John Fox-Strangeways, was born in , was created Baron Tweedmouth in , and died in .The name yellow retriever was the original name of the breed, but this has been largely superseded in later years by that of golden retriever, one coined by the late Lord Harcourt, after he had bought one or more puppies from a keeper, and after he had been given a number of those dogs which remained in the Guisachan kennels by Lord Tweedmouth, when he sold the property in or .Lord Harcourt immediately began to exhibit his dogs on the show-bench, and was no doubt in search of a new title in order to form a new class, for neither Tweedmouth nor Ilchester breeds had ever been shown. However, it is fair to add that the Guisachan dogs had generally become darker in colour in the intervening years. Even at the beginning of this century, there was confusion about the origin of the breed. Black, wavy-coated retrievers, and in certain circles in the south of Scotland, black Labradors, were in great vogue. Indeed, except among member of the Tweedmouth and Ilchester families and their intimate friends, yellow retrievers were little known. Consequently their subsequent spread to all parts of the country was not easily foreseen. It is late in the day, therefore, to try to re-assemble facts and search out the truth. But unless I set about it now, it may never be done and the true story will be lost forever. Fortunately, one unimpeachable source of information is still available. Sir Dudley Marjoribanks kept a studbook from onwards in which he recorded the name and breeding of his setters, his pointers, his greyhounds and his spaniels. Beagles come into the story in for a year or two; a retriever, evidently black, is mentioned in and not another till .Irish spaniels are mentioned in ; and deerhounds supersede greyhounds for the first time in .In he bought Guisachan; and thenceforward his kennel records were greatly increased. Our business, however, is with retrievers. The sources whence they came were carefully set down, but colour was not mentioned. After the omission scarcely matters, for the names of the dogs give a clue to what we want to know. This book is now in the possession of Lady Pentland, a grand-daughter of Sir Dudley, and a daughter of the late Lord and Lady Aberdeen, and she has most kindly placed at my disposal, with other important and interesting papers connected with the problem. From these I an able to give new facts, which clearly conflict with certain suppositions that have been circulated in recent years, and also to introduce an entirely new line of thought. One story is that Sir Dudley purchased at Brighton about the year , from a dog trainer in a traveling circus, three yellow dogs. These animals, no doubt sheep dogs, were said to have been brought from the Region of the Caucasus and one of them, specified as Nous, was said to have been taken to Guisachan, and in due course to have become the first of the yellow breed. Everyone, I think, agrees that Nous was yellow, and that he was the first. June, , purchd. At Brighton. But it does occur to one that this dog might have been one of the Russians Sancho seems a good circus name! And might not Sir Dudley, having already a magnificent dog, Nous i. Sancho, however, was clearly a failure; so much so that Sir Dudley never troubled even to make a note about his origin. He never appears again in the book; and he certainly never had any place at all in the future breeding of yellow retrievers. This suggestion, however, would account for the story, agreed by keepers years later, that a Russian dog did once appear at Guisachan. They talked of the arrival of Nous in ; but as he was already there, perhaps Sancho was the dog of which they spoke. So, clearly, Russian dogs can be dismissed from the problem for good and all. Much of this talk about the Caucasus, however, was revived about by Colonel the Hon. William le Poer Trench, who owned a number of yellow dogs of Guisachan origin. He claimed that his strain went back to the original Nous breed. And that was quite possible, even probable. But his obsession on the subject of the Russian cross, induced him to journey to the Caucasus. There he was told that the dogs were with the sheep on the high ground at that season of the year. If he would pay the price, one would be found for him. He left his money; but no dog ever appeared! The studbook gives us plain facts. Nevertheless, a few notes may be desirable to supplement the information given above, and to prove my case, after Sir Dudley Marjoribanks purchase of Guisachan in , he never had more than four retrievers in the kennels until .I shall have more to say about these dogs in due course. Well, I am going to explain here: When I began breeding the Designer Dogs, most folks were unfamiliar with the Havanese breed since they are fairly new to America. They have that wonderful sweet personality as the ShihTzu but do not have the flat face which contributes to teeth and sinus problems. I know that the ShihPoo mix breed is very hard to improve on -but nothing is impossible! It can be done with the HavaPoo! I spelled it that way on purpose! In fact, they are very energetic and playful. With all this energy to burn, they should be getting at least 1 hour of exercise a day. They also need a couple of hours of indoor playtime, so buy them a few toys. Grooming and Shedding Grooming your Poovanese is fairly easy. A simple brush every other day to prevent tangles and matting will be plenty. Only give them a bath when they are particularly smelly or if they have been playing around in the mud. Bathing a dog too much can wash away their natural oils, leaving their coat dry and dull. General dog grooming should also be taken care of. This includes brushing their teeth twice a week, trimming their nails, and cleaning their ears. Feeding and Diet Knowing what to feed your Havapoo dog is not an exact science, you should feed them a balanced doggy diet with all their nutritional needs in check. Is a longer muzzle the answer? Unfortunately this question can not be answered with a simple yes or no. The length of the muzzle of a French Bulldog is purely for esthetic purposes. The length of the muzzle is largely determined by supply and demand. Breeders usually only breed the type that the buyer is looking for. In the end they all would like to give their puppies a new home. But when a dog because of this physical appearance has a higher rate in abnormalities, it must be absolutely clear for all dog lovers that this can not be the goal. A short muzle on its own is not the cause of breathing difficulties. The origin of breathing problems starts deeper in the throat, not visible from the outside. Even muzzle length or size of the nostrils is not always conclusive. Nevertheless the selection must be made towards more open nostrils and a clear stated muzzle from a side angle of view, because it certainly has a relation to the rest of the abnormalities. When a CT scan is made of a French Bulldog, we can see that the amount of tissue in mouth and nose area is the same of that in a dog with a muzzle that is of normal length! All this tissue is compressed like an accordion, it has to go somewhere in the end… This results in a palate that is too long, teeth and jaws that are not adjusted properly to the short skull shape. Also the tongue and nose cavities are not adjusted. This has a lot of influence on the breathing, and causes less quality of life. Left a Shepherd-like dog, on the right a Pug. The first symptom of trouble is making sound when breathing. Unfortunately that does not automatically mean that dogs with silent breathing can have no breathing difficulties. Some breeders tried to breed the slanting nose back to a distinct nose length and wide open nostrils. They immediately noticed the difference! Researchers encountered that when the muzzle length became shorter, the risk of BOAS became significantly larger. BOAS was only seen in dogs with a muzzle length wich was less than half of the length of the skull. Obesity and a thick, short neck also were factors in enlarging breathing difficulties. How long or short should the muzzle be? Anatomy plays a great role in this, it is important for other organs to fulle develop. In a short neck organs are compressed, which results in a shorter trachea. The neck takes care of balance in the head. The neck can only function properly when it is free in movement. It is common for French Bulldogs that they are not flexible at all, the neck can barely move. Head and neck almost become one. This dogs can not move freely, wich is obviously a burden. Breeders must ensure a fully opened trachea and a normal esophagus, sufficient widht in the throat cavities and in the larynx. The palate must be free of excrescent soft tissue. The tongue must not be too long and thick, and the nostrils must be open without tapering on the inside. Just looking at muzzle length does not mean the rest of the elements are correct. It is obvious that a snubbed nose with narrow nostrils and a short, wide neck should be avoided as much as possible. It is a difficult topic. It can be confusing, but it is definitely much debated. The future of the French Bulldog breed lies in the hands of breeders, judges, breed clubs and owners. A French Bulldog is a dog that is supposed to have a short muzzle, but at the same time he must have tons of energy and resilience. A muzzle is a very important sense organ and it must be recorgnized as such from a side angle view. Puppy buyers also have the power to turn the tides. When you are visiting a breeder, ask what they are doing to improve the overall health of the breed. Ask what the breeder undertakes to insure his animals are absolutely suitable for breeding. Only when there will be more attention for this problem we can solve it! It is hard to imagine how a French Bulldog must feel when it must fight for every breath of air.
