Introducing the Crate The way the crate is introduced will play a big role in how secure Spencer is being in it. The more secure he is the more he will like it. Spencer is already not sure about being inside the house. To help him along I get a bully stick and let him chew on it. After he gets a taste of it he decides he likes it. I then use the stick to lure him to the front of his crate….Spencer walks into the crate on his own. Had I just put him in there myself, his first experience would not have been as pleasant. Allowing him to explore it on his own gives him the confidence he needs to really feel safe inside of the crate. As soon as he relaxes I close the door. Bruno's presence helps Spencer relax. A few hours later, after having Spencer outside playing and exploring, he comes inside the house and walks right into his crate. He decides the crate is his safety place. After all, there is a bully stick in there just waiting for him. Spencer is not so sure about coming out of his crate and walking on the kitchen floor. I used his bully stick to lure him into the crate. When he lay down to chew it I closed the door. As soon as I walked away Spence started fussing, and boy is he loud when he fusses. I knew he did not have to go to the bathroom because he just went. I didn't want him to think fussing resulted in affection or the crate door opening, so I went to the living room where Bruno was sleeping and told Bruno to come with me in the kitchen. I had Bruno sleep in the dog crate next to Spence's kennel. Spence saw Bruno and calmed down considerably but started to fuss one more time and I sternly "shhhhed" him. Spence stopped fussing and was content with being in his crate next to Bruno, although I know he would have preferred to be in the same dog bed. Had I not had Bruno I would have had to ignore him and wait it out. I realized I had not heard a peep from Spencer. I decided to go and let him out anyway. He followed me all the way from the kitchen to the living room front door and to the grass to pee and back inside to the kitchen. He plopped down with Bruno in the dog bed. I had to guide him inside his crate with the bully stick that was next to Bruno. I gave him his bully stick and went back to bed. I heard him squeak and I got up to let him out. I notice when I open the front door he does not step outside unless I step outside first. I have seen Amie tell him to wait until she passed through the door first a few times. Since Bruno does this automatically Spencer seems to have picked up on this concept already. We had a little accident the evening of the third day. Spencer went to the front door and we didn't notice in time, so he peed right in front of the door. I cleaned it up very well with pet deodorizer spray to get the smell out so it does not attract him to do it again. Housebreaking: Fourth Night Spencer's crate was dry once again. I got up in the middle of the night and took him out to potty once. Crate training is going well. Feeding Spencer is a good eater. We feed him three times a day, as much as he can eat in ten minutes. He is always finished before the ten minutes are up. Spencer and Bruno are eating different types of food and Spencer eats more often than Bruno, however when Spencer eats Bruno ignores him. Good boy, Bruno. Respecting the puppy. Bruno Helping Spence It is amazing to watch just how much Bruno helps Spence adjust to all of this new excitement. For example, one of the first times Spencer was in the car he started to shake. He was not sure about being in there. He looked up at Bruno and suddenly his tail started wagging and all was better again. On the first day home when I would take Spence out to go to the bathroom he seemed unsure about following me down into the yard. However when I took Bruno with me he followed Bruno with confidence, very happily I might add. Teaching to Follow Spencer's instinct to follow is strong, stronger than Bruno's was at this age. Bruno had the instinct, but Spence's is stronger. He follows me everywhere and he does not try to pass me. I walk, he comes, I stop, he stops. When I stop walking he sits down right next to my feet and waits. I look down at him and he looks up into my eyes waiting for the next move. I walked him and Bruno to the pond and back off-leash and Spencer followed. That super strong instinct to follow and the attachment to humans is a Pit Bull trait. We are showing him strong leadership and in return he is paying close attention to us to see what we want of him. Pit Bulls will do anything for their owners if they can understand what it is the owners want of them. Owners need to channel that desire to please into something positive. He had never been in this crate before. I had just cleaned the crate out and the pup got a hold of the paper towels that had cleaner on them. Simply yanking them out of his mouth would have not only not taught him a thing, but he would most likely have thought it was just a game. I had to act and think fast however because of the cleaner to get him to drop it himself. After taking care of the paper towel issue I use this bully stick to lure him into the new crate. Notice how he is focused on the smell of the cleaner and I use this bully stick to redirect his attention to that smell. Then I use the bully stick to associate the crate with something positive. Simply shoving him into the crate may have caused him apprehension about being in the crate. The Test It was midnight and time for Spence to go to his crate. I took him out for a short walk and a potty break and headed back inside the house. Just like the last two nights I led Spencer to his dog crate in the kitchen. When we got in sight of the crate the little bugger stopped in his tracks and it was as if I could see the wheels spinning in his head; he didn't want to go in the crate. He made a beeline for the living room dog bed, running as fast as he could. He skidded into the bed and lay down really fast, as if he was now safe at home base. Spence, you little sucker. You may be a smart pup, but I am a little smarter. I body blocked him toward his crate and this time I was ready. When he got to the same spot he tried to do the same beeline back to the dog bed in the living room. Just as he started to run I poked him in the neck with my finger and blocked him. I pointed and told him to get in the crate. He lowered his head and walked into his crate. I passed the leadership test. I am sure there will be many more of these tests to come. He is just a little guy, 17 pounds and I could have easily just picked him up and put him in his crate. However it was important that I made HIM walk back to his crate on his own, otherwise it was not him giving it up. It will take some patients and, in the beginning, this will be dependent on treats, but the more you progress, voice commands and reassurance may be sufficient. Potty training can also be achieved and training for Separation Anxiety may also be accomplished. Pugs will love to sit and cuddle, and unless you get them excited may prefer to stay at home, lay on the couch and just breath. Getting around to get their attention, convey your will to them, make them do it and give them feedback is a cycle of actions we will need to learn and repeat. In this article we will cover the stages and the different approaches to get your Pug and yourself through training. One Pug is different than the other and they are both different from any other type or breed. Training a Pug is having a higher level of communication and understanding where long sentences and explanations are not nessesarry to convey intentions. The negative They are stubborn, and getting to the point where your Pug both understands your intention and responds to it positively may take time and persistence. The positive Pugs are people pleasers and your Pug will want to please you more than anybody. When you meet a Pug at a point where he seems to comply with your wish remember, even when a Pug is being stubborn, there is always room for negotiation. Motivation Just like us, a Pug can achieve a lot more than he though, if given the right motivation. The two main motivators for a Pug are food and your affection Methods There are different methods and approaches to dog training, they vary with different breeds and the purpose of the training. While this type of action may give the result you aimed for, in the short run, it may do the exact opposite in the long run. A dog will certainly stop whatever he is doing to avoid pain or verbal abuse, but at the same time may not understand the reason and build resentment or fear. Pugs in particular are very sensitive to the tone of your voice, tend to take scolding to heart and seam to genuinely get hurt. They will get very confused and frustrated and may not even associate the punishment with the same act you were punishing for. This will lead to even greater miscommunication and unwanted behavior. A desired action, followed by a reward is the key for most successful training. When your pug manages to create the direct link between her action and the reward, she will want to repeat it. Giving a treat and enforcing it with a good word and a friendly touch will send the message. As with negative reinforcement, the feedback should immediately follow the action for your pug to make the connection and avoid confusion. Unlike negative reactions on your part, treats and encouragement will always be met with happy tail wagging, but will miss the point if not done in direct proximity to what you are trying to teach. In fact, it may be received as random affection and disconnect your Pug from the training. In the beginning, use the treats for training only so not to confuse the dog. It will be easier to make the connection of command- action- feedback treat , if you maintain this type of consistency. This is especially effective if you are at distance and want to give the feedback immediately. Collar: Collars in general, are not a good accessory for Pugs. Being Brachiocephalic short nosed they already have a hard time breathing. Putting more pressure on their Trachea could make things even worse. The General consensus for Pugs of all ages are harnesses of different types. I prefer the softer, more hugging types. Training Harness: These are harnesses which have the clip on the chest instead of the back. If the dog pulls too hard, he will get swayed and may lose balance. It is very effective, even on large dogs as they will quickly learn the extent to which the can pull, and not choke in the process. E-collar: Another type of training gadget. It has very fine tuning levels and some trainers advise to try it and calibrate it on yourself, which makes sense to me. Potty Doorbells: Personally, our Lev just sits by the door and gives a single bark to indicate she wants out to potty. Since we have a yard, we just let her out, and she will come back when she is done and will signal with single barks that she wants back in. I think Potty Doorbells Can be a very elegant solution too. Attention Your Pug will not always be stubborn, but even when in a good playful mood which is most of their waking time it is hard to grab his or her attention for more than a few second. Being able to grab and keep you Pugs attention is going to be key to any type of training you plan on doing later. Start this at a quiet place, without too many distractions to begin with. If you want to incorporate a clicker in your training, this is a perfect place to start that too. Now you need to repeat it a few times a day while trying to prolong her attention each time. With time you will not need the treat or the finger and the mere command will draw her attention. After a while you can save the treat and only give every two or three times, but never give the treat without direct cause, it is essential to the training to only associate the treats with feedback. It will be convenient for grooming, nail cutting, cleaning etc. These actions may take time tobecome automatic and if you managed to do ir once at home, does not mean it will work tomorrow in the park, with other distraction. Patients and consistency will usually do the trick Sit The trick here is to get your Pug to sit without forcing it, and then rewarding him. Keep moving it until his bum is forced to the floor. When the bum touches the ground, praise him and give him the treat. Repeat Do this until the action becomes voluntary. Potty training Puppies have to go potty at relatively short intervals. So, whether you plan to potty train your pug indoors or outside, you are going to have start with fairly short intervals to avoid accidents. Outdoors Take your Pug out every few hours hopefully before an accident and wait until they do their business. It may take a while in the beginning. The Praising and the treat need to come right after they are done so they can make the connection. If you do catch him in the act and this is at all possible technically try and make him stop midway, grab him and let him finish outside. Then, give praise and treats. If this works out it will send a clear message of where it should be done. Use the same verbal que you used for the act itself in conjunction with the bell. Indoors If you live in an apartment it may not be practical for you to go downstairs every few hours and a litter box may be a convenient solution. Using disposable puppy pads will make cleanup easier. Most dogs would instinctively avoid potty in the same area as they sleep so putting the litterbox in the balcony or some back room would be a good option. The method is fairly similar to the outside and will require persistence and patients. Try and learn the intervals they need to go and beat them to it. Accidents will occur so be prepared for cleanups as well. Separation Anxiety will manifest in behavior that is not typical of your Pug and can include crying and howling for long periods, restlessness and even some destructive tendencies. If you come home to total chaos with damage to upholstery, plants etc. Do not punish or scorn her, it will do no good and may only frustrate her more. You may also notice restless behavior when you are making preparations to leave to work. Crate training is not a good solution in this case, as it may aggravate the stress and also keep her away from her litter box. There are some actions you can take to ease separation anxiety to your Pug: Try to give her some quality time before you leave. Preferably some outdoor activity and not in proximity to leaving. This way she will be fulfilled, tired and will not associate the departure with the activity. Create a safe designated area. This are should be large enough to not feel crowded but will be limited with gate or door. Make it a fun place with toys that are only there when you are away. Make sure to have the litter box and enough water, preferably in a none spilling bowl. Limit external stimulations, such as a view to the street. Leave the TV or radio on to simulate company and mask external noises. Conclusion Training your Pug may be challenging and require a lot of patients and consistency, but as a reward you will not just have a better-behaved dog, you will also have better communication and a better relationship with your Pug. And that is a reward by itself. Give yourself a treat. Additional Questions Do Pugs shed a lot? Hands down, the answer is Yes. For some odd genetic reason, maybe to keep them fluffy, Pugs have a double coat much like Huskies and Eskimo dogs who can live in the snow. Unfortunately this Pug does not live in the snow, but in your living room. The undercoat is very soft and fleecy and the outer coat gives the color and the protection. This is why the average Pug will shed year -round and will fill tour home with an amount of her that seems totally disproportional to their size. More on Pug Shedding and hoe to cope, here. Do Pugs bark a lot? Are they Noisy? Pugs are relatively quit dogs. They do not stand by the window or in the yard and bark at a cat that passed by twenty minutes ago, and they will usually just give a few gritting barks to strangers who come through the door. Generally, Pugs bark when they think it is necessary and only the amount needed. They will bark when they want food or water. If they want to go out or sometimes just for attention. More on the barking habits of Pugs and all the other noses they make here. Pug training is challenging, demanding, challenging, and sometimes painful! Pugs are easily distractible, can be stubborn, and get easily bored. Overall, Pugs are disinterested in Pug training. Once they get them to pee outside, which can take some time if, why bother? Pugs have a happy attitude and are excellent companion dogs. Pug dogs are not lb. Bernese Mountain Dog. You would not try to pick up a lb. Pugs have difficulty with limits and boundaries. Actually, they think we are the ones with the problem with too many limits. Anyhow, Pug parents spend a lot of time picking them up or moving them over. How about squishing yourself into the small spot their Pugs have left you on the sofa. Pug training is not as necessary as it is with larger dogs. If your Pug is barking and going crazy when someone knocks on the door, you pick them up when you open the door. If your Pug jumps on someone, the other person will usually bend down and pet them. They reward his jumping by giving him positive attention. One of the first things people with big dogs is to teach them not to jump. It seems most Pugs jump on people their entire lives. Everyone loves a Pug!? So Why Train your Pug? Do you want this angel stepping on your gut and other sensitive areas every time you sit down? Pugs love the attention you give them when training. Even though you and your Pug are already codependent, we can never get enough Pug time! And Pug training means more treats for your Pugs! Check your Own Behavior We know our Pugs can be quirky and kooky. It is difficult to request anything your Pug wants because of their sweet babyface. We do anything to keep our Pugs spoiled. At least my Pugs are comfortable! They love to be with you, cuddle and play with you. I usually drink my cup of coffee in the morning with a Pug pressed to each of my sides. All that is so great, but you want to be able to communicate some basic day-to-day behaviors at some point. These basics could be things like going outside when you open the door. Do you have a Pug that goes to the door, but the moment you open it, they just stand there and look out? Mimi often goes to the door and sits as if she wants out. Pugs know what they want and can be quite persistent. This is why Pug training is so necessary. They need to be taken outside during the middle of the night for many months. It takes more consistency and vigilance to get your Pug house trained. Set a Routine To potty train your Pug puppy, take her outside immediately after each meal and every two hours. Go outside with your Pug, and when she does her business, make a big deal out of it. Along with the praise, give her a small treat. Give the treat each time she does her business outside. It seems to take Pugs longer than other breeds to figure out that you want her to pee and pooh outside. When inside, have Your Pug in eyesight at all times. Pug training means not letting them sneak away to their favorite hiding spot to pee. Some people suggest putting the Pug puppy in a crate at all times you are not interacting with them. You may have to keep them in eyesight for their entire first year of life. Using baby gates are an excellent way to keep your Pug puppy with you in the family room. Close all bedroom doors. Take your Pug puppy in the kitchen with you while you are making dinner. Pugs learn that the kitchen is the place a tidbit may fall their way at a very young age. Funny how they can learn this quickly, but the Pug training we want often goes slowly! And even take your Pug puppy into the bathroom with you. This is all part of Pug training. Buy an exercise pen. She is less likely to pee or pooh in this area once she learns it is her area. Also, cleanup is easier if you know exactly where to look. Other than wasting all that time, you will end up with a have a half-housetrained Pug dog. Buy a big enough crate that your Pug puppy can stand, turn around, and lay down. Put a comfy blanket in for sleeping. Dogs, in general, will not pee in the area they sleep. If the crate is too big, she may pee in it and move to the other side to sleep. As your Pug grows, you will have to purchase a larger crate. You may. When my Pug got larger, I took the box out so she would have more room. Keep the crate in your bedroom, or close enough, you can hear her cry if she has to get up in the middle of the night. Mimi never needed to get up in the middle of the night. Lulu must have had a small bladder and would whimper halfway through the night. She would go every night, so I know she had to go. If your Pug puppy cries to get out of her crate when you first put her in, ignore her. It is difficult, but any feedback is a reinforcement for her to keep crying. Half the battle in Pug training is not giving in when they cry, whine or look at you with those big Pug eyes. Never take her out of the crate to comfort her. Be consistent. She will learn her crate is her new nighttime home at least until she stops peeing in the bed. She will stop whimpering. Pug training can be so hard for us Pug parents! Going to Work Be aware that your Pug puppy cannot hold her bladder all day when you go to work. Their bladders are very tiny when they are puppies. As part of your Pug training, teach your Pug puppy to use a litter box or puppy pad. When Lulu was a puppy, I left her in an exercise pen when I went to work with a puppy pee pad. I trained her to use the pee pad by placing her on it when I thought she needed to go. You may come home to a soiled, torn up puppy pee pad. Again, do not put the exercise pen on the carpet. I purchased a pee pad holder, and Lulu stopped tearing up the pee pads while I was gone. You can also train your Pug puppy to use a litter box with puppy litter. Litter can be a little messy. Sometimes it gets kicked out on the floor. Be sure your Pug puppy will not try to eat the litter. There are indoor dog potties with a grate and pad underneath. Some dog potties have artificial grass. If you want to go all out with Pug training, buy a potty with hydroponically grown grass. It needs to be changed every week or two and does not have an odor. Read the reviews. Some people rave about the product. Others gave one-star reviews. People said to go to Home Depot or Lowes and buy a patch of grass for a small fraction of the price. Hire a Dog Walker Hire a dog walker to take your puppy for a walk once a day while you are gone at work. This may be too expensive. If your Pug puppy is too little to walk on a leash, have them replace the soiled puppy pad and take her out in the yard once a day. Or just change careers and work from home! Even better! Your Pug will love you for it! Ask yourself these questions: Am I taking your Pug puppy outside after every meal? Am I taking your Pug puppy outside every two hours? Am I going outside with your puppy, lavishing him with praise and a few treats when he pees and poohs outside? Did I purchase an ex-pen in the home to put your Pug puppy if you need to leave the room for a minute? Do I have a nighttime crate that is not too large or too small? And do I use it? Do I ignore your Pug puppy when you put him in initially if he or she cries to get out? This was the toughest one of all when I was Pug training my Pugs. When he whimpers in the middle of the night to go out to pee, do I get up? Have I hired someone to take your Pug puppy out while I am are at work if financially feasible? Pug training your Pug to potty will go much faster once you can answer yes to all of these questions! Fix Your Mistakes Pug training is not easy. Fix your mistakes from the above questions. If, after a few months, your Pug puppy is still having many accidents, talk to your Vet. See if there is a medical reason for this. If you hire a dog trainer, they may or may not know more than you already know. Trainers may or may not have any formal training. Be certain to ask your Vet for a reputable trainer and get referrals. Once I hired a trainer, and he was totally against giving dogs treats. I decided not to continue with him. Pugs are food motivated. Why not take advantage of that with our Pug Training?! Sometimes puppyhood slips by quickly. After all, there is a reason you decided to train him now. You may have been rewarding him for years for things like scratching at the door. He scratches at the door, and you get up and let him out. You have already been doing Pug training, but not in a good way. Now you may want to train him to ring a bell on the door with his nose. This trick is more complicated because he must also learn to stop scratching on the door. If door scratching has worked for him for years, it may be difficult for him to give that up. Your Pug dog may walk on you all the time! After all, it is about their comfort. Getting them to respect your physical boundaries can be challenging. Let him adjust to his new surroundings. He could be nervous and needs to adjust. You can start Pug training after about a week in his home, but be sure to make it super positive. Maybe someone attempted to train him with aversive methods. And it could take up to a month for him to adjust to you and your family. Your adult Pug dog will probably have a harder time learning new tricks or changing old behavior. He or she can do it. Pugs want to please us. It takes more time and persistence. Your adult or adopted dog will appreciate the time you spend with him during Pug training. As always, watch for labored breathing as he is a brachycephalic breed and may be overweight. Some things your Pug dog may not be able to do if they require physical exertion. He may have breathing problems, obesity, have joint pain, arthritis, or heart problems. There are plenty of cool tricks your adult Pug dog can learn that are not physically stressful. Before Pug training, you may want to talk to your veterinarian. This is to rule out any health issues your adult Pug dog may have. A dog training class is a great place to take your Pug dog to socialize with other dogs and people. It allows you to see how he interacts with other dogs and strangers in a safe environment. Many dog obedience classes use the group to train dogs how to interact with each other. Conclusion Pugs are very unique dogs. They may be stubborn and endearing at the same time. When your Pug gets the zoomies with carrying your slipper, who wants to stop that? Yet, with consistency and patience, you will have a better-behaved Pug dog. Pug training dog tricks is fun for both you and your Pug. Pug puppies and adult Pug dogs bring with them their own set of challenges. A puppy may not have the focus of an adult, and an adult may have picked up some bad habits over the years. In any event, use the same Pug training methods for both. Reward your Pug dog when they get things correct. Never use aversive punishment or harm your Pug in any way. Pug training is about building confidence, strengthening your relationship, and having fun. Training your Pug may be challenging and need a lot of patience and consistency. But as a reward, you will have a well-behaved dog and a better relationship with your Pug. Your Pugs reward will be spending lots of positive, active time with you. And getting treats and lots of praise!

This is a super abbreviated version of a hefty subject. The research I mention above is not specific to Goldendoodles, but to all breeds of dogs. I include it here not to scare anyone, but to stress the importance of doing your due diligence in finding reputable breeders who care about the future of our beloved Goldendoodle dogs, and who will be responsible on behalf of our dear dogs who are counting on us to protect their futures. Every puppy has a unique and different look but in general, they have that round face, stocky body and beautiful stance with the tail set similar to that of an English Golden Retriever. They typically have a fluffy, to wavy coat that is low to non shedding. We have been breeding English Goldendoodles for many years now and we know the combinations of parents that work well to produce stunning puppies. Breeding is an art and creating that great look without compromising on temperament and health is key to bringing you a beautiful puppy with a great personality. Finding a breeder who produces the look you are wanting in your Doodle is critical. Sizes We breed a variety of different Doodle sizes. The estimated size of your Doodle is determined by the size of both parents. Standard Doodles pounds and inches tall - This is the result of breeding a full sized Standard Poodle with an English Golden Retriever or an English Goldendoodle. Medium Doodles pounds and inches tall - We have Moyen Medium Poodles here that we breed to full sized Doodles or Retrievers. This results in a nice medium sized companion. They come in either F1, F1b or Multigen generations. Mini Doodles pounds and inches tall - This is the result of any number of combinations depending on the size of the parents. It is not possible to have an F1 Tiny Doodle because breeding the smallest Poodle possible to a full sized Golden Retriever will still give no guarantees that the puppy will be in the pound range. Tiny Doodles only come in the F1b generation at Doodle Creek. These dogs typically have low to non shedding coats. Some will have the straighter coats with a loose wave to it. These coats will sometimes be low shedding. Others will have the fleecy coats and will shed very little to nothing at all. If you are wanting strong Retriever characteristics and you are okay with possibly some shedding, this would be a great option. If you have allergies, you may want to consider the F1b or Multigen breedings. These dogs will quite often look very similar to the F1 English Goldendoodles in that many still keep that nice, fleecy coat type. The litters normally have a few with the fleecy coat types and a few with the curly coat types. The fleecy coat typed F1b puppies are typically extremely low to non shedding. The F1b is an excellent choice for those who suffer from allergies. Multigen English Goldendoodles - Through our years of experience, we have now come to the point where we use our trusted genetics and we will breed two totally unrelated Goldendoodles together. We do all the proper DNA testing to ensure that we are getting the low to non shedding offspring from these matings. We have found that the Mulitgens are just as good as the F1b for those with allergies as they are also low to non shedding. The advantage of breeding Mulitgen English Goldendoodles here at Doodle Creek is that we are able to get more of the colours we are looking for in our puppies such as the tri colour, black and white, brown and white, or the merle. Coat types Our English Goldendoodles have several different coat types. Most are very low to non shedding. They turn into a loose curled coat as an adult and have a very soft feel. They are low to non shedding. The curly coat is similar to that of a poodle. They are typically non shedding and are wonderful for allergies. They get that beautiful, messy look to them and are very attractive looking as adults. They will often be low shedding but shed much less than a Golden Retriever. Big Red was our Irish Setter. We were devastated and felt like we had failed as breeders. However, we found that the puppies were extremely smart and farther advanced as they aged compared to our Pure Goldens as puppies. They were much calmer than most Irish Setters, and were more athletic than most Golden Retrievers. We knew these dogs would be a hit, and they have been. The first families to contact us were families specifically looking for the mix. They shared their stories of growing up with Golden Irish Mixes. Over and Over we heard how they were the best family dog they ever had. Why we Continue The Golden Irish was not merely something stumbled on by accident. The original accident was precipitated by a years long love of both the Golden Retriever and the Irish Setter. We are fortunate to live in an area of the country still rural enough to allow the Irish Setter to run. But even we have to find time and space to give our dogs this opportunity. After almost 20 years experience with both Goldens and Irishes I have concluded that the main character trait differentiating the Golden Retriever and Irish Setter is patience. The Golden Retriever was bred to patiently wait for the hunt. The Irish Setter was bred to go out and make the hunt happen. Both love to chase things. Both can have seemingly boundless energy. Both are loyal companions. The Golden Retriever will wait for the ball to be thrown and the Irish Setter will grab the ball and expect to be chased. The Irish Setter is proactively invoking the hunt, whereas the Golden Retriever is awaiting its arrival. We were no experts at first and have learned a lot in 20 years. It turns out the patience of the Golden Retriever tends to be inherited by the Hybrid making them more suitable for Urban environments.
