Exercise Needs Labradors will adapt to the amount of time you can allocate for their exercise, as long as they are kept active. Ideally, a couple of hours a day being a good amount for a healthy adult. They love long walks with a chance to run and play off the lead. Many Labradors, unfortunately, become overweight because they are bought by families who want them for their reputation as the perfect dog with children, without realising that this is a working dog, who needs a lot of exercise and training to stay happy and healthy. As well as walks, a Labrador will revel in games and play with their owner, as they are highly social, and need to be involved in all family activities. Space Requirements The Labrador is a large, active breed who is at heart a country dog, and so needs a good-sized living space. As the Labrador size is large and their energy is high, they will appreciate a large garden and need access to the great outdoors for long walks. This can be a serious condition that causes both mental stress and is physically wearing on the body. We know how hard it is to leave the house when you know how rough your Boxer is going to have it. While there will always be times that you have to leave your Boxer home alone and there'll never be times that your dog will be happy to see you leave, there are definitely some things that you can do to make the situation better and to ease your dog's stress level. Signs and symptoms that Boxers Display when Having Separation Anxiety Signs of separation anxiety can begin long before an owner even leaves the house; as soon as a Boxer hears the car keys jingle or even sees that an owner is preparing to leave, his nerves can begin to get rattled. Many of the signs will begin after the owner leaves, and is not there to see it however it can often be heard from outside of the house… or neighbors may relay the disturbance. The most common signs include: Excessive barking - This can often be super intense. A dog may bark until he wears himself out; he'll rest and then start up again. Whether a puppy or adult, a Boxer can literally bark for hours until he is hoarse. Panic - The thing about separation anxiety is that the stress that a dog feels builds and builds as the time ticks by. While a dog may have slight anxiety at first, as the day goes by he can get worked up into a frenzy. This can make a Boxer literally bounce off the walls. A dog may repeatedly bash his body into walls, claw at the gates and try to escape his confines. Destructive chewing - This sort of behavior has nothing to do with chewing due to boredom; this will be uncontrolled chewing of anything that the dog can mouth. Items are often ripped apart and nothing is off limits; essentially anything that is within reach may be chomped to pieces. Urination and defecating - Despite the level of house training that a dog has, when overwhelming feelings of panic and stress develop when home alone, the Boxer may urinate and defecate with seemingly no control. In addition to this, it can go a step further where the dog then eats his feces Coprophagia which has several causes, but separation anxiety is one of them. Lasting depression - When a Boxer is totally worn out by a full day of anxiety, it have lasting effects. Some owners think that maybe their dog is mad at them for leaving them alone.A Boxer may not want to eat, exercise or play. He may have trouble relaxing and even sleeping. What Causes Separation Anxiety with Boxers This happens to both genders at the same rate and is not related to how a puppy or dog is treated when with his owners; i. The age that a Boxer develops separation anxiety is broad reaching; it can begin at any age at all even if the environment or duration of time left alone is unchanged. In some cases, a Boxer puppy will do just fine but then grow into this. The reason for this is typically because a puppy lives in the moment and his mind often jumps from one thought to the next; cognitive recognition is not fully developed when at a young age. As he matures, he becomes much more aware of time and is better able to realize when he is by himself. Older senior dogs can develop separation anxiety as well. This is often due to health issues that cause the Boxer to feel vulnerable and is coupled by the fact that an older dog often depends more on his owners for care than his younger counterparts. Another factor is that vision and hearing loss, which is common with senior dogs, can make a Boxer feel antsy; being alone only amplifies those feelings. Continued below How to Help a Boxer with Separation Anxiety There are several things that you can do to make a Boxer puppy or dog cope better when left home alone. Doing just one of these elements will not often make much of a difference, however when most or all of these are implemented, improvement can be seen within just days. This is really crucial. If the area that a Boxer is kept in is too small, this can make a Boxer feel confined and this is already a breed that is prone to claustrophobia. However if the area is too large, this is counterproductive as well. When a dog is left alone to roam a large empty house, he often does much worse than when placed in a smaller, safe area that has all his belongings and needs in one space. Young Boxer puppies do well in canine portable indoor playpens. Most adult Boxers do well if they are placed in a gated off room such as the kitchen; however do be sure to 'puppy-proof' the room no matter the age of the Boxer. All cabinets must have child-proof locks, trash must be secured, etc. Do keep in mind that Boxers do best with natural light coming into the room and when in an area that is very familiar; using a basement or other area that is dark or that the dog is not typically in will make things much worse. As stated above, dogs do best when they are in a room that is well-lit by natural sunlight as this can combat feelings of isolation when home alone, however it is always helpful to leave on a lamp or overhead light as well. Even if you normally return home well before the sun sets, if it happens to rain or even if a storm is close by and the sky becomes cloudy, this can make a house very dark. Dogs that have separation anxiety are often sensitive to light changes; each will have a tipping point…. This is another great tip that can really help dogs with separation anxiety. While you won't be able to trick a Boxer into thinking that he's not alone, hearing pleasant music or voices can have a calming effect. Be careful about which station or channel you choose to make sure that it has appropriate programming all throughout the day; what may be a nice talk show in the morning could turn into a screaming match on Jerry Springer by the afternoon and dogs can relax or tense up simply by the vibe of the noises that they are hearing. Some owners skip this one because their Boxer normally does not show any interest. However, once that same dog is home alone, he will focus on what's around him and a good sized Kong filled with kibble and peanut butter can keep a lonely dog occupied for quite a while. To encourage the use of treat-release toys any meal that would be left out in a bowl for consumption can be replaced with the same amount stuffed into these types of toys. Some dogs do best when able to look at the outside world; it can draw their attention to something new and can offer a feeling that they are not as confined as they really are. However, for others, this may be a situation where every single thing that passes by is a trigger for barking. If your Boxer doesn't do well with windows, you may want to close the shades and curtains. If he does do better with a view, having his area near windows or even sliders can help quite a bit. What do all living creatures have in common? A heartbeat. Just hearing this can offer comfort to a dog that is by himself. And you don't have to bring in another dog to offer this. There are toys that are essentially large stuffed animals that emit a soothing heartbeat. Many young puppies will take comfort and look at this as a protector; adults and seniors may 'mother' the toy regardless of gender. Don't be surprised if this becomes your Boxer's new best friend. Some dogs do just fine during the first few hours, but as the day wears on, the stress builds until it becomes unbearable. Any unpleasant situation seems worse as the time ticks by… and when a dog has separation anxiety, even a tiny break can give him a 'reset' button. If you can't break away and go home for lunch, you may need to reach out for some help. Some options are to have a friend, family member, neighbor or even a hired dog walker offer a 30 minute break about halfway through the day. During this time, your Boxer can be taken outside for bathroom needs and then be exercised which allows a healthy release of pent-up energy. While your Boxer probably has a zillion toys already, do take note of how many he actually plays with and if enough of them are the right type for when he's home alone. Toys to help with separation anxiety must do 1 or all of these 3 things: Draw in his focus, offer textures and durability that will satisfy chewing urges or be interactive. There are 3 types of training that should be done: 1- Train your Boxer to not pick up on cues that you're leaving. Canines are remarkably smart. Just about anything that is part of your morning routine before leaving for work is a trigger that can make a Boxer start to feel stressed. This can include making your morning coffee, looking for your keys, putting on your coat, reading the paper while eating breakfast, etc. Most dogs quickly figure out that when these things happen, they are in for a long day alone. This can be reversed. When you are home, at random times you'll want to grab your keys or do any other task that is normally done in the morning… but then either do not leave or leave for a very short amount of time. When you do leave for these 'practice' runs, vary the amount of time that you're gone… 10 minutes one day, 20 the next. When you leave, do this in a very casual way. Far too many owners anticipate a Boxer's anxiety and try to soothe the dog before leaving with all sorts of attention and petting. It's best leave in a calm, matter-of-fact way. Coming home should be a calm event as well. Many owners will rush over to their Boxer and this can cause a burst of confused emotion and well as confirm that the dog was correct in being upset that the owner was away. It's best to enter and take a few minutes to check the mail or get a drink and then approach and release the Boxer. The only exception, of course, would be in the puppy or dog had an urgent bathroom need. Finally, don't place your Boxer in his spot right before leaving; this is particularly applicable for Boxer puppies that are placed in playpens. It's better to have him there a good 20 minutes before you actually go so that he does not develop negative association with the area. When you are home, have the pup spend some time there so that he sees that it does not always mean that you will be gone. Ideally, you'll want to allow for at least 30 minute each morning to walk your Boxer , allow for bathroom needs and have quality interaction before leaving. This is easier said than done and most people rush around to get ready for work; however if you can wake up a bit earlier this can go a long way. Should You Get Another Dog? In most cases, when a Boxer has another dog with him, this does eliminate the issue of separation anxiety. We would never advise someone to take on the huge responsibility of having more than one Boxer for this reason alone. Supplements and Medications There are some canine calming supplements that have been shown to work to some degree. These will do very little on their own if other methods are not implemented. Calming collars with lavender have been found to be of some help, when used in conjunction with toys and other aides. In some cases of very severe separation anxiety in which nothing helps and the dog is suffering overwhelming stress, it may necessitate medication. Benzodiazepines and tricyclic antidepressants may help a Boxer that does not respond to the changes and methods listed above. Any good dog behaviorist will tell you this is pretty much a panic attack for dogs. In many cases, this starts long before the human actually puts the dog into the kennel or leaves the home. We call these triggers and identifying them is an important element to identify when treating a dog who suffers from Separation Anxiety. The I wonder if I will be lucky enough to review one of these amazing products. This then makes me start to get a little excited for Christmas; planning presents and seeing what toys are going to be on every Christmas list this year! This product actually unboxes itself! Make sure you pull the tag and WAIT. Kids love anything interactive and my eldest is also desperate for a pet. Not sure will work forever. My Mum is getting dog soon, so I hope this helps her forget her pet need for a bit and unboxing a new Present Pets Puppy should do as well! My 3 year almost 4 year old is pretty sensible, so she of course got involved, fully supervised. Batteries are included but you will need 6 x AAA when they run out! Have some spares. We received a Purple Glitter themed box! Your puppy from the Glitter themed box is so excited to meet you, she paws her way out of her own gift box! They are so cute with wide eyes and glittery ears and a gorgeous bow! The box will instantly start to shake as your sweet pup paws and kicks her way out! The front panel pops open to reveal Cocoa or Casey and she sings a cute unboxing song. Your Present Puppy is so excited and cuddly and loves to play. Her tails wags and she taps and shuffles her paws. She has over sounds and actions and imitates you! Unboxing Present Pets or letting it Unbox Itself! The girls were really excited one Saturday morning to unbox or as I said before, let the Present Pets unbox itself! My eldest was as usual stupidly excited and her hands always move at lightening speed, which you get from my photos! She was dying to see who she would get Casey or Cocoa. The first step is easy and involves removing the outer layer of cardboar. There is an easy pull to do this. You are then left with a purple box and are reading for the exciting unboxing. The puppy inside started going mad. It was barking, yapping and kicking like mad; starting to unbox itself. However my daughter made an error! She was so excited when the puppy was going crackers in the box, that she pulled open the front to reveal beautiful Cocoa! My eldest was not patient at all. You need to watch and wait. You see little paws disappear from the box, as it actually paws its way out. Do bear this is mind and explain to your kids, as I only noticed afterwards. But it is the main concept of the product!!! There are instructions; we just got a bit carried away. She then revealed Cocoa! She was kicking and yapping load and is so cute!! The girls immediately wanted to get her out and start playing. She is quite a noisy Pup! It is quite easy to switch her off by turning her over and the switch to do so is on her foot! This will of course, save the battery. She does go quiet though, if you leave her for a while. I was stumped as usual but my hubby figured you move the purple bones to let her out and yes you can see it on the instructions above! I need to learn to read. You can see the purple bones below. The girls proceeded to have a fight over who was playing with Cocoa but we had a look at in the instructions to see what she could do. She has a Cuddle Mode by pressing the top of her head. After a while of cuddling she does get sleepy and fall asleep and both girls were the most excited to do this for a while and snuggle her. Your Present Pets Puppy also has a Excited Mode by ticking her tummy and she does yap and kick and get excited! There is also an Instant Trick by pressing her bark button on her back and then patting the head. We did have problems doing this however and need to have a few more tries. I always struggle a bit with the more complex bits! However, I have been informed if you press the button and pat away quickly on the head it does work. The pup may miaow or something funny! However, we still struggled to do this. If you speak or bark at your puppy, she will imitate you! This is really fun and the girls enjoyed chatting and barking at Cocoa. The below photo cracks me up as my eldest got Cocoa in Games Mode. To do this you hold down the bark button on the back for a couple of seconds and you hear a chime. There are 2 games; the first the puppy starts barking and you have to copy the number of barks. You get a happy sound if you do and a sad sound if you fail! This starts as a short rhythm and gets longer! If you can do it, you win and get a happy chime! You can skip to game 2 by short pressing the back button and get out completely by a second short press. The games worked really well and I had a laugh watching the girls. It was pure joy and this will makes kids so happy on Christmas Day. Toys have been about unboxing for years but no one has thought about a toy that unboxes itself before! Cocoa has gorgeous big blue eyes and is fluffy and just adorable. The girls fell in love with her immediately. I found this with some of the Hatchimals but Present Pets are easy to work and great for kids. The recommended age range is perfect. Always a plus for me. You would think as an experienced toy reviewer I would have and my daughter would have calmed down but nope! Do the process slowly to get the best unboxing experience. However, I do think the instructions are a little unclear. However, this is a bit of a con, as would your child be able to do it? Once the outer layer is lifted away a small Instructions pack drops out and it is recommended that you read these first to know what to do next. The second step is to pull on the gift tag. This is impossible to miss as it is clearly marked with the word PULL! As the tag is pulled away from the Present Pets box, it triggers the automatic unboxing process. You can then sit back and watch in awe as your Present Pet unboxes from the packaging to reveal which puppy is hidden inside! Step 3 — Watch as your Present Pet Unboxing Begins As soon as the tag is removed your Present Pets toy puppy springs to life and you can hear the audible barks and yelps from inside the box as well as movements that physically move the box from side to side. .The Present Pet puppy then starts to poke and prod at the cardboard packaging, poking away 3 perforated paw prints to create holes in the box and reveal a little glimpse of what your puppy looks like! The most impressive part of the Present Pets unboxing is when not only do the paw prints get poked away by the Present Pet but the sides of the box start to be ripped away too, before the two sides split apart completely and drop open on their own to reveal the interactive Present Pet puppy sitting happily inside. The Present Pet puppy plays a happy little song as the final unboxing moments take place. First Impressions of our Present Pet Once the Present Pets box had burst open, the girls first set their sights on Cocoa, our adorable pup sitting inside. She has a large fabric shimmery ombre bow attached to her right ear, sparkly blue expressive eyes with a heart shaped patch of fur over her right eye and a cheeky sticking out tongue. She is wearing a removable collar with her name on and has super soft plush fur. After her unboxing, the Present Pet puppy is barking and already making lots of fun interactive sounds, but before play, she needs to be removed from her fixed point on the base of the box. The Present Pets pup is held in place on the base of the box by two small bone fastenings at her feet, which need to be twisted to move them into the unlock position, after which your Pup can be pulled away. What do the Present Pets do once open? The Present Pets instructions are pretty overwhelming, and I have to be honest, I really wish that toy manufacturers would use nice bright colour leaflets with good pictures or photos to make life a little bit easier for us parents! Instead, the instructions for Present Pets are quite a daunting black and white photocopy which obviously comes in lots of different languages. Despite there being a quick start guide with illustrations, it still felt a bit tricky to understand some of the elements of the interactive play. After lots of trial and error however, we have now successfully got to grips with all the play modes — there are a number of interactive options for playing with your present pet which create different modes of play. Cuddle Mode The first mode is Cuddle Mode. Erin loved pulling Cocoa in for a cuddle and tapping the back of her head. After some extended play, we found the Cocoa responds best when her head is patted firmly in a stroke like action rather than a pat or tap. To trigger excited mode you simply tickle, touch or tap the Present Pets pup on her tummy. Here she lets out of happy little yelps, licks, laughter and excited barks as her legs flick rapidly backwards and forwards, just like a child does when they are tickled! To trigger the trick mode, you need to press on the back button and tap the head. When you bark or speak to the puppy, it will respond to you and imitate you in barks. After 3 exchanges of listening and responding, the puppy will return back to standard play autonomous mode. She made some lovely little sounds when Erin spoke to her, and you can see examples on our video above. The important thing to note here is that some of the sounds are confirming whether you got it right, and are NOT part of the sound for you to copy — this caused a bit of confusion with us at first. There are two rounds in game mode and if you want to skip to Round 2 you can quickly press the back button again. Otherwise just wait and listen out for the first barks to begin. If you get it wrong bark too little or too many times, he will make a frustrated grrrr noise. There are 3 stages to round 1 and each time your child has to copy back a particular number of barks. My video footage shows this a bit clearer, so please do check this out if you want to see it in action. The puppy will start by barking a short rhythm and waiting for you to copy it by barking back the same rhythm. Again, there are 3 stages and they progress in difficulty. After a short initial rhythm the puppy then barks a medium length rhythm and waits for you to copy again. Finally the puppy barks a long rhythm and if you are able to copy it correctly the game is won! As with Round one, he makes a happy sound if you get it right, a growl if you get it wrong, and a happy dance when you complete the round. You can quit the Game mode by pressing the back button again. I will be honest, at times it did feel like they were both girls and our Present Pet were just making lots of noise and I am not sure how quickly the novelty of game mode would wear off, but both my girls were happy regardless! Present Pets toys can make over sounds and actions — we have had ours almost a week now and are still discovering new reactions. Present Pets Volume Control — Parents will be pleased to know that Present Pets do come with an off button thank you toy gods! There is however only one volume setting and no present pets volume control as such. In my opinion it is a touch on the loud side, particularly if your children are early risers! Present Pets toys require 6 AAA batteries batteries are included and these can be changed by unscrewing the paw prints on her feet 3 batteries in each paw. Our Overall Present Pets Review What we loved about the Present Pets toys: Present Pets toys have a really fun unboxing process — the Present Pet Pups really DO unbox themselves by poking and prodding their way out of the cardboard, and need absolutely NO assistance from children other than pulling the tag to trigger and start off the process. The rest is cardboard. This is a real positive, as the majority of the packaging can easily be recycled. The girls Neve in particular have played with her lots since. For parents who may need to keep things quiet when working from home or may get bored of the barking — there is the welcome addition of an off button!! How could Present Pets toys be improved? As is often the case, some of the instructions for Present Pets are a little overwhelming and I wish there was just a simple colour sheet which outlined each mode and what it did. There is a quick start guide in the instruction leaflet but even the sight of all that text is enough to put any parent off, particularly when you have an excited child raring to go! I assume more videos including mine will emerge to make it easier for you guys so hopefully that will help! Neve however, who is just under the recommended age at 4, did find this more of a difficult task. A few people have asked me since my review was published whether Present Pets toys only come in the puppy variety. At the moment, yes there are only four different puppies available, but it may be that future waves of Present Pets feature other animals like Cats and Rabbits — that would be pretty cool too!

Many people are afraid of the English bulldogs because of their somewhat aggressive appearance, but they are the friendliest of all breeds. They are lovers and not fighters. Bulldogs make wonderful apartment pets and are mainly low-endurance dogs. But all dogs can have the bad habit of biting. An un-socialized adult English bulldog will also nip and bite. Under these circumstances, you should keep your English bulldog away from other dogs and people. Your puppy might grow up thinking that there is nothing wrong in biting and nipping humans. As their teeth grow and their weight also increases, the harmless biting which you once found cute can turn into rough bites and play. An English bulldog is not aggressive by nature but like other dogs can show aggression if provoked. They are ferociously protective of their owners and others in the family. If they feel their owner or loved ones are threatened, they can turn defensive and show signs of belligerence. English bulldogs are calm and gentle with their owners but are chary of other dogs and strangers. Therefore, it is imperative to socialize your bulldog properly and make them feel safe around other dogs and people. There are chances that if your English bulldog is inadequately socialized, he will react fiercely to what he sees to be a threat to your safety or their own. Your puppy bites because he does not know how to play with humans and needs to be trained to stop biting. You can hire a dog trainer to do that or can do it by yourself. Bulldog Teething and Biting When your English bulldog puppy is 3 to 6 months old, there are chances that your puppy may be teething. At this time your puppy will put virtually everything in his mouth. They do this because they need something to chew on, to alleviate the pain and discomfort. You can give him ice cubes to numb his gums and mitigate the pain. When your puppy is teething, you can also give him things he can chew on. You can give him old washed rags kept in the freezer, hard rubber balls, or nylon bones. When your puppy bites you hard just yell as loudly as you can and pretend to be hurt. This will startle your puppy and ensure that he releases pressure. You must continue this until your puppy starts refraining from nipping and biting. This way your puppy will learn that biting can be a hazard to their friends and humans. They will learn that skin is sensitive and should be only pressed down lightly. Eventually your puppy will become gentler to you during their playtime. When your puppy bites you stop playing with him. Avoid petting, talking and even looking at your puppy. Never show aggression or give physical punishment to the puppy while training him. He will become defensive and grow up to be more aggressive. Remember to praise your puppy for good behavior. Socialize your English bulldog puppy to be more comfortable around strangers also. Socializing will help stop your puppy biting your feet and the feet of visitors. You can walk your puppy to dog parks and public places. You can also visit your family and friends with your English bulldog puppy to help him develop trust with them. Be aware that excessive lemon juice will cause an upset stomach and possibly diarrhea for dogs, so find something else with a bitter taste that is safe for dogs to teach them a negative consequence for biting. The bite force of the English bulldog is pounds per square inch psi. Psi shows us how much pressure is exerted on one square inch of space. This is enough to cut muscles and break bones. English bulldogs have extremely strong jaws and muscular and sturdy bodies. English bulldogs also have a very low center of gravity and can easily take you down. They were bred specially to fight the bulls. Their powerful jaws can cause a lot of damage. With appropriate training and by acting properly around your puppy, you can help him grow out of his habit of biting. Training your adult English bulldog will take some time. Training an adult English bulldog will be relatively difficult, but it is not impossible. So, be patient and try to build up this new behavior with trust and love. Remember, bulldogs aim to please you and will bask in your praises and affection so these are good motivators for your desired behavior. You can use the ignore method or praise method. You can also provide him with toys he can chew on to divert his biting behavior. When your puppy responds appropriately to your commands, always praise and offer treats to encourage the behavior. These command-specific trainings may take more time and consistency, so while they are useful, you may find a quicker, more in-the-moment technique to work best in the early stages of puppy biting. Use the Replacement Technique The replacement technique is precisely what it sounds like: replace what your puppy is biting. Biting toys is okay, but biting fingers and toes is not. If your puppy is chewing on your fingers and you want them to stop, replace your hand with a toy in their mouth. Your puppy is teething, much like a human baby does. Gnawing on things can help relieve the discomfort as their teeth grow, fall out, and are eventually replaced with their adult set. Replacing your hand with an appropriate chew toy will allow the puppy to continue their necessary soothing behavior on a better target. Withdraw from the Situation Puppies are avid learners; they grow fast, and they also learn quickly. If your puppy is playing with you and lands a bite, you should yelp. Your yelps should be: High-pitched Loud Immediately during the bite Yelp, and then remove yourself from the situation. Stand, or turn away from the puppy. If they continue to try to bite, leave the room for 30 seconds to a minute. Repeat this as often as necessary- which can feel almost constant in the early stages- but they will get it! If you yelp and your puppy immediately stops biting, offer praise to them. The immediate break in the environment will give them time to calm down and come out of an over-excited play mode. Your puppy will quickly correlate their actions with a negative response from you. This is how they learn in nature and is how they will learn best as a pet.
