German Shepherds are considered to be moderately active. They need just about as much exercise as dogs of a similar size. This breed is well-known for being heavily devoted to their people and easy to train. When trained properly, they will absolutely listen. However, they do have innate protective instincts. If you want to dog that is going to be protective of their family, this is a great choice. These canines do need extensive socialization starting at a young age, though. Otherwise, they can become a bit too protective of their family and territory. These canines are not the friendliest. They are people-oriented, but not with strangers. They tend to be quite unsure with strangers. At best, they usually ignore them completely. Other times, they may be obviously uncomfortable. German Shepherds have high prey drive. On the one hand that means that you can easily motivate them with a ball or tug toy. On the other hand, it requires a lot of supervision for owners that have small dogs or cats in addition to their shepherd. While your dog might not outright try to fight with a cat or smaller dog, he could even accidentally hurt them during play. They are extremely intelligent and devoted to their owners. Unlike some dog breeds, they will listen to their owners in most real-life situations. They can learn a variety of different commands very easily and will actually do them when asked. However, these dogs do need the training. Without it, they can be overly protective and even potentially dangerous. Their ease of training does make fulfilling this need quite easy, though. We do recommend puppy classes starting at a very young age. These classes provide the extra socialization that your dog needs, as well as allows you to jumpstart their training. We only recommend private classes for dogs that are too reactive around strangers and other dogs to thrive in a group class. Usually, only German Shepherds who were not properly socialized as puppies will fit into this category. If you adopt an older German Shepherd that seems in need of socialization, we recommend taking private classes with an experienced trainer. You can work your dog through some basic commands and then work on socializing them with safe people and dogs. The trainer should be able to help you in this regard. The German Shepherd is a more active breed, and completely black German Shepherds are not different. While there are more active dog breeds out there, these canines are best for those that are quite active. They need at least two medium-to-long walks per day. Puppies will likely need some extra play sessions as well. Health and Care German Shepherds are pretty healthy as far as purebred dogs come. However, they are prone to some health problems. Many of these are due to the inbreeding that occurred early in the breed, which made some previously rare traits more common. Black German Shepherds are not known to have any more health problems than their black-and-tan cousins. Their coat coloration is not associated with any particular health issues or anything of that sort. It is important to purchase these dogs from a qualified breeder, as they tend to perform plenty of health testing on any dog they plan on breeding. This helps them recognize health problems and pick only the healthiest dogs possible for producing litters. We do recommend purchasing a German Shepherd that was bred as a working dog — not one produced as a show dog. These two lines of dogs are somewhat distinct as they have been bred for two very different purposes. Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. It is likely that they are genetically predispositioned to it. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs in German Shepherds as well. This condition is usually treated with medication and pancreatic supplements. It is most likely genetic, so health testing and keeping track of pedigrees is important to eliminating it in the breed. Medium-coated dogs will only need brush two to three times a week. Long coats will need combed through at least once a day to prevent mats. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. As a common breed, they are usually cheaper than most. It may be tempting to cut corners and purchase a cheaper puppy. However, this is not recommended, especially when it comes to German Shepherds. These puppies need socialized from the moment they are born. Often, breeders put in this time and effort. We highly recommend only purchasing puppies form very experienced breeders. Otherwise, you may end up with an unsocialized puppy and a troublesome temperament. You should always ask about the pedigree of the parents, as well as the health testing the breeder has done. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. Despite their unusual colorations, these dogs are very similar to all other German Shepherds. They have the same temperament and work great as guard dogs. You have to prepare to train and socialize them properly. They require quite a bit more work than other breeds, but it is absolutely worth it in the end. How to Help Your Dog If you have a dog , you probably already know they can express their feelings like humans do. That means your little pup can become sad and withdrawn when they are stressed out, which can lead to depression if it lingers for too long. To get them feeling happy and relaxed again , you might want to meet with a vet to see what's going on—and to rule out any physical conditions. You can also try a few habit changes and lifestyle tweaks to get them back to normal. I see depression a lot in dogs whose families have gone through a divorce," says Dr. Ochoa adds that dogs can get very attached to people and other pets, so when these relationships change, they can show signs of depression. If you think your dog is down in the dumps, here are the signs to look for and ways to help perk them back up. Fatigue "Most dogs that are depressed will lay around more and not really want to interact with other people in the house," says Ochoa. It could be their age, but if it's suddenly come on, or they're sleeping way too often, then it might be depression. Try to play with your dog using their favorite toy or take them for a walk. Changes in Appetite Sad and stressed dogs may also not want to eat or drink. So, look for any change from the normal diet and cravings. They could also be gaining weight. Try and take your dog for a walk," says Rossouw. And look at their calorie intake. Are you feeding them too much? They might be getting too much food compared to the exercise they're doing, which would be unrelated to stress and sadness. Hiding and Withdrawing If your pup is disappearing or withdrawing to odd places in the home, they could be feeling stressed or sad. This is a common sign seen with depressed dogs," says Ochoa. Try playing a game or giving them more attention to make them feel happier and more relaxed. Licking Its Feet When a dog is depressed they may lick their feet. Constant licking and grooming is a sign that your dog is trying to comfort themselves. If your pup has been self-grooming a lot over a long period of time, it may be a sign of something else. If you've ruled out any medical issues, then I'd recommend getting your dog back into a routine, and playing games with them to stimulate their mind," says Rossouw. They might not jump up and down when you get their leash, run to the door or react when you try and get them to take a walk, according to Steffi Trott , a professional dog trainer, and owner of SpiritDog Training. The same goes for their dog pals, too. Exuberance is a common sign of dog-to-dog play, and if it is missing, your dog may be depressed," adds Trott. If your dog shows the above signals, take him to the vet to make sure he does not have an underlying condition," advises Trott. If something has recently changed a move, another dog in the family died, the schedule is different, etc. Make sure to keep your daily schedule on track as much as possible, since routines make dogs feel safe and secure. And "give your dog plenty of time to rest, and a comfortable and snuggly space to do so. Feeling well-rested and relaxed will make your dog much happier," adds Trott. You can also plan an adventurous outing. Cheer him up with a fun activity," encourages Trott. Like humans, dogs can feel down and depressed. If you notice a change in your pup's mood, set up an appointment with your vet to rule out any physical reasons behind the change. Also, assess any lifestyle changes that may be contributing to the sadness, and be proactive in making sure your pup is getting plenty of exercise and attention and has some sort of routine. We humans each have to deal with our share of sadness, and we know exactly what a sad expression from another person looks like. And sometimes dogs also have experiences which would make us sad. And naturally we want to alleviate those feelings. But first we need to understand what made them sad in the first place. We rely heavily on facial expressions to recognize sadness in other humans. Unhappy people have downcast faces, they frown, and they might cry. Sometimes dogs have faces which look sad too. Does this mean they feel sad on the inside as well? Not necessarily! Some dogs just look sad Some dogs have faces which just look sad, no matter how they actually feel. This seems especially true of dogs with very wrinkly faces, such as Pugs and Bulldogs. Perhaps their wrinkles remind us of a human frown. And some dogs might be having you on! Domestic dogs have two small muscles which work to raise their inner eyebrows: the levator anguli oculi medialis muscle and the retractor anguli oculi lateralis muscle try saying those names five times quickly! It is highly unlikely this happened by coincidence. A sad dog may: be disinterested and unresponsive to things going on around them let their tail hang limply between their legs keep their gaze lowered and not look for eye contact make slow, subdued movements lose interest in toy or games shed more than usual and sleep more. Why Is My Dog Sad? The things which can make our dogs unhappy include: Illness Lots of the signs of an unhappy dog can be symptoms of a physical illness too. For example, a dog suffering severe joint pain from hip dysplasia or arthritis might go off their food and lose interest in exercise. And of course, any sort of illness can make them sad about feeling unwell. So if your dog is out of sorts, arrange a consultation with your vet to rule out underlying medical causes. Grief Dogs are a social species. Even their wild ancestors relied on strength in numbers for survival, and domestic dogs are capable of forming close emotional bonds with humans as well as other dogs. When dogs lose a person or pet they were closely bonded to, they go through a process like grief, which can include elements of sadness, depression, increased anxiety and stress. Loneliness Your dog can also feel sad if they suddenly have to start spending more time alone. For example if you get a new job, your shifts change, or if a kid who always used to play with them gets old enough to move out. Moving house Dogs are happiest and most confident when they know exactly what to expect from their environment and their routine. Moving house can be very unsettling for dogs. And finding themselves immersed in an unfamiliar territory can make them lose their spark for a bit. Arrival of a new pet or family member Babies, puppies and kittens all throw previously well-established routines out of the window. Even a new partner or housemate moving in can change the dynamic between a dog and their family. These changes in routine, or the amount of attention they get, can make a dog feel frustrated, or just sad. But all dogs are different, and some react with sadness. Lack of purpose So many of our modern dog breeds, including Labradors, were originally bred to work. They used to spend long days working in close cooperation with a human handler to perform a job. And each new generation was bred from the individuals who were best at doing that job. But their working ability is still hardwired into their DNA. And a lack of purpose can leave them feeling lost, and well, a little bit sad. Can Dogs Sense Sadness? There is lots of evidence that dogs mimic the body language of other dogs , which is regarded as the first building blocks of empathy. And there have been studies in the past where participating dogs were recorded sniffing, nuzzling and licking a stranger who was pretending to cry. The researchers attributed this combination of hormonal and behavioral responses to rudimentary cross-species empathy. All of which supports the idea that dogs can not only sense when we are sad, but they share in our sadness with us. Including the subtle nuances, like whether it passes quite quickly or stays with us for a long time. Here are 8 ways to restore them back to their happy selves: 1. Unless their vet says otherwise, dogs need an opportunity for exercise every day. Walking the same route every time can sap our enthusiasm for doing this, so keep a list of places you can go and refer back to it if you get stuck in a rut. In this case, look into dog strollers, or drive them somewhere and let them take in the view with the windows down when you get there. Get creative with toys Toys and games can check the physical stimulation box and mental stimulation box all in one go. Get Training Training and training games are a great way to mimic the working relationship Labradors are hardwired to want with us. They create a sense of purpose which dogs find very satisfying. Mistreated Depression in Labradors There are several things that can cause a temporary or clinical, long-term depression in Labradors. If an owner or pet-friend dies, Labs will often become obviously sad. Their behavior changes and can be very worrisome to their owner. If you know that your dog has lost a pal, then you can sometimes just give him a couple weeks. I am no expert, but there seems to be a legit mourning period for dogs just like there is for people. Sometimes only time can fix those types of hurts. On the other hand, if you cannot figure out why your dog is moping around and refusing to eat, then you should get him to the vet as soon as possible. Bored Labradors were bred to be very active dogs. They need a serious amount of exercise. This is a ticket for one on a long guilty trip. Get your dog outside and go have some fun. One trip outside with a really good, long round of fetch, and your Lab will be back to his happy old self. You should consider 45 to 60 minutes of hard exercise an absolute must for full-grown Labs. Illness Apparent sadness can be an indicator that your dog does not feel well. An upset stomach or sore legs can slow a Labrador down and put a damper on their typical upbeat attitude. If you think your dog might be sick or sore, give her a gentle rub down. If you find a gentle spot, then you may have found the root cause as to why your Lab is sad. Bad Diet Just like trying to put gasoline in a diesel engine; a bad diet will slow down a Labrador. Remember, Labradors are bred for high octane energy. But if you are giving your dog lousy fuel, she will not be able to go at her typical high speed. She will lack the energy to do what she really wants to do—run and chase and run some more. Mistreated This is the worst kind of dog sadness—neglect and abuse. Dogs that have been neglected for long periods of time will develop a mistrust of people. When it comes to Labrador Retrievers, they are typically a very trusting dog. In fact, I believe that in order to be truly happy, Labs need strong relationships with the people in their lives. If they are robbed of those bonds, it will cause these typically friendly, happy dogs to become depressed and sad. It is not uncommon to find rescue Labs with this forlorn, sad look on their face. Their eyes can seem unusually shallow or hollow. The great news is that it usually only takes an extended experience with a loving family to restore the life to their eyes and their behavior.
