However, he is just as happy being near his people, getting head scratches and hanging out with them. He will occasionally resource guard his ball a bit around other dogs if they are attempting to steal it away but overall plays "keep away" pretty well with the other dogs in his foster home for the most part. They are always monitored to ensure one isn't stealing the others toys and are being respectful of each other during playtime. While Obie doesn't mind the company of other dogs and playing with them from time to time, he does best with easy going dogs who will not try to bully him or start fights with him. Obie does have aggressive outbursts from time to time and those are likely linked to neurological issue that he has had since puppyhood. He was attacked by another dog and shaken when he was very young so while he gets around just fine and can walk and run just like any other normal dog, he does walk slightly off kilter with a sort of "swagger". Obie is ultimately an insecure dog that needs to find a home that is quiet and easy going with a family that will provide calm, firm, and consistent leadership for him. He absolutely needs a family who is very dog experienced, can be diligent and consistent in paying attention to and reading his body language and who is able and willing to deal with any issues as they arise. He does best with calm, firm and consistent leadership because he can then trust and rely on his people to provide him with a safe and secure environment. It did take Obie time to learn to trust his foster family and, initially, he was quite leery and standoffish with them. This should also be expected in his adoptive home until he has been given time to be able to build a relationship with his new family members and has learned that he can trust them. Obie sometimes zones out and "sees red" and displays aggression toward the humans in his home when something occurs that upsets him, most typically when he is asked to do something he does not want to do or if something occurs that makes him feel insecure. Obie has bitten and has drawn blood in the past. It should be noted that if he is able to make contact, he bites with a determined bite each and every time. After he calms down a bit, he does seem to have learned his aggressive behaviors are not acceptable in his current foster home and he typically will put himself in a time out in his kennel as his foster family has trained him to do. If he doesn't start heading toward his kennel on his own, his foster family will firmly tell him to "go to bed" and point toward his kennel in which he will then typically go to his kennel. When placing his muzzle, diligence and caution must be taken. Any type of grooming interaction that makes him uncomfortable and insecure feeling which, to date, we have experienced is all of them , he will begin displaying aggressive tendencies. The muzzle will protect his people so that he can have necessary care routines accomplished without the danger of being bitten. Again, if he is given the opportunity, he WILL bite when he is feeling insecure, scared or uncomfortable if precautions are not taken in advance to avoid such instances. Obie is always fed in his kennel to avoid food aggression issues. He is asked to sit and and wait calmly in his kennel and then his food can be placed inside of his kennel without issue. His food bowl is not removed from his kennel until he is out of his kennel. Again, he MUST have a calm, firm and consistent leadership in his adoptive home, just as he does with his foster family. With calm, firm and consistent leadership he seems to do very well and his outbursts are only occasional and now that they know him well, can usually be expected and predicted with with his foster family. Alternatively, she can be kenneled when someone unfamiliar to her visits the home and while she still barks, she does fine with that routine as well. Again, once she is able to gain trust she is a very loving dog and wants to be near her humans and enjoys affection and attention. A nice belly rub is one of her favorites! Bea should never be allowed to be elevated - up on furniture, the bed, etc. Again, she is an insecure dog and putting dogs in an elevated position gives them a sense of dominance. Her family members should always be the pack leaders with firm, consistent, rules and boundaries set forth and she should never need to be put in that position. When Bea is feeling insecure she acts out in the form of loud barking and lunging toward those unfamiliar situations and around unfamiliar people. She must always be leashed when outside of her home environment and she currently wears a martingale collar and a prong collar when on public outings to ensure her safety and anyone who may be around her. I know British labs have been "trendy" and there's some questionable breeding. However, there is different behavioral characteristic between American bred and UK bred field lines. Namely, in the way field trails are run. Allot of the field trial winners in the US wouldn't be bred in the UK because they favor different characteristics in their dogs, and field trial winners get bred allot. I've watched some videos of US field trials and allot of those dogs have real bad "creep" that I would never allow my dog to get away with. I'm not sure if my dog would ever be capable of a yard blind but he is capable of a yard blind and that's all I need from him. UK field trial dogs are eliminated if they make any noise. My dog never barks, ever, and he doesn't whine. That's an ingrained trait. If I was strictly a grouse hunter I would have a pointer. If I strictly pheasant hunted I would probably import an english springer from the UK. Those dogs are serious pheasant hunters! I've never seen more drive then from an English springer from good UK field trial lines. For an all around hunting dog, that's good around the house, it's a lab from UK field trial lines. I'm on the waitlist for another lab currently, but after one of my dogs passes away my partner wants to get a golden. I told her it has to be from good hunting lines so we'll see how it matches up. Below, I will mention a number of reasons why it might be doing it and what would make them more likely. Noises The cause could be that there are noises that it does not like. Noises that it might not like could include thunder, sirens, wind or construction works. This would be more likely if it seems to become afraid when these noises are present. Dogs have much more sensitive hearing than us so it could also be the case that it hears a noise but you do not. I have written more about what you can do about it not liking certain noises here. Mistreatment It could be the case that it is timid due to mistreatment. This would be more likely if you recently adopted it from a shelter. However, it could also be the case that someone mistreated it recently as well especially if it became scared suddenly. If it is adopted from a shelter then it would be likely that it will get better over the course of weeks. However, you could speed up the process by giving it positive attention, exercise and things to play with. German Shepherds tend to like structure in their schedules and when things happen that changes it they can become apprehensive. This would be more likely to be the reason if your German Shepherd was not acting that way before moving homes. In this case, it is likely that it will improve over the course of weeks. Illness or injury It could be the case that an illness or injury is causing it to be timid or scared. This would be more likely if it has been showing signs of being ill or injured such as by vomiting, limping or behaving differently. In this case, the best option would be for you to take it to a vet. This would be more likely if your puppy is around the age of 6 weeks old since it is not uncommon for German Shepherds to become slightly timid at around that age. In this case, it would be likely that it will become less timid as it gets older. You intimidate it It might be the case that you have been intimidating it. This might be because you approach it too quickly, you shout at it, get emotional around it or that you seem confrontational when around it. In this case, it would help to be calm around your GSD and to give it lots of positive reinforcement training so that it learns how to behave the right way. You have inadvertently reinforced the behavior It might be the case that you have inadvertently trained it to behave that way by giving it things that it wants when it does it such as attention, toys or treats. Instead of rewarding it, when it is scared, try to reward it only when it behaves the way that you want and to ignore it when it is timid if it seems to be doing it for attention. Things to consider There are a number of things that you can consider when trying to figure out why your German Shepherd might be doing it. Below, I will mention a few particularly helpful things to consider. If it has always been timid, scared or afraid It would help to consider whether or not it has always acted that way or if it has started doing it suddenly since there could be an event that triggered it to start doing it. If it started doing it suddenly then it could be due to things such as a certain noise becoming present like construction works, illness, injury or someone mistreating it. Whereas, if it has always acted that way then it might be the case that you inadvertently trained it to be that way when it was a puppy but it could also be the case that it is naturally more timid. When it does it more It would also help to consider when it becomes more scared or timid. If there are certain times that it tends to do it then it would be more likely that there is something in its environment that is causing it and it would help to consider what is different when it does it. Whereas, if it is always timid then it would be more likely to be due to things such as being inadvertently trained to be that way, illness, injury or mistreatment by previous owners. How old it is It would also help to consider its age. If it is still a puppy then it would be more likely that it is going through a more timid stage. Whereas, if it is an adult then it would be more likely to be due to one of the other reasons mentioned above. What to do about your German Shepherd being timid scared or afraid There are a number of things that you can do about your German Shepherd acting that way. The best thing for you to do with your German Shepherd will depend on the cause of it doing it. Below, I will show you some options that you have. Take it to a vet If you are unsure of why your GSD has been behaving this way, it has started doing it suddenly or it has been showing other signs of illness or injury then the best option would be to take it to a vet. By doing so you will be able to make sure that it is healthy and you can get expert advice on why your dog might be acting that way. After the vet has confirmed that it is ok it would help to ensure that it gets at least an hour of exercise daily. You can exercise it by walking it, playing fetch with it or having a dog walker do it for you. Avoid encouraging the behavior As mentioned above, it could be the case that you have been inadvertently training your GSD to behave that way. Instead of giving it things that it wants when it is timid it would help to reward it when it is well behaved and to avoid giving it attention when it is scared. Be calm around it Since your own actions might be causing it to be acting that way it would help to be calm around your German Shepherd and to avoid making intimidating gestures. It would also help to give it lots of positive reinforcement training as opposed to punishment-based training. Avoid physical punishment If you punish your German Shepherd then it would be recommended to avoid doing so anymore. The reason for this is that it might not understand what you are punishing it for, it can cause behavioral issues and it could cause it to have feelings of resentment towards you.
