when to stop feeding golden retriever puppy food

At the age of four, he cooks a live kitten in an oven. Hearing the poor animal meow as it dies is heartbreaking. Said individual's probably the most twisted of the pilots, and deliberately causes massive death and property damage during his battle to give his father opportunities to rebuild. Kon is aghast at the state of the Tachikawas' cats and rushes to groom six months of unbrushed hair off of all of them, clean their bowls, and feed them. The Tachikawas never actually wanted the cats, but in their grandfather's will, he insists that the cats be taken care of. As a result, the Tachikawas don't actually know how to care for them or even their names, showing that the sorry state the cats are in at the beginning of the story is more out of ignorance than malicious neglect. Shows up in more than one Doraemon film. Right in the first movie, Doraemon: Nobita's Dinosaur , the Dinosaur Hunters are poachers working for a futuristic billionaire, who hunts and kills stray dinosaurs for sport with a lingering scene in their boss' mansion hideout - filled with taxidermized dinosaurs and gigantic skeletons. They even have an arena to watch dinosaurs maul each other to death, for no reason other than to drive in how evil they are. Elfen Lied : Tomoo, the orphanage bully who teased Lucy for her horns went as far as to take the puppy she had been taking care of and beat it to death. Shocking considering they're supposed to be seven years old. It doesn't end well for the kids. Jagi, a preteen boy and one of the aforementioned Ryuuken's kids, attempts to kill the puppy in response by stomping it, but the puppy is saved by Jagi's step-brother, Kenshiro, who takes Jagi's stomp in order to protect it before bringing it back to Yuria. Jagi grew up to be a psychotic murderer, while Kenshiro grew up to be The Hero who ended Jagi's life. Shou Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist experiments on animals to create his chimera. That is fine as many alchemists and scientists do experiments on animals. However, part of why he's so atrocious is because his experiments involved combining humans with animals. When he made his second talking chimera, he used his young daughter and their pet dog. Both were Mercy Killed by Scar a few hours later. His first talking chimera used his wife. However, things really come to a head when she walks in on her grandmother drowning puppies in their bathtub as a sacrifice to protect the family by pacifying Oyashiro. Shortly after, her mom apparently kills the grandmother because she's becoming a menace and destroying their peaceful life in the city. This is later subverted when it's revealed Natsumi is an Unreliable Narrator who murdered her grandmother and parents. Natsumi's grandmother did drown puppies but it's a morally dubious case of superstition rather than outright villainy. JoJo's Bizarre Adventure uses this trope very frequently. Hirohiko Araki is a dog lover himself and uses a villain harming an animal as easy shorthand to show that they're past the Moral Event Horizon. In Part 1 , Dio literally kicks a dog Danny, Jonathan's pet Great Dane as soon as he arrives at the hero's home, and later burns it alive. After that point, animals, and especially dogs, usually suffer cruel fates to the current villain of the series. A century later, DIO demonstrates his Time Stop to the audience by brutally dismembering a cat and putting the pieces in people's food while planning how to kill Joseph. A notable exception, and a prime example of Contrasting Sequel Antagonist , is the villain Kars in Part 2. He goes out of his way to protect living things that aren't human, as in one scene where he cuts off the arms of a driver to prevent them from running over a dog. This trait goes out the window when Kars gains The Power of Creation as part of ascending to the Ultimate Life Form, which he first tests by making a double of a squirrel that messily devours the original. Lots of examples from Part 3 : Rubber Soul, having caught Jotaro in a cable car, takes his time using his Stand Yellow Temperance to crush and devour a pet dog in front of its owners including a child! Mannish Boy uses his Stand, Death 13 , to kill a dog in Polnareff's dream. Later, the dog is found dead in the same way, first hinting at the Stand's ability to kill people in their dreams. Even other animals can use this to show their villainy. Case in point: Pet Shop, a bird villain , has its Establishing Character Moment when it pulls a pair of dogs under a gate, decapitates them, and starts to eat them. Although he'd already crossed the Moral Event Horizon at that point by killing Avdol, Vanilla Ice further demonstrates his vileness by brutally kicking Iggy to death. One of the first things we see the Starter Villain Anjuro "Angelo" Katagiri do is bite off a pug dog's face. All because the owner wasn't cleaning up after it. Subverted with Tonio Trussardi. Josuke, sneaking into his kitchen after he suspects something is up with him, sees him feeding one of his meals to a small dog, then grinning like a loon when the dog's intestines explode out and screaming at Josuke when he catches him. Only it turns out the dog's perfectly fine; Tonio's Stand Pearl Jam has the power to cure any ailment, albeit in a visceral manner , and the dog was just suffering from a bad case of diarrhea. He only got mad at Josuke for entering the kitchen without washing his hands. Yoshikage Kira, the eventual Big Bad , made his 'debut' in the past by brutally murdering Reimi Sugimoto and her dog Arnold, the latter by slashing his throat and hanging him on the clothes dryer. Formaggio from Part 5 is introduced trying to pet an angry cat. Eventually, he gets annoyed and stuffs it into a glass bottle by using his Stand, Little Feet, which can shrink things. In Part 6 , Lang Rangler throws live rats at Jolyne while fighting her. When they go splat against her cloud suit's helmet, her vision is obscured by the blood. King Hamdo, the psychotic ruler of Hellywood from Now and Then, Here and There , is introduced in the middle of an emotional outburst when a cat interrupts him. Guess what happens to the cat. Go on, guess. Boa Hancock of One Piece has a habit of literally Kicking The Dog or a cat or a baby seal whenever she comes across them. She starts as a villain that Luffy opposes, but then becomes infatuated with him after showing his kindness; she still kicks little critters around, though, as she's still a big-name pirate. He isn't exactly a villain but is by far Ash's most antagonistic rival. Eventually, he does see his errors by the end , with the Chimchar he abused defeating him in the Sinnoh League as a fully evolved Infernape. Charmander's original trainer Damian was an abusive boy who told him that he'd come back for him, even when he had no intention of doing so. He didn't even care that Charmander would have died due to his Undying Loyalty causing him to stay on the rock even in a storm. In the Black and White series, we have Pignite's former trainer Shamus. He abuses his Pokemon and is pointed out as being bad. In Psycho-Pass 2, the season finale reveals that Tougane was groomed as a child by his mother to be criminally asymptomatic, and one of the first things we see him do in his childhood is murder a puppy. In Revolutionary Girl Utena , Nanami ended up drowning her brother Touga's kitten because he was giving it more attention than her. Though not evil per se, she's definitely an antagonist of the Alpha Bitch variety for much of the show and clearly has a number of mental issues mostly involving her brother that don't really get addressed until late in the story. Her track record with animals in the present of the show is implied to be Laser-Guided Karma for this incident, as well as a curse put on her by Anthy , a well-known animal lover and frequent victim of Nanami's abuse. In the first episode of Sailor Moon , a group of nasty kids were shown viciously beating Luna the Cat and forcibly putting a band-aid on her head. Fortunately for Luna, she is rescued by Usagi , who removes the band-aid that covered Luna's "crescent spot" on her head. This reveals Luna as a magical cat. Satou Kashi no Dangan wa Uchinukenai : The troubled though not outright antagonistic Mokuzu ends up killing all her school's rabbits, beheading one of them, and stuffing its head in her school bag. Mokuzu's dad beat their dog, to the point where he killed him. This serves as foreshadowing to Mokuzu's own death. Spy X Family : Keith Kepler, leader of the nationalistic university student terrorists , plans to release dogs with bombs strapped to them during the middle of a peace summit, and set off the explosives to kill the visiting foreign minister, and other dignitatries, with the hope of restarting the war so that his country can reign supreme. To show how the deep end he is, Keith's even shown kicking a dog inside on his gang's safehouse just for the hell of it. In Tokyo Ghoul , Juuzou Suzuya is ostracised by his fellows in the CCG partly because mutilated corpses of small animals, mostly cats, turned up on the CCG Academy grounds while he was a student there. Suzuya had a horrifically abusive upbringing that left him almost unable to have empathy for other living things, and he is certainly violent and creepy. But he was framed. The real culprits were one of the staff, a psychopathic torturer, and another unstable student who was suffering psychotic breaks and disassociation. Suzuya displayed a lack of reaction when found with the bodies which made him ideal to blame instead, and it wasn't investigated very closely out of fear the organisation's reputation would suffer. In a flashback of Your Lie in April , Kousei's abusive mom abandoned their pet cat after it scratched him on the hand. Kousei was being harshly trained to be a pianist to abusive degrees and his mother didn't want anything to happen to his hands. In the first stage, an antisocial boy named Tom Nero tortures a dog for his own amusement. In the second stage, now an adult, he savagely beats his own coach horse out of frustration until he puts out its eye. In the third stage, he graduates to robbery and the seduction and murder of a servant girl. The fourth stage displays his "reward" for his crimes: execution and, to add insult to injury, dissection. Comic Books AD : Judge Dredd : When Judge Death recounts how he began his long career of evil in his Origins Episode , the first obvious clue that he was an Enfant Terrible are his early sadistic tendencies of torturing the family dog and shooting at birds. Zombo : Played for laughs in a throwaway gag, when one of President of the Earth Donald Trump's assistants mentions that his boss once shredded a puppy. In Afterlife with Archie , when she was ten, Cheryl's puppy choked on her leash. It's later implied their relationship is at least somewhat forced by Jason. Evil Jimmy Olsen kills Superman, who has been turned into a dog, by crushing him underneath a fire hydrant. The Joker is simply annoyed because he doesn't know how to make something as pointless as beating a dumb animal funny. Jimmy Olsen is then beaten to death by two giant robots who appear out of nowhere. At least one take on Mister Freeze's origins had him, as a child , trying to "preserve" his pets by locking them in the freezer though it could be argued that he wasn't trying to be cruel so much as very, very out of touch with reality. The Penguin is often shown eating fish whole sometimes they're still alive as he eats them , as a nod to his namesake. He also wears fur coats, since he's a Rich Bitch. In the comic Joker's Asylum , a young Penguin goes insane and kills his birds just because one bit him. Also, in the film Batman Returns , he holds his sword-umbrella to Catwoman's pet cat, and he killed his parents' cat as a baby. The villain of the Ace the Bathound story "Hounded" in Batman: Urban Legends runs a pet cemetery and animal shelter which is actually a training camp for supervillain pets, and also performs unnecessary experiments on the animals For the Evulz. When he's being given a humanitarian award , he has a speech saying that when you see how people treat animals, you know how they'd like to treat other people. The amorality of one villain was shown when he chastises his Dumb Muscle over a mistake, picking up the goon's kitten as he goes on. By the time he leaves the room, the cat's neck was broken as punishment for the goon's failure. Calexit : Jamil's first on-screen customer was a soldier that recounts how his sister's ex spitefully poisoned their hummingbird feeder and had to watch the birds die. Calico : The villains that Calico targets are people who have hurt animals in some way. Issue 1 has him kill a rich family who shot a lioness on a hunting trip, and Issue 2 has him decapitate a man who clubbed baby seals. The Darkness : Appolonia Franchetti snaps her pet cat's neck in front of Jackie just to prove a point about how she will never let anything get in her way. The worst thing is that she did it right after saying she raised him since he was a kitten and he was very precious to her and she will miss him when he is gone. Spectacularly subverted by Marvel Comics' Doctor Doom , who lost a match against Squirrel Girl and her battalion of squirrels because Doom refuses to be cruel to small, cute critters. In Sin City : Family Values, a mafia hitman recounts how he "lit up" a diner with twin Uzis, killing everybody inside, then stopped just to shoot a stray dog before making his getaway. This proved to be his fatal mistake, as the collateral damage from this event shooting a prostitute in a phone booth next to the dog brought the wrath of Old Town onto his entire organization. Superman : In The Leper from Krypton , Lex Luthor puts an indeterminate number of rabbits and cats through a terrible death to test his newly created virus, and later to fool world governments into paying for a fake cure. And he is smiling gleefully every time. The Super-Revenge of Lex Luthor : Lex permanently damages a rabbit's brain to test his skills at psychological manipulation. Ultimate X-Men : It's revealed in issue 99 that Sabretooth abused animals as a child, always a bad sign of things to come. Surtr in Valhalla is one of the most evil and cruel Jotunns, and has abused Fenrir, making him turn from a lovable Big Friendly Dog who just hates to be chained to an evil, rampaging beast. Wonder Woman : As part of cementing that the Stalker with a Crush Diana nabbed while he was following his victim is a dangerous threat to the woman he "loves" he'd previously killed the woman's pets for getting engaged to another man even though she'd never been in a relationship with him and had a restraining order against him. Comic Strips Dick Tracy : Not only was Miss Egghead an aficionado of Beastly Bloodsports — running a stable of gamecocks — but she also strangled a young girl's pet rooster in front of her. Footrot Flats : Unlike his father and brother, who restrict their bullying to those who can theoretically fight back, Fat Bastard 'Hunk' Murphy likes to indulge in such petty acts of cruelty as pulling the wings off butterflies. Fairy Tales The King Of The Golden River : When explaining why Schwartz and Hans, "the Black Brothers", are two nasty pieces of work, the narrator talks about them killing innocent animals before everything else abusing and underpaying servants, hoarding corn and then selling it for twice its value.Besides what they did to those once-little critters that subsequently led to them becoming so monstrously sadistic , the author commented that said Precursors probably enjoyed taking electric prods to whatever animal equated to puppies in their home. In the Recursive Fanfiction one-shot Finding You Genocide , the Titan Camazotz and his minions massacre numerous wild animals and drop their remains from the sky on Monster X like a visceral rain for no other reason than to intimidate Monster X. Eventually the Darkrai turned on him and attacked him so ferociously that he was forced to release it, but it continued to haunt him and inflict terrifying nightmares on him every new moon. Four years later, the Darkrai was still stalking its old Trainer and forcing him to endure its nightmares, causing him to be reduced to a shadow of his former self. The Bolt Chronicles : The puppy mill owner in "The Seven" abandons his dogs and leaves them to starve. Mittens's adoptive family especially Jack, the head of the household in "The Survivor" is nightmarishly abusive to animals. His daughter Claire is depicted as neglectful losing interest in the pets she acquires rather than outright abusive. A Boy, a Girl and a Dog: The Leithian Script : Back when the world was young, the first Dark Lord Morgoth used to catch eagles and hawks and cut their wings off to figure out how to make his own flying creatures or machines. He gets his comeuppance when the Daycare woman gives him a special egg that hatches into a shiny Treecko, which kills him. As a kid, she'd pull the legs off of bugs and laugh at animal deaths. His History Revealed: A Dr. Robotnik Biography : It was an unintentional death, but a sign of Harold Robotnik's cruelty and Sanity Slippage is how he tried to power his engine using his son's puppy. It didn't work as expected and the puppy all-but exploded. The Pokemon fic " Meanwhile " written before Pokemon Journeys aired reveals that Pikachu was subjected to emotional abuse by his trainer before Ash; his first trainer was emotionally distant at first, then showed kindness when he learnt what was needed for the then-Pichu to evolve into Pikachu, and afterwards kept Pikachu trapped in his Poke Ball and made it clear he only ever saw Pikachu as a tool to win battles rather than a person. Pikachu observes to Meowth that this is the reason why he doesn't want to evolve into Raichu, as thinking about the sensation of evolving makes him remember the trainer who was so dismissive towards him before, and he never wants to feel that way again. The Rigel Black Chronicles : When she finds the first threatening message left by the mysterious assailant petrifying students, Harry is horrified to find the caretaker's cat and its six new kittens, dead and nailed to the wall to underscore how deadly serious the attacker is. Turning Point : According to Hector, the same healer who accused Lisa of witchcraft also liked to poison cats. Later on in the same chapter, Olive uses the Pudding-inator on the pigeons Polly Graph's, specifically that attack Odd Todd and turns them all to pudding out of sheer instinct, which proves to be the final nail in the coffin that makes her join the Todd Squad. In With Pearl and Ruby Glowing , Bill Cipher rips the teeth out of a deer and, since he's human here, doesn't magically put them back, instead letting it free to starve. Less gratuitously, Ratigan kills Toby when breaking into Basil's home, and Madame Medusa live-feeds Brutus and Nero arguably cruel to them as well as the prey, as prey fighting back have been known to injure pet carnivores severely. Deconstructed, however, with Sea Hawk; as a severely abused child, he kills animals to regain a feeling of power over his life, but everyone dismisses him as an Enfant Terrible. Films — Animation Cruella DeVil from Dalmatians is so driven to have a dalmatian fur coat to compliment her fur coat obsession that she orders her goons to break into a house and steal some and then kill them all in the quickest way possible "Any way you like — poison them, drown them, bash them in the head! In the Bambi movies, the enemy and antagonist is Man. They murder animals often enough that animals have to watch out for them whenever going out in the meadow, and hide whenever they're in the forest. Subverted in that Man isn't actually presented as evil, though animals consider them horrifying gods who can kill them easily with their weird long arms. Wanting to present Man as a neutral character is why Walt Disney never showed their faces. El Primero from Ferdinand is a famous bullfighter who is an entitled, arrogant and pompous character who only spares Ferdinand in the climax at the insistence of the crowd. Judge Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame likens the Romani population of Paris to vermin, and even crushes an ant colony with a tile to make a point about wanting to destroy them. He even has no qualms in hurting Esmeralda's pet goat Djali, as he got one of his soldiers to capture the goat and have him detained along with Esmeralda and the rest of the Romani people to be executed. Surprisingly enough, he is NEVER shown to mistreat his horse Snowball, even ordering his soldiers not to hurt it when Phoebus attempts to escape on its back. Conrad Cuppman in the Hugo movies. He wants to make Hugo a movie star against his will and pretty much destroys Hugo's home when capturing him. Leafie from Leafie, a Hen into the Wild was kept in a small cage all her life surrounded by other hens, only destined to produce eggs. She escapes at the beginning into the wild. Her owner is presented as an antagonist who later tried to clip her adopted duck son's wings. Ursula the sea witch from Disney's The Little Mermaid has no regard for the well-being of others. She devours one of four terrified brine shrimp whole and alive like a cashew; she squeezes an anemone until it bleeds to use its blood as lipstick; at least two of the ingredients for her mermaid-to-human potion are live creatures in bottles, staring horrified at their impending doom. In her Vanessa disguise, Ursula kicks a growling Max the sheepdog and tries to strangle Scuttle. However, she does care for her pet moray eels Flotsam and Jetsam ; even becoming extremely distressed when they're accidentally killed by the trident which led to her Roaring Rampage of Revenge , but this is likely Moral Myopia at work. In Open Season , Shaw tries to murder animals he has no business killing, including Boog, a circus bear. He also goes out of his way to kill Elliot. He also falsely believes animals are trying to take over the world. Nicodemus: We were captured, put in cages, and sent to a place called Nimh. There were many animals there, in cages. They were put through the most unspeakable tortures. In the Shaun the Sheep feature film , Trumper imprisons most of the animals that he finds in what is essentially a prison, where they get little food and are treated like vermin. This is all to make him feel like a hero when he's actually pathetic. Plenty of examples can be found in Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron , often rubbing shoulders with Humans Are Bastards. The stable master uses many bondage techniques in his effort to shoe and brand the titular stallion. Each failure dials up the cruelty a notch. The railroad men hitch more than one hundred horses to yokes to pull a huge locomotive to the top of a grade in winter, motivating them with crops and whips. The locomotive is too bulky to power itself up the slope, and even the horses struggle with the icy footing. J Sweetly Applecheeks maintains a facade of caring for animals in Tom and Jerry: The Movie , but he actually captures pampered pets and ransoms them back to their wealthy owners. His dingy basement is filled with cramped cages where he terrorizes the animals with a horsewhip. She's not particularly nice to Gromit either, trying to trap him in her house so he has to watch Wallace being blown up. Film — Live-Action American Psycho : After Patrick Bateman murders a homeless man in a dark alley, he immediately stomps his dog to death. A dog is stabbed in Andy Warhol's Bad. The killer in Angst narrates to the audience about how he tortured animals in his youth. Hilariously inverted in Austin Powers , as Dr. Evil outright kills several people on the account of upsetting his cat, Mr. Bigglesworth got upset because Dr. Evil got upset, which was because the assassins he hired failed to kill Austin Powers. Bravo the British channel had three idents that contained this trope. They consisted of one where we see rabbits on a farm roaming around, and then a grenade falls down and explodes them , one where a cat is locked up in a cage , and one ident where a goldfish is seen, then the camera zooms out to reveal that it's in a blender, leading to where the goldfish is blended off-screen. Brimstone : The first unambiguously cruel act the Reverend carries out on-screen is the wholesale slaughter of Elizabeth's livestock. A rather disturbing example is in a Deleted Scene in The Cat in the Hat : The main antagonist Larry Quinn, before going to negotiate with a television store owner, decides to hide Nevins in a TV set by tying him up with the TV's plug, forcing him to chew on it, and then forcefully throws him into the set. To make matters more unsettling, Nevins yelps after being thrown into the TV. Not even the fact that all of this is shown off-screen helps matters. In Circus of Horrors , Dr. This eventually comes back to bite him when he gets badly clawed. Downfall : Eva Braun admits that she kicks Hitler's beloved German Shepherd Blondi under the table just to get a reaction out of Hitler. In Eden Lake , teenage psychopath Brett and his gang are showing abusing a rabbit and a fox. In Equilibrium , as if we needed any more indication that the government of Libria was dictatorial and evil, it turns out that they have a policy of killing dogs and puppies for being "inducive of emotion". This is what finally drives John Preston, who has gone off the government-mandated drug Prozium, to turn fully against the regime. In the climax of Eyes of a Stranger , the first sign we have that something is wrong in Tracy's apartment is a dramatic Reveal Shot of her dog, strangled by the Serial Killer already inside with her. Being blind and deaf, Tracy remains unaware and continues her normal routine. The infamous "bunny boiler" scene from Fatal Attraction , which had Alex Forrest, a truly unhinged Yandere , killing and cooking the pet rabbit of Dan's daughter in the family's pressure cooker. This trope ended up leading to a sequence being dropped from The Fly .In between the scene that reveals Veronica is pregnant with Seth's child and her resultant Nightmare Sequence , there was originally a whole reel known informally as the "monkey-cat" sequence in which Seth, his Slow Transformation continuing apace, decides to use all three of his telepods to genetically splice together the surviving baboon and a cat. The resultant single creature violently attacks him, whereupon he beats it to death with a lead pipe. Because there is virtually no dialogue or obvious exposition via his computer to explain what his purpose in doing this is — instead it's revealed later as an attempt at finding the cure for his condition, one he tries to put through in the climax — the first test screening audience made the wrong assumptions about Seth and believed he was just being needlessly cruel to helpless beings. As a result, they no longer cared about his plight, which meant the rest of the film was a wash. Even though this meant losing an elaborate follow-up sequence that paid off the growth developing on his abdomen an insect leg emerging from it , the whole reel was cut so Seth could remain sympathetic. Godzilla vs. As vicious as Skullcrawlers are, what Apex are doing with them — breeding them in captivity and then throwing them at Mechagodzilla to be brutally killed by the Mecha in test runs — is something that Monarch would never even consider doing. It's also implied that they intend to at least make the attempt to cage, enslave, or kill any and all Kaiju that they can get their hands on. The Good Son : Henry shoots and kills a dog with a nail crossbow. Gothika : Discussed Trope when Dr. Miranda Grey explains her theory about the killer's accomplice's origins with the sheriff, which as a budding serial killer probably included torturing animals from a young age onwards. Then subverted when the sheriff reveals in a Wham Line that he never did enjoy it. Similar to Miss Gulch above, Mrs. Deagle of Gremlins jumps away from any possible sympathy from her very first scene and never looks back by swearing she will snatch Billy Peltzer's pet dog whenever Billy least expects it and she will toss it into her dryer in retaliation for it accidentally breaking a porcelain snowman of hers Billy even offers to pay it back right then and there but she insists she won't accept anything less than the dog's life as payback. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. He also gladly kills them himself once they outlive their use. Some of his more dangerous experiments are also kept under lock and key until his explicit command. Many of them aren't even violent, they're just bred by him to be used as The Brute even when they don't want to be. Halloween : Michael Myers kills both dogs he comes across. He's also implied to have eaten one. In The House That Jack Built , a scene from the titular Serial Killer 's childhood is shown, where he remorselessly cuts the legs of a duckling with pair of pliers, just to establish that he was always a thoroughly horrible person. Ice Cream Man : While he is more genuinely insane than truly malicious, Gregory kills his neighbor's dog and puts it through a wood chipper. One of the first indicators of Christopher's evil in Island of Death is when he rapes a goat and then slashes the poor beast's throat , leaving it to bleed to death. John Wick : What motivates John for most of the movie is the fact that Iosef Tarasov and his gang killed his new dog Daisy, which was the last gift of his dead wife, as they were beating him to shit and stealing his car. And the reason they killed the dog was that Iosef was annoyed that she was barking at them. In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom , the Big Bad Elijah Mills wants to sell the dinosaurs to the highest bidders, many of whom are callous, uncaring criminals, just to satisfy his own hunger for monetary riches. In The Killing Kind , Terry's first act of psychopathy after returning home is to strangle his mother's cat Penny to prevent it from meowing and giving him away while he is spying on Lori through her bedroom window. Little Shop of Horrors : As part of his musical number, Dr. Orin Scrivello, D. Long Weekend : In addition to their unwarranted killing of the dugong albeit due to mistaking it for something more dangerous like a shark , Peter and Marcia run over a kangaroo without a second thought, while Peter fires willy-nilly shots at ducklings and other creatures. In Man in the Attic , Slade literally kicks Harley's dog, which has been lovingly following him around ever since he joined the household, to drive it away from while he burns his bloodstained Ulster. From this point on, the dog goes from being slavishly devoted to him to being afraid of him. Mars Attacks! In particular, they seem to absolutely despise birds. They kill two birds during the film and also kill the president's dog. They also abduct a woman and her pet dog and swap their heads around for giggles. Finally, one of the classic Mars Attacks! The Night of a Thousand Cats : Hugo treats his feline henchmen like total crap, violently grabbing one and tossing him over the fence and attempting to drown another in his swimming pool. Horrifyingly, none of this appears to be simulated. Norbit : After being repeatedly disrespected and cheated on by his wife Rasputia, the final straw for Norbit is when she intentionally runs over the neighbor's dog for simply looking at her. Even though the dog is hospitalized and crippled, she just laments the fact that she didn't succeed in killing it. Platoon : While patrolling the village, Bunny shoots an innocent pig for no good reason. Ring of Fear : After rejoining the circus, O'Malley constantly torments the tiger that he blames along with Clyde Beatty for his downfall and humiliation; doing such things as shooting it with a slingshot. His cruelty to the big cat will come back to bite him in the end: quite literally. He jabs short twigs into its body to hinder its wings and make it "fly like a butterfly". When the out-of-control bird crashes into a tree and breaks its neck, his only comment is a callous "It was only a bird". Shoot to Kill : After taking a jeweler's wife and maid hostage to make him rob his own store, the killer brutally kills the family dog to show that he means business. Director Guy Ritchie included this scene after having a conversation with a Brazilian man who said that in his country, the worst kind of criminals are animal abusers namely, dogs. Additionally, Avi the Jewish gangster is willing to have a dog cut open to get a diamond out of its stomach, which horrifies his Psycho for Hire Bullet Tooth Tony. Ironically, in real life, Brick Top's actor Alan Ford is an animal rights activist. Spawn : Jason Wynn uses his pet scorpions' terrarium as an ashtray. He doesn't actually extinguish his cigar on any of the scorpions, but the implication is obvious. Starkweather : The first act of sociopathy the young Charles Starkweather commits—at the Dark man's urging—is to stomp a toad to death. Strays : Doug is a lazy, narcissistic Manchild who smokes all day, cheats on his girlfriend, only keeps poor Reggie out of spite, spends every day trying to get rid of him, and finally tries to kill him in the climax. The farmer in The Tale of the Bunny Picnic berates and insults the dog, refuses to feed him until he brings him a sack full of bunnies, and can't even be bothered to give him a name. He's the only truly villainous character in the special, and the only one who doesn't get a happy ending. Tales of Terror : In "The Black Cat", Montressor is not content with abusing his wife Annabelle, but also torments her pet cat, and would undoubtedly kill it if it ever stayed still long enough for him to get his hands on it. As might be guessed from the title, the cat provides him with his karmic comeuppance. Him graphically killing his victim's mother and young daughter both in a lengthy, drawn-out manner - the former suffocated by saran wrap while the latter gets force-fed a bottle of liquid detergent already established him as a sadist, but the film went the extra mile by having Wong grab the family's Pomeranian, shoving it into a washing machine, and leave with the spin cycle at maximum. Terminator 2: Judgment Day : In the extended cut, the T stabs John Connor's dog Max to death in cold blood after his barking clued John and the T in that the T was trying to trick them. Lang subjecting tigers to inhumane experiments and that he releases the poor creatures so they can attack the rubber manufacturers establishes him as a cruel individual. Lang's accomplice Henry and his assistant are introduced tormenting a tiger, invoking Frank's ire. The titular characters of Tragedy Girls dissolve a human corpse in industrial lye, and casually admit that they had to practice making it to get the formula right, and had to go through a lot of stray cats and dogs before they finally got it. To make matters worse, one of the girls goes home to her oblivious father.Troop Beverly Hills : During the girl scout troop Jamboree, Velda's Red Feathers troop cheats by misdirecting Phyllis's troop into a snake-infested swamp. After Annie drops some advice about which snakes are perfectly okay with water, they are scared out and in a stroke of luck, a skunk scares them again, causing them to take a shortcut and finish first, ahead of Velda's troop, allowing her rival troop to qualify for the final. In The Uncanny , Valentine cements his position as a villain when he drowns Scat's three kittens fortunately off-screen. The Wizard of Oz : Miss Gulch the Wicked Witch's Kansas counterpart is already a pretty bitter and vile harpy every second she's on-screen, but she cements herself as irredeemably evil by barging into the Gales' home with a court order so she can take Dorothy's beloved dog Toto to the pound to be killed and if it was up to her, she would do it by boiling the poor little thing in her oven. Turns out some random dog bit her earlier in the day and she couldn't care about finding out which dog it was — she already hates Toto, so she just went to the sheriff which she has some control over and told him that Toto did it so she could get rid of him. Literature Agnes Grey : A recurring theme in the novel. The first family Agnes acts as governess to just seem like run-of-the-mill Upper-Class Twits whose children are Spoiled Brats.Years later, she realizes the local rector at a small town she's living in is not a good man because he kicks her neighbor's cat and her dog , while she realizes the pastor Mr. Weston is a truly good man because he pets those same animals instead of kicking them. In the American Girl series, Felicity falls in love with a horse that she names "Penny". Penny's owner is a mean old man named Jiggy Nye, who mistreats her. He's also a leather tanner , and not well respected in Williamsburg because of his cruelty to both man and beast. Animal Farm : One of the reasons the animals rebelled was because Mr. Jones had been treating them worse and worse as he got older. The final straw came on a day when he straight-up forgot to give them food. In the Arcia Chronicles , whether a person of Royal Blood gets along with the cats living in the Imperial Palace of Munt is a surefire indicator of whether he will be The Good King or a bad one. Justified in that the "cats" are actually cat-shaped guardian spirits of the palace and being accepted by them is an ancient rite of passage for future kings that the humans have long forgotten. Charles and Alexander Tagere get along with the "cats" right away, Philip Tagere has more trouble with them, while both Pierres Lumen can't stand them mutually , which perfectly mirrors the scale of how virtuous they are presented by the narration. Brother teaches her self-defense which he advises her to use only as a last resort. Sister catches Tuffy throwing stones at a baby bird, an event that is captured in italicized text in the book. Sister calls Tuffy out on it, and the subsequent fight ends with Sister punching Tuffy in the nose. Glanton immediately tests it out by shooting nearby livestock and a cat, then proceeds to haggle over the price like nothing happened. It's ultimately Zig-Zagged , since soon after this Glanton adopts a dog that he seemingly cares for more than other people, but it's implied that only because it was something he could control that belonged to him rather than out of any sort of compassion. The Big Bad Judge Holden buys two puppies from a young boy simply so he could throw them off the bridge into the river below. One of his Psycho for Hire associates shoots them as they're drowning, and it's unclear whether this was a Mercy Kill or done out of malice. The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness : In the prehistoric world, it's an everyday activity to hunt for food, but the prey is respected through proper homages to set their souls to rest and by using what's not eaten in toolmaking. There are also reserves in hunting predators. The main villains, the Soul Eaters, violate these rites by hunting down predators, killing them for certain body parts to be used in their spells, and leaving the rest to rot. In addition to that, the Crippled Wanderer begins the first book's plot by trapping a demon in a bear's body, and by the time of the last book, Eostra has corrupted a pack of dogs as her bloodthirsty minions. Thiazzi in particular takes pleasure in torturing predators that are caught and unable to fight back. The Dark : An ethereal concentration of darkness rouses people to acts of acts of murderous sadism - targets of which include animals. In Discworld : Snuff Sir Sam Vimes, Commander of the Ankh-Morpork Watch, regales an inexperienced but eager village constable, Feeney, with how a man had once cut off his dog's back legs when it wouldn't heel. Lord Vetinari ordered the man's house searched by the Watch, and he was executed a week later for what they found in his cellar. Vimes: And bloody Vetinari got away with it again, because he was right: where there are little crimes, large crimes are not far behind. In Ender's Game , Ender's sadistic older brother Peter mutilates squirrels in the woods near the family home. This is something of a subversion though since even though Peter is clearly a sadist and Ender is more compassionate, by the end of the book Ender unwittingly commits genocide, while Peter selfishly brings about world peace. Tolkien 's The Fall of Gondolin , it is mentioned that Morgoth, the first Dark Lord, used to hunt, chain and torture eagles; and he then cut their wings off to figure out how to build flying gear for himself. Thorondor, the Lord of Eagles really hates him because of it. Timmi and Rebecca yell at the men to stop, but they just laugh until Grampy cuts them off in his boat. Later, Grampy tells the girls a story about the men chasing a deer in their car until it had a heart attack and died. In The Haunting of Drearcliff Grange School , supervillain-in-training Miss Steps demonstrates her sadism by pinning the protagonist between 'slabs' of telekinetic force, then boasting about how she's used this technique to squeeze live rabbits to death. Ward's father in Hurog , along with being violently abusive to his children and the castle slave, mistreats his warhorse to the point where it becomes dangerous and vicious. Eventually the horse gets revenge by bucking him off and killing him on a hunting trip. It was this deed, or more accurately the fact that he did it without it occurring to him until afterwards that it might be inappropriate or disturbing, that first caused him to realize that he wasn't like normal people. In the modern day, one of his self-imposed rules is that he will not interact with animals in any fashion unless absolutely necessary, to the point that he'll cross the street to avoid getting near someone's dog. Doctor Moreau in H. This was no casual, as Wells himself an animal rights activist wrote the book as a protest against the practice of vivisection that was still practiced though near to being outlawed in Britain at the time. Young sociopath Patrick Hockstetter in IT cemented his evil cred by murdering his own baby brother as a small child, and making a game of torturing animals by locking them in an abandoned fridge to slowly starve to death. His gruesome fate at IT's hands is terrifying , but not the least bit tragic. In real life, author Dennis Lehane is a well-known dog lover. In The Manchurian Candidate , Mrs. Iselin makes a passing remark in her narration about how she once nailed the paws of her cocker spaniel to the floor because he wouldn't obey a "heel" command. This was just one of multiple pieces of Troubling Unchildlike Behavior she displayed and an early sign of her Control Freak nature, and her older brother is specifically noted as having seen this and been disturbed by it. Misery : While she was in college, Annie poisoned a cat so she could use put its corpse on the stairs for her roommate to trip over. At the end when Perfect is reunited with the girl, they have a happy ending with Perfect flying above her. The titular Nova from S. Bryant's The Nova Chronicles , although a protagonist, cannot abide by insects or creatures on her ship or even in her way, often going out of her way just to trod on any animal she sees. Mack, the human running the circus-mall in The One and Only Ivan , isn't without sympathetic aspects and cares to some extent about the janitor and the janitor's daughter who've stuck with him so long. He just also absolutely doesn't care about the welfare of the animals he keeps. He bought Ivan, a baby gorilla, from poachers and raised him in his house like a child until he got too big and strong to be managed, then put Ivan alone in a small glass-walled enclosure in the mall for twenty-seven years. The poachers who killed Ivan's family are only discussed in the past tense and are simply monstrous. Instead of getting the older, injured elephant Stella medical care Mack bought a new baby elephant to try and attract more revenue, and threatened her with a "claw-stick" to get her to perform. In Mack's final scene in the book, he's lost the fight to keep his circus animals and any attraction they had to customers, and drunkenly doesn't comprehend that he'd ever done anything bad. The main characters from The Plague Dogs were experimented on at the beginning of the book, with one of them being repeatedly drowned and then resuscitated. The Animated Adaptation made it especially hard to watch Ratburger has Burt who makes rats into burgers and cockroaches into "ketchup" and Sheila who killed the protagonist's hamster. In Red Dragon , the Tooth Fairy killer's pattern involves killing a family's pet before killing the rest of the family. It's also mentioned that Hannibal Lecter had a record of childhood cruelty to animals. In Reflections of Eterna by the same author, one of the first things we see Richard Oakdell do is try to kill a rat with the local equivalent of the Bible for no reason other than it annoyed him. Word of God is that this either served as his Start of Darkness or was an early indication of his moral flaws that blossom in later books. George R. Martin 's short story Sandkings introduces its protagonist by showing what he does to look after his pets when he goes on a trip. The carrion hawk already feeds itself, so absolutely nothing; the shambler an undescribed alien animal is pushed outside to find food on its own; and for the piranhas, he chucks a giant hunk of meat in the tank and figures that if it runs out they can eat each other. He gets back later than planned to discover his piranhas all starved and the shambler ate the hawk, so irritated but not remorseful he goes to find new exotic pets to replace them. His competence as a pet owner doesn't improve from there and is responsible for almost everything that goes wrong. Secrets Not Meant to be Kept has Martha Plunkett and her staff at Treehouse, a preschool that is actually a toddler sex ring. Having previously assigned the kids rabbits to care for, to get them to go along with their molestation, Plunkett eventually kills the rabbits in front of the kids to terrorize them into keeping silent about the molestation. She notes that Mr Rucastle keeps a starved mastiff on his property which is only let out at night to savage potential intruders, that he is particularly proud of his son's skill for squashing cockroaches, and that the son has a penchant for trapping and torturing small birds and mammals. Holmes takes this as evidence of the Rucastles' malicious nature, noting that streaks of cruelty are commonly passed from parent to child. The Space Trilogy : In Perelandra , the Un-Man , when not tempting the Venusian Eve or irritating Ransom, will mangle as many critters as it can find and leave them to suffer and die. And Invoked by the Belbury faction in That Hideous Strength , which has its outer-circle minions vivisect animals to harden their hearts in preparation for visiting similar abuses on humans in the future. Throughout Stray , the stray cat Pufftail tells his grandson Kitchener why he doesn't trust humans and why he prefers to be alone. He's had many bad experiences with humans in the past: Pufftail's second owners only took him in because Pufftail, then called "Fluffie", and his brother Bootsie had belonged to the wife's elderly mother. Their owners had an Awful Wedded Life and often yelled at each other and their daughter a lot. Neither liked cats much, especially the husband. They would often forget to feed the cats all day and routinely neglected the brothers. After Bootsie killed their pet budgie, they began hitting and kicking their cats. When Fluffie and Bootsie's owners went on vacation, they left their adult daughter to take care of their cats. The daughter and her boyfriend forgot to come over for over a day. The daughter wasn't so bad, but her boyfriend was. While drunk, he and a friend decided to get rid of Fluffie and Bootsie. They stuffed the cats into bags and threw them out of a moving vehicle. Lucky finds this behavior to be torture and compares them to sharpclaws. The Fierce Dogs killed a fox kit named "Cub Fire". When his family found out they decided to get revenge, but mistook the Wild Pack for killing their cub. According to Arrow, the men at the "Dog-Garden" where the Dobermann's come from rigorously trained the dogs. They'd strike the dogs even pups if they didn't perform correctly. Lucky was a happy Leashed Dog pup until he was adopted by an abusive, alcoholic owner. Lucky ran away from that home and has been turned off from humans ever since. Just the thought of wearing a collar upsets him. Tortall Universe : In Mastiff, Beka Cooper finds the best scent hound in the city in the hands of a cruel trainer, and she is underfed and constantly whipped to make her obey faster. In the novelization of Return of the Jedi , Moff Jerjerrod of the greatest Imperial battle-station ever mostly-built, gets a few pages of characterization near the end.Live-Action TV Better Call Saul : Gus Fring tells a comatose Hector a story about how, growing up poor, he snared a coati that was eating the fruit from a tree he cultivated, and despite it having a broken leg that would have made killing it more merciful, kept it alive just so that it would suffer more as revenge for taking his stuff , which is exactly the same thing he's doing to Hector right now. For the record, this is a coati. He swaggers into Kim and Jimmy's apartment, gun on display, and affecting his trademark terrifyingly cheery demeanour. As if all this doesn't tell us how evil he is, he taps on the side of their goldfish's tank — and then after Jimmy pleads with him "You shouldn't do that, it upsets the fish" he defiantly does it again. Blackadder : Played for Black Comedy , naturally. The eponymous Witch Hunter in "Witchsmeller Pursuivant" is shown to be a horrible human being before he even appears, as the villagers admit he made them burn an old lady and her cat. Later, when Edmund mentions the old lady to him, he proudly adds, "Oh yes. And her pussycat. In "Private Plane," it transpires that General Melchett shot George's pet rabbit after allowing a dog to savage him, at George's 6th birthday party. His hostages Walter and Jesse are horrified. Referenced in Brooklyn Nine-Nine , where one piece of evidence that the first Oolong Slayer suspect is a psycho is his past arrest for torturing an animal. Jake is disappointed that it was just a squirrel, but Holt points out that it still counts. When they find the real Slayer, Jake is ecstatic that he abused dogs. Buffy the Vampire Slayer : Angelus once nailed a puppy to a girl's door before committing some unspecified atrocity. Buffy even makes a point of telling him that she doesn't have any pets so he better skip that part in his campaign to terrorize her. He also kills Willow's fish. What's even worse is that he drags her body to the kitchen, turns on the oven, and makes it leak gas into the house which not only frames the murder as a suicide but leaves the poor bird to succumb and perish from the fumes. The cockatoo's death doesn't go unnoticed by Columbo either and serves as one of the clues debunking the suicide set-up. We don't see it too much in Criminal Minds — the killers tend to focus on human victims — but they frequently quote the "homicidal triad," three behaviors that can be an indicator of psychopathy: bedwetting, setting fires, and cruelty to animals. Of characters who actually do harm animals in-series, we have: a teen boy who feared he would become a psychopath and admitted to killing a bird when he was younger "Sex, Birth, Death" , a young boy who killed his brother and admitted off-screen to Prentiss that he'd formerly killed the family puppy "A Shade of Gray" , Ashley Seavers's serial killer father who drowned a puppy she brought home as a child "What Happens At Home" , another teen boy who practiced his technique on dogs before moving on to women "The Apprenticeship" , and a man who treated his victims as birds and killed birds in front of them as part of the torture "Nelson's Sparrow". Robby calls her out saying that this is animal cruelty, and even Baby Sinclair, who is incredibly selfish, gives them some of his food when he sees them begging. Ramsay immediately finds out just how loyal to their master starved dogs truly are. Yellowjackets : Averted in the flashbacks to the time when the team is stranded in the wilderness. Plenty of animals get killed, but it's out of necessity for food or self-defense and their deaths are not crueler than necessary. Played straight in other examples. In Far Cry 4 it's not uncommon to find caged tigers or other predatory animals in Royal Army camps and to see soldiers poking at them. Done constantly in Mother 3. Most of the enemies you encounter in-game are "chimeras", wild animals who have experimented with to either fuse them together or partially roboticize them. Then there's a segment in which you actually play as a monkey who is facing Electric Torture at the hands of his master. In Octopath Traveler II , Harvey and Petrichor are eventually revealed to be behind the current state of Ochette's final boss, who is whichever animal companion she didn't choose to care for at the start of her story. It's been tortured and experimented on for the past ten years, and Harvey in particular really got into it. Fittingly, they're two of the worst villains in the game, aiding the world-destroying cult out of either extreme jealousy or.In Persona 5 , one of your Mementos targets, who you find out by working at a convenience store, has hurt and killed many cats. Morgana, who's in the form of a cat , is especially insistent that you steal his heart. There's also Ghetsis, the secret leader of Team Plasma. Frustration is a move that grows more powerful the more the Pokemon dislikes its trainer. Do the math. The whole point of the original Sonic the Hedgehog games is to save little forest animals who have been stuffed inside robots by Dr. Eggman, the usual Big Bad. In Tyranny , the psychopathic Verse mentions practicing her knife work on the animals at her family's farm before joining the Scarlet Chorus for further opportunities to maim, torture, and brutalize people under the banner of Kyros. Whiplash : The whole plot of the game is freeing animals from the cruel people of Genron, who perform heinous experiments on animals. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus shows that in BJ's childhood, his father Rip forced him to shoot his beloved pet dog as punishment for befriending an African-American girl and if you intentionally miss the shot during the segment, Rip kills the dog himself. Years later, the true depths of Rip's wickedness come to light when BJ learns that he sold out his mother, a Jewish Pole, to the Nazis. In Yakuza , at one point, the player is shown a group of thugs who are laughing while throwing rocks at a stray puppy. The series being what it is, One-Man Army Kiryu happens to be nearby while this is going on. Cue thrashing. The same thing would happen again in the "Another Haruka" substory in Yakuza 5 which even he lampshades as looking all too familiar and having the same result: mooks being beat down on the street. In Yandere Simulator , Ayano would willingly kill her pet if she found out her Senpai was allergic to them. As established in the video "Yandere-chan's Childhood", she killed a cat just to try to experience an emotion for the first time. It didn't work. Visual Novels In Spirit Hunter: NG , Kubitarou is quickly established as a nasty spirit due to its modus operandi being the murder and decapitation of people's pets. Super Danganronpa Another 2 : The killer of Chapter 3, Kanade Otonokoji, admits to butchering their own dog as a child out of murderous jealousy that her twin sister, Hibiki, preferred to play with it over her. This is just the first of a long, long list of crimes that cement them as one of the most despicable characters in the entire Danganronpa franchise, canon or otherwise. She decides to poison his water with weed killer to get rid of him. McBusters : When the fast food monsters start causing trouble after Walter Peck shuts off the McBusters' deep-frier in the first video, one part has a man's dog sniff a bush full of burger monsters and the burgers start slaughtering the dog off-screen as the owner watches in horror while getting covered in his pet's blood. Murder Drones : In " Heartbeat ", Doll spots a robotic cockroach crawling onto a picture of her parents' killer. She immediately makes the cockroach violently blow up, and she licks its visceral remains off her face with a Slasher Smile. On The Edge : The first chapter starring Jiro Kurebayashi has him apply for work at a pet store, which he finds out is a puppy mill. He and his coworker tried to talk to the owner about it, but he was an authoritarian asshole who beat up anyone who crossed him. Things escalated when the chihuahua under Jiro's care died and the owner told him to burn or throw it on the river, which lead him to beat the bastard to a pulp. He then threatens to beat up the boy's pony. These can include human food, plants and material items, and even dead animals. Yes, very gross — but common. At UrgentVet, we regularly hear from concerned pet owners whose dog or cat has decided to dine on something—or someone—that is past expiration. Why are dogs and cats attracted to dead animals? While humans find the smell of death and decay downright repulsive and nauseating, our pets are attracted to and delighted by this putrid perfume. The impressive canine and feline sense of smell can detect odor and decay from a great distance, making anticipating or interrupting the impending funky feast a challenge for owners. Theories why dogs and cats are drawn to death include an instinctual desire to claim the spoils as their territory, or to camouflage their own scent and improve hunting success—although these are most often performed by rolling on or near the odor source. Can eating a dead animal make my pet sick? Dead animals and birds can pose many risks to pets. Many pets show no ill effects—other than temporarily losing our friendship and respect because of their gross food choices—but others may require hospitalized treatment. Common health hazards include: Secondary poisoning — If the dead animal has consumed a poison e. In addition, animals themselves can be poisonous or venomous — examples include: Bufo toads, certain insects, and even some fish. Toxins — Birds and small mammal carcasses may carry clostridium botulinum i. Bacterial infection — Some wild animals can be hosts for leptospirosis , salmonella, and other harmful bacteria. Parasites — Wildlife commonly carry intestinal parasites, including roundworms and coccidia, as well as external parasites, such as fleas. Consuming a host animal can lead to parasitic infection in or on your pet. Gastrointestinal distress — Mild irritation such as gastritis or constipation is the most benign—but still unpleasant—outcome. If signs persist longer than 24 to 48 hours, contact your veterinarian. While owners often worry about rabies, the likelihood of this virus transmission is extremely rare, unless your pet was bitten during a fight with the deceased animal. What should I do after my pet eats a dead animal? If your pet has eaten any portion of a deceased animal, contact your regular veterinarian. Do not attempt to induce vomiting without their approval. Provide the veterinary team with as much information as possible, so they can accurately assess the situation, and determine any potential risks. Important details include: When the event occurred. L Leptospirosis Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that infects both humans and a wide range of animals. It occurs worldwide but is more common in temperate and tropical areas of the world. Some people infected with leptospirosis will have no symptoms at all, and some people will become severely ill. Some wild and domestic animals, such as cattle, pigs, dogs, raccoons, and rodents, carry the bacteria and pass them in their urine. People become ill following direct contact with urine or tissues from infected animals, or exposure to contaminated soil, food, or water. Canine Leptospirosis Listeriosis Listeriosis is a rare but serious disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes. It is usually acquired by eating or drinking foods contaminated with the bacteria. Unpasteurized cheese or other dairy products, hot dogs, and cold cuts are the foods most likely to transmit listeriosis. Infection in cattle and goats can cause them to abort. When this occurs, the placental remains are heavily contaminated and contact with these remains can spread the infection to people. Listeriosis is especially hazardous to pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems. Listeriosis Lyme Disease Lyme disease, a bacterial disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, is transmitted by the bites of infected ticks. Ticks become infected by feeding on infected rodents. It is the most common tick-borne disease in the United States, but is relatively rare in Washington when compared to other areas of the country. The classic symptom of Lyme disease is usually an expanding target-shaped or "bull's-eye" rash which starts at the site of the tick bite. Fever, headache, muscle aches and joint pain may also occur. If left untreated, later symptoms can include recurring joint pain, heart disease, and nervous system disorders. Animals such as dogs and horses can also develop Lyme disease. Ticks Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis The primary host of lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus is the common house mouse. Pet rodents can become infected after being in contact with wild house mice infesting pet stores or homes. People can develop lymphocytic choriomeningitis following exposure to rodent urine, droppings, saliva, or nesting material. Symptoms of illness may be similar to the flu, or may cause meningitis inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord. Direct skin-to-skin contact is the most common way MRSA is spread. People and pets can carry MRSA on their skin or in their nose and not show signs of illness. Transmission involving animals is rare compared with person-to-person. P Petting Zoos and Animal Exhibits Certain venues encourage or permit the public to be in contact with animals. These settings include county or state fairs, petting zoos, animal swap meets, pet stores, zoologic institutions, circuses, carnivals, educational farms, livestock-birthing exhibits, educational exhibits at schools and child-care facilities, and wildlife photo opportunities. Although human-animal contact has many benefits, infectious disease outbreaks and injuries have been associated with these settings. Following established rules and guidelines, such as hand washing after contact with animals, will help reduce infectious disease outbreaks associated with animals in public settings. Animal Venue Operator Requirements Plague Plague is a serious infection of humans caused by bacteria the bacteria, Yersinia pestis. The bacteria are present in wild rodents and their fleas. People are infected through the bite of an infected flea, through a cut or break in the skin while handling infected animals, or through respiratory droplets from and infected person or animal. Although wildlife in Washington occasionally test positive for plague, human plague infections are extremely rare in our state. The last case occurred in Yakima County in , and involved an animal trapper. Plague Psittacosis Parrot fever Psittacosis is a bacterial disease caused by Chlamydophila psittaci. People usually become infected after inhaling contaminated dust from feathers or bird droppings. Direct contact with infected birds and bites can also spread the disease. Psittacine birds such as cockatiels, parrots, and parakeets are common carriers of the bacteria, but many other types of birds can be infected. Some infected birds show no signs of disease but can shed the bacteria when stressed from illness, moving to a new home, nutritional deficiencies, or overcrowding. The same respiratory disease in birds is called avian chlamydiosis, ornithosis, or parrot fever. Q Q Fever Q fever is a bacterial disease caused by Coxiella burnetii and primarily affects cattle, sheep, and goats, although other livestock and pets can carry the bacteria. Most animals have no symptoms, but infection may cause abortion in sheep and goats. The bacteria can be shed in the birth products, urine, feces, and milk of infected animals. The disease in people ranges from no symptoms to severe or chronic illness. People can be infected through direct contact with or by inhaling barnyard dust contaminated with dried placental material, birth fluids, or urine and feces from infected animals, or ingesting unpasteurized dairy products made from infected animals. R Rabies Rabies is a severe viral disease that affects the central nervous system. All warm-blooded mammals, including people, can get rabies. Rabies is almost always fatal if treatment is not begun soon after exposure to the virus. Most people in our state are exposed to rabies by being bitten by a bat. Bats are the only known natural reservoir for rabies in Washington State. Elsewhere in the United States, rabies reservoirs include skunks, foxes, and raccoons. While human rabies is rare in the United States, it is a significant disease worldwide, causing 55, deaths a year - most of those coming from bites of infected dogs. In the United States, human rabies is controlled by vaccinating dogs and cats and by giving a series of shots to people after they've been exposed to a potentially rabid animal. Rabies Raccoon Roundworm Baylisascaris is an intestinal roundworm found in raccoons. People, and other animals, become infected when they accidentally ingest Baylisascaris eggs from soil, water, or objects that have been contaminated with raccoon feces. Once ingested, these eggs hatch into larvae in the intestine and travel throughout the body, affecting the organs and muscles. Children or developmentally disabled people are at a higher risk for infection when they spend time outdoors, because they are more likely to put contaminated fingers, soil, or objects into their mouths. People who work with raccoons or spend time in raccoon habitats are also at increased risk. Symptoms include abrupt fever, vomiting, headache, muscle, back, and joint pain, and then a rash on the hands and feet and swollen joints. Other animals such as mice, gerbils, squirrels, cats, and dogs can get infected and may or may not get sick with rat bite fever, but they can spread the bacteria. Rat bite fever is rare in the United States, but it's not a notifiable disease, so exact numbers of cases are unknown. People who handle rats as part of their work or live in homes infested with wild rats are at higher risk of getting this disease. People who have pet rats may also be at risk for infection. Many animals can get ringworm, including dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, rodents, rabbits, and birds. People are infected by direct contact with an infected animal or person - most infections are spread person-to-person. Ringworm on a person's head usually shows as a bald patch of scaly skin and elsewhere on the body it can cause a red, ring-shaped rash that may be itchy. Spores of the ringworm fungus can survive for a long time on carpet, furniture, or other surfaces, and cause infections. Ringworm Dermatophytosis Infection , CDC Roundworm Toxocariasis Toxocariasis, or roundworm infection, is caused by a parasite that is commonly found in the intestines of dogs and cats. Roundworm eggs, which can survive for long periods of time in the environment, are present in infected dog and cat feces. People can get roundworm infections through direct contact with contaminated feces or through ingesting roundworm eggs. Children are more likely to become infected since they play in areas where the ground may be fecally contaminated by dogs and cats. Although most people with roundworm infection have no symptoms, sometimes the roundworm larvae can move through the body and damage body tissue, such as the eye. Toxocariasis, CDC Rules and Guidelines Regulations and guidelines to help prevent diseases from being transferred from animals to people. Rabies vaccination requirement for pet owners, animal vendor or venue operator responsibilities, disease reporting requirements and more. S Salmonellosis Salmonellosis is a bacterial infection. The bacteria are shed in the feces of infected people and animals. Most infections happen when a person eats or drinks food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Contact with animals or objects that animals touch have also led to salmonellosis. Animals that often carry Salmonella include livestock and poultry chicks, ducklings , reptiles turtles, snakes, lizards , amphibians frogs, salamanders, toads , rodents, and even fish in aquariums. Salmonella can cause serious disease, especially in young children, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems.

The boxador dog is a crossbreed developed by mixing a purebred boxer and a purebred Labrador retriever. Although both parent breeds are officially recognized by the AKC, the boxer Lab mix has the status of a designer breed. Boxadors have several different names and are also known as laboxers, boxerlabs, and boxerdors. While some boxerlabs take more after one parent than the other, others are a perfect blend of both parent breeds. Generally speaking, most inherit a boxer-like frame but are sizably built like their Labrador retriever parents. Although their appearance is unpredictable, there are a few traits you can expect to see when it comes to size, coat, and color. Size Being a cross between a Labrador retriever and a boxer, boxerlabs tend to be medium to large size dogs. Most are between 23 and 25 inches high at the shoulder and can weigh anywhere from 50 to pounds when fully grown. And males tend to be larger than females. Color The Labrador retriever comes in three colors — yellow, chocolate , and black. On the other hand, the boxer also comes in three different colors — white, fawn, and brindle. Keeping this in mind, it comes as no surprise that the Lab boxer mix can come in many different coat colors. The most commonly seen colors in this mix are brown, black, brindle, and white. Coat While a Lab has a short, double water-resistant coat, the boxer is a short-haired breed with a smooth and silky single coat. Most laboxers inherit the short, silky, and smooth coat of their boxer parents; however, some can have a denser coat of a Labrador. Since your boxerlab will inherit character traits from both its parent breeds, you should meet both the Lab and the boxer parents. Since both boxers and Labrador retrievers are friendly, playful, loving, and devoted companions, chances are that their mix will be too. Although boxer Labs can act as either of their parent breeds, they are generally extremely playful and energetic. Depending on how much your mix takes after its boxer parent, they might act goofy and cheerful most of the time. Boxerlabs form strong bonds with their people and do best in large families that have the time and energy to interact and play with them several times during the day. People-oriented and loving, this mix craves companionship and tends to develop separation anxiety when left alone a lot. If they are forced to stay home alone while you are at work, boxerlabs can easily become bored and destructive. Activity Level As an offspring of two very energetic working breeds, the laboxer is a very active dog with high exercise needs. Being such an active and athletic dog, your mix will need at least 30 minutes of exercise every day in addition to two walks. Activities such as running, hiking, swimming, or agility are all great ways to keep your pooch exercised and in excellent shape. Since boxerlabs love to play, games such as fetch, flyball, Frisbee, hide and seek, and tug-of-war are ideal ways to interact with your pooch and keep them entertained and exercised at the same time. Having a securely fenced backyard can be a big bonus when owning this mix. This way, you can keep your laboxer exercised and in great shape without leaving the comforts of your home. This mix craves companionship and is happiest when involved in all family activities. But, besides love and affection, you should also pay attention to: Exercise As mentioned previously, the lab boxer mix needs at least 30 minutes of vigorous activity every day. In addition to two regular daily walks, you should take your dog for a run, hike, or swim to burn excess energy and stay in good shape. Fun-loving, playful, and goofy, this mix loves games and will enjoy having a variety of interactive dog toys that will stimulate their curious mind. Games such as fetch or hide and seek are also a form of exercise that will also keep your pooch entertained and mentally stimulated. Intellectual Stimulation In addition to being highly energetic, laboxers are also intelligent dogs that can easily become bored without mental stimulation. If left to their own devices without interactive toys, your mix will chew and rifle through your belongings just to have some fun. And when you are at home, interact and play with your pooch as much as you can to stave off boredom and encourage good behavior. Companionship True to their parent breeds, boxadors are outgoing, people-loving, and easy-going dogs that form strong bonds with their owners and families. Bred to be loving companions, laboxers are delighted when they are involved in all family activities and are best suited for large families. This mix craves affection and company and can easily develop separation anxiety and other behavioral problems if left at home alone a lot. Ideally, a boxador dog should live in a large family where they will have company at all times. Grooming Most boxerlabs have short glossy coats that are easy to keep clean and are a fairly low-maintenance breed when it comes to grooming. Brushing your pooch once or twice a week is enough to remove loose hair and dander and keep their coat clean. In addition to regular brushing, you will also need to bathe your dog once every two months or as needed. Diet An ideal diet for a Lab boxer mix should be formulated for medium to large-sized breeds with high energy. Make sure the food you are feeding to your pooch is rich in protein and reinforced with all essential vitamins and minerals. Like their Labrador retriever parents, this mix has a tendency to gain weight easily and can become obese in no time. To prevent weight gain and all health problems associated with it, feed your dog two times a day and stick to a regular feeding schedule. Known Health Problems The boxerlab is considered a healthy breed, but they are predisposed to some of the same health problems that boxers and Labrador retrievers face. The most common health issues seen in this designer breed are: Hip and elbow dysplasia: Both boxers and Labrador retrievers are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, so boxerlabs can develop it too. Allergies: Like people, dogs can develop food or environmental allergies. Itching is the most common symptom associated with allergies. However, some dogs also exhibit respiratory problems and might cough, sneeze, wheeze, or have a runny discharge from their eyes or nose. Hypothyroidism: This is a relatively common endocrine problem in dogs caused by an underactive thyroid gland. Dogs suffering from hypothyroidism usually experience symptoms of lethargy, weight gain, and changes to the skin and coat. Life Expectancy The Labrador boxer mix has an average lifespan of 12 to 15 years. But, when cared for properly and taken to regular veterinary check ups, this mix can live longer. Highly intelligent and eager to please, most laboxers are fairly easy to house train, and learn basic obedience. Boxerlabs, like all other dogs, react the best to positive reinforcement training techniques and reward-based training. The idea behind this approach is to reward good behavior using treats or praise and to ignore bad behavior. This type of training has been proven to give the best results and is highly effective even if you are dealing with an extremely willful dog. Besides training, laboxers can also benefit from early socialization and should be exposed to many different people, situations, sounds, and sights from a young age. Early socialization can help your laboxer puppy get used to other people and pets and grow into a friendly and well-rounded dog. Who Should Own A Boxador? Bred to be a loyal and devoted companion, the Lab boxer mix is best suited for active people and families with children. This friendly mix craves companionship and is best suited for large homes and families who can spend time and play with their dog every day. Buying A Boxer Lab Mix Puppy Spend some time researching reputable Lab boxer mix breeders before you decide to welcome a laboxer puppy into your home. Since this is a fairly new designer breed, be prepared to spend more time researching and tracking down a reputable breeder. Once you locate a breeder you like, schedule an appointment to meet the puppies and the mother and to inspect the facilities they are kept in. If by any chance the breeder refuses to show you the conditions the puppies are kept in, walk away and look for another breeder. A reputable breeder will be more than happy to answer all of your questions and will also be able to provide health certificates for both parents and all puppies. However, you may end up paying more, depending on the breeder, your location, lineage, and gender. Although they might seem intimidating, boxers are goofy and mischievous canines that make great family companions. Highly energetic, easy to groom, and loving, the boxer is a great choice if you are looking for a loyal family pet that can also double as a guard dog. Easy to train, friendly, gentle, and affectionate, Labs make great family pets and companions to people of all ages including children. If you are active and have enough time to interact and play with your dog every day, the Lab boxer mix will be a great pet. Are Boxer Labs aggressive? Therefore, early socialization is a must if you want your mix to grow into a friendly and well-behaved dog. Your vet can help you develop a care routine. Boxadors love to eat and will rapidly gain weight if they are allowed to free feed. Pick a high quality dog food and stick to a feeding schedule; two feedings per day could be ideal to keep this pooch happy. They also need an exercise schedule. A 30 minute hike, walk, or game of fetch, plus an hour of active running around a yard will help burn off pent up energy. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. Keeping them clean and dry is the best way to avoid doctor visits. If your dog develops a pungent aroma or is scratching their ears excessively, they may have an ear infection and will require a vet exam. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth a minimum of three times a week. Clean your dogs eyes as you would your own. You can use a cloth or your fingers to wipe away discharge or debris that collects in the corners. Boxador Feeding An ideal Boxador diet should be formulated for an active, medium- to large-sized breed. Limit their amount of treats, as well. The main colors of Boxadors are; black, brown, brindle, and white. Rarely solid, their coats typically have a blend of two or more colors. Luckily, their coats are very easy to groom. A good brushing per week will probably do. They may self groom and are considered a pretty clean dog. Always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any tail pulling or biting on the part of either party. No dog should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Learn more about this pup by reading about their parent breeds, the Boxer and Labrador Retriever. Boxador Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed specific rescue for Boxadors because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Boxer or Labrador Retriever breed specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. The boxador is an active dog who's affectionate and loyal to her entire family. As a mix of two highly intelligent breeds , she has earned a reputation for being easy to train and eager to join any family adventure. But she also comes from two high-energy breeds and needs to be kept busy. As a hybrid dog , the boxador can vary in size depending on which parent breed she takes after the most. She will likely stand about 2 feet tall and weigh between 50—80 pounds. At her best, every inch of the boxador is filled with exuberance and love. She will need an active owner who can match her endless stamina, and she will be happiest when kept close to her people. Appearance The boxador is perpetually ready to play. Her toned, muscular body is frequently in motion, often chasing a ball or trying to start a friendly game of tug-of-war. Even if she has the longer snout of the Labrador retriever, she will likely still have droopy jowls. Because of this, she might be prone to drooling —especially when she gets excited. Both of her parent breeds are large dogs , so your boxador will grow up into a big bundle of energy. The boxador is expressive with her eyes and ears, often looking at you with a longing glance and perked up ears to tell you she's ready to go for a long walk. If she takes after her boxer side, her coat will be short and won't shed much. However, because a Labrador's coat can range from short to medium in length, a boxador will likely experience seasonal shedding. The boxador can come in a mix of colors, with the dominant shades being fawn, brown, black, or brindle. And while it's not guaranteed, the boxador often has a white patch on her chest and a muzzle of black fur. This means the mixed breed is ideal for many on-the-go families, as long as you make sure you have time to play with your boxador every day. Bored dogs are not good dogs because they're going to chew on belongings. They need families that are going to be active and keep them busy. She gets along incredibly well with children and other dogs, especially if she is well-socialized as a puppy. Boxadors are motivated by praise and affection, so owners should train her using positive reinforcement training and give her plenty of attention when she does something correctly. She will be highly motivated to learn different games alongside you. Both parent dogs are known for their intelligence and ability to communicate exactly what they need with their owners. So pay attention when your boxador is whining or nudging you—that probably means she needs to go outside or just wants some more playtime. You need to get them all kinds of games and activities. Take them on a jog or play fetch, all of that good stuff. She's not going to want to entertain herself in a fenced-in yard ; she wants you to play with her. While she is a well-tempered dog, the boxador should not be left at home for hours alone. If left by herself, the boxador can be prone to make her own entertainment think: chewing decorative pillows or pulling over houseplants to keep herself entertained. Loretta Moraco, a director at Chelsea's Hope Boxer Rescue that works with boxers and boxer mixes in the Northeast, says many people don't understand the energy level these dogs bring to a household. By training your boxador that her crate is a safe, comfortable space, she will feel more secure there whenever her owners do need to leave her alone for a short period of time. Crate training can also limit undesirable behavior that can happen when boxadors get bored. The boxer side is mischievous and curious, and you don't want them eating something they shouldn't when left alone. As a general rule, boxador owners should be prepared for a dog that wants to run and play 99 percent of the time. While there are some exceptions, boxador owners need to be ready to take their new pet on long, daily walks. She is exceptionally friendly thanks to her Labrador side, and she will thrive when socializing with other humans and dogs. They need doggy daycare and activities and games outside. They're literally like a toddler for a really long time, that's the best I can describe it. Keep them busy, and don't let them get bored. It's a good idea to get her used to regular teeth brushing as a puppy because her boxer side can be prone to dental issues. If she has face folds particularly around her mouth , you'll want to keep them clean with regular bathing in order to avoid any bacteria buildup. Health A healthy boxador can live between 10—12 years, but they are likely to experience health issues in their lifetime. Owners should consider investing in pet insurance if they bring home a boxador because both breeds are prone to certain health conditions that can become expensive in their older years. A boxador's health largely depends on what genetics she inherits from her parents and grandparents. The Labrador side often experiences elbow and hip dysplasia , according to the Labrador Retriever Club. These issues can be addressed with joint supplements recommended by your veterinarian. They can also experience certain heart disorders, as well as a condition called exercise-induced collapse. The boxer parent's genes can make boxadors predisposed to cancers that often impact the brain, thyroid, or spleen, according to the American Boxer Club. They can also be at risk for hereditary heart diseases , including arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy or Aortic Stenosis. They could experience discomfort with her hindquarters later in life if they inherit the boxer's predisposition to degenerative myelopathy. The popularity of boxer hybrids including the boxer-Lab mix in recent years has actually been, in part, an effort to mitigate some of the more heartbreaking health conditions that impact the purebred dogs. They are great with kids, smart, and goofy. And a lot of people who love the boxer breed are now looking for a hybrid dog because they are hoping it eliminates some of the health issues. While many boxadors live long and healthy lives, being aware of the potential health issues is the best way to ensure she is kept comfortable and happy. History As a hybrid dog, the boxador's origin is murky. Mixed breeds are not registered by the American Kennel Club, so their history is undocumented unlike purebred dogs whose history goes back for centuries. The most likely explanation for the boxador is that breeders sought to combine the best traits of the two beloved, active breeds. Especially for owners who worry about the health issues surrounding the boxer breed, the Labrador retriever—as the nation's most popular dog—makes an optimal pairing to offset some of the boxer's health risks. While the boxador's history is largely speculation, she comes from very famous parents. The Labrador retriever originated in Canada as a loyal waterfowl dog before gaining a reputation as a loving family dog. The boxer is the product of breeders in Germany and Belgium who wanted a strong hunting dog. Eventually, the boxer became a farming dog who enjoyed spending time with her family. Because the boxador can be prone to certain health issues, it's especially important that potential owners get health records for the dog they are adopting. If you are bringing home a puppy from a boxador breeder, take steps to avoid a puppy mill scam by working with individuals who are transparent about health screenings and allow you to meet the puppy on-site so you can ensure she was raised in a good home. Fun Facts While the boxer-Labrador retriever mix is most commonly referred to as a boxador, the dogs can also be called a boxerlab or Laboxer. In , the Labrador retriever was named the most popular dog breed for the 30th year in a row. The same year, the boxer was named the 14th most popular dog breed in the United States. A rescued boxador named Wesson is the frequent star on the popular TikTok account willandwesson. Was this page helpful? Looking for an exuberant best buddy? The Boxador — a cross between a boxer and Labrador retriever — is a marvelous mutt that has plenty to offer to his family members. What Is A Boxador? These canine companions are sure to love accompanying you on any adventure with a wagging tail following behind them. Most people love life with these enthusiastic and intelligent pups. The Beautiful, Bouncing Boxer These loyal, loving dogs are known for their playful personality and adorable looks. Boxers and most boxer mixes are athletic yet patient pups, who do well with all members of the family, big and small. In fact, boxers are some of the best dogs for babies in the world. Boxers want nothing more than to be around their family members and do well in active households where there is always something to keep them busy. Reaching about 65 to 80 pounds, these muscular pups need plenty of exercise on a daily basis. Boxers are also known for holding onto a puppy-like spirit well into adulthood. While this is undoubtedly charming, boxer owners must be ready to put in the work with training. These pups tend to drool and snore quite a bit, though they do not shed heavily. Despite their few shortcomings, these canine clowns are sure to make you laugh and leave a pawprint on your heart. These friendly, outgoing dogs are well-loved due to their people-pleasing attitudes and playful spirits. Labrador retrievers and Lab-mixes usually make amazing companions so long as they get the exercise and mental stimulation they need to keep their tails wagging. These sweet dogs love spending time with their family members and — like boxers — do well with kids and other pets. Labs are medium sized dogs weighing between 55 to 80 pounds. Luckily, these adaptable dogs are fairly intelligent and an easy-to-train dog breed , so long as they earn a treat or two for their efforts. Temperament: The energetic Boxador is always ready to play and enjoys spending as much time as he can with his family. These pooches are likely to act like permanent puppies and do well around kids as long as they are taught to understand hoe yo interact gently with little ones. The Boxador is a loyal, happy-go-lucky dog that is always ready for his next adventure. That being said, these dogs may need access to a coat throughout the colder months to keep themselves cozy while out on walks. The main coat colors of the Boxador are black, white, brindle, and brown. Occasionally, these pups have white markings along the snout and chest like their boxer parents. Intelligence: The Boxador is wickedly smart though you may not have guessed it based on his sometimes clown-like personality. With the right incentive, these dogs are sure to learn a whole range of tricks as they are eager to please their families. Training Challenges: Luckily, these pups should be fairly easy to train. That being said, these pups will shed and need a brush at least once a week. Your Boxador will love going on regular runs, hikes, or playing an engaging game of fetch or frisbee whenever he can. Ideally, Boxador homes have a large, fenced-in yard where these sweet pooches can get out some of their endless energy. Health: These pups are pretty healthy, especially for larger dogs, and they have an average canine lifespan of 12 to 15 years. However, they are susceptible to health conditions shared by both parent breeds including hip dysplasia, cataracts, and diabetes. Here is a quick checklist to ensure these are the perfect pups for your family. You have a lively household. These sporty sweethearts want nothing more than to spend as much time as they can with their family members. These smart pups love staying mentally and physically engaged, so regular training sessions are a must. These pups are happy to curl up on the couch and offer lots of hugs and kisses, so long as they meet their exercise needs. You have enough time to entertain these active pups. Do you have one of these silly sweethearts at home? Does he show more of his boxer or Labrador retriever side? Like it? Share it! The Boxer Lab mix is playful, energetic, loyal and loving. Boxador puppies are known for being intelligent and enthusiastic dogs. But their spirited temperament is not right for every family setup. Watch these cute Boxer Lab mix puppies playing! The boxer lab mix, also known as the Boxador, is a hybrid of the Boxer and the Labrador Retriever breeds. Compared to its parent breeds, the Boxador mix itself is very new. But, its parents have long histories living and working alongside humans. Labs originated as working dogs, retrieving game for fishermen in Newfoundland, Canada. When they were first bred in 19th century Germany, Boxers were used as fighting dogs. Boxer Lab Mix Characteristics With cross breeds it is often hard to predict which parent a puppy will resemble. Boxers can weigh up to 80lbs and reach 25 inches tall. Labradors are similarly large. Boxador full grown tend to be between 23 and 25 inches tall and weigh up to 80lbs. Although females are smaller than males. Regardless of the mix of your genes your pup ends up with, your Boxer Lab Mix dog is likely to be a medium to large dog, active, loyal, easy to train and very fond of challenges — of both the physical and mental kind! Boxers are fawn or brindle. Often with white patches. Their offspring can be any mixture of these! The Boxador is usually brindle, and these dogs often have white markings. If you want a black Lab Boxer mix, your puppy will likely still have some white on them. Your best bet is to mix a black Lab with a dark Boxer. But, even a black Lab Boxer mix can have unpredictable coloring, despite the dominant genes for black fur. Do Boxer Lab Mixes Shed? When it comes to coat, the Boxer Lab mix usually takes after its Boxer parent. These pups typically have short, smooth hair that sheds very little and is easy to care for. However if your Boxador dog has more Labrador in its genes you might have to deal with some shedding. Thankfully this is usually seasonal and can be kept in check with regular grooming. Are Boxadors Hypoallergenic? The Boxer Lab mix might have a short coat, but it is likely to be a high shedder at least part of the time. They produce allergens in their dander and saliva, and are not suitable for dog allergy suffering owners. Boxador Temperament The Boxer Lab mix will fall somewhere between its parents. But, luckily, the Labrador and Boxer breeds have quite similar temperaments. Both Boxers and Labradors are very loving and loyal. They think nothing of climbing on their people for a cuddle, despite their large size! Both Boxers and Labradors are usually great with older children. They are considered gentle giants and will eagerly run after little ones. Although they have been known to accidentally bowl over smaller family members in their excitement. Labradors also love playing with canine companions, but Boxers are less reliable in this area. Poorly socialized Boxers can be prone to aggression towards strangers and other dogs. Boxers are instinctive guardians and proud to play the role of family protector. But you can reduce this through thorough socialization during the puppy stages and by meeting the Boxer parent and ensuring that they seem happy and confident around strangers. Even the most friendly breed, like the Labrador, will benefit. Finding them puppy friends to play with will encourage them to be calm and docile with other dogs when fully grown. Attending puppy classes is a great way to do this. But, make sure you also socialize them to unfamiliar people, children, cats, other animals, and more. This will ensure your Boxador dog is as friendly outside the home as he is inside. They require a lot of exercise and enjoy running around with the family or playing a game of fetch. This can result in unwanted behaviors like barking, digging, or chewing. But, be wary of a shorter snout in the Boxador. Boxers suffer from a conformity issue called brachycephaly, which can cause trouble breathing and overheating when exercising. Use positive reward techniques for best results. You could even take your mix to a puppy training class, or attend an online dog training class. Boxador Health and Care Genetic diversity is improved in a cross breed compared with the parent breeds and the coefficient of inbreeding COI is much lower. Put simply, the COI of any mating describes how closely related the parent dogs are. Higher COIs are associated with an increase in health problems. The risk of this happening is lower if the puppies parents are not closely related. There are however, some health issues that are not recessive and can be passed on from just one parent. And there are common ancestors in some of our dog breeds that mean some diseases are present in both breeds. For that reason it is still possible that a cross bred dog could inherit genetic health problems. Labrador Health Labradors are not without their issues. This breed can suffer from hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. It can cause lameness and severe arthritic pain. Another issue to be aware of in Labs is eye disease. Retinal dysplasia was first noted in the breed in .Progressive Retinal Atrophy is a degenerative eye disease that is common in Labs. Only buy your puppy from a breeder who health tests the parents for all the potential problems their respective breeds could suffer from. Boxer Health A study found that Boxers are one of the most likely breeds to get cancer. According to Petplan, mast cell tumors are the 5th most common illness in Boxers. This breed is unfortunately also associated with heart disease. Aortic Stenosis is the most common major problem in the breed. The causes are not known but it is genetic and passed along certain bloodlines. ARVC affects males more than females and is most common in dogs older than .Symptoms include coughing, difficulty breathing and weight loss. Boxers can also suffer from Canine Degenerative Myelopathy. This is a neurodegenerative disease that can cause paralysis. Unfortunately more is not necessarily better and brachycephaly causes breathing difficulties and overheating It may be that being the Boxador rather than a purebred Boxer offers some protection against these diseases. It certainly reduces the skull shortening we see in brachycephalic breeds. This is a bit of a two edged coin because while the Boxer physique may benefit from a longer muzzle, the Labrador physique is unlikely to be improved with a shorter one. Reputable breeders will only breed from dogs that have been tested and cleared of these serious hereditary health problems. To give your pup a long and healthy life, make sure he gets plenty of exercise, a balanced diet and regular vet check-ups. Boxador Life Expectancy Labrador Retrievers have a lifespan of years. And, on average, Boxers live around years So in theory you can expect Boxer Labrador mix puppies to reach anywhere between 9 and 12 years old. In practice studies tend to find that crossbred dogs in general, live longer on average than most purebred dogs. But we currently have no evidence that this is the case for the Boxador in particular. Only you can decide if the Boxer Lab mix is the right fit for your home. These are large dogs with big hearts that will give as much as they take. Boxadors love being part of a family. They are great with children and enthusiastic playmates for families with school age children and up. But this cross breed needs lots of exercise. They are fiercely attached to their people and dislike being left for long periods of time. This is a dog that suits a family with an active lifestyle and lots of love to give. Boxer Lab Mix Rescue Adopting a shelter dog always comes with risk. But Boxadors in shelters need homes and rescuing puppies or older dogs can be very rewarding. Labrador and Boxer breed rescues also sometimes have crossbreeds available. Dogs from adoption centers are usually much cheaper than puppies. But, remember you may need to spend lots of time helping them work through behavioral issues from past experiences. Finding Your Boxador Puppy Never buy a dog from a puppy mill or pet store. Or from the back of a vehicle. Always visit the puppy in his own home in the presence of his mother, who should be relaxed, healthy and friendly. Sadly with any very fashionable breed, or breed mix, there are many out there who are just looking to make a quick buck. Socialize your Boxador very thoroughly, exposing him to all kinds of fun experiences and making sure that he meets many different types of people, places, machinery etc. Given Boxadors intelligent nature and working history, get started on training your dog right away. Boxador Breeders It can be challenging to find a responsible breeder of cross breeds as there is currently quite a stigma against mixed breeding in the dog world. You must ask to see those certificates — they are very important. The parent dogs must have been screened for any genetic diseases and the breeder should be very forthcoming with any questions.

The 6-year-old pooch is the star of a Fall Out Boy music video and is a New York Times best-selling author — along with his owner, Leslie Mosier, that is — and that only scratches the surface of his impressive resume. However, Mosier is quick to point out that Doug is also just a happy little pug. And, for her, that fact alone is a dream come true. Mosier, who lives in Tennessee, brought Doug home as a puppy in the summer of .In her job at a record label and artist management company, she was already in charge of managing the social media pages of several clients. While this taught her skills that would eventually help make Doug a star, it also left her with little interest in spending her free time on social media — at first, anyway. By July , though, she gave in to the lure of Instagram and created a personal account. Two things were abundantly clear: Doug was a natural in front of the camera, and his pictures were the most popular ones on her account. On my account at the time, it might get to 1, likes. In the fall of , one of her emails found its way into the inbox of Brian Koerber, a reporter for the digital content outlet Mashable. One look at her inbox makes it clear that their mission is being accomplished. Susan Segrest of New York City has one such story. They shot a short video of Doug with the balloon, and, to their surprise, that simple footage took the internet by storm — it now has 21 million views on Facebook. When pressed to name a career highlight, Mosier and Chianelli agree: Shakira. But his team always places his well-being first. Hitting creative roadblocks is her biggest challenge. And that means acting quickly, like in January, when a photo of an egg broke the world record for the most Instagram likes, previously held by Kylie Jenner. Mosier and Chianelli set up every shot using a plush pug toy in his place for lighting when needed before bringing in Doug, which keeps his part quick and fun. This year will also see the launch of The Doug the Pug Foundation, benefiting children with cancer. So, we just let her live her best cat life. And, yes — much of it was captured and shared on Instagram. Well, that is, if every Pug has 12 million social media followers, poses with celebrities on the reg and makes special appearances on TV shows and music videos. How did Doug go from housepet to social media sensation? I always wanted a Pug and, funny enough, I always wanted a pug named Doug. So, when I was in college in Nashville, it finally felt like the right time for me to get my first dog. I got Doug from a reputable breeder when he was 8 weeks old. I had always wanted a pug named Doug! I would come home after work and take photos of Doug. So, it was just a really fun hobby, and it turned into something really awesome. What was the video that originally went viral? It was a video of Doug running around a park with a pug balloon attached to his waist. After that video went viral, we started posting more videos of him doing spoofs of popular TV shows and movies. How did you get Doug so used to the camera? He took to the camera, literally, the second I brought him home for the first time. Whenever I took my phone or the camera out, he would look directly into the lens. And when I would bring out a shirt or an outfit for him to put on, he would be excited to put it on. So, he was definitely a natural. He turns on right when the camera is on, and he just knows what to do and what not to do. First and foremost, capturing their personality is really key. Just figure out what makes them unique and special, and work around that and what they like to do. Doug clearly enjoys an amazing life. Doug went to her house, and she was just really sweet. That was a really cool [experience]. Doug and his sister, Fiona, living their best lives. So, Doug spends his days napping and playing with his kitten sister, Fiona, hanging out in our backyard, just going to the park and doing things like a normal dog. Did Doug take to Fiona right away? Or was there a little bit of jealousy with him being the only child initially? His absolute favorite toy is his hedgehog toy. We have to travel with it [and] bring it everywhere. For treats, he eats grilled beef liver dehydrated dog treats. What would people be most surprised to know about Doug? When he poses next to it, he never tries to go in and take a bite? There are times when he definitely begs, but he knows to just sit and look at the camera. How has it been for Doug to be a part of the Facebook Watch show? Doug posing with his keychains. Dogs can finally join in on the Doug the Pug fun. Definitely just seeing how happy he makes people. With all the curly-tailed flair Doug brings to the internet, of course his pet care brand is a delight in equal measure. Nonipup helps pets live long and happy lives by equipping their owners with the resources and mindset to approach pet care holistically. Our all-natural, ethically developed, and sustainably sourced products celebrate our furry friends and turn mundane moments into precious memories. Nonipup is launching with four products. They are all formulated with all-natural and human-grade ingredients. The shampoo formula is truly the best we have ever tried on Doug. We get compliments all the time on how soft he is. The lavender shampoo is very soothing, and the lemongrass is incredible for protection against outdoor pests. We have used them on him for years, and we have never found anything that works the way that they do. The Calm Balm is an incredible salve that I even honestly use on myself! These salves work together in tandem, with one treating dry conditions and one treating wet. A post shared by Doug The Pug itsdougthepug What made you decide to launch a product line? Why was now the right time to do so? We had a big health scare with Doug the Pug a few years back. He developed something called immune-mediated thrombocytopenia. His immune system almost killed him because of the allergy medication he was on. Luckily, after stopping the medication and a lengthy stay in the ER, he was able to bounce back and no longer has the condition. This experience opened our eyes to the importance of giving him all-natural, non-toxic products for his day-to-day needs. It also led to us finding a health team for Doug: an herbalist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, you name it. We completely revamped his food, grooming, and supplement protocol to reflect a more fresh lifestyle. His coat became softer and shinier, he does not have much graying for his age, and best of all, he is happy and running around like a puppy. I also personally have a disease called endometriosis, which has forced me to re-examine the quality of products in our home. It turns out ingredients, like synthetic fragrances, are detrimental to not only my personal hormone health, but to our dogs, too. Doug has taught me a beautiful gift of going for our dreams, and this was a dream we had talked about for a while. Courtesy of nonipup Why did you want to get into grooming products specifically? Once we saw how well these formulas worked on our Dougie, we knew we had to share them with the world and give people a clean and trustworthy option. The exciting thing about Nonipup is that we have big plans to expand beyond grooming and develop Doug-approved and tested supplements. So, stay tuned! What is special about Nonipup as a Doug the Pug brand? Doug recently shared that he lost over five pounds, and the response from the dog community has been amazing. We all want the best for our dogs, but sometimes it can be hard to sift through all that is out there. We know that Doug The Pug is a trusted voice with a large platform, and we take immense pride in having Nonipup be a trustworthy brand that we can recommend. A post shared by Leslie Mosier lesliemosier Has Doug been part of the development process? All of these products have been tested on Doug for years and once we saw the magic of them, it gave us the confidence to start an entire new brand around it. What are you most excited about with this launch? I am truly excited about the salves getting into the hands of dog owners and seeing the before and after photos. I know others will feel the same when they get their hands on them! Plus, they smell so good.

Across the United States, the white golden retriever is becoming increasingly popular. As these goldens are becoming more common, more and more people have questions about them. Are English cream golden retrievers the same as American golden retrievers? What makes these white-coated dogs so unique? Continue reading to learn the truth about English cream golden retrievers! An all-white golden retriever is simply a golden retriever with a pale-colored coat. Unlike their more golden-toned cousins, these dogs have a cream or almost white coat color. The difference between the two dogs emerged over time. Golden retrievers were originally created by Scottish breeders in the 19th century. This dog breed was developed over the course of more than 50 years. Several different types of breeds were introduced into the mix over time to create the dog we know and love today. Eventually, the standard golden retriever breed was born. Today, we call these American golden retrievers and English cream golden retrievers. Truth be told, the white golden retriever is actually just a broad name given to English cream golden retrievers. This is because this variety tends to have lighter-colored coats—hence the white name. In fact, these dogs go by several different names, including platinum retriever, rare white European retriever, exquisite platinum imported golden retriever, or simply white retriever. If a breeder or anyone else claims differently, know that they are trying to scam you! English Cream Golden Retriever vs. American Golden Retriever As I touched on earlier, the white retriever is simply a different type of golden retriever. In general, they will have the same temperament and exercise requirements. They will both shed profusely and will need similar amounts of mental stimulation. However, there are still a few key differences that are worth noting here. The largest and most obvious one is appearance. Instead of having a yellow-toned coat color, the white retriever has, as you might imagine, a cream-toned white coat. There can be some shading variation within this category, but not very much. There are also some other physical differences. These include blockier, broader heads, bigger bones, and darker skin than traditional goldens. The white retriever variation has a more rounded eye shape, whereas traditional goldens have darker, more almond-shaped eyes. There is also a slight difference between the two in terms of size. The breed standard states that male English cream golden retrievers should be from 22 to 24 inches tall, while females are between 20 and 22 inches tall. On the other hand, the breed standard for traditional golden retrievers states that males should be 22 to 23 inches in height, while females are anywhere from .Another difference worth noting is that English cream golden retrievers have an average lifespan of 12 years. Traditional golden retrievers, on the other hand, have slightly shorter lifespans at around 10 to 11 years. This is definitely something worth considering if you have set your eyes on bringing a golden into your home. Having a vet fund on hand for your dog is essential in case of emergencies or sudden health issues. In terms of temperament, the dogs are roughly the same, though white golden retrievers have been noted to be somewhat more relaxed than American golden retrievers. You need to be sure to take your golden outside every day for exercise and enrichment—otherwise, you will have a mischievous and even destructive dog on your hands. If you are interested in a new companion, a white golden retriever dog is a great choice. These dogs are fun-loving, patient, and extremely loyal to their humans. In particular, we highly recommend goldens for families. These dogs love lots of attention and enjoy groups of people. They are also easy to train and are perfect for young children. On top of that, English cream golden retrievers adjust to any type of home, and they especially like being involved in all family activities. As long as they get enough exercise, your white golden will happily curl up on the couch next to you at the end of the day. An English cream golden retriever will also be a great companion for family movie nights, only asking for belly rubs from time to time during the film. This is in stark contrast to Labradors and some other types of retriever dogs that get bored easily and need a lot of mental stimulation. All types of retrievers, including English cream golden retrievers, are highly intelligent and easy to train. Known for their eager-to-please and obedient natures, goldens make great pets even for newbie dog parents who have no prior experience training a dog. They also are not the best guard dogs. Though goldens are loyal to their owners, they quickly befriend strangers and are more likely to greet an intruder with a wagging tail than a threatening bark! Life Span Did You Know? The English Cream Golden Retriever is not a separate dog breed from the Golden Retriever ; it is simply a rarer coat color variation. These Golden Retrievers tend to have light white or cream-colored coats instead of honey, golden-brown, or reddish coats. As they are still standard Golden Retrievers, they are recognized by the AKC and other canine organizations and can be registered. An English Cream Golden Retriever has all the same traits as any other Golden Retriever; they are one of the most popular dog breeds and tend to be open, friendly, and make great family pets. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. As long as they are socialized and trained, Goldens tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They are even known for being open and friendly with strangers. As one of the kid-friendly dog breeds , Golden Retrievers love attention. These dogs tend to be energetic, full of personality, and are devoted to their families. They also tend to be excitable, which means they can be prone to barking. Training your dog to stop barking early on can help curb this habit and help prevent it from becoming a nuisance. Due to their friendly, gentle nature and intelligence, Goldens can often be found working as service, therapy, or search and rescue dogs. English Cream Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. Their high energy and exuberance make them better suited for homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living, but you will need to dedicate a lot of time every day to ensure they get enough attention, mental stimulation, and exercise. Goldens fare well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat and extreme cold. Because they bond so closely with their families and are one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they do not like to spend long periods of time alone. Some potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Cream Golden Retriever can include canine cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, and elbow dysplasia. Good breeding practices reduce the risk of these health issues and make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. The national breed club recommends hip and elbow evaluations, an NCL DNA test, an ophthalmologist evaluation, and a cardiac exam at a minimum. English Cream Golden Retrievers are intelligent and eager to please. This makes them highly trainable dogs that are a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Not only are they one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners , but they also tend to excel at obedience competitions and other dog sports. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered basic commands , move on to other activities or more advanced commands. Anything you learn will help and will only strengthen the bond you are building with your puppy. Plus, there are several other benefits of puppy training classes including socialization. English Cream Goldens may have a lighter-colored coat, but they still have the classic longer Golden Retriever coat that will shed a big year-round and heavier as the seasons change. You will want to bathe them as needed and get your Golden professionally groomed a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Trimming nails once or twice a month keeps them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. Daily tooth brushing is ideal to keep tartar buildup at bay. This, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Golden Retrievers are known for being high-energy dogs. Like Labrador Retrievers , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They do tend to calm down a little as they grow into adulthood, but will still have a lot of energy. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep this dog happy and healthy. Goldens tend to be athletic and versatile dogs. So, once they are done growing and the vet has cleared them for higher-impact activities, you can take them running with you, play frisbee, go hiking, train for dog sports, and more. As one of the most active dog breeds , you will likely run out of energy before they do and they will likely be up for even more activity if you are. An English Cream Golden Retriever generally lives for years on average. Golden Retrievers are one of the dog breeds of famous dogs.

You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace. Written step-by-step video tutorial: For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin. Step 1: Lightly sketch two small ovals for the cartoon golden retriever's eyes. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. When you get the shapes right, darken the lines. Inside each eye, draw two tiny circles for highlights. Shade in the dog's eyes but don't overlap the tiny highlight circles. The eye on the right should be a tiny bit bigger than the eye on the left. Step 2: Below the eye on the left, draw a small oval on its side for the dog's nose. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape and position right. Inside draw a smaller oval for highlight. Shade the golden retriever's nose but don't overlap the highlight. The nose should be only slightly bigger than the eyes. Step 3: Lightly sketch a curved line on the left side for the golden retriever's muzzle. When you get the shape of the line right, darken it. The line should start to the left of the eyes, then curve under the dog's nose and stretch to the right. Step 4: On the left, lightly sketch a line that curves up high and to the right for the top of the golden retriever's head. When you get the shape right, darken the line. At the top, draw three small, spike-like shapes for fur. Pay attention to how high above the eyes the top of the dog's head is. Step 5: To the right of the head, draw a big triangular shape for the first ear. The top part of the ear consists of two short, curved lines that slope down to the right a bit. Along the path of the curved lines, draw a couple of small, spike-like shapes for fur. The bottom part of the golden retriever's ear should be similar to a big letter V with a rounded bottom. Daily Paws' Editorial Guidelines Published on October 22, I'm not sure anyone has looked as happy turning on the TV as this golden named Charlie does as he readies to watch the golden retriever cartoon, Dug Days. Charlie's dog mom, Jade also known as charliethegoldensmom on TikTok , captured the adorable video in a popular video that was posted Oct. Jade asks if he's watching cartoons, but he's so focused on the on-screen Dug that he doesn't respond with an appreciative bark until the credits end. It's as sweet as it is relatable. The short episodes are immensely fun and cute and show how a canine companion can improve your everyday life greatly all rooted in science , I might add. My favorite episode is the one in which Dug has to babysit a litter of puppies. Highjinx, predictably, ensued. Even if it's not an enjoyable program like Dug Days, it turns out that dogs like Charlie really can watch TV. In fact, TVs have gotten so advanced now—close enough to real life—that dogs have become more interested in what's on the screen , especially if it's an animal. Will your dog act the same way Charlie does when they watch Dug? Only one way to find out. Best case is that you have a cute TikTok video of your own to share with the world. Worst case? You still get to watch an adorable animated series you can knock out in one sitting. Let us know how it goes with your dog using the DailyPawsPets hashtag. Was this page helpful? Hello Stranger! Care Exercise Boxadors would constantly try to eat, and thus gaining weight like the labrador, for which reason, brisk exercise for at least an hour is a must, that might be divided into schedules daily. Grooming Already famous for their glossy coat, they rarely need a bath, unless too untidy. Health Problems Although a generally healthy breed, but however, because of their specific allergy to grains they might end up developing syndromes like dermatological irritations, diarrhea loose motion , stomach-licking or foot-licking etc. If kept alone for long periods of time, they might suffer from boredom or loneliness, affecting their psychological health. Training The overly-happy boxadors must be trained to socialize with people and pets and learn dog manners as a puppy, so that they would remain within the limits of sweetness in the family, knowing the rules to remain calm and balanced. Feeding Meat should be the first ingredient, better whole meat like chicken or turkey or red meat. Grains like oats, wheat, rice, barley etc. A high-quality dry dog food divided into two equal halves during lunch and dinner is recommended. Eating is in the genes of this breed. Hence, their food habits need to be monitored, especially when they are full-grown. Interesting Facts The gloss in the coat of the boxador comes from the natural oils present in their body hair. This dog has a tail that is either coiled, or else they are docked. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. How to Choose a Mini Goldendoodle Breeder in California We have performed extensive research and trust all of the above breeders for miniature Goldendoodle puppies in California. If you live in an area of the State that is not near any of the breeders mentioned above, check to see if the breeder can bring the dog to you. Trust your gut if any red flags stand out to you when looking into a breeder. Do the prices seem comparable to other breeders? If you find a breeder selling a Goldendoodle puppy for significantly less, that may be a red flag. Learn more about Goldendoodle puppy pricing here. Does the website seem legitimate with information that is up to date and wording that accurately matches photos? Do they ask for the total amount upfront? Most breeders require a deposit but will not expect to be paid in full until you come to pick up your new puppy. Do they have a puppy contract? After adopting one of their puppies, most breeders will expect things from you, such as proving that you got them spayed or neutered at an agreed-upon age. Learn more about puppy contracts here. How many types of dogs do they breed? If you notice any of the above red flags, proceed with caution when looking into a breeder. While it would be great for there to be a single price tag associated with getting a mini Goldendoodle puppy from a breeder, the truth is that the price varies based on the breeder you go with. Factors such as papered vs. Goldendoodles with curly hair are usually more desirable than those with straight hair, making them more expensive. In addition, specific coat colors can increase the price of the puppy. Miniature Goldendoodle puppies tend to cost more than medium or standard-sized puppies, and buying from premium breeders could result in a higher price point. Looking at breeders in California may also hike up the price point, as there is higher demand than in more rural areas such as the midwest. What to Do to Prepare for Your New Puppy The biggest thing you can do to set yourself up for success is puppy-proof your house before bringing your new pet home. Ensure you have all the appropriate gear collars, leashes, puppy pads, etc. Talk to your breeder about what they recommend you have ready to go and the types of puppy food you can have on hand to make sure the transition goes smoothly. Mini Goldendoodle via sullytheminigoldendoodle How To Find A Reputable Mini Goldendoodle Breeder Selecting a breeder is a major decision that everyone who wants to bring a Mini Goldendoodle into their home has to face. You want to choose one carefully as their breeding practices will have an impact on the temperament and health of your Mini Goldendoodle puppy. Start by looking at online sources such as Google reviews, online forums, discussion groups and social media platforms to see what other people are saying about the breeder. Did they have a good experience buying from them? To take your research a bit further, you can ask Goldendoodle organizations and clubs based in your area about their opinion of the breeder you are considering to purchase from. Many Goldendoodle clubs also have their own lists of responsible breeders so they can give you additional recommendations for good Mini Goldendoodle breeders. You may also consider visiting some dog shows and events as they are a good opportunity to meet breeders in person and see their Mini Goldendoodles. You can also ask other dog owners that are showing their Mini Goldendoodles for breeder recommendations. Finally, ask potential breeders for references and consider contacting these people to ask about their experience with the breeder. Reputable breeders always prioritize the well-being of their dogs and strive for positive reviews. You should inquire about temperament and health of the Mini Goldendoodles these people purchased. Use this information to make an informed decision. All reputable Mini Goldendoodle breeders conduct them on their breeding dogs — whether they are breeding from purebred Golden Retrievers for F1 Goldendoodles and Poodles or from Goldendoodles for later generations like F2 Goldendoodles. A stipulates the health testing requirements for Goldendoodles and if the breeder is registered with G. A, you know that the breeding dogs have undergone full health testing. A heart clearance O. Ask to see documentation of these clearances before purchasing from a Mini Goldendoodle breeder. All responsible breeders should be willing to provide any health documentation. They should also be happy to answer any questions you have about their breeding program. However, if you have the opportunity to check out the facilities you should do it. Check that the kennels are clean, that they dogs and puppies have access to fresh water and also that there is not a build up of feces or urine. Comfortable living conditions: The breeder should keep their Mini Goldendoodles, Golden Retrievers and Poodles in comfortable living conditions. They should have large, comfortable kennels or dog beds and also have a decent amount of space to exercise and socialize with other dogs. Healthy breeding dogs and puppies: If you get the opportunity to meet the parents of the Mini Goldendoodle litter you are interested in, make sure they are well-tempered and also healthy. Sometimes the mother will be quite protective of her puppies so she may show signs of aggression. If you are purchasing a puppy online and getting it delivered, ask if the breeder would be happy to video call you or send videos of their Mini Goldendoodle puppies and breeding dogs to you. Ask About Socialization Mini Goldendoodle breeders should begin the socialization process before their puppies are sold. The puppies should be exposed to a wide variety of sounds, experiences, people and places so they can adjust to their new homes and adult life. Nevertheless, they should start exposing them to sounds like household appliances, provide mental stimulation with toys and games and also encourage playtime and interactions with their littermates and family. The most common ones are: Lack of registration: If a Mini Goldendoodle breeder cannot provide registration papers or other relevant documentation, it may be a sign that they are not operating a reputable breeding program. Overbreeding: Think twice about purchasing from a Mini Goldendoodle breeder who always has puppies available or offers an excessive amount of dog breeds. This may suggest that the breeder is overly focused on profit instead of the health and wellbeing of their puppies. Lack of health checks: A reputable Mini Goldendoodle breeder will conduct health clearances on their breeding dogs to ensure they are free of genetic health issues that could be passed on. If a breeder cannot provide documentation of these health checks, it may be a sign that they are not prioritizing health. Further Reading.

For Stud Introduction The Old Tyme Bulldog was developed in the British Isles in an effort to recreate a variety similar to bull-baiting dogs during the 16th century. This medium-sized breed has slightly longer snouts than that of an English Bulldog. With its short and close-lying coat, grooming is very easy. Although it may have a tough-looking exterior, it has a sweet and eager-to-please temperament. This lazy breed needs about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise to maintain a healthy body. Are you considering an Old Tyme Bulldog? Here is a brief background of this sturdy-looking but affectionate dog breed. History In the late 's Steve Barnett started the breeding program of the Old Tyme Bulldog in the British Isles in an attempt to recreate a variety of bulldog based on old bulldog breeds. It is similar to the bulldog breeds of the early 16th century showing the same athletic build, graceful appearance, and a pure bulldog temperament. These old original bulldogs were bred for kings and queens of the Tudor period and participated in the barbaric sport of bull-baiting where it got its name bulldog. During bull-baiting, the bulldog flattens itself to the ground as it creeps close to attempt to bite the nose or the head of the bull. The Old Tyme Bulldog early use was not limited to sports. Its role also extends in a city-wide round-up effort. It was trained to lead and corner dangerous wild bulls away from the crowd. Since it is a new breed, it is not recognised by The Kennel Club. Despite it, it has become one of the more popular breeds in the UK. Appearance and Grooming The Old Tyme Bulldog is a well-proportioned medium-sized dog with very muscular shoulders and hindquarters. Its chest is broad and deep with sprung ribs. Acceptable coat colours include brindle, black, pied variations, blue, and slate grey. Proud, confident and fearless, this dog breed showcases an athletic physique that projects an image of grace and power. This bulldog loves to be groomed except for nail trimming and enjoys baths. Since it has smooth and shiny coats being a short coat, has low grooming needs. To keep its coats in top condition, it only requires a weekly brush and wipe over with a chamois cloth. One significant indication of an Old Tyme Bulldog's health is reflected through its coats. You should check for bare spots, scabs and other skin problems. Also check between toes, wrinkles and tail for cysts or inflammation. If you notice anything not normal, make sure to have it checked by a professional vet right away. Although not everyone can afford to go to a professional grooming centre, it is important to know the basics of grooming an Old Tyme Bulldog and avoid potential health problems. Temperament and Intelligence The Old Tyme Bulldog may look rough, sturdy, muscular and big-boned but in reality, this dog breed is sweet with an eager-to-please temperament. This powerful looking dog breed will thrive basically in any environment. Because of its adaptable nature, it is affectionate and most often attached to its master, adapting easily to any lifestyle. It gets along well with people, especially children. While it is sociable, it is also fiercely loyal determined to protect its masters. The Old Tyme Bulldog constantly looks for human attention, which makes it excellent companion dogs. This breed is good with other dogs but not with cats. Though not a fast learner, the Old Tyme Bulldog is a smart dog. When training, it is essential to start early. It takes a lot of time and patience because of its stubborn nature and tendency to do things at its own pace. However, this characteristic must not be confused as being wilful. Short training sessions and positive reinforcement such as high-value rewards are keys to train an Old Tyme Bulldog successfully. Nutrition and Feeding A typical serving for an adult Old Tyme Bulldog is 2 to 3 cups of excellent quality dry dog food per day. When it comes from a breeder, transition the new puppy slowly to an organic, all natural diet. Servings and feeding frequency depend on age, size, build, and metabolism. The Old Tyme Bulldog needs high protein food in its diet. This helps aid muscle, bone and joint growth to support its daily activity needs. It tends to bloat so feed it smaller meals times a day throughout the day to prevent this from occurring. Health and Exercise The Old Tyme Bulldog is a generally healthy dog breed that can live as long as 12 years but like any dog breed, it is predisposed to certain medical conditions. The Old Tyme Bulldog is not a very active dog but it still needs an adequate amount of exercise daily to stay healthy. It needs about 30 to 40 minutes of exercise a day combined with mental stimulation. Take it to short morning walks when the weather is cooler. Cost of Ownership If you are interested in caring for an Old Tyme Bulldog, you would need to go on a waiting list as this breed is rare in the UK. You would also need to spend on dog accessories such as leads, collars, eating bowls, crates, beds, and toys. Moreover, you need to consider paying for pet insurance to offset veterinary bills in case your dog suddenly falls ill or gets into an accident. This estimate does not include the rates for other services such as walking and grooming. This breed gets along with children and other pets. Boasting of a stable and dependable temperament, it is a great dog for first-time owners. It does not have demanding requirements in the grooming and exercise front. It is prone to certain medical conditions like Sleep Apnea and Pulmonic Stenosis. Are you sure the Old Tyme Bulldog is the best breed for you? Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. As your dog grows and develops its own personality, you may begin to think about breeding them. It is well known that breeding a female dog before they are mature can cause health issues, but what about a male. What is the right breeding age for male and female Golden Retrievers? A male Golden Retriever can mate after just 12 months. Female Goldens are more complicated; you should wait until after their third heat cycle before breeding, which usually occurs around 18 to 24 months of age. It's best to wait two years before breeding a female to ensure they are fully developed. Before breeding a Golden Retriever, it is essential to understand what heat cycles are, the importance of the third cycle, and physical development. If your female Golden Retriever is bred too young, you should know how to make sure she is healthy and ready to conceive. Males A male Golden Retriever can reproduce after six months of age and gains full sexual maturity at 12 to 15 months. Males can mate at any point in time since they don't follow hormonal cycles. If the male maintains his health, he may stay fertile and sexually active into old age. Breeding males is a pretty simple concept. But, unfortunately, several other factors need to be considered when breeding a female. Females Like males, female Golden Retrievers become fertile around six months of age during their first heat cycle. This cycle repeats every six months but we'll get to that later! Female Golden Retrievers should never be bred during their first heat cycle. Dogs are not fully developed at this point in their lives. If a female becomes pregnant this early in her life, it can cause stress during pregnancy and pose more health risks as her body develops. Even though she may be fertile, she isn't physically or mentally mature. Young females that are bred during their first heat cycle are at an increased risk of becoming pregnant and developing health complications. Since Golden Retrievers are classified as a large breed, they physically mature around 18 to 24 months. Since we don't want to breed a female before they reach maturity, you should not breed a female Golden Retriever until after her third heat cycle and she reaches two years of age. Understanding Female Heat Cycles No one wants a surprise puppy litter or a bunch of failed breeding attempts. So, understanding the heat cycle of your female Golden Retriever is essential to create your desired outcome. A female's heat is her body's way of preparing for potential conception. In other words: your dog's reproductive cycle. There is not a definite number but Golden Retrievers usually stay in heat for around three to four weeks. However, your dog is fertile for about nine days. A Golden Retriever's most fertile period is days into the heat cycle. However, the highest fertility period lasts about five days, so you should try to breed two Retrievers between the 10th and 14th day of the female's heat cycle. Stages of the Female Heat Cycle Proestrus: the female is preparing for pregnancy. Intact males will become attracted to her, but she will not allow breeding. This stage typically lasts nine days. You'll see signs such as a swollen vulva and bloody vaginal discharge. Estrus: The ovaries release an egg at the beginning of this stage. As the estrogen levels in your dog's body decrease, her progesterone levels will increase. This means your female is fertile. She is ready and willing to mate. This stage also lasts about nine days. Diestrus: This stage will last about two to three months or until the female Golden Retriever gives birth provided she's pregnant. She will no longer allow males to mate. A bloody discharge may continue but will gradually stop. By the end of this stage, the hormone will level out. Anestrus: This is the final stage of your dog's cycle. She is not fertile and will not allow breeding during this stage. Most female Golden Retrievers go into heat twice a year, though some larger dogs may only menstruate once a year. The ovarian activity of a female starts to decline in the sixth year of her life. Most females stop conceiving after they're seven, so the female Golden Retriever breeding age is from two to five years of age. We know that we should wait until the end of the third heat cycle of a female Golden Retriever before breeding. But what happens if a Golden Retriever gets pregnant too early? You need to allow your Golden Retriever to fully mature physically. If your Golden Retriever gets pregnant before reaching maturity, it will put extra stress on her. The physical strain of carrying a belly full of puppies puts a burden on her growing joints. Pregnancy will also suck nutrients from your dog. Since the female Golden Retriever is young, her immune system isn't fully developed. This makes her more vulnerable to diseases and infections than a mature dog would be. Bacteria can infect her vaginal tract and cause stillbirths, miscarriages, and the death of newborn puppies. Your dog may even die while giving birth to the puppies. Since her pelvic canal may not be large enough for puppies to fit through, if this happens, it will endanger both the puppies' life and her own. In addition, if this happens, she will need surgery, which increases the chance of health complications. Since she is not mentally mature, she is more likely to reject the puppies than a mature mother. Motherhood is mentally and physically taxing on both dogs and humans! You can consult your veterinarian about terminating the pregnancy. Your veterinarian will perform a full risk and side effect evaluation on your Golden Retriever. During this evaluation, your vet will try to determine when the dog was bred so they can evaluate how far along she is. If you are not sure of the date of conception, they will most likely perform an ultrasound to measure the fetuses and determine their age. Once you have determined the stage of pregnancy there are two options in terminating the pregnancy. Desexing a pregnant female can be done up to five weeks after conception. Desexing is the process of removing the ovaries from your dog. She will not be able to have puppies after this procedure. Your dog will require significant aftercare following the procedure. Crate rest is crucial for the 10 days following the procedure. The incision wound will also need to be kept clean and dry to prevent infection. The second option of terminating a pregnancy is abortion. Pregnant dogs can have an abortion up to 45 days after conception. Your veterinarian will most likely use Alizin , which is injected in two doses, 24 hours apart. Before deciding to terminate a pregnancy you should consult with your veterinarian, you should never attempt to terminate a pregnancy at home. If you decide to allow the pregnancy, your dog will need extensive observation and monitoring as the pregnancy continues. It is important they are both physically and mentally healthy. They should have decent muscle tone and a balanced weight before breeding. Physical health isn't everything; good mental condition is also essential when breeding two Golden Retrievers. A mentally stable female will make a better mother than one that's insecure or has an unstable temperament. A month before breeding, the female should go through a pre-breeding physical examination by a vet. You want to get her checked for common health problems, like joint dysplasia and eye disorders. If she has these issues, pregnancy will be more difficult and she may pass the issues onto the puppies. Vaccinations for both parent Golden Retrievers should be current, and the female should be tested for parasites. DNA Post-Partum Care Caring for your dog after they give birth is just as important as caring for them while they were pregnant. You should keep your dog on a high-calorie diet, not only is she providing nutrients to her puppies, but she is also chasing them around and caring for them. Making sure your dog has a private space for her and her puppies is crucial in making sure she is able to care for them properly. Provide a clean, dry, peaceful area of the house for your dog. With too much traffic around her, your dog may become distracted and neglect her puppies in favor of you. If you are worried about your dog neglecting her puppies, a good way to monitor them is by weighing them. Should the puppies not gain weight appropriately, contact your veterinarian. You may want to constantly love on the new puppies, but you need to be cautious of how you do this. Give your dog time to adjust to the new responsibility she has, and allow her to come to you with the puppies. Around weeks, you should begin weaning the puppies from the mother. Weaning is done by slowly incorporating dog food into their diet and separating them from their mother for increasing periods of time. If you are considering having more liters of puppies from your dog, you should consult your veterinarian to make sure your dog can carry another litter safely. I recommend waiting at least one heat cycle after weaning before attempting to breed again. This will allow your dog to recover from the last pregnancy. Main Takeaways Male Golden Retrievers reach reproductive age after 12 to 15 months of age Female Golden Retrievers have their first heat cycle after six months of age. Females should not be bred until after their third heat cycle, which happens after 18 to 24 months of age. Mating will be most successful between the 10th and 14th day of the female Golden Retriever's heat cycle, as she is most fertile during this period If your Golden Retriever develops an unwanted pregnancy, there are options to terminating the pregnancy Conception before physical maturity can cause health problems Performing a pre-breeding health check ensures that the female Golden Retriever is healthy and ready to conceive Post-partum care is extremely important when trying to raise a successful litter. You should give your dog space to bond with her puppies Waiting at least one heat cycle before breeding again will help your dog recover from the previous pregnancy. Jan 20, Share Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States. They are known for their loyal and friendly personalities, and many people choose them as their first dogs. Such a popular breed is always in demand, and more Golden Retriever puppies are born every day. However, there is some uncertainty about how many puppies Golden Retrievers typically have. Due to their size, larger dogs tend to have larger litters, while smaller dogs tend to have smaller litters. As a bigger dog breed, Goldens can have anywhere from one to twelve puppies per litter, but six to eight puppies are about average. Some litters may have as few as four. Read on below to find out more. Why the Size of the Dog Breed Affects Litter Size The different sizes of litter between breeds are due to the fact that larger breeds have more room in their uterus to grow puppies, while smaller breeds have less room. This is likely due, in part, to the fact that smaller dogs have a shorter gestational period and thus less time to mature a large number of offspring at a more rapid rate than larger dogs. This difference in litter size can be important for breeders, as they need to consider the size of the breed when planning how many puppies to produce. However, it is also worth noting that different breeds of dogs will exhibit different average litter sizes, even within the same size class. For example, the German Shorthaired Pointer is around the same size as a Golden Retriever, but has an average of nine pups per litter. The first litter of puppies for a female Golden Retriever is typically smaller in size than later litters. Additionally, since the first litter is typically born earlier than later litters, the puppies may not have as much time to grow and develop before being born. She should, however, have regular checkups with a veterinarian to ensure everything is going well. Despite Golden Retriever mothers being able to deliver many puppies, not every pup will survive birth. A dam may give birth to four puppies, but only two or three will survive. Pregnant dogs require high-quality vitamins, minerals, and premium proteins in addition to a healthy and balanced diet. Additives and fillers in dog food can lead to poor nutrition and ultimately affect litter size. In addition, diet plays an important role in the health and survival rate of puppies after birth. The chances of a Golden Retriever producing a small litter are higher if they are unhealthy. It is also possible that the puppies are born weak and have a lower chance of surviving. Age of Parents Female Golden Retrievers should not be bred too young or too old. Ideally, a female should be between the ages of 2 and 5 when she is first bred. It is also important to consider the age of the male. Once a male reaches the age of 5, their sperm count will decrease. Image Credit: Chendongshan, Shutterstock Lineage Overly inbred dogs are less likely to have large litters than dogs with a diverse gene pool. Ask your breeder about their parents and whether they have been tested for defects if you are looking for a puppy. Conception Method and Timing It may surprise you to learn that the way your Golden becomes impregnated may determine how many puppies she will have. Having a larger litter is more likely for Golden Retrievers that become pregnant naturally while conceiving artificially is more likely to lead to a smaller litter. This is because the freezing process kills many sperm cells in preserved semen, resulting in fewer pups. Dogs that conceive within 48 hours of ovulation have a higher chance of having a larger litter. These larger litters usually occur in the third, fourth, and fifth pregnancy. Puppy Mills Puppy mills are commercial breeding facilities that mass-produce puppies for sale to the public. In a puppy mill, the mother dog is often bred repeatedly until she no longer can bear puppies. There are many reasons why one should avoid buying a dog from a puppy mill. First and foremost, puppy mills are notorious for breeding unhealthy dogs. Dogs from puppy mills typically have a variety of genetic health problems, ranging from joint problems to heart disease. In addition, puppy mills often keep dogs in horrible conditions, with little or no veterinary care. Dogs in puppy mills may also be malnourished and abused. Conclusion In conclusion, Golden Retrievers have an average of eight puppies. However, a breeder or owner can mate their Goldie at the right time, exercise them, keep them healthy, and feed them high-quality food all year long, but ultimately they cannot control the litter size. Thanks for reading! Just as you condition and train a Golden Retriever athlete, preparing for pregnancy nutritionally and from a health standpoint is important. The nutritional demands of pregnancy and lactation are achieved by feeding a high-quality, complete and balanced dog food. When the mom reaches a point in the last trimester when she is eating a lot of food, she should already be well-adapted to that diet. Developing fetuses are sensitive to even small changes in nutrient levels. A high-quality, all-life stages dog food can be fed to bitches year-round and is ideal for weaning puppies. Likewise, Andrea Hesser, DVM, DACT, a board-certified veterinary reproduction specialist who practices at Josey Ranch Pet Hospital in Carrollton, Texas, affirms the positive impact that comes from monitoring body condition, feeding a healthy diet, practicing good basic pregnancy management, and adhering to deworming regimens. Reynolds and Dr. Hesser share their insights and expertise here. If a Golden Retriever bitch has not been fed these foods, is an echocardiogram screening suggested prior to breeding? Hesser: Some veterinary cardiologists and nutritionists advise not to feed grain-free, exotic or boutique diets because of their possible link to DCM. In addition, there are other cardiac conditions such as subvalvular aortic stenosis SAS that are important to be aware of prior to breeding a bitch. Congenital heart defects, those that are present at birth, may not create a murmur or apparent heart disease in a young dog. However, these conditions may be screened for prior to breeding with an echocardiogram, or an ultrasound of the heart. Being aware of any heart disease in a bitch is important going into pregnancy due to the extra work placed on the heart to support the bitch and her litter. Even a minor heart problem may advance into a serious or life-threatening situation. Q: Golden Retrievers are susceptible to the autosomal recessive skin condition ichthyosis, which prevents the outer layer of the epidermis from forming properly and causes thick, dark skin and excessive flaking. Should Golden Retrievers be screened for this condition prior to breeding? Mary Beth Konesky Dr. A large percentage of Goldens with American pedigrees that test as affected do not have clinical signs or they have mild, transient signs in early puppyhood. There may be a modifying genetic factor altering gene expression in these dogs. A genetic test for the autosomal recessive disease can be used to select the best possible match genetically for your dog or bitch when breeding. ICH-2 is a more serious disease that can include weight loss, lethargy, chronic skin infections, and stunted growth, in addition to flaking skin. Q: Should we supplement our bitches with a prenatal supplement, particularly one with folic acid to help prevent cleft palate in puppies? It is absolutely true that a dog needs a little more folic acid during pregnancy to prevent things like neural tube defects and cleft palate in puppies. These all-life stages diets meet the requirements to support normal pregnancy and puppy growth, so there is no need to supplement. Q: If a litter is at risk for allergies, would feeding a hydrolyzed diet to the dam during pregnancy and to puppies during weaning help to reduce the risk of allergies later in life? This could be true for dogs that develop allergies at less than 2 years of age, though this has not been studied in dogs. Hydrolyzed diets are not as high in energy and protein as is needed for a pregnant dog and her puppies. Q: Golden Retriever bitches appear to sometimes develop excessive amniotic or intra-uterine fluid during pregnancy that can be associated with maternal and puppy deaths. I heard that feeding a grain-free diet in the last month of pregnancy can help reduce the amount of carbohydrates and thus may help reduce the fluid associated with this condition. I tried this, and then in the last week of pregnancy I also fed deboned rotisserie chicken, cottage cheese and dandelion root, a natural diuretic to help reduce fluid retention. Using this method, the puppies weighed only 12 ounces at birth compared with a normal weight of 16 ounces. The puppies in this litter weighed 16 ounces. What are your thoughts on this practice? Reynolds: The birth weight of puppies is a very high indicator — one of the best indicators we have — of puppy health. Low birth weight is directly associated with morbidity and mortality. Hesser: Most bitches with this condition only require monitoring and occasionally may need a preterm delivery. Sometimes the fluid accumulation can result in other serious complications, such as pregnancy ketosis in which bitches do not receive enough carbohydrates to support the increasing litter size. Carbohydrates are required for optimal growth and development during pregnancy, so reducing the carbohydrates may have resulted in the smaller birth weights. When using natural diuretic products, you should only use them under the supervision of a veterinarian, as they can have an impact similar to drugs and can stress the kidneys, dehydrate a bitch and potentially kill her. Be cautious of everything going into your pregnant dog. Notably, it is controversial to use diuretics during pregnancy due to a potential harmful effect. Reynolds: None, if you are feeding a high-quality, complete and balanced food. It is much better to start with a great diet that supports moms through pregnancy and lactation and puppies through weaning and growth than it is to add supplements and other foods to a minimal diet. Every time you add something to a diet, you risk putting it out of balance. Q: What can a breeder do to prevent mastitis, the painful inflammation of the mammary glands caused by bacterial infection? Brianna Bischoff Dr. Hesser: Cleanliness is the best preventive for mammary gland infections. A scrupulously clean whelping box is paramount. If you stimulate mammary glands to check if the bitch is producing milk, do so only as needed and make sure to be as clean as possible to reduce the risk of ascending bacteria. Checking her glands regularly for lumps, engorgement, warmth, color changes, or changes in milk color or texture is a good idea. Reynolds: It is important to manage how you feed the mother as puppies are weaned because she is making a lot of milk. If you abruptly take the puppies away, she can get mastitis. I feed the mother at the same time as the puppies in a separate area to control how much she eats and to monitor how much they are eating. When the puppies are from 5 to7 weeks old, I increase the amount of time they are separated from the mother, so they are not nursing very much. Three things stimulate milk production: nursing, food and water. Is feeding different Pro Plan puppy foods a problem for puppies? Reynolds: When you are looking at foods to feed puppies, you want to make sure you are feeding a food appropriate for all-life stages or for puppies. Whenever you are transitioning a dog from one diet to another, you want to make the change slowly over two weeks or so because it takes a while for their microbiome and gastrointestinal tract to adjust to the new diet. Even if the new diet is a great diet, you are going to get some disturbances. If they are too abrupt, you can end up with diarrhea. Q: Living in the Pacific Northwest, where mild temperatures and damp conditions are ideal for coccidiosis, it is not uncommon for puppies to become affected with coccidia around 10 or 11 weeks of age and go off their puppy food. After they recover from coccidia, I often have trouble getting them to go back to their puppy food. My latest litter was weaned on the all-life stages food, and they never went off the food. Do pups fare better going straight to the all-life stages food rather than feeding a puppy food? Tonya Struble Dr. They may associate the smell and taste of the puppy food with when they first got sick and have an aversion to the food. The key with Golden Retriever puppies is to be particularly careful not to let them grow too fast or get too heavy. Because these foods are higher in energy, it is important to watch and manage their growth and weight to prevent excessive rates that could lead to the risk of developing metabolic bone disease. You could consider feeding one of the Purina Pro Plan Large Breed puppy foods, which contain 28 percent protein and 18 percent fat, to promote a healthy growth rate. We can decrease by threefold the chances of puppies getting these disorders by how we feed them. Q: If puppies are weaned on a puppy food, at what age do you recommend switching these dogs to an all-life stages Purina Pro Plan food? Is this the best way to feed puppies? Nona Bauer Dr. Reynolds: You can make that transition at any point with one of the Purina Pro Plan all-life stages foods. I like to make the transition earlier than most people because these foods are in the range of 26 to 30 percent protein and 16 to 20 percent fat, making them really nice diets to transition puppies on. If you do those two things, your chances of ending up with a really healthy adult dog are dramatically increased. Q: Does the bacteria source in a probiotic impact the success of the supplement in reducing stress diarrhea? What is the evidence behind this claim? Reynolds: Yes, probiotics, or live beneficial bacteria, have very different properties giving them different health benefits. The type and amount of the bacteria used are extremely important. The probiotic contained in FortiFlora, Enterococcus faecium SF68, has a gastrointestinal and immune effect. At Purina, we conducted two efficacy trials to evaluate the benefits of SF68 in puppies fed a control diet or a diet supplemented with the probiotic from weaning through 1 year of age. These studies showed that during weaning, puppies fed SF68 had more stable microflora patterns than puppies fed the control food. Golden Retriever Heat Cycles Explained: Complete Guide Posted on May 9, by Galen Kauffman Share: Golden Retrievers are not only adorable and loving companions but also fascinating creatures when it comes to their reproductive cycles. As a first-time Golden Retriever owner, you may find yourself wondering how to handle your furry friend during her heat cycle. Fear not, as this article will provide you with all the essential information and practical advice to navigate this journey with ease. Key Takeaways: Golden Retrievers go through heat cycles, also known as estrus, which is a natural part of their reproductive process. Responsible pet ownership includes considering the best time for breeding, potential health risks, and the importance of spaying or neutering. Plan for potential behavioral changes and be patient and understanding with your dog. Stock up on washable doggy diapers and designate a comfortable resting area for your dog during her heat. Allowing your Golden Retriever to roam freely outside during heat may lead to unplanned breeding. Designate a comfortable and secluded area for your dog to rest during her heat. Regularly clean and sanitize the designated area to ensure a hygienic environment. The first heat cycle usually occurs around the age of six to fifteen months. Dogs usually experience two heat cycles per year, although this can vary. Breeding a Golden Retriever during her heat cycle is not mandatory and should be a carefully considered decision. Responsible breeding requires thorough research, proper planning, and finding suitable mates. Estrus: This is the fertile phase, lasting around 5 to 13 days. Your dog will be receptive to mating and may seek out male dogs. It lasts approximately 60 to 90 days and involves a gradual decline in hormone levels. Anestrus: The resting phase of the reproductive cycle before the next heat cycle begins. Silent Heat Sometimes, Golden Retrievers may experience a silent heat, where there are minimal or no obvious signs of the estrus phase. This can make it challenging to detect when your dog is fertile, emphasizing the need for vigilance and responsible pet management. This irregularity in timing can be confusing for pet owners and may require additional monitoring. Be sure to spend quality time with her. Increase playtime and mental stimulation to keep your dog engaged and distracted from mating urges. Limit outdoor walks to avoid encounters with intact males and reduce the likelihood of unplanned breeding. Consult with your veterinarian before using any natural remedies to ensure they are safe and appropriate for your dog. If your dog displays signs of extreme discomfort or unusual behavior during her heat, consult your veterinarian. Any indications of illness or abnormal bleeding should be addressed promptly by a professional. Timing is crucial for successful breeding, so accurate monitoring is essential. Various tests, such as hormone level assessments, can help determine the ideal time for mating. Unplanned pregnancies can occur if your dog mates with an intact male during her fertile phase. Proper management and supervision are essential to prevent unwanted pregnancies. Keep her away from intact males to avoid unwanted advances. Phantom Pregnancy in Golden Retrievers Signs A phantom pregnancy, also known as pseudocyesis, is when a non-pregnant dog displays signs of pregnancy. Common signs include nesting behavior, enlarged mammary glands, and maternal instincts. Phantom pregnancies can last for several weeks and can be emotionally challenging for your dog. Provide comfort and reassurance during this time, and consult your veterinarian if necessary. Differentiating False vs. Real Pregnancy A false pregnancy can closely mimic the symptoms of a real pregnancy, making it difficult to differentiate without professional assistance. Consult with your veterinarian to confirm whether your dog is experiencing a real or phantom pregnancy. What To Do Provide a calm and secure environment for your dog during this period to ease any anxiety she may be experiencing. Avoid encouraging nesting behavior, as this can reinforce false pregnancy symptoms. The Importance of Spaying or Neutering Golden Retrievers Spaying or neutering your Golden Retriever is a responsible decision that can prevent unwanted litters and reduce health risks. Engage in interactive games and activities that keep your dog mentally engaged and physically active. By understanding the different phases, signs, and potential health risks, you can provide the best care for your furry friend during this time. Golden Retrievers are pregnant for approximately 63 days, from conception to birth. Do Golden Retrievers go through menopause? No, Golden Retrievers do not go through menopause. They continue to have heat cycles throughout their lives. Is it normal for my Golden Retriever to lose her appetite during heat? Yes, it is common for some Golden Retrievers to experience a decreased appetite during their heat cycle. Monitor her food intake and consult your veterinarian if you have concerns. Can I spay my Golden Retriever while she is in heat? It is generally recommended to wait until your dog is out of heat before spaying to reduce surgical risks and complications. What age should you spay a Golden Retriever? Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best timing for your pet. On average, Golden Retrievers can have around eight puppies. Litter sizes can vary depending on the breed of dog, so there are a few factors that can determine the litter size of your Golden Retriever. This article goes over what kind of litter you could be expecting based on your Golden Retriever mother. Litter Size: First-Time vs. This is the national average for first-time mothers, so it is normal for your dog to give birth to a few less or a few more. However, it is always important for her to have check-ups with a vet to ensure everything is going well with her puppies. It is very rare that your Goldie will have a single puppy birth. Litter sizes of over a dozen puppies are also possible with Golden Retrievers, but not as common. If your Golden Retriever is pregnant, it is safe to assume that she will give birth to four to nine puppies. While it is always important to feed your dog a healthy and balanced diet, pregnant dogs need high-quality vitamins and minerals and premium protein. Dog food that is filled with additives and fillers can affect the litter size. Diet will also be a factor in how healthy the puppies will be after birth and what their survival rate will be. Health: If your Golden Retriever is obese or not given enough exercise, this can affect the litter. An unhealthy Goldie will more than likely produce a small litter. The puppies might also be born weak and have a smaller chance of survival. Age of both parents. You do not want to breed your female Golden Retriever too young or too old. The age range for the female to be bred is 2 to 5 years old. However, if you wait to breed your Goldie for the first time after they are five years old, their litters will always be smaller in number. The age of the male is also a factor. The sperm count in males will decrease once they reach 5 years old. Genetics: Dogs that have a more diverse gene pool are more likely to have larger litters than dogs that have been overly inbred. This is why if you go to a breeder, ask them about the parents and if they have been tested for defects. Image Credit: PorChonlawit, Shutterstock Final Considerations If you are a dog owner, you already know how important health, diet, and exercise are for raising a strong and happy dog. These factors must also be considered when deciding if you want to breed your Golden Retriever. Have her checked with the vet before she gets pregnant to make sure she is healthy and able to carry a litter safely. Ensure the potential mate is also healthy and the right age. However, no matter the litter size, each puppy will be a bundle of pure joy! A Canadian expat, Nicole now lives on a lush forest property with her Kiwi husband and new baby daughter in New Zealand. Less physical activity — Nothing noticeable with Raven. Hungry, hungry, hungry! More affection please — One word: Golden Retriever. Behavior changes — Nothing noticeable here with Raven. Vaginal discharge — She keeps pretty tidy in her nether regions, but in hindsight, I do recall her licking herself more frequently than normal. Bigger Nipples — This time around I started noticing an increase in the size of her nipples around halfway through. Maybe after about 5 weeks? Not until towards the end of the second trimester have we noticed signs that Raven is pregnant. More pee-pee! Belly starts to pooch — Yep! This is probably one of the first things I notice that confirms pregnancy. I mention this again below. Every breed and dog will be different. By the time she gives birth, we also start adding a powdered probiotic to her meals which we noticed has helped her with digestion when taking care of her litter. This gives us a rough idea of when she will begin labor. Antsy, restless, pacing, panting, digging, nesting… — Yes, yes, yes! We both Raven and I usually have a few restless nights before the puppies arrive. Check out the AKC website for more information about dog pregnancy and gestation periods. Our Golden Retriever was pregnant for 63 days plus or minus a day or two After she had her first puppy? Just Kidding… Raven was bred on March 1st, .The real question is when did Raven show clear signs that she was pregnant. Pregnancy 2 — It was around 3 weeks out that I was fairly confident Raven was pregnant. I noticed 3 signs. First, her stomach was big enough that she was showing. Second, her nipples were much larger than normal. Pregnancy 3 — Very similar to pregnancy 2 — This time I really noticed the enlarged nipples and her fur flaring from the side of her body. The last thing I noticed was her bulging belly. All 3 signs became apparent around 4 weeks out. Also, you can get an ultrasound, blood test, or have your vet check your dog to confirm pregnancies much earlier. Am I getting better at noticing the signs of pregnancy? Theory 2: Raven started showing earlier because she has more puppies in her belly. Theory 2 sounds more plausible to me and since Raven started showing earlier in her third pregnancy we could be in for a big litter. That brings us back to one of the other questions we got on our blog a couple of years ago: How many puppies in a litter of Golden Retrievers? So, I have two questions for you guys today: When do you think Raven will have her puppies? How many puppies will Raven have in her third litter? If you have any questions or comments please leave us a note in our comment section below. If you guys are expecting a litter of puppies then you should check out our whelping checklist. A viral TikTok video showing the puppies being rescued was shared by Kristin Erwin streetheartstx. She was driving past a couple of people with a sign that read "Free puppies" and immediately "made a U-turn" to rescue the frail-looking dogs that were in a crate. The video, which was posted April 11, has since been viewed over 10 million times and has generated over , likes. Erwin felt compelled to rescue the puppies, which are thought to be chiweenies, a cross between a dachshund and a Chihuahua. Each one weighed just 2 pounds when Erwin found them. After the rescue, she nursed them back to full health. The three puppies rescued by Kristin Erwin were in a crate by the side of a road. Fortunately, there is a happy ending for around two-thirds of those animals that end up in shelters. It's thought that 2 million dogs and 2. Erwin, who lives in Dayton, Texas, is regularly on the lookout for dogs in need of rescuing. She said her area is filled with animals in need of a home. With the help of Rescue Texas, Erwin is making sure the puppies get vaccinated, microchipped and fixed before finding owners who can provide them with a loving home. She continued: "They're doing much better now that we've got the fleas off them and started them on a dewormer. They'll need a few more doses to clear the worms up, but they seem to be on the mend. The guy said that he initially had six puppies, but three were already given away. So I took the last three that he had left. Texas is just littered with puppies needing homes, so we do a lot of transport to other states. She didn't name the puppies because she had them only temporarily before giving them to Rescue Texas.
