This combination aimed to retain the courage and tenacity of the Bulldog, while adding more speed and agility from the Terrier. Size of a Standard Bully Pit Bulls typically weigh between pounds for males and pounds for females, and have a life expectancy of years. While Pit Bulls can be excellent dogs when properly trained and socialized from a young age, they can be stubborn and bossy if not given the proper guidance. Due to their reputation in illegal dog fighting, the classic bully dog is often misunderstood, despite the fact that the vast majority of Pit Bulls that are properly raised and trained make excellent pets. With a large variety of colorations available, these pups come in all shapes and sizes for those who want something unique. Their short coats can come in smooth or rough textures depending on the breed type adopted; however, shedding is minimal, so upkeep should not be a problem for potential pet owners. Regarding the height and weight of micro pocket bully dogs, males and females can differ in size. The typical male micro bully stands between inches tall and weighs between pounds. Females are usually smaller, standing closer to inches tall and weighing pounds. Micro bullies are categorized as a miniature version of the mini American Bully breed. They have short fur, a thick neck and broad chest, strong jaws and wide heads compared to their bodies. Regarding their weight, you should feel that your micro bully is solid but not overweight — if anything, they should be lean like an athlete! Micro Bully Characteristics The American Bully has a stunning appearance that many adore, and the Micro is no exception. Their face will be large, round, and pushed in somewhat, with well-defined cheeks. Their blocky head will resemble an American Pitbull Terrier, with short, sleek, and perky ears falling forward softly. As with the other Bully breeds, their shoulders will be big, wide, and strong. Most people are unaware that the Bully dog was designed to have a low hunting drive and to be a family pet. Although their disposition is well-liked by many, there are a few factors to consider before purchasing your Micro Exotic Bully puppies. How Much Are Micro Bullies? Are Micro Bullies Healthy? Many dog breeds are vulnerable to health problems owing to heredity, and the American Bully puppies are no exception. When introducing a Micro Bully into the family, it is crucial to understand what might happen to assess whether or not it is something you can handle. As previously said, working with a respected breeder can ensure pure bloodlines and fewer common health complications. Some of the health issues that your Bully may be susceptible to include: Dysplasia of the Hips and Elbows Unfortunately, there is little that can be done to screen for dysplasia. This disorder develops due to aberrant joint development, resulting in limping, pain, and trouble moving. Skin Disorders Bully dogs are prone to various curable skin problems, including hot spots, eczema, and seborrhea. Consult your veterinarian about treatments and shampoos for these aggravating dermatological disorders. Congenital Heart Disease Because the Micro is a Bully breed, they are prone to congenital heart problems. Mitral valve, septal abnormalities, and subaortic and pulmonary stenosis are all common cardiac problems in the Bulldog family. Micros and Cherry Eyes The Nictitans glands prolapse causes pain, ocular irritation, and visual impairment owing to blockage. Because the Micro Bully is a newly described Pocket Pitbull, its lifetime is unknown. It is important to note that this can vary greatly when improper breeding procedures are employed, which is sadly prevalent owing to the value of a Micro Bully. What is a Teacup Micro Bully? A teacup micro bully is a small breed of dog bred to have physical characteristics similar to those of the American Bully breeders but smaller. However, breeding for tiny size can result in several health problems, such as a higher risk of congenital disabilities, developmental issues, and other health issues related to the exaggeration of certain physical traits. When considering bringing any breed of dog into your home, it is essential to do thorough research and choose a reputable breeder who puts the health and welfare of their dogs first. A breeder must adhere to rigorous breeding regulations for their puppies to be designated Micro Bullies. As a result, the breeder will consider the entire stud feed when calculating the ultimate cost per puppy birth. Online, you may find an example of stud fees. The fact that Micro Pitbulls are small does not imply that they are cheap. In reality, the reverse is true! Furthermore, few breeders specialize in Micro Pitbulls because of their newness and scarcity. As a result, the few breeders specializing in Micro Bullies can now charge higher prices than in the past. This is a personal choice, but there are a few crucial factors to consider if you purchase one. Reputable Breeder You should expect the breeder to be able to give you information about their ancestors as well as a complete medical history. Meeting the parents is also crucial since they will assist you in knowing what you are purchasing. The AKC offers comprehensive information on what to look for here. As a result, it is not advised for novice owners. This promotes increased breeding and further health issues for future generations. While they might be healthy, it is essential to note that they were produced as show dogs by professional breeders. Because of their increasing popularity, most puppies presently being produced are bred by people looking to profit from their high price tag. Our website is all about Pitbull dogs. Therefore, the Micro Bully will keep its strong Bully stature and physique but is made to be even smaller through the breeding of another Terrier. These crosses are known to many as Exotic Bully breeds, and they have been recognized as a breed since around ; the Micro Bully is the newest on the scene. This dog breed lineage is highly desired as they are beautiful, intelligent, and family-friendly dogs. Like other designer-crossed breeds such as the Labradoodle and Cockapoo, crossing the American Bully with the Patterdale Terrier dog breed allows you to keep the features you know and love while also including other desirable characteristics. As a result, more and more people want to own this incredible mix that gets you the strongest and smallest version of a Bully dog available today. What Is a Bully Dog? American Bully dogs were first bred in the s in the United States but did not become a recognized breed until .A Bully Dog is a general way to describe a variety of dogs with a particularly muscular and blockish look. You may wonder what the difference is between all the different Exotic Bully breed types with the American Bully bloodlines. Since this is a relatively new breed and its standards are not entirely set in stone, you can turn to Bully breed authorities such as the American Bully Kennel Club to help define the main differences in breed types. It is important to note that the Micro, Standard, Pocket, and XL Bullies are essentially the same dog and are only differentiated by height. The Classic Bully, however, is also differentiated by its type. Exaggerated Appearance The Exotic Bully's features are that of the Bully breeds but made even more apparent. The muscular build is more defined, the blocky head is more prominent, and the muzzles are closer to the face. This is why their looks are captivating and intriguing to many as a physically exaggerated version of several Bully breeds. These dogs share the same body type as the other Bullies, but they often have more muscle mass due to their larger size. You can expect an XL to weigh somewhere from lbs. There is another subcategory of the XL Bully, which is its taller and heavier counterpart, the XXL, which can weigh up to lbs. What is the American Bully Standard Size? What is the Classic Bully Size? The Classic Bully dog is considered a different type of dog altogether because they still look like an American Bully, but they are smaller in stature and muscle mass. What size is a Pocket Bully? Although sometimes known as a Shorty Bully or Pocket Pitbull, this dog still has all the beautiful and strong characteristics that Bully breed owners desire. What is the size of a Micro Bully? The Micro Bully is considered to be a subcategory of the Pocket Bully dog. Although small, their strong and muscled physique still makes them solid and heavy pups. These dogs were bred to inherit the strong and broad muscular physique of the Exotic Bully breeds, but in a smaller and more compact form which makes them a great addition to any home and family, especially for those with a smaller house or yard. Your new playful and sweet Micro Bully will fit right in with you anywhere in your home, most likely on your couch or in your bed! Essentially, these designer dog breeds look to be smaller versions of the Pitbull and are also sometimes known as Miniature Pitbulls. But be sure not to confuse the two, as the Pitbull and American Bully are two completely separate breeds. Puppy prices will vary based on your plan for the dog. If you want to purchase a dog from a highly respected bloodline to breed them, you can be sure it will cost a lot more than a puppy you want to have as a family pet. Always be sure you get your dog from a reputable breeder, as many people will falsely advertise a bigger Bully as a Micro Bully. Micro Bully Physical Characteristics The American Bully has a beautiful look that many people fall in love with, and the Micro is no different. Their face will be broad, round, and slightly pushed in with well-defined cheeks. Their blocky head will look much like the American Pitbull Terrier, with small, sleek, and perky ears that gently flop forward. Their shoulders will be broad, wide, and muscular, as you would expect with the other Bully breeds. To the average onlooker, their coat will look like what would be expected from the American Bully Breed. Still, in reality, some Micro Bullies will have a wiry undercoat that can be passed down from the Patterdale Terrier side of their lineage. Markings will vary from dog to dog and will be determined by which dogs are bred together; the possibilities are endless! Many reputable breeders will agree on some of the following characteristics being part of what makes a clean Exotic Bully: Clean Exotics will be under 13" in height. Their muzzle will be under 1. The Clean Exotic movement comes from many reputable breeders and passionate Bully community members who want to see the breed have more beautiful dogs showing the correct features and minimal health defects. Unbeknownst to most, the Bully dog was bred to have a low prey drive and be a family companion. Although their temperament is loved by many, there is still a lot to consider when thinking about owning your very own Micro Exotic Bully. Shedding Misinformation about Bullies Given their appearance, many people assume that a Bully dog will be aggressive or vicious, but those who know the breed say that they are incredibly loving and make a great family dog. The unfortunate stigma that has plagued the breeds means that it is more important than ever to practice responsible ownership, which entails training your dog well enough to ensure that only their best loving and obedient features come through. Many Bully breeds have been mistakenly called aggressive due to their history of dog fighting, but when trained and raised correctly, you will find that the bully breeds are not at all aggressive. Thankfully, the Bully community continues to educate the public about these incredible dogs and show that the bad reputation is often completely untrue. As with all dog breeds, it is important to socialize and adequately train them from a young age to ensure their playful and sweet personalities come forth from day one. It cannot be stressed enough that early socialization is essential as your dog will be physically strong due to its genetics. Be sure to be a responsible owner and train your dog well to prevent perpetuating any mistaken beliefs. Although the Pocket Bully and the Micro Bully are known for their smaller size, it is important to note that these dogs are still highly energetic and need lots of attention and room to play. You will find that the Bully breeds are incredibly loyal, protective, playful, and great with children. To ensure your dog lives a long, happy, and healthy life, it's vital to ensure they are fed a proper diet, get plenty of exercise, have regular checkups from their vet, and receive love and affection! Like all dogs, boredom will most likely lead to destructive behaviors that will have your dog damaging your belongings or, even worse, injuring themselves. With sufficient outside time through walks and playtime, your pup will also benefit from the added mental stimulation from toys, bones, and puzzle-style feeding bowls. A physically and mentally exercised Bully will be a content and well-behaved dog! Our readers are loving this sprinkler toy to keep their dogs active and hydrated at the same time!

Exercises Grooming From ancient Germany precisely around the 19th century had the now extinct mastiff breed Bullenbeisser and bulldogs brought in from England. At the time of their arrival, they served as hunting dogs for bears, deer, and other ferocious beasts, it would capture the prey with the help of its awesome teeth and detain it until the hunter arrives. And in the first boxer standard club was launched with a comprehensive document that is still in use today. Shortly after, the breed made its way into other European countries and got into the U. S in the late 19th century with the American Kennel Club taking registration of its first boxer around .During the first world war, boxers played the role of a military dog as a pack-carrier, a guard dog, and an attack dog, later they were taken home by the soldiers and got introduced into the domestic world as a show dog, best companion, and a reliable guard. One with so much life, energetic, curious, attentive, active, smart, sociable and incredible fun with children is the boxer, they are also known to be very patient and highly protective of their family members making them the love and desire of many homes. As active dogs, they need a lot of exercise to keep them mentally fit, apparently having a mind of its own, you will find your boxer entertain itself by digging the ground often, chewing, and licking the mouth to beat boredom. They are also very stubborn in character which makes them a terrible choice for first-timers with dogs, they are generally a bit difficult with adult dogs including dogs of a similar breed but friendly with puppies. They usually do not bark unless there is a genuine reason behind it but they love to growl. If you have occupied home with people around all the time or you want a canine buddy the whole time, then a boxer is just the perfect breed to get. Being a highly active dog, they dread loneliness and they can cope finely in both a house and an apartment as long as you provide it with enough room and spaces for exercises and activities. What you must have is a large yard if you are living in a house for it to dig the ground and run around as it likes. And more so, if you are given to being away from home most of the time, getting a boxer may not be the best for you and the dog, because they usually get aggressive when left alone. Boxers are known as loud snorers and they drool greatly too. Boxers are playful and very energetic dogs as such regular exercises are part of a good canine relationship, especially a breed of this sort. Your boxer should be allowed to play in a fenced area and on-leashed since it is likely to jump and leap around in excitement. This puts a boxer as a bad choice for a frail owner as they may find it a tad impossible and daunting keeping up with its excessive activity demands. Being a breed with a short and thin coat its grooming demands are quite easy and little, all it needs is a light brushing of the hair twice every week to maintain its good and gleeful looks. Bathing should be a once in a while since boxers are generally clean dogs and its nails, be trimmed once every month or as often as they grow worn on surfaces, its teeth should also be brushed daily to avoid tartar formation and other dental crises. Our Boxer puppies for sale come from either USDA licensed commercial breeders or hobby breeders with no more than 5 breeding mothers. Comet Found his forever home Home: Gallery Just a few of the wonderful families who love our puppies. We had a boxer that we bought from a breeder in our area but they were no longer breeding. We wanted to make sure that our puppy would be healthy and not inbred. There were many boxers available in our area, but they were not from recommended breeders. We were one of the first people to call about the puppies and they were only a couple days old. Shannon was a big help in picking out our little girl, Kaiyah. We had to decide mainly from pictures since we live 3 hours away. We went to see her and put our deposit down a week later. Shannon was able to answer any questions we had and the puppies were very well cared for. The Mother and Father were both there for us to meet and were well mannered. When we got her home and took her to the vet, he was very pleased. He raves about her every time she is there and tells us what a beautiful boxer she is. He wanted to know where we got her and told us that the breeders did a very good job. The Duncan family I have been a Boxer lover for 24 years. Needless to say, it took awhile to think about getting another addition to our family. My other boxer girl was so lonely we decided to start looking for a brother for her. My husband came across Shannon's name in the paper, so we checked out her website. I immediately fell in love with a male, by the time I called he was already picked by another gentleman. So with careful thought we took the ride to see the other male, to our delight we got to meet Shannon, Jack and Tesla and Reyes, what beautiful dogs, when we met our male it was destiny, he high fived my husband, we were sold. Another reason I knew we were taking Jaxson is Shannon was very knowledgeable about this wonderful breed, and she had both parents and puppies on organic food, that was very important to me, as knowing the breed the way I do, I know they thrive on the better foods. So time will tell. Thank you Shannon for keeping this wonderful breed alive, we will keep in touch forever. I wanted a puppy that came from a loving home where the parents were family pets. I found lots of puppies that appealed to me in looks, but for 1 reason or another, did not feel comfortable with the breeder. When we arrived for our visit, we met the parents of the puppies; both were beautiful, friendly, well cared for, family dogs. She is absolutely the best dog! From the moment we left with her, she never cried or whined at being separated from her Mom or littermates. I think she knew she was with her family! She loves nothing more than being where we are. Shelby is a happy, healthy, funny, beautiful, energetic girl who brings joy to our lives every day. Orchard Park is 3 hours away, but was well worth the trip! I would definitely contact Shannon again when we are ready for another boxer baby!

While the name of this breed is the French Bulldog, their origins cannot be credited to only France. One of the facts about French Bulldogs is that the idea and reason for the creation of the breed originated in England. This adorable dog breed, which has always been meant to be a companion, started as a miniature version of the English Bulldog. This mini-version accompanied lace workers across the English Channel and into France during the Industrial Revolution. Once the dog breed became prominent in France, the subsequent successful crossbreeding of the English Bulldog, Pug, and Terrier led to the creation of the modern-day Frenchie. The French Bulldog we know today originally came to the United States with groups of wealthy Americans who came across them and fell in love while touring Europe in the late s. The French Bulldog was recognized by the American Kennel Club in and is a member of the non-sporting group. The French Bulldog is an easygoing, affectionate, and playful dog that loves their family and gets along well with children. They also love to make new friends, which means they get along well with other dogs, animals, and people. Intelligent and affectionate, this small dog breed certainly wins over hearts and earns its status as a popular companion dog. Frenchies are not known to bark much, unless you train them into it, but they are naturally alert and make excellent watchdogs. As long as they are well-socialized and trained, they tend to have an open and friendly nature. The Frenchie is a highly adaptable dog that pretty much adapts to any living situation that includes plenty of love and attention. Being a short-snouted, snub-nosed dog breed, they do not tolerate heat very well and are also sensitive to cold. This tends to make them one of the dog breeds that hate winter and you will want to make sure to bundle them up to stay warm while out on cold winter walks. Because Frenchies bond closely with their families and thrive on attention from them, they do not tolerate long periods of time alone. They can also be prone to developing separation anxiety if they are poorly socialized or you do not work with them on this when they are young. Potential health concerns to be aware of in French Bulldogs can include cataracts, cherry eye, and entropion. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances. Heart and joint certifications are recommended for this breed. Playful and happy, the French Bulldog is a great fit for a novice dog owner. They are sweet-tempered, eager to please, and eager to train. Occasionally, Frenchies can be stubborn and they do tend to have big personalities. Although this can sometimes be a challenge for first-time dog owners, it can usually be overcome with consistent and patient training. Puppy training classes are always an option and offer plenty of benefits aside from training. Standard coat colors for Frenchies are Brindle, Cream, Fawn, and combinations of these. They have a short coat that will shed a little year-round. Nail trims once or twice a month keep nails from growing too long and causing issues. Weekly ear checks, along with careful cleanings as needed, can help prevent ear infections. As a small dog breed, the Frenchie is more prone to developing gum disease. Daily dental care plus cleanings at the vet as needed can help prevent this and other painful dental diseases later in life. You will also need to take care of the wrinkles. Frenchies have hereditary face wrinkles and it is important to keep them clean and dry to prevent skin irritation or possible infection. The French Bulldog is an easygoing companion breed. They can be one of the laziest dog breeds that are couch potatoes. Frenchies will often be energetic when they play and will try to match their activity to yours. So, if you live a more active lifestyle, you need to be careful that your French Bulldog is not overexerting themselves trying to keep up with you. As a Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog, they cannot cool themselves as easily and are extra sensitive to heat. They can also get winded easily, so be aware of this when playing with your dog or puppy and watch for signs of overexertion. There are safe ways to exercise flat-faced dogs and you can work with your vet on specifics for your Frenchie if needed. French Bulldogs usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Frenchies generally live for years on average. With this dog breed being so popular, there are plenty of celebrities who have chosen the French Bulldog as their companion, which also means there are plenty of famous Frenchies out there. Maintain this schedule for at least three weeks before decreasing the number of potty breaks. Establishing good habits takes time, but consistency will teach your pup to trust and depend on you. Use a Leash Using a leash during potty training kills two birds with one stone. But, you can also use these short sessions to reinforce leash training by giving treats for staying close, not pulling, and for walking in a straight line. Pro tip: Even if you have a fenced-in backyard, teach your dog to go potty along the fence line or near bushes. Pooping in low-foot traffic areas will save you and houseguests from stepping in poop in the future. While praise is a reward in itself your dog just wants to make you happy, after all , treats are an excellent motivator. Take your pup to a dog-friendly indoor place. Common dog-friendly locales include: Pet stores Farm supply and feed stores Breweries and wineries Make sure to bring clean-up supplies in the event of an accident poop bags, paper towels, and Clorox wipes. Let your pup relieve themselves outside before you go inside, walk your pup around the store while reinforcing and rewarding good leash behavior , and take them back outside just in time for another potty break. Plus, you can get in some valuable leash training and socialization time. A chocolate Toy Poodle eating from a ceramic bowl Potty Pads are Your Friend During the first few weeks of puppy parenthood, accidents are inevitable. In the meantime, place potty pads in strategic locations around the house. Regular treats can be high-calorie, and even cut into small pieces, they can still be pretty calorie-dense. Create and Maintain a Safe Space Before you bring your pup home for the first time, make sure they have a safe space to sleep, get comfortable, eat, and play with their toys in peace. Provide treats for going inside, and begin closing the door for short periods to acclimate them to the space. This early reinforcement is critical for: Reinforcing that their crate is a safe space That being alone is okay Start small: Leave your pup in their safe space for five minutes three times per day and at bedtime on the first day. Repeat this for a second day, and increase the sessions by five minutes every other day until your dog can calmly and without accidents stay in its crate for an hour. But, the time spent is worth every minute: After a few weeks of intensive training, your pup will be a seasoned master of outside potty breaks! Keeping Your Home Healthy and Clean These two objectives require that your pet or toy poodle be house-trained. It may take a little time, but you can potty train your dog so that your home remains healthy and clean all the time. To learn how to achieve this goal, just continue to read our article. It has the information you need to know about so you can effectively train your pet and keep your house nice and clean. Tips to Potty Train Your Poodle 1. Create a Potty Schedule— Make sure to have this schedule reach at least four times and keep strictly to the schedule so your dog will learn what it is supposed to do. These 4 sessions should last between 15 and 20 minutes. Since a dog can hold their bladder one hour for each month of life approx. You should expect some accidents to happen from time to time. Try a Litter Box— This method is not that hard, and you can put the litter box in a small room so that your pup does not have a lot of options available other than that box. Make sure to praise and reward your pet when they successfully use the litter box. Use a Bell— Because the poodle species is very intelligent, you can teach them to ring a bell every time they need to go outside. That way you can hear the bell and respond quicker than if they just whined or sat by the door. Just be ready to hear that bell ring often as your poodle may use it to tell you they want to go outside and play or go for a walk. Use the Same Command- This is essential to potty train your pet. They will associate that command with the exact spot they are to go to the bathroom. Use the command when you take them to the same spot every training session. Make sure to reward him or her when they obey and do this task right. Go Potty is a Good Command to Use— Keep the command simple and one your pet can understand and learn quickly. Then when he or she responds correctly, praise and reward them with a nice treat and a few good boys or good girl words. Just be patient as potty training is not an overnight task or something that will be done in a day or two. Use Praise and Rewards— This is vital when you are training your pet to go outside or in a litter box. Rewarding them reinforces positive behavior and lets them know they did it right. The key here is not to give him or her lots of rewards at one time. You want them to remain slim and healthy. Walk Your Dog— This is to be done after they have had their meal or have taken a drink. They will get used to this activity and learn where they are to go to the bathroom and when. You may have to wait about 20 or 30 minutes afterwards as it does take your toy poodle some time to process their food and water. Use a Crate— This is a trick used by many dog owners and it seems to be very effective in training your dog to go potty where they are supposed to. Dogs, especially poodles, do not like going to the bathroom near their beds so this is a handy tool too. Make sure to take them to their designated bathroom area for them to relieve themselves. Stay Consistent— You do not want to do random training, use random commands, or random bathroom areas. You need to remain consistent, use the same commands, the same spot, and the same time frames to effectively train your pet. If a mistake is made in the house, show him or her where they are supposed to go. Be gentle but firm in your punishment. You need to kill those odors so that your puppy does not return to the same spot and use it again. Use odor-killing products to eliminate those smells and teach your pet to go in the right spot. Some Final Words Like anything else worth doing, you will need to take your time, be patient and reinforce your training. Do not overly punish when mistakes happen but teach them that those areas are not to be used. Then remind them where they are supposed to go. Be consistent and use the same technique every training session until your pet learns what they are to do. Once they learn, your efforts will be rewarded. Potty training is a long process that requires patience and commitment. The key to successfully housebreaking your new puppy is positive reinforcement and consistency. With a little help from your friends here at Hepper, your poodle can be fully potty trained in just a few months. Keep reading to find our tips on how to make the potty training process as easy as possible for both you and your pooch. Before 12 weeks, puppies are still developing the muscles they need to hold their urine and feces. After your poodle reaches 3 months of age, you can increase the intervals to the same number of hours as their age in months. Your goal for potty training should be to go above and beyond by instilling in them the importance of eliminating in a designated area. Choose somewhere in your yard where your pup can feel safe and somewhere that will be accessible in all seasons. The corner of your lot by the fence might be okay in the summer, but will your poodle want to wade through the snow to get there in the winter? Take them to the same spot every time you take them outside to go potty. Put your dog on a leash whenever you take them outside to the bathroom. Reward, Never Punish Praise and rewards go a long way with any animal. While praise and words of encouragement are rewards themselves, treats are one of the best training tools you should have in your potty training arsenal. When your poodle eliminates in the appropriate place, offer praise and a reward immediately. You can also begin implementing clicker training at this point by marking the positive action urination or defecation with a click and then a treat. Punishment is never an acceptable training method. Outdated techniques recommend hitting your dog with a newspaper, raising your voice at them and telling them how bad they are, or rubbing their face in their own urine or defecation. Dogs do not associate these harmful behaviors with doing something wrong. All punishment does is teach your puppy to be afraid of you. You may not be able to smell the remains with your human nose, but you can best bet your pup can. These can be purchased from any pet store and will be your best friend as you wade through the challenges that potty training a puppy can present. You can even try creating your own at home with ingredients you probably already have on hand, like white vinegar and baking soda. Approach Potty Pads Carefully Potty pads can be a useful potty training tool in some situations. Allowing your puppy to use a potty pad inside your home can cause confusion about where it is appropriate to eliminate, dragging out the potty training process. If you must use potty pads, designate one area of your home where your puppy can relieve itself and put the pads there. You might put down several pads at first but then begin to reduce the number you lie down as your puppy gets used to this area being their spot to eliminate. Make sure you take them to the potty pads often to help them connect the dots that they are to be used for peeing and pooping. Constant Supervision Constant supervision is one of the essential parts of successful potty training. Some dogs will be able to hold it longer than others, and some will need to go to the bathroom whenever they play or get too excited. The most common signs your dog needs to pee or poop include: Sniffing around. Poodle Puppy House Training Overview While housebreaking a puppy may feel like a huge obstacle that is time-consuming at best and an undertaking that may fail at worst, there are definitely things that you can do to set your Poodle puppy up for success for potty training. There are 2 main elements: Having a clear plan in mind that will encourage a pup to learn quickly Having reasonable expectations based on the age of your Poodle In this section, we will go over all of the important steps for effective and fast training. Age to House Train This is most certainly not something that you will want to put off. Whether you have a brand-new Poodle puppy or an older, adopted dog that needs to learn, it is best to begin right away. Every day that this is not taught, is another day that the dog has wrong information about what to do and this just in and of itself will make housebreaking harder. Keep in mind that new puppies should not be brought outside to public areas or even your yard if there is a chance that other dogs have been there until the full rounds of puppy vaccinations are complete. Each vet schedule is slightly different; however, in general this is done by about the 4 month mark. If you are not sure, check with your vet. Having a Housebreaking Plan It's not uncommon for a puppy to pee or have a bowel movement with very little warning. And without a plan in place, this is when you'll see owners scrambling and picking up the pup while he dribbles urine as he's being carried out the door. While you will not catch every accident, you really will have much better success when you and all members of the family have a clear potty training plan in place. We would suggest reviewing what is needed, obtaining all of the necessities to be properly prepped, and then beginning. What is Needed Before You Begin There are a few things that you will need in order for housebreaking to be successful: 1 A supervision method. This is vital. Puppies or dog that have free rein in the house will be exceptionally hard to train. When you are home and are able to have your Poodle right by your side, use the tethering method. This means that your Poodle will be wearing a harness not a collar, since this can cause neck injury and will be on leash. The leash should be short and it should have a soft-looped handle, so that you can weave this through your belt loop or slip it over your wrist. When you are not home, or if you are home but cannot keep your Poodle near you, you'll need to keep your puppy or dog in a defined, secure area. Crates are not recommended; these are terribly confining and can cause a dog to feel both physically and emotionally stressed. Furthermore, they do not help with housebreaking; a dog will pee and poo when they need to. Gating off an entire room is also not recommended. This is too large of an area to do really do anything, and therefore there will still be pee and poo everywhere. One of the best methods is to use an indoor canine playpen. These are sturdy, open-top pens that allow a Poodle to move around, play, have all his favorite belongings food, water, toys, bed , but also keep messes contained. As a side note, these are great for separation anxiety, as they offer a secure 'den' that keeps all of a Poodle's aids right by them. And, these are perfect for the teething phase to keep a Poodle puppy from chewing apart the house. Recommended playpens to help with house training are below. These can be found with or without doors, and range from 24" ideal for toy and miniature Poodles to 48" better for standards, especially if continued to be used as the puppy grows. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. And on mobile, you may need to turn your screen horizontal to see all 4. Giving a Poodle incentive to do something applies to potty training, perhaps, more than it does with any other single action. Once something is a learned behavior, it become automatic though it is still nice to reinforce good behavior now and again. For housebreaking to happen quickly, you need to 1 give super-happy praise and simultaneously 2 offer the right type of reward. The training treat should be: New - It should not be something that you give to your Poodle for regular snacks. If you've found a great, all-natural and healthy snack that you'd like to keep giving, see if it comes in a different flavor. Small - House training treats need to be small. A puppy needs immediate satisfaction, and you cannot achieve this with something that a dog needs to sit down to chew on. Extra flavorful - It should be appealing to a Poodle sense of smell and sense of taste, offering a burst of flavor that will encourage the desire for more. And 'more' can only happen when the Poodle goes to the bathroom in the right area. Below are our top recommended training treats. And on mobile, you may need to turn the screen horizontal to see all 4. Dogs that are simply brought 'outside' for bathroom needs rarely have a good, clear understanding of what is expected. If they are out there long enough, they may very well go to the bathroom. However, your goal should be going above this and instilling the full concept of having one area for urination and elimination needs. Choose the area wisely; what may seem like a great spot in the summer may not work well in the winter. The bathroom area should be close to the home, not a spot that is used for anything else play area, gardening, etc. Within the chosen area, allow your Poodle to choose the exact spot that he prefers. Dogs that have a choice learn much faster and are more eager to follow the rules. It is best to stand in the middle of the area with your puppy on a 6 to 8 foot leash. Allow him to circle around and, sniff. Some will then need time for the bladder to relax or for the bowel muscles to push out stool. Since young puppies have weak bladder and bowel muscles, they can often pee or poo with very little warning. Whatever you need in order to bring your Poodle outside should be ready at the exit door. This will include a pair of shoes, an appropriate coat or jacket depending on the weather, clothing for your Poodle - should there be a need, an umbrella in case it is raining, a leash and even a book or magazine to thumb though while you wait. For the times that you are home, you will want to bring your Poodle to the designated area at the following times: First thing in the morning Any time right after the puppy wakes up from a nap Every 2 hours for a 2 month old, every 3 hours for a 3 month old, every 4 hours for a 4 month old, etc. It would certainly make things easier if dogs understood what we were saying when we spoke full sentences after they did something that we didn't approve of. However, puppies that are rewarded for good deeds and quietly forgiven for accidents are able to pick up what the owner wishes for without any scolding. Please remember that you want your Poodle to respect you, not fear you. And while it may feel good to release a bit of steam if you find a puddle of pee, yelling or acting frustrated will only confused and stress a puppy that really has no idea why you are upset. Dogs learn best when they can associate a word with an action. So, you'll want everyone in the house to be in agreement as to which word s will be used for housebreaking. It's best to keep it short, and have it be something that you do not feel uncomfortable saying in public. You will use this as you head outside 'Do you need to go potty? While some puppies will instantly pee or poo, others need time. Owners that only give the pup only a few minutes may have trouble with the training. Since 5 minutes can feel like 20 if you are bored, cold or otherwise uncomfortable or antsy, plan ahead. Have an outdoor chair located right in the middle of the bathroom area and plan ahead to check your mail or email during these times. It is recommended to give the puppy a good 15 minutes and if you just know that a bowel movement is due, give it .While on this note, one of the biggest problems that owners encounter is when a puppy won't pee in his spot no matter how long there, but will pee as soon as being brought back inside. A good tip to fix this, should it happen often, is hold him after you come back inside he won't pee on you ; then head back out in about 10 minutes. While young Poodles need to be taken out often see above , if they are kept on that schedule as they mature, they will not have an opportunity to learn to hold their needs and bladder and bowel muscles will not strengthen as they otherwise would. As you puppy grows older, stretch out the periods of time in between taking him out. While the carpet may look clean after you scrub it with dish soap and a sturdy brush, soap does not eliminate enzymes that are in urine. And those lingering enzymes you won't smell these, but your Poodle will essentially scream 'This is the bathroom area! So, all areas that have been pee'd or poo'd on need to be cleaned with an enzyme cleanser. Puppies are terrific at making whining noises and barking in the middle of the night, without letting us know if they need to go to the bathroom or are just bored and wanting some attention. If a puppy pees and poos before bedtime, it is far more likely that he wants your company as opposed to having a real need. However, it is always best to be safe than sorry. The important element is that this be done in a very serious manner without any play or other interaction. Keep lights low, bring your Poodle puppy directly to his spot, wait the allotted time without speaking other than praise if the deed is done and then bring him right back. A puppy will soon learn that barking for attention at night does not bring about any interaction that would seem worthy of making a fuss but that alerting you in regard to bathroom needs does result in praise and a quick treat. It's a common occurrence for owners to bring their Poodle for a walk in the neighborhood and just let the puppy go to the bathroom along the way. However, this is a missed opportunity for a house training lesson. Bring your Poodle to his spot first and then bring him for his exercise. Housebreaking Exact Steps This is exactly how to bring your Poodle out, what to say, and what to do: 1. Head outside with your Poodle on leash and harness, saying your chosen phrase Let's go potty , and with the training treats in a small zipped plastic bag, kept in your pocket. Lead your Poodle directly to the designated bathroom area, repeating the phrase. Stand in the middle of the designated area, allowing your Poodle to roam within the diameter and sniff around. Allow 10 to 15 minutes. If your Poodle pees or poos, without completely distracting your pup, mark the action with your chosen word said in a happy tone, You're going potty. During this time, be reaching for the training treat. As soon as your Poodle is done, bend to his level, give great praise in a super-enthusiastic voice Good potty, oh, you are such a good dog! If your Poodle had a bowel movement, and you believe that there may be a urination need, remain outside for an additional 5 minutes. A Final Word While you will need a bit of patience during this time, with a good plan and lots of enthusiasm from you, your Poodle puppy should be completely house trained with a few months. After you feel that he is fully trained, be sure to still bring him out often enough, and continue to offer praise to reinforce the lessons that have been learned. How to Stop a Poodle From Marking - Both males and females may display territorial marking, and this is a separate issue than housebreaking. Learn why dogs do this, and exactly how to stop it. Purchase a Leash Before you begin training your Poodle friend, you should purchase a leash and harness that will fit your pet. Using a leash during your puppy training accomplishes two things at once. If all goes according to plan within about 3 weeks of taking your Poodle to their designated potty spots, you should no longer have a problem. Praise, of course, is easy. Treats can be a bit trickier because you first have to figure out what your pet likes best. In most cases, however, your Poodle will be happy with a dog treat or even a dog toy to be given for good behavior. Never yell at, hit, or otherwise demean your Poodle for having accidents in the house or even for not following commands. Remember, your dog is just a baby, and yelling at it is counterproductive and cruel. Image Credit: Linas T, Shutterstock 4. Test Away from Home Once you begin to have accident-free days and at least a few accident-free nights, take your puppy to a friend to see how well it does. Make sure you take poop bags, wipes, and paper towels with you to clean up after your puppy if it has an accident. When you take the dog outside, wait with it to see if it uses the bathroom. Remember to offer tons of praise and treats for a job well done. However, in the excitement of getting the dog settled into its new home, it could be easy to forget to set a routine and start training your new friend to potty outside. Following the steps above will ensure that your Poodle puppy is properly trained and will continue to use the bathroom outside after your strict routine are adjusted to something less rigid. We will give you several options to try as every dog and situation is different. We all want our puppies to just be potty trained already, right?! And oh how lucky we are when some seem to just come that way! My first dog kya she was so dang easy. It really gave me a false idea of what is was like to potty train a dog. She literally came that way. BUT every dog since nope! Like people they are different and learn in different ways. Below are several methods you can use to potty train a dog. Try to feed him his meals at the same time each day and take him outside after every meal. If you feed your puppy at the same time each day you will be able to predict when he will need to go out, however some puppies like my teacup poodle can pee A-LOT so keep that in mind. Yes I am serious, one it keeps them close to you always which they love and two they are less likely to pee right next to you, but if they do you can say in a loud voice and clap NO while they do it pick them right up and put them on the grass to finish or at least to know this is where we potty. If they do finish on the grass praise them, praise them, praise them! Sniffing the ground and walking in circles are common signs that a dog has to go. Dogs do not like to potty where they sleep. When you can take them out again take them from the kennel to the grass. I learned once dogs have memory or use their memory through the bottom of their paws. If they have been trained to pee on the grass then when their feet hit the grass they know its time to pee. I will get into how this worked for us once with one of my dogs farther down. You may also reward your puppy with a small piece of food or with a physical reward such as a belly rub. Rewarding your puppy for good behavior is the best way to encourage them to repeat that behavior in the future. In fact our teacup is so small we stuff the back of the kennel with a towel so he only has enough room to lay and sleep. No kennel is small enough for him and we even have a kitten kennel. Take your puppy outside right before and immediately after confining them to the kennel. Lead your puppy to the grass and give him a chance to do his business then reward him when he does so. This has been proven to make potty training more difficult. Spanking or punishing your dog for going inside. If your dog does not know they are supposed to go outside and you punish them, you are only damaging the relationship you have with your dog. Yelling at your dog for going inside. This will lead the dog to avoid letting you know it needs to go or refusing to go when you are there, which makes providing a reward impossible. Then immediately take the dog outside or to the designated place. Failing to assign a consistent command word for the act of elimination. You do will hear only the first sound and then over time associate that first sound with going to the bathroom. Never use that word mad or mean keep it a positive word. On a leash take the puppy outside to the desired pee area for example your lawn we have a doggie door, so we take them to them door help them through until they figure it out then meet them outside and we grab the leash and walk them over to the spot on the lawn. Side NOTE…. So now take the puppy back inside BUT now the puppy needs to be held by you or back on a leash tied to you and goes every where you go. As stated above the kennel must only be big enough to sleep in. For a teacup I would say 15 minutes. Continue with this process until it goes to the bathroom. Then when all done crouch down to their level and hand them a treat while saying the Special Word. This helps teach them look when I pee outside I can be rewarded and this is a good thing. After about a week you can now try taking the dog off the leash and walking with it outside to its potty spot. If the puppy goes on the grass in the spot you have trained it to go, say your word while it goes potty. This tells the dog they did a very good thing and should definitely do it again. This will help the dog want to hold it so that they can go outside and get 5 treats. Make sure someone is always watching the dog so you know when it has gone and so you can reward it. This will go on for about two weeks. A teacup and their tiny bladder will be multiple times while playing and even after eating until they learn control. Using potty pads also called puppy pads, or pee pads is one way to help teach your puppy where it is appropriate to use the bathroom. Consistency is key to this training technique, which you can then use to also teach your puppy to eventually potty outside. The idea behind using a potty pad is to provide a visible, consistent area for your puppy to go potty. Large breed dogs may need heavy duty options compared to toy breeds. Newspaper and paper towels can be messy and difficult to clean up after your puppy potties on them, but they are inexpensive. Cloth towels are absorbent but will need to be washed regularly, and your puppy is more likely to try to chew on it like a blanket or toy. Store bought pee pads are the most popular option due to their absorbency, size options, and ease-of-disposal. Introduce the puppy to the pad allow your puppy to see and sniff the potty pads you chose. Puppies usually potty after sleeping, eating, drinking, and after playing. If your puppy starts sniffing around on the ground instead of playing or chewing on a toy, this is a good indication that it needs to go potty. Your puppy may have to go potty every two to three hours. Get in the habit of taking your puppy to the potty pad every 15 minutes to 1 hour depending on your puppy breed. After about a week you can now try taking the dog off the leash and walking with it to the peeped. If the puppy goes on the pad i, say your word while it goes potty. This tells the dog they did a very good thing and should definitely do it again. .This will help the dog want to hold it so that they can go on the pad and get 5 treats. I bought this cage , you can find it on Walmart. It is quite a bit bigger but I folded it tiny. He hops right in the peepad side when he needs to go than climbs around, eats, or sleeps on the other side. It has worked great. How to pee pad train your puppy how to pee pad train my puppy Option 4 Outside If you have a yard with grass this option will work and can be just what you need. If you do not have a fenced back yard this option will not be for you. Well one day I was told a puppy trains its self where to pee by the feeling of their paw touching that surface. We were then told to undo that she was 2 by this point we had to leave her out side all day and kennel her at night. This would retrain her paws to send that signal to the brain oh grass is where I pee. Now do not just put them out and forget them! We also brought her in when we could be right with her and snuggled on her and played with her but most of the time she staid out side all day. At night put them in the kennel as describe above many times. Then in the morning right back outside. We did this for two weeks and guess what it totally fixed the problem. We had another dog that as a puppy we went with the same method and same thing it totally worked. Our other dogs we did one of the three options above.

The Labrador Retriever is the most popular purebred dog in America for the 21st straight year. More than twice as many Labs were registered than any other breed making it a likely leader for many years to come. In a recent article, a licensed professional counselor for more than twenty-five years, explained how owning a Lab can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children. Here is an excerpt from her article: The ten reasons that I am giving for children to have a dog are not listed in order of importance. All of us have different characteristics which we find more important than others. Every reason I list, however, is important to the childhood of your son or daughter. Furthermore, telling a dog to sit, and then watching the dog do what he was told, provides children with tons of confidence. By giving children the confidence needed to consistently practice reading, they become better readers by virtue of the practice. Dog-owning children have fewer sick days off school, and children who own them often have better self esteem. Be sure to read the rest of her seven part article, Ten Reasons to Own a Dog. It is a pliable yet durable toy that teething puppies will find soft on their gums. The ridges can hold peanut butter or other such treats as an added bonus for your pup. And our strong chewing puppies have all loved them. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own. The unique molded shape and durable material made it a must for every dog owner. German Shepherd puppies are very active and will need a lot of exercise time to burn out all of their energy. Because of this, most of their exercise routine should engage their natural chasing and herding instincts. You should also include things to channel their wolf-like instincts of tugging and chewing. Aside from being fun, chewing is beneficial for multiple reasons that help him grow into a happy, healthy adult dog. Mental Health Chewing is a healthy coping mechanism that allows German Shepherd puppies to self-soothe. This is especially helpful for puppies with separation anxiety or noise sensitivity. Dental Health Chewing is extremely important for puppies in particular. Biting down allows teething puppies to stimulate blood flow in their gums and ease the pain. A good selection of chew toys prevents this sort of destructive behavior by redirecting their chewing instinct. Helping Their Ears Stand Up Another important German Shepherd-specific benefit of chew toys is that chewing builds the muscle at the base of the ear, allowing the rest of the ear to stand. To truly know how to give your German Shepherd puppy the best of the best, you need to know what makes the best chew toys. Durability The most important thing you need to look for in a chew toy is durability. Since German Shepherd puppies are power chewers, look for a strong, long-lasting chew toy. Material Chew toys are made to be bitten and chomped on, so look for toys that are made of strong, non-toxic materials that are safe and strong. Hard Plastic Material Chew toys that are made from hard plastic are more than just choking hazards. They could also cause broken teeth, bleeding gums, and internal damage if eaten. Stuffed Squeaky Toys The chewing and tugging instincts of a German Shepherd make squeaky toys a bad idea. The stuffing and squeaker can cause a wide range of hazards and are better avoided. These are our top 15 picks for the best chew toys for German Shepherd puppies. This flavored dog bone is equally delicious and durable for intense chewers like German Shepherd puppies. Like N-Bone, Nylabone also has no artificial preservatives, no artificial colors, and does not include added sugar or salt. Because of their affordability, long lasting formula, and the added benefits of the Omega-3 Nylabone is one of the best bones for German Shepherd puppies. These are less of a bone like treat and more of a bone shaped treat, but they contain some of the same benefits as the other bones listed on this list. This product gives your dogs the same gum and mental stimulation as a normal bone with its rubbery texture. Put treats in the middle of this bone to keep your puppy interested in the bone. If you really want to spoil your pup you can put peanut butter in the middle of the bone and stick it in the freezer until frozen. The harden texture will make chewing it more fun and satisfying for your dog and watching them lick all the peanut butter off is guaranteed to give you a good laugh and some priceless photos. Conclusion Feeding your puppy bones can be dangerous, but with proper supervision and if given the right size it can be fine. From being reusable, thin, natural, and having extra supplements like Omega-3, these products are sure to wow your German Shepherd while keeping them healthy and strong at the same time. If you decide to use some other bones for your puppy make sure you ask yourself the following questions: Can this break into sharp pieces that can cut my puppy? Is this too hard? Is this item too big? Can my puppy choke on it? With these 3 questions in mind you can rest assured that you now know how to pick the best bones for German Shepherd puppies.

Since this breed is known for being short-tempered with kids, this may make them too scary for kids, a possibility no family wants. This may also make training harder, unlike standard GSDs that can easily be trained. For example, most miniature GSDs carry the intelligence and loyalty of German shepherds. This leads to plenty of differences between the personality of a miniature German shepherd and the standard GSD. Another good news is that those that belong to the purebred or the dwarfism category typically acts like how a standard German shepherd should. But a mixed breed like the white miniature German shepherd is not only a dog that looks like a German shepherd but smaller. They also have a different purpose, depending on the other breed. They are great for those who own their own farm. Despite a less aggressive behavior, they still qualify as guard dogs. German shepherds have great potential as a search and rescue dogs. Even more so with the mini German shepherd since their size allows them to easily navigate through most terrains. See also 17 Things To Know About German Shepherd Pomeranian Mix Take note, however, that miniature German shepherds, like any other dog, need to have a balanced work and play for a comfortable life. While the German shepherd traits work well with the working line, the traits from the miniature breed may work the opposite way for family dogs. Due to their small size, they can easily be carried from place to place. This makes them great for kids. However, as previously said, when mixed with incompatible breeds, they can exhibit undesirable behaviors. Some examples of such breeds are chow chows and chihuahua , which are the worst dog breeds for small children due to their snappiness. On the other hand, being bred with a collie, poodles, and other friendly breeds may make small German shepherd breeds better family dogs. This means the dog might inherit different traits that you might not know of. Information such as the DNA line and health data are crucial things that you should know so you can take care of the miniature GSD properly. Breeders that cannot answer questions about the parents or provide any documents to back their statements are likely to be the type that only goes after the money. There are also dogs that look like a German shepherd but smaller with a parent from another breed. Some can have different personalities, appearance, health issues, and so on. It can be heavily weighted towards the characteristics of one parent more than the other. The Miniature German Shepherd puppy tends to have more of the classic appearance of the standard German Shepherd parent, but it is a smaller breed of dog. The characteristics of Miniature GSDs are a combination of nature and nurture: genetics of the parents, the environment and the quality, type and amount of training and socialization. They will be strong, resilient and love a challenge with both mental and physical stimulation involved, otherwise, they may misbehave. Any type of hybrid dog with two intelligent parents will be strong-willed and want to be kept active and useful. They will not want a sedentary lifestyle and will enjoy as much exercise and action as the owner can provide. Purpose: This breed will be loyal and true to their owner and protect them to the end. If the other parent is a collie then both were bred as fearless working dogs for herding and protection. This means they will want to work for their master and keep busy. Even is the other parent is a poodle or a smaller dog, they will still be clever and want to serve and obey their owner well. Behaviour: This breed can be strong-willed and needs to be trained early as it can easily and will become destructive, or bark if under-stimulated. A Miniature German Shepherd is a cross between a German Shepherd and a smaller dog breed that is meant to result in a smaller version of a German Shepherd. Although these Mini Shepherds can inherit any combination of traits from their parent breeds, they tend to be energetic, intelligent dogs that bond closely with their families and are affectionate with them. Miniature German Shepherds make great family dogs. They may be hardworking while on a job, but they have a playful spirit while relaxing with their family. They also tend to get along well with children and other dogs in the family. Although they tend to do well with smaller pets they have been raised with, they do have a high prey drive. Mini German Shepherds are also protective and alert. They will bark to alert you and will be naturally suspicious of strangers. Proper socialization and training early on can help make sure barking does not become a nuisance and will help them open up to strangers once introduced. Miniature German Shepherds are highly adaptable dogs. They tend to be a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. But, they can adapt just as well to apartments as long as they get the exercise, mental stimulation, and attention they need. They do well in most climates, but are sensitive to heat. Because they bond so closely with their families and want to be near them, they do not do well with long periods of alone time. Mixed-breed dogs can sometimes be healthier than purebred dogs because of genetic diversity. However, this is not a guarantee. They could inherit no conditions common to the parent breeds, but they could also inherit some or all of them. So, make sure you are asking them about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. For the Miniature German Shepherd, potential health conditions to be aware of include progressive retinal atrophy, hypothyroidism, epilepsy, and hip dysplasia. Because of their body shape, they are also at risk for bloat. Although Miniature German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please, they can be difficult for first-time dog owners to handle on their own. Their high energy, working dog instincts, thirst for learning, and need for structured training can be overwhelming for first-time dog owners. Because of this, puppy training classes are recommended if you are not an experienced dog owner. They help reinforce training, strengthen the bond you have with your dog, and also offer opportunities to socialize a puppy. In general, a Miniature German Shepherd will have a coat that sheds moderately year-round and heavier seasonally. Brushing a few times a week, daily brushing during seasonal shedding, and the occasional bath is usually sufficient for this coat type. If a Miniature German Shepherd has a Mini Poodle parent, there is a chance they could inherit the low-shedding Poodle coat. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. Although good dental care for dogs is essential, it is often overlooked. This is one of the reasons why gum disease is one of the most common health issues in older dogs. You can help protect your pup from painful dental diseases later in life by brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day and keeping up with regular vet visits. Although a Miniature German Shepherd may be smaller than a German Shepherd, they are still a high-energy dog with working dog instincts. In addition to having a job to do, these dogs also need daily walks plus playtime and time to run to be happy and healthy. If they like it, swimming can be a good low-impact activity while they are still growing. Once puppies finish growing , you can try higher-impact activities like hiking, running, training for dog sports, and more to see what they like. A fully-grown Miniature German Shepherd usually stands inches tall and weighs about 50 pounds. There can be some variation depending on the other parent breed in the cross, but meeting the mother dog in-person can give you a better idea of what size to expect in a Mini GSD. A Miniature German Shepherd generally lives for years. If the other parent crossed with a German Shepherd is a Standard Poodle, the result is a Shepadoodle. Featured Miniature German Shepherd Article. Standard German Shepherd Dogs In the late 19th century, various strains of German dogs were combined to create the ultimate herding dog. Today the breed is better known for their military, police, protection and service dog work. A well-socialized German Shepherd Dog makes a wonderfully loyal family pet. This is a well muscled dog with a deep chest and strong hindquarters, and he is longer than he is tall. Their double coat of medium length comes in a variety of colors. They have a long muzzle, confident head carriage, and pointed ears. Therefore that makes them more appealing to many people. The oversized round head and big eyes associated with little dogs engenders a feeling of caretaking behavior in people. This phenomenon is known as baby schema. Are Miniature German Shepherds Real? Miniaturization in dog breeding is achieved in one of three ways. A standard German Shepherd can be crossed with a smaller dog breed. They can possess the gene for dwarfism. The final way to miniaturize is to breed two exceptionally small purebred German Shepherds together. Miniature German Shepherd Mix Breeding a female German Shepherd with the male of a smaller breed produces a mixed breed dog. This is the most humane way to miniaturize. They could be smaller but not look or behave anything like a German Shepherd. The upside to crossbreeding is that it can reduce the incidence of passing along genetic health problems. Here are some breeds that breeders commonly mix with the German Shepherd. They measure just 10 to 12 inches and weigh from 25 to 30 pounds. Despite the size difference, these are both herding breeds who are smart and trainable. You can expect this mix to stand from 12 to 15 inches and weigh anywhere from 25 to 65 pounds. The Corman Shepherd will be an athletic dog who needs plenty of activity. This is a highly intelligent, loyal, and loving mix. In appearance, these two breeds are very dissimilar, so looks can vary depending on which parent the puppies take after. The standard Poodle is over 15 inches and weighs from 40 to 70 pounds. You can expect the Shepadoodle to range from 15 to 26 inches tall and weigh between 40 and 90 pounds. This is sure to be a whip smart and extremely energetic dog. He will need plenty of physical activity and mental stimulation. The Shollie will be highly trainable. But a tendency to be protective might not make them the best choice for homes with small children. The Border Collie stands from 18 to 22 inches and weighs from 30 to 55 pounds. Physical characteristics of this condition include short bowed legs, longer body and issues with coat development. This would truly be a miniature German Shepherd in terms of temperament and behavior. However, pituitary dwarfism can have some pretty serious health effects. To a breeder, it means puppies whose weight at birth is abnormally low. To clarify, defined this way, you could have an entire litter of runts. Unfortunately, puppies who are born extremely underweight are likely to face many health problems throughout their lives. And the more underweight they are, the more they are at risk. Some breeders choose this method because the other characteristics of the breed will get passed down to the puppies. However, when two dogs who are way below the standard size are bred together, it increases the chance of passing along health problems as well. The standard female German Shepherd is somewhat smaller, standing from 22 to 24 inches and weighing between 50 and 70 pounds. To be a mini German Shepherd you need to be less than 22 inches tall and fewer than 50 lbs. But Miniature German Shepherds can be considerably smaller than this, depending upon how they are bred. Miniature German Shepherd size will depend on a number of factors. So crossing with a Collie would make a larger dog than one mixed with a Yorkie. A miniature German Shepherd full grown with the gene for dwarfism would have very short legs and weigh approximately 30 pounds. Breeding two very underweight purebred GSDs could potentially make an even smaller dog, but at what cost? Temperament: Intelligent, agile, noble, proud, alert, energetic, athletic There is a certain amount of controversy surrounding the breed, as the name is somewhat of a misnomer. Many backyard breeders attempt to sell the breed as a truly miniature version of a standard German Shepherd, but the truth is that the dog is a mixed breed. This means that the Mini German Shepherd may share many similar traits with a German Shepherd but may inherit other traits from their parent breeds too. If you are looking for a carbon copy of the German Shepherd in a smaller package, these, unfortunately, do not exist. That being said, the Miniature German Shepherd is a wonderful hybrid breed nonetheless, and if this dog sounds like it may be the one for you, read on for an in-depth look at this unique breed. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Miniature German Shepherd Puppies A post shared by Ailbhe Donohue ailbhedonohue Miniature German Shepherds can vary fairly widely in appearance and size, depending on what breed the German Shepherd was bred with. While they do often resemble a smaller German Shepherd, remember that due to their mixed genetics, they will not have the same temperament and characteristics as a standard German Shepherd. They are typically hybrids of a German Shepherd and a Border Collie or Poodle, so the resulting crossbreed is usually just as smart as their parents. The same goes for energy and exercise needs; with those parents, these dogs are high energy! These dogs need more exercise than even a purebred German Shepherd, and as any Miniature German Shepherd owner will tell you, it takes a great deal to tire these pooches out. This makes them excellent guard dogs, and they will do anything to protect their owners, just like a standard German Shepherd. One plus of having this smaller version of the German Shepherd is that they are highly adaptable and can live in small homes and apartments happily, provided that they get sufficient exercise. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They have a strong instinct to protect their owners, so they make excellent guard dogs. Like their parent breeds, they thrive off of human companionship and adore being around their owners. This can be a problem if you are out frequently, as they are prone to suffering from separation anxiety. If you are away from home for large chunks of time, this is probably not the breed for you. German Shepherds have a strong prey drive, and Miniature German Shepherds are much the same. This means that early socialization is essential for this breed — the earlier, the better — to prevent them from going after the family cat! Around 2 or 3 cups of high-quality kibble are ideal and should be split into two meals a day to prevent bloating. Be sure to check that the first listed ingredient on the food is an animal-sourced protein and that the food is free from too many filler ingredients, such as wheat, corn, and soy. While these dogs are not prone to getting overweight, too many of these ingredients can cause weight gain and digestive issues too. This will add welcome variety and give them a boost of high-quality protein and amino acids. We recommend at least 1 hour or 2 a day, but the more, the better. This could be a run, jog, or bike ride or an intensive interactive game, like fetch or frisbee. These intelligent pooches will love agility exercises and games, and this will give them plenty of mental and physical stimulation. Remember that these dogs have lineages that were bred for a specific purpose, and the closer you can get to giving them directed exercises, the better. They are highly intelligent, so mental and physical stimulation is essential to prevent boredom and undesirable behavior. Just like other working breeds, these dogs respond well to positive reinforcement training methods. This method requires consistency and dedication, but the result is well worth it. Try to begin training your dog from the day that you bring them home, as this will help set the training and prevent them from picking up any bad habits, which are harder to fix. The key to training these dogs well is consistency and repetition, but try to make training a fun experience and avoid too many of the same exercises. German Shepherds can be stubborn and aloof at times, and the same trait may be passed down to your dog. Early socialization with people and other dogs is crucial for avoiding this and will make training them easier. Bathing them with human shampoos or too often can strip their coat of its natural oils and cause further shedding and even allergies down the line. However, there are no guarantees, and there are a few issues that may be passed down from their parent breeds, including hip and elbow dysplasia, hemophilia, and epilepsy. Gastric dilatation-volvulus is fairly common in dogs with deep chests, so be sure to feed your dog two to three small meals throughout the day and avoid feeding them after exercise. Degenerative myelopathy is fairly common in senior German Shepherds and may be seen in German Shepherd hybrids too. Minor Conditions. Besides being hard-working herding and guard dogs , miniatures also have a bit of a soft side. They are not as aloof as full-sized purebreds, but may appear standoffish when around people or dogs they do not know. They are very protective of their owners and will be loyal to them. Those mixed with Golden Retrievers or Poodles have calmer temperaments than those mixed with Border Collies. Poodle or Golden mixes are ideal for families with children. Border Collie mixes will be higher strung and do not thrive in households with kids. This mix does not bark much. Regardless of temperament, all mini German Shepherds need daily mental and physical stimulation. Mental stimulation can come in the form of puzzle toys, feeders, sniffing outside, or training sessions. Physical stimulation can be jogging, walking, running, herding, or agility exercises. This mix requires a bare minimum of 60 minutes of daily activity. There is no guarantee what miniatures will look and act like. Most puppies retain the characteristic appearance and personality of the German Shepherd, but there will be some variation depending on the cross. A mini German Shepherd lives longer than a German Shepherd, on average. Miniatures can live up to 15 years, while purebreds live between 12 to 14 years. This is due to the fact that smaller dogs age slower than larger dogs. Also, being a mixed breed dog helps most minis have a longer lifespan, this is known as hybrid vigor. There is still a chance miniature German Shepherds will inherit health conditions from their parents. They are prone to hemophilia, elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, gastric dilatation-volvulus, epilepsy, and pituitary dwarfism: Hemophilia is a genetic condition where a dog has impaired blood clotting. Elbow dysplasia occurs when the bones forming the elbow joint are improperly aligned or have uneven growth patterns. Hip dysplasia occurs when the hip joint socket does not nicely enclose the head of the femur, creating looseness. Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive breakdown of the spinal cord. This results in hind limb weakness and paralysis. Gastric dilatation-volvulus is a condition in which the stomach bloats and rotates on itself. It requires surgery to fix due and can be life-threatening. Puppies can be affected by dwarfism and growth hindrance. Dwarfism is an autosomal recessive disorder. Affected puppies will have legs that are abnormally short, bodies that are abnormally long, and hair coats that may have patches of baldness. There is some controversy surrounding miniature and teacup dog breeds. Some people mistakenly assume that a mini breed is simply a smaller version of its purebred parent. This is not true! The miniature German Shepherd is not a purebred dog breed; it is a hybrid mix. These smaller puppies can keep some recognizable traits of a German Shepherd, but they are not purebred. Some breeders try to sell their miniature puppies as purebred dogs. They do not exist unless you are considering dwarf, however these dogs come with many health problems. Most miniature German Shepherds are created via crossbreeding. There are two other ways that breeders may have litters of minis: Pituitary Dwarfism Breeding Runts Breeding two German Shepherds that are both carriers of the Pituitary Dwarfism gene is not ethical. Dwarves can be affected by many health conditions such as hypothyroidism, poor kidney function, and skeletal defects. Dwarves are not the same as miniatures. Some breeders selectively breed German Shepherd puppies that are runts. This can also produce smaller puppies after several generations. Similar to dwarfism, the practice of intentionally breeding runts can create puppies predisposed to health conditions. These puppies will have lower than normal birth weight and may fall behind on the growth curve. Make sure to avoid breeders that breed runts or dogs with pituitary dwarfism. Miniature vs. Standard Differences Miniature German Shepherds can be half the size of standards! This means they do not grow taller than 20 inches and weigh no more than 50 pounds. Due to their smaller size, minis have a slightly longer lifespan of 15 years. At first glance, mini German Shepherds look just like purebreds. They will likely keep the alert, athletic and muscular appearance of their purebred parent, but it will be on a smaller body. This means they are mainly tan and have a saddle-shaped black pattern on their backs. Other coat colors include: white, black, sable, black and silver, or black and red. They generally increase the price of miniature German Shepherds.
