A few more troublesome diseases can give your doggy an unconventional 'do, and to add to the confusion, some share other initial symptoms with hypothyroidism. These include Cushing's syndrome and Alopecia X. Both conditions are rare in Golden Retrievers, but if your pup's thyroid test comes back inconclusive, your vet will want to consider these and run further tests. Allergies and Irritations Our fair-furred goldy friends are prone to allergic dermatitis and hot spots. Not only do these look yucky, they are very uncomfortable. If the skin is red, acned, broken or crusty, suspect an allergy. Regular grooming and flea control can help nip hot spots in the bud. Keep in mind that your retriever's thick double coat can trap debris near the skin, causing unsightly and painful sores later. But wait! Too much grooming also can be at the root of your pet's untimely baldness. This can be self-inflicted a bald spot from licking or scratching that aforementioned trapped debris , or a clipper injury in which case you should fire your groomer -- and do not shave a golden, as their double coat keeps them cool in the heat as well as warm in the cold. A Case of the Icky Yucks This is kind of a chicken-or-egg issue: germs can cause irritation, leading to scratching, injury and hair loss; and scratching can cause an injury, which gets infected, leading to further scratching and hair loss. Infections can be bacterial or fungal, including the famed and badly named ringworm yes, we know, it's not really a worm , but all can cause bald patches on your afflicted pet and require veterinary treatment. Creepy Crawlies The most disturbing and dangerous, and definitely the grossest, cause of doggy hair loss is mange. Mange means that microscopic or nearly so mites are munching on your friend. This can be demodetic -- caused by mites that always are on every dog, everywhere. The problem isn't these mites, it's an underlying immune issue that is letting them grow out of control, and that needs veterinary treatment. If your pet truly is unlucky, though, he may be sporting a case of sarcoptic mange, which is highly contagious and fatal if untreated. If you notice a mess on the bedding, change it. As your dog sheds lochia, you should give her a sponge bath. Do this immediately after she has given birth to remove any of the fetal fluids and blood. Then, wipe her down once or twice each day, depending on how much she is shedding. Use a high-power blow dryer, to blow out their loose undercoat. This keeps the hair at that facility instead of your home. When sponging off your dog, you should use warm water and wipe the area gently. Place the crate where your puppy can see you. Usually, this is in your bedroom at night. There are many types of dog crates. I have some of my crates over a dozen years. My current puppy Millie loves her wire crate now and even goes into it on her own to rest. Buy a wire crate that has a divider, so that you can move it as the puppy grows. Most come with a plastic tray at the bottom that slides out and can be cleaned. We bought a Midwest LifeStages crate for Linus over 15 years ago and use the exact same crate today. So the plastic tray becomes handy then. One of my golden retriever rescues, Riley, was about six months old when he came to me. He started to pull the blanket in, chewing little pieces off. It turned out he liked being in the wire crate without a cover within a few days and settled down quickly to rest. Plastic Kennel Some dogs like the security of a plastic kennel. I have those too and generally just use them for the dogs while traveling in the minivan. When I first purchased a plastic kennel, I waited until the dogs were full-grown. I love them when I take the dogs somewhere, such as to a hotel room. In addition to being ruined, your precious furry companion could get loose and into trouble if he chews his way out. The first day, your pup is just getting used to being with you. If your puppy plays with toys, you can throw a toy into the crate to lure him into it. Leave the door open so he can go in and out. Calmly praise him when he enters. Ignore when he exits. Once he knows some commands like sit, you can also exercise his mind before he goes in. In all you do with your puppy, you want to set him up to succeed! As stated above, make sure that the crate is a welcoming place with a towel or blanket. Also, a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel or a Calmeroos Puppy Toy can help. A ticking clock placed outside the crate helps some pups relax. Even the soothing sounds of soft music or white noise or a relaxation sound such as ocean waves can help some puppies be calm. A shih tzu puppy I had appropriately named Cuddles really settled down when I played a sound machine of ocean waves. You can get an app on most smartphones today to play such soothing sounds. Over the next days and weeks with your puppy, you can work on luring him in the crate. Gradually build time. It made his training so much easier. Some let out a little whimper, others have a full barking session, and everything in between. Puppies are such small, helpless creatures. Their distress is real. Puppies cry in their crates for many reasons such as: loneliness; fear; boredom; having to potty; or missing their littermates. You can take him out a few times if he keeps crying. But after three or four times of trying to get him to potty, I let the puppy cry themselves out. So, a two-month old puppy can hold it for about three hours overnight. Remember: it will get better. The vast majority of young puppies adapt to a crate.
