Persimmons Plums Most fruits on this list only cause upset stomach and intestines, but grapes and raisins are especially harmful to your dog. They can lead to kidney failure. Signs of kidney failure in dogs are blood in urine, dark urine, lethargy, pale gums, ulcers in the mouth, weight loss, and a decrease in appetite. Nuts Nuts Just like with people, nuts are a common source of food allergies to Labradors. Macadamia nuts are one of the most poisonous foods a dog can have. Only six macadamia nuts can cause permanent nerve damage or be deadly for your furry friend. Some other nuts to watch out for are almonds, walnuts, and pecans. The high amounts of fat in nuts can lead to pancreatitis in your dog. Signs that your dog has consumed Macadamia nuts are weakness, shaking, vomiting, and hyperthermia high body temperature. This can lead to nervous system damage. Additives Additives Sugar and salt are dangerous for dogs for the same reason they are dangerous for people. Sugar can cause weight gain which leads to heart problems, joint problems, and more. Too much salt can also cause heart problems, and can even lead to salt toxicity. When avoiding sugar, watch out for sugar-free foods. Xylitol , a sugar substitute, can lead to a sudden drop in blood sugar and cause liver damage in your Labrador. Signs of Xylitol poisoning in your Labrador are seizures, loss of coordination, vomiting, and lethargy. This can lead to liver failure. Signs of salt poisoning in dogs are extreme thirst, loss of coordination, decreased appetite, and lethargy. Raw Food Raw Food Although we are in the middle of a raw food craze, there are many reasons you should avoid feeding raw food to your Labrador. Raw meat and eggs can cause food-borne illnesses like salmonella poisoning and E coli poisoning. Raw fish not only can cause food poisoning, but also worm infestation. Yeast dough can make your dog sick by expanding in the stomach causing bloating and twisting. Raw potatoes and tomatoes have a substance called solanine that is toxic to dogs. Signs of food poisoning in your dog are vomiting, diarrhea dehydration, lethargy, and reduced appetite. It is very important to get professional help or your furry friend may become dehydrated and die. Signs of twisted stomach GDV are loss of appetite, throwing up blood clots, shallow breathing, swollen stomach, and pale gums. I had a dog die from GDV and it is a horrible, painful way to go. Dairy Dairy In the past, I would give my dogs their medicine by wrapping the pill in a piece of cheese. However, I soon learned that dairy foods like cheese and milk are not good for our furry friends. While dogs like Labradors drink milk when they are puppies, they can become lactose intolerant as they age. Along with intolerance, they can also develop a true allergy to these foods. Signs of lactose intolerance in dogs are bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Signs of an allergy are skin rashes, diarrhea or constipation, and vomiting. Spices Spices You may have noticed that after eating a spicy meal you have stomach upset like acid reflux, indigestion, or diarrhea. The same thing can happen to your Labrador. Cinnamon can even irritate the lining of the nose and throat. This causes choking, coughing, and lung irritation. One of the worst spices for dogs is nutmeg. It contains myristicin which is toxic to dogs. Signs of nutmeg poisoning are disorientation, vomiting, dry mouth, and shaking. Bones Bones While bones are not toxic to your Labrador, they are dangerous for dogs. Bird bones like chicken, quail, and dove are hollow. The only bones safe to give to your Labrador are uncooked bones from animals like cows, deer, and lamb. Cooked bones splinter easily and can cause tears and punctures. Signs of a pictured or torn digestive tract in dogs are blood in stools, vomiting blood, pain, not eating, and dehydration. Ways to Avoid Toxic Foods To prevent your Labrador from accidentally eating toxic foods, make sure you always follow these simple rules: Never let anyone else feed your dog. Put all food and medication out of reach of your dog. Keep all plates and glasses out of reach. Only feed your Labrador food that is FDA-approved for dogs or that is safely prepared by you. Educate all people in your household on what foods are toxic for dogs. Never let an inexperienced person pet-sit your Labrador. What to Do If Labrador Eats Toxic Foods If your dog has symptoms of food toxicity like irregular breathing, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, slow heartbeat, or seizures, call your vet immediately. Do not induce vomiting unless instructed to do so by your vet or poison control. Another important item to keep handy is activated charcoal. In case activated charcoal is recommended by your vet or poison control, you should always keep some easily accessible in your home. It can be purchased at most pet stores like Chewy, Petco, and Tractor Supply. Cat advice Toxic food for dogs Dogs can be opportunists when it comes to getting their paws on tasty treats, but not all everyday food and drink are safe if they come into contact with them. Learn which nine items are particularly dangerous to your dog. Onions, garlic and chives The onion family, whether dry, raw or cooked, is particularly toxic to dogs and can cause gastrointestinal irritation and red blood cell damage. Signs of illness are not always immediate and can occur up to a few days later. Chocolate However enticing chocolate is for humans and dogs alike, chocolate is another poisonous food for dogs. Chocolate contains a stimulant called theobromine dark chocolate has the highest content of this which is toxic to dogs and can cause kidney failure. Corn on the cob Corn on the cob could potentially be fatal if eaten by your dog. Avocado Avocados are another poisonous food for dogs. Avocado plants contain a substance called Persin which is in its leaves, fruit and seed and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea in dogs. Artificial sweetener Xylitol Our desire for sweet treats, chewing gum and drinks together with low-fat, diet and sugar-free products including some peanut butters so always check the label before using this as a treat are often laced with an artificial sweetener called Xylitol which causes an insulin release in our bodies. However, if your dog digests one of these sweetened foods they can go into hypoglycaemia which is linked to liver failure and blood clotting disorders. Alcohol Alcohol has a huge impact on dogs even in small doses. The drink not only causes intoxication as it does in humans, but it can lead to sickness, diarrhoea and even central nervous system damage. Cooked bones Giving your dog a raw uncooked bone to chew on is great, but avoid cooked bones at all cost. These can easily splinter and in large quantities cause constipation or at worst, a perforation of the gut which can be fatal. The active ingredient which causes the toxin is unknown, however both grapes and raisins may cause severe liver damage and kidney failure. What should I do if my dog has eaten any of these? If consumed, even small amounts of these items can be fatal so always act immediately and take your dog to the vets. Download this information as a handy advice sheet to keep for reference:. Mix in the new food with the old over a period of 7 to 10 days until the new food completely replaces the old diet. How often should you feed a Labrador Retriever and how much? Puppies, with their small stomachs need three or four small meals a day, while adult dogs generally have two meals a day. Sometimes, elderly dogs benefit from three or four smaller meals. If you feed treats for training or when out on walks, this should also be taken into account. Remember that treats should be just that — something special, fed occasionally, in small amounts. Feeding frenzy? While some dogs like to savour every mouthful of their food, you might find that when feeding your Labrador puppy or adult dog, that they scoff down their dinner in seconds, which is really not good for them. Eating food too fast can cause digestive upsets, some of which can be very serious, requiring immediate veterinary attention. By switching the food you are feeding them to something more nutritionally beneficial you may be able to change your Lab's eating behaviour and allow them to slow down. What foods are dangerous to Labrador Retrievers? Here are some of the main foods that are dangerous for dogs and should be avoided in a Labrador diet. If you suspect your Lab has eaten any of the following, consult your vet immediately. Alcoholic beverages Can cause intoxication, coma, and death. Chocolate, coffee, tea Contain caffeine, theobromine, or theophylline, which can be toxic and affect the heart and nervous system. Fat trimmings Pits from peaches and plums Can cause obstruction of the digestive tract. Grapes and raisins Contain an unknown toxin, which can damage the kidneys. Gravy If made from meat juices, it can contain high levels of fat, which can cause pancreatitis. Large amounts of liver Can cause Vitamin A toxicity, which affects muscles and bones. Macadamia nuts Contain an unknown toxin, which can affect the digestive and nervous systems and muscle. Milk and other dairy products Some adult dogs do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase, which breaks down the lactose in milk. This can result in diarrhoea. Mouldy or spoiled food Can contain multiple toxins causing vomiting and diarrhoea and can also affect other organs. Mushrooms Can contain toxins, which may affect multiple systems in the body, cause shock, and result in death. Onions and garlic raw, cooked, or powder Contain sulfoxides and disulfides, which can damage red blood cells and cause anaemia. Garlic is less toxic than onions. Potato, rhubarb, and tomato leaves; potato and tomato stems Contain oxalates, which can affect the digestive, nervous, and urinary systems. This is more of a problem in livestock. Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin a B vitamin. This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain salmonella. Raw fish Can result in a thiamine a B vitamin deficiency leading to loss of appetite, seizures, and in severe cases, death. More common if raw fish is fed regularly. Excessive salt If eaten in large quantities, it may lead to electrolyte imbalances. Sugary foods Can lead to obesity, dental problems, and possibly diabetes mellitus. Table scraps in large amounts Table scraps are not nutritionally balanced and if excessively fed can lead to obesity. Fat should be trimmed from meat; bones should not be fed. Xylitol This artificial sweetener sneaks its way into all sorts of foods — from peanut butter to jellies and jams and is highly toxic to canines. After a dog consumes a significant amount of xylitol, there is a massive release of insulin from the pancreas. This, in turn, results in a dangerously low blood sugar level and symptoms such as weakness, trembling, seizures, collapse, and even death. Is a Labrador Retriever the right breed for you? These easy-going, rewarding dogs have high energy levels, and will thrive on lots of attention, positive reward-based training , plenty of exercise as well as the right nutrition to keep them happy and healthy throughout their lives. Marcelle Landestoy, DVM If you own a Labrador retriever , you will likely agree that this good-natured breed is always on the lookout for food. Unfortunately, many foods are considered dangerous. Though some human foods are perfectly safe, several contain harmful ingredients that your dog should avoid. Foods your Labrador Retriever should avoid include onions, garlic, avocados, chocolate, grapes, and bones. Foods that you might not know are dangerous for your Lab include raw meat, pineapple, macadamia nuts, caffeinated drinks, and alcohol. Always consult with your vet before feeding your dog new food. As a licensed veterinary doctor, I will explore in this post several foods that are considered toxic to dogs, along with foods that may cause your lab discomfort so you can limit or eliminate them from their diet. We all know that the traffic lights consist of three primary colors: green, yellow, and red. These colors will form the basis of our food classification based on the severity of their impacts. In this case, your pup may experience mild diarrhea, bloating, or vomiting. Additionally, the consumption of these foods over a long duration may yield adverse long-term effects. We can relate them to kids consuming candies. These effects include vomiting, stomach upsets, and breathing difficulties. Once consumed, these foods will necessitate a visit to the pet clinic. If your pup consumes any of the foods in this category, you should seek immediate medical attention to save its life. Surprisingly, most dogs are lactose intolerant, meaning they lack enough lactase in their bodies to break down the lactose sugar in milk. As a result, if they consume an excess of milk or other dairy products like ice cream, there will be incomplete digestion causing mild stomach upsets, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, if your pup consumes milk and dairy products over a long period, the lactose builds up in their bodies and is eventually converted into fats. Do you know the long-term effects of the accumulation of excess fat in the body? Yes, you guessed it right, obesity. And, given that Labs are prone to obesity, you will end up having an obese Lab. Bread Bread is safe for consumption by dogs but only as an occasional treat. Therefore, when feeding bread to your Lab, do so in moderation. You may find that your Lab experiences some mild stomach upsets, nausea, and diarrhea after consuming cottage cheese. Pineapple As a fruit, pineapple is an ideal nutrient-dense snack for your pooch as it contains a high amount of vitamins, fiber, and minerals. Unfortunately, too much of it is not suitable for your dog. Excessive consumption of pineapples may give your Lab mild digestive issues, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Additionally, pineapples contain a high fruit sugar content, an excess of which may be converted into fats. Since Labs are prone to obesity, overconsumption of pineapples may cause extreme weight gain. Therefore, watch out for the amount you feed them! Additionally, almonds have high-calorie content and often expose your Lab to obesity. Raw meat contains multiple bacterial pathogens such as salmonella spp and E. Additionally, raw meat may contain tapeworms, among other parasites that can be harmful to your dog when ingested. Similarly, raw eggs contain salmonella spp and Avidin, an enzyme that inhibits the absorption of Vitamin B7 biotin , causing fur issues in your furry canine friend. Cat Food If you have both cats and dogs in your home, you may at times use cat food as a substitute for dog food. Since felines and canines have different nutritional needs, their foods are manufactured with varying dietary components. Therefore, if you make it a habit to feed your canine friend with cat food, he may end becoming obese. This is common for every Lab parent because your goal is to see him happy and healthy. However, monitor him for any signs that appear to persist and consult a vet if you are in doubt. Persin is present in almost every part of it, from the shell and the pit to the flesh, and once consumed, it causes severe vomiting and diarrhea. If consumed in large quantities, it can damage the heart and lung tissues. Another thing about avocados is the pit, which poses a choking hazard and can also cause intestinal blockage. If that happens, your lab will probably need surgery to have it removed. Both garlic and onions are members of the Allium family, and they contain a high amount of disulfides and sulfoxides, which are toxic to dogs. When consumed by dogs, they cause severe stomach upset and hemolytic anemia—they break down red blood cells leaving your Lab struggling for oxygen. Regardless of their form, whether cooked, raw, powdered, or blended, onions and garlic are highly toxic to your pup. When consumed, it causes severe stomach pains, high blood pressure, dry mouth, increased heart rate, seizures, and disorientation. Always check any foods that may contain nutmeg, such as baked goods, cereals, and granola bars, keeping them out of reach where possible. Macadamia nuts are known to be toxic to dogs. If your Lab consumes them, he may experience severe vomiting, tremors, muscle weakness, hyperthermia, depression, and paralysis of the hindquarters. As with nutmeg, macadamia nuts are often found in baked goods and cereals. Always check the ingredient lists before sharing your snacks with your dog, and keep them out of their reach in the pantry. Tomatoes Although ripe tomatoes are safe for your dog, green or unripe tomatoes can be dangerous. If you grow tomatoes at home, try to keep them high in a greenhouse or behind a netting to prevent your dog from plucking the unripe fruits from the plant. Grapes and Raisins Grapes and raisins are toxic to Labs, and when ingested, they reduce blood flow into the kidney. A reduction in blood flow can cause kidney failure, and if no medical attention is provided, you might lose your canine friend. Some signs of grape or raisin poisoning include severe dehydration, abdominal pain, vomiting, coma, and seizures. When eliminating grapes and raisins, also eliminate their derivatives such as alcohol. Since most of these foods are highly toxic to your Lab, you should seek immediate medical attention. Depending on the notable signs, you may consult your vet to guide you at home. Never attempt to induce vomiting if your pet has difficulties breathing or is choking. Therefore, keep a close eye on him if you suspect he has consumed any of these foods. If the condition is severe, you may need to leave your Lab in the clinic for close monitoring. Red: Dangerous or Poisonous These are the highly toxic foods your Lab should never consume. However, be cautious not to give your Lab cooked bones. There is also a problem with some large uncooked bones. Some of them are weighty and so hard that they can inflict dental damage to your pup. In some cases, these bones can crack or break their teeth, leading to potential infections and jaw pain. Caffeinated Beverages Never share your cup of coffee or tea with your Lab. With the high level of caffeine in both of these drinks, your dog will almost immediately feel the effects. Caffeinated drinks cause severe vomiting, hyperactivity, accelerated heartbeat, tremors, and seizures. A higher intake can cause heart and liver failure, which can ultimately be deadly. Chocolate is one of the most highly toxic foods for dogs since it contains caffeine and theobromine. As earlier mentioned, caffeine acts as a stimulant that causes hyperactivity and accelerates heartbeat, among other effects. Theobromine, on the other hand, is a diuretic and cardiac stimulant. Additionally, being a cardiac stimulant, theobromine increases the heart or irregular heartbeat rhythm, which can cause death. A small amount may not be fatal depending on his size, but it is not worth the risk. Therefore, always keep chocolate and chocolate products far away from your Lab. Although not toxic to humans, it is highly poisonous to dogs. You can find Xylitol in foods such as ketchup, baked foods, gums, candies, vitamin supplements, and toothpaste. When your Lab consumes food substances containing Xylitol, he can experience a rapid drop in blood sugar levels, severe seizures, and muscle weakness. If consumed in high amounts, Xylitol can cause liver damage or result in death. Raw Yeast Dough Raw yeast dough is highly unsafe for your Lab to consume. With massive ingestion of raw yeast dough, your Lab can quickly die. Corn on the Cob On its own, corn is safe for consumption by dogs. However, since accidents are bound to happen, and it is not uncommon to find that your canine friend has consumed raw yeast dough, cooked bones, chocolate, or a caffeinated drink. So, what should you do? Given the high level of toxicity from these foods, it might be a matter of life and death, and the faster you act, the safer your Lab will be. Your vet may advise you to induce vomiting before rushing him to the clinic in a bid to reduce the adverse effects. Conclusion We often give our dogs many foods without a second thought, such as table scraps or food they may grab from the counter. With some foods, such as dairy or pineapple, chances are your dog will suffer from an upset stomach, and you may need to clean up some diarrhea. However, foods like chocolate and alcohol are very toxic, and if your Labrador Retriever consumes them, you will need to seek immediate medical attention. You might have noticed this too if you have a Labrador. As a Labrador owner, it is difficult to resist sharing food with your Lab, when it looks at you with those cute hungry eyes pleading for food. Whatever you eat, it can be chocolates or pizzas or cakes. Your Lab always looks at you, for his little piece of share. But how far is it safe to feed your dog with human food? Some human foods may be fine for your dog. But not every food. Is it okay to feed him a piece of cake or a piece of bread? But there are certain foods that you should never give to your dog. Some human foods are not only unsafe for your dog but can also be potentially toxic for him. Out of the various human foods, there are some foods that you should never feed your Lab, and some human foods can be given with some precautions. Have a look at the list of foods to avoid for a Labrador. Dogs have become a part of our human lives and a part of our family. Because of this we even treat dogs like the way we treat humans. In spite of being a part of our family, you have to remember the fact they are a different species of life. Hence your dog metabolizes the food differently when compared with you. Is it easy for you to digest a large chunk of raw meat easily? But your dog can do it easily. Why Labradors? Foods that are harmful or not suitable for your Labrador are obviously not suited for every other dog breed too. But why special care is required with respect to Labradors? The reason for special care in feeding Labradors is due to their voracious eating habit. I have heard of Labradors that have eaten the most unsuitable things for them. I have heard of Labs that have eaten chocolates, sweets, leftover cooked bones and many kinds of human junk food too. As Labradors have an unending appetite, there is a greater chance that your dog might eat some wrong and unnecessary foods which can be harmful to its health. What Labradors should not eat? I will divide the list of foods that you should not feed your Labrador, for that matter any dog, into two categories. The first category includes foods that should not be fed at all in any case, as they could be potentially toxic to your dog. The second category includes foods that your Labrador should not eat, but if eaten in small amounts may not cause immediate health concerns. But this does not mean you can feed them. Your dog should not eat them too. What can labradors not eat? Have a look at the list below… 1. Alcohol Why should a dog be given something that is not made for its consumption? Humans consume alcohol for various reasons. But why should a dog drink alcohol? I have heard about some people who fed their dog with some amount of beer, which could be out of fun or due to ignorance. But it is important to remember that, it is not funny to feed your dog with alcohol, and dogs should never consume alcohol. Alcohol in any form which may be beer, wine, vodka or even hops, even ingested in small amount may cause ethanol poisoning in your dog. You may not feed alcohol directly to your dog, but in some cases, wine spills and alcohol within the reach of your dog can be the cause of alcohol toxicity in your dog. In such cases, you notice symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lack of coordination and tiredness in your dog. If your dog consumes alcohol in excess amounts, it can eventually lead to heart attack, lung failure, seizures and sometimes even death. Hence keep all forms of substances that contain alcohol away from the reach of your dog. This includes alcohol-based perfumes and cleaning products too. Your dog is too sensitive to the effects of caffeine when compared with humans. When i talk about caffeine, coffee and tea usually come to your mind. But caffeine is not only present in tea and coffee but also present in many drinks and other items your house. Hence any item that contains caffeine should be avoided for your dog. It can cause vomiting and diarrhea too. So, No caffeine for your dog. Chewing gum with Xylitol If your dog eats a small amount of sugared gum, it might cause a little digestive distress for him. But what if it consumes a chewing gum with xylitol? Xylitol is an artificial sweetener which is used in many sugar-free chewing gums. In case, your dog eats that gum, it can be very harmful to him. Yes, xylitol is very toxic for dogs. It can lead to a rapid lowering of blood sugar levels in your dog within 30 minutes of consuming it. Xylitol may be present in chewing gums, toothpaste, sugar-free foods, some baked goods and even some brands of peanut butter. Keep all such products away from your dog. Take more care regarding foods like peanut butter which your dog might eat usually. In severe cases, consuming xylitol can cause seizures and even liver failure in your dog. So be careful with xylitol. Grapes and Raisins This is another poisonous food for your dog, even in small amounts. Not even a few grapes or few raisins should be fed to your Labrador. Grapes can cause rapid kidney failure in your dog. If a dog is already dealing with kidney issues, feeding him grapes or raisins could be the worst thing that could ever happen to him. Always keep grapes and raisins away from your dog. Tell people around you to not feed them to dogs. As grapes being a healthy fruit, people usually might feed them unknowingly to their dogs, without knowing their toxic effects. Chocolate Your Labrador usually has some natural resistance towards eating some foods. Dogs have the natural capability of choosing foods to eat and foods to avoid. But what about chocolates? When you place some chocolates before your dog, there is a greater chance for your dog to consume them. Because your dog has taste buds and it can identify the taste of sweet. Your dog likes the taste of sweet just like us. But the chocolates we consume usually has the compound theobromine which is not suitable for your dog. It can be toxic and very dangerous for your dog in certain cases. The level of danger depends upon the type of chocolate your dog consumes. Whether it is dark chocolate or milk chocolate? Whether is taken on an empty stomach or taken along with food? The seriousness of the condition depends upon such factors. Whatever the factors may be, chocolates should not be fed to your dog. Eating chocolates can cause vomiting, diarrhea, severe digestive distress and sometimes even seizures too. I have heard people without proper knowledge who say that dogs can eat chocolates. If you come across such a person, tell him clearly that chocolates are not for dogs. Macadamia nuts Macadamia nuts are one of the tops human foods that should not be given to your dog at all. What about smaller quantities? Every dog is different with respect to the toxic effect of these nuts. The toxicity range is anywhere between 2 grams to 64 grams of the toxin per kg body weight of the dog. As the range is very large, it is difficult to access the toxicity effect of eating macadamia nuts in your dog. Hence it is better to never feed these nuts to your dog. These nuts are usually found in the houses, either separately or present in some foods like cookies. Some unidentified toxin present in these nuts is potentially toxic to your dog. Ingestion of these nuts by your dog could lead to vomiting, ataxia, elevated body temperature, and weakness along with depression. So keep this dangerous food away from your Labrador. Raw Yeast Dough This is another human food that can be extremely dangerous for your dog. Feeding your dog with unbaked dough can cause two major health concerns in your dog. The yeast which is already present in the dough activates and the dough expands in size. It can lead to a condition called GDV. This is a dangerous condition which is fatal for any dog. Secondly, raw yeast dough can cause alcohol poisoning in your dog. The yeast present in the food gets fermented and produces alcohol in this process. This alcohol produced is easily absorbed into the bloodstream which can be dangerous for your dog. This finishes the first category list of foods that are extremely toxic to your Labrador. Now have a look at the remaining list of foods that are although not extremely toxic but you should not feed them. Avocado The avocado fruit, the pits, its leaves and the plant are all toxic to dogs. Avocados contain a toxin called persin which is very poisonous to dogs. The toxin which is harmful to dogs is present in higher concentrations in the leaves, skin and pits of the avocado plant. But what about the flesh? The flesh contains the toxin in very low concentrations. Because of this reason some dog owners prefer feeding the flesh of avocado to their dogs. But the amount of persin that causes harm to your dog is actually not known exactly. Hence there is no necessity of feeding foods that include risk in eating them. Hence it is better to avoid avocados for your dog. Onions and Garlic Foods that belong to the allium family are considered to be unsuitable for dogs. Onions contain a compound called N-propyl disulfide, and this can be toxic to your dog. Even garlic contains thiosulphate which is toxic to your dog. But let me tell you my personal experience regarding feeding garlic and onions to dogs. The curries usually included onions and garlic too. But it did not affect the dog and the dog lived a healthy long life. Without any major health problems, he had lived for 16 years. But what about garlic? Is it so unsafe? Although garlic is usually unsafe for dogs, some pet owners and some studies suggest the usage of garlic to dogs which provide a list of wonderful benefits for your dog. Some studies even suggest using garlic as a supplement. It all depends upon the dosage of garlic and the duration of feeding garlic to the dog. I fed my Labrador with garlic to deal with the flea nuisance and it helped him a lot. In spite of the claimed benefits, a large quantity of garlic can be poisonous to your dog. Hence discuss with your vet if you want to administer garlic to your dog as a medicine for any specific reason. Milk Feeding milk to dogs is a controversial topic. I have seen dogs drinking milk without any side effects. But my dog gets diarrhea soon after drinking milk. Even some experts suggest feeding milk to dogs where are some are completely against feeding milk to dogs. But what is the truth? Is milk harmful to dogs? Yes, puppies do drink milk from their mothers before weaning. But after they get weaned, they stop producing lactase. And every dog is different in this case, because of this every dog reacts in a different manner after drinking milk and consuming other dairy products. The side effects of drinking milk are different in every dog. Some dogs might not show any digestive issues whereas some dogs might exhibit severe digestive problems. Actually there is no special reason for feeding milk to your dog. You can provide all the nutrients which milk offers from various other sources. Hence it is not necessary to feed milk to your dog. Cooked Bones There exists a lot of contradictory information regarding feeding bones to dogs. Feeding bones to your dog includes both health benefits and health risks too. All the risk depends upon the type of bone and size of bone that you feed your dog. Raw bones of the right type and right size are a good choice for giving it to your dog. But what about cooked bones? You should never feed cooked bones to your dog. The cooked chicken bones which are usually the table scraps break easily. They splinter and cause gum and digestive injuries which can be severe in some cases. So never give cooked bones to your dog. Cinnamon Cinnamon is found in some cookies and some cakes too. This food even though is not toxic for your dog, you should not feed it. Keep cinnamon in powdered form away from your dog. In case your dog inhales it, it might cause respiratory difficulty for him. Even though not toxic, cinnamon is not suitable for your dog. So it is good to avoid it. Nutmeg Nutmeg is a spice used in some cookies and cakes. It enhances the flavour of many foods but not suitable for your dog. Nutmeg has a compound called Myristicin that is toxic to your dog. If you have a large dog and if grabs a cookie with nutmeg in it, there might not be any severe consequences. But if your dog is a small one and if it steals 3 to 4 cookies, then it would surely be a problem for him. As nutmeg is toxic to your dog, possibly avoid all forms of food that contain this spice. Tomatoes Tomatoes are both okay in limit and toxic to your dog. Once my Labrador stole a big tomato from the vegetable basket and ate it before i could remove it. I was a little worried and it was then when i had studied about dogs eating tomatoes. Not all tomatoes are okay for your dog. Feeding a red ripe tomato is usually safe for your dog. It is a problem only when it is unripe and green in color. A green-colored tomato, usually which is unripe contains compounds like tomatine and solanine which are toxic to your dog. These toxins are usually present in green parts of the plant such as its leaves, stem and the unripe green tomatoes. Are ripe tomatoes okay to feed? Even excess feeding of ripe tomatoes can cause digestive distress for your dog. Hence you can feed the red ripe tomato only as an occasional treat and completely avoid the unripe green ones that are toxic for your furry friend. Almonds Some nuts are not suitable for your dog, whereas some nuts can be given in smaller quantities. If your dog eats one or two nuts that fell on the ground, it might not be an issue for concern. But if your dog eats almonds in more number, it can definitely cause an issue for your dog. Almonds could cause digestive strain and could induce vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and severe indigestion in your dog. The high-fat content in almonds could also cause issues like pancreatitis in your dog. Pancreatitis is a serious condition that needs immediate care. Hence it is better to avoid almonds to prevent these risky conditions. My Lab hates lemons, it does not prefer to eat them even if i force him to eat. So dogs usually have resistance to eating lemons. But this is not the case with every dog. I have seen dogs happily munching on lemons. But actually lemons or limes are toxic to your pet. The peels of lemon contain a substance called psoralen which is harmful to your dog. The peel when ingested can also cause digestive upset. Sometimes the effects may be more serious too. Then what about the juice of the fruit? Even though licking a few drops of juice may not harm your dog. This is because of the acidic nature of the citrus fruit. It can cause both vomiting and diarrhea in your dog. As this fruit even does not provide any immense nutritional benefit for your dog, it is better to skip feeding lemon and lime to your dog. Corn on the cob Some dogs are allergic to corn, but some dogs happily eat corn. Feeding your dog with a few tablespoons of corn is okay. Your dog gets all the vitamins, minerals and antioxidants present in the corn. Corn in moderation sometimes is not an issue for your dog. But what about corn along with the cob? I say, always No. Do you think your dog has the capacity to digest the cob as well? Not at all. Your dog cannot digest the cob and there is a chance of intestinal blockage if he swallows the chunks of cob. Many such cases require veterinary assistance along with a surgery to be performed to remove those indigestible chunks. Remember, never give the cob to your dog. Ice cream and sugars Dogs have taste buds and they are attracted to sugars and foods like ice creams just like us. But firstly, your dog does not need sugar for its body. Secondly, ice cream contains milk and your dog cannot digest it properly. Hence feeding ice cream may cause stomach upset in your dog. It may also lead to diarrhea, vomiting and gas formation. Various health issues such as lowered immunity, digestive issues, weight gain, gum problems and various other health problems may arise. A little bit of sugar or ice cream may not harm your dog excessively. Salt Your dog needs sodium for proper cellular function. But you do not have to add salt in its diet to supply the essential sodium for him. Foods that your dog usually eats such as meat, poultry, fish, and eggs are good sources of sodium. Even the commercially prepared foods have the required amounts of sodium for your dog. Hence there is no necessity to feed additional salt to your dog. This additional or excessive salt can be harmful to your dog. It can lead to salt poisoning in your dog. Excessive salt consumption can make your dog extremely thirsty. It may lead to vomiting and diarrhea. Too much salt can finally lead to severe dehydration which can even be fatal to your dog. Hence stop giving chips and other salty foods to your dog. As a loving dog owner, it is difficult to resist giving food to your dog, after looking at its hungry eyes. I have seen people feeding pizzas, sandwiches and even cakes to their dogs while eating them. But junk food which is made for humans to eat is not suitable for your dog. If the junk food that you eat is causing health damage to you, imagine what effects it could have if you feed it to your dog? Unnecessary treats and human junk food can cause serious health complications for your dog such as weight gain, obesity, heart disease and even cancer. Some ingredients such as onions present in the human food could also pose a potential risk to your dog if eaten. Avoid the habit of human junk food as treats for your dog. Research over the past decade shows that most dog owners unintentionally feed poisonous foods to their pets due to a lack of knowledge, as highlighted in this report on household food items toxic to dogs and cats. Therefore, if this article helps save just one Lab, I will be more than happy. Mild alcohol poisoning can cause a dangerous drop in blood sugar, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle incoordination, and poor breathing. Severe cases involve seizures, respiratory failure, and death can occur 12 to 24 hours after ingesting. Alcohol has a similar effect on dogs that it has on humans in that it affects the liver and brain. However, the slightest amount of alcohol can be deadly for your Lab. Remember to these out of reach. If you grow fruit at home, such as apples, be careful once the fruit has fallen from the tree and starts to decompose as it produces ethanol alcohol. There was a sad case of ethanol intoxication from the ingestion of massive rotten apples by a dog who died 48 hours later. Never leave your Labrador Retriever unsupervised where they can have free access to fruit. Avocado Labradors can not eat avocado as it is toxic to dogs. The skin, leaves, pit, and bark of avocados are all poisonous as they contain persin, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, and difficulty breathing. Severe cases of poisoning can cause oxygen deprivation and can lead to death. The high-fat content of this fruit can also lead to pancreatitis, and the avocado pit is a choking hazard. If you grow avocados at home, remember to keep your dog away from the plants. Black Walnuts Labradors should not eat black walnuts as they are toxic to dogs due to an unknown toxin. Symptoms include vomiting, restlessness, panting, fever, and lack of coordination. Severe cases of walnut poisoning can result in seizures, tremors, liver failure, and the death of your Lab. Another danger is if old walnuts have been lying on the ground and turned moldy, the mold becomes an additional poison, and you have double trouble ahead. Although some nuts are okay for Labradors to eat, such as cashews or almonds, you must give them in moderation due to their high fat content. Nuts can easily cause a stomach upset in dogs, and feeding your Lab foods high in fat content can also lead to pancreatitis or obesity. Blue Cheese Labradors cannot eat blue cheese, such as blue stilton. The fungus used to make blue cheese contains a substance called roquefortine C, which is toxic if ingested by your dog. If blue cheese is eaten in large doses, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea, high temperature, tremors, twitching, and seizures. However, other cheese, such as mild cheddar, is safe for dogs to eat, but some Labs may find it difficult to break down like other dairy products. This is known as lactose intolerance. All dairy products contain different amounts of lactose. Whether your Lab can enjoy small pieces of safe cheese comes down to the individual dog. Remember, too, that foods high in fat can cause a stomach upset. For example, my dog enjoys small pieces of cheddar as a treat, an occasional lick of milk, and plain or Greek yogurt added to her food as a topping. However, she cannot tolerate even an iota of heavy cream, which makes her sick. Caffeine Tea, Coffee, etc. Labradors cannot drink tea or coffee as they contain caffeine which is toxic to dogs. Ingestion of caffeine can be fatal in severe cases as it overstimulates the nervous system, causing a fast heartbeat and leading to death. Less severe symptoms include excessive thirst, vomiting, and tremors. Your Lab will be fine if he just has a lick or two of your drink. However, several deaths of dogs have occurred due to caffeine overdose. Keep your Lab away from coffee, tea, cocoa, chocolate, colas, and energy drinks. Caffeine is also present in some supplements, cold medicines, and painkillers. This report details the sad case of a Yorkshire Terrier who died from ingesting an over-the-counter caffeine supplement. Cherries Labradors can eat the flesh of cherries. However, they should not eat cherry pits, stems, and leaves as they contain cyanide which is toxic. When eaten in large amounts, cyanide poisoning prevents your Lab from getting enough oxygen, and shock and death can occur in critical cases. Symptoms are dilated pupils, bright red gums, and breathing difficulties. Call your vet immediately, as they may advise you to induce vomiting. Additionally, the pit is a choking hazard and, if swallowed, can cause a blockage. Chocolate and Cocoa Labradors can not eat chocolate as it is poisonous. Chocolate poisoning can cause vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, heart problems, tremors, seizures, and death, depending on the amount consumed and its potency. The most toxic types are dark and unsweetened baking chocolate — the darker it gets, the more poisonous due to the concentrated cacao solids. Additionally, beware of other chocolate products that contain different toxins, such as macadamia nuts, raisins, or xylitol. Garlic Labradors can not eat garlic as it is poisonous to dogs. Eating a large amount of garlic will rupture their red blood cells, which leads to anemia. Symptoms of garlic poisoning include rapid breathing, lethargy, weakness, jaundice, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, stomach pain, and loss of appetite. However, your doggo would need to eat quite a lot to get very sick, and fatalities are rare. Also, be aware that signs of garlic poisoning can be delayed and may not be apparent until several days later. Some dogs are also more sensitive than others. Grapes and Raisins Labradors can not eat grapes. This also includes other dried variants like raisins, sultanas, and currants. Even a tiny amount of grapes or raisins can cause rapid kidney failure in dogs. On rare occasions, death can occur, depending on the quantity consumed. Scientists have not discovered the source of the toxicity and the exact dosage is unknown. However, some dogs have died from just a handful of raisins, whereas others have survived after eating a much larger amount. Vomiting within 24 hours of ingestion is typical. Look out for excessive thirst and very little pee. Diarrhea, lethargy, and abdominal pain may also occur. Beware of any foods containing grape extracts, such as grape juice, breakfast cereals, trail mix, raisin cereal, raisin bread, and baked foods like raisin cookies or scones. These are all potential sources of poison to your Labrador. The toxic element of the plant is still unknown. If you suspect your dog has eaten hops, symptoms to look out for are malignant hyperthermia which can be life-threatening , a fast heartbeat, panting, vomiting, and stomach pain. In severe cases, death can occur. Hops are the cone-shaped flowers of the hop plant and are used in the process of brewing beer. They are used as a flavoring in beer and as a stabilizer. If you are a home-brew hobbyist, you must keep hops out of the reach of your Labrador, whether you use dried flowers or pellets. Breeds predisposed to malignant hyperthermia , such as the Labrador Retriever may be more prone to toxicity. Horse Chestnuts Conkers Labradors cannot eat horse chestnuts also known as conkers as they contain a poison called aesculin, which is found in all parts of the tree, including the leaves. Ripened conkers fall to the ground in late summer and autumn, and they are not to be confused with the unrelated edible sweet American chestnut. Although conkers are toxic to Labradors, they would have to eat several to suffer from any severe poisoning. Nevertheless, if you think your Labrador may have eaten some conkers, symptoms to be aware of are severe vomiting and diarrhea, drooling, increased thirst, restlessness, and convulsions. Symptoms can occur as soon as one hour after ingesting or may even be delayed for up to two days. Macadamia Nuts Macadamia nuts are poisonous for Labradors and, therefore, unsafe to eat. The cause of the toxicity remains unknown, but just a handful of raw or roasted macadamia nuts can make your dog quite sick. Vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, hyperthermia, and tremors are common symptoms. Signs and symptoms usually appear within 12 hours of ingestion. If you suspect your Lab has eaten some, you must take him to the vet as a precaution. Beware of other foods containing macadamia nuts, such as baked goods, cookies, trail mix, and muffins. Moldy Food Moldy foodstuffs such as bread, cheese, fruit, and other decaying produce are toxic for your Labrador Retriever. Food mold is a fungus that grows on aged food and, if eaten, can make your dog very ill. The poisonous substances are known as mycotoxins. Symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, incoordination, tremors, high temperature, seizures, and death in acute cases. The main dangers to be aware of are if your Lab eats garbage outside, such as moldy fruit or nuts, gets into a compost heap, or manages to get into the household trash. Mushrooms Wild Labradors should not eat wild mushrooms as they can be toxic. Symptoms of mushroom poisoning in dogs depend on the species eaten. Look out for vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, seizures, lethargy, and weakness. Coma, liver failure, and eventual death can occur. There are thousands of wild mushroom species, and while only a small number are known to be poisonous, should your dog eat a toxic one, it could make him extremely ill. Severe cases of mushroom poisoning can prove fatal. Some mushroom toxins will affect your Lab within minutes, while others will not produce signs for up to 24 hours. If possible, take a mushroom sample to the vets, who can help decide the best treatment depending on the poison. A small amount of washed white mushrooms from the store are generally safe, such as the white button or Portobello varieties. Nutmeg Although nutmeg is a popular spice used to flavor various sweet and savory dishes, it should not be ingested by your Labrador as it contains a toxin called myristicin. Mild stomach upset could occur if your Lab were to eat a small amount of nutmeg, and if a very large amount were consumed, myristicin toxicity can cause symptoms such as dry mouth, abdominal pain, disorientation, fast heartbeat, high blood pressure, and seizures. Although your Labrador would need to consume a considerable amount of nutmeg to suffer serious effects, I thought it would be wise to include it here, just in case your dog happens to find his way into a jar of ground nutmeg! Nutmeg is also hallucinogenic, so eating a large amount of it could be a scary experience for your dog. Onions, Shallots, Leeks, and Chives Labradors should never eat onions, shallots, leeks, and chives as they are poisonous if consumed in large amounts. Eating onions and other Allium foods can cause your Lab to suffer from anemia due to ruptured red blood cells. In serious cases, an increased heart rate, and often death can occur. Veterinarians may need to perform a blood transfusion to try to save your dog. Milder symptoms to look out for include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and gastroenteritis. These foods belong to the Allium family like garlic and are popular kitchen staples used to season many dishes. They inflame the GI tract starting with the mouth causing excessive drooling. Symptoms of the poisoning may have a delayed onset which you need to be aware of. Potato Raw or Green White potatoes belong to the nightshade family of vegetables which contain a compound called solanine that is poisonous to some dogs. Green tomatoes are also in this group. Solanine is produced as a natural defense to deter insects. Raw or green potato is toxic to your Labrador, although a large quantity would need to be eaten to cause serious problems. If your Lab consumes a large amount of solanine, his nervous system may become affected and will not function correctly. Symptoms of potato poisoning are vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, confusion, and a slow heart rate. It is okay to feed your Labrador a small amount of cooked potato as cooking drastically reduces the levels of solanine. If you have a vegetable garden, remember to keep your dog away. Rhubarb Leaves Rhubarb leaves are poisonous to Labradors as they contain soluble oxalate crystals, however, an extremely large quantity would have to be consumed to cause the poisoning. But the stalk of the rhubarb plant is safe for your Labrador in small quantities and can be good if he has constipation. Symptoms of this type of poisoning in dogs include changes in thirst, drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, tremors, and bloody urine. Renal failure can occur in extreme cases. You must be careful if you grow rhubarb at home and ensure your Labrador is always supervised. Too much salt intake in dogs results in vomiting within several hours of ingestion. Symptoms can progress to weakness, diarrhea, muscle tremors, and seizures. Excessive thirst or urination may occur and potential damage can be caused to the kidneys. Salt poisoning is a concern as it can cause death in serious cases if not caught in time. As salt poisoning is often directly related to dehydration make sure your dog has access to fresh water at all times. Tomato Green Green tomatoes should be avoided as they are a dangerous food to Labradors if consumed in large quantities. While the ripened red fruit of the tomato is generally considered safe for dogs, the green parts of the plant stems and vines , as well as unripened tomatoes should not be eaten. Green tomatoes contain a toxic substance called solanine also found in raw or green potatoes which can cause severe stomach upset, muscle weakness, tremors, heart problems, difficulty breathing, and possibly seizures. If you grow tomato plants in your garden, be sure to fence it off preventing your dog access. Xylitol is a sugar alcohol mainly used as an artificial sweetener that is not safe for your Labrador. It is found hidden in sweet candies, mints, chewing gum, bread, jams, cookies, other baked goods, and diet foods. If enough xylitol is consumed it can cause life-threatening low blood sugar and leads to acute liver failure. Symptoms can occur within 30 minutes of ingestion and include vomiting, lethargy, coordination problems, seizures, and even coma. Although Labradors can eat peanut butter, be aware that some brands contain xylitol and always check the label first or buy an organic brand. Yeast Dough When yeast dough ferments, it produces alcohol that can lead to alcohol poisoning and ultimately the death of your Labrador. In addition to this, raw bread dough needs to rise and if your Lab eats it, his stomach will act as an oven causing the yeast dough to rise. The dough then swells inside, and as it expands, it causes a bowel obstruction or a bloated stomach which causes immense pain, especially if the stomach twists. This then becomes a life-threatening emergency requiring abdominal surgery. Obvious signs are a distended abdomen and your lab may also suffer from difficulty breathing, retching, weakness, collapse, and shock. If you suspect your dog may have eaten something toxic, you must take emergency action by contacting your veterinarian for advice. Two other helpful resources are also available 24 hours a day. Safely remove any remaining toxic food from their reach. Check to make sure your dog is breathing normally and acting okay otherwise. Collect a sample of the foodstuff and packaging as you may need the information when you talk to your veterinarian or a Pet Poison Helpline expert. Also, never induce vomiting or give hydrogen peroxide to your dog without talking to your vet or Pet Poison Helpline first. Get help. From your experience, what is the most common food involved in accidental ingestion in dogs that causes poisoning that you see in your practice? Xylitol appears to be in so many products these days. Have you witnessed any cases of xylitol poisoning? One I remember was a dog presented to the emergency clinic after having eaten some sort of diet food with xylitol in it. He was brought in because he had a seizure at home. We found his blood sugar was very low. He ended up recovering well after being treated for a few days in the hospital. The best thing to do if you think your dog has ingested something toxic is to call an animal poison control center immediately. These people are amazing! Tell the veterinarian at the poison control center what your dog ingested and how much he got. They will give you specific instructions on what to do next. What have you found to be the most prevalent reason for dogs ingesting toxic foodstuffs? What is your best tip to poison-proof a home? Use child-proof cabinet locks if your dog is very crafty. Keep your garbage containers in a locked cabinet or pantry. Although I make sure my dog has a healthy, well-balanced diet, I like to give her some human food either as treats or as a topping in her food bowl to change things up for her. So, what human foods can Labradors eat? These include proteins such as lean meats and fish, some fruits and vegetables, dairy foods, and plain cooked rice and pasta. Ensure the foods you give your dog are safe, cooked, lean, and plain, with no salt or seasoning. Below is a brief synopsis of the foodstuffs that are safe for your dog to eat. Lean Meats Labradors can eat lean cuts of cooked meat as long as all the visible fat is removed. My dog enjoys chicken, turkey, pork, beef, and lamb. Avoid processed meats like bacon, sausage, and ham due to their high levels of salt or seasoning. Make sure that there are no bones in the meat before you feed it to your dog as cooked bones are dangerous. If you like to give your Lab a bone make sure it is raw and larger than his muzzle, such as a large beef shank bone. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Slices of apples or bananas make tasty treats for your dog. Berries such as strawberries and raspberries are also fine and you can even freeze them in summer to help keep them cool. You can also feed your Lab apricot, nectarines, peaches, and plums but you must take out any seeds or pits as these contain cyanide and can cause poisoning if eaten in large amounts. Most vegetables should be cooked as your dog will find them easier to digest, although raw carrots and green beans are fine. Vegetables are a healthier option than fruits due to their lower sugar content. To discover exactly what vegetables Labradors can eat, check out this article. Cooked Rice and Pasta Dogs can eat cooked plain rice and cooked pasta. Cooked, plain white rice can be a good option if your Lab has an upset stomach as it is easy to digest and quick to prepare. Dairy Products Dairy products, such as cheese, milk, or plain yogurt, are generally safe for Labradors as long as they are fed in very small quantities. Eating too much dairy can cause diarrhea or vomiting in some dogs if they are lactose intolerant as they cannot break down the sugars in these foods. As a special treat for my dog, I like to give her fresh salmon which she adores. There have been some concerns about longer-living species of fish such as tuna and mackerel containing higher levels of mercury, so if you choose these types, only occasionally feed a small amount. Are you looking to buy something for your dog? Make sure to check out my favorite dog gear below. You might have gone through this process a few times, eating very healthfully sometimes, eating more junk than you care to admit at others. The fact is, you have a choice about what you feed yourself. You can choose what, when, and where you eat. Even just a little bit of chocolate, especially dark chocolate, can cause diarrhea and vomiting. A large amount can cause seizures, irregular heart function, and even death. Every part of the fruit has a strain of fatty acid called persin, which is toxic to your pup in large quantities. Onions and Garlic. Staples in the human diet, these beloved veggies can cause anemia in your dog by killing her red blood cells. Even a little bit can be detrimental to her health. Grapes and Raisins. Eating this seemingly innocuous fruit in either the fresh or dried form can cause kidney failure in dogs. Milk and other Dairy Products. While dogs can drink milk from their mothers, any other type of dairy cow, goat, etc. Macadamia Nuts. Sugary foods and drinks. The same thing will happen to her that happens to people when they ingest too much sugar: weight gain, tooth decay, and even diabetes. It contains a stimulant that is toxic to dogs. While you may enjoy a morning cup of joe, your dog should stick to tried-and-true water. Yeast dough. So the next time you make a homemade pizza, avoid giving those leftover dough bits to your pooch! Too much salt can lead to dehydration and even sodium ion poisoning. While a little bit of salt is fine, be aware of how much your dog ingests, to keep the quantity at a minimum. But just as certain foods affect people different ways, the same happens with dogs. Signs of poisoning or an allergic reaction include vomiting, muscle shakes, fever, intense scratching, weakness in the limbs, diarrhea, breathing problems, and sluggishness. If your dog shows any of these symptoms, get him to the vet immediately. By avoiding these foods, your dog will automatically be happier and healthier. And with an overall healthy diet and regular exercise, your pup will definitely thank you. If you have any questions about specific foods not mentioned in this article, please call us. If your pet is experiencing signs of poisoning or allergic reaction, seek emergency care immediately. Thank you for submitting the form. Though it's considered a healthy fat for humans, for dogs, they are affected by a toxin in avocado called persin, which can be poisonous. Caffeinated beverages including tea can turn your dog reckless, including muscle twitches, feeling heavy, fast breathing - and can be potentially fatal. Onion, Garlic and Chives Whilst the above can bring rich flavour to many human-based meals, think of your dog as a creature of simple tastes. Stick to bite-sized dog treats instead. Alcohol and yeast Alcohol and yeast such as bread can be poisonous to dogs, so think of them as your children — no beverages from the top shelf! Cooked bones e. It's important to make sure you are feeding your dog only the best! Image: Getty. Dairy, including chocolate Come dessert time, your dog may be looking up at with their big eyes ready for a lick of ice cream, a square of chocolate, or the remainder of the milk in your cereal bowl. Unfortunately like many humans, dogs are lactose intolerant which leads to diarrhoea and stomach problems, meaning dairy is off the table and bowl. Bacon and other fatty meats While many dog owners may have been guilty of slipping their dog some bacon, ham or chops for being a 'very good dog', this is one habit that should be broken, fast. Fatty meats can lead to very sore stomachs and pancreatitis in dogs, which can be very painful. Raw meat and eggs While there may be those who subscribe to raw meat diets, on a general scale, vets for animal bodies such as the RSPCA or The Human Society discourage feeding dogs raw meat and eggs, which can lead to salmonella poisoning, e coli infections, parasites and skin conditions. Handing your dog one of your chips or salty snacks is no good either — the high sodium content can lead to thirst and dehydration. Stick to doggo treats instead — your pup will be none the wiser! Mushroom Toxic mushroom ingestion in dogs can lead to liver failure, and even death. Corn on the cob Many of those with dogs will know they can be extremely food-motivated, and therefore not know when to stop when it comes to dinnertime. A corn on the cob is not safe, as overly enthusiastic hounds may look to swallow it whole, which can get lodged in their intestines. Make sure to give them plain kernels like you would a small child instead. What if my dog accidentally has these foods? If your dog does accidentally ingest any of the foods above, you should immediately contact your local vet or animal hospital for treatment. A healthy dog is a happy dog! What human foods can my dog eat?

Breed and coat type Dogs have a variety of coat textures, including short, long, curly, wiry or double coats. Below are some examples of coat types and textures, and what shampoo to use for each. Short-coated breeds: Dogs with short hair, like boxers and dalmatians, generally have low-maintenance coats but they can still benefit from shampoos that gently cleanse while maintaining the natural oils of the skin, according to Satchu. For short-haired dogs, consider shampoos with moisturizing ingredients like oatmeal or aloe vera. Long-coated breeds: These include Afghan hounds and Yorkshire terriers, and often require more frequent grooming to prevent the hair from tangling but no more than once every two weeks, according to our experts. Shampoos with conditioning and hydrating ingredients like shea butter and oatmeal help detangle hair to make grooming easier and keep the coat looking sleek, says Satchu. Double-coated breeds: Breeds with double coats, like huskies, samoyeds and golden retrievers, should use a shampoo that helps manage shedding to keep their undercoat healthy. Look for shampoos with omega fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6, for example to increase coat health and reduce excessive shedding, according to Satchu. White-coated breeds: If your dog has a white coat, they will benefit from shampoos that are labeled as coat color brighteners, which contain optical brighteners to make the coat appear whiter and more vibrant, according to Satchu. Some shampoos are also designed to enhance and maintain the colors of other coat types, including black coats or those with unique patterns. Ingredients You should always use shampoos specifically formulated for dogs because human-grade formulas are more likely to cause skin irritation, says Satchu. Generally, look for ingredients like aloe vera or colloidal oatmeal consisting of finely ground oats , which are gentle, hydrating and have soothing properties, according to our experts. And, because dogs have extremely sensitive noses, you should also avoid heavy fragrances in their shampoo, according to Rona. Skin sensitivities and allergies Some breeds, like bulldogs and shar peis, are more prone to skin sensitivities and allergies, according to Satchu. These breeds will benefit from hypoallergenic oatmeal- or aloe vera-based shampoos that are specifically formulated for sensitive skin. If your dog has skin irritation, infections or inflammation, you should talk to your veterinarian for a medicated shampoo recommendation, according to Mayhew. How often should you shampoo your dog? Experts recommend bathing your dog at least once every three months , but many breeds may require more frequent baths depending on how much time they spend outdoors or any skin or coat problems they might have, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Brush your dog before and after bathing. For long-coated breeds specifically, you should always brush your dog before bathing to prevent matting, according to Mayhew. After shampooing, use a cream rinse or conditioner. Avoid using human shampoo or other products not intended for dogs as they can disrupt their natural pH, according to experts. Use a detangling spray after bathing, especially if your dog has a long or thick coat that gets easily tangled. Poodle Shampoo and Coat Products Overview For a shampoo to be one of the best for a Poodle, it must be formulated for this breed's particular needs. Since the Poodle has a single coat of curly hair and not a thick double-coat of fur as many other breeds have , being sure to choose the right shampoo is vital for both skin and coat health. In addition, with Poodles being found in such an array of colors, you'll want to use specific shampoo formulas if your Poodle's coat is looking dulled or stained. Here, we'll cover shampoo, conditioner, finishing sprays, and leave-ins, so that your Poodle can look as beautiful as possible while avoiding common skin issues seen with inferior products. Dyeing the coat with chemicals for better balance or to enrich colors can be exceedingly drying and there are much better ways to bring out natural color on a Poodle. Elements of the Best Shampoos When you have a breed with hair as opposed to fur, there are particular challenges. In addition, skin and coat go hand-in-hand, so every grooming product that you use on the coat must be healthy for the skin as well. A great shampoo should have: Proper pH balance. This should be in the 6. No soaping agents. You may think that a dog shampoo should automatically contain soap and often when speaking, soap and shampoo are used interchangeably; however, this can be exceedingly drying to the skin and strip the cuticles. No chemicals, parabens, sulfate , phthalate , or phosphate, all of which can be terribly detrimental. Be effective enough to cleanse a Poodle's water resistant coat. In addition, choosing the right shampoo can offers other benefits as well: Target and resolve a Poodle's individual needs including skin issues such as itching, rash, and dryness. Since Poodles can have high body oil production which can create an odd smell, a shampoo can offer a long-lasting pleasant fragrance. Enhance coloring. Most Poodles fade as they mature; however, the coat can appear duller than it should and also hold in stains; both of which blocks the puppy or dog's natural beauty. If a Poodle is struggling with moderate to severe skin issues: The right specialty or medicated shampoo can resolve such things as allergy-related issues, and skin infection including yeast, bacterial, and fungi. Tilli, photo courtesy of Candy Evans Poodle Colors and Particular Shampooing Needs As you probably know, the Poodle coat lightens as the dog matures due to the fading gene. However, this should not be mistaken for other issues. Black Poodles can develop a reddish tint known as sunburning due to sun exposure. With all colors, Poodles can have hair that's been affected by the elements that cause a dulling. It is not uncommon for this to be in some some areas of the coat, causing an unbalanced appearance. For others, it will be full-body. Light colored Poodles often have staining. This is from months or years of particle debris and outside exposure gradually staining the hairs without being properly removed during bathing. As you probably know, the Poodle coat lightens as the dog matures due to the fading gene. It is not uncommon for this to be in just some areas of the coat, causing an unbalanced appearance. List of Shampoos and What They Can Do Black color enhancer shampoo - It can be tricky to keep a black Poodle super black; however, if a Poodle is genetically black, the right shampoo can bring back a deep, dark, shiny black coat. But, steer clear of shampoos that contain dyes. The shampoo must be able to remove stains that may be embedded into hair cuticles. As those are being drawn out, natural optical brighteners will enhance light colors, allowing them to shine and sparkle. Oatmeal and Aloe - If you choose a quality brand, this can be one of the best shampoos to prevent dry skin and resolve skin issues commonly seen with the Poodle breed. Eucalyptus and Peppermint - Is great for relieving moderate to severe issues that respond to cooling sensations. Orange Peel - Is fantastic for removing stains and for calming skin issues. Allergy shampoo - Many owners search for medicated shampoos when their Poodle is suffering from severe allergies with excessively dry skin, rashes, hot spots, and itching. However, chemicals can just exasperate problems. A really great allergy shampoo for Poodles will contain natural ingredients such as neem, aloe, bentonite clay, and shea butter to immediately offer relief and healing. Recommended Shampoos Keeping in mind that the shampoo you use on your Poodle must be correctly pH balanced, be free of the many ingredients that can be detrimental to a Poodle's skin and coat, and should only contain all-natural ingredients to meet a Poodle's particular needs, these are all fantastic choices. First, let's look at color enhancing shampoos. We are steering clear of dyes that can be horrible on the skin, and instead looking to all-natural ingredients that help bring out a Poodle's true color. You'll find that Earthbath's coat brightener shampoo is particularly gentle due to lavender oil which is excellent for a dog's skin. Recommended shampoos are below. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. On mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. Next, let's cover a basic, essential shampoo for Poodles and also those that help with certain issues common to the Poodle breed. The basic everyweek shampoo must be able to effectively remove accumulated body oils without stripping the cuticles. It will need to be strong enough to be worked through the coat yet gentle enough to pamper the skin. And it must be able to be properly rinsed away without leaving any residue. A specialty shampoo must be able to quickly treat issues that a Poodle may be contending with. One of the biggest problems seen with Poodles is dry, itchy skin. If not properly treated, this can quickly spiral into more severe issues such as sores, hot spots, and even thinning coat. If a Poodle is having a strong allergic reaction, there can also be localized swelling. There are certain all-natural ingredients that can be quite effective in resolving these sorts of issues, including the above mentioned neem, aloe, colloidal oatmeal, almond, bentonite clay, and shea butter. Medicated Shampoos for Poodles Certain conditions can be treated with canine medicated shampoos. This includes: Mites and mange: There are several types of mite infections and mange also called red mange, demodectic mange, or follicular mange is caused by one mite in particular, the demodex canis. Some mites are very contagious and infestation can be contracted by coming into contact with another dog that is infected. With the case of mange, a certain number of these mites are always living in a dog's hair follicles but due to a weakened immune system or other elements, the number of the mites may increase or a Poodle may have a reaction to them. Signs of mites include intense itching, hair loss, bald spots, skin scabbing, and sores. Skin infections: There are several types of skin infections that can occur with Poodles including yeast, fungal, and bacterial. Signs may vary; however there is typically an odd odor, and with yeast infections this may be a sour-type smell. Severe allergy reactions: General allergy issues can be effectively treated with the aforementioned oatmeal and aloe shampoo. However, some Poodles can have an intense issue that requires additional treatment. One method that can be very helpful is to use a concentrated spray. Recommended medicated shampoos and hot spot sprays are below. Shampooing Tips 1 Take note if the shampoo calls out for it to be diluted with water; this is common with canine shampoos. If you see the word 'concentrated' and a ratio number such as , the first number refers to the water and the second number refers to the product. For example, 10 parts water to 1 part shampoo. And since the Poodle has a water resistant coat, it can take longer to wet the coat down than it would with other breeds. Using a spray nozzle is the easiest method, and you'll want to take the time to saturate the coat before adding shampoo. The right grooming product can bring about amazing results; however, shampoo is meant to be massaged in and then removed. If it is not rinsed out, it will get in the way of conditioner more info ahead and residue can cake up which blocks proper air flow. Bambi, photo courtesy of Veronica The Importance of Conditioners Even if you are using one of the best shampoos possible, if it is used alone, you may have less than desirable results. This is because during the shampooing process, hair follicles open up. It could be compared to a flower in which the petals unfold. In this state, a Poodle's coat is primed to receive a coat conditioner which will be able to penetrate the hairs and work to flatten the cuticles, resulting in strong, resilient hairs. The Importance of a Leave-in Spray No matter how beneficial the shampoo and conditioner, these will only be used every few weeks every 3 weeks is recommended. So, what about all of the other days? Dogs are barraged with elements that will affect the coat. A good leave-in spritz can do the following: Protect the coat from breakage. Typically the culprit is contact friction, in which hairs are lightly but continually rubbed, often leading to split ends. Offer a barrier against arid air in the winter and sun exposure in the summertime; both of which can strip the coat of moisture. If your Poodle spends a lot of time outside in the summer, a leave-in coat spray can also offer the benefit of a sunscreen. Repel fine particle debris including airborne allergens. Keep both skin and coat moisturized, healthy, and shiny. Allow a Poodle to smell nice and clean in between baths. Help keep mats and tangles away. And a good finishing spray can add body and texture to Poodles whose coats appear limp. Tips: Once you have your chosen leave-in product, use this on a regular basis. Most Poodles do well with every 2 to 3 days. If you have a quality product, all you need is a light misting. Overdoing things can lead to heavy buildup and weigh hairs down. Use the coat spray when you brush you Poodle. Brushing a dry coat often leads to damage. Work in sections, misting as you go. Recommend coat sprays for Poodles are below. Excellent for fur that easily mats. Cons .Pros A little bit of product goes a long way Great moisturizer. Using human shampoo on your poodle is not recommended. But, finding the right shampoo for your furry friend is worth investing the time in. Here are some reasons why you should refrain from using human shampoo on your poodle. PH Balance. Humans and dogs have different pH balances. Using human shampoo can leave poodles skin dry, flaky, and more vulnerable to parasites and bacteria. Here is a little guide that will help you better navigate choosing a shampoo that will be best for your furry friend. General Purpose. A general-purpose shampoo is ideal for routine bathtime, made with natural ingredients, and is gentle and moisturizing enough for routine use. Puppy Shampoo. Poodle pups have extra sensitive skin, so shampoo should be tear-free, soap-free, soothing, and gentle. Color Enhancing. Due to natural oils, sometimes our furry friends may not smell the freshest. Luckily a lot of shampoos can help with this, and there are a lot on the market that will make your poodle smell great naturally without any strong perfumes. Flea and Tick. Anti Fungal. Yeast infections happen, and if your poodle is experiencing one, an antifungal shampoo will provide relief from the pain and burning. Medicated shampoos are made for itchy or irritated skin, and these shampoos are typically specific for allergies versus infections. Shedding Control. Again, not a huge problem many poodles will experience, but some females do experience shedding, and certain shampoos can help with this. Using a conditioner on your poodle is great for their curls. When fur becomes matted and difficult to brush through, this can be very painful for poodles. Poodle puppies only need to be bathed about once a month to avoid ridding them of natural protective lipid layers. The kitchen sink or a small basin is ideal for a poodle pups bath. When bathing your poodle pup, avoid washing the head. Make the bath as enjoyable as you can so that puppies will be excited for a bath in the future. After shampooing and rinsing your puppy, wrap him or her up in a towel after to stay warm. Bathing an Adult Poodle An adult poodle is going to require a bath roughly every three weeks. Before bathing your poodle, brush the coat gently to remove any tangles. Next, run warm water in the bathtub and help your dog into the bathtub to avoid them slipping. Wet the coat thoroughly, and begin to apply shampoo. Start at the head and work down the neck, black, and to the tail. Next, get the sides, stomach, legs, and feet. When shampoo residue builds up can make fur appear dull and cause irritation. Lastly, condition if necessary, though a lot of products are 2-in-1 formulas which make bathtime that much quicker. Remember to keep bath time as fun and enjoyable as possible. This will ensure future baths will be simple and enjoyable as well. Wrap your poodle up in a towel and gently towel dry, you may also wish to use a hairdryer at this time to keep your dog warm and to speed up the drying and grooming process. Potential Coat issues Encountered When Shampooing a Poodle Poodles have a super unique coat in that unlike most dog breeds. That being said, poodles require pretty frequent grooming and to avoid specific coat problems. Here are a few of the issues poodle parents may run into when shampooing: Matted Hair. Matted hair is most common among playful pups, and also becomes prevalent at around nine months old as puppy hair changes into adult hair. A spray-in conditioner may be a good option to look into, or simply ask your groomer for tips as they are more than happy to help you and give you some expert advice. When a female poodle is in heat or whelping a litter of puppies, a boost in estrogen will cause hair to thin. Allergic reactions can be caused by anything but are nonetheless miserable for your poodle. Intense itching and irritation can cause hair loss and scabs. Luckily, there are tons of shampoos available for dogs suffering from allergies that will be gentle and moisturizing. This is a condition caused by a hormone imbalance. Aside from a thinning coat, look for signs of lethargy and mental slowness, and be sure to contact your vet should you notice these symptoms. Alopecia X. As scary as it sounds, this condition is not painful to your poodle and is actually a growth hormone deficiency. This genetic condition is most common amongst small breeds and is the process of a poodle experiencing hair loss. Fleas, Ticks, and Mites. These pesky pests can cause poodles to bite, scratch, and pull out hair. Many shampoos on the market will kill these pests on contact, but be sure to check with your vet to see if your poodle needs preventative care as well. Ringworm is a highly contagious fungal infection. Over Curling. Over curling can cause excessive knots and matting that will be painful and uncomfortable for your pooch. Poodles are notorious for their beautiful curly coats, but they do require a certain amount of attention to avoid matting and painful skin irritations. There are a few things to know and understand about poodle fur before you begin your bathing and grooming routine at home. Poodle fur is real hair that grows continuously, so routine care is a must. If opting for a professional groomer, your poodle will need to go roughly every weeks. Run clippers over the surface of feet, as well as in between toe pads. With your poodle on its hind legs, trim hair from the belly to back, get inside its hind legs, then move to the base of the tail and trim under the tail from the bottom. Check out this helpful video on grooming your poodle at home: Final Thoughts Poodles are all around great dogs and will make the perfect addition to any household. Still, there is a certain amount of attention their notoriously fluffy and curly coats need to avoid skin irritation and discomfort. Before choosing a shampoo for your poodle, consider any specific needs your poodle may have, such as an extra-gentle formula for puppies or a medicated shampoo to soothe skin irritation. Knowing how to bathe and groom your poodle properly is also super important to keep their skin and coat as healthy as possible and prevent matting from creating painful skin irritation. Poodles are smart, friendly, and make for a great family or show dog. With proper bathing and grooming techniques, your poodle will stay happy and healthy on the outside, as well as the inside. Whether you're looking to adopt a poodle, or already own one, I created Poodle report to be the ultimate guide to help you find the answers you need. Recent Posts. In fact, Poodles are usually described as having hair, not fur. Poodles are known for their lack of shedding; this is because the tight curls keep the hair in place rather than falling out onto the floor. When you are on the hunt for a shampoo for a dog with curly hair and no undercoat, there are particular challenges and specifics to be on the lookout for. Here are some tips on finding the perfect Poodle shampoo: Proper pH balance, preferably 6. Below we will take a look at the different types of shampoos and what purpose they serve. Look for shampoos that are nourishing and enriched with vitamins and essential oils. Remember, a healthy nutritious diet will also play a role in healthy coats so make sure you are feeding a high-quality diet that is age and size appropriate with high levels of essential fatty acids. These shampoos are made to prevent the yellowing of the coat and give your Poodle that vivid, white, flawless coat color. Some shampoos are even designed to enhance the black color in black dogs. Tangle Management Poodles are curly-haired cuties that are prone to tangles. You may want to consider a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner to help combat those stubborn tangles. You can even purchase a stand-alone conditioner in addition to your shampoo, a lot of brands will offer both options. Choosing an option that is specifically designed to help eliminate unwanted odors will help get your dog smelling fresh and clean again. Some dogs have more severe skin conditions that may require occasional bathing with medicated shampoo. Make sure to consult with your veterinarian for assistance in picking the best medicated shampoo. In general, when dealing with sensitive skin, make sure you look for shampoos made from natural ingredients and avoid any harsh chemicals that could cause further irritation. These shampoos are not meant for regular bathing use, but come in handy when you have a parasite problem. These shampoos can contain some chemicals that may not be suited for all skin types. Discuss flea and tick shampoos with your veterinarian before use. Puppy Shampoo If you have a puppy, you will want to purchase a puppy shampoo. Puppy shampoos are typically gentler and are considered tear-free. You can also keep an eye out for shampoos that suit all life stages. Waterless Shampoo Are you needing just a quick, on-the-go coat refreshment for your dog? Waterless shampoos are not designed to replace regular full baths but are a great option for when you require a quick fix or a simple spot treatment. Conclusion Hepper Colloidal Oatmeal Pet Shampoo is a great overall choice that is all natural, pH balanced, and gentle yet effective. It is fairly priced and even covers those with skin sensitivities. This natural shampoo is not only healthy but leaves the coat shiny, healthy, and well-moisturized. Try not to get too overwhelmed on the hunt for the right shampoo, just keep your needs in mind and consider all the factors before making your final choice. I was born and raised in Ohio but now live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. We share our home with a German Shepherd, several snakes, tarantulas, and a couple rescue cats. I am also a huge advocate for bully breeds. I feel most at home in the forest either on horseback or in hiking boots.Read more Advertisement. I liked the high-quality ingredients in this shampoo. I found that it was easy to lather and had a pleasant smell. I liked that it had the ability to enhance a light coat without being too harsh. Shampoos with natural ingredients are typically a good indicator of quality. The shampoo you choose should be free of soaping agents and any other harsh additives. This will help to keep it tangle-free and keep your pup looking their best. Some shampoos will be suitable for both adults and puppies, especially if they contain gentle, natural ingredients. Alternatively, you can buy a puppy specific shampoo. High-quality ingredients also add to the value of a shampoo. Additional Features Some shampoos will have specific purposes or additional features, such as being brightening or whitening, tackling fleas and ticks, or being medicated for skin issues. You can choose what best suits your dog if you feel they need a specific shampoo. They have hair rather than fur, unlike most other dog breeds. Just like humans lose some hair as it grows, so do Poodles, although it will be minimal. Either way, regular grooming is essential. It gives you an opportunity to spot lumps, bumps, and skin irritations and deal with them quickly. The grooming process can also help you to bond and build trust with your pup. Bathing them too regularly can strip their skin and coat of their natural oils. Since their coat is so curly and dense, often the hair they do shed becomes trapped within their curls, along with dirt and debris. You should get your Poodle used to baths early on where possible to reduce stress and help them adjust to process. I sometimes find it helpful to rinse twice just to be sure. Additional Grooming As well as bathing your Poodle, they also need to be brushed a few times a week to keep their coat free of mats and tangles. They may need more frequent brushing if you keep their hair longer, and less if you keep it very short. You should regularly trim their nails, usually every few weeks. Your Poodle should have a regular oral hygiene routine, including brushing their teeth and potentially using dental chews. This helps to keep their teeth and gums clean and healthy. You should bath your Poodle every 4 to 8 weeks, depending on how dirty they get. Can you use human shampoo on your Poodle? Since Poodles have hair rather than fur, you could use human shampoo on your Poodle. Conclusion Bathing your Poodle with the right shampoo helps to keep their skin and coat healthy. It also makes them clean and fresh ready for cuddle time. We only recommend products we have tested and are using on our own dogs! Why you should get a Doberman German Shepherd Mix 1. What does a German Shepherd and Doberman mix look like? Half Doberman and half German Shepherd, Doberman Shepherds are muscular, compact dogs , with long muzzles and dark eyes that hint at their smart nature. The ears of the German Shepherd Doberman mix are typically upright, like those on the Doberman Pinscher. These puppies have a soft but short coat that may come in black, tan, or black and tan colors. How big will a German Shepherd and Doberman mix get? Doberman-German Shepherd puppies grow up to be large dogs , reaching up to 22 to 26 inches 55 to 66 cm in height and weighing 90 to pounds 40 to 45 kilograms in adulthood. What are the characteristics of a German Shepherd and Doberman Mix? Doberman Shepherd dogs come from pure breeds that are similar in temperament. This crossbreed is also known for its affectionate nature and its loyalty to its owners. This dog needs plenty of space, and it thrives in homes with huge backyards where it can run around. The German Shepherd Doberman mix will also be more comfortable in warmer climates. This crossbreed may have inherited this trait from the Doberman Pinscher, which has a low tolerance for cold weather because of its low body fat and short coat. What makes the Doberman Shepherd an excellent guard dog? The Doberman German Shepherd mix is the cross of two of the most well-known guard dogs in the world. Its sheer size and strong muscles give the German Shepherd-Doberman dog a considerable advantage when it comes to subduing attackers or intruders, whether people or other smaller animals. Another thing that makes the German Shepherd Doberman mix a reliable guard dog is its bone-breaking bite. This Doberman Shepherd has a high bite force due to its size , plus its parent breeds have some of the highest-rated bite forces among dogs today. Doberman Shepherds are also highly observant and alert. These dogs use a loud, attention-grabbing bark to let you know of potentially dangerous situations and unusual activity on your property. Properly training your Doberman Shepherd ensures that you can keep its aggression under control while making the most of its guarding skills. Though popular, crossbreed dogs are somewhat controversial. The Doberman German Shepherd mix is stunning to look at. He also has the potential to have a phenomenal temperament and disposition when raised by the right owner. However, Doberman German Shepherd mix dogs are also work-oriented breeds that come from two different purebred parents. As with all crossbreed dogs, this means that the Doberman German Shepherd mix could be unpredictable when it comes to traits like health, appearance, and even temperament. And this is where the crossbreed controversy comes into play. What Is A Crossbreed? Sometimes referred to as a hybrid, designer dog, or mixed breed, a crossbreed dog is the offspring of two different purebred parent breeds. Mutts, on the other hand, are often born without the help of human manipulation and tend to have a variety of different canine DNA in their genetics. Originally, crossbreeding was done by breeders working to create dogs with combined breed traits for the purpose of work. In fact, it is believed that the majority of purebred dogs we are familiar with today are the result of careful crossbreeding over centuries. And though crossbreeding has been an ongoing practice since nearly the beginning of the human and dog relationship, the practice of selling newer generation crossbreed dogs to the general public has only become popular over the last two decades. Designer dogs are incredibly trendy these days, with many selling for as much if not more than their purebred counterparts. However, crossbreed dogs may have the upper hand when it comes to health. Crossbreed dogs could have the benefit of hybrid vigor , a term used that means hybrid dogs may be less susceptible to inheriting the genetic health issues of their parent breeds thanks to their widened gene pool. The breed developed somewhat of a bad rep due to their use by Nazis during World War ll. However, when properly raised, Doberman Pinscher dogs are known to be incredibly intelligent, affectionate, devoted, and trainable. They can do well in families when well trained and socialized, and they make wonderful guardians and protectors of people and other pets. However, some Doberman Pinschers have been known to bond more closely with one person in the family, and they are high-energy dogs that are not ideal for the more laid-back dog owner. For this reason, we recommend anyone investing in a Doberman Pinscher or a Doberman Pinscher mix to consider their lifestyle and ability to commit to this type of dog. But what about the German Shepherd? German Shepherds are highly intelligent, work-oriented, and trainable. They become very bonded with their owners and are best suited for experienced dog owners with an understanding of working breeds. When properly raised, trained, and socialized, German Shepherds make great family companions. They do well in active households and with owners who have flexible schedules. Like all dogs, without the proper care, exercise, socialization, and training, the German Shepherd can develop serious behavioral issues like depression, anxiety, stress, and fear-based aggression. The Doberman German Shepherd Pinscher mix is an intelligent and work-oriented hybrid. Coming from two work-oriented parent breeds, you might think that the Doberman German Shepherd mix is a serious-minded dog with no time for play. Remember, this is a crossbreed that is the offspring of two working breeds, and as such he can be prone to developing serious behavioral issues if not kept physically and mentally fit. These issues could include barking, marking, chewing, scratching, and even depression, anxiety, and aggression. When it comes to exercising your Doberman German Shepherd mix, this is a high-energy dog that is going to need at least an hour or more of dedicated exercise each and every day. When you are exercising your Doberman German Shepherd Mix, be sure to walk him on a proper leash and harness. Like many high-energy dog breeds, your German Shepherd Doberman Pinscher mix may be inclined to pull on leash. Instead, use proper walking equipment that not only helps to reduce and redirect pulling but also teaches your dog proper walking manners without harming him. The harness works by clipping in the front, which means that when your dog does pull he will be redirected back to you. In addition to being bold and protective, they love to romp and play just like any other dog. The best way to socialize a Doberman Shepherd is to start introducing it to new people as a puppy. Their natural instinct is to aggressively protect their master, but they also love to be around people. If the puppy takes after the Golden Retriever parent more, then the puppy will be bigger in size and weight. The hybrid breed could be between 21 and 24 inches tall and weigh 55 to 75 pounds. Male dogs tend to be on the higher side, while females are on the lower side. If the puppy takes after the Beagle parent more, then the puppy will be a bit smaller in size and weight. Then it will probably be between 13 to 24 inches tall and weigh between 20 to 75 pounds. Again, the male leans toward the heavier end and the female toward the lighter end. When it comes to the coat texture of the dog, it could be sleek and shiny like that of the beagle parent or long and thick like that of the Golden parent. With the coat texture, you usually get the middle ground and can expect medium-length hair. This mixed breed is generally more hypoallergenic than the parental breeds. If you are allergic to other dogs, this could be the breed for you. However, the Golden Retriever Beagle is known to be a medium to heavy shedder. Now color is a whole different story. The color can range from black, brown, white, red, fawn, or cream, brindle usually implies some striping , to pied means light-colored skin with several dark patches. So, the golden retriever beagle can be a single color to a mix with some striping or dark patches!! But no matter the color, they all are adorable! This particular breed loves people of all ages and loves to be with other pets in the family as well. Because of this, they make the best family pet addition. One of the most likable characteristics of the Beago is how friendly they are. This breed is very affectionate. They have a huge desire to be petted and to lick you. They want to be close to their family, whether to play or just lay beside you while you are resting. They are not the type of dog that will stay quietly in a crate for an extended period of time alone. They love to be in social interactions and especially at the center of attention. Beagos are extremely smart, and they understand the social situations they may be in and their human expectations of them. While Beagos are high-energy dogs, they are usually calmer than their parental breeds. Be prepared though, because Beagos are high-energy dogs and crave attention, they do not like to be left home alone all day. If you leave your Beago alone to their own defenses too often, they could become quite destructive because of their boredom. They can also become quite anxious whenever they know you are leaving the house without them. As mentioned before, the Beago is a highly active breed. At a minimum, they will require 45 to 60 minutes of running around time daily. That means rainy days, snowy days, and sunny days! This breed acts like a puppy even in their senior years when you are talking about their energy level! And because of their high intelligence level, you must also include mental activities. It is a plus to have a fenced-in yard for your Beago. Having a nice-sized fenced-in yard will allow them some run-around playtime on their own throughout the day. Taking them for two minute daily walks is also a good idea. Some other ideas for physical activity could be taking them to a doggie park to run around and socialize with other people and dogs. If you jog, hike, or run, take your Beago with you. Play ball or frisbee with your Beago. Of if you have children, let your Beago play with your children. But please, never leave any dog unattended with a young child. Some ideas for mental stimulation for your Beago include: playing hide and seek, using food puzzles, creating obstacle courses for your Beago, and teaching them dog tricks, to name a few. After mental stimulation play time, put their toys away. You might even want to teach your Beago to put their own toys away. They love to please you, so make sure you praise and treat them with special snacks when they listen! Training Your Golden Retriever Beagle In view of the fact that this breed is very intelligent, it should go without saying that they are easily trainable. However, as with most breeds, it is essential that training is started when the pups are young, and it is consistent. The Beago lives to please their owners. So, make sure you give plenty of positive reinforcement and yummy treats when training. Never yell or use harsh corrections when training unless it is to avoid serious harm to your pup. Beagos are very sensitive. Yelling or hitting your pup when they do not listen will not work well when training. This kind of behavior will alienate your pet and cause the opposite effect. Instead, redirect and reward them immediately when they follow instructions. However, as with the parental breeds, the Beagos are prone to obesity. So, while giving yummy treats is almost necessary during training, ensure you follow up all those treats with some extra exercise. Make sure you teach your pup all the usual commands, such as sit, stay, come, wait, and leave it. And you can teach them cool tricks like roll over, give me a paw or shake, play dead, and walk on their hind legs. Part of your training should include socialization around new people and other pets. It should also include outdoor social interactions. Introduce your pup to new people and pets early, and take them to outdoor pet-friendly restaurants and pet-friendly stores so they learn what is expected from them at a young age. To keep your Beago engaged and wanting to learn more, you will need to make training exciting and fun to keep their desire to learn what you are teaching ongoing. Remember, they live to please you, their owner. Grooming and Care of the Golden Retriever Beago The grooming of your Beago will depend on which parental breed it takes after the most. However, they will require more maintenance if they resemble the Golden Retriever parent with a longer coat. Beagles only need to be brushed about once a week, while Goldens require a minimum of every other day. It is wise to start nail care early on. If you do not like using nail clippers on your pet, try introducing them to a Dremel early on. A Dremel is less traumatic to your pet than nail clippers. To properly introduce your pup to the Dremel, just touch it to their paws. If they are ok with that, praise them and treat them. Next, follow this by rubbing the Dremel against their nails, still with the Dremel off. Again, praise and treat. Let your pet smell it while you are praising and treating them. They will associate the Dremel as being good and them getting treats. Next, offer peanut butter on a toy sometimes this is best done with two people , then turn the Dremel on. Let them get used to the noise and then rub it against their nails. Next thing you know, you will be filing down their nails like a pro — all the while, your Beago loves it because you are praising and treating, and they love to make you happy! You will want to trim their nails before they get too long. Long nails become painful for your dog, and they tend to break off. Depending on how the nail breaks, it can create an opening that leads to infection. Plus, using a Dremel on shorter nails is much easier for you and your Beago. You will want to bathe your Beago probably once a month. More if they are super active and get into a lot of dirt or mud. Bathing too frequently leads to dry skin. And always use shampoos made for dogs. Since they have floppy ears, they tend to be prone to yeast infections in their ears. Clean their ears weekly to prevent this. Again, use toothpaste that is meant for dogs. Giving your dog a dental cleaning treat such as Greenies daily is also a good idea; Greenies will keep plaque buildup to a minimum and keep their breath smelling fresh. Lastly, proper feeding is crucial to the health of your Beago. In addition, you can add a bit of canned dog food, cottage cheese, plain Greek yogurt, or some cooked or raw egg to mix into the dry dog food to add some exciting flavor to the kibble to keep your dog happy. You might prefer to feed your dog a raw diet or homemade food, which is fine. You might have to add some supplements to this kind of diet and adjust the amount of food given. Health Issues of the Golden Retriever Beagle Mix One of the main reasons breeders crossbreed dogs is to avoid the health concerns that the parental breeds are susceptible to. Also, if you get your Beago from a breeder, you should ask for the health certificate of the parents so you can be aware if the parents had any of these conditions and alert your vet to the fact. But that said, do not leave toddlers unattended with your Beago. Beagos can be stubborn as puppies, especially when you are training them. They are extremely friendly, so do not depend on them to be a watchdog. While their barking will alert you to strangers, their barking is more of a request to be petted by the stranger than an attempt to scare the visitor away. While the Beago is a high-energy dog, Beagos tend to be calmer than either of their parental breeds. Beagos can have large, almost pleading adorable eyes. You can almost tell what your pet is thinking by looking at their expressive eyebrows. And you swear, when they look at you, they are looking deep into your soul. They will learn very quickly how to melt your heart and get their way — remember they are very smart! Beagos can be nosier than most dogs. However, because they are so easy to train, you can quickly teach them not to bark so much. Just be consistent in your training. Both parental breeds were hunters and retrievers. Beagos have tons of energy because their parents were trained to hunt all day. They are known to be funny and, at times, maybe a little eccentric. The Golden Retriever Beagle Mix is very curious, and this natural curiosity can, at times, get them into trouble. But this curious, adventurous nature makes them perfect for families with children, especially when they live in a nice size fenced-in yard that leads to many opportunities for safe exploration. The Golden Retriever Beagle Mix is a people-person dog. They want to be with family. Do not get this particular breed if you do not plan on bringing them everywhere you go. They want to be with their loved ones, not at home alone. Since this particular crossbreed has very few health problems, it is one of the least costly breeds to own. And since they could live to be seventeen years old, they are a long-term commitment, not to be taken lightly. This dog breed is a loving sweet-natured dog whose main goal in their life is to please their owner, to love and be loved. What better dog could you want for your family? Other Golden Retrievers Mixes. There are the basics that every dog needs such as food, toys, a bed, anti-flea and tick drops, microchips, etc. Visit your vet to talk about regular checkups, vaccinations, and the best diet you can provide for them. These puppies will eventually grow into very energetic dogs. If you have enough time and energy to dedicate to your pup, they can become a loving member of your family. They are a great option for active families and anyone who loves the outdoors. Typically, they will look like a small Golden Retriever with big eyes and floppy ears. Their coat can also be completely golden, or it can be multi-colored like their Beagle parents. This makes the Beago in the top 3. This makes the Beago a very intelligent, alert pup with a sniffer that would rival a BloodHounds. This is a happy and playful pet that makes a great family dog. They are super intelligent with a lot of energy. They also have a lot of spunk, courage, and charisma. This is a pup that is eager to get outside to run, play fetch, or just go for a ride. You will also find this breed is very loyal and protective of their family. Though they are not aggressive in the least, they will stay close when they feel danger is around. They will also give a warning bark when one is warranted. Interestingly, you will find this happy pooch is more likely to bark in excitement than in anger. That being said, this is not a pup who will have issues with anxiety, either. You can also count on this hybrid to be a watchdog. As mentioned, they will give an alert if they are started or something is fishy. Then again, they are very friendly, so a quick pat will have them eating that bark quickly. You should also be aware that they have a very sensitive nose that they will follow into some trouble if not watched carefully. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Although we mentioned it above, this is a very social and friendly pup who will get along with everyone. Another great quality that makes this breed an excellent family companion is their patience. They can take quite a bit of poking, whisker pulling, and tail tugs without becoming annoyed. This makes them a great choice if you have toddlers. Even better, they will also follow the kids around like a worried parent. Single and the Beago If you live alone, Beago is also a good choice. In this case, though, you want to make sure you have a lot of time to spend with them. If you work from home or can bring your furball along with you is best. Though they will not suffer from separation issues, they can become lonely and depressed with the lack of connection to their family. It is interesting to note that the Beago tends to be more protective of single pet-parents than they do in a family setting. They are more apt to be wary of strangers, and they like to stay close at night. Of course, this could be due to the development of a stronger bond when your attention is mostly on them. On the flip side, they are also more likely to become depressed when left alone. As a social animal, they will get along well with other canines whether they be pets or just friends they meet at the local park. You will find your Beago is eager to run up to other dogs to make friends and start a game to chase. They are also rarely aggressive to other canines, jealous of your attention, or have territorial issues with their space or food. That being said, it is with smaller animals where things can get a bit hairy on time. With a strong hunting background, this pup has a fantastic sense of smell and a well-preserved prey drive. They are likely to chase squirrels, chipmunks, or any other smaller animals. You may also see this behavior with other pets like cats or gerbils. Again, they are not likely to hurt them, but they will give them a good chase up a tree; or your curtains. That being said, with early socialization, it is very possible to have a multi-creature, peaceful home. A post shared by Graham Moore instagraham. What else is there to know? Trust us, a lot! Not to fret, however, that is what we will cover next! They need to have nutritious meals that contain all the vitamins, minerals, and supplements appropriate for their age, weight, size, and health. Although we can give you a bunch of tips and we will , the best place to get a detailed meal plan is your vet. Especially as this pup is prone to weight gain. Of course, not everyone can do that, so here are some basic tips for giving them healthy meals and treats. Single Lean Protein: Some of the best recipes are made with a single lean protein source. Simply put, they use fat for energy to boost protein to strengthen their muscles. That being said, you want to find healthy fats like fish oil or chicken fat. This allows them to be flexible, strong, and able to keep up with their active lifestyle. Gut Health: Many canine experts believe that gut health is a barometer for how everything else is doing in the body. This is why you want to find food that has good levels of fiber, probiotics, and other healthy digestive ingredients. Artificial Ingredients: This is what you want to stay away from. Artificial ingredients like food color and preservatives are unhealthy for your pet and should be avoided. Sugar and Salt: Both of these ingredients can cause serious health issues for your pup including fatal conditions. That being said, they can and should eat a small amount of both. Just make sure you are not giving your pet table scraps that are high in either ingredient. Vitamins and Minerals: Both vitamins and minerals are important for your pet. What these specific nutrients are will depend on their age, weight, health, and lifestyle, so you should consult your vet. The Beago requires at least two minute walks per day plus some additional exercise in the backyard or dog park. This equals about six to seven miles of walking or jogging per week. This designer breed has a lot of energy to burn, yet they also need attention and connection with you. Playing games like fetch or tug of war is great. Going on hiking trips or swimming is also fun. If you are a hunter, even better, as this canine will be very helpful. On the other hand, you want to keep your pup on a leash when out for a walk. Between their sense of smell and prey drive, they are likely to take off in excitement before you know what happened. Though they respond to commands well, their baser instincts can take over. Toys and Games If you are not a hunter, your dog will benefit from other games that put their mental abilities to work. Games of hide and seek with a stuffed animal or an agility course is great and will give them a lot of satisfaction. Besides that, you also want to give them toys to play with. Like most dogs, the most important toy is something to chew one, but you can also try tug ropes, stuffed animals, and puzzles. Regardless of what you pick, they will enjoy playing with them when you are not available to play. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and patient nature, they will not only catch on quickly but they can stand longer training sessions than most. That being said, they must know you are in charge. This pup can have a stubborn side, but it is usually more prevalent when they are mistreated or frustrated. Like with most dogs, they respond well to positive reinforcement. Praise and treats will go a long way to smoothing the road for a well-behaved pup. Also, consistency and repetition are good guidelines to follow. You need to start training your pet as early as possible in their puppy years. When young, they are not as likely to focus for extended periods, so keep the training short and exciting when they are super young. A post shared by Silas The Great silas. Still, it is pretty basic. They will need to have their fur brushed several times a week, maybe more during the shedding season. If they have shorter fur like the Beagle, you can use a slicker brush to smooth their coat. With longer fur, however, you want to go with a pin brush to make sure they are not getting any tangles or knots. The Golden Retriever can have a decent amount of shed, so people with allergies to pet dander may have a more difficult time. This breed is prone to ear infections, so you want to check them twice a week for redness, mites, wax, and signs of irritation. You also want to swab the ears clean once a week with a soft cloth and approved ear cleaning solution for dogs. You can also use warm water, but avoid using soap. Teeth and nail care is pretty basic. A guillotine nail clipper usually works best. As far as their chompers, you want to attempt cleaning as often as you can. You may also want to consider dental treats or gels to aid in keeping plaque to a minimum. Of course, annual vet check-ups are recommended, as well. That being said, each canine can develop different ailments depending on their lifestyle, age, weight, and genetics. Below, take a look at some of these issues that are predisposed to their parents. The Beago is a great family companion with a lot to offer their human family. They are playful, loving, and loyal. Their patience and gentle nature make them a great pet for families with small kids, while their unwavering devotion to their humans is astounding. You will also find the Beago to be fairly easy to care for. If you are looking for a fun and spunky pal to go on jogs and relax in the yard, you have found your match with this breed. Related Read:. Both parent breeds are renowned for their loyalty and intelligence, though both are also susceptible to a myriad of health concerns, which are less common in their Beago offspring. These dogs display many of the best traits of both parent breeds, making them excellent pets and hunters that are sure to continue growing in popularity. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Those that are intended for showing or hunting could cost substantially more. Adopting a dog from a shelter can save you a substantial amount of money while giving a lucky pup a second chance at a great life. See what their reputation is like and read any testimonials or reviews you can find. When you go to look at the puppies, look around the facilities and see what kind of conditions the puppies are kept in. This makes them incredibly easy to get along with. Naturally, with both sets of genes, Beagos can be expected to turn out equally friendly. These dogs tend to be quite affectionate and will take love from just about everyone. If you leave your Beago alone too much, it could become destructive out of boredom and anxiety. Are These Dogs Good for Families? With hunting deep in their genes, it can be hard for a Beago to turn off its prey drive. As such, smaller animals like cats and even small dogs can often set a Beago off, resulting in a chase. Naturally, this can be quite dangerous for other little critters. Granted, if you properly socialize your Beago often from an early age, you might be able to avoid such behaviors, but a strong prey drive is inherent in this breed. They have tons of energy thanks to their hunter parents. Both Golden Retrievers and Beagles are known for their outstanding endurance, and the Beago inherits this trait from them. All that energy is going to need an outlet, so you should expect to spend a good minutes exercising your Beago every day. If you skip this, your Beago could get bored and start displaying destructive behaviors that can be difficult to untrain. Luckily, their Beago offspring also display this affinity for training. Beagles have very short coats that need little upkeep while Golden Retrievers have much longer coats that require a bit more maintenance. If your dog takes after the Beagle side more, then it will probably only need its coat brushed once per week. For Beagos that have more of a Golden Retriever coat, brushing up to three times each week might be necessary. Keep them clean and make sure to always inspect for buildup, redness, mites, and any other signs of poor ear health. Minor Conditions. Updated: October 17th, This article contains affiliate links. Read the full disclosure here. The golden retriever and the beagle are extremely popular dog breeds, and a lot of people have a hard time deciding which will be a better fit for their family. Fun-loving, playful, and active, both beagles and golden retrievers make wonderful companions and family dogs. But, while these two breeds share some traits, they are also different in many ways. Keep on reading to find out! On the other hand, a golden retriever is a medium to large size dog that is better suited for larger homes with access to outdoor space. The beagle is a small, hardy, and compact scent hound and an excellent hunting dog. Most beagles are between 13 and 15 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh from 18 to 30 pounds when fully grown. By comparison, we have a golden retriever, a medium to large size gun dog that belongs to the sporting dog group. Measuring 20 to 24 inches tall at the withers and weighing between 55 and 75 pounds , the golden is a significantly larger dog than the beagle. According to the golden retriever breed standard , goldens should have a broad skull, strong jaws, and dark brown eyes. Unlike the beagle with its short double coat, the golden retriever has a medium-long, dense double coat. Depending on your personal preferences, you may find that you like short-coated breeds like the beagle more than long-haired dogs, or vice versa. Beagles have smooth, dense, and short double coats that are resistant to rain. However, the most common color for beagles is tricolor with a black saddle, white chest, legs, belly and tip of the tail, and tan on the head and around the saddle on the back. Golden retrievers are best known for their dense, medium-length double coat that has water-repellent properties. The coat can be straight or wavy, and goldens have fur feathering on the chest, back, tail, and thighs. The hallmark of this breed is their golden coat that can come in all shades of gold from light to dark and sometimes even red. While we are on the subject of coat, you should know that both beagles and golden retrievers shed all year round and go through a heavier shed during spring and fall. Beagle Dog vs Golden Retriever Temperament While both the beagle and the golden retriever make amazing companions and family pets to active people, they have different personality traits. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether the happy-go-lucky and determined beagle will be a better fit for your family as opposed to the eager-to-please and friendly golden retriever. Best described as sweet, funny, excitable, and amiable, beagles are wonderful companions and great hunting dogs. In a loving home, the beagle is an affectionate and curious canine that gets along well with children and other pets. Beagles like to be involved in all family activities and prefer company; otherwise, they can resort to destructive behavior. A bored beagle is particularly fond of barking and howling so make sure that your pup has a lot of toys to keep them occupied, or risk getting a noise complaint from your neighbors. Like the beagle, the golden retriever is also a highly energetic dog that makes an amazing pet to active people of all ages and families with children. Highly intelligent and obedient, the golden retriever is easy to train and is a great breed for both novice and experienced owners. Extremely social and trusting, goldens get along with everyone and will become fast friends with strangers, children, and other dogs. But, regardless of their friendly nature, all golden retrievers need training and proper socialization from a young age to grow into well-mannered and obedient dogs. Beagle And Golden Retriever Health Both the beagle and the golden retriever are considered generally healthy; however, like all other breeds, they too have certain common health problems. With that being said, not all goldens nor all beagles will get any of these diseases. Beagles have an average life expectancy of 10 to 15 years, and may even live longer when properly cared for. Golden retrievers, on the other hand, have an average life span of 10 to 12 years. When it comes to health problems, the most common issues that affect beagles and golden retrievers are: Hip dysplasia.

The Labradoodle is a gorgeous cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle, and the Goldendoodle is an adorable mix between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Characteristics and traits can vary significantly because these pups are a hybrid breed, but they are usually incredibly people-focused, laid back, and playful, making Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training an enjoyable moment. Doodles make awesome pets, especially if their owners fully comprehend the importance of training from a young age. The type of adult dog breed you end up with depends a little bit on their personality and a lot on how you take care of them. Before you begin Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training, it helps to decide exactly what kind of dog you want to have. Do Plenty of Research It is vital that you have an understanding of canine learning theory because dogs learn very differently from people. A puppy does whatever it can to get what it desires the most at that moment. There are plenty of online resources that can teach you about methods to get the best out of your training. It may be helpful to consult a puppy training professional or spend some time at doggy school to get a headstart and pick up tips from experts. Your pup is a blank slate — with your guidance, they can develop the traits and learn the behaviors that you value the most. Labradoodle and Goldendoodle puppies are curious and they love exploring their new home as they make it their own. Getting it right during the early stages sets a precedent for the rest of their life. Spending as much time as you can with them helps build the foundation for a happy, confident and well-behaved dog. Form a Bond and Gain Trust With Your Doodle Before you do anything, you will need to develop a strong bond with your new pal to make sure they trust you. Try to keep your own energy as calm as possible — they bounce off you. While it may be tempting to get excited by their cuteness and mirror their enthusiasm, this makes it more difficult for them to listen to you and regulate their own behavior. Teach your furry friend what to expect from the moment they get into the home to stop them from getting confused. Use Positive Reinforcement Intimidation or fear tactics are never the best way to build a loving and secure bond between you and your fur baby. To make the most of this method, reward your pooch for good behavior and ignore bad behavior. Treats, verbal praise, and clicker training reward them for a job well done. This also helps them to make positive associations with you and training time. Everyone has their own list of priorities and yours will depend on factors such as whether you have children or other pets. Potty training is a straightforward, formulaic process that your new puppy will adapt to. A consistent routine is the key to getting them toilet trained as efficiently and effectively as possible. Let them outside at the same time each day, and take them to the same spot. In the early days, it may be difficult for them to make it all the way through the night, so try to make provisions for this stage. Select a word for them to associate with potty training and repeat it over and over whenever you take them to the toilet. Every time they do their business outside, give them lots of cuddles and praise, treat them and play one of their favorite games. There will be setbacks — getting it right takes time! If they mess in the wrong place, take them outside to their toileting spot and give them the chance to relieve themselves. We cannot emphasize the importance of praising them when they get it right enough! Crate Training Not everyone opts to crate train their puppy, but it can be useful for the earliest stages of Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training. The crate gives them a safe place they can call their own. Be sure to make the time they spend in the crate a positive experience, and never leave them in there for more hours than their age in months plus one hour. For example, a three-month-old puppy can be kept in their crate for no more than four hours. Socialization Dogs are social animals, and Goldendoodles and Labradoodles, in particular, are happiest when they spend time pleasing people and playing. However, building confidence takes effort and guidance from their pet parent. If you want to ensure they grow up to have a balanced personality, you need to expose them to plenty of dogs, people and different situations. Take them out and about as much as possible to help them become accustomed to a range of noises, sights and sounds. Bring them to a local dog park to get them used to spending time around other dogs. Manners Your adorable little pup has the potential to develop a host of bad habits, but these behaviors can be nipped in the bud. Temperament and Dealing with Small Children There are several steps to take while getting your canine cutie used to being a member of a family with children. Both pup and child will need to have clear boundaries mapped out for them so they can build mutual trust and be kind to each other. Let the child practice with a toy before they pick up or cuddle the pup. Ensure the child sits down when they play with the dog; this helps to prevent the pup from getting overexcited. Teach the child to do small tasks to help care for the dog, such as filling the bowl or helping with grooming. Knowing what to expect according to the time of day helps them to settle and feel reassured. Always wake them up at the same time, feed and walk them around the same time and do training exercises at a set time. Patience Is Everything! The best piece of advice for Goldendoodle and Labradoodle training is to have patience. Spend lots of time bonding and playing with your pooch so you can make training something fun that you both enjoy. By thinking a few steps ahead of situations in which problems are most likely to arise, you can prevent a lot of the common difficulties of introducing a puppy to an older dog. As you follow the tips below, the biggest hurdle to overcome will be the difference between the characteristics and needs of your new puppy, and your older dog. This can make playtime between these dogs tricky to manage. Supervision is vital in the first few weeks. Be especially alert to your older dog growling, snarling or raising the fur on the back of his neck. These are signs that he has long since had enough! Let your current dog smell it back at home to start making a mental map of the new family member coming his way. Make sure the space is fenced-in so that you can let both leashes drag loosely on the ground. If any problems come up, you can easily grab the end of the leash and separate the dogs safely. And keep an eye on that body language! Stay relaxed and playful, while always gauging the situation. Parallel Walks: A great way to keep things moving is by going for a walk together. Simply going for a guided walk can reduce tension, anxiety, and fear in dogs. It also helps establish familiarity with other dogs in a natural canine social behavior. Both dogs are distracted from the introductions by physical activity and the sights, sounds, and scents of the world around them. This is usually at around 16 weeks old. In the meantime she should not walk anywhere that any unvaccinated dogs could have access. To do an effective parallel walk, two walkers each have one leashed dog. Throughout the walk, the walkers rotate through positions — the older dog could start in the lead, about 10 yards ahead of the puppy. Then after 10 minutes, the positions are reversed. After another 10 minutes, the dogs are brought side by side with only a yard or two of space between the now parallel-walking dogs. Training Games: You can apply the same intent behind parallel walks to keep the dogs active and distracted from antagonizing each other by playing training games with both dogs near each other during early introductions. Instead of simply turning both dogs loose in the backyard and watching what happens, you can run them through a series of simple cues and tricks. For example, grab your treat pouch and your clicker if you use one and stand in the middle of the backyard, occasionally calling out a cue that your older dog knows. Sit, high five, turn in a circle, target your hand or a target pole, etc. Run through a few commands that will earn your dog some treats and distract him from the new dog. Have a second handler working with the puppy, introducing some basic training games for puppies. Both dogs will be preoccupied, with intermittent sniff and greets in between mini sessions. Finish your short training sessions with a big burst of excitement and playtime with both dogs. Run around the yard together in a game of chase, romp, and roll! My theory is that lying down creates canine body language associated with vulnerability and submission. In a situation with an unfamiliar dog nearby, my dog would rather ignore my training cues than put himself in a position of vulnerability. You should also be very cautious of food-based aggression, as you give out treats. So if you notice either dog getting tense or aggressively stealing treats from the other, then end this game. If this happens you may need to consider working with a professional trainer on how to train two dogs at once without developing treat aggression. Adversaries Become Allies: Take both leashed dogs to unfamiliar territory for walks, such as a park or busy public place. The scents of other dogs will become the focus of their attention, and they will suddenly be allies against the world! Tips on Avoiding Problems The above activities are all great ways to help your older dog and your new puppy to bond. But they do all require active supervision and engagement from you. Follow these top tips to avoid problems between your new arrival and his future friend. Separate Corners or Rooms If your house is a boxing ring, give each dog their separate corner. This is absolutely the simplest but most effective thing you can do when you are getting a puppy with an older dog already in the house. Toy-Free Zone: Put away all toys in the house for a few days to prevent a common form of aggression called resource guarding. Supervised Chew Time: If you want to give your dogs a bone or chewable treat each, great! Just make sure to offer each dog a treat, and be sure to separate them to opposite sides of the room. Remove whichever dog finishes first to avoid a fight. Here are some additional troubleshooting ideas if your new puppy and older dog are still not getting along. Puppy and Older Dog Not Getting Along How to deal with a new puppy and an older dog not getting along will depend on what your dogs are doing, and why. If, however, the older dog becomes VERY aggressive and looks like he could really harm the pup, then by all means, intervene. And give your older dog some space to recover and relax! Older Dog Attacking New Puppy If this is the case, you need to be a bit of a watch guard for your new pup. When the dogs are loose around each other, keep an eye on their body language. The minute you see what makes your older dog aggressive to puppy, step in. When the older dog shows signs of arousal or tension, for example if you catch your dog growling at puppy, break things up. Be sure that both dogs have a space of their own to retreat to. The puppy needs a place to calm down when he gets overly aroused and gets too energetic or aggressive with you or your other dog. Your older dog needs a space of his own to have quiet, peace, and no nipping puppies chewing on his face. But if your older dog constantly steals toys away from your new puppy, growls if the puppy approaches when you are giving affection to the older dog, or gets more protective over his toys or your attention in general, it could seem like he is jealous of the new pooch in town. Do your best to spend quality time with both dogs. And do reward your older dog any time he approaches the new puppy nicely. Give him a treat and praise if the puppy comes near without any incident. Remember that dogs probably do not share our understanding of possession, and puppy toys left lying around will seem like fair game to your older dog, so try to make sure that there are enough to go around. Older Dog Depressed By The New Puppy If your older dog seems to have less energy, be less playful, spend more time away from you and in the other rooms of the house, or hide in corners or under furniture , he may be more than just a little jealous. He might be full-on depressed at the changes in the household routine. Dogs really benefit from routine and structure, so the sooner you can get the whole household back into a routine that resembles what your older dog was habituated to, the better his mental state will be. Choosing a neutral location for the introduction When it was time for canine introductions, we chose a neutral location—one that neither Chloe nor Bear thought of as their own space. Plus, it was a fairly quiet area that rarely had passersby. We kept both Bear and Chloe on leash and let them get to know each other on their own time and in their own way. Walking them home after the introduction After introductions, we walked Bear and Chloe home—both on leash. Do you plan on taking your dog on walks? Like many Labrador Retrievers, Bear-Bear is very food motivated. Also, while Chloe and Bear get along, having separate eating areas is just a smart way to avoid any chance of food aggression issues. That way it was easy to keep a constant eye on the little fella. Also, I recommend a baby gate if you have an area like the kitchen or living room that you can cordon off. The first hello. Do you have tips for introducing a new puppy to the pack? Please comment below. After all, dogs are some of the brightest spots in any of our lives. Why not bring even more happiness to your home with a second dog? But what about the older dog you have at home? Adding a new pup to the home can be a difficult transition for your first dog. Disrupting The Pack Dogs are highly social animals, and tend to form pack structures even when living in homes. When you bring a new dog into the house, you are disrupting an established order. Your older dog will react by trying to reestablish their dominance. This is often easy for older dogs to do because of how much larger they tend to be than puppies. However, there are some easy steps you can take to keep both of your dogs happy. Are they normally calm and friendly? How do they respond when introduced to new dogs? The first few times they interact, you may also want to have both dogs on a leash. Dogs react strongly to new smells. That is, let your old dog smell the pup before they meet in person. This can be done by giving them a blanket that the pup has been wrapped in. This is a subtle but easy way of increasing the chances that your older dog gives your new Goldendoodle a warmer welcome. Even for the calmest of dogs, sharing territory with a new puppy can be stressful. The new puppy may make them act out and try to emphasize their control of the territory. A good way of dealing with this problem is by keeping the pup separated for a portion of the day, usually in a crate. This serves two purposes: it crate trains your dog, and eases the pressure on your older dog. Puppies are also very energetic, and can wear out older dogs. This can lead to the older dog responding aggressively, and could make them see the puppy as a nuisance rather than a friend. Over time, you can let the dogs spend more time together. You may consider bringing in a certified dog trainer to give you more structured ways of helping your two dogs get along. This also may be necessary if your older dog is significantly larger than your puppy, to the point where any aggression could be dangerous. Still looking for a new Goldendoodle to bring home? Head over to our puppy finder page to find the perfect pup. We have included it in your Puppy Packet. We have included a blanket and toy as well. They will afford some comfort and security for the first few days, so keep them close, especially at night. Family Labradoodles — Music to Calm Puppies is a well thought out selection of music designed to calm your pets. The compositions maintain a soothing yet varied dynamic. Your puppy has been listening to this CD since birth and will be a good tool when you are away or at bedtime. We have included a copy in your packet. Limit Exposure First and Foremost: Until your puppy has received all three sets of vaccinations, use caution and good sense in limiting exposure to the very real diseases that await new puppies. I cannot emphasize this enough. Make no Mistake: Parvo, Distemper and other infectious diseases can threaten the life of your puppy. They are deadly and they ARE out there. Until your puppy is fully vaccinated, I strongly discourage Puppy Parks, Pet Stores or open public places where other dogs may have defecated. During a veterinary visit, do not allow your puppy on the floor. Keep him on your lap or in a carrier until he is put on the examining table. Your puppy will need to be vaccinated at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. His vaccination program will continue with your veterinarian. Rabies inoculation is a single dose, usually at four months of age or older, with a repeat vaccination every one to three years. Check with your veterinary facility. Socialization is so important at this time- actually most critical between 4 and 16 weeks- but ongoing for the first year. Pay special attention to this time frame- this is when your puppy learns to grow to be a confident friendly adult. Careful, positive exposure now to all those things he will encounter in his adult life, from car rides to children of all ages to individuals outside of his family, and walks and cats too, and other unfamiliar dogs is essential for a happy well-adjusted dog. I want to mention that at 12 weeks of age, your puppy will experience an ultra-sensitive shy stage. Try not to introduce too much at this time- especially things that could be perceived as fearful, aggressive or over stimulating. You will be walking a fine line between proper socialization and health concerns. Stay vigilant and use good common sense when exposing your puppy to the world. Never, never use pet rest areas; Dog Parks and pet stores are a big no until all immunizations are complete. A darling little girl from a previous litter, Ivy, died 3 weeks after being with her new family. They were anxious for her to go to a dog park with friends despite the warnings and contracted Parvo. She died 36 hours later. So, please, take care while sharing your world — enjoy all the new learning experiences with your puppy while sensibly protecting him. Crate Training I encourage all new puppy owners to use a crate for their puppy. Buy a crate that will accommodate your puppy when he is fully grown. Choose one that has a divider to limit his space initially. This will help with housebreaking. I particularly like the wire crates that have 2 doors; one on the side and front for more placement options. Any time you cannot keep an eye on your puppy, putting him in his crate will keep him safe. Make going in the crate fun! I always give my dogs and puppies a small treat when entering their crate. Never use the crate as a form of punishment Whining: your puppy may or may not whine initially while in his crate. He has been exposed to a crate for several weeks and is familiar with going in and out at will. Do not give in; stay strong- they will learn that being in their crate is a part of everyday life and never a bad thing. Crating, both at night and when you are unable to supervise, is the safest option for your lively and inquisitive puppy. It will also protect your home, woodwork, rugs, table legs, chair rungs, sofa corners, tennis shoes, homework, book bags and anything else that your puppy is convinced is a toy and needs a good chew. Tip: Bitter Apple spray will help deter your puppy from choosing sprayed surfaces as chew toys. Housebreaking This is where your crate becomes an invaluable tool. No animal willingly soils his environment crate. Limiting his space helps to train your puppy to hold his business for longer periods of time. Your puppy will not know how to tell you he needs to go outside so I suggest taking him out every hour or so until he is older and able to go for longer periods of time. Key times to encourage your puppy to potty outside are: When he wakes up-in the morning and after a nap- after playing for an hour, after eating, and of course, hurry when you see him running in circles! Try to take him to the same spot each time and shower praises on your clever puppy when he goes. Remember, he will not know to go outside exclusively for many months. Positive praise for the job well done works. Punishment for accidents, and there will be accidents, may make your puppy fearful and confused with the whole process causing setbacks in the progress he has made. Note: Please remember to give this little puppy time to understand what it is that you expect from him. But most of all, kindness and patience should always temper all parts of the training process. Feeding 4 times a day until they are 4 months of age 3 times a day until they are 6 months of age 2 times a day after 6 months, even as an adult dog Your puppy has been eating Paw Tree chicken and oatmeal formulation. Paw Tree has several very good flavors for puppies. He should continue with this dry food for the first 12 months. At that time his long bone growth is complete. If you wish to change brands at this time, choose a good quality food mixing it in slowly with the Paw Tree until he is acclimated to his new food. Remember that any change in food and your puppy will have gastrointestinal upset which will interfere in housebreaking progress. Otherwise, puppies need to be fed times a day. Plenty of fresh water should be available all day, especially during meals. They are at risk and most prone to drowning. Many pups will leap before they look or simply fall in. Their inexperience, curiosity and fearlessness prompt them to explore but are usually unable to climb out of even small bodies of water. The steep sides of pools and hot tubs are especially dangerous. Your Doodle comes from two breeds that adore a swim and the water is just about the best thing there is, but until they are old enough to find their way out of it, supervision is a must. You will have to teach them where the pool steps or exits are located and help them learn how to navigate their way to safety. Biting When puppies play with one another and explore, they use their mouths; they naturally do the same when they interact with people. Biting in puppies is absolutely normal and therefore a challenge to convince your new pup that it is not acceptable behavior to treat his human as he would his littermate. Do not forget when teaching your pup not to bite, that nipping and mouthing is simply common puppy behavior and that the worst thing you can do is physically punish a pup for something that is natural for him. Discouraging this natural behavior can be trying at times however take solace in the fact that once puppies acquire their adult teeth this behavior disappears. Most normal puppy biting just goes away on its own. Labradoodles are not known for being mouthy dogs so keep in mind that this stage does have an end. Meanwhile, the best approach to this problem is the use of positive distraction and the encouragement and praise of acceptable behavior. Have a favorite toy at the ready and get those teeth into something other than your hand, toe or shoe. Blowing in their face will distract them as well. Building a good relationship on trust rather than fear will create a bond with your puppy that will last his entire lifetime. Your puppy only has you. Be Responsible: When walking your puppy in public places…. Take Time to Read the Book: Even if you have experience with puppies and are sure there is nothing new about raising and loving a puppy. Read the book. You will learn a new trick or two! Enjoy Patricia McConnell- her sensible, charming and good humored approach to training is refreshing. If you leave here with it, it will always be mine. Family Labradoodles. The best way to foster a positive, loving relationship between your two fur babies is to make sure you get the introduction right! Choose a neutral place for the first meeting. Introducing your dog to an unfamiliar puppy in a brand-new location is essential for preventing territorial behavior that can quickly become aggressive. By now, your dog has claimed your home as their own space. Allowing an unknown animal to invade their territory will trigger them to assert their dominance and act defensively. A new, fenced-in, outdoor area is the ideal setting for the initial introduction. Both dogs should be leashed and have access to their own safe space. Let them interact at their own pace. The key is to just be patient and allow their relationship to develop naturally. Let your pooches sniff one another, keeping a close eye on them at all times. You can gradually allow them to get closer and progress in their interactions if they seem relaxed and curious. Watch their body language. If they seem alert, approachable, friendly, or even playful, encourage them to socialize and explore one another. Get started on expanding your family! With a little bit of time, patience, and a lot of nurturing, your new puppy and resident dog will be the best of friends in no time. Australian Labradoodle Breeder - specialising in miniatures and small mediums Family Feedback My precious girl Ruby, had the best start in life, Peter and his family provided a secure and loving home, where she and her litter brothers and sisters were socialised with children, adults and other animals. Being raised in this family environment means Ruby has a great temperament, she is such a happy little dog, I think she was born with a smile on her face. Her mother Tess and auntie Bella are beautiful dogs, together they raised five healthy and adventurous puppies, all have great personalities. Ruby settled into her new family without any issues and quickly found all the best snoozing spots. Being so intelligent she was very easy to toilet train, we attended puppy school then dog training. She requires very little grooming, her coat is non-shedding and does not matt, I brush her once a week and have her clipped about every twelve weeks. Beach Shack Honeymooners. About Labradoodles What is special about Alpen Ridge and why get your puppy here? Alpen Ridge has always been based on a guardian program where the breeding dogs live with families not in kennels or overcrowded situations. This allows them to be the companions they were bred to be and have their life long families. My focus is quality puppies that are reared in a home environment. You become part of the Alpen Ridge Family, not just a customer. Here are some helpful tips to understand what a breeder means when they are using these phrases. The original multi-gen Australian Labradoodle, which is the original Labradoodle, has a foundation stock including 6 different parent breeds. This was a breed that was developed with goals in mind for a low shedding service dog, not a designer dog. The multi-gen Labradoodle has only poodle and lab in its heritage. It does not include the other parent breeds that were originally used by the creators of the breed. These dogs tend to shed their coat since they are more closely related to the Labrador and often have a wire hair or feathered look to them. F2 would be two F1 bred together and there can be quite a variation in coats. These dogs have not had the multiple generations of Labradoodle mated with another Labradoodle nor the addition of Australian Labradoodle foundation stock or multiple parent breeds. They are often developed to bring new bloodlines into the breed and bred into the mulit-gen lines. Apply for a Puppy Sunset Hills welcomes you! I had never heard of a cavoodle before so when researching for a dog i was searching "small dog with Kelpie temperament".As Beck is a teacher she values early education. Wheat Soy Preservatives, some grains like wheat, barley, corn, and white rice, as well as dyes, excessive salt, and various sugars, are among the common ingredients in dog food that can irritate the stomach. Helps speed up recovery time. To help expedite the recovery process and support a healthy digestive system, consider feeding your pup a specialized formula crafted for stomach problems. These specially formulated foods provide essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that aid in smooth digestion 2. Maintains a healthy weight. You can maintain a healthy weight by choosing a complete and balanced dog food formula and feeding it in the recommended amounts. Your German Shepherd can maintain a healthy weight by eating the vitamins, minerals, and calories found in dog foods designed for sensitive tummies and diarrhea. Reduces inflammation. Giving German Shepherd dogs food to treat diarrhea also has the benefit of reducing the inflammatory response that results. Gentle dog foods designed for stomach sensitivities in German Shepherds are less likely to cause stomach inflammation, reducing digestive irritation. Boosts their immune system. Incorporating easily digestible ingredients that are less taxing on the digestive system, sensitive formula dog foods support the immune systems of these animals. Reduces stress. The digestive system can become irritated by anxiety and stress, which can result in diarrhea. However, giving your German Shepherd dog food designed to prevent diarrhea can lessen their stress from stomach aches and give them a sense of relief. There are more benefits than you might have thought! The following is a quick guide to choosing foods that encourage firm stools and lessen stomach upset: High in protein, coming from a limited number of protein sources Look for foods that are high in protein and contain quickly digestible carbohydrates when choosing the best food for a German Shepherd suffering from diarrhea. Consuming excessive amounts of fat can result in runny stools, upset stomachs, and generally poor nutrition. Easily digestible carbohydrates Rice and oats, which are both readily digestible carbohydrates, can give your dog a consistent supply of energy and support a healthy digestive system. For owners who want to feed their pets a diet free of grains, there are still several food options. Addition of probiotics and prebiotics Dog foods with probiotics and prebiotics should be sought out as well. Prebiotics are indigestible fibers that support the growth of the good bacteria already present in the gut, whereas probiotics are helpful bacteria that support the maintenance of a healthy digestive system. In case more is needed, probiotics and prebiotics can be added as a daily supplement. Fatty acids have been shown to improve digestion, lower inflammation, and, in some cases, ease anxiety and stress. What should you look for when selecting dog food for your German Shepherd with runny poop? Wet or dry formulas What kind of food does your German Shepherd prefer—dry or wet? Or perhaps a mix of the two? Dry foods make up the vast majority of sensitive dog food options. Giving your dog dry kibble on a regular basis is simple and requires little effort. However, if you have a German Shepherd who finds it easier to eat softer, wet food, it may be worthwhile to consider such options to keep their bellies in shape. Cost vs. No dog owner is exempt from the costs of specially formulated pet foods. There are food options for German Shepherds experiencing diarrhea at a range of price points to accommodate different budgets. If you choose a more expensive option, you might discover that your dog is healthier, happier, and has fewer stomach sensitivities. Puppy, adult, and senior age groups You must choose the proper German Shepherd dog food for their age and needs. All of the foods on the list may soothe an upset stomach, but you also need to consider what your German Shepherd needs nutritionally based on their age. In general: Puppy food contains more calories and nutrients for healthy growth than adult food. Senior dog food contains fewer calories and fats to help dogs maintain weight. High palatability Does your dog have taste preferences that might sway them toward a certain flavor? Do you know they definitely dislike certain proteins, such as beef or lamb? German Shepherds with diarrhea can suffer from a lack of appetite, so food that smells tasty to them must be found in order for their guts to stay regular. Look for foods that not only have the vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients your dog needs for optimum health but are also tasty and enticing to your dog. Consider also that any other items you feed your dog could cause diarrhea, including treats. See here a list of healthy treat options for German Shepherds to give you some ideas. Instead of giving them the new food all at once, introduce it gradually to prevent stomach issues. Keep an eye on your dog during the transition period to ensure they are tolerating the new food well. Look out for any signs of digestive upset, such as diarrhea, vomiting, or loss of appetite. If your dog experiences any digestive issues, slow down the transition process and wait until they are feeling better before continuing. Once your dog is fully transitioned to the new food, monitor their overall health and well-being. Remember that if your German Shepherd has stomach issues unrelated to their diet, there is no dog food that will magically cure them. Be on the lookout for any indications of a digestive problem, such as nausea and upset stomach , vomiting, or a loss of appetite. Observe changes in their energy levels, coat, and general behavior. Always get them to a vet when in doubt! However, you should not put off taking your dog to the vet if their health is in jeopardy. Dog food for your German Shepherd with diarrhea should be easily digestible and made with gastrointestinal issues in mind. The best options are:. Why do German Shepherd puppies need the best dog food? German Shepherd puppies need dog food designed for large breed puppies to ensure controlled joint and bone growth. This is because large-breed puppies are prone to certain health risks like hip dysplasia and other Orthopedic conditions. The best dog food for German Shepherds will ensure your puppy grows healthy, strong, energetic, and with lovely skin and coats. Nutritional requirements for German Shepherds puppies German Shepherd puppies require a balanced diet that contains four types of nutrients below. These ingredients will ensure that your pup grows and develops optimally for a longer quality of life. Proteins Proteins help the puppies in building up their body tissues. Proteins can be found in chicken, salmon, beef, lamb, eggs, and dairy. Fats Fats are important for healthy skin, fur, brain, and vision. The recommended fat level per dry matter basis is 8. Fats can be found in fish oil, chicken fat, and beef fat. Digestible carbohydrates Because puppies are incredibly energetic, they need digestible carbs to provide them with energy. Digestible carbohydrates can be found in rice, sweet potatoes, potatoes, and whole oats. Micronutrients In addition to these key nutrients, German Shepherd puppies also need micronutrients like calcium, phosphorus, DHA, and omega-3, and vitamin A. They also need fiber to promote digestion and bowel movement and clean water to help with bodily functions. For large dog breed only: Foods specially formulated for German Shepherd puppies: Veterinarian and pet advisor Dr. Choose a dog food that is specially formulated for German Shepherds puppies or large breed puppies can ensure your pups are getting the nutritional requirements at every stage of their growth. The opposite side is giving your pup the wrong food that may lead to serious growth and digestive problems. Things to consider before choosing dog food for German Shepherds puppies 1. Their growth Puppies may need different nutrients at different stages depending on their growth rate. For instance, a puppy in the weaning stage between three to four weeks will need more antioxidants which are found in foods containing Vitamin C and E. In contrast, a teething puppy will need wet dog food which is easily digestible food on its tummy to minimize intestinal upset. For instance, a younger puppy may have difficulty eating larger food pieces than an older puppy. Teething If your dog is teething, which starts at around three weeks, you may want to consider food that contains calcium like dairy and bone broth for strong and healthy teeth. On the other hand, if the dog has teething problems, wet food may be a better option than dry food until they recover. Alternatively, you add wet canned food to their kibble to make it soft and palatable. The body weight An underweight puppy has different dietary requirements from an overweight puppy. You do not want to underfeed or overfeed your puppy. Activity Level Puppies that are extremely active require foods high in carbohydrates to keep up their energy levels. If your dog is not as active, you want to keep the carbs down to avoid obesity. With all the many dry foods out on the market, it can be hard to choose the healthiest for your pups. Step 1. The Association of American Feed Control Officials developed nutrient profiles to establish minimum and some maximum nutrient concentrations for dogs and cats. These profiles are updated when new findings from research in pet nutrition become available. They provide practical guidance for pet food manufacturers. Adult Maintenance: Dog foods formulated for adult maintenance have the nutrients adult dogs need. Dogs over the age of one are considered adults, except for some large and giant breeds who do not fully mature until age two. You may see variations of these nutrient profiles on dog food packaging. Step 2. Read the food label The label is the most important thing you should check when deciding which puppy food to pick. Here are the 3 things you would like to read on the packaging: a. List of ingredients The list of ingredients should have the main ingredient as the first ingredient then followed by the rest according to their percentage. For instance, in the label below the first five ingredients, are chicken as the main ingredient, ground whole grain corn, chicken by-product meal, ground whole grain sorghum, corn gluten meal and dried plain beet pulp. Feeding guidelines This will show you how much food and how many times you should feed your puppy. Watch this video if you want to better understand the wording on a dog food packaging means: Step 3. Are there any claims of pups reacting to the food? Do the users recommend or warn against the food? Of course, you want to go with what the majority of the reviewers say. You can also check dogadvisor. Step 4. The vet is in a better place to advise on what type of food to go for or what ingredients to avoid. The main downside is that while Royal Canin is the most expensive kibble on our list, it also contains several grains and byproduct ingredients. We were hoping that the price meant higher quality ingredients, but Royal Canin seems to have abandoned whole foods for vitamin and mineral additives. Pros Designed specifically for German Shepherd puppies Smaller-sized kibbles for puppy teeth Protein blend to support digestion Balanced minerals for healthy bone growth Vitamin and antioxidant blend to support young immune systems Cons Some grains and byproduct ingredients 5. Blue Buffalo Wilderness Puppy Food Check Price on Amazon Blue Buffalo is a well-respected brand of dog food, and their reputation for quality is due in large part to their commitment to whole food ingredients. We love how much of the vitamins and minerals provided by this kibble come from whole foods like chicken, carrots, and sweet potatoes. Blue Buffalo does not go the quick and easy route of adding these nutrients later in the process, unlike other brands, and the finished product speaks for itself. However, German Shepherd puppies have notoriously finicky digestive systems. While being grain-free is helpful in that respect, this blend does not contain any other special formulations to support a healthy GI tract. It is extremely healthy, but also on the expensive side — so you may gamble and lose if your puppy has trouble digesting this kibble. Pros Designed for large breed puppies The first ingredient is deboned chicken Grain-free, no byproduct ingredients Vitamins and minerals are mainly provided by whole foods and complete proteins Support for bone growth, immune system, joints, and cognitive functioning Cons No modification to support a sensitive digestion 6. This chicken and brown rice puppy blend contains no byproduct ingredients, multiple lean animal proteins, and only the highest quality grains. However, this food is moderately expensive and does not specifically cater to dogs with sensitive digestive systems. Better to try a grain-free brand first and keep this option as a backup. The ingredients are all high quality, but the variety of foods in this blend leaves something to be desired. Considering that it is made almost entirely from protein, grains, and beans this brand is rather expensive. There are no whole vegetables or fruits, so many of the vitamins and minerals are provided by additives. Added vitamins are not only harder to absorb than those from whole foods, but cheaper. What gives? Most importantly, the beans may be hard for a German Shepherd puppy to digest and lead to a variety of gastrointestinal upset. While the lamb could be a nice change for your pup, we recommend testing this kibble out in small amounts to gauge suitability for your dog. Pros Designed for large breed puppies The first ingredient is deboned lamb, second is chicken meal Only high-quality, whole grains Whole foods supply joint support Cons Few whole fruits and vegetables Contains beans and peas which may upset digestion 8. But upon closer consideration, you will see why this food is not a great choice for German Shepherd puppies. Though it has good proteins, this is another brand that gets almost none of its nutrients from whole fruits or vegetables. Pros Designed for large breed puppies First ingredient is chicken meal No artificial colors or preservatives Balanced minerals to support bone growth Cons The second, third, and fourth ingredients are all grain Very few whole fruits and vegetables 9. Eukanuba Large Breed Puppy Dry Dog Food Check Price on Amazon The Eukanuba Large Breed puppy food is another excellent example of a food that, while technically complete and balanced, does not have the healthful ingredients to make all those nutrients available to your dog. Besides a few good foods like chicken, fish oil, and chicken meal, this kibble is chock full of cheap grains and byproducts. It contains no whole fruits or vegetables, and most of the vitamins and minerals are additives. German Shepherd puppy bellies are particularly sensitive to poor quality ingredients and additives. And though they advertise a special, easy-to-digest prebiotic blend on the package, there is no evidence anywhere else to substantiate this claim. It also tends to be high in protein. Food that is high in protein and calories will provide your puppy with the energy that they need and help them gain the right amount of weight as they grow up. Most puppy food also includes vitamin and mineral supplements, such as calcium and phosphorus, for healthy and strong bones and teeth. You should speak to your vet to ensure that you have the right food and are feeding your puppy the proper amount. We hope that these reviews have helped you decide on the right food for your German Shepherd puppy. Remember to stick with large-breed food because it usually has the correct ratio of vitamins and minerals to give your GSD puppy all the suitable nutrition that they need so they can grow up strong, healthy, and happy. There are many of these centers in Alberta, but not all of them are created equal. So how do you choose the right one for you and your furry friend? Here are some tips when it comes to finding a reputable Dog rescue center in Alberta. Research: Do some research online and ask other people in the area about their experience with different rescues. This will give you an idea of what kind of services they provide and how responsive they are when contacted. Reviews: Check out reviews before making any donations or signing agreements with them — even if they seem like the perfect match! Rescues often go through financial hardships so be sure to check their website often to see if there has been any change in contact information or hours of operation. Dogs Safe for Rehoming: Rescue dogs are amazing, but they come with some challenges. It can be hard to find a good re-homing center that tests the temperament of their animals before letting them go into homes or foster care. Reputable centers work hard to ensure that all of the prospective pets they receive have been temperament tested before adoption, providing you with detailed information about each dog as to how it will affect your home environment if you adopt them in as well as any specific requirements needed from owners who adopt these dogs. Home Checking: All reputable rescue centers will perform a home check before they let you take on any dog. Most rescue centers will expect potential adopters like you who live inside with at least one securely enclosed outdoor area where pets can play without running off too far every day. The difference between buying a puppy and adopting one is different, so before jumping into anything make sure before that, you should be fully prepared and research the rescue center from which you want to adopt your new dog. The dogs rescued from shelters are generally older and have dealt with a lot in their lives. Being prepared for any situation is the most effective way to make sure that you are able to handle it effectively. The most important thing is that you should know that most rescue dogs have been mistreated by their previous owners. They might have come from puppy mills where they were mistreated or not properly cared. Some dogs have been abused or neglected by their former owners, but luckily there are caring people out there to save them! Do you know of any great dog rescues in Alberta? vancouver labradoodle puppies - With a strong, powerful body and plenty of energy, this breed can be quite active at times. The issue at hand however, is what to do if a Boxer is hyperactive and won't calm down. Let's dive into this topic and discuss all relevant issues. When a young puppy is not running around, he is recovering from acting hyper and napping so that he can get up and do it again. And this is because despite his size, the 12 month or 18 months old is still indeed a pup. He has the mentality of a pup and his actions reflect that. So you have a rather large dog of 45 to 55 pounds .The size of Boxers can fool owners. Since Boxers almost but not quite reach their adult weight by 18 months but have puppy-like tendencies for some time beyond that, owners can sometimes expect too much from a puppy that is beginning to take on the appearance of an adult. Stages of activity levels to expect with Boxers: 8 weeks to 4 months old: This is the 'new' puppy stage. Boxer puppies can be very hyper but owners often do not need to help them calm down because they'll plop down when they tire out, which is quite often. At this age, a Boxer can be running around one moment and asleep with his head in the food dish the next. This is a time of exploring and curiosity… the energy level is like a roller-coaster. You'll want to have a solid schedule in place so that a hyper Boxer puppy has more structure to his day. A Boxer will still get a lot of joy from playing and often craves tons of attention from his owners… this is a good thing… that interaction is a big part of proper bonding and instilling proper hierarchy that will lead to a well-behaved dog. Daytime naps are much less at this point, so having a Boxer awake most of the day can lend to feeling as if the dog is always on the go… or at least is restless if you are not available to get him outside and on the go! By this time, all commands should have been taught and the dog should have a good schedule of releasing his energy in burst of exercise… and if this has not been done or if the Boxer is home alone much of the day and has no release, they'll be some behavioral consequences of that. Generally Boxer dogs begin to calm down by the age of 2 years old, though it is a gradual process, as you'll note from above. Issues can arise if these elements are not in place, however it is never too late to take charge and we will go over some steps owners can take to reel in a hyper Boxer dog. Most will indeed act like adults, but this does not mean that you will have a perfectly behaved dog that can handle any situation with grace and refinement. Boxers are as intelligent as a human toddler , hyper aware of their environment and subject to acting hyper or in most cases very restless if healthy methods of releasing energy are not available or encouraged. The adult may have trouble with separation anxiety or may become agitated or overly clingy if he is not offered both physical and mental workouts. He relaxes quite a bit but can still be engaged to take walks, explore and even take on new challenges. Problems of restlessness can arise if the dog has health issues that interfere with his sleeping or if some disrupts his environment. How to Deal with a Hyper Boxer and Calm Him Down The best method to calm a puppy or dog down is to have a routine that preemptively combats hyperactivity before it reaches an uncontrollable level. It is much easier to avoid this state of frenzied behavior than it is to reverse it. Do keep in mind that very young puppies up to about 4 months old cannot really be reined in; they are all over the map and will have short energy bursts followed by deep sleep; it's a temporary stage that will gradually even out. Here are some ways to encourage a calm demeanor: 1 Have the proper confinement method. The confinement method that you use to keep him in one spot will have a big impact on his behavior. If the area is too small, a Boxer can develop overwhelming feelings of being pent up and this can make him very hyper and agitated. It's very stressful for a dog of any age to be confined to a small space. This breed also can have some claustrophobic issues more than others, so this only adds to the issue. When made to stay in a tiny area with not enough room to move around, there are often issues of developing restlessness and anxiety. It can be difficult to calm a Boxer down after he has been let out. If a dog is stressed that he is alone or even if he is just bored, quite a bit of damage can occur as he roams the house, looking for an outlet. Puppies do best with a sectioned off area of a room; the kitchen or living room is often best as they should be close to their humans and not feel as if they are too isolated. Another option for Boxer puppies is an appropriately sized indoor canine playpen. Older Boxer dogs that are housebroken often do best with one room, not having full access to the house. And for those with separation anxiety, being alone in a large empty house if often more stressful than being alone in just one room that has all the needed supplies to keep him safe, happy, fed and occupied. One of the biggest mistakes that owners make is taking a Boxer out once he shows signs of needing to get outside. If you're sitting on the couch, binge watching Games of Thrones and after 3 shows you realize that your Boxer is acting hyper he really doesn't have much interest in whether or not Daenerys will ever actually get Drogon under control and then you say, "Oh, my Boxer could probably use a walk", it's often too late. At that point, the walk will only help a Boxer release the frustration that built up as opposed to the walk being an outlet for a normal level of activity requirements. He will be a bit calmer, but not as calm as he would be had you taken him out in advance of the building agitation. So, the best thing that you can do is to set up a schedule of when you'll engage with your Boxer dog and really try to not miss any sessions or delay them. If there are others in the house, this can be split up between those who are going to be involved with caring for the puppy or dog. There are 3 activities that you'll want to do on a regular basis: Walks - The importance of these are often understated. It may seem as if your Boxer is just ambling along, perhaps even just going along for your sake but this is not true at all. The Boxer is a strong breed that was built for action; he needs to work his muscles and experience the liberty of movement. Super young pups should have all puppy shots before being taken out. For most Boxers, regardless of age, two walks per day are best. The daily amount should 45 minutes for pup and 1 hour for those 1 year and older. These can be broken up in any way that suits your own schedule and time availability. Cardio - Just a 15 minute bout of high intensity action such as Frisbee or fetch once per day can make a huge difference in a Boxer's demeanor, keeping much more calm and happy when he is back in the house. Some owners mistake a Boxer's indifference at seeing a Frisbee as not wanting to engage. However, it is often the level of enthusiasm that an owner displays that will directly impact a Boxer's desire to run. Most love to run and stretching and working the muscles in this way is a great method to keep a Boxer dog in good shape. That hyper and restless activity that you witness when a Boxer is in the house can be channeled into a short session of action that leaves the dog satisfied and both physically and mentally ABLE to be calm. Commands - We going to dive into this a bit more ahead, however taking 15 to 20 minutes a day to work on commands has a triple benefit: 1. You work toward having a well-trained dog which in and of itself is a huge plus. It helps a Boxer learn self-control. When a dog discovers the element of focus and purposely learning, he is then able to self-regulate and this itself can help the dog calm himself down. It helps to establish hierarchy, with you as the clear leader. For any dog to behave well, this is a must. While it is true that Boxers will be much calmer if they have a physical outlet, stimulating the mind plays a huge role as well. Very detailed studies have proven that canines in general have the emotional capacity of 3 year old humans. This is quite telling. Do you have kids? Or have ever spent even an hour with a toddler? They are super hyper, highly inquisitive and importantly are never happy just 'being' for long periods of time. Dogs are the same. Boxers can become hyper if they have nothing to focus on. Just left to 'be', they can get bored and have trouble knowing what to do, so they run around… they quite literally can end up bouncing off the walls in an overly hyper state with no real tools to calm themselves down. Now, if you take that same hyper Boxer dog and he is taken out for walks twice per day, plays one-on-one with his owner once a day AND is given indoor task that require him to use his canine senses, he'll be a much happier and calmer dog. The mention of canine senses is rather vital here…. Dogs have urges to use their sense of smell… to sniff… to explore with their noses …. It's the way it has been for thousands of years and it's a canine urge that is not going to go away no matter how pampered or spoiled a life a dog lives. So dogs have this innate craving to sniff after scents that builds up each day if not allowed to really use this, it can cause a dog to become frustrated. So, an indoor game that involves a Boxer using his sense of smell along with a task that requires focus is often an integral part of preventing hyper behavior and giving a dog a feeling of accomplishment that can work with the other elements to keep him calm. You might be thinking that you'll have to invest in some sort of intricate canine version of Sudoku. Not at all. This is as easy as hiding some treats in the house and encouraging your Boxer dog to find them. As with cardio mentioned earlier, the energy level and enthusiasm of the owner plays a huge part in how eager a Boxer will be to follow through. Speak with in an animated voice and encourage your dog to seek out the hidden treats. Start with easy to find hiding places and then work up to much more difficult sessions. Once a dog learns that it's time to play the game, he often will not give up and will search until he finds his treasure. Advanced sessions can include having the reward be deep in a cardboard box under layers of old towels and safe odds-and-ends and be sure that the treat itself has a strong scent; a good choice is a strip of bacon grease blotted out because most dogs won't bother to move much for a food that they will receive at any rate. Be sure to use a command word such as 'Find' or 'Go Get' and a word to end the session such as 'Good, Find' or 'Good, Get' to establish when this begins and when this ends. You don't have to do this every day; 2 or 3 days a week is usually enough to make a Boxer dog happy and work in conjunction with the other methods to keep hyper behavior at bay and encourage a more calming atmosphere when you just want your dog to settle down. Continued below 4 Have the right collection of toys for your Boxer. Are you guilty of walking out of a dollar store with an armful of cheap dog toys? If so, you may very well then be an owner who wonders why the heck your Boxer isn't just happy having all those toys and would rather run, jump up and spin around the house like a hyper nutcase. When a dog is bored he will do one of three things: Sulk and act depressed, bark or otherwise have disturbing behavior or express agitation. When you invest a few more bucks to obtain sturdy, quality toys that encourage independent play, this can make a huge difference in a dog's general state of mind and his ability to keep himself occupied. Think of someone giving you a paper and pencil compared to paper and a piece Crayon box. Give your Boxer rawhide alternatives that allow him to happily gnaw away or treat-release toys that motivate him to work to gain his reward. There are two huge benefits of teaching a Boxer all basic commands: he will respect you as the true leader and you will have control over his behavior. While a hyper puppy definitely still needs to be walked, engaged and given tasks to stay busy…and a puppy cannot be expected to remain calm all day… when you take the assertive position to give a 'Sit' command that is listened to without hesitation, this can really come in handy if your Boxer is acting hyper around company or when out in public in a store or other area where you really need him to act calm. It's never too early or too late to start working on this. Training for the basics of Sit, Come, Stay, Down, Get or Fetch and Give can start when a Boxer puppy is 8 weeks old and can be taught to older dogs as well. In addition to this, teaching a Boxer to Heel is always advantageous and not only will keep him calm when out on a walk around the neighborhood but will also keep him appropriately by your side in high energy situations where a dog can become hyper just by picking up the vibe of an event. The size of a dog's world is exactly the size that an owner allows it to be. Dogs that are not used to seeing cars and people walking about will often bark like mad when they do actually see them. Dogs that are not used to being out in public will act inappropriately because they have not been exposed enough to know how to stay calm. Dogs that rarely see a visitor to the house will often jump and act overly excited on those few occasions that someone new enters into their territory. Boxers should be gradually exposed to the many situations, places, people and other pets that exist in the world. If you stayed inside your home… only venturing into your yard and nowhere else for years and were suddenly plopped down in to Times Square, you wouldn't be so calm either; that's how dogs feel if they are isolated and not given the opportunity to slowly learn about the world and all that is in it. Go to parks, bring your Boxer along to run errands, bring him hiking, change up the walking routes, take the time to say hello when you pass by another owner with his dog, have him outside with you while you wash the car, bring him to the beach… unless there are big signs saying 'no dogs allowed' bring him along and let him experience the sights and sounds of the world. Hyperkinesis - Being clinically hyperactive is often misdiagnosed. Most dogs simply need the physical and mental releases as we discussed above. These highly sensitive dogs can be set off into a frenzy by everyday simple noises such as microwave beeping or normal household events such as someone zipping down the staircase. For these rare cases, thorough testing must be performed, which should include a 2 to 3 day stay at an veterinary hospital where vitals are monitored, both heart and respiratory rates, when both at rest and when stimuli is introduced. If this is diagnosed, stimulants similar to those that are given to humans with ADHD can be helpful as are vet supervised changes to the diet and possible supplements of L-theanine, GABA and valerian root. Senior Issues - In some cases, a senior dog will be unable to stay calm and this is often related to either cognitive decline, health issues that are causing discomfort or a combination of the two. Physical discomfort often associated with arthritis can cause a dog to have trouble resting or sleeping. Food Allergies - While we have not seen any studies showing specifics, veterinary medicine claims that canines may have food allergies that can lead to abnormal behavior including acting hyper and having an inability to calm down. With all the high levels of chemicals found in many manufactured foods, it's easy to believe this could be the case. When a dog is constantly ingesting artificial coloring, artificial flavoring and all kinds of chemical preservatives, this is not good for physical health and it's not a huge leap from there to a dog's mental health as well. If this is suspected, a change to home cooked food or a switch to a quality commercial brand without these elements should be considered. Summary Boxers are animated, able to express emotion and are great companions. This is not a lazy breed or one that is content to sit alone just 'being'. Expect your Boxer puppy to be hyper and for a Boxer of any age, follow the guidelines for providing proper care which will help your dog channel his energy in a health way. He also had a very special dinner of freshly cooked chicken, sweet potato and green beans, followed by a nice long walk in one of our favourite locations — the perfect day! Now 12 months old, my puppy is growing up into a handsome dog. Likes: Peanut butter, cheese, squeaky balls, tug of war, football, splashing in rivers and running in long grass. Dislikes: Having nails clipped, sweeping brush, rubbish trucks, cows. Pawty time — Happy birthday Bosun! Tips and advice for new puppy parents 1. Puppy training. There are many different training methods so decide which one you are going to follow and stick with it. Puppy classes are a worthy investment in the early weeks and months; most are booked as a 6 week course, so book in advance to avoid missing out and having to wait for the next course to start! Bear in mind most will require puppies to be fully vaccinated in order to socialise with the group. I took Bosun to the Dogs Trust training school , where much of the focus was given to understanding your dogs behaviour and reading their body language. Check locally for classes in your area. Puppy training again. Keep on reinforcing those good behaviours. I could do cartwheels whilst juggling cheese and sausages and still would not be interesting enough to warrant his attention. So I invested in a harness and long line never attach a long line to a collar and went back to basics. There are must haves and nice to haves. Make sure the must haves are ready before bringing puppy home. What are the puppy essentials? Check what your puppy is being fed by the breeder and buy this to begin with. Your puppy may be stressed by the upheaval of leaving home so offer food they are familiar with. Once your puppy has settled, you can gradually change to the food of your choice. Your puppy will want somewhere safe and warm to retreat to for a rest. This could be a in a crate or a cosy corner of a room with a pillow and blanket. Puppy pads or newspaper. You can buy puppy training pads for toilet training which are more absorbent than newspaper and supposedly scented to encourage use, however good old fashioned newspaper is more environmentally friendly and certainly cheaper — ask friends and family to save their newspapers for you so you have a stockpile ready. Toys and chews. Chewing is normal helps relieve anxiety and boredom as well as bringing comfort from teething. It is a legal requirement for dogs to wear ID, not just microchip so get your puppy used to wearing a collar and tag as soon as possible. Grooming products. Some breeds will require daily grooming and so it is important that they get used to a brush early. Grooming is a good way to bond and allows you to inspect your dog for any lumps and bumps and ticks! Venturing outdoors! Going for walks is one of the great pleasures of dog ownership. Bring treats, poo bags and water. Group walks. A great way to socialise, make new friends and explore new places is to join a group walk. Search on Facebook for local, like minded groups in your area. I still use the long line with Bosun unless we are familiar with the dogs on the field and know they are happy to run and play. The line gives him some freedom whilst providing me with some security in case his recall fails. Meeting in an organised group gives him an opportunity to learn how to behave around other dogs in a planned way. The next 12 months… Bosun will be joining the family on his first camping trip and there will be a blog on this to follow! We will have to make a decision around castration and I would like for him to learn to swim. Until next time, woof! Irish showed no signs of illness prior to Saturday, September 8th. Saturday, late morning he started having trouble getting up and dragged his back leg. It broke my heart to see him like that. I was so encouraged and glad he was feeling better. Monday morning we were still concerned and Tim took Irish in to see the Vet and he discovered a tumor and cancer of the prostrate. He was scheduled to come back to the Vet the next morning at a. He tried all day and evening to urinate and nothing would come out. The next day, September 11th was his 9th Birthday. He was on my lap that evening for a couple of hours and slept as I petted him. He felt that it was time. We were both sobbing uncontrollably and were with Irish as he took his final breath. He went quickly and we were with him but I will never forget that. It was horrible and it was agonizingly painful for both of us. Even to the end he was kissing us and wagging his tail. I walked around the first day numb, in shock and crying. I cried the next day and the day after that. Our home feels empty without him and our other dog Bailey kept looking for Irish the first few days. He misses him too. Irish was my first dog and I loved him so much. I had no idea of the pain and sadness I would feel upon his passing. It is overwhelming. I read as much as I could about grieving over the loss of a dog, searching for anything that would help me, to ease the pain. I talked a lot about it with Tim and with friends, I cried, I screamed that first day alone in my car with the windows up, and it all helped. It helped to talk about it with friends who cared and understood — who were also dog lovers. It helped to cry and it helped to scream. Tim and I talk about Irish all the time and we miss him — he filled the house with his presence. With each passing day the pain has gotten better. I try to keep busy and I try hard to remember happy memories and not the memories of his last day. I can talk about Irish without crying now, I can smile at funny things he did and I can smile when I look at all the pictures I have taken of him over the years. I miss him so much and I think I probably will always miss him but the pain is slowly lessening and I can now laugh again. As part of grieving, I read a suggestion to write a tribute. A Tribute for Irish follows; an ingredient for a recipe of healing. All that changed within a short span of 30 minutes. There were two Boxer puppies left; one was all white and the other, soon to become my first dog was a beautiful little fawn boy who we named Irish. Tim drove and I held Irish in my lap. The moment that changed my life forever occurred within 30 minutes. Irish settled comfortably in my lap and to my utter amazement and astonishment he looked up with his puppy blue eyes directly into my eyes. It was love at first sight, so to speak, and from that moment on he was endeared to my heart. Oh … he was such a bad puppy! He chewed our bay window and door moldings, and chewed my shoes! That was forgotten as he turned into such a good loving dog. As a puppy and young dog Irish was so full of energy and playfulness! When I would let him outside he would run and run and run around the yard going faster and faster. It seemed he had an endless supply of energy. He loved to play ball and was really, really good at it! We would throw the ball high in the air and he could catch it out of the air. One of his many nick names was ball ball doggie. He could play ball for hours. When we were inside the house he was always bringing us balls or toys to play tug with. I would chase him around the dining room table and house and try to catch him. When I got a new cell phone and tried out the different ring tones for some reason that made him howl … it was so funny when he did that. Irish loved flowers! When we were outside often times we would see Irish smelling the flowers! When I was gardening I had to make sure I kept my gardening gloves close by otherwise he would pick them up in his mouth and run with them. He was such a clown and made us laugh. He was always at the door to greet me with his wagging tail when I came home. I would often tease Tim that Irish was happier to see me than he was! Irish followed me around the house and always wanted to go outside with me — he loved laying in the sun and walks around the neighborhood. He was so full of life and energy. As Irish got older he slowed down but still liked to play. He was fascinated with our laser light and would chase it and try to pounce on it. It was hysterical to watch. He was a great companion to our other dog Bailey and the two became very close. He and Bailey chased squirrels in the yard. It was comical to watch because before they ran after the squirrels Irish would look at Bailey, and Bailey would look at Irish it was their sign and off running they would go to chase the squirrels! Irish would bark at everyone that walked by letting them know he was here! He was very protective of me. Irish was so loving and sensitive to my feelings. One day I had been upset and I was sitting near him crying, he came over and put his paws on my shoulders and looked at me as if to comfort me. He was amazing — that is a moment I will forever remember. Irish, you have left my life, but you will never leave my heart. Stretches from 4" to 8" wide in diameter. Good for large dogs. Add source If you've ever seen a boxer dog breed specimen, you know that they have two, very different sides. On one side there's this amazingly athletic, handsome and very bright dog, on the other - there's this constantly salivating, adorable goofball of a funny dog. And you know darn well, that all of the boxer dogs have both of their sides polished to perfection. However, boxers are not only good for being an excellent family pet due to their friendliness and intelligence, but these dogs can also take part in police K9 units and were even used in wars as message and pack carriers, attack and guard dogs. So the same as with their double-sided silly dog personality, these canines are also very versatile in their working fields. We here at Bored Panda have compiled a list that celebrates the foolishness of funny boxers, by showing all the hilarious and awkward situations these weird dogs can find themselves in.
