Santa Margarita, CA .Vocality level 4 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament Few breeds so richly deserve their popularity as does the Labrador Retriever. When trained, the breed is obedient and amiable and tolerates the antics of children, other dogs, and other pets. The Lab is a calm house dog, playful yard dog, and intense field dog, all on the same day. Labs are eager to please, enjoys learning, and excel in obedience. It is a powerful breed that loves to swim and retrieve. Labradors need daily physical and mental challenges to keep occupied. A bored Lab can get into trouble! Upkeep Labradors are active and sociable dogs. They need daily exercise, preferably in the form of retrieving and swimming. Owners with swimming pools either must fence them out or be prepared to share the pool with dogs. The Lab coat sheds water easily. Weekly brushing is needed to remove dead hair. Health Major concerns: CHD, elbow dysplasia, OCD, obesity, patellar luxation Minor concerns: cataract, CPRA, hot spots, retinal dysplasia, hypothyroidism Occasionally seen: diabetes, entropion, distichiasis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse Suggested tests: hip, elbow, eye, exercise-induced collapse DNA , centronuclear myopathy , knee Life span: 10—12 years History The original Labradors were all-purpose water dogs originating in Newfoundland, not Labrador. Not only did the breed not originate in Labrador, but it also was not originally called the Labrador Retriever. These dogs—medium-sized black dogs with close hair—not only retrieved game but also retrieved fish, pulled small fishing boats through icy water and helped the fisherman in any task involving swimming. Eventually, the breed died out in Newfoundland in large part because of a heavy dog tax. However, a core of Labradors had been taken to England in the early s, and it is from these dogs, along with crosses to other retrievers, that the breed continued. It was also in England that the breed earned its reputation as an extraordinary retriever of upland game. Initially, black labs were favored over yellow or chocolate colors. By the early s, the other colors had become more accepted. The popularity of this breed has grown steadily until the Labrador Retriever became the most popular breed in America in and remains so today. Related Content. As my website states, I am not like other breeders in many ways. First, I want to explain how the average Labrador breeder raises their pups the first few weeks of their life. They expect these tiny pups without their senses fully developed to find their way to a nipple without being smothered. I understand that this is what dogs do in the wild, but this is also why many puppies die in the wild. .Then, on top of that they hope that each of the pups will get enough milk on it's own to make it through the 1st week of life. They expect the Lab mom to do all the work, so they don't have to lose a wink of sleep. This is all very sad to say but it's true. I, on the other hand, care about each individual pup's life, I care that each and every one of them survive so that they can live a full and happy life. So, I make sure that each individual pup is given outstanding care. How do I do this? I began with hand raising each one of my pups the first 3 weeks of its life. What do I mean by hand raise my pup? It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. I am up now about to give my pups their 3 am feeding. Hope this helps you all understand what is put into each litter. She is from our breeding between Cash and Bella, both parents are health certified. Sugar is overnight crate trained and has some other training. She has the sweetest disposition; we absolutely love her! However, we have had a family emergency that has come up that may cause us to have to put Sugar up for sale. If you would be interested in Sugar, please email us and let us know about yourself, and the lifestyle that you would be able to give Sugar. We will be reviewing potential families who would be interested in Sugar and pick the best family for her, and make a decision later this month. They are given constant positive attention their whole time with us. We have a big game room that we call the "Labby Room" This room is designated for our labs and their lab puppies. The puppies get a lot of interaction with all our kids in this room. They also become well adjusted to all the sounds of the home life, like the sound of a vacuum. When the pups are born, I will contact you and inform you on how many pups were born. We will post up pictures of each litter soon after they are born. And try to post weekly picture updates so you can watch the puppies grow. We will also post video on our face book page. When the pups are 6 to 7 weeks of age, I will contact you to set up an appointment for you choose and pick up your pup at 8 weeks of age. If you had first deposit in for a male pup you will have first choice of all the males available. If you have second deposit in, you will have the next appointment to choose from the males that are left and so forth. This order of reserving pups would also apply to the females as well. We honor all reservations on a puppy by not selling the puppy to anyone else. So if you are interested in a litter and don't want to make a reservation until "you see the litter". An appointment can be made to view the left-over puppies when they are 10 weeks old, and no sooner. No appointments will be allowed at a younger age, except for the families that made a prior reservation. We will not allow our baby puppies to be exposed to potential life threatening viruses from people that are just "shopping". We wait until all puppies that have been reserved are safely home, before we show any left-over puppies. Any left-over pups will be at least 10 weeks of age before any viewings are allowed, to insure they have at least had 2 sets of shots in. The only other accommodation that we can offer is a zoom call, so you can see the pups before you make a reservation. Most of our sweet puppies are sold before they are even born. Reserve your puppy today! Our Prices: Our base prices are listed below, according to current demand for colors and genders. Note: Sales tax is due on any pups or merchandise sold in California. By request, and for an additional fee, we often transport puppies to Davis. We used to be able to ship puppies via airplane all over the continental United States, but more restrictions apply at this time, due to Covid, extreme heat, or extreme cold. Unfortunately, we no longer ship puppies to Hawaii, due to their quarantine restrictions. Can I pick out my Labrador Retriever puppy before the designated adoption date? Sorry, but no. Most people will not know which puppy they are choosing until puppy adoption day. What supplies do we need for our new puppy? So many people ask us this question, we wrote a blog giving our advice. You can read our blog here. Do you raise American or English Labs? Both, actually, but mainly American. Only a few of our dogs are pure English; some are a blend of American and English. Litters are usually pure American or a blend of American and English. None, so far, are pure English. If you scroll down to the bottom of the videos page you can also view links to past litters of Labrador puppies for your viewing pleasure. We may, however, be able to refer you to hunting dog trainers, so feel free to shoot us an email asking us about that. Marble Mountain Kennels.

As with many things, prevention is always better than treatment. Taking your Boxer to regular veterinary appointments is one of the best things you can do for their health, along with consistent love and care at home. One of the best things you can do at home is brush your dog's teeth regularly to help prevent painful periodontal disease and avoid pricey dental treatments in the future. Keeping your Boxer at a healthy weight is crucial for their longevity, overall health, and happiness. If your Boxer is overweight, talk to your veterinarian to develop a weight loss strategy so that you can get them back on track. Unfortunately, veterinary bills can be costly with many treatments for emergencies and illnesses, such as heart problems, being thousands of dollars to treat. When surveyed, .The financial safety net provided by pet insurance is why pet insurance is worth it for many pet parents. Keep in mind that even healthy behaviors, like exercise, can be overdone. Reputable breeders will let you meet the parents and give you contacts from owners of puppies born in previous litters. Most Boxer puppies will correspond just fine to the ranges mentioned for their age. It is super important to not rush the growing process. Dogs that are overweight can experience problems later on in life that might have been avoided by maintaining an appropriate body condition. Moreover, the veterinarian can have the pup checked for possible health conditions causing the slow growth. Photo by otsphoto on Shutterstock Even with late bloomers, there is no reason to worry. Damage due to wrong feeding can be avoided by using high-quality premium food and sticking to the recommendations according to weight and age on the labels. Never miss out on consulting your vet on the topic first — they will be glad to guide you through it! Boxer Growth Stages Until they reach adulthood, Boxers go through 3 growth stages. The general difference between the growth stages is how fast the puppy grows during the period and how they appear in posture and body condition. The first stage is from birth until they are 2 weeks of age. After the second week, the growth rate slows down. Most breeders wean the puppies off around the 4th-5th week. At 18 months of age, you can probably introduce your companion as a fully developed, curious, and independent adult Boxer. Boxer puppies have somewhere between 2. At the end of the first stage, they can reach around 4. At 1 month of age, their stuffed muscle figure comes at about 5. By the time they are 16 weeks old, males weigh lbs .Male Boxers are expected to have approximately lbs .In the next six months, the growth slows down to about lbs 0. Male Boxers should weigh around lbs kg by the time they reach 6 months of age. Female boxer puppies are expected to have lbs kg when they are half a year old. Since the Boxer qualifies as a medium to large breed, it takes longer for them to reach their full-sized version compared to other smaller breeds. There are exceptions when Boxers complete the growth at 20, even 24 months. Female Boxers that are done growing up weigh approximately lbs kg and stand .Their male counterparts have between 60 and 70 lbs kg and are 23 to 25 inches cm tall. In the meantime provide quality food, regular exercise, and maintain regular veterinary check-ups to ensure their well-being. As with all other dog breeds, some adult Boxers will be smaller than the standard dimensions of the breed. On the other hand, there is a handful of those that are larger than the standard too. Genetics is the most probable cause for this. Rarely do Boxers end up being smaller than the rest due to low production of the growth hormone. Luckily growth hormone problems in Boxers are very rare and other breeds such as the Miniature Pinscher, Spitz, or Karelian Bear Dog are more prone to the condition. Growth defects in dogs can appear due to Dwarfism Achondroplasia. Minor deformities can be surgically corrected, but again with a dubious prognosis. In Conclusion Understanding the growth chart will help you understand what role nutrition, diet, and exercise plays and adjust accordingly. Getting rid of excess weight or ruling out health issues is something you and your vet can work on together. Disclaimer: This blog post does not substitute veterinary attention and does not intend to do so. I am not a veterinarian or pet nutritionist. If your dog shows any sign of illness, call your vet. Post navigation. We can see when your Boxer puppy will become their adult size and reach its full height. Your new puppy will grow rapidly for the first two weeks. Your pup should weigh between 4. When your doggo is between six and eight weeks old, they should also prepare for their first vaccinations. Males should be around 17 to 19 inches .At one year old, females should weigh between 55 and 65 pounds .Many factors are involved. For your doggo to maintain a healthy lifestyle, monitoring their growth and weight is a good idea. How can you tell how big a Boxer will get? Within the first six months of age, your Boxer will grow rapidly. You can tell how big your pooch may get by looking at their paws and head. For example, your furry friend may look disproportionate for a while. However, some parts of their body will catch up to the rest within a few months or even a few weeks. Is your Boxer at a healthy weight? You can typically tell whether or not your Boxer is at a healthy weight by their ribs. But, on the other hand, if you can feel and see their ribs, they may be underweight. Always check with your vet to be on the safe side. What are some Boxer dog body shape changes? Boxer puppies grow in height faster than their weight gain. When this dog breed matures and becomes an adult, they will have a wide chest. But, overall, Boxer is strong and lean. In addition, different factors are involved when it comes to impacting how your dog grows. In addition, reputable breeders should have this information. The nutrition you feed your pooch can help or hinder their growth. For example, if you feed them dog food with unhealthy fillers and lots of fat, they may become obese, thus hurting their growth and overall health. Will neutering or spaying your Boxer affect their growth? Spaying or neutering your Boxer has more pros than cons. For example, some health conditions may include hip dyslexia, bloat, acne, arthritis, and cancer. The best way to ensure your pooch remains healthy is to work together with your veterinarian. Take your dog to regular vet appointments at least once per year for an annual check-up. In addition, talk to your vet about the type of dog food and exercise your Boxer should be getting. If your doggo is overweight or underweight, the vet will be able to help. Finally, properly groom your doggo. Physical activity Boxers need plenty of room to run around and stretch their legs. However, they love to play and enjoy a round of fetch with you in a fenced-in yard. Just be sure to wait until their bones and joints are fully developed before taking them for jogs or hikes. Otherwise, they could have joint issues later in life. Dangers of stunted or accelerated growth If your Boxer is a little bigger or small than the others of its breed, that may not necessarily be a bad thing. However, some issues can occur. For example, your pooch may be smaller due to a growth hormone deficiency. This controls the growth rate in dogs, their bone and teeth development and maintains a healthy coat. Dwarfism could also be the reason. When do Boxers stop growing? You can expect your Boxer to be fully grown and stop growing between 18 and 24 months of age. This system works on a scale of one to nine. One means your pup is underweight and unhealthy. Nine means they are extremely overweight. The ideal place on the scale where you want your large dog to be is a five. What should you do if your Boxer is growing too fast? Growth disorders can occur in larger dogs, such as Boxers. If you notice your dog growing too fast, talk to your vet first. How to help your Boxer lose weight if he is overweight? This includes their diet and exercise. Take a look at what dog food you feed your pooch. In addition, do you feed your doggo people food and table scraps? Do Boxer mixes vary in size? If you want to learn more, you can read about Boxer mixes here. How Big Is Your Boxer? These happy doggos are a delight to have around. Boxers are great companions dogs for anyone young or old. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. We have answers. Breed Title Goldador Puppies Temperament Goldadors are an amazing combination of the intelligence and trainability of the Labrador and the friendly, gentle personality of the Golden Retriever. With their outgoing, friendly character and sweet disposition, Goldadors make excellent family pets around children and other animals as they have a great aptitude for understanding people. In terms of temperament, these beloved pups are highly sociable but not overly boisterous or hyper; they enjoy playing fetch but rest just as happily on your lap or at your feet while you work. Golden Labrador Retriever Puppy Health Considerations Though generally very happy and long-lived — with an average lifespan of around years — our Goldadors for sale are not without their unique health concerns. Like every breed of dog, there are a few conditions you should be aware of before you consider purchasing one of our Golden Labrador Retriever puppies for sale. Understanding the risks allows you to know the signs and prevent small health concerns from turning into big ones. Finding a Golden Labrador puppy for sale from a reputable breeder can also dramatically — although, not eliminate — the risk of your dog developing some of these conditions. Depending on the climate they live in, Goldadors may need regular baths — however omitting shampoo once or twice a year will ensure their coat retains its natural oils. Finally it is recommended to check the ears regularly and trim nails as needed. Adopted Golden Labrador Retriever Puppies. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Labrador is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States. They are a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The goal was to combine these two highly popular breeds to create a dog that exhibits the best traits from both of them. A mixed dog breed can take after one parent breed more than the other or any combination of traits from the parent breeds. This can result in some variation among individual puppies. But, overall, a Golden Labrador is friendly, intelligent, energetic, and affectionate. Although this mixed breed is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable organizations like the American Canine Hybrid Club and more. This large designer breed is characterized by their energetic personality and friendly disposition. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are open, friendly, and affectionate, so you can expect the same in your Golden Labrador puppy. They are very playful and get along fabulously with children, other dogs, and other pets. They may be alert enough to be a good watchdog, but they do not make good guard dogs. They are instinctually more interested in making new friends and getting attention than they are with anything else. They can have a slight prey drive, but most of the time, they are just curious and interested in playing and making friends. The Golden Labrador is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Their large size and energy tend to make them a better fit for larger homes with room to run. They can adapt well to apartment living as long as they are given enough exercise and mental stimulation. But, small spaces can be a challenge because they are large dogs that are so playful and energetic. Golden Labradors do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they love their families, thrive on attention, and get bored easily, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. As a mixed breed, a Golden Labrador can inherit the potential health conditions of one or both of the parent breeds. Although the Golden Labrador is a relatively healthy dog breed, there are some potential health conditions to be aware of. These include eye problems like progressive retinal atrophy and joint issues common to large dogs like patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. Like their parent breeds, the Golden Labrador can be prone to weight gain, which does put them at risk of diabetes later in life. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to ensure genetic conditions are not being passed on to puppies. Regular vet visits, proper nutrition, and sufficient exercise can help keep your dog healthy and reduce preventable diseases. Both of the parent breeds in this cross are highly intelligent and highly trainable, so the Golden Labrador should be no different. Eager to please their owners, these dogs pick up on things quickly and respond best to positive training methods focused on praise and reward. This dog breed, like both of the parent breeds, is a great fit for owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. Their high energy can sometimes be a challenge, so you may want to consider puppy training and obedience classes. This designer dog breed may be called a Golden Labrador, but they can show up in many colors. A cream, yellow, or golden coat may be the most common, but a Golden Labrador can also have a black, red, or brown coat. It tends to be a dense double coat that is short or medium in length. This dog breed will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year as the seasons change. During seasonal changes, you may want to increase to daily brushing. Not only will this make your dog more comfortable, but it will also decrease the amount of loose fur that ends up around your house. In addition to coat care, you will also need to handle nail, ear, and dental care for your Golden Labrador. Floppy ears tend to trap more dirt, moisture, and debris, which makes them more prone to developing ear infections than ears that stick straight up. Unfortunately, this is often overlooked, which is why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. Beyond that, you can use vet-approved dental hygiene chews and treats and even a specially-formulated dental care diet to supplement your efforts. Getting them used to it early and keeping it a positive experience can make grooming a lot easier as your puppy grows into a big dog! Plus, it can become a bonding experience that your dog looks forward to. Golden Labradors are high-energy dogs. Daily walks, playtime, and some extra activity are generally enough for this dog to stay happy and healthy. But, they will probably tire out before you do! Their friendly nature makes the Golden Labrador a great fit for trips to the dog park. Try teaching your dog how to play frisbee. With their retriever background, it could become one of their favorite activities. You can also train your Golden Labrador for several dog sports like agility, dock diving, obedience, and more. A fully-grown Golden Labrador usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Golden Labrador generally lives years. Although Golden Labrador is the most popular name for this designer dog breed, they are also sometimes referred to as a Goldador or a Goldador Retriever. Featured Golden Labrador Article. Despite its regal name, Golden Retrievers are popular dogs in the Midwest. This breeder, based in Howell, Michigan, has been breeding these dogs for almost 20 years. Their puppies are well-rounded, with regular vaccinations, deworming, and vet visits. Choosing the right puppy is not as difficult as you might think. While this breed is highly intelligent, it also requires regular exercise. Otherwise, it can display destructive or aggressive behavior. Regardless of size, this breed has some health concerns and unique requirements. A Golden Retriever Lab mix is the perfect companion for a family with an active lifestyle and plenty of time to play with them. Listed below are some tips for choosing the right puppy for your home. A Labrador-Golden Retriever mix makes for an excellent family pet. This breed of dog loves children and is always willing to play with them. However, keep in mind that children should always be supervised, as this breed is very playful. While the Golden Retriever and Labrador parent breeds are similar in size, hybrid dogs can vary in length. A male Goldador may reach 22 inches in height and weigh 70 pounds, while a female Goldador can grow to be between 60 to 80 pounds. Goldador puppies are generally larger than Labrador puppies but will take after their parents in size. A Labrador-Golden Retriever breeder located in Michigan should be able to answer your questions about puppy health. The breeder of merit will guarantee the health and wellness of his puppies. Ensure your Labrador puppy receives the proper nutrition, and you can rest assured that your new pet is in good hands. So, do not miss out on this golden opportunity to save a lot of money on a new dog! They also retain a playful puppy-like spirit into adulthood, making them an excellent choice for any household. Golden retrievers are very lovable and adaptable and make great family pets. When it comes to color, a Golden Labrador Lab puppy may look more like the Labrador breed. The golden parent will likely inherit the coat that is longer and has more feathering, while the Lab parent will have a shorter and more sparse coat. It is also likely that a Golden Labrador Golden Retriever mix will have a coat that is a bit shorter and slicker than the purebred. A Labrador Golden Retriever mix should have a relatively short coat but will grow into the same coat pattern as the purebred. A Goldador will have the coat of a Labrador and a Golden Retriever. The coat will be a mix of the two breeds and will look like either one, depending on where they were born. A Goldador will likely be a little bit like a Lab one day, and more like a Golden the next. You can expect a Goldador to be a perfect mix of the two! Share this:.

Show a Lab to water and it will retrieve all day: balls, sticks, small boats and even children who might happen to go for a swim. Descended from dogs found in Newfoundland by explorers, fishermen and settlers, the Labrador Retriever evolved by natural selection. An excellent retriever of fish and game, these dogs have been known by several names, among them the Black Water Dog, the Lesser Newfoundland and the St. John's Dog. In the early s, the breed was introduced to Britain, where it was eventually crossed with other sporting breeds. The final product was the strong, sturdy, happy Labrador Retriever, which is America's most popular dog, thanks to its outgoing, eager-to-please and loving temperament. Males usually measure .Weight for males ranges from 65 to 80 pounds, with females averaging about 10 pounds less. The coat is short, dense and hard in colors of black, yellow, silver, charcoal, chocolate and many shades in the middle such as the white and champagne Lab. Labs enjoy all outdoor exercise but are especially fond of swimming. We were able to make trips to visit Boone while he grew, Wendy was always accommodating and super nice. During these visits we also became more acquainted with Boone's mom and grandmom, they are both loving and gentle souls. These are qualities we were looking for in our next dog as we have young grandchildren that will be a big part of Boone's life. We have had Boone for two weeks now. And he surprises us daily with how smart he is. We could not be happier with the start in life he had at Wendy's, his breeding, and HIM!! And I haven't even mentioned how absolutely beautiful Boone is! We collectively decided on getting a dog. We wanted a happy, smart, loyal breed that could fit in and grow with our kids. With those criteria we started looking for a Labrador Retriever. We soon drove to the farm to pick out our puppy. From that moment, until today, we have been so happy with our choice! Our silver lab, Rumble Rainier, has been value added to our home. He is perfect with our sons, he learned our routines quickly, and he keeps us smiling every day. Say Hi to Boomer. They were amazing to work with thru the whole process. We first picked him out in January and we got to visit every other week to watch him grow and get him familiar with us. He was the cutest little brown fur ball and it was fun to see him interact with all his siblings and his mom. He was also very loved and handled by their kids during the times we could not visit. He is a year old now and a very healthy and beautiful lab. He loves being outside, playing fetch, playing with his soccer ball, or being anywhere our 12 year old daughter is. He has been a great addition to our family! They really love their dogs and know how to breed healthy, well-adjusted dogs. Our Boomer loves all dogs, adults and children because of this. Lifespan Sociability So, the most obvious thing that you need to make sure you have before buying a Golden Newfie is space and lots of it. This pooch weighs between 75 and pounds and can measure up to 29 inches tall. Not only do you need space in the home, but you also need access to outdoor space so that he can play and snooze in the fresh air. You might want to invest in a bigger sofa too because the Golden Newfie sees himself as a lapdog. Get ready for the numb leg life! This guy is needy, and so he needs to be homed with a family that can spend most of their time with him. Do you spend long hours in the office? Sadly this hybrid hound is not for you. He craves human company and becomes very anxious and sad without it. This will lead to separation anxiety, and an anxious dog with the power and jaws that he has means that your homely possessions will not be around for long. So, someone will need to be around for most of the day. This guy sheds moderately all year round, and he experiences a full-on shed during shedding season. There is also the issue of doggy drool. If he takes after his Newfie parent, he will definitely be a drooler. Although the Golden Newfie is calm in the home, he needs a lot of exercise. His exercise will not need to be intense or vigorous like other breeds need, but he will need a steady 1-hour walk every day. Taking him to the local lake will boost your mom or dad points for sure! The cost of welcoming a Golden Newfie into your life is higher than most other breeds. This is a significant factor to consider before you buy one of these guys. Being a large to giant breed, he will need a large bed, large toys, large harnesses, etc. He also eats a lot of food, and it is also likely that his medical costs will be higher too. The Golden Newfie is rarely golden. Despite his name and the color of his Golden Retriever parent, this guy is rarely gold. This is unusual for mixed pups who tend to be a mixture of their parents, rather than inheriting the typical color of one parent. If you do find a rarer color, he is likely to be much more expensive than a classic black Golden Newfie. The Golden Newfie might have webbed feet. His Newfoundland parent has webbed feet, so this guy will likely have them, too. This will not cause any complications. Instead, it makes him a stronger swimmer and an excellent water rescue dog. Not only is his Newfie parent able to pull in fishing nets and boat lines, but he can save a fully grown man from drowning. So the Golden Newfie is a useful chap to have around. Okay, so he can bark, but he almost always chooses not too. Instead, he will growl at those who he suspects are up to no good or putting his family in danger. His low growl and humungous size are enough to put any intruder off. This sweet guy is super affectionate with his family. He loves nothing more than to chill with his family, receiving all the belly rubs for being the best boy. He will paw at you for more attention, and this seriously needy dog will never leave you alone. This is great if you are seeking a doggy partner in crime, but not so much if you prefer more independent dogs. His neediness quickly develops into separation anxiety, more so than most other dogs. This is why he must be placed with a family where someone can be home for most of the day. Do not underestimate his need for human company, or try to stretch a few hours absence into 5 or 6, this will not do for the Golden Newfie. In return for your company and love, he will provide you with hours of fun and plenty of personality. Although he is calm in the home, he will happily frolic in the backyard and play games with his family. Fancy an afternoon of silly activities? He has a protective nature inherited from his Newfie parent and will stand his ground and growl if he feels the need to. Thankfully his sheer size and deep growl are enough to keep intruders away. Instead, he prefers a more tranquil atmosphere. He loves children and will probably choose to sit with them over his parents any day of the week. Both breeds are known to have a sweet spot for younger members of the family, so he will be doubly caring. His Newfie parent is famous for helping out with family children , the most notable being Brumus, who helped Senator Robert Kennedy with his 11 children. Are These Dogs Good for Families? He is versatile and adaptable to most family environments and dynamics, just as long as you meet his needs. The only thing that might be a cause for concern is his ginormous size. Although he adores children, he could smother a child without even realizing it. For this reason, you always need to supervise a Golden Newfie when there are young children around. As long as he is socialized, he should do well with dogs of all shapes and sizes. So he makes a prime canine candidate for a multi-dog or multi-pet household. He should be fed a high-quality kibble that is specially designed for large or giant breeds. Giant breeds have unique nutritional needs, and all-life stage kibbles will not do here. These kibbles will support his heavily laden joints and his slower metabolism. This is particularly important during his puppy stage because the right nutrition can decrease his chances of developing muscular-skeletal diseases. He will demand a constant supply of snacks and fatty human foods, but you need to resist. The Golden Newfie can easily pile on the pounds, so you need to monitor his food intake and treats carefully. An overweight Golden Newfie is an unhappy and unhealthy one. You need to be mindful that being a large dog, the Golden Newfie is susceptible to suffering from Gastric Dilation Volvulus. Never feed him immediately before or after exercise, because this can bring on this life-threatening condition. Make yourself aware of the symptoms, and always keep these in the back of your mind. Instead, he would much prefer long country walks and a few playtime sessions in the yard with his family. Not only will he become stubbornly lazy if you allow him to be, but he needs to get his heart pumping and his large body moving to stay healthy. As you already know, he will love the water, so be sure to include this in your list of activities for the week. An unruly and arrogant Golden Newfie will be a struggle to deal with, even for the strongest and experienced owners. Taking him down to the local doggy park is a great way to exercise his body, stimulate his mind, and remind him how to be polite. You will want to think about leash training this boy from the start because a Golden Newfie who pulls on the leash will be difficult to handle and unenjoyable to walk. It is also a great way to teach him who is in charge. Crate training is also advised for this anxious pup. It also gives you peace of mind knowing that your dog is happy in his safe-spot when you are out. He has a thick and wavy double coat that will need brushing every single day. Otherwise, his jacket will quickly become matted, which is not only painful for him, but it can lead to skin conditions. Brushing also strengthens the bond with your canine, and he will love it for sure. Bathtime will not be an issue for this pooch. Always rinse and dry thoroughly too. You will need to trim his claws regularly, as well as cleaning his eyes and ears. The Golden Newfie suffers from regular ear infections if not cleaned thoroughly. This is an excellent lifespan for a dog of his size. Minor Conditions. Vet visits, injections and health checks are all too often in the early stages and, following all that, the final decision you have to make is whether or not to have your Boxer spayed or neutered. Spayed or Neutered? The procedure usually involves cutting a small incision in the abdomen. Whilst recommendations vary, vets typically suggest that you should have your Boxer spayed or neutered between the ages of four and nine months. This is thought to have long-term health benefits, as well as helping to prevent behavioural traits, such as marking and aggression. Whilst some recommend spaying before first heat as young as five months , others suggest that this can increase the risk of mammary tumours. We would always recommend consulting your vet for a personalised opinion. Most studies have said that spaying a dog can calm them down in most cases. However, it should not be seen as a cure-all for puppy problems. There are many reasons why you should have your Boxer spayed or neutered, not least of all because it will likely improve their quality of life and stop you from worrying about a litter of puppies. Spaying is proven to reduce the risk of breast cancer and uterine infections, and neutering similarly prevents testicular cancer. So, if you want to prevent these major Boxer killers, neutering and spaying is a sure fire way. Neutering your male Boxer will also ensure that he is on his best behaviour at all times. Neutering prevents aggressive and territorial behaviours, and also means that he wont be spending his entire walk hunting for a partner. So, if you want to prevent these embarrassments, get your Boxer neutered early on! See also Is Your Boxer Bored? Millions of animals are euthanised every year because there are simply not enough willing owners to cater for endless litters of puppies. Having this done will prevent unwanted litters and ultimately save the lives of millions of baby Boxer that would end up in shelters. Remember… No, the procedure is not painful. Female Boxers can reproduce as young as four months old, and male Boxers can as of six months. When should we neuter dogs? March 01, When should we neuter dogs? It depends By R. Scott Nolen Published on February 18, Spaying and neutering pet dogs and cats not meant for breeding has long been the standard in veterinary medicine. Yet, recent research linking gonadectomy to higher incidences of certain diseases in neutered dogs is raising questions about a procedure once thought relatively safe. Earlier this year, the AVMA House of Delegates devoted a portion of its Veterinary Information Forum to this issue after two studies published in the journal Frontiers in Veterinary Science in July reported associations between neutering and higher rates of joint disorders and cancers in some mixed-breed dogs and dogs of particular breeds. The team of veterinary researchers from the University of California-Davis also reported certain dog breeds were at greater risk of disease if spayed or neutered before 1 year of age and, especially, if spayed or neutered before 6 months of age. For instance, the recovery time is longer and the procedure is more expensive for older dogs than for younger dogs undergoing ovariohysterectomy. Retention of deciduous teeth is not uncommon in toy dog breeds, and retained teeth have frequently been removed at the same time the dog was neutered. That may not be possible if gonadectomy is delayed until after the first year. Science says? Veterinarians and the animal shelter community have long promoted neutering pet dogs and cats not meant for breeding, most notably to prevent litters of unwanted puppies and kittens. Although various alternatives to gonad removal exist, such as vasectomies and hysterectomies, gonadectomy is by far the most common procedure practiced by veterinarians. Still, the relationship between sex hormones and canine health is not well understood. But there is reason to suspect that absence may contribute to negative health outcomes as well. Benjamin Hart led the research teams that produced the recently published studies. The first, published July 7, looked at joint disorders, cancers, and urinary incontinence associated with spaying and neutering in 35 dog breeds. The second, published July 31, covered joint disease and cancers in mixed-breed dogs of various weights. Each individual animal must be considered, and veterinarians should inform the client about all the issues and let them make an informed decision about their pet. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. Both reports provide guidelines for minimizing disease risks associated with spaying and neutering. For example, the recommendation for female Golden Retrievers, given the increased occurrence of cancers regardless of age at the time of spaying, is to leave females intact or spay them at 1 year of age and remain vigilant for cancers. Hart explained. As with all studies linking gonadectomy with higher disease rates, the UC-Davis studies have been criticized. During the HOD information forum, Dr. The American College of Theriogenologists and the Society for Theriogenology maintain that companion animals not intended for breeding should be spayed or neutered unless the procedure is contraindicated. Moreover, any potential consequences to the individual animal must be weighed against the necessity for population management. Kendall Houlihan, an AVMA assistant director of animal welfare The simple fact is that there is no single recommendation concerning gonadectomy that is appropriate for every dog. There are just too many variables to account for, including breed, sex, age, and body type. Whether to spay or neuter must therefore be decided on a case-by-case basis. During the HOD reference committee discussions, Dr. Rens van Dobbenburgh, president of the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe, said similar talks were taking place across the Atlantic, where opinions on the timing of spay or neuter are mixed. The good news is there is no shortage of resources to help veterinarians in that decision-making process. Its purpose is to provide WSAVA members the latest information to aid them in making recommendations as to the most appropriate approach to neutering in their patients. This is done to improve behavior and prevent reproduction. Neutering can be done as early as 8 weeks of age. This is a very important surgery that should only be done by a veterinarian who has experience performing this type of procedure. The surgery involves removing the testicles so that sperm production will cease and no more hormones will be produced by these glands. It also helps with behavioral problems in dogs that originate from sexual frustration, such as mounting and humping. Yes, boxers do calm down after being spayed or neutered, but this is not the whole picture you should know. It may help reduce some unwanted behaviors such as roaming and marking, but there are many other factors that can contribute to these behaviors as well. You see, boxers are a very active breed. They need lots of exercise and playtime in order to release the energy that comes with being young, active dogs. Benefits of Neutering a Boxer Dog While it does seem cruel, there are actually a number of benefits when you neuter your boxer, most health-related. A study has concluded that the lifespan of dogs increased after being neutered. Its findings suggest that dogs will live an average of .When dogs are neutered, they are less likely to develop prostate cancer, which can be a serious condition in older dogs. Neutering your pup also reduces his risk of contracting a urinary tract infection, which can be painful and inconvenient. It can also help prevent your boxer from developing testicular cancer. This reduces the risk of contracting a contagious disease like canine herpes, which can be easily transmitted during mating season. Neutering your boxer dog also makes him less aggressive and less likely to bite, or start humping when they are young puppies. Cons of Neutering a Boxer Dog There are a few cons to neutering your boxer dog, and these should be considered carefully before making a final decision. The first one is that there is a slight risk of your dog developing a joint disorder as a result of neutering. This frequently occurs in large breed dogs when they are neutered too young before one year old. Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and cranial cruciate ligament injuries are examples of common joint issues that can develop. The fact that a change in behavior is not always assured after neutering your boxer is possibly another drawback. After surgery, some dogs actually become more aggressive, but this is more of an anomaly than the rule. It rarely happens to most dog breeds except spaniels such as the Cocker Spaniel, and it is not a health risk but rather just an aesthetic one. Also: best age to spay a female boxer The best age to neuter a male boxer or spay a female boxer is after 2 years old. Most veterinarians will advise neutering a Boxer between the ages of 6 and 12 months as they have not reached sexual maturity and can be easily trained to be housebroken. In fact, this also becomes commonly regurgitated around the internet in articles which is not that accurate. A study discovered that this is not always the case and should be looked at on a breed-to-breed basis just like Dobermans need to be neutered after 1 year of age. Neutering your male boxer does not affect his ability to fight or bite, but it does reduce his aggression toward other dogs. It also reduces the risk of prostate disease and testicular cancer later in life. There are some articles and comments out there that talk about neutering your dog before 6 months, which is very dangerous advice to follow. There runs a high risk of your boxer experiencing significant side effects of neutering. Neutering your boxer dog before 6 months of age can result in his height and growth being stunted and may also affect his ability to develop strong bones and muscles, which can be problematic if he is expected to put on a lot of weight as an adult. They will be able to tell you precisely when your boxer is ready to be neutered and help you determine whether the benefits outweigh the risks. Now, thanks to technology, you can speak to one without leaving your home.
youtube miniature labradoodle puppies - Buy a larger crate so that it continues to comfortably house your dog as they grow. A full-grown German Shepherd needs space to stand, sit, lie down, and stretch. Not to mention, turn around with ease. And most inch crates come with a wire divider for keeping your German Shepherd puppy in a smaller area as they potty train. This can cause joints and muscles to stiffen. An area too small can lead to tightness and stiffness, increase anxiety, and cause long-term joint damage if excessively used. But an area that is too large just takes up extra space. Contrary to what others may say, a puppy or smaller dog will go into a larger crate. You can easily use this metal divider to block off an area that is too large if it bothers you or your German Shepherd. All of the wire kennels on this page are recommended since they have free dividers included except the heavy-duty cage model. Is crating your German Shepherd cruel? For some owners who are new to the notion of crate training, confinement in such a small space might seem cruel or even a punishment. But free-roaming dogs in the wild seek shelter in small, covered spaces for safety from predators and environmental harm. Using the natural history of wild dogs, you can see how German Shepherds can easily be trained to view their kennel or crate as a safe cave or their own private home away from home. You can help them maintain this cozy space since you can take most crates with you wherever you and your German Shepherd go. Your German Shepherd puppy can even be trained to sleep quietly in their crate at night, giving them a warm spot that keeps you from accidentally tripping over them if they were left out and got under your feet. Do you want to learn how to easily crate train your dog using toys? The most common crate varieties are wire crates, plastic crates, and metal reinforced crates for escape artists. Wire crates are great for dogs to travel in or for camping. Keep in mind that wire crates are larger, so they tend to need more space for set-up. I prefer wire crates, as they fold flat for storage and are more economical to purchase. They also tend to last longer and stand up to the wear and tear of life with a German Shepherd. Plastic crates may feel more secure for your dog, as the walls are largely solid compared to the wire crates. But, plastic crates large enough for a German Shepherd tend to be more expensive, not last as long, and are better suited to short times during travel than for more frequent home use. Both plastic and metal crates can be strengthened using strategically placed zip ties to prevent rambunctious puppies and adult dogs from pushing apart the frame. For an escape artist, a rugged not collapsible reinforced preferably welded metal crate is best. These cages are humane when used for short periods of time to keep your German Shepherd from escaping and hurting themselves while unsupervised. They are bulky and need more space than wire or plastic crates, but will last you a lifetime. Some owners are inclined to choose a large-sized crate to give the dog lots of room, but they fail to remember to also make sure they have a wire divider to make the sleeping space smaller. Always opt for a wire divider that you can adjust and move as your German Shepherd grows into her larger crate. Once your dog is fully potty trained a larger crate will prove more useful as they have more room to stretch out and enjoy their comfortable private bedroom. Crate Location I advise placing the crate in an area of your house where both you and your German Shepherd can access it effortlessly at any time needed. I usually place a crate right beside my bed when I have a new puppy. I set another crate in a corner of my living room where I spend the most time during the day working or relaxing. Using two different locations for a crate is not only convenient, but it gives your German Shepherd the opportunity to find a spot away from family and noise should they want time to themselves. In particular, you must immediately clean their space when they soil the area or are sick in their crate. Step 1: Remove their toys, beds, blankets and all of the objects from their crate. Set the items to the side and wipe down their toys, cleaning them regularly with pet-safe disinfectant if they have any urine or feces on them. You can find some great toys for German Shepherds to replace the old, worn-out ones. Step 2: Wash their soft bedding materials. This is especially important if they have an accident in the crate, and it should be done as soon as possible to avoid cross-contamination to other items in the crate or house. Be sure the bedding is fully dry before replacing it back into the clean crate. Your dog should also have a German Shepherd bed to relax on when outside of their crate, and a crate mat or pad when inside their crate. Step 3: Dry the crate outside or in a well-ventilated area. I suggest washing the crate outside, with your garden hose. If you are unable to go outside, choose a room with tile floors that are easier to mop up, such as your kitchen, bathroom, or mud and laundry room. The room needs proper ventilation so that the cage can dry quickly. Use clean cloth towels or paper towels to wipe down the parts to help dry the crate quicker. Step 4: Finding the right cleaning solution. This is critical as some cleaning solutions are harmful and can make your dog sick if they are exposed to it. Never clean their crate with ammonia because ammonia tends to smell like urine to dogs. You could unintentionally encourage them to urinate in the crate if you clean it with ammonia. Here are a couple of good do-it-yourself cleaning solutions that you can mix up at your own home to save some money. Place the following in a spray bottle to make your own homemade crate cleanser: Squirt one part dish detergent to ten parts of warm water Use half a cup of white vinegar to one-gallon warm water Add half a cup of bleach to a gallon of cool water Always take safety precautions when mixing your own chemicals at home. Your GSD needs to have a soft place to rest, enough space to relax, and a comfortable temperature. Place the crate in an area out of busy zones. A quiet corner in the living room is good. Make sure the area has plenty of ventilation, but no cold drafts. Use a cover if needed. Use treats and praise when your dog is in the crate. Let your dog enjoy his meals in the crate while supervised. This creates a positive feeling with the kennel. Offer your dog a special toy to chew or play with when in the kennel. Make sure the toy is safe and supervise his toy time. Their collar can get caught between the bars or wire and cause significant damage to your dog! Use a PetSafe Breakaway Collar to prevent any unforeseen accidents! The breakaway collar stops your dog from hanging themselves by releasing them automatically. Dogs are more agile in their crates than you could imagine, especially puppies, and they get themselves in problems with their collars when you least expect it. Hit, kick, or strike the crate. With or without your dog in it, this creates a fear of the crate. Keep your dog in its kennel for more time than needed. Long times in a kennel can cause anxiety. Leave the kennel in the sun. Your home can get hot enough to cause overheating problems if left in a sunny spot for too long! Your dog could have problems eating the treat or tear the toy and eat it. Yell at your dog when in the kennel or use the area as punishment. A kennel is a safe spot, not a bad zone. German Shepherds are natural den animals source. They prefer and want a safe place to hide or even relax. A crate provides both safety and relaxation for your pet. They prevent unforeseen accidents, like the destruction of your property. Or worse, harm to your dog from staying alone all day left to their own devices. German shepherds, also known as Alsatians, belong to one of the large breeds of dogs. As they are medium to large dogs, they always need a large space to live. So what can be best for them, rather than a large-sized dog crate? To train your German Shepherd puppies, crates can be very helpful and supportive. In addition, they can also be great for older dogs and heavy breeds. As the dogs always need a small space where they can stay safe and feel protected, a crate can best serve the purpose. According to most veterinarians, dog parents should keep their puppies in crates from a very young age. Because of this, the puppy can learn how to feel comfortable in their own space where they can enjoy their treats and play with their favorite toys. German shepherds are loved all around the world because of their loyal nature and intelligence. Are you looking for the best crate for your german shepherd puppy? If you have recently adopted a new german shepherd puppy, you must be thinking of buying a small size crate for him. Is it better to buy a small crate until your pup becomes an adult? Or should you buy a large one that will fit even the large size when he grows? The answer to this question can be difficult because all the puppies have different requirements. However, every dog owner needs to buy a crate in which the puppy will feel more secure. A large enough crate will allow your German Shepherd puppy to stand up and turn around comfortably for him to mature into an adult. But there can be control problems if you try to potty train a puppy in a crate that is too large. A good rule of thumb is that the crate should be no larger than the backside of your German Shepherd puppy. Because soon, your GSD will go from a lap-sized dog to a dog that can crush your lap. If you choose a crate that is the proper size for your dog, crate training will go much more smoothly. For example, the right crate for a german shepherd will be the one in which your pup can rest but not large enough to initiate behavioral issues. Dividers are now included in many large crates on the market, which are a major advantage over the size issue. However, you will need to remove the crate divider and use the entire capacity of the crate at some point. Disadvantages of a Large Dog Crate Some people complain about a lack of space in their homes. Another disadvantage of using a crate that is too large for your dog is that it can be difficult to clean. Instead of sleeping in a large pet crate while housetraining your dog, he may use half of the crate as a toilet instead. Benefits of a Dog Crate for a German Shepherd The ideal crate size for a German Shepherd has now been determined, and it is time to consider the various purposes for which crates are used. Not all pet parents use German Shepherd crates to train their dogs, but there are a lot of them who do. Using the crate is even more helpful for a puppy as you can use the crate for their potty training. So, before buying the right size crate for your pup, make sure to consider these major factors. The best training rate for a german shepherd must have incorporated all the below-mentioned features. Material The crates are created using different materials, including plastic pans, metal door frames, wire or metal crates, and soft-sided crates made with soft fabric. Plastic pan crates are more reliable and good for dogs who love to scratch or chew because they are strong enough to withstand even a heavy chewer. While, a wire crate is easy to fold, inexpensive, and relatively durable. Soft crates are comfy, but they are not durable. Space The dog crate you choose should not be too small to make your pup feel restricted and full of anxiety. On the other hand, a crate that is too small will be harmful to their health. The crate should be big enough for a large breed dog to stand and lay down easily. Of course, your dog will be more comfortable standing, turning, and sleeping in a crate designed specifically for them. But it should not be too long to make him feel stray. Also, the inclusion of dividers in some crate brands allows you to adjust the space in the crate to your specific requirements. Durability It would be best if you buy a crate that can withstand the weight of powerful dogs like german shepherds. Additionally, if you do not complete crate training your dog, there might be a risk of him attempting to escape. Number of Doors Some brands also offer crates with two doors, which can be opened from either side. When deciding where to place the crate in your home, you will have more options with double doors. Dog parents should not use ammonia to clean their dog kennel because it has a smell similar to the urine of dogs. In addition, if you use ammonia to clean the crate, you may accidentally encourage your pup to urinate there. Also, take protective measures when preparing chemicals before cleaning. For example, keep your German Shepherd out of the way when cleaning their crate, rinse it to remove any inorganic chemicals, and dry the crate thoroughly before putting their toys back in. Different Types of Crates Crates for large dogs such as German shepherds are available in several types, including wooden crates, wire or metal crates, soft crates, plastic crates, etc. Plastic Portable Dog Crate As the name suggests, these crates are designed with strong plastic material to work best for small to medium dogs. These crates are lightweight and therefore portable. The plastic crate includes a swing door for easy entrance and exit. As these crates are portable, they contain an easy-to-grip handle for dog owners. According to their specifications, you can use these crates while traveling in cars or airplanes. These crates are easy to move around because they are foldable. Wire crates are available in several sizes, and all of them have an open wireframe design so that your pup can easily get a view of the surroundings. In addition, they are all easily cleanable and well-ventilated, and you can put on a soft cushion or extra blanket to make it comfier for your little friend. These crates work best for larger German Shepherds with aggressive chewing habits or other behavioral issues because they are indestructible. Soft-sided Dog Crate The dog crates with soft padding are the most comfortable and lightweight, great for traveling. However, these crates are made with soft nylon and mesh material, so they are destructible and not good for heavy chewers or aggressive dogs. Unfortunately, these crates are not easily portable. Heavy-duty Dog Crate Heavy-duty dog crates are best for large breeds like adult german shepherds, who usually try to destroy their crates during training. In addition, your dog will no longer try to escape from the crate if you teach him to like it and see it as his personal space. A dog should consider the crate a safe place, and you, as his caring parent, will have to ensure this. Exercise Needs Make no mistake, this is a very active breed, having descended from two highly active parent breeds. Owners who neglect exercising their pet will quickly bear witness to the consequences in just a day, as a pent-up samoyed shepherd mix will chew up shoes, furniture and any object they can fit their jaw in, much to the chagrin of their owners. Ultimately, you want your pet to thoroughly enjoy itself, if not tire itself off. Truly, the old adage a good dog is a tired one remains true here, as it will decrease the chances of it carrying inappropriate behavior indoors for the rest of the day. Health Risks There are no additional health risks that the german shepherd samoyed mix has in comparison to other breeds, as it is susceptible to the same health risks as any other dog. However, all mixed breeds have a higher disease tolerance and resistance due to genetic diversity. When in doubt, never hesitate to take your pet to the vet. Feeding The diet of a german shepherd samoyed mix should not differ from that of a regular dog of its size. This means that it should be eating high-quality protein foods either raw or in instant doggy packages, or with sweet potato and other starches mixed in to provide micronutrients. Occasionally you can reward it with treats or raw, meaty bones to chew on which kill two birds with one stone, as they clean their teeth as well as give them something to chew on. Avoid seafood, as your pet should avoid fish or shrimp for their fattiness salmon being the exception. Meat can be cooked by either baking or boiling with no seasoning whatsoever. The quantity of food will be roughly around pounds of food per month for a fully grown adult. Adults will eat naturally twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Since the German Shepherd is known for its protectiveness, this trait can easily be seen in the german shepherd samoyed mix. German Shepherd Samoyeds are a rather unique mix and can be quite hard to find. Thus, they can cost anywhere from the lowest a german shepherd puppy to the most expensive of samoyed purebreds. Are you looking for a predominantly-white furred dog with the dignity and guard-like personality of a german shepard but with the happy, carefree attitude and friendliness of a samoyed? Before you say yes to this mix, consider the following: Are you an outdoors, physically active person? Do you live in a colder climate, and if not- do you not mind constant shedding and grooming on a daily basis? Do you have a strong will in case your pet challenges your authority? Do you spend enough time at home to prevent your dog from feeling bored or lonely? If you answered yes to all these questions, then this mix may be the perfect pet for you. One of the easiest ways to give your pet the attention it needs is to enjoy a walk or outside activity together. Playing with your dog can maximize bonding as well as making sure it gets energy out of its system so that it can be relaxed and content indoors afterwards. Depending on the individual dog, as well as the temperament of its parents, your pooch may attempt to dominate you at times, trying to assert its authority instead. Compatibility with Kids Given proper socialization of both parents, the mixed offspring should have no problem with kids, as german shepherds are known to be good with kids due to their gentle patience and samoyeds are already quite friendly. Compatibility with Other Animals Both german shepherds and samoyeds are reported to be good with other dogs and pets in the family, provided that they have grown up with them and have been properly socialized. Socializing is the process of introducing a pup to the rules of doggy etiquette, where they learn what is appropriate doggy behavior and what is out of bounds. From youth they learn the proper ways to express play and frustration, and if denied this opportunity they can become estranged from the pack. If your german shepherd samoyed mix is barking and displaying more hostile behavior to not just your neighborhood dogs but your family pets, this can be one of the possible reasons for it doing so. To keep your Samoyed German Shepherd Mix looking his best, take him to a professional groomer several times throughout the year. Coat The coat of a German Shepherd Samoyed mix will depend on which parent it takes after. GSDs have dense undercoats with coarse medium-to-long hair that lay close to the body. Samoyeds also have dense undercoats but their outer coats stand straight out from the body, giving them a fluffier appearance. This could be biscuit, cream, white, or a combination of white and biscuit. Grooming Because of the lush hair and dense undercoats that they will inherit from both parents, you can expect the German Shepherd-Samoyed mix to shed substantially. They will shed throughout the year and more profusely for weeks during the spring and fall. To manage shedding, they will need a minimum of once-a-week brushing, but times a week would be ideal. Other grooming needs would be the same as any other large dog. They need to bathe once every 6 to 8 weeks and have their nails trimmed regularly unless they are worn down by their regular activities. They also need frequent tooth brushing and ear cleaning. Strength Keep in mind that Samoyeds initially worked as sled dogs hauling objects and people across brutal weather. On the other hand, German Shepherds are muscular with incredible bite strength. Given that both parents are strong working dogs, you can expect GSD-Samoyeds to have considerable strength. Speed As herders and protectors of livestock, both German Shepherds and Samoyeds were bred not only with awesome agility but also incredible speeds. Given the speed at which both parents can run, GSD-Samoyed crosses are expected to reach running speeds of approximately 30 miles per hour. Exercise Requirement German Shepherds are more energetic than Samoyeds, but not much more so. Combining these two breeds would undoubtedly result in high-energy dogs that need as much mental stimulation as physical activity. They thrive best with two minute walks per day or at least 30 minutes of strenuous exercise plus additional off-leash playtime. Mental stimulation keeps them from getting bored and diverting their energy and intelligence to less desirable activities. To keep them fulfilled and well behaved, you can give them jobs to do at home. You can also give them puzzle toys to play with or engage them in regular training sessions. Trainability According to a dog intelligence study led by a canine psychologist named Stanley Coren, German Shepherds are among the top tier of working dogs when it comes to intellect. It takes GSDs no more than five repetitions to pick up a new command. Although Samoyeds rank at the third tier, they are still considered to have above-average intelligence. It will take them anywhere from 15 to 20 repetitions to learn a new command. Although the two breeds vary in the rankings, GSD-Samoyed crosses are expected to have at least above-average intelligence. Combined with the work drive and eagerness to please of both breeds, this mix will be a highly trainable dog. Temperament Samoyed-German Shepherd mixes are affectionate with as well as protective of their family. Additionally, they are more likely to be friendly to strangers than their GSD parent. With proper socialization and careful introduction, they could also be good with young children and other pets. Samoyed-GSD crosses are not only energetic but also playful. Although they are known to be adaptable, they will thrive best when they have access to large spaces where they can play, explore, and burn off their excess energy. It is also important to note that these are vocal dogs that might develop a habit of barking excessively. Health German Shepherds and Samoyeds are generally healthy dogs. However, the overall health of their offspring will largely depend on the genetics of both parents. Before being allowed to mate, it is recommended for GSDs to undergo hip and elbow evaluations to rule out the possibility of producing puppies at risk of hip and elbow dysplasia. Samoyeds from responsible breeders are also tested for hip dysplasia. Additionally, it is advised for these dogs to undergo extensive retinal and cardiovascular evaluations. As long as both parents are from responsible breeders, a Samoyed-German Shepherd mix should live long and healthy lives. Lifespan German Shepherd-Samoyed mixes can live anywhere from 7 to 14 years old. Many factors will contribute to their lifespan. Apart from the genes they inherit from their parents, it helps to give them high-quality dog food and ample opportunities to exercise. Additionally, it helps to stay on top of parasite prevention measures and to take them in for regular vet checkups. Because the Samoyed-German Shepherd mix is a cross, it cannot be registered into the AKC nor compete in conformation events. Once in a while, however, you will come across a litter of Samoyed-GSDs that are the outcome of accidental mating or intentional breeding by the occasional enthusiasts of this cross. With good pedigrees and responsible breeding practices, GSD-Samoyeds are expected to be even-tempered and healthy. These pups are expected to be energetic, driven, and headstrong. Before buying or adopting one, make sure you have not only space for them to occupy but also the time, patience, and determination to train and exercise them and keep them well-behaved. They are very easy keepers as they do best on a small amount of food. They get along well with other dogs, pets, and people, but they were bred for herding. They may have a tendency to chase things or nip, so while they do get along with children, they may be a bit overwhelming for smaller children. This is also a breed that is active and needs exercise daily. They are eager to please and do very well with obedience training, herding, agility, and even pulling sleds and weights. They are slightly independent so training and socialization should be done early. Samoyeds will usually bark when greeting strangers, but the tail will be wagging at the same time. Heidi liked to run free, tapping into her sled dog ancestors. She was prone to wandering but loved having a job like pulling her owner on her skateboard. She was extremely intelligent and was difficult for the kids in the house to manage. She would outwit them and run between their legs to escape out the front door. She was not a fan of bath time and would go to extremes to hide. This was necessary, however, because of her long coat that was prone to shedding. After bathing, she would zoom around the house, showing off her exuberant personality. The owner loved her looks and felt she was even prettier than a purebred Samoyed. She was white and fluffy but had a soft brown hue. Her body was more streamlined thanks to the Shepherd side, and she had more speed than a typical Samoyed.
