Is it the shape of the eye that's at fault or failure of the supporting structures? The answer isn't necessarily so simple, and several factors may be involved. The truth is that vets don't know exactly what causes cherry eye in dogs. However, we do know that cherry eye is a hereditary trait. This is why we assume that a variety of genes determining eye and eyelid conformation are likely involved. Though dogs of any breed can develop this eye condition, bulldogs, Boston terriers , pugs , shih tzus and other brachycephalic breeds short-headed, flat-nosed dogs are predisposed. In these dogs, the conformation of the eye, in which the eye's orbit is shallow and the eye protrudes in a "bug-eyed" manner, seems to be a factor in the development of this condition. How Cherry Eye Can Affect Dogs If untreated, dogs with cherry eye typically develop swelling and dryness of the exposed mucous membranes, which can become abraded, especially if a displaced gland of the third eyelid proves irritating to the dog and it usually does. The subsequent rubbing or pawing at the eye leads not just to further inflammation of cherry eye but also to conjunctivitis and even corneal injury, which can ultimately result in eye damage and vision loss. Another problem with cherry eyes is their tendency to cause damage to the tear gland itself. Once displaced, circulation is impeded and the gland fails to function properly. Dry eye requires lifelong medication and, what's more, is usually irreversible. How to Treat Cherry Eye Cherry eye is considered a highly treatable condition. The first step for treatment involves the careful replacement of the gland in its normal position along with anti-inflammatory medication to relieve swelling and discomfort. Definitive treatment often requires surgery. Visiting a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist is strongly recommended in this case. The surgical approach to cherry eye requires a careful incision into the eyelid margin over the gland, replacing the gland deeper into the orbit, then suturing the incision closed. An Elizabethan collar and medication will be required postoperatively. Dogs who manage to rub their eyes in spite of a collar may need sedatives, home crating or hospitalization so that they can properly heal. Follow-up surgery may be required depending on how your dog's eye heals. There's a great deal written about cherry eye prevention, especially for breeds predisposed to it. Although some vets suggest that routine use of artificial tears can keep the gland from becoming irritated and therefore keep it from becoming dislodged, there is no research to suggest this route of prevention is successful. The most effective approach to prevention requires breeders to consistently spay and neuter all dogs who develop cherry eye, thereby limiting the possibility of this genetic trait in any future offspring. For healthy eyes and overall comfort, it's critical that this gland is preserved and reattached to its proper place. If you suspect your dog has cherry eye, it's important to see your vet as soon as possible. While not a medical emergency, the condition can cause health concerns over time. Left untreated, cherry eye can result in damage to the tear duct and cause chronic dry eye. The gland may also become more swollen over time and restrict blood flow. As swelling makes your dog more uncomfortable, he'll be tempted to scratch or paw at the eye, increasing the likelihood of damage and infection. At your initial vet visit, your veterinarian might prescribe dog-safe eye drops for cherry eye to reduce inflammation. These drops can also provide much-needed moisture for comfort and eye health. But eye drops are not a cure for cherry eye. Usually, the vet-recommended treatment for cherry eye in dogs is surgery to preserve the eyelid. Your vet should be able to preserve and correctly reposition the tear gland with a simple procedure. While it might be tempting to try and avoid surgery, when it comes to cherry eye, ointment and topical treatments won't address the root problem and your pup will likely need surgery later anyway. According to Vygantas, once the gland is out of position, it's unlikely to resolve itself without surgery. Still, even minor surgery can be stress-inducing as a pet owner. But rest assured: cherry eye surgery recovery is typically short and sweet. In fact, most pups are back to normal within a couple of weeks. In the meantime, your pup will have a follow-up appointment or two with her vet to check the surgical site. She'll also need to wear an e-collar aka the cone of shame during recovery to keep her eye safe from scratching, pawing, and infection. Cherry eye is not life-threatening, and the vast majority of dogs go on to live full lives with healthy eyes. If you're wondering if you should get a dog who has cherry eye—either from a rescue or a breeder—there are a few considerations to keep in mind. First, it's important to remember cherry eye is not contagious, so it poses no risk to you or other pets. However, surgical treatment of cherry eye can be expensive. Costs range from several hundred to thousands of dollars depending on the breed, your location, and your veterinarian's rates for surgical procedures. And, since as many as 45 percent of dogs that experience cherry eye in one eye will eventually have it in the other, you could very well end up doubling your expenses. The good news is, the simple cherry eye surgery should solve the problem for good. The most common complication of this surgery is the breakdown of the suture line and subsequent re-prolapse of the gland," Vygantas explains. If the suture does fail, another surgery is likely necessary. Still, Vygantas stresses that the condition is not an indicator of poor health or of other underlying conditions. If your pup has cherry eye, there's no reason she can't enjoy a long, happy, healthy life post-treatment. Is it Possible to Prevent Cherry Eye? Unfortunately, there's no way to keep your dog from developing cherry eye. But there are ways to give your pup the best chance at good health. Feed her a good diet and provide lots of exercise to maintain a healthy weight. Schedule an appointment with your vet to make sure she stays up-to-date on all preventative care and vaccinations , and reach out to your vet if you have any concerns about your pup's eye health. The guard hairs start first on the tail which becomes fluffy and long by the time they are six to eight months old. The Golden Retriever is a very popular breed that is a great family dog. A dog who spends a lot of their time outside will develop a thicker coat than a dog that spends a lot of time indoors. As earlier stated, the Golden Retriever seems to shed all year around. But what if it is excessive, like handfuls of hair falling out — is that normal? There are certain things that can affect the amount of fur that your Golden Retriever sheds. It may just be a growth phase that they are going through, but it could be an outside influence that is causing a change in their shedding pattern. Allergy reactions due to pollen, food, or even their grooming shampoo can be a factor. You may notice them scratching more than usual. A dog with allergies also suffers from eye or ear infections so check them regularly to ensure all is well. Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites can almost drive a dog mad, and you will notice your dog itching themselves and probably whining at the same time. That thick coat is an inviting place to call home for parasites, so check their coat carefully, especially after long walks in wooded areas. Stress can affect your Golden Retriever. They need to be with their owners. If your Golden Retriever is feeling left out, they may begin scratching themselves or fretting which can cause hair loss. With a consistent routine of grooming and washing your dog, you will remove the loose hair and be able to dispose of it. Sometimes when your dog is molting shedding their hair you can grab handfuls of their hair and pull gently. Brushing daily if possible is great, otherwise, try to groom them at least three times per week. Bathing, which is important to care for the coat, needs to be done once a week, or twice a month using a suitable mild dog shampoo. During the puppy stage , they are more of a light golden color, but as they mature, some of the longer guard hairs darken over time. A hot sunny climate where they spend a lot of time in the water can make for a lighter-colored coat. The Golden Retriever should not be shaved as it is the worst thing that you can do to your canine. The undercoat is designed to protect the dog from both hot and cold temperatures. The springtime shedding of the undercoat helps them cope with the heat.
