best puppy dog food for german shepherds
Puppy pads Create a Schedule German Shepherd pups would do well with a schedule. Dogs live with a routine, and they are easy to train by having one. For this reason, make a schedule of the things you need to do regularly. Eventually, your pup will learn the routine events and will make itself adept at them. It will help you prepare for your pet, especially in the first few days of living together. As you allow your pet to adjust, do your best to create a stress-free environment for it. Always supervise it as it familiarizes itself with its new home. Still, it would be best to prepare yourself for loud noises when your pet is asleep. Moderate Training German Shepherds are highly trainable. It simply means they respond well, especially to positive reinforcement. Squeaky Toys Out of all toys, your pet will love the squeaky ones. For this reason, prepare for a lot of loud squeaks every time your pet is active. Thus, in picking your pet, you may want to consider getting it from the best. Tells you any health problems A good breeder will tell you any significant health problems in any of the dogs he or she bred. Asks more questions than you A good breeder would ask for more items from you than you would for him or her. Not in a hurry to send off A good breeder is not in a hurry to send the puppies off and get your money. He or she will even show you other breeders and veterinarians caring for their dogs. Requires expectations on both sides A good breeder will create a contract that offers not only what he or she expects from you. More than that, he or she will also show what you can expect from him or her. Sends puppies properly A good breeder will never send a puppy in a compartment and without any responsible person to go with it. Works only with one or two breeds A good breeder works only with a single or a couple of species. Shows breeding experience A good breeder shows her dogs in recognized confirmation shows. He or she will also join his or her breed in other breed-related performance events. Other states. Check with the breeder for up-to-date information on puppy availability. Our Story Love and Loss Welcome, we are Linda and Jerry, and our story began when we took our children to pick out a puppy in .We had our children with us and intended to bring home one puppy, however, after a lot of tears and their inability to make a decision, we brought home two puppies, sisters. They shared our passion for the outdoors and exercise, and were part of our family for over 13 years. In their 13th year we lost them within 10 days of one another, the first to illness, and her sister most likely due to a broken heart. We were devastated! Not only had we lost our canine family members, our children had recently moved on to begin their next chapters. Helping Others Besides keeping busy with our jobs, we also kept busy with significant involvement in fundraising, participation, and volunteer efforts. Our interest in the program was personal, stemming from the illness and ultimate loss of a parent afflicted with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. In fact, Jerry has been donating platelets twice a month for over 10 ten years. But, something was still missing, the nest felt too empty. Re-filling the Empty Nest Despite our growing extended family, we still felt an emptiness of spirit in our home — we missed canine companionship. In considering a new canine family member, we remembered that years before we met a neighbor with a new pup and were intrigued by its personality, so we asked what breed it was and learned it was a Labradoodle. Through our research, we learned of the origin and unique characteristics to the breed which led us to finding a well-respected, responsible, and knowledgeable breeder. In late we brought home our first puppy, Sasha. We fell in love with everything about her, from her beauty to her puppy antics, and most importantly, her loving heart. And, we found that she was determined to find her way into the hearts of every human she met. As we progressed through training levels with Sasha it became crystal clear to us that what we had learned in our research about the intelligence of this breed was true. This is what led us to the desire to further this wonderful breed. Our Decision Among its many amazing qualities, the Multi-Generational Australian Labradoodle breed may be ideal for those with canine allergies, as well as for those looking for a low to non-shedding dog. We began to recognize that the very nature of this awesome breed fit well with our passion for doing our part to help others, which is why we maintained continuous training through the testing and achievement of the AKC Good Citizen certification. As Sasha approached her one year birthday we reached out to our breeder with our interest in the avenue of starting our own — small, in-home breeding program, of Multi-Generational Australian Labradoodles. In mid we brought home a new addition to our family — Colonial Village Berkley — a gorgeous smaller medium, caramel colored fleece-coated female. Berkley was the initiator of our small, home-based, breeding program. In June, , her first litter of 8 spectacular caramel and chocolate babies were born. She has a phenomenal chocolate silky fleece coat, and is a standard-size. Every crossbreed dog can resemble one parent breed or come as a combination of both. Golden Retriever The golden retriever parent is one of the most popular dog breeds in the States. No wonder! What once was a terrific working dog is now a beloved family pup. According to the Golden Retriever growth chart , this dog breed is a medium-sized one, and can grow between 55 and 75 pounds, and stand tall at 23 to 24 inches. If you give them a good life, the Golden Retriever will stick around for a while since its average lifespan is 10 to 12 years. As for their nature, Golden Retrievers are friendly, loyal, outgoing, and are eager to learn and please their humans. Just be careful — even Goldens can express aggressive behavior without proper training. They need at least an hour a day of exercise to drain their energy bar. Besides a good walk in the park, Golden Retrievers love playing fetching games, as well as engaging in obedience and agility courses. Dalmatian With its regal posture and unique coat fashion, the Dalmatian is one of the most recognized dog breeds in the world. Interestingly enough, they come in short and long coat varieties. Many people find their attractive looks to be the reason why they love Dalmatians, but the true reason is their amazing character. Provide plenty of exercise to your Dalmatian pup. Take him on hikes and agility courses. Only then will you have a completely happy Dalmatian. Dalmatians are highly intelligent dogs that tend to be stubborn. When training them, you need to have a firm hand; otherwise, your dog will assume the pack leader position. Besides obedience training, a Dalmatian puppy should be submitted to early socialization. If you want a Dalmatian puppy that will get along with kids perfectly fine, you need to have it socialized first. Deafness is an inherited polygenic trait that can be passed on from the parent to their offspring. Moving on, Dalmatians have a unique urinary system that no other dog breed has. They should always have fresh water available to keep their urinary system flushed. If you follow all these simple rules, your Dalmatian puppy may actually lead a long and healthy life of 10 to 13 years. The Goldmatian is a lovely combination of two dog breeds: the sweet-natured Golden Retriever and the playful Dalmatian. This hybrid dog is perfect for active families that already have pets. Want to get your dog another dog? Pick this one! Goldmatians are sweet, but they will keep out intruders with their sharp bark thank you, Dalmation parent. The Goldmatian is a designer dog that has been around for almost 30 years. The goal of creating this crossbreed was to get a puppy that would be compact in size, low-shedding, and friendlier than most species, but still quite healthy. Did the breeders succeed? We think so! The Goldmatian is a dream. With a herding, hunting, and working dog history, the Goldmatian is a dog breed capable of doing pretty much anything. A fully grown Goldmatian dog will weigh from 55 to 70 pounds, and stand tall at 19 to 23 inches. Their coats may be short or longer, but the spotting from the Dalmatian parent will come through. The spotting may be very visible or subtle, with faded markings on a light coat. No matter what kind of spotting your Goldmatian has, you will need to keep brushing it 2 to 3 times a week to keep the coat looking good. Both parent breeds are big shedders, so expect your Goldmatian doggy to shed a lot, too! Photo from: willowthegoldmatian The Goldmatian is a hybrid dog or a designer dog. The AKC recognizes only purebred dogs. So, if you really care about registration, and you want to compete in dog shows, maybe the Dalmation recognized in or the Golden Retriever recognized in would be the better choice. Photo from: greyriverhardy The Goldmatian is a loving dog. They need human company, and they thrive when surrounded by people they love. Separation anxiety may lead to destructive behavior, and if it continues, it may even lead to severe depression. Your dog will work on its mental stimulation while trying to find the way to the treat. Coming from lines of excellent guard dogs, watch dogs, and protectors, the Goldmatian is the kind of dog that will bark its brains out to chase away intruders. Photo from: kobethegoldmatian Since the parent breeds are two very smart cookies, the Goldmatian puppy should be intelligent, too, if not smarter! But, even the smartest pooches need training to become the best dogs ever. You will need obedience training to curb any unwanted behavior with this crossbreed. The Dalmatian parent is very prone to barking and being vocal, so there is a high chance that your Goldmatian puppy will be the same. They will howl and bark until you make them stop. But, how do you make the dog listen to you? The first rule of dog training is to start young. Start yesterday! The sooner you begin with the training, the faster the puppy will pick up commands. Arm yourself with confidence, patience, and a strict attitude. Every time your pooch does something good, reward him. Positive reinforcement is the best approach for training not only Goldmatians, but other dog breeds, too! No matter how smart your dog is, he still needs to be socialized. Early socialization is recommended, and it usually starts if you get the puppy from a reputable breeder. Continue with socialization when you bring the puppy home, and make sure you expose him to different people, stimulations, and pets in order to get a well-behaving family dog. Every dog deserves top-quality dog food, and so does the Goldmatian. This pup must have food appropriate to its life stage, size, and activity level. Goldmatians are energetic dogs. They need their daily dose of proteins to keep them running. Since one of the parents, the Dalmatian, is prone to urinary stones, you should pick dog food that is low in purine, and also provide lots of fresh water. Another common health issue with the Goldmatian is with their joints. Instead, feed him 2 to 3 smaller meals throughout the day. These puppies have inherited the likelihood of suffering from certain cancers, joint issues like elbow or hip dysplasia, as well as kidney stones and deafness. Also, the Goldmatian is ranked 11 out of 3, dogs tested for thyroid problems. Your Goldmatian can be as healthy as any other dog breed as long as you take good care of it. Golden Retriever Dalmatian Mix Lifespan If you ensure that your dog has a good life, packed with fun activities, regular vet visits, high-quality dog food, and lots of love and care, then you can expect to spend 10 to 12 years alongside him. Goldmations are lovely crossbreed dogs. You should make every moment memorable. Goldmatian Exercise Requirements This mixed breed dog is an energetic one that needs its daily dose of exercise. But, when in public, keep them on a leash since their prey drive is pretty high. A dog with a full energy bar is not something you want at the end of the day. Such dogs get too excited and may bother you or the rest of the pets in your household. What Are Goldmatian Puppies Like? Photo from: kobethegoldmatian Goldmatian puppies are regular-sized puppies that will grow into intelligent dogs on the bigger end of the line. Start socializing them from day one, and slowly build up their confidence by introducing them to new faces, sounds, and situations. Goldmatian puppies should be tested for autoimmune thyroiditis; a quite common health problem inherited from the Dalmatian side of the family. Other health screenings include BAER a hearing test at the age of five weeks. This test is extremely important since the Dalmatian parent is prone to deafness. Reliable breeders should conduct these tests and be open with the results. FAQs How much does a Goldmatian puppy cost? Are Goldmatians good watchdogs? Goldmatians are quite capable of staying alert and acting as watchdogs and guard dogs. They will bark and warn their owner if a threat is near. Is the Goldmatian aggressive? Unlike some breeds that are notorious for being classified as aggressive, the Golden Retriever Dalmatian mix is not an aggressive dog by default. Every dog should be submitted to obedience lessons and socialization from an early age. Is that really what you want? Where can I get a Goldmatian puppy? This is a fairly rare crossbreed, and you will have to work hard to get one. We recommend you keep an eye on your local shelters for possible rejected Goldmatians. Also, ask around your area for some reputable breeders that breed Golden Retrievers or Dalmatians. If getting your hands on a Golden Retriever Dalmatian puppy is too difficult, maybe you should have a second choice. Here, take a look at the sweetest, most popular mixed breed puppies coming from the mentioned dog breeds:. These traits make Goldmation a perfect mix between a friendly companion dog and the ever-alert watchdog dog. Physical Appearance Size Goldmation is a mid-sized breed. The average height of a Goldmation is between 19 and 23 inches. A Goldmation will typically weigh between 55 and 70 pounds. Coat Generally, the Goldmation coat is straight, medium to long, and dense with some iconic spots inherited from the Dalmatian lineage. Therefore, expect your Goldmation to shed a lot, especially during the spring and autumn. You will need to brush your dog at least three times a week to prevent tangling and matting. Nose The nose is black as in the parent breeds. Photo credit: Pinterest Personality Goldmation is a very intelligent, loyal, and friendly dog. These dogs are perfect for active families with kids of all ages due to their energy, kindness, and willingness to play. Goldmation is also capable of protecting his owner. This is where his Dalmatian watchdog side comes into play. You will often see a Goldmation barking at strangers. Goldmations are intelligent dogs, that are willing to please their owners. Therefore, they are quick learners and easy to train. However, high intelligence and social nature also mean they need plenty of mental stimulants, interactions, and challenges to prevent boredom. A bored Goldmation will indulge in a wide variety of unwanted behaviors. The most notable and problematic are barking, howling, and destructive chewing. Health Problems Designer breeds will often be free of the health issues that often plague their purebred parents. However, there is always a possibility that a dog will inherit certain health issues from its parents. Generally, Goldmations are healthy dogs. However, they can inherit a susceptibility to cancers and heart issues from the Golden Retriever side. On the other hand, Dalmatians are prone to deafness, kidney stones , and thyroid issues. Both Goldens and Dalmatians are prone to joint issues such as elbow and hip dysplasia. Therefore, there is a high probability that their offspring will suffer from the same issues. Life Expectancy Researchers have shown that larger dog breeds have a shorter life span than smaller ones. Since Goldmations are large dogs, their life expectancy is on average between 10 and 12 years. Your dog can live above or below this line based on genetics, the way you care about him, and his lifestyle. Therefore, your Goldmation will need plenty of walks, exercise, and agility training to spend that energy and stay healthy. Conclusion Dalmatian Golden Retriever mix or Goldmation is a designer breed perfect for the role of a companion dog. Goldmations excel in active families with children, where they will get enough attention and playtime. So, if you are an outgoing, active person the Goldmation is a perfect dog for you. On the other hand, if you are a couch potato, Goldmation may not be the best choice. People Also Ask How much does a Goldmation puppy cost? Are Goldmations good watchdogs? The Dalmatian is thought to be a mysterious breed because their history is relatively unknown. The Dalmatian is a unique-looking breed that has gone through a large range of popularity in North America. They originally hail from the country of Dalmatia, which was in the Mediterranean. It is part of Croatia and is a region along the sea and some islands in the Adriatic Sea. Most people do not know much about the Dalmatian beyond what they seem to be in the movies. They are most noteworthy for their athleticism. They are an agile breed that can build up quite a bit of speed and endurance. Dalmatians have always been hard workers and have been used in a wide variety of roles. They have been hunters, war dogs, herding pups, protectors, and draft dogs. They are primarily known as being a companion to firefighters nowadays because they are extremely loyal and fearless. Their popularity has ranged. When they were first introduced to America, they quickly grew in popularity because they looked so unique. However, in the s, more and more breeds started making their way to American shores, and the Dalmatian became less popular. Dalmatians need plenty of time with their family or caretakers. They bond strongly and cannot be left alone for long at all. They are also active and need quite plenty of daily activity to stay well behaved. Golden Retrievers originally come from Scotland. Golden Retrievers have remained one of the most popular breeds in North America for many years. Most of this is because of their charming personality and laidback characteristics. These beautiful dogs originate from Scotland, having been bred by Lord Tweddmouth in the s. He was a viscount who ended up adopting a dog named Nous. This puppy was young and yellow and had wavy hair all over. Interestingly, Nous came from a litter of black puppies. Lord Tweedmouth began to breed Nous by crossing the dog with a Tweed Water Spaniel, a breed that has since become extinct. The AKC recognized the Golden Retriever in , and they currently rank number three in overall popularity compared to the other breeds recognized by the AKC now. Goldmatians, like any hybrid, is a mix of both of their parents. Both the Golden Retriever and the Dalmatian are devoted dogs who need plenty of time with their family. The Goldmatian inherits all of this and requires plenty of time spent with their humans. They are not incredibly hyper dogs, but they do need plenty of activity to stay satisfied from day to day. They can be quite rambunctious, especially as puppies. These dogs are brilliant, inheriting smarts from both sides of the family. This intelligence can make them somewhat difficult to train if they decide to be stubborn. It can also get them into trouble if they are left to their own devices for too long. Are Goldmatians Good for Families? Dalmatian Golden Retriever Mixes are gentle-natured and quickly learn where it is appropriate to be rambunctious and where it is best to remain calm. If they are socialized early on, they will do well around both kids and adults. Around strangers, they will bark loudly but typically behave in a non-aggressive manner. They need to receive socialization early on to understand how to behave well around other animals. They like to play around and have fun, so they often do better in a home with more than one dog. Around other animals, such as cats or rodents, observe them because they have a higher prey drive. Designer dogs, however, became quite popular in the United States in the s. The golden retriever dalmatian is thought to be one of the first hybrids developed. These designer dogs come from a long lineage of popular established breeds — the Dalmatian and the Golden Retrieve. Golden Retrievers were bred in Scotland in the mids. Their main task was to retrieve downed game from water or land for their hunter-owners. They came to the United States via Canada in .Dalmatians got their name from Dalmatia, a region in Croatia. These dogs have existed in Asia, Africa, and other areas of Europe since ancient times. Throughout history, dalmatians have been guarding sheep, trained to hunt, and were retrievers, performers, and guard dogs running alongside coaches protecting the horses and passengers. Their appearance depends on genetics! However, we do know that this is one adorable breed. The Golden Retriever Dalmatian is a medium to large-sized dog with a well-proportioned body. They usually have a long snout, a somewhat curved tail, and droopy ears. The adult Goldmatian is generally between 19 to 23 inches tall and weighs between 55 to 70 pounds. Their eyes are usually brown or blue, and they have black noses. As mentioned above, it is hard to say precisely what the golden retriever dalmatian will look like. Some are a perfect blend of both parental breeds. This pattern may be clearly visible and distinct, or it can be faint and subtle with just a tinge of the spots on their lighter coat. You never know — up to genetics! But in any case, the Goldmatian is just one of the cutest, most adorable designer dogs you could ever want! This breed will do well with single pet parents or with families. The important thing is that their family is active. This breed is best suited for people with a home with a fenced-in yard for them to run around safely. This is a very active breed with tons of energy; they need lots of exercise to use up all that energy. Also note this designer dog has a high prey drive, and they have a tendency to chase small critters. Therefore, it is crucial to keep this dog on a leash when taking them out for a walk. They LOVE to be with their human family and even get along famously with other dogs in the household. They are fantastic family dogs and get along wonderfully with children of all ages. Goldmatians do not like to be alone. Since this dog is a part golden retriever, they love to be around people. Therefore, they might not be an excellent fit for a family if they will be left alone for long periods of time. Left alone for long periods can lead to destructive behavior, including chewing on things and excessive barking. I know first-hand about separation anxiety with Golden Retrieves. We have a golden mix, and we left him home for less than an hour to run an errand. We lived at the time in a two-bedroom apartment, and we crate-train our dog as a puppy. He was three years old at the time and no longer confined to a crate when we left our home. Who knew that while we were gone, a kid would pull the fire alarm, and the fire department would pull up just as we were returning to our apartment? The alarm was a constant high shriek sound right outside our apartment. Our golden mix was terrified. He chewed a HUGE hole in an oriental carpet my husband had brought back from India while on a business trip! Needless to say, my husband was furious. But who could be upset with our pet? Separation anxiety is real among goldens, and when they become scared, they become destructive. Lesson learned. However, you must put the time into crate training your Goldmatian puppy. And notice I said puppy — it would be next to impossible to retrain an older dog. This will be discussed further along in this article. Another option if you have your heart set on this breed and must leave the house for long periods of time is doggie daycare. Doggie daycare is also an excellent option for your pet to learn socialization skills and how to interact with other people and dogs. Both of the parental breeds of the golden retriever dalmatian are very intelligent, which could make training your Goldmatian challenging since they tend to be a tad bit stubborn. Be consistent with your training and reinforce that YOU are the alpha dog, and your Goldmatian should obey. Remember always to praise and reward when they follow your instructions. There is nothing more satisfying to these dogs than to please their owner. Both of their parental breeds are shedders, so there is no way around this. To keep their coats shiny and looking good, they should be brushed twice a week at a minimum. This will also help prevent tangles and matting from occurring, especially during the two main shedding seasons in spring and fall. In fact, you might feel as though your pet is shedding so much that they will go bald during these times. But have no fear; this is normal. What about bathing? This breed is known to be droolers, and they are very active. Because of their drooling, they can develop a doggy odor, and when this happens, you know it is time for a bath. Usually, baths are needed once amount. Only do this occasionally, as they can dry out their skin. To reduce the doggy odor caused by their excessive drooling, you might find it beneficial to put some towels or lightweight blankets on top of their bedding. Before these start to become smelly, you can toss them in the washer, and this will help keep your Goldmatian smelling fresher longer. Also, make sure you check their ears, nails, and teeth several times a month, preferably weekly. Their ears should be gently cleaned with a soft cloth once a week, which helps prevent the smelly yeast infection that droopy-eared dogs are prone to. You can time this cleaning to coincide with their regular brushing routine, and your pet will think they spent some time at the spa! This also makes a great bonding experience between you and your pet. Their teeth should be cleaned at least once a week. The Golden Retriever Dalmatian mix comes from two very bright parental dogs. Patience is definitely needed here, and you must understand you will never stop their barking; it is only natural to them. Your goal is to control their barking. As mentioned before, Goldmatians are extremely intelligent. One would guess that would mean they are easy to train, and usually, they are, especially since they love to please their owner. However, sometimes they can and do have a strong, stubborn manner. As with both of their parental breeds, the golden retriever dalmatian loves praise and is rewarded for listening and following commands. Therefore, it is essential with training to take a positive approach and give them tons of verbal encouragement, plus a few tasty yummy treats when they have learned and responded appropriately to your instructions. The key to practical training is to be consistent, firm, and fair. Remember, as stated before, socialization is also an essential part of training. Because these dogs are so agile and physically active, they love a physical challenge. They will do well with agility training and other dog sports. In addition, these activities will help tire your dog out. Because these dogs are so intelligent, they will also benefit from mental stimulation training. Here are some examples of mental training to do with your Goldmatian: Interactive Games: such as doggie board games where your dog must complete some obstacles to get a treat or puzzle games where your pet is encouraged to figure out how to get a treat out Hide and seek: tell your dog to sit and stay this is assuming they know these two commands already , and you go and hide and then count to ten and call your dog. Once they find you give them tons of praise and a treat. Playing fetch: this simple activity provides both physical and mental stimulation, and most dogs LOVE playing this game with their owners. Puzzle games: a simple one is a Kong. With a Kong, you fill it with a treat, and your pet must lick, sniff, and shake to dislodge the treat to eat it. And lastly, do not forget crate training. This is very important on so many levels for your dog, no matter their breed. Their crate should be their happy place, a place to sleep, a place to be safe. If you must leave your Goldmatian for extended periods of time, and they have been appropriately crate-trained, their crate becomes a safe place to be while you are away and will keep them safe and out of trouble. If you need to be away for an extended period of time, and your Goldmatian needs to be in their crate, throw in a safe toy like a Kong filled with all-natural peanut butter make sure it does not contain artificial sweeteners as these are deadly to your dog and play some calming pet music. Also remember to provide water. A dispenser that hangs on the side of the crate is an excellent way to keep them hydrated. Once you return, make sure to immediately let your pet out of the crate, praise them, and then take them for a nice long walk to use up their pent-up energy. When you are home, leave their crate door open, and let them wander in and out of their crate at will. The Goldmatian is a high-energy and intelligent breed that needs physical and mental stimulation daily. At a minimum, Goldmatians should get approximately 75 minutes a day of exercise, and at least half of that should be focused and intense. This breed is highly athletic, so you can do various things to meet this daily requirement. You can take them on multiple daily walks, take them running with you, hiking, or swimming. Take them to a dog park to interact with other dogs. Do agility training. If walking is your main go-to activity with them, change your routes and walk at least two miles daily with them. Provide a safe, enclosed backyard space for them to play and explore safely. Please do not leave them alone outside for long, though, or their inquisitive nature might get them into too much trouble! It would be best if you still look for genetic disorders that are more common for Golden Retrievers and Dalmatians. Some minor conditions to be aware of include: Eye Entropion. Golden with black spots, or white with black spots Temperament: Loving, caring, loyal, active, energetic, playful Most Suitable For: Active families with or without children, active single individuals. Not suitable for the elderly or those with mobility issues due to exercise requirements What Does a Golden Retriever Dalmatian Look Like? They may or may not inherit the long coat of the Golden, along with their propensity to shed. They will likely inherit the colour pattern of the Dalmatian, with the traditional spotting. The History of the Golden Retriever Dalmatian Mix The Goldmatian is a relatively new mixed-breed dog, therefore, little is known about the exact history of the breed. Though we do know that the Goldmatian has been around for about 30 years, and was created as part of the crossbreeding craze that began in the United States in the s. The goal being to create a smaller-sized pup to the Dalmatian, with less shedding capacity. Major Marjoribanks was searching for a dog as a companion and a guardian of his luxury mansion. Thus, the first Golden Retriever litter was born. The beautiful and beloved Golden Retriever maintains fantastic popularity in the United States and was named the third most popular dog in the country. Golden Retrievers are incredible dogs for just about every type of owner. They fit very well into almost any family unit and are also quite suitable for the elderly and single individuals. In short, the Golden is a golden choice for almost anyone looking for a dog. Marjoribanks purchased a retriever from a street cobbler and bred the dog with a Tweed Water Spaniel to produce the first Golden Retriever litter in .Some say that the Golden Retriever has been crossbred throughout most of its life, including many of the pups of the first-ever litter that were crossbred with various other dogs to obtain the Golden Retriever that we all know and love today. However, there is little available precise history concerning this initial crossbreeding. However, Golden Retrievers are crossbred routinely today because of their beautiful golden coats and wonderful even temperament! The History of the Dalmatian The history of the Dalmatian stretches back to the Dalmatia region of Croatia, and are thought to be the result of crossbreeding between various types of Pointers, and a spotted Great Dane — hence the rather large height of the Dalmatian, and the thin, spindly legs. Historically, the Dalmatian has been a guard dog of British aristocrats and has been used as a working dog on aristocratic estates, along with use in the battlefields of World War One and has only in the last century become a family pet worldwide. Dalmatians are a relatively popular pet in the United States, though perhaps less so than in Europe — for reasons that are likely to do with the importation of dogs, rather than the desirability of the Dalmatians. Dalmatians make terrific family pets, though they have a history of being guard dogs and are very protective. They make great pets for single individuals as well, though given their energetic nature, perhaps are not best-suited for the elderly or those with mobility issues. How Did Dalmatians Come About? The Dalmatian is first mentioned in the writings of the Bishop of Dakovo in , when the dog is mentioned as a hunting dog from the Dalmatia region of Croatia, sporting long legs and a spotted coat. Crossbreeding of the Dalmatian has been something of a mystery, and quite competitive at the same time. Making sure that you find the dog with the right temperament for your family is critical! Doing your research on this front is vital to ensure a good initial phase of dog ownership, for both yourself and the dog. Goldens are known for being very friendly, loving and even-tempered. Dalmatians will bring a bit of feistiness and more playful energy to the mix. Traditionally, yes. Both the Golden Retriever and Dalmatian mixes are quite friendly dogs, though the Dalmatian may initially be standoffish because of their guardian nature. Yes, both dogs are quite easy to train — the Dalmatian brings a regulating obedience gene to the usual playfulness of the Golden Retriever. The average weight of a Golden Retriever Dalmatian mix will be around 55 — 70 pounds. The average height of a Golden Retriever Dalmatian mix will be around 19 — 23 inches. Similar Sized Breeds Though this is a curious mix in terms of size matchups, as Dalmatians tend to be taller, there are a few similar-sized breeds. Generally, you should expect a fair amount of shedding from the Goldmatian, as both parent breeds are known to be shedders. Ideally, you should brush your Goldmatian once per week to cut down on the shedding! This is one of the areas that can sometimes turn off older owners, or owners without the necessary time or energy to devote to the Goldmatian. This is a dog that requires plenty of exercise. An hour a day is the general benchmark for mixed breeds such as this. The average lifespan of a Golden Retriever Dalmatian mix is typically 10 — 12 years.
Knowing how to identify and treat underlying issues is the key to getting your goldy's tresses back in tip-top shape. Luckily for you and your furry family member, the culprit usually is hypothyroidism. As in humans, this disease can cause serious issues if left untreated, but it is very easy and inexpensive to test for and treat. If your pup is losing hair evenly over entire portions of the body especially the muzzle and tail , this likely is to be the diagnosis, and all you'll have to do is give your furbaby a pill once a day to get things back to normal. A few more troublesome diseases can give your doggy an unconventional 'do, and to add to the confusion, some share other initial symptoms with hypothyroidism. These include Cushing's syndrome and Alopecia X. Both conditions are rare in Golden Retrievers, but if your pup's thyroid test comes back inconclusive, your vet will want to consider these and run further tests. Allergies and Irritations Our fair-furred goldy friends are prone to allergic dermatitis and hot spots. Not only do these look yucky, they are very uncomfortable. If the skin is red, acned, broken or crusty, suspect an allergy. Regular grooming and flea control can help nip hot spots in the bud. Keep in mind that your retriever's thick double coat can trap debris near the skin, causing unsightly and painful sores later. But wait! Too much grooming also can be at the root of your pet's untimely baldness. This can be self-inflicted a bald spot from licking or scratching that aforementioned trapped debris , or a clipper injury in which case you should fire your groomer -- and do not shave a golden, as their double coat keeps them cool in the heat as well as warm in the cold. A Case of the Icky Yucks This is kind of a chicken-or-egg issue: germs can cause irritation, leading to scratching, injury and hair loss; and scratching can cause an injury, which gets infected, leading to further scratching and hair loss. Infections can be bacterial or fungal, including the famed and badly named ringworm yes, we know, it's not really a worm , but all can cause bald patches on your afflicted pet and require veterinary treatment. Creepy Crawlies The most disturbing and dangerous, and definitely the grossest, cause of doggy hair loss is mange. Mange means that microscopic or nearly so mites are munching on your friend. This can be demodetic -- caused by mites that always are on every dog, everywhere. The problem isn't these mites, it's an underlying immune issue that is letting them grow out of control, and that needs veterinary treatment. If your pet truly is unlucky, though, he may be sporting a case of sarcoptic mange, which is highly contagious and fatal if untreated. This absolutely must receive medical attention at the earliest opportunity. If your pet has mange, hair loss usually is patchy, scaly, flaky or crusty, and possibly bloody and scabby, too. More Articles. Tom Thorpe Blog Golden Retrievers are known to have thick and fluffy coats. The most common reason behind it is seasonal shedding. However, it can also point to poor diet, parasitic infestations, health issues, and more. In this post, I will discuss each of these potential reasons and what you need to do about it. Golden Retrievers are quite high maintenance dogs, so you need to pay a lot of attention to their coat. Just remember that coat health is more than just brushing and bathing. It also involves proper diet, regular vet checks, and more that I discussed below. Losing a small amount of hair is normal for Golden Retrievers. Golden Retrievers will have a thick and fluffy coat during the winter season. This is considered normal as your Golden Retriever sheds its thick winter coat to grow a shorter version for summer. However, this shedding must be even. Poor diet Another possible culprit here is poor diet. With this, your Golden Retriever will have normal histamine content on its skin. This means less itching and scratching. This vitamin aids in the utilization of protein, so your Goldie can have thicker and healthier hair. All of these nutrients can be sourced from a complete and balanced diet. Parasitic infestations Photo Credits — Advantage Petcare Parasitic infestations are one of the most common reasons behind coat problems among dogs. The following are the most common parasites reported in many Golden Retrievers: Fleas. The itchy bites will push your dog to lick, chew, and scratch the affected areas. Like fleas, tick bites are itchy, and they can trigger infections that will cause hair loss among dogs. Mange is an umbrella term for all skin infections caused by mites. As the insects burrow on the skin, your dog will lose hair. An affected Golden Retriever will experience unexplainable weight loss, thinning hair, and lethargy. This problem only becomes worse as time goes by, so early treatment is crucial. Thyroid problems Hair thinning among Golden Retrievers is also attributed to conditions like hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism will lead to unexplained weight gain, cold intolerance, dull and thinning hair, and dark skin pigmentation. Some Goldies will also have thickened facial skin and a lack of heat periods. The vet can provide oral thyroid hormone replacements to equalize the hormonal imbalance. A change in diet and lifestyle is also necessary to minimize the effects of this thyroid problem. Allergies and infections Photo-Credits-iStock. These allergies can lead to hair thinning, among other problems. Since Golden Retrievers love playing outdoors, they are prone to atopic dermatitis. Most affected Goldies have inherited the predisposition to this allergy from one of its parent dogs. Another common allergy among dogs is food allergies. It then wrongfully attacks the body, which will lead to skin problems, hair thinning, diarrhea, and more. Moreover, many Golden Retrievers also suffer from a condition called Staphylococcal hypersensitivity. In most cases, this hypersensitivity occurs in Golden Retrievers who are also suffering from thyroid problems and inhalant allergy. Remember that each Golden Retriever is unique, and so is its allergies. Stress Yes, even stress can cause hair thinning in dogs. Over time, your Goldie will lose patches of hair until it gets bald. Moreover, stress and anxiety can also develop compulsive behavior among dogs, including hair pulling. And since Golden Retrievers are prone to anxiety, they are at risk of developing these problems. But what causes extreme stress on Golden Retrievers? The most common is being left alone for long hours. However, massive changes like moving to a new house, welcoming a new pet, or passing a loved one can also trigger stress. Pregnancy and lactation Due to hormonal shifts, both dogs and humans can experience hair loss during pregnancy. This condition is temporary and will likely stop after the puppies have been weaned from the mother dog. Pregnancy can deplete your Golden Retrievers nutrition, which can lead to poor coat health. Heavy shedding out of season will occur because of this. Take note that shedding due to pregnancy can linger up until the nursing period of your dog. Old age Photo-Credits-Wikimedia-Commons. This is due to the diminishing hormone levels typical to a senior canine. While this is somewhat inevitable, proper care can help delay the onset of age-related hair loss. Also, senior Golden Retrievers are prone to health problems, which can thin their coat further. At this point, your dog needs regular vet visits to help treat the health conditions before it gets worse. How can I stop my Golden Retriever from losing too much hair? Still, you can do something to prevent your dog from losing too much hair. Fish oil capsules are a great choice here. You should get a hydrating dog shampoo that will ease irritations and remove dirt that could trigger allergies. For ticks, fleas, and mites, a broad-spectrum topical preventive will provide month-long protection for every dose. Meanwhile, regular deworming treatments are also necessary to prevent the proliferation of heartworm, ringworm, tapeworm, and so on. You should take your Goldie to the vet for routine checks, regardless if it has a health problem or not. This way, the veterinarian can diagnose a health condition even before it causes adverse symptoms like hair thinning. Self-medicating your dog at home may do more harm than help. Lastly, always keep your home clean, especially if your Golden Retriever has a severe history of atopic dermatitis. A clean home is also beneficial to you since dust and dirt can trigger allergies in humans. However, this hair loss must be even and not in patches. You also have to check if your dog is chewing or licking the area excessively. Adverse reactions to shampoo, food, medication, and other external substances can also result in localized hair loss among dogs. Q: Why is my Golden Retriever shedding too much hair all of a sudden? This might be due to hormonal imbalances, parasites, and infections. Q: On what months do Golden Retrievers get their hair thin? A: Golden Retrievers shed the most during fall and spring. This is due to the changing seasons as the dog readies its body for the extreme winter and summer weather. Lots of grooming is needed here to prevent matting. Q: Do worms cause dogs to have thin hair? In the end, its coat will look dull, thin, and brittle. This condition can be due to regular heavy shedding or poor diet. However, you should also rule out other possibilities like health problems, compulsive behavior, pregnancy, and old age. All of these factors can cause hair thinning in dogs if not addressed right away. Golden Retrievers are double-coated canines. They have a waterproof topcoat and a downy, soft undercoat. Their coat gets thinner for the summer, and they grow thicker fur for the winter. Is my Golden Retriever shedding too much? Certain factors can contribute to how much shedding your Golden Retriever is experiencing. But some health issues might be the reason why your Golden Retriever is shedding more than average. Allergies Goldens with allergic reactions to food, pollen, or even their shampoo, tend to have loose hair follicles. What encourages scratching is their irritated skin. Dogs with allergies can also suffer from itchy eyes, ears, paws, armpits, and private parts. They might also be prone to ear and eye infections. If you notice your pet excessively licking her body parts, it can be a sign of hypersensitivity. If you notice an infestation, please avoid going to the groomers! Use anti-tick and anti-mite shampoos or insecticides. You also want to clean their bedding and any areas they frequently lie on. Stress Like humans, stress can cause excessive hair loss in dogs, especially those who are extremely sensitive and have anxiety. Even loud noises coming from construction nearby, or a change of scenery or routine can be such a hassle for your fido. An under-stimulated dog can also be stressed, so she should always have plenty of exercise. If you still see clumps of hair falling out from your Golden Retriever or collecting in some parts of the house, it might be time you bring her to the vet. Hormonal changes Sterilizing your dog will increase shedding due to hormone fluctuation. Expect your newly-fixed Golden Retriever to shed more in the coming months, which is more noticeable in males. Pregnancy and lactation can increase shedding, as well. You can give her a supplement, but the hair loss should be a normal thing. Poor coats that shed easily can be because of thyroid problems. Hyperthyroidism can be treated if diagnosed early. Watch out for warning signs, including unexplainable weight gain, cold intolerance, and lethargy. Medication Is your dog on any form of medication? Some, such as corticosteroids , can increase shedding. If that is the case, speak to your vet and see if you can try a different brand instead. How to minimize Golden Retriever shedding All mammals lose their hair, even humans. Brushing can do most of the job Brush your dog daily with a slicker brush! If daily brushing seems like a chore, it can be done three times a week, at the very least. Bathing can help remove loosened fur through massaging. This will help with cleanup and stop your pipes from clogging. When he paddles through the water, the current will wash them right off. Just make sure you rinse the chlorine off once your Goldie gets out of the pool. Believe it or not, diet has a good and bad effect on their coat Healthy dogs often have healthy coats. You can avoid specific health issues by picking the right diet for your Golden Retriever. Avoid fillers in the recipe and make sure their kibble is made from high-quality ingredients, like protein. Omega-3 oil is also great for their coat. You might need to try out different brands to find one that is suitable for your Golden Retriever. She should also have access to fresh, clean water at all times. Dehydration leads to dry skin, which can cause itching and hair fall. Does shaving a Golden Retriever help with shedding? No, it would be best if you never shave your Golden Retriever or any double-coated dog. It will damage their fur and can even cause skin problems. Shaving means removing their protection against elements and their ability to adapt to weather changes. This can increase the risk of heat strokes and sunburn. Do note that some professionals and owners do not encourage the use of de-shedding tools, like Furminators. As an alternative, they recommend using a pin brush, along with an undercoat rake. If you prefer de-shedding tools, we advise that you only use it on your Goldie once a week. If you have the basic grooming tools, you can do it at home or bring your pup to a trusted groomer for some pampering. They usually use a high-powered dryer, which can remove much of their loose fur and effectively reduce shedding for a few weeks. A wet-tissue sweeper will do for wooden, laminated, or tile flooring. Swiffer is a popular choice on Amazon. Lint rollers or lint brushes are also a must-have in every household with a shedding pet like the Golden Retriever. Why is Your Golden Retriever is Losing Hair in Clumps Golden Retrievers are heavy shedders, so finding hair around the house is quite a normal thing for golden retriever owners. However, finding clumps of hair is not normal, and neither is having their hair coming out in clumps while brushing them or even petting them. If you notice that clumps of hair are taken off their coats while brushing them or find their coats missing batches of hair, you should try to first identify the cause why your dog is losing this hair and then look at the possible treatments. Before we start, is your dog losing hair only on their face? If so, check out why dogs lose hair around the eyes here. Your dog will also be sensitive to the touch as their skin will be irritated. What is it? Hot Spots are a bacterial infection that caused the skin to have red inflamed skin lesions. They may contain pus and they appear rather quickly, they could appear literally overnight. Treatment: To treat the hot spots, you will need to soothe the inflamed areas and help your dog recover. Here are the steps to treat hot spots in dogs: Shave or clip the area to get air to reach the infected skin and dry it. And to uncover how bad the damage is, most of the infection could be hiding under matted hair. Make sure to shave the whole area. If the infection is severe, you should leave the shaving to your vet. Use cool water and a gentle skin cleanser to clean the area. Cool compress the infected area two to four times daily with a cool wet washcloth Use medications as prescribed by your vet. They may prescribe oral antibiotics, special shampoos, or topical drying sprays. Use and E-collar on your dog To prevent the scratching. Hypothyroidism How to Tell: Common signs of hypothyroidism in Golden Retrievers include the loss of hair or the thinning of it, dull hair coat, excessive shedding or scaling, weight gain, a reduced ability to tolerate the cold, and overall reduced activity. Usually, hair loss happens all over the body with the exception of the head and legs, and is not accompanied by skin redness or itching. Some dogs will have their skins become thicker and will see an increased skin pigment in areas of friction such as their armpits. They may also have ear pain with redness and bad odor, and they may also develop itchy skin that results in sores on the body. Larger breeds — such as golden retrievers — are more prone to Hypothyroidism than smaller dogs. Treatment If you suspect your dog has hypothyroidism, you need to take them to the vet for a diagnosis. If your vet indeed diagnoses your dog with hypothyroidism, he will prescribe oral replacement hormone for the dog. Unfortunately, Hypothyroidism is not curable, but it is manageable with the medications. Your dog will need to take the replacement hormone for the rest of their lives. For 4 to 6 weeks after the diagnosis, your dog will take the medication twice daily and their fur will start to regrow normally, and most dogs will then have their dosage lowered to only once daily for the remainder of their lives given that their condition remains stable — which is the norm. These are 7 tried and tested home remedies that have proven effective over the years and have never failed me or the hundreds of people I recommended these solutions to. Allergic Reactions How to Tell Allergic reactions take little time to show themselves, so you simply need to take a look back at what your dog has eaten or touched in the last couple of hours to have your suspects. Common symptoms of allergies in dogs, or allergic reactions, include Itchiness, scratching, swelling of their face, lips, ear flaps, eyelids, or ears , diarrhea, vomiting, and sneezing. Dogs can have allergic reactions to certain foods or certain chemicals as do humans. The most common food allergens in dogs are protein, and especially proteins from dairy products. Dogs can also be allergic to beef, lamp, gluten, chicken, and chicken eggs. Dogs can also have allergic reactions to certain chemicals that can be used in their treats or in their shampoos. They can also have allergic reactions to certain materials used in things that they come in contact with frequently. Treatment You can give your dog Benadryl diphenhydramine , Zyrtec cetirizine , and Claritin loratadine to relieve the allergic symptoms. Beware that these antihistamines can cause some dogs to be drowsy and others to be hyperactive. Dry skin is a problem that can have many root causes. Your dog can also have a dry skin as a symptom of a larger problem such as mange or other skin issues. By the way, If you think your dog has dandruff because of something else, check out why does your dog has dandruff and 6 solutions here. These beautiful dogs shed hair moderately throughout the year. For many golden retrievers, this shedding ramps up twice a year during the spring and fall seasons. If you want to research a broader range of pet vacuums check out the best vacuum cleaners as tested by ModernCastle. You should expect a lot of hair to escape from your golden at this time as they blow their coats, ready to grow in entirely new ones for summer and winter, respectively. Why do Golden Retrievers Shed? Golden retrievers are one of a few dog breeds that are equipped with a double coat, composed of a thick, downy undercoat and an oily, waterproof outer coat. This amazing duality is what makes the golden retriever so resilient to different weather types and able to spend lots of time outdoors and in the water. The undercoat adapts to the weather and the temperature needs of your dog — during the cold winter months, they will grow an extra thick undercoat, before shedding much of it during the spring. This is why shedding is so heavy during spring and fall: in spring, your golden is getting rid of their thick winter coat, and in fall getting rid of their lighter summer coat to make way for the cold winter coat growth. As a general rule, the hotter the place you live, the more your golden retriever will shed as they need less hair to stay warm. Most shedding in golden retrievers is entirely normal and natural, although there are a few health reasons that can contribute to heavier shedding than normal. Another issue that can cause increased shedding is parasites — particularly fleas and ticks. Make sure that your golden retriever is up to date with their flea and tick prevention treatment and consider investing in some anti-parasite cleaning sprays and shampoos. Stress can also cause increased shedding in golden retrievers — for instance, moving home or a change in the family dynamics. Although golden retrievers will always shed some hair thanks to their double coat, there are some tips and tricks you can use to ensure that the shedding is minimal and manageable. Firstly, you should commit to a daily brushing schedule. This will allow for you to remove the dead hair straight from your dog before it falls off and becomes entangled in your carpets and furniture. It will also reduce any matting and tangles. That means feeding your dog a healthy, balanced diet and avoiding anything that they could be allergic to, or low-quality dog food that is stuffed with filler instead of nutrients. As well as reducing shedding, it will also reduce the opportunity for matts and painful tangles. Absolutely not! This will leave your dog at risk of sunburn and heatstroke and will affect the way that their hair grows back. Many hormonal imbalances can lead to hair loss in Golden Retrievers. Causes of Golden Retriever losing hair in clumps are dry skin, parasites, hypothyroidism, allergies, hot spots, poor nutrition, and other health conditions. Common Golden Retriever allergens are dairy protein, beef, lamb, gluten, chicken eggs, and chicken. Golden Retrievers may also be allergic to chemicals that are commonly used to produce dog shampoos. In addition, Golden Retrievers may also be allergic to certain materials. Allergic reactions in the form of hair loss in clumps take some time to manifest. Parasites Hair loss in clumps as a result of parasites is undoubtedly quite alarming. However, your Golden Retriever may be losing hair in clumps because of microscopic mites. This discomfort causes your Golden Retriever to vigorously scratch, bite and lick themselves — ultimately leading to them losing hair in clumps. Symptoms of parasites are hair loss, itchiness, lesions, dull fur coat, visually seeing parasites, and red skin. There are two types of parasites internal and external parasites. When Golden Retrievers age, they typically develop alopecia or hypotrichosis. On the other hand, as your Golden Retriever ages and loses hair, their hair does not grow back as quickly as it did when they were younger. This is because their cells also age, and cell activity reduce when dogs get older, which contributes to gray hairs and increased hair loss. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland receives a significantly lower amount of thyroxine hormone than it requires to function normally. Even though this can affect Golden Retrievers of various ages, this condition primarily manifests in middle-aged Golden Retrievers between 4 to 10 years old. This fact has yet to be scientifically explained, but neutered Golden Retrievers are more susceptible to this condition. Hypothyroidism is caused by an immune-mediated disease — lymphocytic. Fortunately, this condition is not life-threatening. Treatment for hypothyroidism includes your Golden Retriever taking oral medication for a large portion of their life, and in some cases, it would be for the rest of their life. Do not be surprised if your dog falls asleep with no wounds by wakes up with quite a few all over his body. Hot spots are generally triggered by your Golden Retriever scratching, licking, and nibbling at the infected area to ease the irritation. If the wounds are not treated and are left to dwell, your Golden Retriever may develop a secondary bacterial infection. Dry skin can also be a symptom of a more severe skin condition. Generally, people say that you should bathe your dog only as often as necessary, but when you have a Golden Retriever, the situation is a bit different. Golden Retrievers have fur that attracts toxins, dirt, and dust. This means that you need to bathe them slightly more often. When your Golden Retriever is losing hair in clumps, they need their skin to be soothed and cleansed, so you need to bathe your Golden Retriever between 2 to 3 times a week. Medication Suppose your Golden Retriever has a disease or other medical condition that causes them to lose hair in clumps. In that case, you can see a medical professional who will prescribe the necessary medication to help your dog. If your Golden Retriever is not getting the necessary nutrients, their hair will fall out in clumps because they are not supported by the appropriate nutrients. Organic Food is nutrient-dense and healthy for your Golden Retriever. Many organic food brands ensure, as far as possible, that their food does not cause your dog to experience an allergic reaction. A change in diet takes a while for you to see the difference; however, you can rip more benefits by making the necessary changes as soon as you can. Remember that the longer you refuse to make the required change, the more your Golden Retriever is in discomfort. Supplements Sometimes your dog cannot get all their necessary nutrients in the correct amount simply from their dog food. In such situations, you should consider getting some nutritional supplements for your dog. Supplements such as fish oil contain omega-3 fatty acids. Shampoo Failing to bathe your Golden Retriever correctly results in a mite and tick infestation. To help your Golden Retriever lose hair in clumps, you need to introduce medicated shampoo to their grooming routine. The longer you take to identify the cause, the longer your Golden Retriever will be in discomfort. Early diagnosis can spare you and your Golden Retriever a whole lot of trouble. Your veterinarian would also be able to tell you exactly how you should go about treating your Golden Retriever. These collars are long-lasting and last up to months. You can use these collars alongside your normal ID collars. Old Golden Retriever loses their hair because of aging, skin allergies, dry skin, poor diet, parasites, infestation of fleas, and certain health conditions. If your Golden Retriever manifests abnormal shedding, you should consult a vet. Your Golden Retriever could be losing hair because of medical conditions such as hypothyroidism or an allergic reaction. In some cases, your Golden Retriever may be losing hair due to age, parasites, dry skin, or skin infections. After your Golden Retriever gives birth, it is normal for her to lose hair. The loss of hair is an aftermath of being in labor; however, you should consult your veterinarian if she displays other symptoms along with losing hair. Your Golden Retriever could be losing hair on their tail because of flea allergy dermatitis. It is usual for your Golden Retriever puppy to lose their hair because it is part of their growth. They lose their puppyhood fur, and their fur is replaced with stronger strands. However, if they lose an excessive amount of fur, it may indicate a medical issue or poor nourishment. Conclusion When your Golden Retriever is losing hair in clumps, it could be the result of poor nourishment, and in some cases, your Golden Retriever may be a symptom of allergies, a disease, or parasites. When you notice that your Golden Retriever is losing hair in clumps, you should take them to the veterinarian as soon as you can. Ensure that your dog does not suffer unnecessarily by having them diagnosed as soon as you can. That said, piles of their golden mane can create a hairy situation—especially if your work pants get in the way. Weekly brushing will help you mitigate hairy couches and unsightly pant bottoms and give you an opportunity to bond with your pup. The American Kennel Club recommends brushing golden retrievers before bath time. During their youth, golden retrievers are often bundles of energy. Pay attention to age — When your dog is a puppy, use a soft brush until their full double coat has grown in. Then, you can start to use a slick shedding-specific brush that can rake their undercoat. We recommend: A large pin brush — Most of your brushing on a golden retriever should be done with a pin brush. The wide and sturdy bristles of a pin brush are essential for raking out debris your golden retriever probably gets into some messes! Getting a golden retriever into the tub can sometimes be an adventure all on its own. These dogs were bred to fetch ducks from lakes, so they have evolved coats that are highly water resistant. Step 3: Rinse twice — Once again, golden retrievers have really thick coats! Just go with it. Step 5: Towel them dry — For a bit of extra pampering, you might also try a canine blow dryer. Suggestion: Try a Foaming Shampoo Bath time with a golden retriever can sometimes turn into a wrestling match. While that kind of sounds like fun, there are times when we all wish shampooing the pooch was a little easier. And as you now know, healthy coats lead to less shedding. Tumbleweed-like furballs are what you signed up for when you adopted a golden retriever. We also know that it can be hard to keep your golden retriever off the furniture and out of your bed. These buddies just want to be around their humans. However, golden retrievers are super smart, love positive reinforcement and, like all dogs, are happy to have their own space. By training your golden retriever to sleep in a dog bed instead of on the furniture , you can keep most of their shedding in a designated area. When Do Golden Retrievers Shed? Double-coated dogs will shed some fur year-round, but there are two particular times of the year when their shedding is at the most extreme. In the spring — During the spring, your golden retriever will shed their thick, winterized undercoat in order to make way for a lighter weight summer coat. Just in time for allergy season! In the fall — Just as summer starts to fade, your golden retriever will get rid of that lighter undercoat in order to replace it with a thicker winter coat. Of course, this timeline can change depending on your local climate. That means that dogs who spend a lot of time outdoors will have more pronounced shedding cycles, whereas homebody indoor dogs can end up shedding consistently throughout the year. If you notice heavy shedding, especially out of the golden retriever shedding season, or that their fur appears to be thinning, that could be a sign of golden retriever skin issues or any other health concern. As such, consult your veterinarian if you notice irregular pet hair loss. The shampoo sprays on, foams instantly, and rinses fast—which makes cleaning up almost as fun as getting dirty. In Newfoundland, the breed disappeared because of government restrictions and tax laws. Families were allowed to keep no more than one dog, and owning a female was highly taxed, so girl puppies were culled from litters. In England, however, the breed survived, and the Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a distinct breed in .They also top the list in Canada and England. Labrador Retriever Size Males stand .Females stand .Aside from a winning personality, they have the intelligence and eagerness to please that make them easy to train. Training is definitely necessary because this breed has a lot of energy and exuberance. The working heritage of the Lab means they are active. This breed needs activity, both physical and mental, to keep them happy. There is some variation in the activity level of Labs: some are rowdy, others are more laid back. All thrive on activity. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : This is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem or medication to control the pain. Osteochondrosis Dissecans OCD : This orthopedic condition, caused by improper growth of cartilage in the joints, usually occurs in the elbows, but it has been seen in the shoulders, as well. It causes a painful stiffening of the joint, to the point that the dog is unable to bend his elbow. It can be detected in dogs as early as four to nine months of age. Cataracts : As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow over time. Cataracts can usually be surgically removed with good results. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose their daytime vision, as well. Many dogs adapt to limited or complete vision loss very well, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Epilepsy : Labs can suffer from epilepsy, which causes mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Puppies are born with TVD, which is a malformation of the tricuspid valve on the right side of the heart. It can be mild or severe; some dogs live with no symptoms, others die. TVD is detected by ultrasound. Research is ongoing to learn how widespread it is in the breed, as well as treatment. Myopathy : Myopathy affects the muscles and nervous system. The first signs are seen early, as young as six weeks and often by seven months of age. A puppy with myopathy is tired, stiff when he walks and trots. He may collapse after exercise. In time, the muscles atrophy and the dog can barely stand or walk. There is no treatment, but rest and keeping the dog warm seems to reduce symptoms. Dogs with myopathy should not be bred because it is considered a heritable disease. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid themselves of the excess air in their stomach, and blood flow to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is drooling excessively, and retching without throwing up. Theyalso may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Acute Moist Dermatitis: Acute moist dermatitis is a skin condition in which the skin red and inflamed. It is caused by a bacterial infection. The more common name of this health concern is hot spots. Treatment includes clipping the hair, bathing in medicated shampoo, and antibiotics. Cold Tail : Cold tail is a benign, though painful condition common to Labs and other retrievers. The dog may bite at the tail. It is thought to be a problem with the muscles between the vertebrae in the tail. Weekly checking and cleaning if necessary helps prevent infection. Labrador Retriever Care The lovable Lab needs to be around their family, and is definitely not a backyard dog. Labs show some variation in their activity levels, but all of them need activity, both physical and mental. Daily minute walks, a romp at the dog park, or a game of fetch, are a few ways to help your Lab burn off energy. However, a puppy should not be taken for too long walks and should play for a few minutes at a time. It is up to you to end play and training sessions. Without training, a rambunctious Lab puppy will soon grow to be a very large, rowdy dog. Luckily, Labs take to training well; in fact, they often excel in obedience competitions. Start with puppy kindergarten , which not only teaches your pup good canine manners, but helps them learn how to be comfortable around other dogs and people. Look for a class that uses positive training methods that reward the dog for getting it right, rather than punishing them for getting it wrong. Normal play on grass is fine, as is puppy agility, with its one-inch jumps. Labrador Retriever Feeding Recommended daily amount: 2. They are almost square in appearance, with a strong body and sturdy legs. The maximum height for a male is 24 inches, which puts them in the medium-size dog category, but their sturdy build can make them seem much larger. Weights range from 85 pounds for a large male to 55 pounds for a smaller female. Field line bred dogs are often taller and somewhat thinner in build. Labrador retrievers are easily recognized by their broad head, drop ears and large, expressive eyes. Two trademarks of the Lab are the thick but fairly short double coat, which is very water repellent, and the well known "otter tail. The feet are described as "webbed," with longer skin between the toes to aid in swimming. The Labrador retriever is a moderately fast maturing breed, reaching adult height from six to 12 months, but possibly still filling out up to 2 years of age. Many Labs reach 12 to 14 years of age. Personality: In general, Labrador retrievers are excellent family dogs, as long as you keep in mind their need for exercise and training. These are dogs bred to work and work hard and they love to have jobs to do, particularly retrieving. Labs are usually good with other dogs, other pets, and children as long as training has toned down their natural exuberance. They are strong dogs and need some obedience training at an early age or they can be seen dragging their owners down the street at will. Owing to their energetic nature, Labradors who are left alone or not well exercised can become destructive — chewing, digging and barking to excess. The field line dogs are especially high-energy dogs, while some of the show line dogs become perfect couch potatoes at an early age. Chewing can be a problem because the strong retrieve urge gives them an oral fixation. Sturdy chew toys, exercise and training all help with this. Living With: Obviously, Labradors have a number of endearing traits or they would not be so popular. They are intelligent and fairly easy to train, partly from their desire to work with people. They are "easy keepers" and can become overweight if they are not exercised and food portions adjusted as needed. Labs are excellent family dogs because they do want to be with people and many do not do well as kennel dogs. Labradors do tend to be protective of their families and homes but are usually happy to greet company, too. With the strong retrieving instinct, they can develop into destructive chewers if not given appropriate toys and guidance. Labs may tend to "mouth" people and the solution is often simply to give them a toy to carry around, so their mouths are already full! These are very strong dogs and early training is necessary to have a dog that walks nicely on lead. The wonderful double coat that keeps the Labrador warm while retrieving in icy water also gives this breed top billing as shedders. Normally, their coats do fine with a quick weekly grooming, but at shedding time daily grooming is needed. The amount of exercise they need varies with the different lines: field line dogs can run all day, whereas show line dogs only need moderate exercise. History: Early in the s, some of the multipurpose dogs used in North America mostly Canada by hunters were shipped back to England. Many of these "water dogs" were of the Newfoundland type, but the smaller ones were often designated "St John's" dogs. In England, the breed was developed and refined probably with some flat-coated retriever input into the breed we recognize today. As is evidenced by their name, Labrador retrievers were bred and selected for their outstanding retrieving abilities, particularly in water. They have worked as partners with duck hunters in all kinds of weather and conditions. Their intelligence and desire to work as a partner with man has led to many other jobs, and to their current status as popular pets. Today, Labradors excel as service and guide dogs, family pets, scenting dogs for the military, customs and arson task force dogs, search and rescue dogs as well as hunting companions and performance dogs. The breed's good nature has propelled it to the number one ranking in popularity in America, a position it intends to keep. Despite their fame as indoor pets, they are even more at home outdoors. It should always be remembered that Labradors are water retrievers at heart and from early on, puppies show a strong desire to carry things around with them and a strong attraction to water, even puddles! Related Pet Care Articles. Dog domestic dog The Labrador Retriever, or simply Labrador, is a British breed of retriever gun dog. It was developed in the United Kingdom from fishing dogs imported from the colony of Newfoundland now a province of Canada , and was named after the Labrador region of that colony. It is among the most commonly kept dogs in several countries, particularly in the European world. The Labrador is friendly, energetic, and playful. It may also be trained as a guide or assistance dog , or for rescue or therapy work. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland fishing dogs was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury , who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are the ancestors of all modern Labradors. John's water dogs bred by European settlers in Newfoundland were first introduced to Britain from ships trading between Canada and Poole in Dorset. These were then bred with British hunting dogs to create what became known as the Labrador Retriever. Early writers have confused the Labrador with the much larger Newfoundland and the Lesser Newfoundland , with Charles St. John even referring to the Lesser Newfoundland as the Newfoundland. Colonel Peter Hawker describes the first Labrador as being not larger than an English Pointer , more often black than other colours, long in its head and nose with a deep chest, fine legs, and short and smooth coat, and did not carry its tail as highly as the Newfoundland. John's breed of these dogs [6] [7] in the fifth edition of his book Introductions to Young Sportsman, published in .Black Chocolate There is a great deal of variety among Labradors. The following characteristics are typical of the conformation show bred bench-bred lines of this breed in the United States and are based on the American Kennel Club standard. Size: Labradors are a medium-large breed. They should be as long from the withers to the base of the tail as they are from the floor to the withers. The AKC standard includes an ideal weight for dogs of 25—36 kg 55—80 lb and for bitches as 25—32 kg 55—70 lb. The coat is water-resistant, so the dog does not get cold when taking to the water in the winter. That means that the dog naturally has a slightly dry, oily coat. Acceptable colours are black, yellow, and chocolate. The eyes should be kind and expressive. Appropriate eye colours are brown and hazel. The lining around the eyes should be black. The ears should hang close to the head and be set slightly above the eyes. Jaws: The jaws should be strong and powerful. The muzzle should be of medium length and should not be too tapered. The jaws should hang slightly and curve gracefully back. Body: The body should have a powerful and muscular build. The tail and coat are designated "distinctive [or distinguishing] features" of the Labrador by both the Kennel Club and AKC. If a dog carried wild type alleles at all three loci, the dog will have a yellow coat. If a dog has a loss-of-function mutation at MC1R, it will also have a yellow coat, regardless of their genotype at the other two loci. Within the breed, this trait is not visible. Show and field lines[ edit ] Head and muzzle appearance: field left , and show right , showing the shorter muzzle length, more solid appearance head, and "pronounced" stop of the latter As a result of specialised breeding, there are significant differences between field and trial-bred and show-bred lines of Labradors. In the United States, the former are sometimes mistakenly referred to as "American" and the latter as "English", in fact, both field and show types are bred in both countries and all Labrador Retrievers are descended from British lines. In this experiment, German Shepherds had the highest chance of not completing it. However, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers had a higher success rate after going through longer training than the training required for Labrador Retrievers. For retrieving the Labrador Retriever has a soft mouth , a trait that allows it to carry game and waterfowl without damaging it. It continues in that role today, along with the Leonberger , Newfoundland and Golden Retriever dogs; they are used at the Italian School of Canine Lifeguard. During the Vietnam War they were used as scout dogs to track down dead or wounded soldiers or enemy positions. Notable issues related to health and well-being include inherited disorders and obesity most are missing all or parts of the appetite-regulating POMC gene. As of , it was widely considered the most popular breed in the world. Vocality level 4 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament Few breeds so richly deserve their popularity as does the Labrador Retriever. When trained, the breed is obedient and amiable and tolerates the antics of children, other dogs, and other pets. The Lab is a calm house dog, playful yard dog, and intense field dog, all on the same day. Labs are eager to please, enjoys learning, and excel in obedience. It is a powerful breed that loves to swim and retrieve. Labradors need daily physical and mental challenges to keep occupied. A bored Lab can get into trouble! Upkeep Labradors are active and sociable dogs. They need daily exercise, preferably in the form of retrieving and swimming. Owners with swimming pools either must fence them out or be prepared to share the pool with dogs. The Lab coat sheds water easily. Weekly brushing is needed to remove dead hair. Health Major concerns: CHD, elbow dysplasia, OCD, obesity, patellar luxation Minor concerns: cataract, CPRA, hot spots, retinal dysplasia, hypothyroidism Occasionally seen: diabetes, entropion, distichiasis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse Suggested tests: hip, elbow, eye, exercise-induced collapse DNA , centronuclear myopathy , knee Life span: 10—12 years History The original Labradors were all-purpose water dogs originating in Newfoundland, not Labrador. Not only did the breed not originate in Labrador, but it also was not originally called the Labrador Retriever. These dogs—medium-sized black dogs with close hair—not only retrieved game but also retrieved fish, pulled small fishing boats through icy water and helped the fisherman in any task involving swimming. Eventually, the breed died out in Newfoundland in large part because of a heavy dog tax. However, a core of Labradors had been taken to England in the early s, and it is from these dogs, along with crosses to other retrievers, that the breed continued. It was also in England that the breed earned its reputation as an extraordinary retriever of upland game. Initially, black labs were favored over yellow or chocolate colors. By the early s, the other colors had become more accepted. The popularity of this breed has grown steadily until the Labrador Retriever became the most popular breed in America in and remains so today. Related Content.

An adult Newfypoo can stand 24 to 32 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 70 to pounds. Ultimately, the size will depend on the size of each parent and is unpredictable. Coat The Newfypoo typically has a thick, curly, oily, and water-resistant coat. Most common colors are black, brown, and golden with the occasions multicolor coming through with some breedings. Time Requirements Highly inteligent and fairly active, Newfypoos are not the easiest of breeds to raise. They need at least an hour of activity a day and can experience separation anxiety if left alone for long stretches of time. Having an owner with time to spend with their pup is ideal for this breed. Health Concerns As with any mixed-breed dog, you can expect fewer genetic problems than with either parent breeds. With that said, however, you should also anticipate a tendency towards any disease common in those same breeds. Life Span Did You Know? The Newfypoo is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States and is a cross between a Newfoundland and a Poodle. As with many crosses with Poodles, the goal is the get all of the great traits of both breeds plus a low-shedding coat. This is not always guaranteed with a cross-breed because the puppies can take on any combination of traits from one or both parents. Regardless of their coat, a Newfypoo tends to have a friendly and loving disposition that makes a great family pet. Although the Newfypoo is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations like the International Designer Canine Registry, International Canine Association, and more. Although the Newfypoo grows up to be a big dog, they are notoriously gentle giants. They have a kind, loving, and friendly disposition with a playful, energetic personality. They are loyal and affectionate. Newfypoos also tend to be even-tempered and patient. They get along well with just about everyone including children, other dogs, and other pets. They also often take on the role of family protector and make good watchdogs. The Newfypoo is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their large size, they do not tend to be a good fit for apartment living. They are better suited to larger homes and will love running around a yard. Because these big dogs tend to be fluffy, they tend to do better in moderate and cooler climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond closely with their families. Since the Newfypoo is a mixed-breed, they can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. For this designer dog breed, potential health issues to be aware of include patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, bone problems, a heart condition called subvalvular aortic stenosis, and eye conditions like progressive retinal atrophy and cherry eye. Responsible breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing potential issues on to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Both of the parent breeds of the Newfypoo are highly intelligent, eager to please, and highly trainable. The same should be true for the Newfypoo. They tend to pick up on things quickly and tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods focused on reward and praise. Because a mixed-breed can take on any combination of characteristics from the parents, your Newfypoo could end up with a Newfoundland coat, a Poodle coat, or some combination of both of them. As such, you need to be prepared for coat care regardless of coat type. Should your Newfypoo have a Newfoundland coat, they will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year. Brushing weekly or a few times a week is usually sufficient, but it may be a good idea to move to daily brushing during heavier shedding sessions. Bathing is on an as-needed basis. Should your Newfypoo inherit the Poodle coat, they will be low-shedding, but not low-maintenance. Professional grooming needs to happen every weeks. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning them as needed can help prevent ear infections. Keeping it a positive experience and getting them used to it early on makes basic grooming and maintenance much easier as your puppy grows into a large dog. The Newfypoo has a moderate activity level. They do need daily vigorous activity to stay happy and healthy, but they take time to relax as well. Daily walks plus some playtime and extra activity are usually sufficient for this dog. Their large frame and joints do not make them a good fit for long-distance running, but your Newfypoo may enjoy running around with you briefly, going on hikes, taking trips to the dog park, and more. A fully-grown Newfypoo usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. A Newfypoo generally lives years. Although Newfypoo is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes called a Newdle, Newfydoodle, Newfoundlandoodle, Newfoundlandpoo, Poofoundland, or simply a Newfoundland Poodle Mix. Rated 5 out of 5 stars By Dlfly on Jul 19, Great puppy food Started our golden puppy on a name brand puppy food that he was on from the breeder. Puppy within a couple of weeks started having loose stools to explosive diarrhea when we brought him home. After visit to vets and antibiotics vet recommended we switched to this food slowly with a bland diet. Doing fabulous on this food and he is growing appropriately. Kibbles are a great size. Using the food also as training treats. Chewy was awesome to work with to get his previous full bag of food donated to a no kill shelter. Only food we recommend to our buyers and also to others. They love this kibble so much, they are growing big and strong. As a dog family, we are very Impressed with Royal Canin as a brand; their older sister is on a Prescription Diet with Royal Canin as well so we have switched all of our food over to them. Cannot recommend them enough! I have always fed our Dogs Royal Canin and they did great. Had a German Shepherd that lived to almost 15 years old which I attribute to good food, exercise and love. Our puppy is thriving now. She eats every single feeding, no more diarrhea and she is growing well. My puppy loves it and prefers it over the Purina Pro Plan puppy lamb that his breeder started him on, I've been making the transition and he really likes it. Royal Canin always smells fresh and like real food when you open the bag! A good sign! I have a new puppy and she was having soft stools on the food the breeder was using. I switched her to this and fixed the problem. It took me forever to pick a food, but happy I picked this one. I use it for training treats also. How could I not give this puppy food 5 stars? Breeder started our puppy on this food and then gave us the other option of Purina Pro Plan. My thought was to gradually switch to the Purina based on the cost difference. I tried but even with mixing half and half, we had diarrhea all over in a puppy that was already housebroken. I donated the huge bag of Purina and switched back to Royal Canin and the problem was resolved. Lesson learned and the extra cost is totally worth it. Starch is also required for extrusion in dry foods. Excessive carbohydrate is an indicator of food quality as it can be used to reduce manufacturing cost. Foods that are high in carbohydrate can raise insulin and cause obesity. Some studies also show that dogs fed a high carbohydrate content have changes to their gut bacteria. Cellulose is an insoluble fiber made from wood pulp and is the least expensive and least functional form of fiber since it's very poorly fermented. It is included to firm stools. You will want to see beef, salmon or chicken, not animal, fish or poultry. Unnamed protein sources are of much lower quality, especially meals, which are typically from rendered waste. They are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which can cause systemic and gut inflammation. Other oils like soybean are highly processed and may contain trans fats. Studies shows that ultra processed foods are linked to a higher rate of all-cause mortality in humans. Natural antioxidants like mixed tocopherols are preferred as artificial antioxidants have limited toxicity studies and may be linked to cancer.
best puppy dog food for german shepherds - Health and breeding information What diseases can occur in Cocker Spaniel and Pug mix. Cocker Spaniel Pug mixes are popular dog owners because they combine a combination of both breeds. They are also known as a Carlin mix and are unique and one of a kind in every way. However, they can also be more prone to certain diseases and health problems than other dog breeds. One of the most common health problems seen in Cocker Spaniel Pug mixes is a respiratory disorder. This happens when the dog's upper airways are severely constricted, causing him to breathe heavily and not get enough oxygen. In more severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia and lung failure. Regular visits to the veterinarian can help diagnose and treat these problems. Another common problem in Cocker Spaniel Pug mixes is patellar luxation. This occurs when the kneecap is either prematurely or improperly seated in the joint. While this is not necessarily life threatening, it can lead to health problems that require early treatment and care. Other common, but not life-threatening, problems that occur in Cocker Spaniel Pug mixes include gingivitis, torn cruciate ligaments, allergies, and skin problems. Because these problems often require early treatment, you should visit your veterinarian regularly to make sure your dog is getting all the necessary vaccines and tests. It is important to remember that Cocker Spaniel Pug mixes can be sensitive to stress. Therefore, it is important to provide them with a calm, stress-free home where they can relax and stay away from anything that might upset them. Overall, Cocker Spaniel Pug mixes are a popular breed. Although they can be more prone to certain diseases and health issues than other dog breeds, proper handling and care can help them live a happy and healthy life. What does this mixed breed look like? A Cocker Spaniel and Pug mixed breed is a sociable and playful breed. It has a medium length, dense and fluffy coat. The color is usually chocolate brown or black with white markings. Sometimes the female has lighter colors such as cream, dark brown or blackish brown coat. The color of the undercoat is usually lighter than the top. The head and tail of the dog are larger compared to other breeds, which gives a very unique appearance. What are breed characteristics of this mix dog? A Cocker Spaniel and Pug mix usually has a short, soft coat with varying shades of color. The ears are usually long and hang down. The head is round and the nose is usually black. The body is muscular, the legs are short and strong. The root of the tail is slightly curved over the back. The mongrel has a weight between 4. Fur length. Lifespan Sociability When you are looking for the perfect puppy for your home, one of the best things you should do is find out everything about the dog that you can, so you know what to expect. Cocker Pugs tend to be loyal and affectionate dogs. They create strong bonds with their human companions and are a great choice for families. Their easily trained and are eager to play with anyone. The mix of the personalities of the Cocker Spaniel and the Pug balance each other out. They result in being intelligent and loving dogs. You need to exercise Cocker Pugs daily, otherwise, they will become pudgy. They need lots of attention. These dogs are very intelligent, but they are often stubborn. Many of them are motivated by treats or food. Cocker Spaniels are happy , affectionate, and social. They are also good with other dogs and children when socialized early, as well as being sweet and gentle. They always want to please you and they crave your attention. Cocker Spaniels are also energetic, so they love to explore and play. Pugs are known as being clowns, while at the same time being intelligent and not at all aggressive. They love spending time with you, and they do their best to take all of your attention. These dogs can also be lazy, which often will cause chubbiness. They have low levels of energy and are glad to simply hang out. If you are noticing that your Cocker Pug is taking after their pug parent, make sure that you are giving them exercise daily. Your dog will be good with children and other dogs , but they can be strong-willed and stubborn. Many times, the genes from the parents of the puppy will balance one another out, resulting in an intelligent, loving and charming companion. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Not much is known about cats. This will be covered when you purchase high-quality dog food. Fats also add Omega-6 and omega-3 to their diet, which is necessary for their skin, coat, heart, and brain. Cocker Pugs generally are social dogs that will enjoy going to a dog park and making some new friends. However, your dog may be more laidback, which means they are happy to simply lay around. Unfortunately, this can make them gain weight. Walking them daily so they get exercise will be needed to keep your dog from becoming overweight. Since they have shorter snouts, these dogs may be more heat sensitive. Therefore, you will need patience while training them. Some of these hybrids can be very stubborn. You can usually motivate your Cocker Pug with food, so use this to your advantage. You also want to use positive reinforcement, combining small treats and vocal praise for rewards during training. This can make them lose interest in their training. Their nails should be trimmed monthly, either by you, your vet, or by your groomer. Since he has floppy ears, you will need to keep them clean to prevent infections due to the buildup of bacteria. Your vet will be able to recommend a wash for you to use. You may need to bathe him each month, particularly if he loves rolling in the grass and dirt while outside. Brush his teeth each week to so that you stop tartar from accumulating. One of the biggest things is the possibility of it having a brachycephalic head with a short snout. If your dog has a face that is similar to a pug , they are going to have more health issues than if it has a Cocker Spaniel head. These dogs are occasionally diagnosed with kidney disease and obesity, and they may need tests such as hip x-rays, thyroid tests, skin scrapings, allergy tests, electrocardiograms, biopsies, and others. Minor Conditions. Similarly, it is generally accepted that this mixed-breed was first created in America, but records are lacking. As this new breed has such a limited history, we need to look to its parents to get a better idea of its background. The Spaniel is believed to be of Spanish origin, and records date back to the s. Historically used as a gun dog, the Cocker Spaniel would hunt on land. Though many modern Cocker Spaniels are kept as companion animals and show dogs they are still widely used as working dogs today. Around years ago, the English Cocker Spaniel gave rise to the American Cocker Spaniel — a smaller and daintier dog with little sporting ability. The Pug dog has been around a lot longer than the Cocker Spaniel and has truly ancient roots. In fact, experts agree that Pugs have been in China since before the year B. They have always been a lap dog and to this day remain superb companion animals. Appearance As the Cocker Pug is quite a recently developed breed, there is still a large variability within the population when it comes to their physical appearance. Over time, and with repeated breedings, they will begin to develop a more uniform appearance. On the whole, this breed looks fairly similar to the Puggle, which of course is a Pug crossed with a Beagle. They have a lean and well-muscled body that is compact and supported by long, straight legs. They are always larger than the Pug, measuring up to 45cm and weighing from 8kg to 16kg. Some facial skin folds are likely and these are often more prominent on the nasal bridge. Their eyes are a soulful dark brown and their nose is usually black. The pendulous ears of the Cocker Pug hang loosely beside the face, and while not as large as those of the Spaniel, are certainly wider and longer than those of the Pug. The fur tends to be short and dense, however, a small number of dogs will have the longer and wavier fur as seen on the Cocker spaniel. Fur colour is either black or light fawn. For those that are fawn in colour, they will usually have a dark facial mask. A truly social breed, these dogs enjoy nothing more than spending time with their family and being fawned over. They bond closely to all family members and form particularly strong attachments with any children in the home. They are confident and plucky, able to adapt to a variety of situations and rarely developing anxieties or nervous behaviours. Most Cocker Pugs do well with other dogs, though do need to be introduced to them when still young. Caution is advised around smaller pets and cats, who may be seen as more of a toy to chase than a friend. The perfect house pet, these lap dogs are content to spend the majority of their day relaxing inside, and once they have received their minimum daily exercise requirements should not crave much more attention. Trainability While on one hand the Cocker Pug is eager to please their owner and full of enthusiasm and energy, they can be strong-willed and take patience to train. Some individuals are stubborn and, while they may understand what is being asked of them, can decide they would much rather do something else entirely! Easily distracted, to maintain their attention, training sessions should be kept short and interesting. Positive reinforcement will yield the best results, and both vocal praise and small training treats can be used as rewards. This breed does not react well to negative reinforcement or punishment-based training, which may cause them to lose interest. A low T4 level can cause a myriad of symptoms, including sluggish behaviour, skin infections, alopecia and weight gain. Some straightforward blood tests can diagnose the condition and the treatment is to simply replace the thyroid hormone by giving daily medication. Most dogs will respond very well to the treatment, which will be life-long. Ear Infections Any Spaniel or Spaniel cross with long, floppy ears will be predisposed to ear infections throughout their lifetime. This is because the airflow within the ear canal is reduced and moisture levels and humidity are high. Bacteria and yeast can multiply, leading to chronic and painful infections. Owners can prevent recurring infections by keeping ears clean and dry as much as possible and avoiding the ears getting wet. Dogs with entropion may show signs of discomfort by rubbing at their face or squinting their eyes. Bilateral clear ocular discharge is common and the fur under the eyes may become tear-stained. Entropion is usually fixed with a surgery to improve the positioning of the eyelids and the prognosis tends to be excellent after surgery. For most adults, two thirty-minute walks twice a day is usually sufficient. Though access to a fenced garden is not a necessity, the Cocker Pug enjoys time spent outdoors and will certainly use an outside area if available. They like to play games of fetch and chasing and do quite well in canine sporting activities. Beware under-exercising the Cocker Pug, as they may gain weight quickly. Grooming As most breed members have quite a short coat, they only need to be brushed twice a week or so. Some individuals will have prominent skin folds on their face which may need to be wiped and dried each day, preventing a dermatitis. The biggest grooming consideration when it comes to the Cocker Pug is their ears. Their floppy ears should be checked for any signs of build-up or skin reddening on a daily basis as they are prone to infections. Any wax should be cleaned out and most will benefit from an ear cleaning every two weeks. User reviews There are no user reviews for this listing. Popular Dog Breeds. It is a cross between the Cocker Spaniel and the Pug. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. He was 4 years old on Christmas day. He is full of energy and very strong for a small dog. Very alert, smart, stubborn and loves constant attention. Pedro is absolutely great with kids. I can't tire him out, even on the longest walks. The only time he has embarrassed us is when in the company of people wearing hi-viz clothing, baseball caps and niqab's. Overall he has a fantastic temperament and is always entertaining us with his antics. He was the size of a full-grown Cocker, weighing in at 35 lbs. His ears were long and his snout was short, but not fully pugged. His tail was curled like a Pug. His coat was short, coarse and thick like a Pug, but was wavy by his tail. His eyes were prominent, but not "bugged" like a Pug. He was repeatedly mistaken for a Mastiff puppy, even to the age of nine. Sparky's disposition was even-tempered, tolerant and mellow. He never met a stranger. He had a courageous spirit and feared nothing. He was the happiest dog, and well known for his "full body wag. His tail is like the Cocker Spaniel and docked. He has an extremely soft and shiny jet black coat. He is solid like the Pug but the size of the Cocker. He is the best of both worlds. He was easily to train to sit , lie down, roll over, stay, and pretty much anything. He seems to know what you are saying. He is not too hyper like the Pug, but never runs out of energy for the long walks. Duke is a lap dog; happy and mellow and eager to please, yet our big protector! He is a 6-month-old Cocker Pug. He seems to have the personality of a Cocker; loves to play. He is 25 lb. He is a loving, energetic and adorable pup, with a great temperament. I think he is a perfect example of a beautiful Cocker Spaniel x Pug. In only one month she learned sit, wait, leave it, lie down, and some more of the fun ones: dance, spin, shake, speak and roll over. Her mother is a lb black Pug and her father is a lb. Although she was only 35lbs, she acted as if she were bigger and was the leader of all our dogs. Cudjoe was a great family dog who would never hurt anyone. Unfortunately, she was only 8 when she was diagnosed with cutaneous lymphosarcoma skin cancer and soon after died. She put up a fight to the very end and we were left broken hearted.
