Meet Our Dogs Our dogs are more than just pets — they are family! Our dogs grow up in a loving, family oriented environment and are socialized from a young age. All of our moms and dads have passed genetic testing specific to their breed. Nora is just a happy girl with a happy heart and she passes this on to her sweet puppies! She is so engaged and careful with her babies, an adorable dog and Mama through and through! She is a talker like her Mama, loves the family bunny, and adores her family. Millie loves to learn and is proud of her accomplishments. Millie makes her guardian family laugh and the favorite part of her day is when the whole family is together! Pure sweetness with just a dash of mischief ; that would be Pumpkin! Rosey is such a good mix of love and affection, adventure and playfulness, with just a dash of mischievousness! He has a wonderful fleece coat with big waves. Flynn is a sweet and energetic little guy, he has no trouble keeping up with the big dogs! He has produced stunning traditional tricolor litters with some of the prettiest coats we've seen! Rocky is as sweet as he is mischievous! He also fancies himself a lap dog - which is a small problem at pounds! He is a lover with the most soulful eyes! He is playful, curious, and full of energy! Sully is a "moyan" poodle which is a small standard poodle. He weighs 27 pounds and when bred with a Bernese he will produce mini - medium tricolor bernedoodles! Full of love and cheer, he keeps us on our toes! Max is one of the happiest guys we know! Arlo Male tricolor standard poodle Arlo is the epitome of a standard poodle, goofy, goofy, goofy, and intelligent! He is truly a delight, fun-loving, and energetic. Arlo is the master of the head tilt and its so cute to see his babies following suit with impressive head tilts of their very own! Every one of these girls truly made the world a better place and we are so grateful to each and every one of them! As a full time Breeder, you have to have a lot of dogs. We usually breed our dogs when they are around 18 months old, and we will breed a maximum of 3 times. If you think about that, as soon as a Mama has her first litter you need to have a new puppy in the line up so she is ready for her first breeding as your 3 year old girl is retiring. As a result we quickly had a house full of retired dogs - not a good business plan! We buy the dog, pay for all testing and medical care, but she lives with another family. All of our guardians live very close to us and we give them all the support they need. When the girl is ready to have a litter, she comes to our house to have her pups and stays with us until the puppies are weaned, usually about six weeks. Of course their guardian families come to visit too! After 3 breedings, the dog is spayed and she officially becomes the guardian families forever dog! You did such a good job, we are so lucky we found you! We kept Mala from our first litter from Snow White. Thank you for making such sweet babies! When they saw Georgia, a senior that needed a home, they knew Priscilla would want them to honor her by adopting another senior bulldog. Georgia has moved out rescue and into a great home where she will want for nothing. Georgia is a 8 yr. After originally being found as a stray at a local shelter, Georgia has spent time with a local mutli-breed rescue. She has been loved and well taken care of, but the rescue groups feels that a breed specific rescue like LSBCR is more suited to finding her a home. Georgia is going to make a quick trip to the clinic to address some eye issues and to get a check-up. She is a very sweet and curious about everything going on around jer. When I first brought Miss Georgia into my house, she seemed just fine with my young bulldog, Hope, and my two Cavaliers. First record of these great dogs goes back to the 17th century, predominantly used in areas such as guardians, stock dog, and catch dogs on small farms. Almost extinct around World War II, the breed has now made a notable comeback due to the passion and mission of John D. Johnson and Alan Scott. At a turning point in the revitalization of the breed, Johnson and Scott took different paths in their breeding program and what they felt was the true or original American Bulldog. That resulted in the two types of the American Bulldog. The Scott type which is also known as the Standard type, and the Johnson type which is the Classic type or more bully type. Both are wonderful specimens of the canine world and we have both types here at Big Rock Bulldogs. In our opinion it is the perfect combination, that results in an overall well rounded AB! You get the size, strength, athleticism, and impressive stature with a hybrid dog. The Johnson adds bulk, and muscle; the Scott type adds leg, longer snout for improved breathing ability which in turn allows for better heat and exercise tolerance. Our very first AB, Diesel, is a Scott type. He was the reason we fell in love with this breed! They are the less bully type with longer noses and a less bulky stature but still packed with plenty of muscle. Diesel is no longer used in our breeding program but remains our steadfast guardian and loyal companion! We continue to see his offspring in litters produced from his working days. His legacy will live on as long as we are producing these amazing dogs! This breed, no matter which type, has become a popular family dog that is known for its natural instinct for family protection, especially among women and children. They are also a favorite choice among hog hunters in the feral hog crisis used as catch dogs. They compete in sports such as Schutzhund, Iron dog competitions, dog obedience, and more. These dogs are loyal, confident, gentle and generally very friendly. They do however have a strong ingrained desire to guard their family. Therefore, socialization is particularly important with this breed! When well-raised and well-loved, this breed in our eyes is the best large breed dog on the planet! Like any relationship, you get out of it what you put in it. They require your time and training as any dog does to develop into a confident, loving, family companion. They are curious, playful, and unlike their other bulldog relatives, they have a strong affinity for water and swimming, and do quite well at it! Environmental conditions are something you always need to be aware of with your American Bulldog! Due to the short nose especially with the Johnson type , they are not able to move air as efficiently as their longer-nosed canine compadres. They do not have the ability to cool themselves well by panting, and overheating can be life threatening! When the weather is cool and pleasant, let them romp and run to their hearts content! The Scott type is less likely to have heat related complications, but we still advise you use caution all the same. The American Bulldogs jaws are impressively strong and can easily tear apart flimsy poorly constructed toys. We are fans of Nylabone, Jolly balls and Kong toys. Also, toys with a lot of stuffing other than ones made for heavy chewers will just become a mess of white fluff on your floor about 5 minutes after you give it to them. Not fun to pick up, I know from experience! Always stay away from anything raw hide! There are so many options out there that are safer and healthier, spend your money on those! Lastly, your American Bulldog puppy should have regular visits to your veterinarian throughout all life stages. If you are adopting a young puppy, there will be more vaccines needed to complete the series for protection from deadly viruses. Routine preventative care is a must! Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Your Golden puppy is going to be scared and lonely, so expect some heartbreaking whining. If your puppy whines at night, you can pick him up to take it outside if it has been a while since last relieving itself. Do not cave in and pick up your puppy right away. But you do not want to reinforce this behavior and inadvertently teach the puppy that whining results in immediate attention and play. If your puppy is still whining after, say, 15 or 20 minutes, then pick your puppy up to reassure it. It would help if you only did this for the first few days to a week. Puppies need about 5 minutes for every one month of age. So, an eight-week-old will need about 10 minutes once or twice per day. Take your puppy outside to relieve itself just before bed. Your Golden puppy will get the hang of it soon. Dogs are social animals and want to sleep close to their family. Many breeders will give you a blanket or old shirt that has been with the mother. The ticking of the clock will soothe the puppy. Additional Tips The first day and night will be the hardest. However, you should expect some challenges. Tip 1. Accidents will happen, lots of them. Your puppy is always learning, so make sure you spend lots of time with them so they know they can be happy and safe around you. Pets love routine, so get your puppy into a regular routine as soon as possible! Decide where they are sleeping. Whether you plan on your puppy forever sleeping in your bedroom, or want them in a separate room, you need to start this from the beginning and stick to it. If you have your puppy in your bedroom but plan to move them into a different room at a later date, this can be really distressing for them. Keep calm. Keep bedtime as calm as possible for your pup. Give them gentle praise such as a few strokes when they settle where you want them to. Sleep in the same room for the first few nights. For the first few nights, your puppy will need time to adjust to being without their mum. Remind them of mum. Pop this where they sleep every night as it will help to comfort them and keep them calm. Night time toilet breaks may be needed. Puppies have little bodies and little bladders! For the first few weeks you might find they need a toilet break during the night. If your puppy is worried during the night, they might cry or bark. This is completely normal as they adjust to a new home and environment. Our journey to Old Amish country was for business, not pleasure. When you think of Amish country industry, one conjures oak furniture, quilts and perhaps farm stands. Few may realize that the Amish also flourish when it comes to breeding puppies. Like many people seeking special companions in the Northeast and Midwest regions of the United States, we drove hours, invested hundreds of dollars and loads of emotional energy into this pilgrimage to a unique religious and cultural landscape. She was an Amish-born canine Doodle princess. Her given name: Alisha. Dreams of a Dog Deferred For years, my year-old asked to get a dog. We spent hundreds of hours discussing the idea, researching breeds and considering when and how to obtain a canine companion. We tried visiting local animal shelters and discovered a majority to be fearsome pit bulls, a breed our entire family dislikes. I tried using the popular site Petfinder to locate rescue dogs and found few available after several wild goose chases. That app would often shuttle me to animal shelters in other states, and dogs we pursued were already adopted. The Petfinder site also seemed slow to update and clunky to use. Doodles are often intelligent, good natured and hypoallergenic. German Shepherds and Pit Bulls be damned. Golden Retrievers and Labradors? Watch out. One weekend in January, I restarted the search for a puppy and came across the Lancaster Puppies website, downloading the iOS app. When I changed the filter to Pennsylvania, more than cockapoos surfaced. The description on the profile of Alisha explained her heritage — daughter of a cockapoo mother named Roxy and a toy poodle stud a seeming misnomer — and other details. Their voice mail said they would return calls on Monday. My daughter prayed that night that we could adopt Alisha and peppered me with questions nonstop. With a cheery voice, she said we were first in line to adopt Alisha and we were lucky to have called the day they listed the puppies — before many other people called about Alisha and her two siblings. Molly enjoyed her new luxurious furniture. We made plans to mail a check. It was too late. Another woman was in line to adopt Ashley. My daughters felt the woman was rude to Esther and expressed their disgust multiple times, also hoping she would drop out of contention for the second puppy — to no avail. Later, Esther gave me details for a new friend who could receive a Zelle payment. I asked this woman, Lauren, about the puppy industry in Amish country. My conversation with Lauren also confirmed that Esther and her family were legitimate. All we do is show the puppies and give them our information and then you can call. It was clear that some animal rights activists despise the Amish dog breeding industry. Sadly, dogs are considered livestock, a cash crop and just another source of lucrative income for the Amish. It said the communities often sell their dogs directly to the public through Lancaster Puppies, Greenfield Puppies or a mix of online classified sites such as Puppy Find. One video suggested some Amish breeders perform cesarean sections and other procedures on dogs rather than hiring a veterinarian to do so. Some sites made undercover videos that aim to expose inhumane treatment, showing dogs in cages without proper medical treatment. Snopes concluded that the statistic cannot be proven and that many commercial breeding kennels in Lancaster had closed. Other sites say some Amish puppy mills house dozens or hundreds of dogs in pole barns or outbuildings, where dogs live in overcrowded, stacked cages. They allege that the dogs are force-bred at every heat cycle. They say veterinarian care is minimal because it costs money. I filtered all puppies on the app from Quarryville and did a series of random checks to see how many puppies Esther and Isaac listed. I saw only two small batches of puppies, which made me feel good. I noticed some other sellers have many more batches for sale. I appreciated how personable and honest Esther was on the phone. We talked about the puppy mills problem at one point, and she welcomed me to ask questions and write about this topic. She also welcomed our family to pick up the puppy and meet their family. To me, these were all good signs. I also saw signs that parts of the Amish community were working toward better practices for puppy breeders. A story from The New York Times showed the Amish community was facing backlash and boycotts over its ambitious dog breeding goals and questionable methods three decades ago. As bad press exposed the practices, regulations took effect in some locations, and some norms also changed as more Amish families saw dogs as pets rather than just livestock. One story in Gannett newspapers in Indiana and Kentucky in reported how the Amish were aiming to restore their dog breeding reputation. Purdue researchers advised the breeders to let dogs run in the yard to exercise and socialize more and found the dogs looked and behaved better. The project aimed to develop certifications that would go beyond U. Department of Agriculture mandates on food, water, housing and climate. The Amish have always used horses to pull their buggies and help with farm work, meaning horse breeding has always been part of Amish culture. And the site said some Amish people are active in the exotic animal trade, breeding parrots, zebras, foxes and hedgehogs. Perhaps Netflix will consider a series on Amish exotic breeders once it exhausts its appetite for portraying tiger breeders such as Joe Exotic and Carole Baskin? Many people recognize Old Order Amish for their horse-drawn wagons and their 17th century appearance that includes mostly dark-colored clothing, beards for men, head coverings for women in public and a prohibition on zippers. Those are fine. He wondered aloud if Alisha would be troubled riding in an automobile powered by an internal combustion engine rather than horses. The Amish in America grew out of conservative Anabaptist communities that started in Switzerland in the s. They follow the teachings of Jakob Ammann, who spearheaded a split with the Mennonites over the issue of excommunication. The Mennonites take a softer approach to excommunication. As we arrived in Lancaster County, I felt refreshed. The clean air, rolling pastures and orderly, well-made buildings reminded me of bucolic countryside in Europe, such as in rural Germany or Switzerland, where the Amish originated. I also sensed a pleasant absence of marketing, technology and materialism. As we passed the schoolhouse, my year-old daughter chimed in. The Old Order Amish are known for being separate from the dominant society and cautious of technological innovations, according to Edsel Burdge, Jr. And they area growing in number. Another 6, live in Canada and about live elsewhere. The birth rate for Old Order Amish is more than triple the U. Many Amish families have 5, 10 or more children. They scampered in the yard, playing and bonding with the tiny puppy while I chatted with Esther and Isaac. Their own house dog, an older Yorkshire Terrier, pranced around the yard. They told me they first started owning and breeding Siberian Huskies, a favorite dog for Isaac, in the early s. That was pretty decent pay. The big boom for their business occurred as apps began making markets between breeders and buyers. Most people now are from out of state. I mentioned I saw they had recently had clients from Brooklyn, Ohio and many other places. From their perspective, Petfinder and other apps that connect stray dogs and rescued dogs to owners is a wonderful service. They also know America has more demand for pets beyond the stray and rescue market. And the demand is very helpful for Amish families, trying to sustain their family, their farm and their faithful way of life. Isaac and Esther said they are glad to see the awareness of puppy animal welfare growing in the area. A non-profit group called PAWS includes a large group of Amish men who work with animal welfare advocates to educate people about the law as well as how to have decent care for dogs. Isaac and Esther gave us a tour of their farm, including the workshop where Isaac and his children fashion beautiful, hardwood furniture with clean lines and, sometimes, a distressed farmhouse look. They showed us the barn where they keep their horse and buggy. Dogs at the Amish farm had access to the outdoors, heated and cooled kennels and lots of exercise and fresh air. And they showed us their dog kennel with half a dozen Siberian Huskies on one side and half a dozen small dogs like Cocker Spaniels and Shih Tzus on the other side. Each dog had its own fenced in area and the ability to run through a pet door to an outside area. The dogs seemed happy, healthy and energetic. They barked and ran excitedly when seeing my children. I was glad to see the dogs also ran on safe, flat floors rather than on raised chicken wire platforms like animal rights videos showed of puppy mills. Esther pointed out an air conditioning machine that keeps the kennel cool in the summertime. Our conversation was interrupted momentarily by my 5-year-old daughter running up and making an important announcement. They suggested people do basic things like get in contact with sellers, make sure people are doing more with puppies than just giving basic food and water. They say to make sure that worming and vaccinations are up to date and certified by a veterinarian. You would think we know how to do it. But we keep learning. As we walked around the farm, I enjoyed chatting with Isaac about growing up as the son of a Baptist pastor in South Dakota and the fact we are in different wings in the broader Christendom. And, in that moment, I realized the Amish were prescient and inoculated from the plague of big technology companies that has wrought an explosion of addictive algorithms and legions of substandard of content. I asked if that was true and if it is now changing. Now, they see more people caring about the puppies and realizing they are pets. They say the PAWS group has helped with that perspective shift. Many breeders had that same idea, judging by the number of mixed breeds out there. Get ready to learn about some adorable puppies! The German Shepherd is just as energetic and always ready for a game of fetch. This dog also brings a tendency to nip into the mix that will require some gentle discipline to tame. Both breeds are simple to groom, with regular brushing your main task. The Chinese Shar-Pei is also a bit smaller than the pound weight of the parent breed. Overall, the mix makes him an excellent choice for an individual or family with grown children. Both breeds are energetic with the extra stamina to handle a long day of play and fun. We are 5-month-old Standard Poodles weighing about lbs. While I love to play with my foster siblings, I really just want calm space to hang out with my humans and other fur friends. I wake and jump into bed to give my foster parents good morning snuggles! I enjoy a light morning snack and spend the rest of the day napping and hanging out with the humans while they work. After work, all bets are off, and I make sure to get all the puppy zoomies out. My leash training is going well, but I often try to chase the leaves and get distracted by unfamiliar sights and smells. I love to go outside to play, chew on a stick or take a walk. I also enjoy down time with humans to cuddle and get lots of belly rubs. I start my day at am, go potty, then breakfast. After I like going outside to chase squirrels and play. I then have dinner around pm and in my crate by 10pm for bed. I love learning tricks and am very food motivated! I also like to try and outsmart my foster parents when they hide my treats or sticks, I bring inside. I am very curious and love to explore, play, eat, and cuddle. Now that I am older, I can make it through the night without any potty accidents but I need to go outside as soon as I am up, usually around 7am. I eat breakfast then it's right back outside for my next potty break! I like to have a chew bone and play for a while, then naps. I like to sit on the couch next to my foster mom, or lay on my back sprawled out on the floor. I love going for walks and am learning to not pull.
