Characteristics of a Pug Border Collie Mix A Pug Border Collie mix, also known as a Border Pug, combines the traits of two incredibly distinct breeds, resulting in an unusual yet captivating blend. The Border Pug inherits its intelligence from the Border Collie, renowned as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, contributing to its trainability. However, the stubbornness from the Pug side might pose occasional challenges. History of Breeds This is because this mix is not a recognized breed, and individual mixed breeds, especially rare ones, often do not have recorded histories. However, we can look at the history of the two parent breeds, the Pug and the Border Collie, to understand the potential traits of a Pug Border Collie mix. The Pug is an ancient breed from B. Chinese emperors favored them and often had their luxurious accommodations with guards. Later, Pugs were brought to Europe in the sixteenth century and quickly became selected pets among the aristocracy. They are known for their friendly and loving nature, small size, and distinctive appearance with a wrinkled face and curly tail. Pugs are generally quite sociable and do well in many types of households. The Border Collie originated in the border country between Scotland and England, hence the name. They were primarily used as working dogs for herding livestock and are known for their incredible intelligence, energy, and agility. Border Collies require lots of physical and mental stimulation because of their working background. They are often considered among the smartest of all dog breeds. A Pug Border Collie mix could combine elements of these two very different breeds. The result would likely be an intelligent, active dog with a friendly and sociable nature. Still, as with any mixed breed, the specific traits can vary widely depending on the dog. Appearance of a Pug Border Collie Mix The Pug Border Collie mix, often called a Border Pug, is an intriguing blend of two very different breeds, resulting in an equally distinctive appearance. This canine typically sports a medium-sized frame, embodying a solid, compact structure inherited from the Pug parent and the agile athleticism of the Border Collie side. The face may show the adorable wrinkles of a Pug, but with a slightly elongated snout, a welcome attribute from the Border Collie side. Pugs typically weigh between 14 and 18 pounds and stand about 10 to 13 inches tall at the shoulder. Border Collies typically weigh between 30 and 45 pounds and stand about 18 to 22 inches tall at the shoulder. A Border Pug mix could fall anywhere within these ranges, though most likely, it will be somewhere in between. Starting with the Pug, it is primarily known for its fawn or black coat color. On the other hand, the Border Collie presents a broader spectrum of colors, such as black, blue, brindle, gold, lilac, red, sable, and white, either in solid, merle, or bicolor patterns. So, a Pug Border Collie mix might have a coat that blends any of these hues. As with all mixed breeds, the personality and temperament of a Border Pug can vary greatly, but some general tendencies can be noted. This breed is often characterized by its high intelligence and curiosity, which it likely inherits from the Border Collie, a breed renowned for its problem-solving abilities and quick learning. Alongside this, the playful and affectionate nature of the Pug adds a warm and endearing personality to the mix. They are usually sociable, friendly, and eager to please, making them great companions. Potential owners should be prepared for a dog that needs both mental stimulation and moderate physical activity. Additionally, their Pug parentage may contribute to a stubborn streak, so early and consistent training is advised. Their generally adaptable and loving nature makes them suitable for different types of households. Still, they will do best with owners who can provide adequate exercise, mental enrichment, and affection. Intelligence Border Collies are widely recognized as one of the most intelligent dog breeds. They have incredible problem-solving skills, quick learning abilities, and a remarkable aptitude for understanding and following commands. Pugs, on the other hand, while not considered among the most intelligent breeds in the traditional sense like understanding and following commands or problem-solving , are known for their sociability and affectionate nature. They are also quite clever and can be good at learning routines and solving fundamental problems, particularly when getting attention or food. So, your Pug Border Collie mix might lean more towards one parent breed or be a balanced mix of both. They may also exhibit unique behaviors not typically seen in either breed. Energy The energy level of a Pug Border Collie mix is likely to be moderate to high. This hybrid breed combines the playful and affectionate nature of the Pug with the brilliant and energetic characteristics of the Border Collie. As a result, these dogs are often active, agile, and enjoy mental stimulation. They may exhibit bursts of high energy and require regular exercise to keep them physically and mentally content. Owners should engage them in various activities, such as walks, runs, interactive play, and training sessions, to ensure they stay happy and well-behaved companions. Understanding their needs and providing the right outlets for their energy will lead to a harmonious and fulfilling relationship with this delightful mixed breed. Pugs are sociable and gentle, making them good with kids and excellent family pets, though they can be stubborn and have potential health concerns like breathing problems and obesity. Border Collies, conversely, are energetic and intelligent, requiring lots of physical activity and mental stimulation. They can be great for active families but may not be as easygoing with small children due to their herding instincts. A Pug Border Collie mix could combine these traits in many ways. They might be intelligent, friendly, and more active than a typical Pug but less high-strung than a typical Border Collie. Predicting the exact traits can be challenging, as individual dogs may vary significantly. Care factors like feeding, exercise, grooming, and healthcare must be considered, as well as potential health issues and the long-term commitment of pet ownership. Border Collies are known for their herding instincts and intelligence, while Pugs are friendly and pleasant. As a result, a Border Pug mix might get along well with other animals if properly socialized from a young age. Always introduce them to new pets in a controlled and supervised environment to ensure a harmonious relationship. Strangers The temperament of a Pug Border Collie mix, like any mixed breed, can vary depending on individual traits inherited from both parent breeds. Generally, Pugs are friendly and social dogs, while Border Collies are known for their intelligence and alertness. A Pug Border Collie mix will likely be good with strangers if adequately socialized from a young age. However, there might be some variability in their behavior, so early socialization and training are essential to ensure they develop positive interactions with unfamiliar people. Exposure to different people and environments can help them become well-adjusted and friendly companions. Always remember that each dog is unique, and some may be more reserved or cautious around strangers than others. The barking tendencies of mixed-breed dogs can be unpredictable as they may inherit traits from either parent breed. Pugs are generally considered reasonably quiet dogs that only bark when necessary, such as when a stranger approaches. On the other hand, Collies are herding dogs that can be more vocal, often using barking as a means of communication or when bored. Given these traits, a Pug Collie mix could potentially bark more than a Pug but less than a Collie. A willingness to learn about dog training and health is also essential. It could be a wonderful experience, but it also comes with a good deal of responsibility. Their behavior and needs will be influenced by their breed mix and their personality and experiences. These dogs may be quick learners, but they may also require a firm and consistent hand in training. Positive reinforcement techniques usually work best. Border Collies are very intelligent and require mental stimulation. This often translates into a need for advanced training and activities like puzzle toys or agility. Pugs can be stubborn but are generally easier to train. Health of a Pug Border Collie Mix Mixed-breed dogs can inherit health problems from either parent breed. Some common health issues for Pugs include hip dysplasia, brachycephalic syndrome, and eye problems, while Border Collies may be prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, deafness, and collie eye anomaly. The focus should be on a balanced diet with ample protein from quality meats like chicken or beef to support muscle health, healthy fats such as Omega-3 and Omega-6 for skin, coat, and energy, and easy-to-digest carbohydrates like brown rice for energy. Including essential vitamins and minerals from balanced commercial dog food, fruits, and vegetables is also crucial for overall health and development. Addressing breed-specific health issues, such as hip dysplasia in Border Collies and Pug Dog Encephalitis in Pugs, requires nutrients like glucosamine, chondroitin, and DHA for joint and brain health, respectively. Harmful foods, including chocolate, grapes, onions, and xylitol, should be avoided. Life Span On average, a Pug lives for about years, while a Border Collie can live up to years. Depending on which parent breed a Border Pug takes after more, its lifespan could be in this range. Health Issues Both breeds come with potential health problems. Pugs are prone to brachycephalic syndrome due to their flat faces and obesity. Border Collies can suffer from hip dysplasia, collie eye anomaly, and certain allergies. Knowing how to manage these potential health issues can be challenging for first-time owners. Grooming Pugs shed moderately, while Border Collies have longer hair that requires regular grooming. Your Border Pug could have short hair that sheds frequently or longer hair that needs regular brushing or some combination thereof. Pugs are known for their short, dense coat and tend to be heavy shedders, whereas Border Collies have a double coat that can either be rough or smooth, and they are moderate shedders, depending on the time of year. Pugs might be more expensive due to their popularity as a breed. Both Pugs and Border Collies are different breeds with different characteristics, and the number of puppies they can produce can differ significantly. Pugs, a small breed, typically have smaller litters than larger breeds. On average, a Pug may have a litter size of around 4 to 6 puppies, but it can be more or less. Border Collies, on the other hand, are medium-sized working dogs. They tend to have larger litter than Pugs, with an average litter size ranging from 4 to 8 puppies, sometimes even more. Animal shelters are facilities that rescue, care for, and rehome abandoned, stray, or surrendered dogs. The importance of shelters lies in their efforts to provide care and find forever homes for dogs. Both breeders and shelters play essential roles in the well-being of dogs. Responsible breeding helps maintain the integrity of specific breeds, while shelters provide a second chance for dogs in need, promoting adoption and responsible pet ownership. Cooperation and understanding between breeders and shelters contribute to a more compassionate and sustainable dog community. A Pug Border Collie mix can make a delightful companion for the right owner. Pug Border Collie mixes are likely energetic, intelligent, and loving dogs, but they may also inherit certain health issues from both parent breeds. This mix could be a great fit if you have the time and dedication to provide regular exercise, mental stimulation, and proper healthcare. Additionally, a loving and patient approach to training and socialization is crucial to ensure a well-adjusted and happy pet. Ultimately, this unique mix can be an excellent addition to a family that can meet its specific needs and offer a loving home. Pugs are bred as toy dogs or companion dogs that will be happy lying around watching Netflix all day. However, if you prefer an active lifestyle, avoiding hot temperatures is important. They have other health problems that you should be aware of as a new pet owner. This breed does best on a harness, as a collar can trigger breathing problems. Unlike other dogs, they shed year-round due to their double-layer coat. The cute wrinkles that everyone loves will need to be cleaned often. Also, they have some distinct Pug smells that you should be aware of. They can fart, snort, and make all kinds of loud noises that you may not have heard. Training As I mentioned above, the Pug intelligence ranking is higher than the Bulldog. This means they should be easier to train. However, Pugs are known to be stubborn, and you must have patience with the training. Exercise Requirements Pugs are small brachycephalic dogs that require at least 30 minutes of daily exercise. Below are some of the other characteristics of the breed. Watch the video above to learn everything you need to know about the smartest dog in the world. Intelligence and Trainability The Border Collie is a highly intelligent breed known for its remarkable problem-solving abilities and quick learning. Unlike the Pug, they are eager to learn new commands and tricks, making them highly trainable dogs. With a consistent and positive training approach, you can build an incredible bond with your Border Collie, teaching them various tasks and activities. Energy and Stamina The breed requires regular physical daily exercise. Otherwise, they will become bored and restless, leading to destructive behavior. This breed is well-suited for active owners who enjoy outdoor activities such as running, hiking, or even dog sports like agility and flyball. Herding Instinct Initially bred for their herding abilities, Border Collies have a strong instinct to herd anything that moves, including livestock, pets, and even children. They can make great working dogs with proper training, especially if you need help on your farm. Temperament and Personality Border Collies are sensitive, loyal, and highly affectionate towards their owners. However, like all breeds, they require early socialization. So taking them to the dog park, pet store, or anywhere public that allows dogs will ensure they develop into well-rounded adults. This breed does best on a high-quality, protein-rich diet. Feeding them a diet based on their age, weight, and activity level is important. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, increasing the risk of joint issues, diabetes, and heart problems. A responsible Boxer Breeder will be able to provide any information about their dogs that you request. Ask them if you can speak with past customers of theirs so that you can find out how they were trained and cared for as well as the personality of these dogs. This way, you are making sure that this potential dog is right for your family before you make any final decisions. References can also be found online. If you find nothing, this may be a red flag since anyone can put anything on the internet. Make sure to contact them directly instead of through their website or Facebook page to avoid scams or other dishonest sellers who use these outlets for marketing purposes only. This allows you to get a more honest opinion about the breeder and their dogs without worrying about repercussions later on. We all know that there is little recourse for unsatisfied customers but rest assured knowing that these people will not hesitate to give you an honest answer if given permission to speak freely. Meeting past customers will also give you a better idea of what type of dog they have put into your family. Meeting the previous owners allows you to look for certain traits in a potential puppy, such as energy levels or age appropriateness. Another good way to find out about your breeder is to ask them if they have a veterinarian that they use for their dogs. A responsible boxer breeder should be able to provide you with this information without hesitation since taking care of their animals is important to them. If the Boxer Breeder does not have any sort of medical history available about their lines, this might be a red flag. If they are unwilling or unable to answer these questions, this could also mean that they are hiding something from you or do not know the answers themselves. These individuals may be backyard breeders or puppy mill owners who are looking to make a quick buck and care little about the health of their animals or their customers. A few signs that your Connecticut Boxer Breeder is unethical include: They Do Not Have References- If you ask your breeder if they can provide any references from past buyers and they refuse, this could mean several things; Either they do not know how to get in touch with them unlikely or there is something wrong with these dogs that no one wants to talk about. Inquiring further will help you identify which it is but under either circumstance, it is best not to work with this kind of breeder. They Have Inflated Prices- Another way to spot an unethical boxer breeder is by the prices that they have listed on their dogs. If these Boxer dogs seem much more expensive than other breeders you have looked at, this might be a sign that something is wrong with them. This could involve health issues or genetics, but it is likely just a scheme to get more money from you without putting in the proper amount of time and care into these animals. Very Little Information about Their Breeding Program- Ethical and good Dog Breeders will do everything that they can to supply you with as many details about their breeding program as possible. They want you to feel safe and comfortable knowing what types of treatments the dog will receive and what they will be born into. There is no excuse not to provide you with this information; if your Lab Dog Breeder does not, then move on to another one. If you want a full-bred Boxer dog, make sure that you tell them before you purchase the animal. Many responsible breeders ask their customers for preferences when it comes to the age or sex of their dogs so that they can match up your needs with the right puppy. Responsible breeders will not only be able to answer this question, but they should also be able to provide you with information on what type of issues other puppy owners have experienced. If the breeder claims that all of their Boxer Dogs are healthy, then you should push for further explanation. If none of the puppies or adults have any medical concerns then that should be something that makes you feel safe. However, if there were previous owners who dealt with anything severe in the past, this information should still be available somewhere. This can include genetic conditions or simply problems with allergies or skin rashes. How to Prepare Your Home for Your Boxer Puppy When you look at a breed as hearty as the Boxer, it can be easy to underestimate how much work and time this dog will need to be happy and healthy. However, if treated properly and cared for well by their owners, these dogs can make excellent pets; which is why it is so important that you take the following steps before bringing your pup home: The biggest thing that you want to do before you bring your Boxer home is to make sure that the living conditions are appropriate for this breed. You will want to have a large, fenced-in yard where your dog can move around freely and play. If you live in an apartment or condo, then it may be time to start looking into other options; Boxers need room to run which cannot be provided adequately in these types of environments. Another important thing that needs to be prepared is the area where your puppy will sleep at night. Not only should it be isolated from any drafts or cold air, but it should also provide warmth during the winter months. Be sure to look into buying bedding or blankets specifically designed for dogs if necessary. Your Boxer will also require training as soon as possible. This breed is known for having extremely high intelligence, but it does not come naturally to them; you will need to work hard to train your Boxer Puppy and give them boundaries that they can grow up comfortably within. You should start this process as early as possible so that it becomes second nature by the time your pup turns into an adult and needs more rules and regulations than just potty training. Potty Training Your New Boxer Puppy The most important thing that you need to teach your new Boxer is how to use the potty appropriately. You do not want to deal with any accidents in the house, and making sure they are trained properly will ensure that this does not happen. The best way to accomplish this is through crate training; it may be a very foreign concept for many owners, but it is also one of the most effective methods when it comes to house-breaking puppies. It is recommended that you put your Boxer Puppy into a crate at night while you sleep and then carefully take them out first thing in the morning so that they can use the bathroom right away. Do not allow them too much time without being taken just before bed because they might make a mistake in your absence. Another important step that you should take is to keep your puppy on a strict schedule; this means taking them out for walks regularly and making time every few hours to play with them, feed them, and then let them use the bathroom once more. This will ensure that they do not have accidents inside of the house because their body will be used to getting into the habit of relieving themselves outside. You need to make sure that there are no areas where they can get injured or choke on something by accident. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. Nowadays, boxers have become popular for most pet owners. It is because despite their medium size build, they are considered as working dogs. They were first developed in Germany. Later, they were bred around the world. The American Kennel Club is one of the major dog registries. They have strict guidelines to the kind of dogs that are bred to be registered. History of Boxer Puppies Boxers were first bred in Germany. They were made to be working, guard dogs because of their muscled, lean build. In the 19th century, they were bred to be bull baiting dogs. Later, they became helpers for butchers and keeping cattle under control in slaughterhouses. Boxers came from the line of bullenbaiser breeds which are now extinct that are paired with bulldog and mastiffs. It is possible that boxers were also cross-bred with terriers and Great Danes. Boxers actually got their name from how they play with their forepaws. Others say their name comes from the German word boxl, the slaughterhouses they came from. Boxers were not popular in America until after World War I. Since then, they were the first dogs to be used as police dogs. They have also been used as seeing-eye dogs. Characteristics of a Boxer Dog Appearance Boxers are typically medium sized dogs with a short back and tail. Some are also larger built. They are built with a solid body that usually stands at attention. Their jaw also has an underbite, which means their teeth protrudes outside their mouth. They are actually made bred working guard dogs. They have a square-head that makes them look menacing and intimidating. However, boxers are not as fierce as they appear to be. Male boxers can weigh up to 65 to 80 pounds which is around 30 to 36 kilograms and can grow up to 25 inches. Females, however, can grow up to 21 inches and weigh lower than male. Females would weigh around 22 to 30 kilograms. They have a broad chest and a short, muzzled, snout. Their bodies are usually taut and tight with muscles that are usually noticeable. The ears are supposedly cropped but most are naturally folded. Most of the colors of a boxer would be brindle, mahogany or fawn. Some may or may not have white flash markings seen on their chest area. So, it is not difficult to groom them. Temperament Boxer dogs are highly intelligent. They like to stay busy and active. They love to be around people and are not loud barkers. They only bark when they see something unusual. When this happens, it is important to always take note. However, they do give out sounds like snorts, grumbles and small growls. These are actually just their way of talking. A lot of people find these sounds adorable. They also snore frequently when they sleep. Even with their menacing looks, boxers are actually friendly and playful. They are affectionate towards their owners. Not only that, they are fiercely loyal to their owners and will guard their family and their home from strangers. They are also known to be affectionate to children as well. This makes them a good companion for owners with families. Boxers are great with other pets. They easily get along because of their witty, high energy behavior. However, it is important to keep them away from neighboring animals outside the house. They are known to attack other animals randomly. They also can be aggressive to their own species especially towards the males. It is important to always keep them supervised at all times when they are outdoors. Also, they should already begin socializing with other pets at a young age. Boxers are also stubborn. They can usually get away from trouble. They would also pout once they feel they are not getting what they want. Because of this, potential boxer owners should always show the dogs that they are the ones in charge. Health Issues Any living being can be prone to various health problems. Unfortunately, unlike most dogs boxers have a shorter lifespan. Moreover, boxers can live at most 10 years. Majority of the diseases reported that boxers are prone to are cancer and heart disease. They can also contract digestive diseases, eye diseases, skin tumors and even allergies. They are also prone to back and knee problems, including arthritis. Also, boxers are known to slobber excessively. It is because of their loose lips that they slobber and drool naturally. It is not something to be worried too much about. However, it is important to also keep your boxer dogs away from high amounts of heat. When boxers eat, they gulp in air and as a result causing an excess amounts into their stomach. The excess gas, of course, needs to be released. Hence, there are some digestion problems. This can be remedied, though, by a change in their diet. There are pet stores that specialize in meals intended for boxers. These puppies are also sensitive to extreme temperatures even when they grow older. They are very prone to heatstrokes. Make sure that they get ample amount of water and shade when they are taken outdoors. At the same time, they also cannot be in extremely cold temperatures. Activities and Training Boxers are bouncy, playful and active. Because of this, they need to be outdoors all the time. They cannot sit still when kept indoors for long periods of time. They constantly need long walks daily. They should also be kept physically active and mentally fit. The kind of vigor boxers have are suitable for large families with children. They are also good for individuals who live an active lifestyle and high energy. People who like sports and games are a good match for these pups. Pet owners are expected to be jumped by them because of their bouncy and bubbly personality. Training boxers is not usually a challenging task for breeders. This is because boxers are smart and intelligent. They can learn very quickly. They can easily understand and do what is expected of them. However, training should be done consistently. Because they are strong-minded, boxers usually would play the leadership role. They are usually like that especially if they are around other pets in the house. They are reliable when it comes to keeping things in control with other pets. Getting a New Puppy When you keep a boxer, you are assured of a loyal, devoted dog that will stand by you all the time. Photo by louiespitzpoo IG Since a Spitzpoo is a crossbreed, it will take a lot of time, research, and breeder checks to find places where you can purchase one. Currently, we have no breeder specializing in Spitzpoos, so you may need a lot of patience and a little bit of luck to acquire one. Here is a list of a few reputable places where you might find your Spitz Poodle mix: Calico Puppy Ranch — These breeders have over 20 years of experience and breed numerous small dogs, including many Poodle mixes. At times, they may have Spitzpoos available. Aside from health, they also prioritize socializing their dogs, especially with children, making them well-mannered before transferring to new homes. Keystone Puppies — This advertising site is rigorous for breeders. They only list puppies from reputable sources to ensure high-quality and healthy puppies. They have Poodle and Spitz mixes on this site, so make sure you check them from time to time. Lancaster Puppies — This site lists several breeds and hybrids, including Spitz and Poodle mixes. They work to connect dogs from reputable breeders to loving homes. You can also filter your search by location and preferred price range. You can also check our article about our top ten reputable Poodle breeders for more options on where you can find a Spitzpoo. Aside from these places, you can also try adopting one for a much lower cost. You also get to save a life in the process. Here are some rescue shelters and organizations you can look through for your Spitz Poodle mix: Poodle Rescue of Houston — This non-profit organization has been rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding homes for rescued Poodles and Poodle mixes over the years. You can inquire on their website as they may have Spitzpoos from time to time. They are a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to saving and rescuing homeless and abandoned dogs and placing them in their forever homes. They have Spitz and Poodle mixes in their list from time to time, so you might as well keep an eye on their site. All their dogs available for adoption are equipped with up-to-date vaccination, microchip, and spayed or neutered. You may inquire to them directly regarding Spitzpoos as they may be available from time to time. Before you reach out to any breeder or organization, you might want to view our guides on how to adopt a dog and purchase a puppy safely for you to be more equipped in your doggy hunting journey. They have advantages and disadvantages as a pet. However, despite their imperfections, they still deserve unconditional love and care from their owners. Here are the pros of owning a Spitz Poodle mix: Excellent family pets: Aside from being affectionate and cuddly, Spitzpoos are great guard and companion dogs. They are also loyal and protective of their families, making them excellent pets. Highly intelligent: Spitzpoos came from brilliant parents, so they are naturally born smart, making them easy to follow commands and catch up in training sessions. Adorable appearance: Spitzpoos, with their teddy bear-like appearance, quickly melt hearts just by sitting there. They have attractive and friendly expressions on their faces, making them absolutely charming to dog lovers worldwide. Low maintenance: Despite their thick double coats, these hybrids do not demand high when it comes to grooming and cleaning. They are not heavy shedders, and they only require occasional baths. Although you may need to brush them regularly, they are still not very tiring to maintain. Of course, you should also learn about the not-so-good side of owning this hybrid. Here are the cons of owning a Spitz Poodle mix: Unpredictability in size: Like other designer breeds, Spitzpoos can be unpredictable when it comes to size. Each pup in a litter may not have uniformity on how big they can get. You can never predict their exact size, and you have to wait until they are full-grown adults. Limited sources: Unfortunately for these pups, they are hard to find. There are no breeders specializing in Spitzpoos, and you may find it challenging to acquire them even in rescue shelters. Barking: Spitzpoos are barkers, especially with strangers or unfamiliar faces. Although this may be good to alert you whenever there are intruders, if you like a quiet home and are fond of having guests in your house, you may need to dedicate time and effort to socialize your dog. Knowing the pros and cons can help aspiring owners assess if they are a perfect fit for this hybrid. On average, a Japanese Spitz weighs anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds. You can expect your Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid to weigh eight to 17 pounds, with an average weight of about ten pounds. This is a cute little dog with large, round eyes, a fluffy coat, and even bodily proportions. The ears of this mix could be erect or floppy. Some Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrids have halfway erect ears with tips that fold over at the top. When raised in a positive and confidence-reinforcing environment, this dog should grow to be lively and friendly toward strangers and other animals. However, this intelligent dog is also prone to reacting poorly to traumatic situations. Since this dog learns so quickly, it can retain negative behaviors by accident. Keep this in mind when raising your Japanese Spitz Poodle puppy. This hybrid could have either a single or double-layered coat. Most Japanese Spitz poodle mixes are white or cream-colored. However, this mix can occasionally have a coat that is beige, tan, light brown, or other light colors. It will depend on the genetics of the breeding parents. Japanese Spitz Poodle Mix Grooming Needs Although these dogs are cute and cuddly, their soft coats can be difficult to maintain. In many cases, this coat will also be pretty long. If it has a slight curl to it, grooming gets even harder. It is wise to brush this dog regularly to prevent clumps or mats from forming. When grooming thick, curly coats, a good offense is the best defense. Regular grooming appointments to remove the undercoat if your dog has one are highly recommended. You may also want to use a conditioning treatment before combing or brushing this hybrid. It may also be smart to get your dog used brushes, baths, blow dryers, and clippers from an early age. This dog can be averse to having its hair brushed or pulled. Try to make grooming a positive experience from the start and get your puppy used to all of the necessary grooming accessories before they are fully grown. That way, things go much smoother as your dog ages. As such, you can expect a Japanese Spitz Poodle mix to live an average of 10 to 15 years! According to Dr. Jan Bellows of the American Veterinary Dental College, this will help them have a longer, happier life. Hybrids are often healthier than purebred dogs because they have more genetic diversity. Not only is the Japanese Spitz Poodle mix healthier than a purebred dog, but it combines two of the healthiest purebreds around. Indeed, Poodles and Japanese Spitz dogs are some of the healthiest little canines even though they are purebred. That is not to say that a purebred dog can not be healthy. However, many purebred dogs have been poorly genetically diversified through the years, leading to health issues. In any case, this hybrid is usually healthy and is likely to have a long life! This small dog may develop dental problems if its teeth are not cleaned properly after meals. Dental chews like Minties or Greenies can easily be given to your Spitz Poodle mix after a meal. Japanese Spitz Poodle Mix Exercise Requirements The exercise requirements of this dog are not likely to be overly demanding. In fact, you may be able to exercise your Japanese Spitz Poodle mix by throwing a toy across your living room and allowing them to retrieve it for you! This dog is also likely to enjoy a daily walk. Apart from physical exercise, it is important to provide this intelligent little dog with plenty of mental stimulation. Puzzle toys are a great way to engage the mind of your Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid. You may also want to enroll this dog in agility competitions. It is equally as important to exercise the mind of your Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid as it is to exercise its body. Poodles are very outgoing and affectionate. The Japanese Spitz is smart and full of energy. When combined, you will have a dog that loves to play and spend time with its family. Neither the Japanese Spitz nor the Poodle is a particularly territorial breed. However, to ensure that things go well, it is best to socialize your Japanese Spitz Poodle properly with other animals starting in puppyhood. Socialization will help to ensure that all pets in your home get along harmoniously! This dog will easily pick up on all kinds of new tricks. With so much energy, this hybrid is likely to learn tasks quickly and complete them with lots of wagging and excitement. Since this dog learns so quickly, remember to form a close bond with them at an early age. Potty Training Considerations You should know that this mix could take some effort in the house training department as a puppy and maybe even as an adult. This is not because a Japanese Spitz Poodle hybrid is unintelligent. Although this dog is smart and easy to train, it has a very small bladder. This means that it cannot wait for more than a couple of hours to use the bathroom. As you teach your Japanese Spitz Poodle mix not to go potty in the house, remember that their bladder will not mature fully until they are at least six months old. As such, you will need to let your puppy outside to use the bathroom at least every hour for a few months. Even when fully grown, this small dog will likely need to go outside to defecate more often than certain large or medium dog breeds. However, since this mix is so smart, you may be able to install a doggie door. As long as you have a fenced-in yard, this dog can easily be trusted to go in and out of the house as needed. Although the Japanese Spitz is one of the rarer breeds, Poodles are very popular in the United States. Remember to never purchase a Japanese Spitz Poodle from a puppy mill. Instead, find a toy or small dog breeder with experience caring for both breeds. Take your time and get to know the breeder before reserving your puppy. This will help to ensure that you get a healthy, happy puppy with a good temperament. Try to bring home your puppy at exactly eight weeks old. This is the ideal time to begin forming a bond with a young dog. After all, these dogs can live for many years! You definitely want to make a good investment and start things right. I am passionate about all things related to fluffy dogs and love sharing my knowledge with others. I first discovered my passion for fluffy dogs when I adopted a Shih Tzu over 10 years ago, and I have been an avid fan ever since. Post navigation. Height: 12 - 15 inches at the shoulder Weight: 15 - 19 lb. This should make a very friendly, family oriented dog. It could obviously be a very high energy and hyper dog that will be pretty small. They should get along well with other animals if exposed and socialized properly as well. They are somewhat capable of independence, or alone time when the house is noisy or full. She responds well to positive reinforcement, like all dogs. She should be Bostonher affectionate and enjoy spending lots of time with you. This is not a dog for a low energy couch potato. Give them baths as needed, but not so much that you dry out their skin. Never tie your dog up outside - that is inhumane and not fair to him. What are the exercise requirements? Take back control of their behavior using these quick and easy solutions to stop German Shepherd biting that actually works. Even better, have a set of toys that are only used when you want to engage in play with your puppy. Hide these toys in a basket or box after your game of play. This makes them extra special. They are under your control and your dog must give them back to you. Special toys are more fun for your pup to bite than you. When in doubt of what special toy your dog likes, choose from this specially-curated list of what toys German Shepherds love for interactive toy ideas to keep your dog entertained. Say OUCH! When your pup bites you, say OUCH firmly. This simple technique catches the attention of many puppies when done correctly and can train a German Shepherd puppy to not bite you. You could also make a YIP sound instead, just like their little brother and sisters would make a yipping noise when playing too rough. If they continue to bite and nip, say OUCH again and then get up immediately and leave the room for a few moments. You may return to play but keep repeating this simple process until they learn to keep their teeth on their toys. This will only encourage them to continue their unwanted behavior. Use Puppy-Safe Partition Gates Only use pet-safe partition gates that are high enough to prevent your German Shepherd from jumping over. If your pup bites you aggressively when you and your family walk past you, then use an exercise pen or this German Shepherd-sized pet safe partition gate to contain them. Only use pet-safe partition gates that are high enough to prevent and discourage your German Shepherd from jumping over to continue to try and bite you. Use the items during busy times in your home to keep your dog calm and out of areas that might increase their excitement and biting and nipping you. Puppies tend to bite and chew when their teeth are coming in. They do this to relieve the pain and help soothe themselves. Freeze a durable large Kong with their favorite treats and kibble and have them on hand for times when your dog is acting out and biting you. Give them a Kong to gnaw on and bring icy relief to their gums. Plus, chewing has been shown to help relax and calm dogs. Redirections are actions that keep your pup from engaging in unwanted behavior by showing them appropriate behavior. For example: When your dog nips you, find their teething toy to bite instead. When your dog jumps on you to bite your hands or ankles, look around for a Kong to give to them to bite on. Squeaky toys like this toy that continues to squeak , even after a puncture, are ideal to distract your dog from your hand to another object. These toys differ from their special toys mentioned above because these redirection toys are ones you leave out for your pup to chew most of the time. So, be sure to have them nearby! Use Daily Leadership Skills How many times a day do you teach your German Shepherd to listen to you and offer them leadership? Use daily interactions as an effective way of teaching your dog about leadership. Have them sit before you take them for a walk or exiting a door. Ignore them altogether. Only offer them interaction and come back to them when they show you calming behaviors. Our dogs love our attention. And German Shepherds crave it! An overfed dog that is under-exercised may display destructive behaviors because of boredom and lack of energy needs being met. Get up off the couch and go outside for a walk and sniff party. Low impact activities and free-running off-leash running are best. Choose from a list of fun and gentle, age-appropriate German Shepherd puppy exercises to keep your pup healthy and better behaved. Stop roughhousing with your dog before it frustrates them. Use appropriate, puppy-safe toys instead of play sessions. This way, your pup can bite the toy instead of your fingers, hands, or arms. You may also stress out your GSD by engaging them rough of play. For your pup to either keep up with the play or stop you from too rough play, they may bite you! From day one, avoid play that involves mouthing or teeth on the skin. Use toys to provide your dog a way they can bite to release their energy… Without nipping you! And this game is great because it teaches your dog a necessary life skill. Practice the game: multiple times a day for 2 to 3 minutes at a time Your pup learns impulse control during the game and this transfers over to their ability to stop themselves from biting you. Read below for the easy-to-follow directions. If your dog gets too worked up and then bites, then teach them this Rev Up and Cool Down game. After a few running steps and before your pup gets too excited, stop running and walk slowly. Keep moving slowly until your dog also slows down. When you see them slow down, take a few more steps calmly and peacefully. Continue with steps one through three. Each time your dog should slow down sooner and quicker. If your puppy knows any of these basic German Shepherd commands , incorporate those commands to make the training more interesting and fun. The link above will also easily explain how to teach over ten commands! The point of the Rev Up and Cool Down game is to teach them to settle and stay calm without nipping and biting you. You need to keep your pup exercised, mentally stimulated, and show them what calming behavior is. Be fair and understanding. A Shepherd is a joy to own when given the direction they desire and the commitment they need. Found this helpful? Share it! German Shepherd puppies , like all puppies, go through a teething phase, and their biting behavior can continue until they are around 4 to 6 months old when their adult teeth have fully grown in. But how do you get German Shepherd puppies to stop biting, and when should you seek out more help? We dive into everything that you need to know here. German Shepherds are herding dogs, and as such, they love to go after anything that moves. This could be cats, kids, hands, fingers, or just about anything else. The more they get away with it, the more acceptable the behavior seems in the future. Addressing the problem early and consistently is vital. Just like babies need something to chew on when their new teeth are coming in, your German Shepherd needs something too! First, it stops when they get their adult teeth. Second, if you try to redirect them to something that they can chew on, most German Shepherd puppies are receptive. At this time, they should have all their adult teeth, which means no more teething to worry about. But at least you know the root of the problem and can start implementing the necessary strategies to address it. Instead, get them a few chew toys, bones, and other acceptable things to chew on as they teethe. You can also throw a few of these toys in the fridge or freezer to cool them down, and this will offer even more relief for your pup when they need it! While there are plenty of techniques to try, we recommend redirection and positive reinforcement. The method is simple. If and when they start chewing on the toy or other appropriate object, give them praise. German Shepherds love to please their owners, so this is typically an effective way to train your puppy. Therefore, you should have levels of concern. If they are still chewing and nipping at the 9-month mark, you should seek obedience training or talk to a vet to see what you can do. So, get on it early and often, and stick with it! Because with just a little work and dedication you can get your German Shepherd puppy to stop biting in no time. Check Price on Amazon 4. Use Positive Reinforcement Positive reinforcement means giving something pleasant to your German Shepherd when they perform what you want them to do so that they learn to associate the correct behavior with the reward. The more this is repeated, they will remember and do it more often. The reward is a reinforcing motivation. In the above example of redirecting your GSDs biting to a chew toy, once he accepts the toy and starts to chew or play with it, you then offer lots of enthusiastic verbal praise and reward with a treat. Again, timing is important, and this must be done instantly so that your German Shepherd will recognize or associate his behavior with the correct action. You can give other rewards, but these may be more suited to older pups, adolescent dogs, or adults. Alternatives could be giving them a special toy, playing their favorite game, such as fetch, or taking them on their favorite walk. Always use lots of verbal praise in parallel to the reward you choose. You will, no doubt, soon get to learn where your dog prefers to be pet. Go here for more guidance on where to pet your German Shepherd. This is also useful when your German Shepherd starts to put his mouth around your possessions or furniture, ready to have a good gnaw! Using a time-out can effectively discipline a German Shepherd for biting and other undesirable behaviors. A great way to do this is to grab their collar, push their bum down, and make them sit. The idea is that your German Shepherd will quickly learn to associate that the fun stops when his nipping starts! As always, timing is critical, so your pup learns what he has done wrong at the precise moment. For very young puppies, you should only put them in time-out for a few seconds, between 7 and 10, and no longer than 30 seconds. At the end of the time-out, redirect your pup back to play and use lots of verbal praise or offer a training treat for good onward behavior. You must time the click at the exact moment your pet is doing what you want to reinforce. If you quickly reward your dog with a positive experience such as a treat, he will soon learn to associate the noise of the click with great things. The idea is that you condition your German Shepherd so that when he hears the sound of the clicker, he knows he has done something to please you. In the case of puppy biting, we are simply rewarding the puppy for choosing not to bite. You can achieve this by using the distraction technique described above. When the puppy makes the right choice and starts to bite on his chew toy, he hears the click and gets his treat. Look out for other symptoms such as drooling more than usual, bad breath, loss of appetite, or sneezing. If you are consistent and patient with your methods, you will achieve great results. Be firm but fair, which also helps to strengthen the loving bond between you and your dog. It leads to fear, avoidance, hurt feelings, guilt, stress, anxiety, and lack of trust. Owners should use positive reinforcement methods as much as possible. In another year-long study by the University of Pennsylvania, researchers found that using confrontational or aversive methods to teach aggressive dogs did not work. The dogs continued to be aggressive until the training methods were changed. The same study found that punishing techniques and dominance-based training, such as hitting or kicking, growling, or yelling at your dog, can cause aggression, as stated by Meghan E. An even more recent study in companion dogs suggests that using even mild punishments like yelling and leash-jerking can stress dogs out more than dogs taught using reward-based training. This stress causes negative consequences and poorer welfare. Alpha rolling is a controversial and outdated technique that physically puts your dog on his back or side in a submissive position to show that you are dominant or the Alpha. This old-fashioned technique is a form of positive punishment and was often used to house-train pups. Many people will have used this method decades ago without success, but at the time, they believed it was the right thing to do. For a positive punishment to work, the problem is that it has to be administered during or immediately after the act within 2 -3 seconds ; otherwise, the dog will not make the connection. Sometimes puppies naturally get over-excited and overtired. When this happens, instead of using the crate as a punishment, lure him into the crate with a treat offering lots of praise and letting him go down for a nap. If you feel sorry for your German Shepherd after disciplining him, you must never reward him out of guilt. Again, this only confuses your dog. Remember to be firm but fair. While a muzzle can prevent your dog from biting, it is not a solution to the underlying behavior issue. Muzzling your German Shepherd without addressing the root cause of their biting can lead to further behavioral problems and may even make the situation worse. Is it ever too late to discipline a German Shepherd for biting? It is never too late to discipline a German Shepherd for biting, but it may take more time and effort to modify their behavior if the biting has become a habit. Start with identifying the root cause and then take the guidance of an expert to set boundaries and train better to eradicate unwanted behavior. Final Thoughts Puppy biting is natural in all dogs. However, you now know the importance of disciplining your German Shepherd as soon as he starts to exhibit biting, nipping, and chewing behavior and how to do it. This is especially important with the German Shepherd breed as they quickly grow into big strong dogs. That could end in disaster for all concerned. No matter what you are teaching your German Shepherd, try to train him when young; 8 weeks old is a great time to start. Make sure you properly socialize him and give him lots of exercise and training will be much easier. Related Posts You May Like:. Puppies Have you ever reached down to play with a German Shepherd puppy, only to have that adorable little fur-ball pierce your skin with its razor-sharp puppy teeth? When I brought Allie into the family, she was fully in the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — so that first month was tough! Unfortunately, biting is an inevitable phase of puppyhood — it comes with the territory when you decide to be a puppy parent. My goal with this guide is to get you through the biting stage with as few battle scars as possible. Why do German Shepherd Puppies Bite? Up until this time, your puppy was with its littermates, and playtime meant lots of mouthy, nipping fun. Accordingly, this is the only way your GSD knows how to play! A German Shepherd puppy also uses their mouths to explore different things like toys — or hands, ankles, furniture… pretty much anything they can get their mouth around. Your puppy could also be teething, which can increase their mouthy behavior. Just be patient as you work through the German Shepherd puppy biting phase — give your pup time to learn to be gentle when playing or seeking your attention. Nothing is worse than an ankle-biter! I was very lucky not to have this problem with Allie. Why does your German Shepherd puppy target the ankles? Because your GSD is a working dog trying to do its job — herd you around the house like livestock. German Shepherds were originally bred for herding flocks of sheep. Your furry pal may also think heel nipping is just a really fun game. Using a toy as a distraction and keeping your pup active will help nip ankle nipping in the bud! Because she was too busy biting hands! There are lots of reasons why a pup may decide to start biting your hands. For one, good things treats, toys, love, attention come from hands. Also, hands are almost like swinging toys from the perspective of a playful pup — too enticing to pass up! How to Discourage Biting Behavior While the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is a rite of passage, there are some ways you can discourage bad biting behavior without harsh discipline. This is one of the most effective ways to teach your German Shepherd bite inhibition — or how to be gentle with her teeth. Think about when your pup was rolling and playing with their brothers and sisters — if your GSD was too rough, their sibling would let out a yelp. This trick worked great with Allie! Just make sure to be consistent until your pup gets the idea and learns to master the power of her jaws. Puppies will be puppies! Redirect the biting to an appropriate toy. For example, when your fuzzy friend latches onto your ankles, give a little puppy-like yelp, and then whip out a toy and encourage your dog to chew on that instead. Tug-of-war is the perfect game for the puppy biting phase. Socialize your puppy as much as possible. Other dogs are great at teaching your puppy that they playing too rough and biting too hard. Try a deterrent to prevent your dog from chewing or biting. If all else fails, there are lots of products designed to deter your dog from bad biting behavior. How do they work? Well, they taste awful. But if used correctly, they can definitely work. This is still attention — your puppy bites, your puppy gets attention. Otherwise, your pup may see this as a fun new game, kind of like tug-of-war but with your hands or feet as the toy. You want your furball to love playing with you! The goal here is to encourage your German Shepherd to play as much as ever but to play gently. As a pup, Allie thought she should greet everyone by jumping in their face and nipping — kind of like a kiss hello, but with teeth. And as she got bigger, it was harder to control. But trust me, it got old quickly. Be proactive. If I knew someone was coming over, I would put Allie in another room or in her crate. Once our visitor was in the house and the initial excitement had passed, I would let her out. By keeping her from greeting people right when they walked through the door, I could minimize her overzealous behavior. This is a simple command that teaches your dog to stay in her place until you give a release command. This is another way to allow the initial excitement to pass and your German Shepherd to calm down a bit before greeting anyone. Redirect attention to a toy like I talked about earlier. Fold your arms and turn away. Keep turning until your GSD stops jumping, then praise them and use a treat as a reward. What to Do If Biting Becomes Aggressive Although puppy mouthing is normal, there can be cases where biting can signal problems and possibly even aggression. Look for physical differences in your pup. If your puppy is having a moment of aggression, their body may stiffen when snarling, and bites will typically be more painful than during regular play. Also, if your GSD puppy is biting out of fear or frustration, you may need to take action. These types of behavior are not something your pup will just grow out of. While the biting phase will inevitably end, you may find yourself asking the infamous question — when do German Shepherds calm down!? I asked myself and our vet this question more than once! It honestly just depends. Sure, she had her calm moments thanks in part to her training , but she was still very hyper especially in more excitable moments. The type of German Shepherd dog is yet another variable that plays a role in its energy levels. So when do German Shepherds calm down? It really depends on your individual German Shepherd. Final Thoughts Unfortunately, the German Shepherd puppy biting phase is something all GSD puppy owners will go through, but it will pass. Try the tips above to help keep your sanity during this phase. Or any tips to help the rest of us? Please share! Since puppies lack the dexterity that you and I have, they use their mouths to explore the world around them. By understanding the behavior of biting itself, you can begin to see just how normal biting is in German Shepherd puppies. Just because biting is a normal behavior in a puppy does not mean we should tolerate it or promote it. Since biting is a form of communication for German Shepherd puppies, there are many things our puppies could be trying to say! So why do Shepherd pups bite? Puppies often communicate with their siblings through biting and pawing, especially when they are trying to incite a play session. Your pup may gnaw on your hand as if it were a chew toy, especially when you are a moving target. Puppies play and bite their siblings from the moment they are old enough to do so. This is why the behavior is so common, and why our Shepherd pupswill need to learn how to transition to playing with appropriate chewing options. Not only are our hands and feet tempting enough, but even more so when a puppy has a high prey drive. A prey drive is an ingrained need to chase after moving objects, whether it is appropriate or not. A swinging hand as we walk by can be extremely tempting for a growing pup, causing them to jump up and nip. If it seems like your Shepherd puppy is always biting you when you are in motion, it may be due to their high prey drive! They Are Curious As we mentioned above, German Shepherd puppies use their mouth to explore the world around them. Biting can help them examine and understand an object, and our hands and feet can fall into that category as well! If you catch your puppy gnawing on everything around your home, it may be their curiosity getting the best of them! A dog quickly learns what behavior gets a reaction, causing them to do it over and over again. Even if their bites result in a negative reaction from you, it still counts as attention. They Are Teething Similar to teething babies, a German Shepherd puppy experiences teething pain as well. If your Shepherd pup seems to find relief when chewing on objects, they may be biting you due to teething discomfort. They Are Herding You If your German Shepherd puppy is constantly biting at your ankles, they may be displaying some herding behaviors. German Shepherds are ingrained with a need to work, especially in dogs with a working bloodline. If your German Shepherd is always nipping at your feet, running to your side when you are moving, or showing signs of anxiety or frustration when you are moving around your home; it may be herding behavior. So how can you stop this normal puppy behavior? Redirect The Behavior One of the most effective ways to stop your German Shepherd puppy from biting is by redirecting the behavior. An effective distraction is a wonderful way to end the behavior without punishment, and show them how much fun the alternative to biting can be. The next time your Shepherd pup is displaying undesirable nipping, try to pull out their favorite toy. Since this will need to be a toy that your dog enjoys, be sure to offer them the option that they find most exciting. This can be a Kong toy , rope, bone, or any other chewing option that your dog loves. By doing this each time your Shepherd puppy begins to bite you, they will begin to understand that they would much rather play with an acceptable chew option. Having a variety of chew toys can alleviate their need to bite our hands and feet, and offer them the relief they seek in this uncomfortable transition. There are so many toys created for teething puppies, that it should be easy to fill your home with plenty of appropriate options. One of our favorite chew toys is the Kong Teething Binkie. Any attention can validate the behavior, causing them to make it a habit. This shows them that the behavior is unacceptable, and does not involve any harmful negative reinforcement. Our attention is important to a puppy, and they do not want to be ignored. By showing them that biting will only result in us pulling away, they will learn to ditch the undesirable behavior. Interrupt The Behavior Sometimes a Shepherd puppy needs a sharp and sudden sound to pull them out of a bad habit. By giving a quick interrupter cue ouch, yip, eek , you can pull your puppy away from the action and gain their attention. Because of this, it is so important to offer plenty of mental and physical activities throughout your home. For example, if your puppy nips at strangers each time they walk in the door, it may be best to limit their time around the guest and send them to a separate play area. Once they begin to understand that biting is unacceptable, you can refrain from using their separate play area as often. Similar to what we discussed above about being proactive, a separate play area can help them calm down and collect themselves. Once your German Shepherd puppy begins to mature and understand that biting is unacceptable, they should require less time away. Just as there are effective methods in canine training, there are counterproductive actions as well. Do Not Hit Or Yell Since biting is a normal behavior that puppies must learn to grow out of, it is not productive to hit or yell at your puppy when they bite. Doing this can show them from a young age that interaction with you results in something negative, and can hinder your training process. By using other distractions and training methods when they bite, you can turn every bite into a learning experience for your pup! This can seem like a fun game to your pup, and can actually encourage the behavior. Try your best to go limp when they bite you, and pull your attention away from the pup. By doing this, you show them that this behavior does not offer them any extra fun. Extra attention can validate their undesirable behavior, making it challenging to break. Try your best to refrain from reacting to a bite outside of your interrupter cue, and pull your attention away from your furry friend afterward. Biting is a normal behavior in puppies of all kinds. Puppies begin to bite their siblings from the moment they can move, and will continue this behavior until they learn otherwise. A biting German Shepherd puppy is to be expected, and should not result in any discouragement on your part. As long as you are following the tips we mentioned above, your puppy should shy away from this behavior in no time! Biting in puppies is not usually a sign of aggression. Mild biting is usually a form of play, and should be easily corrected. However, there are some rare cases where biting in German Shepherd puppies is a sign of something more. If your pup is displaying any snarling, growling, ears pinned back, stiff posture, or any other signs of canine aggression, your pup may be biting in reaction to fear or pain. If you are unable to make any progress within a month of implementing the tips we discussed above, it may be time to contact a dog trainer. A trainer can not only help your pup refrain from biting, but offer other obedience training as well. Final Thoughts As you can see, biting is a normal behavior for our beloved German Shepherd puppies. Be sure to review the tips we discussed above on proper canine training, and you can banish puppy biting for good! If you find it cute that your little German Shepherd puppy is biting your hand, think again! GSDs grow-up to become strong and muscular dogs. However, once a GSD pup grows , its biting habits are not cute at all. Trust me on this one. Little pups that bite on hands or chew on toys are doing so because they are developing teeth. Recently, we got a new addition to our GSD family, a cute male named Bobby, and surely Bobbly likes to bite everything. We did order a set of tug ropes for him and it is working. Here is the model that we ordered from Chewy. They chew on toys because their gums feel irritated and to make the pain go away, they bite and chew on things. This behavior during the teething period is very normal and not much of a problem. Another reason that GSDs bite a lot is that they did not receive proper training as pups. When people start to appreciate or encourage GS biting or nipping, they are making it develop this into a habit. Your dog will start to bite at visitors and household items. This is a problem that needs to be controlled right away or else someone will end up getting hurt. If you let your GSD bite and nip, you are letting it take over. Biting and nipping is also a play game for GSD pups. They like to bite other pups in the litter, and this is usually harmless. However, when a pup gets hurt unintentionally, it makes a loud sound. This sound is an indication for the pup that it is hurt, and it is time to stop. There are several ways you can train your pup not to bite or nip. If your pup is biting because of teething, it is not a problem. The first step is to tell your dog that biting is not acceptable. You will do this with the help of voice commands , body language, and hand signals. When you stop playing with your pup the moment it bites, it will associate no play with biting. Repeat this practice whenever your GSD bites or nips. It will help your GSD learn that biting and nipping is not appreciated. Put your other finger lightly beneath its chin. Your pup will not be able to bite you and in this uncomfortable situation, it will try to get your fingers out of its mouth. This is an effective technique that will make the puppy feel uncomfortable and it will avoid biting you. Remember, you will have to repeat this technique several times until your pup completely hates taking your hand in its mouth. Pull your hand backward and pinch your pup in the neck. Do not pinch too tightly. This will make the pup associate pinching with No, and it will soon stop biting you. Be Consistent in what You Teach If you are trying to train your dog to behave and stop biting and nipping, make sure you are doing it with consistency and repetition. While training a GSD, you will need to repeat your technique several times until it starts to learn. Your GSD needs to know that biting and nipping is not acceptable and will upset you. You will also need to become the leader of your dog, not a friend of the same level. When the dog accepts you as a leader, it starts to follow the rules you set and the commands you give. Do not let your puppy bite on your hands during the training process. Reward Good Behavior If your dog is doing well and following your orders, do not forget to offer it a treat. Food treats are a kind of reward that you offer your dog only when it learns something. Make sure you have enough treats with you when you are training your pup. This way your GSD will learn that no biting means a yummy treat. You can also sign-up for our newsletter to get an expert opinion on GSD behaviors. Hopefully, we will have the answers to all of your questions in this guide. But, all that cuteness quickly disappears when the biting phase starts. Puppy biting is normal in all breeds, including the German Shepherd. And, luckily, we have some great tips and tricks to minimize the painful biting period. In fact, it could have a number of causes. Here are a few of the most common reasons, in a little more detail. Teething One reason why puppies of all breeds may bite is teething. This stage often starts at around 3 or 4 months of age — only a few weeks after your puppy will arrive at their new home. Luckily, it only takes a few months for your puppy to have their full set of adult teeth. So, biting from teething is not permanent. If your puppy is biting or chewing because of teething, you may notice other symptoms like drooling, irritability, and going off their food. Boredom or Getting Attention Bored puppies may learn that biting gets some fun responses from you! Just like barking can. If your puppy has learnt that they can get some attention from you when they bite, they may do it to alleviate boredom. This can explain why puppies concentrate most of their biting on one family member — the person who gives the most fun response. Natural Play Biting is a natural part of puppy play — as much as some owners might not want to hear it! German Shepherd puppies, just like any other breed, will bite whilst they are playing with you or with other dogs. If this behavior continues into adulthood, the biting can be more problematic. Responding to Rough Play Some people like to play with German Shepherd puppies in quite a rough manner. This can include pushing them, or rolling them over. Behaviors like this can make puppies very excitable, and encourage biting during play. Encourage calm play between your family members or friends and your puppy. Herding Instincts The German Shepherd breed has a history as a herding dog. The creator of the breed, Captain Max von Stephanitz, bred the German Shepherd in an attempt to create the ultimate all-round herding breed. This was all the way back in the late s. Although the history of the breed has changed over time, from herding to working dog, their origins remain the same. Many herding dogs are prone to natural chase instincts. They may chase small children or other animals — particularly those that are making lots of noise. And, these herding behaviors can include nipping at heels. Once again, your behavior can minimize biting from this cause. Exploration Another common explanation for young German Shepherd biting is their natural curiosity. And, they may do this partly with their mouths. What you really want to know is, when will it stop? However, you can minimize the period by making a few easy changes to your behavior when biting occurs. The best ways to stop puppy biting and minimize the biting period are training and prevention. This means training your puppy to be gentle with you and other people, and taking away opportunities for your excited puppy to bite humans. You may need to go as far as to completely separate your GSD puppy from small children and people who insist on rough play with puppies. We know that this can only encourage biting. Remove Yourself Calmly If your puppy starts to bite you, during play or any other time, the best solution is to calmly and quietly remove yourself. You can use tools like baby gates to keep your German Shepherd in a puppy-safe room. In fact — your puppy will learn that biting during play or cuddles only results in you leaving, and them ending up on their own! Not only will this help to show your puppy that biting is not an acceptable part of playtime, but it can also help your own sanity to remove yourself from those sharp teeth occasionally. Think About Clothing You should also think about the type of clothing you wear around your puppy. Loose, hanging clothing can be appealing to your puppy, and provide something easy to grip on with their sharp teeth. Wear tight fitting clothing to minimize the number of things your puppy can bite at. Use Distractions If you, or young children in your household, are keen to pet your puppy without being bitten, you should make the most of distractions like treats or toys. You can hold a chew for your puppy to keep their attention and mouth distracted whilst someone pets them! Often, puppy owners only think about biting whilst their puppy is actively gnawing on them. One method is to reward them with treats when you are petting them and they are not biting you. Another is to reward them for calm behavior around the house. This way they learn that acting calmly and letting you touch them without biting will earn them good things! One popular method to stop puppy biting is to squeal, squeak, growl, or make another loud noise. Some people claim that this method replicates natural puppy play and tells your GSD when they are being too rough. For some owners, this may work. If this is the case, making a noise when your puppy bites will act as a reward, and encourage your German Shepherd puppy to bite you even more. This is one reason why puppies biting children is so common. Many children will make lots of noise, especially if a puppy bites them, which can lead to further nipping. This is similar to the method above, if used alone. This is why training has to be done in small stages — first you must teach the puppy what action you want, and then you can give the action a name, or command. Punishment Methods The best methods to stop your puppy from biting involve positive rewards for the behaviors you want. Studies on dog training and behavior have shown that punishment based methods are often associated with an increase of problematic behaviors. Punishing your puppy for biting can lead to distrust and fear from your puppy. The causes of puppy biting that we looked at earlier in this guide apply to all GSD puppies. In fact, they apply to all puppies of any breed. Biting and chewing is a normal puppy behavior, and a normal part of play. As long as you react to this behavior in the right way, it is a period that will pass. The biggest fear for most German Shepherd puppy owners is that their puppy is aggressive when it bites. German Shepherd puppy biting can be accompanied by ferocious growls or snarls. It can even draw blood. So are behaviors like snarling and growling. And, if your puppy is biting hard enough to injure you, they may not have learnt proper bite inhibition yet. This is the process where your puppy learns to be gentle with his teeth on your skin. The positive reward methods we discussed earlier in this guide are the best way to teach your puppy bite inhibition. Remove yourself calmly and quietly whenever your puppy bites. And make sure to reward any calm behavior — including when your puppy lets you pet it without biting. Speak to a Behaviorist If you think your puppy is exhibiting aggressive behaviors, such as guarding their resources, you may want to speak to a behaviorist. They will be able to look at your puppy as an individual case, and analyse their behavior properly. Do Adult German Shepherds Bite? The German Shepherd breed is known for being aggressive in some circumstances — they make popular guard dogs, and are number one candidates for working dog roles in the police and military.

Now I am not being critical here, but why was the bitch not up on her feet and investigating the crying? I only ask because the slightest noise and my bitches are up on their feet investigating. Could the bitch be tired after whelping and be in such a deep sleep that she didn't wake. Hope you have solved the problem because no breeder wants this sort of problem. You'd have to ask her this question. Both times she was awake. With the most recent mishap she actually did try to move but as she did she was pressing on the puppys neck even more. It was just lucky I was there and able to push her head down and release the pup. My whippet Penny was the same though, she'd be laying on a puppy and it was squealing and she'd just lay there. I was the one who'd have to rescue it. You're lucky your girls are more responsive. Just wishing you all the best and looks as though you will have to be ever vigilant with her. Looks as though you may be in for a bit of a rough few weeks. Link to comment.
