you breed for a healthier Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other bulldog breeders from improving the health of their Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. Olde English Bulldogge Guardian Dog Group The goals and purposes of this breed standard include: to furnish guidelines for breeders who wish to maintain the quality of their breed and to improve it; to advance this breed to a state of similarity throughout the world; and to act as a guide for judges. Breeders and judges have the responsibility to avoid any conditions or exaggerations that are detrimental to the health, welfare, essence and soundness of this breed, and must take the responsibility to see that these are not perpetuated. Any departure from the following should be considered a fault, and the seriousness with which the fault should be regarded should be in exact proportion to its degree and its effect upon the health and welfare of the dog and on the dogs ability to perform its traditional work. Absolute soundness and proper muscle tone is a must. Breeders and judges are advised to always go for healthy and functional moderation, never for exaggeration. History Bulldogs were created for the English sport of bull baiting, practiced from approximately until .By the middle of the s, the sport was no longer legal, and the athletic bulldog quickly began to disappear. Because the bulldog was revived solely for the conformation venue, selective breeding for appearance severely compromised the health and lifespan of this once agile, athletic and happy breed. In a breeding project began using a linebreeding scheme developed by Dr. Fechimer of Ohio State to rapidly achieve a purebred dog. The goal of this project was to return the bulldog to the appearance of the Regency-Period bulldog, now named the Olde English Bulldogge OEB to clearly differentiate the new breed from the modern English Bulldog. Todays Olde English Bulldogge matches the looks of the bull baiting dog of the early s. They are, first and foremost, excellent companions, while also possessing the drive, temperament and agility to perform in numerous working venues as well as being service dogs. The best of both worlds They incorporate the best characteristics of both breeds and make great pets for families, busy professionals, and elderly owners who are looking for a loyal furry friend. What is the French Corgi like? These small, cuddly charmers are loving, devoted, playful, and highly intelligent. They take quickly to training and are happiest when they are the center of your attention! The outcome… The resulting dog is an optimized combination of both its parents and continues to grow in popularity among owners. They are also not prone to as many health issues as Frenchies are. French Bulldog Corgi mixes also have a lovely temperament and make great lap dogs. The breed was originally brought to the UK by Flemish weavers in the 12th Century to guard their livestock and hunt rodents that would otherwise infest their storehouses of grains. Technically, Corgis are part of the Nordic Spitz family of dogs and are primarily characterized by their pointy ears, fox-like face, and their exceptionally high-set tails. However, both types of Corgi are very similar in appearance and temperament. The Frenchie we love today They were originally bred by crossing English Bulldogs and Parisian ratters to create the ionic Frenchie that we all know and love today. Frenchies are popular Did you know that Frenchies are the 1 most popular dog breed according to the American Kennel Club?! Even so, all French Bulldog Corgi mixes weigh between 20 to 35 pounds and stand at inches at the withers. They have a short coat that is usually white and fawn, white and red, white or brindle. You also occasionally get French Bulldog Corgis that are pure tan, sable, or black. French Corgis have a short, stocky body that is compact and muscular with strong fore and hindquarters. However, as with any breed, there are a few potential health conditions that you should be aware of: Hereditary Deafness. The question, however, is often "why? Maybe you acquire a Corgi with a shorter back. It is difficult to imagine that you could get a better companion than either a Corgi or a Frenchie. Of course, it will never stop people from trying. Also going by the name French Corgi, the hybrid is a designer dog that encompasses the undeniable charm of the French Bulldog and the lively and friendly nature of the Corgi. Usually incorporating the Pembroke rather than the Cardigan Welsh Corgi, the French Corgi is a small dog with some modifications of the most exaggerated features of the parent breeds. You are often left with a brindle and white or red and white dog with slightly elongated bat ears, a shortened snout, large prominent eyes, and a squarish head. When the parent dog breeds are vastly different in appearance, it is difficult to predict how the offspring will look. However, you can use your imagination, fitting the two breeds together like a puzzle. As the hybrid's popularity rises, you start getting more live examples. A dog's temperament is even more difficult to visualize even with a purebred lineage. Sometimes a dog's background and original intended purpose will give you a hint of her disposition. What does a Corgi Bulldog Mix look like? You can probably picture a Corgi and a French Bulldog. Both are popular and recognizable breeds. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is short-legged with a compact body, no tail, a foxlike face, and medium-length upright ears. They usually have white trim with a base color of red, black, and tan, red and tan, sable, or fawn. The coat is weatherproof and consists of soft downy underfur and coarse medium-long guard hairs. A French Bulldog, considerably smaller than the English variety, is defined by erect bat ears, a flat face, a large square head, around the cobby frame, and a short or screw tail. Her coat is short with or without a thin undercoat and comes in standard colors of cream, fawn, white, or brindle. Fawn and brindle dogs can have little patches to extensive areas of white. A move has occurred to promote nonstandard or "rare" colors such as black and tan, blue, or lilac Frenchies. Corgis are herding dogs The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is among the smallest members of the herding group. Originating at least as far back as the early s to herd cattle, there are a few theories about the Pembroke. One prevailing belief is that Flemish weavers brought spitz-type dogs with them to Wales. These dogs may have ancestors from central Europe, but they developed in Pembrokeshire. Debate still exists on whether the Pembroke shared its ancestry with the Cardigan Welsh Corgi or developed completely independently. Regardless, Pembrokes had a brief period of interbreeding with Cardigans when they both showed together as two types of one breed in the mids. They officially separated in and shortly thereafter, the Pembroke received recognition from the AKC. Pembroke Welsh Corgis are heelers, driving cattle from behind with a sharp nip to the heels when necessary. Their low build yet extremely agile movements made them ideal for the job. Corgis retain exceptional agility and athleticism despite their dwarfed limbs. Fanciers had created the Toy Bulldog when the standard fell out of favor because of the sudden enforcement of a bullbaiting ban in the early s. Bulldog owners split into multiple factions who either turned to make a better and smaller pet or ventured into pit fighting dogs and rats , which was easier to hide from officials than bulls or bears. Originating in England, the French Bulldog's finishing development occurred when the Industrial Revolution forced crafts workers to Normandy, France in the s. Experts think there were further infusions from local Rat Terriers and the Pug. The Frenchie ended up with a more dome-shaped head and fewer wrinkles than its English counterpart. A frequent companion of prostitutes and madams in France, the French Bulldog soon catapulted to the attention of the wealthy and elite. Frenchies arrive in America in and gained AKC recognition by .Americans insisted that the characteristic bat ear be admitted as the only standard, slowly doing away with the semi-prick rose ears favored by France and England. Many designer dogs have no written records French Corgis likely arose to prominence during the designer craze of the s that continues into the s. They likely found their place when breeders discovered that non-doodle hybrids had desirable traits as well as the Labradoodles and Golden Doodles of the world. Corgi Bulldogs undoubtedly had a designed purpose to be companion dogs. A secondary goal may have very well been to improve the health of either parent breed. Many balanced blends give you a dog with less exaggerated shortening of the muzzles, less bulbous and prominent eyes, a shorter body, and slightly longer legs. However, some dogs can inherit problematic traits from both breeds. Corgi Bulldogs invariably have short legs because the character is dominant. Most crossbreds, however, can thankfully breathe much easier than purebred Frenchies. What is the temperament of a French Corgi? From the French Bulldog, your cross will likely be full of charm, endearing, and affectionate. He will be a showoff and performer, silly in his attempts to capture your attention. The Corgi will contribute an active and intelligent mind with alert, lively, and friendly mannerisms. Are Corgi Bulldogs good watchdogs? Your French Corgi may or may not be a good watchdog. While Corgis announce trespassers and visitors with a sharp bark, Frenchies do not always sound any alarms. You will not have a good watchdog as the hybrid is small, friendly, and approachable to strangers. What is the cross's reaction to kids? Corgi Bulldogs are great with children. They are playful and enjoy a good romp or chase game through the grass. The hybrid may try to herd small children with strong nips to the ankles or lower legs. Always monitor dogs with little kids to quickly intervene in any disputes that may arise. Do Corgi Bulldogs do well with other dogs? Corgis have an innate ability to cooperate with other dogs and usually get along with them fine. French Bulldogs are friendly with everyone and were never bred to possess any aggression. If you socialize your pup well, you should have a well-adjusted dog that gets along with dogs and possibly even cats that live in your household. If you neglect socialization, your pet may develop a "small dog Napoleon syndrome" with aggressive body language that can trigger injurious attacks from bigger animals. Do not leave your Corgi Bulldog unsupervised with much larger dogs and avoid groups of big canids at parks. Are Corgi French Bulldog mixes healthy? Putting aside the debate about whether hybrids are healthier than purebred dogs, Corgi Bulldogs tend to have fewer breathing difficulties than Frenchies. They live 10 to 15 years, comparable to the 12 to 15 years for Corgis and 10 to 14 years for Frenchies. The list of problems your dog could inherit from either breed is extensive. A shorter muzzle does not allow a dog to cool air as effectively as those with a normal snout. Corgi Bulldogs require at least 30 minutes of exercise per day split into two or more sessions. If your dog can breathe normally, she may be happier with up to an hour and a half of activity daily. Intersperse training and mental games into your daily routine and spring surprises and adventures occasionally to engage your dog's mind. How do you feed a French Corgi Mix? Dogs require 25 to 35 calories per day depending upon activity level, age, whether they are nursing or pregnant, and health. Puppies, especially those experiencing fast growth cycles, may need two or three times as much food as an adult. Frenchies are prone to become overweight which exacerbates breathing difficulties and joint ailments. If in doubt, consult with your veterinarian about the amounts and types of dog food. With the convenience of commercial raw and fresh dog food offerings, you have a wide range of healthy choices. Even dry kibble gives you plenty of options such as grain-free and prey-based recipes. You should feed puppies under four months three or four times daily. By six months of age, most dogs can go down to their adult schedule of twice daily. Although not at high risk, any breed of dog can bloat, so you should not feed your French Corgi large amounts of food at a meal. How do you groom your French Bulldog Cross? French Corgis have minimal coat grooming requirements. You should be able to brush your dog's fur once or twice weekly to keep loose hairs down and the circulation in the skin healthy. You should bathe your dog once every couple of months or as needed for soiling. Be sure to keep any facial folds wiped clean. Your dog may not have a perfect scissor bite, so it is important to get your dog used to you brushing his teeth. Clip the nails every six to eight weeks. You can also use a Dremel tool to keep them smooth. Examples Side-by-Side Comparison Here you can clearly see each of the parent breeds of the Corgi Bulldog, a matchup between a red and white Corgi and a brindle French Bulldog. Both of these dogs are puppies, but they show the trim rectangular dwarfed silhouette of the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the compact tank-like frame of the Frenchie. Notice the drastic facial differences. DO you wonder where a rose ear would come from in a mix of these two breeds? Corgi Bulldog This dog is not a far cry from what you ideally want to see in a Corgi French Bulldog mix. The legs are longer in relation to the body than the Corgi's and the body slightly more compact. Otherwise, the dog looks much like a Corgi with deep red and white coloring. The face shows significant muzzle lengthening compared to the Frenchie, but you see a bit of shortening from a typical Corgi snout. The ears are upright, between those of a Frenchie and a Corgi. The tail looks like a Bulldog's as does the coat type. Notice how athletic the dog is. A Frenchie would never be able to perform half of the tricks this one can. Also note the general happiness and friendliness of the dog, albeit a bit nervous at first. Share Tweet The Corgi is often recognized as being one of the favorite dog breeds of the Queen of England. But this compact little dog with short legs has so much more that it should be recognized for. They are smart, stubborn, funny, friendly, playful, and incredibly intelligent. When bred with the Frenchie the result is a French Bulldog Corgi mix that offers all of the positive attributes of both breeds. The appearance of the French Bulldog Corgi mix A healthy male Corgi should weigh between 23 and 31lbs. A healthy female Corgi should weigh between 22 and 29lbs. They are small but compact dogs that can often have high levels of energy, despite what their stubby-legged appearance might otherwise indicate. The standard height for the Corgi is typically no taller than 12 inches at his shoulder. When you combine that with the very similar weight and height of the French Bulldog, you are likely to get a mixed pup that weighs very close to what either one of the two breeds does. The short-legged stature of the Corgi is one of the traits most often passed down to the puppies resulting from a cross-breeding. Your French Bulldog Corgi mix could very well have the typical short legs of his Corgi heritage, or perhaps legs that are just a little bit longer and are a combination of the two. The coats of the mixed breed pups can be found in the same colors and patterns as is seen in either of the breeds. Brindle, tan, white, or anything in between could be seen. The coat itself might be lean a little more toward being soft and smooth versus short and smooth. The personality of the Frenchie Corgi mix The Corgi has been bred to be a herding dog. With this in mind, consider that your French Bulldog Corgi mix could be high energy. While the Frenchie can also be a little bit energetic, when you combine the two you have the potential for a dog that needs to be walked twice a day, and needs to be played with quite a bit during the day in order to keep him healthy and free from being bored. Corgis can be prone to a little bit of stubbornness, but this trait is quickly overshadowed by the sweet playfulness that both breeds will bring with each pup. Your Frenchie Corgi mix is a dog that will get along with everyone, love everyone he meets, and will prove to be ultra-loyal to every member of his family. Training your mixed pup Training is one of the most important things that you can do for any dog. A well-trained dog is one that is not going to display those behavioral traits that cause frustration for their humans. Working with a dog trainer, attending puppy socialization classes, and of course ensuring that your dog gets plenty of positive reinforcement and affection will result in a dog that trusts you, and listens to you. Post navigation. We recommend dry food for the bulk of their diet when fully grown because the crunchy kibble will help keep teeth clean by scraping away plaque. Getting the heart rate up too high can make it difficult to breathe. It responds well to positive reinforcement, so with a little praise, petting, and a handful of treats, your dog will be ready to learn and eager to please. Keep your training session short and hold them at the same time each day. When your pet succeeds, give it a treat and a pat on the head. You should expect it to take several weeks for the command to sink in and become part of their permanent memory. You can also expect occasional resistance to training due to their sometimes-stubborn behavior. Still, positive reinforcement and holding the sessions at the same time each day will help get your dog into a routine. Frequent brushing can help lessen the hair on your furniture, and we recommend a wire bristled brush. You will also need to clip the nails every few weeks or when you hear them clicking on the floor. Manually brushing their teeth with a dog-friendly toothpaste can help reduce the progression of tooth decay. Minor Conditions. Credit: Instagram French bulldogs first showed up around the time of the Industrial Revolution. When families in France wanted smaller companion dogs, bulldogs and terriers were bred together to make a smaller bulldog breed. Because they became popular in France, they retained that name, becoming the French bulldog. The Welsh Corgi was transported to Wales by Flemish weavers. These dogs were brought into Wales to guard livestock and hunt rodents. Eventually, they became a popular breed for companion animals, especially because the royal family of England has Corgis. There is no documentation of the first litter of hybrid puppies, although the two breeds were probably first bred in the last century. Corgi Bulldogs often weigh between 20 and 40 pounds. Male French Corgis tend to weigh about ten pounds more than females when fully grown. They stand between 12 and 15 inches tall. Credit: Instagram Like Corgis, they may have long torsos and short legs. Like Frenchies, they may have flat faces and wrinkled skin. In some cases, French Bulldog Corgi mixes may have both traits. They typically have short, rectangular heads. They usually have sturdy, muscular builds. Their short coats are usually soft and smooth. They may be either single-coated or double-coated. Coat colors include sable, fawn, red, cream, or black. These mixed dogs may also have markings such as piebald, brindle, black patches, white patches, or black mask. Corgi Bulldog Personality Corgi Bulldogs have personality traits from both parent breeds. They tend to be more energetic and vocal than Frenchies and less excitable than Corgis. Credit: Instagram Their friendly personalities make them a good fit for family pets. They are active and energetic and will enjoy playing with children. However, young children should be supervised closely with these dogs. Corgis tend to playfully nip. Their independent tendencies and nipping mean they may not always get along with young children. In general, they get along with other dogs and household pets. Early socialization and training are important if you plan to have other pets with your French Corgi. They may sometimes bark or lunge when meeting new dogs, especially if the other dogs are larger than them. They love to play and have a lot more energy than other French bulldog mixed breeds. Like other Frenchie mixes, they are prone to separation anxiety , and sensitive to cold weather. They learn basic commands relatively quickly. However, they need consistency and constant affirmation during training. Like most dogs, they learn best when positive reinforcement is used during training. Verbal praises and treats can be major motivators for these bright and playful dogs. Training and socialization are necessary if you want your French Corgi to get along with other pets. They need socialization to minimize their nippiness, a trait common in Corgis. While the Corgi Bulldog mix usually has a lower prey drive, Corgis were originally rodent hunters and carry some of that prey drive today. A pound French Corgi will need significantly less food than a pound one. Their diets should consist of mostly protein. They should also have healthy fats, calcium, and vitamins. Since Frenchie mixes are prone to health issues, they may require dietary supplements to help promote healthy skin, muscles, and bones. The right nutrition will help them maintain their high energy and overall health. While Frenchies are less active, Corgis are high-energy dogs that need exercise every day. If you have a French Corgi with a shorter snout, you may need to space out their workouts to give them time to breathe. They can fulfill most of their exercise needs by playing with your family or running around the yard. You may need to keep them indoors more during the summer, since they sometimes struggle to regulate their heat during warmer months. You can learn more about how to keep your Frenchie cool during the summer. Like all Frenchie mixed breeds, they are prone to obesity if their diet is not carefully monitored. Corgi Bulldogs may develop some of the following medical conditions: Brachycephalic syndrome: this is a type of upper airway malformation common to Frenchie mixed breeds. This causes obstructed breathing , which can become labored due to illness or exertion. Deafness: this mixed breed is prone to hereditary deafness, a condition often spotted when the dog is still a puppy. Disc Disease: this breed is prone to disc eruption or disease because of the elongated torso and short legs. Eye problems: progressive retinal atrophy and cataracts are both common conditions for adult Frorkies. Skin problems: red, flaky, and itchy skin is common in French bulldog mixed breeds. Although they face these health concerns, French Corgis life between 12 and 15 years. Since most French bulldogs live between 10 and 12 years, mixing the breed with Corgis can help increase their lifespan. Even though they have shorter coats, they shed their fur year-round, with extra shedding occurring during weather changes. So, you should brush their fur at least twice a week to help promote healthy hair growth and redistribute body oils across their bodies. Learn about what to do to reduce shedding on your dog. They only need to be bathed when they are very dirty. Like other Frenchie mixes, they are prone to skin irritation. When you need to bathe your Corgi Bulldog, use a dog shampoo formulated for sensitive skin to minimize the risk of irritation. The same goes for French Bulldog Corgi mixes. You may spend significantly less if you get your French Corgi from a shelter, although your choices will be subject to the availability at your local shelter. Breeding Frenchies and Corgis can help reduce the health problems common to Frenchies. However, puppy mills and other irresponsible breeding practices can increase the risk of hereditary issues. Ethical breeders will do what they can to promote healthy breeding lines. They tend to have rectangular faces and medium-length snouts, although they can have both flat faces and short legs if they inherit those traits from their parents. Corgi Bulldogs are friendly and energetic dogs that love to spend time with their families. They are typically good with other pets and children, although they may sometimes exhibit some nippiness. They are two of the most popular dog breeds in recent years to develop hybrids. Corgi and French Bulldog hybrids are increasingly becoming more popular among dog owners looking to adopt a dog of smaller stature that can serve as an excellent family friend while also not requiring much exercise or space to thrive. What is a French Bulldog Corgi mix called? The French Corgi usually incorporates the Pembroke Corgi rather than the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and exhibits some exaggerated features of both parents. French Bulldog and Corgi backgrounds As dog breeds have been bred for a specific purpose, their background can significantly impact their temperament, especially after generations of breeding. Corgis were bread for Herding. According to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi lineage, the breed has been traced back to AD and was originally bred for herding purposes. There is a prevailing belief that Flemish weavers introduced their dogs to Wales. There is a possibility that these dogs had origins in central Europe, but their development occurred in Pembrokeshire. As a breed, Pembroke Welsh Corgis have been categorized as heelers. Despite their shorter limbs, Corgis can maintain exceptional levels of agility and athletic ability. Their job is to muster the cattle from the rear, with sharp nips to the heels as necessary. The fact that they have a low build and are extremely agile made them the perfect fit to do the job. The French Bulldog is a companion dog. It is believed that the French Bulldog evolved from a cross between a miniature and toy English Bulldog. When bullbaiting was suddenly prohibited in the early s, fanciers created the Toy Bulldog to replace the standard. During the Industrial Revolution in the s, artisans were forced to move to Normandy, France. As part of this migration, they brought their dogs. This is where the French Bulldog took its final form. The Frenchie had a rounder head and fewer wrinkles than the English Bulldog. It is believed that regional Rat Terriers and Pugs contributed to the further expansion of the breed. Depending on how the breeder crosses the Corgi with the Bulldog, the resulting French Bulldog Corgi mix can range significantly in size. Smaller French Bulldog Corgi mixes will likely resemble the Corgi in size, while larger mixes will more closely resemble the Bulldog. At the most extreme end of the spectrum, a full-grown French Bulldog Corgi mix can weigh 35 pounds and be about 10 inches tall at the shoulder. At the other end of the spectrum, a French Bulldog Corgi mix can weigh between 15 and 30 pounds and be about 8 inches tall at the shoulder. The French Bulldog and the Corgi are both smart, social, and small-sized dogs with many personalities. A dog with a shorter muzzle is less likely to be able to cool air as effectively as those with a longer snout. While exercising, they will have trouble breathing and become overheated. It is recommended that the French Bulldog Corgi Mix be exercised at least 30 minutes per day, split over several sessions. It is advisable to exercise caution in warmer weather, especially in summer. Pros of Owning a French Corgi The French Bulldog Corgi mix will make a great family dog, and many owners who adopt this breed describe it as a friendly and outgoing dog that loves socializing. The Corgi Bulldog mix also has low grooming needs and is a healthy breed that is not prone to many serious health conditions. French Bulldogs are also easy to train and can be good with children, as they are patient and affectionate dogs. French bulldogs are also prone to developing health conditions, including brachycephalic syndrome, breathing problems, eye problems, allergies, hip dysplasia, and skin problems. Corgi Bulldog Mix Appearance The appearance of a French Bulldog Corgi mix can vary greatly because dog breeders can use different methods to create this breed. For example, breeders can use a full-sized Corgi to cross with a Bulldog, or they can use a miniature Corgi to cross with a Bulldog. If a full-sized Corgi is crossed with a Bulldog, the resulting French Bulldog Corgi mix will look like a shorter and stubbier version of the Corgi. On the other hand, if a miniature Corgi is crossed with a Bulldog, the resulting French Bulldog Corgi mix will look like a more athletic version of the Corgi. Coat Two types of hair lengths are available for Corgis: shorter and longer hair. The great thing for those who adore short-haired dogs is French bulldogs generally have short, sleek coats. The rare Corgi long-hair trait should not appear in your mixed breed dog if it is a French bulldog or Corgi. In addition to white, cream, and fawn, French Bulldogs can come in various colors. The following colors can also be seen on them: White markings. Photo: Instagram Like most designer breeds, the Bulldog Corgi will borrow its physical characteristics from each parent breed. It will likely be short and stout, like the French Bulldog, but may have the longer body of the Welsh Corgi. Its head will be wedge-shaped and may have bat-shaped or rounded ears like the Welsh Corgi. Like most hybrid breeds, physical appearances are left to chance and how their genes mix. The Pembroke Corgi is notorious for its friendly, happy-go-lucky nature. In comparison, the French Bulldog is renowned for being cute as a button but slightly aloof and wary of strangers. This makes for a cautiously adorable mixed breed. The Bulldogs were brought to France by English families from Nottingham, who had resettled there following the Industrial Revolution — lace workers, mostly. The French Bulldog was one of the most popular dogs in the United States when it arrived in the latter half of the 19th century. French Bulldogs are known for being friendly, loving, and curious dogs with an independent streak. Their small size and reputation as low-maintenance dogs make them perfect for elderly owners and great family pets. Extra training may be necessary, although positive reinforcement as a training method is preferred to harsh admonishment. French Bulldogs were originally bred in England in the 19th century from English Bulldogs. They were brought to France by English lace workers from Nottingham. Once there, they were crossbred with French rat terriers — Pinscher-like small dogs to create the modern French Bulldog. Before that, most owners of French Bulldogs liked to keep them as purebred dogs due to them being held in high esteem among high society. However, during the late 20th and early 21st centuries, French Bulldogs were caught up in a crossbreeding craze that swept the United States. Their Flemish owners first used these small, active dogs as herding dogs, though eventually, they were replaced by larger, stronger dogs. Welsh Corgis became companion pets over time, splitting the breed into two distinct types — the Pembroke Welsh the original Corgi breed and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. For several centuries, Pembroke and Cardigan Welsh Corgis were shown and classified as a particular breed. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi found favor and fame within the Royal Household of the United Kingdom — Queen Elizabeth II kept over thirty Corgis during her reign — she would often be seen walking her high-energy dogs around the grounds of Buckingham Palace. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi would fade into relative obscurity in the United Kingdom and the United States — where both breeds would be classified together until , when the American Kennel Club recognized them as separate breeds. Today, all over the Western world, both the Cardigan Welsh Corgi and Pembroke Welsh Corgi are incredibly popular family pets, especially among elderly owners. In the United States, Corgis are incredibly popular — with the Pembroke often falling inside the top ten most popular dogs over the last ten years. This is likely due to their distinctive features, such as an elongated body, double coat, and rounded ears. Pembroke Welsh and Cardigan Welsh Corgis are active breeds with lively personalities. Corgis are the right size and shape for elderly owners and those living in apartments. Corgis, whether Pembroke Welsh or Cardigan Welsh, are wonderful dogs for any owner no matter their living situation, family dynamic, or age. How Did Corgis Come About? Welsh Corgis were first brought to the Welsh countryside by Flemish weavers, who relocated to Wales from modern-day Belgium around A. These dogs have a lineage stretching back to the 12th century, making them one of the oldest British dog breeds. The Corgi has a long and, unfortunately, unwritten history of crossbreeding. Given that this is an ancient breed, it is highly likely that the Corgi was crossbred many times throughout the years without it ever being recorded. Our records indicate that the Corgi was crossbred with several different dogs before the s when crossbreeding of dogs became incredibly popular in the United States. One of the most important parts of owning a dog is ensuring that it is a temperamental match to your family unit. If you are an active, outdoorsy family, it only makes sense to get an active, outdoorsy dog, like a Husky or a Rottweiler. However, if you are homebodies, getting a dog that will be more comfortable around the home makes more sense. Usually, smaller dogs like Shih Tzus, Pugs, and terriers are more comfortable spending their days at home. Getting a dog that differs from you and your family temperamentally could mean pouring time and money into extensive training for your dog or even being forced to re-home the animal. This means more suffering, trauma, and stress for you, your family, and the dog. The Bulldog Corgi is renowned for being a friendly, pleasant breed with a mixed temperament. You can expect your Corgi French Bulldog mix to be amiable, though they may be slightly shy initially. A Bulldog Corgi will typically weigh between 25 and 35 pounds. The average height of a Corgi French Bulldog mix is between 12 and 16 inches tall. These include: Cocker Spaniel. COM Frenchie Corgi Mix coat colors and types French Corgis have short coats that are soft and smooth that can either be single or double-coated. Coat colors vary within the two purebreds. Corgis can be red, sable, fawn, or tri-colored with either a black-masked head or red-masked. French Bulldogs also come in a variety of colors: cream, fawn, or black. Possible markings include brindle, piebald, black mask, black patches, or white patches. Corgis tend to be energetic and vocal, while Frenchies have a low excitability factor. Thus, a French Corgi offspring might turn out to be a well-mannered dog with a friendly nature that likes to seek attention from his owners. Do Corgi and French Bulldog Mix make great family pets? Yes, Corgi and French Bulldog Mix do make great family pets. Corgi mixed with French Bulldog is a great addition to any family, especially with small children since they are quite active. They could also get along with other dogs and pets, as long as they are socialized early. Save Big On Dog Essentials! Welcome to our pack! Is French Bulldog Corgi Mix affectionate dogs? Yes, the French Corgi is an affectionate dog which he got from his Frenchie parent. They have a reputation for being quite a lap dog that loves to cuddle and is very eager to please their owner. French Bulldog Corgi Mix training French Corgi is fairly easy to train because of their intelligence. It just takes patience and consistency plus a dose of positive reinforcements to make them listen. French Corgis with shorter snouts should be allowed to rest a couple of times due to breathing issues. A good rule of thumb is to split their exercise sessions into two to avoid this problem. Special care should also be given if it is too warm outside which could lead some to suffer from heatstroke. During cooler seasons, if you allow your French Bulldog Corgi Mix to roam freely in your backyard, make sure your backyard is fully fenced. Wireless dog fences work in all types of terrains, whether you live on a hill, mountain, or grassland. Before you do go ahead and install a wireless dog fence, be sure to install an electronic dog door first. Having an automatic dog door allows your canine friends to head out to the backyard during the day and come back into your house on their own. Many dog owners that have installed an electronic dog door for their four-legged friends love that they no longer need to close and open the door every time their dogs need to head out or come back in. Your furry companions can still catch some sun and fresh air during the day even if you work at the office. You can program it and set curfew hours so that they stay safe indoors at night. They are especially suited for small apartment living because of their size, but you will have to take them out for their daily walks to avoid boredom and anxiety. Otherwise, excessive barking will be an issue with your neighbors. Brushing several times weekly with a slick brush is needed to take out any dead skin and hair and distribute the natural oils throughout the body.

The range of amounts is based on the activity of your Golden for the day, either low, moderate, or high level of activity. Golden Retrievers should have scheduled times to eat daily. The scheduled times will help them with their energy levels and keep them healthy. You can schedule their eating times as to what works best for your schedule. For example, feeding them before you leave for work and then when you get home. As a puppy, they will eat three times a day, so you will need to find times in those first few months to feed them more often. When they are an adult or senior, the scheduling of feeding times will be easier because they will only eat twice daily. For a Golden Retriever puppy, the best feeding schedule is once in the morning, noontime, and in the evening. For example, you could feed their first meal at am, lunch at noon, then dinner at pm. Planning their mealtimes around your mealtimes will often make it easier for you and the puppy. Make sure to give them plenty of time after eating to got to the bathroom a couple of times before heading to bed. Hopefully, this will help them sleep for a longer period. After about six months, your Golden Retriever can go down to two daily feedings. This usually occurs once in the morning and once in the evening. They can usually last about 12 hours between meals. If it goes past 12 hours, they could become nauseated. Golden Retrievers can experience food allergies often caused from proteins in dairy or meat products. If your dog experiences symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or itching they may have a food allergy. They warn that feeding dogs any raw animal-source protein could cause illness because it has not gone through a process to remove harmful pathogens. However, a raw diet can be healthy if you are willing to go through the extra cleaning processes of the meat. This is a lot of work and difficult to do correctly and safely. We do not recommend it without expert veterinary help. Before starting a raw diet with your Golden, be sure to consult a veterinarian. Find one that is familiar with raw foods and can help with the proper handling of the foods. If you work hard to make sure your homemade foods are rich in the vitamins and minerals that a dog needs, then it might work for your Golden Retriever. It takes a lot more time to find recipes and make sure it has all the nutritional value of a store-bought dog food. If you are willing to research expertly formulated recipes internet is making it easier to do this , and take the time to cook for your golden then go for it! Consulting your veterinarian is a must before starting any homemade diet. A veterinary nutritionist should also review your plan before starting. Feeding your Golden Retriever table food is not the best practice but a small amount of dog healthy table food is fine. Some example table foods that are healthy for them are carrots, blueberries and plain yogurt. Just be aware that feeding them too much table food can throw their entire diet out of whack. They may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals like they do from their dog food. Conclusion Making sure your Golden Retriever is getting the right foods at the right amounts will help them live their best life. There are many choices of foods with all the right ingredients. Be sure to choose one that works best for you and your Golden. Consult with your veterinarian on which food will bring the most nutritional value to the health of your Golden Retriever. If your Golden is experiencing any health issues related to changing foods, visit your veterinarian. If this article was helpful, please consider sharing this post on Facebook with the button below! You now have a beautiful, smart, and loyal dog who will love you for life. To make sure they grow into a healthy and happy companion, you need to feed them the right amount of food. At months old, which is usually when they are ready to leave their mother, a golden retriever puppy should be eating 3 cups of dog food divided into three meals per day. This is based on a typical large-breed puppy food. Different brands will give a feeding guide on their packaging. However, how much and how often to feed your golden retriever will keep changing during this time of rapid growth. Golden Retriever Puppy Feeding Timeline Image Credit: PxHere All puppies are different as are the foods, but some general guidelines for feeding your golden retriever during their first year are: 0—6 weeks: A golden retriever puppy can start eating solid food when they are 3—4 weeks old. Give them a total of 3 cups of dog food per day by their third month, 3 to 4 cups by the time they are 6 months old. The AKC recommends waiting until large breed puppies are at least 12 months old before switching them over to adult dog food and more likely 18 months. The amount will depend on their weight and activity level, but a rough guide is 1—2 cups per meal. Image Credit: Kinek00, Shutterstock Large breed puppies like golden retrievers should eat three to four small meals a day for the first 3—6 months of their lives. Smaller portions spread throughout the day are easier on their tummies and help prevent bloat, a serious condition that can be deadly for dogs. It also helps them maintain their energy level throughout the day. Puppy food has more calories and fat to support their growth, as well as extra vitamins and minerals for their developing immune and nervous systems and bones. The protein source matters, too. Puppies need animal-based proteins like chicken, beef, or lamb for their growing muscles. Choose a Large Breed Formula: Large breed puppies grow quickly, which means they need extra support for their bones and joints. Formulations for large breeds contain the correct calcium and phosphorus ratio for strong bones and glucosamine and chondroitin for healthy joints. They can help you choose the right food for your puppy based on their age, weight, and activity level. But puppies need to be fed on a schedule to prevent them from overeating and becoming overweight. How do you know if your puppy is getting enough to eat? After that, their growth will start to slow down. He Has a Healthy Appetite: A healthy puppy is interested in food and eager to eat. He Has Plenty of Energy: A well-fed puppy is full of energy and ready to play. Make the most of mealtime with these tips: 1. It also helps other aspects of puppy training, such as potty training and crate training. Image Credit: Alena Marchuk, Shutterstock This means leaving food out all day for them to graze on whenever they want. Leave food down for 10 minutes and then pick up what is not eaten. If they have not eaten anything, offer it again in an hour. Slow them down by scattering their kibble around the bowl, using a puzzle feeder or snuffle mat. This will help them learn to eat slowly and enjoy their food more. If your puppy is not drinking enough water for your liking, try adding a bit of broth to their bowl to make it more appealing and help them stay hydrated. Resist the Urge to Sneak Them Table Scraps Puppies are experts at giving those big, soulful eyes that make it hard to say no. But resist the temptation to give them table scraps or human food. Aside from teaching them bad manners, it can also lead to health problems, like obesity. A lot of human foods are not safe or healthy for dogs. For instance, garlic and onions are toxic to dogs. Oily food can upset their stomach, and carbs add a lot of calories. This helps them learn that mealtime is a specific time and place and not something that happens all over the house. Let Your Puppy Eat in Peace. This includes other pets in the house and small children who might want to bother them or try to steal their food. Otherwise, meals can become a stressful experience for your puppy instead of a happy one. Conclusion Feeding your golden retriever puppy the right amount of quality dog food will establish a strong foundation for their health and happiness. In addition, make mealtimes more meaningful by turning them into lessons and bonding moments between you and your dog. The puppy phase is over before you know it, so enjoy it while it lasts! Read the full disclosure here. Being a large and energetic dog, your golden retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a golden retriever feeding chart. Knowing how much to feed your golden retriever is always tricky but essential for their well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your goldie. Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. Do you have a golden retriever puppy? How did you determine what and how much to feed him? Please leave your comments in the section below. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months. There is also info on how to keep your puppy and your adult at his or her optimum weight. Scroll down to find growth charts to make sure your puppy is growing at the proper rate and is within the right weight range for his age. If you are looking for information on what to feed, go to How to Choose a Dog Food. Unlike with human children, a puppy that is overfed will grow too fast before they grow too fat. A good example is where a smaller puppy at 10 weeks was overfed and his growth was compared to a puppy that was correctly fed. The growth of your puppy needs to be controlled. General Guidelines for Puppies Below are some general guidelines on how much to feed puppies. Most dog food bags suggest feeding too much. Increase to about 3 cups a day by 5 months for boys and by 6 months for girls. Golden Retrievers at this age are supposed to look lanky and all Golden Retrievers act like they are starving when fed the correct amount. If left to eat as much as they want, they will all grow too fast. In the wild, dogs do not have unlimited access to eat as much as they want. They work for their food. Caloric Needs Greatly Decrease at About a Year When puppies reach about months, their caloric needs begin to decrease. Some males might need 4 cups if active and are fed a less expensive food. Make sure you take into consideration the number of extra calories being fed as treats. You should be able to feel their ribs, but not see them even when the dog is wet. If you can see the ribs, increase their food. Decrease the food if you cannot feel them. I always tell people that it is better to underfeed than to overfeed, especially when feeding puppies. Weight Range Charts Following are charts of how puppies should generally grow in weight. Keep in mind that very few puppies need to be at the top of these ranges and if you cannot feel ribs, your dog is overweight even if she is in this weight range. If your dog is still a puppy and she is over these weight ranges, you are feeding her too much. Female Golden Retriever Weight Chart Here is a chart of how girls should generally grow in weight: 2 Months — pounds.

In a recent article, a licensed professional counselor for more than twenty-five years, explained how owning a Lab can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children. Here is an excerpt from her article: Regular dog-walking increases social interaction for children—especially those who have just moved to a neighborhood and are feeling homesick for their former home. A child who might not want to go out into the neighborhood alone, feels that he or she has a purpose in walking the dog, and therefore can face unfamiliar faces or places more easily than when alone. New Feature 7 dapper hairstyles for your poodle Your poodle is an elegant dog that deserves to be taken care of with impeccable style. The poodle's coat is its most distinguishing feature, and it's essential to keep it looking its best. Grooming is key, and a good haircut can make all the difference! As your dog's fur grows out, it can become tangled and unruly, making for a frustrating appearance. Your poodle is an elegant dog that deserves to be taken care of with impeccable style. There are many different styles of haircuts a poodle can have, and it can be tough to decide which one is right for your pup. It can be hard to know where to start with so many options available. Don't worry; we're here to help! In this article, we'll take a look at seven trendy hairstyles your poodle can rock on his walk. The Lion Cut Let's start with one of the most popular poodle haircuts of all, the lion cut. Sometimes referred to as the "puppy cut," this hairstyle takes advantage of your poodle's long fur to give them a mane-like appearance. The dog's limbs are left hairless, except for a pompom around the tail, front and rear paws. A perfect look for poodles who want to show off their luxurious locks! This hairstyle will last a while since the short hairs on your poodle's face and body will help prevent matting. You should still brush your pup regularly to keep his coat clean and healthy! The Puppy Cut Another popular haircut for poodles and other small dogs like the Yorkshire Terriers is the "puppy cut. While the fur looks a little longer around the face, the haircut mimics a human infant rather than a furry animal. With this cut, your pup will feel extra comfortable as he goes about his day! While many owners opt for this style as it doesn't require as much maintenance as other cuts, it's easy to get tired of the same look over time. Your poodle will still need regular brushing to remove tangles and maintain his healthy coat. Teddy Bear Cut Do you love the look of a teddy bear? The teddy bear cut is another popular choice for poodle haircuts. It's an adorable style that looks kind of like your pup has a bushy mane! This technique leverages the poodle's tiny round eyes and creates the illusion of a furry face. The hair should be cut uniformly at mid-length with a rounded shape to the top of the head. It's important not to cut the body fur too short, as we need the poodle's curls to be seen clearly for this cut. The fur around your pup's paws is left untouched, so it appears thick and full, giving your poodle the appearance of having tiny bear paws! These cuts are extremely popular with older dogs who won't have to worry about frequent brushing or bathing. Summer Cut Although you want your poodle to look cute, you also want them to be comfortable! In the summer, it's hot and humid, and your pup will thank you for cutting his hair shorter. The summer cut is an excellent choice for those sweltering days. In this style, all of the hair on your poodle's body is trimmed very short, except for a small tuft around the tail and large pompoms around the legs. This style is easy to maintain and will help your pup stay comfortable in the summer heat. Dutch Cut Known for its frequent appearance in dog shows, the dutch cut is a great choice for poodles that want a unique look. This creates a "Mohawk" look that is sure to turn heads! The tail can also be left long or cut short to complement your pup's look. The face and paws are the only parts of the body shaved, so you get a little bit of extra grooming time! This cut requires regular brushing to keep your poodle's coat clean and tangle-free. English Saddle Cut The English saddle cut is a popular choice for poodles with longer coats. This haircut is similar to the dutch cut, but it explicitly leaves more hair on the top of your poodle's head. The face and legs are also shaved, but a little more fur is left on the body to create an overall rounded look for this cut. This cut is great-looking but will require regular brushing and bathing to prevent mats from forming. Short Cut This is a prevalent choice for poodles with shorter hair, as it is low-maintenance and easy to groom. In this style, all of the hair on your dog's body is trimmed short, except for the ears. The fur around his face and paws is also shaved short, giving your pup a clean, polished look. This style is perfect for owners who want their dogs to look neat and tidy with minimal effort! Although this style doesn't require as much grooming as other styles, it's still necessary to brush your poodle regularly as the fur grows back. Things To Know Before Grooming Your Poodle Now that you know a little bit about the different types of poodle haircuts, there are a few things to keep in mind before you get started. All poodles require regular brushing Regardless of the style of haircut you choose. Brushing helps to remove excess hair and keep your poodle's coat healthy. It also helps to stimulate blood flow to the skin, which is important for natural oil production. Be sure to give your pup a good bath before grooming him, It would be best to wash your dog too often, but bathing him before grooming will help remove loose fur and leave your poodle's coat soft and shiny. A lot of groomers also recommend giving your pup a good brush after bathing to remove any excess hair, as it can clog drains or just be tough to clean up. Grooming should be a fun experience for your dog Please don't force your poodle to do anything they don't want to! Teaching them that grooming is a positive, relaxing experience will help the process go by more quickly and smoothly. Start grooming early If your dog is still a puppy, it might be a good idea to introduce him to the grooming process early on. This will help him get used to the sights, sounds, and smells of a groomer's salon, and he'll be more likely to cooperate when it's time for his actual haircut. We recommend sending your dog to a professional groomer for his haircut. This will ensure that your pup gets the best possible cut and that you don't accidentally cut him too short or leave any bald patches. Most groomers offer various services, so be sure to ask what they include in their price. Generally, a groomer will begin by bathing your dog and then trimming his nails, cleaning his ears, and starting to cut the hair according to your specifications. The process will continue with a blow-dry, and then your pup will be ready for his final trim. Poodles are known to have a lot of hair, so it can take a long time to groom them completely. You should expect the process to take up to two hours or more. You should consider many factors when choosing a groomer, including experience, pricing, and location. Lion cut The lion cut is probably the best known and most extravagant of all the poodle haircuts. The dog's limbs are hairless, with only a pompom around the front and back paws. The tail should be rounded off and the chest, stomach and head should be left with hair. It is the most widely used haircut in competitions and dog shows where is is also known as the Continental cut. The lion cut's elaborate style makes it impressive, but also takes a lot of time and effort not to mention experience to get right. There are other cuts on dogs called the lion cut, such as one for the Shih Tzu , but they will look different according to the specific breed. Image: National Geographic 2. English saddle cut The English cut is very similar to the lion cut. The difference lies in an additional pompom on the hind legs, and the pelvic area being left at the same length as the chest. It still shares the long ears and tightly wound curls on the body. Both are considered some of the most popular Poodle haircuts among groomers. Image: poodleforum 3. Dutch cut The Dutch cut is one of the most popular in dog contests and expositions. Unlike previous styles, this one is for those who are looking for a uniform style with no differences in length of the dog's coat. It's notable above all for the tail ending in a cute pompom. Image: poodleforum 4. Modern cut The modern cut for poodles is probably the most suitable for owners who love following recent trends and enjoy watching canine beauty competitions. This is also known as the Scandinavian cut or European cut in some sectors, especially in the United States of America. It seeks to achieve a careful and professional finish, without being as exaggerated as the aforementioned styles. It is an aesthetic cut, yet at the same time it is very natural. It follows the shape of the body, emphasizing the ears and tail as much as the head. This is a very trendy cut for Miniature Poodles, and it isn't difficult to work out why. This haircut really makes your poodle look like a puppy. This style doesn't aim to achieve a defined or sharp-looking finish. On the contrary, the fur should look natural and fresh. The American Kennel Club claims there should be a pompom on the end of the tail. It is another of the most popular Poodle haircuts. Image: temporary-secretary 6. Summer cut Many dog owners wonder if it's bad to give their dogs a haircut during the summer. Not all dogs should follow the example of the Poodle, which is a breed that adapts perfectly to different haircuts and styles. Summer is a hot period that makes your beloved poodle get dirtier than usual - especially if you take it to the beach or go for a walk in the woods. Therefore, giving it a summer cut is a good idea: You will help to keep it cool while achieving some interesting aesthetic finishes, as shown below. Winter Poodle cuts tend to leave more hair on the dog to help insulate them from the cold. Image: poodleforum. Cupcake cut This haircut is not very well known, possibly because some people think it provides a strange look once it is done. The cupcake cut is notable for leaving the ears absolutely rounded as a result of being thoroughly styled. Not all styles will involve Poodle face cuts to be so dramatic, but we think it is quite stylish. This Poodle cut is also notable for the shape of its head - which ends in a point - which bears a clear resemblance to a delicious muffin. Image: huxtablethepoodle. Teddy bear cut The teddy bear cut is increasingly popular among long-haired dog breeds. This finish must be done with scissors, and it requires hands with experience in styling poodles. The hair should be left mid-length so that the poodle's curls can be seen clearly. This gives a sweet and rounded finish which makes it look like a bear, as the name suggests. Make sure you know how often to bathe a poodle in order for their fur to look gorgeous at all times. Image: yiral 9. This style can work for any type of Poodle, but is particularly common with Standard or Miniature Poodles. Its defining feature is that it leaves the legs hairy and cylinder-shaped. The body hair, on the other hand, is cut shorter, which accentuates the density of the leg hairs. The head and ears have a rounded finish. Image: najupets .Short cut While it's not very common to see a short-haired poodle, it remains an aesthetic option that will avoid knots, tangles and dirt building up in its coat. This Poodle cut may be a good option in warmer countries. It is also a good option for those who can't go to the dog stylist as often as they would like to. This style can work just as well on a Toy Poodle as it will a Standard Poodle. However, you will need to bear in mind that it may cause the dog to become cold. Either avoid this cut in cold climates or winter months. If you still prefer a shorter cut, ensure you have a doggie jacket for them to stay protected. Image: notastandardpoodle-gregg. The problem is there is no standardized style guide for cutting a Poodle's hair. In different countries, regions and even individual dog groomers , there is debate over the correct name for some of the terms. This can understandably cause confusion for groomers. Clients may come in with a specific idea of how they want their Poodle cut, but are unable to explain the style to the groomer. The best thing for you to do is to decide on what you want before hand and locate a picture of the Poodle cut you want. You can even take this article with you and decide which type of haircut will best work for your dog. Relying on the name of a certain Poodle cut may cause confusion or frustration, so it is best to be on the safe side. Send us a photo of your dog! Having such unique and versatile fur means there are countless poodle haircuts for you to choose from, and a professional groomer can give your poodle a makeover with a hairstyle that best matches her personality and lifestyle. With so many options available, learn how your poodle can look like anything from a plush toy to elegant royalty! Teddy Bear Cut The teddy bear cut is a popular trim for poodles and other long-haired breeds. With this look, your poodle has longer hair on her face for a soft, rounded "teddy bear" appearance, and the rest of the fur on her body is cut at a shorter, uniform length throughout. Talk about cuddly cuteness! Summer Cut Because poodles have a single coat, they can enjoy the luxury that comes with it: the summer cut. Known as one of the most low-maintenance poodle haircuts, the summer cut is a practical haircut option that keeps your poodle's fur short so she stays comfortable in hot weather. So if you're looking to cut your hair to beat the heat in the summer, you and your poodle can rock shorter hairdos together! Puppy Cut No matter your poodle's age, you can seemingly turn back time with the puppy cut. Also a popular choice among poodle parents, the puppy cut is a simple, natural-looking trim that leaves your dog with an evenly cut length, typically 1 to 2 inches, all over. This is a highly modifiable look, so consult your groomer for a length that best fits your and your dog's preference and lifestyle. Continental Cut The continental cut is a glamorous and traditional hairstyle often worn by poodle show dogs. With this look, your poodle's face, throat, feet, and part of the tail are shaved. This look is characterized by full hair on the rib cage and chest, pom poms of fur on the tail, ankles, and hips, as well as a banded topknot on the head. German Trim Looking for a haircut that looks fancy but not too fancy? The German trim uses the power of angles to give your poodle a sharp profile. The hair on your furry friend's legs is left long, while the hair on the body and ears is cut short. This is a great option not only if your poodle is more active but also if your pup is prone to ear infections or ear matting. Modern Cut The modern cut is an elegant hairstyle that combines aesthetics with your poodle's natural features. This cut keeps the hair on the body short, accentuating your poodle's shape. The fur on the head, ears, and tail is left longer to create a fluffy appearance. When your dog has such curly, coarse locks, you may wonder how many trips to the groomer you and your poodle may be making. Poodles and poodle-crosses also go through a coat change in the first year of life, so they need to be groomed more often," says Danna Alexander, owner of Prestige Dog Grooming School. To keep mats and tangles at bay, it's best to brush your poodle at least two to three times a week. Toy poodle haircuts aren't off limits for miniature and standard poodles, just as standard poodle haircuts aren't off limits for miniature and toy poodles. While any poodle can sport any style, there may be common options you'd like to choose from. Because there are various names for different types of poodle haircuts, make sure to bring your groomer a photo of the haircut you'd love your pooch to have. Was this page helpful? This will be good practice for later on — for both of you! Yes, haircuts are essential for Poodles. Their thick, long, curly coats are prone to tangling and trapping debris. When will my Poodle puppy need haircuts? Then, at around four months old, they will shed their puppy coats and start to grow out their rougher adult coats. Frequency As a general rule, Poodles should have their coats clipped every weeks once their adult coats grow out, whatever your desired length. This is because they grow so quickly and can become matted just as fast! What equipment should I use? There are three main types of dog grooming scissors; straight scissors, curved scissors, and thinning shears, and they all perform slightly differently. Straight grooming scissors are a multi-task tool, they have straight blades for general, basic grooming, creating straight lines in the coat, and adding the finishing touches to haircuts. Curved dog grooming shear has a curved blade that can be used to fine-tune and shape specific areas of the coat, such as the paws and hindquarters. Thinning shears have a cutting edge on one blade and teeth on the other, and there are also double thinners that have teeth on both blades. They are designed to remove lots of hair in even sections for a natural finish, and they can also be used to blend out the harsh lines from clippers and texturize the coat. Or, if you just need something for the occasional touch-up between visits to the groomer, a simple pair of electrical motor clippers will do just fine. Electric motor clippers are also good for keeping short coats short. You should also be aware of the types of blades that come with clippers. The higher the number of the blade, the more hair that it will remove. Or, you can get guards that fit a single blade to customize the length, which is a lot more convenient. Start by showing them the equipment and getting them used to the sight and sound of it before you cut any hair. Reward them just for being around it and then try cutting a small section of hair. If they react well, reward them again, and then do another section. Keep rewarding them as you go and again after the haircut is finished. Do it in a well-lit, comfortable part of the home that your pup can stand up in. Once you get them into a routine — keep it up! Work your way down the legs first, then from the neck to the hindquarters, or vice versa, and then the tail. Take care with the feet, underside, and head, shielding their eyes from falling fur. Use long strokes and go from the neck down to the back legs. How to deal with grooming anxiety If your pup is afraid of the scissors or clippers, take it really slowly and try to make it an enjoyable experience. You can do this by breaking up the haircut into smaller sessions to make it less stressful and taking breaks in between each one. Give your dog lots of praise and a reward every time you take a break and ask another family member to comfort them during the haircut. You can start brushing your Poodle from any age. To brush them, simply go in the direction of hair growth using short strokes. Hold the fur at the base with your free hand to remove knots, and use a mat remover for any stubborn mats. Bathing a Poodle puppy As for bathing, you should give your Poodle pup their first proper bath at months old to help them shed their puppy coat, unless they get seriously dirty before that. However, you can give your pup a bath any time after weeks of age to get them used to the sensation, but avoid overbathing them, as this will strip the fur of its natural oils and make it dry and brittle. Once they have their adult coats, your Poodle pup will need a bath once a month. You can even buy shampoo that is designed especially for Poodle coats. To give your Poodle a bath, lather up their wet fur with the shampoo, massage it in, leave it for as long as directed on the bottle, and rinse thoroughly. Follow up with conditioner if necessary. Life Expectancy Breed Facts Poodles were originally bred in Germany as hunting dogs who worked with their owners in retrieving waterfowl. The Poodle is widely known to be the most intelligent dog breed in the world. They train with ease and enjoy one on one engagement with their human best friend. There are three types of Poodles that the American Kennel Club recognizes. The most common and well-known is the standard Poodle, followed by the Miniature Poodle, and then the Toy Poodle. Poodles are social and outgoing dogs that tend to have a warm demeanor. They are mentally alert and very observant of their surroundings. Poodles have a very eager-to-please personality and enjoy the praise they receive after mastering a new trick. This breed is an exceptional family dog and gets along well with children and other animals in the home. They also easily adjust to apartment-style or conventional-style homes. It comes in nearly one dozen colors which include white, black, apricot, cream, and brown to name just a few. This makes routine grooming very important. Using a pin brush, gently brush its fur and work out any knots. A bi-weekly bath is also suggested, which will keep him looking and feeling his very best. Poodles younger than four months in age should be provided with four meals a day. When they reach five months in age, they do best with three meals per day. At six months old, they should have two meals per day spaced apart in twelve-hour intervals. Poodles also require thorough and routine teeth cleaning. But food labels can be a little vague and confusing, so below is an explanation of what some of these terms mean, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC. There is one caveat though. For instance, flaked corn, ground corn, and kibbled corn could be sprinkled in an ingredient list and not be listed as the first few ingredients, but in reality, if you were to add them all up they are all corn, after all , you might find that this food is made mostly of corn. The same goes for chicken, chicken meal, and chicken byproduct. Meat vs. Meat Meal vs. The quality of these ingredients can vary widely, so be sure to talk to your vet about this and choose a reputable brand of food. Below are a few examples: Obesity. During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too small and lethargic for a puppy his age about 8 weeks at the time , and he recommended we feed him a little more. As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies. For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old. Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy? Dogs have sensitive stomachs so if you want to switch foods, you need to do it slowly. You should take about a week to transition from the old food to the new brand. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. They are growing quickly, so while they eat smaller quantities of food than adult dogs, they need to extract far more nutrients like protein, minerals, and vitamins, to sustain their growth and development. Different Dogs, Different Diets Nutritional needs vary from breed to breed. One only needs to look at golden retrievers to know they require a different diet than a Chihuahua! For example, joint and bone problems are much more common in big dogs than in little ones, but choosing the right puppy food can reduce the risk. Large-breed puppy food has reduced amounts of calcium and phosphorus, which helps control the rate of skeletal growth. Also, you may find puppy foods that contain glucosamine and chondroitin to support joint health and mobility. By consuming too much food, your puppy will have elevated levels of the very nutrients that should be limited. Additionally, overweight puppies may develop other health issues such as diabetes and heart disease. Good eating habits developed during puppyhood will lead to a healthy mature dog in the years to come. Nutrition For The Outside One of the most visible components of your dog is its fur. Nutrition plays a vital role in this area. A large percentage of the protein your puppy takes in goes towards maintaining its coat. Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential for healthy skin and fur. Which Food Do I Choose? There will always be those who buy the cheapest brand on the market. Some will opt for the most expensive, while others will simply go with a brand name they recognize. The key is to find the right food for your particular puppy. One thing you cannot afford to ignore is the nutritional content. Because they are still growing, puppies need more protein than adults. Proteins foster muscle growth and development in puppies and lean muscle maintenance in adults, so the more of it there is in a diet, the better it is for your growing retriever. Fats, too, are important for golden puppies because they provide the energy required for everyday activities. You should be careful, however, not to feed your golden excess calories because this will result in excess weight or obesity. Eventually, your dog will end up battling joint problems. For instance, less expensive dog foods typically have lower-quality ingredients. The contents are often inexpensive, low-grade animal protein sources, like by-products and fillers. Fillers are frequently things like cornmeal, rice flour, or seed hulls. In general, thoroughly review the nutritional content of your chosen diet. Are the ingredients wholesome and natural? Does the diet have controlled calcium and phosphorous levels? Is the calorie and fat content limited to manage growth? Does the label state that the diet is complete and balanced? This can lead to obesity and will certainly cause increased defecation. The latter of these two issues will make house training more difficult than it already is. By contrast, costlier dog foods usually have higher-quality ingredients. The scales will be tipped heavily in favor of high-grade animal protein sources and fillers will be few and far between. Price is not, however, a guarantee of quality. The best dog foods for a golden retriever puppy are made with high-quality natural ingredients and have high levels of protein. Make sure the food is complete and balanced for daily feeding and formulated to meet the nutritional needs of large breed puppies. At this point, golden retriever puppies have likely already been switched to dry puppy food and you should continue feeding your pup the same type of food the breeder used. From the day you bring them home until they are six months old, you should feed your golden retriever puppy three times a day. Ideally, your pup should have breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day. A grain-free diet is the default meal for golden retrievers that are sensitive to grains, but if your dog is healthy, feeding her such a meal boils down to choice. A lot has been said about grain-free diets. Reports and studies have been carried out in recent years trying to establish any connection between it and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy DCM. That all starts with choosing the best puppy food for golden retrievers. Avoid low-cost foods that are more filler than substance, and look for better foods that are packed with nutrients to help your puppy grow. In particular, consider trying a large breed formula to meet the specific needs of your golden retriever puppy. Good nutrition is an essential part of any health regimen, and providing high-quality puppy food will lay the foundation for a long, and enjoyable life. You May Also Like.

german shepherd bernese mountain dog puppies - First you must find your foundation. I started thinking about how nice it would be to have a German Shepherd Dog like when I was young. I remember how pretty they were so I told Jeffrey, "I want a German shepherd". He immediately went on the hunt. He loves that stuff. When Jeff started showing me the dogs he was finding I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It is so hard to find a old fashion discerning yet calm, straight back shepherd these days. We found out the show dog people, changed the appearance of the Shepherd. It all looks legit so we bought a couple. I didn't care how much money or time I had in them or how great their paperwork said they were I had enough. I couldn't take it anymore. It was not what I wanted. Next Shepherd dog we found was the working line. We got a beautiful pup we called Titus. When we went look at him as a pup I mean he shined. He was like his owners shadow. He never got tripped on and moved like the wind. I knew that this dog had a high prey drive but I didn't know he didn't have an off button. We loved him but at a year old we placed with a man who lived on an 80 acre farm. Lord Jesus, what happened to the big beautiful straight back family farm German Shepherd Dog? I mean who would have thought? How hard could it be? But nowadays, what we were wanting was the minority. Most shepherds now either have the curved back that they swear is healthier, tested and winning everything. That is how they separate them now. They need a job, a serious job. They to hyper and to prey driven for what I wanted. Thanks to The Good Lord Jeff had ask me several times if I would be interested in the white shepherd. I said, "That is exactly what I want. We bought off different litters. These dogs are mentally smart. They are like a human with fur. They will understand your language and they learn everything very very fast. You should just be able to tell them once or twice and they get it. They potty train very fast! They are clean dogs. Most GSD tend to be wary of strangers or aloof, but not ours. Their drive to retrieve things makes them a companion for entertainment. They love kids. Who better to trust watching over the kiddos than the trusted loyal White Shepherd. I know my own and my own know me. According to an article in USA Today, 1, sheep fell off a cliff to their deaths in Turkey in .One sheep fell, so the others followed suit and jumped. In the end, sheep died. The ones that survived only lived because they were cushioned by landing on top of their fellow herd members. As a child growing up in church, I remember seeing a picture of Jesus with a lamb wrapped around his neck. As I grew older and visited more churches, I remember seeing similar pictures at a lot of places. I never questioned the image. The Bible is clear that God is our shepherd, and we are the sheep of his pasture, so I assumed the image demonstrated that biblical truth. However, several years ago while I was attending seminary, the image of the lamb wrapped around the neck of Jesus was explained to me. Because sheep tend to stray and will also follow wherever they are led, shepherds often had to discipline lambs that would stray from their shepherd. The shepherd would use his rod to break the leg of a wandering lamb. After binding the break, the shepherd would carry the lamb on his shoulders while the wound healed. If the lamb struggled and fought, it would quickly realize that the broken leg wouldn't allow it to flee. The lamb learned during the healing process that the shepherd could be trusted. The lamb needed the shepherd to provide food, transportation and protection. Once the wound was completely healed, the lamb was fiercely loyal to the shepherd and wouldn't stray from the shepherd's leading. A few years ago a news story broke about Shrek the sheep. Shrek was a Merino sheep who lived in New Zealand. Shrek became famous because he managed to avoid being captured and shorn for six years. His wool continued to grow and thicken, and his eyes were eventually hidden behind the thick coat. Shrek dodged the sheering by hiding in caves and running from his master. Once Shrek was finally captured and shorn, he carried 60 pounds of wool on his body, nearly six times the average amount. The wool on Shrek's body was enough to produce 20 men's dress suits. It's easy to see why the Bible compares us to sheep. We often follow the crowd, even when it leads to our own demise. We stray from the shepherd who loves us and seeks to protect us. We don't appreciate when God disciplines us. But if we surrender to him we learn through the discipline that God can be trusted. We are often like Shrek the sheep as well. We hide from God, clinging to the things that need to be shorn from us. We become weighed down with the burdens God could easily remove from us. The Bible also shares with us that God anointed his people with oil just as the shepherds anointed the heads of their sheep with oil. This wasn't just a symbolic ritual. Sheep are easy targets for flies, lice and ticks. A sheep that was not covered in oil on his head could easily become the victim of infestations of these pests. However, it wasn't just a nuisance. Bugs would crawl through the ear canal of the unoiled sheep and nest in its brain, eating away at it. The pain from the bugs would be so severe on the sheep that the sheep would bang his skull on rocks and against trees to ease his suffering. The sheep could break his own skull seeking relief from the brain-eating parasites. When God offers to anoint us with his oil, it means he offers us protection from the parasites of this world that seek to eat away at us. If we hide in caves, or jump off the proverbial cliffs of this world, dodging his anointing and protection, we may become victims of this world. We may become so filled with pain that we hit our heads against rocks to ease our suffering. God seeks to shepherd us through this life. Oftentimes that is through discipline, sheering or anointing. But it is always with love, and it is always with our best interest at heart. He is our shepherd. He can be trusted when we surrender to his leading.
