Puppies, like young children, need routine and firmly established ground rules. Goldens are good with children, but make sure your children are taught to be caring and responsible with dogs. A puppy is a living, breathing real-life creature, not a toy and should be treated with respect. Your children and your puppy. Provide the puppy with its own bed and do not allow the children to disturb the puppy when it is sleeping. Always make sure there are no staples that the puppy could swallow. The very first lesson should be for the puppy to learn his own name and to come when called. Call him and make a fuss of him when he bounds over and give him a food reward. If he is told off at this point he will associate the punishment with coming to you, not the fact that it was in his own time. NEVER hit a young puppy; violence solves nothing and your dog will associate pain to being with you and it will take weeks of patience to win him round again. Teach your puppy to accept you as his new pack-leader and that what you say goes. Use short one-word commands, but try to make learning fun. If you have a dominant, greedy puppy who guards his food, hand feeding him for several meals often works. If the puppy growls and guards a prized possession, remove the article and spend time giving the item back and then gently removing it again, until the puppy accepts your supremacy. Initially, a play in your garden is quite sufficient for your new puppy. After he has received his vaccinations, start with 10 to 15 minutes exercise off the lead in a safe area allowing him to set the pace. Exercise can be increased as the puppy grows, but very gradually. Remember your puppy is growing at an alarming rate and over-exercise and too boisterous play can cause damage to joints and cartilage later on. A good way to monitor exercise is a guide of 5 minutes for each month of the puppies life, ie: at 3 month 15 minutes lead exercise twice a day, which is then increased every month by 5 minutes. As with any symptom the first thing you will want to do is get a proper diagnosis from your vet so as to understand the cause and best treatment available because you want to be sure there are no other health problems. When keratin has grown a fair amount, this will cause peeling to occur. It starts to become hard and then flakes off. This can be managed by moisturising your dogs with special ointments or lotions. There are a number of products made by the Natural Dog Company that will keep the nose in optimal health by moisturising the skin for hours after application. Bread Trait Since Frenchies are prone to having a nose that can crust over aswell as having their snout pressed in Brachycephalic , it creates a breeding ground for bacteria growth. Flat-faced breeds like Frenchies and Pugs cannot reach their nose with their tongue to moisten it. As such, skin fold dermatitis is a very common problem for French Bulldogs. When this happens, a Vet should be consulted. The good news is that there are a number of creams and ointments available to help manage the bacteria and fungus growth. A Vet may also prescribe some shampoos to help control the bacteria. Allergies Frenchies are susceptible to allergies due to their short snout. Allergic reactions include other symptoms like persistent sneezing, itching, hives, watery fluid from the nose, and ear infections. At times you will notice a clear discharge from the nostrils. These allergies can create discomfort for your Frenchie and a Vet may prescribe an allergy medication. In addition, diet also plays an important role in managing their allergies. Therefore, it is very important that you keep a close watch on the colour of the discharge because infection can result. If you notice a yellow or green discharge, then you should consult with your Vet. Environment In the summer, exposure to sun and dry air can cause a Frenchies nose to get crusty or flaky. In Winter, the cold air can also cause a Frenchies nose to dry up. Further, those Frenchies who like to curl up in front of a heater for long periods of time will cause their nose to dry up. Using a good quality lotion can help control this. Dehydration Strenuous exercise or hot temperatures can cause severe dehydration, which then causes a Frenchies nose to dry out. As soon as you notice a dry nose, also make sure to check the gums and get in the routine of monitoring your Frenchies gums. This is particularly important if they lead a very active lifestyle. Properly hydrated gums should be pink and moist to the touch, while gums that are dry, tacky, and pale indicate dehydration. Keep fresh water available at all times and remember dogs should drink water regularly throughout the day. To give your dog the best chance at avoiding nose problems, owners should be willing to apply ointment on the nose daily, as well as making sure you watch for any breathing difficulties. When you wash your Frenchie, make sure you are cleaning under the folds of the skin, and drying in between as well. It is also wise to clean the folds with hydrogen peroxide to kill any bacteria and prevent an infection from forming. Is their nose drier during certain times of the day or year? How often does it happen? How long does the dryness last? As you track nose condition, consider the common causes listed above to help you pinpoint the reason. A daily new challenge continues each day along with the trainers working with the pups. Week — Field trips and socialization continues. Pups are microchipped and go to their forever homes! Note: Pups may not leave before 8 weeks old under any circumstances. They need to stay with their litter until at least 8 weeks to maximize confidence. Week - Weekly Zoom classes offered to new owners. What sets us above the rest is the enrichment we provide for our litters. I am constantly on the prowl for new things to introduce our puppies to. We go the extra mile to make sure that our puppies have the best start in life as possible. So much goes into producing high quality dogs. The other percentage comes from how the dog is raised, training, management and nutrition. While we don't know what the exact percentages for each are we do know that BOTH of them play a huge part in the temperament of a puppy. We can use this to our advantage to develop the very best and balanced program possible. Genetics We start by conquering the genetic part first by producing the finest puppies genetically. We do this by selecting our parent dogs based on temperament and other non-superficial and valuable traits while having a solid understanding of genetics so that our efforts actually produce quality. And not only do we look at the parents, we look at other relatives as well. We balance health in there as well because an unhealthy dog can become a fearful or aggressive dog. But what do we do to work with the non-genetic percentage? We provide an immense amount of optimal nutrition, training and management for the first 49 days of life. After that the very critical following two months are up to you, the new owners. By the time you bring your baby home we hope to have provided enough resources that all of you will be very ready to continue laying the foundation for a most excellent companion. So you could say that apart from genetics, nutrition, training and management I also strive to provide the education needed for new homes to continue the work on the foundation I have worked hard to solidly lay. The first month of life Our puppies start off by being born in the house. This allows us to keep a close eye on mom and babies so we can make sure everyone gets fed, cleaned and stays warm and to make sure mom is recovering okay. It's messy, loud and we don't get much sleep for the first couple weeks but we love our girls and want to make sure they are comfortable and happy. The puppies are handled every day, if not multiple times each day, while they are weighed, examined and cuddled. We breath on their faces, look in their ears, feel their feet and tails. Gentle handling causes healthy stress and imprints pups on people. From from days old they are put through early neurological stimulation AKA the "Super Dog" program. ENS is a structured program of six exercises for baby puppies—four positions, foot tickling and a cold surface. ENS as a part of puppy rearing has been shown in countless studies to have very real and measurable benefits in puppies. The stimulation exercises improve the overall health and immune system of the puppy and not just the temperament and mental adjustment of the puppy. In addition to ENS we introduce the puppies to scenting on days days as well. Each pup is presented with a different object to smell for 3 to 5 seconds. We use things like essential oils, dirt, wood, leaves, grasses, fruits, leather, plastic, and metal. Puppies as young as 3 and 4 days show clear likes and dislikes. It's amazing to see! We condition the puppies to be emotional resilient by triggering their startle recovery cycle when they are only weeks old. When the puppies are 3 weeks old they have a startle response but they recover almost immediately and studies have shown they they have no real fear response to anything at that age. At four weeks, puppies undergo a dramatic transformation, going from fully capable nursing machines to young dogs. Although most people think that is when you start developing puppies, these important things above help to develop newborn puppies during their first month of life. We still bring them in the house every day and each puppy receives daily individual attention as well. We built an "Adventure Box" that is always a huge hit. We have a wobble board that helps desensitize them to being on a moving surface. We have several different types of tunnels and a "bottle pool" that they love to dive into. We start taking the puppies on nature walks around our property where they meet our other animals horses, donkeys, chickens, ducks, geese, pig , play in the ponds, jump over logs and just have fun running around and playing with their mom and our other dogs. We try to take them on a new adventure every day. We allow the moms to control the weaning process. We will never take a mom away from her puppies. Our puppy barn has raised platforms so moms can get a break away from the puppies whenever she likes. We feed the pups times a day and they quickly learn that food is good. We bring over as many people as we can to visit the puppies, they get tons of socializing before even leaving our house! Studies have shown that the more things the pups are introduced to at a young age, the better off they are and from our experience too, this is true. We spend A LOT of time with the pups and each and every one of them is special. Because we spend so much time with them we get to know their personalities pretty well! This helps us place the right pup with the right family. One thing that I believe will help current and future dog owners is to embrace their breed s. Do not discourage their natural drive or instincts. When a dog breed was developed it was bred for a purpose. Retrieving, herding, guarding, scent work, etc. Now-a-days many of those breeds are bred for companions and not working dogs- but they still have those instincts and need an outlet for them. If not given proper mental and physical stimulation they can become destructive. For example, I hear over and over that new owners are frustrated that their Sheepadoodle puppy tries to "herd" small children and nips at their heels. Old English Sheepdogs are a working breed. They have been bred for hundreds of years to herd livestock. When small children cry or yell in that high pitched tone the dog thinks that is a good thing- a signal to continue, not stop. Even mixing them with another breed isn't going breed out that instinct. Instead of getting frustrated both you and your pup! There are many options to try- and its not a one size fits all. You may need to experiment a bit to find something your dog enjoys. For herding there are balls that bounce in all kinds of crazy directions that mimic animals darting about, or get a large hard ball that he can push around the yard. Hiding treats around the house works their minds if they enjoy scent work. A game of hide and seek or fetch is great for retrievers. The possibilities are endless! If we embrace their breed s , drive and instincts and give them an appropriate outlet it will exercise their minds as well as their bodies and they will be happier for it! People are often surprised to hear the very same noise come out of their family pet. The sound of dogs howling is different. Distinctive and rather primeval. So why do some dogs do it? And not others. Which dogs howl? Some breeds of dog are more likely to howl than others. Huskies and hounds for example. And within a breed there will be differences too. Labradors are not the breed most likely to howl, but some do. I have two Labradors that howl. When they do howl is when they hear a siren. Why do dogs howl at sirens? I have a wonderful team of working gun dogs, Spaniels and Labrador Retrievers. We live in a small village and the sound of sirens is unusual. But on the occasions when an ambulance or fire engine passes through the village with a siren blaring, my dogs all join in. They sound, for all the world, like a pack of wolves. What Happens Next If you are complaining about barking noise, DEP will send a letter about the noise to the dog's owner within 7 days of getting your complaint. The letter will include information explaining how to curb the dog's noise. Driving for more than 10 hours one way may require an overnight stay. Pedigree and Lineage The pedigree or bloodline of a Pug will matter in regards to price. In fact, this may be the most important factor for price variation seen in all dog breeds, including Pugs. According to Business Insider , the prices of pedigree dogs such as Pugs are climbing to an all-time high. So what exactly is a pedigree dog? These dogs have at least 3 generations without any crossbreeding. Anything less is technically not a pedigree dog. However, there has been concern and controversy over the overbreeding of pedigree dogs. These dogs are bred over and over again using dogs from the same family. Inbreeding can lead to a lower life expectancy in Pugs, as well as potential degenerative diseases and mutations. Rather, the opposite is likely to happen. Pugs with a superior lineage will cost much more than a Pug without. And when I say superior lineage, I really mean champion lineage. Champion dogs are those that win an event at an AKC event. Sometimes, these dogs can command a hefty premium if they have an impressive long list of ancestors. Another great reason to go with AKC registered Pugs is that you can confirm the lineage of the pup. Reputable Pug Breeder There are two types of breeders you can purchase a Pug from: reputable and non-reputable breeders. I always highly recommend finding a reputable breeder. However, just like in every industry, reputation comes with a premium price. By reputable breeders, I really mean responsible breeders. The American Kennel Club inspects thousands of kennels each year and provide certification to those that breed responsibly. But because these breeders are recognized and recommended by the AKC, their puppies do come with a premium. These colors are fawn and black. Selling different colored dogs for different prices is frowned upon. However, even reputable breeders do this. Unfortunately, this is a classic example of supply and demand. In addition, expect the apricot, silver and apricot fawn colors also see a markup in prices. Less common dogs cost more. Personally, I think the classic fawn Pug with a black mask is the most attractive. No matter what color, all Pugs will be loving dogs and companions. To sum things up, the key is to shop around. There are so many great adoption websites with plenty of Pugs that need a new home. The first site I highly recommend is Adopt-a-Pet. With just a quick check, I already see plenty of Pugs on that marketplace! Another fantastic website is PetFinder. Have a check for yourself! Visit Your Local Animal Shelters Adopting a Pug from an animal shelter is always the best, that is, if you can find one. Do a simple Google search for shelters near you and check Yelp too! When doing your research, check to see if they have a website. It might be a good idea to check that before driving all the way there. It really depends on the shelter, but adoption fees can vary a lot. Are Pugs Worth the Price? But are they really worth the cost? Pugs are some of the most entertaining dogs you can find. My pug is definitely a handful but being able to come back from work to see her silly face every day is well worth the time and money spent. Pug Owner So, yes — Pugs are definitely worth the price! Some claim that these super pedigree Pugs are more intelligent. The truth is, all Pugs are intelligent in their own way.
