Otherwise, you will need to take your Doodle to a professional groomer and factor in the additional expense. Whichever way you look at it, a well-groomed Doodle is a joy to behold. It can lead to repetitive ear infections, and in severe cases, the dog can go deaf or require an operation to change the shape of his ear canal. If your dog is a low or minimal shedder, then the hair inside the ear flap should be regularly plucked. You can also do this at home or ask your groomer to do it during the visits. Keep an eye out for redness or inflammation of the ear flap or inner ear. You can also ask your groomer for tips. Some owners or a veterinary ear cleaner bathe the inner ears of the doodles with cotton wool and warm water. Symptoms include yellow and brown build-up of tartar along the gum line, inflamed gums, and persistent bad breath. Take things slowly in the beginning. Give him lots of praise, and your Doodle will start looking forward to his teeth brushing sessions. Many have flavors that your Doodle will find tasty. The real benefit comes from the actual action of the brush on the teeth. Continue this until he looks forward to licking the paste. It can be instant or might take a few days. Put a small amount on your finger and then rub it gently on one of the big canine teeth at the front of his mouth. The next step is actually to start brushing! Then, gently move the brush backward and forward. Start with his front teeth only and then gradually do the bottom ones. Labradoodles love games, and with a bit of encouragement and patience, brushing teeth can become a fun task for both of you. Grooming for Labradoodle — Nail Trimming The nails of your Doodle must be kept short for the paws to remain healthy. They can also break easily, and this usually happens at the base of the nail, where blood vessels and nerves are located and will require a trip to the vet. If you can hear the nails clicking on the floor, then they are too long. Most have safety guards to prevent you from cutting the nails too short. You can see where the quick ends on a white nail, but not on a dark nail. Clip only the hook-like part of the nail that turns down. Many dogs dislike having their nails trimmed. You can make it a painless procedure by getting him used to having his paws handled when he is a puppy. If you accidentally cut the quick, stop the bleeding with some styptic powder. Some dogs may have tough nails that are hard to trim, but this may be less stressful for your dog, with less chance of pain or bleeding. Frequent bathing removes natural oils and causes the coat to become dry and harsh. Use a mild shampoo specially formulated for dogs. Stand your doodle in a tub, basin, or bath and put cotton balls in his ears to keep them dry inside. Wet him with warm water and apply shampoo from the neck down. Put a small amount of shampoo on your hands and gently wash his head. Rinse your doodle thoroughly with warm water. To keep the soap out of his eyes, put a dampened wash-cloth over his eye. Rub your doodle dry with a towel and then blow-dry if necessary and if he lets you! Then give him a brush or a comb. Grooming for Labradoodle — Cleaning the eyes If your dog has a discharge, if his eyes get a little sticky, or if he has dried deposits in the corner of his eyes, clean them gently with damp cotton wool. Do not use anything else unless instructed to do so by your vet. Ask your groomer to empty the anal glands every time you take your doodle for grooming. If not done then the blockages can lead to infection. Larger Labradoodles usually can express their own anal glands and do not need to have this done. This does not hurt your labradoodle but be sure to tell your groomer if your labradoodle has had a problem with his anal glands in the past or if you have had your Labradoodles anal glands removed. Grooming for Labradoodle — Brushing a Labradoodle Scruffy Doodles will need a good brushing once a week, whereas Doodles with fleece or wool coats will require an intensive grooming regime to avoid having to be clipped short. How to Brush Your Labradoodle Several brushing and combing sessions a week will keep the average Doodles neat and tidy. Daily brushing is even better if possible. Then go through the coat with a comb to make sure you have no mats or knots anywhere. Choosing the Right Brush Choosing the right brush is very important. Scruffy Doodles need pin brushes, which have long, round-ended stainless-steel or chrome-plated pins and a steel comb. Short and medium-coated Doodles will need bristle brushes and a comb. For the fleece and wool coated Doodles, you will need a slicker brush for removing mats and dead hair. Also, a steel pinned comb to make sure that there are no tangles left. There are also rubber curry combs to polish smooth coats and remove dead hair. When brushing, always check for burrs and other stubborn plant material, mats — which most frequently form behind the ears and under the legs — and any cuts or scrapes on the skin itself. Doodles shed, and some shed more than others. Regular brushing will help to keep the shedding under control. Establish a routine that you will follow through with or you will end up with a puppy with nails that may rip or cause problems walking properly, ears that have infections, and coats that are severely matted to the skin and cause severe discomfort for your dog. These are the areas that are most prone to matting. Part the hair and brush from the base of the coat in small sections. Many people only brush the surface of the coat and do not realize the dog is matting very badly next to the skin. Remember, if you cannot maintain basic brushing and grooming on your own, then you will need to budget for using a professional groomer. You should still try to clip nails and clean ears weekly at home, and give your dog a brushing at least once a week. BATHING When you groom your puppy or dog, you will want them to have a clean coat so your scissors and clipper blades work efficiently and do not wear down more quickly. Here are some general, simple tips for basic labradoodle grooming when doing your doodle at home. Eyes: Your Labradoodle should always be able to see well and not have hair hanging and restricting vision or growing up and into the eyes from the bridge of the nose! Using blunt tipped scissors, trim the hair over the bridge of nose and in between eyes so vision is not obstructed. Hair that hangs over the eyes should be trimmed neatly across the brow blending down into the sides of the face. If your dog gets eye gunk, use eye wipes every few days to keep them clean. A Labradoodle with long ear hair does NOT look like the standard for the Labradoodle, it looks more like a Cocker spaniel. Shape the ears and blend hair neatly into the top of the head. This will help prevent infections. You can use a clipper with 10 blade for a good length in this area. If the canal has a lot of hair inside, you will need to pluck it out in very small amounts to prevent irritation. Clean ear canal with solution and then use ear powder to eliminate moisture. Paws: Trim paws in a nicely rounded shape so that hair does not hang over the paw and cannot be walked on. Completely clip hair from in between pads on bottom of feet. This is most easily done with an electric clipper and a 30 blade. Keeping the paws shaped nicely will aid in less debris attaching to feet when outside and being drug into your home. Long muzzle hair results in beards that drip with water every time your dog gets a drink. The hair on the sides of the muzzle should be even with the bottom of the lower jaw. You may be wondering at this point just how important the generation of your dog really is. This dog will have a short, shiny coat that is sometimes wavy; sometimes it looks shaggy. Although you may need to trim errant tufts with a pair of scissors, always avoid shaving the coat completely. Close shaves destroys the hair shafts and endanger your dog. Brush this type of coat with a soft bristle brush, and brush in the direction the hair points. This action will help to distribute the natural oils that protect the hair coat and keep it shiny. These oils also help to prevent leaves, twigs and bits of dirt sticking to the coat. You may find that a dog with a hair coat needs only occasional bathing. The increased thickness of the coat will require a longer brushing period because you have to be sure that you do more than straighten out the top layer. Brushing each layer of fur can be tedious work, but your efforts will pay off in the end. Be prepared to commit a couple of days each week to the task of thorough brushing. Nothing else was as soft and luxurious as this fleece, and whoever owned it was respected enough to be the ruler of the kingdom. Owning an F3 or F3B Australian Labradoodle may not improve your position as a successor to the throne, but your Doodle will have the kind of fleece Jason and company were willing to risk their lives for. The fleece coat is non-shedding — perfect for homes where fly-away dog fur is an issue. On average, your Doodle will visit the groomer three or four times a year, minimum, for coat care, which includes shampooing, trimming and possibly stripping, which is the removal of dead hairs. If you prefer a shorter clip for your dog or you live in a warmer climate, you may decide that more frequent visits are in order. There are breed standard for trimming and clipping. For example, the preferred length for a Doodle coat is three inches, the ears must be trimmed just so, and the muzzle is reduced to an inch in length. A good groomer will know the standard clip for Australian Labradoodles, but if you find a look you like, show your groomer the picture so it can be duplicated on your dog. You can take on some of the care yourself. One of the first things you can do is brush and comb your dog yourself before you visit your groomer. After all, time is money, and the time you save this professional is time he or she can put into the clipping rather than the detangling. The objective here is far less about the brushing and more about associating pleasant feelings when you touch her face, feet, and other sensitive areas. This hack prevents wasted product, helps to control where you want it to go, and provides a much more even distribution of product. Simply put two inches of shampoo or conditioner into the bottle and fill the rest with warm water. Shake gently to mix. You can use regular bath towels you might need a few , however using a dedicated dog towel will be way more effective at drying a Doodle with a longer coat. Specialized dog towels are super absorbent and can hold up to many times their own weight in water. Dog hair dryers are different from regular hair dryers in that they are higher in velocity. This means that they can forcibly blow out and dry dog hair quickly and efficiently. You can let your Doodle air dry. Alas, air drying is not recommended for Doodles due to their thick — and oftentimes curly — coats. If a dog with long hair or an undercoat is left to air dry, it may cause matting of the fur and other skin problems like hot spots. Using a dog hair dryer will help to prevent matting by making it much easier to brush through. Drying Before Grooming If you are bathing in preparation for a home grooming session, you have some options when it comes to drying the hair. You can if you want to, but air-drying is acceptable in this case. However, if you will be using clipper combs, you really, really need to blow dry your Doodle with a force dryer before clipping them. In the video, we demo a pet shower sprayer, dog towel, and force dryer. For Doodles, brushing out the coat entirely before bath time is extremely important. This is because matted dog hair will get worse when wet. Be sure to brush all the way down to the skin and clear out every single knot and mat before the bath. First, rinse your Doodle with warm water all over the body to get the coat thoroughly wet, except for the head and face. Using your hands or a dog bathing brush, lather the product deep into the coat. Get it around their entire body, including the belly, sanitary area, and tail — but not the head and face just yet. Shampooing her up. Rinse the product off your Doodle with warm water. Feel with your hands to ensure that all the product washes away. Rinse with warm water until all areas are wet, ensuring that water does not get into the ears or run directly into their eyes and nose. A tearless dog shampoo is nice to have on hand, specifically for the face. Lather the shampoo deep into the hair on the face and muzzle, paying extra attention to tear stains or beard stains. It is always important to leave their coat longer on the head, face, and tail. It looks good if the tail is full and top of the head is full and ears are trimmed up. I always talk with the groomer and give them firm instructions. No shaving the face or ears or paws or tail. We groom our dogs ourselves. We sometimes leave the legs a little longer with poodles it is called leaving the pants on and or leave their paws and ankles with a bit longer coat. It can be fun to give them a whole new look with a little different cut. Buy wide-tooth combs and open wirer brush and the scissors with a round tip. It is a fun coat, that you can leave long and just carefully trim around faces. Take to a groomer and you can have a full groom cut down to an inch or two or whatever you want. The puppy and adult dog will need regular grooming because the face will need trimming as will the bum and beneath the ears to prevent matting. Somewhere between nine and fourteen months of age the adult coat will grow in. At this transition time the coat will need lots of attention in order to keep the length. Brush right to the skin with a stiff brush or rake. If the dog mats at this point she will have to clipped short by your groomer. Hair Coat The hair coat feels very similar to the hair on your head. It is unlike the feel of wool or fleece. The hair coat will shed. It requires little attention. Puppies will often look like they are going to have a fleece coat until the hair comes through the puppy coat at about eight or nine weeks of age. The doodle with a hair coat has the same wonderful temperament and personality as the doodle with the non shedding coat but is not good for a person with allergies or for a family that has chosen the doodle because of his non-shedding qualities. It is hard to get a brush through the curls if you leave it too long. Without this regular brushing right down to the skin mats will form next to the skin. Mats make it very uncomfortable for the dog to walk and run and play. We keep our wool coated dogs clipped short because we live with fields of weeds and burrs. It is quite possible to keep a wool coated dog with a long coat, it simply is a matter of keeping up with the brushing and keeping feet, faces and bums clipped. This would be a trip to the groomer at least every second month. Every six weeks keeps dogs in both long and short coats looking and feeling like movie stars. Grooming For Every Doodle No matter what the doodle coat there is grooming required. This can either be done by an interested family member or your groomer. Ears Fur grows out of the ears of a labradoodle. It begins its journey deep in the ear canal. If ears are not keep clean and dry dirt and wax can lead to severe ear infections. You can tell when the doggie has hot ears that there is a problem and a trip to the vet will be in order. Some doodles love to dig and have very thick fur in their ears. This means it could be a good idea to pluck the fur from deep in the ear. It is not difficult to take tweezers or better still a hemostat and pluck out the fur on a regular basis. I must say I almost swooned the first time I did it myself but it does get easier. Unless you are an expert it is a two person job, one to hold the dog and promise treats, the other to pluck. Your vet can recommend an ear drying powder which will keep the ears in good health. Of course, your groomer will do the ear plucking for you. If you take your dog every six weeks she should be fine. Nails Unless dogs travel on a stone river bed a couple of kilometers every single day they need their nails trimmed. Our Labradoodles have dew claws and they will always need attention. Nail trimming should be done every few weeks. It is however another wonderful thing your professional groomer will do.
