How to read Craigslist ads I sat down recently with some friends who are not dog pros. Some of them are pet owners, and some hope to be but do not yet have the appropriate living circumstances to make dog ownership practical. We looked through some Craigslist ads, and I found that we had a very different process in evaluating the ads we looked at. Invariably, the non-dog pro process went as follows: Is there a picture? Move along. Is the picture cute? If yes, proceed. If no, move to the next ad with a picture. Scan the article for an adoption fee. If the dog is inexpensive and immediately available, proceed. Finally, read the description. Take it at face value. Review all ads, picture or not. I can get pictures later if the deal-breakers are all in place. Read the description. Check out the adoption fee. Now, the read-between-the-lines part is where many pet owners struggle. This requires some critical thinking! How many other dogs has he played well with? How does he like to play with other dogs? Often, dogs may enjoy the company of the kids, cats, and dogs they live with but react differently to those who are not members of the household. This dog is likely impulsive has not been taught appropriate leash, door, or greeting manners , and may like to countersurf. This may also be a sign that there are resource-guarding issues possibly including food, space, toys, or people. Very protective — Again, worth asking what exactly this means. Maybe the dog just barks when someone walks by the house, but maybe there is something more going on. Is fine with other animals as long as she can be in charge — A bully with other animals and may exhibit aggression. We are too busy and have to keep her in her crate all the time — What does this dog do when the family is home and she is not crated? Ask why she is in the crate all the time! A loving forever home with a secure fence and another dog in the home She wants to be your "All-American Girl! Carrie Underwood is so sweet and adorable. She is a bundle of tender kisses and has energy for days. She has been a great sister to the newest foster puppies that have come and gone, teaching them the art of playing with toys. Carrie's favorite thing to do is play chase with her K9 buddies. She runs fast and does figure 8's around the resident dogs, who don't even try to keep up with her. Her second favorite activity is napping with the resident Labs. She adores the older resident dogs and has learned great napping skills from them. She continues to work on her leash skills. Carrie has been quietly working on coming out of her shell and has undergone a transformation since arriving at her foster. She loves to curl up in the lap of her FM for naps and bedtime snuggles. She still has her moments of shyness around Foster Dad, but will now come voluntarily to the couch to sit beside him for attention. She's definitely gained lots of confidence. During their walks Brock clocks roughly twice the mileage of foster mom and Daisy with his side-to-side walking style. Neither is true! These pups love to live it up at the dog park where they show off their speed as Brock sprints and dives after his Kong frisbee, often grabbing it taco style, while Daisy relishes fetching an orange Chuck-It ball before eventually resting to chew on it. Brock is also a master at tug-of-war who has learned to drop it sometimes after repeated requests so it can be thrown again. Brock is extra special because he was born without a tail, which causes him to be incontinent. Inside the house he wears diapers and a belly band, and his incontinence is easily managed.
