Once they reach eight weeks, changing to dry kibble food is best. We recommend feeding a Labrador puppy dry kibble for the first months before changing to an adult food type. But to remain healthy, owners should know what to feed them. Dog owners should feed a Labrador puppy dry food kibble , wet food, or fresh human food, depending on their budget and lifestyle. There are many options for food for dogs, and it can become challenging to determine which one is the best option for the dog. We have found the best options and listed them below. They help us with our daily tasks, are always there when we need them, and bring great joy to our lives. But, it is essential to ensure that our dog gets the best nutrition possible. They have a lot of energy and need to be fed accordingly. This includes the number of calories, food type, and the number of meals per day. We will explain all of these factors to help understand what to feed these precious animals. A Labrador puppy needs high-quality protein in their diet, so they should not be fed just any type of food. This is why we recommend three food options: dry food or kibble, fresh food or human food, or wet food. We prefer using dry food or kibble in most cases, but it is beneficial to start with wet food for young puppies and transition to dry food after a few weeks. Feeding a puppy human food is possible, but it can be more expensive and requires extra work to stick to a cleaner diet at this age. We have found it to be a healthier and more convenient option for our pets. It is also a good alternative to wet food which can be difficult to store and prepare. The benefits of dry dog food are that it offers the pup a balanced diet that doesn't need refrigeration. It also offers convenience because we can buy it in bulk and store it in the pantry or freezer until needed. Dry dog food is also less expensive than wet food, which is another benefit for pet owners. Fresh Food Human Food Feeding a Labrador puppy a diet of fresh, real human food is one of the best things to do for their health and well-being. It will not only make them happy and content, but it will also keep them healthy. This eliminates the guessing game; they are only fed real, natural foods with no unknown ingredients. However, it will become expensive and require regular cooking and preparation. Wet Food Wet food is recommended for Labrador puppies when they are first born and for the first weeks while they grow. It can be either raw or cooked. Wet food is a good source of water and minerals, which are important in the early days of their life to help them grow strong bones and teeth. It should be given to a puppy as soon as it comes out of its mother's womb, but it must not be given before it starts eating solid foods because it will cause diarrhea. Once they get more mature, moving to kibbles is best. It is known for its low level of grain and carbohydrate content and high protein content. Once they reach the week mark, there are better options to help the puppy continue to develop and grow. This food also helps with digestion and weight management. It also promotes proper bone growth with antioxidants and necessary nutrients like vitamin E. The kibble is also shaped strategically to help puppies who chew fast while helping with jaw growth. Overall, this is the best food option for a Labrador puppy. It is designed for all life stages, from puppies to seniors, and we love the benefits it provides to younger labs. These dogs can be picky eaters and usually need a lot of calories because of their size. This is especially true for puppies so they can grow properly and remain healthy due to their increased risk of health issues. Food Type Labrador puppies' most popular dog foods are kibbles and canned wet food. Kibbles are the best option for a puppy because they are easy to chew and digest. Canned food is a good option for pups who have difficulty chewing or digesting dry food and would benefit from a little moisture in their diet. The food type also depends on the owner. Dry food or kibbles are faster to prepare, while serving human food to a lab puppy requires extensive prep time. Nutritional Value When it comes to nutritional value, we want dog food that has high-quality protein and carbohydrates. This will help the puppy grow strong and healthy. This is why we need to take into account the nutritional value, quality of ingredients, and taste. It should be made with all-natural ingredients that are sourced from human-grade materials such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. A brand should have all the essential nutrients for a pup but still, be low in toxic elements and preservatives too. Dietary Restrictions Lastly, consider the dietary restrictions of the Labrador puppy before choosing a dog food option. This includes any allergies or health concerns for the dog and shopping for something that suits them best. For example, lab puppies must reach a certain carbohydrate and protein number daily. Labradors are also known to have allergies, especially young ones, so planning around this is crucial. A puppy should be fed at least three times a day, with a meal size that is appropriate for its body weight. They should also be given small daily snacks to keep them satisfied and happy, including treats to help with training. We feed our puppies the best that we can. We want to give them all the nutrients and vitamins they need. We also want to make sure that they are getting a balanced diet. The most important thing when feeding a Labrador puppy is that they get enough calories from their food every day. In the first weeks, the puppy should eat four smaller daily meals. Once the lab reaches three months, this can be changed to three meals per day. And after months, we recommend two meals per day. The key is not to change the calories much when the meals change but to simply modify the size of each meal to fit the total daily food amount. Feeding a Labrador puppy is not rocket science, but there are some things everybody should know about what to feed them and when to feed them. We have covered this basis, but changes need to be made as they age. This leads to a common question about changing food to fit the needs of a grown adult Labrador. The dog's age will determine how quickly they grow and how much energy they need. Lab puppies can stick with kibbles for up to 12 months. Increase portions as your puppy grows. Be sure to follow the rule of dog treats. This is about changes over time. Nutritional deficiency or excess can lead to disease and ultimately death. You may have noticed that your dog has dandruff after changing food, but the food is really good — try adding levels of zinc and vitamin A. Your main task as a pet owner is to monitor the health of a small family member and be responsible for this life. Image credit: canva. The first one is a protein that can be found in meat, poultry, fish, yogurt, and cooked eggs. Protein is responsible for the structure of muscles and tissues, as well as the formation and growth of new cells. In the diet for a Labrador puppy, it is imperative to include carbohydrates that are found in brown rice, potatoes, and wheat. Carbohydrates supply the body with glucose, which is responsible for the functioning of the brain and nervous system. An obligatory component of dog food is fats. It is a source of energy, development, and functioning of the cells and muscles of the body. Fats are included in oil and even fish oil. Puppy food for Labs or any other dog includes a certain amount of minerals such as calcium, potassium, sodium, iron, zinc, magnesium, and others. Minerals in dog food form bones and cartilage and balance the nerves. It promotes the production of hormones in the Lab puppies, regulates the balance of fluids in the body, and transports oxygen into the blood. Like people, dog and puppy foods should include plenty of water. Water is life! Once in the body, they strengthen bones, and teeth and fill the Labrador puppy with energy. Cost point Every time you buy pet food, you think about the issue of price. Of course, cost is important when making a purchasing decision. You should be aware that higher-quality puppy food can cost more than the average price. Your dog is an irreplaceable member of your family, which must be protected and loved with all your heart. Risks and diseases Lab owners should know well about all risks and diseases that their dogs may face. Numerous studies confirm that the Labrador Retriever breed is prone to digestive sensitivities and skin allergies due to irritating foods. This leads to pruritic diseases. Skin allergies and problems with the gastrointestinal tract are severe. Labs are prone to obesity. Maintaining a healthy weight and body is considered an important point of caring for a dog. In general, Labrador Retrievers should have a taut, hourglass-shaped figure. Obesity puts additional stress on bones and joints and makes it difficult to stay healthy. To combat weight gain, you need to exercise your dog with certain physical exercises, follow a proper diet, control portion sizes, and receive treats. Another disease caused by malnutrition is Gastric dilatation-volvulus. In short, this is boating. Indigestion is a severe problem that should not be ignored. The worst risk is death from the musculoskeletal disorder of muscles, nerves, joints, arthritis, and spinal discs. Also, you should be aware that feed processing of dog foods affects the occurrence and development of cancer. Dry food is cooked at a very high temperature, which leads to the formation of harmful chemical elements in the body of the dog. Such food also contains carbohydrates, which break down into cancer-causing glucose. You can combine dog food with homemade recipe food for your pet yourself. Moreover, it is a good way of feeding your dog if the dog food at home is over or there is very little left, but you need to extend the time until the next purchase. Dogs fed solely on home-cooked or combined diets lived for about 13 years, while those fed only processed food lived for about 10 years. Like human food, it can be chewed easily. Food is broken down in the body so that key nutrients are absorbed more quickly. Such food facilitates digestion and relaxes the stomach. Reducing stress on the digestive system reduces the likelihood of bloating. If you still decide to cook homemade food, follow the rules. Study each ingredient. Cook all animal products for the exact finish to kill harmful bacteria. Risks of homemade dog food Most of the problems are caused by a misunderstanding of the nutritional needs of the Labrador. If you do not understand the effect of food on the body of your pet, which reaction is correct and which can lead to negative consequences and different stages of life, contact a professional veterinarian who can tell you in detail about the effect of food on the body of a dog and how to properly form a pet diet. Puppies, with their small stomachs need three or four small meals a day, while adult dogs generally have two meals a day. Sometimes, elderly dogs benefit from three or four smaller meals. If you feed treats for training or when out on walks, this should also be taken into account. Remember that treats should be just that — something special, fed occasionally, in small amounts. Feeding frenzy? While some dogs like to savour every mouthful of their food, you might find that when feeding your Labrador puppy or adult dog, that they scoff down their dinner in seconds, which is really not good for them. Eating food too fast can cause digestive upsets, some of which can be very serious, requiring immediate veterinary attention. By switching the food you are feeding them to something more nutritionally beneficial you may be able to change your Lab's eating behaviour and allow them to slow down. What foods are dangerous to Labrador Retrievers? Here are some of the main foods that are dangerous for dogs and should be avoided in a Labrador diet. If you suspect your Lab has eaten any of the following, consult your vet immediately. Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death. Chocolate, coffee, tea Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system. Fat trimmings Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract. Grapes and raisins Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. Gravy If made from meat juices, it can contain high levels of fat, which can cause pancreatitis. Large amounts of liver Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones. Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle. Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhoea. Mouldy or spoiled food Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhoea and can also affect other organs. Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death. Onions and garlic raw, cooked, or powder Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anaemia. Garlic is less toxic than onions. Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock. Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin a B vitamin. This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain salmonella. Raw fish Can result in a thiamine a B vitamin deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly. Excessive salt If eaten in large quantities, it may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus. Table scraps in large amounts Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced and if excessively fed can lead to obesity. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed. Xylitol This artificial sweetener sneaks its way into all sorts of foods — from peanut butter to jellies and jams and is highly toxic to canines. After a dog consumes a significant amount of xylitol, there is a massive release of insulin from the pancreas. This, in turn, results in a dangerously low blood sugar level and symptoms such as weakness, trembling, seizures, collapse, and even death. Is a Labrador Retriever the right breed for you? Best Puppy Food for Labs The best Labrador puppy food provides a diet that is nutritious, healthy, and tasty. So, what is the best puppy food for your Lab? Puppy kibble or dried food is the most popular option. Kibble is complete and can give a perfectly balanced diet. Puppy kibble and tinned dog meat combined is another common choice among puppy parents. Feeding your Labrador puppy on home cooked food or on a totally raw diet is also possible. Raw puppy food is growing in popularity, and there are pros and cons to raw feeding your puppy. People often feel very strongly that one way of feeding is better than another, and you can always find evidence to support your view. Dog breeders, veterinarians and even nutritionists have their own strong views. The dire consequences they list for not listening to them can have puppy owners very worried. The truth is that there is no good quality evidence showing that kibble is better for the long term health of your dog, or that raw feeding is better. There are risks and benefits to both, and the main thing is to ensure that your dog has good quality food to eat. Puppy kibble suits some better, and raw puppy food is better for others. Puppy Kibble for your Labrador Puppy food made into pellets is called kibble. An airtight plastic container or tin will do the job, although you should make sure it is food grade quality. Puppy kibble is the best way of feeding your Labrador according to most breeders and your veterinarian is most likely to support this method of feeding. Good puppy kibble will contain every nutrient your Labrador puppy needs in order to grow and remain healthy. The kibble pieces will be tasty, good for keeping teeth healthy, and free from additives that can provoke allergies or stomach problems. Labrador puppy kibble only needs to be fed next to water. Puppy kibble from a reputable manufacturer is intended to be a complete and balanced food. But some owners like to mix in canned dog food or even scraps of raw food with kibble. Your puppy is likely to get an upset stomach or to not have the right balance of nutrition when fed this way. Whether you decide to feed only with kibble or you want to mix it up, pick a good dried food manufacturer and stick with them. Feeding your Labrador puppy raw food has its benefits and drawbacks. One of the downsides is that there is a lot to learn. Here is a link to the articles you need to help you decide whether or not raw feeding is for you: Although I like the raw diet for my dogs, most puppies fed kibble go on to have long and healthy lives. Whatever puppy food you choose, the most important thing is portion control. How Much to Feed your Labrador Puppy? People often tell me how much their puppy weighs, and ask how much puppy food they should give him. Your Labrador is particularly at risk if they grow too quickly. The following diet chart is for kibble fed puppies and does not apply to raw fed pups. It gives you an idea of how much to feed your Labrador puppy Lab Puppy Feeding Chart The Lab puppy feeding chart below is only a very rough guide. The quantity of food you need for your puppy will vary depending on your puppy and on the brand of food you are feeding him. Labrador puppy food must be aimed at medium to large breed dogs. Check the pack carefully and look at the dietary charts. Ideally, you want the optimal protein content and the lowest amount of additives. Part of this always comes down to the cost. The healthiest puppy food is usually the most expensive and may not be affordable for some families. The Cost Of Puppy Food Some puppy food brands are more concentrated than and contain a higher proportion of proteins, essential oils, and other nutrients. The absence of these fillers means that you can often feed lower quantities of more costly food, making them less expensive than they first seem. You might also find that cheaper brands make your puppy poop more due to those extra fillers going straight through him. While some brands are beyond the budget of many families, it is usually good to buy a premium brand. High Quality Brands of Puppy Food Some brands of puppy food have developed a reputation for producing a high quality product and have many devoted supporters, including breeders that have fed them to generations of puppies.
Spots, coats, eye colors, and skin types all make dogs as unique as human beings. Considering the rarity, albinism in dogs is an especially curious case. Here are a few interesting facts you should know about albino dogs. Stephanie Pumphrey, assistant professor of veterinary ophthalmology at Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, notes that the true telltale sign of an albino dog would be lack of pigment around their eyes. For a dog to be considered albino, he or she must lack the genes necessary to produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin and hair coloring. There are other coat patterns that can be confused for alibinism, however, such as merle and piebald patterns. These coat patterns result in something similar to albino, and most often occur in Australian Shepherds, Great Danes, Dachshunds, and Collies, to name a few. Albinism occurs more often when dogs have two copies of a recessive gene, she says, which will cause the characteristics of albinism. Margaret Casal, associate professor of medical genetics at the School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, advises that albino dogs come with higher risk of numerous health issues. Pinterest Email Albinism is rare in all animals, including dogs, and many people easily confuse white-coated dogs, or dogs that exhibit forms of albinism, for albino dogs. True albinism is a genetic condition in which pigmentation of eyes, coat, and skin is completely absent. An important distinction to draw between dogs with white coats and albino dogs is that white-coated dogs produce the color white, while albinos only appear white due to lack of pigmentation. Albino dogs, or dogs with a form of albinism, are unable to produce sufficient melanin. White is a color; albinism is the absence of color. All-white dogs have genetic markers by virtue of which the white pigment masks, or suppresses, all other colors. Albinism, on the other hand, is caused by the absence of both melanin and the enzymes that produce it. That said, some dogs exhibit characteristics of albinism without being true albinos. How can you tell if you have an albino dog? Without genetic testing, albino dogs can only be determined most easily by a close inspection of his nose and eyes. Like albino cats , the eyes and the tissue surrounding the eye sockets of albino dogs appear to exhibit a pinkish hue. The pink in both eyes and skin is not true pink, though. What seems to be pink is actually the result of diffused blood flow in these areas. Photo by eunjishere on Instagram. Dog and cat eyes are able to process a great deal more available light than human eyes. This is not only why they have far superior night vision , but also why their eyes appear red in flash photography. This is Gohan, an albino dog. Note the absence of color on the nose and around the eye sockets. Photo by gohan the dog on Tumblr. Partial albinism in dogs Some dogs may appear to be true albinos, but retain some pigmentation, which will be most noticeable on the nose or stomach. We can call this partial albinism, but there is actually a range of melanins, and as such, a wide variety of albinisms are possible and observable in dogs. Eyes and skin of albino dogs may appear pink, but it is the diffused color of blood vessels. Posted by a life of pitbulls on Tumblr. That said, in cases of partial albinism, dogs produce only a small amount of melanin, sufficient to produce limited coloration. With the exception of small areas of pigmentation, whether in eyes, skin, or coat, what remains will retain that extremely pale, color-drained appearance. Merle-coated dogs exhibit splotches or patches of color, not only on the coat, but on the skin as well. This beautiful dog is Keller, a double merle Australian Shepherd. Her owner writes very movingly about the difficulties and health issues of double merle dogs, not to be confused with albinos. Photo by allaussies on Tumblr. Dogs with merle coats are also prone to having heterochromatic, or different-colored, eyes. As in white cats, the genes responsible for coat color, eye, and ear health are not causally linked, so white and albino dogs are not necessarily more likely to be born blind or deaf. Double merle dogs, like Keller in the photo above, may be mistaken for albino dogs. Unlike true albino dogs, who, aside from light sensitivity, are generally healthy, double-merle-coated dogs are at higher risk for both deafness and blindness. Light sensitivity in albino dogs Melanin serves a number of uses in the body aside from providing pigmentation. In the eyes, the presence of melanin is one thing that allows dogs to process and filter light. For a true albino dog, without melanin or without much, direct sunlight causes pain in their eyes which makes them squint. True albino dogs should get minimal and carefully managed exposure to direct sunlight. Albino dogs, or dogs with partial albinism, are highly sensitive to direct sunlight. Photo by gordy stop being weird on Tumblr. Light filtration is not the only purpose for melanin. Further, albino dogs are far more prone to sunburn and to developing skin cancers due to their extreme photosensitivity. Share your experiences with albino dogs Though it is rare, albinism is not restricted to any particular breed of dog. Have you ever owned or encountered any albino dogs? What breed or mix was the dog? If you have lived with and cared for an albino dog, what differences and adjustments did you make, in terms of regular exercise routines or living conditions, to make sure his needs were met? Learn more about dogs with Dogster:. By Shannon Cutts 1 Comment The white standard Poodle is a particularly striking and memorable coat color. They stand around 15 inches tall and weigh about 70lbs. And although white dogs are in general more likely to be deaf than other colors and occasionally have dermatological issues, their other predispositions to disease are the same. Sometimes the white Poodle is called the white French Poodle, out of a mistaken idea that the Poodle hails from France. This dog was actually first bred in Germany! But the French people love Poodles and have chosen the Poodle as their national dog — hence the nickname. The Poodle is a remarkable sight in any coat color. But there is just something about a white Poodle, especially a white standard Poodle done up in a full show clip complete with pompons! A white Poodle is not an albino Poodle. Albino dogs are actually quite rare, but many dogs have white coats. You can easily tell the difference by looking at eye color. Poodles nearly always have dark-colored eyes, and some light-coated Poodles will have amber eyes. Other standard coat colors include silver, silver beige, red, gray, cream, black, brown, blue, and apricot. Non-standard coat colors include bi-coated Poodles. An example of a bi-coated Poodle might be white and silver or red and white. About White Poodles and Deafness Canine researchers have confirmed a link between white coat color and canine deafness. The Poodle But it does mean that deafness is more likely to occur in white-coated dogs than in other dogs. The Poodle with or without a white coat is one of an estimated 85 dog breeds prone to inherited deafness. The current theories regarding heritable deafness linked to the white coat color include a possible recessive gene and a lack of pigmentation along the inner ear canal. Many deaf dogs and their owners live long and happy lives together with a little help from deaf dog training. White Poodle Dog Shedding and Grooming The white Poodle has the same enviable quality as Poodle dogs of different coat colors: a nearly non-shedding coat. This has given Poodles a reputation as hypoallergenic dogs, although technically they still have the same allergy-triggering protein in their skin, urine, and saliva as do all other dogs. Where the hypoallergenic label comes into play relates to the amount of contact that you, as a Poodle owner, can expect to have with this protein, which can be shed out along with falling fur. This keeps your clean-up chores to a minimum and also minimizes your contact with fur-born protein allergens. If you or someone in your family is sensitive to pet dander, a Poodle could be a good choice for a family pet. Even so, a daily brush will go a long way to keep tangles from forming while removing any trapped debris as well. The white miniature Poodle can weigh up to 15 pounds and stand up to 15 inches tall. The white toy Poodle will weigh four to six pounds and stand no taller than 10 inches. A white teacup Poodle is the smallest Poodle, typically weighing between two and four pounds and standing no taller than eight inches. They are also known as micro Poodles! White Poodle Dog Temperament and Personality To date, there is no confirmed link between the white coat color in Poodles and any differences in temperament or personality. Rather, a white Poodle from a reputable, health-focused breeder will display the same loving, intelligent, and active personality that Poodles as a breed are known for. The white standard Poodle is a top pick for families with young children. The standard Poodle makes a great family watchdog and will be gentle and loving towards their family — children and adults alike. However, a small white Poodle miniature, toy, or teacup size is not generally regarded as a suitable pet dog for families with small children. Smaller Poodles can have a more anxious or high-strung temperament. They tend to poorly tolerate rough play and can also be easily injured if they get underfoot. Training and Socialization The standard Poodle and smaller Poodles miniature, toy, teacup face different challenges during the training and socialization process. This stems from their slightly different natures — the standard Poodle is typically calm and centered unless guarding duties indicate otherwise. A white mini Poodle, white toy Poodle, or white teacup Poodle, on the other hand, may display more anxiety in the presence of strange people, animals, or situations. A white Poodle of any size will benefit greatly from early and ongoing training and socialization, including exposure to unfamiliar people, animals, and situations. This will help your white Poodle learn to be a happy, healthy, productive member of your family and local community. Exercise A white standard Poodle or white small Poodle is an active dog breed. The Poodle breed first gained its start in Germany as a breed meant to assist human hunters with retrieving ducks. These dogs are great swimmers! They are also all-around excellent athletes and excel at pretty much any type of canine sports, including dock diving, agility, obedience, tracking, and other sports. Poodles also love to play, with games of fetch being a particular breed favorite. A white Poodle of any size will thrive with lots of daily activity. For smaller Poodles, be sure to modify activities to account for their shorter legs and smaller size. White Standard Poodle Health Issues Not all known breed-specific health issues can be detected before you make a lifelong commitment to a white Poodle or a Poodle with any coat color. A white standard Poodle, like other large dog breeds that have deep chests, is at risk to develop bloat gastric torsion. Bloat occurs when the stomach twists, and it can quickly become fatal. Smaller white Poodle dogs are not typically at risk for bloat. Standard Poodles should be tested for hip dysplasia and eye issues. Cardiac and thyroid function tests are also highly recommended. Standard Poodle Puppoes Be prepared to make a substantial investment if you choose a white Poodle of any size. Choosing a White Poodle Puppy The best approach when selecting your new white baby Poodle is to look for a healthy, energetic, curious, and friendly Poodle puppy. Whether you are choosing a puppy from a litter of white standard Poodle puppies, or you have your eye on a white mini Poodle or white toy Poodle puppy, be sure the breeder you work with can show proof that all required genetic health tests and vaccinations have been done. Resources James et al. Strain, G. Lee, C. White Poodles are classified as light to non-shedders. They will drop a few strands of hair here and there throughout the year but will not undergo heavy seasonal shedding like other breeds. Are White Poodles Hypoallergenic? White Poodles, like all other Poodle coat colors and patterns, are considered to be hypoallergenic as they do not produce or release much allergy inducing dander into their immediate environment. Sometimes smaller sizes of Poodle such as Toy Poodles are considered to be more hypoallergenic than other Poodle sizes as smaller dogs produce less dander than larger dogs. You can make your dog even more hypoallergenic by keeping up a good grooming routine as it will stop them from releasing allergens into your home. A brush down with a slicker brush every other day is ideal to remove any loose hairs. As for washing, a bath with a gentle dog shampoo every 3 months will remove dead skin cells, dirt and debris. They get to a height of up to 10 inches .Are White Toy Poodles Rare? White Toy Poodles are not that rare despite the coat color being a recessive trait. There are many other coat colors that are quite rare for Toy Poodles like apricot, red and sable. They are 10 to 15 inches .They are 18 to 24 inches .Toy Poodles are fully grown between 6 and 7 months of age. Mini Poodles are fully grown between 7 and 12 months of age. My advice don't risk your money. Update: despite your response to this post this has not been resolved, still no papers. Update: currently February and still no papers, whilst covid is being used a smoke screen for massive lapse in time. We understand it is extremely frustrating to wait many months to receive a pedigree from the kennel club, and to get little in the way of updates from them on when to expect it. However we do in all conscience believe it is unfair that Euro Puppy is rated with 1 star, due to the incompetence of another, separate organisation. This situation is especially regrettable for us, as we have done everything we can to ensure all went smoothly. The necessary documents were prepared by us and the breeder, and sent to the kennel club promptly. The extremely long delay since then, and errors in the wording on the pedigree when first processed, are entirely due to defects at the kennel club. Several members of the Euro Puppy team continue to do everything they can to push the kennel club. Including visiting the club in person, and following up weekly by phone and email. And we will do so until the kennel club fulfil their obligations. We do truly hope that you will reconsider your review of Euro Puppy once the kennel club finally complete your pedigree and you receive it from us. Dear Kasra I completely agree with your frustration about how long it has taken for your dogs' export pedigree to be completed by the kennel club. As you know from the communication you have had with us, the timescale for the processing of the pedigree is unfortunately completely out of Euro Puppy's control. We also informed you that we passed the paperwork needed to prepare the pedigree to the kennel club some months ago. But due to the many understandable difficulties they are facing due to the COVID virus, there was this considerable delay. If it were up to us you would have received the pedigree as soon as you received your dog. Sadly we have no choice but to wait for the kennel club. The mother was imported from Finland and the father was imported from Poland, both from top show kennels within their respective countries. Both parents are stunning examples of the breed and can be seen. They conform with the breed standard, and both come from a long line of standard champions and health tested dogs. A lot of research and effort went into importing the parents of these exceptional puppies and we are so lucky to now have them as part of our family. They have the best temperaments one could wish for, very friendly with that breed typical clownesque nature. Puppies have been cherished since birth, so much care and attention has gone into their upbringing, by way of nutrition, handling and socialisation, no expense was spared to ensure the best start for them. Currently there is one male and one female available and are already displaying excellent character with big ambitions to lead a mischievous life. They are IKC registered with pedigree, vet checked, wormed, microchipped and have received their first vaccinations. If you are looking for a new addition to your family, I would be happy to have a chat with you about the possibility of reserving a pup. No private numbers will be answered and please no time wasters. Thanks for looking. It appeared in Paris in the mid-nineteenth century, apparently the result of cross-breeding of Toy Bulldogs imported from England and local Parisian ratters. History[ edit ] From the beginning of the nineteenth century bulldogs were bred in the United Kingdom for purposes other than traditional blood sports such as bull-baiting, which were banned in .By , there were few Toy Bulldogs left in England, such was their popularity in France, and due to the exploits of specialist dog exporters. The dogs were highly fashionable and were sought after by society ladies and Parisian prostitutes alike, as well as creatives such as artists, writers, and fashion designers. As it changed, terrier stock had been brought in to develop traits such as the breed's long straight ears. One of its ancestors was the English bulldog. Americans had been importing French Bulldogs for a while, but it was not until when they were brought over in order to set up an American-based breeding program. They were mostly owned by society ladies, who first displayed them at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in .The judge in question at the dog show, George Raper, only chose winners with "rose ears"—ears that folded at the tip, as with the standard for Bulldogs. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed quickly after the breed club was formed, and by the French Bulldog was the fifth most popular dog breed in America. The Kennel Club initially recognized them as a subset of the existing Bulldog breed rather than an entirely new breed. Cousens, a meeting was held to set up a breed club in order to seek individual recognition for the French breed. According to the American Kennel Club, the French Bulldog has overtaken the Labrador as the most popular breed of dog. Before , Labradors had held the top spot for 31 years. Download our guide! She is a very beautiful GSD, healthy, and very willing to learn new things. I have actually train Kimber to be a diabetic alert service dog for myself, which she picked up very well and is happy to work. Peggy was more than willing to help evaluate which puppy of the litter would have the best attitude for my life being around several young children. We interviewed other breeders but you could immediately tell that Peggy truly cared about her dogs and took care to ensure we would get a puppy that was a good fit for us. She answered all of our questions and continued to do so long after the actual adoption. Our dog has been a wonderful addition to our family and our next German Shepherd will be from Von Buchmann! High quality German Shepherds and a breeder who cares, you really can ask for more. Denise B. We purchased our first puppy from Von Buchmann German Shepherds in .Since then, we have been back to get two more puppies. Peggy is a very knowledgeable breeder and her dogs are beautiful and well trained with great temperaments. We are very pleased with Von Buchmann German Shepherds. April R. Besides his physical beauty, he has a protective yet loving temperament, listens and responds to all commands, was well socialized and mannered, and only barks when alerting me to perceived danger. You will not be disappointed. Susan H. We bought our first German Shepherd from this breeder and have been over the moon impressed with how this pup fits perfectly in to our family. Peggy did a great job of recommending the perfect puppy based on drive and temperament for our family with three young boys. Our pup is currently 11mo old and such a joy. Ever the professional, Peggy answered all of my possibly annoying first time dog owner questions with care and grace. She has been a resource for us months after our purchase and I would not hesitate to contact her with questions in the future. I highly recommend this breeder without reservation. Kelli S. Their temperament, physique, coats and general health are outstanding. Jodi H. I give Von Buchmann German Shepherds a 5 star! I have a beautiful 18 month girl from Phoenix. Peggy Buchmann matched the perfect pup with what our family wanted in a Shepherd. Our pup was used to a household environment, family life, and well socialized for her age when we got her. The follow up with Peggy has been amazing. She is quick to answer questions and offer support and suggestions. Peggy takes her breeding seriously and strives for great temperment, good health, and beauty with her pups. Tammy S. Very knowledgeable, caring and responsible breeder that is always responsive to concerns or questions! Our second male from her is now 7mos and is incredible! Mark M. We have had our beautiful Luca with us for nearly 10 years. We will not hesitate to look to Von Buchmann for our next family member. Thank you for such excellence. Kristen R. Kolenda Kennels is a German Shepherd Breeder that is a personalized kennel and dedicated to improving the breed, located at th Ave Dorr, Michigan , located in Grand Rapids Michigan area. When buying a puppy it is a good ideal to visit the kennel. You should be able to interact with their dogs, especially the mom and dad of the puppy you are considering. This is the only way to check the temperament of their breeding dogs. By visiting the kennel you can inspect the cleanliness of the facility, and how the puppies are being taken care of. You can interact with the puppies and also, check the temperament of the puppies themselves and over all health. By visiting the kennel you will also be able to see the over all looks and structure of the breeding dogs. By doing these things this would help improve the German Shepherd Breed itself. We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. A cross between the Labrador Retriever and the Poodle, the Labradoodle is an intelligent and friendly breed. They love nothing more than to be around their family. The Labradoodle combines the energy of the Labrador Retriever with the strong work ethic and intelligence of the Poodle. They do have a desire to please so training is not overly difficult but early training is necessary. The Labradoodle gets along well with everyone, from other dogs and pets to children — though their size may be a bit problematic for smaller children. They enjoy hanging out with you on the couch but can easily transition to playful and energetic. Though they will bark when a stranger is near, they will not make a good guard dog due to their friendly nature. Overall, the Labradoodle is a great pet for first-time owners thanks to their friendly nature and easy trainability. We are so grateful that we are able to help you rescue the dog of your dreams. Labradoodle Rescues in Indiana. Learn more Since , All 4 Animals Rescue has been aiming to help minimize the number of animals in rescue shelters in Indiana. This non-profit organization continues its goal with dozens of volunteers and foster homes that provide care and support for the rescue animals. Their committed volunteers try to process all adoption applications within 24 to 48 hours and pair you with the right pet for your needs. As a popular Labradoodle rescue in Indiana, All 4 Animals Rescue is a great place to view adoptable dogs and find your new best friend. Considerations for Choosing a Labradoodle Rescue In Indiana Unfortunately, designer dog breeds like Labradoodles are not immune to rescue shelters. Some terrific Labradoodles enter an Indiana shelter due to owner-surrender. Advantages of a Rescue Adoption There are numerous benefits to selecting a Labradoodle from a local Indiana animal rescue agency. A rescue organization may be your best option if you are looking for a new furry best friend. Some advantages of adopting a rescue dog are: Give a dog a second chance at a happy life Helping control the pet population Rescuing a dog that may be euthanized due to overcrowding Less expensive than breeders Help minimize the demand for puppy mills Some dogs are past the exhausting puppy stage Many dogs will have basic house training already Some dogs in high-kill shelters suffer euthanization because there is no more space available, they are older, or because of Black Dog Syndrome if their coat is dark. The Price of a Labradoodle Rescue Pet Although the dogs you find in local Indiana rescues are not free, the cost to adopt a pet will be significantly less than if you were to get them from a breeder. All animals in rescue shelters will have alteration surgery to help control the pet population, have up-to-date vaccinations with a complete veterinarian check, and be a fraction of the cost. Typically, you will pay a few hundred dollars for a Labradoodle in an Indiana rescue shelter and will have the support of the rescue to help integrate your new pet into your home. The Adoption Process at a Labradoodle Rescue in Indiana The adoption process at your local shelter is typically not quick. However, these agencies work hard to rehabilitate their animals and complete pre-screening to match the right dog with a suitable owner. Although each rescue organization will have its processes, potential adoptive families generally need to fill out an application beforehand. They will require information about all individuals in the household, along with existing pets, housing conditions, and lifestyle details. This way, they can pair a dog that will match an owner to help ensure it is going to its forever home. Some agencies will do a home visit or ask all people and pets to come to meet the dog beforehand to ensure compatibility. The adoption process can take one to four weeks or more, depending on the necessary steps to choose the right animal for an adoptive home. Although this timeframe may seem too long for some dog lovers, it is well worth the wait to ensure that you have the most suitable pet for your home. Anytime an animal has a change in environment, it can become stressed. For example, some dogs temporarily will not eat or forget their house training. Other Labradoodles may act shy, scared, or nervous until they become accustomed to their new surroundings. Some tips to help your new pet in your home include: Avoid loud noises or sudden movements around them Do not be demanding or aggressive with their training Stick to a routine for predictability Avoid introducing friends and extended family members all at once Be patient as they settle in Set them up for success by eliminating tempting triggers like food on counters It may take a few weeks for your new animal to warm up to you and adapt to your surroundings, but it will be worth it once it happens. New pet owners will soon realize that once their Labradoodle relaxes in their new home, they will have a loyal friend for the rest of their days. Conclusion Finding a reputable non-profit Labradoodle rescue in Indiana is not difficult. Potential dog owners can start by talking to one of these top five organizations in your local area. They can save you time and money when compared to the alternative of obtaining a dog from a breeder. Do you know of another Labradoodle rescue in Indiana that we missed? Have you adopted an animal from one of these organizations before? Leave a Comment. He looks clean, he smells better than he once did. He eats better now than he ever did. This is Sawyer. My dream dog. My once hopeful stud boy. When I took him home he was infested with worms, reeked like a New York City trash can and had hip dysplasia. It took months to rehabilitate and glue his broke shell back together. I remember standing at the door for 3 hours while he stood in my back yard not allowing me to get near him; he stood in the cold November rain and shivered. He wanted to come in so badly but was too afraid. I stood inside the kitchen soaking wet crying and begging him to come in. I finally had to get a bed sheet and with my husbands help cornered him and tossed the sheet over him. He was purchased from a well known breeder who offered a warranty and a guarantee on his health. We promptly started health testing him when he got home. Sadly he failed his OFA and was diagnosed with hip dysplasia. His breeder refuses even after receiving proof to honor her warranty. She herself admitted that she has never tested her dogs but yet sells them at a premium rate. Look for proof of testing. She never cried a day in her life for this dog. This is Sawyer, I cry when asked about him, he will always have a special place in my heart. I saw old rusted crates stacked along the drive, driving past a dog run out by some trees I saw a dog house and 4 small dogs, I parked next to a car port type structure that housed several cages stacked on top of one another in rows, inside the cages were chickens, rabbits, cats, ferrets and other small animals. There were several small shack like out buildings. I walked up to the door and knocked, no one answered but I had called 5 minutes prior so they knew I was there. I opened the door leaning inside to say Hello; looking around there were empty cages everywhere and bags of Purina stacked 10 or more bags high, empty bags and other trash scattered on the floor. Back out on the porch I called the breeder to alert them that I was there, looking up I was faced with 2 dobermans not looking very happy, I later learned that they were nice. I entered a room with a desk, sofa, 2 recliners, a TV, door covered with bed sheets and walls lined with dog crates stacked from floor to ceiling, wall to wall, filled with filthy dogs. I had arrived with enough cash to buy 4 dogs. In the cage above them I found Sawyer, then referred to as Prado. He was scared and my heart broke seeing him. I passed it up. I drove home with a pit in my stomach but vowed to take care of and do the right thing by those dogs. He has a dog brother who keeps him in line, he has been trained and know several tricks; can wave, high five, pray, dance, roll over… and many more. I get letters from Sawyer every few months and everyone of his letters makes me cry. He is doing great and is a good boy. I love you Sawyer. Another sad story starts with an Oregon breeder sending me a dog in whelp, the dog was due 2 weeks after she arrived. I took the fluffy white dog out of her crate at the airport holding her in the air to shine my smile upon her face and once again found myself looking into sad scared eyes. I took her to the vet to confirm her pregnancy and the vet told me what I already knew. I had her groomed to get her pee stained and matted coat into presentable shape; I was called by the groomer to tell me she had bit her. Took her home to have her a few days later bite my 11 year old daughter and to later have her bite a guest in my home and my vet the day I returned her to her breeder. Being told stories from clients about an Indiana breeder who is breeding a dog that was either hit by a car or stepped on, the story was told to me by multiple clients who claimed to visit the breeder and was told the dog had a funny limp and was skittish because of her accident, unfortunately the cause of the accident change based on who was visiting. Calls from other concerned customers who visited an Iowa breeder; was advised in order to visit she first had to pay for a puppy. Arriving to play with the puppies they found the adult dogs matted and dirty, so dirty even that to touch them or have the dogs brush up against them would soil their clothes and leave an awful stench. Hearing barking in a side room where they were able to gain a quick peek revealed dogs in crates stacked from floor to ceiling. Calls from a different client reported a visit to a neighboring Iowa breeder with a similar story. I will continue to report on stories from clients and my experiences with puppy mill breeders. Here are other dogs who were found in puppy mills across the United States. Please support ethical breeding and do not buy pets from pet stores or puppy mills. The Labradoodle is a companion dog and should not be raised in a kennel, they need human companionship and thrive on being loved. If after looking at these pictures your heart needs to rescue a doodle contact the International Doodle Owners Group a 3 c rescue www. If you are unclear of what a puppymill is take a look at the pictures below. They are sickening and; REAL. This type of life for millions of poor unfortunate dogs is a reality everyday. For many dogs they are confined in conditions like this for their entire life until they are no longer able to breed to make their capturers money then they are killed. The dogs you see in these pictures are VERY lucky as they are being photographed because they were rescued. So many dogs do not hit the dog lottery and make it out alive. How can you help? Well, Kent and I were talking last night in how it was one of the better decisions we have made. First, he and Willie are the best of buddies. Every morning Sawyer wakes up and climbs in between Kent and I giving us kisses. He loves to climb next to you and cuddle up, such a snuggler. In my opinion he is just a complete embodiment of love. He always wags his tail and just loves his life. Sawyer is just as good for Willie as Willie is for Sawyer. This past time when WIllie saw my travel bag he followed me around every where. Then he started to pout. I always make up what they are saying, by the way. But sometimes I think he is so happy because of the trials he went through. He tries to wake Willie up and the rest of us. Needless to say, we love our dogs. They are some of the most popular in the neighborhood! They are both unique in their same ways, and they both show their love in different ways. But they really love each other.

Lifespan Sociability The Silver German Shepherd is a real spectacle—and among the rarest of all shepherd colors. Because of its rarity, you may have trouble finding a breeder near you. If you purchase a Silver Sable Shepherd this way, you can expect them to come with all applicable health care, including spay or neutering, vaccinations, and microchipping. Silver coloration in Shepherds is caused by genetic dilution. The silver color of this particular German Shepherd is the result of a recessive gene in the bloodline. Just because there might be a silver puppy in a litter does not mean that they all will share the trait. Silver Sable Shepherds are incredibly rare. You might have some real trouble locating a Silver Sable German Shepherd. When you do, you want to secure the puppy as quickly as possible—as there is high demand for them. Even if the brothers and sisters of the litter do not share the color, this can make the particular puppy cost more than the others. The ultimate cost is up to the breeder to ensure the quality of the animal. Silver Sable Shepherds are stubborn. Because the Silver Sable German Shepherd is so remarkably intelligent, they tend to have a stubborn streak. For inexperienced owners, their energy levels and intelligence can be intimidating, making training difficult. Silver Sable Shepherds are incredibly family-oriented. Like any other German Shepherd, the silver sables are intensely loyal to the members of its family. Silver Sable Shepherds are perfect for a wide variety of work-related tasks. If you have your heart set on this rare coloration of an excellent dog breed, we wish you the best of luck in your search. Featured Image Credit: J. Romanova, Shutterstock Contents. In , its name was changed back to German Shepherd. This correlates with anti-German sentiments that lasted throughout the war. The ancestral origin of the silver German Shepherd is as the name suggests Germany, where General Max von Stephanitz spent 35 years of his life researching and breeding dogs. In this process, he intended to develop the ideal herding dog and cross-bred different species because trying to get a better dog by breeding the same bloodline would be ineffective. The different types of German Shepherds available today come from him. The breed ranked as the third most registered breed in by the American Kennel Club, and they remain popular all around the globe. Although silver German Shepherds are a subset of the mainstream GSDs, they have precisely the same build and physique. Their breeding history is also no different than other German Shepherd Dogs. They are a relatively modern breed, with their origin dating back to .Silver GSDs have a wolf-like appearance and were originally working dogs developed for herding sheep. But because of their friendly nature, intelligence, strength, obedience, and trainability, they are now bred worldwide for other types of work such as search and rescue, police, military roles, disability assistance, and even in acting roles. Its appearance makes it stand out from other GSD dogs. Silver GSD Rarity, Cost, Look World of Dogz German Shepherds officially come in a wide range of colors , including black , black and cream, black and red, black and silver, black and tan, bicolor, blue , grey, liver, sable , and white. Blue, grey, white, liver, and silver German Shepherds within this range are considered unique and are pretty rare as well. Washed-out colors are considered undesirable because they are seen as faults, and white is disqualified from the show ring. Sorry to disappoint some — but silver German Shepherds are not always gray and glimmering. So, what does a silver GSD look like? Silver German Shepherds have an off-tan coloration. Silver color can range from a cream to an off-white color but comes in a metallic sheen in most cases. Since silver is a modification of reds and tans or pheomelanin pigmentation, they usually have black areas amongst the silver portions. Silver bi-color dogs are also predominantly black with minimum silver points and extended saddles and blankets similar to their tan counterparts. Scientists also believe their unusual coloration results from a modifier on red or tan hair. They are also known as silver sable German Shepherds. Like all Alsatians, they have a distinctive head, domed forehead, and triangular pointy ears that stand open at the front but are often pulled during movement. Silver German Shepherds are large dogs with a moderately long body length to height ratio. Males weigh lbs and are about inches tall. Females weigh lbs and will be inches tall. There is no standard weight range set by the American Kennel Club official breed standard. Watch This Gorgeous Silver German Shepherd Having Fun… Silver German Shepherd These dogs usually have a long muzzle, a short-medium to medium dense double coat, a soft and long plush tail reaching the hock, and a long neck that raises when excited and lowered when moving at a fast pace. Silver GSDs possess numerous physical qualities matching standard German Shepherds and are thus not different in build. Their silver color is simply a variation that plays no part in determining their temperament. No German Shepherd variation possesses the G series Greying gene. So, where does the silver color come from then, genetically? In German Shepherd coat color genetics , although clear scientific and genetic evidence explaining the silver coat color is not available, scientists have found out that they come from the A-series or the Agouti series. This same series also produces the sable German Shepherd and contains at least one Agouti allele not paired with a dominant sable allele. The agouti becomes quite distinctive when combined with red hair dilution, which results in the red hairs becoming cream or greyish. Studies clearly show that the silver coat color of these breeds is merely a genetic phenomenon and does not affect their temperament. However, keep in mind that they are not friendly to every stranger they meet and need adequate socialization and training. They are good with children and make excellent family dogs, but you need to set specific boundaries for them, just like any other breed. They often take on a guardian role for those within their family, owing to their history of herding sheep. Silver German Shepherds do not like staying alone for long periods and can become destructive if unexercised and boredom sets in. You can curb their behavior by giving them essential mental and physical exercise by including various activities, training, and problem-solving puzzles in their routine. This ensures that they drain their excess energy by channeling it into constructive and exciting activities. Does Silver Colour Affect Health? Coat color affects the health of some breeds, but that is not the case for silver German Shepherds. Their glorious color has no bearing on their health. They are, however, prone to certain health conditions, but that has nothing to do with their coloration. Their health correlates with that of other German Shepherd types. Hip and elbow dysplasia are some of the most common health-related complications in this breed. Instead of looking for a relationship between health and coat color, one should look at the health condition of parent dogs. Parents with high scores for hips and elbows should reduce the chances of puppies developing these conditions. By then, puppies with dysplasia risk are already bred and sold. Silver German Shepherds are a relatively healthy breed. However, like most breeds, they are prone to some conditions. These are: OCD Osteochondritis dissecans abnormal cartilage growth. Saber is a certified therapy dog as well - he loves people and loves to visit. .Saber at Three Below doing therapy and some casual shots Starting to fill out! He has had reds and tans too! Good thing she never looks at my websight or she'd kill me lol: Michelle and saber winning it all st the fair news paper article Saber doing agility walked right on the equipment first time Sabers brother at only 8 months old. .Like this male Saber consistantly produces bigger and better then himself Sabers 2 year old brother and letter from owners Good Morning Robin, I figured since Max just turned 2 I'd update you. He was born on 17 Dec , to Blaze and Ziva. Had him at the vet's on Monday and he weighed in at pounds, so his weight has been pretty steady for the past few months, but he has grown taller. Currently he likes to rest his chin on the dining room table when he watches me on the laptop. Always ready in case there is an opportunity to be pet. Loves riding in the car, and gets along great with other dogs, but still apprehensive with new people, or with someone he hasn't seen in a while. I always bring treats with me to help with the introductions. Loves going with me to different businesses where allowed and has never been a problem. Great on hikes, and he carries his own backpack and supplies. The picture was taken this morning while he was waiting for his breakfast. As you can see, the silver is starting to really show. We get stopped all the time when we're out and about because of his looks, and I'm always asked if it's ok for them to take his picture because they've never seen another German Shepherd like him. I've had too many offers to sell him to count. The vet's office is really surprised at his disposition because he takes the poking and proding without incident considering his size. As always there are people worried about him because of his size, but they soon learn their fears are unfounded. Overall I'd have to say he's been a great dog. Saber sons from his first litter out of a very small female! Both at 10 months old are over lbs and 30 " high at the shoulder. The rare tri color sable male is lbs the black and silver at 10 months old. When we take them for walks they strut like the world is looking at them. I wanted to get another puppy before he passed away, so that our older dog could help raise the puppy. After a while, I found your website, and looked through it, repeatedly. I was impressed by what you detailed. Large GSDs, with calm temperaments, good health, and long lives. I then researched your reputation. I am a trained investigator, being suspicious is a career hazard. I could only find one, single complaint.I wasn't really looking for a "breed standard" GSD.I was looking for more. Another white shepherd, with a straight back and good hips. I called you, and discussed what I was looking for.A large white GSD, with a good protective drive, lower prey drive, and a mellow disposition. Well, it is a year later. And we have gotten far more that what I had hoped for. Physically, he is an amazing example of a German Shepherd. He is a solid pounds, with incredible muscle tone, and a massive head. He has yet to start filling out. I expect him to be at least pounds. In all honesty, I have been a bit startled by how quickly he grew, and how large he has become. My veterinarian, who has been practicing for 35 years, has remarked that she has never seen another dog like him. She is very impressed with his bone structure, his stance, and how proportional he is. His strong, straight back; his massive head, his size, and his strength are all things that she has noted. She has suggested that I breed him, because she believes that it would be a shame not to pass his genetics on.He is, quite simply. When we take him out in public, he creates quite a stir. People routinely approach us to compliment him, and how beautiful he is. He has been described as "gorgeous", "regal", and "majestic". The fact that our eight year old can control him in public only adds to people's fascination with him. He is very obedient, and was easy to train. He is very intelligent. He is affectionate, very loving, and very playful. Despite his size, he is quite gentle with those he loves. His protective drive is very appropriate. He is wary of strangers until properly introduced. He physically places himself between my children and other people. After being taught by our older shepherd, he now regularly patrols the perimeter of our property. I have included a few pictures. Unfortunately, it is hard to get good angles of him, because he thinks my taking pictures is some sort of game. The pictures truly do not do him any justice. We will be picking up another puppy from you. Quite frankly, I think that you have managed to produce amazing examples of what GSDs should be.Large and powerful; extremely intelligent, loyal and gentle; superior health and longevity, with a very appropriate protective drive. You have surpassed all of my expectations, and our family thanks you.Andrew Sadowski. Are they healthy dogs? Strong, rich colors are generally preferred in this working bred dog. This may be why silver grey dogs are less common. Washed out colors, including blues and livers, are considered a serious fault. The white coat color is undesirable within the official description, and even leads to disqualification from the show ring. Where Do They Come From? The black and silver German Shepherd is essentially the same as any other color of German Shepherd Dog. The history of the German Shepherd Dog, of course, can be traced back to Germany. Cavalry Officer Max von Stephanitz decided he wanted to breed the ideal herding dog. Von Stephanitz spent 35 years dedicating his life to improving the breed. Expanding from its pastoral herding roots to showing its utility as a service dog and in police and military canine units worldwide. The Genetics of the Silver German Shepherd Coat color genetics are complex, with the exact genes responsible for silver coloration yet to be fully identified. Within the German Shepherd breed, the gene for sable is dominant over all other colors and patterns. The first registered German Shepherd Dog was sable in color. While you may see a working silver sable Shepherd, that would be a very unusual color combination. Different colors Bear in mind as well that the final color of a puppy will only be clear once the outer coat has fully developed. This means that a relatively dark coated puppy could develop into a mature black and silver German Shepherd Dog. They are large dogs, weighing between 50 — 90 pounds and standing between 22 — 26 inches tall. And have a muscular, strong body, with pointed ears and a dense double coat. You may have seen parent dogs advertised as black saddle silver German Shepherds, but what does that actually mean? Any German Shepherd Dog with silver coloration is less likely to have a silverback German Shepherd pattern. Grooming The double coat of the German Shepherd does require brushing every few days to remove loose hairs. They will also shed twice a year, leaving a significant amount of hair behind! Color vs Temperament There is no link between the gene for silver fur and the typical temperament traits of the dog. German Shepherds have a reputation for being fiercely intelligent, intensely loyal, and enthusiastic about work or exercise. This is a brave and courageous breed, as well as being more aloof than some others. They are good around children they know, and often take on a guardian role for those within their own family. Training and Activity All German Shepherds are intelligent dogs, regardless of their coat patterns. Their high level of intelligence means they are a joy to train, and enjoy positive, reward-based training methods. These are active dogs, and require regular daily exercise. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical exercise for German Shepherds. Be sure to challenge yours with activities such as agility, or learning tricks, as a way to keep both their mind and body stimulated. Unfortunately, all German Shepherds can be prone to a range of health conditions. Hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia are both common in the breed. Parent dogs should have been given a score for their hips and elbows. By selecting parent dogs with high scores, you can reduce the chances of your puppy developing these conditions. This is the result of abnormal cartilage growth. Other health conditions that can affect this breed include: Degenerative myelopathy. How does silver relate to black and tan? Black and tan German Shepherds come in three varieties. Tan with a black extended blanket Black and tan bicolor — Tan markings are minimal at points of eyes, at the shoulders, and minimal streaks on the toes. Some dogs have markings more like Rottweilers, with tan or silver on the front of the chest and extending up the insides of the hind legs. Genetic testing may distinguish Shepherds with extended blankets versus bicolor dogs. Blanketed dogs have the RALY gene present. Experts discovered a separate gene, one they call RALY, that is responsible for the saddle pattern in black and tan dogs like the German Shepherd and Lakeland Terrier. Creeping tan affects silver the same as it would brown or red. Some tan-pointed dogs end up with little brown or silver creeping and thus have extended blankets. Others have a very small saddle. Since many of the coat variations in German Shepherds act on the dark pigment or eumelanin, you will describe dilutions and other modifications just as you would a black and tan German Shepherd. Therefore, blue dogs can be blue and tan, solid blue, and blue bicolor. Sable dogs can also be blue, where dilution affects the black banding. The liver acts exactly the same as blue, whereby chocolate brown or lighter browns replace areas of black. Silver is a modification of reds and tans or phaeomelanin pigmentation, so dogs are black and silver. Silver bi-colors are predominantly black with minimal points of silver. Silver and black dogs can have extended saddles and blankets, just like their tan counterparts. Just as there are not fawn German Shepherds, silver does not usually present as a solid color. Solid gray dogs have a separate gene at work and are blue, not silver. A rare individual may show minimal black markings and may appear solid gray. If you look closely at these dogs, you will see the faint hint of a saddle or black banding or ticking of a sable or agouti German Shepherd. You can distinguish cream and silver versus blue or Isabella dogs by looking at their eyes. Silver dogs have no disruption of eumelanin and will have dark eyes. Blue and Isabella Shepherds, on the other hand, have light-colored eyes. Can you register and show a silver German Shepherd? You register silver dogs with the AKC as black and silver dogs. They have full access to all conformation exhibitions and other shows that the American Kennel Club offers. However, silver is a dilute color, and judges penalize it as a fault. Even without penalties, judges consistently show a preference for bright and rich colors encouraged by the breed standard. Silver is an accepted color variation of the German Shepherd Dog. Silver can infiltrate sable, but the AKC simply classifies those dogs as sable. They do not distinguish the various shades of sable or the presence of brown versus pale tans or creams. A fancier may use the term silver sable. But throughout the registries and show circuits, silver mostly refers to the black and silver dog. However, the AKC does differentiate black and silver from black and cream, which may be difficult for most people to do. In the end, black and silver are quite different from black and tan, but its distinction from black and cream is much more subjective. Black and silver dogs may more closely approach white with less of the reddish or yellowish hue that cream-colored Shepherds have. How do silver German Shepherds differ from the breed standard? Black and silver Shepherds are 22 to 26 inches tall and weigh 50 to pounds. Females should be somewhat finer in their overall impression. Silver Shepherds, like all Alsatians, have a distinctive head with upright ears and a domed forehead. White Shepherds often have much less of a stop. Otherwise, all colors of Shepherds have a moderately long body length to height ratio, a short to medium dense double coat, and a long, plush tail. Silver Shepherds are usually aloof with strangers, using inherent discretion and degree of socialization to detect threats. They should be polite, only attacking when they have exhausted all other means of intimidation. A silver German Shepherd is rare. Silver shepherd work in the police force, search and rescue, and the military, where the emphasis on silver German Shepherd appearance is not a factor. As family dogs , German Shepherds are loyal and affectionate. They have a tendency to bond with one person, although they extend their protection to the entire household. Persistent work will help German Shepherds bond with multiple family members and handlers. Like any German Shepherd, silver Shepherds are intelligent and bold with excellent guarding instincts. They require a trainer who can carry out commands and positive reinforcement consistently and confidently. German Shepherds may challenge an individual who shows uncertainty or otherwise fails to gain their respect. They do not have any more health challenges than Shepherds of other colors. Epilepsy — Unexplained seizures.
bernedoodle puppies for sale dallas tx - A Brief History of the Chocolate Goldendoodle The super cute face of a Chocolate Goldendoodle Goldendoodles are generally considered to be light brown, which is why only a few people are aware of the chocolate Goldendoodle. As a result, the chocolate-colored coat can be confusing for them. Poodles come in various dark colors, such as grey, brown, blue, black, although they also have brighter colors like white and silver. On the other hand, the usual colors for Golden Retrievers include cream, white, and red. Despite being a crossbreed between dark and bright-colored breeds, it is the dominant nature of the Poodle that resulted in the chocolate color. However, as the chocolate Goldendoodle grows polder, the color changes to brown with silver or faded brown. While the chocolate color is highly sought after in Goldendoodles, Chocolate Goldendoodles are not considered a rare breed. This is because the color is not exclusive to the Goldendoodle and can be found in other breeds, such as the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. However, it is worth noting that not all Goldendoodles come in the chocolate color. Goldendoodles can come in a variety of coat colors, including cream, black, red , and apricot, among others. The color of a Goldendoodle's coat will depend on the genetics of its parent breeds and the specific breeding practices of the breeder. When searching for a Chocolate Goldendoodle, it is important to do your research and find a reputable breeder who follows ethical breeding practices. A responsible breeder will prioritize the health and well-being of their dogs and work to produce puppies with desirable traits, including a chocolate-colored coat. Understanding the Coat Types of Chocolate Goldendoodles The coat of a Chocolate Goldendoodle can vary depending on the genetics of its parent breeds, making it challenging to predict exactly what kind of coat a puppy will have. However, understanding the different coat types of Poodles and Golden Retrievers can give you a good idea of what to expect from your Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat. Poodle coats come in a variety of textures, including curly, wavy, and straight. They also come in different densities, from thick and fluffy to fine and silky. Poodles can have a single coat or a double coat, with the latter being more common in smaller Poodle breeds. Double-coated Poodles have a dense, soft undercoat and a topcoat that is coarser and curly. Golden Retriever coats are typically straight or wavy and have a dense, water-repellent undercoat. Their topcoat is longer and can be either flat or slightly wavy. Golden Retrievers shed seasonally, so you can expect some level of shedding from your Chocolate Goldendoodle, especially during shedding season. When a Poodle and a Golden Retriever are bred, their offspring can inherit any combination of these coat types. Chocolate Goldendoodles can have a straight, wavy, or curly coat, and it can be dense or silky, depending on the specific genetics of the parents. Some Chocolate Goldendoodles will have a single coat, while others will have a double coat. This type of coat is usually straight or slightly wavy, with a soft and smooth texture. The coat may be shorter than other coat types, making it less prone to matting and tangling. Straight Chocolate Goldendoodles do shed, but they require minimal grooming, such as brushing once or twice a week, and occasional trimming to maintain the coat's length and shape. This coat is usually tight and springy, with a soft and plush texture. Curly Chocolate Goldendoodles are typically low-shedding and hypoallergenic, making them a great option for people with allergies. However, the tight curls require regular grooming, including frequent brushing and clipping to prevent matting and tangling. Professional grooming every weeks is recommended for this coat type. Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Coat The Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Coat is a beautiful and low-maintenance coat type that is a cross between the straight and curly coat types. This type of coat is usually longer than the straight coat and has a gentle wave or loose curl. The coat may have a shaggy appearance, especially around the ears and face, adding to its charming appearance. This coat type requires moderate grooming, such as regular brushing and occasional trimming to keep the coat from matting or tangling. Shaggy or Wavy Chocolate Goldendoodles are low-shedding but may require professional grooming every weeks. It is not uncommon for Chocolate Goldendoodles to change color as they grow older. This change in color is a natural part of the dog's aging process and is caused by several factors, including genetics, sun exposure, and the environment. One of the main reasons for the change in color is due to genetics. The genes responsible for coat color can be turned on and off throughout a dog's life, leading to changes in color over time. Additionally, certain coat colors can be dominant over others, which can affect how a dog's coat develops as they grow. Sun exposure can also play a role in changing the color of a Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat. Just like human hair, a dog's coat can lighten or darken due to sun exposure. Exposure to sunlight can bleach the coat, causing it to become lighter, or darken the coat, leading to a more vibrant color. Finally, the environment can also impact a Chocolate Goldendoodle's coat color. Exposure to certain chemicals or pollutants in the air or water can affect the coat's texture and color, leading to changes in the dog's appearance over time. Generally, chocolate Goldendoodles are much like other Goldendoodle varieties, as they are also smart, friendly, and playful. For starters, the chocolate Goldendoodle is among the 13 Goldendoodles colors we have to date. Like the other colors of this mixed breed dog, chocolate Goldendoodles can come in patterns like sable, parti , merle , brindle, tuxedo, phantom, and abstract. However, since chocolate Goldendoodles are hybrid dogs, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC and other international purebred dog registries. This is why these beautifully-colored dogs cannot show off their coats and stunning looks in conformation shows organized by the AKC. The same is true with other Golden Retriever and Poodle mixes. Are Chocolate Goldendoodles Rare? Unfortunately, chocolate Goldendoodles are quite rare. The chocolate color is a recessive gene, which means both parents need to carry the chocolate color gene to produce a Goldendoodle. Producing a chocolate Goldendoodle can be quite difficult because Golden Retrievers do not have the chocolate gene. Thus, breeders need to breed a Poodle with a Goldendoodle that carries the gene. However, while it may take some time to find a breeder that produces this color, the chocolate Goldendoodle is not as rare as blue, gray, and silver Goldendoodles. Apart from their chocolate-colored coats, they possess the same traits and features that characterize Goldendoodles. On average, a standard Goldendoodle is a medium-sized dog that typically grows about 23 to 29 inches in height and weighs 60 to 85 pounds. However, do not be surprised to find Toy, Miniature, and medium-sized Goldendoodles. Their size will depend on what Poodle size variation was used in the breeding process. Chocolate Goldendoodles may also feature a soft-textured coat that can either be curly, wavy, or straight. Furthermore, these dogs have slightly elongated, well-built, and muscular bodies. Its face is characterized by long eyebrows, mustaches, and proportionate muzzles. Its oval eyes often come in dark brown or blue. As with any other mixed-breed dog, the appearance of chocolate Goldendoodles can vary widely depending on which parent has more dominant genes. However, it is best to personally verify the Poodle size used in breeding. In simpler terms, it is impossible to produce a chocolate Goldendoodle by randomly mating a Golden Retriever and a chocolate-colored Poodle. This is because Golden Retrievers do not have the recessive brown gene. That said, to produce a chocolate or brown Goldendoodle, breeders need to mate chocolate Poodles with Goldendoodles carrying the chocolate gene. The problem, however, is that not every Goldendoodle has the said gene. The generation of the Goldendoodle matters a lot to breeders who want to end up with a chocolate Goldendoodle. Do Chocolate Goldendoodles Stay Brown? Chocolate Goldendoodles change their coat color as they grow older. Their coat color may fade to silvery beige or light brown. Do All Chocolate Goldendoodles Fade? Most, but not all, chocolate Goldendoodles fade to a light brown or silvery beige color as they mature. This is a very normal process that Goldendoodles of certain colors, such as chocolate and black, undergo. As previously mentioned, the color of chocolate Goldendoodles fades to a light brown, often a silvery beige, as they mature. Unfortunately, the genes for silvering have not yet been isolated, making it difficult to predict whether silvering will occur in your dog. There is currently no genetic testing available that can determine silvering in Goldendoodles. That is why you can expect no less from chocolate Goldendoodles. Chocolate Goldendoodles are friendly dogs. They love getting attention, which is why they love being around people. They do not shy away from strangers, making them not good as guard dogs. However friendly as these dogs may seem, brown Goldendoodles have favorites, just like their Poodle parents. They tend to cling to one person in the household. If you have kids at home, you should not worry about getting them along with your chocolate Goldendoodle, as they are very gentle and patient with kids. However, as always, it is best to supervise them. Likewise, this hybrid is also a great option if you have other animals living at home. The problem, however, is that chocolate Goldendoodles do not thrive when left alone for long periods. These dogs are so highly social that they are prone to developing separation anxiety when left alone. Given the right amount of attention, love, and care, a chocolate Goldendoodle will make a great addition to any family. These natural charmers will surely please you with their natural humor and wit. Chocolate Goldendoodle Lifespan and Health Issues The chocolate Goldendoodle is a generally healthy breed that lives between 10 and 15 years, given enough love, care, and a proper diet. However, since both its parents are predisposed to various health issues, chocolate Goldendoodles are also prone to developing or acquiring some of them. Here are some of the most common health problems seen in chocolate Goldendoodles: Hip Dysplasia: Hip dysplasia is common in both Golden Retrievers and Standard Poodles, making chocolate Goldendoodles susceptible to the same problem. This health issue occurs when the hip joints fail to develop normally, resulting in the dislocation of the ball and socket. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : Although progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a non-painful condition, this inherited eye disease progresses slowly over time, eventually leading to complete blindness in dogs. Unfortunately, there is no cure available for PRA, but most dogs adapt well to their vision loss and continue to have a good life, given proper care and support. It is caused by a lack of protein, which is required to assist platelets in forming clots to seal broken blood arteries. In affected dogs, uncontrolled bleeding may cause death. As always, it is important to have your chocolate Goldendoodle routinely examined by a qualified veterinarian. This is to ensure that your dog is in good condition and avoids serious health conditions. You should note, though, that the expenses do not end there. The initial costs of owning a brown Goldendoodle puppy are summarized in the table below: Type of Expense. When compared to the parents, we can wholeheartedly say, that the Chocolate Goldendoodle lives longer than the Golden Retriever and is about the same lifespan as that of the Poodle parent. In comparison to other Goldendoodle color variations, the Chocolate Goldendoodle shares pretty much the same lifespan as other color variations of the Goldendoodle. They all live for as long as 15 years on average which is quite good, as you get to enjoy the loveable company of your loveable furry friend for a much longer time period. However, you should note that the lifespan can be affected by health defects and genetic issues which would be discussed later in the article. Training the Chocolate Goldendoodle One of the best traits of the Goldendoodle, in general, is their high intelligence which helps make training the Goldendoodle a lot easier and enjoyable. The chocolate Goldendoodle is no exception as they are very intelligent and would adapt to being trained with much ease. When compared to the Golden Retriever and Poodle parents, the Goldendoodle inherits its high intelligence from the Poodle although, the Golden Retriever is also an intelligent dog breed. They are more likely to learn a trick faster than most dog breeds out there. The Chocolate Goldendoodle is eager and willing to learn new tricks, this makes them perfect dogs for show competitions as well as suitable dogs for therapy, service, and work dogs. As long as the Goldendoodle is trained early, it would pick up new tricks with relative ease. Every chocolate Goldendoodle breed is best trained using positive reinforcement. This ensures you make use of positive treats and non-strict corrections to keep the puppy motivated and well trained. Try as much as possible to not get frustrated while teaching your Goldendoodle new tricks, as this would do more harm than good. Common Chocolate Goldendoodle Health Problems Before getting a Chocolate Goldendoodle puppy, or any Goldendoodle puppy from a breeder, it is quite important that you ask or enquire from the Goldendoodle breeder about the breeding practice used or employed by the Goldendoodle, as even though the Goldendoodle has a higher tolerance to diseases and health defects than the Golden Retriever or Poodle parent, they still suffer from following conditions; 1. Hip Dysplasia The dysplasia of the hip or elbow is quite common with large dog breeds like the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. It occurs when there is an unusual displacement from the regular working of the ball and socket joint. It is a very painful condition that could limit or altogether stop the movement of the Goldendoodle. Goldendoodles with Hip dysplasia might require surgery if the condition gets too critical. Cataracts Also known as cloudy eyes, cataracts can be quite damaging for the Goldendoodle, in this case, the Goldendoodle would develop a white blur in his vision that could later grow to completely render the Goldendoodle blind. With Older Goldendoodles, the condition might go bad, as the condition can not be treated. However, younger Goldendoodles could later regain their sight when surgery has been done. Skin Sensitivity Over time, your Goldendoodle might develop skin issues that can result from poor grooming practices and improper health practices as well. These can lead to skin reactions, spots, and other blemishes that can leave the Goldendoodle uncomfortable and in pain. Because of their sensitive skin, it is required you observe regular Grooming for the Goldendoodle to keep them happy and playful. Arthritis Arthritis is quite rare for the Goldendoodle, but it does happen and can be very painful or life-threatening for the beautiful furry angel. A Goldendoodle that suffers from Arthritis would suffer from inflamed joints, which could lead to overall discomfort for the Goldendoodle puppy. Seizures Seizures or Epilepsy are quite common for the Goldendoodle. Also life-threatening, Goldendoodles inherit this terrible condition from both breeding parents of the Golden Retriever and the Poodle. This condition could be avoided with proper breeding practices, this is why you should always deal with a reputable breeder. As it has already been stated, the Goldendoodle with a straight coat is prone to more shedding than a Goldendoodle with a curly or shaggy coat. However, all Goldendoodles are considered hypoallergenic, with low to no shedding coats. This, therefore, affects the required amount of grooming each chocolate Goldendoodle would require. For Goldendoodles with long straight coats, they would need to be groomed a minimum of 2 to 3 times a year. This would involve bathing and brushing the coat. For a Goldendoodle with a wavy or curly coat, 4 to 5 times a year of regular grooming would be required. This can be achieved with regular brushing, dental care, and also nail trimmings.
