Their feet are webbed, which helped their ancestors master swimming and retrieving game. Additionally, Labradors have dewclaws which allow them to grip well while running. Some Labs have a white spot on the bottom of their paw, known as a Bolo spot. Labs are digitigrade animals, meaning they bear their weight on their paws. Labradors have five toes — including their dewclaw! The dewclaws on the hind legs are not attached by tendons, leaving only four functional toes. The front five toes are fully functional; however, the hind dewclaws are not. The front paws typically have a cluster of toes , and the dewclaw will be positioned higher up. Yellow Labs typically have lighter paw pad coloring than chocolate or black Labradors. Additionally, some Labs may have black and pink patches throughout the paws. As aforementioned, some Labs even have a white spot under their foot. Caring for Lab Paws Regular nail trimming is a must for all dogs as the nail could split and become painful. Labradors also need paw pad care. If your dog is active or spends time outside, their paw pads should be investigated often for cuts or other injuries. What Does the Breed Standard Say? Even the disqualifications! As these show the variation that can occur, even though these variations might not be preferred by breeders and judges. So, modern Labs can use these dew claws just as much as their earliest working ancestors! The rear dew claws are not attached, and therefore are not functional. They do shed quite a bit, though their shedding may be particularly bad during certain times of the year. We do recommend brushing them twice a week to reduce this fur loss. Otherwise, they can quickly cover your house with hair. These brushing sessions will also remove dirt from their coat, elongating the time they can wait between baths. This also spreads around the natural oils in their fur, which can keep their coat and skin healthier. These dogs do not need baths very much as all. We only recommend bathing them if they get physically dirty. Otherwise, they may need a bath every few months at the most. If they have wrinkles on their face, you will need to clean them regularly to prevent bacteria and moisture from building up. Dog wipes are often the best option for this. Both of their parents are prone to a variety of health problems, which this mixed breed can inherit as well. Of course, they do tend to be healthier than either of their parents. Many are still prone to a variety of health conditions, though. In particular, these dogs are prone to brachycephalic syndrome. This can make it difficult for them to breathe, as all the bones and facial muscles are shoved together. These dogs usually cannot breathe properly and have difficulty cooling themselves. This leaves them open to heat exhaustion and exercise-induced collapse. This condition is exactly why these canines are prone to snorting and coughing. Typically, dogs with long backs are more likely to develop this condition. It is usually caused by an injury, jumping, or some similar physical activity. Dogs with IVD will typically experience pain in their lower legs, followed by muscle weakness. Eventually, they will become paralyzed in their lower body, including their legs and bladder. Treatment for this condition includes crate rest and the occasional surgery. Surgery can be helpful for some canines, but it is expensive and does not always work. Minor Conditions. What Does a Daug Look Like? Pugs and dachshunds are similar in some ways and different in many others. As a result, the exact look of a wiener dog and pug mix will depend on which parent the pup takes more from. This means that the Pugsund will either have short legs like the dachshund or more standard length legs like the pug. The same goes for the muzzle — it will either be flat like that of a pug or elongated as it is with dachshunds. It can also be somewhere in between too. There are various possibilities for the coat of the Daug too as dachshunds can have various coats themselves. Dachshunds can be either wirehaired, longhaired, or smooth and the same goes for the Pugsund. Size-wise, things are a bit more standardized as both breeds tend to be small. If a pug is mixed with a miniature dachshund, however, the resulting Daug can be as short as inches cm. As for the weight, a Pugsund can weigh anywhere between 14 and 32 pounds kg. In short — a Daug can look in many different ways. Seeing the parents in person is also crucial and it will give you even more insight as to how your pup will turn out to look. Judging the personality of a mixed designer breed is always a challenge and the Pugsund is no exception. Both pugs and dachshunds are very strong-willed dogs too. As far as we can tell, however, the personality of the Daug breed appears relatively consistent given that but pugs and dachshunds are similar in a lot of ways. Both parent breeds are loving and playful family dogs, both can be a bit self-minded and independent, and both usually function best as single pets. All that seems to apply to the Pugsund as well. Obedience training itself is also very important as it is for both dachshunds and pugs. Another major thing to keep in mind is separation anxiety. Both dachshunds and pugs are very prone to developing anxiety and depressive tendencies when left home alone and the same goes for the Pugsund. As neither the dachshund nor the pug requires too much exercise, the same goes for the Daug. Or, it can have no harmful genetic predispositions at all. From the pug side, a Daug can have a flat face Brachycephalic Syndrome and all the corresponding respiratory problems, difficulties breathing, difficulties cooling, overheating due to high stress or temperatures, and so on. If the Daug is not flat-faced, however, none of these will be a problem. Never skip the regular vet check-ups and always maintain a good diet and a proper exercise regime to avoid most issues.
